Brown: We won’t abandon you Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown received a rapturous standing ovation after his keynote speech to Sunday’s Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) conference in which he said, “I cannot be silent” on the issue of anti-Semitism – “something fundamental to our future”, writes Jenni Frazer.

Speaking without notes to a packed audience at JW3, Labour’s last prime minister gave a pas-

sionate address in which he said there was a fight “for the soul of the Labour Party”, at whose core were the principles of fighting racism, inequality, sexism and anti-Semitism, “wherever and whenever they occur. It is about who we are”.

He went on: “Our conscience means we don’t just stand up for the rights of some people, some of the time, it means we stand up for the rights of all who are oppressed, all of the time.”

Labour’s promise to the Jewish community, he said, was clear: “We will not neglect you, we will not abandon you, we will not desert you.”

Brown noted anti-Semitism was growing among not only the “jack-booted” right, but also the “conspiracy theorist” left.

He also deplored the level of anti-Semitism expressed on the internet, which he said had risen by 2,000 percent in the past few years.

The former premier said it was “real and present and has to be dealt with now”. Such hatred “is being fed sedulously from the gutter”.

A future Labour government, he said, should establish an office for monitoring anti-Semitism, both in Britain and internationally. And he warned: “Our policy cannot be half-hearted or grudging. We have to move forward. It is time to say this wrong must be righted, this stain has to be removed, and it has to be done in the next few days.

“Fighting racism is not incompatible with our values, it’s at the heart of our values.”

approach to the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism, on which the party’s National Executive Committee ruled this week, and throw his weight behind full acceptance.

“I want to say to you very clearly today that the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism is something we should support unanimously, unequivocally and immediately,” he said.

He added: “The declaration is about this and this only: to condemn and root out, as they state, anti-Semitism, which ‘is a certain

perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews’. And this declaration is needed now, urgently. Not as some sort of abstract document of philosophy.”

Brown also noted that “history is not made by bystanders doing nothing”. But he concluded by saying his message was one of hope, something underlined by the JLM parliamentary chair, Luciana Berger. In thanking Brown she said his presence at the conference “has reminded us that we do not stand alone”.

MPs attack Corbyn for ‘vitriolic hate’ of Israel Jeremy Corbyn’s “vitriolic hatred of Israel” has blinded him to the company he keeps, a Jewish Labour MP has said, writes Jenni Frazer.

Dame Louise Ellman said it was “deeply distressing” that the Labour leader had “shared platforms with terrorists”.

The veteran MP for Liverpool Riverside was speaking at the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) conference in London as accusations of anti-Semitism continued to consume the party.

She said she was determined to continue working from within the party in the wake of MP Frank Field resigning the whip last week. But she said she feared deselection, particularly

“I think his world view and his vitriolic hatred of Israel, not a particular government of Israel, his vitriolic hatred of Israel, and I expect the rejection of the concept of Zionism itself, has blinded him to the company he is keeping.”

She added: “I think his

overwhelming hatred of Israel has been all-consuming and the rest either hasn’t been recognised or hasn’t seemed to matter and... suddenly that’s in the limelight means it can no longer be ignored.”

Dame Louise, along with fellow Jewish Labour MP Luciana Berger, told delegates they had faced abuse, some of it from party members.

Berger referred to a “summer of anti-Semitism within the Labour Party”, which has dominated the headlines almost daily, while Dame Louise said: “There’s always been some anti-Semitism on the left … but nothing like what’s happened over the past few years.”

Katz in new bid to be Hendon MP Jewish Labour Movement national vice-chair Mike Katz has announced his bid to be elected Hendon’s MP over Conservative incumbent Matthew Offord at the next general election.

Katz wrote on Twitter: “I’m standing to be @hendonlabour’s next MP again. We came close to dumping the right-wing, hard Brexitbacking Tory MP last year. Together we can finish the job and put Labour back in power!”

tion and bemoaned the party’s anti-Semitism row as a contributing factor.

Despite slashing the incumbent’s majority from 3,700 to 1,000, he said he had “fought to win” what was always going to a “tough challenge”, and that cutting the majority had been a “huge achievement”.

After the defeat, he reflected on the antiSemitism row’s role in the loss, saying: “It would be folly to ignore it as a factor.”

Hodge: Stay and fight Veteran Labour politician Dame Margaret Hodge has said she was “wrong” about her previous opinions of Ken Livingstone and Jeremy Corbyn, before her denunciation of the Labour leader as an anti-Semitic racist in July this year, writes Jenni Frazer.

Dame Margaret told Guardian journalist Jonathan Freedland at the JLM conference she had previously encountered Livingstone when she was Labour leader of Islington Council and he was at the Greater London Council.

“He would call me by my maiden name, Oppenheimer, and draw links with the rich South African Oppenheimers”, she said. They were no relation but she admitted she “didn’t appreciate” what Livingstone was doing by defining her in this way.

Asked what she had said to Corbyn, Dame Margaret insisted she had not sworn at him when she verbally attacked him but she was angry that “in the middle of one of the most crucial votes on Europe, Labour was concerning itself with whether to adopt the resolution on antiSemitism”.

meeting the night before the vote, she said, which Labour were losing, but “Corbyn didn’t bother to come”.

After she had spoken to him, she said, “he wouldn’t engage. All he said was, ‘I’m sorry you feel that way’, and walked off ”.

She cited the “anti-Semitic rant” at an NEC meeting by Pete Willsman and said for Corbyn to have sat and listened to it without intervening was “unconscionable”.

Dame Margaret previously defended Corbyn against charges of anti-Semitism but said she changed her view after the row about the controversial mural showing stereotypical “Jewish bankers”. Nobody,

she said, could look at such a mural and not conclude they were looking at anti-Semitism.

Asked by Freedland whether, if Labour passed the IHRA definition in full, with no caveats, the anti-Semitism issue would be over, Dame Margaret said: “I think the moment has passed. The problem is that Jeremy Corbyn is the problem.” Dame Margaret nevertheless made it clear she was prepared to stay and fight. “It’s my Labour Party,” she said, “and the party is bigger than Corbyn.”

She conceded she had not had a great deal to say or do about her Jewish identity in earlier years, despite being a typical Labour story — an immigrant, from Cairo, who fought for equality and social justice.

But she said her two sisters found distressing letters and diaries among family papers of relatives who had been killed in the Holocaust.

Her father famously warned her to keep a packed suitcase in the hall in case she again needed to be a Jew on the move. But she told Jewish News while she had not taken his advice literally – “I do have a packed case in my head”.

LANSMAN IN TWITTER ROW OVER LEARNING

Momentum founder Jon Lansman sought to set out red lines of good faith at the JLM) conference by telling his audience he had come “to express solidarity with all Jews in the Labour Party”, particularly Jewish women who had suffered anti-Semitism, writes Jenni Frazer.

But hours after his appearance he was involved in a bitter Twitter row with Progress director Richard Angell, who accused him of “throwing Jeremy Corbyn under a bus” because of a throwaway joke by the Momentum activist about the Labour leader’s “commitment to lifelong learning”.

Lansman was responding to questions about education and training in relation to anti-Semitism, which he said was the way to deal with the issue. Later, in what he said was a lighthearted comment, at which the audience laughed, he said “Jeremy has a longstanding commitment to lifelong learning”.

Lansman accused Angell of conflating the two remarks and presenting them as though he had suggested Corbyn required education on antiSemitism. In an angry tweet directed at Angell, he said: “This is what I said.

Your versions are lies, distortion

and fake news.”

During his panel appearance, Lansman said he had been very struck by the absence of Israeli flags at the first “Dayenu” demonstration held by the Jewish community. This, he believed, “showed there was no contradiction between fighting anti-Semitism and supporting Palestinian rights.

Fellow panellist Stephanie Lloyd, deputy director of Progress, shook her head as Lansman tried to explain why he had not initially condemned NEC member Pete Willsman over his remarks about “Jewish Trump fanatics” and questioned the background of the “70 rabbis” who had attacked anti-Semitism in the party.

Lloyd said: “I am not prepared to sit by while Labour slips into a cesspit of hate.”

Willsman back at top table An ally of Jeremy Corbyn who attacked some Jews as “Trump fanatics” in a heated meeting was re-elected to the Labour Party’s ruling body this week, despite left-wing grassroots group Momentum withdrawing its support.

Pete Willsman, who was recorded questioning 68 rabbis and right-wing Jews when discussing anti-Semitism earlier this summer, retained his place on Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in voting on Monday.

The Jewish Labour Movement criticised the outcome, tweeting: “We note the election of Willsman to the ruling body of the Labour Party. It does appear to be one rule for friends of Jeremy & one rule for others.

“Others remain under investigation while Willsman faces no further action for insulting community rabbis representing British Jews.”

Labour Friends of Israel director Jennifer Gerber said: “It is deplorable that Pete Willsman has been re-elected to the NEC and a terrible reflection on Labour’s commitment to tackling anti-Semitism.

“Jeremy Corbyn and Momentum should immediately call upon him not to take his seat, so his shameful remarks do not further taint the party’s already tattered reputation.”

Board of Deputies vice president Amanda Bowman said: “The election of Peter Willsman to Labour’s NEC following his reprehensible comments about Jews is deeply concerning.

“This has not been helped by Labour’s

appalling attitude to tackling prejudice, as evidenced by Jeremy Corbyn failing to rebuke Peter Willsman during his anti-Semitic tirade and general secretary Jennie Formby letting him off the hook. This has all taken place during a summer of equivocation and denial emanating from the Labour leadership.

“To get anywhere near turning the tide and proving that it can return to being an antiracist party, Labour’s NEC must adopt the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition with all its examples and then begin taking firm disciplinary action against all those who commit anti-Semitic acts and bring the party into disrepute by denying the problem.

“I believe we must accept and address the hurt felt by our Jewish neighbours. I have therefore called on our party to adopt the IHRA definition, including all its accompanying examples, into Labour’s rule book.

