An assault on all faiths Jews stand with Muslims after maniac attacks London mosque The Jewish community spoke as one this week in its support for British Muslims, in the wake of the deadly attack on worshippers outside Finsbury Park mosque, writes Adam Decker.

One man was killed and 11 people injured on Monday after a van driver, named by family and friends as Darren Osborne, 47, ploughed his vehicle into a crowd leaving the north London venue after late-night Ramadan prayers.

Witnesses described hearing the man, who was protected from an angry crowd by the mosque’s imam at the scene, shout: “I’m

going to kill Muslims.”

The Metropolitan Police’s Neil Basu said: “This is being treated as a terrorist attack,” adding that all of the casualties were Muslims.

He added: “The attack unfolded while a man was receiving first aid from the public at the scene. Sadly, he died.”

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis echoed the thoughts of the entire Jewish community, saying: “It is heartbreaking to hear of yet another deadly attack on the streets of London, this time targeting Muslims who had been at prayer. This is a painful illustration of why we must never allow

hatred to breed hatred. It creates a downward spiral of violence and terror with only further death and greater destruction. As ever, our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and may each of us resolve to respond to this latest tragedy with the same compassion and determination not to be divided, which has defined our society over recent months.”

Jewish vote cost Labour in London Constituencies in London with the highest number of Jewish voters returned the lowest increase in the Labour vote in this month’s general election it was revealed this week, writes Jenni Frazer.

Dr Daniel Allington, a lecturer in Leicester University’s Media and Communication department, says number-crunching indicates that “two percent more Jews in a constituency implies a roughly one percent smaller rise in Labour’s vote share”. Using figures from the 2011 Census (provided by his colleague, David

Beere) which show the percentage of Jews in 13 London constituencies, Dr Allington has used “regression analysis” on the rise in Labour’s vote between 2015 and the present day.

For example, where there are the smallest number of Jews living in a given constituency — such as Edmonton, where the 2011 Census indicates Jews form just 0.3 percent of the population — the vote share for Labour has risen by 10.1 percent from the 2015 election.

But in the two most densely Jewishly populated seats — Finchley and Golders Green and Hendon [where Jeremy Newmark and Mike Katz stood for Labour] where Jews comprise 21.1 percent and 17 percent of the total voting population — the rise in Labour votes is only 4.1 and 4.5 percent from the 2015 election.

By contrast, a constituency like Holborn and St Pancras, which shows its Jewish population at just 1.9 percent, recorded a socking 17.2 rise in the Labour vote over the last two years.

Dr Allington believes that Labour has paid a heavy price for not dealing properly with anti-Semitism in the party, and that this has been absorbed and recognised

by Jewish voters.

“Labour needs to take Jewish concerns much more seriously in the future,” he says.

Javid takes inspiration from Abraham Fund Communities Secretary Sajid Javid has praised the work of the Abraham Fund and, in a sombre speech to the charity’s UK fundraisers, pledged to do more to integrate communities in Britain to avoid more tragedies and terrorist outrages, writes Jenni Frazer.

The fund works for equal rights for Israel’s Jewish and Arab citizens.

paid “heartfelt thanks” to the emergency services workers who had dealt with the attacks in Manchester and London and the Grenfell Tower fire – and the imam who had saved the life of the Finsbury Park Mosque attacker.

He spoke of “a neighbourhood refusing to be divided, a city refusing to be cowed” at Finsbury Park. “The worst of Britain attacked Finsbury Park.

He said the integration strategy the government will publish later drew inspiration from what the Abraham Fund was doing in Israel.

OFSTED WARNING FOR OVERCROWDED GIRLS’ SCHOOL Pupils at an overcrowded Jewish girls school in Stamford Hill are “at risk of harm” according to Ofsted, writes Naomi Frankel.

Inspectors visiting Beis Ruchel d’Satmar found “exposed wires in three areas, mattresses stored above pupils’ desks in a classroom and an unmarked door leading to a basement containing workers’ tools which was left unlocked”.

Osted also noted that the school’s 572 pupils was “triple” the number for which the institution was officially registered.

BBC sorry for headline over Israeli police officer’s murder The BBC has apologised for a “biased” headline after an Israeli policewoman was killed by two Palestinians in Jerusalem.

In two separate incidents on Friday, Staff Sgt. Maj. Hadas Malka, 23, was stabbed near the Damascus Gate in the Old City, while another Palestinian man targeted passers-by at the nearby Zedekiah’s Cave. Two people were injured in the attack.

Malka later died of her wounds.

Her attackers, including one who was holding a jammed gun, were shot and killed, while the third assailant was also killed.

The BBC initally used the headline: “Three Palestinians killed after deadly stabbing in Jerusalem” emphasising the death of Palestinian assailants over their Israeli victims.

However, after widespread criticism, including from Donald Trump Jr, who tweeted: “This is as close to being misleading as possible” and, reportedly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it was changed to “Israeli policewoman stabbed to death in Jerusalem.”

In a statement the BBC said: “We accept that our original headline did

not appropriately reflect the nature of the events and subsequently changed it.

“While there was no intention to mislead our audiences, we regret any offence caused.”

ISIS initally claimed responsibilty for the attacks but this was denied

by Hamas and People’s Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which said the three attackers were their members.

“The attack was carried out by three Palestinians, two PFLP members and a Hamas member,” said

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri.

The PFLP said its two attackers were relatives who were both former prisoners in Israeli jails.

It was the latest bloodshed in a wave of Palestinian attacks on civilians and soldiers that erupted in 2015.

At times the attacks were daily occurrences, but they have relatively subsided in recent months.

However, there have been a string of recent attacks near the Old City.

Israel blames the violence on incitement by Palestinian political and religious leaders compounded on social media sites that glorify violence and encourage attacks.

Palestinians say it stems from anger over decades of Israeli rule in territories they claim for their future state.

Unite ‘in false Coyne charge’ The former challenger to lead the Unite union faced accusations of gross misconduct including over his comments about Ken Livingstone’s disciplinary hearing before being sacked as the union’s West Midlands secretary, Jewish News understands.

Gerard Coyne was suspended days before being narrowly defeated for the leadership by Len McCluskey this year – and said yesterday he had been sacked after a disciplinary hearing this month.

He said he originally faced seven

charges “amounting to gross misconduct” during the election campaign.

“They consisted of such heinous crimes as publicly criticising and challenging Mr McCluskey’s decisions in leaflets, newspapers and social media.

“This preposterous trumped up charge has been used to indict me – even though the returning officer from Electoral Reform Services had already ruled that there was no breach of the rules.”

A Unite spokeperson, referring to comments Coyne made to this paper in March, told Jewish News: “‘Mr Coyne’s comments to Jewish News were not included in any charges and were not considered by the disciplining officer.”

Jewish News and the Zionist Federation (ZF) today call on the government to fully proscribe Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation after a loophole in the law enabled its rifle-branded flag to fly freely in London last Sunday.

Hundreds of anti-Israel demonstrators marched through central London for the annual Al Quds Day march, holding banners reading ‘Boycott Israel’, ‘Zionism=racism’ and ‘We are all Hezbollah’. Organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission, participants marched behind a Hezbollah flag while the group’s symbol was carried by supporters and worn on clothing, including by children, without police action.

Britain outlaws the military wing of Hezbollah but not its political wing – even though leaders of the group suggest they are one and the same. Despite the group having only one flag, a disclaimer was pinned to some indicting support specifically for the political wing.

Lord Polak, honorary president of Conservative Friends of Israel, has written to Home Secretary Amber Rudd saying separating the two wings “is both untenable and an artificial exercise. Is it not time the UK demonstrates its commitment to combating extremism by joining our allies in proscribing the terror group in its entirety?”

The call was echoed by Labour Friends of Israel vice chair Louise Ellman, who wrote to London Mayor Sadiq Khan asking for a review of policing at the march. “I am concerned the mayor and the Metropolitan Police Service are constrained in their attempts to deal with this issue by the current status of Hezbollah,” she said.

