Today, Britain’s three leading Jewish newspapers – Jewish News, Jewish Chronicle and Jewish Telegraph – take the unprecedented step of speaking as one by publishing the same front page. We do so because of the existential threat to Jewish life in this country that would be posed by a Jeremy Corbyn-led government. We do so because the party that was, until recently, the natural home for our community, has seen its values and integrity eroded by Corbynite contempt for Jews and Israel. The stain and shame of anti-Semitism has coursed through Her Majesty’s Opposition since Jeremy Corbyn became leader in 2015. From Chakrabarti to Livingstone, there have been many alarming lows. to Israel been approved, hundreds, if not thousands, of Labour and Momentum members would need to be expelled. With the government in Brexit disarray, there is a clear and present danger that a man with a default blindness to the Jewish community’s fears, a man who has a problem seeing that hateful rhetoric aimed at Israel can easily step into anti-Semitism, could be our next prime minister. On 5 September, Labour MPs vote on an emergency motion, calling for the party to adopt the full IHRA definition into its rulebook. Following that, it will face a binary choice: implement IHRA in full or be seen by all decent people as an institutionally racist, anti-Semitic party. After three deeply painful years for our community, September is finally make or break.

Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism, provoking Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge to call her leader an anti-Semite to his face, was the most sinister yet. Labour has diluted the IHRA definition, accepted in full by the government and more than 130 local councils, deleting and amending four key examples of anti-Semitism relating to Israel. Under its adapted guidelines, a Labour Party member is free to claim Israel’s existence is a racist endeavour and compare Israeli policies to those of Nazi Germany, unless “intent” – whatever that means – can be proved. “Dirty Jew” is wrong, “Zionist bitch” fair game? In so doing, Labour makes a distinction between racial anti-Semitism targeting Jews (unacceptable) and political antiSemitism targeting Israel (acceptable). The reason for this move? Had the full IHRA definition with examples relating

Jewish News 2 August 2018

News / Labour anti-Semitism NEWS IN BRIEF

RABBI RICH: LABOUR STILL SAFE FOR JEWS Liberal Judaism’s chief executive Rabbi Danny Rich has said he still stands by the idea that the Labour Party is a safe space for Jews – for now. Appearing on BBC’s Newsnight, Rich was speaking as a serving Labour councillor in Barnet. Asked if the saga made Rich question whether Jews had a home in the party, he said: “Not yet. The party seems to be the only alternative government, and most members are not anti-Semitic.”

AUSTIN PROBE IS RIDICULOUS, SAY MPS Labour politicians have condemned as “ridiculous” a probe into fellow MP Ian Austin after he clashed with the party chairman over its new code on anti-Semitism. Austin, the Dudley North MP and the adopted son of Jewish refugees, received a letter similar to that sent to fellow Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge from the party a day later, warning he faced investigation for “abusive conduct”. It came after a heated exchange with Ian Lavery.

‘Jewish Trump fanatics’ blamed A senior Labour figure under fire for his comments about anti-Semitism at a meeting of the party’s senior governing body has issued an apology and said he will refer himself for equalities training. Peter Willsman, a member of Labour’s ruling national executive committee (NEC), also backtracked on comments he made in last week’s meeting, in which he asked for a show of hands from anyone who had seen anti-Semitism in the party. In his statement on Tuesday, his second apology in a week, he said he was “aware of appalling instances of antiSemitism in the party”, and was “wholly determined to rooting it out of our movement”. Jewish communal organisations called for Willsman to be expelled, but in his latest statement, he implied he had no intention of standing down, saying he had referred himself to receive equalities training

“so I can better understand how to approach discussions of such issues in a respectful way”. In an audio recording obtained by the Jewish Chronicle, he is heard angrily demanding evidence of widespread anti-Semitism from rabbis, and referring to some Jews as “Trump fanatics”, saying he would “take no lectures” from them. He also suggests the crisis had been concocted, arguing social media accounts were easily “falsified”, although the context cannot be heard. He said: “I am sorry for my behaviour in the last meeting, which I deeply regret… I recognise the offensive nature of my comments and that in diminishing the experiences of those who face anti-Semitism in our party and society, I showed a lack of the sensitivity required for discussions around racism.” He added: “I do not believe anti-Semitism is widespread

in the Labour Party and that was what my comments were trying to refer to, but we do have a problem, which needs stamping out.” Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson tweeted: “For the avoidance of doubt: Peter Willsman is and always has been a loud mouthed bully. He disgusts me”, while Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) chairman Luciana Berger said: “The fact it took place in a meeting of @ UKLabour’s sovereign body the other week after all that’s happened is a disgrace.” Berger said Labour should suspend Willsman and conduct a “formal investigation”. Leading left-wing commentators such as Owen Jones, Matt Zarb-Cousin and Ash Sarkar have also backed away from Willsman in light of the audio being released. The veteran left-winger said he “deeply apologised” for any offence caused by the com-

ments, but said that not all of what he said had been “accurately reported”. The recording’s emergence comes amid a flare-up of a row over Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of anti-Semitism by some members of the party. In the clip, Willsman can be heard saying: “Some of these people in the Jewish community support Trump – they are Trump fanatics and all the rest of it. So I am not going to be lectured to by Trump fanatics making up information without any evidence at all.

“So I think we should ask the 70 rabbis, ‘Where is your evidence of severe and widespread anti-Semitism in this party?’” In an open letter earlier this month, 68 rabbis called on Labour to adopt the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism, including its examples, and said antiSemitism within “sections of the Labour party” had become “so severe and widespread we must speak out with one Jewish voice”.

New Labour probe after Hodge faces hate attacks Dozens of Labour members are being investigated as part of a new anti-Semitism probe after the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) documented abuse levelled at Margaret Hodge (pictured). The JLM sent a dossier to the party after the former Labour minister was targeted online for calling Jeremy Corbyn an “anti-Semite and racist” to his face last week, prompting the party to threaten to discipline her. The altercation came after Labour adopted a code of conduct including the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism but reworked or removed four of the accompanying examples of

contemporary anti-Semitism. In the following days, Hodge faced a torrent of abuse from members of three Facebook groups – We Support Jeremy Corbyn, Supporting Jeremy Corbyn & John McDonnell, and Jeremy Corbyn — True Socialism, which included threatening remarks such as that she had “added herself to

the hitlist” and also abuse that JLM suggested would not be viewed as anti-Semitic under the new code. The Sunday Times – which published dossier details last week – has now reported it contained 252 separate cases, with the party processing them within a week. A vast majority were found not to be Labour members. Sophie Goodyear, head of complaints, wrote to JLM: “[The party members] are now being dealt with through the next step of our procedure for complaints for anti-Semitism.” Hodge was accused of “damaging Labour in the interests of Israel” and “under orders of her paymaster in Israel”.

PARTY REFERRED TO COMMISSION Campaign Against Antisemitism has referred the Labour Party to the Equality and Human Rights Commission citing its “discrimination against Jews”. In its complaint to the Commission, CAA said it had cited Labour’s refusal to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism with all its examples.

The CAA cited the party’s “failure to investigate previous complaints against [Jeremy] Corbyn, unreasonable delay and secrecy in disciplinary investigations, bias in disciplinary matters and victimisation of Labour MPs who stand up to anti-Semitism”. It is also complaining about Corbyn for hosting the event in 2010, which compared Israeli actions with the Nazis.

Conspiracy theories take COUNCILLOR’S BLOOD SLUR Labour ‘into a dark place’ Jeremy Corbyn has been accused of “leading Labour into a dark place of ugly conspiracy theories” after footage emerged of him suggesting Israel could be behind a 2012 terror attack on Egyptian police. Sixteen policemen and border guards were killed and seven injured in the jihadi attack. But, interviewed on Iran’s Press TV that year, the then-backbencher said: “I’m very concerned about it [the massacre] and you have to look at the big picture: in whose interests is it to destabilise the new government in Egypt? In whose interest is it to kill Egyptians, other than Israel, concerned at the growing closeness of relationship between Palestine and the Egyptian Government?” Corbyn was asked by presenter Lauren Booth whether “a Muslim [would] go against his Egyptian brother and open fire?” He replied: “It seems a bit unlikely that would happen during Ramadan... and I suspect the hand of Israel in this whole process.” In the programme, uncovered by the Community Security Trust’s Dave Rich, he sits in silence as a Hamas terrorist – convicted for his role in a Jerusalem café bombing that killed seven – recounts his experiences in an Israeli jail without the audience being told Israel accused him of providing the apartment for the bomber to prepare and kept guard – for which he was given seven life sentences.

