FEATURE STORY
Opening Night, Jewish Film Festival and Celebrating 10 Years of Community Leadership By Danny Levy, Director of Development
Ziggy Gruber (r) of Kenny & Ziggy’s Deli in Houston, having a laugh with a customer, from Deli Man movie.
great way to get 5776 going: Opening Night featuring the movie Deli Man and the beginning of the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival, as well as recognizing the person with ten incredible years at the helm of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation. All such blessings in our lives. Seriously, can it get any better than watching an epic story of the humble, yet holy institution of the ‘deli’, the offering of five of the latest and greatest Jewish films to watch amongst friends, and the testament of our community to have had Deborah Goldfarb leading us for 10 years? I’d say yes to all. We are very fortunate in this community to have many ways to fulfill the mitzvahs of the Torah throughout the year. Tzedakah is a great way to start. Support the Federation’s Annual Community Campaign. The Annual Community Campaign supports the Jewish Community Partnership agencies and community synagogues, as well as provides better living for others here at home and across the globe. Annual Community Campaign supports: college students looking for Jewish identity through Hillel; sending Long Beach contingent to the U.S. Maccabi Games; tuition assistance for Jewish education to our local synagogues; seniors enjoying a weekly luncheon; a family struggling to put the pieces together after domestic violence; support for Holocaust survivors in Eastern Europe; technology education for the underserved in Israel; and much more! Do good everywhere from anywhere. Your generosity to our Annual Community Campaign helps in all these ways and so many more, so please join with community friends, old and new, in celebrating Opening Night for both the Annual Community Campaign and the Long Beach Jewish Film Festival on Wednesday, November 18, 2015. We will be showing Deli Man, preceded by a deli platter (but of course) reception sponsored by the Jewish Federation and in part by Gelson’s Market.
Honoring Deborah Goldfarb, CEO We will also recognize and whole heartily thank Deborah Goldfarb, CEO of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Community Foundation, on her 10th anniversary. Current Federation President Hank Feldman avows, “Our community has been so lucky to have enjoyed Deborah’s extraordinary leadership over the past 10 years. It just doesn’t get any better!!” Rick Freeman adds on, “As a past President of the Federation and current President of the Jewish Community Foundation, I have seen what a dedicated leader Deborah is.” Judi Lentzner also declares, “Reflecting on the accomplishments of my Federation presidency would be the hiring of Deborah”. This will be a special night for Deborah, her family, and our entire community. Opening Night Film For some, delicatessen food is close to a religious experience. A tender, crumbling cut of corned beef steeped in its juices. A full-bodied garlic dill pickle. Spicy brown mustard with grain. A blintz that melts in your mouth like a creamsicle on summer’s day. Recipes and culinary garnishes from Hungary, Poland, Russia, Romania that flowed into late 19th and early 20th century America and soon became part of an American culinary and cultural vernacular – Deli. Because the story of the American deli is the story of Jews– their immigration, migration, upward mobility, and western assimilation. New York may always be the most populous, celebrated and redolent Jewish node. But substantial and influential Jewish tides also flowed from Chicago to Detroit, San Francisco to Long Beach and Galveston to Houston and Dallas. The shadowy understory is how that very success engendered the deterioration of the old, traditional urban block and neighborhood– the epic synagogues, Mom and Pop storefronts, and nucleus of Jewish cultural life at which deli was the succulent heart. Reception (Wednesday, November 18) Reception with deli platters in the Lentzner Family Promenade and the Leon & Barbara Shoag Rotunda will begin at 6:00 pm, followed by Deli Man screening in the Amy & Richard Lipeles Family Auditorium at 7:00 pm. Tickets for Opening Night are free with a pledge to the Federation’s 2016/5776 Annual Community Campaign. In addition with a 2016 pledge, you may purchase a discounted Film Festival Pass for only $35. To RSVP, please contact events@ jewishlongbeach.org or (562) 426-7601 ext. 1417. Long Beach Jewish Film Festival The Long Beach Jewish Film Festival is cosponsored by the Alpert Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Federation, the Jewish Community Foundation, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Long Beach Hillel and CSULB Jewish Studies Program. other unique, Jewish-themed films being screened: Beneath the Helmet, Thurs, 11/19, 7:30pm Five real recruits begin their training in the Israeli Defense Forces. Their teacher is a lieutenant who is only a couple of years