Medical first as Palestinian baby gets transplant from Jewish child
A desperately-ill six-monthold Palestinian baby is bravely fighting for his life this week after receiving a heart transplant from a Jewish child, writes Jenni Frazer. The surgical team at Israel’s Sheba Hospital in Ramat Gan are waiting, hoping and praying after a unique operation – the first time heart transplant surgery hasbeen performed on such a young child at the hospital and the first time a Palestinian baby has received a heart transplant from a Jewish child. The Palestinian boy, Musa, was born with a variety of life-threatening conditions, chief of which were tumours surrounding his heart. Doctors in his home city of Ramallah, in the West Bank, were unable to cope with his growing medical problems and sent him across the border to Sheba’s Safra Children’s Hospital on several previous occasions to treat and stabilise him. But three weeks ago Musa’s condition began to deteriorate,

his heart reaching “end stage” failure. Dr David Mishaly, chief surgeon at Sheba’s paediatric and congenital heart surgery unit,

said: “There were several miracles associated with this complicated surgery. There is no such thing in the Palestinian Authority as an organ donor or organ waiting list. “While organ donor and waiting lists exist in Israel, there was no Israeli baby on the waiting list when Musa was brought to Sheba in very critical condition.

But by a miracle, Musa was able to receive a new heart from a Jewish child, whose parents had agreed a few hours earlier to the donation.” The Jewish child had died aged 17 after months of a chronic disease, the hospital said. Dr Mishaly added: “The transplant surgery was quite difficult because Musa was very sick to begin with. He survived the transplant, which is a miracle in itself. Though Musa has a chance of surviving, there are numerous complications that we will have to deal with in the future.” The baby has now made it through a week since the complex surgery and is “fighting for his life”. The staff, a mix of Jewish and Israeli Arab doctors and nurses, had worked “24/7” to save Musa’s life, said Dr Mishaly. He said the team owed “a debt of gratitude to the Jewish parents of the child who died, and agreed to donate his heart for this surgery. It was a challenge for us, because we are all aware of the complications Continued on page 6

News / Haley quits UN / Golan Heights / MP protest
Israel’s champion at the UN announces shock resignation Israeli and Jewish leaders from around the world have paid tribute to outgoing US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, after she announced her resignation. After two years championing Israel at the world forum, Israeli leaders expressed their gratitude for the way she tackled anti-Israel bias and oversaw the US embassy move to Jerusalem, as well as the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. During her time at the UN, she led the US withdrawal from a UN human rights body critical of Israel and pulled US funding for Palestinian authorities and refugee programmes, positions that put the Trump administration at odds with allies. News of her pending departure came as
a shock to diplomats and world leaders, who had become accustomed to her combative style, which she used to threaten countries voting against the US embassy move. She became known for her undiplomatic words, describing the UN Human Rights Council as “a cesspool bias” and “a protector of Auctioneers of human rights abusers” that targets Israel while ignoring atrocities elsewhere. 15 Wycombe Gardens, Golders 95 Old Christchurch Road, Green, London NW11 8AN Bournemouth, Dorset BH1 1EP As one of Donald Trump’s Prime site with Planning for 4 new build Prime Grade II Listed Building most trusted lieutenants, 4 Bedroom Semi-Detached Houses. comprising 2 Ground Floor Shops, Haley tried to distance her Each in excess of 2,000 sq ft, with off (with 5 Flats sold off), producing boss from the Obama adminstreet parking and private gardens. £44,518 per annum. istration, which had refused Reserve below £3,000,000 Reserve below £525,000 to veto an anti-settlement Auction Date: Wednesday 24th October 2018 resolution in the days before (commencing at 12pm) Barack Obama left office, triggering criticism from Israel. ingly condemned the US embassy move to Jerusalem, Haley reacted furiously at the “insult”, saying she would be “taking names” and swearing that it would not be forgotten. This garnered praise from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said she had “lit a candle of truth” and “dispelled the darkness... On Chanukah, you spoke like a Maccabee.” As news of her resignation broke this week, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin thanked her “from the depths of our heart on behalf of all the citizens of Israel”. He said she was “an uncompromising advocate of American policy towards the Middle East and Israel, and never wavered in her support for our clear right to maintain the security of our region”, He added: “More than once, by speaking clearly, she tore away the cynical smokescreen
that was masking what the UN and international organisations were really doing... “I thank Ambassador Haley for her courage and for a term of office that will be remembered as a turning point in the relations between the US and international organisations, and the discriminatory stance they have taken towards Israel on more than one occasion.” Netanyahu tweeted: “Thank you for standing for the truth and exposing hypocrisy at the UN. Just as the people of Israel are grateful for the rock solid support Trump has provided Israel in the Oval Office, we are grateful for the rock solid support you’ve provided Israel at the UN.” Likewise, Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett, who leads the religious-nationalist Jewish Home party, said: “On behalf of the Israeli people, thank you for what you’ve done for Israel. We will not forget.”
Russia won’t back PALESTINE ACTIVISTS Golan sovereignty DISRUPT MP SURGERY Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has confirmed Moscow would not countenance Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The spiked comments from the senior Kremlin insider yesterday stood in stark contrast to those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu just days earlier, in which he promised continuing Israeli control over the occupied territory. “As long as it is dependent on me, the Golan will remain under Israeli sovereignty,” said Netanyahu on Monday. “Otherwise, we will get Iran and Hezbollah on the banks of the Kinneret [the Sea
of Galilee].” The Golan Heights plateau was captured from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967 and remains disputed territory. Israel effectively annexed it in 1981, but the UN Security Council immediately ruled this “null and void”. The UN has since kept a small peacekeeping force along the 160-mile buffer zone. In comments reported by Russia’s Tass news agency, Lavrov said: “The status of the Golan Heights is determined by the resolutions of the UN Security Council. To change this status bypassing the Security Council, would be a direct violation of these resolutions.”
Up to 30 pro-Palestinian activists disrupted Dudley residents’ monthly surgery with Labour MP Ian Austin last Saturday, to condemn his “silence” over the actions of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). The noisy protesters, organised by Dudley Palestine Solidarity Group (DPSG), said they were “demanding that Ian Austin condemn the actions of the IDF who have killed innocent men, women, and children”. Austin twice confronted the activists for disrupting his surgery at the Paradise Centre at Buffery Park, as they chanted “shame on you”. It was later reported that one protester
accused Austin of being “paid by Zionists”. The MP said: “People have the right to protest wherever they like, but they could consider whether an MP’s advice surgery – where often vulnerable people seek private help – is the best time and place so.” Austin said he contacted the organiser and offered to arrange a meeting but “they stood and shouted at me in the park instead”. However, DPSG tweeted that constituents “have been asking for many years”, adding: “We respectfully attended Ian’s surgery to request he openly condemns the IDF. He refused to listen.”

Ahmad ‘proud’ to fight racism The prime minister’s special representative for freedom of religion and belief has given a passionate commitment to the UN General Assembly that the UK Government will do everything it can stamp out antisemitism. Conservative peer Lord Ahmad, one of the most senior Muslims in the country, formerly worked with Prime Minister Theresa May in the Home Office as communities minister. He said he was “proud” to reaffirm Britain’s commitment to “combating the scourge of antisemitism”. Britain had been the first government to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, he added, and urged other governments to follow suit. He said: “As global leaders, we must act responsibly to ensure future generations
reflect on the lessons from the Holocaust and recognise our shared humanity. “Seven decades after the Holocaust, society still cannot say that antisemitism has been eradicated; nor can it claim that genocide is a thing of the past. As recently as August 2018, the United Nations concluded that the Burmese military had inflicted genocide against the Rohingya. “The UK Government is committed to religious tolerance in the UK and globally. Through the government-backed Holocaust Educational Trust and their world-leading Lessons from Auschwitz programme, 36,000 students have visited Auschwitz – and then supported this next generation to share their learning with fellow students and to fight antisemitism and all forms of hatred in every community of the land. “The British Government is determined
that the genocide of six million Jews will never be forgotten. A spectacular and poignant Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre will be erected right next to Parliament, reminding all of us of the depths to which humanity can sink, and the importance of robustly opposing all forms of bigotry.” Lord Ahmad said he was confident and optimistic about future relations between Britain’s diverse communities. He said he believed there had been “a real step change among progressive-thinking imams” in the Islamic community, towards those who “peddle hatred against the Jewish community”. At the core of British society, the peer said, “right-minded people will want to change things. The tapestry of Britain today is enriched by this legacy between our faiths, and our attitude to combating hatred”.

