Giving his ruling at Westminster Magistrates, District Judge John Zani said he was “satisfied, beyond reasonable doubt”, that Alison Chabloz, 53, had intended to insult those at whom it was aimed. (pictured), Chabloz ((pictured from Glossop in Derbyshire, had written three songs which denied the Holocaust and which claimed that Jews were in a conspiracy to take over the world.

She pleaded not guilty to five charges — including one said to have been committed while she was on bail for the other

four counts. The charges were that she had sent “by a public communications network an offensive, indecent or menacing message or material”. This is in contravention of Section 127 of the 2003 Communications Act. Chabloz had performed two of the songs at a gathering of the far-right London Forum in September 2016, and uploaded them subsequently to YouTube. The third song was uploaded to YouTube in September 2017.

The songs were played in court and Chabloz was repeatedly asked in her earlier appearances what she meant by the lyrics. But she insisted that her lyrics were a comic take on “the so-called Holocaust”, which she said had been “used to sustain the criminal state of Israel.” One of those song’s lyrics also referred to Auschwitz as being a “theme park”.

Judge Zani’s ruling was greeted with shouts of “Shame!” from Chabloz’s supporters in the public gallery.

There were angry clashes between supporters of both sides outside court.

Reacting to the verdict, Gideon Falter, chairman of the Campaign Against Antisemitism, who brought the private prosecution against Chabloz, said: “She’s dedicated herself over the years to inciting people to Continued on page 2

BOARD WELCOMES UK VOTE ON TERRITORIES The Board of Deputies has welcomed the UK’s vote against the World Health Organisation (WHO) establishing a fact-finding mission in the Palestinian territories to assess the healthcare situation. The vote, at the WHO’s World Health Assembly, was passed with 90 countries in favour and six against, these being the UK, the US, Israel, Canada, Australia and Guatemala, which last week moved its embassy to Jerusalem.

TORIES OPEN TEL AVIV STOCK EXCHANGE Senior Tories, including a former minister and former chief whip, opened the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange this week, as part of a new-style trade delegation to Israel. The first-of-its-kind bilateral trade trip featuring MPs was organised by lobby group Conservative Friends of Israel and included former Chief Whip Mark Harper and former International Trade Minister Mark Garnier. They visited Israeli companies working in tech, security, medicine and finance.

King’s adopts IHRA definition

King’s College London (KCL) has adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antiSemitism and set out tough new guidelines in order to ensure the safety and security of students and staff at its campuses.

It is thought KCL is the first academic institution in the country to adopt the IHRA definition along with all its accompanying examples of contemporary anti-Semitism.

The definition was rejected

by London’s School of Oriental and African Studies last March for being “too controversial”.

Professor Ed Byrne, the neuroscientist who has been principal of KCL for the past four years, has been engaged in talks with the Board of Deputies, UK Lawyers for Israel, Jewish students and Rabbi Lord Sacks, who is an emeritus professor at KCL, to hammer out details of the new proposals.

King’s is said to be the first university to adopt the definition

His entire senior team, he told Jewish News, had unanimously endorsed the adoption of the IHRA definition. A similar definition relating to Islamophobia has also been adopted.

Byrne said KCL had seen some difficult and distressing campus meetings where speakers had been disrupted and students felt intimidated, and he was determined to stamp this out.

“We have three key priorities: freedom of speech – we’re not allowing ‘no platform’ – but always in the context of the law.

“Second, we will allow peaceful protest, but we have not put enough effort into defining and controlling how protests will take place.”

That will change, he said, as protesters will be made to demonstrate far enough away from any meeting so they do not

disrupt it with noisy chanting.

Megaphones or loudhailers will be banned, Byrne said.

His third priority was that “everyone on campus, students and staff and visitors, feels completely safe. That’s safe from any physical violence, but also safe from hate speech”.

Discussions would continue to take place about the use of cameras by protesters, whether or not events should be ticketed, and the moderating of speech within events by independent chairs. Banners or flags will not be permitted inside lecture theatres.

Byrne said there were a range of behaviours “that go beyond acceptable debate”, which would not be tolerated.

“Anti-Semitism is totally unacceptable in our community. We have an absolute commitment for Jewish students not only to feel safe, but to feel welcomed.”

“We will be the best connected university with Israel,” he said, adding that KCL is planning a large-scale medical research conference later this year, which he hoped more than 300 plus Israelis would attend.

He said he was keen to expand ties with universities in Israel as well as those elsewhere in the Middle East.

Former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks told Jewish News: “The steps taken by KCL, under the leadership of its principal Ed Byrne, to tackle the issues of anti-Semitism on campus, and especially in the adoption of the IHRA definition of antisemitism, are important and welcomed.

“KCL has always been home to a significant Jewish student population and I look forward to this being the case for many years to come.”

The conviction of Alison Chabloz is the latest success for Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) in bringing anti-Semites to justice. Just a week before she was pronounced guilty, another antiSemite, Jeremy Bedford-Turner was led from the dock to begin a year-long sentence for a speech inciting hatred against Jews.

Ms Chabloz had dedicated herself over the course of years to inciting hatred against Jews, principally by claiming that the Holocaust was a hoax perpetrated by Jews to defraud the world.

Mr Bedford-Turner had been a key organiser of the 2015 “anti-Jewification” rally in London and his speech had even included medieval blood libel.

Neither case was in any way borderline.

Mr Bedford-Turner was convicted unanimously by a jury after a very short trial, and District Judge

Zani ruled that he was “entirely satisfied” and “by some considerable margin” that Ms Chabloz was guilty.

What is so remarkable is that neither Ms Chabloz or Mr Bedford-Turner would have been brought to justice had matters been left to the state.

Indeed, the Crown Prosecution Service fought us tooth and nail in court to avoid having to prosecute. In both cases, the institutions responsible for protecting British Jews had insisted that no crimes had been committed.

By winning these cases and others, CAA is establishing vital principles on the legality of Holocaust denial, the standing of the international definition of anti-Semitism, and at which point anti-Semitism becomes a criminal offence.

But why is it being left to us?

We will not stop going to court to bring antiSemites to justice and force the state to act, but the Jewish community, through CAA, is uniquely having to take Jewish victims’ cases to court and enforce the law ourselves.

That is a national disgrace.

Former May aide: Terror group must be banned Theresa May’s former chief-ofstaff has called for her government to finally proscribe Hezbollah in its entirety, thereby ending a legal loophole that will enable the public display of the terror group’s flag on the streets of London next weekend, writes Justin Cohen.

Nick Timothy, a key voice at the heart of government until his resignation following the Tories’ disastrous election showing last year, spoke out as the government continues to resist widespread calls for the political wing to be banned alongside the alreadyproscribed military wing.

The fact both share the same flag – emblazoned with a rifle – has given the green light for organisers of the annual Al Quds Day parade on 10 June to say it can be displayed at the event. Police also confirmed today they are powerless to take action without “reasonable suspicion” the waver is a member or supporter of the banned part.

march is, rightly, a tough one,” Timothy told Jewish News. “If the police think a march will cause ‘serious public disorder’ they can ask the home secretary to ban it. If they do not do so the home secretary cannot stop any march going ahead.

“The real problem Al Quds Day exposes is that Hezbollah is not fully proscribed in Britain. It should be and, if it was proscribed, this march could not go ahead in its existing form.”

Hezbollah – which itself doesn’t distinguish between the two wings – is already proscribed in full by the US and the Arab League, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan has repeatedly urged the home office, since last year’s event, to exercise its power to do the same. Those calls have been echoed by communal leaders and MPs from all sides of the House, who repeated those demands following the recent appointment of Sajid Javid as home secretary.

Caplin to lead JLM A former MP is set to take on the leadership of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM).

Ivor Caplin, who was MP for Hove from 1997 to 2005, said he offered “experience and determination to rid Labour of anti-Semitism” after he emerged as the only candidate to succeed Jeremy Newmark as chair. He takes on the role at the organisation’s AGM on 3 June.

The former defence and foreign minister said his top priority will be to ensure the Labour leadership understands that “zero tolerance means zero tolerance” in fighting a “poison” in the party. But he said: “The vast majority of members, those in Parliament, the NEC and party headquarters believe we shouldn’t be a party that ever entertains antiSemitism, given we never have in the past.”

Jeremy Corbyn is someone he can work with, he said. And while he believes there is a better understanding among the leadership of the scale of the issue following the “welcome intervention” of the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council, Labour must move to deal more quickly with complaints.

“I’m focused on outcomes rather than procedures,” he said. “That will be a hallmark of my chairmanship.”

He also welcomed comments by the new general secretary Jennie Formby, insisting that JLM will remain the only affiliate representing the “real voice” of Labour Jews within the party.

He takes on the challenge a month after

the Tories regained Barnet – the number one target for Labour at the recent local elections.

“Like you I want to see a Labour government,” he wrote to JLM members, “and yet this single issue is stopping us from winning in areas not just in London but in the north-west of England too. The fact it’s starting to affect our electoral prospects is focusing minds.”

As JLM’s chair in the south-east for the past two years, Caplin was at the forefront of successful efforts to expel Tony Greenstein. But he said the activist should “never have been allowed into the party” in the first place.

He also decried the actions of MP Chris Williamson in addressing a Momentum meeting with Greenstein hours after his expulsion – calling for the whip to be withdrawn for this and his approach to Marc Wadsworth’s expulsion.

