The last survivors of the Kindertransport — the 10,000 children who came to Britain in 1938 from Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia — are to receive one-off compensation payments, as a result of prolonged negotiations between the Claims Conference and the German government, writes Jenni Frazer. Greg Schneider, executive vicepresident of the Claims Conference, announced this week that each would receive £2,245.98 out of a total fund of £2.2million. He added: “There’s no cap on the fund, so if there turn out to be more than 1,000 people eligible everyone will still receive £2,245.” An estimated 1,000 Kinder are thought to be alive, aged between 80 and 100. Half are believed to live in the United Kingdom, with the rest spread throughout the United States, Israel, Canada and Australia. The Claims Conference has spent years negotiating with the German government for payments to be made to surviving Kinder, some of whom, it is acknowledged, did receive some payment in the 1950s. Additionally, the Kinder were included in a variety of other payments such as pensions and help with their home care and welfare. Continued on page 3

News / Kinder compensation
‘Welcome news, but it’s too late for many of the Kinder’ homes, their loving parents, to live in a country where the language and culture were different and alien.” Asked what he planned to do with the money, Erich said he would like to buy an antique from before the war, to serve as a memory to his parents. But he added: “The money is welcome, but it is too late for some of the Kinder”.

In 1939, three brothers – Jacques, aged 11, Oswald, 10, and little Erich, just four – were waved off a Vienna station platform by their parents, Schapse and Mina Reich. The boys did not know it, but they were never to see their parents again. Erich – now “Sir Erich” – made a new life in Britain, having been sent to live with foster carers in Dorking, but says he has no memories at all of his parents or of life at home in Vienna. What he does know is that for the 10,000 children and young people who came to Britain on the Kindertransport, life would never be the same again. This week’s news that the German Government had agreed a payment to the surviving Kinder “came like a bolt out of the blue” to Sir Erich, who chairs the Kindertransport committee at the Association of Jewish Refugees. “It’s not a life-changing sum of money,” he told Jewish News, “but it is very important because it is a recognition of what the Kinder went through. They left their warm
HOW TO CLAIM The Kindertransport Fund will open on 1 January 2019 and begin processing eligible applications. Having claimed under previous compensation programmes will not bar claimants from receiving this new benefit, despite the fact some potential recipients have already received small sums under other programmes. Eligibility criteria were determined by the German Government, and, in the case of the Kind, this means those who “escaped from the place of your residence due to an impending Nazi threat”. ANGER AT BOARD TWEET
Need to talk? We’re here to listen.
The Board of Deputies has rejected claims it ignored the “political consequences” of supporting Australia’s decision to recognise West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In a tweet on Sunday, the Board claimed Australia had recognised Jerusalem – without qualifying the West or East of the city – saying: “Great to see recognition of the simple truth of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital gaining pace. Thank you Australia!” Board sources told Jewish News the initial tweet was not approved by the honorary

officers, some of whom were “angry” at its contents and timing. The tweet followed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s statement that Canberra “looks forward to moving our embassy to West Jerusalem when practical, in support of, and after the final status determination.” Yachad director Hannah Weisfeld said she was “surprised” it showed “such little thought about the political consequences… Suggesting this is about a ‘simple truth’ is the most simplistic statement you could possibly make
about Jerusalem”. Human rights lawyer Adam Wagner noted the Board’s social media output was “all over the place on Israel-Palestine and has been for a while… They should be much more cautious and measured.” A Board spokesperson said: “Our position, which is consistent with that taken by our counterparts in the Australian Jewish community, international Jewish leaders and the Israeli Foreign Ministry, is to welcome the Australian Government’s direction of travel.”

A Pulitzer Prize-winning author has been condemned for saying a book by notorious antisemite David Icke is among those on her nightstand. Alice Walker (pictured), who wrote The Color Purple, told The New York Times Book Review in “Icke’s books there is the whole of existence, on this planet and several others, to think about. A curious person’s dream come true”. Icke is a former Coventry City goalkeeperturned-BBC sports broadcaster who promotes the forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,
and supports conspiracy theories about “Rothschild Zionists” controlling the world. Walker singled out And the Truth Shall Set You Free, which Icke had to issue himself after his publisher declined. It describes the Talmud as “among the most appallingly racist documents on the planet”. The Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt said: “We’re deeply disappointed The New York Times Book Review would print author Alice Walker’s unqualified endorsement of a book by notorious British antisemitic conspiracy theorist David Icke.”

Germany agrees to compensation Continued from page 1 They remain eligible for these new payments. But Schneider said the Kinder, currently marking the 80th anniversary of their historic journey to Britain, had never received anything to compensate for “lost childhood and the psychological trauma they endured, and we hope people will take it as a validation of that suffering”. He said that throughout the negotiations he had been thinking about the parents of the children. “Imagine having to put your child on a train, and in some cases pick one sibling rather than another, put on a brave face and wave goodbye, knowing that you would almost certainly never see your son or daughter again. It is simply heartbreaking.” Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, the Claims Conference special negotiator, said: “This

BRITISH EMUNAH GETS NEW HEAD
British Emunah has appointed a new executive director. Lynda Dullop, currently director of admissions and operations at Immanuel College, takes up her role in March and will run the charity’s Hendon headquarters and be responsible for raising funds to support 37 projects across Israel for at-risk or disadvantaged children and families. She said: “Raising funds for vulnerable, less privileged children and in Israel is very appealing and so important.” British Emunah chair Rosalyn Liss described Dullop as “a highly-respected professional”.
Labour decision aids EU in Hamas dispute Decisions made by former Labour cabinet ministers Jack Straw and Gordon Brown in 2001 have helped the European Union win a legal battle against Hamas. Gaza’s terrorist rulers, whose political leadership is partly based in Doha, are seeking to unfreeze funds held on the continent. Their lawyers challenged the technical legality of the
way in which the EU adopted its asset freeze. They said the EU had not adopted a Common Position but instead relied on US legal decisions designating Hamas a terror organisation, which would have rendered the EU’s asset freeze illegal. However, the Luxembourg court found the UK had done so and that this was sufficient. Judges cited Straw’s decision to blacklist the organisation
in March 2001, and Brown’s decision to freeze Hamas accounts. Judges said Straw, who used the UK Terrorism Act 2000 to proscribe Hamas-Izz al-Din al-Qassem on 29 March 2001, was UK home secretary at the time, so “has the status of competent authority within the meaning of the Common Position”. The court was also able to rely on a decision made by

argued the EU’s freezing of the group’s assets was “a violation of its right to property” and that it was “disproportionate and intolerable”.
LABOUR OFFICIAL ‘BLAMED ALL WARS ON JEWS’ The Labour Party’s West Midlands organiser has been suspended for blaming “all the wars in the world” on Jews. Mohammed Yasin this week became the most senior party figure to be suspended since former London mayor Ken Livingstone, after the surfacing of a social media comment he made in February 2016. The party took action after being handed a dossier – not seen by Jewish News – on Yasin’s past comments and

social media shares by The Sunday Times, with topics ranging from Israel to
the Holocaust and the Rothschilds. The paper said one of the examples showed Yasin sharing a post from the Lord Dreadnought site, which quoted actor Mel Gibson saying: “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” The post, which attacked “Zionist madness”, allegedly shows people laughing, under the line “when someone tells me it’s not the Jews”. Another post Yasin allegedly shared considers “why Israel is a problem” before detailing how the US had funded
the Israeli military “due to Holocaust propaganda” while another reportedly said US imperialism “needs Israel to keep the masses permanently at war”. The Times alleges Yasin shared a picture showing a rabbi next to the words: “Goyim [non-Jews] were born only to serve us. They have no place in the world, only to serve the people of Israel.” A Labour spokesman said: “We take all allegations seriously and fully investigate them in accordance with our rules and procedures.”

