Most olim ‘not Jewish’ New aliyah figures highlight split in Israeli society

Almost 60 percent of people who made aliyah last year are not recognised as Jewish according to Israel’s rabbinate, latest figures from the country’s Central Bureau of Statistics reveal, writes Joe Millis. Of the 30,300 olim in 2018, only 12,600 are considered Jewish, with 17,700 (58 percent) not, leading the head of an Orthodox group that wants to make it easier to convert to Judaism to warn that Israel faces a “demographic crisis” if it doesn’t show more religious flexibility. Rabbi Shaul Farber, chairman of the Itim movement and the Giyur Kehalachah independent Orthodox rabbinical courts, said: “Israel is creating a demographic crisis of its own making. These people are part of the body of the Jewish people around the world,

and the Jewish people have a responsibility to provide them with a homeland for historical reasons, this is part of the justification for state of Israel. “Instead of trying to tamper with moral, historical, and political realities, we should spend time trying to encourage conversion rather than eliminate it,” he added. The Israeli Rabbinate and Orthodox parties have blocked attempts to help newcomers, mainly from former Soviet states, become Jewish. Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau has recommended legislation so only halachic Jews can be granted Israeli citizenship. Rabbi Dr Jackie Tabick, Convenor of Reform Judaism’s Beit Din, told Jewish News: “It is very sad that the Orthodox

authorities in Israel have continuously failed to address the need to welcome our brothers and sisters who have come to Israel seeking to affirm and explore their Jewish identity. “People of Jewish descent moving to Israel should be welcomed and encouraged to find an expression of Judaism that is meaningful to them and to be officially welcomed into the Jewish family. If they seek conversion to Judaism, different routes to that goal should be equally acceptable to the State of Israel”. Danny Rich, Senior Rabbi of Liberal Judaism, said: “This demonstrates once again that children of Jewish fathers ought be treated equally to that of children of Jewish mothers since both can show an equal commitment. News / Shechita ban / MK anger / Aliyah stats NEWS IN BRIEF

HONDURAS ‘AGREES’ TO MOVE EMBASSY Honduras has agreed in principle to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández and the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed the issue in Brasilia, where they attended the inauguration of Brazil’s new president, Jair Bolsonaro. The trio also discussed upgrading Israel’s consulate in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, to a full embassy.

MEDICS URGE ACTION ON GAZA SUPERBUGS Leading medics have called for states to forget the politics of Gaza and focus on the “epidemic” of antibiotic-resistant superbugs now threatening the Palestinian territory. International doctors working in Gaza and the West Bank say shortages of antibiotics, clean water, power and fuel for generators have left them unable to follow the most basic medical protocols. Analysis by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism shows Gaza’s health system has become fertile ground virulent infections which could spread to Israel.

Belgium shechita ruling ‘offends human rights’ UK Jewish leaders this week warned that Belgium’s shechita ban “offends against the human right of religious freedom” as the country’s law to stop non-stunned slaughter took effect. The implementation of the ban, which came into force in the region of Flanders on 1 January, will have an impact on both the country’s Jewish and Muslim communities, and European Jewish figures say it “puts Jewish life at risk” and runs counter to public pronouncements from politicians that Jewish life should be protected. Marie van der Zyl, president of the Board of Deputies, said: “This is a deeply illiberal move, which offends against the human right to religious freedom and is a setback to Belgium’s reputation as a progressive country.” S h e

added: “The very premise of our religious laws is to ensure that animals slaughtered for food have as little pain as possible. We support efforts to overturn this in the Belgian courts and are in contact with our Belgian counterparts on how we can help.” Rabbis were among those in Europe reacting to the ban. “Time and again, we are told by senior EU officials that there is no Europe without the Jews,” said Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, president of the Conference of European Rabbis. “These bans undermine those statements and put Jewish life at risk… Words are weak when actions hurt.” Belgium has now joined four other countries – Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland – in banning the slaughter of animals before they have been stunned. The trend has resulted

in several legal challenges, including one financed by the US-based Lawfare Project. Meanwhile, a Channel 4’s Dispatches programme, The Truth About Vegans, on Wednesday showed anti-meat protesters chanting: “It’s a Holocaust. It’s a Holocaust, you Nazis.” Shimon Cohen, campaigns director of Shechita UK, told the programme: “This changed into something a little bit more troubling when the people started to scrawl antisemitic graffiti on our buildings using Holocaust imagery, as though we are performing a Holocaust of the chickens.”

NEWS IN BRIEF

SEX EDUCATION ‘AN ABUSE OF RIGHTS’ Lawyers acting for a Charedi father have written to the Department for Education alleging that the Government is violating his human rights by requiring teachers to teach his children about different genders and sexualities. Representatives of Shraga Stern, a director of a London-based construction firm whose children attend an independent school, lodged the allegations in a letter to Education Secretary Damien Hinds MP and Education Minister Nick Gibb MP.

HSBC DIVESTS FROM ISRAELI COMPANY Europe’s largest bank, Londonbased HSBC, is divesting from Israeli defence contractor Elbit over “human rights”. HSBC sources confirmed to the Jerusalem Post that the bank, said to be the seventh largest financial institution in the world, had divested from Elbit, one of Israel’s largest defence companies. HSBC “supports observance of human rights principles as they apply to business,” a spokesperson said in connection with the divestment. But HSBC does “not take positions on political issues”, the spokesperson added.

MK COMMENTS ATTACKED The Board of Deputies has criticised the “deeply reprehensible” comments of an Israeli politician who said Israel should round up members of its Muslim population and haul them into “re-education camps” as China does. Oren Hazan (pictured), a member of Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party, was referring to the mass internment camps in the Muslim-majority region of Xinjiang, recently verified by Western diplomats. Chinese officials call them “re-education camps”. Hazan nevertheless suggested Israel should follow the Chinese lead. Doing so, Hazan added, would bypass the Geneva Conventions and he expressed sorrow that

home demolitions and family deportations were falling foul of the law. “Tearing down homes – the High Court prevents it. Deporting families – it’s already losing it,” Hazan tweeted in Hebrew. “Then came the Chinese and apparently found the right legal outline to combat terrorism – as I am sure there is no convention, not even in Geneva, that in 2018 objects to proper education. I’m for it.” A Board spokesman said: “These are deeply reprehensible comments. It is a betrayal of the Jewish conscience to suggest placing any ethnic or religious group into camps. Hazan clearly needs an urgent and sharp lesson in Jewish history.”

Latest aliyah numbers show Israel’s ‘demographic crisis’ Continued from page 1 “The rabbinic Orthodox stranglehold on Israeli public life continues to threaten Israel’s democracy and the sooner these religious ‘privileges’ are removed the better for all.” The Jewish Agency’s Isaac Herzog said: “Every Jew who comes to Israel and establishes a home here completes another piece of the wonderful mosaic of the Jewish people in their historic homeland.” Most of the new arrivals were from Russia and Ukraine, with France and the US taking up third and fourth spots. Of the almost one million immigrants who arrived in Israel after the Soviet Union col-

lapsed, 400,000 were not halachically Jewish. This number is increasing every year both due to natural growth and continued immigration, leading to fears in the Orthodox community of a long-term problem of intermarriage between Jewish Israelis and those who are not recognised as such by the rabbinate. Aliyah from Britain fell by four percent to 660 in 2018. There was also a large drop – 25 percent – in the number of immigrants from France, with only 2,660 making aliyah last year. Israel had expected a surge in antisemitism in France would lead to a boost in immigration figures.

HET HEAD URGES SOCIAL MEDIA ACTION Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock has called for social media platforms to take more responsibility in tackling online antisemitism and Holocaust denial. She said the abuse should be treated in the same way as inappropriate sexual images, with offending material immediately removed. Calling for internet giants to intervene when needed, she described antisemitism on social media as pretty relentless, adding: “Social media should take more responsibility.”

APPLE SUED OVER HEBREW SIRI VOICE The woman behind the female Hebrew voice of the Waze navigation app is suing Apple for using her voice as the Hebrew Siri. Israeli radio broadcaster Galit Gura-Eini filed a lawsuit last week for about £51,000 ($66,000) in Tel Aviv District Court, the Israeli business daily Calcalist reported. The lawsuit alleges Apple has been using Gura-Eini’s voice recordings without authorisation. Apple has responded that her “voice on the Siri app is nothing but syllables joined together by an algorithm”.

Golders Green mosque cancels exhibit of Muslim Shoah heroes A planned exhibition celebrating Muslim Albanians who helped, protected and rescued their Jewish neighbours during the Holocaust has been scrapped. No reason has been given for the cancellation, but Rabbi Natan Levy, head of operations at Faith Forums for London, and one of the organisers behind the event, said: “We will continue to focus on building local relations even though this event has been cancelled. However, we

are confident after reviewing plans there is goodwill to continue working with communi-

ties in Barnet.’ The venue was put under pressure by opponents of

the exhibit including Roshan Salih, editor of British Muslim news site 5 Pillars, who urged a boycott. The event was intended to be part of the mosque’s drive to open and maintain dialogue with its neighbours, in the wake of objections made to its opening, as the Centre for Islamic Understanding. The Yad Vashem event, due to have been held on Sunday, looks at the response of Muslim Albanians who defied Nazi occupiers. Alba-

nians did not just protect their own Jewish citizens but also offered sanctuary to Jews who had arrived in Albania and faced deportation to camps. Levy called the exhibition “a powerful reminder that during the Jewish community’s darkest hour, the Muslim community in Albania were one of the few who did not stand by when the Nazis attempted to eradicate Jewish neighbours. It’s important to remember we have historically supported each other.”

