Israeli embassy in London. It also reports that arrangements were made directly with Patel and not via the UK Foreign Office.

The Labour Party is set to continue pressing for more information about how much – and when – the prime minister knew about Patel’s meetings. Shadow international development secretary Kate Osamor said May must either get control of her “decaying government” following the resignation of Patel or step aside and let Labour govern. And deputy Labour leader Tom Watson has written to May demanding answers about officials’ knowledge of Patel’s activities.

Osamor said: “After denying the allegations, then repeatedly changing her story and failing to disclose all of her meetings, it is right that she has now resigned. But

Sir Malcolm Rifkind, a former foreign secretary who – like Patel – spoke at the Jewish News-BICOM UK-Israel Policy Conference in Westminster last week, said it was not in itself unusual to hold business meetings with a country’s leaders while on holiday, adding that he did likewise several times. However, he said: “What made it unacceptable was that she not only did not inform the Foreign Office but the local British ambassador didn’t know either. If you’re a secretary of state having meetings with ministers of another country, the ambassador keeps a record of the meeting.

If you’re not accompanied, you won’t have that record, which is in itself very foolish. It’s just common sense.”

‘I have long admired Israel’ Just hours before former Secretary of State for International Development, Priti Patel, first came under fire for holding secret meetings with ministers in Israel, she told a Jewish News-BICOM conference of her determination to extend collaboration between Britain and Israel.

Described by fellow MP Theresa Villiers as one of Israel’s staunchest friends in Parliament, the beleagured MP for Witham in Essex, said she was proud of the role Britain had played in “helping to make a homeland for the Jewish

people” and said that the Balfour centenary should be celebrated with pride.

“It is vital that we look forward to establishing security and justice for both Israelis and Palestinians,” she said, adding that Britain, a “close and reliable friend of Israel”, with a strong relationship based on “decades of co-operation”, was well placed to help that happen.

Britain’s commitment to Israel’s security remained “unwavering”, Patel said, but added that there was “more than just a security challenge”

Jewish News site hacked

by Turkish terror group The Jewish News website was hacked by a Turkish group on the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.

The newspaper’s homepage featured an image of children waving a Turkish flag and a line that apparently vowed to protect “Palestine” and Gaza.

Underneath that was a Koran verse that reads, in part, “And they wronged Us not — but they were [only] wronging themselves.” It was written in Turkish, Arabic and English.

The page was signed by the group Akincilar, which hacked multiple Dutch websites earlier this year.

That attack came after Turkey and the Netherlands had a political falling out in the wake of Turkish president

Its homepage led to the same Akincilar page. The disruption lasted for about four hours.

A rabbi has expressed “concern” about the behaviour of a policeman who allegedly told a Charedi man in north London to “get lost” after he witnessed and reported an antiSemitic incident targeting young girls.

The Charedi man said children “targeted young Jewish girls by shouting abuse at them, leaving them... fearing for their safety” in Warwick Grove, Hackney. As a police car arrived, he says the officer asked him: “Did you just call police for 10-year-old kids?”

When the man confirmed he had, he says the police officer replied: “Get lost” and sped away from the scene.

Rabbi Herschel Gluck, of neighbourhood watch Shomrim, said: “I have been in contact with senior Metropolitan Police officers and called for a full investigation.”

A former chairman of Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel has been appointed as a deputy speaker of the House of Lords.

Lord Monroe Palmer, who also served as a Barnet councillor and treasurer of his party, will take up the role this month.

Describing the position as a “great honour”, he said: “This new role does not mean that I will be unable to speak on political issues such as in support of Israel and matters of concern to the UK Jewish community.”

He added: “I will continue to be the Liberal Democrats’ spokesman on taxation in the Upper House.”

Lord Palmer, one of the most consistently vocal supporters of Israel in Parliament, will sit on the Woolsack when The Lord Speaker is not present.

The prime ministers of Britain and Israel, former UK prime minister Tony Blair, former US secretary of state John Kerry, the Chief Rabbi and the Archbishop of Canterbury gathered at London’s Lancaster House for a dinner to mark the Balfour Declaration centenary.

The event, organised by the Balfour 100 Committee, was hosted by Lord Rothschild, great-nephew of the second Baron Rothschild, to whom then Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour addressed his historic letter in November 1917.

Lord Balfour, a descendant of the politician, was co-host.

The Declaration itself, on loan from the British Library archives, was also on display.

Addressing the 150 guests, Theresa May set out a red line over the Balfour Declaration: “When some people suggest we should apologise for this letter, I say, absolutely not”.

Britain, she said, was “proud” of its pioneering role in the creation of the state of Israel. “We are proud to stand here today together with Prime Minister Netanyahu

and declare our support for Israel. And we are proud of the relationship we have built with Israel,” she added.

Theresa May said Britain remained “committed to Israel’s security”, and that it would “always support Israel’s right to defend itself”.

However, she said, there was still “unfinished business” with Balfour, because “his fundamental vision of peaceful co-existence has not yet been fulfilled”.

May reiterated her belief that any peace deal must be based on a two-state solution “with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. Let us be honest with each other.

There will need to be compromises from each side if we are to have a realistic chance of achieving this goal – including an end to the building of new settlements and an end to Palestinian incitement too”.

But, she said, Balfour’s

vision of peaceful co-existence did not include boycotts of Israel – “they are unacceptable and this government will have no truck with those who subscribe to them”.

Welcoming the remarks, Benjamin Netanyahu said Britain had shown itself to be “on the right side of history”.

He added that the “tragedy” of Balfour was it took three decades to fulfil its promise — “too late for one third of Jews who died in the Holocaust”.

The head of Britain’s diplomatic service has said Lord Balfour “wanted his words to have historic effect” but his Declaration would have included the right of Palestinian self-determination if written a few decades later, writes Jenni Frazer.

Sir Simon McDonald, Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, made the comments during a keynote speech at Portcullis House, Westminster.

Speaking at the start of the Jewish News-BICOM policy conference considering Britain, Israel and the Middle East 100 years after Balfour, McDonald said the 67-word letter “set the tone for UK-Israel relations” built up over decades.

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited British Prime Minister Theresa May in London, McDonald said the UK was “a close friend of Israel and has an unshakeable commitment to Israel’s right to exist, and its security”.

McDonald, who entered the diplomatic service more than 35 years ago,

acknowledged that the Middle East is a region “not without controversy in analysing trends”.

He said: “When trying to make sense of the present, we cannot ignore the controversies of the past, and we cannot ignore the negative feeling from Palestinians and the Arab world about the Balfour Declaration that still persist today.”

As an historian, McDonald said he was interested in the historical, political, military, diplomatic and moral forces motivating Balfour and the War Cabinet in 1917, asking how critical the Declaration was in Israel’s creation.

McDonald said his predecessor in 1917, Lord Harding, a 23-year-old peer, opposed the Declaration with reason. Harding was not unsympathetic to the Zionist cause, but against the document because he “distrusted general pledges” and had “concerns about backing a movement based on conditions we cannot enforce”.

McDonald said of Harding: “He was right, because in the end the Balfour Declaration was important,

but it was the hope, energy, determination and ingenuity of Jewish immigrants to Mandate Palestine, as well as the hundreds of thousands of Holocaust survivors, that led to the creation of Israel, 31 years after Balfour’s declaration.” He added: “As we work on advancing the UK-Israel relationship, it is important we also work to fulfil all the Declaration.”

The second part, saying “nothing shall be done to prejudice the civil and religious rights of the existing nonJewish communities in Palestine” was still “unfinished business”.

McDonald said: “If written after the Second World War, when the international community developed a rules-based international architecture, the Declaration would have included the political rights of self-determination of these communities too.”

He added: “We want to see a lasting peace that fulfils the whole of the Balfour Declaration.”

The president of the IsraelJewish Congress (IJC), Vladimir Sloutsker, told the audience at the third Jewish News-BICOM strategic conference that Lord Balfour would have been astonished at what Israel had become, and commended the shared sense of dynamism, innovation and creativity linking Britain and Israel.

Sloutsker, who co-founded the IJC in 2012, said: “Though unimaginable just 100 years ago, Lord Balfour would no doubt be incredibly proud at the closeness of ties between the UK and Israel today, ties that are grounded in our shared values of freedom, democ-

racy and human rights and a common future underpinned by economic prosperity, innovation and a constant desire for peace.”

Nevertheless, besides the close trade links – the UK is Israel’s biggest trading partner in Europe – Sloutsker struck a pessimistic note when he warned of the continuing dangers of terrorism and extremism.

“As with anti-Semitism, we know what starts with the Jews never ends with the Jews,” he said. “So with terrorism – what starts with Israel never ends with Israel. And we also know that terror is terror is terror, wherever it occurs.”

Israel remained a vital ally in the front line against the war on terror, Sloutsker said, and “in protecting democratic values the world over”.

At least a dozen Holocaust memorial stones were stolen in Berlin ahead of the anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom.

The Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are cobblestone-sized monuments embedded in pavements in Berlin and other cities in Germany and across Europe.

On Monday, the memorials were dug up and stolen on several streets in the Neukölln neighborhood, Deutch Welle reported. [JTA]

An Israeli footballer collapsed and went into cardiac arrest after being hit in the chest by a ball on Tuesday, but was saved by the team masseur and an ambulance crew who were in the area and administered electric shocks to restart his heart.

‘Mark Balfour by recognising Palestine,’ urges Thornberry Despite giving one of her most pro-Israel speeches to the audience at the Jewish News/Bicom Balfour 100 event, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, Emily Thornberry, left listeners in no doubt where she stood on whether the Balfour centenary should be “celebrated” or “marked”.

Answering a question from Unite union leader Len McCluskey, Thornberry said unequivocally: “We should mark Balfour by recognising the state of Palestine”.

In her remarks, Thornberry, who took the place of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at the Balfour 100 banquet held last Thursday, said she frequently reminded colleagues that “Labour’s support for Zionism and the establishment of a Jewish state pre-dates even the Balfour Declaration, stating plainly that this state must be open ‘to which such of the Jewish people as desire to do so may return and work out their salvation, free from interference by those of alien race and religion’”.