“I am urging Jeremy Corbyn to apologise for the pain and anguish he has caused the Jewish community for comments he has made and the company he has kept.

“And I will continue to urge our party to take further, immediate measures to root out the anti-Semitism in our midst.”

Before the NEC vote, Willsman appealed to party members to support his candidacy because he would defend Corbyn against “appalling and unjust attacks and smears”.

MPs in hate crime quiz A committee of MPs this week heard evidence about the “life journey” of an anti-Semitic hate crime, with members asking why there had been no increase in prosecutions.

The cross-party Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) grilled senior police officers, prosecutors and anti-Semitism experts, after efforts by Tulip Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn.

The parliamentarians considered the reporting of hate crimes, victim support, police decision-making up to and including charges, and the Crown Prosecution Service’s framework for determining whether the hate crime is considered by a court.

Siddiq, who chaired the meeting, said: “I am proud to be a member of the WEC, not

least because my diverse constituency is home to a thriving Jewish community.” She added she had spent “some time” pushing for the meeting.

“Unfortunately, there seems to be a clear disparity between the nationwide trend of increased anti-Semitism and the number of related prosecutions… I am delighted that we will have the opportunity to speak with experts to learn more.”

Addressing MPs were Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Rose of the Metropolitan Police, together with Chief Superintendent Dave Stringer, the Met’s hate crime lead, and Baljit Ubhey, director of prosecution policy and inclusion at the Crown Prosecution Service.

Momentum withdrew its support for Willsman in August. The group said his comments, which were seen as denying the problem of anti-Semitism in Labour, were “insensitive” to the Jewish community.

At a one-day conference organised by the Jewish Labour Movement on Sunday, Momentum founder Jon Lansman said he was “very unhappy with what Pete Willsman said

at the NEC on that occasion and on previous occasions”, adding that other NEC members had grown used to Willsman’s outbursts.

Lansman was among other Corbyn-backing NEC members re-elected to the influential body this week.

Both he and Willsman are Jewish and had defended Labour’s code of conduct on antiSemitism, unveiled at the last NEC meeting.

RYAN NO CONFIDENCE VOTE Labour Friends of Israel chair Joan Ryan, the MP for Enfield North, faces a vote of no confidence next week as party members in her constituency accuse her of stoking a backlash against Jeremy Corbyn over anti-Semitism.

Ryan, who regained the marginal seat in 2015, is accused of “smearing” Corbyn and “fuelling” and “inflaming” a “trial by media”. This week she wrote to local party members saying: “I joined this party 34 years ago to fight racism. Anti-Semitism is racism. Nothing will stop me standing up and speaking out. It is my duty to do so.”

It has been reported that the motion was submitted by a group of about 30, with Ryan – in an echo of the recent resignation letter from fellow Labour MP Frank Fields – saying her accusers were displaying “bullying,

vindictive behaviour”.

Ryan said the summer “has been dominated by shocking stories about anti-Semitism in our ranks,” adding: “I am ashamed of the response of our Party and its leadership. We find ourselves in a terrible position where the Jewish community no longer has confidence in Labour’s ability to recognise and deal with anti-Semitism.”

She said Corbyn should “apologise for the pain he has caused the Jewish community for comments he has made and the company he has kept”.

Left-wing grassroots group Momentum, which supports Corbyn, this week proposed changes to the party so sitting MPs could face open reselection. It said the move would help usher in “a new generation of MPs”.

Labour attacked over IHRA Labour’s governing body this week finally adopted the international definition of anti-Semitism, but added a caveat to ensure “freedom of expression on Israel or the rights of Palestinians”, something one Jewish group described as “driving a coach and horses” through the definition.

While Jewish community leaders welcomed the “long overdue” announcement that the National Executive Council (NEC) had adopted all 11 of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) examples of anti-Semitism – after having previously only accepted seven – they criticised the addition of a clause on free speech as well as Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn’s attempt to include a more detailed statement on allowing criticism of Israel.

This statement did not win enough support from members of the NEC, and community leaders have consistently argued that criticism of Israeli policy is not curtailed by IHRA. Simon Johnson, chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC), was scathing in his condemnation, saying: “The leader of the [Labour] Party attempted shamefully to undermine the entire IHRA definition.

“The ‘free speech caveat’ drives a coach and horses through the IHRA definition. It will do nothing to stop anti-Semitism within the party.... It is clearly more important to the Labour leader to protect the free speech of those who hate Israel than it is to protect the Jewish community from the real threats it faces.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn insisted to the NEC that the party was committed to “eradicating the social cancer of anti-Semitism” and expressed “deep concern and pain” over the loss of confidence among Jewish communities.

He said the full adoption was part

of a process of “rebuilding trust and as an act of solidarity with Jewish communities”.

Reacting to the NEC’s decision, Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said: “It is very long overdue and regrettable that Labour has wasted a whole summer trying to dictate to Jews what constitutes offence against us. However the adoption of the internationally-recognised definition by itself, can only be the beginning. Action is what matters.”

The Board said the adoption must be followed by concrete action, including against anti-Semites, resolving outstanding cases, tackling the culture of anti-Semitism and addressing Corbyn’s prior associations and actions.

The Community Security Trust welcomed the “belated” move, saying it “shows how unnecessary and damaging their previous refusal to adopt it was”. It added: “The definition does not prevent free speech unless that speech is anti-Semitic, so Labour’s ‘clarification’ is superfluous.”

Urging the party to “apply the definition consistency and vigorously”, the statement also calls on Labour to address “all the other concerns raised by the Jewish community leadership”.

Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Rabbi of the Movement for Reform Judaism took to Twitter to say the move was a “step in the right direction” before urging Labour “to move from talking to concrete action”.

The progressive leader, who was one of 69 rabbis who wrote to the NEC urging it to adopt the full definition, added that “of course freedom of expression about policies of Israel government is legitimate in a way that is similar to criticism levelled at any other country. ians alongside the national rights of Israelis”.

Labour Friends of Israel director Jennifer Gerber said: “It is appalling that the Labour party has once again ignored the view clearly and repeatedly stated by the Jewish community: that it should adopt the full IHRA definition without additions, omissions or caveats.

“A ‘freedom of expression on Israel’ clause is unnecessary and totally undermines the other examples the party has supposedly just adopted.

Labour appears determined to provide a safe space for anti-Semites. This decision is a sad reflection on Jeremy

Corbyn’s leadership of the party and the culture it has instilled.”

Campaign group Labour Against Antisemitism said “there can be no caveats, no conditions and no compromises with racism”. It added: “We are disappointed by the decision of Labour’s governing body to diminish the IHRA working definition of antiSemitism via the attachment of a ‘clarification’ that risks giving racists in the party a get out of jail card.”

During the meeting, Corbyn also sought to reassure members of the NEC that the IHRA definition could not be used to “undermine the rights of Palestinians or their supporters,

to identify and campaign about their history or experience of racism”.

A Labour Party spokesman said: “The NEC has adopted all of the IHRA examples of anti-Semitism, in addition to the IHRA definition, which Labour adopted in 2016, alongside a statement that ensures this will not in any way undermine freedom of expression on Israel or the rights of Palestinians.

“The NEC welcomed Jeremy Corbyn’s statement to the meeting about action against anti-Semitism, solidarity with the Jewish community and protection of Palestinian rights, as an important contribution to the consultation on Labour’s code of conduct.”

Met to probe hate file Young Jews quit Labour Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick says the force will examine a file of dozens of incidents of online anti-Semitism by Labour Party members to consider whether anything constitutes a hate crime.

The file, of unknown origin, was passed to the country’s top police chief by LBC Radio, and Dick said she would hand it to her experts to see whether crimes have been committed.

LBC announced the news on Tuesday, hours before Labour’s National Executive Committee was due to meet to discuss its new code of conduct on anti-Semitism.

Among the comments in the file is one reading: “We shall rid the Jews who are cancer on us all… Zionist extremist MP who hates civilised people about to get a good kicking.”

Simon Johnson asked on the show why cases had not been passed to the Met before now if they could constitute crimes. “If Jeremy Corbyn was a competent leader, he would have already dealt with these cases of antiSemitism months ago. He would have rid this party of the stain that affects them,” he added.

Young progressive Jews were quitting Labour this week after deciding the re-election of controversial National Executive Committee (NEC) member Peter Willsman was the final straw.

A day after Willsman was comfortably reelected to the party’s ruling body, at least four left-wing Jews resigned their membership, in yet another sign of deteriorating relations between the party and the Jewish community.

Among those leaving was Amos Schonfield, who represents Yachad at the Board of Deputies. He said being a Jewish member of Labour was now “a badge of shame”.

Others leaving included Schonfield’s fellow Yachad activist Noah Libson, trainee lawyer Ella Taylor and trainee social worker Joe Grabiner.

Willsman apologised after being recorded at Labour’s last NEC meeting ranting about Jews who were “Trump fanatics” and demanding 70 rabbis produce “evidence of widespread anti-Semitism in the Labour Party”. Left-wing

grassroots group Momentum subsequently withdrew its support for him.

Tweeting about his decision to leave, Schonfield said: “Being a Jewish member of @UKLabour was once a source of pride for me, but as with many in my position it is now a badge of shame. The election of Pete Willsman, with 70,000-plus votes, is the end for me.”

Taylor said she had been “trolled, marginalised, undermined and mocked” on social media for being Jewish, adding: “It is not just a ‘fringe’ on the left. It is the leadership, the national executive and part of the wider issue on the left.”

Libson said: “Peter Willsman’s re-election, coupled with reflecting over the summer, has made me think being a Labour member isn’t compatible with being a proud Jew.” Grabiner said: “In deciding if (and when) to leave the Labour Party, I told myself I’d wait to see if Willsman was re-elected to the NEC. He was. I’m out.”

John McDonnell this week said the antiSemitism crisis had been “an absolute nightmare” but warned it may not be possible to reach a consensus over the Labour Party’s final code of conduct.