PALESTINIAN JAILED OVER BRIT’S MURDER A mentally-ill Palestinian man who stabbed a young British woman to death in Jerusalem has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after a plea bargain Lawyers for the family of Hannah Bladon, 21, an exchange student who was killed on a tram in 2017, said they were outraged at the “leniency” of the sentence.

The court heard Jamil Tamimi, 59, had just learned at the time of the attack that his sons felt he should remain in a mental institution. He was said to have stabbed University of Birmingham student Bladon

“at random” in the hope that he would be shot and killed by Israeli officers in response. The prosecutor and judge acknowledged that Tamimi was mentally ill despite the fact Israeli police spokesman Micky Hannah Bladon Rosenfeld when the killing

occurred blamed the attack on “an Arab terrorist from East Jerusalem”. Bladon, who was on a year’s exchange at Hebrew University, had been on her way to a church to volunteer when she was attacked on the tram by Tamimi The tram was packed with Christians celebrating Good Friday and Jews marking Pesach.

ReWalk award / UK visit / News

Technion honours bionic suit pioneer British charity fundraiser Claire Lomas has been made an honorary Fellow by Israel’s Technion as a result of her pioneering use of the ReWalk body suit. Lomas, a former equestrian event rider, had a riding accident in 2007 which left her with severe spinal injuries. In 2012, she became the first UK user of the ReWalk suit, completing the London Marathon in 17 days wearing the device. It was invented by Technion graduate Dr Amit Goffer and was processed through the university’s Technion incubator for further development before it was used in clinical trials. The suit is a bionic walking assistance system which uses powered leg attachments to enable partially paralysed users to stand and walk upright. Dr Goffer invented the device after becoming quadriplegic after a lifechanging accident, and although not able to use it himself saw it become a worldwide success in helping paraplegic cases. Technion awards six honorary fellowships each year to international public figures who have made outstanding contributions in the field of science and technology.

Claire Lomas crosses the marathon finishing line in her ReWalk body suit

Lomas, who lives in Leicestershire, was nominated by Alan Aziz, now chief executive of Technion UK, who took her to Israel to meet the developers of the ReWalk in 2014. She told Jewish News: “I am delighted to be awarded with an honorary degree by the Technion in Israel. It will be 12

years since my life-changing accident left me half-paralysed. The ReWalk suit, which was developed at the Technion, has been a huge part in my fundraising and rehabilitation — and I have lots more plans for the future. I am grateful for the use of such pioneering technology and proud to be the UK’s first ReWalk user.”

FREED BUSINESSMAN COMING TO LONDON sentenced him to 27 years in jail, prosecutors dismissed 72 immigration charges. He had his sentence commuted by Trump, having served eight years. He is due to visit London for five days from 17 January, and will give speeches in Stamford Hill and Golders Green. Rubashkin, who has maintained his innocence throughout, has many highprofile supporters, among them leading law professor Alan Dershowitz, who told Jewish News: “In my more than 60-year career, I have never seen such unfair treatment and injustice as in the case of Sholom Rubashkin. I have never seen a more bipartisan, diverse group of people seeking justice than in this case. If I had to narrow it down, there were three things in this case that helped galvanise such overwhelming support: the excessive sentence, the whiff of anti-Semitism and the prosecutorial and judicial misconduct.”

A Chasidic New Yorker convicted of 86 counts of fraud and money laundering before being pardoned by Donald Trump is to visit London this month. Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, who ran the biggest US kosher slaughterhouse before it went bust following a federal raid, was jailed for 27 years in 2009 but had his sentence commuted less than a year after Trump took office. The 59-year-old is the son of Aaron Rubashkin, a wealthy American Orthodox Jew who owned the now-bankrupt Agriprocessors, a slaughterhouse in Iowa raided by 900 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in 2008. The Postville Raid ended with 398 employees arrested, 283 of whom were from Guatemala or Mexico, with 18 underage. After a court convicted Rubashkin of 86 counts of financial fraud including bank fraud, mail and wire fraud and money-laundering and

Limmud Festival

‘Too many charities, not enoug The head of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) told the Limmud Festival in Birmingham that there are too many charities operating in the British Jewish community, writes Joe Millis. Discussing financial sustainability, Jonathan Goldstein said bluntly: “We’ve got too many charities. We’re raising £90million a year from private donations, trusts and individuals – that’s a huge amount of money. Yet I know there’s duplication all over the community. “Ultimately, over the next 10 years, I bet you that of the 35 organisations [which are part of the JLC], five to seven of them will have merged.” At the packed-out session, the JLC chairman also presented his organisation’s plans to strengthen the UK’s Jewish community. These included the first national conference of Jewish care homes, and education and mental health programmes. He said his organisation had identified financial sustainability, education, elderly care and young people’s mental health as “the biggest issues we have to address to ensure the continuing vibrancy of the Anglo-Jewish community”.

Goldstein noted that in 2016, 14 out of 21 Jewish elderly care homes around the country were in financial deficit, with the aggregate deficit being approximately £3million. A total of 17 out of those 21 were projected to aggregate annual deficit as high as £14million by 2020. The impact of this would, he said, “be seen most quickly in small communities because of the declining demand for care”. Goldstein said the JLC would hold the first national care conference of Jewish homes on 22 January in Birmingham, including most Jewish homes from around the country. “The old saying that a problem shared is a problem halved could not be truer than when you sit organisations around the table,” he said. “The most important thing that will come out of this conference is that people are sitting and talking about issues – and hopefully solutions will come out of it.” Referring to education, Goldstein said the JLC intended to roll out a new curriculum for Year 8 and 9 students in several Jewish schools in September. The curriculum would highlight Jewish issues “brought

to me by the last two Israeli ambassadors in London. They said to me, ‘we went around the schools and we talked to them about modern Israeli and Jewish history in the context of the formation of Israel – they don’t seem to know their stuff.’ How can they possibly be equipped on campus if they don’t leave their schools knowing the basics?” The curriculum would “tell the story within the context of the two-

state solution”, and would include “the order of the wars [in Israel], what created these situations, what triggered environments within Israel, what are the basic dynamics within Israeli social society today.” On young people’s mental health, he said: “I think we all know our teen-

agers are in distress. There have been two suicides at Jewish schools in the past two and a half years. “If you speak to Dr Mark Berelowitz [clinical lead for child and adolescent mental health services] at the Royal Free Hospital – our main consultant on this – he’ll tell you it’s not

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis believes UK Jews are living a wonderful life, although there is a genuine problem of growing antisemitism. Mirvis (pictured), speaking in front of a packed audience at Limmud Festival in Birmingham last week, recalled his appearance before the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee on Antisemitism. He said he was asked how he assesses the level of antisemitism in the UK today. Mirvis held up a white piece of paper on which he had scribbled a black dot. “I asked the panel, ‘what do you see’? thought I had gone absolutely meshuggah. They said there’s only a black dot... I said [it] is only about five percent of the paper, but 95 percent is white. “I said to them, in the next hour, I’ll be speaking about antisemitism – that black dot. But I want you to understand

that the 95 percent is also true. “Life for Jews in this country is wonderful. We are free, we are sitting here in Birmingham at the Limmud Festival. Amazing... Jewish communities are thriving. “Every week a new kosher restaurant opens, and they are all full –not awful! But in the midst of all this we have a problem – antisemitism. It’s a genuine problem. I’m not minimising it and the black dot is growing, but we do also need to celebrate what we get right.” Mirvis also noted that most of the community’s children attend Jewish schools.

The president of the Board of Deputies believes Jews have a future in the country – but a possible Jeremy Corbyn-led government will make life harder. Addressing the issue of “Do Jews have a future in the UK?”, Marie van der Zyl told a Limmud audience last Wednesday: “If there is a Labour government, we will get through it as Jews, but it won’t be easy and there will be tough challenges. For a start, Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to recognise a Palestinian state as one of his first acts in office.” However, she noted British Jews were “very fortunate to live in the UK. If you look else-

where – France, for instance – it’s much tougher. We can walk down the street with kippot on, we can wave Israeli flags and our schools are thriving. “We have been here a long time and faced challenges in

the past. We have contributed a lot and our rights are guaranteed. But if Corbyn is elected, I’m not leaving. And our lives are not in danger. It will be challenging, but there are other people we can work with.” She was particularly critical of those who had attacked the Board for inviting Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry to its dinner, and Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner to its Chanukah party. “We have to be pragmatic and prudent,” she said. “I have made it clear engagement does not mean concessions or appeasement.” Registered Charity No. 1113409

Thornberry: Jeremy ‘too upset’ to tackle Jew hate Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry drew jeers from a Limmud audience when she said Jeremy Corbyn was so “upset” by allegations of antisemitism against him he failed to act, writes Joe Millis. Interviewed by Momentum founder Jon Lansman (pictured) last Thursday, the Islington South MP also drew laughter when she repeated the claim that “there isn’t a racist or antisemitic bone in Jeremy’s body”. She recalled when former Prime Minister Gordon Brown was accused in the MP expenses scandal, he failed to act as he was shocked by the allegations against him. “When people accused Jeremy of being an antisemite, he was so upset, and as a result he has found it difficult to deal with the problem. He hasn’t dealt with it properly, but to call him antisemitic is wrong,” she said, adding the way the party conducted itself last summer was “shameful”, but leaders are not “gods, they aren’t perfect”. Part of the problem, said Thornberry, was that people who have lately joined the party from the far left who had been involved with Palestine advocacy suffered from “lazy, undisciplined thinking” when

just Jews in north London, this is an epidemic among young Jewish children. “If you speak to UJIA, which looks after all Israel tours, they’ll tell you their biggest issue, year after year now, is mental health of the children on the tours, not bad behaviour.

