Federation Impact Around the World Deborah K. Goldfarb

Chief Executive Officer, Jewish Federation Jewish Community Foundation

This month, we will pause as a Jewish Community to reflect upon the birth of our world. At the same time, while there are many global insecurity issues going on in the world, that may impact the Jewish Community, I believe it is a good time for us to think about the role of Federation. From anti-Semitism and anti-Israel activities on college campuses, to war in the Ukraine, to fears about Iran, to aiding and gathering Jews at risk from around the globe, the Federation system plays a critical role.

War in Ukraine For the first time since World War II, we are caring for Jewish refugees in Europe. Because of the terrible conditions today in Ukraine, our brothers and sisters who are caught up in this crisis have nowhere else to turn to for help. Our national Federation system has committed to raising $2.5 million to ensure that our overseas partners, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and JAFI, are able to continue their life-saving work. There are thousands of internally displaced Jewish refugees now living in various parts of Ukraine and Russia, about

ensuring that the Jewish Community is represented in these discussions. We are concerned with the danger that Iran’s nuclear program poses to the United States, Israel and the global community. It is critical, regardless of your views on the JCPOA, that we stay focused on the ultimate goal: preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. We urge our Jewish Community members to contact their representatives and make their views known on this highly critical issue. As we rejoice in our place as Jews in the world on Rosh Hashanah, we each have a responsibility to advocate on behalf of our fellow

JFNA Israel Action Network The Israel Action Network (IAN) is a strategic initiative of The Jewish Federations of North America, of which our local Greater Long Beach Federation is a member, created to counter assaults made on Israel’s legitimacy. Israel today faces an intensive and increasingly sophisticated assault on its right to exist as a sovereign democratic Jewish state. The IAN was created to educate, organize and mobilize the organized North American Jewish community to develop strategic approaches to countering these assaults and develop innovative efforts to change the conversation about Israel and achieving peace and security for two states for two peoples. IAN’s work is grounded in building strong relationships with people of faith, human rights advocates, political and civic leaders, and friends and neighbors in our communities. Here in Long Beach, our Federation’s Israel Advocacy Committee is actively working to develop strategies to address these issues as well. Aliyah of Ethiopian Falas Mura In August of 2013, Federation’s overseas partner, the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) officially announced the end of its decades-long campaign to bring Jewish Ethiopians to Israel. During the coming weeks, the Israeli Government is likely to make a decision to restart mass Aliyah (immigration) from Ethiopia in response to protests from Israeli’s of Ethiopian descent. As this happens, the programs that Federation funds in Israel to support Ethiopian immigrants, will become even more important, including youth villages, early childhood education, college scholarship assistance, and outreach to at-risk teens. The new immigrants who come, including those who were previously eligible who did not come, and up to 6,000 falas mura (descendants of Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity), will need extensive help in order to integrate into Israeli society.

2,500 of whom are living in temporary shelters. To make a donation directly to this important effort, please contact Danny Levy, Development Director at the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach. The Iranian Threat We enter this New Year with the U.S. Congress preparing to vote on a controversial nuclear agreement with Iran, a country with a history of human rights violations, support for terrorism, plus aggressive actions towards Israel, other neighboring countries, and the U.S. We urge Congress to give this accord its utmost scrutiny. The 60-day review period opens a critical window to examine the agreement and ensure that it has the rigorous inspection and compliance components that are necessary. Our national system is working behind the scenes on

Jews, worldwide. Please join me in supporting these efforts locally, nationally and internationally, by giving generously to the Federation Annual Community Campaign over the coming year. Thank you all for your efforts. L’Shanah Tovah.