The shadow chancellor spoke exclusively to Jewish News hours after the party’s governing body finally adopted all 11 examples accompanying the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antiSemitism, reversing its decision to exclude some following a summer of anger.

But a proposal from Jeremy Corbyn for it to be made explicit in the party’s code of conduct that it is acceptable to call ‘the circumstances around Israel’s foundation racist’ provoked fresh anger. Although the Labour leader lacked the requisite support to push the issue to a vote at Tuesday’s National Executive Committee (NEC), McDonnell said he backed the proposal.

He added: “I quite like the extra text because it was absolutely explicit and what I heard during the period there was a consultation [was that] people hadn’t got that message so they needed to have it more explicit. It is anti-Semitic to oppose a Jewish state. But it is not anti-Semitic to call a state racist. I call the British state racist on a regular basis.”

The NEC has now launched a new consultation on the code of conduct and McDonnell said he could not give guarantees there would not be any future attempts to add Corbyn’s text because he is not part of the NEC. While he acknowledged the mainstream community along with countless councils and countries did not see the need to additions to protect freedom of speech, he added: “There are a number who do think it is and we’ve got to listen to them and try to build consensus. We might not be able to, but let’s try.”

McDonnell has spoken out about the time it has taken to deal with the IHRA row and personally backed adoption of all the examples on the eve of the U-turn – but he refused to apportion blame to his close friend Corbyn or those in his team. “All of us are involved,” he said, admitting he personally should have spoken out much earlier on IHRA. As Labour Friends of Israel chair Joan Ryan faces a vote of no confidence from her local party over her outspoken criticism of Corbyn on anti-Semitism, with fears it could be a step towards deselection moves, McDonnell warned against any such action against those fighting the scourge. “That cannot be grounds for deselection,” he said. “These people are speaking

out on anti-Semitism and are doing it with the best of hearts. They’ve got to be supported.”

He was “saddened” to hear more young Jews had abandoned the party following the re-election of Peter Willsman, inviting them to contact him directly as part of dialogue he wanted to see with the community.

But he gave short shrift to the idea of an apology from Corbyn for his repeated associations with those with anti-Semitic views, including terror group Hamas.

Former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks has made clear he would not sit down with Corbyn until he has done more to address anti-Semitism, while the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council have demanded he “acknowledge his failings and offer a heartfelt apology” as part of a raft of measures to build bridges.

But McDonnell said: “We‘re all bigger than this now. We’ve all just got to get around a table.”

On Willsman, who had ranted about never having seen anti-Semitism in the party, he said the veteran activist had apologised. “I don’t think it is enough and that’s why I’m saying it’s important we engage with him,” he added. “The fact he had recused himself for a disputes panel meeting this week suggested “he’d learnt a bit of a lesson and needed to go further”.

But when it was put to McDonnell he could send out a message of zero tolerance by saying he was uncomfortable with Willsman remaining on the governing body, he said only: “The democratic principles of our party override everything. With Pete Willsman, I’ve given him the benefit that he didn’t know what he was doing.”

‘It’s not anti-Semitic to call Jewish News: You’ve said Labour should have dealt far more quickly with the row over IHRA. How do you expect the Jewish community to support a party that so blatantly ignores its concerns on anti-Semitism?

John McDonnell: We’ve got to engage thoroughly in discussions, an open-door policy, and make sure we can start that dialogue up.

It’s been an absolute nightmare. But, and I know this might sound difficult to some people, in some ways being forced into soul-searching has done us some good. So I’m looking for something positive out of this. What I think will be positive is an ongoing – because this doesn’t end with one decision about one set of examples – process, which will be educational for everyone.

JN: Can you understand why many Jews feel there’s no place for them now in Labour?

JM: Yes, I can understand the concerns that have been expressed. I don’t want to aggravate people, but some of the expressions that have been made don’t bear any reality to what has been going on either, and maybe that’s because we haven’t been clear enough about understanding it and our own depth of empathy. I completely understand how people feel. Jonathan Freedland put it in a good article in The Guardian about empathy... that’s what we’ve got to show now on a much greater

scale than we have managed in the past.

JN: Who is responsible for getting the party into such a mess over IHRA? Was it down to the leader or those around him?

JM: No, I think it was everybody. All of us were involved. There was a lack of understanding that it needed time to bring people up to speed on this issue. For example, I hadn’t read before the submission to Congress of Kenneth Stern, who was involved in drafting the definition, and during that period I did. I’m trying to move beyond blame because I don’t think that’s productive. I actually think the soul-searching has happened, it’s been effective, and now we want a process of engagement, dialogue and discussion, and hopefully agreement and consensus. It’s important to get the words right, but there’s stuff on the ground going on that we’ve got to tackle as well. I’m really fearful about what’s happening, the insecurity that people have. We should not live in a society where pupils go to Jewish schools and they have to have security; we shouldn’t live in a society where gravestones are daubed with swastikas. I’m worried as well about the rise of the far-right, not just in this country, but across Europe.

JN: Tuesday, though, was an opportunity to put to bed the IHRA issue, but there’s huge

concern that the extra text Jeremy Corbyn put forward has exacerbated the situation.

Did you support that?

JM: Yes I did. Jeremy wanted absolute clarity that it did not impose any restrictions on freedom of speech other than what you would expect to do – to use appropriate language and you can’t use it in a way that attacks Jewish people. There will be a detailed consultation, which I hope everyone gets involved in, on the code of conduct, because that will in practice be how you interpret it.

JN: Whenever the community has felt, in recent years, that things couldn’t get any worse, they have done. Can you give a guarantee that there won’t be attempts to put Jeremy’s extra text into the code of conduct?

JM: I can’t give guarantees because I’m not in control of the process, but my understanding is the NEC will undertake a consultation. I have not seen the details of how that will be done, or the timescales, but my advice is to do it promptly, as openly as we possibly can and, when you come to your conclusions, be open and give people time to consider your conclusions. They may well say in the code of conduct some commitments around freedom of expression. I think we’re already there but, as I say, let’s have that debate, let’s not close down the conversation.

JN: You say you think those protections are already there, so will you take the opportunity today to say that you wouldn’t like to see Jeremy’s extra text added?

JM: No. I quite like the extra text, because it was absolutely explicit. From what I heard during the period in which there was some consultation going on, people hadn’t got the message, so they needed to have it more explicitly, and I think that’s what he tried to do. The wording said “the circumstances around the founding of the state of Israel”. It is anti-Semitic to oppose a Jewish state, of course it is. But it is not anti-Semitic to call a state racist. I call the British state racist on a regular basis [because] of the way it acts. The argument that people put forward is that there were racist acts that took place, dispossession and things like that. That’s part of the debate. Again, if people come back and say those form of words weren’t right or wasn’t appropriate, then we’ll listen to them.

JN: You know the position of the mainstream Jewish community. They’re not going to suddenly come to the conclusion that extra additions are required. Numerous councils, countries, the CPS, none think it is needed…

JM: There’s a number who do think it is and we’ve got to listen to them and see whether we can build consensus. We might not be able to, but let’s at least try. We’ve got to try to

a state racist’ JN: Many people will read this and wonder how on earth Labour can find an accommodation with the community if you’re taking that position on Israel.

JM: That means we have to have a proper debate to explain the position. What we’re saying is it’s anti-Semitic to oppose a Jewish state, of course it is, but it is not anti-Semitic to be able to criticise the role of that state at times, just as I criticise this state. As I say, there are a large numbers of people in my constituency who are detained in a detention centre unnecessarily. It’s interesting that most of them are black. As we saw in the ‘hostile environment’ policies of this government, that was a racist state in action.

JN: The Birkenhead CLP discussed and passed a motion that rejected Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) training because of ‘possible links to ISIS’. Does that not suggest a deep cultural problem in the Labour Party?

JM: I’ve not seen the motion. I find it bizarre that anyone could link JLM and ISIS. It’s extraordinary and laughable. I’ll take that

up and I’ll engage in the debate with the constituency. I’ve worked with the JLM, met them on a regular basis and done everything I can to cooperate. If an individual constituency party has put a motion like that forward, it just emphasises the need for education.

Let me have a look at the resolution itself and ask the constituency what’s happened there, and I’ll ask JLM as well.

JN: Four young members of the community resigned their membership this week after Pete Willsman was re-elected to the NEC. Amos Schonfeld, who works for an organisation called Yachad, a left-wing Jewish group that’s very critical of Israeli Government policy, tweeted: “Being a Jewish member of Labour was once a source of pride for me but, as with many in my position, it is now a badge of shame. The election of Pete Willsman to the NEC is the end for me.” Does that make you feel ashamed?

JM: We’re a democracy, he got re-elected. He’s apologised. I don’t think that goes far enough.

I think he needs to understand the hurt he’s caused as a result of his statements. And I think what the NEC has talked about for him and others, what should go on, and if he persists in those attitudes I think he should be standing down. But what I’m hoping is he’s learned a Continued on page 10

And again, for that young person who’s stood down, I say look, we need you back in the party because we need people like this raising these issues, the level of debate and the level of understanding. When Pete Willsman said that – and I don’t know him that well – I don’t think he even understood what he was saying, or the implications of it.

He does now. Maybe he needs to learn the lesson more effectively.

JN: Did you feel ashamed when you hear that from a young Labour Party member?

JM: I feel really saddened. I ask him to contact me because I want to get him back.

JN: A lot of people will be wondering how we can have a party and a leadership who can maintain that Labour has a problem with anti-Semitism while having a person on the governing body who has openly and angrily said he has never seen any anti-Semitism and suggested rabbis and others have made it up?

JM: I’ve heard this said before, in meetings where people have said ‘I’ve never seen any anti-Semitism’. I go back to the Irish issue, 20 or 30 years ago. I’ve sat in meetings where people have been cracking Irish jokes in front of me not realising they’re racist. We’re at that stage in terms of anti-Semitism within Labour and, I have to say as well, in the wider community. So again, I’m looking for positives from

this, which is that people will start learning – and the programmes of education within Labour have got to be absolutely first-class.

