New year’s resolution Labour Party’s governing body unanimously backs plans to crack down on anti-Semitism Labour’s governing body last night unanimously backed measures to make it easier to punish anti-Semitism in the party, writes Justin Cohen.

In a move personally backed by leader Jeremy Corbyn [pictured] and the Momentum activist group, the national executive committee adopted proposals from the Jewish Labour Movement which makes racism – particularly anti-Semitism – a specific disciplinary offence for the first time.

But the addition to party rules must still be debated by delegates at the party’s annual conference next week ahead of a crunch vote, which senior Labour figures hope will start to repair relations with British Jews after a string of controversies engulfed the party during the last 18 months.

“We are heartened that the NEC has adopted our rule change proposals and will be taking them forward to Party Conference [in Brighton] next week,” said JLM chair Jeremy Newmark. “This is another step forward. However, our campaign will not end until these proposals are adopted in full by Conference itself. this is not a given and will require the firm support of the leadership.”

If passed, JLM – which first brought forward

proposals for a rule change exactly one year ago – said the constitutional amendments “will simply bring the Labour’s rules to the place that should have been expected from a political party rooted in values of equality and anti-racism”.

It added: “The proof of the pudding will be in the eating. That means that if passed at Conference the new rules will need to be firmly implemented to create a zero-tolerance environment for anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination. The party will then need to take steps to rebuild its relationship with the Jewish community.”

Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, who was accused of failing to get to the heart of left-wing anti-Semitism in her report on the issue, played a key role in ensuring the proposals received backing across all factions of the NEC. Following the meeting, Corbyn thanked the peer and JLM for their work in drafting the motion, adding: “Jeremy is delighted that the NEC backed plans to tackle discrimination in the party.

As a party of equality, there can be no place in Labour for prejudice.”

The move, whose specific wording was still hotly

debated until the meeting itself, finally bring racism in line with expressing support for another political party as a specific disciplinary category.

It says conduct involving “racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia or otherwise racist language, sentiments, stereotypes or actions, sexual harassment, bullying or any form of intimidation towards another person on the basis of a protected characteristic” should be considered prejudicial to the party. JLM fought off an attempt to make genuine and sincerely held views a mitigating circumstance.

Senior Reform Rabbi Laura JannerKlausner said Corbyn’s support for the rulechange was “a great move forward,” after a year in which he was criticised for not doing enough to tackle anti-Semitism on the left of his party.

Trump and Netanyahu united in opposition to ‘terrible’ Iran deal Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump met in New York on Monday night to discuss the Iran nuclear deal that both men oppose.

The agreement was negotiated between Iran, the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany in 2015 and limits the Islamic Republic’s abilities to make a nuclear bomb. It also extends international inspections, in return for a lifting of sanctions.

However Netanyahu and Trump have long campaigned against it, with Trump last year telling pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC that “my number one priority is to dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran”.

Before the meeting, Netanyahu told Trump: “I look forward to discussing how we can address together what you rightly called the terrible nuclear deal with Iran and how to roll back Iran’s growing aggression in the region, especially in Syria.”

Following the meeting, and before addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Netanyahu said: “There is an American willingness to fix the deal and I presented a certain

course of action how to do it.”

Trump and Netanyahu are alone in wanting to tinker or “dismantle” the nuclear deal, however, especially after international inspectors

most recently said that Iran was complying with its terms and obligations.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said

the accord was “essential” and scrapping it would launch a regional arms race.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the US would pay a “high cost” if it withdrew from the nuclear deal now, arguing that to do so would “chip away at trust”.

Meanwhile the Israeli-Palestinian conflict dropped off the radar, with Trump’s envoy to Middle East peace, Jason Greenblatt, saying: “Instead of working to impose a solution from the outside, we are giving the parties space to make their own decisions.”

Hours before Netanyahu was due to speak at the UN about the dangers of Iran and its proxies, the IDF said it had shot down a Hezbollah drone over the Golan Heights.

The reconnaissance drone was intercepted by a Patriot missile after military sources said the unmanned aerial vehicle was tracked approaching Israel from the Syrian capital.

Footage posted to social media showed the missile’s trail over the northern Israeli town of Safed. The drone is believed to have been downed over the Syrian border village of Quneitra.

Party leaders send hope for a sweet year to come The leaders of the three main political parties have wished Britain’s Jews a happy new year.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the high holy days were a time “to reflect on how we have met the challenges in the year that has passed”.

May’s team reiterated her speech to a Downing Street reception last week, in which she said: “I am proud to say that I support Israel. And it is absolutely right that we should mark the vital role that Britain played a century ago in helping to create a homeland for

the Jewish people.”

Meanwhile Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable said the holidays offered “the chance for contemplation, prayer and renewal; to reflect on our actions, character and responsibilities to one another”.

He added: “This year is particularly significant as it marks the centenary of the Balfour Declaration… an important moment in history... As we look back over the historical, legal and political significance of the declaration, we should remember those who brought it into being - including the great former [Liberal] Prime Minister

David Lloyd George.”

He said he was “committed to seeing a negotiated peace settlement with a twostate solution, and I will continue to champion the values of human rights and the rule of law for everyone on both sides of the conflict”.

Corbyn, by contrast, steered clear of specifics, alluding to his party’s difficulties in suspending and disciplining party members whose comments both past and present have been deemed anti-Semitic.

The Opposition leader said: “As Jewish communities prepare to celebrate the high holy days, I want to extend my warmest greetings. This is a time of celebration and new beginnings but also contemplation and reflection on how we have met the challenges in the year that has passed.”

He added: “This year, 5778, will present our country with new challenges. But working together, the Jewish community and people of all faiths and none can and will overcome them.”

SIR ANDREW HEADS OASIS OF PEACE UK A former British ambassador to Israel has been appointed chairman of charity Oasis of Peace UK, the British arm of Israel’s unique peace village, writes Jake Levison.

Sir Andrew Burns will work with newly-elected vice chairman Laurence Brass, an experienced Jewish communal activist.

Oasis of Peace, also known as Never Shalom or Wahat al-Salam, is a co-operative village jointly founded by Israeli Jews and Arabs to show the two peoples can live in peace and harmony.

BOARD PROPOSES FIXED TERM PLAN The Board of Deputies has proposed capping the number of consecutive and total stints its representatives can serve in order to bring in “new ideas”.

In a paper published this week, senior vice-president Richard Verber suggested introducing the concept of terms of service, “to consist of a defined number of years and establish the number of consecutive terms that can be served by a member”.

UJIA picks first female chair Louise Jacobs, the former head of the London Jewish Cultural Centre who oversaw its merger with JW3, has been named as the new chair of UJIA, writes Jenni Frazer.