Modern Israel, she said, “still stands out as a beacon of freedom, equality and democracy, particularly in respect of women and LGBT communities, in a region where oppression, discrimination, and inequality is too often the norm”.

She said she saluted “the resilience and

strength of the Israeli state and the Israeli people against all those who have sought to harm and destroy them: a resilience that has had constantly to adapt as the threats over the years have changed from the conventional warfare of 50 years ago to the ever-shifting tactics of terrorists today”.

And she made clear, as she had when speaking to the Labour Friends of Palestine at the party’s Brighton conference in September, that “anyone who believes in a two-state solution loses all right to a hearing if they simultaneously indulge those who deny one of those states its very

right to exist”.

Nevertheless, Thornberry maintained, Balfour’s Declaration contained “unfinished business”. She observed: “We see actions taken on a daily basis that seem to entrench division ever deeper, to the point where the gap will be impossible to bridge”.

Such actions included “the despicable practice of glorifying terrorism to children, by naming schools after suicide bombers”, or “the way in which support for illegal settlement-building and the demolition of Palestinian homes has become almost a political purity test for some in the Knesset”.

Thornberry concluded: “While marking this centenary, we must also be honest and say that, until Jewish communities all over the world are free from the threat of terror, and the scourge of anti-Semitism, until the rights of the Palestinian people are secure and we have a viable, secure, internationally-recognised Palestinian state, living side-by-side, in peace and security, with the state of Israel, then the work that Balfour started cannot be considered complete.”

Taking questions, she agreed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was a Zionist.

If Zionism was the belief in a Jewish state of Israel, she said, then “of course, it’s selfevident” he is a Zionist.

Experts on Middle East diplomacy discussed the current challenges and future opportunities in the region at last week’s conference.

Former head of Israeli military intelligence, Maj. Gen. Amos Gilad said the so-called “Shi’ite crescent is going to happen,” in reference to Iran’s arc of influence stretching from Tehran through Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, adding: “This is our most serious challenge.”

The retired general who now heads the Institute for Policy and Strategy, said the nuclear deal reached between Iran and world powers in 2015 was “the worst”.

He said that while Iran was

“planning special problems for Israel”, Saudi Arabia was Iran’s number one enemy, in agreement with Sir John Jenkins, former UK ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iraq, Syria and Burma.

Jenkins, head of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, focusing on the Middle East during a panel hosted

by Jonathan Freedland, said: “I don’t see it turning into a conflict, because Saudi Arabia would lose”.

McCluskey: Israeli policy is ‘conquest by concrete’ Perhaps the most unexpected participant at the Bicom/Jewish News conference, the left-wing Unite union leader Len McCluskey, received an unequivocal answer from independent Knesset member Einat Wilf when he asked if Britain should recognise a Palestinian state – “without preconditions” – as a way of “moving forward the second part of the Balfour Declaration”, writes Jenni Frazer.

Wilf, now a foreign policy adviser and lecturer, left McCluskey in no doubt. She said: “The recognition of the state of Palestine, without a clear position that rejects the maximalist claims in the form of return to the State of Israel, does nothing to further peace – it actually pushes it away by kindling the hope and the idea that Israel can be rolled back.”

McCluskey, attending the first panel session on the causes and consequences of the Balfour Declaration, also asked a pointed question about settlements, which, he said, had been described as “conquest by concrete”.

But Wilf responded: “I fully support the international community saying we recognise Jewish self-

determination within the [1967] Green Line, but despite the historical connection between the Jews and Judea, we say it has to stop at the Green Line, and there cannot be a Jewish right to the West Bank.

“But there has to be an equally powerful statement that says we recognise the Palestinian right to self-determination in the West Bank and Gaza, but completely deny and reject any Arab Palestinian maximalist claim west of the line.”Both such elements, she said, had to be in place for peace initiatives to progress.

Wilf’s was one of three strong presentations in the first panel, chaired by Professor Alan Johnson, editor of the Bicom publication Fathom, who said he wanted the kind of wideranging discussion reflected in its pages.

And so, the audience first heard a historical

overview of Balfour from Professor Jonathan Schneer, professor of modern British history at Atlanta’s Georgia Tech university.

Speaking by Skype from his home in East Jerusalem, veteran journalist and former Palestinian government spokesman Elias Zananiri, gave a gloomy analysis of the causes and consequences of the Declaration. He said rather than “celebrating” the centenary, Palestinians believed it should be “a day of atonement for the UK”.

For the Palestinians, he said, the declaration was totally unjust to promise a national homeland for Jews at the expense of the political rights of the indigenous peoples. Zananiri spoke of “a huge amount of frustration” on the part of the Palestinians, adding bitterly: “Is it enough to support the two-

He made it clear there was “no need to address the question of Israel’s existence: “Israel is here to stay, that is not to be denied,” adding the PLO had previously recognised Israel’s right to exist “in secure and safe borders in the Middle East”.

Zananiri added: “This injustice has been accumulating year after year. The Israeli government can’t demand peace on one hand and give the Palestinians nothing.”

Dr Wilf entitled her presentation “Thank you, Lord Balfour, we’ll take it from here”, and said the success

of Balfour had been in triggering “a deliberate Jewish, specifically a deliberate Zionist action”, so Jews could create a state for themselves.

“That was the factor that mattered’, she declared, “it was the success of the Zionist spirit and the first major diplomatic success of the Zionist movement.”

Sunni states ‘ready for Israel’ Israel’s Opposition leader has said Sunni states in the region are now finally “ready to accept” Israel, 70 years after the state was born and 100 years after the British government pledged to support it, writes Stephen Orysczuk.

Isaac Herzog, leader of Zionist Union in the Israeli parliament, made the comments during the Jewish News-BICOM UK-Israel policy conference at Westminster last Thursday, held in association with Balfour 100.

Herzog has close family ties to the UK – his grandfather was brought up in Leeds and went on to become the Chief Rabbi both of Ireland and British Mandate Palestine, while his father served with distinction in the British Army before serving in the IDF, later becoming the sixth Israeli president.

Herzog, who praised Lord Jacob Rothschild as “one of the greatest Jewish leaders of our time”, was recently deposed as leader of Israel’s

second largest party, but new leader Abi Gabay is not a member of the Knesset, so Herzog retains the title of Leader of the Opposition.

In his address at Portcullis House, he said Lord Balfour declared the British government’s support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine in “almost biblical circumstances 100 years ago, as Australian and New Zealand forces attacked Egyptian troops at the Battle of Beersheba”.

Herzog added: “Without that battle, the Balfour Declaration may have stayed just another piece of paper. But once British forces had entered Palestine and [General] Sir Edmund Allenby entered Jerusalem, that was really the message that resonated with the Zionist movement.”

On today’s world, he sought to strike a more optimistic tone, saying “for the first time in many years, there may be an opening for some sort of future arrangement in Syria”, after a period of

“the worst manslaughter in modern history”.

But he warned against a “smart” Iranian strategy, saying: “They know what they want to get. If you want to understand their philosophy you have to listen to their leaders, who say constantly ‘we want to annihilate Israel’. That’s the story.” He said Iran wanted “to radicalise the whole region” and referred to a “clash of two major coalitions”, meaning Iran and its proxies versus Sunni states led by Saudi Arabia and backed by the United States.

“Which side are we when this clash erupts?” asked Herzog. “This has led to a coalition of moderate Sunni nations, which is willing and talking to Israel and is open to further cooperation because of a convergence of interests.”

Israel’s unlikely new allies, including Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Oman, “are going through dramatic changes,” said Herzog. “It is setting up a prec-

edent whereby they are willing – after 70 years, and 100 years since the Balfour Declaration – to accept Israel in the region.”

Hinting at under-the-radar relations, he added: “Underneath a certain crust there is more cooperation than one understands.”

RIFKIND: OCCUPATION ‘INDEFINITE’ British former foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind has said he fears Israel intends to maintain a military occupation of the Palestinian territories “indefinitely”.

Sir Malcolm, who was Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in the 1990s and was the first to commit Britain to a two-state solution, made the comments during a keynote speech at Portcullis House, Westminster.

Speaking at the beginning of the Bicom-Jewish News policy conference considering Britain, Israel and the Middle East 100 years after the Balfour Declaration, the former Conservative minister said he feared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had no desire to end the occupation.

Sir Malcolm said support for the two-state solution “goes back to the Peel Commission of 1937”, but that the practical difficulties in delivering two states in 2017 were numerous.

He added: “What disturbs me is that I suspect the Israeli government, Netanyahu and his colleagues, essentially are happy to live with a status quo

indefinitely, not just for a year or so, or five years, but on an open-ended basis.”

Sir Malcolm said he suspected the Israeli government sought no change in political status because settlement building was creating “facts on the ground, and Israel’s position will become stronger, its territorial position will be extended further”.

He was speaking on a panel including Dr Claire Spencer of Chatham House and journalist Anton La Guardia, the latter expressing concern about the

“ethno-nationalist” trends found in Israeli politics today.

Spencer said that, 100 years after Balfour’s Declaration, Palestinians faced economic and employment problems, but dismissed the “mythology that there is no partner on the other side”.

Sir Malcolm said it was a “tragedy” that at the moment no one was seeking to negotiate a two-state solution, and rebuffed suggestions from the floor that the West Bank was not “occupied” but rather “disputed”.

Three of Britain’s best-known Jewish authors have said they are concerned anti-Zionism in the Labour Party is becoming “indistinguishable” from anti-Semitism.

In an open letter to The Times, Howard Jacobson, Simon Sebag Montefiore and Simon Schama say they are “troubled” by the party’s “tone and direction of debate about Israel and Zionism”. The trio say: “Zionism is the right of the Jewish people to selfdetermination. We believe anti-Zionism, with its antiSemitic characteristics, has no place in a civil society.”

“Such themes and language have become widespread in Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party,” they further add.

An angry director of the Labour Friends of Israel, Jennifer Gerber, this week condemned Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, for an “utterly unacceptable” appearance at a Mend event in Parliament.