We need to involve people in developing that, and JLM are one of those I’d like to mobilise to ensure we do that. That will raise the level of understanding. If you look at what we did with anti-Irish racism, we’ve eradicated that element, and it’s what we’ve got to do here.

JN: You could send out a really strong message today by saying you’re uncomfortable with Pete Willsman being on your governing body.

JM: The democratic principles of our party override everything as far as I’m concerned.

With Pete Willsman, I’ve given him the benefit that he didn’t understand what he was doing.

JN: There’s been no contrition at all. He suddenly discovered the day after he made the comment that he had seen anti-Semitism.

JM: He did actually apologise. I don’t think that was enough and that’s why I’m saying its important now we engage with him so he thoroughly understands what he’s done.

I come from a tradition, as you do; we believe that people can express remorse and move on and sometimes you need the generosity of spirit for that to happen. I’m willing to give him that and I hope the Jewish community is. But we will see from future performance if he does it, further action will need to be taken.

JN: You don’t think he should be suspended or kept out of disciplinary cases from now on?

JM: I understand he removed himself from that debate and that showed an understanding of what he has done and he needs to go further.

JN: You’ve suggested Lord Sacks misunderstood the leader. A lot of people in the Jewish community will feel perhaps you’ve misunderstood where the Jewish community is coming from on this. Can you understand that the Jewish community would be concerned about having a prime minister who has repeatedly shared platforms and endorsed in various ways people who are not just pro-Palestinian but are anti-Semitic in their positions? They want our readers dead.

JM: Lord Sacks was brutally honest and I thanked him for that. But he said anti-Semitism is blaming Israel for everything that’s happening in the Middle East. Jeremy hasn’t done that and neither have I. Only a couple of years ago, I was demonstrating when the Saudi king came here. He also said there had been support for Hamas and Hezbollah.

Jeremy has not expressed support for Hamas and Hezbollah and I certainly haven’t either.

JC: He said they were a force for social justice.

JM: He’s tried to force them to get around the table to support peace. He’s condemned their violence, he’s never supported violence in his life. Those are the issues Jonathan Sacks raised and a couple of others. I said I think he’d got that wrong but come and see us.

It’s an open door, and he said, well I won’t come and see you until Jeremy apologises.

We’re all bigger than this now.

JN: You owned in a very personal way some of the language you expressed in the past on the IRA and you apologised for that. So when we’re talking about sharing a platform with antiSemites, we’re not talking about people who are just supportive of the Palestinian cause.

Do you think it might be time for an apology?

JM: You have to look at why he was sharing platforms. It was not to endorse them, it was to try and engage with them. Jeremy has never endorsed violence, he’s never endorsed antiSemitism at all.

JC: Are you comfortable as president of the Labour Representation Committee, which says the Ken Livingstone case was a ‘witch hunt’?

JM: I’m not going to disassociate myself from an organisation I founded because they disagree with me or I disagree with them on these particular issues, because on most issues I agree with them and they have been a beneficial force in the Labour Party and in other policy areas. I’ve made my position clear, I completely disagree if I’m honest.

JN: As a potential chancellor, would you give a guarantee you’d continue funding levels for Jewish security in this country and the Lessons from Auschwitz project?

JM: When we go into government, we will review our expenditure. We wouldn’t want to do anything in terms of reduction of HMD [Holocaust Memorial Day]. In fact, I want to make sure it’s extended and widened as broadly as we can.

CHARITIES LAUNCH NEW YEAR APPEALS Two of the community’s main charities have launched their Rosh Hashanah appeals. JNF UK has partnered with Israeli charity Building Hope for a new year appeal to rebuild homes and help needy families in Kiryat Gat and Kiryat Malachi, two of the most deprived towns in the region. Meanwhile, Jewish Care’s appeal – which has set a target of £200,000 – focuses on its Direct Helpline, which receives 15,000 calls a year.

YACHAD CRITICISES ACTIVISTS’ ARREST Yachad has criticised the arrest of Israeli anti-settlement activists as a “worrying sign of Israel’s crackdown on dissenting voices”.

The executive director of Breaking the Silence, Avner Gvaryahu, was detained by Israeli Border Police last week along with two other members of the group, the communications director Achiya Shatz and human rights attorney Michael Sfard. All three were detained next to a settlement near Hebron.

Student’s drug death mystery The family of a Jewish student who died after travelling to Colombia and taking a hallucinogenic substance during a shamanic ritual has said the four-year wait for a coroner’s hearing had made them “relive a nightmare”.

Henry Miller, a Bristol student, travelled to South America in April 2014 and took ayahuasca, or yage, as part of a tribal rainforest ceremony, but fell ill and died.

The shaman and his son later dumped his body by a roadside.

“My poor brother, sister-in-law and nephew have had to re-live the nightmare again.”

Henry had been due to start his university course in Brighton when he returned from his travels. His family described him as “always the life and soul of the party, never in trouble”.

At the time of his nephew’s death, Gary urged young people to “be careful what you do,” adding: “The substance

Jewish charity warns of coeliac ‘stigma’ A Jewish charity says there is a “stigma” surrounding coeliac disease in the community, after a national charity warned there were still half-a-million people in the UK who are undiagnosed.

The serious auto-immune disease is caused by a reaction to gluten, found in wheat, barley and rye. It affects roughly one in 100 people, and is common among Jews with Ashkenazi heritage.

Crohn’s Colitis Relief (CCR), based in Stamford Hill, welcomed figures last week from Coeliac UK, which showed

there had been a 30 percent increase in clinical diagnosis, but recognised many Jews still hadn’t come forward.

“More can be done, especially among the more Orthodox communities, because the issue of stigma plays a big role when parents or patients determine whether to be open about the disease,” said Levi Schapiro of CCR. CCR found medical professionals sometimes misdiagnosed patients as having Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Schapiro added. “It is critically

Gay pride at Chief’s new tolerance guide The Chief Rabbi and a Jewish LGBT+ charity have jointly launched an unprecedented guide to protect LGBT+ pupils from bullying in school, in a move warmly welcomed

by Europe’s biggest Jewish school, JFS. In a historic step, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has spent almost a year working with LGBT+ umbrella group KeshetUK to draft the 33-page document, urging tolerance towards young Jews discovering their sexual and gender identity.

It follows a landmark report last year from human rights group Stonewall, which found that half of all LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) pupils are bullied at school, with those who identify as a different gender particu-

larly at risk.

Stonewall found that 84 percent of transgender pupils self-harm and 45 percent have tried to take their own life, in some cases succeeding. More than one in five lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils did likewise.

The new document, called The Wellbeing of LGBT+ Pupils: A Guide for Orthodox Jewish Schools, is available to read on the website of the Office of the Chief Rabbi, who described it as “essential” in his introductory statement.

Some Orthodox Jews in Britain and elsewhere continue to think those who identify as non-heterosexual or who do not identify with their gender of birth are making “lifestyle choices” that require “conversion”.

In his groundbreaking guide, which will be read with interest by Orthodox communities around the world, the Chief Rabbi said: “There is a need for authoritative guidance, which recognises the reality that there are young LGBT+ students in our schools to whom we have a duty of care.”

KeshetUK praised the Chief Rabbi for his stance, saying anti-LGBT+ bullying is “used to aggressively enforce gender

stereotypes and limit young people’s academic, career and personal life aspirations… It doesn’t have to be this way.”

I grew up in a world where sexuality wasn’t mentioned in Jewish schools. I wasn’t able to share my sexuality with anyone while at school due to fear of discrimination and bullying.

The only context in which I had ever heard the word ‘gay’ was when it was being said as an insult or describing something forbidden.

As such, I spent many years feeling lonely and isolated in schools that just didn’t know how to respond to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT+) Jews or to homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying.

The collective stigma and burden of this unchangeable part of my identity – coupled with a lack of support from respectable figures in authority – ended up being too much to carry.

In the hope I could one day be part of the community I loved so much, I endured three years of so-called conversion therapy, pouring my efforts into trying to change this negative perception of my sexuality – as was the common ‘treatment’ for people like me at the time.

It didn’t change my sexuality and ended up leaving me feeling depressed and trapped in a life with no future to look forward to.

Over time, through the support of family, friends and rabbis in the community, I have been able to heal and finally open up about my sexuality and demonstrate my commitment to being part of the Jewish community.

As we approach the High Holy Days, the Chief Rabbi has written LGBT+ Jews in the book of life; I pray this guide will be the beginning of LGBT+ Jews feeling actively part of our community, in a world in which people can be open about who they are and who they love, without shame or fear of rejection.

A Jewish helping hand for

“BANANA!” In a field in not-so-rural England, a pair of harried twentysomethings are shepherding a group of teenagers through a game of Fruit Salad. It’s one of the many rituals, from death-defying hikes to never-ending “wide games” and ear-bleeding renditions of Wonderwall, reenacted by the thousands of young Jews during their annual summer camp pilgrimage. The thing is, this isn’t Jewish summer camp – though you’d be forgiven for thinking it was.

Learning the language is part of the day

Two weeks ago, Our Second Home (OSH) welcomed its first set of happy campers to Borehamwood for five days of workshops, sports and the occasional Fruit Salad. The two dozen 14-18 year-olds hailed from almost as many countries, among them Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Albania, Egypt and Vietnam, and had been in the UK in sheltered accommodation, foster care and with relatives for between a few months and several years.

They had two things in common. First, given they came to the UK unaccompanied, all were boys. Second, all were refugees.

The UN Refugee Agency recently reported more than half the world’s 25 million refugees are under 18. So far, and for good reason, the global response has been to refugees’ basic needs: legal aid, education, housing.

But about a year ago, OSH’s founder Amos Schonfield found himself wondering, “What’s that next step? How can we help them not just to survive in their new environment, but to thrive?” Hence, OSH was born.