BLOGGER’S POST REMOVED Boroughs urged over IHRA Posts by a Jewish blogger in London have been removed from US-based writing platform Medium after he said that last month’s antisemitism rally in Manchester was supported by the far-right. Following a complaint from the Board of Deputies, the site took action against Tony Greenstein (pictured), who has been expelled from the Labour Party. He currently is vicechair of Labour Against the Witch-hunt, which argues that the party’s antisemitism scandal is purposefully overblown and counts MP Chris Williamson among its supporters. The Board drew attention to Greenstein’s article titled: ‘NW [North West] Friends of Israel, Tommy Robinson and the EDL [English Defence League] are Holding a Demonstration Against Antisemitism in Manchester.’ A Board spokesman said: “This is a complete lie. There was absolutely no involvement of the EDL and Tommy Robinson; indeed the organisations involved have denounced Tommy Robinson multiple times.” The statement added that speakers included Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Board president Marie van der Zyl and MPs such as Ivan Lewis, Lucy Powell, James Frith, Kate Green, Chris Green and Mary Robinson, and was supported
by Home Secretary Sajid Javid. A spokeswoman for Medium said: “We have reviewed the case and found the account to be in violation of our rules. It has been suspended.” Greenstein had urged support for a counter-protest to the Manchester rally, promoting Jewish Voice for Labour and said it mustered 200 supporters. In his article, which remains on his blog, he said the Board and MPs were “taking part in a demonstration against ‘antisemitism’ organised by a group that is friends of the British farright including the EDL and Football Lads Alliance… Step forward NW Friends of Israel.” He added: “This demonstration has nothing to do with antisemitism and everything to do with supporting Israeli apartheid.”
The Leaders’ Committee of London Councils has urged London boroughs that have not yet accepted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism to adopt it. It comes after a meeting of the influential body on Tuesday, in which all boroughs were urged to adopt the definition, together with its working
examples and to include it within councils’ constitutions and codes of conduct. In December, then Communities Secretary Sajid Javid wrote to councils urging them to “strongly consider” adopting the IHRA definition in full. Since then, 18 councils are understood to have done so. There are 32 boroughs in London, plus the City of
London. At the meeting, committee members were presented with a draft motion for councils to adopt the definition. Board of Deputies’ Gillian Merron said the body’s support “shows that London’s local authority leaders from across the political spectrum are treating the issue with due seriousness”.
Pro-Hitler candidate jailed A 79-year-old election candidate who stirred up antisemitic hatred, calling for “new and better death camps”, has been jailed. Barbara Fielding-Morriss (pictured), whose manifesto praised Adolf Hitler and likened Jews and immigrants to termites, was given a 12-month prison sentence after a judge condemned her lack of remorse
for the “vile” offences. Fielding-Morriss, a candidate in Stoke-on-Trent Central at a by-election and the general
election last year, was convicted in June of three offences of stirring up racial hatred between September 2016 and February 2017. Sentencing her at Stafford Crown Court, Recorder Julian Taylor said: “What I found particularly sinister during the trial was your attitude. You showed no remorse whatsoever.”

News / Board disputes
Move to ‘censure’ critics of Board vice president Jewish leaders are preparing a “motion of censure” against two men trying to oust the Board of Deputies’ senior vice president for expressing concern about a new Israeli law. The fierce kickback was aimed at Jacob Lyons, the Deputy for Western Marble Arch Synagogue, and Martin Rankoff, the Deputy for Redbridge Synagogue, for trying to instigate a vote of no-confidence (VONC) in Dr Sheila Gewolb. The pair accused Gewolb of breaching the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism “in applying double standards to Israel”. However, in explosive language, their use of the new and controversial definition of antisemitism to try to oust a senior Jewish representative for expressing concerns about an Israeli law was described as “deeply wrong and morally grotesque”. Efforts are now underway to censure Lyons and Rankoff for “bringing the Board into disrepute” and deputies are being urged not to sign the VONC motion against Gewolb for risk of it being a spectacular own goal, after a two-year fight over IHRA. The furore stems from a statement Gewolb made on behalf of the Board this
Board senior vice president Sheila Gewolb, centre, with colleagues
summer after Israeli politicians passed a law demoting Arabic, confirming East Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and stating Jewish settlements as a “national value”. Gewolb said the Board felt the new law may be “regressive” and vowed to write to the ambassador. No senior member of the Board’s leadership team distanced themselves from her statement. On Tuesday night, a group calling themselves “concerned deputies” hit back against the two men, sending an open letter to fellow deputies lambasting the pair’s use of the new IHRA definition to label Gewolb
as antisemitic, while calling for a “motion of censure” against Lyons and Rankoff. “The Nation State law was the subject of fierce debate both inside Israel and by communities across the diaspora, and was defended and criticised by leaders and organisations throughout the Jewish world,” they wrote. “While individual deputies may agree or disagree with these arguments, the claim that in voicing this opinion Dr Gewolb was expressing antisemitic views is not just false but severely damaging to the ongoing fight against antisemitism in the UK.”

ACTIVISTS WANT BOARD BOYCOTT Orthodox activists are being told not to claim to represent the Charedi community, after urging MPs and London Mayor Sadiq Khan to boycott this year’s Board of Deputies annual dinner, writes Jenni Frazer. The backlash against Orthodox Jews including Shraga Stern, who argues that the Board does not represent the interests of all British Jews, began in their own Orthodox community on Tuesday. It follows a letter sent to invited MPs from Stern, who plans a protest outside the dinner, because the Board only represents those affiliated to their synagogues. “They cannot truthfully claim to represent the majority of British Jews,” said Stern. “In reality, they represent only around 20 percent of British Jews. The remaining 80 percent of Jews, a large proportion of which is made up by the Charedi Jews, do not consider their views are represented.” He accuses the deputies of “colluding (in all likelihood
illegally) with Ofsted to destroy our community. We have a QC opinion in our possession confirming this”. But on social media letters began circulating from users purporting to be Orthodox Jews annoyed that Stern had signed his letters “on behalf of the Charedi community”. “What a cheek,” wrote David Spitzer. “Your gripe with the Board appears to be that they have no legitimacy as spokespeople for the Jewish community in Britain. By the same token, who appointed you spokesperson for the Charedi community?” Elsewhere, a petition was started. “For too long has the Orthodox community been underrepresented or misrepresented,” it said, adding that the JCC [Jewish Community Centre and Stern were “trying to capitalise on this… they have not been elected nor appointed to represent the community”. The Board of Deputies declined to comment.

Women’s officer / Judaica sale / News
Mirvis aims to boost shul roles for women The Chief Rabbi this week announced the creation of the new role of women’s officer to improve the way women experience Orthodox services. The post will operate through constituent United Synagogues (US) and it is anticipated the woman who fills the role will be an honorary officer in her shul. Ephraim Mirvis says it is important to improve the engagement of women in community life – and particularly in synagogue services. The plan is for member synagogues of the US to tailor the role to the needs of their congregation. The women’s officer could be the point of contact for women, and offer guidance and support during the service. She may be involved in planning “womenfriendly” times of services so events can be repeated to allow women to attend and could also be the liaison to alert synagogue wardens to those women who wish to recite kaddish or “bensch Gomel”. Working with a synagogue’s rabbinic team will be of paramount importance in helping to develop work on issues which relate to, or might affect, women.
Chief Rabbi with graduates of the Ma’ayanot Project for female Jewish leaders
The Chief Rabbi’s vision of a women’s officer role includes having the post formally incorporated in the US by-laws. This was due to be done this week when the plan was laid before the US Council. As the role is likely to differ from syna-
gogue to synagogue, the Office of the Chief Rabbi and the US will hold two information sessions, one on 20 November at 8.30pm, and the second on 2 December at 10.30am, attended by representatives of both bodies to answer questions.

Hospital director Professor Yitshak Kreiss, a brigadier-general in the IDF reserves, who spent more than 30 years as a front-line combat surgeon until becoming IDF Surgeon-General, said: “We don’t just look on this as a heart transplant. “We think of it as a hope transplant between us and the Palestinians.”
Rabbi Laura JannerKlausner spoke movingly this week about her genderfluid child Tal. The senior rabbi of the Reform Movement has revealed her true identity and how, as a mother, she had to give up on the “Jewish fantasy” of her marrying a nice Jewish boy. Tal, who now lives in Jerusalem and teaches Palestinians, came out as non-binary (someone who does not identify as a man or a woman) when JannerKlausner insisted Tal wear a dress to a relative’s wedding, the rabbi told BBC’s Thought For The Day. In a subsequent article for The Telegraph, JannerKlausner said realising your child is non-binary is “liberating,” and – as with all nonbinary people – refers to Tal as “they,” rather than “he” or “she”. Janner-Klausner said Tal had experienced an

“increasing holistic calm” since coming out aged 20, and this had helped her respond to the Government’s consultation on the Gender Recognition Act. “It made sense,” says Janner-Klausner of Tal’s disclosure. “Our household, in many ways, was not gender binary at all. My dad looked after us and was very much ‘mum’ when mum was ill.” She said: “There are lots
of spaces where I’m the only woman because the religious leadership world is so male, so if you think ‘gender isn’t key here’ then it releases you.” With Tal, she adds: “Once you get used to it and give up on your Jewish fantasy it’s fine. They’re fulfilling a different Jewish fantasy – they teach Hebrew, they teach Palestinians in Israel, they’re ideological, they’re religious.”