Caplin has proposed moving the JLM office to the Westminster area and vowed to lead efforts to “raise new funding streams to secure the long-term future of JLM”.

Turning to Israel, he said: “JLM is the majority representative political organisation of left-leaning British Jews. We are Zionist. But that does not mean we blindly support the government of Israel.

“It does mean that I want to have a constructive friendship with progressive parties in Israel, including our sister party for the longer term and support all efforts for peace.”

But, given that Parliament has “consciously” chosen to proscribe only the military wing, she wrote:

“Flying a Hezbollah flag on its own does not necessarily indicate support for the proscribed element when all parts of Hezbollah share the same flag. There needs to be further actions that arose this suspicion.”

Jewish News meets... Ehud Barak

‘Netanyahu has lost Israel’s tenth prime minister tells Jenni Frazer about his tumultuous time in office, his hopes and fears for the future of the Jewish state and having permanent jet-lag Ehud Barak’s memoir has a what-it-says-on-thetin title: My Country, My Life, Fighting for Israel, Searching for Peace. Israel’s 10th prime minister, from 1999 to 2001, is still, at 76, the joint most highly decorated soldier in Israel’s history, and it is clear that the one-time kibbutznik takes no prisoners — literally or metaphorically.

Barak was the legendary commander of Sayeret Matkal, the hotshot special services unit whose trademark was daring raids on enemy territory. He became chief of staff before segueing into politics and can arguably be described as the last of a generation of stunning leaders for which Israel became famous.

And now he sits in London in the middle of a round of whirlwind interviews to promote his book — and unlike any other Israeli politician I have ever met outside Israel, the usually low-key Barak is

forthright with his criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He calls his book “a wakeup call” to the Israeli public and has had ample opportunity to view Israel objectively during the time of writing it. With a smile, he says he “hopes not to have to return to front-line politics”, but he doesn’t rule it out, either.

“Never say never,” he advises.

“We have a compelling imperative [to pursue the two-state solution], not for the benefit of the Palestinians.”

“You know,” Barak says, stretching his stocky frame, “I have almost permanent jet lag. So at two in the morning I tweet. I call it ‘trumping’”, he grins.

In these tweets, and obviously more expansively in the book, Barak voices his anxiety for the future of Israel and the direction in which Netanyahu’s right wing government is leading the country.

He charges Netanyahu with “creating an existential threat

when the truth is that we are the most powerful country in the region”, and worries about attacks on Israel’s democratic institutions “by our own government”.

The ancient Greeks, Barak recalls, “used to say that if you don’t know which direction you are going in, no wind will take you. But this right-wing government knows very well its direction – since 2015 its intention has been to close off any possibility of disengagement with the Palestinians.

This is the vision of one state over the whole of the Biblical land. It’s a very tempting, almost seductive vision for any Jew, including myself — but only when my eyes are closed. Then I open them and see the reality”.

If anyone is well placed to criticise Netanyahu, it is Barak, who has known the prime minister since Bibi and his late brother, Yoni (who was killed in the 1976 Entebbe raid) were both members of Sayeret Matkal. He served as

with the apparent failure of the left — the ideology in which Barak was brought up and served as a politician —to provide a credible alternative to the current government.

Barak sighs. “Here’s the difference between right wing and left wing electors. The right wing operates like fans of a football club. Their guy is always right, even when he’s wrong. And the left wing functions like a debate class at university, always talking about how the world should have looked.” I am left with the distinct impression that Barak would give both sides a good “schmeiss” if he could.

The essence of Zionism, says Barak, “was never to wait for others to define us. We had to take our fate in our hands and not sit idly by.” As long as 15 years ago, he says, he was warning that Israel had to act on its own behalf, not worrying about what the Palestinian leadership was or was not doing. So he is supremely unconcerned about Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas’s state of health or who will come after him. Israel, he says, has to make choices for its own sake, not for the sake of its putative partners.

It’s fair to say that Barak – who says he wrote the book out of a desire to “tell the truth” – is at his most passionate and furious when detailing the attacks he says the current government has mounted on Israel’s democracy. “It’s auto-immune disease where the body attacks itself. The Israeli Supreme Court is under harsh direct attack; civil society, NGOs, human rights groups, you name it, are attacked by the government which tries to define the centre left as traitors; the free media is under direct attack; and even the basic value sets of the IDF, which, together with the Supreme Court, protected Israeli leadership from being taken to the International Court at The Hague – that ethical code is under direct attack from our own government.

OXFORD CHABAD CENTRE TARGETED The Jewish community centre used by students in Oxford was targeted twice in anti-Semitic attacks, with perpetrators spreading white powder and starting a fire outside the building. Talcum powder was flung over the garbage bins at the Chabad Student Centre last Wednesday and offensive letters left at the building, the This is Oxfordshire daily newspaper reported. On Friday, racist notes were left around the building and a fire was started outside the building. Police have appealed for help from the public.

BARBARA WINTON AT LIBERAL BIENNIAL The daughter of Kindertransport hero Sir Nicholas Winton is to address Liberal Judaism’s Biennial event this year, via a skype link from a refugee camp. Barbara Winton, the biographer for her father who died aged 106 in 2015, will speak at the event to mark the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransport and the issue of modern refugees.

Roman makes aliyah after UK blocks visa Israeli officials this week confirmed that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has received Israeli citizenship after his British visa was not renewed.

An official from Israel’s Immigration Ministry added that the Chelsea football club owner arrived in Israel on Monday.

SHELLFISH CONFUSION ON BETH DIN FOOD LABEL A Jewish British Airways passenger was left “dismayed” after finding shellfish listed in the ingredients in his Beth Din-certified kosher meal on a flight from Tokyo.

Dennis Krushner, who designed the UK’s first telephone interviewing software for microcomputers in the 1980s, complained to British Airways (BA) about the meal, which was sourced in Lyon and bore a kosher certificate from the Lyon Beth Din. A certificate included with Krushner’s mediterranean salmon meal said it contained fish stock, two ingredients of which were shellfish and mollusc.

Hundreds of papers, articles and cookbooks by the legendary Jewish food writer, Evelyn Rose, are to be presented to the Guildhall archive by her family, writes Jenni Frazer.

As her daughter, Judi – herself a distinguished food writer – explains: “My mother kept everything, all her pamphlets, recipes, columns, travel writing, and, of course, all her cookbooks”. After her mother died in 2003, and again after her father Myer Rose’s death, Judi looked at the huge collection and wondered what to do with it.

“I heard from someone in the Guild of Food Writers that the Guildhall Library had accepted the papers of Elizabeth David and Andre Simon, the wine writer. I went to meet the librarian and found that the Guildhall

Library was building up a nice collection of food and wine writings, which are open to the public for research after they have been catalogued.”

The family decided to donate Rose’s work, which includes material from the 1940s and 1950s, beginning with a “healthy eating” pamphlet for Family Doctor magazine.

Rose, awarded an MBE in 1989 for her food writing, was the resident cook for Granada TV in the 1970s and was the author of more than 12 cookbooks, several of which have become the mainstay of many AngloJewish kitchens.

Among the material donated will be videos of her TV demonstrations, and papers relating to time she spent in Israel.

Prince Charles was among the partygoers as the Royal Albert Hall played host to the UK’s biggest celebration for Israel’s 70th birthday, writes Justin Cohen.

Nearly 2,500 revellers descended on the iconic London venue for the Platinum event, where musicians and dancers representing Israel’s diverse cultural scene took centre stage.

Compered by TV judge Rob Rinder, the event was organised by the Jewish Leadership Council, UJIA and Israel Bonds, taking on a concept from the United Synagogue’s Alan Aziz.

The party kicked off with a dance performance by a group of British Jews aged eight to 80, before the prince entered to the anthems of Britain and Israel, taking his place in the Royal box alongside Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Israeli Ambassador to the UK Mark Regev.

Cabinet Minister David Lidington, who

represented the government, hailed modernday Israel as a “global leader” in upholding the rights of women and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities, as well as a tech superpower and a key provider of aid to foreign disaster zones.

“Israel’s story has the belief in miracles at its heart,” he told the audience, drawing on the words of the country’s first prime minister David Ben Gurion. The Balfour Declaration, he said, provided the hope that the dream of a “land to call home” might become a reality. The Palestinians too deserve a home, he added.

And while Britain would always defend the Jewish state’s “right and obligation” to defend itself, the minister stressed the need for reconciliation with all her neighbours and insisted the UK would not shy away from asking tough questions when needed.

Hailing Anglo-Jewry as “one of the most dynamic communities”, Lidington said “it is frankly shaming our country is having to learn the lesson” on fighting anti-Semitism today”.

UJIA chair Louise Jacobs earlier kicked off proceedings, promising revellers the event would reflect the fact that Israel has produced a “wealth of artists from across the diverse communities”. Headliners Balkan Beat Box has the audience on their feet with their signature mix of world music, jazz and electronica, and were joined by A-WA and Gili Yalo.

POLL: 23% OF BRITS DO NOT WANT A JEW IN THE FAMILY Almost one in four Brits would not accept a Jew as a member of their family, according to a new poll conducted by the prestigious Pew Research Center.