Schonfield concedes the idea of a summer camp for refugees isn’t original. It’s what Jewish summer camps originally were: “a stable base for people in flux”, a place to be Jewish together, a home from home.

newest arrivals. “When people talk about this being the biggest refugee crisis since World War II, that’s coded language for you and me,” says Schonfield. “It’s incumbent upon us as British Jews to use our refugee experience to alleviate others’”.

It’s no coincidence, he says, that Help Refugees, The Bike Project and Safe Passage each has “a large dollop of Jewishness”; OSH gets its own from Masorti Judaism, which helped to launch the project. But Schonfield’s humanitarianism isn’t just characteristically Jewish. His grandfather was Rabbi Dr Solomon Schonfeld, thought to have secured 3,500 European Jews refuge in Britain from the Holocaust. It runs in his blood.

I join Schonfield and his volunteer team, a mix of Noamniks, Calaisniks (one of whom, a charming Glaswegian named Chris, two boys will recognise from the Jungle) and a smattering in-between, on pre-camp, where they’re discussing terminology.

Just as Jewish youth movements provide “a space in which to mediate between your Britishness and your Jewishness”, Schonfield wants to make participants feel at home, whether by buying a kilo of Ethiopian berbere spice from a King’s Cross cornershop, or by allowing participants to keep their phones (“the gateway to their whole life”), while helping them to acculturate to life in Britain.

The major way OSH is doing the latter is by making English the main language. A minor way is by renaming the site after London landmarks; though this has presented the question of whether “Tower of London”, given its incarceratory connotations, is an appropriate name for a dorm room. The team go for “London Eye” instead. Hiding in plain sight, of course, is the word “camp”.

Yet for all the talk of triggering and trauma, the busload of boys that rolls up the following day is as boisterous as any; their arrival heralded by a cacophony of laughter, Arabic, and music blasting from phone speakers.

Once you’ve led a campful of reluctant Jewish teenagers, such enthusiasm seems miraculous. Then again, this is the most fun many of the boys have had in a while.

Take Birhan, a 17-year-old Ethiopian whose year-long journey to the UK included three months in a Bulgarian prison. Having arrived in February and with college not starting until September, his one friend is his brother, whom he lives with.

Between appointments with his solicitor, social worker and the Home Office, he leaves the house only on his brother’s days off. The last was a couple of weeks ago, when they took a day trip to Brighton: “I missed the sea.” * A longer version of this feature is online at jewishnews.co.uk

Honey, we got a hechsher!

A beekeeping member of Borehamwood shul has become the first Brit to be granted a hechsher for honey by the London Beth Din – and just in time for Rosh Hashanah.

Speaking to Jewish News, Ian Shenker, 67, recalled how he was sitting outside Orli’s, a famous bagel bakery, when he wondered whether they’d like to buy his honey.

Inquiring inside, he was referred to the KLBD logo and told he needed a hechsher.

“I said ‘honey’s kosher,’ but they were insistent that all their produce had to have a hechsher,” said the retired teacher and foster parent, who has kept bees for 35 years.

“I phoned KLBD and spoke to a rabbi, but he said it costs money. I said I’m only a small beekeeper, and he said he’d see what he could do. The next day I had a call saying Rabbi Conway, the KLBD head honcho, wanted to come and see me.”

Conway, director of KLBD, the kosher certification agency of the London Beth Din, has a personal fascination with honey bees and halacha and arranged to meet Shenker, who has managed to pursue his hobby despite being allergic to bee stings “He grilled me for two hours as I took him through the process,” Shenker said.

“He was very knowledgeable and asked all sorts of questions, like do I feed them with

syrup, how do I make sure the syrup doesn’t get mistaken for honey, that kind of thing.

“At the end, he said he was happy to grant me a hechsher.”

The delighted Shenker took ten jars of his

newly-certificated honey to Just Kosher, and soon had a call from the owner asking for more. “They told me they’d sold six in as many days,” says Shenker. “I only have two hives, so I’ve not got much left.”

Shenker, who works with a friend as part of Barnet Bee Keeping Association, said this year’s unusual weather had been “crazy”, but the threats to bees in 2018 added a huge importance to his work. Bees, he said, were now “almost protected”. Shenker is now the first United Synagogue member to be granted a kosher certificate for honey.

Rabbi Conway said he had been impressed

by Shenker’s work at ‘In the Wood Honey’ and it had been a pleasure to meet him as “our very own United Synagogue beekeeper”.

“I learned some fascinating new details about beekeeping and was delighted to be able to grant KLBD kosher certification just in time for Rosh Hashanah,” he added.

Jews traditionally begin the Jewish New Year meal by dipping the challah (bread) into honey, followed with an apple dipped in honey, then a short prayer asking for renewal and a “sweet” year.

Conway said the custom of eating honey on Rosh Hashanah goes back many hundreds of years and, according to some sources, refers specifically to the honey made by bees, rather than something like honey made from dates.

“Bees’ honey is a unique and fascinating substance and its production is truly one of the wonders of the world,” he added.

“To produce one pound of honey, the average bee has to visit two million flowers and travel a distance equivalent to twice around the earth.”

Hailing crime fighting heroes Labour MP Luciana Berger has been nominated for a prestigious national award for those “standing up to hate crimes” after her passionate speech in the House of Commons in which she revealed the anti-Semitic abuse she had received.

The member for Liverpool Wavertree was nominated in the category for upstanding parliamentarian, named in honour of the late Jo Cox MP, ahead of the upcoming No2H8 Crime Awards next Thursday, which Jewish News proudly sponsors.

“Her consistent and strong stance has meant she has had to face horrific online abuse,” said the judges. “Luciana’s response to her attackers has been to act against them through the criminal justice system.” The MP was also praised for her fight for women’s rights and mental health.

Other politicians nominated include Stella Creasy MP, Paula Sherriff MP and Scottish parliamentarian Anas Sarwar, a prominent supporter of Tell MAMA, the charity charged with monitoring Islamophobia in the UK. Tell MAMA founder Fiyaz Mughal, one of the driving forces behind the awards with former Community Security Trust (CST) chief executive Richard Benson, praised the quality and contributions of nominees.

Other nominees include police officers Tony Forsyth, of the Met Police Hate Crime Hub, Rukhsana Bashir, who covers hate crime in Northamptonshire, David Willetts, a beat

with learning difficulties felt most at risk of hate crime on public transport and commissioned a media company to create two films to be shown on the bus and metro system.

Also nominated are Redbridge’s Yusuf Patel, a school educator who teaches children about anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim hatred, and neuro-diversity advocate Sienna Castellon, who is autistic, dyslexic and dyspraxic and has ADHD. One of the bravest nominees is Ahmad Nawaz, a 17-year-old boy seriously injured by the Taliban in the Peshawar school attack in Pakistan in 2014, when 150 fellow students were killed, among them his younger brothers.

He was seriously injured and airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

He made a fresh start in a local school and decided to counter the attackers’ aim, which was to prevent children being educated.

He began an initiative to promote education and its importance, and has been visiting schools, colleges and universities across the UK, including Eton and Cambridge University, providing a counter-extremism narrative, and encouraging youngsters like him to be positive change-makers.

McGowan, 44, a force behind the #MeToo movement, told Good Morning Britain: “I’ve heard that same argument for what, 5,000 million years now.

“MeToo is not just for women. I’ve had so many men share their stories of abuse with men… Let people breathe and have their voice.”

And she added: “If I feel like walking down the street naked, nobody has the right to rape me…. Everybody has a sovereign right to their body.”

Lipman, while approving of the progress that has been made in empowering victims of abuse to come forward, had said: “Young female pop stars today, for example, are saying: ‘It’s my body, and

I’m empowered to show it to you.’

“But then: ‘Don’t touch it, don’t come near it, don’t flirt with it.’ And that is a bit of a shame because flirting is some of the best fun you’ve ever had in your life.”

“The Holocaust teaches us and the millions who will visit the memorial that whatever the hatred, it starts with a concept of ‘them and us’ and depends on demonisation to survive. There is no ‘other’, there is only ‘us’”, she said.

She added the “memorial must stand next to the seat of power, in the shadow of Parliament. It must be seen every day by all of us”.

Balls said: “What better way to show we will not tolerate hatred than our new Holocaust Memorial, right next to our Parliament. There is no location more fitting to honour the victims of one of humanity’s greatest tragedies than sideby-side with one of humanity’s oldest democracies.

“There is no better gift we can pass to future generations than the knowledge of where hatred, unchecked, can lead.”

A Holocaust survivor launched a scathing attack on the Labour Party just moments after its shadow foreign secretary addressed the opening of the Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre exhibition.

Author Agnes Grunwald-Spier grabbed the microphone after speeches by James Brokenshire, Ed Balls, Lord Pickles and Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornbury and told a stunned audience: “I am bitterly disappointed by what has happened in the Labour Party... The party has to do something about anti-Semitism, otherwise this memorial is a waste of money.”

She later told Jewish News: “I was incensed that [Ms Thornberry] came, because I have seen her defend what [Labour leader Jeremy] Corbyn said and it was sheer hypocrisy for her to stand here today and say what she said.”

Speaking after the event, Thornberry told Jewish News: “I fully understand the anger that is widely felt across the Jewish community, and I have heard it first-hand for myself not just today but on numerous occasions in recent months. That places an obligation on all of us within the Labour Party to root out the anti-Semitism which has caused that justifiable anger.

Abbas anger at £231m fund cut The US decision to end funding for the United Nations agency that helps Palestinian refugees and their descendants is “an attack on the rights of the Palestinian people,” a spokesman for president Mahmoud Abbas has said.

Nabil Abu Rudeneh this week claimed the move “does not serve peace but rather strengthens terrorism in the region”.

He added the Palestinian leadership was considering an appeal to the UN Security Council to confront the American stance, which he said was just the latest hostile act of the Trump administration after it recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moved its embassy there.

