Our Global Jewish Community
By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments and Community Development
O
n Rosh Hashanah, as we sit down with our family and friends to wish each other a sweet New Year, there are members of our extended family not present at the table, but who depend on our global Jewish community each and every day. For example, in the heart of Odessa, an elderly Jewish couple awaits a food package that will keep them from going hungry. A teen connects with her Jewish identity at a summer camp program. A Jewish child receives a state-of-the-art education in a new, modern classroom… Two months ago, Deborah Goldfarb, executive director of the Jewish Federation and Hank Feldman, Federation annual campaign chair went to Odessa to see first-hand how Federation dollars impact these lives and others during The Jewish Federations of North America’s Campaign Chairs and Directors (CCD) Mission. Over 100 lay leaders and professionals from 32 communities took part in the mission, which showcases programs and organizations supported by Jewish Federations and our partner agencies (Jewish Agency for Israel, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, & World ORT). The CCD Mission kicks off Jewish Federations’ Annual Campaign to care for Jews in need at home, in Israel and in more than 70 countries around the world. Annual Campaign dollars support programs that feed, clothe, shelter, counsel and rescue

people in need, and nurture and sustain the Jewish community today and for future generations. The Annual Campaign is the most trusted Jewish fundraising vehicle in the world, raising nearly $1 billion every year to provide the basic infrastructure that supports the global Jewish community. “The CCD mission creates an opportunity to serve as a witness to the work we make happen overseas, to meet those we help, to hear their stories and to appreciate the impact we make on their lives,” said National Campaign chair Susie Stern, who this year will mark her seventh CCD Mission.
“It also gives us an opportunity to better understand and appreciate the work of our overseas partners, who really do create miracles every day.” In Odessa, the group met with homebound elderly and families of at-risk children, visited schools, and summer camps which help Jewish youth reclaim their Jewish identity. Many of the youth served in the summer camp did not even know they were Jewish before attending the camp. The group toured historic synagogues and landmarks, visited the city’s Holocaust memorial and met with notable Jewish thought leaders. Odessa is just one city in over 70 countries where we all make a difference in the quality of Jewish life and there are many opportunities for us to connect to our larger Jewish family through trips and study programs for all ages. The mission then travelled to Israel, where the agenda included visits to Jewish Federation partner agency programs, and conversations with Israeli leaders about political, economic and social issues. The group also attended a TaglitBirthright Mega Event, where they interacted with 3000 young Jews from around the world whose lives have been changed by a trip to Israel. Other highlights included meetings with Israeli President Shimon Peres, Member of Knesset Shlomo Mula and Brigadier General Doron Gavish, head of the Israel Defense Forces aerial defense unit. ”I was particularly touched by meeting Yuliya, Continued on page 14

The Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach & West Orange County and the Jewish Community Danny Levy Foundation are pleased to announce the appointment of Danny Levy as the Director of Development. Danny, a So. Cal. native, is a graduate of The University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. “We are excited for Danny to join our team with his vast experience in marketing, fundraising and special events,” said Deborah Goldfarb, Executive Director. He comes to the position after having served most recently as Development Director, Western Region for B’nai B’rith International. Prior to this, he was the Development Manager at a HIV/AIDS non-profit in West Hollywood and before that Director of Marketing for a five office residential real estate firm. Danny will
be assisting with the Annual Campaign, endowment development, the Fund for Our Future and setting the general strategic direction of community-wide development and marketing activities. Danny has been passionate about the Jewish community ever since growing up at Temple B’nai Israel in Oklahoma City, OK. Danny was very involved in NFTY both locally and nationally, attending Greene Family, the Union of Reform Judaism camp in Bruceville, TX and Kutz Camp in New York. “I wouldn’t be a Jewish Communal Professional without all those years in the youth group and at camps,” explains Danny as he expresses his love for the Jewish Community. Danny currently lives in Valley Glen, in the San Fernando Valley with his ten year old son Sammy. He is very excited to be joining the Long Beach Jewish Community. Danny adds, “I look forward to working in a community so supportive of living Jewishly.”