Jacobs will be the first woman to take the post at what is generally regarded as the most powerful charity in the community.

Bill Benjamin, the Americanborn businessman who has led UJIA for five years, made the announcement to more than 850 people attending the charity’s annual fundraising dinner in central London on Monday evening.

But as well as the unexpected elevation of Jacobs, who will formally take over the role in January when Benjamin steps down, the evening signalled a change in direction for UJIA. The large numbers present of young people in their 20s and 30s were a clue: but as a short presentation made by Jacobs and the UJIA chief executive Michael Wegier made

Israel’s ambassador to the UK, Mark Regev, recalled a close friend from Australia who had served under the young soldier who was to become Israel’s chief of staff, Lt-Col Benny Gantz. All the soldiers in that unit, the ambassador said, had predicted, even 30 years ago, that their commander was destined for great things.

chief of staff from 2011 to 2015, completing 38 years of military service. In a wide-ranging address to the UJIA audience, he warned of the dangers of Isis and Iran, and, though conceding that it was possible to negotiate with an enemy, dismissed Isis fighters as “sub-human creatures… we can’t compromise and we have to struggle until we fix this issue”.

The son of a Holocaust survivor who was rescued from Belsen by liberators from the British army, Lt-Col Gantz also commended “strengthening moderate Islam”, because, he said, the “phenomenon of Isis comes from frustration”. If it was possible to offer hope for moderation, he said, that should be done.

Lt-Col Gantz, like all Israeli generals today, is legally required to have a threeyear “cooling-off ” period before he is allowed to enter politics, and is now coming to the end of that time.

He is widely spoken of as a future politician, and so when he referred to Israel’s most serious issue not as its ability to defend itself, in which he has full confidence, but rather its “internal challenges”, such as the gaps in education, health and wealth on the “periphery of Israeli society”, there was little doubt that his next stage might be the Knesset.

Brent Council has voted to adopt an extended definition of anti-Semitism that includes Israel criticism, but not before last-minute amendments.

Councillor Joel Davidson of the Conservative Party had earlier submitted that the Council adopt the new International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism, including the definition’s much-criticised working examples.

One amendment, submitted by Councillor Reg Colwill, also on behalf of the Conservatives, sought to withdraw IHRA examples from the Brent motion, instead only using the IHRA’s main definition.

The working examples, listed in bullet points, are designed to explain how antiSemitism can manifest itself through behaviour or comment, but critics say this risks limiting free speech. Exam-

Council members voted not to allow Colwell’s amendment, and instead debated the motion that included the working examples.

There has been some dispute about the rise in hate crimes and the effects on the Jewish community but I think everyone at Brent must be aware that anti-Semitism is at its highest level.”

Davidson said: “Brent has a problem with anti-Semitism. We all know this. It’s historic, going back a long time. The council and members need to reflect on what exactly it is that they can possibly object to.”

Threat to Nazi victims’ remains on Alderney A leaked report suggests a new energy project through the Channel Islands will do “great damage” to a gravesite where Jewish slave labourers are buried.

In an archaeological report seen by The Sunday Times, concern is raised that a power line between the UK and France will cut across the island of Alderney, where Hitler’s SS once guarded a concentration camp housing Jewish inmates.

Jews were imprisoned at Lager Sylt, one of four camps, and together with Lager Nordeney, one of two concentration camps built in 1942 and handed over to the SS in March 1943.

Inmates came from Sachsenhausen, a camp near Berlin, and one former inmate later recalled how “the most popular form of killing by the SS in Sylt was strangulation”.

While Nazi commanders burned all evidence and documents before their surrender, locals have since found hundreds of graves, believed to be those of Russian, French and Jewish labourers.

Archaeologists now say these graves could be destroyed by proposed

£500million energy scheme, which will link the British and French energy grids, and which is being funded by the European Union.

The report warns that damage has already been done and that “greater damage” will result if the remaining work goes ahead as scheduled.

Hundreds of young Israeli and British businessmen and women took part in an intensive three-day London conference last week staged by Calcalist, the Israeli business newspaper and website, writes Jenni Frazer.

The Next Game Changers was Calcalist’s second London conference, but the first to be held in the UK since Britain voted to leave the European Union. But businessman Teddy Sagi, in whose Camden Town headquarters much of the conference was held, told delegates: “I am a great believer in London and the British economy.

“Indeed, Brexit generated confusion and uncertainty among investors around the world, but business here did not stop for a minute.

“Therefore, I suggest that everyone be active and quick, especially at this time. Today, more than ever, London offers excellent business opportunities.”

Sagi was echoed by Xavier Rolet, chief executive of the London Stock Exchange Group.

Noting that there were currently 28 Israeli companies listed on the London Stock Exchange, Rolet told the Israeli participants: “There are good people here with whom to do business, investment and tech development. You have

In a day during which the Game Changers were offered tips on “how to build a $4billion company” and learned “how technology and data will change the future of sport”, the keynote address came from the mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat.

In his ninth year as mayor, Barkat, himself a former technology entrepreneur, has unveiled an ambitious plan called the “Jerusalem Gateway”, a new business district that he hopes will

transform the face of the capital.

“We have identified the core competitive advantages of the city of Jerusalem,” Barkat said. “The first thing is to note the brand – 3,000 years of investment”.

Because so many people around the world want to visit the city, the mayor’s first goal was to raise the number of hotel rooms available – and it is planned to have at least 2,000 new rooms in the Gateway district alone.

Transportation plays a big part in the scheme. “We are sitting on a transport hub which is the biggest of its kind,” he expained. “Two light rail lines and a new bus station make that hub the most accessible place in the country today,” adding that with government investment, Jerusalem was working on “a network of cable cars connecting ancient Jerusalem with the light rail lines”.

The Jerusalem Gateway, he promised, “will change the way people view the city – and the finished product would be “bigger than Canary Wharf”.

After a welcome by Calcalist’s founder and publisher Yoel Esteron, the conference continued with a number of specialist workshops for established as well as start-up businesses.

Jewish News meets... James Sorene

‘A platform for everyone’ The Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre’s chief executive tells Jenni Frazer why his organisation is the ideal antidote to extremism As “passionate believers in the two-state solution”, Bicom – the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre – is “always looking for how we can bring something new to the debate”.

So says Bicom’s chief executive, James Sorene, two years into the job and still fizzing with enthusiasm about Bicom’s unique Janus-like position – created by the Jewish community, but directing its central message not to Jews but to the wider British community. On the eve of a new trip to Israel, Sorene, former head of communications to Nick Clegg, spoke to Jewish News about his plans for the organisation.