Women’s Philanthropy: A Place for All Women By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development

Women’s Philanthropy of the Jewish Federation’s Annual Community Campaign is a place for women’s leadership, empowerment and philanthropy. It is a place where women come together as a community because we share a vision of tikkun olam (repairing the world), tzedakah (justice), rachamim (compassion) and chesed (loving kindness). The Women’s Philanthropy Cabinet will meet monthly to plan events, social action projects, and educational programs for all women. “The theme for Women’s Philanthropy this year will be engagement”, states Leslie Kern, Women’s Philanthropy Chair. Leslie continues, “Our goals will focus on the many ways women can utilize their time, talents and treasures for the benefit of the Jewish Community- locally and around the world. Beyond contributing to the Annual Community Campaign, we will be providing educational and social programs to engage Jewish women while also supporting our local Jewish agencies. For example, we will be forming a team to support the JFCS Race with a View in May and we will have some dinner programs prior to the CSULB Jewish Studies Lecture Series that takes place at the Federation Weinberg Campus”. VISIONS The signature event of Women’s Philanthropy is the annual Arlene Solomon VISIONS dinner; this year is the 20th anniversary of VISIONS which will be on March 31, 2016. This event, chaired by Gail Levy and Sherri Selmanson, brings together women from all over the community to celebrate the power we have as women to support the Federations Annual Community Campaign and care

for the vulnerable and rescue those in need. Each Jewish organization in our community nominates a “Woman of Vision” who is honored at the event. Heart to Heart Women’s Mission to Israel in February Nationally, Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) Women’s Philanthropy brings women all over the world together for conferences, women’s missions to Israel and opportunities to share and learn from each other. This year’s Heart-to Heart Women’s Mission to Israel will be from February 7-11, 2016 with opportunities to extend. Joyce Feldman and Arlene Freeman will be chairing this. An informational meeting on this unique trip is happening on October 14, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. Sukkot Program for Lions of Judah and Pomegranates The Lions of Judah and Pomegranate Societies are two Federation Annual Community Campaign giving societys we have to connect with each other. The first event for Lions and Pomegranates will be a Sukkot dinner at a private home on September 30. Women’s Philanthropy chair Leslie Kern remarks, “I am really excited about our plans for the year. Whether you participate in a social action project, participate in VISIONS, or become part of the Lions of Judah or Pomegranate societies, Women’s Philanthropy is a great way for women of our community to band together, make friends and make a difference”. Foundation Grants Help Strengthen Our Local Jewish Community By Sharon Kenigsberg, Director of Endowments & Community Development

Jewish Community Foundation 2015 Grant Awards Alpert JCC - “Light Up Shabbat” Program This newly designed program serves as an outreach campaign to Jewish and Interfaith families, who may not yet be affiliated with a Temple to participate in a wonderful Shabbat experience. By creating a warm and welcoming environment with a “great Jewish and Shabbat flare”, Local Synagogues and community professionals will be invited to participate. Chabad of Los Alamitos - Hebrew High-UC accredited Hebrew Language Course Rabbi Marcus’s unique after-school Hebrew program for High School students attracts teens from 16 different high schools. Through a fun and engaging “hands-on” program, the students have gone on to become Jewish leaders on their college campuses and beyond. A component of the Hebrew High program includes the opportunity for students to receive college-level language credit for their Hebrew study. This grant will help hire qualified teachers.

Shabbat programming for families, a Hebrew Language program for high school students, Israel Advocacy programs, Shabbat and holiday meals for seniors, special needs education at Torah school, and strengthening Jewish identity through hands-on Jewish Holiday Factory programs are among the range of projects receiving grants this year from the Jewish Community Foundation Unrestricted Fund (see sidebar). The role of the Foundation is to assist individuals, organizations, and various Jewish agencies in fulfilling their missions today, and for the future. The Foundation accomplishes this goal through the development and management of permanent endowment funds, lifetime gifts, bequests in wills and trusts, charitable gift annuities, donor advised funds, family funds, and donations of other appreciated assets. In addition to providing tax benefits to the donors, community member participation in the Foundation provides income to the Jewish Community