The ZF, in partnership with Jewish News, today announces a campaign advocating full proscription. A government petition will be launched when the new committee is in place, while supporters will be encouraged to write to their MPs after the parliamentary recess.

ZF chairman Paul Charney said: “The false distinction between the so-called military and

political wings of Hezbollah makes a mockery of this country’s anti-terrorism policy, especially when its own leaders, most notably Mohammad Raad, Hezbollah’s leader in the Lebanese parliament, do not recognise such a distinction. The question must be asked why the British Government holds this distinction when Hezbollah themselves, and their funders in the Iranian regime, don’t. The ZF, alongside Jewish News, will campaign to end this dangerous distinction.” Christians United For Israel UK has launched its own petition, which has so far had more than 4,000 signatures.

Around 250 Israel supporters joined a counter demonstration in Grosvenor Square organised by the ZF and addressed by leaders of the Board of Deputies, Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and other communal groups.

Simon Johnson of the JLC said it had already made this “representation” about the Hezbollah flag to the prime minister for the past two years. “Now that we’ve suffered terrorist outrages in this country, surely it is time to be able to ban the flag of Hezbollah,” he said.

Speaking after addressing the counterdemo, Matthew Offord MP told Jewish News: “I’m going to continue to press the new [home secretary] to have this proscribed under the Terrorism Act.” In the run-up to Al Quds Day, more than 15,000 signed a petition calling on Khan to stop the march. Although he does not have the power to ban the march, he relayed communal concerns to the Met Commissioner and pressed for action against anyone breaking the law.

Mandy Blumenthal, part of a group of Israel advocates who stood in the rally’s path, said: “They’re so used to having the narrative and control. We felt we had no choice but to stand up against terrorism. Anybody who thinks waving Hezbollah flags is not incitement to hate doesn’t understand what those expressions mean.”  Editorial comment, page 18

Police probe Al Quds speaker POLICE FLIP-FLOPPING over Grenfell fire ‘Zionists’ slur ON TACKLING TERROR A prominent speaker at Sunday’s Al Quds Day march is being investigated by the police over comments made during the demonstration that appeared to blame the Grenfell Tower fire on supporters of Israel, Jewish News understands.

The Community Security Trust (CST) has complained to authorities about the Islamic Human Rights Commission leader Nazim Ali, over remarks made throughout the march.

Introducing speakers at the Al Quds Day march at Grosvenor Square, Ali told the 1,000-strong crowd: “Many innocents were murdered

by Theresa May’s cronies – many of which are supporters of Zionist ideologies. Some of the biggest corporations who are supporting the Conservative Party are Zionists. They are responsible for the murder in Grenfell. The Zionist supporters of the Tory Party.”

Ali was also heard chanting: “We are fed up of the Zionists. We are fed up of their rabbis. We are fed up of their synagogues. We are fed up of their supporters.”

Many marchers carried banners with messages including ‘Boycott Israel’, ‘Freedom for Palestine’ and ‘Zionism = racism’, with other placards saying “we are all Hezbollah”.

way through the capital’s retail heart, which was busy with shoppers, as Ali, on a loudspeaker led the protesters in chants of “Free Palestine”, and called Israel supporters as “terrorists”.

A police spokesperson told Jewish News: “We can confirm that we have received two allegations in relation to the Al Quds march. The allegations relate to flags displayed during the march and alleged anti-Semitic comments. Detectives from Westminster CID are investigating. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.”

ISLAMIC CHARITY PROBE Britain’s charity watchdog is probing the relationship between a registered charity and the organisers of the Al Quds march.

Jewish News has discovered that the Islamic Human Rights Commission Trust is subject of an “active case” opened before concerns were raised about the rally, organised by another organisation, the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), which is not a charity.

IHRC urged followers to bring Hezbollah flags, while a prominent speaker at the rally linked the Grenfell Tower fire to ‘Zionists’.

A Charity Commission spokeswoman said: “The Islamic Human Rights Commis-

sion Trust’ (charity number 1106120) is a separate legal entity from the IHRC, which is registered with and regulated by the Commission. We have an active case into the Islamic Human Rights Commission Trust which already includes examining their relationship with the IHRC. “This case was opened before concerns were raised with us regarding the march on 18 June 2017.”

She added: “The Commission expects the trustees to carefully consider, and take action to mitigate, the potential reputational risks to their charity which could arise from links and associations with other organisations.”

Another officer, scribbling notes throughout the demonstration and with a CCTV camera attached to his uniform, came over. He told me I was wise to be carrying a bottle of water in the 30 degree heat.

There’s a sense of helplessness when the emblem of a proscribed terrorist organisation is held high in my city, but police are more concerned with my footwear than the actions of those Hezbollah flagwavers.

Everyone has the right to protest, but in one of the most modern,

liberal, tolerant cities in the world, carrying the flag of a terrorist group should be beyond the pale.

We wouldn’t accept Isis flags fluttering down New Bond Street, yet as I stood in the middle of the road, facing a barrage of screaming demonstrators, there was a sea of yellow flags, branded with AK47s: the terrorist flag of Hezbollah.

Following advice from the march organisers, the Islamic Human Rights Commission, each had a carefully worded sticker on it: “This flag is to show my support for the political wing of Hezbollah.”

The flying of terrorist flags took place because of political malfunction. There has been an abject failure to recognise that not even Hezbollah distinguishes between its political and paramilitary wings.

They are one and the same: antiSemitic terrorists.

Lots of people blamed the police and Sadiq Khan – even though a ban is not within his remit – for this march’s brazenness. The reality is it took place because it was legal.

The law must be changed.

Great and good recognised in Queen’s honours

Members of the Jewish community from across the religious spectrum have been named in the latest Queen’s Birthday Honours List, with services to Holocaust education being highlighted this year, writes Jenni Frazer.

Broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky has been awarded an OBE for her work with Shoah survivors through the Holocaust Commission. Two survivors, Ibolya Knill, who lives in Leeds, and Sabina Miller, who lives in London, have been named Medallists of the Order of the British Empire; while Catherine Ashley, the former chair of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, has been made an OBE for her services to Shoah education. Two high-profile philanthropists, Trevor Pears and Frank Lowy, have also been knighted.

Speaking about the survivors’ honours, Karen Pollock MBE, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “We are delighted that Iby and Sabina have received this well-deserved recognition. They — and other Shoah survivors — willingly volunteer to relive their most horrific moments for the sake of the future.

Elie Wiesel said that ‘when you hear from a witness you become a witness’; there will be thousands more witnesses across the UK as a result of these determined survivors.

“Sadly, survivors of the Holocaust are becoming fewer and frailer, and in time they will no longer be able to share their testimonies.

That is why I am absolutely thrilled that Natasha Kaplinsky has been recognised for her efforts in securing these testimonies on film so their stories will be preserved for generations to come.”

Knill, now 94, spent her early childhood in Bratislava, in the former Czechoslovakia.

Although her parents were Jewish, she was baptised in her teens and felt herself to be Christian.

However, she was still seen as a Jew by the Nazis and was deported to Auschwitz after working for the resistance in Hungary. Her war ended on the way to Belsen on 1 April 1945. After recovering in hospital following liberation, she became an

interpreter for the British Military Government.

There she met Bert Knill, a major in the British army. They married in Bratislava in December 1946, before she came to England in March 1947.

Knill published a book about her experiences, The Woman Without a Number, and is an active speaker about the Holocaust to young people.

Great-grandmother Miller, 95, spent the war years on the run in a variety of hiding places, under assumed names. She came to Britain in 1947.

Olivia Marks-Woldman, chief executive of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, said: “These honours are a mark of the respect and admiration for survivors and educators held by those at the highest levels of British society. They remind us that people who dedicate so much time and effort to furthering education and commemoration about the Holocaust and genocide are respected, honoured and valued.”

Dame Stephanie (Steve) Shirley, who arrived in Britain on the Kindertransport and became a leading entrepreneur and philanthropist, has been made a Companion of Honour for her services to the IT industry and philanthropy.