Jeremy Corbyn on Iran’s Press TV in 2012

Corbyn told Booth he had met the “brother” and others freed under the deal to release Gilad Shalit. Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said: “Jeremy Corbyn is leading the Labour Party into a dark place of ugly conspiracy theories and it has become a home for overt anti-Semites and anti-Semitism.” Jonathan Goldstein, chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council, said it was time for Corbyn to be “more honest with us and his party about his views on the Middle East”. He added: “When Corbyn says he believes in a two-state solution does he mean that in good faith and as recognised by others who promote it?” The Board and Jewish Leadership Council have not been asked to attend further meetings with Corbyn, despite plans for follow-up talks last month.

A Labour councillor suspended over anti-Semitic posts on Facebook has admitted he did publish articles after initially claiming otherwise. Damien Enticott shared a video on his personal Facebook profile headlined “Jewish Ritual – They drink blood and suck baby’s [sic] d***”” – adding to the video that Jews “need executing”. Above the video shared from the “Black Pride” page, the local official in Hatherleigh Ward, Bognor Regis, added text referring to “Talmud Jews”, saying they “are parasites” who “believe any child over three years old that isn’t a Jew should be treated like a parasite”. After Labour confirmed Enticott was suspended, he told HuffPost he did not post them.

“It’s someone in my house that has accessed it and thinks its funny.” However, this week he wrote on Facebook: “I do accept that I posted all the articles in question and that I was confused as to what the papers were asking me about on the phone.” It also emerged that he had a history of antiSemitic posts on Facebook. He once published a post saying: “Hitler would have the solution to the Israeli problem”, explaining now it was posted “out of frustration at seeing unarmed civilians being shot by Israeli soldiers”. A Labour spokesperson said the party “takes all complaints of anti-Semitism extremely seriously” and challenge and campaign against it.

Young activists’ complaint A group of Labour activists who criticised the party’s decision not to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism with all its examples, says it has received a “completely inadequate” response to its concerns, writes Jack Mendel. Eighteen members of Barnet Young Labour (BYL), most of whom are Jewish, wrote to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and chair of the party’s governing body Jennie Formby earlier this month, calling on the party to tackle antiSemitism and fully accept IHRA’s definition. It comes after Labour backed a modified version of IHRA’s definition last month, which omitted four key examples, including accusing

Jewish people of being more loyal to Israel and comparing Israeli policies to those of the Nazis. The letter, signed by “ grassroots, enthusiastic activists”, criticised the party for its handling of the crisis. The group says its task of convincing Barnet – which has the highest Jewish population of any constituency – to vote Labour has “been made impossible by the leadership’s repeated inability to get to grips with the issue of anti-Semitism”. Letter co-signatory Luisa Attfield said Labour’s response “fails to address any of our concerns” including the IHRA definition controversy. In it, Labour said it recognises “antiSemitism has occurred in pockets”.

Corbyn ‘sorry’ for hosting hate A complaint has been sent to Labour over comments by Jeremy Corbyn at a Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) event he hosted in 2010 at which speakers reportedly compared the actions of Israel in Gaza to the Nazis. TheCampaignAgainstAntisemitism(CAA)’s complaint comes after the charity referred the party to the Equality and Human Rights Commission over alleged anti-Semitism. The Labour leader acknowledged that he had appeared alongside people “whose views I completely reject” and apologised for the “concerns and anxiety” that caused. Corbyn said: “The main speaker at this Holocaust Memorial Day meeting, part of a tour entitled ‘Never Again for Anyone – Auschwitz to Gaza’, was a Jewish Auschwitz survivor. Views were expressed at the meeting which I do not accept or condone. “In the past, in pursuit of justice for the Palestinian people and peace in Israel/Palestine, I have on occasion appeared on platforms with people whose views I completely reject. I apologise for the concerns and anxiety that this has caused.” The CAA’s letter to the equality watchdog said: “We charge that the party has, through years of deliberate or reckless dereliction of its duty to enforce its own rules, created an atmosphere in which Jewish members and/or associates are discriminated against.” The organisation also issued a fresh complaint – its third – to Labour about Corbyn. Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, took to Twitter to say: “On Holocaust Memorial Day, when

The EDM was submitted on 27 January 2011, Holocaust Memorial Day, and received just 23 supporters. NATIONAL SECRETARY JEWISH LABOUR MOVEMENT

In the run-up to a vote by Labour’s ruling national executive committee (NEC) to water down the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition and examples for use in its internal disciplinary procedures, something remarkable happened. For a brief moment, 68 rabbis united to call on

the Labour Party to drop its new code of conduct on anti-Semitism. No serious Jewish communal organisation had been consulted in its development, and its treatment of the incendiary elements of anti-Semitic anti-Zionist discourse had left everyone asking how the party could seriously suggest it was tackling its demons with the seriousness and resolve it requires. MPs, Jewish and not, have registered outrage the party could behave in such a deliberate and reckless way. As a consequence of heated exchanges, Margaret Hodge and Ian Austin are the subject of complaints made by other MPs,

and received letters overnight telling them investigations into their conduct had been launched. Peter Willsman, an activist within the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy faction, and a member of Momentum’s slate of candidates for the forthcoming NEC elections, said the disquiet over anti-Semitism had been caused by Trumpsupporting Jewish elements, and that in 50 years he had never seen anti-Semitism in the party. Willsman is likely to be re-elected. As a member of the ‘#JC9’, his factional allies have, to date, tolerated his odious behaviour. Only now, with documentary evidence made public, are they

beginning to realise how much of a liability he his. The paucity of action from the party is telling. For Jewish MPs, immediate letters of investigation. For factional allies, something else. Labour will now attempt to engage Jewish organisations in the new anti-Semitism code of practice consultation that should have taken place before they agreed it. As the July deadline has passed for it to handle all outstanding cases of anti-Semitism, the lack of trust remains at an all-time low. As long as Willsman remains on Labour’s NEC, there can be no trust at all.

Labour anti-Semitism / News

Come clean, Mr Corbyn Jeremy Corbyn was once again forced to apologise this week after being caught red-handed doing the indefensible – this time hosting an event in 2010 comparing Israeli policy to the Nazis. But his mea culpa raises more questions than it answers. As many have been warning for years, this is simply the latest example in a pattern of behaviour from the Labour leader spanning decades. Any denial that the rot in the party is completely disconnected from the leader’s track record is simply absurd. There is no shortage of wider questions about the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and the action being threatened against Margaret Hodge and Ian Austin. But if the Labour leader is serious about building bridges with the community and fighting the rot in his ranks, he must now fill in the gaping holes in his own words…

You say you pursued peace between Israel and the Palestinians and claim you back a two-state solution. But what exactly is the nature of these two states, given you have backed the right of return that would end any chance of a Jewish state?

Why is it that you have repeatedly found yourself on platform with so many people with whom you claim to disagree? Can you point to cases where, in the pursuit of peace, you have hosted events with people with whom you have disagreed in the centre or right of the debate about the Middle East?

• • • • •

Will you today make clear that comparing Israeli policy to the Nazis is anti-Semitic? You apologised for the ‘concern and anxiety caused’ by taking part in events with people with deplorable views. Do you also apologise for hosting this event and booking the room in the first place? Why did you not speak up during the meeting, when a speaker spoke of the “Holocaust religion” and suggested the celebrated survivor was its “high priest”? What did you expect to be said at the meeting when you agreed to book a room as part of a tour entitled ‘Never again for anyone – from Auschwitz to Gaza’? You said sorry for ‘pockets’ of anti-Semitism in Labour’s ranks, expressed regret over the position you’d taken on the antiSemitic mural and now apologise for the hurt caused by your involvement in the event on Holocaust Memorial Day. On each occasion, you have been forced into these apologies by media revelations. Are there other skeletons in your closet you’d like to proactively apologise for?  These questions were sent to Jeremy Corbyn before going to press.

News / Fraudster jailed

‘He destroyed our family’ Freddy David, the disgraced managing director of a now defunct wealth management company, was sentenced this week to six years in prison for fraud, writes Jenni Frazer. But furious victims of his Ponzi scheme, members of the Jewish community in Borehamwood, Elstree, Wembley and elsewhere, left Southwark Crown Court insisting that the jail term was “not long enough”. David’s scheme, in which he created a fake investment product in “an imaginary Bank of Scotland account”, netted him more than £14.5 million over a period of more than 10 years. He used the money to fund a decade-long gambling habit, during which he made more than 10,000 online transactions. He also put the money he stole into investing in Let’s Meat restaurant in Borehamwood, in school fees for his three children, and in holidays in Israel. Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay, outlining the case for Mrs Justice Taylor, said that after a successful career at Barclays Bank, David had become the managing director of HBFS, a “bespoke wealth management and financial advisory firm”. It was regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). David owned 75 percent of the company shares while his wife, Hannah David, owned the remaining 25 percent. But to fund his gambling addiction – for which he did not seek treatment during the period of his fraud – David created “an investment product which did not exist”. He generated forged documents, said Polnay, and when, in the closing months of his fraud, the net appeared to be closing, he paid back some investors with funds from newer investors.