The report ‘Being Christian in Western Europe,’ published this week, contains results from interviews with 24,000 randomlyselected adults in 15 European countries, including the UK. Asked whether they would accept Jews as members of their family, Brits were the second least tolerant, with 23 percent saying they wouldn’t. In Italy, 25 percent said ‘no Jews,’ whereas only three percent of Dutch or Norwegians saw it as a problem.

In Germany, 19 percent said they would not accept a Jewish relative, and in Austria, nonacceptance was at 21 percent.

The mostly Catholic nations of Spain, Portugal and Ireland also had high non-acceptance levels at 13, 18 and 18 percent, respectively.

However, in every country, far more respondents said they would be unwilling to tolerate a Muslim member of the family.

Prince William will arrive in Tel Aviv on 25 June for the first official Royal visit to Israel, it has been announced.

The second in line to the throne (pictured) will arrive in Jordan a day earlier at the start of a five-day tour of the Middle East.

The 26 June will be spent in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, as will the next day when Ramallah will also be added to the schedule. The trip will conclude in Jerusalem on 28 June.

Following the announcement, Simon Johnson, CEO of the Jewish Leadership Council, said: “The pro-

gramme for the Duke of Cambridge’s visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories sounds fascinating.

His Royal Highness will enjoy experiencing the beauty, vibrancy and history of t h e

region. I am sure the duke will enjoy engaging with lots of people from a range of age groups in Israel.”

Board of Deputies President Jonathan Arkush and President-Elect Marie van der Zyl said: “This is something we have been calling for, for a long time. Bloggers named some individuals within the group as Israel tour leaders for RSYNetzer, prompting this week’s comment from Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Reform chair Geoffrey Marx, and Rabbi Josh Levy, the chair of the Assembly of Reform Rabbis and Cantors.

Acknowledging that “many of our members were disturbed by” the group saying Kaddish at Parliament Square, they said: “As leaders of Reform Judaism, we deliberately chose not to

attend. No one attended this event in any capacity whatsoever as representing Reform Judaism or RSY-Netzer.”

The trio added: “When RSYNetzer discovered that most of those killed in Gaza were claimed as Hamas operatives, they acknowledged that had they known, they would not have shared this on Facebook.”

Among those associated with RSY-Netzer to attend was Nina Morris-Evans, who said: “By Jewishly mourning the lives lost, we were not condoning terrorism, Hamas or violence of any form. Rather,

we were facing up to the ugly reality of what the occupation results in time and time again.”

Janner-Klausner spoke scathingly last week about the manner in which bloggers personally identified young Jews online, prompting direct abuse and harassment.

Liberal Judaism’s Rabbi CharleyBaginsky wrote:“While I would not have participated in this event and know many of our members are disturbed by the actions of this group, I refuse to be drawn into the violent abuse levelled at those who did participate.”

The Board of Deputies’ outgoing president Jonathan Arkush has said the Jewish community will raise the issue of impartiality of members of Ken Livingstone’s original disciplinary hearing when they next meet Labour leaders.

Arkush was reacting to new details released by LBC radio – which obtained the leaked transcript of the former mayor’s hearing two years ago – in which Palestine campaigner Russell Cartwright was revealed as a panel member.

“That’s why we asked for the process to have an

independent ombudsman to not interfere, except where we felt there was a problem,” said Arkush, who met Labour’s new generalsecretary Jennie Formby last month.

“One of the problems would obviously be where someone who is a judge at one of these tribunals is not an independent person with a genuinely independent view to bear.”

LEAKED REPORT REVEALS PLAN TO TACKLE JEW HATE A leaked document from Labour’s top internal body has revealed how the party plans to get on top of an anti-Semitism crisis that caused its support amid Jewish populations to plummet in local elections last month.

The report for the National Executive Committee (NEC), leaked to HuffPost UK, backs anonymised complaints, strict deadlines for cases and the set-up of “specific threemember panels to deal with anti-Semitism”.

When a case is deemed serious, a hearing is scheduled in front of members of the National Constitutional Committee (NCC).

In January, a dedicated staff member was employed to compile hearing bundles

“to deal with the backlog”, and in April a “team of lawyers” was drafted in to help.

However, the report’s authors note that “NCC cases are delayed because they have taken on a litigious nature, meaning that respondents sometimes invest in extensive legal representation and take out court injunctions to delay cases to provide maximum time for solicitors to prepare cases”.

They also suggest that the name of anyone accused of anti-Semitism be removed from investigations and reports being considered by the NEC disputes panel, in the same way that the names of those accused of sexual harassment are redacted.

The authors cite concerns that cases are not being dealt

with in a consistent manner “due to political forces influencing decisions”.

The six-page document, marked ‘confidential’, lists a series of concerns about the way Labour processes allegations of anti-Semitism, ranging from timeliness to transparency, but notes that there is still no in-house counsel, a recommendation made by Baroness Chakrabarti two years ago.

Among the 13 recommendations the report makes are process-driven improvements such as ‘service level agreements’ on the length of time each stage of the disciplinary process should take, as well as on training and “decisionmaking matrices” for panels to help ensure fairness.

Swastikas were spray-painted on between 150 and 200 gravestones at a cemetery in Illinois, USA. The Nazi logo was also spraypainted on the homes and garage doors of a nearby home subdivision, according to reports.

A 34-year-old man was arrested in connection with vandalism to the Sunset Hill Cemetery, in Glen Carbon, Illinois, which is non-denominational. There was no common denominator for the gravestones that were vandalised with swastikas. More than 1,300 army veterans are buried in the cemetery. [JTA]

‘Communal leaders do not speak for me’ Stephen Oryszczuk talks to Newham’s new outspoken councillor

L

ike many politically-active Jewish twenty-somethings, Joshua Garfield newly-elected as a Newham councillor, feels ignored and isolated by the community’s leadership. As he bluntly puts it: “The Board of Deputies, under its current leadership and present political stances, does not represent me and in no way speaks for me as a British Jew.” Garfield is just the kind of Jew the Board needs to speak for to stay relevant. Smart, active, funny, politically-engaged, going places and non-judgmental, he is the tanned face of the next Jewish generation. The tan comes from his Greek-Cypriot (non-Jewish) dad.

“Once, in school, a boy asked ‘Miss, was Jesus black or white?’ She said ‘Well he was Jewish, so probably Josh’s colour.’”

He is a joy to speak to over a pint in a Camden pub. Born and raised in Stratford, he had a very Orthodox grandfather, a less Orthodox mother, and goes to Sandy’s Row near Liverpool Street for the high holy days.

He’s thoroughly Labour, just like mum Judith, a councillor in Redbridge, and a signed-up Corbyn fan to boot (“I was on the phone banks

in 2016”), but you can tell he’s annoyed at the time it’s taken for the anti-Semitism penny to drop. Ideologically, he’s to the left of the party, talking about his gripes with Tony Blair and “the neo-liberal agenda”, but he’s no Marxist.

At 23, after two years teaching English in Spain, he’s now at university in London studying politics and international relations, but has already had more jobs and careers than most: retail, call-centre, bartender, drama teacher, Jewish summer camp in the US, now helping vulnerable young people as a youth worker. In between, he’s set up an LGBT group, so he isn’t a sit-at-home type.

Politically, he did his first door-knocking aged 15, when Gordon Brown was PM. Where is he on Israel? “On the current Israeli government, I’m appalled, heartbroken.

It’s not the Israel it should be, or anyone wanted it to be, in the slightest. It obviously has the right to exist and to defend itself, but in recent decades it’s not always been defensive, it’s been offensive and attacking.

The treatment of Palestinians, particularly in the Gaza Strip, has been indefensible. Many Jews share that view.”

On anti-Semitism, he has his issues with the working examples in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition, as others do, saying (as did the Home Affairs Select Committee) it needs tweaking to allow for criticism of Israel. On an individual level, he argues if someone perceives something as anti-Semitic, it should be treated as such, as per the McPherson Report.

If you recognise Garfield’s name, it could be because he made the national press last month when he quit Newham Momentum, alleging “deep-seated prejudices” towards Jews by fellow members. “I have witnessed more antiSemitism in the past week than I ever have in my eight years of Labour Party membership,” he wrote. What did he hear? He won’t be drawn, citing an ongoing investigation.

Where now for Corbyn and Labour, given the delay in implementing change? “There were people in the party who didn’t think it was a very big issue. That’s changed. The leadership wants it rectified, they want to regain the trust of the Jewish community and make it clear they take it seriously.”

“People vote for different reasons, on different issues. I doubt there are many Jews sat at home planning to vote solely on that.

Yes, Jeremy has been critical of these very right-wing Israeli governments who have waged war on often defenceless civilians, but there are many Jewish people have been critical of the same thing.

“So while it is always going to be a problem for some people, what he’s doing is making his position clear, on Israel-Palestine, antiSemitism and other issues, then letting the Jewish community decide whether they want to support the party. I hope they do.”

The dog defender

Clare Hedwat speaks to an inspiring Jewish vet with a lead role in ensuring the nation’s four-legged friends are happy and healthy One of Britain’s best-loved vets is drinking an oat milk flat white in his local coffee shop.

He’s on the phone, explaining to a newspaper columnist how a change in legislation of puppy farming has implications for the rest of the UK. “Scotland really needs this law,” he explains.

