Author Events The Festival opens on Monday, November 5 at 7:30 pm with a talk by author Maggie Anton. Anton is the author of Rav Hisda’s Daughter: A Novel of Love, the Talmud and Sorcery. In the book, Hisdadukh, blessed to be beautiful and learned, is the youngest child of Talmudic sage Rav Hisda. The world around her is full of conflict, and against this backdrop Hisdadukh embarks on the tortuous path to become an enchantress in the very land where the word “magic” originated. Our own Yetta Kane will be speaking on Wednesday, November 7 at 7:30 pm. Yetta Kane and her late husband Cantor David Kane are authors of the book How to Survive Anything. “We wrote our memoir not only for our parents and family, but for people and children all over. We learned many lessons from the past, good and bad. What we learned, we applied to creat-
Films Rosecarrie Brooks the film festival chair, along with Al Rudis, film selection chair, and the committee members, Dr. Jeffrey Blutinger, Harriette Ellis, Dr. Matt Davis, Ronnie Levine, Gordon Lentzner, Gerda Seifer, Renee Simon, Elaine Warren, Lander Warren, Jay Alhadeff, and Jon Sommers, have selected films from Israel, USA and France. The films are a unique blend of drama, comedy and documentaries that show the complexities of Jewish life around the globe. The film festival opens with a film from Israel, Footnote, on Thursday, November 8 at 7:30 pm. In the movie, father and son scholars at Hebrew University examine the same arcane data. In an academia full of petty jealousies, one is popular, one is bitter. In contrast to their dry research, their contentious love hate relationship is alive and messy, and now the awarding of the coveted Israel Prize, the Israeli version of the Nobel, threatens to explode their insular world. On Saturday, November 10 at 7:30 pm the festival continues with Nicky’s Family, a documentary from the Czech Republic. In 1938, British stockbroker Nicholas Winton changed his plans for a ski vacation in Switzerland to visit a friend in Prague who was working to help Jewish refugees. Nobody knew what he did there until his wife finds a suitcase in the attic with a hidden scrapbook 60 years later, and the discovery astonishes her, his children, and eventually the whole world. It shined a light on a reticent hero’s achievements that resulted in his knighthood and a petition by 120,000 children in the Czech Republic for him to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. The last day of the festival, Sunday, November

11, brings three powerful films Hitler’s Children at 10:30 am, Dolphin Boy at 2:00 pm and The Day I Saw Your Heart at 7:00 pm. In Hitler’s Children, Israeli filmmaker Chanoch Zeevi finds descendents of Adolf Eichmann, Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler and Hans Frank (whose son’s godfather was Adolf Hitler) and they share the stories of how each of them has dealt with the shadow of a ghastly heritage that has darkened their entire lives. In Dolphin Boy, a young Arab-Israeli teenager becomes a living zombie after being attacked by his girlfriend’s family, who believes he has dishonored her. In this stranger-than-fiction documentary, his therapist sends him to Eilat to see if animals can heal the soul that humans can’t reach. In The Day I Saw Your Heart, a comedy from France, a moody daughter discards men as quickly as she finds them. She can’t deal with her cranky father, who is upset by his younger second wife’s pregnancy, which also grates on his other daughter, who cannot conceive and is trying to adopt. Only the French can turn a family story such as this into a charming, whimsical comedy-drama. Visual Arts In conjunction with the author events and films, The Pauline & Zena Gatov Gallery at the AJCC presents Gilad BenAri & Guy Echo: Arts Judaica from November 1 - November 29. BenAri, a wellrecognized Israeli photographer, has a unique eye for some of the greatest artistry ever captured on camera. His visionary style has caught the attention of the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, which has used his images to help promote Israel throughout the world. Echo transforms these images into art for your home, from affordable canvas prints to highdefinition wall hangings. The exhibit is FREE & open to the public. For additional information on the films and the Jewish Cultural Arts Festival, please contact Susan Paletz, Director of Program Development & Community Engagement of the AJCC at 562-426-7601 EXT 1012.

