Still poles apart
Corbyn gave us nothing, say community leaders after talks VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS If there was any need for further proof of the gulf that lies between Jeremy Corbyn and the mainstream Jewish community, it came within moments of the end of this week’s crunch talks. A statement released by the Board of Deputies (BOD) and Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) described the two-
hour meeting as “disappointing”, while seconds later, Corbyn interpreted that same gathering as “positive and constructive”. It’s clear the two sides (and how sad to refer to “sides” when we’re talking about the fight against racism) could not even agree on this. There has clearly been movement on the language used by the leadership on this issue. Gone now is any sort of terminology suggesting a localised and limited issue, and seemingly embedded is the acceptance of a real problem in Labour ranks that is yet to be ade-
quately addressed. That the leadership now appears to be comfortable making clear that claims of anti-Semitism are not a smear is also a sign of progress – in words at least. For this, our community leaders undoubtedly deserve praise for forcing change in language and levels of engagement of the leader himself. But in the absence of decisive action to back up those words, it’s little wonder the meeting has gone down like a lead balloon. A month after Jewish leaders put forward a raft of proposals for action, they are yet to receive a com-
mitment on a single one. The fact that, in the current climate, they did not even get a pledge that elected officials will be barred from sharing platforms with those suspended pending judgement, is troubling. So too that there is not yet any commitment to putting time limits on disciplinary cases – a move that would be seen to help turn Continued on page 16

News / Labour anti-Semitism
Corbyn meeting was ‘misse The row over anti-Semitism within Labour showed no signs of abating this week as community leaders described Tuesday’s meeting with Jeremy Corbyn as “a disappointing missed opportunity” – while praising his rhetoric on the issue. While the two mainstream Jewish organisations applauded Corbyn’s engagement during the landmark two-hour talks, they said he had failed to agree to any of the concrete actions they had previously asked for in their letter to him on 28 March. The Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) said: “They did not agree, in the meeting, with our proposals that there
should be a fixed timetable to deal with anti-Semitism cases; that no MP should share a platform with somebody expelled or suspended for antiSemitism; that they adopt the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism with all its examples and clauses; that there should be transparent oversight of their disciplinary process.” However, Labour insisted the request for a fixed time scale had not been rejected outright. Rather, Jennie Formby, Labour’s new general secretary, warned there might be legal limitations, but told the Board and JLC that the party was “consulting” on whether it was possible. According to Labour sources, the cases of Ken Livingstone and Jackie Walker were being “expedited” to conclude by the end of July. Corbyn faced the Jewish leaders together with his adviser Seamus Milne, Formby, and Shadow Communities Secretary Andrew Gwynne. Labour put a positive spin on the discussions and pointed to a front-page article in Tuesday’s Evening Standard, in which Corbyn had made a detailed apology for anti-Semitism in Labour. But Jonathan Arkush, president of the Board, and Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of the JLC, said: “Words in letters and newspaper articles will never be enough. Our sole objective from this meeting was to build trust with Mr Corbyn, but this will not be

possible until and unless he and the party turn their many strong words against anti-Semitism into equally strong actions, in order to bring about a deep cultural change in his supporters’ attitude to Jews.” Corbyn responded after the talks: “When members of Jewish communities express gen-
uine anxieties, we must recognise them as we would those of any other community. Their concerns are not ‘smears’. Jews belong in the Labour Party and we are utterly committed to making it a safe and welcoming place for them… Our party will not fail our Jewish brothers and sisters.” Speaking after the meeting, Jewish partici-
‘TOO MANY DO NOTHING’ Lord Sacks has warned that “too many good people” are failing to act against anti-Semitism and insisted the rising scourge goes against “the Britain I know and love”. The former Chief Rabbi delivered Radio 4’s Thought for the Day days after a House of Commons debate about bigotry towards the Jewish community, in which numerous Labour MPs spoke about abuse they received because of being Jewish or fighting Jew-hate. He said: “I’ve been doing Thought for the Day for 30 years but I never thought that
in 2018 I would still have to speak about anti-Semitism. I was part of that generation, born after the Holocaust, who believed the nations of the world when they said: Never again. “But this week...Several MPs spoke emotionally about the abuse they’d received because they were Jews, or more scarily, because they’d fought anti-Semitism. “According to the Community Security Trust, antiSemitic incidents in Britain have risen to their highest level
since record keeping began in 1984, at an average of four a day. This is not the Britain I know and love.” Concluding his address, he said that “all it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing. Today I see too many good people doing nothing and I am ashamed.”
Students play to remember Students from Yavneh College in Borehamwood took part in a football tournament last week involving teams of peoples who have experienced collective tragedy. The youngsters played against communities from war-torn countries such as Sudan, as well as people who had survived more recent genocides, such as Rwandans. There was also a team representing the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire. Organisers of the third Play2 Remember tournament at White City Tiger Turf ground in London included Football for Hope, Peace and Unity and Waging Peace, a non-governmental organisation, which say the event helps commemorate the dead and honour the living. “It’s a powerful way to bring people together
to honour the family and friends they lost,” said Waging Peace’s Sonja Miley. “But we are also reaffirming the resilience of survivors, and the triumph of hope.” Many of those caught up in the Grenfell fire were refugees themselves, added Maddy Crowther. “Survivors of genocide, state violence and disaster know what it is like to see their world destroyed. They understand what it is to lose loved ones, photographs of loved ones, treasured memories and a whole way of life.” Team Yavneh comprised 13 students with an interest in genocide prevention and awareness and were joined by another team with family of those affected by the Srebrenica massacre, as well as other teams of humanitarians.

d opportunity’ pants — who included the Board’s chief executive Gillian Merron, herself a former Labour MP; Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust; and Johnson — expressed their frustration that everything they put forward was met with “hiding behind process”. The community leaders said the Labour team were well aware of Jewish disappointment and had been advised of what the Board and the JLC were going to say in their statement. Nevertheless, a second meeting has been fixed for the end of July and they were hopeful some of the steps they asked for would have been taken by then. Arkush told Jewish News: “It has been proposed that there should be a process of evaluation to chart any progress, or lack of, concerning the requests we made.” In the meeting, Formby set out the steps she was taking, including hiring a team of lawyers to speed up the backlog of cases. It is believed the leader asked the Board and JLC for their input on what education programmes should look like – although there was no commitment to distribute the IHRA definition with all its accompanying examples, as had been urged. However, it is believed some examples accompanying IHRA will be included alongside other examples of problematic language, such as ‘Zio’. Goldstein said he had invited Corbyn to join him on a visit to Israel, either solo or under the
auspices of Labour Friends of Israel. “I spoke to him about the Save a Child’s Heart charity in Holon, which operates on children from Jenin, and Jonathan told him about his son who lives in Israel. We told him there were two sides to the story. But he did not respond to the invitation.” Arkush, who met Corbyn more than two years ago, said the Labour leader showed “much better body language” in this week’s meeting. “His language is changing. He accepted there is a problem and that when we say so, that is not a smear against him. It was a very cordial interchange.” But Gideon Falter, of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, said: “The Labour Party must now hold Mr Corbyn to account and that is why we have filed a disciplinary complaint against him. The Jewish community should not dignify the Labour Party with further meetings until [he] faces fair and transparent party discipline.” Corbyn acknowledged in the meeting that the Board and JLC were the main representative bodies, but insisted he would engage across the community, to include Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL). The party was forced to postpone a roundtable meeting on relations with the Jewish community, after the Board, JLC and other mainstream bodies pulled out. Concerns were raised over an apparent invite to JVL, which staged a counter-demo to the Enough is Enough event.
Labour’s IHRA ‘backtrack’ Jewish leaders this week accused Jeremy Corbyn of “backtracking” on Labour’s adoption of a new definition of anti-Semitism. Both the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and the Community Security Trust (CST) expressed concern about the apparent U-turn yesterday on the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition. The Party’s former general secretary Iain McNicol had previously suggested Labour
had adopted the “full” definition, apparently including a set of working examples. Labour sources indicated this week the party would not be adopting the full list of examples but developing a more extensive set of its own. However JLC and CST bosses said Corbyn and Formby could not cherry-pick bits they liked. JLC chief executive Simon Johnson said: “The full definition has been widely adopted by the CPS, the police, 132 local authorities and the Scot-
LABOUR POLITICIANS BACK JEWISH MP IN ANTI-SEMITISM HEARING Labour MPs including Luciana Berger and Jess Phillips accompanied Ruth Smeeth MP to a Labour disciplinary hearing yesterday, where she was due to give evidence. The Party heard the case against suspended Labour member Marc Wadsworth, who accused Smeeth of working with the right-wing media, which supporters labelled an anti-Semitic smear.

tish and Welsh governments, and we expect the Labour Party to adopt it in full as well.” CST communications director Mark Gardner said: “We made our feeling about IHRA very clear in the meeting. We said that its full adoption, with all of its clauses, was important in itself and also as a trustbuilding measure. “It is, therefore, very important that the situation now be clarified as quickly and transparently as possible.”
NO TO BOYCOTT Walker no-show Labour’s election campaign coordinator has sought to distance the party from suggestions it may support boycotts of Israel. Ahead of local elections on 6 May, Andrew Gwynne reacted to recent remarks made by frontbencher Kate Osamor, who suggested Labour might in future back the BDS (Boycott, Divestment
and Sanctions) movement of Israel connected to settlements. Gwynne said he believed boycotts were “incredibly unhelpful” and the party should focus on re-engaging international efforts to promote dialogue. Gwynne said: “The challenge for the party is to rebuild trust with the Jewish community.”
Suspended Labour member Jackie Walker will no longer share a platform with Chris Williamson MP next month. It has been confirmed by a Labour spokesman that the former Momentum vice chair, who has twice been suspended by the party and is awaiting a hearing, is not expected to make an
appearance at a May Day event. While Labour MPs have been told not to appear on platforms alongside those who have been expelled or suspended as a disciplinary measure, there was no such ban on appearing with people – such as Walker – suspended pending investigation.