Lord Stern of Brentford, whose father came to Britain after Kristallnacht, has also been made a Companion of Honour.

Pears, whose knighthood was announced in the Overseas List, is honoured for his philanthropy as executive chairman of the Pears Family Charitable Foundation. He said: “I am immensely appreciative and grateful to my brothers Mark and David, my wife Daniela, and to all of my family for their tremendous support — and to our fantastic team and all of our partners.”

Lowy, chairman of the Westfield Corporation, which builds shopping centres all over the world, is a Czech-born Holocaust survivor who settled in Australia where he started his business. Immediately after the war he fought in the Haganah in Israel’s War of Independence and today holds joint Australian-Israeli citizenship.

A knighthood also goes to Ukrainian-born American Len Blavatnik for his philanthropic work; while the former executive director of the Community Security Trust (CST), Richard

Business owner Edward Ziff has been made OBE for his services to the economy and the community in Leeds. He told Jewish News: “I am thrilled to have been given this honour. I love my work, charitable efforts and I endeavour to make a difference to other people’s lives. I had great teachers in my parents and have been encouraged at all times to achieve and aim high by my wife Dee, my children, and my siblings”.

Ziff, whose father received an OBE and whose mother received an MBE, is a member of the United Hebrew Congregation in Shadwell Lane and comes from a strong tradition of communal service. He has worked with Leeds Jewish Welfare Board and with the city’s Jewish Blind Society, which he incorporated into the LJWB. He said: “This honour comes at a time when in the UK we have seen some tragic events unfold. It is with mixed feelings I celebrate this honour as I am incredibly aware of the pain and suffering that the people caught up in those tragedies are having to endure”.

Two more OBEs go to Lady Ritblat, the former Jillian Slotover, for her contribution to arts philanthropy, and to Ashley Tabor, the head of the Global Radio empire for his services to media.

Nottingham’s Liberal Jewish leader David Lipman is honoured with an MBE, as are Stuart Nagler, for his voluntary work in Hertfordshire, and Keith Simons, for his work with Jewish prisoners and with the community in Pinner.

Peggy Sherwood gets a MBE for her work with the Jewish Gay and Lesbian movement, while Dr Rudolf Leavor is honoured as a medallist of the order of the British Empire (BEM) for his interfaith work in Bradford and services to its Jewish community.

Rachel (Ruchie) Ehrentreu, wife of the former head of the London Beth Din, Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu, has also been made BEM for her work with vulnerable elderly in north-west London.

For 32 years, Ehrentreu, who turns 84 this month, has been chaplain and hospital visitor at the Royal Free Hospital, running the Chevra Kadisha and helping to train women in its work.

She also launched an organisation called Neshei for elderly people, helping to keep them active.

Her response to her award? “First I feel I don’t deserve it. But it is an honour for the Jewish people, and I always say that giving is living.”

Professor Jonathan Gershuny of Nuffield College, Oxford, has been awarded a CBE. Gershuny is a social scientist and economic historian who is director of the Centre for Time Use Research.

He has amassed data from nearly 25 countries, including Israel, as to how people spend their days. The results of the research can be used to help shape national policy on issues including public health and the gender pay gap.

SECURITY GUARD JAILED FOR TRYING TO JOIN ISIS A former security guard at Crossrail who threatened a shopkeeper for selling the Charlie Hebdo magazine has been jailed for trying to join Isis in Syria.

Shamim Ahmed, 24, was stopped at the Turkish border and returned to Britain in January last year. The year before, he had emailed the prime minister’s office threatening to “wage jihad and slaughter” against Israel and its allies, saying: “We are coming for you soon for revenge.”

DAVID GROSSMAN IS FIRST ISRAELI TO WIN BOOKER PRIZE David Grossman has won the Man Booker International Prize for his novel about a stand-up comedian who falls apart on stage.

A Horse Walks Into A Bar was selected from 126 titles, with the £50,000 prize split between the author and translator.

Chair of the judges Nick Barley said: “We were bowled over by Grossman’s willingness to take emotional as well as stylistic risks.”

The translator was Jessica Cohen.

Golders Green station plan shelved A radical plan by Transport for London to redevelop Golders Green station, which would have included the dismantling of the clock tower, has been stopped in its tracks after major local opposition.

The clock tower is a war memorial, erected in 1923. In recognition of the high numbers of Jewish servicemen who died in the First World War, it was decided not to use religious symbols, but to put up a four-sided clock tower instead.

The original Transport for London proposals envisaged a covered bus station with flats and offices above, and the dismantling and relocation of the clock tower.

But after the plans were unveiled in

February, there was local uproar and claims that the proposals would “vandalise the heart of Golders Green”.

A number of Barnet councillors called on the Town Hall and TfL to think again.

Revised plans are now being discussed and they will continue to be monitored by councillors.

Shimon Ryde and Peter Zinkin, Conservative councillors for Childs Hill, said: “TfL has recognised the overwhelming local opposition to their plans and has been forced to go back to the drawing board.

“While this is good news, TfL still plans to develop the station as a hub for its bus operation in north-west London.”

TfL wanted to dismantle Golders Green’s Clock Tower for redevelopment

Leaders to address Sunday’s Balfour conference Community leaders will address a pro-Israel conference in London for grassroots activists ahead of the centenary of the Balfour Declaration.

The event has been organised to mark 100 years since the historic letter was sent, on 2 November, from the UK’s Foreign Secretary, Arthur James (later Lord) Balfour, to the second Lord Rothschild, a Jewish communal leader, signalling British support for a Jewish state.

The conference will cover the history of the declaration, its implications for modern Israel, and campaign

skills to defend the Jewish State against those who seek to delegitimise it.

Planned for Sunday, the event features speakers including a senior Israeli diplomat, Yossi Kuperwasser, former chief of the research division in IDF Military Intelligence, Lord Turnberg of pro-Israel advocacy group StandWithUs UK, and figures from the Jewish community in the UK. Breakout sessions will feature topics including the portrayal of the declaration in the media, ensuring Israel’s legitimacy on campus, and online.

Community organisations taking part include the organisers We Believe in Israel, CEOs of the Jewish Leadership Council and Board of Deputies, in addition to participants from BICOM, UK Lawyers For Israel, the Union of Jewish Students, Israel Britain Alliance, the Zionist Federation and more.  Tickets for the conference, on 25 June, are £10 for adults and £5 for students, and can be bought by following the link on webelieveinisrael.org.uk

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the alleged mosque attacker may

have plotted to target Sunday’s proPalestine Al Quds Day march.

Andy Parker, the landlord of a pub Osborne frequented, told The Daily Telegraph: “He was very motivated about the Muslim Al Quds rally going on in London and kept saying: ‘Our brothers and sisters are dying and someone needs to do something about it.’”

After ranting about the demonstration, Osborne reportedly got drunk and fell asleep in the van, which he later used to carry out the mosque attack.  Editorial comment, page 18

Businessman houses couple after deli blaze The Jewish owner of a care provider in Barnet has housed a couple left homeless after the fire at Kay’s kosher supermarket on Golders Green Road, and given them both jobs.

Larry Berkowitz, of Bluebird Care, stepped in after hearing that the couple, Sil and Riv, who are both in their 20s, had been “left with nothing” and “sleeping on the streets”, with one sleeping on a bench and the other underneath it.

“I heard about it on Facebook,” said Berkowitz, whose company pro-

vides home care across the borough.

“Luckily we had a flat vacant so we’ve given that to them for a month or two, rent-free, until they find their feet, and we have also given them jobs, as they were looking for employment.”

No one was hurt in the fire, on Princes Parade, Golders Green Road, but another couple lost their three-yearold dog, Daisy, after she raised the alarm.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown.

Campaign launched for WW1 family headstone The Queen meets rabbis and other faith leaders

RABBIS MEET QUEEN IN CHILDREN’S MEMORIAL Four rabbis took part in a ceremony attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in memory of 18 children killed 100 years ago, after a German bomber attacked a school.