“Whatever the size of the conspiracies aimed at liquidating the Palestinian cause, this will only increase the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and its leadership.”

The US supplies nearly 30 percent of the total budget of the UN Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, and had been demanding it carry out significant reforms to what it called an “irredeemably flawed operation”.

The decision cuts nearly £231million of planned support.

Alistair Burt, said: “The UK remains a firmly committed supporter of UNRWA, and Palestinian refugees across the Middle East, and we will do everything we can to maintain continuity of essential services at this time.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn took to Twitter to criticise the decision, saying it was “shameful for the US to end its funding for UNRWA”, which he described as “a vital UN refugee agency”.

Corbyn added: “The UK must help to fill the gap by boosting its contributions. Support for Palestinian refugees is a vital commitment until there is a just and viable settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict.”

Del Rey bows to boycott Singer Lana Del Rey has cancelled her planned performance at an Israeli music festival after pressure from Palestinian boycott activists.

In a Twitter message, Del Rey said she is delaying “until a time when I can schedule visits for both my Israeli and Palestinian fans”.

Lieberman said McCain “suffered through Shabbat” in

Let’s take pride Few will underestimate the scale and impact of the Chief Rabbi’s new guidance to promote the wellbeing of LGBT+ pupils in Jewish Orthodox schools.

Such an initiative has never been attempted anywhere, and for good reason. You need only think of the furore kicked up around seemingly innocuous comments made by Senior Rabbi Joseph Dweck of the S&P Sephardi Community last year, or the abusive messages targeted at JW3 for profiling the contribution of gay Jews, to understand why.

Let’s be clear: Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis could have shied away from full involvement in this guide. He could have said something bland and left it more or less alone. But he didn’t.

Alongside KeshetUK, he recognised the hurt felt daily by young Jews who are bullied and isolated at school, whether that’s because they identify differently, or because they have LGBT+ parents. These children are left to self-harm or worse by an educational establishment woefully ill-equipped to deal with a child’s development in terms of sexual and gender identity in an Orthodox Jewish setting.

That’s the tragedy he chose not to ignore.

By biting the bullet no one else wanted to bite, the Chief Rabbi may save lives by recognising those many choose to shun. He should be applauded.

No, he is not suddenly saying that after thousands of years Judaism is now fine with the idea of non-heterosexual relations or gender fluidity, nor is he preaching that we should all promote the LGBT+ lifestyle.

He is saying that Jews, like all people, come in different forms. They can be gay, bisexual, straight, or anywhere in between, and some relate better to a different gender. He’s saying: Let’s support them. Let’s stamp out bullying.

Let’s talk about it. When you think about it, it’s not revolutionary.

Yet for a community which still believes – in some quarters – that gays can be “converted,” or that trans Jews can be re-educated, it is a huge step. Let’s take that step together. Let’s have that conversation about pastoral support within a Halachic framework.

And let’s not let any more young lives end because we didn’t help.

I was shocked to tears while watching a recent TV programme on a Nazi festival held in Thueringia, Germany.

I did not think that in 2018 Nazis in Germany could openly express their lies. As a German I feel very upset.

I have visited Israel many times and I want people there to know the majority of we Germans stand behind the values of Israelis and we completely condemn these people.

I have met many Holocaust survivors during my travels in Israel and it is my feeling that anybody who denies the Holocaust should visit Yad Vashem.

I’m also always impressed by the friendliness of Israelis, young and old.

I’m deeply ashamed of some of my fellow citizens.

It is our duty to prevent a repeat of what happened.

He went wild and said: ”London!”

I thought he would then leave me alone, perhaps with a religious story that would give me something to remember to seal this view I had waited for all my life.

Instead, he said this: “You must watch Channel 9 tonight at 7pm – Arsenal are playing!”

I learnt something from this fundamental experience!

Maybe he was right – the meaning of life is Arsenal.

Shadow cabinet must emerge from shadows JENNI FRAZER

I

spent Sunday at the Jewish Labour Movement conference. It was a bit like the curate’s egg — good in parts (is there such a thing as a rabbi’s egg, I wonder anxiously? Best not to explore).

By any token, the conference was a roaring success, with 500 people attending, compared with last year’s 175.

There was even the starry, and extraordinary, appearance of former prime minister Gordon Brown, proving that comparing him charisma for charisma with his predecessor, Tony Blair, is not an unfair exercise.

There was much to admire in both the presentations and the audience, many of whom were young, enthusiastic, and apparently desperate to rescue what their elders — though not necessarily their betters — had told them was a lost cause.

And yet, I felt that there were people missing from Sunday’s event. They were: John McDonnell, Diane Abbott, Keir

Starmer, Emily Thornberry — basically the big beasts of the shadow cabinet.

Each, in his or her own way, has been lining up to tell the Jewish community that there is nothing to fear from Project Corbyn.

Indeed McDonnell, currently occupying the “Good Cop” pulpit in contrast to his Voldemort leader’s All-Bad-Cop-All-The-Time, went on breakfast TV on Sunday, fluttered his eyelashes at former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, and implored him to come and meet Corbyn.

Based on current rhetoric, it seems the other side of unlikely that such a meeting will take place, but McDonnell appears to have cast himself in the role of Mr Emollient.

This is perhaps so that he can say with conviction “I tried to reach out to the Jewish community, but they weren’t having any”.

However, any of his colleagues on the shadow front bench could have done themselves no end of good by popping in to the JLM conference to see what was going on — and engage with us there.

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott, who never ceases to remind everyone that she

represents hundreds of Jews in her Hackney constituency, could have dropped in; Emily Thornberry, the shadow foreign secretary, needed to be there to make a cogent case for the full adoption of IHRA and still show that it is possible to criticise the Israeli government.

Sir Keir Starmer, who has demurred on the sidelines about the toxic swamp that now surrounds Labour’s hierarchy, could have shown his face.

But no. There were plenty of familiar names, from MP Ian Austin, currently facing disciplinary proceedings for having had “words” with Labour chair Ian Lavery, and Dame Margaret

Hodge, currently the surprise pin-up girl of the Jewish community for her face-to-face confrontation with Voldemort.

Also present was the trenchant Ilford MP Wes Streeting, still a champion of the Jewish community despite all the heat he has received from some sectors; and new MP Rosie Duffield, bravely joining the fray.

The sole voice of the other side was Momentum’s Jon Lansman, a man who can hardly be said to be unfamiliar with what the Jewish community is thinking.

I am as sure as I can be that JLM organisers would have been delighted to welcome such high-profile MPs. Lord Sacks, perhaps aware that it is Ellul, the month of repentance, has called for Corbyn to “atone” for his past behaviour.

That’s never going to happen, in my view.

But a bit of reaching out by his colleagues would go a long way to reassure us of the genuine goodwill, as displayed by Gordon Brown, towards Jews in Labour.

I

t’s back to school week and I notice social media is full of proud parents posting photos of their nearest and dearest ready for school. School – the best days of our lives. Is this really true for everyone?

Behind the smiles, smart uniforms and oversized bags, whichever year your child is about to enter, you can be certain there are young people for whom this may be a day of dread. Not because they dislike learning or are overwhelmed by the expectations to follow, but because they worry they don’t fit in. They fear whispered comment, social isolation or blatant bullying just for who they are.

These are the young people whose sexuality or gender does not conform to the accepted ‘norm’. For them, adolescence can be experienced very differently from their peers who might fit in with the expectations around gender or sexuality others have for them.

For lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT+) students, the school environment can be a minefield and a lonely time.

In the Jewish educational community, there has been much discussion recently about the Ofsted requirement to teach about alternative lifestyles and whether this is something that should be insisted upon for faith-based schools.

But put that discussion aside and focus on the young person in your school, in your community and in your social crowd.

If we really believe every child has the right to thrive as well as receive the best education, then as school leaders we have a responsibility to address this issue head-on.

Young people struggle with a range of mental health and wellbeing issues and some of these can be related to discovering their own sexuality and gender, and fear of how this will be received. Young people who are part of the Orthodox community often feel a heightened level of stigma and additional pressures to conform due to social, religious and communal expectations.

This creates a double burden for them at a

time when they are trying to discover who they are and who they want to be.

This week the Chief Rabbi, Ephraim Mirvis, published a guide for Orthodox Jewish schools, on supporting the wellbeing of LGBT+ pupils.

Produced together with KeshetUK, this is a publication all Jewish schools should embrace.

It is written with great sensitivity and wisdom.

It considers both the students who need our support while remaining true to Halacha.

The Chief Rabbi leads the way for all educators in how we must work actively to prevent homophobic, transphobic and biphobic bullying and provide appropriate pastoral

support. The guide provides insight on how to listen, use language appropriately and care for our students so they feel supported. It helps and guides schools to ‘think ahead’ and be proactive rather than reactive on this subject.

JFS is not only proud to support this initiative but will use the resource to ensure a sense of real inclusivity at school with KeshetUK. The guide reminds us we are all created in the image of the Almighty and we all have our place in this world. As we approach Rosh Hashana, we should all question whether we truly believe this and what we can do to ensure those who we educate feel unique and valued.

It is all too easy to sweep issues of sexuality and gender identity under the carpet for the sake of communal uniformity. However, by potentially ostracising young people, not only are we not modelling good middot (character traits) but we are losing talented young people who are an asset to our community.

In turn, they lose out on the richness and spirituality that their heritage offers them and to which they are entitled. Let us resolve this new year to do better by all our young people.

BY KEN STEPHENS When Eleanor Roosevelt, the former First Lady of the White House, was given a “VIP” tour of Israel’s Tel Hashomer Hospital in the early 1950’s by Professor Chaim Sheba, the facility consisted of nothing more than ramshackle military barracks, which were used by British troops during the Mandate era. Sheba explained to her how he wanted to raise enough funding to create a modern medical facility that could serve the needs of local citizens in the neophyte Jewish State.