I ask Marc Abraham how the latest campaign is going. “As well as it can be,” he shrugs resignedly.

Abraham began his TV career as a resident vet on The Paul O’Grady Show and regularly gives advice on programmes including This Morning and BBC Breakfast. When not on the campaign trail or consulting in his Brighton practice, Abraham volunteers – from rescuing dancing bears in Ukraine to saving cats and dogs in post-tsunami Thailand.

Awarded ‘Vet of the Year’ three times, Abraham is secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group and the author of two books and more than 1,000 articles and blogs on caring for animals.

A rescue pet waits for a new owner

Pup Aid was founded by Abraham nine years ago, originally as a fun dog show to create awareness of the cruelties of puppy farming, creating #wheresmum in 2015 to help the public choose a healthy, happy dog. Although official govern-

ment guidance suggests a puppy should be seen with its mother before it is purchased, using some shops and breeders contravenes this advice. Well-meaning parents purchasing a puppy for a child will have no idea they are bringing a traumatised pet, probably with chronic health issues, into their home.

When Abraham met Lucy in 2016, he was reminded again of the horrors of puppy farming.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel had spent most of her life malnourished, petrified and pregnant in a tiny cage. When she was rescued, Lucy was epileptic and so hunched over from forced breeding she could barely walk, the fate of thousands of dogs forced to breed in appalling conditions.

In December last year, as a tribute to her, ‘Lucy’s Law’ was launched to ban third-party puppy sales by dealers who enable puppy farming to happen behind closed doors. Abraham kicked off the campaign in Parliament, with the support of the Daily Mirror, Downton Abbey actor Peter Egan, campaigners and politicians. #LucysLaw has attracted the support of more than 130 MPs, including Prime Minister Theresa May, who has tweeted in support, and celebrities including Ricky Gervais, Rachel Riley, Dr Brian May and Tracy-Ann Oberman. In February, the government announced a call for evidence and a #LucysLaw government e-petition created in March to show public support hit 100,000 signatories in 13 days and was debated in parliament on Monday.

announcement will follow next month, banning third-party sales, which would force prospective dog owners directly to the breeders, or preferably consider rescue.

He believes this is the first step to stop the cruelty of puppy farms and can’t believe how far the campaign has come. “I was just a geeky Jew from Stanmore who loved to play chess and did extra homework. I never imagined the campaign would take me to Number Ten,” he says.

Growing up attending Edgware Reform synagogue, he cites his Jewish background as a huge influence. “Jews fight for those who can’t represent themselves. A society is measured by how it treats the vulnerable. Animals are part of that.”

Abraham’s grandmother, Judy Benton, sneaked passage into the UK from Dresden in 1938, aged just 17. Tragically, she found out after the war her parents had been murdered in Auschwitz. Abraham says his grandmother is his biggest inspiration, teaching him “anything is possible”.

Abraham sat next to her in the House of Commons during his first 2014 e-petition debate, the same room where parliament debated mobilisation of the Kindertransport to save Jewish children.

Yet #LucysLaw faces stiff opposition.

A prospective change in the law threatens the massive commercial interests of the UK pet industry, whose business models often depend on pets being sold in store. Even some of the UK’s best-loved animal charities have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, Abraham says, effectively keeping puppies in pet shops. But “campaigning is creative. Every time we hit a brick wall, we find a new way”.

What keeps him going? “The end game.”

With sights on changing legislation in the rest of the UK before taking on US law, he is resolute, and “prepared for the long haul”.

So what is his advice on the best way to buy a puppy? “Always go to a rescue centre,” he says.

World News / Israel under fire

180 rockets rain down on Israel from Gaza Strip Israel’s armed forces struck more than 60 Palestinian targets after an estimated 180 rockets rained down on southern Israel from the Gaza Strip this week, the heaviest fighting seen since 2014.

The Israel-bound mortars and missiles, claimed by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), began at 7am on Tuesday and were mainly intercepted by the Iron Dome system, but one landed in the playground of a school nursery.

No one was hurt in that attack.

Smoke rises from the Gaza Strip after Israel conducted strikes on terror targets

Amid a cacophony of sirens throughout the day, another projectile hit an Israeli home in the Eshkol region. Three Israeli soldiers were reported to have sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The salvo, initiated by the PIJ, is believed to be in response to the IDF killing four of its terrorists in strikes a day earlier.

As a tense truce appeared to hold yesterday, reports surfaced in Arab media that Israel, Egypt and Hamas had negotiated a ceasefire deal. Israel denied these reports.

The IDF said it conducted strikes against “terror targets at seven sites belonging to Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, including military compounds, munition storage warehouses, naval targets and terrorist command centres”.

As part of the response, Israeli soldiers said they “neutralised” a terror tunnel that led from Gaza into Egypt then 900 metres into Israel, releasing aerial footage showing the route. It is the tenth tunnel to be destroyed since October.

beach, to be constructed around the 25-mile Strip to “block any possibility of infiltration from Gaza into Israel by sea”.

The US called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council, which it said “should be outraged and respond to this latest bout of violence directed at innocent Israeli civilians”.

It added: “The Palestinian leadership needs to be held accountable for what it is allowing to happen in Gaza.”

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said: “Violent riots along the security fence with Gaza, including IEDs [Improvised Explosive Devices] and the firing of weapons at our security

forces, were not spontaneous protests, but rather part of a coordinated violent attack against the state of Israel. The shells and rockets fired at our citizens leave no doubt to the true intentions of those who incited, encourage, and even paid for those ongoing riots.”

The UN, EU and governments around the world condemned the rocket fire, with a spokesman for the EU’s diplomatic service saying “indiscriminate attacks against civilians are completely unacceptable under any circumstances,” before calling for a “de-escalation of this dangerous situation”.  Editorial comment, page 16

UK BACKS £1.5M GAZA AID The UK this week committed to provide a new package of aid totalling £1.5million to buy medicines and equipment for hospitals in Gaza.

The funding will help treat patients in 11 hospitals and will also provide physical rehabilitation services for around 4,000 people.

The aid announcement comes after Israeli jets bombed targets in Gaza hours after terrorists from the territory fired mortar shells towards communities in southern Israel.

Tensions have been running high in the region following the deaths of more than 100 Palestinians from Israeli fire during mass protests along the border – most of them members of terror groups.

Middle East Minister Alistair Burt, announcing the funding on a visit to Gaza, said: “I am deeply concerned about the worsening situation in the Gaza Strip, and today’s UK aid package gives a message to the world, and to the people of Gaza, that we have not forgotten them or their plight.

“This support will help ensure hospitals, which are under pressure, are able to cope with the increased number of casualties who

need medical and surgical care.

“It is absolutely vital the UK steps up to help those suffering and ensure vulnerable Gazans are able to access treatment to keep them alive.

“We have been clear that a political settlement is the only way to ensure lasting peace for Palestinians and Israelis alike. All parties must redouble their political efforts and return to the negotiating table, not only to address the deteriorating conditions in Gaza, but to ensure tragedies of the past months are not repeated.”

UK support is already providing Gazans with access to clean water, and improving sanitation facilities to help stop the spread of deadly disease.

Through the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA), UK aid is providing basic health and education to 1.3 million people in Gaza, as well as more than 800,000 refugees in the West Bank.

Burt announced in March at the Rome Conference that the UK will deliver its next round of financial support to UNRWA earlier than planned, to help meet the growing needs of Palestinian refugees Alistair Burt across the region.

Roth buried at college The funeral of acclaimed Jewish author Philip Roth was held on Monday with no religious elements, in line with his instructions.

The writer of classics such as Portnoy’s Complaint, American Pastoral and The Human Stain (pictured), was buried at Bard College Cemetery in New York state.

Roth had originally looked into being buried next to his parents at the Gomel Chesed Cemetery in Newark, New Jersey. However, the area surrounding the Jewish burial ground had in recent years

become rife with crime, and Roth was unable to find a plot next to his parents, said his biographer, Blake Bailey.

Instead, Roth decided about 15 years ago to be buried at the Bard College Cemetery, where he could be near his friend

Norman Manea, a RomanianJewish author who works as a professor at the college, Bailey said. Roth was also friends with Bard College president Leon Botstein, who is also Jewish.

“He wanted to be buried near Jews so he has someone to talk to,” Bailey said.

Roth “expressly forbade” any religious rituals from being part of his funeral. “There was no metaphysical dimension to Philip. He just flatly refused to believe in it. He thought it was fairytales,” Bailey said.

Although Roth “was bored out of his mind when he had to

attend Hebrew school as a boy,” he was happy to be Jewish, Bailey told JTA. “He liked Jews as human beings. He liked their warmth, he liked his male friends’ filial piety, which he made a lot of fun of too, in Portnoy’s Complaint especially,” Bailey said, referencing his 1969 novel depicting the therapy sessions of a sexually frustrated Jewish man.

In 1998, Roth won the Jewish Book Council’s Lifetime Literary Achievement Award and in 2014, received an honorary doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Czechs open consulate VLOGGER CRITICISED The Czech Republic has reopened its honorary consulate in Jerusalem.

The consulate opened on Tuesday, a month after Czech President Milos Zeman made the announcement that the consulate would reopen at an event in honour of Israel’s 70th birthday.