Board forced to perform U-turn over ‘unfair’ election nominations form The Board of Deputies last night withdrew a nominations form for its elections next month after being advised by a leading QC it was “invalid and not fair”, writes Jenni Frazer. It came after Board chief executive Gillian Merron sent out the form to deputies earlier this week, telling them they could nominate more than one person for the presidency. Having trouble Coming days before today’s closure with your of nominations, it sparked anger from Varifocals? the three existing candidates who felt the goalposts had been moved at the last minute. Merron had “sought advice”, and said that “if deputies do want to nominate more than one person for president or treasurer or more than three for viceWe are Varifocal specialists and with more than 235 years of president, then the nomination(s) will be combined experience, our staff can help solve your problems. accepted”. whether deputies can or cannot nominate multiple candidates, and for which positions, and this needs review. “Nevertheless, we must be consistent in our processes, and so in line with the guidance issued when nominations opened, deputies may only nominate one candidate for president, three for vice president and one for treasurer, and not multiple candidates.” A row erupted as United Synagogue president, Simon Hochhauser made a last-minute decision to challenge the three candidates who have already secured 20 nominations — Marie van der Zyl, Sheila Gewolb, and Edwin Shuker. Hochhauser decided to apply after outgoing president Jonathan Arkush used Sunday’s plenary in Gibraltar to call for more deputies to stand. Each of the original candidates had been nominated by depu-
ties whose nomination form made it clear they could only nominate one person. But when Hochhauser said he would run, Merron sent out new forms – giving rise to the possibility his candidacy would depend on different electoral rules. The move angered Adrian Cohen, who is running van der Zyl’s campaign, and Andrew Gilbert, who is supporting Shuker. Cohen said that the changing of the rules on nominations would have “cast doubt on the legitimacy” of Hochhauser’s candidacy. Gewolb said the first change of heart over the nominations process could have been seen “as a sign, and the damaging public expression, of a serious lack of confidence in the abilities of any of the candidates already standing”. Merron denied rumours that there had been a “plan to delay the election for honorary officers”, which she said would take place Simon as planned on Hochhauser 13 May.

21st century faith leaders / News
Jewish News launches new interfaith awards for A nationwide search for those shaping interfaith understanding and cooperation in Britain is launched today by Jewish News, Church Times and British Muslim TV. Twenty-one 21st century leaders will identify and celebrate seven Christians, Muslims and Jews under the age of 35 who are leading projects, running organisations and creating dialogues to bring followers of the three Abrahamic faiths closer together. It’s believed to be the first time anywhere in the world that media outlets catering to different faiths communities have worked together in such a way. They will work in partnership with Coexist House, which seeks to boost public understanding of the perspectives and practises of the world’s religions. “The narrative of faiths in constant conflict is all too dominant today — often perpetuated by the media,” a spokesman for the project said. “Through this unique collaboration, we look forward to shining a light on those demonstrating in their work and their lives how their faith makes them more open, not less, to friendships and social action across cultural boundaries,” “With a combined audience of hundreds

of thousands across the three communities, we are uniquely placed to highlight the many glowing examples of positive interactions to our readers and viewers, and to spread awareness to wider society.” Nominations can now be submitted via the website 21421.co.uk until 29 June. A distin-

The Jewish News said: “For several years we have been looking to work with media outlets from other faiths on such a joint project and we are delighted that Church Times, British Muslim TV and Coexist have agreed to join us in this hugely worthwhile and rewarding initiative. “It’s a great honour to be working hand in hand with fellow journalists from other faith traditions to celebrate our common values and emphasise that there is so much more that unites us than divides.” You can nominate now at 21421.co.uk

School waiting lists drop Parents hoping to send their children to one of the big state-aided Jewish secondary schools breathed a sigh of relief after it was revealed that there has been a serious drop in waiting list places, writes Jenni Frazer. Rabbi David Meyer, executive director of Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS), told Jewish News: “Currently there is a 30 percent drop in the numbers on the waiting list in comparison to last year. “There are no doubt a number of factors feeding in to this, the most significant of which is the additional places offered across the schools. “The JPR [Institute for Jewish Policy Research] report that PaJeS commissioned to look at future provision has been completed, and shows that the number of applications for secondary places should remain at a similar level in future years.” PaJeS is heavily involved, along with the United Synagogue and JPR, in forward planningforJewishschools.JPRwillrelease a new study, commissioned by PaJeS, in a few weeks’ time, which builds on the data in its March 2017 survey. Much of the forecasting depends on the take-up in Jewish primary education. Rabbi Meyer said that currently “it is very early in the process and we don’t as yet have conclusive data regarding primary schools and places, as the first round of offers has only just gone out. However, the
A new report shows there has been a 30 percent reduction in waiting list numbers
initial indications are that there are enough school places across north-west London to meet the demand”. But he acknowledged that there “are pressures on certain schools, due to factors including location and religious ethos”. The new study, Rabbi Meyer said, would help with planning for the next five years. It could already be seen, however, that there was a definite increase in the numbers of religious children applying for primary school places, and a slight drop in the numbers of more secular applicants. Much depended on geographical location, with huge pressure on schools in Borehamwood.
In Hertfordshire alone, there has been a rise in applications for places at Yavneh Primary, from 170 in 2017 to 191 this year; for places at Hertsmere Jewish Day School, from 153 to 184 – both Yavneh and Hertsmere have 60 school places each; and 73 children’s names have been put down for the 30 places at Clore Shalom, a rise from last year’s 38 applications. To avoid a situation where children who have had Jewish primary school education cannot find a place at a Jewish secondary school, the secondary schools are implementing a “bulge” programme and are increasing the number of places on offer.
Mazeltov, Will & Kate! The Jewish community has congratulated the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge upon the birth of their third child on Monday. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Reform Judaism’s Senior Rabbi Laura JannerKlausner and Liberal Judaism’s director of strategy and partnerships Rabbi Charley Baginsky were among those to send their best wishes. Mirvis tweeted: “We wish their Royal Highnesses many years of joy from their

new son.” Janner-Klausner and Baginsky said: “The birth of a child reminds us of the miracle of life and the many opportunities for optimism.”
PROPERTIES ON SHOW An Israel property show is to be held at Finchley Synagogue on Sunday with companies hoping to help London’s Jewish community invest in Israeli homes. The Israeli Real Estate Show organised by Bayit B’Israel will feature estate agents and property companies offering holiday homes as well as accommodation designed for a more permanent move, with representatives from related services such as banks and law firms.
Bayit B’Israel chief executives Serge Haddad and Emanuel Vatari said: “The events allow buyers to meet face to face with representatives. They get the information they need and cultivate a relationship with various professionals.” Among areas being sold into are those “designed for the Orthodox community and foreign residents”, while others include luxury developments in north Tel Aviv.