The majority of the victims were known personally to David, who frequently visited his targets in their homes. Many of the 55 victims were elderly or disabled: he defrauded them of a total of £14.5 million, much of which represented people’s life savings. Last November, the FCA began investigating HBFS, at which point David transferred £175,000 of the stolen money into his mother’s account. He also, the court was told, attempted to sell HBFS, which was eventually liquidated in March this year. He was arrested and interviewed twice, but claimed to know nothing of the fraud. At the same time he told anxious investors that their money was safe. But in February this year, David went to a police station and gave a very different account, confessing to the fraud and producing a list of 48 people whose money he had taken. Bizarrely, at the same time as he was carrying out his swindle, David continued to run the rest of the HBFS business legitimately. Analysis before his court appearance showed that only five percent of the company’s funds and activities were fraudulent. Five of David’s victims, all Jewish, gave statements in court. One man, Leon Winsky, of Wembley, had invested £300,000 with David, his life savings after 52 years of hard work. He said: “He has destroyed my family. We have been left penniless and I thought about committing suicide. I was going to jump in front of a train but I wanted to face Freddy David in court.” The family was down to two meals a day and wore coats indoors during cold weather because they could not afford high electricity

Freddy David has been jailed for six years for a £14.5m fraud bills. Worst of all, Winsky said, was the collapse of plans to provide housing for his special needs son, Jonathan. Shiri Koren gave an emotional victim statement on behalf of her parents, Asher and Tova, together with her two sisters. Although David’s defence lawyer, Andrew Trollope, said the fraud had largely stopped by 2016, the Korens’ investment in the fake scheme took place in 2017. Koren said: “He has turned our lives into a living nightmare.”

Calling David “devious, arrogant and cunning”, she said her father had repeatedly asked him if he could take his money out of the investment, but that David had advised him to leave the money where it was. She told Jewish News she knew of at least one victim in Israel who had been forced to leave his old age home as he could no longer pay the fees. And Koren was at her angriest when David’s defence lawyer, alluding to his client’s previous

good character, referred to a number of people who had given character witness on his behalf, including two rabbis. Judge Taylor intervened and asked Trollope whether any of those who had spoken up for David had invested with him. “No, my lady”, she was told. But Koren claimed that not only had rabbis spoken up for him but that as recently as last Shabbat he had been called up in synagogue – which she called “disgraceful”. Auriol Waters, 82, said David “has not only stolen our money, but our peace of mind”, while her husband Sam called him “the most despicable human being I have ever met”. Their trust had been utterly betrayed, they said. Trollope, defending, said David had shown shame and remorse. In his third interview with the police he had said he was “public enemy number one in the Jewish community, and deservedly so. I have very few friends left”. He pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud and deception and was sentenced to four and six years, to run concurrently. But David, who wore a kippah in court, is likely to serve only half that time and to be released on licence thereafter. Two subsequent hearings, of confiscation of David’s assets, and compensation for the victims, which will be paid out of those assets, will take place later this year. Detective Inspector Mark Forster, who led the investigation on behalf of City of London police, said the fraud was “a crime which we were able to stop in its tracks”. He said that when police began their inquiries they were surprised at how long David had been carrying out his fraud – “and how long it went undetected”.

RABBI’S ‘TEARS’ OVER MISTAKEN SUPPORT FOR FRAUDSTER The chairman and rabbi of Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue (BES) have issued a profound apology to the congregation and the victims of convicted fraudster Freddy David, writes Jenni Frazer. The apology came after it emerged in David’s court case on Monday that two rabbis — Borehamwood’s own Chaim Kanterovitz (pictured, far left) and Jeff Berger, founder of the Rambam Sephardi Synagogue ( left), in the same neighbourhood – had given “good character” testimony on behalf of David, who swindled 55 victims out of £14.5 million. In addition, on the Shabbat before his appearance at South-

wark Crown Court, Freddy David, who was given a six-year jail term, was called up at one of Borehamwood’s “boutique” services, its Limmud minyan. In two long and heartfelt letters, Simon Mitchell, the BES chair, and Kanterovitz, apologised for their actions. Mitchell said he had “rightly” fielded numerous calls and emails from congregants. He said he was “appalled and aghast reading the victim statements in the press, some of whom I know are our members. I want to offer them our community’s full support and if anyone would like to be in touch with us in the strictest of confidence to discuss how we can help, please know that I am available”. He made it clear David should not have been called up at the Limmud minyan last Shabbat, and indicated that Kanterovitz’s statement of

support had been made “in a personal capacity, without knowledge or consultation of the honorary officers, who would have guided against it”. Mitchell added that “as a community we feel somewhat tarnished by the actions of our members”. He expressed sympathy with David’s family and said the synagogue would try to learn from its mistakes. Kanterovitz’s letter reflected deep personal distress. He said he had read the accounts of the victims “with shock – to hear how their lives have been shattered and the way they were deceived is heartbreaking”. He said that “like so many of us, I, too, did not know all the facts. I truly and sincerely hope I have not added additional hurt to any of the victims, and if I did I seek their forgiveness”. He signed his letter “with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes”.

The petition from We Believe in Israel calls for Co-op Food, part of the Cooperative Group, to “drop this discriminatory and unjustifiable boycott of Israeli companies”. It follows a protest by Jewish community members last month outside the group’s new Hampstead Garden Suburb store. The Co-op said it did not source goods from areas “where there is a broad international consensus that the status of a designated region or state is illegal”. Commenting on the Warsaw Ghetto picture in the book, Jones writes: “The identity of the child here is uncertain, but the soldier with the rifle is known to be Josef Blösche, a notoriously brutal member of the paramilitary Nazi SS, responsible for the execution of hundreds of Jews in Warsaw.” Also featured is a heartbreaking photograph taken by US soldiers during the liberation of Buchenwald, on 11 April 1945. Among those pictured is a 16-year-old Elie Wiesel.  The Colour of Time: A New History of the World 1850-1960 by Dan Jones and Marina Amaral, £25, on sale 9 August.

POLICE LAUNCH NEW CHABLOZ INVESTIGATION The hate singer convicted of posting “grossly offensive” material mocking the Holocaust is back under investigation, Jewish News understands. Alison Chabloz from Derbyshire, who was given a two-year suspended sentence after being convicted of charges relating to three of her songs at in May, was at it again earlier this month, in a blog post. The police investigation refers to comments she posted following the death of French Jewish film-maker Claude Lanzmann, whose seminal work, Shoah, is credited with helping a generation understand the horrors of the Holocaust. In it, she appears to call the Holocaust a “gargantuan accumulation of nonsense, bound together by an endless string of gossip, relayed to us as gospel truth by our controlled media, our so-called democratic leaders and the brainwashed masses”. She also says she was convicted “for offending the likes of Irene Zisblatt and Elie Wiesel” and refers to Holocaust-era shower heads as providing “Nazi atrocity porn exhibits”, a comment she then refers to as “crass humour”. Jewish News understands that the article was referred to the police by the Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland Community Rehabilitation Company, a private-sector supplier of probation and prison rehabilitation services. Officers from Derbyshire Constabulary are understood to be investigating. While not commenting on individual cases, a Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “Suspended sentences include strict condi-

tions which, if breached, can result in further punishment, including time behind bars.” At her trial in May, brought by Campaign Against Antisemitism, Chabloz was convicted of two counts of sending an offensive, indecent or menacing message through a public communications network and a third charge relating to a song on YouTube. She was sentenced to 20 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and banned from posting anything on social media for 12 months. Stephen Silverman of Campaign Against Antisemitism: “Alison Chabloz is under investigation for alleged further offences after Campaign Against Antisemitism reported two blog posts to the police. We believe these posts may also constitute breaches of her suspended prison sentence.”

Teen protester released A Palestinian 17-year-old who became an international symbol of resistance against Israel after slapping two soldiers has walked out of prison to declare she wants to study law to defend her people. In a news conference in the courtyard of her family home, Ahed Tamimi raised her fist and said the “occupation must leave”. She revealed she had completed her school exams in prison and added: “I will study law to defend my people and defend my Palestinian cause in international forums.” However, the once feisty

Tamimi says she wants to study law to help Palestinians

youngster appeared to be subdued, stopping short of committing to continued acts of protest and saying her eightmonth prison stint had taught

her to appreciate life. Underlying her case are clashing narratives about Israel’s half-century rule over the Palestinians, the extent of per-

missible Palestinian resistance to it and the battle for global public opinion. Tamimi’s supporters see a brave girl who struck two armed soldiers in frustration after having just learned that Israeli troops seriously injured a 15-year-old cousin, shooting him in the head from close range with a rubber bullet during nearby stone-throwing clashes. In Israel, she is seen by many either as a provocateur, an irritation or a threat to the military’s deterrence policy – even a “terrorist”.

