News /UJIA dinner / London celebration

‘Be proud British Zionists’ Theresa May has insisted that young community members should be encouraged to feel pride in their identity as “Jewish, British and Zionist” – as she took several side-swipes at Jeremy Corbyn without once mentioning his name, writes Justin Cohen. In a wide-ranging speech that was greeted with a standing ovation from the 800 guests at the United Jewish Israel Appeal (UJIA) dinner, the prime minister pledged to build the “strongest and deepest possible relationship” with Israel. Telling the audience she was speaking as the prime minister “for the whole country” in expressing solidarity amid current fears, the Conservative leader said she was “sickened” by reports some British Jews would consider leaving the country if Corbyn became head of the UK government. “I do not underestimate the threat posed by those who promote antisemitism, or hatred in any form,” she said. “Nor the pernicious nature of what those people say and what they stand for. But I do not believe those voices speak for the vast, overwhelming majority of people in our country… And most importantly, I do

not believe those voices will ever win. We will not let them win.” To huge applause, she vowed to stand with the Jewish community, like every community, in tackling racism, adding: “Let me be clear: you cannot claim to be tackling racism, if you are not tackling antisemitism. And that mission begins by being clear about what antisemitism is.” May referred to her government’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism in December 2016. Labour initially adopted it without four key examples of potential antisemitism – only reversing that decision this month following uproar. She said: “Criticising the government of Israel is never – and can never be – an excuse for hatred against the Jewish people – any more than criticising the British government would be an excuse for hatred against the British people. There are no excuses for any kind of hatred towards the Jewish people. Just as there are no excuses for hatred towards any community of any race or religion.” She spoke of her efforts as home secretary to exclude those espousing antisemitism and Islamophobia

from Britain and, in a thinly-veiled reference to the recently-unearthed 2014 speech from Corbyn about British Zionists and irony, said: “Nothing excuses antisemitism – not comedy, not satire, not even irony.” And echoing the words she uttered at a meeting of the Board of Deputies in the wake of the attack on a Paris kosher supermarket, May said: “In the face of any kind of hatred against the Jewish people – in any form and anywhere... I say with that same defiance: “Je suis Juif.” But she pointed to causes for hope, including the reach of the Holocaust Educational Trust. She hailed UJIA’s “vital” work in bringing together Jews and Arabs in Israel and deepening the connections between young Jews and the Jewish state, saying: “If we are to stand up for the values we share – then one of the things we need to do is give young Jewish people the confidence to be proud of their identity – as British, Jewish, and Zionist too. “There is no contradiction between these identities – and we must never let anyone try to suggest that there should be. Indeed, one of

the most sickening aspects of the antisemitism that tries, abhorrently, to suggest Israel is a racist endeavour – is that those voices seek to separate the Jewish diaspora in our country from their connection with Israel.” The historic visit of Prince William to Israel was a celebration of bilateral ties, she said, expressing her pride in Britain’s role in the state’s creation and looking forward to “an ambitious free trade deal between our countries”. And when it comes to her commitment to Israel’s security, the PM insisted she could be counted on. She vowed to continue standing up for Israel “when it is treated unfairly” at the UN and said her government would have “no truck” with those that subscribe to the BDS campaign. In a video message, Israel President Reuven Rivlin hailed Israel’s triumphs against the odds. But, in a message that struck a particularly poignant note on light of the recent Nation State Law he has criticised, he said the country must face its challenges, including bringing together the “four tribes” of secular Jews, Arabs, Charedim and the “national religious”.

LONDON IN TEL AVIV The best of London culture is set to touch down in Tel Aviv next year for a major weeklong festival. The London in Tel Aviv festival follows the success of the inaugural Tel Aviv in London extravaganza, which showcased Israeli dance, music and food at the Roundhouse last winter to more than 10,000 people. Taking place from 23 to 30 November 2019, British stars from the worlds of arts, music, theatre and food will wow Israelis in venues that could range from the Opera House

to Tel Aviv port. Marc Worth, chair of the project, told Jewish News: “The aim is to strengthen the bond between

the two cities and between Israel and the UK. The event is non-political with no governments involved. Several artists and performers have expressed interested in participating.” Hailing last year’s festival for “showcasing the rich culture of Tel Aviv and its citizens of all religious and ethnic backgrounds”, Theresa May told the UJIA dinner this week: “We look forward to plans for a London in Tel Aviv Festival to showcase London’s great cultural diversity.”

Antisemitism rally / News

Thousands protest in Manchester Home Secretary Sajid Javid sent a message of support and solidarity to Sunday’s Manchester #EnoughisEnough rally, telling the Jewish community: “You are not alone”, writes Jenni Frazer. It was a heartfelt message echoed by the city’s mayor, Andy Burnham, whose deputy, Baroness Hughes, joined a huge crowd from to hear 10 MPs – mainly local – express solidarity and pledge to root out antisemitism from British society. The rally was spearheaded by North West Friends of Israel and 32 other sponsoring organisations, and drew groups from London, Brighton, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow, Sheffield – and even representatives from Plymouth and Canterbury. Organisers say 2,500 people attended. Chair Stuart Ailion set the tone when he told the crowd the level of antisemitism in Britain today had become “institutionalised”. He said: “It leaves our Jewish community feeling threatened, bullied, and vulnerable.” To cheers, he declared: “This is for sure: we pay our respects to the victims of terror. We do not lay wreaths to the perpetrators of terror”. Speakers took to the stage in front of two giant draped Union Jack flags

to denounce antisemitism and – in the case of the Labour MPs who spoke – express their support for colleagues who had been victims of abuse and frequent misogyny. But perhaps the biggest cheers – despite almost biblical amounts of rain – were reserved for Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the Jewish community’s two “great dames” – MPs Dame Margaret Hodge and Dame Louise Ellman, the latter of whom was born and brought up in Manchester. Dame Margaret declared: “I have lived my life as a secular Jew, but it is my heritage which has made me who I am. I will not forget.” Despite defeating the British National Party’s Nick Griffin in the 2010 general election, she said that since Jeremy Corbyn had become Labour leader, she had received more abusive antisemitic hatred than that emanating from the far-right. “One message said, ‘Margaret Hodge is a Zionist pig, and hopefully Hizbollah will catch up with the bitch’.” She said Corbyn “has to accept responsibility for what is going on in Labour. He may be right to say antisemitism exists elsewhere, but he is wrong to suggest our mission to eradicate antisemitism

UJS’ Hannah Rose and Daniel Kosky, above, joined thousands at the rally

from the Labour Party is simply an attempt to silence any criticism of the Israeli government… I will never accept antisemitism that is dressed up as something else, as a voice for Palestinian rights, when it is plain simple hatred of Jews.” Mirvis told the crowd there were two kinds of Britain, one “where antisemitic incidents are at an all-time high… in which Jewish schools, our synagogues, our communal facilities exist behind walls, gates and guards, to protect us…in which people who

were members of the British National Party and the Ku Klux Klan are praising public comments about the Jews which have been uttered by the leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition”. Nevertheless, he said, there was another Britain, in “which we can walk the streets of these country with a kippah on our heads without fear… in which society is proud to have a Jewish community in its midst and views us as an essential and integral part of the fabric of British society”. Perhaps most striking among the

contributions from non-Jewish MPs was the fact several highlighted close links with the Jewish community. James Frith, MP for Bury North, spoke about his Jewish wife; Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, has a Jewish father; and Jeff Smith, Labour MP for Withington, is the great-grandson of Rosa Simonson, a Jewish immigrant to Manchester. Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl and Jewish Leadership Council chair Jonathan Goldstein also spoke.