Girls’ workshop / Emergency support / Merseyside exhibit / Netta show / News
Bright idea wins tech prize Five budding entrepreneurs proved they really did have a bright idea after their design for light-up pyjamas wowed industry experts at a special event aimed at encouraging more girls to embrace technology and engineering, writes Francine Wolfisz. More than 50 youngsters attended Girls Do Tech, a two-day workshop in Westminster that was organised by Jewish Interactive and Intu, and media sponsored by Jewish News. Winners Constanca, 12, Yasmin, 11 and Irene, also 11, who attend North London Collegiate School in Edgware, alongside Ines, 12 and Catrin, 13, from Channing School, in Highgate, impressed the judges on Sunday night with their innovative ‘Jamups’: pyjamas that can be illuminated in the dark with monotone or rainbow colours at the simple touch of a button. Their imaginative design for wearable technology has won the youngsters a tour of Google headquarters, alongside the runner-up entry, which proposed a light-up dog collar that can help owners track their pet more easily. Other unique ideas presented to the panel of eight judges included a dummy that can be used as a thermometer to help prevent babies overheating, a jacket that lights up with motion and could be worn by runners or cyclists at night, and a device that helps predict asthma and panic attacks by monitoring heart and breathing rates. Participants came from 18 schools across London and beyond. One student travelled from Paris for the day, while a mentor and her 16-yearold daughter flew in especially from Warsaw. Jewish Interactive and Intu joined forces to come up with the event after noticing last year’s

hackathon attracted only five girls out of 50 participants. Despite concerns girls might again shun the idea of a technology event, Girls Do Tech pulled in 54 attendees, with more names placed on a waiting list. “I’m absolutely elated,” said Karen Harris, managing director of IntuDigital. “I really believed we needed a girls-only event, because sometimes girls feel overpowered by the boys when it comes to tech, ideas and innovation. Today they became creators, they learnt new presentation skills and understanding more about coding – and the ideas were brilliant. Many of the girls were bubbling with enthusiasm.”
Chana Kanzen, head of Jewish Interactive, said: “When people are coming up to me and saying just how much they’ve enjoyed it and want to come back, that’s a sign it went well. “I thought the ideas were brilliant and some of them I would actually buy. The children are using their imaginations, they are innovative and are utilising skills they didn’t know they had.” Kanzen believes there is a need to encourage more girls to pursue science and technology, as they are statistically more likely to pursue careers outside of these industries. James Rosenthal, director of Global Agency at Google, Inc, one of the judging panel, said events
such as these were “critical”. He added: “We are clearly not doing a good enough job in industry and business at the moment to ensure there is equality. For the time being, we have to do these things to ensure the girls have the confidence to compete with men, because they are as good, if not better, in many cases.” As for the youngsters who took part, the verdict of the night was a veritable thumbs up. Winner Constanca said: “I would definitely come back. I really want to be an engineer when I grow up, so this has been a life-changing event for me and my future.” • Editorial comment, page 12

Liverpool kosher culture NETTA IN UK
World Jewish Relief (WJR) this week praised the initial response of the Jewish community for its Indonesia appeal after a huge earthquake and tsunami flattened the island of Sulawesi on 28 September, killing more than 2,000 people. Up to 5,000 people are still missing, with 67,000 homes destroyed and thousands still desperate for food, water and medicine, after the 7.5 magnitude quake liquefied the ground, and
The Museum of Liverpool is set to open a major new exhibit profiling the city’s Jewish heritage, with the life-size reconstruction of an iconic kosher butchers taking centre stage. The display will feature rollerskating Victorians, gruesome murders and forgotten zoological gardens, but it is the painstaking two-year reconstruction of Galkoff’s Jewish butcher’s shop, resplendent in 1930s emerald green tiles, that has captured the imagination. Piecing together the iconic façade, complete with original gold art deco
the resulting wave reaped further misery on isolated towns. WJR said Jews in the UK had shown “tremendous support”, which had allowed it to begin the process of providing emergency kits and essential non-food items, but more donations were needed to complete the humanitarian mission. The exhibit, which will open in two weeks’ time, features photographs, objects and personal memories, with the display highlighting the story of Liverpool’s Jewish community, as well as its long history of migration. Lawrence Galkoff, great-grandson of proprietor Percy Galkoff, will be there for the opening.

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations says he helped “change the rules of the game” at the world body by becoming chair of its legal committee and vice-president of the General Assembly – the first time Israelis have been represented in such a way. Ambassador Danny Danon, a former minister of science and technology and deputy minister of defence in a previous Likud-led government, was in London this week as the guest of Israel Bonds. He was keynote speaker at a lunch hosted by Lord Haskel and attended by peers, MPs, and investors from the UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Danon said: “I try to speak to everyone at the UN. I came from Israeli politics, where people will say good things about you publicly, and privately say something else. “At the UN, it’s the opposite. Publicly they will say bad things about Israel, but privately they will appreciate and admire Israel, and you can build a strong relationship. “At first, it was hard for me. I would have one of the ambassadors for breakfast in my house, and we would discuss everything, family, politics, the Middle East. An hour later I would see him in the corridors of the UN and
we would ignore each other. We even discussed that, and I challenged them to be bolder. But I understand where they are coming from. They need to educate their population”. He felt there was an “obsession” with Israel in the UN and said his great friend, the soonto-be former US Ambassador Nikki Haley, “couldn’t believe it when she arrived. Now she understands how much time she has had to spend blocking the Israel-bashing”. Danon, like other diplomats, was taken by surprise at the news of Haley’s decision to stand down at the end of the year. He said: “We are very grateful to Nikki Haley for everything she did at the UN for us. She stood for truth and common values and she will always be a friend of Israel.” Danon, as befits his former ministerial role in promoting Israel’s technological expertise, is still enthusiastic about the
work of the “start-up nation”. In April, he took 40 foreign ambassadors to Israel and is a firm believer in the value and impact of Israeli technology, saying “we have a lot to offer and the ambassadors were really interested”. He added: “We can provide more to developing countries, particularly in the field of security devices. Israeli drones and security devices, for example, protected the Pope on his visit to Africa” [in 2015]. The ambassador refused to speculate about Israel’s relationship with Britain should Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn become prime minister. He said: “We tend not to interfere or comment on local politics – but I call out antisemitism, in the UN, wherever I see it. This bothers me as a Jew. But we are a democracy and we don’t choose and decide who to speak to and who not to speak to. Our goal is to speak to even more countries than we do now.”
Hitler relative dumped by his Jewish fiancée A Jewish woman who was engaged to one of Hitler’s great-nephews broke it off after she learned of his family lineage, it has emerged. The engagement was revealed by one of three American brothers whose father was William Hitler, the Nazi dictator’s nephew, who was born in Liverpool but left for the US in 1938 and subsequently fought the Germans in the US Navy. It was an American propaganda coup, branded as ‘Hitler versus Hitler’ by US authorities, who allowed him to change his surname to Hiller in 1946, and later to Stuart-Houston. The brothers, who all live in Long

Island, are believed to be the last of Hitler’s genetic family and have kept their heritage a secret. A fourth brother died in 1989.
Alexander Stuart-Houston, 68, a retired psychotherapist and one of the surviving brothers, revealed the would-be marriage with the unnamed Jewish woman when questioned by reporters from the German newspaper Bild. Stuart-Houston did not reveal which brother had been due to marry, but made the point when asked if the three of them had a secret pact never to have children, in order to end Hitler’s genetic line, a pact he denied. He said the brothers have refused interviews to date and would continue to do so, adding: “Not for all the money in the world.”
NETANYAHU FRAUD TRIAL BEGINS The trial of Sara Netanyahu, who is charged with fraud and breach of trust, opened this week in Jerusalem. In the so-called Prepared Food Affair, the Israeli prime minister’s wife is accused of ordering some £73,000 ($96,000) worth of private meals from
high-end restaurants, rather than using the residence’s cook to prepare meals. Ezra Saidoff, a former deputy director general of the Prime Minister’s Office, was also indicted on similar charges, as well as falsification by a public servant.
Meals were ordered from gourmet restaurants between 2010 and 2013 in violation of rules preventing those living in the PM’s residence from ordering meals from the outside when there is a cook on staff, but the Netanyahus deny any wrongdoing.