News / Racist jailed / Anti-Semitic posters / Children’s Shoah memorial
‘Nazi’ sentenced to three years A self-confessed Nazi who called for the genocide of Jewish people has been jailed for three years. The 22-year-old man from Lancashire, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of two counts of stirring up racial hatred following a trial in January. Preston Crown Court heard how he described Jews as parasites to be “eradicated” at a gathering of far-right extremists, the Yorkshire Forum for Nationalists, held in February 2016. During the speech, he said: “You can call me a Nazi. You can call me a fascist. That’s what I am.” He ended by saying: “We need to start focusing on the real enemy. The real enemy is the Jew.” He also committed the offences
The 22-year-old was sentenced at Preston Crown Court
during a rally by a group named the North West Infidels on Blackpool Promenade the following month. When police arrested him at his home, they found material, including a poster that claimed “the Jewish master race” sought to turn
99 percent of the population into slaves, which the judge said was “as shocking and inflammatory as it is misguided”. During a sentencing hearing last week, he nodded when Judge Robert Altham questioned
whether he still held the same views. Sentencing, Judge Altham said: “The intent is very clear. He is trying to encourage a movement towards genocide. These are not idle comments said in the heat of the moment but intended to mobilise others.” Judge Altham described an apology submitted in mitigation as “meaningless” at best, “dishonest” at worst, saying: “He seeks to raise street armies, perpetrate violence against Jewish people and ultimately bring about genocide.” The man, who said Britain “took the wrong side” during the war, was given 18 months in prison for each offence, to be served consecutively.
Police probe posters at Bournemouth Uni Jewish students have described a spate of anti-Semitic posters at Bournemouth University as “appalling”, after police said they were investigating. Some posters suggested Jewish links to conspiracy theories about 9/11 and a plot to create a ‘Greater Israel,’ while others, found in a bathroom at the Talbot Campus, show Iranian
and Syrian leaders against the Star of David. Dorset Police said inquiries were ongoing, but that no arrests had been made. A university spokesman said: “We remind staff and students of BU’s commitment to report hate crimes. We take all incidences of abuse seri-
ously. Anyone breaching these rules will be subject to disciplinary proceedings.” Joseph Serfaty of Bournemouth University’s Jewish society said the posters were placed “to clearly intimidate and troll Jewish students by perpetuating old-school Nazi-style antiSemitic conspiracy theories”.
SHULS SUPPORT MEMORIAL DRIVE More than 100 volunteers from Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue have met to count 200,000 buttons collected for a project to create a memorial to the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust. The gargantuan task was triggered by a wave of support for the project from schools all over the country, the idea itself originating from a Lake District student who was asked to come up with a meaningful way to mark the mass murder.
The student who started the B’s Buttons initiative said she had been inspired by a visit from survivor Arek Hersh, one of 732 displaced children, known collectively as “The Boys”, who were resettled in the UK in 1945. He and 299 others were rehomed in the Lake District. The student came up with the idea of collecting 1.5 million buttons to reflect the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust, launching the project in September.

News / Local Elections 2018
The battle for Barnet Barnet Labour Hale ward candidates Ernest Ambe, Rachel Barker and Liron Velleman, supported by deselected former Tory councillor Sury Khatri, second left
Polling earlier this year for the Mile End Institute at Queen Mary University pointed to Barnet going red, part of an expected huge swing to Labour in the capital at next week’s local elections, writes Marc Shoffman. But as polling day approaches, the anti-Semitism scandal engulfing Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour continues to loom large amid speculation about its possible impact on one of the most marginal boroughs in the country, where 15 percent of the
electorate are Jewish. The last local elections in 2014 left the Tories with a tiny majority on Barnet Council before Conservative councillor Sury Khatri resigned in March to become an independent, while backing Labour. This left the Tories on 31 seats, Labour on 30, the Liberal Democrats and the Liberal Democrats on one. Among those hoping Labour will take power
for the first time since 2002, when they were in coalition with the Lib Dems, is Anne Clarke, who is attempting to gain a seat for Labour in the Childs Hill ward, where 17 percent of the local population is Jewish. She grew up in Chicago among Jewish families, so is familiar with the needs of the community and says she is sad to hear the concerns about anti-Semitism when visiting households. “Fundamentally, Jewish values are Labour values, and it hurts me that there are Jews who don’t feel comfortable voting Labour,” Clarke said. “I can only assure people that Barnet Labour has long-standing and deep connections with local Jewish communities.” Explaining why voters should back her in Childs Hill – which encompasses areas such as Brent Cross, Golders Hill Park and Finchley Road – Clarke said Childs Hill needs a “strong, local advocate” ahead of the Brent Cross/Cricklewood regeneration that is set to expand Brent Cross shopping centre, bring more homes and jobs to the area and create a new Thameslink station. She said: “Our current Tory councillors have made a mockery of our community, they threw caution to the wind by taking the Childs Hill Library out of the hands of professionals and replacing professional library staff with security
guards at Golders Green Library. “The major regeneration scheme is an incredible opportunity for Childs Hill to become an even better place to live. I don’t see any creativity or energy from our current councillors over this project. “They often shy away from public consultation meetings about the regeneration. The council seems to have handed the whole project over to developers, come what may.” The Conservatives in Barnet have two councillors representing Childs Hill, Shimon Ryde and Peter Zinkin, both of whom are standing again. Ryde says the Conservatives have maintained election pledges to keep libraries in the borough open, and insisted he has been on several panels that have heard views from residents on local regeneration.

Local Elections 2018 / News IDS The Industrial Dwellings Society (1885) Ltd
Have you experienced housing need? The Industrial Dwellings Society (IDS) is the oldest Jewish housing association in the UK already working with Jewish organisations to providing housing in the community. Lib Dem Childs Hill candidates, Jack Cohen, Susette Palmer and Sachin Patel
Ryde, a Beis Yaacov school governor, says he and fellow Tory councillors are committed to keeping weekly bin collections, investing in repairing and cleaning roads and pavements, as well as holding council tax and supporting housing in the Brent Cross development. He adds: “Now more than ever, having a strong Jewish voice locally and nationally, is vital so that issues important to the Jewish community can be heard by senior politicians. “Fear of terrorism has been a constant worry in the Jewish community but recently the rise of anti-Semitism and the fashionable rise in anti-Israel sentiment as a cover for antiSemitism is of real concern.” The ward’s third current councillor is Jack Cohen, who has represented the Childs Hill ward since 1986 and was Mayor of Barnet in 2000. Cohen – who is standing again for the Liberal Democrats alongside Sachin Patel and Susette Palmer – said the key concerns in the ward are the reduction in library opening hours, potholes, and general highways maintenance, as well as speeding traffic and the lack of enforcement of poor houses in multiple occupation and beds in sheds. Cohen said: “I hope all voters will take my years of campaigning and fighting for a better deal for residents in to account. “I am well known for working with local Jewish groups to set up new schools, often in the face of opposition by the council.” A few miles back towards the A41 and the infamous Apex Corner lies the Hale ward, with a Jewish population of 15 percent. It is where Elliot Simberg missed out on a seat in 2014, but this time is hoping to help the party maintain its majority in the area. Simberg is a school governor, sits on the police community action panel and is a trustee of the Jewish Youth Fund. Outlining the key issues for the ward, Simberg said: “Residents are concerned that Barnet’s weekly bin collections will go the way of neighbouring boroughs and be transformed into fortnightly pickups. “Together with my colleagues, I am fighting to ensure this does not become a reality. With cleanliness in mind, we are also aiming to see the return of the once popular quarterly skips scheme, a scheme that I’m sure will ease the stress at Pesach.” Safer streets and more visible policing are also a priority for Simberg. He says: “The rise of anti-Semitism across London as whole is something that must not be tolerated, and an increase in policing across the borough, together with my strong voice within the policing community, will help to suppress this worrying increase. “My experience with local schools in the position of governor has also shown me the positive role faith-based establishments have in our society and I understand that the pressure for
local school places is increasing.” The Tories took two Hale seats at the last election, with Labour taking the third. Former JFS boy Liron Velleman, currently UJS campaigns manager, is hoping to help Labour hold on. He is standing for Labour, alongside Ernest Ambe and Rachel Barker. Velleman says: “I am proud to be standing as a Jewish candidate for the Labour Party in Barnet. Barnet needs a Labour council for safer and cleaner streets, to build new homes and to invest in local services, and for these reasons, voters should consider Labour. “I also have a strong track record in supporting the development of the Jewish community and fighting anti-Semitism and have consistently done so as campaigns manager at UJS, and also as youth and students officer of the Jewish Labour Movement.” He insisted Barnet Labour has always stood alongside the Jewish community and says while the national picture has been “heartbreaking”, he predicts the track record of Barnet Labour on a local level should see a smaller impact from the ongoing rows than expected. East Barnet has a similarly high proportion of Jewish voters, at 15 percent. The ward selected three Labour councillors in 2014. One of the current Labour councillors hoping to hold his seat is Philip Cohen. He acknowledged there will be some perceptions that the party is soft on anti-Semitism, adding: “I have never experienced it, but I did speak at the annual conference last year in favour of the rule change for zero tolerance. “There is no question of where we stand as a party. We need to implement the Chakrabati report as soon as possible.” He said housing, health and the state of the roads are key issues for East Barnet, as is fighting crime, a battle he criticises the local Tory councillors for stifling by opposing extra funding for police officers. Thurai Pavanakumar, a Conservative Friends of Israel member, is among candidates looking to unseat Labour in East Barnet. He said he would focus on fixing potholes, affordable housing, protecting the green belt as well as getting Barnet a fairer share of police resources and looking at the cost of council outsourcing. The Liberal Democrats are also hoping to reduce Labour’s hold in East Barnet with former Mill Hill councillor Sean Hooker. He is used to disputes from his work at lettings agent complaints service the Property Redress Scheme and said he would also focus on council outsourcing, rising anti-social behaviour and the borough’s roads. Addressing concerns over rising anti-Semitism, Hooker said: “The trust and support of the Jewish community is damaged by ill-informed and unjustified comments by senior politicians from all sides.”
IDS is embarking on a significant programme of development that will deliver 100s of new affordable homes. We are therefore seeking to understand the extent to which Jews need social housing. We now wish to speak to Jewish people who have had housing issues such as finding a home they can afford in a suitable area, overcrowding, or needing to ‘downsize’ as family move away.
We are particularly interested in speaking to lone parents, pensioners and key workers. Closing date 08.05.18 For more information, go to www.ids.org.uk/ housingneed or call 020 8090 4613