Nearly 70 years later, the sprawling 200 acre Sheba Medical Center (renamed after Chaim Sheba passed away in 1971), not only tends to the needs of over 1.5 million people a year in Central Israel, it has become the largest and most sophisticated hospital facility in the Middle East and is well on its way towards becoming a global medical superpower.

Just by walking through the bustling hallways of the hospital’s various buildings during the past year, one could see, feel and experience the personal medical dramas that were being played out on a daily basis.

In one adrenalin infused episode, which eventually caught the attention of the international media, a young girl by the name of Malik, was seriously wounded in an aerial bombing attack by Syrian forces.

She was rescued from certain death by an IDF combat medical team and Prof. Kreiss, who made sure Malik was transported to Sheba’s Edmond and Lily Safra Children’s Hospital by helicopter, where the child received lifesaving emergency care. Malik’s mother, who was whisked to Sheba with her daughter wearing only the clothes on her back, and having never met an Israeli before in her life, prays for a better future for her daughter.

“I can only hope that we can return to our home in Syria and live in peace with our neighbors. We are scared but hopeful,” she revealed.

Jewish and Israeli-Arab doctors and nurses have also worked feverishly to save the lives of hundreds of desperately ill Palestinian children and adults from Gaza and the West Bank throughout the year. It is not unusual to see a concerned mother or grandmother’s frown turn into a smile, as both Jewish and Israeli Arab doctors provide life-saving treatments and a reassuring nod.

“When a mother from Gaza sees that a Jewish or an Israeli Arab doctor is doing everything to save their sick child from death, revealing the true humanity of Israelis, they are transformed into ambassadors of peace when they return home. These are the untold stories that unfold here on a daily basis. It is the essence of what it means to be a hospital without borders and an oasis of peace,” said Prof. Kreiss.

During the past week, one could hear “Happy New Year” felicitations being offered from visiting American pharmaceutical executives to a phalanx of doctors and researchers at Sheba, who’ve been treating hundreds of desperately ill people of all ages, using a potpourri of new drugs and therapies. Not a day goes by, when a seriously ill patient isn’t being saved by a new, cutting-edge drug, as part of a clinical trial, sponsored by well-known pharmaceutical and bio-tech companies. Sheba is already considered a global player in the clinical trial arena based on its superior medical care and research capabilities. In a recent unscripted scene that would have made the producers of any British or American medical TV drama envious, a gravely ill leukemia stricken girl from Bnei Brak literally skated from her hospital room out of the Safra Children’s Hospital’s front doors, just a few weeks after receiving the newfangled CAR-T immunotherapy.

A cultural chasm British Zionism helps to bridge RABBI GIDEON SYLVESTER UNITED SYNAGOGUE’S ISRAEL RABBI

hilling news from Britain’s inner cities. Recent revelations of a 22 percent rise in knife crime focuses attention on disaffected youth joining gangs and wreaking havoc in their neighbourhoods. Poverty and drug addiction, the breakdown of families and street violence are all signs of a situation spinning out of control. There are fascinating parallels with Israel’s Ethiopian underclass and the response of Anglo Jewry.

Ethiopian Jews were known as skilled workers who held upstanding positions in their communities, but their airlift to Israel created an enormous cultural chasm. An Ethiopian once explained this to me, with the following narrative: “On the airlift to Israel”, he said, “I didn’t have time to worry about the aeroplane, I was too terrified by the staircase leading up to it. I had never seen stairs before and I had no idea how to climb them”.

in modern Israel. In this, they frequently outpace their parents, who struggle to learn the language, understand the culture and find employment. This generation gap further aggravates tensions. Teens are shocked by the powerlessness of their parents, discipline breaks down and the young people begin to despise their Ethiopian Jewish heritage; identifying with African-American culture instead.

An underclass of drugs and crime awaits them.

This has all the potential to become a Zionist nightmare.

Fortunately, our community is not willing to see any sector crumble. A UJIA programme

enables families to support the Ethiopian community by twinning their children’s bar- and batmitzvahs with those of Ethiopian immigrants.

The young people attend parallel clubs in Haifa’s Kiriat Bialik and across the UK. The British and Ethiopian children become internet pen pals, delving deeper into their own heritage and learning about the other’s. For the Ethiopians, the educational programme is a lifeline which provides structure, fun and a fabulous celebration of their Ethiopian Jewish culture.

Last month, the UK delegation travelled to Israel and the two groups were united. Jewish children separated by thousands of years of history and culture talked, danced, played and prayed together. As the Ethiopians showcased their homes and culture to their British counterparts, they developed a new self-respect which enabled them to bridge the gap with their families, whom they now saw in a new light: “The hearts of the parents are restored to the hearts of the children and the hearts of the children to their parents.” (Malachi 4:6).

The highlight of the trip was the joint

bar- and batmitzvah ceremony at Jerusalem’s Yeshurun Synagogue. I had the privilege of officiating at the service and it felt as if I was participating in the ingathering of exiles from the four corners of the earth.

Once upon a time, Zionism meant draining swamps and cleaning kibbutz cowsheds. Those days are over, so it’s not surprising some of our youth imagine Israel no longer needs their support; there are no more challenges and no role left for them.

Yet Israel’s Ethiopian community needs to escape the terrible trajectory of grinding poverty, gang life and crime. British Jewry’s partnership and friendship is empowering them with skills and self-confidence to do this and to play their role in Israeli society.

There is still much more to do, and these programmes offer British Jews a chance to engage with the thrill of Zionism by becoming partners in building a just and caring Jewish society. Children at Hertsmere Jewish Primary School enjoyed a special ‘welcome back’ assembly on Tuesday, when they shared their excitement for the start of the new academic year as well as the Jewish New Year.

The Shabbaton Choir presented its annual Choral Midnight Selichot Service at Bevis Marks.

Sinai Jewish Primary pupils, including Daniella Ezra, Dylan Shack, Max Bookbinder, Ruby Shaw, Zev Cohen and Esther Nathan, blew the shofar at their welcome back assembly to mark the start of a new academic year and as part of their JS Rosh Hashanah preparation.

Singer Jonny Mosesson entertained everyone at the joint Rosh Hashanah campus party at The Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Centre.

Children at Yavneh Nursery in Woodside Park decorated paper honey pots with apple stamps and hand prints in preparation for Rosh Hashanah.

Volunteers, staff and people from Kisharon, the charity for children and adults with learning difficulties, help produce Rosh Hashanah gift ideas.

Jewish Care’s pastoral leader Rabbi Menachem Junik visited the charity’s homes and centres to blow the shofar and talk about Rosh Hashanah, while members and residents baked honey cakes (pictured right).

Jewish Blind & Disabled volunteer Sallie Gilbery has been busy baking honey cakes for all seven of the charity’s buildings.

During an Israel tour sponsored by JNF UK, 100 Year 9 students from Yavneh College toured the central sites of Jewish and Zionist heritage and history. Alongside other activities, they helped visited a centre for children with disabilities, baked challot with bereaved mothers, walked in the city of David, and went to Masada and HaShomer HaChadash. Group leader and deputy head Rabbi Andrew Davis said: “We believe it’s important to start the tours of Israel while the Jewish identity and the beliefs of the children are still crystallising.”

More than 250 guests attended the ORT-JUMP graduation. Year 12 students across 10 London schools took part in the education charity’s mentoring programme and, matched with mentors across a range of industries, were offered expert advice and guidance on their career paths. Guest speaker Luciana Berger MP said: “You’re going to have the challenges of clearing up the messes left by previous generations, of fixing the planet and ending the injustices that scar our societies, to

learn to live with one another without starting wars and you’ll be smashing the glass ceilings that today still hold women back in some professions.”

8 NEO-NATAL TARGET

Pupils from Nancy Reuben Primary School set a £700 collection target for the neo-natal unit at Netanya’s Laniado Hospital to mark the 70th anniversary of Israel. Simon Silver, CEO of Laniado UK, explained how the money would go towards the purchase of two special neo-natal cots at the hospital.

Composer Roxanna Panufnik tells Francine Wolfisz about her latest work, which is inspired by a Jewish poet and premieres at the Last Night of the Proms

I

have lived in the underworld so long,” wrote Jewish poet Isaac Rosenberg. “How can you, a creature of light, without terror understand the song and unmoved hear what moves in night.”

In a later verse, the flourishing artist whose life was tragically cut short at 27 and is remembered for his poignant First World War poetry, refers to the “terrible darkness” and “breathing breath impure”.

Written five years before the outbreak of war, In The Underworld actually refers to living with a broken heart, but presents an eerie prediction of the appalling conditions soldiers would face in the trenches.

Such is its relevance more than 100 years on, that composer Roxanna Panufnik has placed the poem front and centre for her latest major work, Songs of Darkness, Dreams of Light, which premieres at the Last Night of the Proms this weekend.

Panufnik, the daughter of the late Polish composer and conductor, Sir Andrzej Panufnik, and Jewish photographer Camilla Jessel, reveals she wanted to “shout it from the rooftops” when she received the much-coveted BBC commission.

The concept was to come up with a piece commemorating 100 years since the end of the First World War, scored for two choirs and an orchestra.

Panufnik, who turned 50 this year and has a keen interest in world music, tells me: “They wanted me to write for the BBC Singers, a crack chamber choir of the most amazing professional singers and also the BBC Symphony Chorus, 114 fabulous amateur singers, as well as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted

by Sir Andrew Davis.

“While it commemorates the centenary of the end of the First World War, at the same time it looks optimistically and happily into the future.”

She admits feeling the task was “quite a challenge”, but was given a starting point after being sent “this amazing Rosenberg poem” by a former teacher.

The composer, who lives in London with her husband and their three children, confesses: “I had never heard of Rosenberg before, but it’s such an amazing poem. I didn’t know the background to it.

“I just thought instantly that it’s such an amazing depiction of life in the trenches and only discovered afterwards that it was about unrequited love.”