Israeli killed in attack PALESTINE ELECTED AT UN A teenage terrorist stabbed and killed one Israeli and wounded two others in a Jewish settlement near Jerusalem. The assailant mounted the security fence surrounding Adam last Thursday and stabbed two men before being shot to death by a third, who also suffered stab wounds. The army revealed that resident, Yotam Ovadia, 31, later

died of his wounds. Magen David Adom reacted to the emergency.

The observer mission for Palestine has been elected to head a bloc of 134 countries representing 80 percent of the world’s population at the UN in a snub to Israel and the US. Palestine was chosen as the 2019 chair by the bloc called Group of 77, based on its membership when it formed in 1964. In the bloc’s system of geographical rotation, an Asian

state was due to take over the role of chair from Egypt in September, but in a show of solidarity, Asian states voted unanimously to hand it to Palestine. The move is seen as a diplomatic rebuke to Donald Trump for his relocation of the American Embassy to Jerusalem and his decision to slash US aid for UN agencies working with Palestinian refugees.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Taking a stand against hatred It can sometimes seem like there are so many awards that someone should offer awards for awards, but for those fatigued we say this: there could hardly be a more appropriate time to honour those who stand up to hatred. That’s why we are so proud to media sponsor the #No2H8Crime Awards, run jointly by a Jewish man, ex-Community Security Trust chief Richard Benson, and a Muslim man, Tell MAMA boss Fiyaz Mughal. Hate crimes are on the rise, as are the factors propelling them, so standing up is now more important than ever, not least because it can seem to require more bravery. Rising hate – as we’ve seen lately in our own community – can be a symptom of increasing intolerance, fuelled by the echo chamber that is social media, where debates over huge issues such as Brexit quickly turn nasty. Add to that the ascendency of populist leaders willing to play with people’s fears of ‘the other’ for short-term electoral gain, and it looks bleak. It can sometimes feel like a race to the bottom. That is why those who stand up are so commendable. So please nominate someone or something for their good deed, whether or not it was done in working hours, because it is these people who will stop hatred in its tracks. It has already gone far enough.

WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE SAID... When Margaret Hodge accused Jeremy Corbyn to his face of being an anti-Semite, the answer to give should have been an emphatic “No, I am not”. We all know what he said and I think it’s pretty clear to the Jewish community where he stands. Is it any wonder that

one of his own MPs accused him of being antiSemitic? No person who is against racism of any type should even consider voting for Labour while the present regime remains in control of the party. Geoff Abrahams By email

Corbyn won’t stand up I DON’T SEE THE PROBLEM Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl is wasting her time hoping Jeremy Corbyn will grasp the nettle of Jew hatred in parts of the Labour Party. He does not accept that 300,000 Jews of the UK are any sort of oppressed minority worthy of the support he accords other minority groups. One statement from Corbyn will do. ‘This party has no place for those holding vile opinions about Jews, much less making odious public statements or posting

offensive comments to or about Jews. I reject your views; I don’t want your vote or membership. If exposed, you’ll be expelled. You are ruining this party’s reputation as defender of all minorities. This activity is not in my name.’ This would take more courage than appearing at Glastonbury, espousing protest marches or putting on his own poorly supported rallies. I hope Ms van der Zyl isn’t holding her breath. I’m not.

Barry Hyman Bushey Heath

Please explain how Corbyn’s Labour Party is anti-Semitic so I can finally grasp this whole thing, because I can’t see it. Every article about it is hazy and loaded with supposition. Criticising Israel for barbaric behaviour is not anti-Semitic and things I’ve seen, such as the Wadsworth/Smeeth incident, are not anti-Semitic, unless you read far more into it than happened or was said on tape. The mural thing was horrible, and Corbyn’s

comments idiotic; there are vile trolls everywhere. I worked for Labour, but left when Blair went bonkers with Bush, and I’ve never been comfortable with the party since. With a pathetic Tory government, yet more internecine strife prevails. Tom Green By email

Well said, professor

OUR NATURAL HOME? THERE’S A SURPRISE

Professor John Strawson’s article in last week’s Jewish News is an indictment of the incompetence and intransigence of Jeremy Corbyn and his clique. His honest assessment of his sympathy for the Palestinian people has long been chronicled in the Jewish press, but never was his criticism of Israel vitriolic or vindictive. He has never said Israel is a racist state or should not exist. When someone like him decides to leave Labour because of the failure to accept the full IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, it speaks volumes: the party has crossed a line its staunchest supporters cannot stomach. Will it make a difference to the hardliners? Probably not; they are so

no children to consult. This is for a research article for the Jewish Military Museum of AJEX. Please contact me on martin. sugarman@yahoo.co.uk

It was interesting, and appropriate, for the entire national “Jewish press“ to take the unprecedented action of publishing exactly the same front page at exactly the same time. My only criticism is that in doing so, a questionable, highly contentious statement was made. The coverage stated that “the party (Labour) was, until recently, the natural home for our community”. Really? I feel sure this will come as very surprising news to many members of “our community”.

EEK! ISRAEL PRAISED! Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles, Israel is in the news in a productive way. TV and the media, including the BBC, reported in glowing terms Israel’s involvement in the act of taking around 425 Syrian White Helmet humanitarian aid workers and their families out of danger to Jordan. How, I wonder, will the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement react to something that is an

anathema to them, namely the world seeing a positive side of Israel? Probably in their usual way, screaming that it was an act of propaganda, and Israel is still a rogue state. It wouldn’t surprise me if Corbyn acolytes pressure him to recall parliament for an emergency meeting to censure Israel for risking the lives of the Syrians in such a dangerous venture. This year silly season has become stupidite season JENNI FRAZER

T

he trouble with the lunacies in the Jewish world is that the whirligig effect is so strong. No sooner has one absorbed the most recent evidence of derangement than the circus has moved on, providing the greedy commentariat with fresh grist to its already over-stuffed mill. We are, I am afraid, in just such a week, despite the convention that summer is the “silly season” for news and that very little of substance normally happens. But, as we have wearily recorded before, we are not living in normal times. Let us begin with the national act of selfdelusion that is Israel’s most recent political act, the new nation-state law. This law has been something like seven years in the making and finally went on the statute books two weeks ago, to rabid cheers from the right-wing and cries of despair from the left.

BENNETT UNDERSTOOD HOW THE NEW LAW WOULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE DRUZE, WHO REACTED WITH OUTRAGE

But no sooner did the nation-state act become law than the grinding gears of U-turns could be heard, most notably from Bibi’s right-wing rival, Naftali Bennett, head of the Jewish Home party. Bennett, who can read the political runes quite well, understood – better than Bibi, it seems – how the new law would have an impact on the Druze community in Israel, which has reacted with outrage, claiming the law makes them into second-class citizens. Bennett said: “It has become clear that the manner in which the nation-state law was enacted is very damaging – especially to

them and to anyone who has tied his fate to the Jewish state. “This, of course, was not the intention of the Israeli government. These are our brothers who stand shoulder to shoulder with us on the battlefield and made a covenant with us – a covenant of life. We, the government of Israel, have a responsibility to find a way to heal the rift.” To which one might reply: Aw, diddums. Did the nasty government push through a law without thinking about its consequences? What a surprise. Five minutes later, politically speaking, The Jerusalem Post fired cartoonist Avi Katz from its magazine, The Jerusalem Report, for a cartoon he drew criticising the nationstate law, invoking George Orwell’s seminal novel, Animal Farm, with its central contention that “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”. Katz, who has worked for the Report for 30 years, drew government ministers as pigs, which did not go down well. To be clear: the firing was stupid and makes Israel look stupid.

DAY Trip ZIONIST PIONEERS

to the

Parts of Israel were behaving admirably last week, offering help to the Greek Government to combat the devastating fires there, and performing a dangerous and heroic rescue of hundreds of Syria’s White Helmets community, en route to repatriation elsewhere. But for every good deed, the white noise of the idiotic drowns it out. And while we are on stupidities, I almost can’t fix on one, among so many in the current non-relationship between our own Jewish community and the turbulent mess that is Britain’s Labour Party. But, even judging by the low bar that we must apply to all such nonsense, Barnet Council reached new depths this week with the apparent suggestion that in return for failing to deal with anti-Semitism, Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn should be divested of ... leadership? Authority? Wrong. The answer is his allotment. Give me, as they say, strength. The allotment, dear Barnet Council idiots, is the best place for him. Let him moulder among the giant marrows and rot on the compost heap.