older than them but he has to find a way to turn high-spirited, homesick teenagers into crack paratroopers. Apples from the Desert, Sat, 11/21, 7:30pm A young Israeli woman rebels against her strict religious upbringing in this drama and runs away with a boy to a secular desert kibbutz. Her heartbroken Orthodox family responds in a way that is anything but stereotypical. Mr. Kaplan, Sun, 11/22, 10:00am They found Eichmann in Argentina, so Mr. Kaplan is sure the German café owner in Montevideo is a Nazi in hiding. But this is a Uruguayan comedy, so appearances may be deceiving. Raise the Roof, Sun, 11/22, 2:00pm The Nazis burned down 200 beautifullydecorated 18th century Polish synagogues. This uplifting documentary shows how two Boston artists, who are neither Jewish nor Polish but love restoring old buildings, recruited hundreds of craftsmen, students, and volunteers to return one of them to its previous splendor. Cary Wolinsky, who co- wrote/produced the film will speak afterwards about the making of Raise the Roof. Long Beach Jewish Film Festival individual tickets or the Film Festival Pass will be available at the P.E. desk at the AJCC or at registration on Opening Night. Rewarding Philanthropists with Tax Benefits* By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development
Year End Charitable Planning Begins NowAdvantages of a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund The High Holy Days are over and with Thanksgiving and Chanukah approaching quickly, now is the best time to think about the best strategies for your year-end charitable giving. By opening a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund (DAPF) at the Jewish Community Foundation before December 31st, you will still be able to receive a charitable tax-deduction for this year. A DAPF allows you the flexibility of opening the fund in one year and then using this fund to recommend distributions to any IRS approved nonprofit organization when it is convenient for you. If you write multiple checks to several nonprofit organizations over the course of a year, then a DAPF allows you to centralize your charitable dollars into one account. When you open the fund, The Jewish Community Foundation will do the rest of the work. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about these Funds. How Do I Open a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund (DAPF)? Your personal DAPF is established by making a minimum contribution of $2,000.00 in cash or securities to the Jewish Community Foundation. Any additional
How often will I receive statements? Each time you make a deposit into your DAPF, you will receive a receipt from the Foundation. The Foundation maintains all financial records and will credit all contributions and deduct all distributions from the fund. You will receive a statement every month that shows the activity in your account. At the end of each year, you will be provided with a full transaction history of your fund.
Ben Kaplan (r) was the past recipient of a Bob Baldwin Memorial Fund grant, where he was given an opportunity to travel to Israel and learn about Jewish traditions.
contribution amounts can be made at any time and will also be tax deductible. A balance of $1,000 is needed to keep the fund open. Many donors choose to fund their DAPF with long-term appreciated securities. By donating appreciated stock held for more than one year to a DAPF, donors can avoid or reduce capital gains taxes. What is the Process for Distributing the Funds? The DAPF is the property of the Jewish Community Foundation, but you maintain executive privileges of providing recommendations of how the distributions of gifts is applied to qualified charitable organizations on your schedule. Once a deposit
is made to the fund, there is a 90 day waiting period before a distribution can be made. Since the Foundation does not charge any fees for DAPF’s, the 90 day period allows the Foundation to accumulate some investment earnings. All the investment earnings are pooled into the Foundation’s General Unrestricted Fund which is used to make grants to local agencies and synagogues, provide scholarship funds such as The Bob Baldwin Memorial Fund (see below graph), and support the donor services provided by the Foundation. Distributions are made twice a month and you can mail, e-mail, or fax over the distribution forms. The Foundation checks each distribution to assure that it goes only to IRS sanctioned
charities. The Foundation writes and mails the check in the name of your fund. A DAPF may only be used to make donations and no goods or services may be received. The minimum request for a distribution is $50. How will I know that my charity has received my distribution? A letter from the Foundation accompanies each check distributed. The letter includes the name of the DAPF holder who recommended the distribution. The charity is asked to send the fund holder a receipt of acknowledgment. The letter also states that the gift may not be applied to pay for goods or services or applied to any outstanding obligations.