Foundation Unrestricted Fund which is available for grants. Grant applications are sent to all local Jewish agencies and organizations. The requests are reviewed by the Foundation Grants Committee and their recommendations are then approved by the Foundation Board. The goal is to strengthen our Jewish Community by providing funds for projects that: meet emergency situations; establish innovative or experimental new programs; assure provision of quality Jewish education; enhance the provision of health and social services; recruit and train volunteer and professional leadership; and establish programs which maintain and strengthen Jewish identity, commitment and continuity. “The Foundation Grants Committee is pleased to be able to give some funds to each agency/organization that applied,” said Sherri Selmanson, incoming chair of the Foundation Grants Committee. “If all of us participate in the Foundation, our funds will grow and more money will be available for

community grants. I invite everyone to learn how easy it is to open a Donor Advised Fund or leave a bequest in your will or trust so that we can continue to strengthen our entire community.” For over 40 years the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Long Beach and West Orange County has been partnering with donors and community organizations to help them meet their individual philanthropic goals, while ensuring the future of the vibrant network of programs and services provided by our communal agencies. The Foundation currently holds $18 million of assets. We offer professional investment management, a variety of Endowment Fund options, a Donor Advised Philanthropic Fund program, and pride ourselves on the ability to help each individual donor leave a personal legacy. For more information or to speak with a Foundation staff member, please call 562-426-7601

JFC - Community Israel Advocacy The Jewish Federation recently convened, on behalf of the community, an Israel Advocacy committee. The group is made up of representatives from local agencies and synagogues. After several meetings, the consensus was that education about Israel is crucial for our community to understand and advocate for Israel. This grant provided by the Foundation will help the Israel Advocacy committtee develop community wide programs for teens to provide them with information and skills they need before heading off to college campuses, as well as provides films, workshops, and speakers to engage the adults in our community around Israel. Hebrew Academy - Jewish Holiday “Factory” Programs The Hebrew Academy has for several years offered the hands-on workshops that provide positive educational experiences surrounding Jewish holidays and traditions. Their unique Shofar Factory, Matzah Bakery, Candle Dipping, and Olive Press Factories are made available to all at local synagogues and agencies and some are also held at the Hebrew Academy. This grant will allow Hebrew Academy to expand the number of factories and offer them for free or at a reduced rate, thereby allowing more Jewish children the opportunity to share in positive Jewish experiences. and strengthening their Jewish identitites. JFCS - Shabbat & Holiday Meals for Seniors Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) will receive a grant to provide four Shabbat dinners or holiday meals to Jewish seniors who are living in an assisted living facility, or other group setting, or living in individual homes without family in the area. This program grew out of a request to provide a Passover Seder for residents at a local assisted living facility. The objective of the program will be to provide Jewish seniors an opportunity to engage in religious and cultural traditions while socializing with other seniors and volunteers. Temple Israel - Special Needs Education at Torah Center Last year, Temple Israel received a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation, as well as a matching grant from the Abraham Perlman Foundation to fund a credentialed special education teacher, who worked to serve the needs of students with special needs, their parents and religious school teachers during religious school hours and beyond. With funding from our Foundation they will be able to fund this position for a second year.

CONGREGATIONS

RABBINIC REFLECTIONS Learning and Living Through Adversity By Rabbi Nancy Myers

We were camping in the Canadian Algonquin Park in July. The wind Rabbi Nancy was blowing Myers and the rain continued to fall for many hours. We were only two hours into paddling through Smoke Lake and my family and I were shivering. We didn’t come prepared. We were wearing shorts, light t-shirts, and flimsy cheap ponchos that billowed in the wind. When we hit land, everyone had to put as much as possible on to their backs along with the canoes and portage to the next lake area. My twelve year old son in the middle of an uphill climb, threw off his pack, poncho, and stood trembling with eyes wide in shock as the mosquitos swarmed his face. As he hyper ventilated, we tried to get him to slow his breaths. We all went back into our canoes as the rain continued to spray