“I bring extensive experience in how government works and my diplomatic and foreign policy background,” Sorene says. It means that much of the groundbreaking research that Bicom produces is aimed at being read in government departments, particularly the Foreign Office and the Department for International Development.

Sorene is at pains to delineate Bicom’s role, completely separate from mainstream Jewish community organisations. “Our relationship with government is as part of the policymaking process. We don’t lobby at all. What we do is

to produce reports, such as our Co-Existence Report, which is of such a high standard that it is palpably part of government decision-making.”

He is proud of a 2016 initiative in which Bicom “convened an Israeli-Palestinian dialogue. We brought a team of Israelis and a team of Palestinians to London to discuss ideas beyond the traditional Oslo track. We did it in conjunction with Chatham House and produced a report, which was read far and wide, in government, because it was one of the first reports of its kind in English, which talked about ideas and different tactics. It was an amazing document.”

With a smile, Sorene confides that “London has a really interesting role” in Middle East politics. “It’s a kind of known unknown. It’s an open secret that in the lobbies of many London hotels, if you know who you are looking for, you might find some very interesting people meeting.

London is a very useful place for that. It’s not too far away [from the Middle East] and it crosses over as a hub. Washington is too far.

“We can call it hiding in plain sight, but what it shows is that the UK is a much more significant player [in the peace process] than it lets on.

“It gives a lot of money in aid, and it has very good relations with Israel and the Palestinians.”

If the narrative has changed as far as government goes – and Sorene says Bicom is “an important part of that conversation” – he acknowledges things are not so easy on the media side, the other key part of his work.

Bicom is the only organisation taking groups of journalists to the region.“There is fatigue with Israel’s relations with the Palestinians and the media don’t see anything new occurring. Because this is a story in deep freeze, they are looking at other stories which are much more dramatic.”

Those who go to Israel are keen to find out about the situation on Israel’s northern border and the Golan, says Sorene. But Bicom also talks to journalists about terrorism. “We took a group in June, just after Manchester and London Bridge, and focused on combating terror.”

Sorene has to run to the airport, but he is sure of one thing: “If Bicom did not exist, it would have to be recreated the next morning. In an age of extremism, there has never been more need for an organisation like Bicom, an independent research hub and a platform for everyone.”

MP honoured for family’s heroism A Polish-born MP has received an award in Warsaw in honour of his great-uncle, who sheltered seven Jewish families during the Holocaust before being discovered and killed, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

Daniel Kawczynski, the MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, picked up the From The Depths Zabinski Award on behalf of his grandfather’s brother Jan on Monday.

Speaking to Jewish News ahead of his trip, the parliamentarian said he had first heard the tragic story of Jan when he was 12, on his first trip back to Poland.

Brave Jan Kawczynski, his wife and daughter lived on a farm and sheltered seven Jewish families in outbuildings and lofts before the Germans found out.

“He was on his way back one day when a neighbour stopped him and pleaded for him to turn around and run, because the Germans had his farm surrounded. But he continued on to the farm, because his wife and daughter were there. He knew he was going to be killed. That was the penalty for harbouring Jews.”

The MP only recently began talking about his family’s heroic role in the Shoah after a chance conversation with Jonny Daniels, a British Jew working in Eastern

Europe to preserve the legacy of pre-war Jewish communities.

“I was at Jonny’s house. He’d invited me over for a kosher dinner, when I was reminded of the stories about Jan. I told Jonny and he was fascinated. He went off to research it, spending months talking to people to corroborate it.”

The family’s fate, recalled orally through the generations, was that Jan “was made to take his officer’s clothes off and dig graves. First the Germans shot his 12-year-old daughter in front of him, then they shot his wife in front of him, then they shot Jan. Finally, they torched the farm, to set an example.”

Jan, a staunch Roman Catholic, was also one of Poland’s most renowned politicians, a fact Kawczynski found out only recently, during Daniels’ research.

“What’s really resonating with me,” said Kawczynski, “is that he realised he was putting his family’s life at risk and was still prepared to do it.”

The MP attended the ceremony at Warsaw Zoo, where Jan Zabinski – after whom the awards are named – hid dozens of Jews during the war.

Congressmen as well as Poland’s deputy prime minister.

During the trip, Kawczynski said he intends to help Polish politicians push Germany to pay war reparations as “compensation for the annihilation of an entire state”. He added: “This issue of killing Poles and Jews is not finished. We’re the last generation who can broach this.”

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said: “It is hugely important that the From The Depths Zabinski Awards continue to recognise the many quiet heroes who risked their own lives to shelter Jewish families, enabling them to find safe passage.”

JFS is looking for a new headteacher after announcing the end of an interim arrangement during which a consultant ran the school.

Chair of governors Geraldine Fairner said the job of finding someone to run Europe’s largest Jewish school would fall to Dr Chris Ray, the former head of Manchester Grammar School, assisted by Dr Helen Wright, Durell Barnes and Paul Spillane, who she

described as “experienced educationalists”.

Former head Jonathan Miller [pictured] abruptly resigned last year after the school was significantly downgraded following a surprise Ofsted inspection.

Consultant Deborah Lipkin was brought in as executive head, while Simon Appleman, the deputy head, has been acting head. In the past 12 months, exam results have hit record highs.

Norwood fashion shop Norwood has launched a menswear fashion boutique in Golders Green, just ahead of Rosh Hashanah.

Would-be dapper chaps can buy suits, shirts and shoes from high-end brands, with many of the donated items new and unused.

Following the opening on Friday, Norwood trading operations manager Kayt Men-

dies said she was “delighted” to open the shop after “a lot of hard work from the whole team”.

Austin and Audrey rock the West End They both shared a dream to “rock out” in front of thousands – and now Austin Kindler and Audrey Newman are doing just that after landing roles in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash production, School of Rock, writes Francine Wolfisz.

Based on the smash-hit film from 2003 starring Jack Black, the show follows wannabe rock star Dewey Finn (Gary Trainor), who poses as a substitute teacher and turns a class of straight-A students into a bona fide rock band.

He reveals his first taste of fame arrived last year, when pop sensation Adele invited him onto the stage during her concert at the O2. “I saw 20,000 people around me and thought, ‘one day, I want them all to come and see me at my concert’!”

Austin moved a step closer to that dream when his family took him to a performance of School of Rock earlier this year. “I thought it was the best show I’d ever seen.”

With the help of his mum, they tracked down the show’s casting director and he

The grant will be used to develop a year-long programme to enhance the skills of wider community through a series of talks and workshops. It will focus on areas of household budgeting, child-rearing, teen leadership and mental health awareness.