The Jewish Community Foundation staff is here to answer questions and help you understand all your options. Through our free Personalized Donor Services, we are available to work with you and your advisors to help you meet your charitable goals. For more information please call Sharon Kenigsberg at the Jewish Community Foundation, (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008 or e-mail sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org.
*Please note: The information provided in this article is general and educational in nature. It should not be construed as legal or tax advice. The Jewish Community Foundation recommends that each donor consult their own legal or financial professional regarding their unique tax situation.

The Jewish Roots of Thanksgiving By Rabbi Mark B. Goldfarb
I was once asked, “Do Jews celebrate Thanksgiving?” I remember being totally confounded and Rabbi Mark greatly puzzled Goldfarb by the question. “Why wouldn’t American Jews celebrate Thanksgiving?” I responded. “Because Thanksgiving is not a biblical nor a Jewish holiday,” came the response. In truth, what the holiday of Thanksgiving celebrates is inherently Jewish gratitude to the Creator for the fall harvest. In Judaism, there is a name for celebrating that fall harvest, it’s called Sukkot! And that’s just the beginning of the Jewish roots to Thanksgiving. Before we begin, a note of introduction. I used to adhere to the belief that life was a series of serendipitous events, happenings and discoveries that occurred by chance or accidents. My work as a Rabbi and a chaplain in hospitals, prisons, senior living facilities and hospice, put that notion to rest. On too many occasions, I found myself just where I
needed to be - thinking I got there through a series of random choices. I do not try to solve the mystery of how it all came to be that I found myself in the right place at the right time; I simply marveled at the mystery. Surely, this has happened to you, where you meet someone randomly who happens to share a mutual friend or even lives near you. When those encounters happen, somewhere in the grand scheme of things, there’s a mind that thinks, “Just as I had hoped.” One of the Hebrew words for “giving thanks” is הֹודּוhodu, as in Psalm 118: Give thanks to Adonai, for God is good…” (Hodu Ladonai ki tov). This Psalm is familiar to us from the Passover Seder and from the holiday of Sukkot, the origins of the holiday of Thanksgiving. Furthermore, using Gematria, the Hebrew letter-numerical system, the Hebrew word הֹודּו has the numerical value of 21. Interestingly, the Hebrew word for turkey, הֹודֹו, hodo, also has the numerical value of 21. Therefore, in Hebrew, “giving thanks” and “turkey” are deeply connected one with other.
No surprise to us American Jews, we’ve been celebrating Thanksgiving with turkey for generations! But wait, there’s more... If you add the values of the year in which the United States was formed, 1776, you get a total of 21. This number 21 has many more links to Judaism and Thanksgiving. The 21st state to be admitted into the Union of the United States of America was the State of Illinois. The first President of the United States to come from the Great State of Illinois was Abraham Lincoln. President Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of our country and the President who made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. And then there’s this connection: According to the “turkey farmers of Canada,” yes, there really is such an organization, the average Israeli consumes 21 pounds of turkey a year. And finally, there’s this deep, mystical connection. During my first year of Rabbinic studies at the Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion, I, along with all the Rabbinic, Cantorial, Educational, and
Non-Profit studies students, lived in Israel. All of us, with the College-Institutes help, had to find an apartment to rent in Jerusalem and immersed ourselves in Israeli life and culture. Of all the apartment complexes and rentals that were available, Deb and I rented a place called Rachov Avraham Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln Street. הֹודּו, hodu. הֹודֹו, hodo. Thanksgiving. Turkey. The number 21. President Abraham Lincoln. Israel and Israelis. Abraham Lincoln Street. Coincidence? I think not. This Thanksgiving holiday, think about reconnecting Thanksgiving with its Jewish roots. Perhaps you might begin the meal with the lighting of candles. You could recite a kiddish and shehechiyanu over a glass of wine. You could make/buy a challah and recite the motzi blessing. And, at the end of your meal, “when you a full and satisfied, thank God for the good land given to you.”

Adopt A Family Program As the holiday season approaches, thoughts turn to festive meals and presents, but not all in our community have the means to celebrate by providing gifts and food for their families. That’s why Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) steps in to assist. JFCS invites all who have the means and desire to give to participate in its Adopt a Family program.