News / No2H8 Crime Awards

Hate crime heroes take centre stage Top politicians and anti-hate campaigners pledged to drive “hate crime of any form” out of Britain during the #No2H8 Crime Awards, writes Adam Decker. The theme of this year’s award ceremony – which was media partnered by Jewish News – was ‘Upstanders and Not Bystanders’, with many people and organisations praised for standing up to hatred. Among the winners was Luciana Berger MP, who won the Jo Cox Memorial Award. Receiving her award she said: “It’s an enormous privilege to receive this award in honour of my dear friend and colleague Jo Cox, who paid the ultimate price for standing up for what she believed in.” Berger added: “It’s been humbling hearing all the stories of so many people who do so much to make sure our country is a better place. I don’t want to be described as a bystander and, together as upstanders, we have a job to do to encourage people outside of this room to be upstanders as well.” More than 350 people gathered at the InterContinental hotel on Park Lane for the third annual awards ceremony, which

champions those who tackle hatred, prejudice and intolerance in all of its forms. Fiyaz Mughal, creator of the No2H8 Awards and founder of the anti-Muslim hate crime monitoring project Tell MAMA, said: “Today is a celebration of all that is good in our country, because there are so many people committed to making a difference in their communities by challenging hatred, intolerance and bigotry. We must tell politicians from all parties that hatred cannot be allowed to fester within Britain. Our Jewish brothers and sisters feel a sense of alienation at this time. We stand with you in this moment of time.” “You are not alone and we will continue to fight against intolerance, bringing with us many other communities. What makes Britain great is a sense of pluralism and affection for one another.” Lord Bourne, Parliamentary UnderSecretary of State and Minister for Faith, said: “This event is a moment to celebrate seemingly ordinary people who have taken extraordinary action. We need to make it clear as politicians that antisemitism and Islamophobia have no part in

our society, and I am determined we will do just that. He added: “Hate crime of any form is a direct challenge to the fabric of our society and will not go unchallenged. To persecute somebody because of their race, religion, sexual orientation or disability is utterly and totally unacceptable, and we condemn it is a government and as a country.” In total, 13 awards were handed out, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, Upstanding Organisation Award and Law Enforcement Upstander Award. Richard Ferrer, editor of Jewish News, said: “This is the third year we’ve been involved in these awards. It is an ongoing pleasure and privilege hearing the inspiring and uplifting stories of ordinary heroes standing up to hate. I hope it goes from strength to strength.” Richard Benson, ex-chief executive of the Community Security Trust and chair of the No2H8 Awards, said: “We cannot and will not sit back and assume the struggle against intolerance has been won. It’s only by taking responsibility and becoming ‘upstanders’ that we can assure safety and security for all communities.”

Met commissioner Cressida Dick praised ordinary people

Britain’s most senior police officer vowed not to “let the haters win” in a striking address to the #No2H8 Crime Awards. Praising the efforts of “ordinary” people in standing up to hate, Metropolitan police commissioner Cressida Dick said: “This is difficult work if you’re in law enforcement and even more difficult work if you’re in the third sector or in the community – you don’t have the uniform or support we have when you take these issues on. “I pay tribute to all the ‘upstanders’ and people who are determined that even when we have the most terrible things like the 2017 attacks happen, we

do not take our foot off the gas. We will not allow people to divide us.” She was addressing a 350-strong audience during the third #NO2H8 Crime Awards held at the InterContinental hotel on Park Lane. “In London, on occasion, we have hate crime and, on occasion, we have devastating hate crime. London was riven and wounded last year, together with the rest of the country, by the most awful, senseless and hateful attacks,” she added. “But what we are most proud of in Britain is our diversity and our cohesiveness and we will not let the haters win.”

Dick recalled her time as Commander for Diversity in the wake of the 9/11 attacks when she witnessed a Muslim colleague in traditional dress being subject to abuse upon laying a wreath. “I remember thinking, ‘what is happening in our country and what do we now have to do’.” “But I am incredibly proud of the police and law enforcement people, who have done so much since that time to stand up against hate crime, to make us as a service very much better at supporting those who challenge hate crime, and to deal with and investigate hate crime effectively,” she said.

Guide row / Police probe/ News

Anger at Chief’s guide One of Israel’s most senior Charedi rabbis has reportedly accused Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis of “blasphemy” in launching a new lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) guide for Jewish schools. Mirvis was accused of “encouraging” homosexuality by urging Jewish schools to help cut antiLGBT bullying, according to a document purportedly based on the teachings of Jerusalem-based Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, an anti-Zionist and vice-president of Israel’s Rabbinical Court. The document, seen by Jewish News, claims Sternbuch, who was born in London and survived the Blitz before making aliyah, said Mirvis was “using the cloak of lofty principles” to “formulate a new theory of drawing sinners into our camp”. The Orthodox critic, 90, has a large following around the world. His visit to a Satmar conference in New York in June bringing much of Brooklyn to a standstill, with thousands fighting just to touch his motorcade. Sternbuch purportedly said Mirvis “blasphemes our holy Torah and runs counter to the foundations of the holiness of our nation, since

Foreign Office sukkah The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is to hold a Sukkot celebration for the first time in its 236-year history. Mandarins, civil servants and diplomats will help put up a Sukkah in the main quadrangle next Wednesday, decorated with lanterns and paper chains made by children in the FCO Nursery. The first-of-its-kind initiative is the

brainchild of the Department’s Religion and Belief Group, and was welcomed by Josh Nagli and Katie Kochmann, co-chairs of the Civil Service Jewish Network. “This is an exciting development for Jewish Civil Servants, enabling many to eat their meals in a Sukkah during Chol Hamoed,” they said in a joint statement.

‘RACIST’ MEN INVESTIGATED

A senior Charedi rabbi in Israel has criticised a new guide that urges teachers in schools under the Chief Rabbinate to protect LGBT Jews

the halocha [law] obligates us to distance such people, not legitimise them, especially since drawing them closer would pose a great danger to other students”. Earlier this month, Mirvis launched the first-of-its-kind guide, The Wellbeing of LGBT+ Pupils: A Guide for Orthodox Jewish Schools focused on the wellbeing of LGBT students for schools falling under the auspices of the Chief Rabbinate.

It urges teachers to protect Jews identifying as non-heterosexual or as a different gender, noting their high levels of self-harm and suicide attempts. Written with Jewish LGBT umbrella group Keshet UK, it was welcomed by JFS, the biggest Jewish school in Europe, but UKbased Charedi leaders were underwhelmed, saying it did not speak for the strictly-Orthodox community.

Sadiq Khan has said that several men accused of antisemitic hate speech on Oxford Street are being investigated by the Metropolitan Police. The London mayor (pictured) pictured pictured) explained the police action in response to a question at the London Assembly, by Assembly Member Andrew Dismore, after complaints that the men were targeting tourists with “antisemitic slurs”.

Londoner Debby Lee said the incident, on 28 July, saw men carrying signs relating to ‘Hebrews’ and Israel and told her that the Holocaust didn’t happen. Khan said: “We rightly value free speech in this country, but where that crosses the line into hate speech and hate crime, then the police will need to respond accordingly.”

OFSTED BOSS HAILS FAITH ED The head of Ofsted has said she would send her own child to a faith school, heralding their “many strengths”. Appearing on LBC Radio and answering callers’ questions, Chief Inspector Amanda Spielman said: “It’s not for me to like or dislike faith schools. They’re an intrinsic part of our system

and most of them do a really excellent job. Ours inspectors inspect faith and non-faith schools in the same way and have the same expectations for all.” The chief inspector, has been vilified by some Charedi leaders for a number of recent Ofsted downgrades at schools in areas like Stamford Hill.

News / Eli Benson tributes NEWS BRIEFS LFI ANGER OVER MOVE TO END £7.6M FUNDING Labour Friends of Israel (LFI) this week condemned the United States for cutting £7.6million of foreign aid money, supporting coexistence programmes between Israelis and Palestinians. Chair of LFI, Joan Ryan MP, said: “This mean-spirited and counterproductive step will hamper vital work to build bridges between Palestinians and Israelis and thus provide a platform for a future peace agreement. I call upon the UK government to urgently consider ways of working with our European partners to fill the financial gap left by this move.”

SENIOR NUS LEADER RESIGNS OVER SLURS A member of the National Union of Students’ (NUS) ruling body who was criticised by the Union of Jewish Students (UJS) last month has resigned. Ayo Olatunji stepped down from the NUS National Executive Council, a month after he was criticised for tweeting about the Rothschild conspiracy theory serving as “the only viable explanation people come across despite it being condemned as antisemitic”. He also compared Israel to the Nazis. The NUS announced his resignation on Tuesday.

