EXCLUSIVE: Police handed shocking dossier of antisemitic abuse from British extremists By Jenni Frazer jenni@jennifrazer.com @JewishNewsUK

A report exposing the ferocity of online threats to the Jewish community from British extremists has been handed to Scotland Yard, Jewish News can reveal. Chilling evidence of antisemites, Islamophobes and would-be terrorists operating nationwide was given to senior officers yesterday by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre. The centre’s Rabbi Abraham Cooper, who delivered the Digital Terrorism and Hate Report to police, this week warned of

the rising volume of UK “online chatter” in the wake of terror attacks in Pittsburgh and New Zealand. Every year the centre publishes its “report card” assessing online hate speech and grades the performance of companies such as Facebook and Twitter in dealing with the phenomenon on their platforms. Among British extremists identified by the Wiesenthal Centre in the report are activists such as Andrew Carrington Hitchcock, who runs a radio show called Eurofolk Radio promoting antisemitism and white nationalism; the British Renaissance Policy Institute (BRPI), founded in

2014 by Jack Sen, a parliamentary candidate for UKIP in 2015 who was suspended for tweeting comments that were deemed antisemitic; the European Knights Project (EKP), a far-right, virulently racist and antisemitic extreme nationalist organisation, also run by Jack Sen; NS131 (AntiCapitalist Action), a group of British neoNazi street artists who spread their ideology through their art. Its website contains a series of tutorials for street artists, including information on security and guides to being searched and arrested; Aryan Revolution, a Twitter account for a National Socialist Union that

idolises Adolf Hitler and the Nazis; and well-known far-right activists such as Lady Renouf, who now runs the website Jewish Republic, among whose claims are that the “brand name packaging of ‘Holocaust’” has been “deployed to conjure a legitimacy” for the state of Israel. Cooper told Jewish News: “Facebook’s main revenue stream is through adverts. They buy smaller companies and get them to run the advertising division. We discovered that neo-Nazis were using these adverts to market directly to the kind of demographics they were interested in.” Continued on page 8

a month of rising violence, after a rocket fired from the strip flew 75 miles and hit a house near Tel Aviv, injuring seven family members. Israel retaliated with airstrikes, destroying terrorist buildings and infrastructure. It has long been known that Israeli agencies recruit Palestinians to report on – and disrupt – terror operations against Israel, but news that the families of 17 one-time Gazan collaborators now live and work in Sderot is nevertheless striking. All those who worked with Israel were brought out of the

Gaza Strip when it withdrew from the area in 2005, and the men and their families were sent to a number of Israeli towns, including Netivot, Ashkelon, and Ashdod. Everyone in Sderot was aware of the situation, Dr Bouskila maintained. “These people were brought out of Gaza and initially the IDF rented housing for them, but today the government pays for them.” He added: “They don’t have Israeli citizenship – their status is between citizenship and a local licence – but they have the same rights as we do, in welfare and education.” Dr Bouskila said Sderot residents were “very comfortable” with the presence of the Gazans. “They helped Israel fight against terrorists in Gaza,” he said. He was unaware of any more recent arrivals from the Gaza Strip, but believed that many places in Israel were now new homes for the men who had — often at great risk — co-operated with Israel. “Now they feel safe,” he declared.

The former mayor of an Israeli town near the Gaza border has revealed that it is also home to the families of 17 Palestinian collaborators – and the locals are absolutely fine with it, writes Jenni Frazer. Speaking to Jewish News during a recent visit to Sderot, the Negev town that takes the brunt of rocket attacks from Gaza, the former mayor revealed that collaborators who once lived in Gaza have now made their home here. The collaborators – Israel’s eyes and ears in the Strip – were later extracted, said former mayor Dr David Bouskila, and both Sderot residents and the ex-collaborators are more than comfortable with the situation. “They use the same names as they had in Gaza,” he said. “They work in our factories. Their children go to the same schools as our children. They feel part of the community.” At least one family is Dr Bouskila’s neighbour, he added. The startling revelation follows

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt this week condemned Donald Trump’s recognition of the Golan Heights as Israeli territory. Answering questions in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Hunt did not shy away in criticising the White House for breaking the post-war international consensus for not recognising sovereignty over land seized during war. Hunt made British policy clear in response to a question from Conservative MP Sir Nicholas Soames. He said Trump’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan was illegal because “annexation of territory is prohibited under international

law” and asked Hunt to “condemn unreservedly this breach of the rules-based order”. Hunt said he was “absolutely happy to do that,” adding: “We should never recognise the annexation of territory by force… that has been one of the great achievements since the founding of the United Nations.” The foreign secretary said he condemned Trump’s actions “with a heavy heart” because Israel was also “an ally and a shining example of democracy in a part of the world where that is not common… We want Israel to be a success and consider them to be a great friend, but on this we do not agree.”

Netanyahu accused of being ‘chief troll’ The former IDF Chief of Staff challenging Benjamin Netanyahu in next week’s Israeli election has accused the prime minister of waging “a campaign of terror on Israelis’ consciousness” and creating “fake news”. Benny Gantz, who jointly leads the Blue and White Party with Yair Lapid, was responding to a report detailing how senior officials in Netanyahu’s Likud had set up fake Twitter accounts to support Netanyahu’s re-election bid. Written by Noam Rotem and Yuval Adam, who founded the Big Bots Project, the report says: “On peak days, the network writes thousands of posts every day on behalf of Netanyahu and the Likud.” Rotem and Adam said: “One can clearly see that it was massively ‘operated’ after the election was called, and its

News / Labour antisemitism NEWS IN BRIEF

LANSMAN STANDS BY CORBYN AIDE Jon Lansman has defended a top adviser to Jeremy Corbyn accused of blocking a ban on since-suspended member Patricia Sheerin, who was arrested for inciting racial hatred last week. Momentum founder Lansman criticised an article in The Sunday Times for reporting that Laura Murray blocked the suspension of Sheerin, despite recommendations by party officials. Lansman wrote Murray had “done more than anyone I know to tackle antisemitism in the party”.

LIVINGSTONE: IT’S LIES AND SMEARS Former London mayor Ken Livingstone has reignited Labour’s Jewhate row by branding it “lies and smears” pushed by “ghastly Blairites”. According to the Mail On Sunday, he told a meeting of the pro-Corbyn Labour against the Witchhunt he had been victimised by “the elite” trying to stop Corbyn becoming Prime Minister. Livingstone added: “The elite will do everything to stop Jeremy getting into Government, because they look at John McDonnell and think that bugger’s going to stop all our tax dodging in the Cayman Islands.”

Watson urges JLM to keep faith with party Tom Watson this week urged the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) to remain tied to the party – as its national secretary warned the body may still disaffiliate. The opposition’s deputy leader made his remarks in a foreword for a pamphlet covering ‘A brief history of 99 years of affiliation to the Labour Party’, published by JLM ahead of its centenary and Sunday’s annual general meeting – and published right. Entitled ‘Solidarity and Discord’ and put together by Derek Taylor, the pamphlet features Jeremy Corbyn’s second-in-command, who reflects on the struggles faced by members of the community in recent years. In the foreword, Watson criticises the party’s “processes” used to tackle antisemitism cases which “simply haven’t worked”, as he insists he “will continue to monitor and press for action on antisemitism within the Labour Party for as long as it takes for it to be adequately dealt with”. This comes after Watson was rebuked by the party’s general secretary Jennie Formby after he sent an email to Labour MPs and peers, asking for all complaints of abuse to be shared with him. Formby criticised him for reportedly breaching data laws. As well as pressing the case for stronger action on Jew-hate, Watson said he hopes

“JLM will remain affiliated to the Labour Party and continue to work with me in the pursuit of a more just world for us all.” Watson’s comments come after JLM held an emergency general meeting last month, in which members voted not to sever ties with the party. Following the vote, a series of leadership bids were launched to unseat chair Ivor Caplin, including from candidates supporting disaffiliation. Speaking of the “culture of antisemitism, obfuscation and denial” which “grips” the party, Peter Mason, the JLM’s National Secretary, issued a warning that cutting ties to Labour may yet happen, writing in the Jewish News this week.  Peter Mason, page 22

CORBYN: ‘CONFRONT THE ZIONIST LOBBY’

Visiting Israel?

Leket Israel offers a fun and meaningful activity for the whole family.

An article believed to have been written by Jeremy Corbyn calls on “Western governments” to confront “the Zionist lobby” following the arrest of controversial cleric Raed Salah. It appeared in the Morning Star on 1 July 2011, after the leader of the Islamic Movement was arrested and detained for entering Britain despite a travel ban. “[Raed Salah] wishes to remain here long enough to fight for his name,” it says. “The sadness is that his is a voice of Palestinian people that needs to be heard. It’s time Western governments stood up to the Zionist lobby.”

A Labour mayor has resigned from the party, claiming it has become the “nasty party” and is “marching towards fascism at a steady pace”. Mayor of Hartlepool Allan Barclay wrote on Tuesday that he was resigning from the Labour Party with immediate effect and said it had become a “party of antisemites, racists and homophobes”. The 65-year-old said he had first become involved with Labour aged 14, but said he felt the party was now “unrecognisable” from when he joined and had been “infiltrated” by people who did not hold Labour values.