Ensuring the Future for Congregation Shir Chadash Congregation Shir Chadash took an historic step for their congregation by opening the Congregation Shir Chadash Endowment Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation. Board president Linda Vizzini remarked, “Congregation Shir Chadash is pleased to partner with the Foundation to ensure our future. Our board and congregation have confidence in the resources and knowledge at the Foundation to help us with this endeavor.” The Foundation staff and professional investment managers have been working with the congregation
to set up the type of fund that meets their needs. The Foundation is prepared to support Shir Chadash or any organization or individual by providing professional investment management, expert advisors, personalized donor services and organizational consultations. “We are striving to maintain a vibrant Jewish community,” states Ettie Councilman, board secretary, “Congregation Shir Chadash is thankful to the Sara & Milton Kaplan Family for the generous spirit of their contribution which was used as the

basis for this endowment.” The Congregation is hopeful that others will contribute to the fund and will work with the Foundation to educate their members that bequests of all amounts are welcome and will help ensure the future. Research shows that the main reason that people do not leave money to their congregation and communal organizations is that they were not asked. People are 17 times more likely to leave a bequest when they are directly asked. The Foundation and its Create a Jewish Legacy initiative is dedicated to educating our entire community

Preemptive Turning
reflections
By Rabbi Mark Goldfarb
One of my favorite British sitcoms is entitled “Keeping Up Appearances.” In the show, Patricia Routledge plays pompous, self-serving, dictatorial Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced bouquet), obsessed with perfection and portraying the image that she is the “type of person who doesn’t associate with those types of people.” Hyacinth’s long-suffering and tolerant husband Richard (Clive Swift) is always at the receiving end of Hyacinth’s detailed and overbearing instructions, as to how to do things in just the right way, especially when Richard is driving. Hyacinth has the uncanny ability to backseat drive - from the front seat! A simple drive to visit her sister Daisy results in an endless stream of instructions from Hyacinth. “Mind the pedestrian, Richard.” Or, “mind the road, Richard.”
Or, “shouldn’t you be turning on your turn signal now?” To which Richard responds, “But the turn is 4 blocks away!” Hyacinth, never at a loss for words, would reply, “It’s never too early to let the other drivers know your plans.” Preemptive turning instructions - from a woman who never drives! This Shabbat will be the last Shabbat of the Jewish year 5772. During this Shabbat, we will read from the Torah the portion known as Nitzavim (Deut. 29:930:20). Seven times, in this portion, we encounter a form of the Hebrew word . This occurs in for turn, just 10 verses! Interesting that as we begin to prepare for Rosh Hashanah and the 10 Days of Awe, High Holy Day period, our Torah is, not so subtly, stating the ultimate theme of the coming Holy Days - to turn. Coincidence? No, I

believe there are no coincidences in life. Each occurrence wherein we are tempted to ascribe a random cause to the event is really the evidence of a greater, more sacred encounter taking place. To turn, to change directions, this is both one of our greatest attributes as well as one of our greatest challenges. It is the root of , the Hebrew word teshuvah, repentance, the ultimate goal of Yom Kippur. , For in the word repentance is turning - turning from bad habits, from outdated ideas, turning from less than positive behaviors. And here’s the real beauty, we don’t have to wait till Yom Kippur to begin , the process of repentance. We can do it now! In some congregations, all during the Hebrew month of Elul (the month that pre-
cedes the month Tishri and the holiday of Rosh HaRabbi Mark Goldfarb shanah) the shofar is sounded during the daily worship services. Like Hyacinth Bucket, the sound of the shofar and the coming holiday of Rosh Hashanah calls to us, “mind the road!” The question is, will we? May we have the strength and the courage to examine our ways. May we come to understand that we can make a change in who we are so that we might become all that we can be. May these Days of Awe, High Holy Days, be for us truly awesome days, filled with hope, with peace, and with preemptive turns. Rabbi Mark Goldfarb is Rabbi at Temple Beth Ohr in La Mirada.