Eli was a ‘legendary leader’ The former head of Magen David Adom UK was this week remembered as a “legendary leader” who dedicated his life to supporting Israel, writes Justin Cohen. Eli Benson spent 14 years as chief executive of the British arm of the medical emergency service, helping to raise more than $50million for the charity before stepping down in 2013. He also served in a number of other communal roles over a 40-year career, starting in 1972 as mazkir at Young Poale Zion. He later went on to serve in several posts at the Joint Israel Appeal, the precursor to UJIA, and as campaigns director for the Central British Fund, contributing to Operation Solomon to bring Ethiopian Jews to Israel. Daniel Burger, chief executive of MDA UK, told Jewish News: “Eli was a true gentleman and a remarkable fundraiser who helped enrich the lives of countless people. “He will be sorely missed by everyone he came into con-

tact with and worked tirelessly for the people of Israel and the community here. Our hearts go out to Anita and the family.” Paul Anticoni, chief executive of World Jewish Relief, which succeeded the Central British Fund, said: “Eli was a legendary leader and fundraiser at World Jewish Relief in the 1990s; a humble, quiet man who shunned the limelight but made an incredible difference particularly to Jewish communities in the Former Soviet Union and in Bosnia. “He was an old school fundraiser who made us all, as

Prince William unveils statue to hero who saved thousands Prince William this week demonstrated yet again how seriously he takes Holocaust education by unveiling a statue to honour a British spy who saved 10,000 Jews by issuing them with passports while working undercover in Berlin. His Royal Highness unveiled the statue to MI6 hero Frank Foley in the Midlands town of Stourbridge, where the veteran intelligence officer of two world wars chose to retire. It is the latest noteworthy involvement from the prince, who was visibly moved in June during his visit to Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust memorial centre. Months earlier, William and his wife Kate visited the Nazi concentration camp of Stutthof in occupied Poland, where they met two Holocaust survivors – Zigi Shipper and

Foley worked at the British Consulate in Berlin in the 1920s and 1930s

Manfred Goldberg – who had witnessed the camp’s horrors. Unveiling the statue on Tuesday, William met members of Foley’s family, as well as people who were saved by Foley and descendants of others who Foley rescued in the 1920s and 1930s. Foley worked undercover as a passport control officer in the British Consulate in pre-war Berlin and, in so doing, put his own safety at

considerable risk. Local MP Ian Austin, who spearheaded the campaign for a statue together with the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET), paid tribute to Foley, saying: “I hope it will help people learn how Frank Foley refused to stand by when people were being persecuted because of their race or religion. “His life and courage show us we all have a responsibility to stand up against intolerance and racism.” Foley’s work, which – if discovered – would have led to his torture and execution, remained an official secret until long after his death in 1956, when those he had saved chose to speak out. Further research by author Michael Smith led to Foley’s story being told in his book, Foley: The Spy Who Saved 10,000 Jews. MI6 boss Alex Younger

Sacks ‘honoured’ to help put faith in the frame

Search starts for UK’s Israel Eurovision song

Former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks has paid tribute to an artist whose London exhibition opened this week with images that capture today’s unprecedented levels of inter-religious dialogue. Sacks, who is one of several religious leaders featured in Nicola Green’s new Encounters exhibition, said it was “an honour” to be involved, after Monday’s launch at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square. Green, who co-founded the mentoring initiative Diaspora Platform, unveiled her latest exhibit in a series of more than 50 portraits co-sponsored by the Pears Foundation, together with a new book, The Art of Interfaith Dialogue. Alongside Sacks, other notable figures who sat for the project include the Dalai Lama, Pope Francis, the former Grand Mufti of Egypt, Ali Gomaa, and former archbishops Desmond Tutu and Rowan Williams. The exhibition, which runs for two months, includes images of Jewish, Christian, Muslim,

The search for the UK’s entry for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Israel has begun with an official panel now ready to consider songs submitted by the public. In the same process as last year, representatives of the official UK Eurovision Fan Club (OGAE UK) will shortlist their choice of public entries, as well as songs put forward by professional songwriters.

Lord Sacks is represented on the bottom row, second left

Hindu, Zoroastrian, Sikh, Baha’i, Jain, African, Confucian, Humanist, Shinto and indigenous leaders, and is intended as a comment of dialogue and identity. In the book, Green argues that we are entering “a new era of inter-religious relationships… formed by faith leaders across historically deep divides”.

She says: “Often for the first time in history, these religious leaders have begun to sit down together and consider possibilities for cooperation, dialogue, and friendship. “Together, they are leading the way towards a dialogue that respects and honours other religions, without compromising the truth of their own traditions.”

TV presenter and comedy writer Denis Norden has died, aged 96. The It’ll Be Alright On The Night host (pictured) died on Wednesday after spending “many weeks” at the Royal Free Hospital in north London, according to a statement from his children, Nick and Maggie Norden. They added: “A wonderful dad, a loving grandfather and great greatgrandfather – he gave his laughtermongering to so many. He will be in our hearts forever.”

Members of two synagogues visited their Muslim neighbours at a Cricklewood mosque during Yom Kippur after the driver of a car earlier reported for antisocial behaviour rammed into worshippers, seriously injuring two. LAST PLACES LEFT FOR GIRLS’ TECH CHALLENGE Budding female techies still have time to sign up to a special event aimed at encouraging more girls to get interested in engineering. Girls Do Tech, organised by Jewish Interactive and Intu, is calling on youngsters aged 12 to 18 to take part in the two-day extravaganza on Saturday, 6, and Sunday, 7 October. Focusing on wearable technology, participants will work in teams alongside a tech and business mentor, to design, create and make their ideas, which could be anything from a bike helmet indicating left or right with a simple tilt to the head or a bracelet made from headphones. The teams will then present their creations to the judging panel, which includes James Rosenthal, director of Global Agency at Google, Tamar Roth, product development engineer for

SODA and Francine Wolfisz, features editor at Jewish News. Among the prizes up for grabs are an exclusive tour of Google HQ, gift vouchers and a Berlin Boombox. Jewish Interactive came up with the event after noticing last year’s hackathon day attracted only five girls out of 50 children. Pia Azzuri, director of partnerships and events at Jewish Interactive, said: “We are hoping our event will empower and inspire girls to embrace technology, to see it with a real relevance to their lives and the jobs of tomorrow.”  Girls Do Tech takes place on Saturday, 6 October, 8.30pm to 10pm, and Sunday, 7 October, 9am to 7pm, in Westminster. It’s a matter of Taste By Jenni Frazer @JewishNewsUK

We may think we know everything there is to know about Jewish food, but Ilana Epstein, director of a new organisation called Ta’am (meaning taste) is set to bust some myths. Epstein, who is rebbetzin at Cockfosters and New Southgate Synagogue, working with her husband Daniel, has launched Ta’am in a bid to excite people about Judaism – through food. After living in Israel for a decade, during which she wrote a weekly food column for The Jerusalem Post, Epstein and her family returned to the UK four years ago. She worked for the United Synagogue, but realised that her passion for food, and researching the stories behind Jewish food, needed a wider audience. She now works under the umbrella of the Jewish Futures Trust, headed by former Aish HaTorah director Rabbi Naftali Schiff. Her mission? “We want Jews to find their authentic Jewish voice through food memories, food traditions and a future filled with the warmth and nurturing that food at its best can provide.” She adds: “Jews of all backgrounds always have a story about food, whether they are observant or assimilated. KHAN TO GUEST AT BOARD BIG DINNER Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will be the guest of honour at the Board of Deputies’ annual dinner on 5 November. The head of the community’s representative body thanked him for being “very supportive of our community” after the announcement was made. Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said: “At this challenging time for our community, we can think of no one better to address the community’s hopes and concerns.”