Opened in the early 1990s, the Czech honorary consulate in Jerusalem was closed in 2016 due to the death of the honorary consul. The Czech Embassy has been in Tel Aviv since 1949, though it remained closed during the former communist regime in Prague between 1967 and 1990.

A video blogger in Russia who sought to highlight ignorance about the Second World War drew criticism by posting on YouTube street interviews of passersby wishing viewers a “happy Holocaust Day”.

Nijat Safarli conducted the interviews in the city of Cheboksary 400 miles east of Moscow on 9 May, during a

parade celebrating Nazi Germany’s defeat in 1945, which in Russia is noted on that date.

He posted on YouTube snippets from interviews with young people who tell the camera “happy Holocaust day”. Safarli replaced the video with another explaining he wanted to show up ignorance about the genocide.

A video taken on the New York Subway has gone viral after a black woman told a carriage that people would have given up their seats for a Jewish family. Yossi Wolfe, who is Jewish, told her: “Can we please not make this a racist thing?”

Still no end game Just over 100 years ago, in November 1917, the British and Ottomans fought what is known as The Third Battle of Gaza, the first and second battles having taken place months earlier. This small strip, alas, has known as much war as it has peace.

Now, approaching summer 2018, we may be about to see a fourth war in 10 years.

What to do? What would any country do if it were being shot at by terrorists? News this week of rockets fired at Israeli school nurseries tell their own story.

The people of Gaza know what is coming, yet still they fire at Israel. It is as inexplicable as it is cowardly.

But what is the end-game? Surely it cannot be more of the same, to continually quell a restive land with short bursts of devastating destruction?

There must be a plan, and that plan must be to develop the strip in return for demilitarisation, achieved through a series of confidence-building steps.

A people with something to live for don’t endanger their existence.

In the meantime, the British Jewish community stands ready and willing to defend Israel as Israel defends itself.

We hope and pray that nothing starts, and if it does, that it is over quickly.

One of Britain’s leading rabbis this week warned that the Jewish community is on a path to “self-destruction”, following a torrent of abuse aimed at a group that recited Kaddish for Gaza’s dead, writes Adam Decker.

Widespread revulsion greeted news that 50 mainly young British Jews had held a public show of mourning in Westminster, despite knowing that 52 of the 64 victims were Hamas terrorists.

Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner (pictured) said: “Something very disturbing is happening in our community that has the potential for self-harm and damage. In fact, it is already doing damage. It is the abuse that people from all sides – left and right – are getting.”

In recent days, messages of abuse aimed at those who attended the Kaddish have included “You’re

Swallowing nonsense I applaud the statement made by the Board of Deputies, following the Hamas inspired attack on the border fence. It is high time the Board speaks its mind, after many years of sitting on the fence.

What is, however, upsetting are the comments made in your newspaper by ‘left wingers’ and do-gooders who have succumbed to the many years of lies fed to them by Palestinian sympathisers.

While we should all agree that loss of any life is tragic, there is no ‘circle of violence’, and Hamas

clearly stated that it was its objective to break through the barrier and, to quote: “rip out the heart” of Jews!

Israel has every right to protect its citizens and, from independent witness statements, the IDF followed recognised “rules of engagement” in acting in self-defence.

Perhaps these naysayers would like to put themselves at the border fence, rather than to criticise our brothers in our own land.

My father’s passing marks the end of a golden era ALEX BRUMMER CITY EDITOR, DAILY MAIL

T

he last journey of my father Michael Brummer took the cortege past the Hove Hebrew Congregation on Holland Road, which had been such an important part of his life. The doors of the shul has been especially opened along with the gates to the aron kodesh.

As the procession reached the doors in the milky May sunshine, Rabbi Samuel Spitzer miraculously appeared to make the delivery of a cake for the Shabbat Kiddush. He stood on the steps of the synagogue, opened his lungs and recited verses from tillim (psalms).

Passing cars waited reverently, paying a silent tribute to an unknown warrior.

My father Michael lived to 103 years, outlasting all of his generation in the golden era of Hove Jewry when the pews of Holland Road synagogue were packed.

Congregants came to hear the golden voice of Chazan Kalman Fausner, the spluttered and passionate sermons of Rabbi Wilner and

the full throated chants of the Rev Shlomo Josephs. As a longstanding warden and vicepresident there was no more outstanding servant to the community than Michael.

Right up until his 103rd birthday he was in his seat smiling, shaking hands, worrying about the minyan and immersed in prayer.

A complex journey brought my dad to Brighton. He was born in the shadow of the Carpathian mountains on the border between Hungary and Czechoslovakia near the town of Berehove. It was territory which would change hands six times in his lifetime, eventually landing in the Ukraine. At 14 he travelled to Pressburg (Bratislava) where his older brother Hillel was training to be a cantor. My father was a glass merchant’s apprentice but also became part of the Yeshiva community, attracted to the tough intellectual Zionism of Ze’ev Jabotinsky.

From there my father found himself drawn to a pre-Israel naval unit based near Geneo in Italy, where he spent two years training to become an arm of the future Jewish state. In 1938, with conflict widening across Europe, my father and his Zionist

compatriots, in their naval uniforms, sailed to Palestine, with the intention of landing in Haifa. Instead they were turned away by British mandate forces and warning shots were fired. The Zionist sailors returned to Europe in the midst of the Anschluss.

My father made his way across war strewn Europe, back to his birthplace to visit his parents and younger siblings in territory under Hungarian control. He was beaten up at the station by Arrow Cross thugs but made his way to the family home and farm and encouraged his younger brother to escape with him to England, where his older brother Hillel already was established as ChazanMohel at St Annes near Liverpool.

His younger brother was turned back at the Czech border and, like the rest of the family, was caught up in Shoah. My father’s parents were to die at Auschwitz. His younger siblings, through grit and willpower, survived.

My father eventually made it to England as Neville Chamberlain declared war.

It was a blessed escape and he had an early introduction to British tolerance when an unknown lady engaged him in conversation and walked him across London from Victoria to Kings Cross to help him on his way to Liverpool. He settled in Brighton as a farmer, kosher butcher and delicatessen proprietor.

He would meet my mother, from the old established Anglo-Jewish Lyons family, on the steps of Middle Street synagogue.

Few who came into his shop on Waterloo Street knew of the adventures which brought Michael to Brighton. The heyday of Brighton and Hove Jewry is past. My father the link in the golden chain to a new generation on the south coast. The old-established communities are seeking to rebuild shuls and community centres for a new generation.

Michael’s death marks the end of an era.

Labour shows its complicity through silence and inaction PHILIP ROSENBERG

O

ver the past couple of years after intense provocation, I have taken to these pages a couple of times to express my disgust at the standard of behaviour in the Hampstead and Kilburn Constituency Labour Party.

Almost two years ago to the day, I could not believe my local party had blocked Jews even debating a motion about anti-Semitism. As we were not allowed to discuss it there, I was glad Jewish News allowed me to discuss it here.

In February, I wrote I had finally had enough. I had stayed silent not once, not twice, but six times. When Hampstead and Kilburn Constituency Labour Party was faced with an anti-Jewish motion for the seventh time in nine meetings, and passed it, I could stay silent no longer.

Some despairing Jewish members are even suggesting ‘we should wear yellow stars

to meetings because it would make things simpler’ – and they are by no means alone in their horror. I vowed I would not return to these local meetings until the Party could guarantee me and other Jews a ‘safe space’.

My last article got a fair amount of pick up, particularly on social media. I was invited in

by Labour Party headquarters, and then by Jeremy Corbyn’s office. I got a lot of sympathy.

But when I asked for anything approaching concrete action, none came.

Now, it seems that a lack of discernible action from the Labour Party is allowing a group of seriously nasty people to plumb new depths.

At the last meeting, a number of members heckled during the minute’s silence for the recently deceased Labour stalwart Tessa Jowell .

After a vote on Gaza was proposed, and passed, there was an attempt to force those who would not support the motion to identify themselves – expressed in menacing terms.

And we know who that was aimed at, don’t we?

Meanwhile, Brent Council leader Muhammed Butt was also heckled and called a ‘racist’ without any substantiation.

This is apparently what now passes for ‘civil discourse’. It is frequently said – and particularly eloquently by Rabbi Lord Sacks – that while ‘anti-Semitism may start with the Jews, it never ends with the Jews’. How right this has proven in Hampstead and Kilburn. With anti-Jewish actions unchecked, we now see this poison spreading to other spheres.

Robust disagreements are an important part of our politics, but there can be no excuse for heckling a minute’s silence for Tessa Jowell, obsessive targeting of Jews, or motions of censure against our MP Tulip Siddiq for speaking out against anti-Semitism, as we have seen recently. This is not just ‘left wing’ or ‘socialist’ behaviour. It is antisocial and it is

unacceptable.

Corbynite and moderate members alike tell me how dismayed they feel that a small clique continues to hijack meetings. These discussions should be devoted to supporting our MP and councillors to improve the lives of local people, but they are too often a bear pit of needless and egregious incivility.

And yet the response to people who raise the alarm is that somehow we are in the wrong for speaking out on racism. Imagine seeking to silence the victims of any other form of abuse in favour of the perpetrators. It is unconscionable. Ultimately, silence and inaction are complicity. party must step in and take action before things spiral further out of control.