“My daughter was a madricha on FZY two summers ago, and she’ll tell you the biggest challenge she had was getting some of the young girls to eat.” After speaking to several communal mental health organisations, Goldstein said “what came out of this was the need to identify and signpost issues earlier than was previously being identified. “Parents were in denial, schools weren’t equipped, signposting wasn’t occurring, facilities weren’t available.”

equating all Jews with Israel. “It’s not Jews. It’s not even Israelis. It’s the Israeli Government,” she stressed. Asked by an audience member how, then, she could she serve in a shadow cabinet “under a Labour leader who would surely fail under your own definition?” Thornberry dodged the question. She said: “It is my core belief that only the Labour Party can improve this country and make it more socially just. And it is for that and many other reasons I ... believe it’s my duty to serve my party and make my leader the best leader he can be, and for us to be part of a leadership team.” However, Thornberry said there was a “far-left caricature” of equating capitalism with Jews that was “obscene” and revealed antisemitic attitudes. The party expansion

just before Corbyn’s election to the leadership had allowed some people who believe this to join, she said. “It breaks my heart to see how we’ve lost trust with Jewish people… why should people trust us?” she asked. Thornberry was clear, however, a future Labour government would “categorically” not cut funding to security for Jewish schools. Any reports to the contrary were the result of a “major misunderstanding”, which was the result of a misinterpretation of an interview with the shadow chancellor. “I’ve spoken to John McDonnell. This is a major misunderstanding. There is no way there will be any cuts to funding for the Community Security Trust,” she stressed. Addressing her own connection with Israel, Thornberry noted she had been visiting the state since the late 1970s, when her father was stationed there with the UN. “Every time I go, the division between the two sides is greater and the chance of lasting peace gets smaller”, she said, adding that Labour’s position “begins with a strong commitment to the two-state solution… for Israel to be safe and secure, for Palestine to be viable. It is terrible to see what is happening, because it is such a wonderful place”.

‘Jews, return to Yemen’ A Yemeni human rights campaigner hopes the country’s Jews will return once the bloody conflict between the government and Iranian-backed Houthi rebels ends. London-based Bara’a Shaiban was at Limmud last week giving a session on A Dummies Guide to Yemen: Past, Present and Future. He told Jewish News: “Jews in Yemen have never been seen as anything other than Yemeni. They are part of the country’s culture. Almost every house in Yemen has something designed or made by Yemeni Jews, from

artefacts to jewellery.” Yemeni Jews have a rich and long history, arriving in the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula after the destruction of the Second Temple and setting up a kingdom, Khaibar,

there before the rise of Islam. It was destroyed when Prophet Muhammed’s armies began expanding out of Mecca and Medina. Shaiban, an adviser to human rights group Reprieve as well as the UK Government and non governmental organisations, said the Houthis tried conspiracy theories against the Jews and other minorities, but the “general Yemeni population didn’t buy it”. “And now we hope the Jews who fled or were forced out of the country will come back.”

LGBT IN ISRAEL ARE ‘STRONGER’ Eurovision winner Dana International has told a Limmud audience that life for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people has changed for the better in Israel – although the Charedim in government were still making their lives difficult. Transsexual Dana, speaking last Monday only a few yards from Birmingham Arena where she won the song contest 20 years ago with Diva, said: “Back in 1998, the Orthodox said I was the wrong person to send to Eurovision [because of her sexuality]. “So, I said to my manager, ‘Why not take this ugly lemon

and turn it into delicious lemonade?’ So, I manipulated the Orthodox against themselves.” She added that although “nothing has changed” with regard to Orthodox attitudes – “because the Torah hasn’t changed” – “we are stronger now. We have social media, we have the internet, and we know how to respond. So, they have to think 10 times before saying anything nasty about us.” But Dana, who will perform at this year’s contest in Tel Aviv, said Shoah survivors in Israel are suffering because “the government has cut their allowances”.

IT’S A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN. Problem 1:

You’re a doctor who’s considering Aliya, but you’re understandably anxious about finding a good job in Israel.

Problem 2:

Solution:

The Jewish Agency is here to achieve two aims at once. We’ll remove your anxiety about Aliyah by helping you land the best possible job at the world renowned Sheba Medical Center in Israel before you even leave the UK. Let the employment market in Israel be an incentive, not an obstacle.

STUDY STRESSES SCALE OF SHOAH More than one million Jews were murdered by the Nazis in just three months in 1942, new research has revealed. This means that the Nazis and their accomplices were murdering up to 15,000 Jews a day during Operation Reinhart, the Germans’ genocide programme, said Tel Aviv University mathematical biologist Professor Lewi Stone. Stone, writing in Science Advances journal, suggests that the murder rate had previously been greatly underestimated. He wrote: “This study identifies an extreme phase of hyperintense killing when over 1.47 million Jews – more than 25 per cent of the Jews killed in all six years of World War Two – were murdered by the Nazis in three month surge. The kill rate in the Operation Reinhard period is approximately 83 percent higher than the commonly suggested figure for Rwanda – indicating previous comparisons have been based on incorrect accounting.” Stone said he found that the scale of the Holocaust had been underestimated because many records of killings were destroyed by the Nazis. However, he uncovered a major clue in the records of Deutsche Reichsbahn – the German National Railway – which transported millions of Jewish victims to death camps. Stone estimated the number of victims on each transport, and then calculated the rate at which the Nazis were killing. The study found that most of the murders occurred in August, September and October of 1942, when 1.7m victims were slaughtered.

Chelsea to police own fans at Spurs match Chelsea supporters will travel to Tottenham with their own club stewards in-tow next week in an unusual move aimed at curbing continued antisemitic chanting. Matches between the two clubs have a history of racist chanting, with Tottenham fans having long called themselves the ‘Yid Army’ in reference to their Jewish roots, but Chelsea fans have repeatedly used the word to cause offence. While Tottenham fans often travel to away matches with their own stewards, the Stamford Bridge club – which is owned by Jewish billionaire Roman Abramovich – has seldom done likewise, meaning Chelsea’s decision marks a change in tactics. The issue of Chelsea fans’ antisemitic chanting was repeatedly raised last year, with Labour leader Jeremy

Charly Musonda, Eden Hazard and Ross Barkley have backing Chelsea’s campaign against antisemitism. Inset: A Chelsea fan abusing Raheem Sterling

Corbyn even wading in to warn travelling supporters against singing offensive songs. But the matter remains problematic, with chants about “Yids” heard during Chelsea’s last two games, against Watford and Crystal Palace. Chelsea supporters are believed to be aggrieved that Tottenham fans are legally able to use the word ‘Yid’

in reference to themselves, since they see it as “reclaiming” the terms, whereas Chelsea fans using the same word will be ejected. Representatives of both sets of fans are due to meet police officers ahead of the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday, which is Spurs’ temporary home until their revamped stadium is completed.

ZF defends decision to host Olmert The Zionist Federation (ZF) moved swiftly this week to defend its decision to invite disgraced former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to address its 120th anniversary dinner. Olmert was convicted of accepting bribes and obstructing justice and served 16 months of a 27-month sentence. The charges related to a period in 2006 when he was serving as mayor of Jerusalem and trade minister. ZF chairman Paul Charney defended the decision to invite Olmert to the 24 February dinner, saying: “He has a story to tell and will be held to some tough questioning by an objective, renowned interviewer [ITV’s Rageh Omaar]. We want to bring relevant, interesting and even controversial speakers the community will be fascinated to hear from.” Ex-ZF director Gavin Gross had written on Facebook that Olmert “claims the convictions were a conspiracy”.

ISRAELI DRONE TECH DEPARTS GATWICK The Israeli technology believed to be behind the military hardware deployed to stop drones disrupting flights at Gatwick Airport has been withdrawn. Reported drone sightings at the airport caused mass disruption to passengers in the run-up to Christmas and the Army was brought in to help. Around 1,000 flights were affected. The Ministry of Defence spokesman said the military capability had now been withdrawn but “the Armed Forces stand ever-ready to assist should a request for support be received”.

Hitler to kippah: It’s the Cohen and the prince Nazi who turned Jewish A reformed neo-Nazi from Germany who once greeted friends with “Heil Hitler” has emerged as a kippah-wearing Jew called Yonatan after a ten-year journey via London and Kabbalah. Lutz Langer, who praised SS soldiers and dreamed of destroying “Jewish domination” in the belief Jews secretly controlled the world, revealed his story in an interview with Israeli TV show KAN Evening News. Yonatan, who now prays wearing tefillin and immerses himself in a freezing lake, said he was radicalised as a teenager by a Nazi-supporting karate instructor who played his young charges Nazi music. His road to recovery began with Kabbalah ten years ago in Berlin. He left the city to distance himself from his past and moved to London, studying and worked at the local Kabbalah centre. He also started his conversion there and did the brith mila in London.

Reformed Nazi Yonatan praying while wearing tefillin

In a special interview with KAN’s Antonia Yamin, he showed her the videos he used to watch, include those urging “bombs on Israel”, explaining that the Nazi ideology saw Jews as “the ultimate enemy… to be completely destroyed”. He also explained former comrades’ views on the Holocaust, saying: “Some approach it scientifically, asking how long does it take for a body to burn in an oven, and how long would it take to burn six million Jews… in terms of time, it’s just impossible. “Others just say it was legit-

imate, there was a law, there was a reason why they had to do it… I was one of those who thought it was all right.” He said his recovery began when he dreamt of the word ‘Kabbalah’ and woke up to see what it meant. He later undertook a threeyear conversion, including circumcision 18 months ago. Hezi Nathaniel, an Israeli living in Berlin, described how Yonatan became his friend. He added: “I connected with him very quickly. I don’t judge him according to what he used to be.”