BFUH NAMES NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE A veteran fundraiser and member of Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue is joining British Friends of United Hatzalah (BFUH) as its new chief executive. Assaf Admoni previously headed British Friends of Migdal Ohr, following spells at Childline, Leonard Cheshire, Norwood and the National Autistic Society. United Hatzalah is a first responder charity in Israel, with trained volunteers reacting to medical emergencies on motorcycle ambulances, often arriving first to perform life-saving resuscitation.
FIRST BRIT NAMED ON MDA BOARD
A British supporter of Israel’s emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) has become the first non-Israeli elected to sit on its Israeli board of trustees. Irving Carter, vice-president of MDA UK, will serve on the board in an honorary capacity, bestowed on him by Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev at a fundraising dinner. MDA UK chief executive Daniel Burger said Carter was “one of Magen David Adom’s greatest supporters,” adding: “This demonstrates how MDA in Israel relies on Jewish communities.”
Chelsea teams up with JN for Shoah education Jewish News has teamed up with Chelsea Football Club to hold a fundraising dinner featuring untold stories of strength and survival from the horror of the Holocaust. Light from the Dark will take place at the club’s Stamford Bridge stadium on 24 January and all proceeds will go to the Imperial War Museum’s (IWM) project to redevelop its Second World War and Holocaust Galleries. Hosted by award-winning comedian and writer David Baddiel, the evening will feature inspiring stories from Holocaust survivors, including renowned journalist Hella Pick. The will also be testimony from Chelsea FC chairman Bruce Buck, IWM director general Diane Lees, Rabbi Nicky Liss, Chelsea FC first team players and many more special guests still to be announced. Musical entertainment will include a performance of a special piece by composer Neumeyer, who died in Thereseienstadt in 1944. There will also be the opportunity to bid on unique items in a live auction, including the chance to fly in an iconic T9 Spitfire, travel with the Chelsea team to a European away match, or even the chance to be a Premier League chairman for the day. Chelsea said: “All funds raised from the event will go towards the construction of IWMs new gallery and with the support of Jewish News, we are confident the evening will be a great success.”
Khan keen on Israel trip Sadiq Khan will visit Israel as “soon as possible”, but has ruled out a trip next year because of his re-election campaign. The London Mayor spoke to Jewish News about the importance of economic and cultural ties between the capital and Tel Aviv, as well as fighting antisemitism in London but said: “Next year I might be focused on winning re-election in 2020, but as soon as we can, we’re going to go. “I’ve met with the mayors
of some of the great cities in Israel, and we’re keen to go when we can. I’m keen, if for no other reason, to reassure the world post-Brexit …we’re going to carry on being openminded, outward-looking and pluralistic.” He spoke about furthering cultural links between London and Israel, and urged nonJewish Londoners to “try and understand the psychological trauma our Jewish friends feel when they saw the [Pittsburgh] terror attack”.
ANTISEMITISM ‘A SMEAR’ Roman Abramovich launched a campaign to tackle antisemitism back in January
Meanwhile, the club, which is fourth in the Premiership, has promised to take the strongest possible action against any supporters found to have sung antisemitic chants during its game last week in Budapest. Minutes into a Europa League clash with Vidi in Budapest’s Groupama Arena, some Chelsea fans were heard singing a derogatory chant about Tottenham supporters, featuring antisemitic language. Chelsea attacked the “brainpower” of those fans who “shamed the club” at the match.
A left-wing Labour group has suggested claims of antisemitism in the party are “ruling class propaganda”, aimed at preventing Jeremy Corbyn from being prime minister. The Labour Representation Committee (LRC), whose president is Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, said in a 39-point statement that “anti-Zionists” were being expelled from Labour while “more and more councils are adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance
Association (sic) [IHRA] definition and examples of antisemitism and using it to discipline workers”. The LRC conference manifesto, Preparing our Movement for the Struggles Ahead, says: “The preferred option of the ruling class is to prevent Corbyn becoming PM. Labour Against Antisemitism’s Euan Philipps told the Jewish Chronicle the LRC’s comments were “outrageous” and McDonnell should “resign immediately” as its president.

News / Council ban / Floyd rethink / Limmud beckons
Reasons to be cheerful: Islington bans Atzmon Islington Council has banned “antisemite” Gilad Atzmon from performing with legendary band The Blockheads on Friday night, writes Adam Decker. Jewish News can reveal the council confirmed following a complaint from a member of the Jewish community, that the controversial Israeli jazz musician would not be allowed to perform at the Councilowned Assembly Hall. Atzmon’s past statements have included, “Jewish ideology is driving our planet into catastrophe” and “I’m not going to say whether it is right or not to burn down a synagogue, I can see that it is a rational act.” He has also argued that we should “take seriously” the idea that “Jews are trying to take over the world”. In a statement, Islington Council said: “Under the 2010 Equality Act, the Council must, in exercise of its functions, have due regard to
the need to foster good relations between different races and religions within the banner. “The council took account of the fact that Mr Atzmon’s presence at the hall, and knowledge of his presence among residents of the borough, might harm such relationships, as well as the council’s duty to tackle prejudice and promote understanding within the borough.” Welcoming the decision, Stephen Silverman, director of investigations and enforcement at Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), said: “Gilad Atzmon is a notorious antisemite who makes extensive and frequent use of social media to broadcast his hateful views about Jews to the public. Antisemites must be made to suffer the consequences of their racism. “In banning Mr Atzmon from playing in its borough, Islington Council has taken a commendable stance that upholds the principle of

zero tolerance for antisemitism, and shown admirable solidarity with the Jewish community.” Earlier this year, Atzmon was successfully sued by Campaign Against Antisemitism chairman Gideon Falter, after the musician accused him of personally profiting from fabricating antisemitic incidents. Atzmon has recorded and performed with numerous highprofile artists, including Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams and

Gilad but, in this country, he is supposed to have the right to air his opinions freely and encourage open discussion on matters that are important to him,” he added. Atzmon has been approached for comment.
Band’s boycott U-turn A Pink Floyd tribute band has reversed its decision to boycott Israel and will perform there next month, writes Joe Millis. The UK Pink Floyd Experience had originally called off its three shows in Be’er Sheva (4 January), Tel Aviv (5 January) and Haifa (6 January) after former Floyd frontman Roger Waters wrote on Facebook that singing his songs in Israel would be “an act of unconscionable malice and disrespect”. Waters is well-known for his support for the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement (BDS). However, the tribute band said: “In January 2017 the show was invited to perform in Israel… The shows got a wonderful reception from friendly and enthusiastic audiences.

Israeli musician and concert organiser Ziv Rubinstein said: “It was a terrible situation, their lives were threatened, they were very scared.”

The participants, from a record 41 countries, will hear and see presenters from Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis to Israeli Eurovision winner Dana International. Coroner concerns / Shul merger / PM’s call / Ramon mourned / News
Only nine non-invasive Hackney post-mortems Up to 42 times as many non-invasive post-mortem examinations were carried out in areas with large Muslim populations last year than were ordered in the inner north London area overseen by coroner Mary Hassell, Jewish News can reveal. Official figures show there were only nine non-invasive post-mortems conducted in Hassell’s area in 2017, which includes Hackney and Stamford Hill, despite a huge row and legal battle over how she handles cases involving religious families. Jewish leaders have called for the greater use of noninvasive techniques such as CT or MRI scans, which can sometimes prevent the need to open and examine the body internally, and are ordered at