News / Kippah fears / Israel praised
German Jews warned against wearing kippot The head of German Jewry has told Jews in Germany not to wear a kippah for fear of attracting anti-Semitic violence, after an Israeli man was beaten up last week. Josef Schuster, the wellrespected president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said he would “advise against” Jews wearing kippot. “Defiantly showing your colours would in principle be the right way to go,” he told German public radio. “Nevertheless, I would actually advise people against openly wearing a kippah in metropolitan Germany.” He suggested that those living in big cities could wear “a baseball cap or something else”. The 21-year-old Israeli man who was attacked said he was a non-Jew who comes
from Haifa and was wearing a kippah “as an experiment” to prove to a friend that Berlin is not anti-Semitic. He was reportedly beaten with a belt in the attack by a Syrian man who was filmed shouting ‘Yahudi’ (Jew in Arabic) during the assault in the Prenzlauer Berg district of the German capital. In response to the attack, a “kippah flashmob” comprising about 40 people gathered in central Berlin on Sunday, first congregating at Alexanderplatz, then heading towards Brandenburg Gate. “Today we were 40, next time we’ll be 100,” an organiser said on Facebook. Jewish, interfaith and political groups – including the Berlin-based Jewish Forum for Democracy and Against Anti-Semitism – also initiated plans for a visible showing of support, with a
‘ISRAEL’S TRULY A LIGHT’ Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has paid tribute to Israel’s achievements “from humble and fragile beginnings” as he joined 1,600 people celebrating its 70th birthday in London. Williamson (pictured) was speaking at Bnei Akiva’s joint Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut event at Kinloss last week. “What Israel has achieved in a mere seven decades is nothing short of remarkable,”
he said. “It has blossomed, becoming a powerhouse with a prosperous economy.” He highlighted how Israeli technology was providing electricity and water to Africa and how Israeli teams respond to disasters around the globe. “Israel truly is a light unto other nations,” he said. He pledged the government would stand with British Jewry “every step” in battling anti-Semitism. Gavin Williamson

demonstration planned for yesterday called ‘Berlin Wears a Kippah’. Both Schuster and Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller were due to speak at the event, with Schuster stressing beforehand that if Germans refuse to stand up to anti-Semitism, “our democracy would be at risk”. He added: “This is not only about anti-Semitism – it goes along with racism, it goes
along with xenophobia. You need a clear stop sign here.” However, other Jewish representatives said Schuster’s position was ill-informed. European Jewish Association president Rabbi Menachem Margolin said: “He is mistaken in the cure for this serious problem. To not wear the kippah in fear of antiSemitism actually fulfils the vision of anti-Semites.”

Genesis Prize / French anti-Semitism / Brit milah in Iceland / News
Natalie Portman: I’m dodging Netanyahu, not Israel Natalie Portman has faced condemnation from Israeli ministers after announcing she would not attend a prize ceremony in Israel to avoid appearing to endorse Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israel-born Oscar-winning actress, who had previously expressed her disappointment at the re-election of the prime minister, revealed she would not to accept in person the £1.4 million Genesis Prize at an event in June, which Netanyahu is to address. The actress’ representatives initially told organisers “recent events in Israel had been extremely distressing to her and she does not feel comfortable participating in any public events” there. But while Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev claimed she had “fallen like a ripe fruit into the hands of BDS [boycott, divestment and sanctions] movement supporters”, Portman later issued a personal statement saying: “I am not part of the BDS movement and do not endorse it. Like many
Israelis and Jews around the world, I can be critical of the leadership in Israel without wanting to boycott the entire nation. I treasure my Israeli friends and family, Israeli food, books, art, cinema, and dance. “Israel was created exactly 70 years ago as a haven for refugees from the Holocaust. But the mistreatment of those suffering from today’s atrocities is simply not in line with my Jewish values. Because I care about Israel, I must stand up against violence, corruption, inequality, and abuse of power.” Israel has been criticised in recent weeks over confrontations on its Gaza border, during which more than 30 Palestinians have been killed. It insists Hamas been coordinating violent actions and that some Palestinians taking part have thrown rocks and explosive devices at troops to try to infiltrate the border. But despite her clarification, Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s Infrastructure Minister, said she owed Israel an apology.
“Natalie Portman’s actions border on anti-Semitism,” he said, suggesting her actions “played into the hands of the haters of Israel and those who aspire to destroy the state of Israel”. Claiming that the star would not boycott China or India if they were to award her a prize, even if she disagreed with their policies, he said: “Boycotting Israel has elements of antiSemitism, because other countries that are criticised are not boycotted with such ease. “Netanyahu is the prime minister of Israel, whether you agree with him or not. To boycott a ceremony in Israel because the prime minister is supposed to take part is boycotting Israel. “If Natalie Portman had not boycotted [it], and had given an interview in which she criticised the government, the prime minister, [that would have been] legitimate.” BDS movement co-founder Omar Barghouti reportedly said Portman’s move was “arguably one of the strongest indicators yet of how toxic
the Israel brand has become, even in some liberal circles in Hollywood”. In her Instagram post, Portman said she would soon announce charities she would support in Israel. The Genesis Prize Foundation described her as “a committed social activist and a wonderful human being” but said it was “saddened she has decided not to attend the ceremony for political reasons, adding: “We fear that Ms Portman’s decision will cause our philanthropic initiative to be politicised, something we’ve worked hard to avoid”. The prize “honours individuals who serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Jews through their outstanding professional achievement along with their commitment to Jewish values and the Jewish people”.
FRENCH FIGHT HATE More than 300 French dignitaries, celebrities and intellectuals, including ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy (pictured) and actor Gerard Depardieu, have signed a manifesto calling on the government to make the fight against anti-Semitism a national priority. Referring to a “new anti-Semitism” marked by “Islamist radicalisation”, the letter was published in Sunday’s edition of Le Parisien. It said: “Anti-Semitism is not a Jewish affair, it is everyone’s. When a prime minister at the National Assembly declares that France without Jews is no longer France, it [feels like] a solemn warning.” Reflecting on a string of anti-Semitic attacks in the country over the past six months, it cites the 11
French Jews who have been killed, most latterly Holocaust survivor Mireille Knoll, 85, who was stabbed to death and set on fire in her Paris flat. It added: “Why the silence? It is because radical Islam is considered exclusively by some of the elite French parties as an expression of social revolt… because the old anti-Semitism of the extreme right is added to [that] of the radical left, which has found anti-Zionism as their alibi for transforming the executioners of Jews as victims...” The letter also said verses of the Koran advocating violence to Jews should be removed, but Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris, said the manifesto “subjected French Muslims and French Islam to an unbelievable and unfair trial”.

Iceland talks about brit milah Board of Deputies president Jonathan Arkush says he is “tentatively optimistic” about the future of brit milah in Iceland after taking part in an international interfaith conference in Reykjavik earlier this week, writes Jenni Frazer. The Inter-Faith Forum of Iceland, together with the Institute for Religious Studies of the University of Iceland, held a one-day discussion on the circumcision of boys, which brought together those opposing the practice in Iceland and those who want it to continue, both Jews and Muslims. Those giving presentations, besides Arkush, included the co-sponsor of the private member’s bill currently being considered by the Icelandic
parliament’s Judicial Affairs and Education Committee, Dr Olafur Thor Gunnarsson. He is a doctor from the country’s Green Party and said that since female circumcision had been banned in Iceland in 2005, a ban on male circumcision was a matter of equal rights. Arkush said it was the first real opportunity for supporters of brit milah to voice their arguments in a public forum in Iceland. He also met the chair of the Judicial Affairs and Education Committee, Pall Magnusson, and the Icelandic prime minister’s foreign policy adviser. “I was able to set out the arguments in favour of brit milah”, said Arkush, adding he was hopeful they were understood by the government.

There have been many Jewish representatives in the civic authorities of the Rock.

