FEATURE STORY
Your Gift Powers: Engagement; Hope; Companionship By Danny Levy, Director of Development
Be the start of something powerful. Here at home and around the world, Federation works to support, sustain and revitalize Jewish life. But we can’t do it without you. Your contribution is what makes everything possible, enabling us to meet the needs of people in ways no any other organization can or will.
Case Study
Engagement Federation powers the Jewish community in ways you might not think, from sending PJ Library books to families worldwide to supporting Jewish camps, Birthright trips & more! But it can’t happen without you. Hope Federation powers the Jewish community in ways you might think of it, in places you’d never suspect – from stocking food banks in war-torn communities to providing meals for seniors here at home. But we can’t do it without you. Companionship Where there is suffering, Federation provides hope. We go where we’re needed, helping individuals and communities rebuild their lives. But we can’t be there without you.
Hurricane Harvey – one of the most devastating hurricanes on record in U.S. history – delivered some of its worst blows to Houston, Texas’s Jewish community. Nearly three-quarters of the city’s Jewish population live in areas that received extensive flooding, and nearly every Jewish-owned business and institution has felt the impact in some way. There were 17,000 people in need of rescue. The homes of 2,000 families in the Houston Jewish community were destroyed. Beth Yeshurun lost its school, offices, sanctuary — their synagogue — their one communal home — the home to countless weddings and b’nai mitzvahs. A trillion gallons of water fell over four days, destroying homes, neighborhoods, and cherished community institutions. It was apparent that we needed to be there — to help, to hug, to listen, to rebuild, and to make an impact. I was with the first Federation team on site, along with my Houston colleagues — many victims themselves. Then we did what Federation does best: We got to work. We created a command center of support for the entire Houston Jewish Community — and beyond! We worked long days to help the people of Houston. We arranged financial assistance. Provided day care options for children so that their parents could go back to work. Organized volunteers to do much-needed cleaning work in homes. Helped rabbis support their congregants. Unloaded deliveries from across the country at the distribution center. There was no task too big or too small. And there was no way any one community could have done this on their own. But the incredible thing was — they didn’t have to. When disaster hits, our Jewish Federation family stands together. In just a few weeks, nearly $15M of the estimated $30M needed was raised to support this community in need. It was amazing. Houston not only had the support of the entire Federation movement — they also received a huge, unprecedented $1M grant from the government of Israel. You know, for years we’ve been talking about the future of Federation. Whether or not young people can find ways to connect to an “umbrella” organization. But it’s times like these when I know I’m part of a strong and dynamic collective. Something that truly changes and saves lives... showing how strong we are when we work together as one. It’s these moments of tremendous solidarity that remind us of why the collective will continue for generations to come. It’s why we are there, time and time again, for Jews everywhere. When they need to be supported. When they need to rebuild. And when they need to be strengthened. Year after year. For 86 years. We need to keep coming together to help our Jewish community recover from this disaster and from ones in the future. It’s because of you that we are “am echad, b’lev echad.” One people. One heart. One strong, vibrant movement.
Powerful Goodness is not a single act. It’s the sum of many parts. Which is why Federation is always at work, powering the Jewish community in ways you might not think of, in places you’d never suspect. We’re there in times of crisis, sowing the seeds of hope. We’re there in quiet moments that transform lives and strengthen our legacy. Right now, thousands of people need us in a multitude of ways. This is your moment to help. Join us, and be the start of something powerful. Jewish learning is a torch that illuminates our history and our future. Federation works to keep the flame burning bright. From a Passover storybook that arrives on the doorstep of an interfaith family – to a scholarship that helps a child attend day school. From Hebrew classes at the AJCC – to insights gleaned at our Jewish Film Festival, your gift helps power Jewish learning in endless ways. How does faith fit into your life? What does being Jewish mean? Your gift helps people of all ages and backgrounds discover their own personal answers – through Birthright trips, community gatherings and more. As they learn, we’re learning, too: how to modernize traditions to keep them relevant, while preserving their meaning. As people awaken to the power and promise of their Jewish identity, new seeds are planted, and our legacy is strengthened. - Excerpt from Becky Sobelman-Stern, Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles In the midst of suffering, Federation can offer strength. Here at home and in more than seventy rebuild in the wake of natural or financial disasters, Donate today, and be the start of something countries worldwide, we go where the needs are and ensuring that families in crisis are never without powerful, visit jewishlongbeach.org/donate or greatest – supporting communities working to food, clothing, shelter, warmth or medicine. contact Danny Levy, 562-426-7601 ext. 1007. 2 | JEWISH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE |

Alan Brawer Chair, Above & Beyond 2018
What is Above & Beyond Above & Beyond is a Jewish Federation’s Men’s Philanthropy Annual Community Campaign event. The evening brings together men from all over the community to celebrate the power we have to care for the vulnerable, to be committed to the survival of the Jewish people, to invest in the future of our children, and to rescue those in need no matter where they live or how they worship. This year, Above & Beyond is on Monday, March 26, 2018. Going Above and Beyond The evening is also an opportunity to honor local men who go above and beyond in support, and leadership, throughout our community and are nominated by their agencies and synagogues. As chair of Above & Beyond 2018, I am really looking forward to honoring these amazing and deserving men in our community. Special Guest Speaker Joining the program will be Captain Jon Kurtz, USN (Ret.) Former Commanding Officer, Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach (20062009). ENSURE OUR FUTURE Are You a Secret Member of the Legacy Society? By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development
Thank you, thank you, thank you….We can never say “Thank You” enough to all of our community members who make Jewish life possible through their continued support of our Jewish agencies, schools and synagogues. However, we need to ask you an important question. Are you a Secret Member of the Legacy Society? Have you protected your lifelong investment in our Jewish community by including a gift to the Jewish community in your will or trust? If you have, then you are already a member of the Legacy Society. If you have not, then we invite you to make a promise today to make a difference tomorrow. We are asking you to consider including a gift in your will or trust to the Jewish community through the Jewish Community Foundation. By signing a Letter of Intent to leave a bequest, of any size, you will automatically
become a Legacy Society Member. Legacy Society members will be recognized at the Foundation’s Legacy Society Brunch on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at 11:00am on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus. The Brunch is hosted by the Jewish Community Foundation and planned by the Foundation’s Legacy Committee. Legacy chair Nicole Honigman states, “The Legacy Society Brunch is just one way we express our deep gratitude to community members who share a commitment to ensure that our Jewish community and the people we serve, will thrive for generations to come.” Making Your Legacy Gift is Easy Every family and financial situation is unique and bequests of all amounts are needed. To become a member of the Legacy
Society, you do not need to divulge the amount of your gift, you simply need to let us know that you intend to leave something in your will or trust. A bequest left through the Jewish Community Foundation can benefit all the charities you care about, both Jewish and secular. There are many ways to leave a bequest: and some options include a simple bequest in a will or trust; a named endowment or special purpose fund; an outright gift using appreciated assets or cash; distributions from an IRA or pension plan; designation of a life insurance policy; a charitable gift annuity and more. The Jewish Community Foundation is ready to assist you in starting the conversation to find the right philanthropic path for you and your family. From Isolation to Holy Community By Rabbinic Student Ariel Wolpe
Sitting in a circle with residents of Beit T’shuvah, in treatment for addiction, I hear a Rabbinic common Student t h e m e Ariel Wolpe emerge all around the room. A group of fifteen women are reflecting on their week, how they reached their goals and where they could improve, listening and encouraging one another. And yet, every other speaker shares feelings of isolation. “I’ve been staying in my room when I feel depressed, even though I know I should go downstairs,” one woman says. Another adds, “I don’t know how to reach out. There are people all around, but I feel
utterly alone.” Who doesn’t relate to that sentiment? Loneliness is among the most common, and the darkest, of human emotions. It is the first piece of creation that God fixes, when God declares, “it is not good for the human to be alone,” and fashions someone to draw Adam out of isolation. Although the road from loneliness means reaching out for help, it is often hindered by the belief that no one will understand, by fear of judgement, and by frustration when the effort doesn’t reap immediate reward. Paralyzed by shame and doubt, we turn to our phones as companions, to our drugs for comfort. When I was in high school, I felt incredibly alone, certain that no-one understood me.
one way the Jewish tradition attempts to battle loneliness. The Torah teaches us to open our eyes to the world around us, to help the poor and the disabled, to welcome the stranger and visit the sick, to create connections between souls through daily mitzvot. Throughout the ages, Jewish thinkers have explored different ways to strive to encounter each person as a thou, as a holy being with the breath of God flowing in and through them. When my Beit T’shuvah clients feel alone and closed to the world, I let them know that I am there for them. And then, if they are willing, I invite them to feel the divinity within them, to help them know that they matter, that they are part of a greater whole. I guide
I peered out at an unfriendly world from a stone castle, and although I knew the walls were my own, I could not break through them. In desperation, I turned to a lay-led minyan at my family synagogue for comfort. I was the youngest attendee by many years, but I didn’t come to socialize—I would sit among the daveners and listen to their voices, to the earnestness in their prayers. I investigated my own feelings in the safety of friendly faces and the singing of familiar songs; I voiced my pain and my desires through the words of my ancestors. I became part of something beyond myself, one of many, an individual traveler swept up in a river of journeyers. A minyan, a gathering of 10 Jewish adults, is only
them in reciting blessings, in meditating on their soul, or help them speak or sing to God in their own words. More often than not, a kind, listening presence can break the ice of isolation. Each one of us can give this gift. Connection is at the core of being Jewish, of creating holy community. We can draw one another out with an outstretched arm, and shelter each soul with loving words and open hearts. Ariel Root Wolpe is a musician, spiritual counselor and 4th year rabbinical student at American Jewish University. Ariel fuses her rabbinic learning and original music to create rituals and prayers for her community. She is associated with P’nai Or and other local synagogues. You can explore Ariel’s music, projects and her blog at www.arielwolpe.com