They’re not bad people, just horribly misguided RABBI ANDREW SHAW CHIEF EXECUTIVE, MIZRACHI UK

ast week, Jewish News published seven opinion pieces and articles dealing with the disgraceful acts of 50 or so people from our community saying Kaddish for Hamas terrorists. Most of the articles either defended the event or simply wrongly focused on the fact that some people had reacted to the repugnant scenes with personal attacks and hate speech.

I absolutely condemn attacks on individuals and vile language, but in nearly all of the comments I saw from a wide section of people there was anger, there was rage, there was disbelief – but most of it was absolutely called for and was not in any way hate speech.

I watched the recording of the Kaddish again last week and thought I had heard it all, but another snippet was released a few days ago. It began with the following: “Reading the testimonies of my ancestors trapped in the ghettos of Europe looking at the sky with fear, seeing only walls and hostile soldiers on the horizon,

dependant on their captors for food, water and medical supplies – I cannot help but also think of Gaza.”

Comparing six million Jews who were killed in the Shoah with the Palestinians in Gaza and equating the IDF with the Nazis is not anti-Zionism – it is anti-Semitism at its most vile. Yet people are surprised we did not just smile and move on.

Following the event, the people who attended wrote blogs, not to apologise to the community but to stress how right they were. One of those people, who is leading tour for one of the Zionist youth movements this summer, wrote: “Who these people were – or what group they were affiliated to – is an insignificant issue compared to the reality of their murder.”

There is so much wrong and offensive about that statement, I do not know where to begin. To her the fact that they are murderous terrorists with a genocidal mission against Jewish people is insignificant. I wonder what she would say about the Allied forces who defeated Nazi Germany – murderers all of them!

It’s true that our sages instructed us to not overly celebrate when our enemies die,

but we also do not mourn their deaths. All humans are created B’tselem Elokim (in the image of God). However, it is our obligation as Jews to retain moral clarity. As it says in the Midrash: “Those who are kind to the cruel will end up being cruel to the kind.”

We must be very clear that the attendants are not bad people. They are horrendously misguided and have been poisoned against Israel by an incessant campaign of hate against it from the left, which has made its way in to some of the Zionist movements and is now being taught to our young people. The issue is that the people

at this event were not on the fringe of the community. They are the leaders of some of our Zionist youth movements and are the people responsible for teaching our children about Israel.

What hope do we have when this is the education they will receive this summer?

We must have our red lines. People have to realise that unless there are dramatic changes in some of our Zionist education, we have to question the funding from within the community for these organisations. We do not tolerate extremism such as Neturei Karta. Why should we tolerate it here?

As the anti-Israel voices on the left grow ever louder, we need to make sure that we are educating our young people about the wonder that is the State of Israel.

That is something Mizrachi UK is attempting to achieve across the community. Of course Israel is not perfect, but as one non-Jew on YouTube said: “Israel is “a light unto the nations; an oasis of civilisation in the midst of a desert of savagery; a powerful lighthouse in the darkest corner on earth.”

Now that’s a lesson worth teaching.

DEMENTIA DEVELOPMENT PRACTITIONER, JEWISH CARE

Y

ou could be forgiven for thinking dementia had just emerged.

We have seen daily headlines, from prevention techniques to the importance of diagnosis, and a huge increase in people living with dementia talking openly about its impact.

The truth is it has been around forever. The change is that its affecting significantly more people than ever before and it’s no longer happening behind closed doors.

Four years ago, Jewish Care launched a dementia awareness campaign with Jewish News. Our objectives were to create a movement of informed individuals and communal organisations committed to responding to the needs of the increasing numbers of people living with dementia in our community.

Alzheimer’s Society had just launched its dementia friends programme. As supporters of the programme we decided this was the obvious vehicle for us to get the momentum

going across the community.

We’ve just marked Dementia Awareness Week, an apt time to reflect on how we, the Jewish community, is responding to the dementia challenge. So, the good news first: More than 500 individuals from the community have taken part in training and become ‘dementia friends’. They have committed to understanding more about dementia and the small things they can do to support people in their communities living with it.

Some synagogues are recognising the role they can play in making a difference and are, with support for Jewish Care, establishing specialist groups.

As a dementia trainer and practitioner, I have been encouraged by some conversations I have had. One rabbi told me that after attending the dementia friends session, she went to visit a woman whose husband had passed away to discuss the funeral. On her arrival, the woman apologised, saying her husband was out and would be back from the shops soon. The rabbi remembered the advice in the training to “Step into the world of the person living with

dementia”, listened and then after leaving, contacted another family member to discuss the funeral plans. Other people have told me about the small changes they have made in their synagogue to support people living with dementia.

Last month, Jewish Care’s pastoral and spiritual leader, Rabbi Menachem Junik, spoke alongside leaders from the Sikh and Quaker communities at the first national conference on faith, culture and dementia, hosted by Alzheimer’s Society.

Their common message was the need for communities to work together, sharing ideas while calling on other faith leaders to recognise the role they can play in supporting members of

their community who are living with dementia.

Dementia attacks short-term memory before taking its toll on longer-term memory.

Regular lifelong traditions are often those ‘hard wired’ into you, so deep within you that they last beyond so many other memories. Religion can play a major role in their well-being but this doesn’t need to be ‘religious’ activity.

Many of the people we support don’t see themselves as religious but do feel Jewish and have connections with the community.

Everyone has their own dementia journey.

But sadly, what we often hear is how the world of someone living with dementia and their carer (if they have one) shrinks. We could be failing people when they most need us.

The only way we can change this is through increased awareness and positive action.

Seed hosted the first Jewish Art Fair at its centre in Edgware.

The 38 artists who exhibited their work donated 25 percent of their profits, which will be split between Seed and event organisers Arts Therapies for Children – a charity that provides 10 Jewish primary schools with qualified and arts therapists to help children with emotional or behavioural difficulties. While no longer limited to Scotland, or even Ireland, it was these two countries that brought the word “whisky” to the world from their Gaelic language.

The prestigious show has assembled a wideranging collection of more than 150 different whiskies from around the globe and will offer a host of exclusive tasting experiences, all part of a fascinating immersion into the diverse whisky culture of today.

Setting off the tastings will be a lavish kosher buffet from Wembley-based firm, Catering by Ezri, promising “home-style cooking with flair and flavour” .

The array to be featured ranges from top labels, including Glendronach, Glenlivet and The Macallan to international distilleries that have also made a mark, such as the pace-setting Japanese company Suntory and the awardwinning Penderyn operation in Wales.

Guests will also have an opportunity to taste the Diageo organisation’s 2017 Special Releases, which are being exhibited exclusively at the event.

As well as the tastings, ranging from elegant classics to the newer arrivals, and selection of food at the buffet, other features include a complimentary cocktail of the guest’s choice from a cocktail bar specialising in new flavours to be experimented with and experienced.

Visitors will also be offered a virtual-reality tour of the Glenfiddich distillery.

All whiskies will be available to buy from The Whisky World shop at the event or can be bought at any time from its online shop.

The Whisky World has also invited a host of senior brand ambassadors from some of the world’s top distilleries, who will be on hand to offer their extensive international knowledge and advice.

Their presence will give visitors added depth to the interactive tasting sessions and food pairings for what the organisers say is “an experience like no other”.

An idea of the diverse nature of the whisky industry can be gleaned from the story of one of the newest independent players on the scene, the GlenAllachie Distillers Company.

It was set up last year by three directors, Billy Walker, Graham Stevenson and Trisha Savage, with the idea of launching a range of premium quality, yet affordable whiskies aimed at boutique retailers in domestic and export markets.

With almost 100 years of experience in the Scotch whisky industry, the team has also bought MacNair’s and White Heather, a pair of blended Scotch whisky brands, which it plans to rejuvenate, with bottlings at various age ranges.

Among the innovations on show at The Whisky Event, they will be launching a 100 percent richly-peaty malt blended whisky with 21-year,12-year and non-age expressions.

GlenAllachie is among the many brands looking forward to the show as a way of spreading the word about how the industry is developing, with room for independents, as well as the multi-nationals.

“We like talking to the customers that we are trying to serve,” adds Walker. “There is life in the independent sector.”

Pointing out that blended whisky is 90 percent of the total product, he adds: “The big players are very helpful, but they do recognise the importance of having a strong independent sector, which might be able to be a little but more creative with flavours and ageing.”

The brands exhibiting at The Whisky Event give some idea of the breadth and scope of the industry today.

They include Aberlour, Ardbeg, Bain’s, Balvenie, Benriach, Boondocks, Bowmore, Bunnhabhain, Dalmore, Deanston, Diaegeo Special Releases 2017, Elijah Craig, Evan Williams, and Flora & Fauna.

Also on hand will be GlenAllachie, Glendronach, Glenfiddich, Glenglassaugh, Glengoyne, Glenmorangie, Glenrothes, Gordon & MacPhail, Highland Park, Jura, Kilkerran, Laphroaig, Ledaig, Longrow, and Macallan, while rounding off the list are Monkey Shoulder, Mortlach, Penderyn, Smokehead, Springbank, Suntory, Talisker, Tamdhu, Teeling and Yamazaki.

It’s never too late to make a change Louisa Walters meets five women who successfully switched career

T

he “change” is something that happens to women of a certain age – but some women decide to make more far-reaching changes in other areas of their life, especially when it comes to their careers.

