FEATURE STORY
Mourning the Loss of Two Jewish Communal Professionals Professor Jerry B. Bubis was Long Beach JCC Executive Director from 1960-1967. He pioneered and shaped the field of Jewish communal service and was a passionate champion of a progressive Israel. Bubis passed away on Friday, August 21, 2015, at his Los Angeles home. Bubis was the Founding Director of the School of Jewish Communal Service (now the Zelikow School of Jewish Nonprofit Management) at Hebrew Union College’s Los Angeles campus. He was the first to conceptualize, initiate, establish and sustain a program for the education and formation of professionals who would serve the totality of the Jewish community. He served as the Alfred Gottschalk Professor Emeritus of Jewish Communal Studies. His teaching and mentorship of generations of students created the field of Jewish Communal Service, while his leadership, publications, and guidance shaped and will continue to shape the Jewish nonprofit world he loved so much and served with distinction. Professor Bubis was a visiting scholar at Hebrew University, Brandeis University, American Jewish University, UCLA, and Haifa University. He was also a consultant, trainer and lecturer for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in Israel, Europe and Argentina, and served as

On Sunday, September 13, 2015 Diane Lynn Johnson succumbed to complications of pneumonia in Los Angeles, CA. Originally from Oklahoma City, OK, Diane moved with her grandparents to California in the 1960’s. Her grandparents were a huge influence in her life and helped her discover her passion for helping seniors. After graduating from college, she quickly rose to become the director of a women’s homeless shelter in downtown Long Beach and then the YWCA in San Pedro. She found her calling as the Director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Long Beach at the Alpert Jewish Community Center in 1991 and remained there

serving the seniors and the greater Long Beach community until her death. In her role, she served thousands of seniors throughout the community with compassion and respect, and she gave them purpose. Diane recruited volunteers for not only the AJCC but Meals on Wheels, Lane Victory, Community Hospital, Senior Police Partners, Food Finders, Fire Ambassadors, and many local shelters. She also served as an Elder Abuse Prevention Team board member, Older Adult Transportation Task Force founder and chair, and a member of Mayor Beverly O’Neill’s Senior Advisory Commission. Her life was about being of service and helping those in need. She did this work up until the very end of her life.
Johnson, Cheri Chartrand, and Theresa Gonzales as well as her grandchildren, Dylan and James Chartrand, Madison Johnson, and Lindsey Gonzales. She is also survived by her beloved dog Maggie May and her grand-dogs Nina and Bailey.
May his memory be a blessing.
A celebration of life was held at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on Sunday, September 27, 2015. Donations in her honor can be made to Meals on Wheels in Long Beach, PO Box 15688, Long Beach, CA 90815. Please note her name on the payment.
Diane was a valued staff person at the AJCC. There was not a single community event that she did not participate in, including the Chanukah and Purim Events, Outreach for Seniors during the holidays, our Annual Meeting, and many volunteer recognition days. Working with Diane, one always knew that the job would not just get done, but it would be done to perfection. She will be truly missed not just for her commitment to volunteer programs but for the wonderful and caring person she was. As a mother and grandmother, she was a shining example of unconditional love and support. If any of her children or grandchildren ever needed her, she was there with open arms and a helping hand. She is survived by her daughter, Megan Donaldson, and stepdaughters Stephanie

Focusing on Funds with a Purpose By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments and Community Development
One day, while walking along the road, Honi saw a man planting a carob tree and said to him,“Since a carob tree does not bear fruit for seventy years, are you certain of living so long as to eat the fruit of the tree you are planting?” The man replied, “I found the world provided with carob trees because my ancestors planted them for me. I am planting them now for my children.” Taanit 23a The quote above describes the essence of the work of the Jewish Community Foundation, which is to “Ensure the Future.” In the last issue of the Chronicle you read about the grant distributions made to several community projects from the Foundation’s unrestricted funds. In addition to those grants, there are monies distributed each year from Named Endowment and Family Funds. The characteristics of these funds are that they are established through an initial contribution of a minimum of $10,000 (corpus). Additional contributions, of any amount, may be made to these funds by any donor. The contributions can be made with a gift of cash, appreciated assets, or as a bequest, your will or trust. The Foundation invests the corpus in accordance with
its investment guidelines. The Funds receive a yearly distribution in accordance with payout guidelines of the Foundation and this yearly payout is distributed based on the donor’s wishes set forth in their Fund Agreement. The most recent fund of this type to be established is the Rabbi Howard Laibson Campership Fund. Numerous donors contributed to the fund which was started in honor of Rabbi Laibson’s retirement this past June. The fund will provide grants for campers who wish to attend camps run by the Union for Reform Judaism. In the case of Family Funds, a process is set up to involve family members in the decision making each year on the distribution of the funds. Some fund holders establish funds for a particular agency or organization, to endow their annual campaign gift, or for a specific population or field of interest. There are many possibilities for helping to “Ensure the Future.” The sidebar on this page lists some examples of Foundation Funds that community members can contribute to. If you would like more information on how to contribute to one of the already established funds or to open a new Fund, please call Sharon Kenigsberg at (562) 426-7601 ext. 1008.