Prince Charles has revealed his musical tastes were inspired by Holocaust survivors who taught at his Scottish school, and how he is “moved” by the music of the late Jewish singer Leonard Cohen. The heir to the throne revealed the Jewish links to his favourite music on BBC Radio 3’s Private Passions show, recalling how he enjoyed being taught the subject at his old school, Gordonstoun. “We had these marvellous music teachers who had

escaped the Holocaust in Germany and came to Gordonstoun and taught music there,” he told listeners. Among his favourite pieces, the prince chose Cohen’s Take This Waltz, loosely adapted from a Spanish poem.

Special report / Amos Oz: 1939 – 2018

Israel’s eloquent son Tributes have poured in from across the world after the death of Israeli author Amos Oz. The 79-year-old winner of the Israel Prize for literature was born in Jerusalem in 1939 and raised on Kibbutz Hulda, near Rehovot. He later lived in Arad in the south due to his asthma as the desert climate was better for his breathing. A peace activist who wrote about JewishArab relations, Oz studied philosophy and literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He began publishing his work in 1961 and produced more than 18 books in Hebrew, including novels, novellas, collections of short stories and essays, and some 500 articles and essays for Israeli and international periodicals. Most of his famous works, including Black Box, A Tale of Love and Darkness, My Michael and In the Land of Israel, were translated into more than 40 languages. His daughter Fania tweeted: “My beloved father, Amos Oz, a wonderful family man, an author, a man of peace and mod- eration, died today peacefully after a short battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his lovers and knew it to the end. “May his good legacy continue to amend the world.” Oz was shortlisted for the International

Man Booker Prize in 2017 alongside fellow Israeli novelist and eventual winner David Grossman, who won for his novel Horse Walks Into A Bar. Oz also served as a visiting fellow at Oxford University, an author in residence at the Hebrew University and writer in residence at Colorado College. Before beginning his university studies, Oz spent three years in the IDF, and returned to duty during the Six-Day War and Yom Kippur War. His military service helped hm to formulate a dovish political stance, and he was active in promoting dialogue and peace between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said Oz was one of the “great writers – not just of Israel or the Jewish people, but of the whole of humanity. Our generation has lost one of its most insightful voices”. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said: “He was a story of love and light and now a darkness has fallen. He was a literary titan, the glory of our creativity. Rest peacefully, Amos.” Benjamin Netanyahu described Oz as “one of the greatest authors of Israel. He contributed a huge amount to the re-birth of the Hebrew language… He

was a brave man and good friend.” Netanyahu said he visited Oz in hospital, but “I didn’t know he would die so quickly”. Jewish Agency chairman Isaac Herzog said: “Amos Oz will be remembered as a giant. His writing has influenced generations of Israelis, Jews and followers all over the world. His original and rich language, his moral strength and fight for justice will be his eternal legacy. Heartfelt condolences to his family.” Israel’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Tzipi Hotovely tweeted: “Amos Oz is a great loss to Israeli culture. His works will remain as inalienable assets for Israeli literature.”

Irreplaceable: Mourners atend this week’s funeral of Amos Oz in Tel Aviv

Arab List Knesset Member Ayman Odeh said: “I have met Amos Oz several times. Even when we argued [quite a bit!], he was a man of collaboration, he supported the end of the occupation. He was not afraid to say what was on his mind and did it with unusual talent.” Oz is survived by his wife, Nili, and his two daughters and son – Fania, herself an author and academic; Galia, one of Israel’s leading children’s authors, and Daniel, a poet, musician and writer.

Shalvi legacy / World News NEWS IN BRIEF

ISRAEL AND US QUIT UNESCO AT SAME TIME The United States and Israel have officially left the UN’s educational, scientific and cultural agency, the culmination of a process triggered more than a year ago amid concerns that the organisation fosters antiIsrael bias. The withdrawal is mainly procedural yet serves a new blow to Unesco, co-founded by the US after the Second World War to foster peace. Donald Trump’s administration filed notice in October 2017 to withdraw and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu followed suit. The Paris-based organisation has been denounced by its critics as a centre for criticism of Israel.

ISRAELI YOUTHS HELD IN ‘TERRORISM’ PROBE Three Israeli youths have been arrested reportedly as part of an investigation into a Jewish terror cell. Details of the investigation, a joint endeavour of the Israel Security Agency, or Shin Bet, and the nationalistic crime unit of the Israel Police, are under a gag order. Two of the youths were arrested in the northern West Bank and a third in Modi’in. The Honenu legal aid organisation said one of the youths is a minor and that he had been prevented from seeing a lawyer.

Aliyah icon gifts lifetime archive to national library An award-winning activist and educator who fled Nazi Germany for Britain before making aliyah has donated her personal archive to the National Library of Israel. Professor Alice Shalvi, who recently topped a Jewish News poll charting the contribution of Brits who have made aliyah, was awarded the prestigious Israel Prize in 2017 for her work in pioneering Israel’s feminist movement. Her personal papers include diary notes, letters and correspondence from her mother to her father in 1933, when he had already fled for England. The rest of the family left Essen in Germany several months later. Arriving in 1934, the eight-year-old Shalvi finished schooling before studying at Cambridge and the London School of Economics. She left for Israel in 1949, shortly after the formation of the state, where she became an educator, feminist activist, social advocate and professor emerita of English literature. She taught English at Hebrew University, then from 1975-90 served as principal of Pelech, a unique progres-

sive high school for religious girls. During this time she founded the Israel Women’s Network, which soon became the country’s major advocacy group on women’s issues. An observant Jew, she later headed the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, a graduate school initially affiliated with an American Jewish seminary, and led several social movements promoting peace, interfaith

dialogue and women’s rights. Of her donation, she said: “As a woman who has lived in Israel almost since its founding and has for much of the past 70 years participated actively in several of the country’s major social movements and developments, it seems important to make the material that has accumulated over that period available to researchers as well as to those of the

general public who are interested in social history.” In later years Shalvi has been showered with awards from Brown University, the Weizmann Institute and Ben-Gurion University, among others, and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin capped a remarkable career with the Israel Prize in 2017. Dr Aviad Stollman, the library’s head of collections, said Shalvi had “impacted Israeli society to an extent that few others have”. He added: “As a true trailblazer in terms of the struggle for gender equality, Jewish education for women and many other areas of social activism, her influence over the course of many decades continues to be felt from the political sphere to education and religion.” Stollman said the library, as the institution of national memory for the state of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide, was “humbled” to be entrusted with the archive, which would “provide fruitful materials for researchers and the general public in the near and distant future”.

Mandelblit said that “it was an obligation to decide” before the elections, so voters would be fully aware of possible charges before voting. The attorney-general’s spokesman said the meeting with the former legal chiefs was scheduled far in advance and the attorney-general told those present that “the process of making decisions in cases would continue as is standard despite the dissolution of the Knesset”. RESISTANCE HERO LOINGER DIES AT 108 Georges Loinger, a former member of the French Resistance who saved hundreds of Jewish children from the Nazis, died on Friday in Paris at the age of 108, France’s Holocaust Memorial Foundation confirmed on its website. Loinger, who was Jewish but looked Aryan with his blond hair and blue eyes, smuggled at least 350 Jewish children in small groups across the Franco-Swiss border after their parents had been killed or sent to Nazi concentration camps.

The lyric comes from the song ASMR by rapper 21 Savage. James shared it on his Instagram account, which has nearly 46 million followers. The lyric says: “We been getting that Jewish money, everything is kosher.”

Israel’s population has reached almost nine million as the state enters 2019 – but more than one in five people live in poverty, according to the annual report of the Israeli National Insurance Institute. The state’s population is now 8.972 million, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics, 6.668 million (74.3 percent) of them Jews. Almost 1.9 million (20.9 percent) are Arabs, with 426,000 inhabitants described as “other”. Special report / Israeli innovation

The new Israeli miracle drug that could cure aggressive brain cancer Neuroscientists at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan have discovered a new drug they claim has the potential to cure terminally-ill patients suffering from an aggressive brain cancer, writes Shoshanna Solomon. American politician John McCain recently died of the disease, called glioblastoma (GBM). According to medical industry sources, there are more than 240,000 new cases of diagnosed worldwide every year. Israeli neuroscientists Dr Efrat Shavit-Stein and Professor Yoav Chapman, who have been working on the treatment, published their discovery in the December issue of Frontiers in Neurology magazine. GBM is believed to be the most common and deadly primary brain tumor. Despite extensive research in the field, the results of current treatments are limited and there is no cure for the disease. It is therefore necessary to seek innovative approaches, Sheba Medical Center Q1 Lon-Wat 165x260 ad.pdf 1 said in a statement.

In recent years, research has found that thrombin, a coagulation factor that is secreted from tumor cells, and PAR1, a protease-activated receptor, play a part in the pathology and progression of glioblastoma. Based on this chemical structure, the Sheba neuroscientists created a drug called SIXAC, a new six-amino-acid-based compound, that inhibits the activation of PAR1. Innovators: Dr Efrat Shavit-Stein and “The drug has shown out- Professor Yoav Chapman standing results in an animal When the drug was adminismodel of the tumor and we hope to be able to use it soon in human tered by direct injection into the subjects with this terrible disease,” brain tumor, it had a life-extending Professor Chapman said in the effect and reduced tumor volume, the statement said. and improve survival in GBM patients, as well as potentially their quality of life by reducing tumor-associated edema.” The team is continuing to develop the drug, with the goal of treating humans “as soon as possible,” said Dr Shavit-Stein in the statement. “The progress of research from now on will depend on financial investment in the project.”

Special report / All the news that’s fit to predict

Gaze into our crystal ball for 2019... actually works. Someone suggests turning the country off and on again.

