Opening Night for Annual Campaign and Long Beach Jewish Film Festival By Danny Levy, Jewish Federation & Community Foundation Director of Development

S

imchahs, weddings, b’nai mitvahs oh my! Celebrations of love, family and friends…sound like Hava Nagila! And look like Hava Nagila, the movie. Join with community friends, old and new, in celebrating Opening Night on Thursday, October 10, 2013. This is the Opening Night for both the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival and the Jewish Federation’s 2014 Annual Community Campaign. The Jewish Federation is hosting the reception before the screening as well as welcoming the director and producer of the film for questions and answers after the screening. The Long Beach Jewish Film Festival is co-sponsored by The Alpert Jewish Community Center, The Jewish Federation, The Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Long Beach Hillel and CSULB Jewish Studies Program. Celebrations are an integral part of our Jewish community here in Greater Long Beach and across the globe. The money raised from the 2014 Annual Community Campaign helps some of these celebrations come to fruition: the college student who has made a life-long connection to Israel through a Birthright trip; the teen who gets a scholarship to Summer Stock; the b’nai mitzvah student who can continue his/her studies with tuition assistance; the senior who can join with peers to enjoy a weekly luncheon and presentation.

Hava nagila, hava nagila, Let us rejoice, let us rejoice Hava nagila ve-nismeha, Let us rejoice and be glad Hava neranena, hava neranena, Let us sing, let us sing Hava neranena ve-nismeha, Let us sing and be glad Uru, uru ahim, Awake, awake, brothers Uru ahim be-lev sameah! Awake, brothers, with a joyful heart!

Such wonderful lyrics, although I would update it and add an “Awake, sisters”. Simple words that remind us to rejoice, be glad and be happy. A message the movie resonates as well: Hava Nagila is to music what the bagel is to food – a Jewish staple that has transcended its origins and become a worldwide hit. Bob Dylan sang it. Elvis, too. Yet, that’s only the beginning when it comes to Hava Nagila. Follow the infectious party song on its fascinating journey from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the cul-de-sacs of America in this hilarious and surprisingly deep film. The film features interviews with Harry Belafonte, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Leonard Nimoy, Regina Spektor and more. It takes viewers from Ukraine and Israel to the Catskills, Greenwich Village, Hollywood – and even Bollywood – using the song as a spring-

Long Beach Jewish Film Festival Continue the celebration and rejoicing as the 2013 Long Beach Jewish Film offers five unique experiences of prominent Jewish-themed films over three days. Here is the incredible line up for the other four films of the festival:

board to explore Jewish history and identity and to spotlight the cross-cultural connections that can only be achieved through music.