PTSD and our Vets: A Personal Story of Sacrifice Every day we read reports in the papers about the number of vets returning from deployment that are suffering and trying to put their lives back together. JFCS is very proud to welcome two new interns to our clinical team, both war veterans and with firsthand experiences with PTSD, who plan to start a support group for vets this fall. The following is a very personal account from one of those interns: If I had known what a lifealtering day it was going to turn out to be, maybe I would have called sick instead of reporting for duty; but one thing I knew to be true, we were a country at war, and my commander had asked for me by name. I was deployed to the green zone, just outside of Baghdad. U.S. coalition forces had set up a clinic to treat Iraqi women and children, some of whom were casualties of war, others were just in need of proper medical attention. Two Iraqi women, as it turned out, were suicide bombers. I lost more friends that day than most people do in a lifetime.
My unit was tasked with the horrifying task of ‘bagging and tagging’ which means, looking, finding, recording and retrieving body parts. The only thing worse than ‘bagging and tagging’ was the numbing task of piecing bodies together to be sent home to their families and loved ones. Six days of this arduous task stripped me of my identity, the woman I had always been, what I held true about the world, religion and people. I was now a hollow shell, full of pain, panic, sleepless nights, rage and not exactly sure how to fit in my skin anymore. Everything I knew to be true about myself and the world had changed. The first six months after my deployment were a numb, drunk, sleepless, blur. Nothing mattered to me anymore, and unfortunately for those close to me, no one mattered anymore either. It took me at least six months to begin processing in my mind what had happened. It was more than my mind could handle so I sought psychological treatment. I was diagnosed with severe
combat related post-traumatic stress disorder. Counseling was hard and painful, often leaving me feeling vulnerable and raw. More often than not, I wanted to quit, but I knew if I stuck with it, maybe I could find myself again. After more than a year of therapy, what I found was a new normal. I will never be the person I was before my deployment, but I am certainly someone just as great. I have dealt with and let go of my anger, I have learned to trust again, I have found new truths about the world, and I have learned I am not alone. I believe there is healing in counseling, there is growth and self-discovery which is why I have gone into the counseling field. It has been over six years since my deployment to Iraq, but I have never forgotten because it is a part of me and I know it is a part of so many others. CeeJay Brown, new JFCS intern and returning Iraqi vet, is hoping to make a difference here in the lives of our returning veterans. We thank her for her generosity and courage in sharing her story.

Reflections of Israel
A New Year By Rabbi Drew Kaplan
eeHaving read assignments, written papers, and taken quizzes for classes that have started weeks prior, it can be strange for the university student to encounter the Jewish New Year. The student’s year has already taken off and he/she has gotten used to re-connecting with friends and meeting new ones, not to mention getting involved with whichever groups it may be and, oftentimes, living in a new roommate arrangement. They have just celebrated their new year of school kicking
Candice enjoying the view
eeeEvery year Beach Hillel has the privilege of sending our local college students to Israel on a Taglit-Birthright trip. At the end of this 10 day experience, we ask our students to reflect and write about one meaningful place or experience to bring back to America. We hope that you enjoy reading about the experience of Candice Lebowitz, a CSULB student, and it inspires you to get up and go to Israel yourself. The last Shabbat of the trip was amazing. We had a relaxing afternoon at the hotel, lounging by the pool and around the hotel. Some of the group had Bar and Bat mitzvah ceremonies where they were able to stand among the group to recite the prayers. We ended Shabbat with a Shabbat dinner and a choice to attend the conservative, reform, or orthodox service. I attended the reform service where there were many people from the sign language birthright group, it was a very different experience from what I was used to in a Shabbat service. We spent our last evening on Ben Yehuda Street which topped off the trip well because it was a lively place. After that, we spent the rest of the night in our hotel together. We woke up the next morning and had to bid farewell to Jerusalem and Israel. I feel so blessed to have experienced such
Friends in a Bedouin tent
a trip with people from two of the most random states in this country. I am definitely looking forward to the day I find the opportunity to return to Israel. Even more exciting is that I know people in Israel now who would welcome me with open arms, our soldiers. At the beginning of the trip, we were asked whether we feel like pilgrims or tourists in Israel. At first, I felt I was a tourist lacking knowledge about the country. After experiencing most of the trip, I felt like a pilgrim; we were warmly welcomed into Israel and at every destination we went to. The group bonded which made the experience special to me. I felt a sense of belonging in Israel despite not being able to understand when people spoke Hebrew. The money system in shekels was very confusing also, but just took adapting. There is still much to see in Israel and I hope I can complete another adventure next summer. Returning home
to the United States left a little hole in my heart and that piece was left in Israel. The country is beautiful and full of love and belonging. The soldiers in Israel were so wonderful to us that I kept in touch with a majority of them through Facebook. God bless the internet for maintaining those bridges that were built. Israel, the holy land, is supposed to be considered home; I now understand the meaning of this. My eyes are open to the opportunity to return to my homeland. This experience has changed my life in a positive way and encouraged me to see more of the world. If you would like to experience Israel for yourself, our Jewish community is planning a trip to Poland and Israel in November 2013. Please contact Sharon Kenigsberg at sharonk@jewishlongbeach.org or Susan Paletz at spaletz@ alpertjcc.org to be added to the interest list.