FAST RECOVERY AS FOOTBALLER PLAYS “Some people will say by eating a bagel, that links them to their Judaism. But I discovered that the first mention of bagels is in the Jewish community records of Krakow in 1610, where it is recorded that bagels were given as gifts to a woman who had just given birth, and to her family”. The first reference to cholent is at the time of the Second Temple, and its Sephardi version played an unfortunate part in alerting servants to denounce “crypto-Jews” to the Inquisition, as families who made food before sunset on Friday for consumption on Saturday were more than likely to be Jewish. Ta’am is “an educational initiative with food”,

says Epstein. She hopes first to establish a social media presence and then wants to teach the recreation of Jewish recipes, both in schools and with young professionals. Eventually, Ta’am hopes to be running kosher culinary tours. Epstein explains: “A combination of a heritage trip, where we find out about the people who once lived there, and the communities that still exist through their food.” And, once the programmes are up and running, Epstein says she is confident it will be possible to fund young people who would like to work in the kosher food industry in the UK. US ENVOY ‘DID NOT REPORT ASSAULT’ An opposition Israeli politician has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to dismiss his ambassador to the US for failing to report sexual assault allegations against a top aide. Karin Elharrar said Ron Dermer should be recalled for not reporting warnings he received about David Keyes, Netanyahu‘s spokesman to foreign media. Last week, Julia Salazar, a candidate for New York’s state Senate, accused Keyes of sexual assault, as did a US journalist.

ISRAELI COURT ORDERS PROFESSOR’S RELEASE The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court has ordered the release of a professor with dual US-French citizenship who was arrested during a protest at a West Bank Bedouin village slated for demolition. After his release on Sunday, US-born Frank Romano, 66, who teaches law at Paris Nanterre University, said he was sent to a judge after refusing to sign a consent form for his immediate deportation. Romano, who was arrested last Friday during clashes at Khan al-Ahmar, a Bedouin village located outside of Jerusalem near Maale Adumim, reportedly returned there after his release.

Tributes to a ‘selfless hero’ Heartfelt tributes were paid this week to father-of-four Ari Fuld, 45, who was stabbed to death outside a shopping centre near Efrat in the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid his respects, tweeting: “With his last strength, Ari fought heroically against the terrorist and prevented a greater tragedy. citizen, who was assistant director of Standing Together, a non-governmental organisation that provides support for Israeli soldiers. His brother, Hillel, tweeted: “He lived as a hero and died as a hero. My big bro is gone. Thanks for the messages. Really. Just looking for oxygen now.” The attack happened on Sunday, when 17-year-old Palestinian, Khalil Jabarin, stabbed him outside a shopping mall near Efrat, at the Gush Etzion Junction south of Jerusalem. Fuld chased him, shooting him before collapsing to the ground. A civilian bystander also shot at Jabarin, who is from the West Bank village of Yatta near Hebron. He died at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, after resuscitation efforts failed. Jabarin was taken to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem where he is in moderate condition with multiple gunshot wounds. Haaretz cited a source close to the Jabarin family as saying the teenager informed his parents he planned to carry out an attack at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron. The family told security forces about their son’s plan, but could not find him near the tomb.

Nothing prepared me for Ari’s death BY SARRI SINGER

FOUNDER, STRENGTH TO STRENGTH As a survivor of a 2003 terrorist attack in Israel, and an advocate for other victims around the world, I thought I’d experienced the ultimate in pain and loss, but nothing could have prepared me for the horror I felt learning of the senseless murder of Ari Fuld. Ari was a great friend and always made time to catch up. He had this ability to make me laugh, even at the most difficult times, while always maintaining his focus of helping others and advocacy. A loving husband, father, son, and brother, Ari was family for everyone. The care and concern

Smiles: Sarri with Ari

he showed to everyone was extraordinary. Born in the US, he had made aliyah with his parents and siblings and he had the ability to cut through the clutter and explain the moral, historical and political justifications for Israel. Perhaps the most important lesson we can take from Ari is that we can all fight the lies being spread by the new faces of antisemitism. We can all defend Israel with his passion.

GOVE WON’T CONDEMN ORBAN Michael Gove this week refused to condemn Viktor Orban (pictured), as the Conservatives faced a backlash for opposing European condemnation of the controversial Hungarian prime minister. Tory MEPs opposed a censure motion against Hungary in the European Parliament earlier this week after years of criticism that Orban is anti-democratic, Islamophobic and antisemitic. Gove said he had “views” about Orban but was “not going to be drawn” into giving an assessment of individual leaders. He added he did not believe that “individual criticisms of the kind you are understandably tempting me to make necessarily help us in ensuring we get both solidarity on the issues that count and the best deal for Britain as we

leave the EU”. Gove said it was “not true” the Conservatives supported Orban despite Tory MEPs opposing the measures. Tory peer Lord Finkelstein, who is Jewish, described the move by Conservative MEPs as “very distressing” and it was condemned by the Board of Deputies. Its president Marie van der Zyl said: “We are very alarmed by the messages at the heart of Orban’s election campaign, including his comments about ‘Muslim invaders’, calling migrants ‘poison’, and the antisemitism in his campaign”.

An Argentine news outlet, La Nacion, has won an international press award after its journalists went through more than 40,000 audio recordings to understand the extent of Iran’s involvement in the 1994 AMIA Jewish centre bombing in Buenos Aires, killing 85 people. VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Atonement is in the air...

There was a sense – small, quiet, but emergent – of a tide turning at this week’s Manchester rally against antisemitism. Perhaps it was the sight of a chief rabbi talking about the unity of Jews and actually saying the words “Reform” and “Masorti” without the collective wrath of the strictly-Orthodox community breaking over his head. This is a Chief Rabbi who deals in realities, not wannabes. Ephraim Mirvis’ message was clear: we are all in this together. And what was striking about the rally – held, to almost universal amusement, in 100 percent typical Manchester weather – was that so many Labour MPs got that message, too. The overwhelming sense from almost every speaker was that something radical needs to change in the political firmament, and that non-Jews of goodwill are lining up to say so. There is, of course, criticism of this response, as is natural. Our community says it speaks with one voice, but we know that it doesn’t. Certainly everyone is in favour of rooting out antisemitism, which seems as natural to us as God and apple pie. But not everyone wants to take the same path to doing so: and the many angry shouts at the end of the rally, directed towards Labour (Co-op) Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell, which caused her to say “You don’t need to heckle me, I’m on your side”, should give people pause. When non-Jews line up in our support – and tweet that they are honoured to have done so – we should think carefully about how we respond. And it is unrealistic to expect Labour MPs to separate themselves from their party on stage at such an event. Nevertheless, despite the rain, everyone went home with much to think about in the week of Yom Kippur. Atonement is in the air.

Varied British-Jewish views The BBC television documentary We Are British Jews was an interesting short series that coralled Jews of different ages and opinions in Manchester and Israel. Manchester seemed cold, but quiet. Israel seemed warm, but displayed a society where war was at the forefront of people’s lives. We were shown two men who had lost daughters, one to the IDF and one to an Arab suicide bomber. An Arab farmer had building and land bulldozed; another was a known terrorist now free, a Jew had killed many Arabs in Hebron; every scene showed soldiers with guns. There were religious Jews in Jerusalem, nonreligious in a kibbutz, a British girl was pro-Arab and anti-IDF, a British man, 50, was pro-IDF and interested in becoming more religious.

Not one of the British Jews expressed a desire to settle in Israel, on a kibbutz in Jerusalem or by the sea. The most optimism was found in Akko, where Arabs and Jews hardly were at odds. The Arabs are not Palestinians, the Jews are not Israelis – if there is a model to follow then it is in Akko, possibly in Ashdod, but not in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The group should have visited Tiberius, where Jews and Arabs have always lived in peace. Norman Bright By email

‘Mr Corbyn? Yes it’s me again. You’re not going to believe this but I think I’ve spotted another irony!’

