A New Year, New Beginnings

for new beginnings. eeeAs we celebrate the holidays, looking back at the past year we reflect on a number of new initiatives that have begun to emerge through our Jewish Community Partnership agencies. New beginnings include new agency leadership, and expanded funding of community activities through the Federation Annual Campaign and joint agency fundraising.

Kathryn’s goals for the organization include expanding JFCS’s reach into the community through new collaborations with schools and local agencies, building internal capacity in order to grow current programs, and establishing new funding streams. According to Kathryn, “JFCS has the unique opportunity to provide services to people in all stages of life. We see an increased need for services in the schools to assist children dealing with complex issues that interfere with their ability to learn. With an aging population, there is also a need for a strong Older Adult Services program.” New Funding Opportunities The partnership between the agencies and the Federation and Foundation will continue to grow under the leadership of Jeffrey and Kathryn. I am excited about their becoming a part of our Jewish Community Partnership leadership team, and am excited about working with them and my current agency colleagues, Rabbi Yitzchok Newman of the Hebrew Academy and Long Beach Hillel Executive Director Rachel Kaplan. Kaplan and Newman were on the original team which helped us create two highly successful Legacy of Leadership joint fundraising events under the coordination of the Jewish Community Foundation. The most recent 2013 event in January allowed us to allocate an additional $25,000 to each member agency, above and beyond the normal Annual Campaign allocations. These additional funds are very helpful in augmenting the services our partner agencies provide our community. The event was also an important kick-off for the Fund for Our Future Campaign which will help ensure the long-term vibrancy of our community and our partnership agencies.

Opening Night & Film Festival A new year is soon upon us; kick it off with a bang on Opening Night 2014, with the launch of both the 2014 Annual Campaign and the 2013 Long Beach Jewish Film Festival – in one night, Thursday, October 10. The Jewish Federation’s 2014 Annual Campaign begins to raise much needed funds for the Jewish Community Partnership agencies, which include The Jewish Community Foundation, Alpert Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family and Children’s Service, The Hebrew Academy and Hillel. The 2013 Long Beach Jewish Film Festival offers five unique experiences of prominent Jewish-themed films over three days (see page 2a for 2013 Film Schedule). Opening Night will showcase Hava Nagila (The Movie), high on fun and entertainment and surprisingly profound. This is a documentary romp through the history, mystery and meaning of the great Jewish standard. Opening Night begins with red carpet arrivals and a pre-screening sparkling wine & divine bites hour in
the dazzling Lentzner Family Promenade and the Leon & Barbara Shoag Rotunda. While toasting to the year ahead and sampling delicious kosher faire, you will have an opportunity to make your pledge for the 2014 Annual Campaign. From here, follow the crowd of movie goers into the Amy & Richard Lipeles Family Auditorium for the screening of the movie. The Greater Long Beach Jewish community is a vibrant place with many agencies and synagogues offering a wide variety of programs and services. However, one of the best kept secrets in our community is the Jewish Community Foundation. The Foundation provides a variety of services to both individuals and organizations. Did you know that through the Jewish Community Foundation… You can make donations to all your favorite charities by writing just one check If you write multiple checks to several non-profit organizations over the course of the year, then opening a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund at The Jewish Community Foundation will allow you to centralize your charitable dollars in one convenient account. This user-friendly fund provides maximum tax advantages and flexibility. You make the tax-deductible contributions when it is convenient
for you, and then recommend gifts over time to any qualified non-profit organization in both the Jewish and secular communities (excluding dues and fees for goods and services). The Foundation writes and sends the checks for you. Funds can be established with a minimum contribution of $1,000 or more in cash or securities. Donors Don & Andrea Kaiser have this to say about their experience, “We set up the Don and Andrea Kaiser Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund through the Jewish Community Foundation several years ago. Why are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur so early this year? By Rabbi Nancy Myers
Can you believe that Rosh Hashanah begins on Wednesday, September 4th? This is just days after Labor Day weekend! Many of us are still unpacking from our summer trips, getting our children acclimated to school, and the Santa Ana winds are blowing strong. It’s hard to believe that we will be dipping apples and honey and hearing the sound of the shofar so early in September. How can Rosh Hashanah be celebrated so close to Labor Day? Some of you have also noticed that this winter the first day of Chanukah will be celebrated on Thanksgiving. We will be lighting two candles as we finish our turkey feast. This is a highly unusual even for the Jewish calendar.
More commonly, Chanukah will fall anywhere between the end of November or celebrated during the Christian holiday of Christmas. What’s going on with our holidays this year? Our Jewish holidays shift over weeks because our calendar is primarily a lunar one. The first day of the Hebrew month begins with the new moon and on the 15th day there is always a full moon. This is why, if you look up at the night sky on the first day of Sukkot and Passover, you will always see a beautiful full moon. Since it takes the moon 29 or 30 days to rotate around the earth, our Hebrew months will vary in length. If you add up the days of the lunar calendar you will have 354
days, eleven days shorter than the solar calendar. If left unchecked, our holidays would drift earlier and earlier until Rosh Hashanah would be in the spring and Passover in the winter. As an aside, Muslims use a lunar calendar and this is why Ramadan moves through the cycle of the seasons. However, for us Jews, it is undesirable to light Chanukah candles in August and celebrate Passover in December, so we make a calendar correction. For thousands of years, Jews every two to three years have added an additional month in the winter time. For example, this winter of 2014, we will have an additional month of Adar in the secular month of February. This will push Passover later in the
spring, make the following Rosh Hasha- Rabbi Nancy nah later in Rita Myers September, and prevent our holidays from slipping to an earlier and earlier time. Even though by our secular perspective the Jewish holidays either appear early or late, they are actually right on time. Every year, Rosh Hashanah is always the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishri, and ready or not, on September 5 we will be eating honey cake, praying at synagogue, and hearing the blasts of the shofar. AJCC Dance Mondays Line Dance 2 - Easy Intermediate Class September 16-October 21 6 Mondays, 7pm This class is for long-term beginners that want some new dances and are ready for a little challenge. You’ll learn more difficult combinations of steps which contain 32 to 64 counts. This class will get you ready to move to the challenge class while teaching you how to make a line dance as easy or as challenging as you like. $65; $50/MVP
Line Dance Challenge Class September 16-October 21 6 Mondays, 8pm The Line Dance Challenge class is for the somewhat experienced line dancer. Students in this class will be expected to memorize longer dances and be able to turn frequently (there will be options offered for those not comfortable with the turns). What’s the Hebrew Word For Charity? The Hebrew word for charity is….well, there is none. Often, we define the word tzedakah as charity, but that isn’t quite right. Tzedakah actually means righteousness or doing the right thing. As Jews, we maintain a fundamental belief that doing the right thing will automatically cause us to act charitably toward others. The AJCC’s Annual Appeal is an excellent opportunity for our members to practice tzedakah, or to do the right thing.
Kids University The Blueprint for Your Child’s Success What makes Kids University, the Alpert JCC’s popular afterschool enrichment program, so successful? It probably starts with the fact that our buses are waiting at many Long Beach area schools when that final bell rings. The fact that we have trained experienced staff on hand to work with each child is certainly a plus. And the safety and security that parents have come to expect from the AJCC is one more reason. Supervised homework assistance means that each child is focused on what’s most important. The enrichment classes that range from computer lab to swimming to theater arts, dance, Judaic studies and more – well, they all make up the so-called icing on the cake! Make an appointment to discuss Kids University with Program Director Natalie Chernik, and you’ll be able to make your own assessment of how the Alpert JCC’s Kids University is truly designed to make each and every child more successful in and out of the classroom.
Each year, the AJCC provides over $225,000 in scholarships and financial assistance. But, more importantly, we change people’s lives for the better. Our members’ generosity has enabled hundreds of children to attend our highly acclaimed preschool and hundreds more to spend the summer learning new skills and starting life-long friendships at our summer camps. Originally from Oregon, Elsie started her water polo career in high school. After joining the U.S. senior national team in 2006, Elsie helped the team win several first-place finishes. In 2008, Elsie competed in the Beijing Olympic Games, where Team USA won the silver medal in Women’s Water Polo. At the 2009 FINA World Championship, Elsie scored six goals to help win the gold medal. Elsie went on to win a gold medal in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Each Friday they present the Tzedakah box they made for the children. They plan to donate the proceeds directly to JFCS. Equally important, they brought their classroom up for a tour of JFCS to learn first hand how they can have a direct impact on someone’s life. tiple student organizations including Buffalo’s Hillel. Jonathan will continue his work with the Jewish community here in Long Beach. Working alongside the Hillel staff, he will engage Jewish students with meaningful Jewish experiences that they can enjoy within their university years and continue to explore throughout their Jewish journey. “My first Shabbat dinner in Long Beach was inspirational. Meeting the Jewish students of the area was powerfully motivating,” says Jonathan. He adds, “Starting out the new year in a new place, with a new job could not be more in the spirit of Rosh Hashanah. I am happy to be here.” We are excited to welcome Jonathan to our team here at Beach Hillel.