A fragment of a pre-war Torah scroll from Kielce in Poland has gone on display after a two-year restoration. The 20,000-strong community was decimated during the Holocaust. In 1946, when 200 Jewish survivors returned, villagers attacked and killed 42 of them on hearing rumours that one had killed a Christian boy.
Jewish leaders in the city of Malmo have said they are working to resolve a ‘bureaucratic’ issue that led to the suspension of kosher meat sales on 20 September. Swedish authorities said the meat – now confiscated – was being sold through a company that was not registered, meaning the products were untraceable.
Far-right pro-Israel candidate Jair Bolsonaro is set to become Brazil’s next president after winning the first round of voting. He has said he will move Brazil’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, but many in the country’s Jewish community have campaigned against him, accusing him of racism and homophobia.
Jewish groups condemned the increasingly popular far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) on the day it launched a group called ‘Jews for AfD’, which the party said showed Jewish support. A total of 17 German and international Jewish groups said the party was ‘racist’ and ‘no alternative for Jews’. The oldest inscription of the word ‘Jerusalem’ has been found in the city. The writing, from the second Temple period, was among excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority in Jerusalem and unveiled at the Israel Museum on Tuesday. Photo by JINIPIX

WELBY: THIS YEAR HAS BEEN TOUGH FOR JEWS
‘Life-saving’ inventor hailed
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has said it has been “a tough year for Jews” after hosting an interfaith event at Lambeth Palace. It follows the annual presidents’ meeting organised by the Council of Christians and Jews and attended by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Liberal Rabbi Danny Rich, Senior Masorti Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg and Senior Sephardi Rabbi Joseph Dweck. Welby tweeted: “It was especially good to ... renew our commitment to mutual understanding and friendship.”
DUTCH IDENTIFY 170 STOLEN ARTWORKS
Dozens of Dutch institutions including museums say they have identified 170 artworks stolen from Jewish families by the Nazis and their collaborators. The project, involving 163 organisations, is nearing completion, and researchers have even identified one painting in the Royal collection that once belonged to a Jewish family. The artwork, which includes 83 paintings and 13 Jewish ritual objects, was stolen or confiscated under duress between 1933 and 1945.

An Israeli entrepreneur has been honoured in Paris for his invention that saves lives by prioritising casualties in most need of aid during an emergency. Maoz Ben-Ari beat 500 other entries to claim the Conference of European Rabbis’ (CER) Internet Prize, with a reward of £15,600. The honour, inspired by the Jewish value of tikkun olam, or global social healing, was presented at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris on Tuesday, at an event with keynote speaker Mounir Mahjoubi, the French minister of digital affairs. CER represents more than 700 synagogue communities throughout Europe, and the prize is now in its seventh year. Ben-Ari’s company, CardioScale, created technology that assesses a patient’s state at the scene of an incident, such as a terror attack or natural disaster, and projects their developing deteriorating condition, even if their vital signs, such as blood pressure or pulse, are at a normal range. He told Jewish News: “Lives are lost because we don’t know how to prioritise casualties in the field.”
Winner Maoz Ben-Ari’s CardioScale technology saves lives by prioritising casualties in most need of care
But, he said, with his invention, “we are able to measure someone with new technology and say who needs to be treated first”. He added: “We come from Israel, we’re Jewish, and we all know the phrase ‘to save one life is to save the whole world’.” Speaking of the importance of the prize, he said: “We have been in this business for many years. We believe in our technology and it’s great. In the last few years, we have had lots of recognition, from the Israeli Defence Forces, from the Israeli first responders, and also from Samu 94, the first-responders of Paris. It’s always good to have reassurance that someone believes in your
technology and ability to change lives and save lives.” Ben-Ari was joined by two runners up, Thierry Lamidieu, whose company Inergys provides solutions to create renewable energy, and Claudiu Leverenz, a German inventor whose SmartGlass product allows wheelchair-bound people to function more easily. Moscow’s Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, President of the Conference of European Rabbis, presented the awards. He said: “As religious leaders we have a duty to embrace technology and use it as a force of good in society. For too long, rabbis have been wary of the internet and the damage it can do, spreading hate and evil.
“We are trying to embrace the internet and turn it into a positive. We want to build a bridge between the world of tradition and the world of tomorrow. These pioneers are showing that the positives can outweigh the negatives.” Mahjoubi told the guests that he “travelled twice to Jerusalem and met entrepreneurs there”. He added: “We speak the same language even if we don’t always share the same tongue. “I met Palestinian entrepreneurs and I also met a Palestinian accelerator funded by Jews from Tel Aviv. They told me: ‘We don’t have time to speak politics because we do so much business.’

Israeli chief rabbis set out peace vision in Kazakhstan By Joe Millis in Kazakhstan @joemillis1959
Israeli leaders this week called for mutual respect and education between faiths at a conference of religious leaders in the Kazakhstan capital of Astana. Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef and his Ashkenazi counterpart, David Lau, this week joined Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Taoist and other religious leaders at the sixth Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions. Rabbi Yosef said: “We are taught that everyone should live according to their faith and with respect for others.” Addressing the plenary session, he noted that peace was “God’s greatest value. Peace meant more to God than anything else. Peace is at the foundation of the world, and peace is one of the names of the creator”. Yosef recalled his days as a dayan and head of a rabbinical court in Israel. He said he saw a lot of people going through divorce and the common denominator was that “people don’t listen to one another”.
Left: Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef. Above: Conference attendees
The Torah teaches us, he said, that “if one loses the ability to listen, it’s like death”. As we are all made in God’s image, Yosef said “we must not be angry if we hear a different view to our own. We don’t have to agree but we must listen”. He urged all world leaders, religious and political, to condemn forthrightly every terror attack, especially those “done in the name of religion”.

Lau mentioned religious terrorism when he referred to Sunday’s attack on the West Bank in which a young Israeli mother and an Israeli man were murdered at an industrial complex for Jews and Palestinians. “Three days ago, I went to the Western Wall to pray and next to me stood a man from Nigeria and he said how wonderful it is that we can pray
together,” he said. “But when I got into my car I heard the terrible news of the terrorist attack, and it occurred to me that someone had forgotten to teach the 23-year-old attacker about the importance of life and respect for the ‘other’.” Reciting from the Book Of Micha, Rabbi Lau said that “all nations will go with their Gods.” Both rabbis said it was wonderful that Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev had brought leaders of all religions and faiths together to work together, “to speak, to listen and to look each other in the eye”.

Two Israelis shot dead in West Bank terrorist attack
Two Israelis were killed and another injured in a sickening terror attack in the Barkan area in the West Bank on Sunday. Kim Levengrond Yehezkel, 29, of Rosh Ha’ayin, and Ziv Hajbi, a 35-year-old father of three from Rishon Lezion, had been tied up and shot at close range. They died at the scene. Another woman, aged in her 50s, was taken to a nearby Israeli hospital in a serious but stable condition, according to Magen David Adom. The attack occurred in the settlement’s industrial zone, which is home to 160 factories where thousands of Palestinian and Jews work together. The attacker, who used an assault rifle and reportedly knew the two victims, was caught on camera leaving the factory where he shot his victims and where he has been employed for several months. He had a work permit to

identified as a 23-year-old Palestinian from the village of Shweika near the West Bank city of Tulkarem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu called the shootings a “severe terrorist attack”. President Reuven Rivlin said it was not only an attack on innocent people but also on the possibility of Israelis and Palestinians coexisting peacefully. “I call on the Palestinian leadership to condemn this murderous attack and to use the forces at their disposal to capture the terrorist,” he added.
NASA SIGNS DEAL FOR ISRAEL SPACE MISSION
High street giant narrows faith gap
NASA has signed an agreement with the Israel Space Agency (ISA) and the Israeli non-profit SpaceIL to collaborate on the Jewish state’s unmanned moon mission expected to launch from Cape Canaveral next year. The landing will mark the culmination of eight years of collaboration on the £67million project. If it succeeds, Israel will become the fourth country to make a landing. The journey will last about two months and, at only 1,322 pounds, the spacecraft will become the smallest to complete the journey. On arrival, the module plans to take photos and video of the landing site while also measure the moon’s magnetic field as part of a Weizmann Institute scientific experiment. According to the new agreement, NASA will contribute a laser retroreflector array to aid with ground tracking and will supply other support

The film deals with La Familia, a group of far-right anti-Arab Beitar fans and their response to the team signing its first Muslim players as well as to the wave of lone-wolf attacks engulfing Israel in 2015. “We hope it becomes a warning of how racism can destroy a team or a society from within,” executive producer Lois Vossen said. MERKEL’S PLEDGE ON ANTISEMITISM German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said during a visit to Israel her country has a special obligation to combat antisemitism. Speaking at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, she called the Nazi genocide an “unprecedented” crime. “Nearly 80 years ago, on the pogrom night of 9 November, the Jewish people in Germany
faced unprecedented hate and violence,” Merkel said in reference to Kristallnacht. “But what followed were the unprecedented crimes of the Shoah and its break with civilisation. From this comes the everlasting responsibility of Germany to remember this crime and to oppose antisemitism, xenophobia, hatred and violence.”
French authorities have reportedly suspended their insistence on special labelling for West Bank products following a lawsuit alleging the practice is discriminatory. The France office of Amnesty International complained about the suspension, saying: “Instead of complying with the request to end imports [from the West Bank], the government has chosen to roll back and suspend the demand for labelling.” Israel considers the Golan and all of Jerusalem an integral part of its territory, as well as the West Bank disputed land. JEWISH ANGER AT SEX HOTEL’S NAZI SYMBOLS Jewish leaders are reported to be furious after discovering one of the most popular rooms in a sex hotel in Thailand is full of Nazi symbols and portraits of Hitler. Alongside the Hitler and swastika renderings on the walls in the “Communist” room at the Villa Love Hotel in Bangkok are images of a hammer and sickle. “This is truly awful,” said Efraim Zuroff, head of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre. “It shows a complete lack of education about Hitler, the harm he caused and the horrifying crimes he committed.”