the coroner’s discretion, with the deceased’s family agreeing to meet the costs. The number of non-invasive post-mortems conducted in Hassell’s patch matched the number from 2016 but, by contrast, there were 378 noninvasive post-mortems conducted in the Black Country in the West Midlands, up from 179 in 2016.
Similarly there were 373 non-invasive post-mortems in South Yorkshire, up from 140 in 2016, while there were another 267 in West Yorkshire, which includes Bradford, and 100 in Leicester. In 2015, Hassell was taken to court again by a Jewish family who wanted a family member to have a scan instead of a surgical post-mortem.
They won an injunction and the right to a judicial review in the High Court, where judges ruled later that year religious families can ask for scans or blood tests if their religion demands the corpse remains intact. A spokesman for the Adath Yisroel Burial Society said at the time that judges had “stepped in to prevent breaches of human rights, allowing the applicants to follow their religious beliefs… On both occasions the autopsies demanded by Ms Hassell proved completely unnecessary as noninvasive scans conclusively established the cause of death”. Two months ago, the burial society said relations with Hassell were much-improved, after she lost another court case brought by the society, in which judges deemed her “cab rank rule” policy of releasing bodies unlawful.
The only way is merger The merger between two of Essex’s largest synagogues has been approved by the United Synagogue Council, after the two communities overwhelmingly backed the move. Redbridge and Ilford United Synagogues will now hold a competition to decide
the name of the new community, in Beehive Lane, the current home of Ilford shul. As part of this merger, a refurbishment programme will be undertaken in the new year to ensure that the new community has improved facilities for its more than 2,000 members.
MAY: JEWS SHOULD FEEL SAFE Theresa May has called for 2019 to be the year in which “every one of us” commits to tackling antisemitism. John Mann MP told May that for 400 years Britain “has been a place of safety and security” for Jews” but said “2018, many in the Jewish community are questioning whether this will be the case into the future, and
a disturbingly large number of young Jewish people, are questioning whether they should remain in this country.” May said: “Jewish people should be able to feel safe and secure in this country. I never thought I would see the day when [Jews] living in this country questioned whether they should stay.”

Special report
Is Raab poised to be the next in a short line of Jewish PMs? Jeremy Havardi on what history could have in store for the former Brexit secretary
A
ccording to some, Dominic Raab, the former Brexit Secretary, is the frontrunner to replace Theresa May as prime minister in the event she resigns. His articulate manner and telegenic appearance have persuaded many he is the best candidate for the top job. If he achieved this, Raab would be the second person, either Jewish or of partial Jewish ancestry, to become UK prime minister. Raab is the son of a Czech Jewish refugee who fled to Britain in 1938, leaving behind family who would later perish in the Shoah. Exactly 150 years ago, Britain had its first Jewish prime minister in the form of the charismatic and witty Benjamin Disraeli. Despite his father baptising him as a child into the Anglican faith, ‘Dizzy’ remained a Jew, possibly in his own eyes as well as those of his detractors. As historian Derek Taylor points out: “Disraeli was always known as ‘The old Jew’ and there are books detailing the antisemitism he suffered throughout his political career.” When he stood for election, he faced cries of ‘Shylock’ and, later, people accused him of having a ‘foreign’ mentality. Disraeli, the ‘One Nation’ Tory, would go on to reinvent the Conservatives, and as a two-time prime minister, introduce social reforms in housing, public health and labour relations. British Jews have also been leaders of the opposition (Michael Howard for the Conservatives, Ed Miliband for Labour), Foreign Secretary (Rufus Isaacs, Sir Malcolm Rifkind and David Miliband), Home Secretary (Herbert Samuel, Leon Brittan and Michael Howard) and Chancellor (Nigel Lawson and, as recently revealed, George Osborne).
Ed and David Miliband, Lord Lawson and Lord Howard came close, but Benjamin ‘Dizzy’ Disraeli, right, remains one of a kind There have also been Jewish Governor Generals in British colonies, including Sir Matthew Nathan (Sierra Leone, Gold Coast, Hong Kong) and both Sir Isaac Isaacs and Sir Zelman Cowen (Australia). There has been a Jewish Chief Minister of Singapore (David Marshall) and Gibraltar (Joshua Hassan). As politicians, Jews have risen to prominence in Europe. France has had a number of Jewish prime ministers, including Leon Blum who in the 1930s intro-
duced important labour reforms in the National Unity government. After being imprisoned during the Vichy era, he became prime minister briefly in a post-war coalition government. Pierre Mendes-France and René Mayer also served as prime minister for short periods in the postwar period, as did Michel Debré who, although raised as a Catholic, was the son of a famous Jewish physician. Italy’s three Jewish prime ministers were Luigi Luzzatti, Alessandro Fortis and Sidney Sonnino (of Jewish ancestry from his father). Luzzatti was noted for
introducing measures of social reform, including compulsory accident insurance and voluntary insurance schemes. In 1970, Bruno Kreisky became the first socialist (and Jewish) chancellor of Catholic Austria, and he, too, implemented reforms, including the decriminalisation of homosexuality and equality for women. There was rather less liberalism in the rule of Matyas Rakosi who, as Hungary’s de facto ruler until 1956, oversaw the death and imprisonment of thousands of his fellow countrymen. Ruth Dreifuss became president of the Swiss Confederation in 1999, the first woman to hold this position. Jan Fischer, the son of a Jewish Holocaust survivor father and a Catholic mother, was prime minister of the Czech Republic between 2009-10. In Russia and the Baltic States, too, Jews have risen to the most prominent political positions. Sergey Kiriyenko (Jewish father), Mikhail Fradkov and Yevgeny Primakov all served as prime minister of Russia under Presidents Yeltsin and Putin, while Zurab Zhvania became Georgia’s fourth prime minister in 2004, dying in suspicious circumstances the following year. Volodymyr Groysman has held the same
position in Ukraine since 2016. When Latvia became independent, Zigfrids Anna Meierovics served as its first foreign minister and later became prime minister in the 1920s. Meanwhile, in formerly communist Romania, Petre Roman became prime minister when the country went through its first free elections post 1989. But Jews have also wielded political power elsewhere. London-born Julius Vogel was New Zealand’s prime minister between 1873 and 1875, a position also held briefly by Sir Francis Bell in 1925. Sir John Key, who won three elections, is the son of a Holocaust survivor. Jews have been either prime minister or president in Peru (Pedro Kuczynski, Salomon Ghitis, Efrain Goldenberg and Yehude Simon), the Dominican Republic (Francisco Carvajal), Honduras (Juan Lindo, Ricardo Maduro), Panama (Eric Delvalle) and Guyana (Janet Jagan). Lindo, of Jewish ancestry from his father, was previously head of state in El Salvador! In many countries over the past two centuries, Jews or those of Jewish ancestry have taken the ultimate responsibility for their country’s welfare, security and international standing. Raab may soon join the list.

Jews with postgraduate qualifications are the least engaged members of the Jewish community, according to research published by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR), writes Joe Millis. The research, Academic Achievement and Engagement in Jewish Life: First Signs of a Brain Drain?, uses four sample surveys of British Jews conducted over the past 23 years. It focuses on the way in which highly-educated Jews differ from others in their sense of identity, religious and ethnic behaviour, their marriage choices, perceptions of Israel and their social involvement in Jewish life. Written by JPR senior research adviser and leading specialist in contemporary Jewish life, Professor Stephen Miller, the research also

a readiness to acknowledge and adapt to such findings may be crucial to any effort on behalf of the Jewish community leadership to address the issues of intellectual mobility it highlights. JPR executive director Jonathan Boyd said: “Among the more important claims made in this report is Miller’s finding that the active Jewish community is failing to retain a representative proportion of the most academically qualified Jews. “We are, in effect, losing some of our collective intellectual resources, with the possibility that the Jewishly identified community will be progressively denuded of its best intellectual resources, assuming we measure intellectualism along academic lines.”

NE0-NAZI COUPLE JAILED A neo-Nazi couple who named their baby son in honour of Hitler have been jailed for membership of a terrorist group. Adam Thomas, 22, and Claudia Patatas, 38, were found guilty after a trial of being members of the extreme right-wing organisation National Action, which was banned in 2016. Thomas was jailed for six years and six months while Patatas was sentenced to five
years. A sentencing judge told them they both had “a long history of violent, racist beliefs”. At trial, the jury heard Thomas and Patatas gave their child the middle name Adolf, which Thomas said was in “admiration” of Hitler. In conversation with another National Action member, Patatas said “all Jews must be put to death”, while Thomas had once told his partner he found “all nonwhites intolerable”.