US JEWS ‘DISAPPROVE’ OF TRUMP, SAYS POLL American Jews overwhelmingly disapprove of President Donald Trump in almost every area, scoring him lower than his predecessor even on topics such as Israel, where Jewish approval of Barack Obama was relatively low, according to a new American Jewish Committee poll.

The survey, published this week, also shows a sharp increase in concerns about anti-Semitism in the United States, which may be a reflection of the increased influence of the “alt-right” since Trump’s election. [JTA]

ISRAEL SET TO ALTER ADOPTION LAW The Israeli government has said it will amend adoption law in the country to give same-sex couples equal rights.

The state made the announcement this week during a hearing at the Supreme Court in response to a petition regarding adoption by same-sex and common-law couples.

The state said it would introduce the new legislation by June 2018. [JTA]

Charedim clash with police over IDF draft An investigation has been launched into how Israeli police officers dealt with a protest by strictly-Orthodox men that quickly turned violent.

Three men were hospitalised as security forces arrested several Charedi protesters outside an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) conscription centre in Jerusalem on Sunday.

The protesters, who were met with water cannon, had massed outside the IDF centre, voicing their anger that up to 40 strictly-Orthodox men had been arrested for refusing to serve.

In footage widely shared on social media, some protesters are seen to receive strong-arm treatment from police officers, and on Monday, the Justice Ministry and Police Internal Investigations Department said they would investigate.

Instead, he was suspended from the party for a further year, keeping him sidelined until 27 April 2018. Despite more than 1,000 Jewish Labour members and supporters signing a letter to The Guardian condemning Labour’s decision not to expel him, the decision still stands.

Trump visits Israel The president paid a visit to the Jewish state on his first overseas trip as president in May, which also included stops in Italy and Saudi Arabia. The two-day trip included a stop at Yad Vashem and meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin, as well as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Trump, accompanied by his daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, also stopped at the Western Wall for a private visit, making him the first sitting US president to visit the holy site and earning him high praise across Israel. A few months after the visit, Trump dispatched a team of top aides, including Kushner, Jason Greenblatt and Dina Powell, to visit Israel and other Middle Eastern countries in an attempt to revive peace talks.

The Rabbi Joseph Dweck saga The head of the S&P (Spanish and Portuguese) Community sparked outrage in June after arguing Judaism allows for two men to love each other, despite its prohibition in the Torah. Strictly-Orthodox Rabbi Aaron Bassous led the charge against Dweck, branding his comments “dangerous”.

Pressure was then heaped on Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, with a number of rabbis backing Bassous’ claim that if Mirvis failed to remove Dweck from his position, he would be “responsible for the splitting of Anglo-Orthodoxy”. Rather than succumbing to these demands, Mirvis shone a light on what he felt the Dweck affair truly represented – the state of Jewish identity itself. “We have

come to define ourselves by that which divides us, rather than that which unites us… is this what we have become?”

Israel freezes pluralistic Western Wall agreement A June decision by Netanyahu’s Cabinet to put a hold on the creation of an egalitarian section of the Western Wall, a deal passed in 2016, drew the ire of American Jewish leaders. Some leaders, also angered by the advancement of a bill to give the Orthodox Chief Rabbinate complete control of conversions performed in Israel, warned of a growing schism between American Jews and Israel. Natan Sharansky, the chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, also joined critics of the decision, saying it “will make our work to bring Israel and the Jewish world closer together increasingly more difficult”. In August, the Israeli Supreme Court said the government must either reinstate the agreement or provide an explanation as to why it had put a hold on it.

Theresa May’s epic election fail The UK was shocked after Theresa May’s snap election ended in a hung parliament in June. The Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, managed to gain 40 percent of votes, news that was met fearfully by the UK’s Jewish community. Distrust in Corbyn stemmed from comments he had made two years prior to the election, when he insisted that “friends” from Hamas are dedicated to “long-term peace and and social justice”, and that Britain’s labelling of Hamas as a terrorist organisation was a “big, big historical mistake”. The community views with concern his handling of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party and the House of Commons’ Home Affairs Committee last year found that 87 percent of British Jews believe it is far too tolerant of anti-Semitism.

Neo-Nazis rally in America White supremacists gathered in Virginia in August to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The far-right protesters chanted anti-Semitic and racist slogans, including “Jews will not replace us”, and brawled with counterprotesters, one of whom, Heather Heyer, was killed when a suspected white supremacist rammed his car into a crowd. Trump condemned the protest, calling out neo-Nazis and white supremacists in one remark, but blamed both sides for the violence at other times, and said there were “some very fine people” in both groups.

Jewish groups, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and the president’s top economic adviser, Gary Cohn, criticised Trump, saying he was not doing his part to condemn hate.

Taking stock of the sweet and the sour The Hebrew year that’s passed has been nothing if not eventful. In the United States, the election of a right-wing nationalist proved a boon to right-wing nationalists in Israel, but a headache for American Jews, who watched in horror as neo-Nazis marched through Virginia before ramming a car into a counter-protest, killing a young woman. White supremacy, it seems, is back.

At home, far-right group National Action was proscribed, a first-of-its-kind ban, while the government adopted a new working definition of anti-Semitism that widens the scope of Jew-hatred to include criticism of Israel – a potential problem for free speech, but a victory for those who say the one masks the other.

Among those whose criticism of Israel strays dangerously close to something more sinister are the unholy trinity of Malia Bouattia, Ken Livingstone and David Ward. The year saw the careers of the student leader, ex-mayor and former Lib Dem MP take a turn for the worse: Bouattia failed in her NUS re-election bid, Livingstone was suspended (again) from the Labour Party, and Ward wasn’t even allowed to stand in the election. We happily bid ‘Zionara’ to the lot of them.

We didn’t say goodbye to Senior Sephardi Rabbi Joseph Dweck, although for a while it looked like we may have to. A charismatic preacher loved by S&P members, Dweck ran into controversy earlier this year for giving a thumbs-up to the LGBT revolution, saying: “Our sexuality is the foundation of our identity.”

That isn’t the party line as far as other Orthodox rabbis are concerned, so there were strong calls for him to go. The Chief Rabbi mediated and Dweck stayed, but the infighting left a bitter taste and led to calls for unity. At most, there is a ceasefire.

On a brighter note, Jewish schools were united in celebration this summer, as students excelled at both GCSE and A-Level, but Hasmonean bosses were left pondering their architectural plans, as Sadiq Khan put a stop to its green belt expansion project. The government stepped in and the whole thing stalled, so what any future enlarged Hasmo will look like, and where it will be, remains to be seen.

Let’s pray next Rosh Hashanah sees us experience hope rather than bitterness. Jewish News wishes readers a happy, healthy and sweet new year.