our faces. A few minutes later, I could hear him laughing with his sister. After three more hours, we were finally at our camp site, setting up tents and changing into dry clothes. It was hard for me to see my son in such a state. I was very cold throughout the day but seeing my son like that was upsetting because there wasn’t much I could do. I could only tell him to calm down and continue to paddle so we could get to our site quicker. My brother though offered some perspective. He said, “Shane will know from this that he can get through a tough time. He knows that he made it through this day and when he encounters another difficult time, he will know that he can persevere.” I found this message comforting. I try to minimize hardships for myself and my family but sometimes, I can’t control events. There will be losses, disappointments, and times of great sadness. But perhaps enduring challenges

can equip us to deal with future hardships. There is a power in knowing that we can face painful events and that there can still be life. Even at times of loss, there can be hope that laughter will be heard again and that happiness still a possibility. Harold Kushner in his book “When Bad Things Happen to Good People”, writes: “Bad things that happen to us in our lives do not have a meaning when they happen to us. They do not happen for any good reason which would cause us to accept them willingly. But we can give them meaning. We can redeem these tragedies from senselessness by imposing a meaning on them. The question we should be asking is not “Why did this happen to me? What did I do to deserve this?” That is really an unanswerable, pointless question. A better question would be “Now that this has happened to me, what am I going to do about it?” Kusnher’s words are as true for minor challenges as

well as for painful times of loss. Given circumstances that are beyond our control, what are we going to do about it? How are we going to continue on? How are we going to appreciate the blessings that we still have in life? How can we survive today and how will we live tomorrow? I was proud that my son could continue despite the cold, wind, exhaustion, and insects. I hope he will know that he is stronger than he thinks, and will know how to continue to paddle through the tough currents of life. Shanah Tovah TikateivuMay we all be inscribed for another year of life. Rabbi Nancy Myers is the Rabbi of Temple Beth David in Westminster, CA. She received her Masters of Hebrew Letters at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and was ordained as a rabbi in New York City in 1997. Rabbi Myers currently resides in Orange County with her husband Paul Prunty and two children Gabriel (Gabri) and Shane.

In reflecting upon the High Holidays and the importance of having a Jewish Center in our community, two phrases sum up what I believe our Jewish Community Center is all about: Im Tirtzu Ein Zo Agadah, “if you will it, it is no dream,” and Ani Ve'ata Neshaneh Et Ha'olam, “you and I will change the world.” We have to dare to dream, to dream of what we can become, of what impact we can have on a person’s life and an entire community, of how we can do things differently and better, of how we can continue to grow. We would not be the J that we are without those dreams and without, then, coming together to making those dreams a reality. What we do here each and every day could not be possible without our incredible members, our caring and hardworking staff, our passionate and dedicated board members, our valuable community partners, and our generous donors and supporters. It is because of all of you, and all of our dreamers, that we have become, and will always strive to be, Your Center For Life!

What makes Kids’ University, the Alpert JCC’s popular afterschool enrichment program, so successful? It probably starts with the fact that we have trained, experienced staff on hand to work with each child. The safety and security that parents have come to expect from the AJCC is one more reason. And the fact that our buses are waiting at many Long Beach area schools when that final bell rings is certainly a plus. Supervised homework assistance means that each child is focused on what’s most important, and the enrichment classes that range from computer lab to swimming, theater arts, dance, Judaic studies and more—well, they all make up the so-called icing on the cake! Make an appointment to discuss Kids’ University with Program Director Natalie Chernik, and you’ll see just how Kids’ University is truly designed to make each and every child more successful in, and out, of the classroom.

Last Year’s RUNWAY New York Experience Winner Tells All! TICKETS NOW By Nancy Linden ON SALE What a fabulous weekend Jim and I had the most beauty of a large painting created from beginning we had in the Big Apple! And it’s all because I bought a raffle ticket at RUNWAY: The Beauty of Helping Others last September to support Jewish Family and Children’s Service, an agency which is very near and dear to my heart. Thanks to the generosity of my favorite airline, JetBlue, the glamorous W Hotel on 49th and Lexington, and, of course, the time and talent of David Carey, President of Hearst Magazines, who happens to also be a Long Beach native that graduated from our very own Millikan High School and was very much involved in B’nai B’rith Youth Organization (BBYO) during his youth,