Mend was marking the start of Islamophobia Awareness Month but three MPs scheduled to speak withdrew over reported extremist remarks associated with the group. Corbyn, however, put in a surprise appearance and spoke at the event, prompting an outraged response from Labour Friends of Israel.

Gerber said: ”Mend has repeatedly peddled myths about the power of the ‘Israeli lobby’, that play into classic anti-Semitic tropes.”

MUSICIAN SURVIVOR, 95,DIES IN JERUSALEM

Holocaust survivor Tzipora Jochsberger (pictured), who was a director of the Rubin Academy for Music and Dance in Israel, has died.

Jochsberger, a composer, musicologist and educator, survived thanks to to her musical abilities.

She died in Jerusalem, aged 96.

Jochsberger was born in Germany in 1920, studied music from the age of eight, and in 1934 entered the Jewish Teachers’ Seminary in Wüerzberg – one of the few schools of higher learning available to Jews in Germany at the time.

In 1939, she left Nazi Germany to accept an invitation from the Palestine Academy of Music to study in Jerusalem.

Her parents stayed behind and were later deported to Auschwitz, where they died. Jewish Women’s Archive described her acceptance to the Palestine Academy as “good fortune that ultimately saved her life”.

‘Hamas link’ to London mosque A trustee of Finsbury Park Mosque is reported to be a topranking member of Hamas.

According to The Times, trustee Mohammed Sawalha is a member of the political bureau of Hamas, despite it being proscribed as a terrorist group, and he is believed to have travelled to Moscow in September to meet Russian diplomats to discuss the Middle East conflict.

Jewish community figures in the UK this week suggested the revelations may warrant an investigation by the Charity Commission, given Sawalha’s role.

Mark Gardner, communications director at the Community Security Trust, said reports about Sawalha’s senior position in Hamas came as “no surprise” to his organisation, which is charged with protecting the Jewish community.

He added: “While it is not surprising, it is also very important, because British and UK-based Islamists routinely deny and obscure their links to overseas movements. Also, it of

course raises questions about his suitability to be a charity trustee.”

Sawalha is understood to have held a meeting with Mikhail Bogdanov, President Vladimir Putin’s Middle East envoy and a deputy foreign minister, despite Hamas being deemed a terrorist organisation by the US and the EU. In some countries Hamas members can be jailed, but the UK has banned only its military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, meaning that Sawalha has committed no offence.

Sawalha, 56, was reportedly named in US court documents from 2008 as having previously been “in charge of Hamas terrorist operations in the West Bank” and had met two men accused of laundering millions of dollars to finance the group.

He is understood to have organised convoys to Gaza, although it is unclear whether he has done so since becoming a trustee of Finsbury Park Mosque in 2010.

One of Britain’s leading Jewish historians, Professor Colin Shindler, told a London audience this week that he believed Palestinians had “shot themselves in the foot” by opposing the celebrations of the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, because by doing so they had lent support to the delegitimisation of the Jewish state.

Along with East Anglia University professor of diplomatic history Thomas Otte, Shindler addressed a joint meeting of the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel (LDFI) and the Lloyd George Society as part of the Balfour 100 commemorations.

As both historians made clear, the letter from Conservative Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, on November 2 1917, was the work of many hands.

Otte said, in a nod to Palestinian hopes: “Miracles are possible in the Middle East, but without a sense of realism, they will take a lot longer to achieve.”

SURVIVOR TALKS TO YOUNG FOOTBALLERS The Holocaust Educational Trust paid a special visit to Liverpool’s Academy Football Club this week, as Shoah survivor Zigi Shipper gave a talk to members of three teenage squads.

Shipper shared his experiences during the Holocaust and took questions from the youngsters before being pre-

sented with a personalised Liverpool football shirt.

Under 18s captain Liam Coyle said: “It was a real privilege for the lads to be able to listen to Zigi’s story to gain a better understanding of the traumatic experiences that he and the other millions of people impacted by the Holocaust, went through.

“We would like to thank Zigi for visiting the academy to share his experiences and hope to welcome him back to Kirkby in the near future.”

Milibands learn family’s Shoah fate David Miliband has revealed how he and his brother Ed recently accompanied their mother and aunt on a “very moving” visit to Germany after finally learning where their grandfather died.

The paper trail for David Kozak, the brothers’ maternal grandfather, had ended at Auschwitz until this year, when a German historical society made contact, saying it had traced Kozak’s death to a small concentration camp near the southern town of Hailfingen.

“It was important for both of us that we went on this visit with my mother and our aunt,” said David Miliband, speaking the The Sunday Times magazine last weekend. “It was very, very moving.”

Hadassa were separated from their father at a young age and were sheltered by local Poles.

Kozak was one of 43 members of the family killed during the Holocaust.

David, who was foreign secretary

under Tony Blair, left politics in 2010 to head up an American charity after his brother Ed successfully fought him for the leadership of the Labour Party.

Ed secured victory by offering concessions to unions, but the nature of the brothers’ battle left deep scars, and the two barely spoke for years.

David, whose views were considered more centrist than younger sibling Ed’s, this week took aim at current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for his record on anti-Semitism, asking: “Why ever say this is overblown?”

He added: “It’s so disgusting that you’ve just got to be really vigilant. If there’s prejudice against Pakistanis, you call it out – you don’t just say, ‘All racism is bad’. It’s got to be called out in the party.”

Harman refuses to apologise for ‘bad taste’ example The veteran Labour MP Harriet Harman has ignored a call from the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) for her to apologise after retelling an anti-Semitic “joke” on Andrew Neil’s This Week show on the BBC.

Harman, former deputy leader of the Labour Party and the longest continuously-serving woman MP, was taking part in a discussion about “bad taste” jokes.

She said: “I’ve long been accused of being a humourless feminist and I’ll give you two examples I protested about because they were offensive and hurtful.”

She then mentioned a rag magazine published by Guy’s Hospital in her early years as an MP, and – before re-telling the “joke” – claimed “people like Andrew [Neil] say that these things are all right”.

But when Harman re-told the offensive joke, concluding “that is not funny”, Neil was outraged and refused to let her continue with her second

example or to defend herself. Later on social media, Neil wrote: “What was wrong was 1) Even to tell that so-called joke on live TV. 2) Claim I would like the joke. Appalling on both counts.”

JLC boss Simon Johnson said: “Harriet Harman must surely know better than to repeat a vile Holocaust joke, irrespective of the point she was trying to make. She must apologise, and quickly.”

CHAREDI MEN ARE PELTED WITH ONIONS IN STAMFORD HILL Police have appealed for witnesses after two Charedi men were pelted with onions from a car in Stamford Hill. Volunteer security force Shomrim said the incident on Sunday evening in the Amhurst Park area was an “unprovoked attack”. BY ANTI-SEMITISM An Israeli businessman has claimed he and his family are being “hounded out” of Scotland by anti-Semitic protesters. Nissan Ayalon, who sells Israeli cosmetics made from Dead Sea minerals in Aberdeen, has described the treatment as “a game of chase the Jew”.

His protests have been dismissed by the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, which says it is neither racist nor anti-Semitic, but objects to Ayalon selling Israeli products in the country.

Lord Kestenbaum hailed Lord Rothschild for ‘inspiring’ nationwide events for Balfour

Lord Rothschild was this week hailed for “inspiring” nationwide events marking the centenary of the Balfour Declaration as the community’s commemorations drew to a close at Bevis Marks Synagogue.

A post-Shabbat service hosted by the country’s oldest community ended a week of events that included a public lecture by historian Simon Schama, a grand dinner involving the prime ministers of the UK and Israel, and special activities in shuls and schools.

Lord Kestenbaum, who chaired the Balfour 100 group that oversaw more than 160 commemorations, told a 400-strong congregation how the road to the events began a year ago when the current Lord Rothschild met community leaders a stone’s

throw from where his relative received the historic letter in which Britain expressed support for a Jewish home in Palestine.

Invoking the first three words of the declaration, he told Lord Rothschild: “You inspired an unprecedented set of activities to mark this historic centenary. They have been good natured. They have unified; some might call that a second Balfour miracle. And ... we as a community offer you our heartfelt thanks.”

As well as celebrating what is seen as a crucial step towards Israel’s creation, there have been repeated reminders that the Declaration also calls for the rights of non-Jewish communities not to be prejudiced.

“We conclude the centenary inspired by two things: inspired

by the pioneering spirit of those who crafted those 67 words into history and thereby restored an ancient people to its ancestral land,” said Kestenbaum.

“And we are equally inspired by the task of building a society that those legendary pioneers – Lord Balfour, Lord Rothschild and Chaim Weitzmann – a society they would be proud of.”

S&P Senior Rabbi Joseph Dweck said: “We must... recognise that coming home must never be taken for granted.

We must find peace.” But describing Israel as “a gift to the world”, he insisted: “She is to be applauded not condemned, embraced not boycotted, celebrated not shunned.”

Rothschild recited the historic document and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis delivered a prayer he composed.

Regev: ‘Centenary strengthened ties The centenary of the Balfour Declaration helped to deepen ties between Israel and the UK, Mark Regev has said, writes Justin Cohen.

Israel’s ambassador this week reflected on a programme that included more than 160 events across the country and a dinner at Lancaster House attended by Theresa May and Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The fact Mrs May invited my prime minister for the day of the centenary as a guest of government says a lot,” he said.

“The centenary gave us an opportunity to look at the relationship that goes back 100 years. For Israelis to remember the part Britain played and for the British to remember the part they played.

“I think there is an understanding in this country – and

we don’t have to agree on all the politics all of the time – that Israel is a multi-party democracy with freedom of speech and religion.

“There’s only one land mass in the Middle East that really espouses values British people hold dear, and during the centenary we managed to talk about those issues, which bring us together.

“It was also an opportunity to talk about defence and security cooperation [and] trade.

On the Andrew Marr programme, he spoke about how security cooperation is saving British lives. People aren’t aware of that.”