Hava Nagila Director/Producer Roberta Grossman As if this great uplifting movie was not enough, we bring you the director and producer Roberta Grossman to visit with us after the screening. “It has been a fascinating journey from Ukraine to YouTube with Hava Nagila,” says director Grossman. “I believe we managed to thread the needle Director/Producer Roberta Grossman between heart and humor, emotion and entertainment, resulting in an unexpectedly deep and compelling meditation on the tragedies, triumphs and joys in the modern Jewish journey.” Roberta Grossman is an award-winning filmmaker with a passion for history and social justice. She has written and produced more than forty hours of documentary film and television. Grossman’s last film, Blessed Is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh, was shortlisted for an Academy Award, won the audience award at 13 film festivals, was broadcast on PBS and nominated for a Primetime Emmy. Grossman was the series producer and co-writer of 500 Nations, the eight-hour CBS mini-series on Native Americans hosted by Kevin Costner. Her feature documentary, Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action, premiered in February 2005, and screened and won awards at festivals worldwide. Opening Night specifics (Thursday, October 10): Reception with light appetizers and wine in the Lentzner Family Promenade and the Leon & Barbara Shoag Rotunda at 6:30 pm, following with the Hava Nagila screening in the Amy & Richard Lipeles Family Auditorium at 7:30 pm. Tickets for Opening Night are free with a gift to the 2013 or 2014 Annual Community Campaign. You must RSVP to receive your free ticket to attend the Opening Night screening. The Flat, Sat, October 12, 7:30pm An Israeli documentary filmmaker brings his cameraman along to clean out the flat where his grandparents lived. What they find there uncovers a bizarre and shocking story that began with a Nazi journalist’s report from pre-war Mandate Palestine. God’s Fiddler, Sun, October 13, 10:30am Itzhak Perlman said, “When I spoke with him, I thought, I can’t believe I’m talking to God.” Jascha Heifetz was worshipped by the world’s greatest violinists who knew they could never approach his mastery. This film takes a look at the idiosyncratic virtuoso, both acclaimed by the world and criticized for being too perfect. Süskind, Sun, October 13, 2:00pm Walter Süskind fled from Germany to the Netherlands in 1938, and when that country was occupied, he was made the Jewish liaison to the Nazis. This Dutch film dramatizes the real story of a man hated for being among those who decided who shall live and who shall die while secretly running an operation that saved thousands of children. Putzel, Sun, October 13, 7:00pm Walter is a young man with problems, starting with his insulting nickname. His obsession is to take over his uncle’s Manhattan deli, but there are problems – funny problems – and this comedy of love, lust and lox serves up a full buffet of laughs cooked up by a cast of kooky New York characters. Long Beach Jewish Film Festival individual tickets or the Film Festival Pass will be available at the P.E. desk at the AJCC and at Opening Night. Visit www.alpertjcc.org/filmfest for more information. To become a Film Festival Patron, please contact Susan Paletz 562-426-7601 x1012 or spaletz@ alpertjcc.org.

INSIDE THE CHRONICLE

The Jewish Community

Celebrate the Power of Community One of our strengths as a community is providing the situations, the locations, the opportunities and the education to allow our young and old a way to celebrate Jewish life here in Greater Long Beach and West Orange County. How do we do this you may ask? Well quite easily – WITH YOUR HELP – through the Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign and the Fund for our Future Campaign, we raise the dollars needed for the Jewish Community Partnership agencies to run their programs that then provide the catalyst. Examples of the Impact of Funding From the Two Vital and Critical Campaigns The Annual Community Campaign funding provided to the Alpert Jewish Community Center contributes to the $225,000 they are able to provide in scholarships and financial assistance. The

scholarships and financial assistance in the Early Childhood Education preschool allow, for many, the beginning of Jewish learning. The assistance to attend camp or Summer Stock continues that education. Funding towards the senior programming provides weekly gatherings and/or celebrations with luncheons and presentations. The Fund for our Future Campaign provides for the opportunity to support a current or future program such as the Teen Macabbi Games and Arts Festival, Family Camp Program, and Teen and Senior Engagement Initiatives. Likewise, Jewish Family and Children’s Service uses funding from the Annual Community Campaign to help families deal with the stress of life – such as the stress surrounding celebrations. They do this through counseling in building healthy relationships, giving children a voice, caring for older adults and pro-

Beginning Jewish learning

viding emergency assistance. Through the Fund for our Future Campaign you can help support these programs into the future, along with others such as the Interfaith Families-Building Jewish Identity Program, Adult Clinical Services and Friendly Visitor Program. Furthermore, Long Beach Hillel is able to send young adults to Israel through TaglitBirthright, celebrate Shabbat meals and coordinate student athletics with help from the Annual Community Campaign. By giving to the Fund for our Future Campaign, you are able to support future activities such as the College

4 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE | tishri-heshvan | 5774

Campus Activity Fund, Program Director and College Campus Student Engagement Intern Program. The Annual Community Campaign also supports The Hebrew Academy as it builds Jewish identity throughout students’ lives. The Hebrew Academy provides scholarships for those unable to afford tuition. Important programs such as the Program Endowment Fund, Afterschool Program, Special Holiday Events and Art/Music/Technology Fund can be supported for life through the Fund for our Future Campaign. Even our local synagogues benefit from the Annual Community Campaign. This year, the Annual Community Campaign was able to make grants for Hebrew school education to allow scholarships and assistance for students to prepare for their b’nai mitzvah and confirmation and to help solidify their Jewish identity. Even the

Fund for our Future Campaign can be of support to our local synagogues, as anyone can leave a bequest to a synagogue for any purpose through the Jewish Community Foundation or help support the Jewish Scholarship Initiative. This just shows a small sampling of what we accomplish together. Why we need you. Why you should give to both the Annual Community Campaign and the Fund for our Future Campaign. What type of impact we make because we work together as a community. The strength of a people. The power of a community. If you would like to make a gift to the Annual Community Campaign or explore options to create an endowment, set up a special project or give a Campus gift through the Fund for our Future Campaign, please contact, Danny Levy, 562-426-7601, dlevy@ jewishlongbeach.org.