Having made the leap from being a freelance journalist for 25 years to launching my own bridal website aged 43, and four years later creating a restaurant loyalty scheme, I was keen to talk to other women who have embraced a different direction later in life.

Company lawyer to consultant ANDREA COHEN is a lawyer

who spent many years working for a large firm in risk and compliance. Five years ago, feeling a little unsure about her future at the company, she took the plunge and set up her own risk and compliance consultancy.

“It was exciting and scary at the same time,” she says. “I was 50 and Andrea Cohen suddenly I was having to do advocacy work and court appearances again, which I hadn’t done for years, as previously I had a team of assistants and barristers to call upon. I was totally outside of my comfort zone, but I realised that you’re never too old to learn.”

Andrea found that she loves the flexibility of working for herself, and the self-satisfaction of knowing that her clients believe in her enough to give their business to her as an independent.

When she was approached recently by another law firm to work in its risk and compliance department, she was initially reluctant.

But the company offered Andrea agile working, meaning that she can work from home three days a week.

All Andrea’s clients have come with her to the new firm, and she once again has the support of a team and the resources of the company.

Researcher to drama school owner All smiles: Sandra Hale has embraced comedy

Actress to stand-up comedian SANDRA HALE enjoyed a long career as an actress in TV dramas and commercials. “When the work dried up, my sister tried to persuade me to turn to comedy,” she says. “I was really reticent. In acting, you hide behind a character, you are given a script, you have a director and a producer – but in stand-up comedy you’re on your own. I still needed to scratch the performance itch, and then on Groupon I found a one-day course for £30. It wasn’t much good, but Trevor Lock was the headline act and he inspired me.

“I went on to do a weekend course and then, aged 60, I did my first gig.”

The adrenaline kicked in, the punters laughed, and since 2013, Sandra has performed all over the country, including at the Edinburgh Fringe.

She has also written a book. Self Helpless is the antithesis of the self-help book.

Before she had children, Vanessa Bergman worked at Lloyds of London doing research in airline aviation underwriting. When the children were little, she worked locally in an admin role and then in the office at a theatre school in Enfield. When one of the teachers was unable to come in one day, her boss asked her to cover.

“I was really reluctant, but he said, ‘I know you can do this’ and he was right. The teacher never came back, and I stepped seamlessly into the role.”

Over the eight years, she worked there, the school had opened more branches. The founder could not manage them all, so he started franchising them and Vanessa bought one in Southgate, where she lives. She was 47.

“By this time, my kids were grown up and I was running the school in Enfield, so I knew exactly what I was doing,” she explains. “I spent a lot of time out on the streets promoting the new school in Southgate; word spread and now I have a thriving business.

There are three age groups, and it runs every Thursday, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

We also run summer camps and put on shows.”

Secretary and therapist to B&B owner Personal trainer to fashion entrepreneur CAROLINE FREEDMAN-BROWER has been a personal trainer for 21 years.

She has built up a loyal clientele and this, together with her background in fashion styling for television, led to her being asked to help out at a charity fashion show a couple of years ago.

“The models were ordinary women, and many of them were self-conscious about the length of the tops they were asked to wear,” Caroline told me. “They didn’t want their stomachs to show and so they were all reaching for vests to wear underneath their tops, but the straps were unsightly and ruined the look.”

Caroline saw that there was a gap to fill – literally – and set about designing something to fill it. At the age of 50, she launched a revolutionary product. LINDA MARTIN used to work as a secretarial executive for a chemical process engineering company. She gave up her job to raise her children and retrained as a remedial therapist in her late 40s after she was sadly widowed. “When my husband was alive, we used to go to the Sound of Mull in Scotland twice a year for salmon and trout fishing,” she told me. “It’s a beautiful, rural area with wildlife galore and I decided that I wanted to retire there.”

In 2011, she bought a plot of land and lived in a caravan onsite while building her dream house, Willow Brae. It has a double kitchen for milk and meat and another small one for Passover.

Not long after she’d moved in, a neighbour asked if she could put up his friends for a couple of nights. Linda found she rather enjoyed offering hospitality and, despite being in her 60s, decided to open up her house as possibly the only kosher B&B in Scotland.

“Non-Jewish guests have to accept that I won’t cook a full English breakfast, but I do make some rather delicious fishy delights!” she says.

The only Jew on the island He’s got the moves, he’s got the looks – and now Eyal Booker hopes to bring a touch of kosher romance to ITV2’s new series of Love Island Island, which hits our screens next Monday.

Eyal, 22, from Bushey, Hertfordshire, is a former JFS pupil and studied part-time at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, before later joining a pop band, EverYoung, from 2011 to 2015.

Today, Eyal is a model signed to Full Circle Management and based in Cape Town. His Instagram snaps have earned him an impressive 55,000 followers.

Here Eyal, whose mum is Israeli, gives the lowdown on becoming one of this year’s 11 Love Island contestants.

How important will friendship be to you on the show?

Friendship comes with time and is a huge thing to me. I don’t think you can really establish a friendship from the get go but I’d like to make some great guy friends in the villa. I would preferably not like to go against them, but at the end of the day this is about finding love.

Have you got any worries ahead of going into the villa?

Not really. I’m a bit nervous but I think anyone would be! My parents, my sister and my gran might see something that they don’t necessarily want to see. Besides that, I’m excited.

Have you got any claims to fame?

Not really. I was in a pop band once called EverYoung. We had small-time success and toured the country, built up a little fan base and there was fan girl hysteria. They’d follow us around and come to our gigs and stuff so that was a little taste.

What are your thoughts on cheating?

My thoughts on cheating are that it’s not really okay, but when you’re young and finding out about life and your relationships might not mean as much as when you’re older. As long as you’re honest and stay true to yourself then I think everyone deserves a second chance.

If a Love Islander could woo you, what is the best way to your heart?

By captivating me and enticing me with both their mind and what they look like and being a great person who has good morals and values and wants to have a lot of life experiences, as opposed to materialistic things. My ideal date would be going for a nice dinner, sitting

and talking and finding out about this person. Family is a big thing for me so I’d want to know about them, their family, what they stand for, what they like to do and hopefully find a connection through conversation.

What do you find the biggest turn off in a girl?

I try and be a gentleman and I always try and do the gentlemanly things, but I like it to be acknowledged because I think that shows a respectful person.

What has been the most disastrous date you’ve ever been on?

I’ve been on some Tinder dates that have been pretty awful because the girls’ picture wouldn’t really show the girl and then you wouldn’t have anything in common because you didn’t meet naturally through life itself so it can be a bit awkward.

What makes you stand out from everyone else?

I have a fun energy and I am a spiritual person. I’d like to think I have a depth to me so I guess that stands out and I look at things quite deeply.

What are you looking for in the villa?

I’m looking for love! I have had a few relationships, none have lasted that long and now I’m at a point where I’d actually like to find one that can last.

What are your best attributes?

We can’t ignore the fact I have curly hair and people seem to like that. I train pretty hard so I’ve got a decent body. Hopefully I’m just a funny person that people like.

Any bad habits or things people might find less likeable about you?

I think that people might assume that I’m trying to preach but I’m not a preacher and I don’t want to be a preacher I just feel like I’ve got an opinion and I feel like my opinion matters and I’m going to share that with people.

Tell us about your relationship history…

I’ve had quite a few exes in my time, there’s been a mixture of flings from a couple of weeks to six to eight months. I try to stay away from one night stands. I’d like to think they’d all speak highly of me because we all, bar a few, ended on good terms.  Love Island starts June 4 on ITV2 at 9pm

Gal says no to Israel’s Eurovision host invite Israeli actress Gal Gadot has turned down an offer to host the Eurovision Song Contest next year in Israel.

Her agency said she could not host the contest after an invitation to do so by Israel’s Kan network due to a scheduling conflict, Ynet reported.

“Gal would be happy to host and take part in the Eurovision, but unfortunately, schedule constraints and previous commitments do not permit it,” her agency, the ADD Content Agency, said in a statement.

Gadot was a big supporter of the winner, Netta Barlizai, calling on her tens of thousands of social media followers to vote for the Israeli singer, and posting her congratulations when the contest ended.

The country of the winning song becomes the next year’s host.

The sequel to Gadot’s break-out hit Wonder Woman is due to be released next year. Wonder Woman gets a shout-out in the winning song, Toy. Minutes after Toy was announced as the winning

song, Israeli officials and Barzilai herself said the contest would be held in Jerusalem. Several countries reportedly have already said they would boycott a Eurovision held in Jerusalem, while Irish activists have called to boycott the contest if it is held anywhere in Israel.

Eurovision in a tweet warned followers of the official Eurovision Twitter account not to book flights to Israel “just yet” and instead “keep an eye out for announcements on our official channels,” leading to speculation of tension over the venue of the decades-old contest which now has been won by Israel four times, and held in Jerusalem twice.

Meanwhile, Toy has broken a Eurovision record by attracting the most views ever on the song competition’s YouTube channel, with over 58 million views.

The video was most popular in Spain, Germany and Russia, which together made up 30 percent of all viewings, according to the official Eurovision website.

Moving the US embassy to Jerusalem

God consoled him by assigning him the treasured task of kindling the lights of the Menorah, and assured him that this contribution was even more significant than the offerings of the tribes.

What was so special about lighting the menorah?

