S
ince Haman met his fate on a tree in ancient Persia, Jews have celebrated Purim with an infectious enthusiasm. In different parts of the world, Jews historically have created their own customs to commemorate the deliverance of the Jewish people from their destruction. Throughout our history, many communities even celebrated their own “Purims” to commemorate salvations from evil decrees, or attempted persecutions or massacres. If you google “Purim Around the World,” you will find several websites (www.jafi.org and www.virtualjerusalem.com) that recount Purim traditions from communities where Jews have flourished in different time periods, Persia, Yemen, Egypt, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Italy, France, Salonika, Rhodes, Libya, Tunisia, Bukhara, Afghanistan, Germany and more. Many of these countries no longer have Jewish communities, but wherever Jewish communities do exist, you are assisting them through your contributions to the Jewish Federation Annual Community Campaign. A portion of your annual campaign dollars provide food, counseling, Jewish education programs and holiday celebrations, vocational services, senior programs and much more in Israel and in 60 countries around the world. Jewish Federations touch more Jews than any other organization in the world. Purim in Israel Purim is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Israel. Shlomit Jackson, Alpert JCC Jewish Educator, who is an Israeli-American shares these thoughts, “Purim in Israel is embraced by the whole country, from religious Jews in Jerusalem to secular Jews in Tel Aviv. It is a time of festivity and celebrated far beyond its original religious roots. Purim parties take place across Israel, with Purim street parties and carnival atmospheres taking place in almost every city, town and village in the country. Purim is also a holiday that emphasizes the community and gift giving, not only to your friends and family but to the needy as well. With so much going on, and so much color in the amazing costumes that can be seen, Purim in

Israel is a fascinating time to be in the country.” (Our community has a trip planned to Israel and Spain, that everyone is invited to join this fall. Please see the article on page 12.) Celebrating Purim in our Community As you can see by the sidebar on this page, there are an abundance of Purim activities hosted by various local synagogues and organizations for all to attend. The culmination of the festivities will be the Community Purim Carnival and Big Mitzvah Day on Sunday, March 8 from 11:30 am - 3 pm, where admission is free. This is Day 36 of our 100 Days of IMPACT! Kosher food will be available for purchase, amazing rides and games, mitzvah projects for both children and adults, a blood drive, vendors, information about ongoing volunteer opportunities in the community, synagogue and agency information tables, and much more. Volunteers are needed for both the Purim Carnival and Big Mitzvah Day projects; please contact Diane Johnson at djohnson@alpertjcc.org or 562-426-7601 x1013 to help out. So as we rejoice this Purim, let’s not forget our brothers and sisters around the world. If you would like to make your annual campaign contribution please go to www.jewishlongbeach.org or call Danny at 562-426-7601 x1007.

We are there to help a distressed family regain their footing. To rescue and rebuild after a catastrophe. We make sure a Holocaust survivor isn’t deserted, and that no one who is disabled is without assistance. Through the Alpert Jewish Community Center’s Early Childhood Education program, The Hebrew Academy Jewish Day School, Hillel on campus, local Synagogue education and Israel travel scholarships we’re seeking innovative approaches to supporting, nurturing students to discover or reconnect to their Jewish identity where ever there’s a longing.

The Fund for our Future
Fund for our Future at over 70% of Goal!
The Fund for our Future campaign is now at over 70% of the goal! The best part is we have an ever increasing scope of people supporting this effort. It is really quite simple to participate at any dollar amount, we love the small individual gifts just as much as the large family gifts. These gifts can be through cash, endowments or bequests. We can only reach our goal through widening the participation. A community effort to support the community’s future is necessary. Federation and Community Mourn the Loss of Eva Schlesinger Beth Shalom, The Hebrew
Deborah K. Academy, ADL, JNF, Israel Goldfarb Bonds, NCJW, Hadassah,
Chief Executive Officer, Jewish Federation Jewish Community Foundation
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our beloved community member Eva Schlesinger. Eva passed away on Wednesday, February 11. I can only begin to tell you how much our community will miss her. We all knew Eva as a loving, quiet woman who brought elegance to everything she touched. Rising from the tragedy of the Holocaust, she carried a fierce determination and indomitable spirit. She exhibited tremendous self-discipline, and was resolute about her Jewish faith. In Eugene, she found her equal and her soulmate, and she was so proud of all they accomplished together as major philanthropists in our community. While Eugene was often seen as the “spokesperson” of the family, make no mistake, Eva was an equal force behind their generosity and passion to repair the world. The first time I met her nearly ten years ago, she made it clear to me that the decision to support our community was truly shared between the two of them. The causes they supported were extensive: their dear congregation, Temple
the Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation and our partner agencies the Alpert Jewish Community Center (AJCC), Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS), Hillel, and the Hebrew Academy. They gave ongoing, huge support to all of these organizations, and Eva loved them all. When Eugene passed away, it left a huge hole in Eva’s life and in their shared philanthropy, but she was determined to carry on this legacy on her own. To her last moments she supported them proudly, and she even attended the community Legacy of Leadership Event in January. Understandably, the largest causes that the Schlesingers supported revolved around the perpetuation of Jewish life and education around the Holocaust and Israel.Eva was very proud of their connections to the US Holocaust Museum, The Chapman University Rogers Center for Holocaust Education, and the USC Shoah Foundation Institute. Locally, Eva and Eugene established memorials to the Holocaust at the Hebrew Academy and the AJCC in remembrance of their many family members who perished. Eva was most proud