Editorial comment and letters VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
Technically speaking There’s perhaps few things more inspiring than watching young minds at work, unleashing their imaginations and creating something wonderfully inventive. All the more pleasing was seeing the room at Jewish Interactive and Intu’s Girls Do Tech event, proudly supported by this newspaper, bursting to the seams with budding female engineers on Sunday. What a difference a year makes. A similarly-organised hackathon last November attracted just five girls out of 50 participants. Karen Harris, of Intu Digital, puts this down to girls feeling “overpowered” by the boys when it comes to tech, ideas and innovation, prompting this girls-only event as the solution. But as inspiring as the event was, it also sadly exposes the need to encourage more girls to pursue STEM subjects. James Rosenthal of Google believes girls are “as good, if not better” than their male counterparts, but they lack the same confidence. As the world hurtles along towards a tech-filled future, surely it would be best for all if men and women can take their place on the frontline. But that can only happen if young girls get the support they need today.
Responding to crisis The earthquake and tsunami which has so far claimed more than 2,000 lives in Indonesia is a striking and tragic reminder of how helpless humanity can be in the face of the might of the natural world. When the final victim of one of worst natural disasters in recent years is accounted for, the physical and structural destruction will be life changing. Whole towns and communities were destroyed in moments, families ripped apart and infrastructure flattened. But while the elements may be out of our control, the possibility of renewal and reconstruction is not. World Jewish Relief’s role in the global humanitarian response has, as it so often is at times of grief and crisis, has been as crucial and impressive as ever. As we contemplate how helpless we are in the face of such tragedy, it is motivating to remember the positive impact even the smallest contribution can have on another life. However, as there was never consultation on the site (as opposed to the design), how could objections have been raised in such a way as to be heeded? We wonder also whether we will ever see the report on different potential locations. It is, apparently, imprudent to “expend public money on a fruitless search for a non-existent better site”. Yet significant amounts of public money are being spent trying to make Adjaye Associates’ design workable and palatable in this small and precious green space. Given no planning application has yet been submitted, much less decided, it is absurd to suggest it is no longer timely to revisit the location decision. Victoria Tower Gardens is not “much neglected”. It is very well used and its excellent maintenance by The Royal Parks is reflected in its Green Flag status. The Save Victoria Tower Gardens campaign is strongly supportive of the need for a prominent Holocaust Memorial and improved Holocaust education. The peers have a point While I admire Lord Pickles and Ed balls for their staunch support of the proposed Holocaust memorial and learning centre opposite Parliament, I can’t help but side with the group of Jewish peers questioning the facility’s merits. Such memorial sites and resources are of immeasurable value on the continent, where the Nazis’ crimes were committed – long may such places educate and remind generations to come of the horrors that took place in Europe. But they are perhaps less needed in places far from the scene of the crime.
On holiday recently in the United States, I even came across a Holocaust memorial in Florida. Let’s not forget Britain took the lead, and stood alone against Hitler and his regime during the early years of the war. The eight peers rightly point out that the memorial would be undermined “if it is seen, quite wrongly, as conveying an impression of national guilt”. This would be an appalling unintended consequence. We have nothing to apologise for.

This organisation then uses it to reward Palestinians who murder Jews, as in the latest murder of a 29-year-old mother and wife handcuffed to a chair at her work in a joint Israeli/Palestinian industrial zone and shot in the head by a Palestinian co-worker. Richard Millett NW4
Further to the incident involving Young Tories at an event during the party conference, I agree many of the comments on the t-shirts they wore were offensive and, at worst antisemitic, but there’s a reason the comments were there. Freshers weeks involve many social events. This was one such, where attendees wear blank t-shirts and bring markers for people outside the group to write on them. It was almost certainly not the students who wrote the comments themselves. These socials are com-
monplace and many far worse comments are written on many shirts. You and many other media sources attack the students with no comment from them. Their society is suspended and the individuals are under investigation by the Conservative Party. Why? Most likely because other drunken students, probably antiConservatives, wrote on their shirts and then took the pictures. You are contributing to a political attack and I would like you to acknowledge this. George Rushton By email

No hushed voices when talking of mental health LUCIANA BERGER MP
LABOUR MP FOR LIVERPOOL WAVERTREE
W
e’ve come a long way in breaking down taboos and tackling stereotypes about mental illness. Young people in particular are far more likely to be able to speak openly about mental health and can describe different forms of mental illness. We have brave pioneers to thank for this cultural shift over the past 20 years, including outspoken celebrities such as Ruby Wax and Stephen Fry. But for the Jewish community, like many close-knit and family-centred communities, the legacy of shame and stigma may remain when it comes to mental health. There can be a tendency to keep mental health problems ‘in the family’ or ‘in the community’, thus failing to get the proper professional diagnosis and treatment. A young Jewish mum may be reluctant to speak out about her post-natal depression because she feels she has failed to reach some imposed standard of motherhood. Too often at
Jewish events people tell me in a hushed voice about their family member who is in an inpatient unit, or the treatment they are receiving. They say they can tell me about it because of my public work on mental health, but they can’t share it with family and friends. For a community that has given the world so many leading mental health professionals, starting with the grandfather of psycho-analysis Sigmund Freud, we are too often reluctant to be open. This must change. This week we marked World Mental Health Day, which this year focuses on young people’s mental health. I used the day to spark discussions in the community about how to improve young people’s mental health. I hope Jewish News readers raised, and will raise, the issue in their communal organisations. I know it isn’t easy. As well as the stigma, there is a real shortage of mental health services. Years of underfunding have created a crisis, especially in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). The Education Policy Institute reports this week that the number of referrals to specialist children’s mental health services
❝
FOR THE JEWISH COMMUNITY, THE LEGACY OF SHAME AND STIGMA REMAINS ON THIS ISSUE has increased by 26 percent over five years. Yet one in four referrals is turned away, meaning that more than 55,000 young people are not getting the help they need. The report says that the average wait for an assessment is 34 days, and 60 days to receive treatment. In most cases of mental illness, this means that young people’s conditions become worse. The government has promised a future target of four weeks’ wait, but this goal is currently frequently being missed. The risk of cultural insensitivity may deter some families from seeking help from the NHS. Some mental health workers lack basic
awareness of issues such as when Shabbat starts, and other religious issues. At the very least, mental health professionals in areas with a significant Jewish population should receive some training in cultural differences to avoid unnecessary problems. Some great work is going on. At some Jewish secondary schools, the students have access to therapists and counsellors, helping them to cope with stress and anxiety especially around exam time. The Jewish Association for Mental Illness (Jami) provides a totally dedicated mental health service for the community. It runs a popular café in Golders Green and encourages its customers to talk about mental health. This important voluntary association celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, and it is needed now more than ever. World Mental Health Day gives us all the platform to talk about mental health, and to demand the quality services we need. For the Jewish community in particular, it affords us the chance to tackle taboos, stigma and outdated attitudes. For the sake of our young people, let’s talk about mental health.
Put our community’s emotional health first ELEANOR SEGALL MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGNER
T
he theme of Tuesday’s World Mental Health Day was ‘Young people and mental health in a changing world’. It is vital we look after everyone’s mental health, but young people in today’s world face a unique set of challenges. The World Federation for Mental Health, which founded the day, said it chose this focus in 2018 because “young people are spending most of their day on the internet – experiencing cyber crimes, cyber bullying, and playing violent video games”. It added: “Suicide and substance abuse numbers have been steadily rising, LGBTQ youth are feeling alone and persecuted for being true to themselves, and young adults are at the age when serious mental illnesses can occur and yet they are taught little to nothing about mental illness and well-being. “We want to begin the conversation ... so young people grow up healthy, happy and resilient.” According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), suicide is a leading cause of death
among 15-to-29-year-olds, and one in five young people struggle with mental illness. The numbers are growing and, indeed, our own community has been saddened by the suicides of several young people this year. We must talk to all our young people and educate them about emotional health. We must tell them in our schools it is all right to talk about their mental health and confide in a trusted adult, whether a parent, guardian, counsellor or teacher. We must make them aware of free nonjudgmental services such as the Samaritans or, if they feel more comfortable, the Jewish helpline. We must put mental health education and wellbeing for the young on the agenda throughout the Jewish community, as has begun to happen with charities such as Jami, Noa Girls and Migdal Emunah. We must train teachers in Jewish schools in mental health first aid and make sure struggling students have access to help. Social media can exacerbate mental health issues such as selfesteem and body image as well as bullying, but it can also be a positive force. I relate to the theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day because when I was 16 I
❝
I RELATE TO THE THEME OF WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY BECAUSE, WHEN I WAS 16, I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER. THE SUPPORT I RECEIVED HELPED ME THROUGH was trying to navigate my GCSEs with severe depression. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and hospitalised at the Priory in north London during the first year of my A- levels. At times, I had suicidal thoughts owing to the disorder, but the support of my family and school helped me through it. My school, Immanuel College, was fantastic. I saw a counsellor who recommended a psychiatrist and I had the help I needed. We had little mental health education at school, but the teachers were remarkable. Their care helped me to feel comfortable and come back to school when I was recovering – and helped get me to university. My experience then will not be the
same for everyone. That’s why it is vital adults check in with young people and, if they notice any signs of illness, make sure safeguarding is put in place for them. Suicides and self-harm are on the rise. I hope schools will start adopting suicide prevention programmes, prioritising well-being and mental health education and encouraging children to talk if they feel they can. Some have, but there is more to be done. We can’t prevent every suicide or episode of illness, but by supporting the emotional health of young people in our community by being non-judgmental and seeing them for who they are, we can make a change.