Krakow marks decade of success Krakow’s Jewish community last weekend celebrated 10 years since the birth of the city’s community centre, marking a significant milestone in the life of a project opened by Prince Charles, writes Liam Hoare. Representatives of supportive foundations and organisations, including World Jewish Relief (WJR), the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), and the Taube Center for the Renewal of Jewish Life in Poland, joined the community and Jewish Community Centre (JCC) Krakow executive director Jonathan Ornstein at the Tempel Synagogue. After a formal presentation, featuring speeches from dignitaries including the American ConsulGeneral in Krakow, as well as performances by JCC Krakow’s choir, members celebrated with an anniversary cake at the centre. WJR has been involved in JCC Krakow since its inception, managing, overseeing, and funding its construction and contributing to its annual costs. “It sounded ambitious, but there was a sense that if you build something here, you’ll have a real story,” WJR chief executive Paul Anticoti told Jewish News. “Jewish life in Poland is historically important, not just for its tragedy but for its thousand years of Jewish life – and it shouldn’t end.” The JCC, which Anticoni described as “the main Jewish address in Krakow,” has undoubtedly changed the community there. Visiting parties from Britain and elsewhere, that once would only have visited Auschwitz before returning home, now see JCC Krakow as, Ornstein said, an accessible way to connect to the Jewish present. More practically, perhaps, it has become a venue for Krakow’s Jewish residents
to access Jewish culture and knowledge and form friendships. Zofia Radizikowska, who survived the Holocaust with her mother by using fake documents, is its most active member. Speaking of Krakow’s Jewish revival among adults and children, she said: “We are the past and they are the future. I look at them with a feeling of joy because it means the Jewish community in Poland will live. We will not give a victory to Hitler.” In addition to fulfilling the original mission of housing a senior club for Holocaust survivors and children of the Shoah, in October, JCC Krakow opened its secular non-denominational preschool, which provides a subsidised Jewish education to 14 local children aged between one and six. It is the first pluralistic Jewish preschool to open in the city in 70 years. “We support each other and visit one another’s families. This, for me, is [JCC Krakow’s] biggest value,” member Ewa Kodymowska said, adding: “With my kids in the preschool, I have started to study more deeply with them and I feel closer to Jewish culture.”

Ornstein said JCC Krakow, with its 700 members, has reached maximum capacity at its existing site and needs to look for another site. “If we want to continue doing what we’re doing, we need to expand,” he said. “We’ve still got some way to go,” Anticoni said, in terms of making JCC Krakow self-sustaining. The centre is starting to resource itself and WJR’s annual contribution as a share of its running costs has declined; for the first three years, it contributed 100 percent of funding. Today it is less than 10 percent – although it remains a significant financial commitment. “We’re in it for the long term,” Anticoti said. “The ambition is to achieve more in the next 10 years than the last 10 years.”

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Only actions will do Continued from page 1 zero tolerance into a reality, though there was a pledge to look into the matter. And what message are we to take from the fact that, while recognising the BOD and JLC as the main representative bodies of British Jews, he still insists on engaging with Jewish Voice for Labour, whose representatives staged the counter-demo last month? But the issue that most illustrates the mountain left to climb is the reticence to promote the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism, along with all its accompanying, contemporary examples. Instead, the party suggests it will select examples, along with others not included, like ‘Zio’. But anti-Semitism should not and cannot be subject to a pick and mix approach. In the week marking 25 years since Stephen Lawrence was murdered, the Macpherson definition of racism as an act perceived as racist by the victim should be borne in mind. If anti-Semitism smears are genuine and the Board and JLC are the main representative bodies, as Corbyn reiterated this week, surely it is only reasonable to follow the definition they are promoting. Instead, more than perhaps anything else, this reveals an ideological barrier that will rightly fuel pessimism over whether Corbyn will be able to fully follow through on his words. So deep is the schism now after three years that only action will do. It is indeed positive that the mainstream community will continue to be consulted about educational programmes and that there are promises to conclude the Ken Livingstone and Jackie Walker cases by the end of July. But if the former ends up being little more than window dressing and the latter is not finalised by then and with the right conclusion, there should be no surprise if the next statement makes this one look like a ringing endorsement. Community leaders must continue to hold Corbyn to account, but there are only so many chances he can be given before even more people join those who have already given up on him. For Corbyn, if he seriously wants to engage with the mainstream majority, he would do well to throw them a bone – and fast – or risk the voices opposed to such engagement growing louder.

When fair comment mutates into insults As an occasional reader of Jewish News, I was appalled at the letter by Martin Stern, both at his remarks about fellow Jews and at you for allowing it to stain your pages (Jewish News, 5 April). For Mr Stern to clearly state that anyone regarded by him as “far-left” is a Nazi is completely beyond fair comment by any

A POEM TO CELEBRATE ISRAEL’S BIRTHDAY
JEWS: A RACE AND A RELIGION
I’d like to share my poem with your readers in honour of Israel’s landmark 70th birthday: Raise a glass to 70 years. Raise a voice in 70 cheers. Raise your heart in prayer, to the heavenly spheres. To the guardian of Israel, who hears. Of the opponents, ignore their jeers and Israel’s enemies’ scornful sneers. Among the gullible, they spread shambolic fears. Presenting lies as facts, seeking to damage Israel’s economic gears. Attempting to destroy the livelihood of nurses, teachers and engineers. Hoping Israel disappears. The time approaches when pruning hooks will be made from spears. When brotherhood will triumph and there will be no need for tears. Simcha Lebof By email

He could revitalise his whole project, refocus it on the core business of the Corbyn movement: liberating millions from unnecessary poverty and marginalisation, and releasing the creativity of the half of our country that is weighed down by the humiliating grind of making it through the week. Such a speech could reboot Corbyn’s image: instead of a stubborn, angry, defensive old bloke, he could find again the uplifting hopefulness of the man who promised us change, an end to austerity and a new kind of national community. But Jeremy Corbyn cannot make the speech he needs to make. It is incompatible with his own political sense of self and would exile him from his own ideological community. It would break his own inner identity. Here is the speech. “I listened to the debate about anti-Semitism last Monday and I finally understood what
I should have understood decades ago: that those who are critical of left anti-Semitism are friends and not enemies of our project to remake society in the interests of the many and not the few. “In this speech, I want to explain how I now understand that many things I have said and done have been wrong, and I want to put them right. They weren’t unconnected errors, but flowed in ways I couldn’t allow myself to see, from some deep-seated political assumptions. “Responding to Jews as though they were white oppressors, Blairites and Tories, and people who are out to get me, is part of the issue. I should’ve been able to listen to what people said and to have judged their evidence, without being put off in advance by who I thought they were. I was seriously misled by small groups of anti-Zionists, many of them Jews, speaking “as a Jew”, who seemed to be my allies, who flattered, exonerated and miseducated me. “I take responsibility, but I’m really angry with those who schooled me in extreme positions and told me not to listen. They told me Zionism was similar to Nazism, apartheid and racism, and that supporters of Zionism should be treated