Race with a View—from the Chair By Dr. Mark Dressner, Jewish Family & Children’s Service - Race With A View Committee Chairman
Dr. Mark Dressner
Chairman, Race With A View Committee
I am so privileged to be the Race chair once again for Race with a View, Jewish Family & Children’s Service annual 5K/10K to raise funds to support mental health services for everyone in our community. This is such a fun
morning as we use a physical event to support mental health and kick off National Mental Health Awareness month. What a beautiful way to start a Sunday morning as we meet at the Aquarium, running or walking along the route, with beautiful views of the best of what Long Beach and our natural world of the shore have to offer. The proceeds support the programs and services offered by JFCS. A recent item in the daily
California Helpline said: “A new report from UC San Francisco’s Healthforce Center finds if current trends continue, California will have 41 percent fewer psychiatrists than needed, and 11 percent fewer psychologists than needed by 2028. The aging of California behavioral health workforce is a major factor.” Not only is JFCS the only agency in Long Beach that provides affordable mental
health services to all age groups from children to seniors, but the agency is also training the next generation of professionals in the field of counseling. Many of JFCS’ clients are counseled by well supervised graduate and post-graduate level interns who need to complete 3000 hours in order to be licensed professionals. So not only does JFCS help provide much needed services, we also make it possible to launch
more licensed mental health professionals into the world, and filling the large need as mentioned above. Come run or walk with us on Sunday May 6! Enjoy being with friends and family as we spend a beautiful morning together supporting JFCS and so many people— your friends, our neighbors—in need of our services.