APRIL:

T

o say these are politically uncertain times is an understatement. And to paraphrase the great economist John Kenneth Galbraith: “The only function of making a forecast is to make astrology look respectable.” However, here at Jewish News Towers, we’ve had our arms twisted to take part in the mug ’s game of predicting what will happen in 2019. At the end of this year, dear readers, you can judge for yourselves how right/ deluded we were…

JANUARY:

yahu leads a minority government, he’ll fall first… or May… Probably Belgium’s. Again. No, the winner is Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime, Foreign, Defence, Immigration, Religious Affairs, Health Minister(s) and Lord of the Beasts of the Land and Fish of the Seas.

FEBRUARY:

Beresheet, the first Israeli moon mission lands. As its first act, it holds a moonyan with the locals, a group of Chabad yeshiva students who go around asking if people want to put on tefillin.

Israel’s election ends in a score-draw, with a replay every few months. Rakusens’ profits are anything but as flat, as its matzah sales go through the roof owing to a Brexit-induced flour shortage. Matzahs are the new flatbread and, despite a rise in imports from Israeli manufacturers, the hipsters of Shoreditch are seen fighting over boxes. Meanwhile, Meghan Markle gives birth to Menachem Moshe Wales. Or perhaps Rochel Leah Vales.

All the news that’s fit to predict / Special report JUNE:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu triggers a diplomatic firestorm after tweeting about Hamas and Gaza, shortly followed by another tweet saying: “Time to mow the lawn.” The phrase has previously been used by right-wing Israelis to refer to the periodic military bombardment of Gaza. A spokesman later says Netanyahu “really did mean that it was time to mow the lawn, Sara’s been kvetching for weeks about the grass being too long”.

JULY:

Israel replaces the UK in the EU. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker says: “If they take part in Eurovision, why not let them be EU members?” In a photoshoot with the other 27 member states, Benjamin Netanyahu says: “We’ve always liked Europe. Sure, we’ve had some blips, but what relationship hasn’t?” UK Ambassador to Israel David Quarrey tweets: “A dozen EU flags, all in good nick, 50 quid job lot, can’t say fairer than that.”

AUGUST:

Israel finds that the Hezbollah tunnels from Lebanon and the Hamas tunnels from Gaza have joined up somewhere under Ben Gurion Airport and there are branch tunnels to Tel Aviv, JeruEurovision winner Netta Barzilai

salem, Nahariya, Haifa and Be’er Sheva. “At least they have a decent train service,” says an irate Israeli commuter who has been waiting three hours for the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv express train. The Israeli Government contacts Hamas and Hezbollah engineers for help building the Tel Aviv underground.

SEPTEMBER:

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, it’s time for communal leaders to do a bit of soulsearching. The Board of Deputies’ Marie van der Zyl is seen rummaging for Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin recordings in Reckless Records in Berwick Street. Jonathan Goldstein of the Jewish Leadership Council is seen buying lemon sole in Sam Stollers.

NOVEMBER:

The Community Security Trust (CST) unveils a series of new crisis management training sessions aimed at engaging terrorists in conversation until back-up arrives. The ‘Keep Them Talking’ workshops covers modules such as ‘Is Your Terrorist Susceptible to Negotiation?’ and ‘Finding Your Dual Goal’. CST bosses say: “In those vital minutes when no escape is possible, it’s important not to stay quiet but to talk and engage with terrorists, first empathising, then killing their enthusiasm, before finally dampening

their spirits until such a time as they’re shot by snipers,” adding: “It’s fine, we should be good at it.”

places during the community’s annual Chanukah in the Square celebrations. With Chanukah and Christmas coinciding this year, Limmud Festival goes big on interfaith, with a concert by King’s College Cambridge choir giving rousing renditions of Maoz Tzur and I Have a Little Dreidl. Not to be outdone, the London Jewish Male Choir sings Oy Vey in a Manger and Hark, the Hendon Angels Sing. There are scuffles and protests owing to a world shortage of jacket potatoes. Israel gears up for another election with eight million parties taking part. What else is new?

Clarence House says a £1million kippah presented to Prince Charles for his 71st birthday will be added to the Crown Jewels collection at the Tower of London. The ostentatious gift, comprising Italian leather, saffron stitching and a Magen David made up of 2019 tiny white diamonds and 71 blue diamonds, is presented to the forever-heir by Russian and Ukrainian Jewish philanthropists based in London “in recognition of his Royal Highness’s dedication to the Jewish cause”. A spokesman for the prince says: “It really is very nice, thanks.”

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Two Jews, three political parties Imagine a week when Chuka Umunna formally splintered off from Labour, taking 20 MPs with him, and Jacob Rees-Mogg did the same to the Tories, calling his band of Brexiteer brothers ‘The New Right’. Now imagine this was the seventh of 19 levels of splintering expected before the final vote in April. Welcome to Israeli politics. Here’s the latest update: while the world was tucking into its turkey, the Zionist Union was disuniting when Labour leader Avi Gabbay said he could no longer work with Tzipi Livni and her Hatnuah Party because she looked at him funny. Just a day earlier, the two leading lights of the pro-settler Jewish Home Party said they were splitting to form their own new right-wing group because the rest of the party smelled. Yair Lapid is now widely rumoured to be considering a split after someone took the chair he liked. Whereas the UK has about 66 million people and only two takeseriously parties (and that’s being generous to Mr Corbyn), Israel’s nine million people have at least nine million parties to choose from, and more with every passing hour. Of course it does. Have you never heard the phrase: ‘two Jews, three political parties’?

A kvell of a start

There was the usual round of communal kvelling when the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list was announced, with many Jews recognised for contributions inside and beyond the community. Along with seven Holocaust survivors, several menches were honoured for tireless work in the charity and voluntary sectors, along with a one or two Jewish household names. Actress Sophie Okonedo, who’s starred in everything from Doctor Who and Hotel Rwanda to Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, got a richly deserved CBE for her decades-long service to drama. And magician and mentalist David Berglas was handed a long-overdue MBE for services to magic and psychology. As the 92-year-old amusingly told us this week: “I’ve spent over 60 years on radio and television reading people’s minds, but I didn’t see this coming!” A hearty mazeltov to all those picking up gongs at Buck House in the coming months.

IN PRAISE OF PALESTINIAN AMBITION The Palestinians are an inventive people. Not satisfied with trying to murder people on the land and in the air, they have frogmen who can sneak into Israel by sea to attack convenient targets near the coast in surprise terror raids. They are pioneers in attacking villages and towns via terror tunnels where trained killers can emerge to kill or capture civilians or soldiers and hold them for ransom, a practice now being exploited by their fellow terror merchants Hezbollah in Lebanon. New inventions in the past year include flaming kites and balloon bombs to burn and destroy the land they wrongly claim to be theirs. I have tried hard to find any valuable con-

CORBYN – AN EMPEROR WITH NO CLOTHES The recent resignation statement by the now former Labour MP Ivan Lewis declaring his inability to remain or feel welcome within the party fold will give pause for thought to many who must by now realise Jeremy Corbyn’s dislike of Israel is the reason for much of the antisemitism in his party. A Corbyn-led Labour government would be a

nightmare not only for UK Jews and Israel, but for all correct-thinking people. Corbyn’s outspoken views against the nation state of Israel are a disgrace. “By your deeds shall ye be known” – and by them Corbyn is totally upfront and dangerous. This emperor is naked and must be exposed at every opportunity.

‘You poor thing!’

Most of us will surely know the Jewish joke: if there are three Jews in a room, there will be five opinions. We argue, challenge and question everything – it is one of our traits that we don’t take things at face

Editorial comment and letters

Horror upon horror I trust I’m not the only one horrified to learn from this week’s newspapers that the Holocaust was even more terrible than we have so far been told, as if that’s possible. The essence of the reports is that the rate of killings has hitherto been underestimated. The Sun said the new evidence showed “the Nazis were slaughtering as many as 15,000 Jews a day at the height of World War Two” and “the genocide was so severe that more than a million Jews were killed in just three months in 1942”.

The Telegraph, which also reported the story, noted the murders stopped only “because there was no one left to kill”. It seems that however much we learn of the Shoah, there are still more horrors to come. Rarely has the injunction that we should never forget been brought home more forcibly. Full marks to Prof Stone at Tel Aviv University for the persistence of his research.

ORDINARY NAZI PEOPLE Jack Pepper states “the camps were Nazi and Nazi does not equal German” (Jewish News, 6 December). While not all Germans were Nazis, all Nazis were Germans or Austrians – your neighbour, my primary school teacher, the local butcher or civil servant. The Nazis were ordinary people who joined a political party, the same ordinary people who killed their neighbours in Nigeria, Rwanda, Kosovo, and so on.

Nazis arrive when the right economic conditions, mass unemployment and a charismatic rabble-rousing leader combine at the same time. Incidentally, Nazis and fascists are always identified as right wing. The word Nazi is short for Nazional Sozialistische Arbeiter Partei (NSDAP) – in other words, left wing.

RAAB IS NOT JEWISH

The Code of Jewish Law states that a child of a Jewish mother is Jewish, regardless of the father’s lineage. Your article “Is Raab poised to be the next in a short line of Jewish PMs?” (Jewish News, 20 December) is therefore incorrect, especially when through his non-Jewish mother’s influence he was brought up in the Church of England. Because of his father’s side of the family, he may well “embrace” his Jewish roots but Jewish he is not.