The Declaration was the culmination of a year of effort following meetings between Weizmann and Balfour [and others] going back to their initial meeting way back in 1906 – a point I was able to make just last week when speaking on the subject at Bromley Reform Synagogue.

Sins of the son reflect on the prime minister JENNI FRAZER

W

e are widely instructed not to visit the sins of the father upon the son, and, largely, most of us manage to obey that stricture.

But how about the other way round, when the “sins” of the son reflect badly on the father or mother?

I had cause to think about that this week when looking at the mess in which the Netanyahu family of Balfour Street, Jerusalem, has embroiled itself. Item: mother, Sara; occupation, wife to prime minister, almost certainly about to be indicted for alleged corruption. Item: father, Benjamin, prime minister; corruption charges against him hovering down the track.

And then there is Baby Bear, aka Yair Netanyahu. Honestly, words almost fail when it comes to Yair, because where do we start?

He’s 26, he lives at home, he has no job. And he has spent most of his time over the past month or so, under the “alias” of “Yair Hun”

(Attila or Honey?) railing on social media against perceived slights on his family to the point where he has been “embraced” by none other than the far-right anti-Semite, David Duke.

Something to be proud of there, Yair, huh?

So what exactly did Yair say and do when lashing out at his enemies? Well, he posted on Facebook a cartoon featuring George Soros, the Hungarian-born Jewish left-wing financier, a reptile, and a highly controversial stylised “antiSemitic” merchant. You pretty much know you have strayed into dodgy territory when the cartoon gets endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan and the Daily Stormer, and when the Anti-Defamation League calls the cartoon anti-Semitic.

Then Yair decided to have a go at Israel’s most decorated soldier, the former prime minister Ehud Barak, calling him a drunk who is in need of geriatric treatment.

Again, nice, respectful behaviour. Not. He took the cartoon down eventually, after four days of febrile headlines in the Israeli press, unusually across the political spectrum. Even right-wingers found Yair’s actions difficult to defend. Although one right-wing friend wondered why I was so offended by Yair – “he’s not running for political office, he doesn’t represent anyone” – both of which are true.

But it is precisely because those things are the case that I pray for Yair – who, let us not

forget, has a state-funded driver and security guard – to shut up and show a little seichel. His younger brother, Avner, has managed perfectly well without showing up in the public prints every five minutes.

It remains an unpalatable truth that many people in the public eye have difficult relatives from whom they would rather not hear. Bill Clinton’s brother Roger was a cocaine addict; Jimmy Carter’s brother Billy once pee-ed on an airport runway in full view of a slew of visiting dignitaries; Randolph Churchill appeared to have spent much of his entire adult life drinking, to shake off the legacy of Winston.

But just as there are examples of embarrassing relations, there are numerous blameless individuals of whom we never hear because they are not their brother or sister’s keeper.

I would be thrilled if I never read another word about Netanyahu Jr, but admit it is unlikely. Nevertheless, even at 26 it is not too late for him to reform.

Perhaps he could get an intern job in Ehud Barak’s office and learn something?

Landmark year shows how far peacemaking has come JEREMY HAVARDI

T

his is a year of multiple anniversaries for the Middle East. It is 100 years from the Balfour Declaration, in which a British government “viewed with favour” the emerging Zionist project for Jewish self- determination. It is also the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War, when Israel conquered its belligerent Arab neighbours in a stunning display of military power, and 40 years from Sadat’s famous speech to the Knesset.

For those with longer memories, this year also marks the 70th anniversary of the UN Partition Plan, when a majority in the General Assembly voted to carve out a Jewish and an Arab state in Palestine, a vote the Zionists accepted jubilantly and the Arab world unhesitatingly rejected. If the Arab world had shown some willing, the Palestinians would today be celebrating 70 years of their respective state.

But many forget that 2017 also marks the

80th anniversary of the first major plan for the division of the Jewish home, known as the Peel Commission Report. Its failure should have taught western policymakers valuable lessons about the real causes of the impasse.

The Peel Commission arrived in Palestine during the Arab revolt that was then engulfing the country. The revolt was a campaign of unrelenting, murderous terror unleashed by the viscerally anti-Semitic Grand Mufti, Mohammed Amin al-Husseini, and the Arab Higher Committee over which he presided.

The Commission, headed by the Viscount Peel, a former Secretary of State for India, was sent to examine the causes of the violence.

It concluded that the ‘irrepressible conflict’ between the Arab and Jewish national movements necessitated only one outcome: the termination of the mandate and the partition of the land into an Arab and Jewish state, with a British controlled corridor between Jaffa and Jerusalem. An exchange of populations was proposed, involving the transfer of 225,000 Arabs and some 1,250 Jews.

two parts, included the Jezreel Valley, the Galilee and much of the coastal plain but constituted less than one sixth of the country (and even that was less than one quarter of the original Palestine mandate). The Commission’s hope was that the plan would do “justice to the rights and aspirations of both the Arabs and the Jews” and bring “the inestimable boon of peace”.

What is striking, even today, is the sheer depth of Arab rejectionism, marked by the most intense hostility to the Zionist movement.

Egypt’s Prime Minister, Nahas Pasha, said that his country “could not regard with equanimity the prospect of an independent Jewish state...”

Both the Saudi King and the Iraqi prime minister denounced the partition proposals, with the latter declaring that any person who led a post-partition Palestine would “stab the Arab race in the heart” and “be regarded as an outcast throughout the Arab world”.

The Arab Higher Committee declared the proposals “incompatible with the justice promised by the British government” and called on neighbouring states to show unity in the face of such “injustice.” When the Mufti appeared before the Peel Commission to give evidence, he made it clear that Palestine had to be handed over to a sovereign Arab body, that such a body would not digest the Jewish population and Arab-Jewish cooperation was impossible.

Today Israel has diplomatic relations with some Arab states, backed by peace treaties, and there is extensive co-operation with the Palestinians in some areas. Meanwhile, Israel and the PA have tried to negotiate a final settlement of the conflict in recent decades.

Why you should back our campaign for refugee kids EDIE FRIEDMAN

t’s impossible to imagine what it must be like to hide for months in a forest near Calais, or live for years amid the squalor of an overcrowded refugee camp in Lebanon or Greece. But if you’re a young refugee on your own, that’s how you’re probably living – scared, lonely and at risk of trafficking or sexual abuse.

You have no possessions and no resources, only the memories of the death and destruction you witnessed daily back home, the fear and anxiety that you felt on the journey and uncertainty that you will ever make it to Britain, where your brother now lives.

Standing in the way of you being reunited with your family is the bureaucracy you meet at the camp.

There is a lack of proper, transparent information. As a result, many young people are left in limbo, sometimes for months.