THE ISSUE OF ANTISEMITISM IN THE LABOUR PARTY COMES TO AN END TODAY accordingly. “They said the Jewish community was split, that it was only duplicitous Jews who said there was a problem, and that they did it dishonestly to bolster their own power. “They said these Jews tried to use the Holocaust to whitewash their crimes against the Palestinians. They told me these Jews were only boss Jews – chief rabbis and Boards of Deputies and Jewish newspaper barons and Jewish Tories and rich Jews – and that decent working-class Jews were their victims. “They said Zionists were top of the heap and leaders of global capitalism. I now understand Zionists are actually people who were trying to rescue Jewish life itself from the ashes, from some of the most horrible oppression the world has ever seen. “I hate that the Palestinians are not free. I always did and I still do. But I can see that in my thirst to find somebody to blame, I developed a simplistic understanding of why. Not understanding that Israelis were also victims of the 20th century, I allowed my sympathy for Palestinians to become a hot anger with Israel. “I sometimes sided with its enemies without really understanding that they were part of the problem rather than the solution. I should have understood that Raed Salah used ancient blood libels. “When Paul Eisen turned out to be a Holocaust denier and Stephen Sizer to share conspiracy theories, I should have learnt something. I understand now, and I apologise. “I was a fool for allowing myself to be hosted by Hamas in Gaza. I shouldn’t have thought of Hamas and Hezbollah as being dedicated to the good of the Palestinians, to peace or justice. “I hate war and I was worried Britain and America were preparing to invade Iran. But I understand that my impulse to engage with the anti-Semitic murderers who ruled Iran was wrong. I apologise to Iranians who are oppressed and to the Jews who warned me about their antiSemitism. “I hereby write a cheque for £20,000, the money I was paid to present on Press TV, and donate it, half to the Iranian trade union movement and half to its Israeli counterpart. “I understand now that the Shami Chakrabarti report into anti-Semitism in the party fell woefully short. I should have held a genuine inquiry, not one that effectively swept things under the carpet.
Having listened to the debate in the Commons, I’m happy to be able to appoint Luciana Berger, Ruth Smeeth, Louise Ellman and Joan Ryan to lead a new inquiry. This time, I want to understand how the politics of singling out Israel for particular hatred relates to the incidents of antiSemitism that everybody can recognise. I want to clean out the Labour barrel, not just to pick out some bad apples. “Anti-Semitism in the Labour Party is an issue of politics. Ken Livingstone, who says Hitler sided with Zionists in Germany, Jackie Walker, who wants people to think of Jews as chief financiers of the sugar and slave trade, and Ken Loach, who wants Labour MPs who demonstrated against anti-Semitism to be driven out of the party, are all expelled. We do not need long quasijudicial processes to judge issues of politics. If people who have said and done partisan things change their minds, they can reapply for membership. “From now on, I want to make it clear: I’ll side with anybody who fights antiSemitism in the party and against anyone accusing them of faking it. “Nobody who pushes the politics of Israel-hatred and who legitimises anti-Semitism will do it in my name. They hinder the Corbyn project; they are not defenders of it. “This issue comes to an end today. I have said I oppose anti-Semitism many times. But I had to demonstrate I understood anti-Semitism and had to change things. I also had to make a proper political accounting for my past mistakes. I hope I have begun to do that today.” It would take all of Corbyn’s talent as a political communicator to make this speech work. He’d have to mean it, and to deliver it as if he meant it. He can’t make the speech because his own core identity as a politician is bound up with that politics. His own political family, which he has been part of for 50 years, would cast him as an enemy. What Corbyn actually did was tweet: “I pay tribute to MPs who spoke in yesterday’s antiSemitism debate, whose harrowing experiences remind us of the urgent need to eradicate antiSemitism from politics and society. There is no excuse for abuse of any kind, and I want to thank them for their bravery in speaking out.” I replied: “ They spoke out against you, Jeremy. They said your Israel hatred, your defence of anti-Semites, your support for Hamas, Hezbollah and the Iranian regime and for the mural – they said you’re responsible for the environment in which this abuse occurs. “Every time you try this trick – of condemning anti-Semitism while stubbornly refusing to understand what is being said – you make things worse.”

Whataboutism is a way to avoid other people’s pain LAURA MARKS
CO-FOUNDER, NISA-NASHIM
W
hat do Parliamentarians including Ruth Smeeth, Luciana Berger and Baroness Ros Altman have in common with business pioneers like Facebook vice president Nicola Mendelsohn and student leaders such as incoming UJS president Hannah Rose? What unites women from across the Jewish spectrum, bringing together trustees of the United Synagogue including vice president Leonie Lewis with Progressive rabbis Laura Janner-Klausner, Deborah Kahn-Harris and Charley Baginsky? The answer is that, this week, these Jewish women came together to sign a letter demanding local councils facilitate the end to gendered islamophobia, abuse and attacks on Muslim women. What’s more, they did it within a few hours. This speed of coming together was extraordinary, as was the range of the women – every age, region, Jewish
denomination and political leaning was covered. Not one of the 50 women we asked said no. Not one questioned what we were doing. Everyone signed up immediately. Gendered islamophobia, a phrase being driven by prominent Muslim women, is on the rise. According to Tell MAMA – the national project which records and measures antiMuslim incidents – visibly Muslim women are more likely to be targeted for racial abuse and attacks on the streets, than men. This is a simply astonishing statistic and something has to be done about it. But why are Jewish women taking action? Why are we writing to councillors, and those standing for election, about anti-Muslim hatred when our newspapers are full of what is happening to us as Jews? There is a huge rise in anti-Semitism at the moment and we are right to be worried. All of us on the #EnoughIsEnough demonstration outside Parliament share the same upset, anger and fear over what is happening. And as chair of the Holocaust

YOU CAN’T MENTION A PROBLEM WITHOUT HEARING: ‘AH YES, BUT WHAT ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE...’
Memorial Day Trust, I am deeply aware of Holocaust denial, a particularly pernicious form of anti-Semitism as it slowly eats away at people and slowly erodes belief that such an incredible time in history actually existed. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore other problems. Whataboutism is a scourge of modern day life. You can’t mention one problem without hearing: ‘Ah yes, but what about something else.” So often this whataboutism is a way of not listening to other peoples pains and simply focusing on our own. This letter came about because we Jewish women, regardless of
what is going on in our community, decided collectively to stand up for our Muslim sisters and say Enough – Dayenu. The letter was followed up by the Nisa-Nashim conference, which took place on Sunday and was the biggest gathering of Muslim and Jewish women in Europe. We ate together, laughed together, sang together and even did poetry and learned self defence together. And we also didn’t shy away from tough topics. Sessions covered Israel-Palestine, the first time this has been discussed at a Nisa-Nashim event, as well as how to have difficult conversations when our faiths diverge. Coming out of the conference it has become even more obvious to me that it is only when we hear the suffering of others, and when we accept our similarities as minorities or outsiders, that we can truly drive change. It doesn’t diminish us to stand up for others. I’m proud that as Jewish women, we have stood side-by-side with our Muslim cousins, put Whataboutism to one side, showing we have more in common.
Natalie Portman won’t be the last to take this stand JENNI FRAZER
P
olitics, we are often told, makes strange bedfellows – a dictum of which we could scarcely fail to be reminded in the wake of the Natalie Portman furore. For those who have been asleep in their caves over the winter and are just peering out to see if it’s spring yet, the Oscar-winning actress, born Neta-Lee Herschlag in Jerusalem, left the country for America with her parents when she was four. Portman has made a point, as her international career garnered her more fame, of saying she would not attack Israel from abroad. And someone in the hierarchy of the Genesis Prize, often described as the Jewish Nobel awards, must have thought that giving one of this year’s prizes to Portman would have sprinkled a pretty measure of stardust, real and assumed, over the ceremony in this 70th independence year. But – and of course, there are several “buts” in this story – Portman balked at the
last minute. Her decision last Friday not to travel to Israel to receive the $2million Genesis Prize, which she had chosen to give to women’s charities, threw the whole event into disarray, and, in fact, the June ceremony has now been cancelled. She said she felt “uncomfortable” about going to Israel to receive the prize. It emerged later that one of the sources of discomfort was that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was due to give a speech at the award ceremony, and she did not wish to appear to endorse him. Here’s the second “but”. Portman may be many things, but stupid isn’t one of them. In a gracious but sad statement, the Genesis Prize people made it clear that they and she had been in touch for months about the mechanics of getting the prize, and presumably she was aware that Bibi was a participant on stage. So how disingenuous was it of Portman to wait until the week of Israel’s independence celebrations to drop her little grenade that she wasn’t going to attend? Trying to clarify, Portman claimed: “Like many Israelis and Jews around the world, I can be critical of the leadership in
Israel without wanting to boycott the entire nation. I treasure my Israeli friends and family, Israeli food, books, art, cinema, and dance.” In some respects I rather admire Portman for refusing to take part in an event with someone she plainly despises. It has many echoes of the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment in Hollywood, with which she has been closely associated. Nevertheless, there is some regrettable fall-out from her decision. The first is that the women’s charities she chose, which would have benefited from some of that $2million, will now not receive it, and that is a shame. And the second is that Portman’s contro-
❝
versial stance has brought the usual suspects out of the asylum, with right-wing politicians such as Oren Hazan calling for the Interior Minister, Arye Deri, to revoke Portman’s Israeli citizenship, just because she had the temerity to say she didn’t like the prime minister and that the “mistreatment of those suffering from today’s atrocities is simply not in line with my Jewish values”. It’s quite refreshing to hear a Hollywood star speaking candidly, even if one disagrees with her; and I also don’t think Portman will be the last to make such a declaration. Israel needs to pay attention to the disaffected diaspora. As for Portman, her choice was to reject the strange bedfellow.