KINGSBURY MIKVEH SHUTS With deep regret, my committee and I have announced that our mikveh at Kingsbury, formerly the United Synagogue Mikveh, is now officially closed. Uncertainty over renewing the lease meant we felt morally and ethically unable to accept the donation offered by our admirers for complete modernisation. We are grateful for their confidence and belief in the institution of mikveh as a vital and necessary part of Jewish life. The opening of the mikveh more

than 40 years ago was due to the dream and vision of our beloved Lady Jakobovits with the encouragement of our then-Chief Rabbi, Lord Jakobovits and support by Rabbi and Rebbetzin Maurice Hool, Kingsbury honorary officer Werner Lash and Zalman Weiner, the architect. Thanks, too, to my band of dedicated committee ladies, past and present, without whom we would not have enjoyed so many fruitful years of our mikveh’s existence.

Story behind memorial This unique, unusual and sad tombstone is in Bushey Cemetery. No other like it is to be seen for grandeur. It contains none of the conventional Hebrew lettering giving name, date or memorial phrase. I wonder if any relatives of the Needle family – perhaps her siblings or others now maybe in their 80s – could shed any light on this strange and haunting memorial to a child taken away from her grieving family?

Homespun lesson in life by the ‘prophet of Israel’ JENNI FRAZER

O

f the many “me with” pictures and remembrances in the wake of the death of Israel’s acclaimed author Amos Oz, a few stand out for me. One is a shot of a young and happy Barbra Streisand with Oz, two beautiful people, full of life and determination. I don’t know when this photo was taken, but it is a joyous and cheering image. Another is a picture posted by Oz’s daughter, Fania, showing two hands. One hand is hers, closely gripping what she heartbreakingly tells us is her father’s “writing hand”, complete with surgical tube attached. To me, it looks like a hand determined to stay in the game. But the picture which most spoke to me was one of Oz with Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin. On the left (literally and metaphorically) is Oz, slight and compact, clasping hands with the bulky and benevolent

president. And you just know that the two of them, while politically opposed to each other — Oz was famously a stalwart of the peace camp, Rivlin emerged from the rightwing Likud party to become president — had so much in common. There were only a few months’ difference in age: Oz was born in May 1939 and Rivlin will be 80 in September this year. Both men were born in Jerusalem and were classmates at the Gymnasia Rehavia. Oz’s family, the Klausners, were hard-core right-wing revisionist Zionists, the politics which Oz specifically rejected when he ran away from home to join a kibbutz. As many tributes to Oz have made clear, Rivlin and he went back a long way, but the “prophet of Israel” was frequently summoned by presidents and prime ministers for late-night chats and consultations. Shimon Peres, himself a poet and essayist, often called Oz to help him to thrash out big problems facing the Jewish state. Oz never claimed to have found solutions

YOU CAN LET A FIRE BURN OR TAKE A GLASS OF WATER AND PUT IT OUT. IF YOU DON’T HAVE A GLASS, USE A SPOON

but instead often spoke in very homespun terms, as Rivlin recalled in his moving tribute to his friend. He wrote: “What will we do now, Amos, now that you are no longer? You said in one of our conversations that “the way to bring the dead back to life is to invite them to join us from time to time, to make them a cup of coffee, to remember a few things with them, to try and make up with them a little, and to send them back to the darkness to wait for us patiently.”

I was charmed by the idea of this invitation to the dead, this message to those who have gone before. I wanted to make Oz my own, metaphorical, cup of coffee, so I did what everyone else who has ever interviewed him did, and went back to what he told me. He said: “I love Israel even when I can’t stand it. I love it dearly at times of great drama… it’s not at its finest hour now.” He went on: “But it’s a bad habit of intellectuals, when they are confronted with an accident, not to ask what I can do to help, but instead to say who can I blame? “I do blame occasionally, but if you see a huge fire, there are several choices. You can run for your life, and let the fire burn. You can furiously place the blame on the guilty parties. Or you can take a glass of water and pour it on the fire. “If you don’t have enough for a glass, fill a teaspoon. Every human being has a teaspoon. You have to do what you can.” Get out your teaspoons.

Staying afloat in an ocean of innovation JULIETTE LIPSHAW

HEADTEACHER, SINAI PRIMARY SCHOOL

T

he future of technology in education is a pertinent topic and one that plays on my mind as a head teacher. The iPad was released in the UK only in April 2010, a perfect demonstration of the fast pace of technology and how quickly these devices become part of daily life. Our classrooms have interactive whiteboards instead of traditional blackboards and the children may be using Chromebooks or tablets – but plenty of writing books, pencils and worksheets are always in use. Research published earlier this month showed just over three quarters (76 percent) of children younger than five use digital electronic devices, according to the DfE survey of almost 6,000 parents. Education Secretary Damian Hinds said only recently technology is not always the “villain”, adding it can have a positive influence on children if they use gadgets to play educational games.

But he noted phones are too often an easy distraction with children choosing to access the “junk food” of the internet world – and the more time they spend glued to the latest games on their phones, the less likely they are to be getting outside for exercise. Making technology accessible to pupils and teachers is an ongoing challenge and achieving the right balance is key. At Sinai we have our own ICT suite, run a lunchtime coding club and have Google for education. We also set online homework using apps such as Mathletics, Bug Club and Spelling Shed, fostering digital literacy in lessons from across the curriculum. We have entered, and won, online tournaments such as VocabExpress for French and Hebrew and Times Table Rockstars for maths. While we are forward-thinking and innovative educators, we constantly evaluate the use of technology to ensure it does indeed support and benefit teaching and learning, the very values we hold dear. There is definitely a space for the two worlds to meet but nothing can replace holding a book, turning the pages and being transported into another world. We employ reading to create memorable learning

experiences, using a book as a starting point for our writing lessons and then building learning around it to bring the story to life. Every class from Nursery to Year 6 has a class book that is read regularly - Nursery and Reception enjoy this daily – and all children have reading books to take home. We are proud to be in the top three percent of the country for Phonics. We know improved Phonics learning leads to better reading and writing outcomes for children. We also know that stepping away from technology is better for children’s mental health. We regularly talk about digital health and how to stay safe online but our on-site school counsellor, Elizabeth Plaskow, creates open lines of communication to encourage good mental health. It is often hard for small children to

talk about their emotions and hide behind a screen but she offers drop-in sessions, available to all our children, and there are post boxes around school for the children to write down their worries. She responds to every message and the children feel she ‘makes their worries go away’. As the largest Jewish primary school in Europe, we are dedicated educators who fully embrace technology where it benefits education – but I am also a traditionalist who stands by the old-fashioned educational values. I will always champion excellence for the children to achieve the very best they can. I take pride in knowing Sinai is producing future digital leaders, but I also hope there are future mathematicians, authors and musicians in the making.

Strap in for a predictably unpredictable 12 months JAMES SORENE CHIEF EXECUTIVE, BICOM

I

s it possible to predict the future in Israel and the Middle East, the most unpredictable and unstable region in the world? Every year at BICOM we give it a go, pooling our expertise to publish a forecast of what will happen in the year to come. Last year we correctly predicted direct conflict between Iran and Israel in Syria, the Turkish invasion of northern Syria and the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. Here is what we believe will happen in the year ahead. The Israeli Government is no longer effective. The Israeli public isn’t happy with its handling of West Bank terror attacks and the ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza; this has undermined Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s image as ‘Mr Security’. But polls have consistently put his Likud party ahead and no opposition leader has emerged to change that. The entry into the race of popular ex-IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz,

a recommendation by the Attorney General to indict Netanyahu for bribery, or the publication of a US peace plan, could impair his ability to form a coalition and emerge as prime minister after the election on 9 April. Israel’s shadow war against Iran in Syria will enter a new phase. The Russian delivery of the S-300 anti-aircraft system to the Assad regime is a game-changer, but its impact depends on whether it is operated by Russians (restricting Israeli room for manoeuvre) or by Assad loyalists (in which case the systems could be destroyed). More worrying for Israel are developments in Lebanon, where Iran’s project to equip Hezbollah’s arsenal of 100,000 missiles with precision guidance systems is well underway. The dilemma whether to launch a preemptive strike against Hezbollah’s upgraded missiles or wait and face a much more dangerous Hezbollah is the most serious one of national security for Israeli leaders this year. Despite close security coordination between Israel and the Palestinian

Authority (PA), there is a significant threat of more violence and instability in the West Bank. The PA suffers from severe economic difficulties and Hamas has increased attempts to carry out terrorist attacks in the West Bank. The Palestinians are approaching a serious leadership succession crisis, when ageing PA President, Fatah leader and PLO chairman Mahmoud Abbas, departs. It’s a matter of when, rather than if, the crisis takes place. A new Palestinian leader will likely move towards a more extreme rejectionist platform to compensate for their legitimacy deficit. In Gaza, Egypt and Qatar will continue to try to calm the situation and promote an agreement between Israel and Hamas. But other parts of a deal, such as infrastructure projects, will almost certainly fall on the rock of failed Palestinian reconciliation, with Abbas rejecting Hamas’ insistence it maintains its military after a unity deal. This is the dilemma for international donors who want to help Gazans but will refuse to invest funds as long as Hamas controls Gaza.

Israel’s relations with Jordan will hit the rocks because King Abdullah wants to cancel the 25-year lease clause in the bilateral peace treaty allowing Israel to use two small areas in the Arava desert. Israel will propose significant water and energy projects to try to convince him to reconsider, but with strong domestic opposition, the king is unlikely to change his mind. On a more positive note, relations between Israel and Arab Gulf countries will warm up. Following Netanyahu’s visit to Oman, another prime ministerial visit to a Gulf Arab country is likely. Covert relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia will continue, although a public handshake between Netanyahu and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is improbable. More likely, the kingdom will allow Israel to use its airspace, cutting flying times and significantly boosting business between Israel and Asia. This may seem seem minor but, when measured against 70 years of antinormalisation within the Arab world, it’s the start of a new era.