Passing the Legacy Torch As part of the Legacy of Leadership Event, we will be honoring two couples: Binnie & Jack Berro and Amy & Rich Lipeles whose continual leadership and contributions have benefited the community in so many ways. For the first time we are also honoring one organization from the community who truly makes a difference, Keesal, Young & Logan. Amy & Rich Lipeles will receive the Rodef Tzedek (Pursuer of Justice) Award which was created to honor community members who represent our tradition of seeking justice wherever it is Amy & Rich Lipeles needed, to take on challenges and build bridges to communal organizations. Prior recipients of this award are Gene Lentzner in 2007 and Mort & Susan Stuhlbarg in 2011. The Lipeles’ both work tirelessly to serve the community and they have served in leadership roles at Temple Israel, the Jewish Federation, the Jewish Community Foundation, the Alpert Jewish Community Center, the California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ), International City Theatre, the PTA, National Charity League, UCLA School of Public Health and Childnet. Amy currently serves as President of Temple Israel and is a past president of Women’s Philanthropy. Rich is a past president of both the Federation and the Foundation. Binnie & Jack were key in the development of the Long Beach downtown YMCA, the Long Beach Symphony, the AIDS Hospice Network, Habitat for Humanity, Community Hospital and many more Beach Long Binnie & Jack Berro based groups. As the years went by, the Berros’ became invested in other groups in both the Jewish and greater Long Beach community such as Temple Israel, Alpert JCC, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Long Beach Library Foundation, Centro Shalom, and California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ). Binnie & Jack have two daughters, Michele & Denise, and three grandchildren: Aaron, Nathan, & Miriam. Marheshvan: In Celebration of the Return to the Rest of the Year By Rabbi Drew Kaplan
The whirlwind element of the fall holiday season for us Jews can be quite dizzying; between Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and continuing on through Simhat Torah, there’s a lot! It really all starts before Rosh Hashanah, with Selichot, where Jews customarily recite petitions to God for their sins to be forgiven. Reaching the two days of Rosh Hashanah, we then have long prayer services asking to be judged favorably for the year, accompanied by Shofar blasts announcing God’s coronation. The season really gets going in full swing as the next week works its way up to Yom Kippur, with Selichot continuing. The Day of Atonement is noted for having the longest prayer services of the year, accompanied by fasting and the emotional intensity of knowing that our tradition ascribes this day as being the last day of deliberation concerning our fate for the year to come and its being
sealed “in the books”. Then, shortly thereafter, we begin building our booths for the holiday of Sukkot, which follows only several days later. The emotional intensity and seriousness which characterizes the Ten Days of Awe encompassing Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur gives way to the days of joy that are to be experienced on the holiday of Sukkot. This holiday, which is experienced by eating in huts and waving several arboreal species, is quite distinct and moves us in a way to experience the outdoors. This entire season is concluded a week later from the beginning of Sukkot with the twin holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simhat Torah. These are a lot of holidays! This large amount of holidays can be draining in a number of ways, not the least of which is one’s weekly activities, including exercise, work, and social life. The month on the Jewish calendar that follows is
Marheshvan (or Marahshevan). Like other months in the Jewish calendar, it is not Hebrew, but Babylonian. However, this month’s name derives from two separate words influenced by Akkadian, which translates to “Eighth Month”, making sense since it is the eighth month on the Hebrew calendar. (In Hebrew, the month is Yerah Shemini, which gets transformed to Marah Shaman and then, from there, to Marheshvan.) (It is also worth noting that the eighth month of the Jewish calendar typically begins in October, which literally means eighth month on the Gregorian calendar. It got moved to being the tenth month due to the insertion of the months named after Roman emperors, July and August.) However, there are Jews who have understood the month’s name as a different duo of words: Mar Heshvan. Understanding Heshvan as the month’s proper

name and Mar, which means “bitter”, as a descriptor, they understand Rabbi Drew Kaplan this month to be a bitter one on account of there being no special calendrical days, let alone any holidays. This lacuna appears in stark contradistinction to the copiousness of the holidays of the previous month, Tishri. For these people, they lament the seeming emptiness of special days on the calendar. But, after the barrage of our special fall season, it is a welcome respite to return to the normal flow of the year and I am happy to call it simply Marheshvan, “The Eighth Month”, an indicator that our year is back in its regular flow.
Rabbi Drew Kaplan is the Rabbi & Director for SoCal Jewish Student Services and serves as the Rabbi for Long Beach Hillel.