The Labour Party has a long and proud history of solidarity with British Jews. It helped found the party and, as one of our oldest socialist societies, has always been at the heart of our movement. From its proud roots as Poale Zion to the revived and reinvigorated membership organisation of over 2,000 people, the Jewish Labour Movement has gone from strength to strength over this past century. I’ve been a supporter of your work for many years, and it’s a little known fact that when I was a young political organiser in the Engineering and Electrical Union, one of my favourite tasks was to print the Poale Zion newsletter under the watchful supervision of Lawrie Nerva. I know that the last few years have not been a happy time. As a party we have been too slow to respond to the growing incidences of antisemitism in the party and the reforms and processes the party has introduced to attempt to deal with antisemitism simply haven’t worked. I have said before that the increase in antisemitism in the Labour Party is a crisis of the soul for us, a crisis that if not dealt with will lead to the Labour Party disappearing into a vortex of eternal shame and embarrassment. I cannot put it any more strongly than this. As deputy leader I can only promise members of the Jewish Labour Movement that you

have my full solidarity and support and that I will continue to monitor and press for action on antisemitism within the Labour Party for as long as it takes for it to be adequately dealt with. I firmly believe that there will always be a special bond between the Jewish community and the Labour Party, based on the shared values and ideology which are encapsulated best by the concept of tikkun olam, which reminds us all of our obligation to pursue social justice and work for the good of society. I will remain mindful of tikkun olam in my ongoing responsibility to support the Jewish community in the years ahead and I hope that JLM will remain affiliated to the Labour Party and continue to work with me in the pursuit of a more just world for us all. As you read this pamphlet I hope you will see it as a proud reminder of JLM’s achievements within the Labour movement, but also as a catalyst to continue to build and strengthen JLM for the challenges ahead which I hope we will face together, united by our shared values and our proud joint history.  This column will be published in a special pamphlet marking the Jewish Labour Movement’s 100-year affiliation to the Labour Party

HUNDREDS JOIN JLM AFTER BROWN VIDEO Jewish News understands that hundreds of people joined the Jewish Labour Movement in the 24 hours after Gordon Brown joined as an affiliate member. The former prime minister appeared in a threeminute clip by anti-racism charity Hope Not Hate, which received nearly one million views, released on Monday. In the video shot at Liverpool Street Station, Brown reflects on the rise of antisemitism and abuse and called on others to join JLM. “The message to the Jewish community should be clear and unequivocal. “You will never walk alone

and we will never walk on by on the other side. We must never tolerate intolerance. “Solidarity means standing up with those who are under attack and that is why I am joining as an affiliated member. I urge all my colleagues to do the same.”

JLM member selected for Finchley & Golders Green A member of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) has been chosen to represent Labour in the marginal seat of Finchley and Golders Green at the next general election. Sara Conway will face Tory incumbent MP Mike Freer, who has held his seat despite challenges from Alison Moore, Sarah Sackman and Jeremy Newmark. The Barnet Borough councillor, who backs a People’s Vote on Brexit, has pledged to

be a “strong voice” on leaving the EU and antisemitism. “On antisemitism, I have been a consistent and solid voice for dialogue, empathy and education, but also for a party where we are clear that it is not acceptable,” she said. She added: “I will never be afraid to have the tough conversations that need to be had.” Conway said she would be working hard to “reverse Tory austerity”, having observed

in her role the impact of austerity on local services. “I have a real understanding of our local communities from regular campaigning in Finchley and Golders Green over the past

David Pinto-Duschinsky added that antisemitism in the party “breaks my heart”, A management consultant, he is no stranger to the inner workings of Whitehall, having served as a special adviser to Chancellor Alistair Darling. In Hendon, he is working to familiarise himself with the area, whose current Tory MP Matthew Offord has a majority of just over 1,000 votes. The candidate’s father is the academic Michael PintoDuschinsky, born in Ukraine in 1943 and a veteran campaigner on behalf of Jewish slave labourers under the Nazis. Pinto-Duschinsky senior came to Britain with his mother as a child after the war, and, adopted by distant relatives who were Sephardi, took on the “Pinto” part of his name.

Corbyn meeting off A meeting between Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and members of the Stamford Hill community will not take place, Labour sources have confirmed. It was reported yesterday that a meeting organised by Charedi activist Shraga Stern would take place at the home of Rabbi Herschel Gluck, who is president of the Shomrim in Stamford Hill. However, Rabbi Gluck told Jewish News the visit was not due to take place at his house.

Jewish News understands that the meeting was never confirmed on the Labour side. Stern was at the centre of controversy only last month when he branded rabbi Avraham Pinter a “kapo” in an email sent to hundreds of Charedi residents about education and the teaching of alternative sexualities and gender identities. The term refers to Jews who forced other Jews to work for their Nazi captors.

Minister reiterates support for Westminster memorial The communities secretary this week reiterated his commitment to building a National Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre next to Parliament, as objections from heritage groups mount up, writes Mathilde Frot. James Brokenshire, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, spoke after a visit to Jewish Care’s Wohl Court, with local MP Matthew Offord and Lord Levy present. The visit was followed by a round-table discussion with survivors and volunteers at the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre in Hendon. Brokenshire said he was not envisaging a refusal from Westminster Council’s planning committee, despite concerns from Historic England, Royal Parks and an adviser to Unesco’s World Heritage Committee. “I

James Brokenshire speaks to a tenant at Wohl Court

am not contemplating that refusal,” he said. “We are working with council planners to go through some of the technical issues to respond to some of the concerns and challenge back where there are these misconceptions about what the site is and what it isn’t.” Brokenshire added:

“Having it located slap-bang next door the House of Commons underlines that sense of connection, the role of government and how we must not just reflect but also learn and apply the lessons of the Holocaust. This is something for our nation.” He also spoke about his wife’s family and their connection to the Holocaust,

telling survivors and volunteers: “There is a personal connection for as to why this really matters, why I am so personally determined. “My father-in-law was assisted out of Germany at the time of the Second World War by MI6 agent Frank Foley, who helped tens of thousands of Jews escape from Germany around Kristallnacht.“ London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also voiced “deep concerns” that proposals submitted to Westminster Council to build the centre in Victoria Tower Gardens would be rejected. More than 170 peers and MPs have signed a letter to the planning committee in support of the proposal. Signatories include Labour’s Emily Thornberry, Yvette Cooper, Barry Gardiner and Lord Dubs and Conservatives Dominic Raab, Nicky Morgan and Robert Halfon.

Labour’s top brass set for Jewdas seder Notorious left-wing Jewish group Jewdas claims two members of the Labour front bench have accepted invitations to attend its seder this year. The iconoclasts, who rose to fame after Jeremy Corbyn broke matzah at the group’s Passover meal last year, relish provoking the mainstream Jewish community. Asked whether Corbyn or other senior Labour figures would attend later this month, Jewdas claimed: “We have confirmed RSVPs from members of the shadow cabinet, but because of the unwanted attention last year

we’ve had to really tighten up security for this year’s seder”. Corbyn was roundly criticised by communal bodies for his attendance at the event. Corbyn defended his presence as being in a “personal capacity”. He said it was “a celebration of Passover, which I celebrate with young Jewish people from my own community and constituency”. He added: “It was very interesting talking to a lot of young people about their experiences of modern Britain and I learned a lot. Isn’t that a good thing?”

LABOUR REPLY TO EHRC Labour this week responded to antisemitism claims in the party after it was granted a week-long extension by the Equality and Human Right Commission (EHRC). The equalities watchdog will now consider Labour’s response and determine

whether to launch a formal human rights investigation. If such an investigation is opened, the commission could compel the party to reveal details of its handling of cases, including through internal communications such as emails and texts.

Jake’s family, who live in Borehamwood, are raising money for experimental treatment in the US in case their son does not respond to treatment. Sunday night’s event has pushed the total raised to £140,000. Arron hosted the event, which included performances from Cally Beaton, Josh Howie and Simon Brodkin, while Lucas presented a prize draw. “It was an amazing night, planned entirely by a group of wonderful ladies from our school community,” said Jake’s mother, Hannah. “We raised £10,550, which was incredible. Our campaign is going really well and there are many other events taking place in the coming months to

Survival rates for relapsed neuroblastoma are around 10 percent. After several rounds of chemotherapy, Jake’s cancer has still not been

Continued from page 1 Cooper said his report had downgraded Facebook for the way in which it had been handling hate speech online. “Its response has been that it is an American company and freedom of speech is the basic component of that,” he said. Although Facebook and Twitter had become “increasingly aggressive in identifying dangerous content, removing it from their platforms, and banning certain offenders”, Cooper charged that “in recent years they have become more permissive of

dangerous ads and less proactive in addressing hate”. He said: “The Simon Wiesenthal Centre social media report card proves that social media giants can and must do more to degrade the capabilities of racists, antisemites and terrorists. “The idea of online hate and terror posing a danger is not an abstraction. We’ve seen the impact of foreign terrorist groups who use the internet to spread their hate and organise”. Cooper added: “Platforms are coming online

with extreme frequency and are colonised by ‘Alt-Tech’. They encompass everything from interactive profiles and micro-blogging to chat and popular video games like Fortnite and gaming platforms like Steam, where bigots demean the memory of the Holocaust and celebrate Nazi symbols.” Cooper, who said he deplored “a lack of political will to hold people accountable for their hatred”, added that Twitter had only “woken up” in recent years when it was point-ed out that Isis was posting 200,000 tweets a day.

News / Begum lawyer / Rabbinic roles / Simcha scare

Liberals host ‘Isis like Israel’ lawyer Liberal Judaism has refused to rescind an invitation to Shamima Begum’s lawyer, who drew parallels between Israel and Islamic State. Tasnime Akunjee told New Statesman editor-in-chief Jason Cowley last week that “Isis copied their model directly from Israel”. He added: “You have Israel calling on Jews from around the world… they have an automatic right to be a citizen of Israel. “That’s exactly the same as Isis, in the sense that if you’re Muslim and you come over here, you’ll be looked after.” Akunjee is due to speak today at a Liberal Judaism panel event about citizenship and privilege, chaired by Charlotte Fischer from Citizens UK. Rabbi Danny Rich, senior rabbi of Liberal Judaism, defended his decision not to withdraw the invitation, saying: “Liberal Judaism is not in the habit of rescinding invitations to speakers.