So you may well feel that the only way to be

reunited with that brother means hiding in a sealed, airless container in the back of a lorry, or clinging onto its undercarriage.

If you ever make it to Britain in one piece, will officials believe your story? If you are reunited with your brother, what will it be like living with him? And will you be able to resume your education and become that teacher you always dreamt of being?

Seventeen-year-old Nabil from Syria is one of thousands of young refugees who know all about this kind of trauma. He found himself alone in Lebanon after fleeing his bombed home in Syria. Several of his family had been killed. Those who were alive were scattered far and wide, including his older brother, who was

living in safety in Scotland.

Boarding a plane to join his brother was not an option because, under UK immigration rules, siblings are not eligible for family reunion. Instead, he made his way alone, by land and sea, to France, nearly drowning when his boat capsized in the Aegean.

In France he endured six months in the Jungle in Calais, was held in detention and risked his life repeatedly in desperate attempts to reach his brother by boarding lorries to the UK. Then, after many months, Nabil discovered he was entitled to apply to join his brother under EU law. He is now in Scotland, waiting for a decision on his asylum application, and eager to start his life again.

New beginnings are something we think a lot about during Rosh Hashanah.

During this high holy day period, we have time to reflect on the many demands and obligations made on us – personal, societal, communal. We do this in the presence of our family, friends and community. It’s an appropriate time to think about other families in difficult circumstances, and how government action can enable some of them to be reunited and make a fresh start.

Our campaign, Let The Children In, asks the government to change British law to allow all refugee children who have close relatives in the UK to be allowed to join them promptly and safely, so they are protected and not forced into making dangerous journeys, risking exploitation at every turn in their attempt to reach the UK. Akiva Primary School’s Year 5 choir sang to clients and staff at Jewish Care’s Rubens House, as well as baking a delicious honey cake for the residents. Resident Sylvia Goldstein said: “Every year, I baked cakes for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and we always had a big gathering with the family. I think it’s a great idea to invite the children here to get ready for Rosh Hashanah.” The children said: “It was great to sing songs for Rosh Hashanah and make cake – eating the cake is the best bit.”

Janice Marriott Head of Tuffkid Nursery said: “This year, together with it being the start of our school year we are also lucky to celebrate Rosh Hashanah with our new intake of children. The children have absolutely loved getting involved in all the aspects of Rosh Hashanah especially blowing the shofar and enjoying some apple and honey. We like to make all the festivals as special as possible at Tuffkid and try to educate the children on as many aspects as we can in our classrooms, Rosh Hashanah is an ideal way to start our year.”

Camp Simcha brought the taste of the New Year to hospital wards in London with deliveries of honey cake. The charity’s hospital projects co-ordinator, Joanne Woolich, pictured with nurses from the renal ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital, said: “As well as Camp Simcha’s regular balloon and cuddly monkey and our seasonal gift deliveries to children, we take every opportunity we can to reach out to hospital staff. We ensure Camp Simcha is always in their minds for a referral when a child who could benefit from our support is admitted to their wards.”

Female members of Southend and Westcliffe Hebrew Congregation enjoyed an evening making honey cakes. Rebbetzin Chaya Faigie Bar, who organised the evening, gave a shiur where she discussed the symbolism behind eating honey and sweet food on Rosh Hashanah.

The women then donned their aprons and baked made more than 80 cakes, some of which were donated to local Jewish prisoners.

Peres, in his own words After so many years of rivalry and partnership, it was only during that summer that my respect for Rabin would become genuine admiration.

He and I had become targets of vile attacks, not just in the media, but on the streets. Opponents dressed our effigies in Nazi uniforms and burned them.

They marched in droves through the streets, at one point carrying a coffin meant for Rabin. It was horrifying.

I remember being told about one particularly shocking moment, as Rabin walked past the Wingate Institute in Netanya, between Haifa and Tel Aviv. The gathered crowd began to shout abominable things, swearing and screaming, and even spitting on the prime minister. Rabin didn’t change his pace or his expression; he walked past it all, head held high, giving off the aura of a man of conviction, a man too busy in his pursuit to be swayed by such vile behavior. He showed extraordinary courage in those dark days, refusing to back down no matter the personal price…

As violence at home continued to drain support for the peace process, Rabin feared that if elections were held, we were likely to lose. Recognizing that we had to recapture the enthusiasm for peace, and tamp down the preference for war, I suggested we hold a grand rally – a peace rally, one that would give us the chance to show the Israeli people that though the voices of peace were being drowned out by the shouting fury of the opposition, they hadn’t disappeared…

Rabin was anxious about the idea. “Shimon, what if it’s a failure?” he asked me in a latenight call a few evenings after we first discussed the idea. “What if the people don’t come?”

“They will come,” I promised him. Rabin and I arrived at the rally on November 4, 1995, to find a scene beyond

our wildest expectations. He was stunned to see more than a hundred thousand people, gathered together in peace, for peace, in what was then known as Kings of Israel Square…

Rabin had truly been taken by surprise. It was the happiest I’d ever seen him—possibly many decades of working together, I had never heard him sing. Now all of a sudden he was singing “Shir l’shalom,” the song of peace, out of a songbook he held in his hand. Even at the height of our greatest achievements, Rabin had never hugged me. All of a sudden, he hugged me.

As our time at the event drew to an end, we got ready to leave. On a knead to dough basis Shannon Sarna’s cookery book puts a mouthwatering spin on the most traditional of Jewish baked foods...

T

here’s challah – and then there’s something that turns tradition on its head, as a new cookbook sets out to prove.

Twists on the classic Jewish bread, like a pesto and goat cheese-stuffed challah or a banana bread chocolate chip challah may sound like the stuff of dreams, but have become reality thanks to Modern Jewish Baker by Shannon Sarna, editor of Jewish food blog The Nosher.

Here Shannon shares why challah inspired her to write a cookery book, why she loves experimenting with flavours and the best recipe for beginners to get baking with…

tomato, Kalamata olive and “everything” flavour, but rosemary garlic was always my favorite, and other people’s too. I’ve tried lots of flavours – including a spaghetti and meatballs-stuffed challah, which didn’t quite turn out the way I envisioned – but the first few Mediterranean-inspired flavours I experimented with were quite successful.

Challah is an incredibly forgiving bread that takes well to adding various sweet and savoury flavors, which is really the inspiration for the entire book: how to take a basic dough and add what appeals to you.

When did you first make non-traditional, or what you call “mixed-up” Jewish bread? Did it come out the way you thought it would?

The very first time I tried a mash-up was around 10 years ago, and it was a rosemary garlic challah — a little infusion of ItalianMediterranean flavours into the classic Jewish bread. From there, I tried sundried

How long did it take you to perfect the techniques and recipes in your book?