Pricey petrol could be the cost of taming Iran ALEX BRUMMER
CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL
O
ne of Theresa May’s few policy announcements at the Tory party conference was a pledge to keep the freeze on petrol duty. There had been speculation that, after eight years on hold, the Treasury was anxious to raise extra duties to help find £20billion for the NHS. In effect President Trump made that impossible. An unholy alliance between Saudi Arabia and Russia to limit production of crude oil has meant a surging crude oil price, which determines the cost of petrol at the pumps. The reason for the rise, which lifted crude oil above $80 a barrel, was Trump’s decision to side with Benjamin Netanyahu and tear up the Iranian nuclear agreement. But Trump doesn’t do things by halves. He also decided to reimpose sanctions on Tehran in spite of a vote in the United Nations saying such action was illegal. The consequence is the oil price has begun to climb again, with many
countries fearful of attracting the Trump ire by doing business with Iran. The price of petrol and diesel at the pumps has jumped by 10 pence or so since May and many experts believe the wholesale price for oil could rise from the current $80 to $100 a barrel. Those who opposed the Iran deal by President Obama to lift sanctions in response to inspection of its nuclear facilities and a halt in further production of the isotopes critical to nuclear weapon production have welcomed Trump’s actions. But as veteran journalist Bob Woodward revealed in his new book Fear: Trump in the White House, the administration has more than enough reasons to want to tame Iran. Indeed, for supporters of Israel, paying more for petrol may be a small price. According to Woodward, former army colonel Derek Harvey is a “fact driven” intelligence officer who serves as Middle East director on Trump’s National Security Council. Early in the Trump presidency, he warned Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner (assigned a Middle East peace portfolio) and others in the administration that Hezbollah, with more

than 48,000 full-time military operatives in the Lebanon, was an existential threat to Israel. Hezbollah, financed by Iran, had extended its reach and now comprised 8,000 regional commando forces in Syria, Lebanon and across the region. It also had units operating globally from Colombia in South America to Mozambique and Kenya. Iran was paying Hezbollah bills at a staggering cost of $1bn year. Most disturbing of all, Hezbollah has under its command some 150,000 rockets. In the 2006 Lebanon war, it had access to just 4,500. In addition to direct subvention from Iran, Hezbollah was making money from money laundering, human trafficking and the opium
trade. With the backing of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Hezbollah was Israel’s most serious enemy and had enough rockets to pummel the Jewish state’s air bases and overwhelm the Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow defences. The forensic detail of the Harvey briefing goes a long way to explaining much of America’s policy toward the Middle East. This includes reaching out to Saudi Arabia and Israel, as an alliance against jihadi extremism, across the region, and the aerial campaign supported by the UK against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Most importantly, it convinced Trump and his advisers the moderate leadership of President Hassan Rouhani in Iran was a chimera and with the export of terror nothing had changed. The restoration and toughening of sanctions on Iran already is causing serious difficulties by sending the currency, the rial, plunging on foreign exchanges, blocking off hard currency flows and causing internal hardship. Next time members of the British Jewish community fill their cars and complain about the price of fuel, they can at least reflect there are good, strategic reasons behind the cost.

If everyone’s a critic, we must be doing well MARIE VAN DER ZYL PRESIDENT BOARD OF DEPUTIES
A
handful of protesters from the ‘Kaddish for Gaza’ franchise recently turned up outside the Board of Deputies’ offices for an impromptu demonstration. The protest involved turning a succah they had brought along in to a vehicle for protest against the Israeli Government and, later, defacing our own succah with posters and slogans. Despite apparently wanting to influence our views, they had not been in touch with us previously, nor with the police to notify them of their intention to demonstrate, as is required. We were unimpressed with their subversion of Jewish sacred rites for political ends. The police were unimpressed with their unannounced protest on private property and, once they’d made their point, gently ushered them away. Hours later, two deputies launched an absurd attempt at a vote of no confidence against our senior vice president Sheila Gewolb, a popular
and devoted communal volunteer. They alleged she had breached the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism by making a statement on Israel’s Nation State Law. This was a gift to far-left antiJewish elements, who mischievously took it as ‘evidence’ that IHRA could be misused. So far, the only signatures we have received have been those of the original two deputies. Meanwhile, another petition has been launched by an individual with the aim of banning the use of the Palestinian flag in any Board of Deputies communication or on our website. This has been prompted by our Invest in Peace campaign, which was overwhelmingly backed in a vote by deputies. The images of the Israeli and Palestinian flags are used in our literature to promote this venture with Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, which has run successful events around the country to improve the quality of ChristianJewish dialogue on the Middle East conflict. The whole premise of the petition is questionable, given Israeli leaders including Benjamin Netanyahu have frequently appeared

WE STRIVE TO EMBODY THE VIBRANT DEMOCRATIC DEBATE AT HEART OF BRITISH JEWRY
pictured in front of the Palestinian flag when involved in talks with the Palestinian Authority. Finally, a lone Charedi voice has called for a demonstration outside our annual dinner with Sadiq Khan on 5 November. They are giving very mixed and confused messages as to why, telling the left-wing online publication Skwawkbox that it is because we are ‘too hard on Jeremy Corbyn’, but spreading false rumours in Stamford Hill that we have been lobbying against Charedi schools, despite our longstanding advocacy alongside Charedi groups on this issue. This has prompted a backlash against this person from many in the Charedi community who are affronted that he claims to speak in their name.
These opposing groups are small in number, their perspectives are marginal and they in no way represent the sensible opinions of the vast majority of our community. As democratically-elected representatives of the community, we are accountable. We expect to hear from those who think we are too proIsrael and those who think we are too critical; those who think we’ve been too tough on Corbyn and those who think we’ve been too soft; those who think we’re too liberal and those who think we are too conservative. While negotiating that spectrum of views can sometimes be challenging, we strive daily to embody the vibrant, democratic debate at the heart of British Jewry. At the very centre of our mission is the obligation to serve our community in all its diversity, and this we are honoured to do. I’d go further. The vitriol on both sides gives us the strong conviction that our positioning on the major issues is correct. I take heart from the fact people only demonstrate against bodies that are relevant. And I am proud that, in its 258-year history, the Board of Deputies has seldom been more relevant than it is today.