WOW!
Students table at Week of Welcome eeeAs the new school year begins, college campuses around the country give new and current students an opportunity to learn about ways to get involved in extracurricular campus activities. Week of Welcome (WOW) is a nationwide initiative where campus clubs, groups, and organizations set up informational tables and engage students to become members of their groups. This program allows a diverse group of students to learn about the many opportunities on campus and it gives Beach Hillel a chance to meet students from many walks of life. This September CSULB put on their own Week of Welcome. During the second week of classes, stu-
off and now it occurs that, for Jewish students, their ancestral calendar is telling them that there is another year that is beginning. It is within this framework that we at Beach Hillel seek to help students in the greater Long Beach area to consider how best to launch their new year. It is with this hope in mind that we here at Beach Hillel are looking forward to working with the young Jews on campus and providing a Jewish experience for them in their new year.
dents were given the opportunity to see what their campus had to offer. Beach Hillel participated by having their own table, handing out information pamphlets, passing out treats, and meeting with students face to face. WOW gave Beach Hillel students and staff the time to interact and speak with both Jewish and non-Jewish students about the Hillel organization. This was also an opportunity for Jewish students to exhibit their leadership skills. WOW allowed Beach Hillel to promote Shabbat Dinners, Lunch and Learns, Birthright and more. The calendar of events includes social, cultural, social actions, and Judaic programming. We hope that through WOW more students will learn about all the amazing opportunities that Beach Hillel and the other campus groups have to offer. Hopefully more students will become active in life on campus and will help to grow a more diverse Jewish identity on campus.

The AJCC Annual Appeal It’s About Doing the Right Thing The Hebrew word for charity is….well, there is none. Often, we define the word tzedakah as charity, but that isn’t quite right. Tzedakah actually means righteousness or doing the right thing. As Jews, we maintain a fundamental belief that doing the right thing will automatically cause us to act charitably toward others. And the AJCC’s Annual Appeal is an excellent opportunity for our members to practice tzedakah, or to do the right thing. Each year, the AJCC provides over $225,000 in scholarships and financial assistance. But, more importantly, we change people’s lives for the better. Over the past 5 years, our members’ generosity has enabled hundreds of children to attend our highly acclaimed preschool. Over the past 5 years, our members’ generosity has enabled hundreds of children to spend the summer learning new skills and starting life-long friendships at our summer camps. Over the past 5 years, senior adults have enjoyed a weekly lunch, an afternoon of entertainment, and a chance to laugh with friends both new and old, thanks to our members’ generosity. Over the past 5 years, hundreds of families throughout the Greater Long Beach community have had the opportunity to come together at the Alpert JCC, thanks to our members’ generosity. And, over the past 5 years, the Alpert JCC has been able to expand its vision and extend its reach as we strive to ensure the continuity of Jewish values, culture and practice through all the stages of life, all thanks to the generosity of our members. We can say “yes” to so many, because you continue to say “yes” to us. This is the time for you to once again say “yes” to the Alpert JCC. Please visit www.alpertjcc.org/donate and make a generous donation today. We – the friends you look for when you come to the AJCC, the preschooler you just saw with his mom at the pool, those inseparable new bff’s at summer camp, that family celebrating Shabbat with one of our Shabbat kits, along with the entire Alpert JCC staff and our Board of Directors – are all grateful that you continue to choose to do the right thing.

A FREE Class Especially for New Babies & Their Moms The New Year provides us all with a wonderful opportunity for reflecting upon what may lie ahead of us in the coming year. And new mothers, especially, have so many new experiences awaiting them. Both the joys and challenges faced with the arrival of a new baby are more easily faced when you are part of a supportive group. And you are invited to become a part of that supportive group every Wednesday at 9:30AM, in our free From the Beginning Parent/Child Participation class. From the Beginning is specifically geared to moms of newborn babies all the way through the time that those babies begin to walk. Facilitated by one of our experienced, professional Early Childhood Education staff members, this class will help support the transitioning of your family when your new baby arrives, whether it’s your first child or your fourth. Early Childhood Education Director (and former From the Beginning teacher) Linda Sunshine Keiles says, “Being a new mom can sometimes feel very isolating. This class connects new moms with other new moms…women who are going through the same set of new baby issues and experiences and can really share, support and empathize with each other. And they do it all while having fun with their baby!” Contact our Early Childhood Education Director, Linda Sunshine Keiles at (562) 426-7601, ext. 1092 or lkeiles@alpertjcc.org for more information

Bringing Learning Outside
Ubiquitous Learning through Technology
eeeOur goal at the Hebrew Academy is to prepare each student to make a positive difference in the complex technological world. Therefore, our teachers are working hard this summer to review their curriculum, coordinate the general and Judaic studies and integrate a wide variety of technology in order to make learning ubiquitous – every minute of every day is dedicated to the pursuit of satisfying curiosity in an effective and motivating manner. As we know now from brain research, the more connections we can help our students make between prior and new knowledge, the more dendrites (and learning) will develop for them. With support from Innovative Educators, our teachers are further analyzing their curriculum and instruction in order to ensure exciting and core learning occurs. Often, technological solutions help us support our young scholars. Just to name a