“Liberal Judaism welcomes robust debate and indeed the Hot Potatoes series does just that. Please do come along and take part in the discussion on Thursday 4 April.” Cowley apologised following his interview with the lawyer. He wrote on social media: “The headline on the interview with Shamima Begum’s solicitor in the Observations section of this week’s magazine has been changed. We apologise for any offence it caused and for what was an error of editorial judgement.” However, Akunjee himself followed up in a statement to Jewish News, saying: “The article in the New Statesman truncated statements made during an

AJR TO ‘SHED LIGHT’ ON KINDERS’ PLIGHT

WEST END TEVYE’S THEATRE MEZUZAH

A two-day event in London later this month will “shed light on lesser known strands of the history of the Kindertransport” as experts descend on the capital to consider the pre-war rescue effort. Supported by the German and Austrian embassies, the forum at Lancaster House on 15-16 April is the brainchild of the Association of Jewish Refugees and the UK Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust Issues, Lord Eric Pickles. AJR chief executive Michael Newman said he hoped that members of the Jewish community would come along “to remember and rethink the legacy of the UK’s policy [towards the kinder]”.

Jewish actor Andy Nyman was given a mezuzah for his changing room door, as he began playing Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof in the West End. Rabbi Dov Cowan of the Jewish Learning Exchange in Golders Green was on hand to make sure Tevye got his mezuzah at the Playhouse Theatre in London’s West End, which began its three-month run last week. Nyman asked the play’s production team for a mezuzah for his dressing room door “to make it complete” and Rabbi Cowan of the JLE, who teaches production assistant Aimee Belchak, arrived with the sacred scroll during a break in rehearsals, helping Nyman to make the blessing.

Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue members will soon have an opportunity to vote in Rabbi Alex Chapper as their new senior minister, according to a news report. Chapper, pictured, would replace Rabbi Chaim Kanterovitz, who resigned in November following a sudden month of annual leave, according to a report in the Jewish Chronicle. Chapper’s appointment is subject to the approval of synagogue members in a vote set for 11 April. BES chair Simon Mitchell praised Rabbi Chapper’s “long-standing experience as the main rabbi in his previous communities”, including Ilford Federation. In a message to mem-

bers, Mitchell said: “Of course, Rabbi Chapper is no stranger to us, and through his hard work and diligence has already proven to be a strong leader for our community. “During the selection interview process, Rabbi Chapper has laid out an exciting and innovative vision for our community, demonstrating an astute understanding of where we are today and what we need to develop. “With his trademark kindness and empathy, his drive, determination, professionalism and humility, and his ability to relate Torah values to our everyday lives, I feel confident this is the start of an amazing era for our community.”

CEILING COLLAPSE Barnet shul appoints AT HOTEL WEDDING new rabbinic couple Around 500 guests escaped unharmed from Sheraton Grand London Park Lane after a plaster ceiling collapsed during a Jewish wedding last weekend. Emergency services confirmed they received no reports of any injuries. Four fire engines and around 30 firefighters were called to the hotel at around 4.30pm on Sunday and remained on site until 7.45pm, according to the London Fire Brigade. The incident, believed to have been caused by a water leak, took place in the Silver Gallery in the ground floor

lobby, which has been closed. A hotel spokesperson said: “The Silver Gallery remains closed while repair work takes place. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.” A Met Police spokesperson said: “No one was trapped and there were no reported casualties. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.” The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, which opened in 1927 as the Park Lane Hotel, joined the premier tier of the Sheraton brand, following the completion of a multi-million pound renovation project.

Climate activism / Sex education / News

The teen climate champion Most parents would not be thrilled about their 17-year-old skipping school. But Noga Levy-Rapoport isn’t any ordinary teenager, writes Mathilde Frot. She is helping to lead the UK Student Climate Network, a growing youth protest movement against climate change – and says her parents could not be more supportive. Levy-Rapoport, who is currently studying for her A-Levels at the Arts Educational School in Chiswick, was among thousands of students to gather in Westminster as part of global action against climate change in February and March. Since joining the movement in February initially as a protester, then as a core organiser, Levy-Rapoport has received media and legal training on activism. “I am also lucky enough to have the full support of my parents and my school who will make sure I catch up and I am also aware that I have a responsibility to do that,” Levy-Rapoport says. “It does get quite stressful,” Levy-Rapoport adds, “But I know it will be worth it.” Warning last month in an op-ed in The Guardian that the effects of climate change are “irreversible”, she has called on the government to tackle air pollution and switch to renewable energy to make the economy more sustainable. Her involvement has drawn media attention,

and she told LBC’s Nick Ferrari: “I can’t prioritise my education above survival.” The walkouts, which have taken place across the UK in Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter and Leicester, are inspired by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, who was recently nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. “I heard about Greta and thought it was brilliant and that it had never been done before,” Levy-Rapoport says. In addition to Thunberg, Levy-Rapoport also counts US congresswoman Alexandria OcasioCortez and British Green Party MP Caroline Lucas among her influences. Levy-Rapoport says she “100 percent” supports Ocasio-Cortez, describing the US parliamentarian as “one of the most powerful and important figures of our time”. In terms of climate change policy, LevyRapoport says she would like to see a Green New Deal implemented in the UK. The proposal, spearheaded by Ocasio-Cortez, plans to achieve 100 percent renewable energy within 10 years, while increasing jobs and lessening inequality through a job guarantee programme. For now, however, there is still a long way to go, and the Jewish community, she says, has a lot to offer the growing movement. Levy-Rapoport said: “The Jewish community in London is, from my own experi-

ence, a very tight-knit one, and a hugely supportive one. This is an incredible advantage in helping to tackle the climate crisis as a community. We can support each other in amending our lifestyles and going on strike together.” But the teen, who aspires

to become an opera singer, has much to look forward to beyond her activism. “When I was 11,” she says, “I discovered I really loved performing classical and choral music and, combining that with my passion for theatre, I realised opera is my greatest dream.”

The umbrella body for Jewish education in the UK has told Jewish schools to adopt the government’s new Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) guidelines, leaving opponents of the Bill increasingly isolated. In a guidance document sent to schools yesterday, Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS) advised all Jewish schools – including the strictly Orthodox – to teach children about LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual plus) relationships. “Faith schools are able to teach about sexual relationships, including LGBT+ relationships, from a faith perspective,” said PaJeS. “They should, however, also teach students that UK law allows for all types of relationships and must teach the importance of showing tolerance

and respect for all.” PaJeS, which is part of the Jewish Leadership Council, advised schools comfortable with teaching Judaism’s view towards sex and relationships “to adopt this route to teach LGBT+ relationships, which can be covered as part of Jewish Studies”. For schools not comfortable delivering the curriculum in this way, PaJeS said: “Lessons promoting tolerance must be incorporated within the school’s curriculum.” It added students could be introduced to the concept of samesex relationships “tangentially” such as when teaching Jewish sources, for example in Parshat Acharei Mot, or when teaching Holocaust education and the persecuted groups. The guidance is a blow to individual

Charedi campaigners still hoping to overturn the government’s new Relationship and Sex Education Bill, which was being debated in the House of Lords yesterday. The government’s inclusion of a parental opt-out from sex education in secondary school until three terms before the child turns 16 has been

quietly welcomed in many corners of the Charedi community. This week PaJeS sought to reassure schools there is no requirement to teach sex education at primary school but said “schools may wish to do so”. At secondary school, PaJeS said that while parents can opt to withdraw their child from sex education, “it is good practice to include the student in this decision”. But some Orthodox Jewish campaigners still wish to see the RSE bill defeated, including a new group called The Values Foundation for Faith and Families in Education, which launched at Parliament on Monday. It is led by Judith Nemeth, a former director of the now-defunct National Association of Orthodox Jewish Schools.  Editorial comment, p20

NEO-NAZI FACES LIFE IN JAIL A 23-year-old neo-Nazi who urged the killing of all Jews now faces life behind bars for plotting to kill his local MP and a female police officer. Jack Renshaw, from Lancashire, was this week also revealed to be a convicted paedophile who groomed two young boys online, after reporting restrictions were lifted following his fourth trial in two years. Renshaw has long been on the Jewish community’s radar. OLDHAM LAWYER DENIES SHOAH SLUR

A solicitor in Oldham has denied saying it was “sad” that people could not question the Holocaust on Holocaust Memorial Day. Paul Johnson of Johnson’s Solicitors told Jewish News that his comments on 27 January had been “misinterpreted” after he posted in response to an article showing how one in 20 Britons did not believe the Holocaust took place. He tweeted: “This is sad, but not surprising, when people feel they can’t question the Holocaust openly without fear of being accused of Holocaust Denial and Antisemitism. Lies and conspiracy theories thrive on censorship.” Jewish News was alerted to the tweet by a reader, who asked to remain anonymous, and Johnson said he was “very sorry” for any upset, adding: “I had no intention of offending anyone.”

New group aims to hit fake news A small group of friends backed by Countdown star Rachel Riley is targeting hyperpartisan news websites by hitting their revenue. The campaign, called Stop Funding Fake News, combats platforms such as The Rebel Media, Westmonster, The Canary, Politicalite and Evolve Politics through their advertisers. “Fake news bears much responsibility for the growth in illiberalism, woman-hate, Jew-hate, Muslim-hate, trans-hate and political sectarianism in Britain,” activists told Jewish News. Organisers say the campaign was inspired by Sleeping Giants in the US, which persuaded brands not to advertise on Breitbart, a website set up by former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and accused of stoking division through disinformation.

Countdown star Rachel Riley

“Several websites in the UK have copied the Breitbart model, funding their output with advertising revenue,” the group said. “These so-called programmatic adverts are placed automatically without the advertiser’s knowledge, so big brands are unwittingly financing hateful propaganda.” To stop an advert from appearing on a website, advertisers need only add the web address of the website to a dedicated page in their AdWords account. “We just

show advertisers where their money is being spent and let them make a decision as to whether to continue to do so,” the group said. Stop Funding Fake News claims it has seen some success, with brands such as Sky, eBay, World Wide Fund for Nature, Which?, Experian and Macmillan Cancer Care. Riley, who promoted the group’s numerous appeals on her timeline, described it as a “campaign aimed at making it less profitable to spread hate, racism, misogyny, antisemitism, Islamophobia and their bedmates”. Last week it persuaded Macmillan Cancer Care to pull an advert from The Canary. To get involved, you can donate by searching for “Stop Funding Fake News” on www.GoFundMe.com or directly petitioning brands on social media.