Australia’s capital gain Australia has decided to formally recognise West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, but will not move its embassy until there is a peace settlement between Israel and Palestinians, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced. He said Australia will recognise East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital only after a settlement has been reached on a two-state solution. Its embassy will not be moved from Tel Aviv until such a time. While the embassy move is delayed, Morrison said the government will establish a defence and trade office in Jerusalem and will also start looking for an

– as the seat of the Knesset and many of the institutions of government – is the capital of Israel.” He said the decision respects both a commitment to a two-state solution and longstanding respect for relevant UN Security Council resolutions. Israel captured East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in a move that is not internationally recognised. Israel considers East Jerusalem an indivisible part of its capital, while the Palestinians seek the area, home to the city’s most sensitive holy sites, as the capital of a future state.
‘NEW LOW’ FOR DIASPORA American Jewish leaders this week launched a scathing attack on Israeli policies, saying they want to “throw their hands up” because of Netanyahu’s attitude towards the Palestinians, Trump and Progressive Jews. The leaders have also warned top officials from the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs that “relations between Israel and US Jewry are at their lowest point since the state of Israel was established”. Eric Goldstein, the chief executive of the UJA-Federation of New
York – the largest in the US – said that two main issues distance AmericanJews from supporting Israel: the strong support shown to the Trump administration by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the actions taken by his government in regard to the Palestinians. “People who, up until three years ago, were the biggest supporters of Israel now say to us they want to throw up, that all of their love and labour on behalf of Israel went down the drain,” Goldstein said.

Children who lost their childhood
This week, Germany finally agreed compensation for those who fled the country’s Nazi regime as children on the Kindertransport. Each of them, now in their 80s or older, will receive one-off payments of around £2,250. These are the children tortured by a lifetime of faded memories of mums and dads who found the inner strength to do the unimaginable – send their little ones into the unknown to save them from Nazi terror. Most never saw their parents again – the fathers and mothers they waved behind among the six million. In all, more than 10,000 children were rescued. About 1,000 of those who boarded Kindertransport trains are alive today, the majority living in this country. To its credit, the German state has been punctilious about the claims process. Since 1952, some £55 billion has been paid to more than 800,000 victims. Previous survivors have had claims accepted for loss of education and livelihood, but this is the first time there has been recognition of loss of childhood. The Kinder, by virtue of fleeing their parents and their homes, are said to have lost their childhood, even if they found sanctuary with sympathetic families. It’s a meagre sum, but no amount given can compensate for what was taken. As this week’s front page asks: How do you put a price on childhood? How, indeed. LET’S COMMEND PM, NOT CONDEMN I refer to Emma Arnold’s letter, ‘I Hear Sartre Laugh’, criticising Jewish News’ positive coverage of Theresa May and must take issue with her (Jewish News, 6 December). Come what may, our prime minister has been a good political friend to the UK Jewish community and, on the international stage, to Israel. She has vigorously spoken out against antisemitism and maintained the right of Israel to exist, free from military and terrorist attacks. We should be grateful, not mocking, of her efforts to engage with us and stand up for Israel, when it would have been much easier, not to. Even more to the point, she has made

ORGANIC FREE RANGE IS MORE HUMANE I was amazed to read the letter from Shimon Cohen regarding kosher meat (Jewish News, 13 December 2018). To state all price points are catered for is simply not correct. However, I agree animal welfare is paramount, which is the essence of kashrut. How does Mr Cohen explain that we have only one choice of chicken – those kept in small cages, fattened
with growth hormones and slaughtered after a brief existence? Does he want us to believe our chickens and beef are equivalent to free range organic produce, free of antibiotic and growth hormones and generally available to the wider public? If this is true why isn’t he publicising this every time there’s a flurry of anti-schechita activity?

Thank you, JNF UK In these troubled times, it is all too easy to feel our community is on its last legs. Politically, and £1m boost for Israel socially, we are under education greater pressures than at Toda raba! say thousands of pupils after charity windfall any time in recent decades. So what a breath of fresh air it was to read on the front page of last week’s Jewish News about JNF UK’s wonderful £1.2 million grant to boost Israel education in our schools. The money will benefit thousands
of youngsters and give them a stronger relationship with the Jewish state – the sort of relationship, I hope, that I enjoyed when I was a schoolboy. Thank you to JNF UK for all you do for our community. Next time we read something negative in the press, keep in mind that it isn’t all bad news all of the time.

Jewish schools across Britain gave a warm shalom this week to a £1.2million windfall for Israel education programmes, writes Adam Decker. The grants from JNF UK will benefit more than 12,000 pupils at 18 primary and secondary schools and aims to help strengthen Jewish identity and young people’s connection to Israel. Primary schools were eligible to receive grants of up to £10,000 a year, while secondary schools were invited to apply for up to £50,000 a year to expand their Israel education programmes. The grant programme is unique as it gives the schools the ability to shape the programmes in line with their ethos and decide how the money is spent. During the year, the schools will partner with one of JNF UK’s projects in Israel, including the Derech Eretz Leadership programme for underprivileged youth and Yerucham Music Conservatory, the only one of its kind in that area of the Negev. JNF UK chairman Samuel Hayek said: “For more than 100 years, JNF UK has played an integral part in Israel’s development,

supporting every area of Israeli life. The school programmes will empower the next generation of young Jews, increasing their understanding and knowledge, strengthening the connection they have with the state. It will show them how they can play an important part in Israel’s future.” Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, said: “A strong connection to Israel means a strong Judaism and that’s because Israel is a central element of the Jewish faith. “It’s for that reason that I welcome enormously this significant investment and initiative. “The JNF will be enabling
schools to avail themselves of a wide variety of activities and to be able to carry them out within the curriculum of the school and according to the school’s ethos. It’s a brilliant plan.” Among the schools benefiting from the grant are Hasmonean Primary, London; Mathilda Marks-Kennedy School, Mill Hill; Brodesky School, Leeds; King David Primary, Liverpool; Immanuel College, Bushey; and JFS. A spokesperson for PaJeS, the umbrella organisation for Jewish schools, added: “It is lovely to see an initiative that encourages Israel education in our schools.”

Theresa May kicked off a tumultuous week in British politics by addressing Monday’s annual lunch of the Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI). ‘FLAILING’ WAS TOO MILD Jonathan Hoffman complained on last week’s letters page about what he termed the distortion in your reporting of the events at the Zionist Federation biennial (Jewish News, 13 December). I was at the event with my partner, and let me tell you that “flailing” was a mild way to describe the reception to Mr Hoffman’s candidacy and motion. “Shellacking” and “one hell of a beating” come to mind.
FAIR DINKUM, COBBER
I’m delighted that, after 70 years, Australia has at last recognised West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. I am likewise delighted to now recognise West Canberra as the capital of Australia. Naturally, in the spirit of solidarity, East Canberra should now be put under UN control as the future capital of the native Australians. As they say in Oz, “Fair dinkum, cobber.”

GANTZ... A MACHER!
Mr Hoffman received just four votes for his candidacy and three for his motion. Assuming he voted for himself, that makes three and two supporters respectively. As for his anger at being described at right-wing, that, too, is mild considering Mr Hoffman’s oft-stated positions on Israel.
You reported last week that the acclaimed Israeli General, Benny Gantz, is considering challenging Bibi Netanyahu for the job of Israeli prime minister (Jewish News, 13 December). If this comes to pass and the general prevails, he’ll definitely be the gantzer macher!