of her work with Eugene on the establishment of an endowment at California State University, Long Beach to support the Holocaust Teachers Training Program which was started by Gerda Seifer. This intensive program is designed to give public school teachers the appropriate tools to teach tolerance. Eva and Eugene’s names will live on in perpetuity as benefactors of this program which was so important to Eva. I believe that Eva accomplished in her life what she had set out tenaciously to do - to make meaning out of the tragedy of the Shoah, to believe that the horror she and Eugene lived through had a purpose, that they were spared to bring hope to future generations. And, she did. She was an inspiration to all of the staff at the Federation, AJCC, and JFCS, through her participation in
senior programs, especially after Eugene’s passing. She was determined to carry on, to exercise, to keep herself strong. We loved seeing her come in with her warm smile and cheerful greetings. But the largest legacy Eva left was her grandchildren. She was so proud of each of them. The highlight of each of my visits to Eugene and Eva’s home was seeing all of the grandchildren’s latest pictures, and hearing her proud updates on each of them. She always glowed! Eva accomplished through her family and her community what was most important to her - the continuation of Jewish life and culture. We will miss her, but the community will always remember her. Eva is survived by her daughters, Veronica Schweitzer and Judy Raykoff, and their families.
Small Actions Make A Big Difference

believe that in life, whether it’s a financial gift or a small donation of time, food or donated goods, there is a huge difference between something and nothing. It’s the difference between night and day.”
Alan Sherry & Linda Frankel on a Federation’s community mission to Israel in 2011
Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf’s edge and the beach. Back and forth this person went. As the man approached, he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide. The man was struck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish, many of them were sure to perish. As he approached, the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf. As he came up to the person he said, “You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can’t possibly make a difference.” The person looked at the man. He then stooped down and picked up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean. He turned back to the man and said, “It sure made a difference to that one!”
Linda & Alan’s Philosophy on Philanthropy For Linda Frankel and Alan Sherry, the starfish story sums up their philosophy about the commitment they‘ve made to do what they can to take care of others. They both feel strongly that they have an ethical and moral obligation to help those less fortunate. This belief led them to the Jewish Community Foundation and the process of determining what their legacy would be. Linda and Alan have chosen to leave a bequest through the Jewish Community Foundation to both Jewish and non-Jewish causes. For years, they were hesitant because they didn’t think they were ‘in the same league’ with people who had more resources; they feared they couldn’t give enough to make a worthwhile difference. But after a while that felt like an excuse. Linda explains “because all together, the collective, communal efforts are significant. Our gifts, combined, affect individuals who wouldn’t get access to life changing programs, assistance and opportunities. We
Their Jewish Journey Linda and Alan met in the early 90’s (before J-date), when answering an ad in the Jewish Journal meant leaving a voice mail. Judaism was equally important in both of their lives. Alan was raised in a conservative synagogue on the East Coast and Linda grew up in the reform Wilshire Boulevard Temple right here in Los Angeles. Her grandparents were philanthropic and she witnessed from an early age that tzedakah was a priority in her family. Her dad, who worked in the toy industry, was always donating toys, and was active in the Los Angeles Federation. Linda’s mom’s family, originally from Lithuania and Vienna, fled the Holocaust and went to live with relatives in Selma, Alabama before moving to Los Angeles. Linda grew up at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps and was inspired by Rabbi Wolf, who founded them. Both she and Alan believe in the power of Jewish camping to instill values and a love for access to a Jewish social life. It made a powerful impact and it is one of the causes they plan to include in their legacy. Alan was influenced by Linda’s family’s commitment to tzedakah, but he also has been inspired by the pri-