This program has gained the status of a tradition at JFCS, and with the help of several energetic board members and many generous people, plans are already being made. Gail Levy, Nancy Linden, and Gael Libby from the JFCS Board are at the helm, and groups such as the Alpert JCC Early Childhood Education program and Jewish Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy have
already committed to adopt families in need. “Last year, we were able to have 14 families adopted for a total of 42 individuals. We are hoping that we can increase the number of people we help during the holiday season,” said JFCS Executive Director Kathryn Miles. JFCS identifies the families in need, of whom many are clients of the agency, and they share
information about a particular family with the volunteer groups such as Jewish Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy, as well as individuals who want to be donors. “We provide details of the gender and ages of all members of the family, and we try to match a family to the wishes and capacity of the group who is donating gifts. It’s not a perfect science, because we can’t predict how
many families are in need, nor can we identify how many individuals and groups want to help. But in the end, it is so worthwhile to see the joy in the faces of everyone in the family when they arrive to pick up their gifts,” added Miles. For more information on how you can become involved as a donor, call Pattie Davidson at (562) 427-7916 ext. 235.

Empowering Local Rising Student Leaders Beach Hillel has a student internship program that provides an opportunity for students to gain leadership skills, work with others, and create programming events. When Jewish students leave home for college, it becomes difficult for students to continue their religious practices. Beach Hillel is a home away from home for many Jewish students on campus; it is a place where they can socialize with other Jewish students and carry
on the traditions they practiced growing up. Our internship program creates an experience for students with a Jewish twist, by letting them hold responsibility in the organization and engage with the broader Long Beach Jewish community. One of the main goals of Hillel is to connect students to the Long Beach Jewish community outside of campus, which further enriches their Jewish experience during their time in college.
We do this by setting up each intern with a community leader who provides guidance and mentorship, giving them tools to grow as Jewish leaders. Beach Hillel’s new social media intern Eliza Naimi is a sophomore at CSULB. “This is my first year as an intern and I love it because it’s gotten me involved with the Beach Hillel community and I’ve met so many other students on campus. I’ve already started to become more comfortable expressing my Jewish identity on campus and the support from my mentor and the Jewish community is really helpful too”. Beach Hillel trains the future Jewish leaders of our community by giving them skills to help them build meaningful connections and relationships. Cultivating Preschool Students’ Roots & Natural Intelligence
Thanks to the melding of the gardening expertise of Mr. Steven Berger (volunteer botany expert) and the educational knowledge of Mrs. Chanie Perelmuter (Early Childhood Center Director), the Hebrew Academy Early Childhood Education (ECE) students
have gained great skills and experience by planting fruit trees and establishing a vegetable garden on the grounds of the preschool. Mr. Berger suggested the young scholars first plant a fig and pomegranate tree in to recognize two of the seven species of trees found in Israel.
The ECE teachers were then able to use the gardening experience to teach about Tu B’Shvat, which is the Jewish New Year for trees. The objectives were to plant trees on the holiday to recognize its significance and give the school children the hands-on experience of the planting trees. Each child experienced tossing a trowel-full of mulch onto the ground next to the newly planted trees while Mr. Berger taught them about the importance of fertile soil for plants. Such a unique learning experience allows the students to attain a personal touch with their Jewish cultural roots, while also improving the environment. With his 35 years of growing fruit trees and his involvement in the California Rare Fruit Growers, acquiring the trees and teaching the students about their importance and needs was not a problem for Mr. Berger. As the wife of Rabbi Perelmuter, of Shul by the Shore located in Long Beach, as well as a well-read and educated school director, Mrs. Perelmuter also brings a great expertise to the children of the ECE. Mrs. Perelmuter guides her teachers to develop outstanding lessons based on the in-depth assessments they conduct on each child’s skills, strengths, potential capacities, and challenges. By having such an intimate understanding of the students, Mrs. Perelmuter is able to connect real-world learning as offered by Mr. Berger to the standards-based education offered in her pre-school. For further information related to The Hebrew Academy ECE Program please contact Mrs. Perelmuter at cperelmuter@hacds.org.