Outliving Your Retirement Savings A Major Concern of Baby Boomers as They Approach Retirement Am I saving enough for retirement? How much money will I need? How can I maximize my Social Security? These are among the questions that concern many of us as we approach retirement. The Jewish Community Foundation is hosting a free workshop that will explore these questions and more on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus/ Alpert JCC. Financial Consultants, Stuart J. Friedman and Nate J. Carlon from the Burnham/ Gibson Financial Group will be our guest presenters. Their interactive presentation will outline some strategies to plan for medical costs and long-term care expenses, allocation of resources, in-

formation about maximizing tax advantages and more. It is not too early or too late to learn more about these topics- all are welcome. Stuart Friedman, ChFC, CLU has more than 35 years of experience as a financial services professional providing his clients with the guidance they need to reach their risk management, investment and financial planning goals. In addition to being a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant, Stuart’s continuing education includes a certificate in Retirement Planning from the Wharton School of Business. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Boston University. Nate Carlon has nearly

a decade of experience in the financial services industry. He believes in providing clearly defined retirement planning and wealth-building strategies that emphasize risk management and proper asset allocation. His specialty in fixed income and portfolio

construction is a plus for today’s retiring baby boomers who want to manage their portfolios and generate reliable sources of income. Nate earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arizona. The workshop is being

planned by the Jewish Community Foundation Legacy Committee, which is dedicated to providing educational opportunities on topics of interest to the community. The Legacy Committee is chaired by Rick Freeman and cochaired by Cheryl Avirom. Members include Laurie Raykoff, Sherri Selmanson, Jan Stein, Rita Zamost, Judi Lentzner and Edie Brodsky. To make your reservation, contact Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments and Community Development, at sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org or 562-426-7601 x1008. The workshop is free of charge but please RSVP so that we have enough materials available. There will be no solicitations.

Let Your Yetzer Tov Be Your Guide By Rabbi David Cantor

And Isaac went out to stroll in the field toward evening, and he raised his eyes and saw and, look, camels were coming. And Rebekah raised her eyes and saw Isaac, and she alighted from the camel. And she said to the servant, “Who is that man walking through the field toward us?” And the servant said, “He is my master,” and she took her veil and covered her face. And the servant recounted to Isaac all the things he had done. And Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah as wife. And he loved her, and Isaac was consoled after his mother’s death. (Genesis 24:63) Given a classroom of teenagers, a whiteboard, and some time to kill, there’s a favorite lesson I like to teach. I ask the students if any of them are dating, contemplating it, or could possibly imagine themselves dating, and then invite them to supply words describing their “ideal” boy- or girlfriend, which I then write down on one side

of the board. Then I draw a line down the center, and ask them to imagine – sometimes hard to do – that it is fifty or so years from now, and they are sitting down to breakfast in their home, coffee steaming, radio softly playing, newspaper neatly folded to an article of particular interest. I ask them to describe the person sitting opposite, their life-partner of many years with whom they are about to share that tidbit of particular interest, which I write down on the other side of the line. The second set of adjectives tends to be radically different from the first. Imagining a theoretical girl- or boyfriend, the students tend to focus on appearances and superficial attributes: nice eyes, figure, somatotype, complexion, hair color, and size and shape of selected body parts. In describing what the person is like, terms tend towards romantic, funny, smart, fun. But when contemplating the person with whom they would have spent the majori-