wonderful trip to New York. We began our journey with a perfect flight out of our new, modern Long Beach airport and arrived at the beautiful W Hotel—who could ask for anything more? After dining at some terrific New York restaurants, seeing two outstanding plays, and visiting with friends and family in New York, the “piece de resistance” was our tour of the Hearst Tower in midtown Manhattan. The building is magnificent, and its history and architecture were explained to us in great detail. It is a strictly “eco-friendly” building, from the outside to every single detail of each floor inside the building. I commented on the

hanging in the lobby and was told it was all created with mud—no paint was used. David Carey, brother of RUNWAY Committee member Judy Carey-Fisher, arranged all of our tours, including our lunch and the personal meetings within the Hearst Magazines building. I want to especially give a huge thank you to David Carey for his generosity and creativity in making this “once-in-a-lifetime” experience available and for continuing to support his hometown community and ultimately, those in need. The most fun part of the tour for me was the detailed explanation of how issues of Harper’s Bazaar are

to end. We saw their “prep boards” which gave everyone who works on a piece of the magazine the feel for the upcoming magazine issue’s layout. And then….we walked into the Closet! It was awesome! The shoes alone made my heart skip a beat! If only they gave away samples?! But our gracious hosts would not let us leave empty handed. We were given goodie bags that were above and beyond, including beautiful books, make-up, cologne and much more. This was truly a trip of a lifetime and in the future I will ALWAYS buy a raffle ticket at RUNWAY to support JFCS!

Alpert Jewish Community Center on the

Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus

jfcslongbeach.org

Excitement is Growing for RUNWAY In just a few days, RUNWAY: Perspectives 2015 is set to unfold on September 10th in the Amy and Richard Lipeles Auditorium of the Weinberg Jewish Federation Campus, and judging from all of the buzz in the community, this is an event not to be missed. The evening will begin with a reception featuring TGIS Catering’s gourmet nibbles and beverages, including a signature cocktail, followed by a program that features segments on fashion, beauty, and wellness in a television talkshow format. Long Beach resident Bonnie McCarthy, a nationally-recognized design enthusiast, writer and photographer, will serve as the talk show host for the evening. A former fashion editor for Teen Magazine and California Apparel News, as well as

being a contributor to the Los Angeles Times fashion coverage, she has worked in Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo and has also been a style anthropologist. ”We are so lucky to have someone of Bonnie’s caliber and experience to serve as our host,” remarked Wendy Manasse, Chief Event Visionary. Along with her husband David Wiese, they have both underwritten the expenses of the fundraiser. The program segments are sure to delight and inspire attendees. Jennifer Cohen, a leading fitness authority, TV personality, and author of the best-selling “Strong is the New Skinny”, will share her views on health and fitness. Jennifer and Bonnie will discuss the dichotomy of fashion presented on super thin, waif-like women and the reality that “90% of us will never, can never, no

matter what we do, achieve that.” Her take is that “more women are after something else: health--and sleek toned muscles”. This segment will redefine the perfect body for today’s woman. Long Beach resident Kim VanNatta, a long-time retail guru including many years as store manager of Bloomingdale’s Fashion Island, will discuss “Fashion & Retail” with Bonnie. They will dish the inside scoop on the inner workings of a department store, fashion’s path from the magazines to the selling floor, how discounts are determined and the effect of internet sales on a store’s profitability during their discussion. Our longtime fashion designer and the Chief Visionary of RUNWAY, Wendy Manasse, will lead a segment featuring professional models who

will take “The 10 MustHaves for Your Wardrobe” and by adding today’s trending accessories, make them work for you and your life style. The clothing will be provided by Macy’s Los Cerritos Center. JFCS Executive Director Kathryn Miles will chat with Bonnie about the mission of JFCS and the positive impact of the agency on the Long Beach community and 22 surrounding cities as it provides professional, affordable counseling and support for all who need help, regardless of religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or disability. “We are so grateful for the creative and inspirational generosity of Wendy Manasse and David Wiese, who produce and underwrite the costs of this event. It is not only a major fundraiser for JFCS;