It depends on the recipe. I started baking with challah, and that’s the first recipe I really experimented with, so many of the challah recipes have been years and years in the making. Other recipes, such as the bagels, were newer additions. But it still took me trial after trial to get it right.

It has a shorter rise time and bakes up in literally three minutes or less. It’s also

Add another 1 ½ to 2 cups of the flour and mix thoroughly. Remove from the bowl and place on a floured surface. Knead the remaining ½ cup flour into the dough, continuing to knead for about five minutes. Add the raisins and incorporate them into the kneaded dough.

Place dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp towel. Allow to rise for at least three hours.

Divide the dough in two and plait the challahs into desired shape.

Place plaited challah on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Allow the challah to rise another 45 to 60 minutes, or until you can see the size has grown and the challah seems light. This step is very important to ensure a light and fluffy challah.

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C or 170ºC fan) while the dough rises.

Cinnamon raisin challah is a year-round classic, but it’s especially perfect for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, when it is practically a mitzvah to serve up sweet foods and breads to usher in a sweet year. If raisins aren’t your thing, swap them for dark or semisweet chocolate chips. This recipe also makes wonderful French toast or bread pudding – that is, if you have leftovers.

1½ tablespoons dry active yeast ½ cup + 2 tablespoons + ½ teaspoon sugar 1¼ cups lukewarm water 4½ to 5 cups unbleached bread flour 1½ teaspoons table salt ¼ cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons vanilla 1½ teaspoons cinnamon 2 large eggs 1 cup raisins

What does “modern” mean in the context of the book’s title?

When you look at my recipes and understand my background, they and I are far from traditional. Each recipe is rooted in tradition in some way, and each chapter explains the Jewish significance or origin of the recipe.

I think Jewish food, as we know, is having a moment – thoughtfully crafted deli sandwiches, gooey babka and Israeli imports like shakshuka, zaatar and labne now have mass appeal well beyond Jews, and so of course I hope Jews, and nonJews, will enjoy both the classic and not so classic Jewish recipes.

As a child of an interfaith marriage, I always have an eye towards providing avenues for meaningful engagement that are non-judgmental and positive. If someone has an interest or inclination towards exploring their Jewishness, and babka or bagel baking can be their “gateway drug”, then I am thrilled.

¼ cup spiced sugar (see right) ¼ teaspoon coarse sea salt For the dough: In a small bowl, place the yeast, ½ teaspoon sugar, and lukewarm water. Stir gently to mix. Allow to sit for five to 10 minutes, until it becomes foamy on top.

In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, mix together 1 ½ cups of the flour, salt, and ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar.

Add the water- yeast mixture, oil, vanilla, and cinnamon to the flour. Mix thoroughly.

Add another cup of the flour and two eggs and mix until smooth. Switch to the dough hook attachment if you are using a stand mixer.

For the topping: In a small bowl beat 2 egg yolks with 1 teaspoon water.

Brush the egg wash liberally over the challah. Sprinkle with Spiced Sugar and coarse sea salt.

Bake for 24 to 26 minutes, or until the colour is golden.

incredibly good – you can find a good challah in many places, but it’s pretty rare to find really good, fluffy pita bread.

What’s your favourite recipe in the book?

The spicy Pizza Rugelach. That’s partly because it was one of those rare recipes that came out exactly the way I envisioned it in my head and partially because I feel like it embodies my character: a spicy, delicious half-Italian, half-Jewish treat.

SPICED SUGAR Cinnamon sugar is an easy enough ingredient to throw together. But by adding some extra spices and salt, you can bring a delicious sweet and salty complexity to sweet challah, rugelach, and hamantaschen.

Makes about 1/2 cup.

Ingredients ½ cup sugar 1 ½ tablespoons cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ teaspoon sea salt Add all ingredients to a small bowl and combine. Store in an airtight container for up to two or three months.

I love the subtle saffron and coriander spices cooked in this tasty beef tagine. The generous garnish of fresh pomegranates provides beautiful colour to a great yom tov meal.

SERVES 6-8

COOKING TIME 2 HOUR 30 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS

2 Season the beef with salt and pepper. Fry in batches for about five

3 Turn down the heat and fry the onions, garlic and ginger for five minutes.

Stir in the flour and cook for one minute.

4 In a small pan, dry fry the spices for two minutes. Remove and transfer to a pestle and mortar. Crush the spices and then add to the tagine.

5 Pour in the saffron and stock and add the cinnamon sticks. Bring to the boil, cover with a lid and simmer for two hours.

6 Add the lemon and simmer for a final 15 minutes.

7 To serve the stylish way: Garnish with sprigs of fresh parsley and a generous sprinkling of pomegranate seeds. Serve with couscous or basmati rice.

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about… Abortion

BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS As Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat this year, there is no parsha between Yom Kippur and Succot, so we read Ha’azinu.

Most of the parsha is written in two columns, to represent that Moses calls upon the heavens and the earth to bear witness to his last song.

The logic in the curious phrase above is that the heavens and the earth will be there for a long time after the human witnesses have died and stand forever to maintain Moses’ words.

When Moses says “give ear, heavens” at the start of the parsha, the Midrash says they fell silent. When we incline our ear to the Torah, then all will remain silent before us and listen when we start to speak words of Torah.

This Shabbat is Shabbat Shuva, when we read the great Haftorah of that name. It is aimed at encouraging us to turn away from our sins and towards mitzvot. Coming as it does in the Ten Days of Repentance, it is most appropriate for the season that we read this parsha.

Changing our ways and growing as humans requires us to listen – to each other, as we mend our relationships between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and to God, as we face Yom Kippur and try to make ourselves fit and whole Jews again.

When we read the Torah, we hear God’s voice, but the heavens and the earth are silenced for us, too, as they were for Moses. In that silence we can hear the divine dictates of our Holy Law, and can turn towards Him and away from our errors.

The Jewish view is that human life is sacred. Therefore, aborting a foetus is forbidden.

As the Talmud expresses the concept, the blood of one attacker is not thicker [more worthy] than the blood of the victim.

So while the Torah declares all life sacred, not all abortions are forbidden, precisely because life is so sacred that no one person has the right to take another.

Furthermore, the foetus is not a person in law. Judaism teaches that murder cannot be committed against a foetus until its head exits its mother’s womb.

It is true that the embryo has a heartbeat at six weeks, that it is a fully formed embryo by eight weeks and is viable after 20 weeks.

Therefore, all decisions to abort should factor in the stage of pregnancy.

‘God does not pardon’

Anti-Semitism must not come to define us

BY RABBI NEIL JANES “The Lord, the Lord, a God of mercy and compassion, slow to anger, generous in love and truth, showing love to thousands, forgiving sin, wrong and failure, who pardons.”