To offset the poem, performed by the BBC Singers, Panufnik selected lines from Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet for the BBC Symphony Chorus. The two independent pieces work together as a “conversation” between the two choirs.

She explains: “I found these lines that seemed to soothe and comfort the fears in the Rosenberg poem.

The Gibran poem finishes, ‘We can build another tower in the sky’, so it all ends optimistically and almost like saying, whatever happens, we can rebuild.”

After choosing the two pieces, Panufnik set about writing the music, reflecting the backgrounds of each poet. “For the Rosenberg, I’ve used a really beautiful Ashkenazi prayer mode, and for the Gibran I’ve used this Maronite Syriac chant. They both come from the same Middle Eastern sound world, so that worked very well together.”

Her composition also reflects Gibran’s later interest in Islam, using the structure of a zikr, a prayer chant that starts slow and quiet, before building up to a “faster and brighter conclusion”.

As someone who has long held an interest in music from different faiths and cultures, Panufnik – who is a practising Catholic – reveals she has “always felt an affinity with Jewish music” and feels “very strongly” about her Jewish identity.

“I’ve always loved Jewish music,” she says. “And I definitely feel my Jewish roots, as much as I feel my Polish Catholic father’s roots. I’m a Catholic, but in my heart and soul I do feel my Jewish roots very strongly.”

Her Jewishness, she says, has influenced her music as much as her late father who, having been a victim of Nazi censorship and the Polish communist dictatorship, arrived as a political refugee in England, in 1954.

She says of her choice to follow in his footsteps: “It was in my DNA. I was brought up with music around me all the time, so it was like there was never going to be anything else. I tried and discarded so many things during my childhood. In the end, it became quite clear the only thing I was any good at was composing and he was incredibly supportive of that.

“I still feel his presence very clearly. In my composing shed, I have his grand piano that he composed on, his light fittings, writing desk and baton.

I feel whatever I am doing is getting to him.”

Looking to her premiere, Panufnik reveals she will be sitting in the audience, among the “real party atmosphere” of the Last Night of the Proms. “It’s incredibly exciting. BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN The Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah is always Parshat Nitzavim and there is a deep connection between the two.

On Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgement, our focus turns to the books of life and death that are opened in Heaven. The stirring tunes and sombre mood in shul during unetana tokef, often accompanied by tear-filled prayers are a palpable expression of the essence of the day.

The call of the chazan and the community that teshuvah, tefillah u tzedakah (repentrance, prayer and charity) remove the harsh decree, serve to reinforce this. Similarly our sedra includes the passage of teshuvah, depicting a personal and national return to Hashem at the end of days.

The notion of life and death is expressed in our sedra within the context our own free will. “I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. You shall choose life, so that you and your offspring will live” (Devarim 30:19).

Life and death are presented as a choice and we are told to choose life. Our choices define and determine the type of life we will live; as agents of free will, we are empowered to choose between a meaningful life and empty existence.

The Torah is presenting a profound idea. The exercise of free will is not merely the choice between good and evil but the difference between life and death. The life offered to us on Rosh Hashanah is the opportunity to live a meaningful life, where we are focused on growth and making the world a better place. JOAB

Despite bearing a name meaning “The Lord is my father”, Joab was a man of blood who came to a very sticky end.

His mother, Zeruiah, was King David’s sister. This seems to have led him to believe he had a peculiar right to act badly with impunity, and he took advantage of this all his life.

David promoted his nephews to control the army, making Joab the captain, while his brothers Asahel and Abishai also held high office.

Asahel was killed by Abner, Saul’s general, in combat, so Joab killed him against David’s express instructions, in an underhand and cowardly manner – but

the king did not punish him.

Joab also successfully led the assault on the fortress part of Jerusalem, for which he was promoted to general. He was, to his shame, involved with David’s contriving to have Uriah (husband of Bathsheba) killed during the assault.

In many ways, Joab played the role of faithful retainer, warrior, zealot and henchman.

Late in David’s reign, his son Absalom rebelled and declared himself king, but it was Joab who helped defeat him.

On hearing the rebellious prince had been found caught in a tree, Joab killed Absalom, but this was much to David’s anguish, having lost his favourite son.

Joab never recovered the king’s full confidence and there now came a steady deterioration in relations with David.

Joab and others started questioning the King’s judgement and supported David’s son Adonijah in his rebellion.

The loyal retainer and nephew now became the enemy.

The Bible Says What?

‘God punishes children for their parents’ sins’

BY RABBI NEIL JANES After the magnificent proclamation that God is slow to anger and merciful, we are told he will “visit the iniquities upon the children to the third and fourth generation” (Exodus 34:7), seemingly in direct contradiction with Deuteronomy 24:16 which tells us parents are not punished on account of their children nor vice versa.

The wonderful commentary in the Reform Judaism High Holy Day machzor quotes Martin Buber, who suggests the generational effect is how the consequences of guilt affect future generations – or that the punishment of the individual has long-lasting ramifications.

Buber follows most sages before him who attempt to avoid the plain meaning. The Babylonian Talmud (Sanhedrin 27b) argues this verse from Exodus refers to those who follow in their father’s footsteps.

Of course, the idea of children being held accountable for their

forebears’ actions is abhorrent – precisely the point of the Talmudic discussion and why as Jews we do not read the Biblical text in isolation, but with the layers of interpretation.

In an audacious midrash from Tanhuma, Rabbi Levi says Moses even disagrees with the generational punishment; as a result, Rabbi Levi suggests, when Deuteronomy tells us children should not be punished for their parents’ actions, we are actually reading Moses’ protest.

In another side to this, Sanhedrin 27b also argues through a person’s sin another individual might be caused to stumble. On this we read, “All are responsible for the other”.

The dependency of parent and child is perhaps the closest relationship; the verse therefore becomes a lens through which we see our wider responsibilities to all.  Rabbi Neil Janes is executive director of the Lyons Learning Project

BY RABBI PETE TOBIAS Michael Cohen, the former lawyer of US President Donald Trump, recently pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws when he paid hush money to Trump’s alleged lovers.

So is it ever acceptable to pay someone to keep a secret? This straightforward question deserves a straight answer – no.

If you pay someone to keep a secret, you are effectively asking that person to lie, which is a direct breach of the ninth commandment.

Can our Biblical heroes give us guidance? We need to show caution: many of the characters in the Books of Genesis, Judges, Samuel and Kings, for example, are less than squeaky clean. But Judges 2 has an instance where telling a lie actually has benefit.

Joshua sends two spies to Jericho.

They come to the house of Rahab.

Word of this reaches the king of Jericho and he sends officers to inter-

rogate her.

She lies to the soldiers, telling them the spies have left the city. They are, in fact, hidden on her roof. After the soldiers leave, the Israelite spies thank her.

She asks them to protect her and her family when the city is attacked and they promise her this will happen – and the promise is kept.

From an Israelite perspective, Rahab did a good thing. One can’t help but wonder, however, what the king of Jericho, or his citizens, might have had to say about the matter once the walls came tumbling down.

Another story that came to mind when confronting this question was that of David and Bathsheba.

In order to secure Bathsheba as his new wife, David sent her husband, Uriah the Hittite, to the battlefront with a note for his captain.

The note asked that Uriah be put in the front line, to ensure that he would die in battle. This duly occurred, and David secured his wife.

The prophet Nathan later told David a story about a wealthy man with many sheep who, instead of killing one of his own animals, took from his poor neighbour the only sheep the neighbour owned.

David’s response was outrage at the wealthy man’s behaviour. “You are that man!” roared the prophet.

I have had several courses of antibiotics from my GP which help for a while but the symptoms regularly recur. What else can I do?

Dear Tracey, The first step I would advise is to complete a Midstream Specimen of Urine (MSU) to check for an infection.

If a urinary tract infection (UTI) is present, it should be treated initially with a two-week course of the appropriate antibiotic.

If the problem persists, I would advise an ultrasound scan of the urinary tract to exclude any complicating factors such as bladder stones or incomplete bladder emptying.

To discuss further treatment options, a referral should be made to a urologist. The treatment options include: 1. Simple lifestyle changes (increased fluid intake, emptying the

bladder before and after intercourse, avoiding acidic/spicy foods and drinks, potassium citrate, cranberry juice.

2. Topical oestrogen cream to the introitus 3. Prophylactic antibiotics daily for three to six months.

4. A simple operation on the water pipe called a therapeutic urethral dilatation (TUD).

5. Bladder installations once a week for six weeks with a drug called Cystistat.

Fortunately, most women do respond to a treatment or combination of treatments.

If you feel antibiotics are not as effective anymore, hopefully the treatment options above will be helpful in managing your cystitis.

Brothers battling against odds TRIATHLON Two brothers with a passion for triathlon are hoping to make a name for themselves in the sport – despite having to battle against the odds.

Joe, 15 and Dan Levine, 13, have been taking part in triathlons for the past six years, even though they’ve had to train by themselves and aren’t part of any cycling or swimming club.

In addition, Joe sufferers from being hypermobile, while Dan is constantly competing against older children.

Proud of his sons, dad Steven said: “Right from the start, both boys have competed against the odds, Joe with his condition and Dan racing against older kids. We’ve always encouraged the boys to enjoy sport and cycled as a family from when they were barely more than three.”

Initially from Surrey, they were inspired

to take up the sport following the Brownlee brothers’ medal-winning exploits at the 2012 Olympics. Competing in local triathlons, Dan won his first race the following year, before in 2015, both entered more races in London and the South East.

Moving to London in 2017, the siblings changed triathlon regions, with Dan finishing second in the London region TriStar 2 series and Joe fourth in the youth category. Dan next represents London at the National Champs, with both then taking part in the Inter-Regional Duathlon.

Steven added: “We live in an area without any junior tri clubs and they’re up against kids who are part of a structured and vigorous training regime. Most of their cycling is self-trained and they’re not part of a swim club. But they’ve kept going, while excelling at school – even as their parents we don’t know how they fit it all in.”