Going Past the Goal Line
R E F L E C T I O N S
By Rabbi Drew Kaplan
With the conclusion of one of our most festive holidays and the crescendo into a holiday Rabbi Drew known for its Kaplan rejoicing, this October can seem like we’re just limping our way over the goal line. With a September chock full of the High Holidays and Sukkot tailing on its heels, there are a lot of preparations in order to make way for them. While in Sukkot, which begins at the end of last month and continues through the beginning of this month, there are still more preparations, energy devoted to and spent on this holiday. With all of these happenings, it can be expected to end up worn out
when it comes to the finale: Shemini Atzeret and Simhat Torah. Personally, Shemini Atzeret is enjoyable as they mark not only the conclusion to this exhausting season of holidays, but also because they are simply holidays to enjoy. Then taking it up a notch, Simhat Torah takes our celebration to the next level, featuring the celebration of our finishing of the annual reading of the five books of Moses in the Torah scroll, along with much food, drink, dancing, and other revelry. Following these days of celebration, I know I experience a certain loss of a rhythm, a rhythm that is irregular in its essence. This anomalous rhythm of only a few days of non-holidays punctuated by
festivals, in truth, only lasts a few weeks, but it’s enough to upset one’s expectations of normality. In the initial recalibrating of one’s schedule, the attendant awkwardness that ensues is somewhat unsettling, yet it inevitably gives way to a new normal. This new normal is precisely that: normal. This is no mere “offseason” between Simhat Torah and Passover, with breaks for Hanukah and Purim. Rather, it’s back to regular Jewish living and Jewish life after the holiday season. There is no official kick-off to this “return to normal”, no special day on the calendar to commemorate it, nor any rituals for it. However, perhaps Simhat Torah can serve as a final farewell party to this holiday season, with the ensuing night and day serving
as a kick-off to the regular year. Of course, there might be a holiday hangover, of sorts, holding one back from feeling fully engaged in the new normality setting in, yet, given a week or two, the return to reality can more easily be experienced. This new ensconcing with the return to normally functioning Jewish life should be back in full by the end of this month. L’chaim! All the Best, Rabbi Drew Rabbi Drew Kaplan is currently the rabbi for SoCal Jewish Young Adult Enrichment and SoCal Jewish Student Services; in the latter capacity, he serves as the rabbi for Beach Hillel. Rabbi Drew is a member of the International Rabbinic Fellowship, the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, and the Interfaith Foundation at UC Irvine.

JEWISH LIFE & CULTURE
Message from the Executive Director
Shlomit Jackson, sjackson@alpertjcc.org • (562) 426-7601, ext. 1067
The beginning of a new Jewish year always makes me take some time to reflect on the year that just passed as well as to contemplate the year to come. In every year there are transitions and unexpected events, and this year was no exception. What also is no exception is that our truly remarkable, dedicated, passionate staff works tirelessly every day to ensure that the Alpert JCC continues to provide an exceptional experience for all of our members and guests. It is with the hard work from all of our departments from marketing, maintenance, and accounting, to all of program departments, that the J has accomplished so much this past year. Here are just a few examples:
Challah Demonstration in the Sukkah
Thursday, October 1, 1:30pm
Learn how to make Challah with Kedma Cantor, who currently works in the AJCC ECE Department and is married to Rabbi David Cantor of Temple Beth Shalom. Kedma enjoys making challah and experimenting. She recently experimented with her recipe, and four unique challahs were the result: lemonade, Mexican chocolate, apple, and Mounds. Needless to say, they were very popular! This free class will be a demonstration and tasting only (not make your own). Contact Shlomit Jackson for info. sjackson@alpertjcc.org, (562) 426-7601, ext. 1067
• Our membership hit another all-time high—this time at 2,365 membership units—which represents over 6,000 individuals. • Our ECE was voted #1 in Long Beach—a well-deserved recognition. • Our Summer Programs Evaluation Task Force and professional staff implemented many changes in our camp program, from infusing more Hebrew and Jewish content to changing the unit structure and implementing aspirational arcs, as well as completely changing the ambiance of the building. These changes led to amazing increases in our 5-day camp program and to an incredible summer. • The Purim Carnival was bigger and better than ever, and hundreds of people attended our Magical Chanukah Happening. • More seniors than ever are participating in our Senior Lunches, Silver Sneaker Fitness programs, special events, and outings. • We increased the security presence at the J—not because there was a specific need—but because we want to ensure we have a safe and secure environment for all our members and guests. • For the first-time, we have a full-time Jewish educator to create synergy with all the departments, create programs, educate our staff, and continue to enhance Jewish life at the J. • And the list goes on and on. Thank you for making this past year at the J an incredibly special one. We continue to be honored to have the opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s lives, an impact that in turn makes our entire community a better place to live. The only thing more exciting than thinking about all the successes we had this past year is dreaming about what we can do next to continue making the Alpert JCC Your Center For Life!