Your interview with John McDonnell was Labour propaganda to show him “engaging with the Jewish community” but just reinforced his position that Jeremy is misunderstood and he’s right behind him (Jewish News, 6 September). You gave us Corbyn’s Rosh Hashanah message, where he had the brass neck to state: “We will work to

eradicate the social cancer of antisemitism.” The only cause of this in the UK in 2018 is its architect and sponsor, the Labour leader, who has given free reign to antisemites to speak freely and unpunished. Opportunities to repeat their lies only gives false credibility. Russell Ballen By email

Too soon for kreplach? I was interested to read of the non-existence of kreplach in Cardiff (Jewish News, 14 September). I remember during my childhood in south-west London that my mother, who was Orthodox, used to make it for the meal immediately preceding Yom Kippur as it was the custom to eat it at that time. According to what I was taught at cheder, the symbolism around eating kreplach was that mingling the dough with the meat blended mercy with judgement. Maybe your reader was a bit early in expecting kreplach

Kreplach was eaten before the fast to be on sale for Rosh Hashanah. I have seen them for sale in kosher butchers locally although, being fussy, I prefer mine to be homemade. Anthony Spencer Shenley

FACE UP TO MISOGYNY Councillor Brian Gordon is mistaken (Letters, Jewish News, 6 September). One recognises people by their faces as well as their voices. Please explain what is immodest about showing one’s face if you are female. In many religions, women are treated as second class, or else men cannot control their feelings

towards women. I’ve no objection to people wearing fancy dress, such as nuns, rabbis wearing dog collars and wide brim hats or dressing up as 19th century Russian counts, but hiding the face effaces one as an individual. Manuel Ferris By email

WHY CHANGE LABOUR WON’T PROTECT US THE NAME? John McDonnell’s Party will continue I note a style change in the way you present a word that, sadly, appears as frequently as the words “the” and “and” in your publication. Why, after all these years, have you changed “anti-Semitism” to a hyphen-free “antisemitism”? Is this a grammatical or political decision? response to whether he would guarantee funding for Jewish security was answered with the perfect political reply in your interview with him (Jewish News, 6 September 2018). He stated: “We will review it.” This promises nothing and certainly does not say, “Yes, of course the Labour

A hero whose courage matched his modesty IAN AUSTIN, MP

LABOUR PARTY, DUDLEY NORTH

I

want to thank the Duke of Cambridge for unveiling the statue we produced of Major Frank Foley this week. It was a huge honour for the people of Dudley and a tribute to a great British hero. Ten thousand people – but many thousands more of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren – owe their lives to this great man who took huge personal risks to save Jewish people from the Holocaust. Under cover as the British passport control officer in pre-war Berlin, Frank Foley was in fact an intelligence officer. He would have been shot as a spy if the Nazis discovered what he was up to. He sheltered Jewish people in his own home and even rescued people from concentration camps, including a man called Ernst Ruppel who was imprisoned in Buchenwald but used papers he provided to escape to Britain with his wife and two young sons, one of whom, Ernest, was with us to see the statue

IT’S IMPRESSIVE TO SEE OUR FUTURE MONARCH TAKING SUCH A CLOSE INTEREST IN THE SHOAH unveiled. Michael Mamelock joined us as well. His father was also rescued from Buchenwald and I am so pleased that they were both able to meet His Royal Highness. The extraordinary thing about Frank Foley is that his courage, decency and determination were matched by his modesty. He retired in complete anonymity – never boasting about his heroism – to a quiet street in Stourbridge a few hundred yards from the park now graced by our tribute. I want the statue to help people learn how Frank Foley refused to stand by when people were being persecuted because of their race or religion.

His life and his courage show us that we all have a responsibility to stand up against intolerance and racism. When people are singled out or when extremists try to divide our communities on the grounds of race or religion, we should remember this great hero’s example and find it within ourselves to stand up for decency, fairness and tolerance. It is easy to oppose racism at events or in meetings where everyone agrees with you or, for those of us in politics, when it is to criticise your opponents, but it is completely meaningless if you are not prepared to do it when it is more difficult too. I also hope this statue will inspire people to learn the truth about the unique, incomparable evil of history’s greatest crime, the Holocaust and equip themselves with the arguments they need to challenge people who would deny or diminish the truth about history’s greatest crime. It is so impressive and so moving to see our future monarch taking such a close interest in the Holocaust as we saw with his recent visits to Stutthof and to Yad Vashem.

I want to thank Karen Pollock MBE and her colleagues at the Holocaust Educational Trust for all their help with this statue, and for the work they do all year round to educate young people about the ugly poison of prejudice, hatred and antisemitism. I am very grateful to everyone who has helped: the Birmingham sculpter Andy De Comyn and Steve Field, Dudley’s Borough Artist, who organised the project. My colleague Margot James the MP for Stourbridge, members of Frank Foley’s family, local residents and Ruth Jacobs from the Jewish community in Birmingham helped with the project too and George Osborne provided the funding when he was Chancellor. Finally, we all owe the author Michael Smith a huge debt. Without his brilliant book – The Spy Who Saved Ten Thousand Jews – none of us would know about this great man and his amazing bravery. Frank Foley is an inspiration to us all, a great British hero and hope you will read the book if you haven’t already – and please come to Stourbridge to see our tribute as well.

Strictly Come Shuffling an elevator pitch too far JENNI FRAZER

T

he New York comedian Josh Gondelman has had an idea of unsurpassed brilliance. He suggests: “On the Great Jewish Bake Off, the judges look off into the distance after tasting each pastry and tell a story about a long-dead relative who used to make a better version.” I cannot tell you how taken I was with this. I have been just bursting to discuss the superior offerings of Prue Leith’s Tante Sylvia or Paul Hollywood’s Bobbe Sarah. (And no, she is NOT Bubbe, Paul comes from the north, have some pride, here). Bread Week, obviously, would be Challah Week, Biscuit Week would be Kichel Week (with extra points for use of sultanas), and nobody would be allowed to go home without producing the ultimate hummus for Sandi and Noel to dip into while monitoring the bakers. And then I got to thinking about other shows with which we are familiar and wondering about Jewish versions.

I mean, food programmes are all very well but I feel that we have something to offer on every front, drama, reality shows, documentaries – you name it, we have something to add. So I’m planning on a new series of Vanity Fair, in which the heroine is just called Becky. It’s set in Edgware, obviously, with some scenes in south Manchester, for variety, and social climbing is absolutely the order of the day. We’re also going to have a Jewish version of Love Island, which will be called Fabulous Island, and all the contestants will be introduced thus: “This is Ben. His brother is a doctor”; or “this is Araminta, everyone calls her Minty, and no, of course she’s not appearing in that skimpy bikini, what, you want her to catch pneumonia? Strictly Come Dancing, everyone’s favourite Saturday night guilty pleasure in the winter months, will be given a Jewish twist. It will be called Strictly Come Shuffling and feature old films of Lionel Blair doing his thing together with as many barmitzvah

I HAVE BEEN JUST BURSTING TO DISCUSS THE SUPERIOR OFFERINGS OF PRUE LEITH’S TANTE SYLVIA OR PAUL HOLLYWOOD’S BOBBE SARAH

home movies as we can come up with. Tess and Claudia will be dressed head to foot in rhinestones, and the panel’s desk will be covered in vol-au-vents to munch in between dances. Re-creations of the Bottle Dance from Fiddler on the Roof will be mandatory and to bring the whole thing right up to date and be politically correct — well, of course, there will be NO MIXED DANCING. Moving on, I’m casting for a Jewish version of Coronation Street. There is already a taxi firm and a sweatshop (aka Underworld) so it’s quite well prepared, but it needs to raise its game with a few more accountants and some more coffee mornings. We know, of course, that the one and only Maureen Lipman has just arrived

in the Street but her role is not that of a Jewish grandmother, which is regrettable. I propose to change the name to Coronation Cul-De-Sac, improve the hairdresser’s (so old-fashioned) and set several scenes in a new nail bar. Diet Coke will be served everywhere and I’m afraid we won’t be having any transmissions on Friday nights any more, sorry. On the other hand there will be at least one sushi outlet, perhaps in Dev’s Corner Deli, and every problem will be solved with a decent double decaff skinny latte. Tea? Only Earl Grey, darling. You’ll excuse me now while I dream up new Jewish versions of Poldark and Bodyguard. Somehow, they may be one elevator pitch too far…

Here’s how we make tech tempting to girls CHANA KANZEN

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, JEWISH INTERACTIVE

L

ast year, Jewish Interactive (Ji) organised a hackathon for 50 children aged 12 to 18 of different faith backgrounds. While it was really successful, it was disappointing to see that only five out of the 50 were girls. I started to look into some statistics of girls involved in technology. PwC recently looked at the role of women in tech. In STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, women accounted for only 15 percent of employees. More distressingly, there are few signs that this number will rise without extra action, as