more so, it’s a fresh, new happening on a favorite topic for women, and one that our community has been looking forward to since last year,” said JFCS Executive Director Kathyrn Miles. Tickets are $40 per person in advance, $60 at the door, and are available for sale on the event website at jfcsrunway.com, or by phone at (562) 427-7916. A limited number of VIP tickets will also be available for $75, and these tickets include a swag bag and reserved seating. Sponsors for the event are welcomed, and sponsorship levels start at $250. For more information, visit the website at jfcsrunway.com. or contact Pattie Davidson at (562) 427-7916 ext. 235 for more details.

HEBREW ACADEMY

Award Winning Academics in a Genuine Jewish Environment 14401 WILLOW LANE, HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA 92647 WEB: www.hacds.org PHONE: 714-898-0051 CAMP SILVER GAN ISRAEL: www.campsgi.com

Open Doors for Your Child’s Future - Why the Hebrew Academy? Lots of schools have basic academic programs, but at The Hebrew Academy, we develop our rigorous, yet enriching, curriculum with the whole child in mind. Because of the many exchanges among all learners - students, teachers and parents, our teachers are able to make meaningful connections with their students. We know where your child is excelling, and when we can push them even further toward pursuing their passions. Students gain the ability to write strong, personal statements because their teachers have helped them know themselves as learners and leaders. We know small schools create big opportunities. Because our school is small, our students find that they're able to play a meaningful role in campus, and the wider Jewish community life. A small class size means there's always room to participate in the school enrichment academy, a sports team, or the student council. With an overall student-to-teacher ratio of just 8:1, our faculty members have the chance to build meaningful relationships with every student, guiding each individual to success in the classroom, the community, and higher education admissions.

When we choose your child for admission, we commit to developing and supporting your whole child, including both their classroom success and their emotional well-being. In that sense, The Hebrew Academy education isn't just about academics. We care about your child’s growth, both as a person and a Jew who is finding their way, and learning to adjust to a changing world. We employ a talented staff of teachers and counselors focused on the individual needs of your student. This support is especially important during adolescence, when children are faced with an incredible range of choices, including not just the kinds of people they want to hang out with - but the kind of person they want to be. Our teachers are happy, and they really enjoy teaching your child. With small classes - and a small course load - they have room to focus on building an engaging curriculum, and are involved with their communities as well. As a Jewish Day School, The Hebrew Academy offers unique curricula (such as Project-Based Learning) that offers students the chance to experience their learning hands-on, be it programming in robotics, unlocking a

Rosh Hashanah Preschool

As the Jewish community gets ready to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Hebrew Academy preschoolers are learning about the symbols and traditions of this

festive occasion. They are on their way to become Academy scholars by performing project based learning. Our little ones are busy making paper shofars, learning about honey, and creating crafts with apples – some of the symbolic elements meant to celebrate a sweet new year. At Hebrew Academy Preschool, we convey these lessons of the High Holy Days

scientific mystery using forensics in science class, writing a poem in Hebrew, or creating museum-ready art for their AP Art portfolios. Experiential learning isn't just more fun for our students; it also enhances learning by increasing understanding and retention of course material all around. The Hebrew Academy is more than a school. It's a fun community. When you enroll your child at The Hebrew Academy, you become part of a family with a similar commitment to the positive growth and development of your Jewish child. Since our first graduating class in 1982, The Hebrew Academy has sent thousands of alumni out into the world. No matter where they go, our alumni continue to play an important role in the school community. The alumni’s presence is important because, for many, the friends, teachers and administrators they met at The Hebrew Academy are like an extended family, and the school itself is like a second home. Each and every Hebrew Academy community member supports our programs, through volunteering their time, talent, expertise and philanthropic spirit. They're committed, as we are, to ensuring the