UBER DRIVER: ‘I DON’T TAKE JEWS’

Uber has reportedly suspended a driver after two men claimed he cancelled a journey, after saying “I don’t take Jews”, writes Mathilde Frot. Sam Adler, told Jewish News he was with his business partner in Wembley High Street, when he ordered an Uber back to his office on Monday afternoon. “The guy dropped off his passenger and turned the car around and said ‘I don’t take Jews’ and then sped off,” Adler said. The 30-year-old, who wears a kippah, says he was

“shocked” by the experience and reported the incident to the online taxi cab service, which reportedly blocked the driver from using the app that enables drivers to interact with passengers. The company has also contacted the Metropolitan Police. Adler said he has been in touch with a solicitor and is hoping to receive compensation from the app. In a statement, an Uber spokesperson said “what has been described is totally unacceptable”, adding: “Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination.”

Scottish hero saved Jews A Scottish woman saved many Jews from the Holocaust by helping them to emigrate to the UK, a new book has revealed. Jane Haining (pictured) assisted Hungarian women in securing jobs as domestic servants before she was taken to Auschwitz, where she died in 1944. Jane Haining – A Life of Love and Courage by Mary Miller reflects the “ordinary, yet extraordinary” life of the woman from Dunscore, Dumfries and Galloway, and casts fresh light on her work at the school from 1932 until her death. In it, Miller writes: “Jewish refugees from countries swallowed up by the Nazis were pouring into Budapest, still believing the situation of Jews to be less life-threatening in Hungary than in the surrounding

countries. They believed… the only way to save the Jews was through emigration, and by February 1939 the Mission was putting on courses in farming, cattle breeding and other subjects to help refugees to get jobs abroad. “Jane Haining taught domestic management and gave lectures on social life in

Britain. [Rev] George Knight commented that Jane Haining was an able teacher, many a housewife in Britain can testify who received into her home a refugee domestic servant from Hungary.” She refused to return home after war broke out 1939, and insisted the Jewish and Christian girls in her care needed her in the “days of darkness”. After being arrested by the Gestapo in April 1944, she never returned to the Scottish Mission and died at the camp – branded prisoner 79467 – aged 47. She is officially recognised at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Israel, and received a British Hero of Holocaust medal from the UK Government.

ISRAEL ACCUSED IN AIRSTRIKE DEATHS Israel has been accused of airstrikes on ammunition depots near Aleppo International Airport in Syria that are reported to have killed seven members of the Iranian armed forces. Israel refused comment on the claims by the Syrian army and a watchdog group. The Iranians killed may have been guarding the depots.

The Syrian army said in a statement that the strikes caused only material damage in an industrial zone in Aleppo. The official Syrian news agency Sana reported that the Syrian military had intercepted most of the Israeli missiles. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported [N]

Surprisingly, the latest polls suggest most Israelis think Benjamin Netanyahu is too weak on Hamas in Gaza. Despite this, a Channel 13 poll shows 51 percent still want him to lead the country. This compares to just 36 percent for his main rival, former Israel Defence Forces Chief of Staff Benny Gantz. Netanyahu’s party, the right-wing Likud, is currently neck and neck with Gantz’s party, Blue and White, according to the Channel 13 poll (predicting 30 seats each). However, Likud is expected to form the next government. That’s because more parties are saying they will recommend Netanyahu for prime minister to Rivlin. Likud Knesset member Sharren Haskell explains: “Likud stands for security and the economy. People want strong security, but also less regulation, lower taxes and a free market. Israel faces violence from Gaza, Syria and Hezbollah, as well as a nest of terror in Egypt. We must be responsible and firm in our response, and we are managing the situation as it happens.”

ISRAEL’S NEW CENTRIST PARTY

daughter of well-known Canadian former minister, Israel supporter and human rights legal expert, Irwin Cotler. “Despite the divisive internal discourse we’ve seen in Israel recently, we have been able to agree a platform of principles that all – from the responsible right to the Zionist left – can agree on. The government needs to stop paying protection money to Hamas, and use international law to protect Israel,” she explained.

Kachol Lavan (Blue and White) disagrees. This is the new centrist list set up by Gantz, who joined with Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid, Moshe Ya’alon’s Telem, and another former IDF chief of staff, Gabi Ashkenazi, to maximise their chance of beating Netanyahu. “Blue and White brings together different opinions and 120 years of military experience at the helm of the party,” Benny Gantz said candidate Michal Cotler,

LEFT IS BEST?

For voters on the left, HaAvoda (Labor) is currently the second biggest faction in the Knesset, with 18 seats. Led by Avi Gabbai, the party describes itself as ‘social democrat and Zionist’ but is predicted to win just 10 seats in the forthcoming election. Further to the left is Meretz, led by Tamar Zandberg, with five seats in the current Knesset. Meretz representative and life partner of Zandberg, Uri Zaki, outlined the party’s vision. “Meretz’s election ad features a leader I admire, Menachem Begin, and a leader I love, Tamar Zandberg. The essence of both of their leadership is a strong commitment to democracy. “Begin was brave enough to make peace with Egypt, then Israel’s greatest enemy, evacuating all settlements there. Netanyahu isn’t a warmonger – he’s acting responsibly and is in fact an ally of Hamas. But he’s managing the conflict instead of solving it. We believe the way to solve it is through political agreement with Ramallah… Begin’s way.” Even further to the left are the Arab parties. The Joint Arab List is currently the third largest group in the Knesset. The Arab Israeli Hadash-Ta’al party is predicted to win seven seats in the next Knesset, with Ra’am-Balad Yair Lapid expected to win four seats.

A LOOK TO THE RIGHT

Some political analysts argue that the left simply don’t have enough votes to form the next government. That’s why HaYamin HaChadash (or New Right) – set up by former Bayit Yehudi leader and current Education Minister Naftali Bennett and Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked – say voters on the right shouldn’t worry about voting for Likud, but should back them instead. “A vote for us is actually like voting twice, because it’s a vote for us and for Netanyahu... we will recommend Netanyahu as the next prime minister,” explains veteran political commentator and HaYamin HaChadash candidate Caroline Glick. “HaYamin HaChadash is going to make sure Likud governs from the right. We believe there needs to be accountability in the justice system, and we won’t agree to a Palestinian state to the west of the Jordan.” There has been much controversy over the inclusion of the Kahanist party Otzma Yehudit into the new Union of Right Wing Parties. Led by Rafi Peretz, the group also includes Bayit Yehudi and HaIchud HaLeumi. The move to include Otzma Yehudit was encouraged by Netanyahu to ensure the group passes the minimum threshold of 3.25 percent to enter parliament. Likud’s Haskell explained the move. “A true democracy listens to its voters. If Israel didn’t

Election 2019 / Israel decides vote for this party, then they wouldn’t be in the Knesset. I disagree with a lot of their views, but I am far more scared of the left having more mandates. The left will join with the Arab parties whose ideology is anti-Israel.” Regarding the Union of Right Wing Parties’ platform, Orli Rapaport from Bayit Yehudi said they believe that “to defeat terror we must not surrender to it”. She added: “We must fight back hard. We need to show our enemies we are not going away.”

Blue and White’s Cotler said: “We are the only party to have published a clear platform. This says that Jerusalem must be the united, eternal capital of Israel.” Meanwhile, Zaki from Meretz said: “There won’t be a serious peace plan that could work that doesn’t include a division of Jerusalem, but with access for all. The Temple Mount, Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre should have a special status.”

Like Margaret Thatcher once famously talked of ‘education, education, education’ being her primary focus, the key issue on most Israeli voters’ minds is security, security, security. So where do the parties stand on Trump’s ‘deal of the century’, which is expected to be launched after the election? Unsurprisingly, Union of Right Wing Parties’ Rapaport said: “We would not give up one inch of Israel.” HaYamin HaChadash’s Glick spoke of a Palestinian Avi Gabbay

for getting things wrong, they do provide an indication of where the electorate is headed. Overall, the Channel 13 poll predicted 56 seats in total for the centre-left block, spanning Blue and White through to the ArabIsraeli parties. The centre-right block, from Likud to the Union of Right Wing Parties, is expected to win 64 seats. The question remains – will Netanyahu join forces with the right-wing parties as he has indicated, or will he seek an easier time negotiating with the Trump administration, and instead turn to Blue and White? We’ll find out next week.

state west of Jordan being an existential threat to Israel. “We can’t allow any of the land to be given to the Palestinians. We’re very concerned about the prospect of a Likud–Blue and White coalition. We need a strong, right-wing government so we don’t have to divide Jerusalem, and we need to make it clear to our friends in the Trump administration that we need a new direction. “However, one of the thousands of things that distinguishes the Trump administration from Obama’s is that we can talk to them.” Likud’s Haskell said they wouldn’t be giving up any part of Jerusalem either. She added: “The prime minister has said the first call he will make is to HaYamin HaChadash and Jewish Home. After, and if needed, the next will be to Blue and White, but anyone who joins the coalition will have to agree to the coalition principles.”