ty of their days and nights, the physical tends to drop away in favor of something deeper: friend, partner, or companion. When challenged, they tend to agree that – with regard to their ideal husband, wife, spouse, partner – physical appearances are less important, or not important at all. Then I throw down the challenge: If you’re shopping for this (indicating the descriptors of the life-partner), is your shopping list (indicating the descriptors of boyfriends/ girlfriends) going to get you what you want? Usually there is a moment of silent contemplation, followed by a shift in perspective that may – perhaps – have some effect. We are hardwired by our physical natures to value appearances, to chase after beauty, in oder to ensure the survival of the human species. But the chemical systems driving our desires are less interested in our long-term happiness than our short-term probability of procreation. Our tradition teaches

that our yetzer harah (our id, or “evil” incli- Rabbi David nation) can Cantor be harnessed to perform a higher purpose by our yetzer tov (our ego, or “good” inclination). I accept that nothing I say or do will change society’s fascination and fixation with fashion. People will continue to purchase gossip magazines and try to keep up with the Kardashians, William and Kate, Miley Cyrus, and Madonna in much the same way as we used to concern ourselves with Burt Reynolds, Dolly Parton, and Princess Diana. What I hope is that we can take to heart the lesson learned by my teenagers: window shopping is ordinary and acceptable. But when it comes down to making that final purchase, make sure it’s something you will come to cherish and love for ever and ever, ‘til death do you part. Rabbi David Cantor is Rabbi at Temple Beth Shalom, Long Beach.

How To Be Successful In Basketball In order for basketball players to be successful on the court they must develop good habits. At the same time, they should avoid or eliminate bad habits. Bad habits are developed the same way good habits are - through repetition. The key then, for coaches and players, is to practice good habits. The Alpert JCC offers a year-round youth basketball league where boys and girls ages 5 through 13 years old can practice good habits. This popular league is led by former Michigan State and NBA star, Pete Davis and his team of coaches. Beyond counting wins and losses, the league emphasizes sound fundamentals, skill development, sportsmanship, and partnership with families. The AJCC/Pete Davis Youth Basketball League kicks off its Fall Season Sunday, October 13, with a player evaluation & placement day which is a requirement for all new and returning league players. All games are played on Sunday afternoons between 12pm and 7pm at the best indoor basketball facility in Long Beach, the Alpert JCC gym! In addition, one weekly practice is held on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm.

Each year, more than one-third of adults 65 and older in the United States experience a fall. Of those falls, more than 20 percent result in moderate to severe injuries such as joint problems, bone fractures and brain trauma. The good news is, in a one-hour workshop presented by SilverSneakers, you can learn about causes of falls, how to reduce your risk of falling, what to do if you should fall, and how better balance is within reach. You’ll also learn how to live safer and stronger by participating in our SilverSneakers Classic class. This class can help you: • Increase muscle and bone strength • Improve joint range of movement • Have better balance • Stand up straighter FREE and follows the Senior Lunch. Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and JFCS invites you to raise awareness about this important issue. By raising awareness, we reduce the stigma and shame that often accompanies this type of abuse and we equip people to offer help and support to victims of domestic violence. Although awareness is growing, domestic violence still remains a largely hidden problem. Domestic violence does not discriminate against any racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic status and it happens in both heterosexual and homosexuals relationships. Although women appear to be more susceptible to partner abuse by their male partners, men are also victims of abuse by their female or male partners. According to the Nation-

al Coalition against Domestic Violence, in the Unites States, 1.3 million women and 830,000 men are assaulted each year by people they believe love them. Despite considerable progress in reducing domestic violence, an average of three women lose their lives every day as a result of these unconscionable acts. Tragically, without intervention, children exposed to such violence can suffer serious long-term consequences including difficulty in school, post-traumatic disorders, alcohol and drug abuse and criminal behavior. Domestic abuse occurs in teen, as well as, adult relationships. One study found that 1 in 5 high school girls reported being physically or sexually abused by a dating partner. Another study of teen dating behavior found that 3