WE’RE BETTER TOGETHER Your editor’s piece last week on why the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and Board of Deputies should work more closely and even consider merging was illuminating. I have long wondered why we need two umbrella organisations duplicating one another’s work. The Board is a remarkable communal body. I am unaware of another with its longevity. It exerts its positive influence across the country and is an enriching presence in and
around my neck of the woods. I’m less familiar with the JLC, which still seems distant to the Jew in the street. It clearly has clout. I was unaware it includes the likes of JW3 and Jewish Care in its membership. As a community, we are so much better, stronger and safer when we are together. I hope the Board and JLC keep this in mind.

Chelsea on the attack to clean up reputation ALEX BRUMMER
W
CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL
hen my young sons and I first became season ticket holders at Chelsea in the early 1990s our seats were in the friendly ‘family section.’ Imagine our shock when I spotted that the person sitting next to us, with his child dressed in a blue babygro on his knee, had a swastika tattooed on his arm. The fan swore like a trooper at opposing players (and our own) and seemed to reserve the epithet ‘donkey’ for black players. This person plainly represented the worst of supporters but, over the years, I came to think widespread racism was a thing of the past. The visceral, tribal hatred of Tottenham I fondly imagined was down to the self-identification of the north London’s club as ‘Yids’ and bitter London rivalry. Clearly, one totally underestimated the fierce racism among sections of fans. This in spite of the fact that black and Asian supporters – who sit near us in the upper section of the East Stand – always are treated by those around them with
respect and comradery. Recent events have shaken confidence that the appalling behaviour and antisemitism that plagued football in the 1970s and 1980s had been eliminated. The myth is that it is now confined to continental clubs like Roma unused, as we are in Britain, to seeing so many black players. How wrong you can be. In successive weeks we have seen the reputation of Chelsea Football Club eviscerated. An unexpected victory against Premier League champions Manchester City was overshadowed by the sight of four fans, hatred on their faces, allegedly hurling racist abuse at England star Raheem Sterling. The fans have been identified and suspended and the incident probed by CFC and the Metropolitan Police. Worse followed. When Chelsea fans travelled to the Europa League tie against Vidi in Hungary last week they saw it as an opportunity to put their antisemitism on display. Under the leadership of hard man Viktor Orban, Hungary has shown flashes of its Second World War racism – turning fire, for instance, on Hungarian-Jewish billion-

CHELSEA FANS PUT THEIR HATRED ON DISPLAY LAST WEEK IN HUNGARY aire George Soros over his funding of liberal political and educational causes. Social media showed Chelsea fans in Budapest carrying a Chelsea Headhunters flag (a notorious gang) featuring an SS death head insignia. The paradox of this renewed outbreak of racism and antisemitism is that it comes at a time when Chelsea’s beleaguered owner. Russian-Jewish billionaire Roman Abramovich, has been running an all-out campaign to rid Chelsea of such tendencies. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis was recently a guest at the ground to endorse a reinvigorated campaign against antisemitism. Indeed, the match programme for the Manchester City game, at which the Sterling
incident occurred, includes the announcement that Chelsea has teamed up with Kick it Out to release ‘a uncompromising short film encouraging people to report abuse.’ Produced by writer Ivor Baddiel, a Chelsea fan, the film seeks to raise awareness of the consequences of antisemitic behaviour, its effect on Jewish fans and the wider community. The club’s chairman Bruce Buck was seen at a recent game in Brighton pleading for calm among away fans. Fans of Brighton, owned by local Jewish philanthropist Tony Bloom, taunted the Chelsea contingent with a chant of ‘Racists! Racists! Racists!’ Arguably the public debate on antiemitism has been given some legitimacy by the Labour Party’s tolerance of anti-Zionist abuse and the embrace of right-wing activist Tommy Robinson by an enfeebled UKIP. But no one should doubt Abramovich’s personal commitment to the cause of defending Jews. After all, he recently has donated £30.5m to upgrading the Imperial War Museum’s Holocaust Galleries and is committed to using Stamford Bridge to raise further funds for the cause.

US-Saudi alliance vital for hopes of regional stability DAVID WOLCHOVER BARRISTER AND AUTHOR
O
n 29 December 1170, four royal courtiers waylaid Archbishop Thomas à Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. As it happens, I have a personal interest in the story: it was my son-in-law’s putative ancestor (and namesake) who delivered the crushing mortal blow. King Henry II, of course, had nothing to do with the assassination. It was all a dreadful misunderstanding. In a fit of frustrated pique over some transient tiff, Henry had supposedly muttered: “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” Never was it the king’s aim to be taken literally, but his dim-witted knights tragically missed the point of his rhetorical irony – it is not known if they were Jewish – and Henry lost his beloved soulmate. Thoughts of the Becket killing come to mind in the wake of the murder in Istanbul of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, arch-critic of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman. The parallels are uncanny. The prince’s henchmen reportedly demanded Khashoggi return with them to Riyadh. Henry’s men wanted Becket to accompany them to Winchester for questioning. In each case, the victim refused. The Saudis admit members of the hit squad were close to the prince, but bin Salman implicitly denies sanctioning the murder when he loudly proclaims his country’s determination to get to the bottom of the atrocity. So what’s he saying? That he never ordered the killing but his misguided acolytes must have misread his intent when he mouthed angry imprecations against his exiled nemesis? If Henry could get away with it, so might yet the prince. He might urge us to accept it would have been folly to embark on a crime easily exposed. But how often have I commended that argument to juries, only to hear them pronounce the word “guilty”? It might stick in the craw to acknowledge the demands of geopolitical reality, but it will probably benefit the state of Israel and the prospects for regional stability if Donald

WHATEVER TRUMP’S OTHER FAILINGS, HE IS SPOT ON WITH BENJAMIN NETANYAHU WHEN IT COMES TO THE MULLAHS OF IRAN Trump family’s friendship with bin Salman can survive the Khashoggi murder. We should never lose sight of the continuing existential threat to Israel posed by the mullahs of Iran. We should not for one moment forget the regime’s sponsorship of Hezbollah, now equipped in Lebanon and Syria with an estimated 40 times the number of rockets the faction deployed in 2006. Nor should we overlook what horrors Iran’s current President, Hassan Rouhani, is capable of perpetrating. Just like bin Salman, he beguiles, but as I have previously asserted in this newspaper and demonstrated elsewhere, he was one of the Iranian government’s three principal conspirators who plotted the Lockerbie
bombing in 1988 (forget about Ghaddafi). Whatever Trump’s other failings, with Benjamin Netanyahu he is spot on when it comes to the mullahs. It will be remembered that on 4 November 1979, agents of the then-new Iranian regime under Ayatollah Khomeini stormed the American Embassy in Tehran and held its 52 staff hostage for 444 days. The 39th anniversary is the date the Trump administration has set for proscribing crude oil purchases from Iran. The loss of revenue may finally pave the way for the collapse of the mullahs and the founding of a true secular democracy. Trump’s alliance with the House of Saud is vital. It is absolutely pivotal.