The trouble with Israel’s new Nation State law DAVID HOROVITZ EDITOR, TIMES OF ISRAEL

I

n an Army Radio interview on Sunday, Israel’s incoming opposition leader, Tzipi Livni, said she had repeatedly urged government legislators in the run-up to 19 July’s passage of Israel’s new Jewish nation-state law to add in a single crucial phrase. She had, she made clear, no objection to the text declaring Israel to be “the national home of the Jewish people.” Quite the reverse. But to ensure that the law fully reflected modern Israel’s founding principles, she argued, it also needed to include Israel’s commitment to “equality for all its citizens.” In the Declaration of Independence, she noted, Israel promises “complete equality to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex.” Few if any of Israel’s Arab Knesset members would have voted for the bill even in the form she wanted, Livni acknowledged – since rather than a Jewish and democratic state, they seek to designate Israel as the state of all its citizens. But had that “equality” phrase been inserted, most or all the rest of the opposition would have supported it, and the law would have garnered about 100 of the 120 Knesset members’ votes, rather than squeezing through, as it did, by 62 votes to 55. How impressive such overwhelming support would be, she argued to coalition members, how resonant an endorsement of Israel’s central principles. In the days since the law was passed, the controversy surrounding it, rather than dissipating fairly quickly, as most controversies do, has intensified. Some critics consider the law to constitute the legislative codifying of discrimination, and therefore bitterly interpret it as the beginning of – or another slip in the continuing slide toward – the end of Israeli democracy. Until Saturday, the most resonant objections to the law came from Israel’s 130,000strong Druze community. While several MKs from the Joint (Arab) List protested the law as discriminatory, vowed to seek international intervention, and even enlisted Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in their battle against it, their criticisms made little impression on the Israeli Jewish mainstream; they are not Zionists. But complaints of discrimination from the Druze, who fight alongside the Jews in the Israel Defence Forces and have paid a heavy price in lost lives in the defense of the nation, were internalised and even endorsed by some government ministers. Netanyahu robustly insisted that criticism of the law, which he called the “essence of the Zionist vision,” was “nonsense.” “The State of Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people, with full equality of rights for all its citizens,” he said. “This is the meaning of the words ‘Jewish and democratic state,’” he said.

Israelis at a protest against the Israeli “Jewish nation-state” law in Tel Aviv on Monday

“Does the fact that our flag has a Star of David invalidate the individual right of any Israeli citizen? Nonsense – this statement ensures that there will be no other flag,” he added. “Does the statement that ‘Hatikva’ is our national anthem detract from the personal rights of anyone in Israel? Nonsense – it says there will be no other anthem.” Except, of course, that those phrases – “full equality of rights for all its citizens” and “Jewish and democratic state” – do not appear in the Jewish nation-state law, despite the efforts of the likes of Livni and the maverick Likud MK Benny Begin. Enshrining in Israel’s Basic Laws, the closest thing we have to a constitution, principles such as Israel as the “historical homeland of the Jewish people” with Jerusalem as its capital, the Star of David on its flag, and Hatikvah as its anthem, may well have been overdue. But in a country that, absolutely legitimately, grants automatic citizenship under the Law of Return to Jews, the equality of all Israeli citizens is a commitment that also requires the firmest establishment. There is no contradiction in being a Jewish state that opens its doors wide to all Jews, and in being a democracy that stands for full equality for all who live here. Indeed, the capacity to reconcile those two principles goes to the heart of Israel; it makes Israel unique and rightly celebrated. Those foundational principles must flourish together. Passing a piece of landmark legislation that needlessly and deliberately – as shown by the legislative process – omitted one of them is plainly harmful to Israel’s reputation. Time will tell if it has practical implications, as a legislative cover for discrimination, but it is also, by dint of what it omits, potentially harmful to Israel’s sense of itself and what we stand for. Earlier iterations of the legislation did include references to Israel as a democracy. And three years ago, Begin drafted a proposed text of the law that stated: “Israel is the homeland of the Jewish people, based on the foundations of freedom, justice and peace as envisioned by the prophets of Israel, and upholds equal rights for all its citizens.”

In its final, very deliberate wording, the law smacks of narrow political interest outweighing the national good. Rush-writing the nascent state’s core principles 70 years ago, amid pandemonium and with war imminent, Israel’s founders, patriots all, did a far

better job.He also sought to portray his leftwing opponents as ostensibly “ashamed” of Zionism: “The Israeli Left must search within itself. It needs to ask itself why the basic term of Zionism, ‘a Jewish national state of the Jewish people in its land’, has become a rude term for it — a rude word, a principle that one should be ashamed of. We are not ashamed of Zionism,” said Netanyahu. “We are proud of our state, which strictly upholds the individual rights of all its citizens. The Knesset’s new Jewish nation-state law is, inevitably, being appealed to the Supreme Court, which may find a basis to intervene, or may consider the law’s provisions to be declarative and/or not contradictory to Israel’s already legislated Jewish and democratic principles. In this context, it might be noted that the composition of the Supreme Court has been slowly changing in recent years, with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, a member of Bennett’s Orthodox-nationalist Jewish Home party, working to advance justices who she considers to be broadly comfortable with her political philosophy.

Corbyn’s world view is nearer Iran than Israel CLAUDIA MENDOZA DIRECTOR OF POLICY AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS, JLC

A

recent YouGov poll conducted for The Times reveals more Labour members (65 percent) believe Israel is a force for bad in the world than Iran (59 percent). This ought to be a shocking statistic for a party supposedly committed to ethical and progressive principles. Iran arms the terrorist organisation Hezbollah, supports the Syrian fascist dictator Assad, hangs gay people, withholds freedom of religion to Baha’is and denies the Holocaust. The Houthis, Iran’s proxy organisation in Yemen, openly flies a flag modelled on the motto of revolutionary Iran and bears the inscription “God is great. Death to America, Death to Israel, a Curse on the Jews. Victory to Islam”. Labour-type democratic socialist parties are not free to organise in Iran and independent trade unions are non-existent. Given that the leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, and those around him have spent their entire political careers opposing Israel and at best equivocating on Iran, the results of the poll should hardly come as a surprise. The worldview that allows dictatorships and repressive theocracies such as Iran to be favoured over democracies such as Israel is important in light of the antiSemitism crisis that has embroiled the party. Indeed, the same poll revealed that nearly eight out of 10 Labour members believe that accusations of anti-Semitism are being exaggerated to damage Corbyn and stifle legitimate criticism of Israel. This pernicious anti-western ideology where countries whose slogan is ‘death to America’ are feted over a democracy can only be sustained by the propagation of conspiracy theories, and where there are conspiracy theories, there are Jews – providing a scapegoat for all the world’s ills. Prejudice against any minority is always based on perceptions of inferiority, but prejudice against Jews is based on perceptions of superiority, including ugly assertions that Jews control the world. This was what traditional right-wing anti-Semitism looked like, and while that has not disappeared, we are witnessing a new edition of age-old anti-Semitism on the far left, including that Jews have malign interests and work at the behest of the Israeli Government, Mossad, or Donald Trump. In the warped world of identity politics – a purview of the left – how can the powerful be victimised? When Corbyn spoke at the United Nations’ Geneva headquarters last year, he berated the UK Government for championing some human rights issues but

WHERE THERE ARE CONSPIRACY THEORIES THERE ARE JEWS – A SCAPEGOAT FOR ALL THE WORLD’S ILLS remaining silent on others. Silence, he claimed, made it complicit in these violations. On this he is not wrong, just hypocritical. Take, for example, his silence when Iranians took to the streets at the end of last year to demonstrate over government corruption. The protesters were met with force – in some cases, lethal force – by the authorities. Emily Thornberry, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, belatedly gave Labour’s position saying the party was unable to support the demonstrators because it was unclear who had “the white hats”. Similarly, when Syrians were killed by a chemical weapons attack, a Labour ‘spokesperson’ equivocated and obfuscated. Contrast this with the unequivocal condemnation of the recent violence at the Gaza-Israel border. Corbyn tweeted: “The killing and wounding by Israeli forces of civilians demonstrating for Palestinian rights in Gaza is appalling. The UK Government must make its voice heard on the urgency of a genuine settlement for peace and justice.” Given that many of those killed were

Hamas members – a terrorist organisation with whom Corbyn has met and members of which he has called his “friends” and “brothers” – of course he has gifted them the white hats. Hostility towards Israel and the whitewashing of the far worse crimes of her enemies is par for the course, but there is no moral equivalency between dictatorship and democracy. Only conspiracy theories can invert that reality. To the far left, Israel is the modern day Jew, a western-backed liberal democracy that is painted as a pariah imperialist state, subjugating the blighted Palestinians, and which is also victim to bizarre conspiracy theories. When Corbyn appeared on Press TV, the Iranian state-owned broadcaster in 2012 (after it had its UK licence revoked by Ofcom), he linked a jihadi massacre of 16 Egyptian policeman to Israel – “you have to look at the big picture: in whose interests is it to destabilise the new government in Egypt,” he asked. That he “suspects the hand of Israel” shows how his hatred of the Jewish state can be expressed through conspiracy theories. This puts into context the row over the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, or IHRA, definition of anti-Semitism. How can Corbyn endorse a definition of anti-Semitism that would render many of his fellow travellers anti-Semites? This is the anti-Semitism the far left shares with the Iranian regime. Indeed, the acid test of a ‘good Jew’