How my hashtag inspired others fighting depression ELEANOR SEGALL

WRITER & MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGNER

O

n 17 December I was sitting at home, thinking about my depression. I have bipolar disorder, which is well controlled on medication; however, often in the winter I am prone to depression, owing partly to the lack of light. This means things start to feel hopeless and I have less energy. Symptoms of depression affect everyone differently. I had started feeling low and my job is not the most social, so I felt a little isolated. I’ve been active on Twitter for a while, posting about mental health, bipolar, anxiety and sharing my story with the world via Metro and other newspapers, to battle the stigma. I had a brainwave – why not start a hashtag that can help others share their own experiences of depression? There had to be lots of us out there, feeling the same way and needing to talk. Seeing as waiting list times for therapy

are growing longer and longer, I decided to see if others wanted to share what their depression means to them. So, the hashtag #MyDepressionMeans was born. I shared this message: ‘I’ve been struggling with depression lately but I know how supportive the twitter community is. Thought we could use the hashtag #MyDepressionMeans and share experiences to help everyone feel less alone. #MyDepressionMeans I get up later than normal and feel hopeless. Please Retweet’ To drum up support for the hashtag, I messaged my fellow mental health campaigners and charities to see if they would get behind it. Amazingly, charities Rethink Mental Illness, the Mental Health Foundation, the Shaw Mind Foundation and mental health publisher Trigger all got behind it and retweeted to their thousands of followers asking people to share their own experiences. People from all over the world began sharing their symptoms of depression and what it meant for them. I am amazed that

my tweet has been liked nearly 400 times and retweeted more than 150 times, with around 450 responses of people sharing about their mental health. It was important to me that when sharing this, it was done in a safe space. You can never predict if Twitter trolls will hijack the thread, but amazingly there was so much love, support and understanding. There was an outpouring of hundreds of people, most whom I had never met, sharing about their illness, some of whom had never done so before. What touched me the most was a video recorded by a woman who was sharing about her depression for the first time – and who was empowered to keep on sharing, owing to the phenomenal response. By creating the hashtag, I had something people could share. This is down to the incredible mental health community and unique online support network. Twitter gets lots of bad press about social media trolling but, for those of us with mental health issues, it can be a lifesaver because of the mutual support there.

I hope that, through sharing, not only can we battle stigma, but we can enhance each others’ lives. Here are some of the messages of people sharing with #MyDepressionMeans: ‘My Depression Means I lost sight and hold of everyone around me. I become blinded to the good and love they have for me. I withdraw so far they seem a light year away.’ ‘My Depression Means spending all day in bed alone. So grateful that my in laws don’t judge me and let me do what I need to do today.’ ‘My Depression Means seeing my wifes [sic] love and support, my kids still see me as Dad even when its [sic] bad, fighting off bad thoughts but still bipolar.’ ‘My Depression means I don’t always look after myself as well as I should – havnt been food shopping for over a month and left my meds run out [sic].’ • To share your experiences, follow Eleanor on Twitter at @EleanorSegall and type in the hashtag #MyDepressionMeans

Around 150 guests enjoyed Young Jewish Care Property Group’s Annual Round Table Dinner at CBRE. Industry leaders shared their expertise and experience with young property professionals while networking and raising over £23,000 for Jewish Care.

4 GENERATION GAME

Four generations of women enjoyed an afternoon with Ann Lewis, 88, who lives at Jewish Care’s Clore Manor home. Ann is mother of four, grandma to 11 and great-grandma to eight grand-children all under 3 years old. Her great-grandchildren include twins, Macy and Ruby now six months old. Granddaughter Lauren says, “It’s so lovely when we bring the children in. Everyone, not just Grandma, lights up and gets so much pleasure.”

5ALWAYS GIVING

GIFT, in partnership with the Jewish Volunteering Network and Tikkun’s Light Up a Life, saw almost 100 people in the GIFT warehouse on Christmas day to make a difference to others. Volunteers packed and delivered food for GIFT recipients, made decorations for care homes, and packed hundreds of hot chocolate gift cups for Barnet and Jami carers.

6 WOMEN’S RIGHTS

The Jewish Museum hosted a Jewish Women’s Aid where over £2,000 was raised for the charity. JWA Chief Executive Naomi Dickson said: “We have recently discovered the shocking statistic that Jewish women wait longer to get help than the national average. It is even more important that 70 people come together in support of JWA. The more people who talk about it, the more likely that women will reach out.”

The kosher culture that made us cheer in 2018! What a 12 months it was for Jews in pop culture. Of course, we say that almost every year but, truly, in 2018 Jewish celebs permeated the zeitgeist. Emily Burack culls through it all to offer her kosher culture highlights Barbra Streisand cloned her dog. In an interview with Variety, Streisand revealed she had cells taken from her beloved dog, Samantha, so she could clone her, and that two of her current dogs were clones of Samantha. The internet went appropriately wild, and Babs ended up writing a New York

1

Times op-ed defending her decision, ending with the iconic line, “You can clone the look of a dog, but you can’t clone the soul. Still, every time I look at their faces, I think of my Samantha… and smile.”

Israel. She also starred in Annihilation, a sci-fi film, and Vox Lux, a pop opera horror film. But this is about Jewish pop culture: Portman, born in Israel, received the Genesis Prize last year (think of it as the Nobel Prize, but for Jews), but refused to attend the ceremony. She clarified why: “Because I care about Israel, I must stand up against violence, corruption, inequality, and abuse of power.” We’re proud of her for showing you can have nuanced feelings about Israel.

Netflix’s hit prison drama, Orange is the New Black, got super Jewish in its latest season. There were batmitzvah flashbacks and an entire storyline about a black Jewish woman. We love the representation!

3

The Haim sisters dressed as the Sanderson sisters for Halloween. An iconic crossover: our favourite Jewish sisters dressed as our favourite witchy sisters (two of whom are played by Jews: Sarah Jessica Parker and Bette Midler).

4

Sarah Silverman received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and called out antisemitism while she was at it. “You know, in a scary time when antisemitic crime is up 57 percent since 2016, it’s not lost on me how lucky I am to be given a star and not have to sew it on my clothes,” Silverman said, referring to the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust. “I’m not sure if that’s gallows humour, or it’s funny ’cause it’s true humour.”

A Jewish mum, Jessica Mulroney, was at the centre of the Royal wedding. (Do you think I could write about pop culture in 2018 and not mention Meghan’s wedding to Harry?!) Jessica Mulroney – maiden name Jessica Brownstein – played a critical role at the wedding. Her twin sons held Markle’s veil as she entered the chapel, and her daughter was a bridesmaid.

6

Andy Cohen travelled to Israel for the first time. The Bravo host and TV personality was there to be the international ambassador for the Tel Aviv Gay Pride Parade. But that didn’t stop him from taking time to tour the country (and he turned off comments on his Instagram posts, because of the crazy comments celebs get when they visit Israel).

BlacKkKlansman, based on the true story of a black cop who goes undercover in the Ku Klux Klan, features a nuanced understanding of antisemitism and how it lays at the heart of white supremacy. It should be required viewing, especially in the wake of Charlottesville and Pittsburgh.

9

There was a moment last year (sometime mid-April) when the internet believed Brad Pitt was maybe dating an Israeli MIT professor named Dr Neri Oxman. We’ve since learned he wasn’t, but we got to learn about Ms Oxman – and, honestly, that was worth it.

10

Hidden in a list of her midterm election endorsements, comedian and actress Amy Schumer announced her pregnancy. Which was a great and politically savvy way to do it: news outlets couldn’t write about the announcement without writing about the candidates Schumer endorsed.

11

There’s a Jewish Disney princess now! Because Wreck-It Ralph lives in the Disney universe, comedian and actress Sarah Silverman believes the character she voices – Princess Vanellope – is the first Jewish Disney princess. We’ll take it!

12

It was also the year we got that Maroon 5’s music video Girls Like You, which featured many Jewish women. (Maroon 5 is led by Jewish frontman Adam Levine, obviously.) There was also gymnast Aly Raisman, wearing a shirt that said “Always Speak Your Truth”. Actresses Sarah Silverman, Gal Gadot, Tiffany Haddish and Beanie Feldstein also made star turns.

13

Disobedience, the Orthodox Jewish Disobedience lesbian romance film starring Rachels Weisz and McAdams, premiered last year. Based on Naomi Alderman’s novel of the same name, we loved it for its portrayal of queer Orthodox Jews. And Rachel Weisz – we adore Rachel Weisz (who was also amazing in The Favourite)!

14

And on the note of Jewish characters on television – albeit very different Jewish characters – Fauda season two was remarkable. As The New York Times wrote in its review of the season, Fauda creators “saw how certain circumstances in their world could be synthesised into entertaining, even gripping melodrama — the intimate web of shared history and culture; the normality of high emotion, hatred and nihilism; rigid notions of family and honour; the photogenic density of the weathered Palestinian cities in the West Bank, perfect for car and foot chases”.

Israel won Eurovision! The winning entry in the song competition was Toy by Israeli singer Netta Barzilai. She won a nailbiting vote, beating the Cyprus entry at the very last moment. This means this year’s Eurovision will be hosted in Tel Aviv in May. The UK, incidentally, ranked surprisingly high at 24th – a vast improvement considering we’ve toyed (pun intended) with nul points in recent years.

18

Everything Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Seriously. Everything. We adore Rachel Bloom, and how the show’s Jewish humour helps subvert Jewish stereotypes. The music is amazing. It’s all so good. And as it airs its fourth and final season, we are so appreciative that this show exists.

19

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (pictured left) is arguably the most Jewish show on TV, and season two did not disappoint (although, sadly, Zachary Levi – who plays a very handsome Jewish doctor – is not himself a Jew.) There were major Jewish moments: from a plot line about Tisha B’av, the fast that is little-known outside of the Jewish world, to an episode centred on Yom Kippur, to a joke about the Mi Sheberach prayer. It was all very Jewish.