When you think of martial arts, do you think of fighting? If so, step away from that late-night cable TV movie and find out how martial arts training can be beneficial, especially to children. It has been found that children who get involved in martial arts reap many benefits in several different ways. • Martial arts training builds confidence and self-esteem. • Martial arts training stresses self-discipline, respect, concentration and courtesy. • Martial Arts is ideal for children who may not enjoy team sports • Martial arts training is statistically safer than most school sports. • Children with special needs, such as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), learning difficulties and hyperactivity are often recommended to participate in martial arts because of the clear benefits in its structured training techniques. If your child can benefit from a higher level of physical fitness, self-discipline and self-confidence, martial arts training may be an ideal solution. The Alpert JCC offers a wide variety of martial arts classes, including our newest offering – Jiu Jitsu. Feel free to discuss your child’s needs with Sensei Mac and identify the program that will be most beneficial to your child.

Improvising On Stage & In Life Viola Spolin, the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants, is frequently referred to as the American Grandmother of Improv. Her improvisational acting exercises shaped modern improvisational theater. These exercises are now more commonly known as theater games. These rehearsal room and workshop activities have evolved into an independent art form that is now performed before live audiences all over the world.
Kabbalah at the Alpert JCC When non-Jews ask about Judaism, they frequently ask questions like, “Do you believe in heaven and hell? In angels or the devil? What happens to the soul after death?” The answers to these questions define most religions. The areas of Jewish thought that most extensively deals with these issues, Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism, were traditionally not even taught to people until the age of 40, when it was assumed that they had completed their education in Torah and Talmud. Mysticism and mystical experiences have been a part of Judaism since the earliest days. The Torah contains many stories of mystical experiences. And the Talmud contains vague hints of a mystical school of thought that was taught only to the most advanced students and was not committed to writing. During the Middle Ages, many of these teachings were finally committed to books, such as the Zohar.
She influenced the first generation of improvisational actors at the Second City in Chicago in the late 1950s, through her son, Paul Sills, who was one of Second City’s co-founders. Well-known Second City alums include Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, Eugene Levy, Steve Carrell, Chris Farley, Dan Akroyd and John Belushi.
The Jewish mystical school of thought has come to be known as Kabbalah, usually translated as “tradition.” But Kabbalah has come to be one of the most misunderstood parts of Judaism. These misunderstandings stem largely from the fact that the teachings of Kabbalah have been so badly distorted by so-called mystics, occultists and even modern day celebrities. And entirely too many books that purport to be about Kabbalah have little or nothing to do with the true Jewish teachings on the subject.
Many people who have studied improv have found that its rules and guiding principles can be as meaningful in life as they are on stage. Stanford University Professor Emerita Patricia Ryan Madson has written an entire book, Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up, that takes the rules of improv and illustrates their usefulness as rules for life.
Finding the right Kabbalah teacher is essential to the true study of Kabbalah. Each Wednesday at noon, Rabbi Abba Perelmuter shares his keen wit and great knowledge with those who gather for the Kabbalah class at the Alpert JCC. There is no charge for this class.

Experiencing a Taste of Israel
Jeramie Gipoor is enjoying some falafel & pita
eeeThis November, Beach Hillel gave students the chance to experience Israeli culture in their own backyard. Several Hillel students have had the opportunity to travel to Israel, whether on Birthright or with family and friends. However, for others it is a place they long to travel to. In an effort to promote visiting Israel through CSULB’s study abroad program or Birthright (registration opens February 2013), Beach Hillel created Taste of Israel, where each week a program promoting Israeli culture is introduced. Since Israel’s culture is influenced by its surroundings, it was important to brief the
students on its history and the significance of its location. During the first event, a representative from the pro-Israel campus advocacy group, Stand with Us, came to teach students how Israel’s history and location influenced its growth, food, and music. Students also learned how Israel’s location plays both a negative and positive role in political outcomes. This topic of discussion allowed students to weigh in on what they feel Israel should do in regards to the threats they face by their immediate surroundings. The next event was an actual taste of Israel. We wanted to show that there is so much more to Israeli food than falafel and pita. Students were taught that the food eaten in Israel is influenced by Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews. We gave students the chance to make dishes like spicy shakshuka, salty burekas and sweet atayef. The ultimate goal was to teach students how food truly brings people together and plays a great role in the Israeli lifestyle. The third week’s event
was based on Israel’s language. Students had a chance to learn some basic Hebrew words and phrases that are most commonly used in Israel. They also had an opportunity to learn words that they can have fun with and use with friends. These Hebrew lessons will break off into another Hebrew program for those who want to learn the language more in depth. In order to learn about sports in Israel, students had the opportunity to play in our version of the Maccabiah games. They learned how sports have the ability to bring Jews from all over the world to Israel to compete against one another in the sports arena.