out of 5 teens have had a boyfriend or girlfriend who made them feel bad or embarrassed about themselves. Victims often don’t complain or seek help because they are too afraid to say anything. Often times, victims of abuse are used to the manipulation and violence from their abuser and simply don’t recognize they are victims. The buildup of psychological and verbal abuse can be subtle and gradual. Over time, the person they love undermines their self-esteem and makes them feel more and more dependent. The victim may not see it coming. Without intervention, the pattern of abuse is passed on from generation to generation. Part of JFCS’s mission is to strengthen our community so that all children, women

and men are safe. At JFCS, we understand that it is important to help families break the cycle of violence. For this reason, counseling is vital for all family members impacted by domestic violence. As an active advocate against domestic violence, JFCS has developed a partnership

with the Women’s Shelter of Long Beach to provide crisis intervention and therapeutic treatment to victims of domestic violence. Help us make a difference in the lives of our neighbors, children, co-workers, and friends. Domestic violence knows no boundaries.

Simchahs at the Beach Hillel kicks off this new academic year with Week of Welcome at CSULB’s Campus! Students are very excited to become involved in Hillel and are eager to learn more about what we have to offer. We had a great time tabling and meeting the new students of Hillel this year, and we are very excited to see over 50 different faces of Jewish students in attendance at our Shabbat dinners thus far. Hillel Programming Associate Jonathan Grunin is thrilled to see that the hard

work and dedication of the Beach Hillel staff is resulting in large turnouts to regularly scheduled programs such as Shabbat. “This is a true simchah,” says Jonathan, “where the work put in results in an amazing turnout. Fulfilling the mission of Hillel in the collegiate community is, for all intents and purposes, a Jewish communal simchah.” It is Hillel’s mission to cultivate Jewish experiences through positive engagement. Providing students with their own personal simchahs is part of that mission. Senior

Hillel’s Sukkah Hangout Beach Hillel is excited to have celebrated sukkot again this year with Jewish students from the Long Beach area. Bringing an innovative approach to celebrating tra-

ditional Jewish holidays in a college setting has excited the students and provided them with a positive Jewish identity. Beach Hillel kicked off

Beach Hillel students enjoying a meal at Hillel’s annual Pizza-in-the-Hut event

Bryon Gillis returned from a Taglit-Birthright trip where he had his Bar Mitzvah ceremony. When asked about how he felt about this experience, he responded “No comment. It would be insulting to my own experience to put into words what I felt at that moment… having a bar mitzvah in Israel, in Jerusalem.” Beach Hillel is proud to say that it will continue to stay positively Jewish and provide these meaningful simchahs to Jewish students in the area.

Sukkot by building its own sukkah on campus. This empowering student experience helped the Jewish students of Beach Hillel strengthen their own connection with Judaism and bond with other students through a confidence building activity. We hosted our annual Pizza-in-the-Hut event for students to meet and eat in the sukkah between their class times. Our students were very excited to participate again in our Annual Sukkah Hop, where Beach Hillel teamed up with Jewish students in

Hillel Programming Associate Jonathan Grunin (2nd from left) connecting with Hillel students at CSULB’s Week of Welcome

Orange County to gather the Jewish student community in the area and enjoy the holiday of Sukkot together. We visited different sukkahs in the Orange County area, dined in them, and demonstrated to students how they can still maintain a Jewish identity even throughout their post University careers. Lastly, Beach Hillel hosted its “Shabbat under the Stars” dinner, where students gathered at Hillel Board of Directors President Josh Kaplan’s sukkah, to enjoy a festive Shabbat dinner. The Sukkot tradition

upheld at the CSULB campus not only serves the Jewish students, but also shows and teaches the general campus population about the holiday itself. Hillel works to make large scale, noticeable events to increase the awareness of Jewish culture on campus for all students. We, at Beach Hillel, had so much fun celebrating the holiday and are excited to help our students stay positively Jewish at the Beach!

Middle Eastern Jews & the Arab-Israeli Conflict

Dr. Moshe Naor

CSULB’s Jewish Studies Program is pleased to present Dr. Moshe Naor at the Alpert JCC on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:30 pm. His talk, entitled “Middle Eastern Jews and the ArabIsraeli Conflict,” will examine the influence of the ArabIsraeli conflict on the Jewish communities in the Middle East, while placing it in the context of the current discussion in Israel on the exodus of

the Jews from Arab countries as immigrants and refugees. Dr. Moshe Naor is the Leichtag Visiting Israeli Scholar at the Jewish Studies Program of San Diego State University. He received his Ph.D. in History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The lecture series is free and open to the community. For more information, contact Jeffrey Blutinger at 562-9852196.