or generation of community leaders both locally in Long Beach, and nationally. He feels they have a blueprint of priorities and action we can all emulate, to some degree, regardless of how modest or great our financial wealth. Alan started his small business after a job transfer led him to the west coast. After 24 years of hard work, he has been blessed with success and wants to share that good fortune with others. Alan states, “I look forward to retiring and working with charities where I can make a difference. I want to be a philanthropist and give funds away the best I can, while I am alive and after I am gone.” Alan and Linda are also involved with Operation Jumpstart (OJS), which helps disadvantaged youth. In addition to a financial commitment to OJS, they have both mentored students there, facilitating the pursuit of education and meaningful careers. A passionate musician, Alan is excited to be involved with the Jazz Angels as well.
worked on a kibbutz, while Alan’s first time was with our Federation’s community mission in 2011. Linda remarks, “Travelling to Israel with the Federation allowed us to see the depth and breadth of the services provided to those in need. It brought it to life. I learned that through our Federation system, we support Birthright Israel and many social and educational programs for immigrants.” “Going on the Israel trip made me more committed to Israel’s continuity and to helping youth visit there,” Alan adds. “While we cannot give a large amount away each year, we can leave a portion of our estate to charity through the Jewish Community Foundation. The number is not important. What is important to us, is that we do our part. After making sure that your family is taken care of, I want to encourage everyone in our community to think about leaving something to the causes they care deeply about.” For more information on bequests and leaving your Commitment to Israel own personal Jewish lega Their commitment to the cy, please contact Sharon Jewish community also ex- Kenigsberg at 562-426-7601 tends to Israel. Purim: The Joy of Finding One’s Place in the World By Rabbi Steven A. Moskowitz
“When everyone finds his or her place in the world, there will be great singing and rejoicing.” (Rabbi Nachman of Breslov) Purim is a holiday which answers the very first question God asks humanity in the Bible. After having eaten from the tree of knowledge, Adam and Eve hide in the bushes from God. God calls out to them, “Where are you?” Jewish tradition teaches that God’s question was not about Adam and Eve’s physical location; God was asking them if they understood their moral and spiritual purpose in the world. Their respective answers, demonstrating a total avoidance of responsibility for their conduct, disclosed how ill-prepared, how naked they were, for the roles they had been assigned: of being God’s co-creators and stewards of the world. Their lack of understanding set them on a journey, one which each
one of us replicates in our own lives. In the cycle of the Jewish calendar year, Purim is the concluding holiday. Over the course of a year, we have read the Torah in its entirety, observed moments of loss and mourning, celebrated new beginnings, and roused ourselves to embark on three pilgrimage festivals. We arrive at the final calendrical stop, Purim, before crossing over into the dimension of a new cycle. Our year’s banquet of wisdom has prepared us to be able to answer responsibly God’s primary question: “Where are you?” Curiously, the geographical setting for the story of Purim is exile. Esther and Mordecai and their fellow Jews are living not in the promised land of Israel, but in the Persian capital Shushan, located in what is now Iran. Yet, this setting only
highlights the true nature of God’s question to us. It is not “where are you living?” but “how are you living?” When Mordecai presents Esther with information about Haman’s plans and urges her to intercede with the king, Esther’s initial response is to draw back in fear. Mordecai advises her: If you keep silent, even if someone else prevents the slaughter Haman has planned, you and your entire lineage will perish. Mordecai then challenges Esther: “And who knows, perhaps you have reached this position of sovereignty for just such a crisis.” At that, Esther publicly proclaims her true identity and averts a catastrophe for her community. Today’s world is not in short order of impending disasters, both for Jews in particular and for humanity in general. Sometimes it seems like the world is upside down;
the unethical get rewarded, yet those who are eager to Rabbi Steven live with every- A. Moskowitz one in peace are instead shunned by their neighbors. Purim is a reminder of our capacity to overturn the world, to set things morally right side up. Awakening to and embracing our responsibilities for all creation, for all who live on this planet, is a profound answer to God’s question to each and every one of us. When we answer “Hineni! Here I am!” we find our sacred place in the world. And when we do so, there is “great singing and rejoicing” throughout creation. Rabbi Steven Moskowitz is Rabbi at Temple Israel in Long Beach