continued success of the school for future generations. We also want to mention that our campus is breathtaking. At The Hebrew Academy, our green, 11-acre campus is a living extension of the classroom. From our Value Circle to our outdoor soccer, volleyball and basketball courts, and on through our library plaza, there is always a new spot for students to study, collaborate or read. The Hebrew Academy boasts an inspiring location you really need to see to believe. Here’s an opportunity not to be missed... The Hebrew Academy is happy

to announce a special scholarship fund for kindergarten through third grade students. A local philanthropist has provided a targeted gift of helping new families send their child to Hebrew Academy. This generous donor is dedicated to helping every young Jewish scholar receive a high-quality Jewish education at our National Blue Ribbon School. Funds from this scholarship are available to new school enrollment applicants only. Please email Alex, Director of Admissions, at admissions@ hacds.org to apply or for more information.

in developmentally appropriate ways. “For our preschoolers, on Rosh Hashanah, we know that every child loves a birthday – this is the birthday of the world,” says Chanie Perelmuter, awardwinning director for the past 18 years. “We wish each other a Sweet New Year and that is why we dip apples into honey,” she explains. Children know that a birthday means sweet

things to eat and exclamations of celebration, so this is a perfect way to explain the symbolic foods and greetings of the holiday. Another common practice is to eat a pomegranate on Rosh Hashanah, as its abundant seeds symbolize our hope that we will be blessed with abundant merits. The Academy’s Israel orchard contains several pomegranate

trees, making this experience for children even more meaningful and experiential. The children really enjoy walking through our 11 acre campus to get to the fields and handpick their very own pomegranate that they can take home and enjoy with their families. It’s like a fieldtrip without leaving the campus. Our preschoolers study Hebrew and are eager to wish everyone a Shana Tovah!

Shabbat and Jewish Life on Campus Once a week, beginning at sunset, we step back from the world and enjoy each other’s company. Every Friday night, Beach Hillel comes alive with an engaging Shabbat service and a delicious home cooked kosher meal that is free to all students. The connection our students feel to their Jewish identity is fostered by the social aspect of Shabbat, through making friends and meeting other students. In the beginning of the school year, we introduce new students to each other and provide an inclusive community for them to feel a part of. Throughout the year, we witness students’ transformation into confident leaders who are engaged with the Jewish community and have made friends by

attending Shabbat every week. Every Jewish student has a reason for attending Shabbat dinners on Friday nights. Some students go because of their friends, others go for the prayers and spiritual connection they feel when Rabbi Drew delivers his words of wisdom, some go for the strong feeling of community, and others simply because Rachel makes the best dinners ever. According to student Danielle Botvin, “Shabbat dinner connects me with my religion and homeland. It’s honestly just an amazing bonding experience”. Brandon Lacy says that “the people at Beach Hillel have become my second family”. The sense of community that is felt during Shabbat is one of the most

important programs Beach Hillel does that shapes the Jewish college experience of our students. Throughout the year, we host themed Shabbats to raise awareness of social justice, spread Israeli culture, and engage students with varying interests. Jewish students know that at the end of every week, they can come to Shabbat to unwind, reconnect to their Judaism, and spend quality time with friends. Friday night is more than just the end of a hectic workweekat Beach Hillel it is a time to connect. Here is where you come in, Shabbat dinners are always free to students but we aren’t able to provide this amazing experience without your support. One Shabbat dinner, hosting on

She was most recently at the University of California, Santa Cruz, earning a B.S. in Cognitive Science and a minor in Jewish Studies. Alicia was involved with the programs and Hebrew school at Temple Bat Yahm, Newport Beach, where she also had her Bat Mitzvah. She attended Camp Silver Gan Israel and Camp Hess Kramer. At college she continued to kindle her Judiaism by attending weekly Shabbat dinners at Hillel and

Alicia was also involved with pro-Israel groups on campus that helped prevent BDS from passing, was the president of the Jewish-interest sorority Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi, and was one of the founders of the Jewish Student Union.