More than 300 guests filled the Wyllyotts Theatre in Potters Bar on Sunday evening for the community’s leading variety show, with performances from gymnasts, an Israeli dance troupe, a magician, singers and a comedian. It was, however the young singers who stole the show with Shelly Chitiyat, a final year student at Mathilda Marks-Kennedy School. Shelly received a standing ovation for her performance of the song Papa, Can You Hear Me from the film Yentl in memory of her grandfather who passed away last year. The judges were blown away with the emotion and maturity in her voice and stage presence during her performance. Shelly said: “I really enjoyed the performance and knowing that it went to a good cause made me even happier. Thank you for giving me the opportunity. I believe that my grandpa, who was watching me from heaven, was very proud of me. I was very excited and nervous as there was very good competitors.” Fellow singer Yoni Shine, 11, was presented with the runners up trophy at the event, organised by the Hebrew Order of David in aid of Jewish Care. The JFS pupil belted out a perfect performance of Rise Up with his 19-year-old brother accompanying him on the piano. As the audience broke out in applause, his elder brother gave him a congratulatory hug and kiss in a moment that warmed the hearts of every audience member. The night’s judges were TV presenter Melanie Sykes, comedian Steve Furst (appearing as Lenny Beige), Britain’s Got Talent finalist and impressionist Francine Lewis and Jewish News editor Richard Ferrer. Stuart Stepsky, event host and member of the Hebrew Order of David said: “It was a fantastically successful evening, raising more than £8,000. “A big thank you to the event sponsors, Filip Slipaczek, and my friends at Hebrew Order of David for making the event possible Thank you to everyone who auditioned and those who performed at the event. Who knew Blue Peter was so... Jew Peter! As the iconic children’s show celebrates its 60th birthday and 5,000+ episodes, we take a look at its finest Jewish moments
1. BLUE SUEDE JEWS
Martyn Lopes-Dias, A.K.A. Elvis Shmelvis tells Jewish News: “In 2005, I led 76 other Elvis tributes all singing Viva Las Vegas at Selfridges, London and we set the Guinness World Record for the most number of Elvis impersonators all singing together in one place. The next day we performed it again live on Blue Peter. Afterwards, I was given a Blue Peter badge and I knew that going home to my two boys with only one badge would cause a problem. I needed another, so I went into the presenters’ dressing room and spoke to Liz Barker and Zoe Salmon. Straight away they took off their own badges and gave them to me. Problem solved!”
2. HAPPY FEET
Jewish News reader Carol Rosenberg-Fox tells us: “Back in 1979, I was pregnant with my daughter. The first time the new theme music was played, my daughter kicked for the first time. I wrote to Ms Baxter and received a cloth Blue Peter badge to sew onto something.”
heritage, by meeting a Torah scribe, sitting in on the Shabbat preparations of Rabbi David Lister, attending a batmitzvah and finally visiting Auschwitz, where he met Holocaust survivor Freda Wineman, who was returning to the Nazi death camp for the first time. He also explored the traditions of Chanukah and visited the family of Francesca Weiner, the then eight-year-old granddaughter of Rabbi Tony Bayfield, then-head of the Movement for Reform Judaism.
4. ON SONG
The late Caron Keating introduced London School of Jewish Song onto the show in 1989, just after the group returned from a series of concerts in Russia in the early days of Glasnost. The group performed Anim Zemiros and Shir Shir, before being interviewed by the presenter. One child said: “We sang synagogue songs and they all joined in, they couldn’t help themselves, they were dancing, singing, they were kissing all of us.” Caron then poignantly asked: “Do you think since Glasnost it’s become easier for Jewish people in Russia?” The youngsters all nodded. “They wear their yarmulkes now, but they are still not allowed to teach religion to the children. It’s getting better, slowly but surely.”
6. EDITOR’S CHAIR
Throughout the programme’s 60-year history, there have been just seven editors and among them is Lewis Bronze. He began his BBC career with John Craven’s Newsround in 1981 and moved on to Blue Peter, first as assistant editor in 1983, and then as editor for eight years in 1988. During his time with the show, he won a BAFTA in 1992 for Best Children’s Programme and oversaw more than 850 Blue Peter episodes.

he had “always secretly privately wanted” the badge, he added: “I’m going to wear it with pride. I’ve been aware of Blue Peter ever since I started making movies here in 1980. I made Raiders of the Lost Ark here in the UK in 1980. This is my first Blue Peter badge … so thank you.”
5. DUNG DYNAMITE

In 2016, Steven Spielberg finally achieved the dream of a lifetime: a gold Blue Peter badge. The Jewish film director joined a select group, including the Queen, JK Rowling and Sir David Attenborough by being awarded the show’s highest accolade. Saying

They wondered if they could make an entire show based on funny outtakes. The iconic Blue Peter blooper inspired It’ll Be Alright on the Night, which ran for an incredible 30 years.
8. HERE’S ONE I MADE EARLIER!
Youngsters have been tuning in for six decades to follow the Blue Peter makes, which normally involved copious amounts of silver foil, toilet rolls and sticky back plastic. The most popular make was Tracy Island, which received
In May 1976, presenter Lesley Judd interviewed Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank, after he agreed to bring his daughter’s diaries to Britain. It was the first time the diary had been shown to anyone outside of the Frank family. Co-presenter Peter Purves tells Otto after the interview: “The diary really is one of the most precious objects we have ever had.”
10. NAME THAT TUNE
The Blue Peter signature tune, Barnacle Bill, has evolved many times over the years, but the very first version was arranged by Jewish composer Sidney Torch and the New Century Orchestra. It was used from October 1958 to January 1979.

Deborah Cicurel takes a jungle hike in Ecuador and explores the historic surroundings of its capital, Quito
M
y idea of fun doesn’t usually involve creeping around in the dark, poking in bushes to find tarantulas and leaning in close to inspect their legs. Yet here I am, walking beside my husband in the dead of night in Ecuador, both of us clad in Wellington boots. We whoop with joy when we see a tiny, fluffy baby tarantula and practically shriek with excitement at spotting a small stick insect before noticing, a tiny rare frog sitting on a leaf and fluorescent in the darkness. Three-and-a-half hours from Quito, in the middle of Ecuador’s Chocó-Andean rainforest, is one of the most surreal places I have visited – Mashpi Lodge, a futuristic glass-fronted hotel with 24 luxurious rooms. It would be impressive no matter where it was. But its remote location has cemented its status as one of the world’s most desirable eco spots: a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World and one of six hotels featured in the BBC’s Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby series. To wake up and look through the enormous windows straight on to the cloud forest or to dine on locally-sourced delicacies inside the doublestorey glass-fronted dining room is memorable, but Mashpi is not just a place for visitors passively to enjoy the views. It is also a centre for scientific research, with guests invited to become adventurers and live like biologists during their stay. Mashpi’s entire purpose is to preserve the endangered forest, and it does so not just by

bringing in tourists and educating them but by hiring most of its staff from the area and funding research into the many local species, some of them discovered only in the past few years. The lodge is on the site of what was a logging station and many of the staff, now staunch conservationists, were once loggers. One can only imagine, looking round one of the only biodiversity hotspots in the world, how different things could have been. The hotel organises a variety of hikes for travellers of all fitness levels but they are not just walks in pretty surroundings: every few minutes, we stop to taste edible plants, dive into refreshing waterfalls, even sway on a swing made by the guide from vines wrapped round a tree root. A night safari is totally different: you might be walking a path you walked during the day, but night is the time to spot very different creatures, pointed out by guides with seemingly supernatural powers of vision. There’s also the chance to see the rainforest and the cloud forest from different perspectives: riding an aerial bicycle suspended on two points in the forest, and the Dragonfly, an open-air cable car that carries you through the forest canopy so you can spot sloths and birds hiding in the trees. Mashpi Lodge is a major birdwatching destination, too: rest assured that even if the extent of your experience in this area has been dodging pigeons in Trafalgar Square, you’re guaranteed to go home a bona fide avian enthusiast. How can you not, after watching tiny hum-

mingbirds fly up to your nose, toucans of all colours snacking on bananas and crested owls hooting from the trees all in the same day? The guides are patient and thorough, explaining each species and never making you feel ignorant for not being able to name them yourself. There are nightly talks on everything from understanding amphibians to using binoculars to take wildlife photos; my guide, Estuardo, knew all there is to know about birds, mushrooms, trees and any other topics we threw at him. It is a testament to the enthusiasm, passion and knowledge of the guides that I, who would normally scream if I saw a tiny spider, was now overjoyed to learn more about tarantulas. After two days at Mashpi, we left the magic of the forest and headed for a more urban adventure in Quito, Ecuador’s capital. We stayed at Casa Gangotena, a 31-bedroom boutique hotel in a restored historic mansion in the centre of the old town, overlooking Plaza San Francisco. The hotel is magnificent: spacious rooms with original details such as intricate hand-painted ceilings and a

terrace with wonderful views over the old town as well as the surrounding mountains and volcanos. The highlight is the light-filled patio, ideal for afternoon tea in one of the cosy sitting areas. Casa Gangotena is ideally placed to explore the old town, filled with historic churches, bustling cafés and varied museums, the presidential palace, Palacio de Carondelet, and the enormous Gothic church, Basilica del Voto Nacional. There is Jewish life, too. The community is small, a few hundred families in the whole country, but active: there is a beautiful synagogue, Communidad de Judia de Ecuador, and a Chabad centre that enthusiastically welcomed my husband for Friday-night service and offers tourists kosher meals and accommodation for shabbat. If you love beautiful cities, stunning natural scenery and learning about conservation in a magical setting, make time for Quito and Mashpi Lodge. You may not lose your fear at the sight of a spider in the bath, but you will come back with a sense of wonder at such an incredible place .
TRAVEL TIPS Deborah stayed at Mashpi Lodge (mashpilodge.com), where rates are from £1,017 per room, per night on an all-inclusive basis, including meals, activities and transfers to and from major Quito hotels. She also stayed at Casa Gangotena (www.casagangotena. com), where rates are from £303 per room, per night on a B&B basis.