Schindler’s List’s rightful place in popular culture JORDAN HOFFMAN FILM CRITIC
I
don’t think I could watch Schindler’s List again,” my mother says, when I tell her I have just attended a press screening for the 25th-anniversary re-release of the film. It’s an understandable position, one Steven Spielberg himself mentions in a short introduction at the beginning of the new 4K digital print. “Hearing these stories is difficult,” he warns, “but it is important to see the worst and the best in people.” This is Schindler’s List in a nutshell for me. It is important to me, and for the Jewish experience, but it is also — and I wish there were a better word — entertaining. Oskar Schindler was a mediocre businessman who could succeed only when he had access to slave labour. He exploited Poland’s Jews for war profiteering and his sexual appetites. Then, at some point along the way, he realised he needed to stop the abuse and somehow undo his actions. He liquidated his wealth to save the lives of his
workers and became synonymous with the Righteous Gentile. And since 1993 he has been the face of Holocaust cinema. This was controversial in its day. How could the most important film about the Holocaust be about someone who isn’t Jewish? And leave it to facile Spielberg, some said, to make a Holocaust movie with a (somewhat) happy ending. Critic J. Hoberman famously criticised the scene in the Auschwitz showers, where a trainload of Schindlerjuden were sent in error, requiring Schindler to swoop in like a goyim-ex-machina for a rescue. Is it not beyond good taste to use the images of petrified Jews, quivering naked in the showers, hoping for water and not Zyklon-B? That mix-up actually happened. Spielberg’s decision to include it is “difficult to watch”, and probably the most psychologically cruel moment in the whole film, but it is the lowest point, the deepest valley of death, juxtaposed later with the hilltop of life, the Schindler Jews “today” in Israel. The final walk is the sequence I remember best because, in 1993, I worked as a cinema

usher, and when that last scene hit I knew I had to gather my dustpan and sweep up for the next screening. There would be people dabbing their eyes as they exited, but like any job you grow a little immune to it. Even with Israeli violinist Itzhak Perlman playing John Williams’s outstanding score, I’d hope they’d clear out a little faster so I could get back to my menial tasks. If I could go back now I would find those people, especially any with numbers on their arms, and be a little kinder. Something else I took for granted was just how boldly Zionist the film’s conclusion is. After Schindler and his wife flee, a lone rider approaches Itzhak Stern and the other Jewish workers. “Are there any Jews left?” he asks. No response. Another question: “Where should we go?” Answer: “Don’t go east, that’s for sure. They hate you there. I wouldn’t go west either, if I were you.” Then: “We could use some food.” Answer: “Isn’t there a town over there?” The music comes up: Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (“Jerusalem of Gold”). Not very subtle. Now, it’s practically a criminal act to suggest Jews should make a homeland in Israel without first offering a list of prevarications. Here’s a record it wasn’t always this way. A recent survey showed one out of five millennials in the USA had minimal understanding of the Holocaust. This is upsetting, but maybe not so new. In 1993, at New York University of all places, two different non-Jewish classmates felt the need to “apologise” to me after seeing the film. Other Jewish students reported the same phenomenon. It made us feel awkward. None of us had anything to do with the Holocaust; it was all okay. That’s the difference for me between seeing the film then and now. The big conclusion, in which Schindler, played by the strong and broad Liam Neeson, has the realisation that he “could have got more out”, was, I confess, something I once lightly ribbed as being a little over the top. Naturally, it’s the part that kills me most today.
Here we have the enormous Neeson sobbing and collapsing into the arms of the tiny and frail Ben Kingsley, overcome by guilt that he has been part of the system for so long and that he has been too greedy, or too frightened, to take a stand. This is a moment all of us who have lived a little bit must confront in ourselves. No, we are not living in the Third Reich, but even in our personal lives, and with our families, or even with ourselves, are we doing enough? Are we doing what’s right? No, probably not, at least not always. So, as my mother says, and as Spielberg acknowledges, it’s hard to watch Schindler’s List. But it is outstanding. It’s difficult to speak solely about the craft of something so emotionally fraught, but this is masterful film making. It opens with a benediction, a candle prayer in colour, the smoke cutting to the puff of a train then the rhythmic thrum of bureaucracy. Stamps, names, papers. Schindler arrives in Krakow and schemes his way to his position. He impresses the right Germans and enlists the right Jew. It’s like a heist picture, and the music is upbeat and propulsive. Even his repossession of a rich Jewish home as the well-heeled owners are dismissed to the dirty ghetto is cut together with a degree of playfulness. Like Schindler himself, we are removed from the horror, navigating the waves to come out on top. Until, thankfully, something comes along to change it. I’ve seen Schindler’s List a number of times and yes, perhaps due to its “happy ending”, I know I’ll watch it again. I can’t say the same for Son of Saul, a remarkable artistic triumph that exploits cinematic formalism in all the best ways, but is too unbearably bleak to revisit. There will likely never be another Holocaust film as widely accepted as Schindler’s List, a critical and economic phenomenon but luckily a triumph as well. Go out and see it again in a cinema. And may we all live long enough to see its next revival in another 25 years.

A new tradition! The revival of the much-loved musical Fiddler On The Roof explores universal themes of love, racism and oppression, its leading actress tells Francine Wolfisz
T
he first Broadway production might have opened more than 50 years ago, while the setting evokes the shtetl life that exists no more – and yet, Fiddler On The Roof quietly reminds audiences antisemitism and racism are still very much problems of today. “Sadly, it feels so relevant right now,” says leading actress Judy Kuhn, who stars as Golde in Trevor Nunn’s critically-praised revival currently running at The Menier Chocolate Factory. “People are being thrown out of their homes on a regular basis and refugees are trying desperately to find a better life for themselves. It’s happening all over the world.
Those last images of Tevye and his family being forced to leave their homes is one that we see in the newspapers every day.” Despite this, it’s not unusual for Kuhn to notice “gasps” from the audience as the show reaches its final scenes. “People, of course, think of Fiddler as funny, with all the joyous dancing and all the music, which is there – but I think they forget how heartrending it is also.” At times uplifting, but also strikingly poignant, Fiddler On The Roof opened in 1964 to great critical acclaim. Based on a series of short stories by Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler On The Roof features the unforgettable music of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick and was the first in musical theatre history to surpass 3,000 performances in a single run. The musical remains one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history, has won nine Tony Awards and spawned a critically-acclaimed 1971 film starring Topol as Tevye. For this latest revival in London, Nunn has focused on making the production more intimate, by placing the audience up close to the actors. In terms of the storyline, Fiddler is a show that is quintessentially Jewish, agrees Kuhn, and yet its huge success over decades shows that its appeal spreads well beyond Jewish audiences. Judy Kuhn as Golde