MARCH 2015

Letter from the Executive Director Spring is once again upon us (we who are fortunate to live in Southern California), and we are coming into another exciting time in the Jewish year! At sundown on the evening of March 4, we celebrate Purim, and on the evening of April 3, Pesach begins! Here at the Alpert JCC, we have many opportunities to participate in this revitalizing time of year. In the Book of Esther, we read that Purim is a time for “feasting and merrymaking,” as well as for “sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor” (Esther 9:22). On March 4, Chabad of Los Alamitos and the Alpert JCC are bringing the Jewish Rock Band 8th day to perform at the J. This festive “adult” event will take place at 7pm and will include 8th Day’s own special version of the Megillah reading, Hamantaschen, and a kids’ craft room. Tickets are available through 8th Day’s or GesherCity’s Facebook page. On March 8 from 11:30-3, the AJCC will again be hosting the ever-popular, endlessly fun for kids of all ages, Community Purim Carnival and Big Mitzvah Day! As part of the carnival-like atmosphere of Purim, I encourage you all to dress up and participate in our costume contest! This tradition of wearing costumes is said to come from when Esther “masked” her Jewish identity. There will be carnival rides and games, a Ferris wheel, racers, pony rides (with real ponies!), a petting zoo, mitzvah projects, and Kosher food and Hamantaschen for sale. As I also mentioned last month, on March 21 from 7-11pm, our Casino Royale is sure to be a fantastic night of dancing, blackjack, raffles, and roulette. This fabulous evening is a great opportunity to pull out the cocktail attire and spend a night “on the town,” all while supporting our Early Childhood Education and Youth Department. And it’s going to be a blast! Tickets are available for purchase on our website. In anticipation of Passover, on March 30 at 6:00pm, we will again have our beautiful Women’s Seder, led by Ellen Goldsmith and Amy Lipeles. The Community Passover Seder will be on April 4. More details for both those events are available on the website. May your Purim be full of fun, frolic, gift-giving and Hamantaschen. I look forward to seeing all of you at all the exciting upcoming events taking place at the AJCC, Your Center For Life!

Hillel Brings Purim to the Campus! Beach Hillel loves celebrating Purim with students! It is the holiday that enriches the lives of Jewish students through thorough explanation of how it is that Jewish people are unique and a cooperative community for one another, and also through allowing students to let loose and enjoy themselves! In years past, Beach Hillel has hosted hamantashen baking programs, which helps to build Jewish futures, alongside learning sessions with Rabbi Drew through Torah on Tap with topics pertaining to the Megillah of Esther and learning the story of Purim in depth.
As Beach Hillel expands its student engagement and reach on campus, it is important to continually create dynamic programs that attract students and provide them with a sense of Jewish fulfillment and belonging to a Jewish community. Beach Hillel will be launching its first ever Purim Party to bring stu-
dents together to celebrate the survival of the Jewish people. Included will be a Mishloach Manot exchange for students to feel the spirit of the holiday and partake in this meaningful tradition. Beach Hillel seeks to maintain its community partnership and is excited to announce that it will again
Making Mensches at Beach Hillel
Building Jewish students as leaders of the community is no easy task. However, the amazing “Make a Mensch” grant provided by the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County greatly supports Beach Hillel in making Jewish student leaders on campus. With this grant, Beach Hillel was able to expand its internship opportunities. These opportunities
provide real professional experience for students to work with a highly respected organization, and allow them to access key professional development opportunities that build them as independent campus leaders. The professional development opportunities that Beach Hillel interns have taken advantage of include a retreat to Belmont shore in Long Beach and a retreat to the Santa Monica Pier. There, students learned the importance of qualitative Jewish programming, meaningful and authentic engagement, and created strategic plans
of how to move forward with Beach Hillel’s initiatives to reach our mission and overall campus vision. Our amazing student leader engagement team has taken the knowledge they gained at these retreats and implemented them in various ways on campus. Three new program series have been inserted into Beach Hillel’s regular programs including Jewish Movie Nights, a Jewish Women’s group, and an Explore Southern California Hikes series. All of these programs were created based on the needs of Jewish students on campus

Rabbi Lau Visits Our School
We, at the Hebrew Academy, were thrilled when we found out that the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi David Lau, would be visiting our school on January 13th! Of all the many wonderful Jewish organizations in Orange County, we were honored that he chose to visit our school during his brief visit to the United States.
It was such an inspiration for our students and staff to hear from such a prominent figure. He spoke to our students in English and Hebrew which made them feel so proud of their education! Each elementary grade student carefully prepared one question for Rabbi Lau, who took the time to give them all thorough and thoughtful responses. Our third grade choir performed songs for him before he was off to New York and he was touched with this honor.