Jeremy Corbyn on Iranian state owned Press TV in 2012, linking the jihadi murders of 16 Egyptians to Israel

is what they think about Israel’s actions, and more ominously, Israel’s right to exist. For Marxists, Jewish emancipation required the shunning of all that is specifically Jewish. Today that means shunning Israel; something the majority of Jews cannot and will not do, hence why this conflict between the Jewish community and the current Labour Party is so intractable. The leadership of the Labour Party cannot accept that the existence of a state of Israel is not a racist endeavour any more than the Jewish community can accept that it is. The irony is that Corbyn’s brand of politics asserts that people can be unconsciously prejudiced because the system is rigged against the underdog. Corbyn’s handling of the Jewish community’s concerns of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party flies in the face of how he characterises racism for any other group, precisely because of where he places Jews on the hierarchy of identity politics. Those who claim the anti-Semitism within the party is an aberration tainting a fundamentally moral worldview are wrong. The anti-Semitism is a symptom of the malaise of this worldview. The two go hand-in-hand, which is why this shouldn’t be a fight for just the Jews, but for liberals, democrats, and patriots alike.

3 BEN CELEBRATES

Ben Raymond celebrated his 107th birthday in Nightingale House. Born Benjamin Isaac John in 1911, he changed his surname by deed poll after the start of the Second World War for fear of repercussion in the event of a German invasion of England. He met his wife of 76 years, Millie, at a dance academy in Piccadilly in 1933, and moved into Nightingale House in 2012 when both were aged over 100, following the death of their only son. Millie passed away soon after. A keen traveller and a connoisseur of pipes and whiskey, which he enjoys to this day, Ben retains his positive outlook on life.

4 PUPILS GRADUATE

Special needs school Side by Side marked the graduation of its pupils with a celebratory evening. Teachers, staff, parents and families of the graduates were addressed by Rabbi Feldman, while each pupil shared a few words, expressing excitement for the future, but also sadness at leaving the school. Gerald Lebrett, Side by Side’s headteacher, said: “Every child who walks through the doors at Side by Side brings their own unique and special personality. Our graduates have shown a tremendous ability to shine in their own special way and give so much joy to everyone who gets to know them. They are a credit to their parents, school and community.”

‘We’re all just trying to be good people’ Jewish author Jemma Wayne-Kattan has helped reimagine a Hindu text for children – and found plenty of similarity between the two religions, writes Alex Galbinski

G

rowing up, Jemma Wayne had many Hindu friends. But little could this Jewish author know that one day she would be called upon to reimagine one of the holiest books in the Hindu religion. GITA: The Battle of the Worlds, which Wayne wrote under her married surname Wayne-Kattan, along with her long-time friend Sonal Sachdev Patel, is her first children’s book. The project offered the author and journalist a departure from her previous work, which includes the critically-acclaimed novels, After Before and Chains of Sand, as well as Bare Necessities, a tongue-in-cheek guide to being a grown-up. GITA revolves around the story of an 11-year-old boy named Dev, who is struggling with his emotions after the death of his father. At the start, Dev’s overriding emotion is anger, and he lashes out at his younger brother. He is consumed by his grief, but meets Sanjay, a spritelike being who informs him there is a battle raging inside Dev’s own body, between the noble warrior Arjun and the wicked Prince Ego. Sachdev Patel, the social entre-

preneur who came up with the original idea for the book, asked Wayne, 38, to collaborate on it owing to her creative writing background. As Wayne explains: “Sonal is Hindu and the Gita [its full name is the Bhagavad Gita] has always been a special text for her, but it contains a lot of really difficult concepts. She realised, as she had children, that it’s quite difficult to share those ideas with them. She wanted to create something that made that text accessible to kids.” The original story of the Gita – which comes from the larger Mahabharata – is about the epic battle between two warriors and their tribes. One, the noble warrior Arjun, has a moment of hesitation on the battlefield when he recognises that some of his enemies are also his cousins and is

reluctant to fight them. At this point, the Hindu deity of Krishna talks to him about a number of things, including that he must do his duty and defeat the enemy. However, according to the Hindu guru Paramahansa Yogananda, this is not a battle about warring human armies, but a metaphor between good and bad tendencies within ourselves. Wayne explains: “Sometimes we are reluctant to defeat those bad tendencies, because they are very attractive, and we like to do things that aren’t right, but Yogananda says it is our duty to defeat them, because ultimately they’re not good for our soul and our way of life.” To be able to fully grasp the themes of the Gita, Wayne studied the text, Yogananda’s interpretation, and read around the subject. “Before studying the texts, I only knew what I’d learnt at school and from having close friends who are Hindu – you learn about each other’s traditions. “I think the Hindu and Jewish communities in the UK generally connect very well and there’s a lot of interaction between us.” While obviously deeply-rooted in Hindu scripture, Wayne, who

attends Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue, emphasises the universality of the story’s themes. “What attracted me to the story is that message of the battle between good and bad, wanting to be a good person and trying to make choices to live a good life is such a universal message that transcends all religions.” The theme of the battle between good and evil shares similarities with the Jewish notion of free will: it is up to each of us to make moral choices. In terms of her Judaism, the mother-of-two says she loves the Jewish “traditions, the community and that fundamental idea of trying to have an ethos by which we try to be good people”, although she comes from a questioning base. “I was brought up in a Reform Jewish household, but my dad [the American-born composer Jeff Wayne, who is behind the musical The War of the Worlds] is a self-proclaimed agnostic,” she explains, “so our dinner table was always full of debate, and we challenged things all the time, which I loved. “Judaism is an intrinsic part of my identity, but I don’t

feel particularly tied to the legalistic side of it. And when people cling to their singular doctrines of this is the only way to act or worship, that’s when we start to exclude and divide, and we forget that we’re all just trying to be good people.” I ask Wayne what she hopes young readers will take away from GITA. “To think about those different emotions within themselves, to feel like they have some choice over which ones they choose to enable, and just to take some moments for some internal reflection, to begin that journey. “I also hope they’ll enjoy the adventure story. It was really important that, as well as it being about these deeper messages, hopefully it was also a good story – because when you’re reading anything, particularly as a child, that’s the most important part.”  GITA: The Battle of the Worlds by Sonal Sachdev Patel and Jemma Wayne-Kattan is published by HarperCollins, priced £7.99. Welcome to America!

Jewish communities in the United States are smoothing the path for refugees by organising summer camps for newcomers, writes Ben Sales

W

hen Isaac Eastlund signed up to be a volunteer at a Jewish-run American summer camp for refugee children, he expected to have to confront trauma. Instead, he found his campers, a couple of months or years removed from fleeing Afghanistan or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, plugged into their phones, listening to some of his favourite rappers like Migos or Kendrick Lamar. “I was nervous just because I knew I’d be working with refugees, and I had this expectation that they might be damaged in some way and it might be difficult to navigate around that,” said Eastlund, 18. “But the cool part to me was seeing how normal these kids really are, and how easy it was to connect with them on a personal level.” Eastlund, who had just graduated from high school near St. Louis, Missouri, is a member of staff at a day camp for refugees run by the local Jewish Community Relations Council. It’s one of a few summer camps across the US run by Jews for refugees. The camps hope to acclimatise the new arrivals and ease the load for their parents. But mostly they want to provide a relaxed space where kids can be kids. “The cultural barrier we see the most is these kids are on guard,” said Alyssa Banford, a staff member at the JCRC who coordinates the St. Louis camp’s operations. “The kids who have just arrived in the US are totally overwhelmed and they have their guards up. They haven’t been in an environment where they can be just kids and have fun.” The programme, in its second year, has around 80 campers and 160 staff volunteers this summer. It

runs for three hours a day for four weeks. In Washington State, the Union for Reform Judaism co-organises two week-long camps for refugees. And a synagogue in Sacramento, California, has a two-week camp for refugees alongside the day camp it runs on its campus for Jewish kids. Each of the camps is run in conjunction with a local immigrant aid organisation. The Jewish organisers say they hope to provide a friendly atmosphere for the kids in a country where immigrants can feel threatened by the national mood. “Our political climate is such that it would be very easy for new immigrants or refugees to feel as if they’re not welcome here,” said Alyssa’s mother, Rhonda Banford, a speech pathologist who serves as the St. Louis camp director. “That means it’s really important to me to let them know that we’re happy they’re here.” For the families of the children, the camps offer a dual benefit: structured time with other kids, and supervision that enables parents to work or study. The camp’s hours coincide with English classes run for the campers’ parents at the International Institute of St. Louis, an immigrant integration service, which also hosts the camp. Ahmad Ibrahimi, who emigrated from Afghanistan with his wife and two children, hopes the Sacramento staff will help to fill the caretaker roles played by members of his extended family in his home country. “There we lived in a family,” he said. “Everyone lived together, but here there is no one. They should go out and find more friends. It makes their life here easier.” The kids spend most of their time