The four-time Tony Award nominee, who sang the title role in Disney’s animated 1995 film, Pocahontas, tells me: “Like with any great piece of art, the more specific it is, the more universal it is. “The immigrant experience seems so palpable for so many people, wherever their family came from or for whatever reason they came to their country, especially in America. “That’s the beauty of the piece and of all well-written theatre – it might not be your experience, but there’s something everyone can relate to and learn from.” For Kuhn, the dilemma posed for her character is one she says directly relates to her, given her own Jewish family history. “It’s certainly true to my grandparents, my mother’s parents, who emigrated a little later than this takes place, but their experience was the same – they were thrown out of their homes, had to flee Russia and made their way across Europe and eventually to New York. “My father’s family came to America much earlier in the mid-19th century, but yes, the show absolutely does link me to my own family’s journey.”
Kuhn adds that her character Golde “reminds me of my grandmother in a certain kind of way”. Describing her character, she says: “Golde is very practical, no nonsense, kind of the glue in her family. I think she discovers in the course of the show what it means to love and to care for the people in her life. She’s such a strong person and I really appreciate that about her.” Aside from evoking the struggles of shtetl life, Fiddler is of course most famous for its soundtrack, which includes a string of well-known songs, including If I Were A Rich Man, Sunrise, Sunset, Matchmaker and To Life. For Kuhn, though, her personal favourite is Do You Love Me?, a touching duet between Tevye and Golde. “It’s one of the great love songs of all time,” she enthuses. While her latest role does not involve much singing, Kuhn is well-known for her vocal talents – she famously sang Colours of the Wind in Pocahontas, which won its composers an Academy Award for best original song in 1995. She looks back on that opportunity “with great fondness, a really special time”.
But it’s on the stage, as much as in the recording studio that Kuhn feels equally at home. For now, that home is Anatevka and the trials faced by Tevye and his family. While the show may have been around for a long time, she hopes audiences will nevertheless “come away finding something unexpected”. She adds: “I hope they are moved by it, and leave with an understanding of its relevance, especially with what’s happening in the world today.” Fiddler On The Roof runs at The Menier Chocolate Factory until 9 March 2019. It’ll be alright on the Dolomites!
Rachel Soffer travels to the stunning Italian-Austrian border and enjoys the breathtaking views of this world heritage site
F
rom the moment you arrive in the picturesque Dolomites town of Ortisei, you’re in for a treat. The attention to detail in this region, nestled between the Italian and Austrian borders, is more than evident and nothing short of spectacular, as we make our way towards our accommodation. Winding and weaving our way through the Italian Alps, we were met with spectacular views of perfectly-constructed Bavarian-style homes and buildings. Arriving at the Adler Hotel in Ortisei, we felt an immediate sense of calm. The smell of the hotel, the calming music playing and the very welcoming and polite nature of the staff all felt like the start of something very special indeed. This historic hotel, which has maintained many of its original features, including its 19th century grand staircase, is just a short train ride away from Verona, a charming town that plays host to more than just the house with a little balcony said to be the inspiration behind Romeo and Juliet’s famous scene. There is also a massive 1st century Roman amphitheatre, which still hosts concerts and large-scale opera performances today. But Jewish travellers may also want to visit the Great Synagogue, with its grand 18th century architecture. Other places of interest include the city of Bolzano, around an hour’s drive away, which is also home to the South Tyrol Museum of Archae-
ology, where the famous Ötzi the Iceman – a perfectly preserved 5,000-year-old man – is on show. But, first, we eagerly explored the Adler Hotel. Inside, it feels spacious and open, but equally evokes a serenity and a sense of privacy; the hotel is designed from top to bottom to help guests unwind and escape in the most stylish of ways. Upon reaching our room we were struck by the beautiful, original wood carving on the wall, as designed by one of the founders. Then we saw the view from our private balcony; breathtakingly special vistas of the mountains, as well as the local town. We were treated to fresh fruit, tea and coffee in our room and, dining at the Adler Dolomites ensures you escape the pressures and noise of dayto-day life too. Not only does the hotel cater for all dietary needs, with fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and much more on offer, but it feels very much like a luxurious home away from home. Each section of the dining room has a slightly different feel to it, ranging from cosy mountain lodge to grand dining room, and where you eat is entirely down to you. The quaint ski town of Ortisei and its surrounding region could well have come straight from a picture postcard and is a delight to explore, with shops selling artisan wood carvings, clothing, gelato, boutiques and gift shops, meaning you’re never short of options. Our stay coincided with an annual concert,
Top: View from the Adler Hotel of houses around town. Above: Rachel and David enjoy a bike trip around town. Left: A relaxation room overlooking the mountains
during which the locals dress in traditional 19th century outfits and dance through the town orchestrated by a marching band. It was easy to imagine what life was like in Ortisei in days gone by. Hotel guests get free e-bike rentals, so exploring the scenes just a stone’s throw away from the hotel is easy. In under five minutes of cycling, you’ll find view after breathtaking view of meadows, mountains and undisturbed towns perched upon mountains. There is also a cable car (just €20 per person) with a journey time of under 15 minutes, which takes you more than 2,000m up to the peak of the town, a UNESCO heritage site. The sights atop Ortisei were ones that cannot be forgotten. We walked around the endless
meadows and reached the Adler Lodge, yet another gem in the Adler crown, which offered freshly-made coffee and fresh milk from the very cows grazing on those wonderful meadows. Returning to our hotel, we had a huge choice of spa treatments, saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools and relaxation areas. One of the flagship treatments of the Adler Dolomites is the Savonage treatment, which cleanses skin and relaxes the body, leaving you feeling as refreshed as you do relaxed. After the treatment, there is the choice of lounging in one of the numerous relaxation rooms, visiting the on-site doctor at the adjacent Adler Balance for a health consultation or simply lying outside beneath warm mountain sunshine. The Adler Dolomites is a hidden beauty in this region and we will definitely consider coming back here again.
RACHEL’S TRAVEL TIPS Rachel flew from Stansted to Verona with Ryanair and then travelled by train to Bolzano. Ortosei is a 45 minute car journey away. She stayed at the Adler Spa Resort Dolomiti, where a double superior room starts from €1,464 for four nights, on a half-board basis. Details: adler-dolomiti.com/en

Join Altermans Solicitors as a Consultant Over the last three years, six of us have joined Altermans as consultants – to work in property, company commercial, litigation, employment, private client and family law. All of us have been partners elsewhere, and know the pain of running a team, hitting chargeable targets and driving revenue. However, each of us knew deep down that what we wanted to do was find somewhere where we could work for our clients in a friendly and supportive environment. We found it at Altermans in Finchley, North London. The firm is run by Gabriel Alterman, who is growing a business where lawyers can work on their own or build a small team that meets their needs. The firm is not a “virtual network”. We work together, talk together and respect each other’s expertise. We share fees, reward each other for referrals, and have regular gatherings – both social and work – to make sure we’re on track. If this sounds like a firm where you could find a niche and be at home, get in touch to arrange a chat and come and meet us. There’s no management-speak; just lawyers working together. You can contact Gabriel directly at gabriel@altermans.co.uk or by phone on 07794 085 617. Our website is at www.altermans.co.uk for more details of the firm.
INGREDIENTS
I was excited to discover a new cut of meat – boneless, skinless turkey thigh at my butcher – and decided to make this recipe with it. You could, of course, use chicken pieces if you prefer. I have lightly dusted the meat in a sesame herb spice mix and then slow roasted it for two hours to tenderise. Prepare up to two days in advance ready for the oven.

What does it say about... Voyager 2
Vayechi
BY RABBI SHAULY STROM
BY RABBI BORUCH BOUDILOVSKY Three verses, narrating the death of Joseph, seal the book of Genesis. Like Jacob, his father, Joseph asked to be buried in Israel, not Egypt. However, he did not request to be buried immediately. Instead, Joseph instructed the people of Israel to take his remains along with them only when they eventually leave Egypt. As one of the most powerful people in the greatest civilisation of his time, Joseph could easily have arranged for a burial in the place of his choice soon after his passing. It is possible he knew the people of Israel would endure unimaginable suffering in Egypt. Either because of a shrewd prediction or because Joseph may have been told by his ancestors that God revealed to Abraham, ‘You shall surely know that your seed will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will enslave them and oppress them for four hundred years’ (Genesis 15: 13). Dreading an unbearable future for his nation, Joseph wisely and lovingly planted a seed of hope, which would inspire the people to dream of freedom and the land of their ancestors. Before his death, he declared: ‘God will surely remember you and take you up out of this land to the land that He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob’ (Genesis 50:24). This message of hope became the core Jewish identity of the slaves over subsequent dark centuries. Because of their collective oath, they promised to take his remains with them on the day of their freedom. In his final recorded message to his family, and in the closing verses of Genesis, Joseph ensured the nation would never forget they are destined to be free.