Parent/Child Participation Classes at the AJCC
The Alpert JCC and Pete Davis believe there are many benefits to participating in youth basketball leagues. Below is a list of their favorites.
Three different classes; find the right one for you and your baby or toddler!
With child obesity at all-time highs in our country, competitive sports like basketball can be a huge step towards keeping youth and teens fit, active, and healthy! Participating on a team offers youth the opportunity to achieve better physical fitness.
Friends, fun, and learning for families with children from birth through toddler, in a welcoming Jewish atmosphere.

1. Physical Fitness
2. Teamwork
The game of basketball helps everyone learn to work together towards a common goal. Some players begin to take on leadership roles, while others may gravitate towards more supportive roles. The skills learned on the court can help children build confidence and become better team players with their classmates, friends, and families.
3. Goal Setting
Athletic competition creates opportunities to learn about setting and reaching goals. Whether it be to block a shot, get an assist, improve on defense, or win a game, competitive play provides a place for players to work towards achieving personal and team goals.
4. Sportsmanship
Players learn to encourage, acknowledge, and respect other players for a job well done. As players develop a love for basketball, they also learn to enjoy the process of playing the game rather than focusing on the outcome of winning or losing.
5. Friendship
Participants in basketball programs almost always develop friendships with some teammates. This happens naturally, since all players have a shared interest and experience similar challenges. Along with friendships, team sports is a great way to build camaraderie among kids with similar or different backgrounds. These are just a few of the benefits that have been observed from participating in youth basketball leagues. The AJCC/Pete Davis Youth Basketball League kicks off its Fall Season Sunday, October 11, with a player evaluation and placement day which is a requirement for all new and returning league players. Evaluation and games will be played at the best indoor basketball facility in Long Beach, the Alpert JCC gym. For more information see ad above this article.

Creative Thinking Helps Create A Legacy Kathryn Miles
Executive Director, Jewish Family & Children’s Service
There are many ways to leave a lasting impact on a favorite cause or organization, and with careful and creative planning, donors can benefit immediately from making such a commitment. One choice is a
life insurance policy naming the organization as the beneficiary. Binnie and Jack Berro, longtime donors to many local charitable organizations including the Alpert Jewish Community Center, Temple Israel, and California Conference for Equality & Justice, to name a few, have for many years been stalwart supporters of JFCS and generously give to the agency for a variety of programs and
needs. Binnie and Jack have chosen to use life insurance as their preferred instrument to support JFCS in the future, but with a twist. JFCS pays the premium on the policy each year, and the Berros make a donation designated to cover the cost of the premium. This provides an immediate tax deduction for the Berros and allows them to plan for their support of JFCS as part of their legacy.
If you believe that counseling, case management for seniors, domestic violence education and prevention, and other support services should be accessible to the Long Beach community regardless of one’s ethnicity, religion, disability, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation and would like to consider a gift to JFCS as part of your philanthropic vision, please contact us at (562) 427-
7916 or the Jewish Community Foundation at (562) 426-7601. In closing, I’d like to share one of Binnie and Jack’s favorite thoughts that eloquently reflects their personal philosophy of philanthropy: “What I spent is gone, What I kept is lost, But what I gave away, What I gave away will be mine forever.”
Café Europa Gathering
Ruth Rudis explains the craft project to Piri Feinhandler
JFCS Older Adult Services Program hosted Café Europa, an annual gathering of local Holocaust survivors. The program
provides an opportunity for Holocaust survivors, their families, and their caregivers to share a delicious luncheon and lively conversation with each other. Organized by JFCS, Café Europa is partially funded by The Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, an organization whose mission is to ensure the lifelong well-being of Holocaust survivors and thus secure a small measure of justice for victims of Nazi persecution.