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Lessons for both sides of the debate The cold war between the Charedi community and the government over education rumbles on. This week, Orthodox leaders were irked by plans to legally require parents to tell councils if their child is not being taught in a school. This would finally allow councils such as Hackney to get a handle on how many children are being taught at home or in yeshivas and unlicensed premises. At present, Ofsted’s best guess is around 1,500 – mainly boys. It could be twice that. Orthodox groups say a compulsory new ‘register’ would be an encroachment on their rights. The government says it is about safeguarding. There are arguments on both sides, but the well-being of children should trump all in this debate. Yet the debate is not just about registers. It is much wider and must be seen in the context of recent and regular Ofsted downgrades of Orthodox schools, in part because they refuse to teach children about different sexualities and genders. The government’s new Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) law requires schools to do so, but on the sex education component it gives a parental opt-out until the child is aged 15. Some Orthodox educators say privately that they can live with that. For others, it is still terrible. A debate in the House of Lords today will take place against the backdrop of a large Charedi prayer gathering, which is a nice way of saying ‘protest’. There are strong views on both sides. The government insists schools must teach children fundamental British values such as tolerance, and this includes teaching them that not everyone is heterosexual, or identifies as the gender of their birth. The Charedi community insists it can teach children tolerance without teaching that. Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS), an umbrella body, sent headteachers guidance this week which seemed to cautiously welcome the new RSE rules, as they would “ensure that our children can form positive friendships and healthy relationships and are aware and protected from the increasing challenges that they are facing”. Some things could help smooth the way, though. The Charedi community could input into the training of teachers. Parents could input into how a school teaches RSE. London Ofsted inspectors could visit Charedi schools in Manchester that recently got good grades, in part by teaching equalities laws without “encouraging homosexuality”. In short, where there’s a will, there’s a way. But the will is lacking, and this week’s new consultation on laws requiring parents to register their unregistered children is being seen as a government response to Orthodox threats of a mass exodus from the classroom to the home. As with Brexit, we hope sensible heads prevail.

APATHY IS OUR GREATEST ENEMY Last weekend I joined a counterdemonstration against the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC)’s rally outside the Israeli Embassy [pictured]. The PSC event was being held to mark the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ so-called Great March of Return. I feel despondent at the apathy of the Jewish community. Our counter-demonstration numbered no more than 50 (which included non-Jews) and our voices were easily drowned out by the megaphones and much larger numbers of the PSC supporters. I don’t know how well this was advertised on social media (since I do not participate in social media myself) and I know it was Shabbat, but it appears so many secular Jews would have found

any excuse not to join us. Maybe fear is part of it, but that is completely unfounded. Many of us there were in our 70s and we had a very strong police cordon separating us from the PSC. What really sickened me was the sight of Charedim in their Shabbat best, standing with the PSC with placards condemning Israel. What will it take for the Jewish community to wake up and hear the things that are being shouted at us simply because we are supporting Israel, our ancestral homeland? A Corbyn-led government? OUR HISTORY NEEDS TO BE TOLD Two letter writers on 28 March, Angela Goldstein and Mervyn Smith, reached the same conclusion: today’s youth are ignorant of the facts surrounding Israel’s birth and current situation. The charity Middle East Education exists to fulfil this need. Its speakers, a Muslim and a Jew, give balanced talks together about the ‘Arab-Israeli conflict but demand from schools around

the country, Jewish and nonJewish, has grown so much during the past year that the charity has had to curtail its work due to lack of adequate funding. While imparting knowledge about Israel’s inventions such as the USB and cherry tomato is important, telling the facts of Israel’s history is even more urgently needed.

support and empathy for another creed, I merely criticised the arbitrary closing of synagogues in New Zealand to demonstrate that. Did churches close?

Orthodoxy and LGBT+ In the interview with Jonny Benjamin (“More important than ever to teach our children it’s OK to be different”, Jewish News, 28 March), he says: “Children and young adults who identify as LGBT+ are hugely more likely to suffer mental health issues, self-harm, or even take their own lives. Trans pupils, in particular, have enormously high levels of suicide.”

This is tragic but, if readers will excuse my political incorrectness, their self-identification may well be a case of psychological dysfunction rather than social pressure. Mr Benjamin admits as much when he refers to the “obvious link to mental health issues and LGBT+ identity”. Any form of bullying must be stopped, but other groups perceived as “other” suffer from it without these distressing outcomes to the same degree. His solution, “that teachers and schools talk to children and tell them it’s OK to be different to be gay, or non-binary” may, therefore, not be the best solution. Orthodox Judaism certainly

considers certain activities unacceptable but that does not mean it condemns as intrinsically evil those who feel drawn to them, as opposed to engaging in them. It sympathises with their struggle with their inner desires. If making children aware that some people have certain temptations was all that was required, it might be acceptable if presented in a maturityappropriate manner. After all, the matter is mentioned in the Torah and it is discussed in the Talmud. Martin D. Stern Salford

AGAINST A DIVIDED STATE Columnist Jenni Frazer writes against Binyamin Netanyahu’s statement that “the state of Israel only belongs to the Jewish people” (Opinion, Jewish News, 11 March). What she does not understand, or perhaps chooses to ignore, is the phrase “a state of all its citizens” (medinat klal ezracheha; Rotem Sela used the virtually identical medinat kol ezracheha, although contested, is generally understood as code for either a non-Jewish or a bi-national state. Sela, an intelligent woman, no doubt knows the import of the phrase. In his response to her post, Netanyahu reiterated his long-standing position that although Arab citizens of Israel are full citizens with equal rights, the state of Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people only. Regardless of what Rotem Sela or Jenni Frazer would like to think, this is the view of the overwhelming majority of Jewish Israelis. Nor is this incompatible with the position of the (smaller) ma-

jority of Jewish Israelis that there should be two states: the State of Israel for the Jewish people and a Palestinian state for the Arabs. Some on the left want to dilute or even eliminate the Jewish character of the State of Israel while at the same time promoting an exclusively Arab state in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. If that is Ms Frazer’s position, fine, but she should come out and say so explicitly. Bernard Schneider By email

Hidden danger behind the new US approach ALEX BRUMMER CITY EDITOR, DAILY MAIL

E

ver since the Yom Kippur war and the oil crisis of 1973-74, the United States has recognised the need to steer an even-handed path in the Middle East. Israel would be a strategic ally and its military needs looked after. The pro-Israel lobby in the US, supported by both the Jewish community and in more recent times evangelical Christians, would be heard. But the US also recognised the need to reach out to Arab states. Indeed, one of the few lasting legacies of the presidency of Jimmy Carter was the designation of the Middle East as a region of strategic importance to the US. Egypt would receive economic assistance parallel to that given to Israel. Leaders of the Gulf countries would be regaled in Washington and their military requests listened to. If for sensitive reasons America found it uncomfortable to arm Saudi Arabia directly, there was an understanding that Britain would step into the vacuum. When Saddam Hussein marched into Kuwait in 1991, the

late President George W Bush quickly organised a coalition of the willing, reclaimed Kuwait and was on the road to Baghdad when military operations were halted. As the decades passed, America repeatedly backed peace initiatives in the Middle East in the belief this was necessary to appease Arab interests by recognising, in some form, the aspirations of the Palestinians. As a reporter in Washington in the latter days of the Carter Administration (and beyond), I came to realise there was no secret about America’s interest in the region. It was driven by the thirst of US citizens for cheap petrol, keeping the nation’s factories running and combatting the curse of inflation. Indeed, in his memoirs no less a figure than former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan asserted the second Iraq war was more about keeping oil safe than anything else. That strategic rationale no longer exists to the same degree. The fracking revolution means the US is no longer dependent on cheap oil and gas from the Middle East. In almost every US state, start-ups and existing companies are successfully using fracking technology to extract oil and natural gas from once-inaccessible rock layers. US oil imports have plummeted from 12 million barrels-per-day in the

THE DANGER IS WHOEVER WINS THE ISRAELI ELECTION NEXT WEEK WILL NO LONGER FEEL THE DIPLOMATIC RESTRAINTS THAT WERE ONCE EXERCISED BY WASHINGTON years from 2004-07 to just 2.3m bpd last year and by 2020 the US Department of Energy expects America to be an exporter. Indeed, there is already surplus enough for Britain’s biggest energy company Centrica, owner of British Gas, to import liquefied natural gas from the US. Dan Brouillette, the US deputy energy secretary, says self-sufficiency has dramatically changed American policy in the Middle East. While the US still imports oil from overseas, it is no longer dependent on the region, and this has given the Trump Administration the wherewithal to make decisions which none of its predecessors since the late 1970s dared to make. It no longer feels in hock to Arab interests, which allowed Trump to fulfil a long-standing

pledge to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and more recently, during Benjamin Netanyahu’s curtailed trip to Washington, to express support for Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Such bold strategic steps have also been made possible by Israel’s new, better relationships with the Gulf nations responding to the arc of radicalism stretching from Iran through Syria and to the Yemen. The danger is whoever wins the Israeli elections next week will no longer feel the diplomatic constraints once exercised by Washington. There are some concerns, for instance, that parts of the West Bank could be annexed. Unchecked Israeli power, if applied indiscriminately, could erode democracy and strategic balance in the region.

Labour’s leadership must own its failure PETER MASON

NATIONAL SECRETARY, JEWISH LABOUR MOVEMENT

W

hether since the earliest days of Jewish artisans battling for representation within British trades unions at the time of the first ‘hostile environment’ at the turn of the 20th century, or later forming electoral pacts with the Transport and General Workers Union to defeat the Passfield White Paper in Parliament, the history of Poale Zion – renamed the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) – has always featured easy and difficult days. In response to persecution, pogroms and later the Shoah, the Labour Party has over the past century offered solidarity to the Jewish community, standing by its side in hard times and reflecting the hopes and aspirations of a largely impoverished migrant community. Whether this emancipation took the form of anti-racist struggles in Britain, or through the hope of national self-determination in the shape of what was to become

the State of Israel, Labour and the Jewish community were as one. Today, as a culture of antisemitism, obfuscation and denial grips the party, it would be remiss to look back over the last century of JLM’s affiliation, without recognising that there have always been points of disagreement. Today’s discord feels different. In the wake of the resignation of Luciana Berger MP, our parliamentary chair, from Labour, many in the JLM have questioned our ongoing commitment to remain affiliated to the party. Just in the last few weeks alone we have seen our worst fears confirmed. Political manipulation of the disciplinary process. When caught out by the leaks from those blowing the whistle, there has been a tissue of denial and obfuscation. The scale of Labour’s antisemitism crisis has been brushed under the carpet. Three of those accused were arrested. Knowing full well that there may still be more to come, and that we have yet to see the worst of it fills us with dread and despair. This week began in a remarkable way.