Regev described the manner in which the Embassy worked with the community on the centenary as one of his greatest sources of pride since arriving in London, along with the visit of Netanyahu, which included talks with May and Boris Johnson focused on Iran and the peace process.

It also covered the burgeoning economic relationship with a visit to the London Stock Exchange where he told business figures that investing in “anything in Israel, even a parking space in Tel Aviv” would yield results.

Demo dispenses with terror flag Metropolitan Police officers are believed to have warned organisers of an anti-Balfour march that anyone flying Hezbollah flags would be liable to be arrested.

The group behind an antiIsrael march in Grosvenor Square last week told supporters not to fly the flag of the Lebanon-based militia, which has thousands of rockets aimed at Israel, after advice from the police.

Jewish community campaigners have long asked

that the Home Office and Metropolitan Police ban the Hezbollah flag, which has

until now been flown legally because Hezbollah’s political wing is not a proscribed group, unlike its armed wing.

The group’s External Security Organisation was proscribed in 2001, and in 2008 this was extended to Hezbollah’s military apparatus, including its Jihad Council.

But the flags for the organisation’s military and political wings are the same. Police have said that in order for the flag flying to be an offence, the context and manner in which it is displayed must demonstrate it is in support of proscribed elements of the group.

Some Jewish community members launched a petition against the new centre but others have said they

They added: “We are sure the new Islamic community will contribute, with us, to the neighbourhood’s character, harmony and safety.”

WEINSTEIN ‘HIRED EX-MOSSAD SPIES’ Harvey Weinstein is reported to have hired private security agencies to collect information on women and journalists trying to expose allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him, including an Israeli firm made up of ex-Mossad agents.

Natalie Portman wins $1million Genesis Prize Natalie Portman has been announced as the 2018 Genesis Prize Laureate.

The acclaimed actress and director will receive the $1million award, which honours extraordinary individuals who serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews through their outstanding professional achievement, commitment to Jewish values and to the Jewish people.

The Oscar-winning actress (pictured), who began her acting career aged 12, was born in Israel and moved to the US as a child.

She is noted for her social activism in such areas as gender equality, combatting poverty, microfinance, and animal rights.

In 2015, the Harvard University graduate directed and starred in A Tale of Love and Darkness, a Hebrew-language film based on the novel by Israeli writer Amos Oz. Stan Polovets, co-founder and chairman of the Gen-

esis Prize Foundation, said: “Natalie’s charismatic onscreen presence has touched the hearts of millions. Her talent, her commitment to social causes and her deep connection to her Jewish and Israeli roots are greatly admired.

“She exemplifies the core traits of the Jewish character and values of the Jewish people – persistence and hard work, pursuit of excellence, intellectual curiosity, and a heartfelt desire to contribute to making the world a better place.

In keeping with tradition, the $1m award money will be granted to philanthropic programmes focusing on advancing women’s equality, including projects in Israel.

Portman said: “I am deeply touched by this honour. I am proud of my Israeli roots and Jewish

heritage; they are crucial parts of who I am.”

She will be honoured at a ceremony in Jerusalem next June.

Chief unveils festival of learning for women Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has announced an educational initiative for women that he hopes will set a new tone within the British Jewish community, writes Jenni Frazer.

The Neshama Festival, described as “groundbreaking” by the organisers, will take place in January and will be a unique women’s learning event, aimed at attracting women from all levels of religious observance.

Michelle Bauernfreund from the Chief Rabbi’s Office said the festival, scheduled to take place after Shabbat on 27 January, would offer learning for women in the UK in a uniquely creative way.

She said: “The sessions will span a wide variety of topics, through the media of film, music, art and dance, in addition to traditional learning options.”

All rabbis, rebbetzen and educators have been notified and asked to encourage their community’s women to attend the festival.

The Chief Rabbi wants Neshama to inspire a much greater enthusiasm for learning among women.

He said: “Our objective is for Neshama to create a paradigm shift in the provision of Jewish educational experiences for women in our communities.

“My hope is that it will act as a catalyst for similarly innovative and creative events to be held at a local level, right around the country.”

75 years young, and counting Stephen Oryszczuk on how the Council of Christians and Jews is marking a key anniversary with a powerful initiative When many of us reach the age of 75, we don’t want a fuss made at birthdays.

It may not yet be all Ovaltine and biscuits, but there’s more hunkering down than limbering up.

Not so the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ), which is celebrating having been an open tent for three quarters of a century.

Why no Ovaltine? Because it has a youngster keeping it up all night.

The youngster is the CCJ’s Yad Vashem Seminar for Church Leaders, run with the International School of Holocaust Studies. It has just turned 10. It sends 20 clergy members to Israel every year, and now has 200 alumni.

Participants learn about pre-war Jewish life, anti-Semitism and persecution of Jews, including Christian anti-Judaism, the destruction of European Jewry and religious responses to the Holocaust, such as how Jewish and Christian theology has been affected by the Shoah, and the change in Christian-Jewish relations.

They hear survivors and top speakers including Professor Yehuda Bauer, Rabbi David Rosen, Dr David Silberklang and Dr Rafi Vago, and then return to educate others. What

has been the impact?

“To be there for 10 days, to have that immersion, it’s life-changing,” says Revd Colin Smith, superintendent minister of the Cambridge Methodist Circuit. He recently went to Yad Vashem with the CCJ having been 25 years earlier “when it was much smaller”.

Smith, who is well aware German Methodists were among Hitler’s most fervent supporters, says the experience stays. “The impact on you is so great. You learn about it in ways I’d never thought.”

How did it make him feel? “Angry. It made me want to do something. It challenged me about anti-Semitism in the world, and the way it keeps returning in different forms.”

Smith considers he had a good background in the Holocaust before he went (although he’d never met a survivor) and had already spent time with Jewish community members in north London.

Is it the likes of Smith who should attend, or should the CCJ seek to get people like antiIsrael cleric Revd Stephen Sizer on the course?

Is the programme merely preaching to the converted?

“I think with the Holocaust, we need to be

Works of art hidden for decades go on show at German museum Some 250 art works that a reclusive collector hid from the world for decades, including pieces likely looted from Jewish owners under Nazi rule, have finally gone on show at a German museum.

The paintings, which have gone on display at Bonn’s Bundeskunsthalle as part of a double exhibition titled Gurlitt: Status Report, are from the huge art collection hoarded by late collector Cornelius Gurlitt. It includes works by Albrecht Dürer, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro.

Authorities first stumbled on the art, stored in Gurlitt’s Munich home, while investigating a tax case in 2012.

The exhibition focuses on works of art believed to have been taken from their mostly Jewish owners as part of Nazi persecution and on works whose provenance has not yet been established.

Members of a Jewish family near Paris gave their dog extra treats this week after he saved them from a fire in a suspected arson attack. The dog’s barking alerted the family to the fire, which police say was started deliberately on Friday night.

It is not known whether the motive was hate crime.

It is the first chance for the public to view any of the paintings and other works from the 1,500-piece collection that belonged to the estate of Gurlitt’s father, the Nazi-era art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt.

Nazi Art Theft And Its Consequences, aims to put the works into their historical context.

It tries to shed light on Hildebrand Gurlitt’s life and also focuses on the fate of Jewish artists, collectors and art dealers who fell victim to the Nazi regime.

The works cover a broad time span, from Lucas Cranach via Carl Spitzweg and Edgar Degas to Max Beckmann.

Among the highlights are Monet’s Waterloo Bridge

and the marble sculpture Crouching Woman by Auguste Rodin.

Gurlitt, who died in 2014, had hidden more than 1,200 works in his Munich apartment and a further 250 or so at a property in Salzburg, Austria.

His will bequeathed the works to the museum in Bern.

The senior class from the Forest Hills School District visited the museum in Washington DC last Wednesday, some of whom made inappropriate remarks on social media. How iPhone got X factor An Israeli team was a prime mover in Apple’s new facial recognition phone technology Israeli technology is at the forefront of the facial recognition feature that has captured the headlines for Apple’s newlylaunched flagship device the iPhone X, writes Shoshanna Solomon.

Called Face ID, the innovation is the main way users unlock the new iPhone, which dispenses with Apple’s familiar home button.

The iPhone X went on sale last week, priced from £999.

An Apple spokesman in Israel declined to comment on an Israeli television report which cited unnamed Apple sources, or on the use of Israeli technology in Apple’s products.

But earlier this year, the Calcalist financial website said the US giant had acquired, for several million dollars, Israel’s Realface, a cyber-technology

startup whose facial recognition model can be used to authenticate users.

Set up in 2014 by Adi Eckhouse Barzilai and Aviv Mader, Realface has developed a software that offers users a smart biometric login, aiming to make passwords redundant when accessing mobile devices or PCs. According to Startup Nation Central, a database for Israeli tech companies, the Tel Avivbased firm had raised $1million prior to the acquisition and employed up to 10 people.

The company had sales in China, Israel, Europe and the US, according to the data firm.

The iPhone X also features the new A11 Bionic chip, which Apple has described as “the most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone”.

‘REFORM OR WE WILL WALK’, HALEY WARNS COUNCIL The United States is ready to pull out of the UN Human Rights Council unless it institutes reforms, its UN Ambassador Nikki Haley warned this week. “It will either adopt reforms or the United States will leave,” she said to applause at the annual Washington conference of the Israeli American Council.

Apple started its activities in Israel after it bought Anobit Technologies Ltd in 2012.

Its Herzliya office has approximately 800 employees, and Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that it is the company’s second-largest research and development office in the world. There is another Apple centre located in Haifa.

The head of Israel’s national airline resigned on Tuesday, after leading the company for four years. Chief Executive officer David Maimon, who has served El Al for 12 years in various roles, did not say when he would step down. During his tenure as CEO he oversaw the airline’s acquisition of new aircraft – notably the procurement of 16 Boeing 787 Dreamliners – expanded routes, cut costs and developed its groundservices operations.

Fitting celebration for special occasion From a dinner with two prime ministers at Lancaster House, to a high-level conference at the Houses of Parliament, to a moving candlelight service at the country’s oldest synagogue, no one could claim that the centenary of the Balfour Declaration wasn’t given the attention and focus befitting the occasion.