The first time I studied these ‘13 attributes of God’, which we repeat throughout this penitential period, was with my teacher, Rabbi Professor Jonathan Magonet.

It was then I discovered the Biblical source is not quite so forgiving. In Exodus, the full phrase ends not with “who pardons” but “who will by no means pardon and visiting the sins of the fathers on the children and the children of the children to the third and fourth generation.” (Exodus 34:7).

Wait a minute, I thought. We spend all this time praying to a God who will not pardon, even to third and fourth generations! It does not make sense.

Surely children should not be held accountable for their parents’ actions?

Of course, the text is multi-layered with many authors and this is not the

only view of God in the Bible.

But, nonetheless, even if we suppose this only means punishing the unrepentant it still seems unfair, scandalous.

Then comes what I called in a Lyons Learning Project class, a moment of liturgical chutzpah. The prayerbook drops this phrase altogether and, with a cleverly placed full stop, the liturgists even reverse a ‘will not pardon’ and turn it into ‘who pardons’.

It’s not that the ancient liturgists did not believe the words of the Torah, but rather how can we stand in synagogue and speak to God who punishes generationally.

So, we misquote God’s words back, as if to say: please only pay attention to being ‘merciful’.

I suppose, if we can have such chutzpah with God, maybe we can be a little bit more forgiving of ourselves and others too.

BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY The latest study from the Institute for Jewish Policy Research, with its headline statistic that more than a quarter of British people hold at least one anti-Semitic view, caused a stir.

Anti-Semitism has preoccupied our British Jewish community for quite a while, so it is interesting to see a report that tries to set out the figures so clearly.

Perhaps the most important quantitative reminder for the Jewish community is one lost in the headlines. The study found we are well liked, especially when compared to other minorities, and levels of antiSemitism in Great Britain are among the lowest in the world.

Of course, that does not mean there are no issues. It is clear there are areas in Britain where the levels of anti-Semitism have grown, or at least where people have felt more comfortable to express them.

Liberal Judaism is probably unique among the religious

Jewish movements in the UK in that, predominantly, our shuls and communities are not in large Jewish areas. Often our members find their children are the only Jewish child in the school and they work in environments where there aren’t other Jews.

Certainly the majority of messages we have from congregants and congregations, of their involvement in the wider communities they inhabit is overwhelmingly positive, with many playing roles in interfaith and education.

That said, anecdotally we find that their experiences, if any, of antiSemitism come from ignorance from

those they encounter and that they are held responsible for any actions of the Israeli government that are deemed cruel or unjustified.

We, therefore, must give our congregants the confidence to tackle casual anti-Semitism, as well as help people identify what is genuine criticism of the Israeli government and what is anti-Semitic.

However, we must also continue to celebrate our positive interactions with society at large. We must continue to educate and interact, to be more outward facing and open to discussion.

While tackling anti-Semitism head on, we must also ensure that it does not come to define us.

It would be a sad reflection of the overwhelmingly positive Jewish experience in the UK if that was the main focus of conversation.  Rabbi Charley Baginsky is Liberal Judaism’s director of strategy and partnerships

this appears logical, it is fraught with problems.

When we ship your household and personal effects in a sole-use container, the container is sealed immediately after loading and that seal is generally not then broken until the container arrives outside your residence in Israel.

With a container of effects going to more than one residence, Israeli Customs require the container to be unloaded into a bonded store at the port and clearance takes place for each consignee in the port.

This adds considerably to the shipping costs (port labour is not cheap) and also we have to case

each shipment separately or palletise everything separately for ease of handling and security.

Again, this adds to the costs.

For very small shipments, this groupage service works well and is cost effective – but not for larger shipments.

I’m aware that some companies offer a service whereby they mix the effects of two families into one container and then declare them to Customs under one name. We will not do this.

Apart from being illegal, you run the risk of a heavy fine or worse if customs (either in the UK or Israel) choose to inspect the container and discover this.

My advice is to keep it legal.

Lions off to winning start

Maccabi London Lions Under 14s White began their season in style by claiming an impressive 2-0 win at Berkhamsted FC. The game in the Watford Friendly League Red Division, also saw the team play on a full size pitch for the first time. Kids on a high after mountain trek Twelve-year-old Sammy Garfinkel was one of 27 bar and batmitzvah kids who scaled new heights as they raised £20,000 for charity with a sponsored hike and mountain climb in the Lake District. Accompanied by their parents, the 57-strong group from north-west London completed a 15km around Lake Derwen, before embarking on a seven-hour climb up Helvellyn mountain – England’s third highest peak at 3,117ft.

Sammy chose to raise money for GIFT, with Camp Simcha, Bet Halochem, Gesher, Emunah and Wateraid among the other charities to benefit from the climb. Organised by Sarah Sultman and Matthew and Natalie Jackson, from Mill Hill Shul, Sarah said: “Everyone had a truly memorable and spectacular weekend.”

British athlete Karina Kaufmann wants to inspire “mums and dads find a sport they love” after being one of the fastest female triathletes at the World Sprint Triathlon Championships.

Competing in the 35-39 age group category in Amsterdam, the 36-year-old finished the race in 17th place. She said: “I’m very pleased with being the 17th fastest female triathlete in the world

in my age group. Obviously, I would have loved to have finished higher, but unfortunately my swim wasn’t good enough.”

Recalling an “amazing experience”, which saw her complete a 20km cycle, 5km run and 750m swim, she said: “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my friends, family and sponsor Skybound Capital. Although triathlon is an individual sport, there was such a good feeling to be part of something bigger and I had a great group of athletes to share it with.”

Looking ahead to future tournaments, the mother-of-four added: “This is just the start! I’m already planning my next attempt, which will probably be duathlon – run/cycle/run – which should be good for me as it builds on my two best disciplines. I [do though] really want to improve my swimming so I

can finish even higher in triathlon next time.

“But for now, I’m back to my family and my personal training business. I’m looking forward to using my experiences to help other mums and dads get fit and build a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their family. I want to get people outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and having fun. I hope I’ve inspired other mums and dads to find a sport they love.”

Ryder Cup legend swings by for charity GOLF Former Ryder Cup player and captain Bernard Gallacher was special guest at the Michael Green Diabetes Foundation’s first charity golf day.

Speaking at the event, which saw 104 golfers help raise £30,000, Gallacher said: “It was great to see everyone out on the course getting behind such a brilliant charity.

“It’s important that we raise as much awareness as possible about diabetes. Golf is a great form of exercise and I hope today’s fundraiser has helped raise much needed funds and awareness”.