TECH CAN ALLOW GIRLS TO HAVE SIGNIFICANT IMPACT IN THEIR FIELD OF INTEREST

only 15.8 percent of undergraduates in STEM fields are women. Leadership examples can be key towards encouraging more participation among women, yet only five percent of leadership positions in STEM fields are held by women. In PwC’s report, The Female Millennial – A New Era of Talent, researchers found that young women want to work with employers with a strong history of inclusion, diversity, and equality. Many women see the low number of women in tech and choose to enter other fields. In our faith communities, this could be even lower. Seeing five girls out of 50 children suggested that perhaps the technology industry was not communicating effectively enough to girls – there are a full spectrum of jobs open to them, regardless of their interests and skill sets. With the negative aspects of social media often causing parents to resent technology (I’m one of them) it is not a career option we think of for our daughters – an option that can allow them to have significant impact in their field of interest, while being able to keep flexible hours, work from

anywhere and be paid competitive salaries. This gave Ji the impetus to approach female role models across faith communities, such as Karen Harris, managing director of MD of IntuDigital, a Jewish woman who has embraced technology and become an effective leader, without compromising her faith or womanhood. Together with other strong rolemodels in our community and other faith communities, including Intu, Xexec, Women of Wearables,

Soda, L Marks, Bomb Petite and Jewish News, Ji has created a Girls Do Tech event in Westminster on 6 and 7 October to show girls of all backgrounds that these careers are truly within their reach, no matter whether or not they are keen on maths, engineering and coding. All they have to do is sign up. Who knows where it will lead?  For more details on women in tech, see technative.io/women-in-tech2018-what-the-statistics-tell-us

Antisemitism, the left, Israel and Palestine ARIEL MOSHE

T

CO-FOUNDER, JEWISH VOICE UK

ime and again, when we discuss antisemitism on the left, we are met with the statements ‘AntiZionism isn’t antisemitism!’, ‘Arabs are Semites too!’ and ‘I don’t hate Jews, I just criticise Israel.’ And so on. Let’s forget for a moment that conflating Jews, antisemitism and Israel is both dangerous and, frankly, antisemitic. Let’s instead examine the above (and similar arguments) in isolation – starting with ‘AntiZionism isn’t antisemitism!’ Okay, first of all yes. Second of all no. Third, maybe. You see Zionism as a catch-all term doesn’t work. Zionism, much like left/ right/Conservative/libertarian, or pretty much any political concept, which means many things depending on who you ask. Zionism, in its simplest terms, is the belief of the right of Jews to self-determination in their ancestral homeland. However, even this basic form, is nuanced. For one, what constitutes the ancestral homeland of the Jewish people? If we’re talking biblical Israel, then the current state of Israel repre-

sents a mere fraction of that land. But that’s a very complicated topic I shan’t delve into here as I don’t want to write a trillion words. ‘Arabs are Semites too!’ is just linguistic game playing. Antisemitism has always meant a hatred of Jews, perhaps the word is not ideal but you cannot argue that because Arabs are a Semitic people that means they’re included under the term antisemitism. This is just a cynical tactic used by antisemites to try to defend their Jew-hate. ‘I don’t hate Jews, I just criticise Israel.’ That’s fair, I criticise Israel and I’m no more an antisemite than I am an Arsenal fan. But let’s look into this position. First, it is important to have context. Are you criticising Israel by using terms such as “apartheid”, or referencing Nazi Germany? If the answer is yes, then I’m sorry but you’re part of the problem and possibly an antisemite. Are you criticising other nations in the region oppressing minorities? People will say this is whataboutary but, for me, it is about consistency. If you criticise the world’s only Jewish state, a nation that by current trends will soon be home to the majority of the world’s Jews, but do not criticise any other state, then there is a distinct possibility you

I SEE MYSELF AS A PRO-PALESTINIAN ZIONIST AND DON’T CONSIDER THIS TO BE CONTRADICTORY

just hate Jews. I’m a pro-Palestinian Zionist and I do not consider that a contradictory position. I think it quite possible to support the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination while also being a Zionist and supporting the Jewish right to self-determination. I see no conflict in that. I remain hopeful that peace will happen in my lifetime, but that peace requires those on the outside of the conflict to speak less and listen more because while our mouths are open our minds are closed. Peace will not come from outside discourse thousands of miles away, peace will come from within the conflict. From ordinary Palestinians and

Israelis, the people who live with the conflict daily and who want peace more than do any of us living safely in Europe. Now let me get back to antisemitism on the left. This is nothing new. Proudhon, Marx, Bakunin…they were saying hugely disparaging things about the Jews before the Shoah. Communist Russia was persecuting Jews for a good amount of time before Kristallnacht. We often hear that the far-right is the biggest threat to the Jewish community. I agree. However, the pernicious nature of left antisemitism means we cannot simply ignore it or say “well it is worse from the other side”. Antisemitism, regardless of which ideology it originates from, represents an existential threat to Jews. My primary issue with the whole “the far-right is the bigger threat” argument is simple; the far-right is a mess. Nobody in the UK is going to put any far-right figure into a position of power. The hard-left, on the other hand? Well, many would cite the recent elections for Labour’s National Executive Committee as an example of the hard-left gaining significant control of Her Majesty’s Opposition.

1 INSPIRING TRIPS

More than 100 people have returned from Aish UK-organised trips, including a monthlong social action visit to South Africa, volunteering, interning and learning programmes in Israel (pictured), and a summer internship in New York and Washington DC in partnership with the Forum for Jewish Leadership. Aish UK executive director Rabbi Daniel Rowe said: “It is so energising to feel the buzz across the country as young Jews are engaging with the wisdom, depth and beauty of Judaism in an exciting and fun way. So many of the young Jews who took part this summer are now taking on leadership roles and helping shape and run Aish programmes in the year ahead.”

Arranged by the charity GIFT, they sung a selection of their well-known songs, as well as composing songs using names of patients and staff. Band manager Rafi Sandler said: “We make a living from making people happy and putting smiles on their faces. One smile from the patients meant the world to us. We hope we made a difference in their life, even if just for that day.”

3 SCIENCE AWARD

Torah Temimah Primary School has gained the prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM), one of only 230 schools nationally to have gained the award this month. Rabbi Yitzchak Freeman said: “I’m delighted we have gained this important recognition of our commitment to high standards in secular as well as kodesh education. We have won this award thanks to the hard work and commitment of all our teachers, led by our superb head of science, Natalie Berman. Crucially, we have achieved this without compromising our school’s Torah values in any way.”

IVF campaign/ Lifestyle

IN THIS SECTION: Travel 25 Competition 33

The gift of new life A new IVF campaign has been inspired by the stories of survivors Leslie Kleinman and Dr Gisella Perl, who was forced to work under Dr Mengele, writes Jenni Frazer

A

survivor’s tragic story, retold in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the inspirational memory of doctor Gisella Perl and the work of a reproductive specialist have all come together to create a remarkable campaign launched this week to help people seeking IVF treatment.

Life For A Life aims to help Jewish couples around the world who have been unable to have children, with money going to fertility clinics in six leading cities – London, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Montreal, New York and Toronto, together with two clinics in Israel.