Jewish researchers in the UK, including military historian Stan Kaye, helped trace the descendant of those whose family members were caught up in the first daylight raid by a Gotha, a fixed-wing bomber, on 13 June 1917.

At around 11.20am, the bomb dropped on Upper North Street School in Poplar (now

Mayflower Primary School).

Descendants of both those killed and those who survived attended the interfaith ceremony at All Saints Church in Poplar, East London, which was conducted by the Bishop of Stepney.

Attending were Armed Forces Chaplain Rabbi Reuben Livingstone, Rabbi Alan Plancey formerly of Borehamwood Synagogue, Rabbi David Mason of Muswell Hill, and Rabbi Dr Abraham Levy, former leader of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation.

Jewish community organisations are backing a campaign by a Jewish historian for headstones to honour members of a Jewish family buried at Plashet Cemetery who were killed by a German bomb 100 years ago.

by Peterborough-based historian Stan Kaye to raise money for headstones for members of the Moss family from Bethnal Green.

Mother Rebecca Moss was killed with her children Hetty and Esther on 13 June 1917 in a German bombing raid over London – the same raid that killed 18 schoolchildren in Poplar [see left]. Rebecca was 35, Hettie 11 and Esther five.

Rebecca’s twins Betsy and Cissie, aged nine months, also later died of their injuries, as did a Jewish family member who was lodging in the house at the time. “All the graves

The heart-warming reaction came within hours of a call for help from Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue, with 50 volunteers sorting helpful donations including toiletries, toys, clothes and food.

Organisers said the synagogue fast reached capacity as residents brought items for those caught up in last Tuesday’s tragedy.

“This amazing achievement was thanks to the support of hundreds, if not thousands, of local people who wanted to help another group of people in their time of need and grief,” said resident Phil Korklin, who organised the appeal with his wife Katie.

Synagogue chair Simon Mitchell said: “To see so many adults and children from all over the area come together at such short notice, and be so generous, was just mind-blowing.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by the tragic Grenfell Tower fire.”

Kaye came across the Moss family’s story while researching others buried at Plashet Jewish Cemetery, and later found a newspaper cutting relating to the family while searching the archives at the Royal London Hospital.

The father was a Russian Jewish bootmaker who had been out shopping when the air raid took place. When he rushed home he found the scene of devastation, recorded in the archives.

Yvonne Joss of LJW said it was supportive of Kaye’s work to remedy the lack of headstones, adding: “We hope the community comes together to raise funds for this.”

Norwood opens high-tech care home ...and you won’t believe your eyes!

Curtains that close at a blink of the eye and a magic carpet where residents with cerebral palsy can play football are just two of the hightech innovations at a London care home which opened last week, writes Naomi Frankel.

Norwood’s £1.1million smart facility in Lyonsdown Road, Barnet, offers £600,000 worth of assistive technology to help tenants lead independent lives.

Elaine Kerr, the charity’s chief executive, said: “Norwood’s first smart house sets a high standard we want to continue in the future.”

Home manager Sharon Harrison says tenants such as Joe Scoates, 23, and Stephanie Harris, 24, who have speech and visual difficulties due to cerebral palsy, can now become “as independent as possible within their own home”. This independence is thanks to a device called Eye Gaze, which uses an infrared sensor camera to control doors and curtains through iris recognition.

“It’s fantastic,” Harrison added. “With staff support, Steph and Joe can choose their own meals, switch TV channels and even select their own outfits on the interactive playback screen.

There is also an option to call their families and it’s all through using their eyes.”

The supported living accommodation includes a sensory room equipped with programmable LED lights and beanbags. Stephanie,

Former JFS pupil dies, aged 17 Family and friends have paid tribute to a teenager who has died following a motorcycle accident.

Former JFS student David Pressman, 17, passed away on Monday after being injured in the crash last Wednesday.

A spokesman for the school said: “We were shocked and saddened to hear of David’s untimely death.

“He was an active and valued member of our school community, both as a student officer and a part of many school productions.

“He will be sadly missed

by his friends and teachers.

“He’s been taken way too soon, but has done so many amazing things in these past 17 years, like bungee jumping, 400-mile motorcycle rides, tours, and loads of incredible adventures and memories.”

Holocaust survivor’s Israel trip ruled out A Holocaust survivor who complained that being in a care home made her feel ‘“like a prisoner again in the German concentration camp’’ should not travel to Israel for a holiday, a judge has been told.

The woman, who is in her 90s and has dementia, is at the centre of litigation in the Court of Protection in London – which considers issues relating to people who lack the mental capacity to take decisions.

The woman, who uses a wheelchair, had said she had friends in Israel and wanted to visit, Judge Eldergill had been told. trip to Israel has now been ruled out, with all involved concluding that it would not be in the woman’s best interests.

She had been admitted to hospital after a fall, then was placed in a care home more than two years ago. Relatives had thought that she could not manage at home.

The judge said her confinement in a concentration camp was one of the reasons why she placed such “high value on her liberty’’. She had said she wanted to be buried in Israel.

REVEALED: EUROPE’S TREE OF THE YEAR HAS JEWISH ROOTS

The newly-crowned European Tree of the Year sheltered a Jewish family from the Nazis, it has been revealed.

Oak Józef in the village of Wiśniowa, south-eastern Poland, topped a public poll with 17,597 votes from people in 16 countries, after nominations were invited for “trees with a story” to compete for this year’s top tree.

The winning tree, which is 650 years old, was used as a hide-out by the Jewish Hymi brothers, after they fled a nearby Oak Józef sheltered the Jewish Hymi brothers from Nazi labour camp. Jewish man held in North Korea dies The Jewish-American student held in North Korea for 17 months and returned home in a coma last week has died.

“It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home,” his family said.

The 22-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate, who took part in a Birthright trip to Israel in 2014, was on a student tour of North Korea last year when he was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of hard labour for taking down a propaganda poster.

When he was released last week in a coma, doctors said all regions of his brain had suffered extensive damage. He died at the University of Cincinnati medical centre.

Terror loophole makes London a laughing stock Only Hezbollah’s military wing is proscribed in this country but, absurdly, given its own leaders admit they are one in the same thing, the political wing is not. So it was no surprise that the organisers of Sunday’s Al Quds hate-fest felt emboldened to publish online the following directive ahead of the march: “You can bring a Hezbollah flag to show support for the political wing of Hezbollah.”

And the marchers took that lead; on flags, banners, draped around young children, the symbol of Hezbollah (featuring, for those unclear about the group’s aims, a rifle and dagger) littered the streets of London in scenes that shamed our city and country. You could almost hear the organisers laughing at the law. Chuckles which turned to belly laughs when they started openly pinning disclaimers on to rifle-emblazoned flags, seeking to make out support was reserved for the political wing. You couldn’t make it up.

Hezbollah has been responsible for some one of the worst terrorist outrages against Jews. Its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, said: “If Jews gather in Israel, it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide.”

Today, in association with the Zionist Federation, we launch a campaign for the flag to be banished from our streets. It’s nothing short of a disgrace that such a call must now be repeated. There can no longer be any room for interpretation when it comes to public shows of support for a murderous group that has Jews in its crosshairs simply for being Jewish.

Like others across Britain – indeed the world – we were horrified to hear about the sickening attack on Finsbury Park Mosque, which left one dead and 11 injured.

That someone made it his aim to kill innocent people, particularly when they were at prayer, is utterly incomprehensible. It has been reported as a ‘lone wolf’ attack, although of course this does not make it any less traumatic.

The imam who protected the alleged perpetrator until the police could come to arrest him did the right, if difficult, thing. We must let justice be done and be seen to be done. In the meantime, let us call out hatred in whatever form it takes and let us remember that, as Jo Cox said, we have far more in common that that which divides us.