MANY IN THE JLM HAVE QUESTIONED OUR ONGOING COMMITMENT TO REMAIN AFFILIATED Demonstrating the compassion, concern and skill of a true statesman, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown released to the country a message of solidarity for us. It was a timely reminder that true leadership, the kind so lacking in today’s politics, must be about standing up for what is moral and right – even in the face of overwhelming odds and a chorus of criticism. Like his keynote address at our conference last year, Gordon’s contribution was entirely his own. We did not solicit his support. He just gave it. For Jewish Labour members it was a clarion reminder that we are not alone. Pride and strength come from those around you. We need it now more than ever. Not just from

prime ministers and parliamentarians, but also from within our community, the one we work to defend each and every day. There are those who believe that we must stay, stand and fight the antisemitism our members have experienced, and equally those who believe the time has come to walk away from the party. As the outcome of our emergency general meetings demonstrated, for the majority, for now, that time has not yet come. It may well still. However, equally clear is the commitment that there can be no return to the status quo. In referring the party to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, JLM has made a clarion declaration that we now believe the Party is institutionally racist. It will be for EHRC to make findings. In the interim, we have rededicated ourselves to root out antisemitism from the Labour Party and hold accountable those with the power, position and influence to do something about it. Their failure is not our failure, and they alone must own it.

Sex education is about the teaching of consent YEHUDIS FLETCHER

JEWISH ORTHODOX FEMINIST ALLIANCE

E

choing the rumbling ‘Chinuch crisis’, scores of parents, clergymen, activists and now a sprinkling of MPs in Birmingham and Manchester have protested the introduction of the Department for Education guidelines on how schools should deliver their sex and relationship curriculum. Much has been written about the new guidelines, how they might be interpreted by Ofsted and how they should be applied in a Chasidic school environment. The Chasidic community has a different attitude from the rest of the Charedi community to both sex and relationships, and also operate a different shidduch system. These differences mean the Chasidic community, which is most vocal in its refusal to implement the Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) curriculum, is most in need of it. When we teach children about sex, we are not telling them to have sex. Rather, we

are demystifying and contextualising sex and we must do this, because these issues are already present in our schools. SRE at its heart is not about revealing the mechanics of sex – although it may include that – it is about facilitating consent. It is about creating a reality where children understand they can withhold consent and also that in the absence of consent, they have been abused. This empowers children, forces adults to behave responsibly, and changes environments in which adults are able to take advantage of children so easily. It also teaches children how to consent when they become adults. At least one-in-20 children in the UK have been abused. There is no evidence children in the Charedi or Chasidic communities are less likely than others to be subjected. All children deserve to understand consent. For the other 19 out of 20 children, early marriage through the shidduch system brings the same issue to the fore. For Chasidic children, this early marriage is often while they are still in Years 12 and 13 – which will be spent in seminaries and yeshivas. Girls in particular might ‘start shidduchim’ at 17, and many boys will, too. Years 10 and 11 is the last stage of

WHEN WE TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT SEX, WE’RE NOT TELLING THEM TO HAVE SEX

schooling regulated in any meaningful way and is the last chance for these young adults to be taught, in a structured and responsible way, what exactly they are committing to when they say “yes” to the boy or girl sitting across from them. Teaching SRE at this stage ensures children are given the chance to understand informed consent, not just in how it relates to their impending marriages but also to the sex they will be expected to have with a stranger on their wedding night. Explaining contraception at this stage will also, at the very least, give young adults in the Chasidic community the knowledge they need before they embark on marriage. It is vital young adults receive this education. It is not something that can be left until days before a wedding. It is often too late to back out at that stage, and the pressure to go ahead will negate any possibility of any meaningful choice.

The inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) aspects of the curriculum will be a starting point for LGBT-identifying or questioning young adults – who are present in the Chasidic community in the same proportions as they are in others – to understand themselves before marriage and children. We are preventing loveless relationships between partners who will never be compatible. It is disturbing to see United Synagogue rabbis swept up in the panic, in contrast to the measured approach of Chief Rabbi Mirvis, who sees ‘no contradiction between preparing children for life in Britain and ensuring they are totally immersed in Torah values’. To those who insist children must not know about sex and relationships, SRE is about consent. Having experienced teenage Chasidic marriage, I can tell you we’re not fine as we are.

What you can do to help fight food waste

JOSEPH GITLER

FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN, LEKET ISRAEL

P

eople are surprised to find out that poverty exists in Israel. With the country having such a thriving economy and being the ‘start-up nation’ it is astonishing to learn that 20 percent of Israel’s population lives below the poverty line. Even more startling is the fact a large percentage of these people living with food insecurity, not knowing from where their next meal is coming, are working poor; families who have two breadwinners, earning two salaries but still being unable to feed their children. Yet despite the high percentage of the population living with food insecurity in Israel, 35 percent of all food produced in Israel goes to waste while half of it could be salvaged. Last year, food loss in Israel amounted to 2.5 million tonnes with a market value of 19.7 billion shekels (£4.2bn) (source: Leket Israel Food Waste and Rescue Report 2019). The issue of food rescue is not unique to Israel. City Harvest, the London-based food

bank, claims food from more than 13 million meals is wasted by businesses every month, which is more than enough to supply cooked meals to the 9.2m people living with food insecurity. According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development data that examines the extent of poverty after taxes and allocations, Israel has the second highest poverty rate, while the UK is at number 12. In Israel, steps have been taken to reduce food waste and encourage food rescue. Last October, the Food Donation Act was enacted into law thanks to cooperation between several Members of Knesset and supported and initiated by Leket Israel. Its goal is to encourage the rescue of surplus food and to protect the donor along the entire food chain from legal liability, providing they comply with the law’s provisions. In 2017, the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee published a report on food waste in England and made several recommendations including that the government adopt a national strategy to ensure the collection of wasted food throughout the UK. The government requires businesses above a certain size to publicly report their food

ONE OF THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF JUDAISM IS THE CONEPT OF BAL TASCHIT, THE PREVENTION OF SENSELESS DAMAGE OR WASTE waste and to separate food in a gradual process. One of the basic ethical principles of Judaism is the concept of bal tashchit, the prevention of senseless damage or waste. This idea is especially powerful when considering the amount of food that goes to waste every year around the world, specifically in the UK and Israel. This quality nutritious food could be donated to people who need it most. Rescuing surplus food is an immediate and attainable solution to addressing this growing crisis, as it is an existing alternative to food production. Not only can food rescue reduce the gap in food insecurity while saving about 72 percent of its costs, it also has social, economic and environmental benefits. These economic advantages are created when excess food, whose value is zero for the producer, is

transformed into a product of economic and nutritional value when donated to weaker populations. Given that the cost of food production has increased and so has its market price, the value of its production will be even higher and so will its value for the needy. Food rescue is a winning formula that enables the production of food without the substantial use of resources, while also contributing positively to the economy. What can people in the UK do to help fight food waste? 1. Join forces with other UK supporters of Leket Israel and arrange events to benefit it, or volunteer with Leket in Israel. Leket Israel depends on the generosity of donors. leket.org/en 2. Volunteer with City Harvest; food that would otherwise go to waste will go to feed the hungry.

1DANCE FESTIVAL

The Israeli Dance Institute held its annual Children’s Dance Festival at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre last Wednesday. The 400 children dancing from Jewish schools from north-west London as well as Wimbledon and as far afield as Birmingham danced to the programme Lo Nafsik Lirkod (We won’t stop dancing). Schools teach this programme throughout the year as PE or in a dance club and the festival is a culmination of the teaching. Inset are pupils taking part from Years 2 to 6 at Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School. “Our Israeli dance group have worked so hard and we are extremely proud of them,” said the school’s Jewish Studies lead Deborah Harris. “They have mastered every dance and really impressed everyone in the audience.”

‘I blessed the Pope – just like any good Jewish girl would!’ Actress Lesley Joseph tells Francine Wolfisz how a 600-mile pilgrimage to Rome inspired her to think more about her own beliefs

S

he was the oldest female contestant on Strictly’s dance floor, but now actress Lesley Joseph has broken new ground for a very different reason – as the first Jewish woman to bless the Pope. The Birds Of A Feather star made the surprising admission ahead of the airing of BBC2’s Pilgrimage: The Road To Rome, in which eight well-known personalities, all with differing beliefs and faiths, don their hiking boots and set off along the Italian section of an ancient 2,000km walking trail, the Via Francigena. Lesley joins actor Les Dennis, former Strictly professional dancer Brendan Cole, comedians Stephen K Amos and Katy Brand, Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford, Irish Eurovision Song Contest winner Dana and television presenter Mehreen Baig along the lesser-known pilgrims’ route from the Swiss Alps to St Peter’s Square in Rome, a distance of 621 miles in 15 days, before being treated to a private audience with the Pope. Of that experience, Lesley – who is known for her long-running role as man-eater Dorien Green in the popular ITV sitcom starring Linda Robson and Pauline Quirke – says meeting Pope Francis was both “extraordinary” and “incredibly moving”. She tells me: “We were taken aback at how approachable he was. There were eight of us, all of multi-faiths, some believers, some non-believers, but aside from the religious aspect, on a historical stage it was just extraordinary that we had half-an-hour with one of the most powerful men in the world. When we got outside, we were all in tears. “For some obscure reason, I also blessed him! When he came round, he said you don’t look 72 and I said,

‘oh bless you’. Then I realised I’d just blessed the Pope, like any good Jewish girl would do!” Speaking of her Judaism, Lesley reveals that while she is not practising, she does “identify with being Jewish” and that

her mother came from an Orthodox background. “My great-grandfather, Rabbi Chaim Zundel Maccoby, was the Kamenitzer Maggid, a rabbi from Russia who came over here and the whole of the East End would stop to hear him speak.