More than 160 events nationwide showed the community’s determination to mark Britain’s role in a crucial stepping stone to the creation of the Middle East’s only democracy.

But that did not mean that the sensitivities around the declaration or the continuing lack of peace between Israel and the Palestinian was ignored.

“Let us choose this centenary to rededicate ourselves anew to the grand vision of that document,” said Balfour 100 chair Lord Kestenbaum in closing the service at Bevis Marks Synagogue. “Our work is not done. In many ways it has only just begun.”

From start to finish, the anniversary struck the right tone; the definition of what Lord Rothschild would have hoped for when he set up the community’s Balfour 100 group calling for the anniversary to be marked with “pride and dignity”.

Mazeltov to all those who worked around the clock to make the Balfour 100 what it was, and to the Christian friends of Israel whose vision led to the stunning celebration at the Royal Albert Hall this week.

JAW-JAW AT YOUR CONFERENCE It was an absolute delight to be at BICOM and Jewish News’ annual Israel policy conference last week, marking the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.

There were some great speakers from all wings of the political spectrum, including Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry, Government Minister Priti Patel, former Israeli Labour leader Isaac Herzog and Conservative political veteran Sir Malcolm Rifkind.

As someone who believes in jaw-jaw not war-war, it was positive to see so much

respect showed to the event’s Palestinian speaker, Elias Zananiri, and a willingness to understand the Palestinian point of view, even if many of those who read this newspaper do not agree with their perspectives.

Your policy conference was a fitting way to mark the moment and celebrate the centenary of the 1917 declaration by highlighting how it helped pave the way for Israel.

Of course, until Israel lives in peace with its Palestinian neighbours, the goals of the declaration won’t be fully met.

I would like to point out that Professor Henry (Tabby) Tabor who is known as the “father of solar energy”, insurance expert and cofounder of Metuna Ivan Pope and the late Professor Gerry Ben David, physicist and brilliant expert on road safety, were omitted.

Chaim Herzog, with whom I founded the Committee of Concerned Citizens, to change the electoral system in 1978 when he returned from the UN, was a devotee of the British electoral system.

I do hope there will be an official celebration event as this will mean so much to the British-Israeli community.

Balfour not just for Jews What a breath of fresh air! That was my reaction to the article by Anna Roiser on the different treatment of Arabs and Jews in Israel, particularly the West Bank and Carmel (Jewish News, 11 October).

I have travelled to Israel many times and was once proud to be associated with that country.

On my last visit to the Knesset, I asked a lawyer why I was advised against using an Arab-driven taxi to the airport as I would be stopped and searched before arrival, but not with an Israeli-driven one.

His answer made me laugh.

He asked if I would get into a taxi

in the UK driven by a Pakistani. I said it was unlikely to find one not driven by one.

I have lost good friends because they see me as an antiSemitic Jew. I have become, sadly, a vocal critic of what I see as Israeli government intransigence over the true meaning of democracy, as it continues to land grab and speak of peace without any apparent intention of allowing a Palestinian state.

The Balfour Declaration was not a promise of just an exclusive state for Jews.

As the Green Party did at its annual conference, the Jewish community must update its policies to reflect the reality, in line with Jewish teachings and tradition.

Balfour provides a chance to launch a new narrative ALEX BRUMMER

C

overage of Israel in much of the British media inevitably focuses on the strategic conflict in the region, settlements and treatment of the Palestinians. The commemoration of the centenary of the Balfour Declaration allowed for a more rounded approach.

It is to the credit of Theresa May’s government that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was honoured with a dinner at Lancaster House and to the shame of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn that he was not there.

Corbyn declined to attend the dinner and then poured salt on the wound by speaking at an event hosted by Muslim Engagement and Development (Mend), whose director of engagement is former civil servant Azad Ali, an Islamist extremist who supports Hamas.

It was of little consolation that at the Jewish News/BICOM conference on Balfour held at Westminster, Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry declared Corbyn was a Zionist, if that meant believing in a two-state solution.

Some people in the community might have preferred Balfour to have passed by unheralded, fearful that the commemoration would draw attention to the second half of the declaration with its emphasis on protecting the rights of the indigenous Arab population.

To his credit, the Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev, in a ceremony at the New West End Synagogue, took this on directly, pointing to the civil rights granted to Israel’s minority Palestinians and contrasting it with the lack of democracy among the Arab states.

Plainly, Israel’s provision for Arab-Israelis within the Green Line is far from perfect and they lack many of the same educational, security and housing privileges of their Israeli-Jewish neighbours. But in Israel’s last budget, a record $4bn of funding was offered to Arab mayors and officials to help upgrade social cohesion for Israeli-Arabs.

The biggest benefit of the commemorations was the opportunity provided to look at history.

Without Balfour, the doors to Jewish immigration to escape Russian pogroms and European anti-Semitism between the world wars would not have been open. And the Shoah, devastating

Balfour provided an opportunity for modern Israel to be seen and better understood. BBC documentary The Balfour Declaration: Britain’s Promise to the Holy Land gave a strong flavour of the new Israel of high-tech and brilliant architecture. It was balanced with menacing pictures of the security wall and some Palestinian family histories that are disturbing. But it was hard to escape the fact that the reality of Israel is a modern, vibrant, combative democracy.

Politics and Middle East diplomacy was a long way from everyone’s minds when Netanyahu was invited to address the London Stock

Exchange (LSE) the day after May’s dinner.

Guests included FTSE companies, such asBarclays Bank, which is doing extensive financial technology R&D in Israel, as well as UK grown tech outfits, such as retailer Ocado.

He was regaled with data from the LSE’s chief executive on the importance of Israeli tech companies to the functioning of the exchange.

On the main market, Israeli companies are valued at £15+bn and there is a huge present on the AIM market for smaller, growing enterprises.

The LSE uses its private equity/investment platform to drum up money for Israeli start-ups.

Netanyahu may be under pressure in Israel over alleged corruption offences, but the LSE saw a prime minister very much in command of his brief. He noted that Israel, with no native car industry, was now a leader in the tech for autonomous cars, having created Waze and Mobileye – with no government intervention – on the way.

He also extolled Israel’s pioneering work in software for the healthcare industry, which may soon come to the NHS. It was a confident performance that left an influential audience impressed. A century after Balfour, Israel’s lead in technology provides a stirring new narrative.

Bizarre judgment goes against law of the land EVE SACKS

ast month’s Court of Appeal decision in the Al-Hijrah case found for Ofsted that segregated education is discriminatory for both boys and girls owing to their lack of opportunity to develop confident relationships with the opposite gender. The judgment seems bizarre given that the right to have singlegender schools is enshrined in UK law.

Rabbi David Meyer of Partnerships For Jewish Schools (PaJeS) made an important observation in a piece he wrote in this newspaper last month, stating: “The Department for Education (DfE) has every right to expect schools to offer the same opportunities to boys and girls.”

But this is not happening consistently in Jewish schools. Several of them offer different curricula in Jewish studies depending on the gender of their students.

Further, within some Orthodox communities, the single-gender schools systematically discriminate; they are denying boys a secular

education while denying girls a high-level Jewish education. Children have different opportunities and educational outcomes depending on their gender.

Ofsted contended that while the curriculum in Al-Hijrah School was identical for boys and girls, the segregation practically affected the girls more as “in general in today’s society, women have been and remain the group with minority power in society”.

Ofsted added in its statement: “In terms of the distribution of wealth and influence, an educational system which preserves segregation between the sexes… women are disproportionately excluded from networks of power and influence.”

Perhaps due to the identical curriculum for all at Al-Hijrah School, this argument was rejected by the two male judges, although it was accepted by the female judge. However, it is apparent that this is the situation in parts of the Jewish community.

Last week, one of my friends asked her son what he was learning at school. He replied that his Gemara test was on “how you buy a woman”. My friend was appalled; how could

his school’s curriculum, which reinforces the power that men have over women, be compatible with equality law and the British values that all UK schools must uphold?

However, my friend is acutely aware that her son’s older sister is getting an excellent secular education in a Charedi voluntary-aided girl’s school and that there is no way for her son to access a comparable secular education without her family leaving their community.

Even within the same schools, girls and boys are having different opportunities and education. Boys, even at primary schools, are encouraged to read from a Torah scroll.

Gender stereotyping starts young; the Simchat Torah flags often coloured in primary school have pictures of boys only.

In some primary schools, pupils are split for Jewish education, with the boys learning

Gemara. Sometimes the girls are taught Jewish history, but one of my friends told me her daughter was taken shopping instead. Another told me her daughter’s class did flower arranging.

While the secular curriculum within any given secondary school is likely to be same for all, there can be completely different Jewish education curricula for girls and boys.

Splitting segregated schools into two legal entities and continuing as before is not the right answer. Even if schools have to re-register to maintain the segregation, surely our community values should dictate that Jewish schools invest equally in our girls to ensure their Jewish education is the same as that which is offered to boys, and that boys are offered secular education comparable to the girls in their community.

Perhaps PaJeS can work with the DfE to ensure this is achieved across our community.

amned if they do, damned if they don’t. Jewish allegations of antiSemitism are being fabricated so they can be dismissed.

In recent times, the public has been exposed to many new trends. Fake news is deliberate misinformation seeded to damage or make gains. There is the political dead cat strategy, whereby politicians theoretically throw something on the table so shocking everyone points and discusses the table rather than the policy agenda at hand. Gas-lighting is where people are psychologically manipulated so much they begin to doubt their sanity.

Reading columnist Michael Segalov’s thoughts on Jeremy Corbyn’s decision not to attend a Balfour Declaration centenary celebration dinner, readers might have better understood these phenomena. The declaration was a statement of support issued by the government in favour of the establishment of

a national home for the Jewish people. The headline for Segalov’s piece was ‘It’s not ‘antiSemitic’ for Jeremy Corbyn not to celebrate the centenary of the Balfour Declaration’.