We Make Learning Top Priority at the Hebrew Academy
Sounds simple, right? Schools should make learning the top priority. However, with various funding issues, perspectives on what students “should” be learning and staffing needs, to name a few distractions, often focusing on student learning is not as simple to stay on track as one might surmise. We have taken many steps to focus on our high caliber educational environment and instruction. We look forward to reaping the rewards for our focused and well-planned improvements throughout many years
to come. A simple list is all we will provide in this article. If we have whetted your appetite to learn more, please contact Dr. Megan Carlson at mcarlson@hacds.org. • Strategic Planning – We have worked diligently to help build a foundation of well researched plans for improving the school in the following main areas: academics, marketing, development and enrollment. Our goal is to continue to offer a well-articulated and integrated mission that draws the type of students to our school who will flourish in our program. • Professional Learning Communities – Most of our teachers have volunteered to work this summer to enhance and better sequence our cur-
riculum. The teachers are invigorated and ready to share their ideas and instruction with our wonderful students. Furthermore, we have two wonderful academic coaches from Innovative Educators who, for the second year, will continue to help us develop and implement stellar curriculum. • Library Upgrade – Thanks to a grass roots effort from some caring parents, we were able to redo our library this summer. This metamorphous was much needed and well-deserved. We can’t wait to watch as our parents come in to volunteer in the library and they see this beautiful learning center; we will all get so much out of this space – reading, researching and even an area to give presentations to the class. • iPad Purchase – Thanks to Mr. A. Alevy and his family, we were able to purchase an
iPad cart. Teachers will work this summer to become experts in iPad integration into the classroom. Then, those who are ready to be the pioneers will check the cart out for use in the classrooms. Our Director of Curriculum and Instructional Technology will be mentoring teachers throughout the year so that all teachers will feel prepared and well-equipped. The best part of this endeavor is our grand step toward ensuring more engaging and instructional classroom experiences for our students. Each and every decision we make is based on the litmus tests of our mission and student happiness and success. As we move well into this millennium, it is incumbent upon us to equip our students to make a positive difference in the complex world to which we will send them.