Clockwise from top left: Arts and crafts at the St. Louis camp; a camper and a staff member share a relaxing moment, and one of the other happy campers

playing soccer or doing arts and crafts, but they and their staff still need to bridge some cultural divides. They are encouraged to use gestures and other non-verbal communication to include kids who are still learning English. The Sacramento camp, called Camp Nefesh, or soul, instituted a dress code for counsellors out of respect for Middle Eastern modesty norms. “Some of the kids wear hijabs,” said Denise Crevin, the director of education at Congregation B’nai Israel, which hosts and runs Camp Nefesh. “Our staff can’t wear their super-short shorts or skinny tank tops because we’re working with a population not used to those things. I just encourage my team not to be shy about getting clarity.” But staff members across the

camps said English is not a major obstacle. The kids pick up the new language quickly, they said – especially because they live among English speakers all year. Banford said kids who returned to the St. Louis camp for a second year came with drastically improved English. “Most of them speak pretty well and they understand a lot, so we had to increase our English activity,” she said. “I thought we would have to be teaching them nouns and action words. Instead, we’re playing Pictionary and charades.” Although the camps aim to provide the children with an escape, counsellors still need to be cognisant of the often-painful experiences endured by their campers. The Washington facilities teach staff to be especially gentle and empathetic. “Even if the context of the camp is fun — that’s sort of the energy there — there’s still things refugees can be triggered by,” said Jonah Freelander, director of strategic partnerships and development for Mitzvah Corps, a teenage social justice initiative of the Union for Reform Judaism. Teenagers are instructed, he said, to “avoid perception of an aggressive interaction, not to raise their voices

and to be patient and make sure everyone feels included”. At the St. Louis camp, the staff try to make cultural acclimatisation fun. Members of the United Soccer League’s Saint Louis FC have visited the campers, as has Fredbird, the local baseball team’s mascot. The campers experienced a “Taste of St. Louis,” which included local cuisine like toasted ravioli, St. Louis pizza (yes, it’s a thing) and gooey butter cake. At the end of the summer, the children will participate in an “I am an American” parade. “It’s a good experience for them to be with the people, to be around the kids,” said Mohammed Yaqoob, whose two children, aged nine and six, attend the St. Louis camp and enjoy playing soccer there. “Especially when they took them outside, they have a lot of fun.” Despite the contentiousness around immigration nationally, the Jewish organisers say they have had little pushback from their communities because American Jews’ immigrant heritage has made welcoming refugees a consensus priority. Crevin said that after watching the national immigration debate unfold, her congregation’s youngsters jump at the chance to put their values into action. “The population of teenagers who want to help with this effort feel a little paralysed,” she said “They say ‘stuff is happening in the world, and how am I going to make a difference?’ This is a chance for them to do something.”

The jewel in Portugal’s crown

Lucy Daltroff explores the unspoilt region of Alentejo, with its abundant natural beauty and medieval Jewish history

L

ooking out the window on the two-hour drive from Lisbon to the Alentejo region of Portugal, it seems almost every power pylon has a large stork’s nest perched on top, with chicks peering over the rim. They look healthy enough, but I can’t help worrying about the long-term implications of their precarious home location. Alentejo literally means “beyond the Tejo” (Tagus river) and the region has a raw rural beauty, with extensive undulating plains, fields of cork trees and numerous vineyards. It’s situated in south central Portugal and although it covers almost a third of the country, it seems to have escaped mass tourism unlike the nearby Algarve. I am here to visit its Unesco World Heritage attractions, which include towns, individual buildings and traditional handicrafts. First stop is the region’s ancient and charming capital, Évora, historically a major trading and religious centre. The city walls and majestic 1st Century Corinthian Temple point to its ancient past – author Pliny the Elder mentioned his visit – but it’s no museum-like metropolis because it’s also

a thriving university town. Everywhere there is unusual architecture, and long winding cobbled streets, which all lead to the historical Giraldo Square. In the Middle Ages, Évora was the second city of Portugal and had one of the most extensive Jewish quarters, with around 150 communities overall. Within a small group of streets and alleyways, stood two synagogues, the baths, and a hospital. Sadly, not much of Évora’s Jewish past is still visible today. This is not the case just 30 miles up the road at Estremoz. This fortified town is divided into two distinct parts; the flat lower commercial area called “vila nova” and the “cidade velha” by the castle. Here the medieval Jewish presence is more visible and I was able to see houses with distinct indentations where mezuzahs were once fixed. Estremoz is often referred to as the “white city” and it is true that most of the houses dazzle in the sun, but it really gets its nickname from marble. Everything is made of the stuff, from humble doorsteps to cobblestones. As our guide, Luis, explained: “Portugal is the second largest exporter of marble in the world – only the Carrara area in Italy is bigger – and 85 percent

of it comes from round here.” But my real purpose is to see the local artisan tradition of clay figure-making; a 17th Century craft that now has Unesco status. Each piece consists of three sections and, after 12 hours firing in the oven, they are then dressed in either the regional attires of Alentejo, or as part of religious Christian iconography. Although you can view the figures in the museum, I preferred visiting the Irmãs Flores workshop where they are fired, painted and sold. One of the two Flores sisters told me she had been doing this work since she was 13. The finished results are relatively cheap, costing less than €50 (£44), although as she explained, “prices have risen a little since Unesco status was conferred in 2017”. It’s difficult to visit Alentejo without mentioning the importance of the ubiquitous cork trees. The trade provides employment for about 60,000 workers and it’s the only tree where the regular stripping of the bark causes absolutely no damage. The cork is gathered during mid-summer, by teams using locally-made hand-axes. Cork uses include flooring and the inside of cricket balls but, most famously, as a bottle stopper. We are told the harvest of one mature tree provides sufficient bark to produce about 4,000 corks. In the attractive walled village of Monsaraz, we drank wine and ate my favourite Portuguese delicacy, pastéis de nata (custard tarts), while looking over to Alqueva Lake, one of the biggest artificial lakes in Europe. Owing to its elevation, Monsaraz has always occupied an important place in history and,

in 2016, a special Jewish Interactive Centre, was opened in memory of 80 former residents who were persecuted 500 years ago during the Portuguese inquisition. Its purpose is to explain more about the Portuguese Jewish community, an initiative that is a part of both Spain and Portugal’s current investment in preserving their 16th century Jewish heritage. Since 2013, both countries have passed laws allowing the descendants of Sephardic Jews to become citizens, in what was described as “an act of atonement for the inquisition”. The museum in Monsaraz is a simple white structure with just a couple of rooms on two floors and a permanent film show. It explains that Jewish quarters existed in every town – mainly to restrict interaction between Christians and Jews. This was even more of an issue after 1492 when the already substantial community of Portugal grew, after tens of thousands emigrated from neighbouring Spain as a result of the Spanish inquisition. In 1536, Portugal had its own Inquisition and Jewish citizens were stripped of their possessions, forcibly converted to Christianity or made to leave, while thousands more were killed. The current Jewish population in Portugal now stands around 1,000. Recently, the government allocated more than £4million to the Portuguese Jewish Network Sefarad Routes, a state-funded project for preservation works at sites connected to the country’s Jewish past. This will include the renovation of the ancient synagogue in the municipality of Elvas, another of Portugal’s hidden gems.

SEDRA

It’s Biblical

Ekev

BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN Moses prepares the B’nei Yisrael for their entry into the Promised Land in his farewell speech, despite being painfully aware he will not be joining his beloved people. After reminding them of their misdemeanours and of Hashem’s goodness, he compares and contrasts their destination, the Land of Israel, with their place of origin, Egypt. He explains Israel is unlike Egypt, ‘Where you plant your seed and water it on foot, like a vegetable garden’ (Devarim 11:10). Moses is referring to the River Nile, which irrigates the Nile Delta area like clockwork. This fertile area is unlike Israel, which has no natural water source, but rather ‘from the rain of Heaven will it drink water’ (Devarim 11:11). The question is that surely Egypt is more fertile than Israel and would therefore be a more suitable location for the Promised Land, but the answer demonstrates Israel’s unique qualities and its suitability for the B’nei Yisrael. Israel’s annual rainfall remains a major issue. Indeed, one of the issues leading up to the Six-Day War was the Headwater Diversion Plan, an Arab League plan to divert two of the three sources of the Jordan River, and prevent them from flowing into the Sea of Galilee. Israel is dependent on rainwater precisely because it is a land that requires us to pray and realise that the water source and that of all life is the Almighty. It is a land where we feel a very real sense of dependence on God – the perfect place for Jews to play out their national mission.  Rabbi Jonny Roodyn is educational director at Jewish Futures Trust

Everything you wanted to know about your favourite Torah characters, and the ones you’ve never heard of...

BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND THIS WEEK:

SHEM

It’s hard being the child of a superstar; all the more so when your father singlehandedly gives humanity a hope, despite its otherwise total obliteration. For the 120 years prior to the flood, Noah seems to work on his ark in isolation; we only learn of the names of his children as they enter the ark as the rainwaters commence. Noah alone sends out the ravens and dove as they leave the ark; Hashem seals the Rainbow Covenant with Noah. Noah struggles to adjust to life back on dry land. Tragically, “Noah, man of the earth, degraded himself, and planted a vineyard. He became drunk and uncov-

ered himself inside the tent.” His son, Ham, “sees the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers”. Based on Noah’s subsequent cursing, our sages convey a tradition that Ham’s ‘seeing’ was a euphemism for either rape or castration.

SHEM’S SINGULAR ACT IN THE TORAH – SAVING WHAT WAS LEFT OF HIS DIGNITY – LED NOAH TO BLESS HIM

Noah saved the world; he now was drunk and exposed in a cruel way by his youngest son. Shem, joined to a lesser extent by his brother Yafet, place a garment over their father, taking care not to see his shame. We know little about Shem from the text; according to our sages he founded a yeshiva with his grandson Ever; he became a priest, later to be known as Malki-Tzedek, king of Shalem, with whom Abraham forged an alliance. Yet we are known as Semites – after Shem. His singular act in the Torah – sparing his father from further embarrassment, and saving what was left of his dignity – was enough for Noah to bless him that his brothers should be subservient to him. In our very exposed age when everything – physically, personal, spiritual – is revealed, perhaps this trait of Shem is one from which we can all learn.

Progressive Judaism

The Bible Says What?

Progressively Speaking How do we fight Israel’s prejudice against Progressive Jews?

Moses said: ‘And you shall tear down their altars, smash their monuments, cut down graven images of their gods’

BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER Our community prides itself on forming positive relationships with other faith communities in our society. Jewish groups have long been at the forefront of interfaith understanding projects. This makes it even more surprising to read the passage in Deuteronomy 12 in the Torah. Moses is giving his final address to the people and makes clear that, when they enter the land, they should destroy all the places where other nations serve their gods; break down their altars and erase their name from the place. It is startling to us to see such a commandment as we work today to build bridges with other faiths. What we have to remember is the importance of context. At the time of this commandment, Moses was not speaking about other faith communities in a peaceful society, but as enemies in a war. The words are harsh, but reflect

the need for positive relationships between faith groups to be built on mutual respect and understanding. This is less a commandment and more a prophecy. If people see each other as at war, destruction will happen. If different people meet each other looking for friendship, they then have a chance to find it. The Jewish people were coming in for a fight. Today, if we can approach other communities not with hate but with love, we can build something together rather than destroy. There are countless collaborations which prove the vital place interfaith work holds in our community. They are a testament to how religious communities in the vast majority see each other as brothers and sisters, not enemies. While that is the case, the destruction that the Torah speaks of will never happen.  Laura Janner-Klausner is senior rabbi to Reform Judaism

We wanted to demonstrate our outrage at Rabbi Dov Haiyun’s detention. We wanted to let Israel know the perversity of disallowing Israeli Jews to marry religiously as they choose. In the UK, Progressive Judaism is proud to be part of the continuity of Judaism, providing Jewish marriages. We must continue to work to ensure equality of religion in Israel. Israel is a model for so much good. One hopes it will have the humility to admit when it can learn from the diaspora.  Aaron Goldstein is rabbi of Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue

HOWARD GOLD BUILDING CONTRACTOR

HPS Dear Howard There’s a builder working on an adjacent property removing four chimney breasts. There has been no party wall agreement and they started work earlier this year. Two big cracks have appeared in my inside bedroom wall; I had this plastered through two years ago. I had the original plasterer back, who confirmed the cracks were due to next door’s building work. I spoke with the builder, who was not interested in doing anything. I now have a beautiful room with two cracks and am concerned about contacting my insurance company as this may affect my future premiums (I have legal cover

Jason Dear Jason First, I must say as a warning to all householders, any building works next door that link onto your own house should have a signed party wall agreement that protects you. You need to contact the property owner and not the builder. I would also speak with the local council, because removing four chimney breasts would also involve steel work, and that would have to go through the council and building control. I would also speak with your insurance and at least put them on notice if you don’t get anywhere with the owner, who is totally responsible for putting everything right.

CHANGE A LIFE, STARTING WITH YOUR OWN. NORWOOD HAS A RANGE OF REWARDING VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES TO SUIT EVERYONE. FIND OUT MORE AT NORWOOD.ORG.UK/VOLUNTEERING

Dear Dov There is an established process for calculating the costs for your move. I, or one of my colleagues, will survey your home well prior to the move and arrive at a total volume for your shipment. We will also take note of any items that may require special handling, such as long pieces of furniture or artwork or a piano etc. I appreciate that, at the time of survey, you may not yet have decided on a property in Israel. It will be necessary, therefore, to look closely at the proposed property and check whether or not we can easily access with a large truck or semi-trailer, or if we need to provide a smaller van to shuttle everything from the container to your new home. In addition, we would

look at the distance from the nearest parking space to your property and, within the property, the ease with which we might expect to deliver each item to its intended location. For example, if it is an upper floor flat, is there a large lift and could we use it to convey everything to your floor? In Israel, we work closely with partners with whom we have been working for 25 years or more. They are able to decide whether we will require a shuttle or an outside lift. If we have your new address in good time, they can assess the ease of delivery and whether or not any extra charges will apply. In most cases, there will not be extra charges, but we do like to plan and be sure well in advance so there are no surprises.

Cyclists pedal up for charity for the charity, which supports children and adults with learning disabilities. Simon Silver, who described the race as “maybe the biggest physical challenge he’s ever faced in his life”, said: “We all have a neighbour, friend, colleague that benefits directly from Kisharon’s amazing help”. Alain Stechler, Leslie Boobis and Larry Weiss, raised £6,947 for Shaare Zedek UK.

CYCLING A team of volunteers, staff, supporters and disabled riders from Norwood were among the 100,000 cyclists who took part in the Prudential Ride London event at the weekend. Taking on the 100-mile challenge from London through Surrey – and finishing in front of Buckingham Palace, residents from Norwood’s Ravenswood joined the race and cycled alongside staff and volunteers on tandem bikes – taking on the shorter Pru 46-mile route. Head of Challenges at Norwood, Ian Tate, said: “We’re very proud that a number of our tandem teams were also able to take part, it was a fantastic physical and fundraising effort by everyone involved.” Kisharon saw its 15 entrants – including David Greenberg and Zvi Noe raise £15,000

Nine mothers of Yeladenu pupils – together with the pre-school’s head – completed a mud run challenge and raised nearly £9,000 for the nursery. One of the ten, Helen Style (nursery head) said: “We managed to raise an incredible amount thanks to very generous donations from friends, family and shul members. We competed it in 81 minutes in searing heat, though do have some bruises and a few small injuries to show for our effort – but a big shout out to all those who took part.” Pictured (l-r); back: Laura Howard, Emma Stroud, Lea Helman, Nomi Tysman, Hela Shamash, front: Vered Lobel, Laura Levy, Emma Svanberg, Helen Style (Head).

Joe said: “I chose to raise money for outdoor playground equipment for Kisharon, having been inspired by spending several hours spent with some of the school’s pupils. It gave me an understanding of their needs and how much they would benefit from playground equipment.”

Golfers swing round for JBD GOLF DAY Nearly 50 golfers took part in the fifth annual Friends of Jewish Blind & Disabled Golf Day, at Hartsbourne Country Club. The 23 teams helped raise £30,000, with the quartet of Gary Field, Barry Langford, Clive Morley and Andrew Faber (pictured) winning the event. JBD Chief Executive Hazel Kaye said: “This was a really fabulous day, everyone united in the twin goals of enjoying a great round of golf in the sunshine, while raising as much money as possible to enable as many people as possible who are physically disabled or vision impaired to a life of independence, dignity and choice that is so easy for others to take

for granted. We are particularly grateful to Lloyd Botchin who, together with Tony Franks and Steve Crawford, organise this sell-out event each year.”