Quite right. But who said it was? Perhaps Segalov didn’t scribe the title but his piece gives some detail: “…accusations of anti-Semitism against the Labour leader if not explicit, are already at least being inferred”. So, who is making these inferences and how?

The leading expert body on anti-Semitism, the Community Security Trust? Nope, not a word. The All-Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism? No statement. The Board of Deputies of British Jews?

A quick search shows very little.

Segalov did find a response, quoting Jewish Leadership Council chairman Jonathan Goldstein: “It will not have been amiss for Mr Corbyn to understand the Jewish community will have taken great heart and great comfort for seeing him attend such an event because it recognises the right of Israel to exist” .

So where is the inference of anti-Semitism?

as to infer anti-Semitic intent on Corbyn’s behalf? In the extreme, if one read Goldstein’s comment as suggesting Corbyn’s failure to attend implies he does not believe in the right of Israel to exist, that might be problematic and fall foul of Labour policy. But that is not what Goldstein said and Corbyn settled it anyway, saying in September 2016: “Israel has the right to exist.” So no luck there.

As academics like David Hirsh have said, Jews highlighting anti-Semitism are too

often subject to ‘the Livingstone Formulation’, where those accused of anti-Semitism reject the charge, and the claimants [contrary to the Macpherson principle, which requires perceived victims to be treated with due care and sensitivity] are accused of deceiving people for political purposes in the service of the Israeli state. The perpetrator becomes the victim. Understanding modern anti-Semitism requires individuals not to fall into this trap.

What is becoming more common is an escalation to the next logical conclusion: to say Jews are making these apparently baseless accusations when they have not even done so.

This is dangerous territory. A charge of anti-Semitism is serious. Responsible Jewish communal bodies know this and make allegations carefully. This new phenomenon, which we could call the Livingstone Formulation 2.0, has the effect of undermining the rights of victims of anti-Semitism to call out their abusers. In this era of fake news, dead cats, gas-lighting and the Livingstone Formulation, more than ever I recommend readers to choose carefully what they read and how.

Israel: a success story in a failing neighbourhood JEREMY HAVARDI

L

ast week there was an outpouring of celebration for the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. Britain’s decision to ‘view with favour’ the recreation of the Jewish homeland should be remembered as a seminal moment when one of the world’s great powers gave recognition and legitimacy to political Zionism.

While Balfour did not create modern Israel (Jewish endeavour and skill achieved that), he ensured that Britain in 1917 stood on the right side of history and civilisation.

But another theme also echoed last week, namely that Balfour’s work was only half done.

Boris Johnson, while lauding Britain’s role in helping to create Israel, wrote: “The vital caveat in the Balfour Declaration, intended to safeguard other communities, has not been fully realised.”

His words were echoed by Jonathan Allen, the UK’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN when he told the Security Council there was “unfinished business” with the Declaration.

In an otherwise sensitive and balanced speech, Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry said the clause on protecting the rights of non-Jews in Palestine was a “work in progress”.

But the failure to create a two-state solution isn’t a contradiction of the Declaration.

For the document did not speak of protecting the ‘national’ rights of the ‘existing non-Jewish communities’ in Palestine, only their ‘civil and religious rights.’ Those rights have been upheld in Israel’s basic laws and its Supreme Court.

Non-Jewish communities in Israel can vote and participate in elections, exercise their religious freedoms, move and travel without impediment, join trade unions and find legal redress.

The de facto discrimination and inequality affecting the Arab population, a common problem for minorities in many countries, is something Israel must continue to address.

The lack of a West Bank Palestinian state must be seen in the context of the inflexible, unceasing and visceral rejection of Jewish sovereignty, and the failure to accept the many offers of statehood made since 1937.

When the Arab world twice rejected partition

before 1948, when Yasser Arafat turned down a Palestinian state in 2000-1 and when Mahmoud Abbas rejected Ehud Olmert’s offers in 2008, this was not a ‘failure of Balfour’. It was a failure of Palestinian maximalist thinking. When this rejection ends, the opportunities for peace and Palestinian statehood will surely emerge.

The existence of a Jewish state has failed to dull the long-standing anti-Semitic prejudice throughout the Arab world. In response, we should deplore those societies in which such toxic prejudice holds sway. If there is reason for lamentation it lies elsewhere and, in his visit to London, Benjamin Netanyahu alluded to it.

He said it was tragic that the British mandate, which gave life to the Balfour Declaration, was not implemented earlier. Had a sovereign Jewish state existed in 1939, it would have been the only

country in the world to prioritise the rescue of beleaguered Jews from Europe.

We should lament the behaviour of the British authorities in Palestine after 1917. They appeased the forces of rejection, responding to Arab unrest and anti-Jewish violence with measures to crack down on immigration. This culminated in the 1939 White Paper, which sought to snuff out a Jewish state altogether.

A century on from 1917, modern Israel is a pulsating, creative, technologically-advanced democracy which, despite its flaws, is a glowing testament to Jewish ingenuity and energy.

It is a success story in a thousand ways, a light unto the nations. One can only hope that, a century from now, it will live in a more enlightened neighbourhood. If not, that’ll be no reason to lament the 200th anniversary of Balfour.

A seven-year-old and his 97-year-old great grandma have been labelled the ‘dynamic duo’ after they raised £800 for Gesher school through a cake sale. Helga Lemer said: “The idea came from Dylan and it was very special and lovely to do something together with him.” All proceeds will go towards specialist equipment at Gesher, with Dylan Milichm an Etz Chaim pupil, saying: “I enjoyed it a lot, it was fun and I can’t believe how much money we have raised. It’s so cool.”

More than 300 people were involved in numerous events at Bushey Synagogue, held as part of its Balfour 100 celebrations. Rebbetzin Ilana Epstein was the scholar-inresidence over Shabbat, and led an inspiring session for the community, while the main event was a Melava Malka after Shabbat with guest speaker Elkan Levy. Rabbi Elchonon Feldman said: “Bushey made a special effort to celebrate 100 years since the Balfour Declaration. Everyone present felt honoured to be part of such an important commemoration and celebration.”

Catford and Bromley United Synagogue celebrated its 80th anniversary as well as the centenary of the Balfour Declaration at a Melava Malka. Guests, who included local MPs and members of Lewisham Council, were entertained by The London Cantorial Singers, while Professor Michael Berkowitz of UCL (pictured), gave a lecture on the Balfour Declaration. Chairman Joe Burchell said: “We started in 1937 with 50 members and 20 children, and now 80 years later have a membership of 230 families with a cheder of more than 30 children.”

Television and radio host Jeremy Vine helped British Emunah raise £350,000 to fund its work with vulnerable Israeli children, addressing 350 people at Monday’s Guildhall dinner. Counsellor Menachem Machtayev, who grew up at Emunah Afula, made the appeal. Teens Elisha and Yakir from Emunah’s Neve Landy home entertained guests – both dream of being professional singers. Immanuel College choir sang and guests included Chief Rabbi Mirvis and Ambassador Mark Regev.

“It was a fantastic evening,” said dinner chair Michelle Plainer. Chair Rosalyn Liss gave the vote of thanks.

‘My parents risked all for us’ T

he odds of Eddy Boas surviving the war years were stacked against him, almost from the moment he was sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, aged three, with his parents and brother.

On the brink of starvation, the child prisoner also endured being loaded onto trains bound for Theresienstadt and contracting typhus after liberation.

But he survived – and, even more incredibly, so did his family. Having contacted officials at the Red Cross, to the best of their knowledge, he is a member of the only family to have survived the camps intact.

Now Boas’ incredible story has come to light in his new book, I’m Not A Victim, I Am A Survivor, based primarily on the recollections of his older brother, Samuel, known as “Boy”, and his mother Sara.

The 77-year-old, who was just a baby when war broke out and the Nazis invaded his native Holland, has no memories to call his own during those early years and explains he has “blocked everything out”.

It was only in recent years that Boas, who now lives in Sydney, Australia, set about to discover more about how he and his family survived.

In 1943, the Boas family was rounded up and sent first to Westerbork transit camp, before being loaded

onto a cattle wagon and transported to Bergen-Belsen. His father, Philip, who served in the Dutch cavalry, was chosen to drive a horse and cart and pick up the dead bodies around the camp.

Boas, who retains a slight Dutch accent, explains: “The Jewish population were held at Star Camp, but he was allowed to go to the other camps. My brother used to follow him, so my father would drop carrots and potatoes meant for the horses. He would pick them up and run back to my mother.”

On 8 April 1945, as the British advanced towards northern Germany, the Star Camp prisoners were divided into three groups and loaded onto trains bound for Theresienstadt, Czechoslovakia.

“The first train was liberated by the Americans, the second was mainly Hungarian-Jews and did make it to Theresienstadt. We were put on the third train, alongside 2,400 Jews, who were mainly Dutch.”

Today known as the “lost train”, it was prevented from reaching its destination owing to Allied bombing and, instead, ambled aimlessly through East Germany, before being liberated two weeks later. Hundreds of passengers died from malnutrition and typhus.

For Boas, he and his brother survived thanks to the plucky actions of their mother, Sara, who jumped from the train en route with another woman, stole seven potatoes and eventually found her way back onto the train again.

After liberation, his family had to beg and steal food as they tried to make their way back to Holland. Boas, now five, was also showing signs of having contracted typhus. A British soldier named Captain Douglas took pity on the family and arranged for Boas to reach the army hospital in Leipzig, where they saved his life.

The family returned to Holland in June 1945 and a year later, Boas’ parents had another child, Estelle. They planned to start a new life in Australia, but, tragically, Philip died from stressinduced heart failure just a year later.

In 1954, Sara finally decided to make the 9,000 mile move with her three children. As they resolved to settle into life in Sydney, Boy, who is now 83 and still suffers nightmares from his experiences, struggled to adapt.

Boas recalls: “He kept getting into trouble. At a young age, he was taught the way to survive was to steal and that obviously made an impression on him.

He couldn’t quite handle Australia and so at 19 he returned to Holland.”

But it was not long before he found himself on the wrong side of the law, and this time he was put in prison.