You quote a survey by the Anti-Defamation League of anti-Semitic attitudes (Jewish News, 2 June 2017). One aspect mentioned is that one-third of those questioned believe British Jews are more loyal to Israel than to the UK. I don’t know if this perception matches reality, but I’m convinced the Board of Deputies’ document, The Jewish Manifesto, gives succour to that perception. In its 44 pages, the word “Britain” appears twice, the phrase “UK” three times and the words “Israel” or “Israeli” 62 times.

The Board’s document has many good points regarding how we, as British Jews, need to have a government that will address our concerns over our Jewish way of life in this coun-

try, e.g. brit milah, shechita, faith schools and protection for visiting to schools, synagogues and other Jewish institutions.

It is not unreasonable either when the document states any UK government ought to promote peace in the Middle East.

But when it talks of the security, prosperity of and equality within Israel, it is stepping in to less appropriate territory.

It needs to be firmly reminded that for any General Election, citizens are expected to use their votes to elect a government we judge will be most beneficial to the UK. The time for campaigning for Israel’s benefit ought to be between elections, not during.

Clash of religions is to blame In the Talmud, it is said: “If one comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” Many of the terror acts in Israel are committed by Hamas-associated terrorists from Hebron (Sarura) (Jewish News, 2 June 2017).

The Israel Defence Forces are there to prevent the Jews in Israel being terrorised. The terrorists do not go for the Israeli Arabs.

In the 1960s I lived in Israel in a moshav on the border with Jordan.

The terrorists, called Fedaiun, came from Jordan and killed my neighbour and devastated the family.

There was no “occupation” then.

I assure Emily Hilton and her friends that behind their backs they are being laughed and mocked at by the very

Arab Palestinians they support.

Had the Palestinians rejected terror and opted for peace in the 50 years since the war unleashed by Arab states on Israel, it would have been a blessings for all the populations. However, they are bent on the destruction of Israel. They will accept nothing else, mainly because Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel is against the Muslim faith. Even the Muslim liberals believe that Islam replaced Judaism.

When will the humanitarian living in affluent London understand that the problem is not “occupation” but clash of religions? Islam rejects Judaism and regards Jews as almost subhuman. Islam uses the Palestinians as a dagger in the heart of Israel.

Israel standing strong may eventually result in Islam reforming itself.

By siding with Israel’s enemies and the anti-Semites in Europe, Miss Hilton and her like-minded Jewish friends are taking the chance that it is they who will be rejected by the Jewish community in England.

Terror flags in London are an insult to British victims ❝

n Sunday, up to 1,000 sympathisers of a terror organisation marched through London with impunity.

Protestors at this ‘Al Quds (Jerusalem) Day Rally’ raised the flag of the anti-Semitic, sectarian shia-jihadist group Hezbollah, while the London Metropolitan Police protected them.

We knew this would happen, because the rally’s organisers at the so-called Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) had brazenly issued guidelines encouraging protestors to do so.

Coming just under two weeks since it was revealed to public incredulity that London bridge terrorist Khurram Butt had flown the ISIS flag without consequence on a television documentary, our impotency in the face of terrorist propaganda was once again mocked.

it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide.” Let there be no doubt, Hezbollah is an anti-Semitic, sectarian shia-jihadist terror organisation that advocates the annihilation of Jews worldwide, and has militarily backed Assad’s atrocities in Syria for geo-sectarian reasons at the behest of its state sponsor, Iran.

It was, in fact, the Iranian regime, newly under the control of Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979, that initiated the annual marking of ‘Al Quds Day’ on the third Friday of the month of Ramadan with the opening declaration: “Israel, the enemy of mankind, the enemy of humanity…” The rally’s London organisers, the IHRC, have been acting mouthpieces for Iranian Islamism in Britain for a long time since.

Although the British government has proscribed the “military wing” of Hezbollah under the Terrorism Act 2000, its “political wing” is not proscribed. Section 13 of the Terrorism Act is clear that “a person in a public place commits an offence if he wears an item of clothing, or wears, carries or displays an article, in such a way or in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that he is a member or supporter of a proscribed organisation”.

Ignoring this, the Met took the view that if someone carries a Hezbollah flag, officers should presume that the person is supporting Hezbollah’s “political activity” and not any of Hezbollah’s acts of terrorism.

This is absurd. Even Hezbollah refutes this arbitrary division.

Its deputy secretary-general Naim Qassem told the Los Angeles Times that the “same leadership that directs the parliamentary and government work also leads jihad actions in the struggle against Israel”. In other words, our politicians fudged it.

Why must ordinary everyday British Muslims be expected to bear the brunt of public anger because of indefensible political correctness of our institutions, politicians and bureaucrats?

Imagine the BNP were ingrained into the fabric of our institutions in this way. Such gross negligence towards Islamism in this country can only be explained by the harbouring of a bigotry of low expectations towards Muslim extremists. And it is inevitably our communities, Muslims or otherwise, who suffer.

London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan has spoken passionately about his anger at terrorists abusing his faith to kill innocents. The mayor’s personal intervention and appeal to the Met’s Commissioner Cressida Dick, at the late hour was needed. Polarised times such as these require leadership. Savvy political statements are for ordinary politicians. But it takes a statesman to show true leadership. Anything less is an insult to all those we lost to jihadist attacks in Westminster, Manchester and London Bridge over the last three months.

To honour those victims, terrorist flags should not have been allowed to fly in London on Sunday. It is as simple as that.

ritain’s Jewish community has been sucked into a debate about whether or not it is time to engage with Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party. Maybe it has been a mistake to stake so much political and financial capital on the Tories, but one suspects that however much effort is expended on Corbyn’s socialist leadership, it will not make any difference at all to their unacceptable views on Hamas, Hezbollah, the IRA, Venezuela, or any other radical causes that come to mind. These are hard-boiled views on the far left, which will not be evicted by any amount of schmoozing.

Where the community should be focusing its views is on social media. It was clever use by the left of social media that delivered the far better than expected general election outcome for Corbyn and his pals and stunned Theresa May and the Tories.

There were several strands to Labour’s

Instead, the social media posts co-ordinated

It was a strategy   that rescued Labour from demolition and allowed Corbyn to play the Bernie Sanders card of wise uncle who has had enough of the existing order.

So where does this leave the Jewish community? Far more effective than reaching out to Corbyn and his henchmen would be for our community to join the social media war pointing out the shortcomings of the Labour leadership and its fellow travellers. In that way they could potentially be kept in check.

The old ways of wining and dining the enemy to keep them sweet are simply no longer good enough.













Prime Minister Jeremy Corbyn – let that possibility sink in BRIAN GORDON

T

he recent drama in British politics unfolded like a Purim story. No fiction writer could have devised a more amazing and unlikely set of events.

A prime minister chose to call a General Election totally unexpectedly, looking as though she would achieve a landslide victory.

Her opponent was nationally perceived as an extremist, eccentric misfit – disliked by most of his own MPs – who was as likely to win the election as fly to the moon.

Seven weeks later, the situation was unrecognisable. The “unelectable” opponent nearly reached Downing Street and had almost his entire party praising him. The prime minister, who survived in office by a whisker, had thousands of former supporters calling for her blood. As it says in the Megillah, V’nahafoch hu (and it was turned upside down). The story even concluded with a hanging. Not, thankfully, of a person, but of Parliament itself.

THE MOST POWERFUL REMINDER FROM THIS INCREDIBLE FIASCO IS THAT IN THIS WORLD, HUMANS ARE NOT IN CHARGE The most powerful reminder to us all from this incredible fiasco is that, in this world, humans are not in charge. Everything in terms of national affairs, international relations and political trends is utterly unpredictable.

In the wake of the election results, I took a closer look at the footage of Jeremy Corbyn addressing a welcoming meeting for Hezbollah representatives at the House of Commons three years ago. He referred repeatedly and deliberately to “our friends” both in Hezbollah and

anti-terrorist. They harbour a healthy loathing for Mr Corbyn and his left-wing ilk, who are typecast as ardent supporters of Sinn Fein and the IRA. Jewish people are enjoined by the Mishnaic sages to pray for the government’s welfare. Let us not forget that the past two governments were more actively supportive on Jewish issues, in combating anti-Semitism and backing Israel, than any previous one in British history. For this we should all be grateful.