He has a hall at Bar Ilan University named after him. My grandfather, Abraham Mundy, ran the Jews’ Temporary Shelter in the East End to help immigrant Jews who came over. “Meanwhile, my mother was one of 12 and they lived a very Jewish life, but because of this I think most of the children went away from it, especially after the war.” The 72-year-old actress, who has two adult children, also feels a special reverence for Yom Kippur – and often attends synagogue with her close friend Maureen Lipman, whom she met at drama school. She explains: “I love spending a day in a synagogue and just having a day of thought and contemplation. What I like about it is that Jews all over the world are going through the same moment and are joined by a common thread. That I find very moving.” Likewise, she felt very proudly about her Jewish identity while embarking on what was essentially a Catholic pilgrimage – because for Lesley, the experience was less about religion and more of learning about other people’s beliefs. “I asked the Pope how he felt about the group being multi-faith and he said he was thrilled to open this pilgrimage to everybody,” she recalls. “It’s about what you find in yourself and about your own faith when you get to the end. “I did go and get blessed in a church

Holy steps: Brendan Cole, Les Dennis, Lesley Joseph, Greg Rutherford, Dana, Stephen K Amos, Katy Brand and Mehreen Baig

and lit candles, because there’s something about religion, the theatricality of it and of believing in something. “But this pilgrimage for me wasn’t about any one faith, it was more about getting on with other people of all different faiths and humanity, that’s what really joined us together.” Revealing that she still feels “very bonded” with the rest of the group, Lesley says the experience left a lasting impression on her and her own thoughts about spirituality. “I feel a lot of my life has been very spiritual,” adds Lesley. “It’s about acknowledging there’s something more up there. I’ve had things happen in my life where I’ve thought that is not just a coincidence, that is my father looking down, or that is planned and was meant to happen. “I do think there’s something else up there that is guiding us and I don’t believe this is all there is. I’d like to think that when you do go, there is something more. “Spirituality to me means how you deal with things here and now, how you deal with others and being kind. So in that sense, it did feel like quite a spiritual pilgrimage for all of us.”  Pilgrimage: The Road To Rome begins on Friday, 9pm, BBC Two

Lifestyle / Domestic abuse

‘I wanted to break up with him… but he just threatened even more violence’ Mum-of-two Miriam*, 51, was in an emotionally abusive relationship for years before a WIZO domestic violence shelter helped turn her life around. She shares her story with Louise Scodie

I

was a strong person from an academic family. I was a youth leader and then an army commander. After that I built a great career, working internationally as a creative. One thing was missing though. At 38, I was still single and longing for children. With no man in my life, I started IVF alone. The process made me feel so lonely, that I signed up for online dating. That’s where I met Ron*. My self-esteem was so low, but he made me feel beautiful, he told me he loved me. He was living with his parents after a broken engagement; I took him under my wing, supporting him professionally and financially. We had already decided to have a child when Ron started to throw things and be abusive towards his family. When he turned on me, I made excuses for him. I figured his problem was ADHD. He told me that I looked like a cow. I stopped wearing makeup, because he said I looked like clown wearing it. My self-esteem plummeted. Ron criticised me more and more. After we had my daughter, he would say that I was losing my mind. I decided to break up with him and he threatened me with violence.

One day, I found a pitchfork on my dining table. That was a message. I was so scared that I stayed; I got pregnant again and I was trapped. Ron was so controlling. He put cameras everywhere to monitor me. I wasn’t allowed to talk in the car, even if I was driving. He’d say that I didn’t know how to speak. He’d threaten me physically. He’d make me feel guilty whenever I spent money, even though my unemployment cheque was three

HE SAID I LOOKED LIKE A COW… I WASN’T ALLOWED TO TALK IN THE CAR, EVEN IF I WAS DRIVING times his salary. Somehow, I found out about WIZO’s shelter for domestic abuse survivors. They told me to leave, but I made a huge mistake and stayed for another year. We went

to a counsellor, who got us to stay together – that was a mistake. I also didn’t know how to uproot my daughter, who’s severely diabetic. I didn’t fully realise that I needed to leave until I watched a TED talk on emotional abuse. Only after that did I ask for a separation. Ron said he’d stop my kids from seeing my family and that he’d put my father in jail. I was terrified and believed everything Ron said. In fact, Ron’s plan was to put me in prison. He called the police: I was the victim, but they took me away instead. I was still in my pyjamas. He’d told them that I was abusing our kids, but after interviewing me the police realised what was really happening. They called social services, who said I needed to leave straightaway for the WIZO shelter. I had halfan-hour to pack up everything for me and the kids. It was midnight when we arrived at the shelter. The shutters were down and there were bars on the windows. Some of the residents came downstairs and silently carried up our stuff and my children. When we got to our room, I sat on the bed and started crying. Then one of my kids thanked me for leaving home. I knew then that I’d done the right thing and that

Miriam (not her real name) with her two children

made me cry even more. Five years on, I still cry when I think about that. After four months of rehabilitation in the shelter, I felt I was done. But the manager said if I left too soon I’d go back to the abuse, so I stayed for another six months of psychological support. I learned how to cope with seeing Ron during access visits. I was able to look him in the eye for the first time. I wasn’t scared of him anymore. Life has been full of police, restraining orders and court hearings ever since. It’s still not over – I have another hearing coming up. Ron’s taking me to court over my daughter’s medical treatment. He’s also demanding that I issue a public apology for “kidnapping” his kids to the shelter. When he sees the kids, he manipulates them. Without WIZO, I’d be a mop at Ron’s feet. I’d be completely nonfunctional. I was nearly there.

I’m much stronger now. It’s great being able to decide things for myself and I have my own jewellery business. But things are still hard. I’m nearly out of money after paying all the lawyers’ fees and I can only look short-term into the future. Abuse crosses all divides. It has nothing to do with intelligence. I gave a talk at WIZO LA’s luncheon last year and, after I spoke, seven women approached me to say that they were in abusive relationships. You’d be surprised how many people in your circle are in this situation.” *The victim’s real name and her abuser’s have been changed to protect their identities  Miriam’s jewellery is available online at etsy. me/2UoCH7j. Epic Vale!

Caron Bluestone discovers the sweeping beauty of Dedham Vale and Constable Country and finds out more about Colchester’s Jewish roots

Main and inset: Caron and her family enjoy a short break in Constable Country. Below: Idle Waters and some of the fine cuisine on offer at Le Talbooth

Y

ou don’t need to go far to escape the hustle and bustle of London life to explore the beauty of the British countryside. A mere 90 minutes’ drive from north London up the A12 lies Constable Country on the Suffolk-Essex borders. It’s a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where artist John Constable was born and where he painted many of his most celebrated works, including The Hay Wain. With the kids bundled in the back of the car, we were all excited about our much-needed escape. The gruelling school exams over, I wanted some peace, fresh air and a change of scenery. We were off to one of my favourite destinations in the Dedham Vale, which is dotted with chocolate box villages and cream teas. Maison Talbooth, which is part of Milsom Hotels, is well-known in the area as the luxury boutique hotel boasting an outdoor heated pool and its own award-winning, fine dining restaurant, Le Talbooth. But on our latest visit to the area, we opted for a new addition to the Milsom collection, Idle Waters. This timber-framed 16th-century cottage has recently undergone extensive renovation and is perfect for guests and small groups looking for something that little bit more private, complete with two en-suite double bedrooms. Quaint and historic, the cottage actually features in Constable’s painting, The Vale of Dedham. Inside, visitors can expect a décor that is chic and luxurious with all mod-cons at hand, yet cosy too with exposed beams, thick pile carpet, fur throws on massive comfy beds and an original inglenook fireplace. The real pièce de résistance, however, was the view. From the huge bay windows, we gazed in admiration at a majestic weeping willow and a quaint bridge crossing over the River Stour. It’s small wonder that Constable and other artists were drawn to the beauty of this landscape.

Another nice surprise was the hamper awaiting us, complete with provisions for a continental breakfast. There’s a fully-equipped kitchen too, but we ate at Milsoms, their other boutique hotel situated just minutes’ walk away, for dinner and breakfast. This is a foodie part of the world and the brasserie follows firmly in the footsteps of its sister restaurant, Le Talbooth, so it would have been rude not to try it. Sated on fantastic food, we slept like babies, ready for walks in our wellies the next day. The Stour Valley Path, which winds along 60 miles of beautiful countryside in Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, runs right from the door of Idle Waters. We took the shortest walk through the woods, building dens until the kids tired, before we headed for the pretty hamlet of Flatford, where you can learn more about Constable’s life and work. From Flatford Mill, once owned by the artist’s family, to Flatford Bridge Cottage, where he was born, history, art and nature combine to make for a fascinating visit. There’s also a little

gift shop and attractive tea room sitting directly on the river bank. We made our way to our next destination, Colchester, which is just 20 minutes from Dedham Vale and boasts a Jewish past and present. The community in Colchester flourished in medieval times up to the expulsion of the Jews in 1290, before a later community was re-established in the late 1800s after they were allowed to return. A synagogue was established and the first Jewish marriage of Samuel Levy, late of Bury, to a Kitty, daughter of Isaac Abrahams of Colchester, was recorded. Jews were welcomed and rapidly grew in number to become half of the overall population of the town, bringing with them two kosher butchers, a kosher bakery and Jewish resorts

and summer camps. The community today is fewer in number, with services run by the Colchester and District Jewish Community. Before heading back to London, an obligatory stop at Colchester Zoo was made. Now, I’m no zoologist and my last foray to London Zoo was admittedly in the dark for the Christmas lights trail, but I was blown away by the sheer size and variety of animal population seen in their natural habitat. I cannot remember ever having fed a giraffe either! We saw lions and tigers up close, enormous rhinos, and the children especially enjoyed the interactive areas dedicated to sea, river life and insects. From sweeping natural beauty to nature at its best, we’re sure to return to this corner of England once more.