Whenever you may meet a social worker or see them in action, please thank them for helping to heal our community, one person, one family at a time.
March is Social Work Month!! By Leslie R. Evans, LCSW, JFCS Director of Social Work & Older Adult Services
Celebrated each March, National Professional Social Work Month is an opportunity for social workers across the country to turn the spotlight on the profession and highlight the important contributions they make to society. The official theme for March 2018 is “Social Workers: Leaders. Advocates. Champions.” Social workers have amazing tenacity and talent. The 680,000+ social work professionals in the U.S. confront some of the most challenging issues facing individuals, families, communities and society
and forge solutions that help people reach their full potential and make our world a better place to live. At JFCS, we are fortunate to have a strong team of dedicated social work staff and interns who work tirelessly to help to enhance human well-being and meet the basic needs of our community, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of those who are vulnerable, oppressed or living in poverty. Here are some of the many ways the JFCS social work department has recently helped the community:

Is More Fun Really Possible? Intergenerational Day 2018
Building on the successes of last year, Camp Silver Gan Israel (SGI) is excited to announce its purchasing of new, fun equipment for this upcoming summer. Camp Silver Gan Israel prides itself in constantly upping its game and making the camp experience more fun and wholesome for its campers. With plans to purchase a huge Inflatable Meltdown 8 Player Action Game, Camp SGI is also excited about adding water tag and some new trips lined up for this summer. Every summer, Camp SGI stays current with purchases of new games and equipment. On its 11-acre safe and secure campus in Huntington Beach, CA, Camp SGI provides more varied and age-appropriate activities than any other camp. “When kids have fun being Jewish, Judaism is more likely to be a part of their life,” said Rabbi Sender Engel, Camp SGI director. “While having fun, the kids develop positive Jewish memories and connections to community while seeing significant growth in self-esteem, leadership, social skills, and independence.” Camp Silver Gan Israel’s program runs from June
25 through August 24 with flexible enrollment options. Every day will be actionpacked and full of fun. Parents will be happy to know that their children are in a safe and well-supervised environment and will come home with new lessons, friends, skills, and spirited camp songs. Programs go on everyday to encourage Jewish campers to go outside their comfort zones, establish friendships with other youth, express their creativity, and explore the many possibilities are out there in a fun, exciting manner. The phenomenal staff and counselors of Camp Silver Gan Israel are positive role models and have a warm, nurturing touch. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association and has its own EMT on staff. Camp SGI’s summer camp program is for children ages 3-14 and is conveniently located right off the 405 freeway. Transportation, extended care, and hot lunches are available. Parents can learn more, register and request a camp tour by visiting www. CampSGI.com or by contacting Rabbi Sender at (949) 381.5610 ext. 101 or Sender@CampSGI.com

A wonderful annual event took place on January 31st at Hebrew Academy of Orange County to connect students and their families over education, values, and traditions. The school’s annual Intergenerational Day took place on the Hebrew date of Tu b’Shevat, the Jewish New Year for Trees with many related activities and festivities including planting etrog trees in the school’s Israel orchard as a symbol of continuing life and passing on of traditions. The celebration was full of meaningful experiences

for the children and adults alike. It was an opportunity for students to connect with other generations in their family, whether grandparents, aunts, uncles or other family members. The opportunity for non-parental family members to visit the students’ school offered them a way to connect to their experiences at school, not only scholastically and socially, but also experientially. The school created this special day to honor grandparents and family members, to give them the opportunity to show love for their children’s children and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer. This program brought the kind of joy that brings tears to the eyes. Students learn shared culture and norms
while, for the grown-ups, it reduces social isolation and fulfills a need to nurture and teach. This year’s activities for Intergenerational Day 2018 included: painting family trees, Israeli dancing, and sports & games in the soccer field. The middle school students had a fun parachutefall activity to share. Over 350 participants enjoyed a nutritional lunch in the large outdoor covered patio with entertainment provided by the school’s choir singing Hebrew and Jewish songs.

The winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for his profile of his father, Ariel Sabar began his journey to discover his family’s extraordinary past in an ancient land in the lost Aramaic language. Sabar’s father, Yona,
was born in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. Protected by mountains, the Jews of Zakho dwelt peacefully among Muslims and Christians for hundreds of years. Yona Sabar would be the last boy to be bar mitzvahed in Zakho, before he and his family joined the mass exodus of 120,000 Jews from Iraq. This talk is free and open to the public.