Israel Programming
Hillel Israel Fellow Shelly Korenboim, is hosting a new
set of Israel programs this year! Every week, she shares a piece of Israel with our students during our programs Israel Peace of Cake and Hebrew Happy Hour. Born and raised in Israel, Shelly plans these events for students to give them an opportunity to engage with each other, ask questions, and gain interest while learning about Israeli culture, politics, and society. Having an Israel Fellow on staff at Beach Hillel has given us the opportunity to grow as an organization. Shelly is able to add her expertise
and knowledge by creating innovative programs that engage students. By sharing her personal experiences of growing up in Israel, students are able to feel more closely connected to the Jewish homeland. Shelly is also able to provide information about Birthright trips and internship opportunities in Israel which may not have been as easily accessible to students. Beach Hillel is so lucky to have the community support that makes having an Israel Fellow a possibility and has helped our Israel programming flourish.
Sukkot Hop This year, Beach Hillel put on our annual Sukkah Hop, an event that brings students together with members of the Long Beach Jewish community for the festive holiday of Sukkot. The Sukkah Hop is our annual program where community members open up their home and as a group, students go from one home to the next. At each sukkah, students enjoy snacks, learn songs, and socialize with each other. This year Beach Hillel partnered with Orange County Hillel and invited students from Cal State Fullerton and UCI to join us on our Sukkah Hop. According to Beach Hillel student Kelsey Kimmes, “the Sukkah Hop was really fun because normally when you go to a sukkah you’re with family, but with the Sukkah Hop I got to be with friends. It’s the perfect way to spend Sukkot as a college student because we merged with students from other campuses and travelled with them from sukkah to sukkah, which was a great way to meet people and make new friends. It’s actually how I met Tali, another Cal State Long Beach student, who is now one of my best Jewish friends. It’s a good way for young college students
COMMUNITY
to spend the holiday of Sukkot together in a fun, hip, new, fresh way- it’s like a big Jewish party!” Thanks to our generous community members, this year we were able to visit multiple
sukkahs and say the blessings over the lulav and etrog under the stars. Many students say that our Sukkah Hop is one of their favorite Beach Hillel events of the year!
NCJW: Pastry & Politics Event Susan Patterson will be the guest speaker. Susan is the author of How You Can Fight Human Trafficking “Over 50 Ways to Join the Fight.” There will be a presentation of the film “Tricked” which will be 75 minutes long. Following the film
Susan will talk about the film and her book. This event will be held on Tuesday, October 20, at the Alpert Jewish Community Center on the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus at 6:30 pm.

State of the School 2015 Dedication to educating every student is what you find at The Hebrew Academy (H. A.). We introduced our first Student Success Center – founded by Dr. Hilary Buff, establishing a place and system to offer gifted/talented students extra services they will need to reach their full potential. Tutoring, counseling, academic assessment, parent education, and occupational/ speech therapy are offered. Encouraging intellectual, emotional, spiritual and ethical growth is what students experience. We offer learning challenges during Town Hall meetings that stretch students’ courage, minds, empathy and pride. These town Hall meetings occur twice a month, in which the entire student body comes together to discuss academic successes, challenges and opportunities. Principal Dr. Carlson offered various learning exercises that allow students a rare moment to use their creativity. The H. A. instills in our students a sense of self-worth and commitment to learning Judaism. Imagine a place where children have an opportunity to play and work in an environment where it’s cool for boys to wear yarmulkes and girls to dress modestly. At The H. A. last year, a variety of classes and opportunities were offered to
students and families to gain a deeper understanding and commitment to their Jewish heritage and community. Students learned logical thinking, Hebrew reading and Jewish traditions through welldeveloped Judaic curriculum. All teachers are credentialed in their subject areas, and 83% of teachers and administrators hold Masters’ degrees or higher. Teachers have earned recognition from national or local educational organizations: Principal Dr. Carlson was named a member of the American Business Women’s Association, Ms.
Schneider was invited by Edutopia (with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) to offer a perpetual Blog, Ms. Lydon was nominated to present at the National History Society’s Annual Conference being held at UCLA, and Morah Rabin was honored for her ability to get such beautiful writing from her students. Both General and Judaic teachers were even honored by the Buck Institute for their ability to expertly integrate Projectbased Learning seamlessly into the curriculum. In June 2015, our 12th grade graduates were outstanding
representatives of The Hebrew artistic sessions, The H. A. Academy in both education offers the utmost highest quality and community. education to our students.