My own prayer would be along the following lines. That the Conservative party be granted the good sense to unite behind its leader, be it Mrs May or any successor, so it can continue to govern effectively. That the party does not rip itself apart with internal disputes about the appropriate “hardness” of Brexit. That the government becomes more sensitive and people-friendly in the presentation of its policies – especially when it comes to senior citizens and the youth, whose views and voting clout cannot be ignored... The alternative, a socialist government led by Corbyn and his comrades, could cause irreparable damage to the freedom and relative prosperity we enjoy in this country.

Hamas, describing the former as people who sought peace and should not be condemned as terrorists. I studied his subsequent pernicious remarks, in which he compared Israel’s Government with ISIS. Both speeches were chilling.

The very notion that an old-fashioned communist like Corbyn could become the leader of this country is enough to fill any decent freedom-loving person who understands history with dread. Many people I canvassed during the campaign said that if this man and his henchmen ever achieved power they would seriously consider emigrating. I believe they meant it.

The decision to call the snap election, which I am sure Theresa May did not make on her own, proved to be a terrible mistake. So was the lacklustre nature of the Conservative campaign.

There is a positive side to all this. The results could have been far worse. The Conservatives still have by far the largest party in Parliament.

With the support of the 10 Democratic Unionists, they can certainly form a stable government with a small working majority. The DU are Conservative in all but name, right-wing with a social and moral conscience, strongly loyal to the unity of the UK, very pro-Israel, pro-Jewish and

Terrorism is terrorism – unless it’s on the BBC MARK REGEV

ISRAEL’S AMBASSADOR TO THE UK

L

ast Friday in Jerusalem, three Palestinian terrorists perpetrated a coordinated terror attack, using automatic weapons and knives.

One of the terrorists lunged at 23-yearold Israeli border police officer Hadas Malka with a knife, severely wounding her. She later died.

Terror is ugly. It aims to perpetrate death and propagate fear. In order to fight this scourge, which has taken too many innocent lives in Israel, the United Kingdom, and across the world, we must begin by not shying away from naming and shaming those who enact it, and those who support it.

The Fatah movement – headed by President Mahmoud Abbas – rather than condemn Friday’s attack and take action to prevent future acts of terror instead chose to praise the terrorists as heroes. The Palestinian Authority, which Abbas leads, will now bestow generous salaries upon the

WE MUST NOT SHY AWAY FROM NAMING AND SHAMING THOSE WHO ENACT AND SUPPORT TERROR terrorists and their families, creating an incentive for the next attack. Tellingly, the Fatah statement condemned not the attack in which Hadas Malka was killed, but the Israeli police officers who acted to neutralise the threat posed by the armed terrorists.

Meanwhile, last Friday here in London, a distinguished media outlet seemingly adopted this destructive narrative. The BBC headlined its article: ‘Three Palestinians killed after deadly stabbing in Jerusalem’.

Corrections and apologies were swiftly made and published. Yet one cannot escape a feeling that some bias still persists, and more importantly, that not enough is being done by the media to call out terrorism for what it is. Troublingly, there appears in some quarters to be a distinction between ‘bad terrorism’ that targets the innocent in London and Manchester, and ‘other terrorism’ that targets innocent Israelis.

It was a sad weekend in Israel, as Hadas Malka’s funeral was held on Saturday evening. Her friends mourned her as a dedicated officer who volunteered for duty in and around the Old City, undeterred by numerous stabbing incidents over the past year. She bravely fought with her attacker before being critically injured, her actions preventing a larger loss of life.

Then came Sunday, and back in London we witnessed people taking to the streets for the annual Al Quds Day march, the event that the Iranian regime founded in order to burn Israeli flags and call for the Jewish state’s obliteration. The flags of the terrorist group Hezbollah were proudly on display,

green assault rifle on a yellow background, adorned by adults and children alike. Little stickers haphazardly taped to the flags informed us that they were meant to show support ‘for the political wing of Hezbollah’, as if anyone seriously believes that the organisation – responsible for countless terror attacks, including on European soil – has a well-meaning ‘political wing’.

We must be clear: Hezbollah is a terrorist group that takes its orders from the ayatollahs in Iran. Similarly, when the Palestinian Authority refers to terrorists as ‘martyrs’ and rewards them and their families with cash payments, it too is encouraging terror.

The first necessary step in solving any problem is to recognise it. That is why terrorists go to great lengths to hide their identities and have us believe their organisations are charitable, political or otherwise innocent. No amount of misreporting, no quantity of pamphlets or stickers, no volume of caveats or disclaimers can change the fact that terrorism is terrorism. Terrorism must be condemned in London. Terrorism must be condemned in Jerusalem.

More of us must step up to challenge inequality LAURA MARKS

ew people outside our community can believe that Jewish women struggle for equality. In my years of experience, working with women in other faith groups and the wider world, there is incredulity that Jewish women, often powerful, determined, educated and leading the way in secular society, should still lag so far behind in leadership roles within the community itself.

After six years of concerted, planned and structured effort, and some substantial change, we still struggle with diversity particularly (but not only) with our women and it’s time to take stock. Initiatives such as the groundbreaking Gender Equality Plan, in which six enthusiastic organisations committed to reviewing and changing their organisational systems and saw tangible improvements in gender balance, led Paul Anticoni, CEO of World Jewish Relief, to suggest that changes take “time, commitment and adherence to good governance, practices that might not be possible or even palatable to all within our community”.

This week we celebrated the achievements of Women in Jewish Leadership (WJL), a commis-

At a reception in London with 150 guests, and at which the National Union of Students’ incoming president, Shakira Martin, made her first appearance, we heard about how pressure from WJL, within a crafted and structured plan, has spearheaded interest in an age-old problem.

Working alongside other communal organisations, WJL has ensured more women on Jewish boards, more women CEOs, a campaign to stop the depressing habit of all male panels, and the setting up of women’s networks and mentoring programmes.

WJL is widely recognised as a catalyst for change across our community, creating a climate

in which huge strides have been made, such as women chairing boards of United Synagogues which was impossible just five years ago.

We know there are three components to change. The first is for organisations to embrace best practice in governance and develop systems that are fair for all. The second is for women to be prepared to step up, no small ask in a community in which the culture and family structures are predominantly traditional. And the third is for the issue to remain alive and focused, rather than being buried in a dusty report on a shelf.

Now, after years of campaigning and work, the movement for change will be backed by new or invigorated women and women’s organisations, such as United Synagogue Women and the cross-communal Association of Jewish Women’s Organisations, which are determined that we move forwards. The Board of Deputies has committed to developing the next phase in the campaign and to champion the cause of equality and diversity in our community, to challenge the status quo and to bring in younger women.

More women should be encouraged to stand as deputies, as currently only about 30 percent are women in a community where over half our adults are female. Similarly, the JLC, which highlighted the problem of gender equality, needs to demonstrate an improved system of ensuring a more equal representation of women on its own

Board. But clearly the challenge is far broader than this with, at the last measure in 2014, a pay gap of 22 percent between male and female CEOs of Jewish organisations.

As I end my six years co-chairing this project with Norma Brier, and having been blessed with an army of talented, generous volunteers as partners, I offer three challenges to the community.

First, the Board of Deputies, and the other organisations engaged in equalities, need a serious plan for change. Change doesn’t happen on its own and the only way forwards is through clear, measurable and actionable planning.

It is up to all of us, men and women alike, to ensure in this way, that the community benefits from the skills of everyone regardless of gender.

Second, it is time for new and younger people to engage with the issues. Do please climb on our shoulders – as we have been supported by the women who came before us – but don’t assume the job is done. We need people, regardless of gender, to step up now.

And thirdly, let us all celebrate rather than begrudge increases in diversity, which make our community even richer and more vibrant.

Our women, like our men, are an enormous asset, contributing a vital perspective. Let’s make certain they are seen in every part of our communal life and their voices are heard for the good, not ‘just’ of the women, but for us all.