The campaign, which aims to raise £126,000 in 40 days, has been launched by JRoots, which runs heritage and education tours. In June, Rabbi Naftali Schiff, founder and executive director of Jewish Futures Trust, an umbrella body to which JRoots belongs, accompanied Southendbased Holocaust survivor Leslie Kleinman, 89, to Auschwitz. Kleinman was speaking about his experiences to a JRoots group from South Africa, which included fertility expert, Dr Lawrence Gobetz. The group heard Kleinman’s personal story – all seven of his siblings died in the Holocaust – and also the story of Gisella Perl, a Jewish doctor forced to work under Josef Mengele and terminate Left: Leslie Kleinman as a young child with his family; and below, with Rabbi Naftali Schiff; Inset: Dr Gisella Perl, who was forced to abort Jewish babies

the pregnancies of Jewish women in the camps. Dr Perl survived and practiced as a gynaecologist in New York before moving to Israel, where she died in 1988. She undertook her post-Holocaust life’s work with the mantra “life for a life”, seeing it as her mission to help those suffering from infertility. Rabbi Schiff told Jewish News: “We were standing outside Block 10, the experimentation block, while the group heard these two stories. Dr Gobetz said he worked with young Jewish couples in South Africa in just this field, helping them to have children”. So far, 170 babies have been born in South Africa as a result of financial support given by the locally-based charity Malka Ella

Fertility Fund. Rabbi Schiff suggested that in the name of Kleinman’s lost seven siblings, there should be a campaign which “commits to life” and helps seven families. After returning to London, he contacted a number of fertility clinics and found the average cost of treatment was around £18,000 per live birth. “We decided to launch this campaign under the auspices of JRoots, where we are trying to raise seven times £18,000 for these Jewish fertility charities”. He added: “This is by no means a replacement project for those who died in the Holocaust. It could not be. But it is a simple commitment to life, a statement of positivity.” Dr Gobetz, speaking from Johannesburg, said: “This issue is solely to do with helping young Jewish couples. It is the symbolism of taking inspiration from Leslie Kleinman’s and Gisella Perl’s stories, and bringing new life into the world”. At the time of going to press, more than £30,000 had been donated. Money raised from the UK will go towards Chana, the campaign’s fertility charity partner in Britain.  causematch.com/en/ projects/lifeforalife

The following quotes are taken from our evaluation forms – this is what our students say: One studying with Rabbi Professor Jonathan Magonet writes, “last night’s class was outstanding for so many reasons, most of them due to Jonathan’s magical and accessible way of leading us. This time we were all very engaged and spent much of the class discussing and debating many aspects of the text we were studying. It was quite free flow, and arose from our familiarity with each other and the questions we all had”.

Another student appreciates the “inspirational professors, in-depth analysis of the material, creative interpretations and small groups”. A participant who has never studied in a Progressive Jewish context before writes, “the brief experience I had of Progressive Judaism at Leo Baeck College brought me a sense of possibilities and complementary visions. It also enriched my knowledge of the Bible. This was done in a welcoming and respectful atmosphere without any one being judgmental”. The duration of courses for the autumn semester ranges from 4 to 8 weeks long with one course taking place over two Sundays. Course prices have been reasonably set at about £15 per session, with returning students, of which there are many, enjoying a 10% discount. Find your me time and study at Leo Baeck College. Travel / Lifestyle Chillon Castle

Swiss you were here Lucy Daltroff travels to Lake Geneva, where Mary Shelley wrote her epic horror story Frankenstein, and discovers the sad fate of its medieval Jewish community

T

he charms of Lake Geneva are synonymous with the natural beauty of Switzerland. Less wellknown perhaps are the strong literary connections of this small European country. T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, Voltaire, Henry James and Charles Dickens are but a few of the major literary names that have been inspired by the sweeping Swiss landscape. So too was Mary Shelley, whose famous novel Frankenstein was published 200 years ago, so it seemed more than apt to mark the occasion with a tour of the area where the story was conceived and many of the scenes are set. Mary Godwin was just 18 when she left home and ran away with her married lover, Percy Shelley. In 1818, they left for the the shores of Lake Geneva, accompanied by their son, William and her step-sister Claire Clairmont, who was pregnant by Shelley’s friend, Lord Byron. Although the Shelley party had their own accommodation, much of their time was spent at the Villa Diadoti where Byron was staying. The villa still exists today in the elegant suburb of Cologny. Although it is privately owned, I was able

to peer at the house from a nearby meadow, taking in the view of the largest lake in Western Europe, the city of Geneva and at the same time admiring its handsome white frontage and chic green shutters. I saw it on a sun-drenched day, but 200 years ago circumstances were less favourable. The eruption of Mount Tambora, in what is now Indonesia, disrupted all the European weather patterns and Switzerland was plagued with incessant rain. Confined to the house, Byron suggested to the assembled company that they should take part in a competition to write the most frightening horror story. Mary took the longest time making her choice, but listening avidly to the discussions between Shelley and Byron on automated beings and the possibility of reanimating a corpse, she came up with her masterpiece – now often regarded as the first gothic novel. I met with David Spurr, professor of English at the University of Geneva and authority on the book, who showed me a copy of the original manuscript. It was interesting to see there were a number of suggestions in the margins written by Shelley himself, elevating the narrative in a

poetic and descriptive way and showing a skill that the young Mary herself may have lacked. Mary first published her masterpiece anonymously, as women authors at the time were rare and unpopular. Not much happened until the respected Sir Walter Scott wrote a favourable review. This did the trick – and sales boomed. The monster in Frankenstein, who remains unnamed throughout the book, murders his first victim, William, in the Plainpalais quarter of Geneva. It is now one of the most diverse areas of this, the second city of Switzerland, teeming as it is with university students, bars and restaurants. In 2014, on the precise site of this first murder, a huge bronze statute was erected depicting the creature. It’s a ghoulish reminder of the pathos of a fictional monster, who carries an expression of both sadness and evil. Just 20km from central Geneva is Salève, a mountain in the French Prealps often referred to as the “Balcony of Geneva”. In Frankenstein, the monster leaps up the gnarly crags while escaping his crimes, causing his creator to lament: “Who could arrest a creature capable of scaling the overhanging sides of Mont Salève?” For anyone who doesn’t want to make the ascent on foot, you can pay just a few Swiss Francs for a ride in the speedy cable car. Taking the first one of the day avoids the crowds. At the top is one of the most spectacular panoramas in Europe, especially on a sunny day. The views over both France and Switzerland are quite breath-taking. I could see fields, rivers, lakes and even CERN and, in the distance, Mont Blanc. There are also plenty of things to do at the

summit, with a choice of hiking options and an excellent, fairly-priced restaurant. Beautiful as Geneva is, it is really all about the lake. There are a number of ways to see it at close hand and enjoy the famous Jet d’Eau Fountain, installed in 1886. I enjoyed a tour on board the Belle Epoque boat, “La Suisse”, which culminated at the impressive Chateau de Chillon, a medieval fortress and later a prison. It was here, that once the weather had perked up a bit, Byron arrived with Shelley in June 1816 and was inspired to write the other literary highlight of this region, his poem, “The Prisoner of Chillon”. This association has made the castle the most visited historical building in Switzerland. It’s a huge place set among stunning scenery, yet steeped in history. Organized tours point out Byron’s possible signature on a column in the dungeon but my guide went on to tell me a little more about the castle’s sinister past, which is not quite so welldocumented. Near to Chillon is the village of Villeneuve, where from 1284 there was a Jewish presence. When the Black Death arrived, rumours persisted that it was the community who had poisoned the wells and springs. As a consequence, in 1348 the entire Jewish population was rounded up and arrested. Some committed suicide, while the rest were put in Chillon’s dungeons where they were tortured – including the children. A promise was made during this horrendous time that they would be forgiven if they confessed. Someone did, in front of a tribunal. Of course the forgiveness was not upheld and eventually all were murdered by the side of the lake.

Torah For Today

SEDRA Haazinu

RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF As the Jewish people are poised to enter the Promised Land, Moshe delivers his final message as a song – fusing past, present and future. He reminds the people where they are coming from, and offers sage advice for the challenges they will face as an independent nation in their own land. When we read through this week’s sedra, the penultimate one in the Torah, we are treated to a history lesson like no other. As a boy, I saw how history bored some of my classmates to tears; facts, figures, names, battles were to be memorised and regurgitated. As director of JRoots, I have had the privilege of taking thousands of young Jews to Poland. One of the most powerful quotes they encounter is attributed to George Santayana, which is written at the entrance of Auschwitz block 4: “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” The Torah uses the word zikaron, memory, to teach us that history is our story, an ongoing narrative that is part of our lives. Haazinu is a history lesson set to a song. The Hebrew word for song is shir, which can also mean a “chain” (See Mishna Shabbat 5:1). This evokes powerful images of seder night, where we sing about our past, present and future. Singing passionately about our identity infuses it with life and safeguards and protects our heritage for future generations like shiryon, a suit of armour. It is no coincidence our sedra falls between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, when we also express our hopes, dreams and aspirations for ourselves, the Jewish people, and the world at large through singing our prayers. May we all have an uplifting Yom Kippur, one where we unite as a people, who sing of a better world and then go and turn that dream into a reality.