Monday, 10 December marked a great moment for space discovery. Fortyone years after launch, and having surveyed Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto, Voyager 2 become the second man-made object to reach interstellar space – the area between star systems in a galaxy. Rabbi Luzzato, a philosopher from the 18th century, says the universe was created in order for humanity to explore. Voyager 2 shows mankind’s ability to surpass expectations, but also is a terrific example of never giving up on something in which you have invested. There is a revealing episode in last week’s Torah portion that highlights this very idea. Jacob is estranged from Joseph, his favourite child, who

over Joseph’s alleged death, although 20 years had elapsed. Rashi explains the physiological mechanism of forgetfulness exists to enable people to “move on” and not wallow in grief and despair over losing a loved one. But Jacob was unable to be comforted over the loss of Joseph – and, in reality, his son was alive and living as viceroy of Egypt. The Jewish story has always been one of hope and today’s Israeli national anthem, Hatikvah, is a song all about hope and vision towards the future. Similarly, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks says: “Judaism is a journey to the future. It is the only civilsation whose golden age is yet to come.” It is this hope that has kept the Jewish nation going for two millennia – and the same hope that meant Jacob refused to be comforted. As Lord Sacks adds: “And so must we.” Rabbi Shauly Strom is an educator at Aish UK

Limmud reminds us how disagreements and differences can be put aside
‘You can’t kill a burglar during the day, but it’s fine at night’ BY RABBI DANNY RICH Parashat Mishpatim (Exodus 21:1 – 24:16) is an early attempt to create a comprehensive law code and, thus, is a miscellany of obligations and prohibitions. It observes: “If a thief is found tunnelling and is beaten to death there is no bloodguilt but, if the sun has risen, there is bloodguilt and restitution must be made....” This states that if the burglary takes place in daylight and it is assumed the burglar had no intent other than to steal, the householder could have prevented the burglary or further harm without killing the thief. In the event the burglar loses his life, compensation is payable, which affirms the general Torah principle of the sanctity of human life – even a burglar – over the protection of property. A thief at night, however, is a different matter from both the perspective of the burglar and of the householder. It is assumed that at night, a residence will be occupied by
BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS
sleeping persons who, when awoken, cannot be sure of the intention of the burglar, who might respond with violence if disturbed. It is further assumed the burglar will fight to get away, and therefore, the legal condition of ‘imminent threat’ justifies the householder’s claim of ‘lawful self-defence’. In English law, it is similarly assumed that a residence is occupied at nighttime, which aggravates the offence. A householder may take ‘reasonable’ steps to protect him or herself, other residents and indeed one’s property, but ‘reasonable’ is always a matter of judgment and circumstances. The Torah lays down a sensible and sensitive teaching by which, while every life including the burglar’s has value, there are circumstances where a householder may claim the necessity of taking that life. Danny Rich is Senior Rabbi of Liberal Judaism and has sat as a magistrate for more than 20 years
I’ve wanted to run away many times this year. Perhaps buy a farm or B&B, and get away from the endless noise, nastiness and nudging of community life. It has felt like an even more turbulent year than normal, and, at times, the noise of Jewish disagreement has become so unpleasant I’ve wanted to switch it off. After years in the world of interfaith, I have come to value what my friend, the Rev Patrick Morrow, calls ‘a quality of disagreement’. There have been times where we have totally lost any quality to our disagreements – despite the interfaith world being the place where some of the most productive intrafaith encounter happens! But I’m ending the year at Limmud, one of the most hopeful Jewish places. For the next week, a gathering of some 2,500 Jews will study and play, debate and eat together. We haven’t been as a family for five years, partly because of the cost, and
Woodcraft Flooring
partly because it can be pretty overwhelming and not very restful for a Jewish professional. But this year felt the year to head back, to be reminded that the British Jewish community can do togetherness, respectful disagreement, and can even have multiple denominations and political affiliations sharing a building, praying in ways that suit them, and still come together for a good nosh and natter afterwards. I’m sure plenty will want to remind us of the times their favoured speaker or group were shouted down or controversially uninvited
at Limmud. But these stories are a tiny minority of the Limmud experience, and largely it is a place of open debate and positive disagreement – a wonderful Jewish paradigm. The best and the worst of the community has played out this year on social media, and this has also been the place (as well as on the streets) where many of us have become aware once again of our vulnerability as Jews and as a community. When we are able to all come together, to remember what in our Judaism is worth celebrating, it changes the narrative for us internally, and perhaps gives us the strength to challenge the narratives that worry us externally. It is being together in that one space as a vast, diverse, debating body that certainly gives me hope. May 2019 be a better year for us all. HAZEL KAYE CHARITY EXECUTIVE
JEWISH BLIND & DISABLED Dear Hazel My son left university in the summer and is now frustrated at having to live back in the family home. He has multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair. While away he received the support he needed, but now has to rely on family, which is not great for him or us. It’s not easy for any of us, but his social worker said he was too young for any of the places she knew about, which are all for older people. Then someone suggested Jewish Blind & Disabled. Is it true you take people from the age of 18 upwards? Joanna

RESOURCE Dear Lesley I haven’t looked for a new job in ages and these days most roles are only advertised online. Where do I start? Phillip Dear Phillip Yes, most jobs are advertised online now. Websites such as Indeed and Total Jobs have literally
thousands of roles in all fields so that could be a good place to start. You can also find sites that cater for your area of interest, whether it’s charity, local government, NHS, part-time, freelance etc. So get looking on the internet! Social media is also really useful for jobseekers. If you’re already on Facebook, you can use it informally to tell your friends what you’re looking for, or you can search groups such as ‘Jobs in Stanmore’. LinkedIn is a kind of professional Facebook. Having your profile here means recruiters can easily find you – and many of them will be looking. You can also follow
Dear Joanna I’m so glad you got in touch. Yes, we do house people from the age of 18 upwards, who have physical disabilities or impaired vision, in their own state-of-the-art mobility apartment, which is specially designed to enable them to manage as much as possible for themselves. In your son’s case, he could have one of our wheelchair accessible apartments, which would certainly help him regain the independence I’m sure he enjoyed at university. And you’ll probably be very reassured to know we have resident house managers who are on call and on-site 24/7 in case of any emergency, so his independence doesn’t have to come at a cost to your peace of mind! Although we have long waiting lists, we do allocate our apartments according to each applicant’s needs, so please do start the process as soon as possible and hopefully we will soon be able to give you both back your much-prized independence.
specific companies on Twitter or type in a search ter, such as #salesjobs. The best way to find a job is still via networking – using your contacts to tap into the so-called ‘hidden jobs market’. Some of the more traditional ways can work, too, such as specialised recruiters, adverts in newspapers or even walking down the high street looking for adverts in shop windows. Unfortunately, job-hunting isn’t an exact science, so the best thing is to use a variety of approaches. Or come and talk to Resource about which approach might be the most suitable for you?

Dear Michael You are correct, the reported ease with which scammers can insert false emails into a legitimate financial communication – leading to the provision of false bank details is alarming. The banks say these receiving accounts are legitimately opened, yet clearly have depended on false identification being provided by the criminal. The main line of defence is to be alert for any change in payment instruction, even if it seems legitimate. Phone the supplier on the nationally advertised number, not via a number accompanying the email, and get them to

confirm the bank details. Second, avoid all offers that seem too good to be true and any investments offering guaranteed high returns. Third, banks never ask you to move your money for protection . Anyone asking, however convincingly, is a fraudster. Fourth, never give out your pin numbers and/or passwords to anyone at the bank. Real bank staff will never ask. And fifth, if possible, keep one dedicated bank account for all online purchases. This should be kept in credit by just enough to make your online purchases, so should criminals gain access, there is only so much they can siphon off. Good luck and stay vigilant.

The Place for a Simcha Over the last 33 years Kaifeng has been host to virtually every sort of celebration imaginable.
We get nachas…
It is surely a great compliment when someone chooses to use Kaifeng for their celebration. We feel it our responsibility to ensure the event is memorable and make it personal to you. “The setting, the food and service were impeccable. Many of our guests had not eaten Chinese before and they loved it!” LN NW11 “The phone has not stopped ringing with everyone calling to say how much they enjoyed the food and the ambiance. I cannot think of anywhere it would have been better” DB, Edgware “I can only say that whoever said that there is no such thing as perfection obviously did not celebrate his 50th birthday at Kaifeng.” JH, NW4 “Kaifeng deserves every accolade showered upon it” RG, Stanmore “Words cannot express our gratitude for the superb party that you put on for us. The whole evening was faultless, from the superb food to the charm and courtesy of your staff. The comments and praise that we have received are too numerous to mention” DJ, Elstree “My friends could not stop raving about the delicious food. The specially printed menus were a lovely touch.” PL, EC4