CRUISE YOUR WAY TO
FOR LESS
Patric Gaudini tells Alex Galbinski how Affordable Luxury Travel, and its newest brand, Paramount Cruises, help its clients save money on their dream holiday
W
hat if you like the finer things in life and enjoy exploring other cultures and countries, but don’t want to spend a fortune doing so? Affordable Luxury Travel (ALT) has been offering clients just what it says on the tin. Indeed, the company’s motto is, “Why pay more to travel in style?” while its tagline advises clients to “dream, explore, discover.” Patric Gaudini, ALT’s head of luxury travel who has a strong background in the tour operations market, tells me the company specialises in tailor-made luxury exploration to suit all agendas. Clients can, for example, combine the buzz of a city with the calm found in nature, and, importantly, the itineraries can suit most budgets. “You can buy a cruise for under £200 – for example, if you go to Bruges and back – or you can go on a worldwide 180-day cruise for £60,000,” he explains. “The products we feature range from four-star luxury to opulent seven-star luxury, such as the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai, or the Six Senses in Vietnam. We can cater for it all.” But, he emphasises: “The main point is that we can save all our clients, whether leisure or corporate, substantial amounts of money. “On the leisure side, with ALT, we save clients 20 to 40 percent, while for the corporate sector, we can save them between 30 to 50 percent.” Speaking of the leisure sector, the Fitzrovia-based company has just set up a new brand called Paramount Cruises, (paramountcruises.com), which falls under the ALT stable. Gaudini, who also heads up this new brand, explains: “The cruise sector is a very specialised industry and has to be handled in a different way from any other product. “Therefore, we have hired personnel from big companies in the cruise market with vast amounts of experience to market and sell the products.” ALT is a member of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry trade association, and it now works with all the major players in the sector – of which there are thousands. “We deal with every major cruise company globally and we can feature and
accommodate any client for any cruise worldwide – whether it’s MSC, Costa, Cunard, or others – we cover them all. “Within the next six months, we are looking to become one of the major players within the cruise industry,” Gaudini says. “If someone wants the Far East, we can do it. If someone wants Europe, we can do it. If someone wants four-star, we can do it, and, likewise, if someone wants sevenstar, we can do it.” But it’s not just the locations it offers that are plus points. The company has also invested heavily to ensure it has the most recent hardware to help clients create their perfect trip. “Paramount Cruises uses the latest technology to get up-to-date live availability and pricing, which effectively puts us ahead in the marketplace. This fits in well with our Affordable Luxury Travel brand, because it works with that customer base.” There are around 40 brands under the Moresand Group’s umbrella and, Gaudini says: “ALT’s latest brand, Paramount Cruises, works in a complementary fashion.” They are protected by ATOL and ABTA and were set up by Moresand’s managing director, P S Kang, also its founder and owner. ALT and Paramount Cruises are able to provide such good value for money, says Gaudini, thanks to Moresand’s role as a tour operator rather than a travel agent. “As a group, we are the appointed agents for all the major airlines, and we work with all the large hotel chains, as well as with boutique properties. “We contract direct with all destination management companies. That means we cut out the middle men and go direct to the source, saving all our clients a minimum of 20 percent.” Clockwise from top: Norwegian Breakaway cruising through Stockholm; Iguazu Falls on the Brazil-Argenina border; and Botafogo Bay and Sugar Loaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The mensch who told the world about the Shoah Michael Freedland reveals the background to his biography of Holocaust survivor Ben Helfgott, who went on to represent Great Britain at the Olympics
B
en Helfgott is not your usual idea of a weightlifter. He is also probably not your idea of a Holocaust survivor. If you think of the first being a tall, muscular figure, he breaks all the rules and represented his adopted Great Britain at two Olympic Games. Every day, at 87, he still practices with equipment that scares the life out of me – just to look at. The weights are almost hidden in his upstairs room, the one crammed with books and files, the number and diversity of which also made me blink. He has never been taller than 5ft 3inches. Yet the muscles are there still. As for being a survivor, show me another one who likes Poles as much as this man born in the Polish small town of Piotrkow does. As for Germans, he says: “I am not going to blame anyone for the sins of their fathers.” If you were to ask me why I decided to write his biography (Ben Helfgott: The Story of One of The Boys), there you have the answer. As a junior newspaper reporter (I won’t tell you when, but under no circumstances could I be called “junior”any more) I was taught to have an interest in everything that cropped up. Ben has to be a journalist’s goldplated gift. I first met Ben in 1983. Even then, I thought he would be a subject for a book – one very different from the usual writing I did about nostalgic show business figures, such as Al Jolson, who also became the subject of my first West End musical, or Fred Astaire, with whom I spent weeks working on both an authorised biography and a BBC radio series. Yes, Ben Helfgott was going to be different and so was his story, which I began to pick up all those years ago on a trip to Auschwitz and Warsaw – the reason we were both there was the 40th anniversary commemoration of the Ghetto uprising. And,yes, I had been told to be interested and try to write about anything – in those early days, even about flower shows and local weddings. We talked, this little figure with the big history and I, during the 24 years of my BBC Radio London programme You Don’t Have To Be Jewish. I interviewed many Holocaust survivors, but Ben stood out. Plainly, a survivor of Buchenwald and a list of other horror camps who then goes on to be an Olympic athlete after
becoming a British citizen, was going to be exceptional. I didn’t know how exceptional. He is nothing less than obsessed with sport – of almost any kind (except swimming, which he was never able to enjoy or accept as seriously as most other athletic achievements). We would sit in the lounge of his home in Harrow day after day (I estimated it would all take about a year; as it turned out, multiply that by three). He spoke colourfully about a subject for which there was no colour (except the blood of the Nazis’ millions of victims). He talked about working in factories, ill treated by Poles, labouring in terrible conditions without pay, although he denies being a slave labourer, which he undoubtedly was; about seeing lines of people going to the gas chambers.
Below and right: Ben Helfgott was captain of Team GB’s weightlifting teams at the Olympics in Melbourne, 1956 and Rome, 1960
From left: A young Helfgott; with his sister, Mala Tribich; and with former Prime Minister David Cameron and Nick Clegg
The Shoah is still in his blood. The Games came and went. He doesn’t hide how hard his life always was. He knows, too, that he has been an example to a large tranche of Jews. I asked his three sons if he was an egoist. No,they say, that was not it at all. People needed to know and he was the one to tell them. It was almost a crusade, to use a very un-Jewish term. He read the book’s manuscript with the proverbial magnifying glass. There were constant phone calls, querying the tiniest detail. But that was purely to make sure there were no mistakes. Even if it took three years to achieve that. The word for him comes naturally when you talk about a former athlete with an incredible gift of languages and a knowledge of the world. He is, above all, a mensch.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, HOLOCAUST EDUCATIONAL TRUST
“There is nothing usual about Ben Helfgott.” The opening words of Michael Freedland’s new biography of Ben Helfgott MBE encapsulate how many people feel about this exceptional man. A family man, Olympian and Holocaust survivor, Ben’s life is an inspiration. Through his work as a Trustee of the Holocaust Educational Trust over the last three decades, I’ve had the privilege to work closely with Ben, but I am still astounded when I think of all he has endured and all he has achieved. Ben’s incredible life began with his childhood in Piotrkow, Poland, where he excelled in school and enjoyed racing his playmates in the town’s streets. After the Nazi invasion, the family were forced into a crowded ghetto. Ben lost his mother Sara and sister Luisa when they were led away and murdered in the surrounding woods. He witnessed the deportation of family members to death camps and in 1944 was sent to Buchenwald. By the time Ben was liberated in 1945, he and his sister Mala were the family’s sole survivors and 90 percent of the Jews from Piotrkow had been killed. Freedland shows that what was once a thriving Jewish community had been reduced to nothing. Ben’s father was shot on a death march and his loss shapes much of the book’s narrative. Moishe Helfgott not only cared for his own family but also smuggled food into the ghetto

to help keep others alive. He was a brave leader whose death weeks before liberation remains incomprehensible to Ben. His admiration for his father helped guide his outlook on life. Ben is a loving and strong father, an illustration of what his own father instilled in him and describes his three sons as menschen – a title I’m sure they would bestow upon him too. A valuable aspect of this work is the chance for us to read about Ben as a family man, as well as a survivor. There are some entertaining chapters on what it’s like to live with such a powerful personality, who is adored by his wife Arza. Freedland describes how after arriving in the UK as one of “The Boys”, Ben studied at a grammar school, catching up with, and surpassing many of his classmates. Moreover, a book about Ben wouldn’t be complete without mention of his Olympic career. He competed in the 1950 Maccabiah Games in weightlifting and won gold. I remain amazed at his being able to do so, just a few years after liberation. Ben captained the British Olympic weightlifting team and is the only Holocaust survivor to have competed in two Olympics. This biography highlights Ben’s contribution to Holocaust education, both as a spokesperson for survivors and as a founder and now Honorary President of the ’45 Aid Society. Just last year, the Holocaust Educational Trust presented Ben with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Ben began weightlifting by simply saying, “I can do that” and has proved this and more. His is certainly no ordinary life.

Burgers on the BBQ have that uniquely smoky flavour that enhances the taste. Quick and easy to make for a mid-week supper or family gathering, add this recipe to your repertoire. Lamb and mint have a great affinity. I have added fresh mint for a subtle, but balanced effect. To prevent them sticking to the grill rack, coat sparingly with rapeseed oil. I like to serve in pitta bread spread with hummus for a Mediterranean touch.
processor. Use food processor on pulse setting, as some texture is the desired consistency. Divide and shape into eight equal portions and place on a plate lined with baking parchment paper. Place at the bottom of the fridge, covered with cling film for 1 hour to rest. Brush with rapeseed oil. Pre-heat the grill or light a BBQ. Cook over a medium heat for 8 to 10 minutes on each side. Toast the pita bread either under the grill or on the BBQ for 2 minutes. Spread a thin layer of hummus inside the baby gem lettuce.