What does the Torah say about... Russia’s Salisbury sightseers? BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov (pictured) were named as the suspected attackers of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal who, in broad daylight, smeared deadly Novichok on the door handle of his home. They left the scene, smiling at their endeavour. So, what does the Torah say about smiling assassins? In early biblical history, in the time of nascent Israelite royalty, the Amalekite who witnessed the death of King Saul on Mount Gilboa celebrated it in the presence of David, his son-in-law, thinking that he would be happy his persecuting father-inlaw was dead. David was so disgusted that he executed the Amalekite soldier in the Israelite ranks.

Perhaps the most well-known biblical story is how Haman returned home happy and glad of heart that he had sealed the fate of the Jews of Persia to doom. He ultimately hanged along with his co-conspiring sons and his militia were destroyed, giving us the festival of Purim – the festival of the downfall of smiling assassins and partying perpetrators of genocide.

THE PROVERS OF SOLOMON TEACH: ON THE DOWNFALL OF YOUR ENEMY, DO NOT REJOICE

The Proverbs of Solomon teach: “On the downfall of your enemy, do not rejoice and in his stumbling let your heart not be glad.” Our rabbis repeat this teaching word for word for emphasis in the Ethics of the Fathers, which is the text central to classical Judaism teaching crucial elements of wisdom, jurisprudence and ethical behaviour. Although it is natural to be relieved to see an enemy dead and to celebrate an end to tyranny, it is always a tragedy that such action is required. Earlier still, the Midrash tells of the three counsellors of the Egyptian Pharaoh – Balaam, Jethro and Job. They were consulted on the fate of the Israelites. Only Jethro, a heathen priest, spoke up for the Israelites as he was not happy to see them suffer and was rewarded with Jewish grandchildren.  Rabbi Abel serves Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation and is padre to HM Armed Forces

The Bible Says What? ‘Bring together the four species on Succot’

Organ donation is a tenet of our Judaism

BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER Succot arrives surprisingly quickly each year, poignantly reminding us that the seasons are changing. Our celebration in the Sukkah may even be interrupted, as the rain or cold tells us that winter is coming. The Torah commands us to bring together four species of plant on Succot: “Fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook”. We recognise these as the lulav and etrog. In the Book of Nehemiah, we are told of Ezra the Scribe reading this passage to the people and then telling them to gather the four species order to build a succah. It seems like, at their time, this biblical instruction was pragmatic – instructing us about what to build a succah from. Why do we now combine these elements into a symbol we parade around our communities? Darkness and winter are times associated with fear and a need for

Progressively Speaking

strength in our religious tradition. This is a time where we would have needed each other more than ever. In bringing the four species together and waving them around our synagogues, we unite symbols of all shapes and sizes, tastes, textures and smells: our ritual is not complete without this diversity. We make a show of bringing these disparate items together at a moment when we realise our own vulnerability in the succah. We are declaring the importance of fortifying ourselves for the winter months ahead. The message is clear – now is the time to consciously bring together our entire community as one, at a time when we need each other the most. Only with all of our qualities combined are we complete and ready to move forwards with the strength we need to overcome any challenge.  Laura Janner-Klausner is Reform Judaism’s senior rabbi

BY RABBI DANNY RICH This month the NHS Blood and Transplant Service marked national Organ Donation Week, which ended as Rosh Hashanah began. The purpose of the campaign was to “raise awareness of the important need for families to talk about organ donation to help save lives”. It works – some 34,000 people joined the NHS Organ Donor Register during the week-long initiative in 2017. But to fulfil our guiding Jewish principles, as important as awareness-raising campaigns such as these are, they are still not enough. I hope the British Government will soon go a step further and introduce an ‘opt out’ policy so people no longer need to join a list in order to be an organ donor. Many Progressive Jewish voices have long advocated such an ‘opt out’ system whereby it is assumed that, unless an individual has made known his or her wishes not

to donate organs, consent will be deemed to have been given. The medical rationale is simple. The NHS Blood and Transplant Service estimates that, while 4,000 lives are saved by donation each year, some 1,000 of the 10,000 people on the waiting list die as they await a suitable organ. There is also a strong message from Judaism as to why this is so important. Our religion places human life and its preservation as a major priority. Although not without some restrictions – including caring for the living and treating the human copse with respect – becoming a donor opens up the possibility of fulfilling the mitzvah of pikuach nefesh: the saving of a life. Liberal Judaism would supplement this traditional understanding with an affirmation that, because of its value of individual rights and personal liberty within the

boundaries of the secular law, it values the autonomy of an informed conscience. Liberal Judaism teaches the highest capacity that humans possess is to act rationally and morally. And what could be more rational and moral than giving another human being life in the face of one’s own death? The Hebrew Prophet Ezekiel declares: “A new heart will I give you, a new spirit within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” A diseased or non-functioning organ in an otherwise healthy person is a ‘heart of stone’ whereas a healthy organ in a deceased person has the potential to be a reviving ‘heart of flesh’. How ironic that humanity now possesses the ability to literally fulfil Ezekiel’s metaphor!  Rabbi Danny Rich is the senior rabbi of Liberal Judaism

FREEMANS SOLICITORS Dear Rebekah My husband and I are divorcing. What are my rights to stay in the family home? Justine Dear Justine This is often the most important question people have when getting divorced. You and your spouse will

continue to have the right to remain living in the family home as the court views the family home as a joint asset – whether or not it is in joint names. It is not always easy to continue living under the same roof as your spouse when you are divorcing and, in some circumstances where there is domestic abuse, the court has the power to order the other spouse to leave. If the family home is in the sole name of your spouse, you can enter a Notice of Home Rights against the property with the Land Registry to prevent your spouse from trying to sell the property without your knowledge or consent. threatening illness or age and deterioration are taking their toll. Being able to face the difficult conversations honestly and openly is something we are often not prepared for, whatever our backgrounds. The truth is often that people feel very relieved when innermost thoughts are expressed and even recorded. Speaking openly can give peace of mind, reduce emotional burdens and reassure others close by. Being open about illness or dying, and facing whatever comes together, may make situations easier to cope with. The person at the centre of the conversation can give instruction on how and where they would like to be cared for and

nominate someone to help make decisions for them. This enables the person’s inner life to be preserved, preventing misunderstandings and puts the person very firmly in the ‘driving seat’ of their own life. At SweetTree Home care services, we specialise in caring for people at the end of their lives and facilitate care and support that flexes around personal care needs, health needs and promoting the best quality of life possible. We ensure we understand what each person wants, so they can get on living day to day as normally as possible. SweetTree helps people to live well to the end of life by adding ‘life to days’. Dan’s tri-ing weekend representing London TRIATHLON Triathlete Dan Levine endured a mixed weekend representing London at the Inter Regional Championships. The 13-year-old competed as part of a team of 12 London triathletes, at the event which took place at Mallory Park near Leicester. The first day saw the individual races take place, which due to him struggling to get out of his wetsuit during the first transition, saw him cross the line in 24th place. Sunday saw the mixed relays take place, which saw Dan help the team finish to an overall 13th place out of 49 regional relay teams. He said: “The weekend as a whole was long, tiring and nerve racking, but made for a memorable, amazing experience.

“I struggled with my wetsuit in the individual race, though claimed the fifth fastest cycle, before having to endure a painful run. I had better luck with the transition in the relays, but more importantly helped the team beat our South East rivals by a matter of seconds.” Dan, who along with his older brother Joe, have been competing in triathlons for the past six years, have already enjoyed success this year, the younger sibling winning the London region TriStar series, with Joe finishing the youth competition in third. Both are also set to take part in the Inter-Regional Duathlon in November, which will be between London and South East region. Israeli gymnast Linoy Ashram won an historic medal for her country as she claimed silver at the all-around finals at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships. It was the first time an Israeli has finished runner-up at the tournament. The 19-year-old said: “It still hasn’t sunk in, it will take a few more days to, then we draw a line and move on. I’m glad I represented Israel honorably and I’ll continue doing so. I hope I’m opening the door for other girls.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told her: “This is an outstanding achievement. You caused all of us to be proud. This lifts the pride of all of us.”