Information Meeting about Spain/Israel Trip Set For March 24
Join with other community members for trip of a lifetime. The Alpert JCC, the Jewish Federation and Temple Beth Ohr, are partnering with the Jewish Community Centers Association (JCCA) Israel Office to offer a unique trip to Spain and Israel from Oct. 21-Nov. 4, 2015. With our professional tour educator, Julian Resnick, we will explore the rich Jewish life in Spain before the inquisition, alongside the marvels of modern-day Spain. We will meet with members of the Jewish community living in Madrid today, and explore other highlights of Spain which include the rich histories of the cities
of Toledo, Cordoba, Seville and Granada. Continuing on to Israel, we will learn about the strong emphasis of Sephardi Jewry on the State as well as visit sites of both ancient and modern Israel. We will experience the beauty of Shabbat in Jerusalem and explore the many layers of this amazing city. The itinerary will be designed to accommodate both first-time and seasoned travelers to Israel. The Golan Heights, Tzfat, Dead Sea, Hula Nature Reserve, Masada, and Tel Aviv and its environs are a sampling of the places that will be part of our journey. Many of our former community trip participants enjoyed their experience so much that they cannot wait to go with us again. Linda Temkin Waltzman and Ettie Councilman who went to Poland & Israel in 2013 have this to say, “What made our trip unique was the outstand-
ing quality of our tour educator/guide. I also appreciated the flexibility of scheduling that allowed for personal interests and the wonderful camaraderie that developed among us and our fellow travelers. I am ready to pack my bags again,” says Linda. Ettie adds, “I felt that the trip was well organized, the guide was incredibly knowledgeable, the hotels were top rate and the food was great. I am looking forward to the next trip.” The trip is open to everyone and there are options to go to Spain only or Israel only and to extend your trip in either country. To learn more, please attend the information meeting on Tuesday, March 24 at 7 pm at the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, 3801 East Willow Street. Please RSVP to Susan Paletz at spaletz@alpertjcc.org, or Sharon Kenigsberg at sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org or call (562) 426-7601.

Dr. Glenn Dynner
The CSULB Jewish Studies Program is pleased to welcome Dr. Glenn Dynner to southern California. He will speak on Tuesday, March 24 at 7:30 pm at the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, 3801 E. Willow Street. A professor of religion at Sarah Lawrence College, Dr. Dynner has focused his re-
search on eastern European Jewish history, particularly looking at the social history of Hasidism and the Jewish Enlightenment. His first book, Men of Silk: The Hasidic Conquest of Polish Jewish Society won the Koret Publication Award and was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. His talk will be based on his most recent book, Yankel’s Tavern: Liquor and the Life in the Kingdom of Poland. In his talk, Dr. Dynner will explore how Jews and nonJews in Poland, particularly the Polish nobility, worked together and lived side by side. The taverns created and run by Jews were much
COMMUNNITY
Jews & Booze: Jewish Tavern Keepers in Eastern Europe more than taverns. “They served as hotels and restaurants and stores and banks; in the countryside they were the center of the village or the small town. This placed the Jew, an outsider, in a very powerful, influential position.” Even as Russian rules restricted Jews in the nineteenth century, local Polish nobility protected many of them. Like all Jewish Studies talks, it is free and open to the public; there is no need to reserve a space. For more information on this talk or spring semester events, please contact Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger at Jeffrey.Blutinger@csulb.edu.
Celebrated Persian Jewish Musician to Give Free Concert at CSULB
Galeet Dardashti
Noted Persian Jewish musician, Galeet Dardashti, will give a free concert in the Gerald R. Daniel Recital Hall at CSULB on Monday,
March 16 at 8:00 pm. She will be accompanied by the all-female Mizrahi band Divahn and by video artist Dmitry Kmelnitsky.
As the granddaughter of Yona Dardashti, the most renowned singer of Persian classical music in Iran, and the daughter of the highly esteemed cantor Farid Dardashti, Galeet is the first woman in her family to continue their tradition of distinguished Persian and Jewish musicianship. Her performance in Long Beach is called Monajat, and is inspired by the poetic prayers of Selihot, recited during the month preceding the Jewish New Year. It is a time-specific concert and program that takes place during
a period of deep reflection and spiritual preparation. In the project, she re-imagines the Selihot ritual in collaboration with an acclaimed ensemble of musicians, an electronic soundscape, and dynamic live video art. Monajat is a Persian homage to her grandfather, during which she will perform some of the Persian piyutim traditionally changed as part of the Selihot service, as well as other liturgical and non-liturgical Hebrew and Persian poetry set to new music. Through electronics, she defies time and performs with

The program is open to anyone 17 to 80+ years old, provided that you can pass a physical exam from your doctor. If you are interested in the program, please contact Denny, who is an area VFI Ambassador, at dendett@ yahoo.com.