SEDRA
It’s Biblical
Acharei Mot BY RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF
Everything you wanted to know about your favourite Torah characters, and the ones you’ve never heard of...
BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN
When faced with unimaginable personal tragedy – the death of his two sons – Aaron’s silence is deafening. However, in this week’s sedra, Acharei Mot, which means literally, “After the Death”, Aaron the High Priest resumes his regular duties. At the time, Aaron’s response was a dignified silence, containing his personal pain and accepting this was part of a master plan whose details he was not privy to. After this episode, God invites Aaron to keep on going though instructing him to perform the Yom Kippur service. This was by far the most complex service in the Temple, but it was one that brought forgiveness and future to the Jewish People on an annual basis. Everything has its time: “A time to be born, a time to die. A time to plant, a time to reap.” Aaron’s response was understandable, commendable under the circumstances, but he couldn’t remain in that place forever. God therefore tells him it’s time to move on, to keep going. I cannot help but relate this process of mourning and healing to the period through which we have journeyed as a people over the past 70 years, as reflected in the days of commemoration marked in the Jewish calendar at this time. We have recently marked Yom Hashoah and Yom Hazikaron with their minutes of silence. Tragedies stun us, they force us to reflect, but our sedra teaches us that should only be a temporary holding pattern. In order to ensure a brighter Jewish future we need to emulate the words of King David, “so that my Soul may make music to You and not be silenced.”
Naftali Schiff is the founder and CEO of Jewish Futures Trust
THIS WEEK:
JONATHAN
Jonathan, the first heir to the throne of Israel, is a character who has always fascinated me, not least because I carry his name! King Saul perceived the young David (he of Goliath slaying fame) as a threat and sought to employ all means at his disposal to kill him. As the son of Saul, Jonathan could have had an easy route to power and prestige by following in his father’s footsteps and becoming his ‘yes’ man. However Jonathan opted for a different route, one of friendship and love, rather than Machiavellian
❝
HIS FRIENDSHIP WITH DAVID WAS SO SINCERE, JONATHAN WAS WILLING TO FORGO THE THRONE
Jonathan gifted David his robe, tunic and sword as an act of friendship
politics. His relationship with David is described by the Sages in Pirkei Avot as being a prime example of unconditional love, one that we are all enjoined to emulate. The Hebrew word for friend is chaver, which is derived from the root chibbur,
connection. True friendship puts the other person first, because there is a genuine connection that comes from care and compassion. Jonathan’s friendship with David was so authentic, so sincere, that he was willing to forgo the throne and take the number two spot in favour of his beloved friend. Their relationship was not based on anything external, it was not about what they were looking to get out of it, rather what they were looking to put in. Perhaps this is hinted at in his name, Yonatan, or Yehonatan which means, “God has given”. Someone who realises that all of our resources are opportunities to perfect the world will be able to step aside and allow someone else to take centre stage, because in reality, all of life is an unearned gift. This is a lofty level to live up to, but one that can radically alter our perspective on life, for the better.

The Bible Says What? ‘He who curses his father or mother shall surely be put to death’
Should prejudiced parents be allowed to pull their kids out of lessons about Islam?
RABBI MIRIAM BERGER As a rabbi I see my fair share of family broigeses, despite my own family being inevitably a model of perfection! However, the idea the Torah deems a child who disrespects their parent as a crime worthy of capital punishment is surely an over-reaction. It’s the negative articulation of the fifth of the “10 commandments”, honour your father and mother, so that you should live a long life. Commentators found practical reasons for this, seeing an agricultural society who relied on each generation working together for their very survival. However I see a powerfully timeless message here. Why does respecting your parents mean you live longer, while cursing them is akin to your own death? The answer lies in the response of the third generation. If you show your children the respect you have for your parents, you set the ex-
ample of how you anticipate being treated in old age. You then live well, being supported in later life and living on as they embody your values long after you have died. But if the third generation see you cursing their grandparents, you are diminished in their eyes. There is a role reversal; in your curses they see their parent behaving as a cross teenager, creating a cycle of disrespect. He that curses his parents becomes so childlike that it is as if the third generation have lost a parental figure, as if you have died. This verse of Torah is our warning to treat your parents as you would want your children to treat you. Though we know that sometimes cursing is inevitable, the challenge is to parent differently, so as to protect the next generation. Rabbi Miriam Berger is rabbi of Finchley Reform Synagogue
BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY Unusually for a question answered by a rabbi, this one can be resolved in just one word – NO. Like most, I was shocked to read reports – stemming from the Association of Teachers and Lecturers’ annual conference – that parents with prejudices, including Islamophobia, want to remove their children from certain lessons or visiting places of worship. One such letter from a parent to the school was so full of racist language that authorities had to be informed. This is clearly indefensible. These lessons are vital to preparing children to live in modern Britain alongside people of multiple faiths and none and the bigotry of their parents should not be able to prevent this. However, there is debate as to whether parents should be able to pull their kids out of religious education lessons, because of their own deeply-held religious beliefs.

If you are devout, then surely putting belief in God up to academic scrutiny seems odd. If you believe your children are on the right path, should it be challenged? Interestingly, this is a key part of Judaism. Since the beginning we have always questioned and wrestled with the ideas of God and belief. This is why the Talmud always records the minority opinion. This is why Liberal Judaism was born 115 years ago and thrives today.
I had a Catholic grandmother, so learned about Christianity from her as a child. Rather than making me question or leave my own Judaism, it actually gave me a fascination of faith and led me to study theology at university. The only way we can expect people to be tolerant of our beliefs is through education, and so the same must be true the other way around. If all we know about Islam is what we read in the press or see on social media then that gives us an entirely warped view. Instead we should see the beauty in Islam, which in turn will help us build a more tolerant society. By taking our children out of religious education classes with the worry they will somehow be radicalised by Islam, all we are achieving is radicalising them against Islam instead. SWEETTREE HOME CARE SERVICES Dear Nicki What advice would you offer someone on choosing the right provider for care and support at home? Susan Dear Susan Many of the initial calls we receive at SweetTree are from clients and families unsure about the type of support they
need. When choosing your home care provider, you aren’t just trusting them to help you maintain your health, your lifestyle and your well-being – you’re also trusting them to help you maintain who you are. Choosing the right provider can transform your quality of life by providing practical and emotional support and companionship. Here are some tips to help you in choosing the appropriate quality home care services: • Research different home care agencies; some industry recommended tools to find this information are online directories such as Care Quality Commission, Age UK Business Directory and homecare.co.uk. • Prepare a list of your
in person and depend on your particular circumstances and whether you have heirs whose inheritance you wish to protect. This is where seeking financial advice can help provide a valuable base knowledge to make use of those pieces that best fit your financial objectives. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. needs and expectations as well as concerns – be ready for that initial conversation with care providers. • Word of mouth is the most credible reinforcement of a quality provider – speak to families of current clients, GPs, and other community members. • Look for companies that invest heavily in training and development for their carers. • Rather than simply ensuring the care provider can meet your needs, it’s worth viewing home care as an opportunity to improve your quality of life. Look for providers offering an innovative approach to care that enables you to socialise, engage with your local community and pursue interests.
LOUISE LEACH PRINCIPLE
DANCING WITH LOUISE Dear Louise My daughter is quite reserved and not great at trying new things, but she absolutely loves to dance. When I mention summer camp, she gets very overwhelmed and says she’d rather stay at home. I could arrange some play dates, but can’t help thinking she’d
get more out of being at a camp with children her age. What are your thoughts – should I keep pushing her to go or just let her stay at home? Michelle Dear Michelle A reputable summer camp is definitely a great place to go to as they are designed to engage and inspire children with fun activities. If the organisation promises a warm team of staff, this can also really boost a child’s confidence, leaving them buzzing with excitement and looking forward to the next day. Choosing a camp that offers dance is definitely a good place to start, and
I would recommend seeing if one of her friends can join her. Failing that, chat with the director of the camp to talk through your concerns, as they should be used to dealing with shy children. We get several children attending our camps on their own, and it is amazing to see how quickly they make new friends and have a great time. Maybe you could just book for one day to see how it goes, and make a deal with your daughter that she only stays for the week if she has a good time? Good luck and I wish you both a wonderful summer whatever you decide to do.

Described as “London’s theatrical event of 2018” by Sunday Express, the multi-award winning and critically acclaimed Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King And I will be playing at London’s iconic Palladium for a strictly limited 14-week run from 21 June to 29 September. With one of the finest scores, including; I Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You and Shall We Dance, and featuring a company of more than 50 world-class performers, The King and I is a testament to the lavish heritage of gloriously romantic musical theatre.