F REVER
As we age, change will happen. How we respond to change will determine our well-being, both mentally and physically. Did you know that many people never think about their own views and values regarding the later phases of life until a crisis hits and that this is precisely when decision making is the most difficult? Communicating with family members, young and old, can help make the transition into our later years more positive, yet many of us are hesitant to broach these topics with our loved ones. Why do you suppose we fear these conversations? There are very few opportunities to consider such sensitive subjects in a supportive environment. The Jewish Community
President, and Ms. Wilcoxson, Advisor, are preparing the materials necessary to run our own elections. On Election Day, November 6th, the US History students and Student Council members will host mock elections for our students.
York. Francine and Evan both graduated from USC in 2004. Francine is currently working in marketing at Mattel, and Evan is a film editor. The wedding is planned for December 2012.
Foundation invites you to join us for dessert and discussion on topics related to meeting the needs of aging family members, planning for the changes that come with aging, communicating our wishes to loved ones, and the benefits and peace of mind that come with planning ahead. There is no fee for the program, but please RSVP to Yolanda Placencio at 562426-7601 EXT 1314 or yplacencio@jewishlongbeach. org to make sure we have enough materials. Christina Goldman, MSW, is the Director of Older Adult Services at JFCS, Long Beach. Christina is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and received her Masters of Social work with an emphasis in Older Adults & Families from California State University, Long Beach. All students, grades 3 and up, will experience going to our election booths and voting. It is very important in a democratic society, to teach our youth to become informed about issues and take action. Although our elections are only practice, we know
our future voters will gain a lot by experiencing the mock elections. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Ms. Deborah Wilcoxson at dwilcoxson@hacds.org or 714-898-0051.

Long-time community philanthropist, Eugene Schlesinger, died Friday, September 28. It is with great sadness that the community mourns his passing. “Eugene Schlesinger was a community giant....a voice of passion, a voice of caring, a voice of wisdom,” said Deborah Goldfarb, Jewish Federation/Jewish Community Foundation Executive Director, at the memorial service. “It’s hard to imagine a Jewish organization Eugene did not touch. Eva’s honor. As a result, at least two dozen area teachers will receive intensive training on the Holocaust yearly, which they can use to reach hundreds of students. Eugene proudly spoke regularly of his work on behalf of Holocaust remembrance with numerous other organizations
including: The US Holocaust Museum, Anti-Defamation League, Chapman University Rogers Center for Holocaust Education, and USC Shoah Foundation Institute. Eugene and Eva also established Holocaust Memorials at the Hebrew Academy and the Alpert Jewish Community Center. Eugene had an undying love for Israel and was very proud of his work as United Jewish Welfare Fund Chair during the Yom Kippur War. Eugene often related his experience as Campaign chair in 1973 when the entire community left the synagogue and converged at the Jewish Community Center in order to immediately mount a local response to the attack on Israel. As a past President (1975-
1977), Eugene felt an ongoing commitment and responsibility to the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County and their work in the community and Israel. Eva and Eugene were consistently among the top annual campaign donors throughout their time in Long Beach. “Eugene brings to mind a saying of Rabbi Hillel”, said Blutinger. “In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man.” (Pirke Avot 2:6) “Throughout his life, including, and perhaps most especially, in the Nazi camps, Eugene strove to be a man, a mensch, a decent and ethical person. He remained true to his values, to his faith, and to his community. He will be deeply missed.”