The Sforno explains beautifully that the three branches on the menorah’s right side represent those whose primary involvement is in the spiritual realm.

The three branches on the left represent those who involve themselves in the materialistic realm, in order to aid those involved in purely spiritual matters.

All six wicks pointed inwards towards the main column of the menorah, which rose straight up towards heaven, signifying the importance of the varied paths being dedicated towards serving God. The first foreign ambassador to Jerusalem on record is Ebed Melech the Kushite, Nubian ambassador to Judea, who saved the prophet Jeremiah’s life by extending diplomatic immunity to him.

Jerusalem is the ultimate place of peace for the Jewish people. The Psalmist sees the hills surrounding Jerusalem as an imagery of God’s protection of His people.

“Just as hills surround Jerusalem, so does God surround his people”. Isaiah states: “All who are in Jerusalem are written in for life.” Biblical commentators view these words as a promise that, ultimately, Jerusalem is the safest place for Jews.

Despite the misery and bloodbaths inflicted throughout the ages by Romans, Crusaders and other invaders, the city is home to the Jewish people.

The Bible Says What? Progressively Speaking Jewish views on tighter gambling regulations

‘Women will eat their own babies’

BY RABBI PETE TOBIAS The Torah contains some sections deemed too unpleasant to be read aloud to a vulnerable, sensitive audience.

Chapter 28 of the book of Deuteronomy is one such section. When this chapter is reached in the annual cycle of Torah readings, it is done so quickly, without interruption and in an undertone.

And it is pretty horrible. It begins with a common biblical statement: “This is what will happen if you listen to the voice of the Eternal your God…” Following a list of blessings that will come if the Israelites observe God’s teachings, there are 50 verses of the most horrendous curses that will follow if they do not. These include people being inflicted with festering sores and tumours, madness, blindness and confusion of mind.

The most horrific section is when the people are told that a nation will come from the north and besiege their cities.

The inhabitants will starve. Such will be their hunger that they will be forced to

eat their own babies.

No wonder this section is read in an undertone. But what is something so unpleasant doing in our holy scripture?

The answer lies in recognising for whom this section of Deuteronomy was written. Its target audience was exiles from Judah, who had recently been brought to Babylon by their captors.

The Babylonians were the enemy from the north who besieged the cities of Judah – specifically Jerusalem – starving those who lived there.

Deuteronomy 28 – indeed the whole of Deuteronomy – was intended to explain to those in exile that they were there because they had not obeyed God’s instructions. When they heard the consequences of not listening to God’s voice, Judah’s exiles understood why they had been taken from their land.

Well-considered, tighter regulation of gambling surely fulfils the noble vision of the biblical prophets and should be supported by all Jews. The topic straddles different issues.

Judaism traditionally has taken a rather negative view of gambling.

The Mishnah rules that dice players and pigeon racers were individuals prohibited from being witnesses.

In the rabbinic mind, someone who gambled was liable to lie about monetary matters and made little useful contribution to society. There was also a view that gambling was akin to theft as no one plays to lose.

Now, the question is how society should regulate gambling to allow individuals to make choices freely while protecting the vulnerable.

We must address the issues of addiction, of the disproportionate effects of fixed odd betting terminals on the poorest people and the wider issue of betting companies being focused on profit.

Regulating things such as fixed odd betting terminals is in the interest of all in society, from the left and right on the political spectrum.

According to studies, they disproportionately affect those with gambling problems and those struggling most financially. The only people with an interest in keeping regulation at bay are bookmakers.

While any job losses will certainly be devastating, the overall impact on the well-being of society is clear.

Jewish tradition is passionately supportive of individual choice and responsibility. However, as progressive Jews, a just society involves

maintaining our individual freedoms while protecting the most vulnerable from exploitation.

At West London Synagogue, our social action work brings us into direct contact with socioeconomic deprivation. Poverty has a direct link with physical and mental well-being, access to education, vulnerability to exploitation, housing and so on.

David Dear David Yours is an increasingly common situation as more people buy property overseas. It is always advisable to check with a local lawyer. Some countries will require a local will, others will accept the provisions of a foreign will.

There are jurisdictions with inheritance rules governing the division of local assets including, in some cases, ‘forced heirship’ provisions so do check thoroughly with a local lawyer.

The general rule is that inheritance rules for immovable assets follow the law of the land in which they stand.

Dear Juliet I’m sorry to hear your mother has been diagnosed with melanoma and I wish her the best of health.

Melanoma is partly due to genetic factors, but not entirely – your lifestyle also has an impact on this.

Risk factors for melanoma include: sun exposure, family history, how easy your skin burns and having many moles.

Please do not be alarmed by any of these factors, as patients with melanoma tend to do very well if picked up early enough.

We now have a tool called a dermatoscope to help us pick up melanoma earlier.

A dermatoscope is a handheld device that lets you see structures in the skin that you’re unable to see with the naked eye.

Any will you make abroad must ensure that it coexists with your English one, and applies only to your assets in Portugal. It is essential you make your foreign lawyer aware of your English will and, if possible, tell them the date of the will.

Wills in most places begin with a statement revoking all previous wills you have made. So, if you are not careful, or if the lawyer doesn’t know about your English will, a foreign will could revoke your English one. creating more problems than it solves.

Early melanoma has certain structures that can be seen using the dermatoscope and help identify it earlier.

Dermoscopy also helps pick up other types of skin cancer.

It is worth having a full skin check as many skin cancers are picked up this way by dermatologists.

The most important way to prevent melanoma is sun protection. Don’t let yourself burn, never use sunbeds and protect your skin with clothes and broad spectrum sunscreen when exposed to sunlight. In an ideal world, you would also have an annual professional skin check with dermoscopy.

There are many steps you are able to take to reduce your chance of developing melanoma and also picking it up at an earlier stage.

HPS Dear Howard I’m having a new combi boiler installed that will be running seven radiators and hot water in our three-bedroom house.

The radiators have been in place for about 15 years. My installer is saying I need two zones, one for upstairs and one for downstairs, plus new radiators and valves. He

said you can just leave the room stat on maximum for the upstairs one so it will be controlled by the programmer downstairs, and I said this seems a bit of a waste of time. However, he said the regulations state he must cable for two zones. The property is about 100sqm; as far as I can tell I don’t need two zones. Please let me know your thoughts.

Jacob Dear Jacob Your installer is out of date with Part L of the building regulations. This would have been correct a couple of years ago but in the

last few years, things have changed.

There is now no requirement for two heating zones for under 150sqm of total floor area.

For a total floor area of more than 150sqm, it does still require two heating zones.

Regarding the radiators, I agree they need to be changed with new valves.

If you decide not to replace them, I’d strongly suggest you have a power flush that would remove all the sludge build-up. In my opinion, change all the radiators and valves.

CHARITY Eight World Jewish Relief supporters tackled 10km of mud, water, woodland and open fields when they took part in the Spring Wolf Run in East Sussex.

Mireille Flores, David Hannuna, Haim Nuriel, Mark Weegmann, Amy Williams, and Natalya Williams took on the course, alongside personal trainers, Karina Kaufmann and Simon Marks. Natalya, WJR’s home relief programme manager, was one of three staff members who took part.

She said: “Everyone in the group felt a huge sense of achievement. The three of us work together every day but this taught us so much about each other and helped us to bond in a way you can’t do in the office.”

Paul Anticoni, WJR chief executive, said: “Thank you to all our runners who achieved a remarkable feat despite the mud and cold and whose efforts will make such a difference to the people we support through our work.”

Oliver’s capital effort for charity RUNNING Dad-of-three Oliver Sanders embarked on a 123km Ultra-Run around London as he raised money for both GIFT and Crisis. He said: “Moving on from triathlons and long distance cycle rides, I thought I’d mark the end of my fifth decade with this run. I could have travelled somewhere exotic to attempt this feat, but instead, thought

I’d run around our own iconic city, following London’s Capital Ring in aid of these two amazing charities – providing food & basics for those in need.” Leaving Hendon Park at 4.45am, his route saw him pass Richmond Park, Balham Station, Eltham Palace, Woolwich foot tunnel, Highgate Station and Shepherds Hill, before arriving back at Hendon Park at 9.30pm that evening.

Four Year 9 pupils completed their Three Peak Challenge after scaling England’s tallest peak – Scafell Pike. Yavneh students Abe Yantin, Malakai Shaffer and Jonah Horne, together with Ben Goodkind, who goes to Highgate School, have raised £22,000 for a number of charities over the past two years. Abe said: “We’re really pleased with our efforts, we’d love to keep the challenges going and plan to do Kilimanjaro in a couple of years – just maybe not with our dads!” Jonah said: “We raised another £7,000 which will go towards research in preventing Strep B and Parkinson’s, which my grandfather suffers from.”

Father and son’s European adventure CYCLING Laurence Smith will be taking his disabled son on a cycling challenge across Europe to raise money for Norwood. Jeremy, 26, who lives at Norwood’s Woodcock Dell residence, has cerebral palsy, scoliosis, epilepsy and profound learning disability, and will ride a specially-adapted bike for the Norwood Central Europe Cycling Challenge. The pair will cycle more than 150 miles across Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and Hungary, with Laurence saying: “I’m doing this for a number of reasons including raising funds for Norwood and out of a determination that Jeremy isn’t deprived of anything that his able-bodied peers can do.