We hire the best and offer them resources to make their jobs rewarding. Therefore, the teachers’ talents and passions are poured right into our students and their learning. Through the generosity of the many Annual Auction attendees and friends of the Hebrew Academy who donated to this project, the school was able to build a beautiful and beneficial outdoor classroom that will support many scholars for years to come. The teachers look forward to using the outdoor space for small group instruction, quiet reading and writing, videography, or even artistic ventures. More and more schools are seeing the benefits of outdoor learning and how outdoor classrooms have much to offer their pupils. Combined with outstanding instruction, based on the way children learn best, is an un-
derstanding that capitalizing on our beautiful California outdoors helps our teachers and students to develop a more naturalistic, inquirybased approach to learning. Also incorporated into this type of learning is the material used for such ventures, with environmental products and eco-friendly designs at the forefront. These types of learning areas are ideal for story times, learning about nature and how children can interact with wildlife. They are great places for children to explore their imagination, with the aid of the teacher’s instruction; the students can learn how we as humans affect the environment and what steps can be taken to appreciate the outdoors while minimizing our negative impact on nature. Come see this outdoor learning space in action. To schedule a visit, contact our Admissions Director, Alex Greenberg, at agreenberg@ hacds.org or by calling the office.
Special Scholarship Opportunity
A generous donor has offered a limited number of scholarships for new enrollees to the HA in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade. If you have always dreamed of giving your child an edu-
cation of a lifetime, please contact Alex Greenberg. Don’t miss the opportunity to come to the HA and enjoy the high quality general and Judaic education we offer.

A New Regional Director Leads ADL eeeThe AntiDefamation L e a g u e (ADL), one of the nation’s oldest and largest civil Melissa Carr rights and human relations organizations, has promoted Melissa Carr to Regional Director of the Orange County/ Long Beach office. Melissa, a long-time Long Beach
resident and leader in many parts of the Jewish community, is excited to lead the organization which she has been involved with since 1998; first as a volunteer and then most recently as director of special projects. “This is an important and vital time for ADL locally and throughout our national network of regional offices. In November, we launch a year-long celebration of
ADL’s place in civil rights history and look ahead to face challenges that continue to test communities,” says Carr. From the vantage point of the ADL regional office in Santa Ana, she knows, “Kids bullied every day, bigotry festers and sometimes thrives in communities and extremist groups and trends threaten public safety. These are top concerns for us and we have resources to face them.”

ADL provides programs for schools, teachers and students to create climates of mutual respect where diversity is nurtured rather than confronted as a challenge. Many programs are grant funded with no cost to schools. Programs help schools and their stakeholders understand bias and the harm it can cause if it goes unchecked. Programs address bullying, creating allies and action planning.

Looking ahead, Carr notes that there is much work to do. “Some would only see the potholes in the road ahead. I see the opportunity to smooth them out and make a better world. I look forward to working collaboratively with others to make it happen.” For more information on ADL see www.adl.org or call 714-953-2860.

a nine year old fifth grader at Odessa Chabad School, whose single mother, Galina, suffers from lung cancer,” said Deborah Goldfarb. Yuliya and Galina live in one
room in an old communal apartment in dire need of repair. Even worse, their monthly family income is $145. “Our trip to the grocery store with them was heartbreaking,” said Deborah. “The sad piece is that we help serve people in the Long Beach area who are in dire need as well. Until we meet people like this face to face, it is hard
to imagine how difficult their lives are.” 2013 Annual Campaign Chair Hank Feldman found the trip particularly enlightening. “Going to Eastern Europe and Israel to see how much our dollars are needed is a once in a lifetime experience,” said Hank. “I am personally committed to getting more people from our
community to go on trips like this in the future.” The 2013 Annual Campaign will kick off in November, although donations are welcome year round, and are needed to make sure we truly make a difference in sustaining Jewish life and aiding those most at risk. year, it is amazing to think that Jews everywhere-all of us- no matter what language we speak, what type of worship service we attendare one people. We often forget as we go about our day to day activities that we are all connected one to the other (in Hebrew- Kol Erevim Zeh B’Zeh). This New Year, may our entire Jewish family be at the table to celebrate a year of health and peace and may we all do what we can to make a difference in the life of another.