30 years of chutzpah!

After three decades, TV’s oldest show is full of Jewish shtick, writes Alex Suskind

I

n The Simpsons episode, Sleeping with the Enemy, local punk and two-tone laugh machine Nelson Muntz pines for his estranged father with a throaty rendition of Papa, Can You Hear Me? from the movie Yentl. (“Papa, can you seeeee me?

Papa, can you fiiiiinnd meee in the noiiiiighhht?” he belts off-key.)

In modern comedy, Jewish humour is part of the bedrock, so it’s unsurprising that a reference to a famed rabbinical love story would make its way into the most consequential sitcom in history.

Yet the beloved cartoon series, which recently turned 30, doesn’t always get credit for its Judaica bonafides.

Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie may grudgingly attend church every Sunday, but their world has as much Yiddish in it as Herschel Shmoikel Pinchas Yerucham Krustofsky.

For the uninitiated, Krustovsky, better known by his nom de plume,

Krusty the Clown, is the show’s unofficial Jewish spokesman. His birth name is first revealed during the season three episode Like Father, Like Clown, where he’s asked to say grace before dinner with the Simpsons.

“Baruch atah Adonai, eloheinu melech haolam…” begins Krusty.

“Hee hee,” says Homer, “he’s talking funny talk.”

“No, dad,” says Lisa. “That’s Hebrew.”

Saying the hamotzi brings back painful memories for Krusty, who soon regales the table with the sad tale of his childhood.

Krusty’s past is the typical Jewish migration story: his parents, immigrants from the old country, land Stateside some time in the first half of the 20th century in “The Lower East Side of Springfield” – a neighbourhood filled with tailors, butchers and yarmulke stores – where they look to raise their son.

But much to the consternation of his father, a rabbi at Temple Beth Springfield, young Herschel decides to skip out on a “respectful profes-

sion,” and instead pursues the life of a clown.

“Oy vey iz mir,” shouts Rabbi Hyman Krustovsky (voiced by Jackie Mason), when he later discovers Herschel’s secret career path. “You have brought shame on our family!”

Back at dinner, Krusty goes into a tailspin. He’s finally let the truth out, but he has nothing to show for it, leading Bart and Lisa to come up with a plan to reunite father and son.

They eventually ply the rabbi with Talmudic references about parent-child relationships as a reason to forgive his “boychik,” and by the end of the episode, Herschel and Hyman are patching things up with a rendition of Oh Mein Papa.

The episode transformed Krusty from lovable supporting character into the cartoon’s Jewish conduit.

Writer Marc L. Pinsky explained the lengths the writers went to make sure Like Father, Like Clown accurately represented the teachings of the Torah. “To write this thing we had three rabbis on the payroll,”

he said. “They were working with us all week to make sure we got it biblically correct. We love to do our homework on the show.”

Pinsky and his colleagues have helped set the tone for The Simpsons by peppering its storylines with winks and nods to their religion: the Chai hanging around newsman Kent Brockman’s (née Kenny Brockelstein’s) neck, the appearance of the “rapping rabbis” (Springfield’s answer to the Benedictine Monks), the Itchy and Scratchy bris episode (which ends with Itchy turning Scratchy into a kiddush cup), Homer asking Marge if they’re Jewish (when she tells him no, he celebrates by cutting into an entire pig).

Even lesser known characters like Dolph, who is seen throwing on a talit and running off to Hebrew lessons, and Duff Beer spokesman Duffman, are later revealed as members of the tribe.

Despite these revelations, The Simpsons wouldn’t make its way to Israel until 2010, where predictable shenanigans ensue: Homer gets hassled by customs for saying

regular pancakes are better than latkes and Bart gets beaten up by a young Krav Maga expert.

The episode, of course, includes an appearance from Krusty himself, seen stuffing pleas into the Western Wall to help pay off his unpaid parking tickets.

He may be the show’s lovable resident Jew, but, as his father tells him in a later episode during a dream in “Jewish heaven,” he’s also kind of a schmuck.

By then, Rabbi Hyman Krustovsky has passed away and Krusty assumes that despite their reconciliation, his dad never really liked his humour.

But Bart drags Krusty to the synagogue of Hyman’s favorite rabbi, who likes to recite some of Krusty’s old jokes.

Turns out, the afterlife vision that featured his deceased father wasn’t true at all, as Krusty adds one more Jewish-influenced joke to the archive: “My father respected me, but could never tell me,” he says. “That’s Jewish heaven!”

Jason’s a glass act Brigit Grant speaks to the chazan-turned-glassblower, who creates beautiful bespoke gifts from his garden workshop

T

here are many things one expects to find in a leafy Mill Hill garden, but a Jewish glassblower isn’t one of them.

Yet it is here, between his neighbours’ conventional plots filled with trampolines, climbing frames and potting sheds, that Jason Blair makes beautiful bespoke glass gifts, under the label Ahava Glass, which is purchased by customers across the globe.

In the age of mass production, there is obvious appeal to a skilled craftsman making every piece by hand, but, to fully appreciate Blair’s talents you have to see him at work.

The furnace is in his workroom, along with all his tools, and that is where the magic happens.

Pipe, stringer, frit and marver are all in the glassblowing glossary for a process that is often a two-man job, or even a team production.

It is the weight of the pipe – more

than 40lbs - that is the issue, as it has to be held up and turned simultaneously for hours, but Blair does it alone and he has the biceps to prove it.

Creating Judaica in colours beyond the rainbow is the focus of his work and his speciality is turning smashed chuppah glass into a keepsake.

“You see, I am also a chazan,” says Blair, who chazan trained as an actor and singer.

“At all the weddings I witnessed, it always troubled me that the glass used under the chuppah was often nothing more than an old lightbulb – yet the ritual itself has so much significance and meaning. So I decided to create something that reflected that.”

Now in place of a 40 watt bulb, Blair offers handblown glass in a silk bag, which, once smashed is sent back to him and then fused into something special for use in a Jewish home, such as a mezuzah or Kiddush cup.

“Or a framed heart,” adds Blair.

That he now sells his ‘Love Glasses’ to Israel is a testament to their appeal and

boxes marked “handle with care” are posted to the US on a weekly basis.

But what made this chazan with a list of stage and TV credits so keen on glassblowing? “It was my grandfather,” Blair explains. “As a child, I was always interested in his workshop in the East End. He was a master craftsman, who put precision and care into every piece he made and I spent many hours sitting at the end of the workbench watching him.”

He grew up loving art and was good at it, but, during a tour of a glass factory in 2012, he persuaded a glassblower to let him have a go and was hooked.

An inspired Blair then went searching for an apprenticeship and found it with Jon Lewis, the resident glassblower at Parndon Mill in Harlow.

Now in his own workshop, he embraces every bespoke commission, including the chance to create a seder plate designed by Year 5 pupils at Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School.

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about… Grenfell Tower?

RABBI JONNY ROODYN At face value, Korach’s initial claims seem to make perfect sense. “They assembled against Moses and Aaron, and said to them: ‘You take too much upon yourselves, for the entire congregation are all holy, and Hashem is in their midst. So why do you raise yourselves above God’s assembly?’” (Numbers 16:3).

But surely we are all holy in our own way; why should some be more equal than others? Perhaps the answer to this lies in the first word of “Vayikach Korach” and “Korach took”.

Korach was driven by selfish gratification at the expense of others. Rashi explains he “took” himself to the other side, others add he “took” with him a small band of people. Korach spoke about popularism, yet acted as an elitist. It’s an example of a dispute of impure motives, “not for the sake of heaven”.

We Jews are happy to voice our views in the knowledge plenty of people will disagree but what matters most is the purity of motive behind such views. This is hard to judge, but essential to discern. That is why Korach’s dispute is recorded as machoket Korach ve’adato, the dispute of Korach and his group, implying his elite was racked with infighting.

Parshat Korach teaches us that whenever a dispute arises over community leadership, or anther endeavour, before reaching conclusions we must carefully examine the claims but also the true motivations behind them. On a personal level, as well, every individual must constantly examine the true motivations behind all their spiritual endeavours.