In a horrific twist, Boy was placed in a cell next to Nazi SS captain Ferdinand Hugo aus der Fünten, who was responsible for the deportation of 80,000 Dutch Jews. And in the next cell was Gestapo officer Franz Fischer, who had been in charge of the deportation of 18,000 Jews from the Hague.

This exacerbated Boas’ feelings against the Dutch government regarding the treatment of its Jewish population after the war.

“To me it’s absolutely disgraceful,” says Boas. “The lack of empathy, not just for my family, but other Jews who returned. Holland is the only western country not to have apologised to its Jews. The government just makes excuses, because once you have apologised, you admit mistakes were made.”

While 64 of Boas’ extended family, including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents, perished in the Holocaust, his immediate family survived.

“Why did I survive? The strength of my mother and father, standing up to the Germans and willing to risk everything. They fought for their children and their family – and they won.”  I’m Not A Victim, I Am A Survivor by Eddy Boas is available now from eddyboas publishing.com.au

Francine Wolfisz speaks to photographer Mike Stone about his project documenting the stories of British-Jewish veterans

T

hey remained silent about the war for so many years, but looking into the faces of 12 veterans who feature in a new photography project, there’s surely many a great story behind these eyes.

Reminiscences: Veterans opens today at The Wiener Library, as a pop-up exhibition of ongoing work by photographer Mike Stone.

Having started his career working for NME, shooting celebrity portraits, in recent years Stone has focused on documentary work with Age UK, Shelter and advertising campaigns on body image for Dove. Two years ago, he also created a series of portraits and interviews with members of the Irish Traveller community.

While working with Age UK, he came into contact with a large number of veterans, who retained acute memories of their wartime experiences, despite their advanced years.

Stone, who is a member of Barnet United Synagogue, says he was fascinated not only by their stories but by their “trenchant views” on the world today.

“We’ve got a world where we are facing many similar challenges to the challenges these people fought for 70 years ago. I think we are not aware how dangerous the threats are to us, but we’ve got a bank of wisdom we can draw from.

“They have some very acute views on politics, on the world, on where we are making mistakes and it’s a very worthy input.”

Reaching out to the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women, Stone was put in touch with surviving veterans and has travelled the country to interview and photograph them.

He has so far completed 12 portraits and hopes to find funding to continue the project.

Commander Alan Tyler, 92, originally from Willesden, who began service life as a 13-yearold navy cadet and continued until the 1960s.

He escorted Winston Churchill and witnessed the sinking of the Tirpitz, the liberation of Singapore, the founding of the state of Israel and Britain’s first atomic tests.

The veteran also vividly remembers the sinking of the Scharnhorst on 26 December 1943, during the Battle of North Cape, Norway.

“That was a tremendous thing,” he recalls.

“There were only 30 odd survivors out of 2,000.

We fortunately put her radar out of action and therefore she didn’t know where everybody was coming from. Eventually she was sunk by destroyers going in with torpedoes.

“A lot of people were obviously killed in the fighting, but in those waters, if you were in the sea for half an hour ,you were lucky to survive.”

rose to rank of army captain, was posted to Egypt, Greece and Syria.

Speaking about how he views society today, he reflects: “My ideas of a world were a happy place, where people help one another. The world of today is certainly not that and people do not go out of their way to help one another – in fact often, the very opposite.”

But during his conversation with Joyce Ceserani, a leading aircraft woman in the WRAF, Stone found a positive message about the changes of today’s world.

“She said each generation should learn from the previous generation. The way she sees her grandchildren relating to her greatgrandchildren is so much better than the way her grandparents related to her, in terms of the openness and discussing things.”

While their views on life varied, Stone says he was humbled by all the veterans, who spoke modestly about their roles in helping the war effort. He adds: “They were young, but just got on with it and didn’t make a fuss. They didn’t want to make a song and dance about it, but some of them really did some extraordinary things.”  Reminiscences: Veterans runs at The Wiener Library, Russell Square, today, Thursday, 9 November, 7pm to 10pm. A very filling Sandwich Emperor Claudius, a gambling earl and one of WWII’s most daring exploits are all among the rich history of this part of Kent, as Francine Wolfisz and her family discovered The sun was barely rising over the horizon and all was seemingly quiet, but the seaweed-covered mudflats were alive with baby crabs scuttling for cover from the circling oystercatchers and sandpipers.

There are not too many times when it seems advantageous to get up at some unthinkable hour with the children, but today we were there to see the early bird literally catching the worm – or in this case, mussels, whelks, sprats and anything else from the abundance of wildlife bringing a special quality to Sandwich Bay. This sweeping inlet on the east coast of Kent, between Ramsgate and Deal, is a five-mile haven for bird watchers and nature lovers alike and part of the Sandwich & Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve. Luckily for us, it was also just a short stroll from our bedroom at The Lodge at Prince’s Sandwich Bay. Sporting buffs will likely be familiar with this venue, which also offers a 27-hole championship golf course and has in recent years played host to The Open. There are 38 bedrooms altogether on site, with 12 at The Lodge, which also offers two interconnected rooms, ideal for families and groups. Our room was modern, spacious and boasted a stunning view of the luxurious golf course and beyond.

Inside the main hotel, there is also a bar, sun terrace, fully-equipped gym, snooker and games room (much to my children’s delight) and The Brasserie on the Bay, with two AA Rosettes, which caters for vegetarians and has a dedicated children’s menu.

A short drive from the picturesque surroundings of Prince’s lies one of the most complete medieval towns in England, after which the bay was named. Sandwich was one of the original Cinque Ports (meaning “five ports”) formed for military and trade purposes. It was joined by Hastings, New Romney, Hythe and Dover.

Sandwich is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, though its roots are thought to go back 200 years before to Anglo-Saxon times.

town that the first captive elephant was landed in England by Emperor Claudius.

Not to be outdone, in 1255 another elephant arrived as a gift from the French to Henry III , and was taken on foot to the Tower of London to join the monarch’s menagerie.

The journey through Kent is said to have passed without incident except when a bull tried to attack the elephant but was swiftly thrown to the ground by its much larger rival.

There were no elephants or bulls on the day we explored Sandwich, just many quaint medieval buildings with bowing windows, sagging roofs and ancient beams. There’s even something charming about walking along No Name Street, an ironic title given that it’s possibly one of the best-known roads to look out for in the town today.

It would of course be remiss not to mention that this town indirectly gave a name to what one historian has described as Britain’s “biggest contribution to gastronomy” – the sandwich.

John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, was said to have been so addicted to his gambling that he did not have time to have a meal and instead asked his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread.

The very first “sandwich” was said to have been salt beef, no less, though one can probably assume it was not on rye!

A short 20-minute drive from Sandwich lies Dover, famous for its white, chalky cliffs, but also for its castle, from where the daring rescue from

Dunkirk was meticulously planned. While the history of that event has been well documented, not so well known is the role a small Kentish settlement played in the rescue of Jews during the Second World War. Richborough, around three miles from Sandwich, hosted thousands of refugees between February and September 1939, rescued by the Central British Fund for German Jewry and given safe haven at an old First World War training base, the Kitchener Camp.

It was an interesting side note as we made our way towards Dover Castle, which has formed an important part of Britain’s coastal defences for hundreds of years.

There’s plenty for all ages to enjoy here, though younger visitors may feel overwhelmed by some exhibits, including the Underground Hospital and Wartime Tunnels.

They can still, however, enjoy fantastic views from the top of Henry II’s Great Tower, and even get a taste of regal life by sitting on thrones inside the opulent King’s Hall.

There were also plenty of hands-on exhibits to enable visitors to learn about

codebreaking during the First World War, while my children were held enraptured by a historian dressed in wartime uniform. Look out also for the restored anti-aircraft gun that was used to see off marauding Zeppelins during the First World War, but remember to bring earplugs for the demonstration!

The Wartime Tunnels exhibit is a must-see on a visit to Dover Castle. First dug during Napoleonic times, it was from within these chalky walls 23 metres beneath the surface that Churchill’s Royal Navy planned Operation Dynamo. Taking place between 26 May and 4 June 1940, 338,226 troops, including 224,320 British, were rescued from the shores of northern France with a hastily-assembled fleet of 800 boats.

It was an evacuation on an epic scale, masterminded from these subterranean control rooms, which were first opened to the public just two years ago.

As our time came to an end, we returned once more to the coastal road, taking in the breathtaking white cliffs and appreciating all the natural beauty Kent has to offer.

Everything wanted to know about your favourite Torah characters, and the ones you’ve never heard of...

After the death of Sarah and her burial, Abraham began the search for a wife for his son Isaac. Abraham sent his trusted servant Eliezer to his former homeland. There, Eliezer encountered a girl drawing water at a well, who offered to give both him and his camels water to drink. This girl he discovered was Rebecca, the niece of Isaac.

Rebecca’s brother Laban enthusiastically invited Eliezer to his home. Rebecca’s family admitted that the match was divinely ordained, but nonetheless insisted upon asking Rebecca if she consented. From this event emerges the Jewish custom to ask the bride for consent and report it under the chuppah wedding canopy when reading out the ketuba.

After a week-long celebration, Eliezer insists on returning home to Abraham with the new bride for Isaac. Rebecca first sights Isaac from afar meditating in the fields and falls from her camel. They were married and settled down into a loving relationship, which also acted as a consolation for Isaac on the recent loss of his mother. From here some derive that marriage can come first and love afterwards. True love only matures with time, and it is with age and experience that love becomes stronger. Abraham remarried Keturah and had more children, all of whom he sent to live in other lands. Abraham gave, inter vivos, all his possessions to Isaac. Abraham died at the age of 175 and was buried alongside his wife Sarah by both Isaac and Ishmael in the Cave in Hebron.

Thus, the rift between the brothers healed and Ishmael is recalled alongside Yitzhak as righteous offspring of their parents.

DINAH

Dinah is the only one of Jacob’s daughters who is named in the Torah.

She is raped by Shechem (meaning shoulder), the son of the local ruler Chamor (donkey), who then tries to marry her.