SEDRA Noach
BY RABBI SAM TAYLOR The Netziv, Rabbi Naphtali Zvi Yehudah Berlin of Volozhin, offers a novel approach to the incident of the tower of Babel, which is featured towards the end of this week’s Torah portion. He writes that the tower was to serve as a watchtower, from which guards would ensure the city’s population would remain within its walls. Herein lies the sin of the generation: the quest for a monolithic, homogenous population, where no foreign ideas or lifestyles may be legitimised or tolerated. The builders are described as being “one people with one language for all” (11:6). They sought to design a community that would not allow the intrusion of any foreign cultural elements. The Netziv views such a quest as a direct violation of one of God’s first commands to Noah after the deluge: “and you, be fruitful and multiply, teem on the earth and increase on it” (9:7). Man was specifically enjoined to fill the earth, to spread to all geographic regions and establish different communities that can live harmoniously with one another. The Netziv adds that during the period prior to the destruction of the first Temple, the Israelites formed conflicting, insular factions, each of which viewed itself as safeguarding the nation’s peace and stability, while warring against the other groups. God feared the same result after observing the construction of the city and tower of Babel. If people form confining societies with no tolerance for others, wars and bloodshed are inevitable. He forced diversity upon mankind by dividing them according to dialect. The tower of Babel generation would have to acknowledge and appreciate the existence of differing cultures.

What’s in a number?
This week, number...
Figuring out Jewish history
13
BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND Triskaidekaphobia sounds exotic, but is a remarkably common phobia of the number 13. Skyscrapers are built without a 13th floor; houses can jump from number 11 to 15. People even avoid travelling on Friday 13th. In Judaism, however, the number 13 is rich with positive associations. Maimonides famously elucidated his 13 Principles of Faith, such as the uniqueness and omnipotence of God, the immutability of the Torah, reward and punishment, and the guarantee of eventual redemption via a personal messiah. One of the more curious songs at the end of the seder, Who Knows One? also mentions the 13 Attributes.
Perhaps the most dramatic moment in the Torah revolves around the events of the Golden Calf. Furious at the idolworship days after the giving of the Torah, God threatens the destruction of those who took part.
❝
IN JUDAISM, THE NUMBER 13 IS RICH WITH POSITIVE ASSOCIATIONS
Moses, through heroic self-sacrifice and prayer, persuades God to not only renege on His threat, but to teach him the 13 Attributes of Mercy, through which the Jewish people can gain mercy at even the most perilous of times. We relive this encounter when we recite this Hashem Hashem prayer, most famously in the Yom Kippur prayers. There are, of course, other sets of 13: the totality of the 12 Tribes plus the Levites; the 13 Principles of Torah exegesis, recited at the beginning of the morning service; the age of barmitzvah. Perhaps why it is an auspicious number relates to the Gematria (numerical value) of the word echad – meaning ‘one’ – which is 13. The number 13 relates back to One – God – and gives us a variety of ways to relate to Him in a complex world in which His Presence is not so easily perceived. The Bible Says What?
Is President Donald Trump really the answer to peace in the Middle East?
Joshua asked God to stop the moon and sun and God agreed BY RABBI DR RENE PFERTZEL These events, which are recorded in the 10th chapter of the book of Joshua, actually occurred on 30 October 1207 BCE, if we are to believe a study published last year by Cambridge University. Verse 12 of Joshua 10 reads vayydom ha-shemesh, v’yareach ‘amad and is usually translated as the sun stood still and the moon halted. The next verse implies the sun stopped its course for a whole day. This then allowed Joshua and the people to defeat a mighty army of enemies, after which he is said to have concluded “neither before, nor since, has there ever been such a day, when the Eternal acted on words spoken by a man”. The Cambridge study has a different take. Its authors understand verse 12 as meaning the sun and the moon simply stopped shining. Combining Joshua with an ancient Egyptian text, they concluded the Hebrew Bible records a
solar eclipse, making it the oldest eclipse ever reported. The scholars at Cambridge do not try to prove the veracity of the biblical narrative. But inta-biblical material might help us to understand why God changed the course of nature. In Exodus 14, God splits the waters of the Sea of Reeds to help the people escape the Egyptian army. Again, facing a mighty enemy, God bends the law of nature. In both cases, Israel’s defeat would have meant the end of God’s people, and in both cases the biblical author wanted to stress that human history was part of a larger design, even though it meant bending the natural course of things. Biblical “truth” is not scientific truth, and trying to prove biblical stories leads to disappointment. Its truth is spiritual, emotional and inspiring. Rabbi René Pfertzel serves
Kingston Liberal Synagogue
BY STUDENT RABBI DEBORAH BLAUSTEN With talks still suspended after four years, any attempt at resurrecting the moribund Middle East peace process would seem reasonable to consider. The pursuit of peace is valued highly in Judaism. The psalmist urges us to “seek peace and pursue it”, the words “justice, justice shall you pursue” animate our sense of religious purpose. Our daily Amidah prayers end with a prayer for peace. So surely any attempt to move towards this goal should be welcomed? Although noble in its professed aims, the desire of the Trump administration to have a deal on the table within two to four months should be met with trepidation, not because of the goal, but because of the conduct of those pursuing it. The nature of the peacemaker matters in Jewish tradition, and the Talmud says: “There is no one
more humble of spirit than he who pursues peace.” According to Rabbi Daniel Roth, Aaron the priest is depicted as a model peacemaker. He is given the honour because he was willing to humble himself to make peace and never rebuked one of the sides or dismissed their argument. The archetype of Aaron the priest, humble peacemaker who respects both sides, feels far from that of Donald J Trump. One of the key attributes of peacemakers in Jewish tradition is that the peacemakers themselves are secondary to the people who matter most – those who are involved in the conflict. We should ask whether the peacemaking plan is motivated by helping those involved, or merely to achieve the prowess of having solved a difficult problem. Steps already taken by Trump,
including withdrawing US funding to the UN’s Palestinian Refugee Agency, have caused concern among the Palestinian leadership that the US might not be equally committed to both sides. From a religious perspective, our values demand that we must expect others to enjoy the same rights as we do. Achieving a solution where the rights of one side are given automatic primacy over another is clearly not equitable. If we would reject this treatment, we must also consider whether it is acceptable when the bias appears in Israel’s favour. True peace requires enfranchisement and the people it impacts at its core if it is to last longer than the peacemaker’s flight back home. Deborah Blausten is a rabbinic student at Leo Baeck College

ERIC SALAMON SPECIALIST CAREER ADVISOR
RESOURCE, THE JEWISH EMPLOYMENT ADVICE CENTRE Dear Eric, Do you have any helpful tips on questions not to ask during a job interview? Joanna Dear Joanna Everything you say at the interview should be focused on convincing the interviewer you can do the job, you want the job and will fit in. Stick to questions and answers that do just that. Don’t say you have an in-depth knowledge of quantum mechanics just to impress, unless it is in the job spec and you really do!

Never answer “I don’t know” or “I have no experience of that.” Think about the skills required to perform the task and not the specific task. The chances are you have the required skills but have used them in a different context or situation. You might not have actually used Excel, but other software or techniques to collate, manipulate and analyse data, so give examples of these to show your skills. If asked if you have any weaknesses, do not say you have none. It is just not believable and could be seen as arrogant. Refer to a relatively unimportant issue and describe how you have developed an approach which overcomes it. Avoid any discussion of salary if you can .The best time to negotiate the package is once you have been offered the job. Finally, never say “that’s a good question” to give yourself thinking time to respond. Of course it is a good question – your prospective boss just asked it.
HAZEL KAYE In short, depending on your objectives and timeframe, there are lots of pieces of the puzzle that you can use. This is where seeking financial advice can help provide you the valuable base knowledge to make use of those pieces that best fit your investment objectives. Congratulations on taking the first step to solving your dilemma. See www.neilpoole. com for more or call me on 07710757503.