Even though the crossing of the Red Sea was the deliverance of Israel, God mourned the loss of an entire nation that he had created.

Even though duty-bound to pray for rain at the close of the festival of Succot, the High Priest prayed that the dwellers of mud brick houses should not meet their end in a mudslide, resulting from

the shock of a sudden torrent of rain.

We pray that British leadership on all levels acts quickly and effectively to do all that is necessary to avoid such tragedy and preventable loss of life occurring again.

May the mourning be comforted and the injured healed. Amen.

‘God should arbitrate in disputes to end wickedness’

In a climate of fear, is it right to postpone and cancel events or should we defy the terrorists?

BY RABBI DANNY RICH “You have too much power and prestige for all the community are holy, all of them, and the Eternal is in their midst. Why then do you raise yourselves above God’s congregation?”

So speaks Korach to Moses and Aaron in Numbers 16.

Stunned by the accusation, Moses challenges Korach and his followers by means of a test, whereby God will choose the firepan and incense of either Moses or Korach as the Divine ‘favoured holy one’.

The incident ends when God, at Moses’ request, causes the earth to swallow Korach, other leading rebels, their families and 250 followers.

The rights and wrongs of the miracle of the ‘swallowing earth’ have been discussed at length in rabbinic commentary.

So I wanted to look at a different, equally problematic, angle – which is neither about the nature of his challenge nor his punishment.

The legend of Korach undermines

the Liberal Jewish affirmation of God working in partnership with humanity according to a single set of expectations.

In our understanding, God is not called in to arbitrate in disputes or to end wickedness. If this were a possibility, there should be no wickedness in the world and we would need to explain the absence of miracles in certain circumstances.

More importantly, Liberal Judaism, which seeks to combine the best of Judaism with the best of modernity, is sympathetic to the concept of democracy in which religious and secular leadership is a shared endeavour such that, as the Torah (Exodus 19:6) teaches, it is the responsibility of every Jew to be part of ‘the kingdom of priests and a holy nation’.

Leaders with too much power may undermine such a possibility.

When a terrorist attacks people going about their day-to-day lives, such as at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester or those walking across London Bridge on a night out, he only succeeds if he makes us all afraid.

The purpose of events such as the now postponed Night to Honour Israel, or the Alyth Synagogue Kosher Iftar, which runs for the fifth time hosting more than 100 Muslims and Jews to share Shabbat evening and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan together, is to create bonds and understanding between people and to put our positive values into action.

We can’t allow the fear of

terrorism, or the culture of fear it promotes, to stop us doing these things. If we do, we make terrorism effective. We must run these types of events with due caution; we need to make our premises secure with vigilant security personnel providing the first line of welcome to all while being alert to anything looking out of place.

This is a duty to be shared by all in Britain; it should not be a burden

on a particular community that is potentially targeted, which is why the government supports our Community Security Trust to fund Jewish organisations’ security expenditure.

If there is a specific threat to an event, it should be queried whether it should go ahead, but not if it is possible to secure it. We must not be stopped by fear from putting our values into action. Our Jewish and wider British community events must go ahead if we are not to hand terrorists control over our society.

Jewish communities have had to answer this question down the ages, from the rabbis who taught the banned Torah during the Hadrianic persecutions in Roman times, to those who continued Jewish life in the Soviet Union. James Dear James As you know, until recently landlords could deduct mortgage interest and other financerelated costs from their rental income before calculating their tax liability. For example, if a landlord collected a rental income of £20,000 a year, but paid mortgage interest of £18,000,

Peter Dear Peter Let’s take a very basic invest-

ment, for example a onebedroom flat in Edgware’s Pavilion Way development, off Deansbrook Road, right in between Edgware and Burnt Oak Tube stations.

Two years ago, you would have paid just shy of £195,000 for the property.

Once you had paid stamp duty, solicitors’ fees and maybe made a few home improvements you would have been comfortably in for about £200,000.

That property would have rented out for around £900 to £950 per month so, averaging that out over a two-year period at £925 per month, would make £22,200.

When you take away 20 percent for tax and agents’ fees, this still leaves you

the profit is the difference between the two – £2,000. The landlord would pay tax on profits according to their income tax band.

Over the next three years, this interest relief is being slashed from the current 100 perent to zero and mortgage tax relief will gradually be cut back to 20 percent. The result will be that the amounts of tax owed by some landlords will double or even triple.

Limited companies are not affected by the changes to mortgage interest tax relief.

Therefore some landlords have decided to set up a limited company in which to hold their investments for the long-term. However, it is important to remember that HMRC will treat any transfer of ownership of a property as a sale, so there could be a capital gains tax and stamp duty land tax bill to pay.

To advise you further I’ll need more details, so please contact me to discuss your specific situation and the opportunities you could consider.

Protecting the health of travellers of any age can be complex and varied, including for those with any type of underlying health conditions.

When attending a travel health consultation, a comprehensive risk assessment is completed, enabling the practitioner to understand the health needs of the traveller, whatever their age and wherever the destination of travel.

Some vaccines are recommended for specific destina-

tions, while others transcend borders and can be recommended for almost any destination. Travel vaccines should be administered at least four weeks prior to departure.

Common vaccines, such as tetanus, diphtheria and polio, measles, mumps and rubella are administered routinely as part of the UK national childhood immunisation programme.

Schlepping to school in the name of charity CHARITY More than 150 JCoSS students and staff took part in the biggest ever ‘schlep to school’ to raise funds for Tzedek to support educational projects in Ghana.

Pledging to walk up to 10km instead of taking their usual school coach, the students walked from areas including Enfield, Arkley and Finchley, raising more than £5,000 for charity.

Event organiser Benji Rosenberg from the Informal Jewish education team, said: “It was a massive logistical task, but was worth every moment when 150 students walked up the school drive in the sunshine, singing and chanting and knowing that they had raised over £5,000 for Tzedek.

“We are really proud of the students for their commitment to fundraising and their amazing school spirit.”

More than 65 children from six US shuls took part in Tribe’s annual fivea-side tournament. Community liaison manager Ben Vos said: “This event always attracts lots of youth from across our United Synagogue communities to meet, compete and play some great football together.”

Sela serves up Nottingham title TENNIS Dudi Sela booked his place at this year’s Wimbledon Championships by winning the ATP Aegon Challenger Nottingham Open on Sunday.

His win over Thomas Fabbiano saw him climb 17 places in the rankings – which earns him automatic qualification into the main draw at SW19.

Jonathan Erlich will be the other senior Israeli involved in the tournament, with him taking part in the doubles competition alongside Australian Philipp Oswald.

Israel’s third representative at the tournament, which gets underway on 3 July, will be Yshai Oliel, who is set to compete in the junior boys’ event.

Climbers scale three mountains in 24-hours for charity

CHARITY A group of intrepid adventurers have scaled the three highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours.

The 22 participants, aged from 15 to over 50, climbed Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon as they took part in the first Seed National Three Peaks Challenge.

The climbers, which included a father with his son who had just finished his GCSE exams and the rabbi of the Seed shul in Edgware, Dov Birnbaum, were met at the summit of the final peak – Mount Snowdon – by Seed

national director Rabbi Joey Grunfeld.

Rabbi Birnbaum said: “This has been the maddest 24 hours of my life. It has been brilliant – we’ve made it, and we’ve done it all together.”

The group have so far raised more than £30,000 for the charity, which provides adult and family Jewish education across the UK through formal study and informal experiences.

Langdon get on their bikes CYCLING A team of 32 cyclists raised more than £82,000 when they took part in the 2017 annual Langdon cycle challenge. Beginning the fourday event, which started in Vienna and ended in Prague, money raised went to Langdon’s social enterprise New Chapters.

One of four teams to win a title over the season, Josh Woolf won the Junior Sportsman of the year award, having scored 66 goals, including 49 in the league goals from 18 games, which made him the top scorer in the WFL.