Her brothers Shimon and Levi exact vengeance by persuading Chamor, Shechem and his menfolk to circumcise themselves in return for the daughters of Jacob and his family.

When the men are in the most pain on the third day, the brothers attacked the city, carrying off its womenfolk and children as booty. Jacob is horrified, and they earn his extreme displeasure. In response, they say: “Nobody makes a harlot of our sister.”

The primordial nature of the revenge is extreme. It is used later by Jacob in his “blessing” to explain why Levi is to be scattered among the other tribes of Israel.

Dinah’s name means “justice”, an irony considering how great a penalty is exacted and the use of cunning deceit to stage a city’s destruction.

Shechem’s name seems to suggest he is

a strong man, but this ends with his punishment. Chamor’s indicates he is foolish in allowing his son to behave in this way and for letting his city to be destroyed.

Dinah’s voice is remarkably silent.

The story states she went out to visit the daughters of Canaan. Was this about love, as Shechem alleges? Was it indeed rape, as all sex outside marriage might have been viewed that way?

Pirkei d’Rabbi Eliezer 27 suggests the baby born of Dinah’s liaison with Shechem turns out to be Asnat, Joseph’s wife. As a counter-narrative, Avot of Rabbi Nathan suggests Dinah spent too much time wandering off with her Canaanite friends and not enough time at home, placing blame on her for acting inappropriately.

Today, in a #metoo world, we need to view the story of Dinah as a telling narrative of a world where men hold power over women. ‘Can you favour one child over another?’

We should all be concerned by rising mental health issues

BY RABBI DANNY RICH My greatest achievement in life is rearing four children, each of whom has asked on one occasion or another: “Am I your favourite?”

I usually reply: “You are... at this moment!”

In an ideal world, every parent would love each of his or her children alike, but the earliest stories in the Book of Genesis demonstrate how difficult this is in practice.

It is clear that Sarah’s clear preference for Isaac over Ishmael leads to the expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael (Genesis 21:8-21), while the notorious difficult relationship of Esau and Jacob arises from the following verse (25:28): “Isaac favoured Esau… but Rebecca favoured Jacob.”

In the following generation, Jacob’s own indulgence of Joseph (Genesis 37:3) leads initially to Joseph’s arrogance and lack of selfawareness and results in the desire of his own brothers to kill him.

Perhaps the key to successful

parenting lies behind the comment of the 19th century German biblical commentator, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, who notes that in the Esau and Jacob story, we learn about the boys’ difference of personality after they have grown up (Genesis 25:27 and 28).

From this we learn, Hirsch teaches, that Esau and Jacob were given the same upbringing as children – a decision that was to lead to later misunderstanding – rather than being nurtured each according to his own personality, as Proverbs 22:6 demands: “Bring up each child according to its own way.”

Perhaps indicating that I have a different favourite among my own four children at any given moment is indeed a way of acknowledging the inevitable parental sin of favouritism, but at the same time, gives each of them the dignity of individuality.

BY MARK GREENFIELD A recent report, for which I was interviewed, found evidence of a “massive” increase in mental health issues for children and young adults in Barnet, particularly among the Jewish community. Support services struggle to keep up. I’m concerned by its findings.

Earlier this year, I was appointed as the young people’s mental health welfare officer for Reform Judaism.

I also experienced mental health challenges in my teens, so this was a way to make a positive impact.

Today it seems that, unless private support is sought, or unless it is an emergency, it is hard to guarantee access to mental health services for young people. The work of Reform Judaism’s mental health and wellbeing team supporting communities in addressing these issues has never been more important.

Bourne’s supreme in Scrabble victory MASTERS In the only game in Division One, Scrabble won the battle of the bottom two, beating HMH 3-2, to claim a first league win of the season. Alex Bourne (pictured), Dan Ruckin and Stefan Simons all got on the scoresheet.

Lions B recorded an emphatic 8-0 win over Brady B in Division Two, thanks to four goals from Michael Abraham, Simon Black’s double and one apiece from Darren Dryer and Immanuel Ezekiel.

Grandmother’s giant leap for Camp Simcha

Alan Segenfield was all smiles after his bowling team won the Datchworth Bowls Club cup.

Finding a new lease of life after being diagnosed with macular degeneration, which resulted in the deterioration of his eyesight, he joined Barnet Blind and Partially Sighted Bowls Club – for the visually handicapped, three years ago.

Delighted with his win, the 73-year-old said: “They encouraged me to try something new to help rebuild my confidence and it’s changed my life. I look forward to going every week and meeting so many lovely people.

“Playing bowls has allowed me to regain some of my independent and feel part of a team, winning the cup was the icing on the cake.’

CHARITY Dare devil grandmother Sarah Barnett celebrated her 70th birthday by taking part in a sponsored hang-glide.

Cheered on by her husband, daughter and son-in-law, sister-in-law and two of her three grandchildren, the fearless septuagenarian raised more than £750 for the charity by leaping off a cliff in Lewes, Sussex.

She said: “I’m a bit of a height junkie and this is something I had always wanted to do, that thrill of literally jumping off a cliff. I was

the oldest by far among the group. When the instructor asked about any medical problems, I didn’t know where to start. I told him about my hips and my back and then I think he got the picture!”

While saying she doesn’t plan any follow-up for subsequent birthdays, she was pleased she undertook this challenge, saying: “I want to thank everyone who supported me and donated to Camp Simcha. I hope this helps them in a small way to continue the wonderful work they’re doing.”

TV star completes 222-mile Indian cycling challenge

TV host Jeff Brazier felt “10 feet tall” after completing a Norwood Cycling Challenge in India.

Joining more than 20 other cyclists on the five-day 222 mile charity bike ride, the 38-year-old, who’s a long-term Norwood supporter, had previously cycled for the charity in Madagascar and Sri Lanka. Inspired to get back in the saddle “to regain confidence and to see if I still had that mental strength to

succeed”, he said: “It’s been a couple of years since my last Norwood Challenge and I really needed to have a break from the day-to-day routine of working and being a dad. I also really wanted to test myself and do something for Norwood, which is a charity that does such great work. These challenges are a great way to do that, I feel 10 foot tall!”

Starting in Cochin on the south-west coast of India, the cyclists took in the forests of Neriyamanagalam, holiday resort of Munnar and the Idukki and Kulamavu dams.

Reflecting on the challenges, he said: “They’re always tough, which they need to be so you get a sense that you’ve really earned all of the sponsorship money. This

one was particularly hard. On the Monday we must have cycled for about 10 hours and climbed almost 2,000 metres, but you soon forget about the physical pain when you’re riding with such inspirational people, like Lawrence from Ravenswood who was riding tandem with Norwood sports coach Jonathan Green for the whole week.

“One of the best things about Norwood challenges is riding with the people the charity supports. The amazing effort these people put into the cycling is truly inspirational. Added to that the fact that you’re raising money for a charity that does such amazing work and it’s just such a layered, incredible experience.”

‘Noisy pink ladies’ trek across Greece for Jewish Women’s Aid CHARITY

The 16 ‘noisy pink ladies’ raised £35,000 for Jewish Women’s Aid

A group of women trekked more than 100 miles across Greece to raise awareness of domestic abuse and fundraise for Jewish Women’s Aid. Labelled the ‘noisy pink ladies’ as they walked through the streets with pink JWA logo T-shirts, their trek saw them start off in Santorini, reach Naxos, before ending up in Mykonos.

Having so far raised £35,000, Jo Black, JWA trustee and member of the team, said: “My motivation obviously was to raise money and awareness for JWA whilst pushing ourselves physically. We felt we had the strength to

The second time the event’s taken place, they also took in Greece’s culture and landmarks, while also taking time out to try their hand at some traditional Greek dancing.

JWA’s chief executive Naomi Dickson said “The generosity of the Jewish community never ceases to amaze me – in giving up their time to raise funds for victims of domestic abuse.

“We are so very grateful to all 16 women, for putting themselves through training and challenge, to support Jewish women and children affected by domestic violence and abuse, they are inspiring and what they have achieved will go on to help many people.”

November is Jewish Legacy Awareness month Marie Sherrett’s legacy was instrumental in helping JNF UK renovate a centre for children with autism in Kiryat Gat, the first facility of its kind in the area.

JW3 is a registered charity. 60% of its funding is derived from earned income.

The remainder comes from the generous support of its donors and funders.

Thanks to Marie, kids who might otherwise have to travel hours to obtain the care they need, can now access a range of personalised treatments without having to leave their home town.

A gift to JW3 in your Will will help it to programme arts and culture, deliver inspiring education and strengthen the community.

Kisharon supports 27 adults across nine supported living facilities. Simon is one of these adults. Simon suffers from multiple learning difficulties and is supported by two support workers.

Through over 250-targeted projects, programmes and events, Maccabi GB reaches over 40,000 people nationally including 4,000 young people weekly.

Kisharon uses the money it receives from gifts in Wills to provide people like Simon with the opportunity to live independently and have a key to their own front door.

As well as its comprehensive sports programmes, it offers an extensive range of informal education projects and social events for all age groups.

Leaving a legacy to Maccabi GB will enable it to carry on its incredible work.

When Brian Davis passed away, his son, Robert, fulfilled his wishes to benefit one of Norwood’s Children & Family Centres.

Last month, Robert unveiled the improvements, with a plaque dedicating the new annexe to his parents Brian and Lynda.

Robert says. “I’m delighted that it will enable Norwood to offer its services to more children and young people with disabilities.”

The S&P Sephardi Synagogue is the oldest synagogue group in the UK.

S&P’s most notable legacy was given by Sir Moses Montefiore to maintain his own synagogue and the Judith Lady Montefiore College in Ramsgate; much later this was set up as an independent charity, the Montefiore Endowment.

The Endowment runs courses in London for training future rabbis and an international programme to train future ‘Dayanim for the Diaspora’.

The Endowment, which maintains close links to the Synagogue, has given generous support to numerous students in the UK and to many other educational charities.

November is Jewish Legacy Awareness month Malek has impaired vision and a lack of self-esteem. However, the UJIA-funded Youth Futures mentoring programme transformed her.