CARON’S TRAVEL TIPS Caron and her family stayed at Idle Waters, Dedham, Essex, where prices start from £250 per night for four people. Access to the spa at Le Talbooth and the pool house is available with prior arrangement. Details: milsomhotels.com

SEDRA Tazria HaChodesh BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL This week’s readings require taking out three Torah scrolls: the first for the weekly portion, the second for the last of the four specially scheduled supplementary portions leading up to the spring month of Pesach and the third, because this year, the new moon coincides with Shabbat. The first reading discusses women’s health. Birthing mothers should have a long period of recovery. Thereafter, they bring an offering to the sanctuary. A detailed analysis of skin ailments (leprosy) follows. The priests doubled as doctors and decided when a sufferer was clear or infected. Infection could set in a body, an article of clothing or into the walls of a house. Tazria concludes with the libations, meal and animal offerings made on Shabbat and on the new moon. In commemoration of the preparations made to leave Egypt, the second scroll reading from Exodus 12, introduces the first national commandment: to establish a calendar starting with Nissan. The reading instructs on how to prepare the paschal sacrifice, which is consumed with unleavened bread and bitter herbs only by those whose males are circumcised. This rule does not apply to seder night, where there is no lamb ritual. On the contrary, seder night is an educational opportunity to share the memory of the miracle of deliverance. The third scroll for new moon marks the ancient celebrations on the first day of each month. The first day of Nissan is unique, as it serves as the anniversary of royalty: biblical monarchs counted their reign to start from the first calendar month.

BY RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF Who knows three? I know three! Three fathers: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Three foot festivals: Pesach, Shavuot and Succot. Three parts to the priestly blessing of Birkat Kohanim. Three pillars that support the world: Torah study, prayer and acts of kindness. Three is the first time there is a sequence or a pattern. In fact, halacha allows certain assumptions to take place after an event has happened three times. It is for that reason that King Solomon said: “A threefold cord is not quickly broken.” The Talmud takes this a step further and said that when families stand for

Jewish values and pass them on for three generations, they are likely to remain for the long term. Abraham, Issac and Jacob make their own unique contributions to form

the Jewish nation. Three foot festivals create a structure for the whole year. A three-part blessing with messages of longevity, endurance and peace and a Jewish ‘holy trinity’ of Torah study to engage our brains, prayer as the service of the heart and acts of kindness to occupy our hands. Three represents continuity, the idea that we are part of a process that can impact our families and the world around us. When positive patterns are formed, the future is all the more secure.  Rabbi Naftali Schiff is founder and chief executive of Jewish Futures

The Bible Says What? Moses was married to a Midianite and a Cushite BY RABBI ELANA DELLAL The narrative of Moses meeting and ultimately wedding Tziporah, daughter of the Midianite priest Jethro, is very well-known. However, Numbers 12:1 speaks of Moses’ wife not as a Midianite, but rather as a Cushite. The text reads: “Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses, because of the Cushite woman he had married.” It continues by detailing the divine curse through the form of tzaraat (a scale-like disease) given to Miriam for engaging in this slander. But what was slanderous about their speech? Throughout our biblical text, Cush refers to a land in Northern Africa, not close to the land of the Midianite tribe. Was the Cushite wife, referred to in Number 12:1 Tziporah? Or did Moses have a second wife, who was a Cushite? Ancient Jewish historian Flavius Josephus attempts to answer this question in his book, Antiquities of the Jews. According to this account, while Moses was living as an Egyptian, he

led that nation’s army in a war against Ethiopia, and during the siege he married an Ethiopian. Josephus concludes this wife is the ‘Cushite woman’ Miriam and Aaron speak about. However, the works of Josephus are not trusted as historically accurate and it is most probable that ‘Cush’ was simply being used in a pejorative way when speaking about Tziporah. Most commentators agree that the Cushite woman of Numbers 12:1 is Tziporah and that Aaron and Miriam were using racist language. As a Midianite, Tziporah probably had darker skin than the Israelites. Perhaps Miriam was punished with tzaraat because she spoke about Tziporah’s ethnicity in a derogatory way. This interpretation encourages us to be mindful of the words we use and the potential damage of using hateful speech towards others.  Rabbi Elana Dellal is a member of the rabbinic team at The Liberal Jewish Synagogue

Progressively Speaking Does everyone have the right to a platform? BY RABBI SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD One cannot stress enough just how much Judaism values words. The proverb says “the tongue has power over life and death” – words have the power to create and to destroy. So our texts emphasise the importance of avoiding destructive speech. We know the power of words, yet Judaism rarely bans free speech, expecting us instead to monitor ourselves to behave as a holy people. Talmud routinely records dissenting opinion; Midrash is allowed its florid flights of fancy. Our prophets raged against the powers of their time, rabbis interpreted according to their worldviews. The practise of the Sanhedrin was for junior rabbis to speak before their more senior colleagues so they could speak their minds freely. Lashon hara (evil speech) is not explicitly prohibited in Torah, yet rabbinic tradition teaches it is worse than idolatry, murder and incest combined, having three victims: the

speaker, the listener and the person spoken about. While freedom to speak one’s mind is respected, there is an expectation one does not speak to cause pain, nor inflicts harm. The rabbis knew free speech is not without consequence. The community must engage, challenging and opposing destructive ideas and words openly and with reason. That said, there are limits to the tolerance of free speech in the Jewish world – most notably exercised by the herem (ban) imposed on Spinoza in 1656 for his views about the existence of God, which undermined the very foundations of Judaism. Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi (pictured)’s

recent failed attempt to enter the UK focused attention on the limits of free speech in Judaism – especially his blaming sick children for sins in previous lives, spreading racism, homophobia and intra-religious hate and presenting a distorted Judaism. There are Jews who would defend his right to hate-filled views, and Jews who would debate them with ethical and rational counter-arguments, but I’m glad Rabbis Mirvis and Dweck did neither, drawing the line at his destructive words, asking Mizrachi be given no platform in this country. The Amidah ends with a prayer asking for the strength to keep our tongue from causing harm and our lips from speaking evil. We are supposed to try to control our words ourselves. But when God’s name is used to promote destruction, Judaism reaches its limits.  Sylvia Rothschild has been a community rabbi in south London for 30 years

DAVID SEGEL TRAVEL AGENT

WEST END TRAVEL Dear David I’d like to treat my wife to a short and inexpensive kosher summer break in Venice to celebrate our anniversary, combining the trip with Jewish interest and historic culture. Michael Dear Michael BA, EasyJet and Ryanair all fly to Venice from London in just over two hours with daily flights offering very attractive fares if booked in advance. Jews settled in Venice as early as the 10th century and, even today, you will still find evidence of Jewish contribution to this unique city. The old ghetto, dating back to 1516, is still the nerve centre of early Venetian Jewish life

SWEET TREE HOME CARE SERVICES Dear Rikki I’m very concerned about a relative – their memory and mood have deteriorated for some time. How can I get an assessment that will lead to advice, support and guidance on the next steps? Joe

Dear Joe Initially, any concerns you have should be raised with your GP. On some occasions, a physical condition can be the cause of some confusion, but also the GP can support the referral to NHS diagnostic services through memory clinics. Follow up support and expert knowledge are key after this initial diagnosis to provide the person and their family with information to find the best course of action. At SweetTree Home Care Services, I am a Specialist Nurse Consultant in Dementia and I offer a comprehensive assessment, monitoring and support package to support the person’s journey, step by step. and the strictly kosher canal front Gam-Gam restaurant is open daily. Venice offers a wide variety of excellent hotels, from the deluxe Cipriani to first class and lower cost hotels catering for all tastes and budgets. I suggest you book a guided tour around the ghetto area to include several synagogues and specifically the impressive Jewish museum that features ancient scrolls and Hebraic memorabilia. Be sure to take a waterbus canal tour (or private gondola if you can afford it!) along the impressive Grand Canal surrounded by magnificent palaces, amazing buildings and Italian architectural splendour. Sightseeing tours start at St Marks’ Square with its imposing cathedral and you will enjoy strolling across the narrow bridges and canals while exploring Venice Old Town. The upmarket beach resort at Venice Lido is just a short boat ride away and although part of the city of Venice you will find a completely different, less frenetic world with beautiful beaches, real elegance and wonderful hotels along the shores of the Adriatic Sea.

include holistic physical, cognitive, psychological and medication reviews. What can I do? Eleanor

CAROLYN ADDLEMAN DIRECTOR OF LEGACIES

KKL Dear Carolyn My neighbour lives alone and recently told me she has signed a lasting power of attorney in favour of her carer who now seems to be neglecting her and buying food for herself while my neighbour has very little to eat. I don’t want to interfere, but I do want to help.

Dear Eleanor The idea of a lasting power of attorney, whether for property and finance or for health and welfare, is that the attorney (the carer) acts in the best interest of the donor (your neighbour). Unfortunately, there are an increasing number of cases being investigated for financial and physical abuse and neglect by carer attorneys. As the population rises, more and more of the elderly need help with their finances and are using lasting powers of attorney to enable family or friends to assist them. More than one million lasting powers of attorney

have been registered since 2007. The majority of attorneys appointed are doing a great job. If you suspect that the carer is not acting properly and is depriving your neighbour of food, you can report this to the Office of the Public Guardian who will look into the matter, which may result in a prosecution if sufficiently serious. More than 2,000 cases are investigated every year so it may take some time for them to complete their enquiries. In the first instance you may wish to approach the carer quietly pointing out that there is not enough food in the house for your elderly neighbour so that she knows you are aware of what is going on.