Early Detection of Speech Needs School Safety Do you know how much our children depend on their hearing and speech to learn to read and succeed in school? Studies show that students who have speech or language development support early on in their academic career (before 2nd grade) are more successful than those who do not. What is worrisome is that students who have unaddressed speech challenges will most likely continue to struggle academically; whereby if trained at any age to improve their speech, students will improve their ability to learn and remember material at a faster rate. Speech training can help improve vocabulary, articulation, the

ability to follow directions, expressive or receptive language, social skills and overall confidence. We are lucky to have the support of parent, Elizabeth Nideffer, who runs OC Speech Services. Her group provides free screenings for the students, which are performed by Licensed Speech-Language Pathologists and take place during the scheduled school day. We look forward to helping our Hebrew Academy students next year and for many years to come. If you would like more information about early detection or speech instruction, please contact Dr. Carlson at mcarlson@hacds. org.

As a school, we take preparing for all kinds of emergencies seriously. Currently, Deborah Wilcoxson, our assistant principal in charge of safety, is meeting with other Huntington Beach schools, both public and private, to establish protocols for helping each other if outside intervention is needed. In other words, if a safety concern other than a natural disaster occurs, such as an intruder arriving on our campus, we can call the Huntington Beach Safety Team for back-up help. This system and training will truly support and maintain our students’ health and safety.

Beer-Sheva High-Tech Park Inauguration

Jim Breslauer at Beer-Sheva’s Advanced Technologies Park

Jim Breslauer has been a long-time local community philanthropist, most recently retiring from a productive and successful term as the Jewish Federation President. As President, Jim helped accomplish many of the goals set for the Federation, some of which included allocating money to our local synagogues to help fund Jewish education; helping to start the Fund for our Future Campaign, which will ensure the long-term vibrancy of our community and our partnership agencies; and successfully launching the Solomon Society, providing men in our community the opportunity to fuel their passion for community building. Despite his busy schedule locally, Jim and his family foundation, the Breslauer-Soref Foundation, was able to find time in 2007 to go to Israel with Marvin J.Suomi, President and CEO of KUD International LLC, to collaborate on the building of Beer-Sheva’s Advanced Technologies Park (ATP) in Negev with MK Professor Avishay Braverman, President of Ben-Gurion University (BGU) at the time.

With KUD’s support, they were able to bring the parties together to develop the project and move it to the national agenda. A joint public-private partnership of BGU, the Beer-Sheva Municipality, KUD International LLC, and Gav-Yam Negev, the first building of the ATP was completed and occupied this summer by international companies that include Oracle, Deutsche Telekom, EMC², RSA, and ECI Telecom. The site was designed by KUD International LLC, based in Long Beach and a subsidiary of the Japanbased Kajima Corporation, one of the world’s largest development and construction firms. A similar amount of space next to the commercial park will be used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), whose elite technology units are relocating to the Negev to take advantage of the resources at BGU and in the ATP. For the project culmination, Jim was in attendance at the inauguration and official

opening of the park on Sept. 3 in Beer-Sheva, Israel. Also in attendance were Mayor of Beer-Sheva Ruvik Danilovich, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, BGU President Rivka Carmi, and MK Professor Avishay Braverman. Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that “we are launching the economic anchor that will turn Beer-Sheva into a national and international center for cyber security. We are changing the future of Israel and we are doing it in Beer-Sheva.” Asked about his experience at the ceremony, Jim stated he couldn’t have been happier, “I felt gratified that I was able to be a part of such an important endeavor from start to finish. It gave me a feeling of accomplishment to see our dream of over a dozen years ago become a reality and fulfill our goals of enhancing Ben-Gurion University and fulfilling David Ben Gurion’s dream of populating the Negev.”