Kylie Jenner (pictured, below) made matzah ball soup and documented it all on her Instagram stories. It was a journey. Ariana Grande’s tribute to Mac Miller in Thank U, Next made everyone cry. Ariana’s self-love bop will be remembered long past 2018, but we particularly love her tribute to Mac Miller, the Jewish rapper who passed away from a drug overdose in September. Arcs and ye shall receive

A

s a mother of two boys addicted to the computer game Fortnite, I asked my husband what he thought life would be like without PlayStation. His reply? “Remember the week we spent skiing in the Alps, when there was no phone signal? And we actually had to talk to one another? And we played board games and told each other jokes? Well it would be like that...” Spring is an amazing time to ski the Alps. The weather is often better than at February halfterm, so you can leave the thermals in the chalet and get the suntan lotion out instead. At the bar terraces up the mountain, deckchairs are like gold dust and skiers are making that all-important decision: Another run before lunch to practise those parallel turns, or top up the tan with an ice-cold beer? Les Arcs has more than 200km of pistes, most above 2,000 metres, so you’re practically guaranteed great late-season snow. The slopes are varied, with plenty to suit all standards from

beginner to expert. There are some seriously steep black runs (I still don’t understand why my children take such great pleasure in seeing me fall over!), but plenty of easy cruising too, which is much more my style, and the ski area is linked to neighbouring La Plagne, which forms the huge Paradiski area and is well worth a visit. The original Arc resort village is 1,600 metres high and one of the French traffic-free, purposebuilt resorts built in the 1960s and 1970s. It’s not the prettiest place I’ve visited, but more aesthetic low-rise chalet styles, including Arc 1950, were built in the early 2000s and the two are connected by a short gondola that runs until late at night. It’s a very pleasant place to stroll around and grab a hot chocolate. The Les Arcs ski area is served by a well-oiled lift system with lots of fast chairs. The link to La Plagne is via the two-way double-deck Vanoise Express cable car from Plan Peisey, high above the intervening valley and with fantastic views. The joint Paradiski area has a total of 425km of pistes, so well up there with some of the biggest ski areas in the world. Your choice of where to stay in Les Arcs is varied, because of the resort’s set-up. This time, we broke with tradition and tried the chalet experience despite threats from the children that they wouldn’t eat with strangers. A ski chalet holiday is a fantastic choice for anyone who enjoys a social skiing experience. The fact I could walk to the Friday-night dinner table in my tracksuit and slippers and barely a smudge of make-up was a dream. Sadly, some of the friends with whom we were due to travel pulled out a few weeks before, which meant we had no idea who our flatmates would be. We were lucky. A Scottish family laden with board games and two school teachers with plenty of tips on child discipline provided the perfect recipe for a successful week. But you do have to be careful. If you want the Top: A stunning view of the French Alps. Insets Charlotte and family at their resort in Les Arcs

Charlotte Seligman heads to Les Arcs in the French Alps for a ski break, sans the aggro of modern tech

chalet experience but don’t have enough people to fill a whole one by yourselves, give some thought to the fact you may be sharing a close space with people who want a very different ski experience from you. Some of the rooms tend to be pretty basic too, so if it’s luxury you’re after you’ll have to pay extra pennies to get it. Having said that, chalets provide the perfect setting from which to enjoy the snowy mountains and rest those tired limbs after a hard day on the slopes. The crackling log fire and freshlybaked cakes waiting on the table also help of course – as does the nightly glass of prosecco and endless bottles of red wine. I do wonder why I always sleep so well in the Alps. The specialist tour operator Inghams offers a wide choice of chalets which include large lodgings for 30 as well as more intimate accommodation for eight guests. Each chalet has a dedicated host or hosts – in our case, two young men on their gap year. I’m under no illusions that their main objective was to get in as much skiing in as possible (their red noses gave it away), but they had certainly paid attention during their cookery lessons. Three courses every night, a ton of vegetables and a mound of French bread meant we often rolled into bed. All dietary requirements are catered for too, with a vegetarian option offered each day. Apres-ski in Les Arcs is fairly quiet. Arc 1800 is the liveliest place to be, with a couple of night clubs, and there are some cosy bars in Arc 1950. For drinks on the mountain, there’s a fun ice bar and ice grotto with sculptures in the igloo village above Arc 2000. However, the best entertainment we found

by far was watching those mad enough to test their skills (and nerve) by skiing downhill to a pool and then surfing across it. The pool is located just above Arc 1800 in the Arpette area and is a real crowd pleaser, as long as you’re not the one being laughed at! The freestyle park is worth a visit too. With all sorts of graded jumps to choose from, it attracts children young and old as well as their parents. The parents sit on a big cushion at the bottom of the park, waiting for their children to appear safe and sound. From apres-ski to shpilkes, all in one day!

CHARLOTTE’S TRAVEL TIPS Charlotte and her family were guests of Inghams. A seven-night holiday on a catered basis (including buffet breakfasts, afternoon tea and cake, and evening meals with complimentary wine for five nights) costs from £989 per person, based on two adults and two children, departing on 30 March 2019. Price includes return flights and airport transfers. To book, visit inghams.co.uk/ski-holidays or call 01483 791 114.

Tricolour minestrone

With

Denise Phillips

PREPARATION TIME 10 MINS

Serves 6

In Italy, minestrone usually means a vegetable soup although it might contain chicken or meat broths, so always check! Vegetables vary according to recipes and regions. Often pasta, beans and rice are added as well. Minestrone is sometimes served with pesto stirred in, or with Parmesan grated on top like this one. I have chosen vegetables that are green, red and white, giving a bright-coloured appearance and texture that make the most of their freshness.

Torah For Today

What does it say about... Asbestos in baby powder? BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL

BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS This week we read of the first seven plagues on the Egyptians. Many have wondered whether this story is fair. After all, the plagues only happened because Pharaoh was stubborn. God tells Moses that he would harden Pharaoh’s heart in this matter, and that is hardly fair on the rest of Egypt. It seems cruel. Maimonides suggests that this hardening of Pharaoh’s heart is not cruel but designed to help the Egyptian king come to his own decision out of free will. If Pharaoh is a normal human being, how could he stand in the face of the ten terrible plagues? God therefore gives him strength to be able to withstand the immense pressure.Rabbi Simon ben Lakish says in Exodus Rabbah: “Since God sent [the opportunity for repentance and doing the right thing] five times to him and he sent no notice, God then said, ‘You have stiffened your neck and hardened your heart on your own…. So it was that the heart of Pharaoh did not receive the words of God.’” This seems to fulfil the biblical words “I shall harden Pharoah’s heart.” The Torah uses the past tense and the vav conversive makes it into a future tense. What the midrash seems to imply is that at his birth God have Pharaoh free will. The Egyptian people suffer as all peoples suffer, from a poor leader and his poor choices.  Rabbi Zvi Solomons serves JCoB.org, the Jewish Community of Berkshire in Reading

Documents released under disclosure in a recent lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson, the leading baby products brand, revealed the presence of a cancer-causing asbestos-like formaldehyde-producing ingredient. What does the Torah say about this? The Torah declares that “you shall be exceedingly careful with your lives”. This command is taken to be independent of its context, which is that we heard only a voice at Sinai and so should keep pure our theological beliefs. Our bodies should also be kept as healthily as we can. In past generations, carcinogenic materials such as the many poisons to be found in cigarettes were regarded by some Jews as less of a health risk if one made themselves ignorant to them.

Such people cited the verse in the Psalms “God protects the simple”. However, this approach has been thoroughly discredited, and the terrible pain and suffering endured due to cigarette smoking leaves no room to claim spiritual asylum. An offence against the body is an offence against God. Therefore, if it is shown to be true that public health has been compromised by a firm knowingly including an ingredient harmful to consumers, the moral blame and financial liability is shared

THE TERRIBLE PAIN AND SUFFERING ENDURED DUE TO SMOKING LEAVES NO ROOM TO CLAIM SPIRITUAL ASYLUM

by those who authorised its use and by those who failed to report this to regulatory authorities. In recent times, the nowdeceased former Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef changed his mind over smoking. At first, he published halacha regarding whether it was permitted to smoke at the kotel or on Tisha b’Av. Later, he issued a prohibition against yeshiva students taking up the habit. Whereas it could be argued that each puff, or cloud of baby powder on its own might not kill, if the collective result is fatal then any habit-forming use of a substance containing fatal ingredients is forbidden.  Rabbi Ariel Abel is padre to HM Armed Forces and serves the Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation

EYFS / Key Stage 1 Limudei Kodesh Teacher MPS/UPS Required for September 2018

Yavneh Primary School, on the site of Yavneh College is a two-form entry school which opened in September 2016 with our first Reception cohort. We are seeking a highly motivated, exceptional, talented Key Stage 1 teacher who wants to make a substantive, positive impact in our brand new school.

Over the last three years, six of us have joined Altermans as consultants – to work in property, company commercial, litigation, employment, private client and family law. All of us have been partners elsewhere, and know the pain of running a team, hitting chargeable targets and driving revenue. However, each of us knew deep down that what we wanted to do was find somewhere where we could work for our clients in a friendly and supportive environment. We found it at Altermans in Finchley, North London.

This is a unique opportunity for an individual who is creative and has the skills and drive to start something from scratch and really make their mark.

The firm is run by Gabriel Alterman, who is growing a business where lawyers can work on their own or build a small team that meets their needs. The firm is not a “virtual network”. We work together, talk together and respect each other’s expertise. We share fees, reward each other for referrals, and have regular gatherings – both social and work – to make sure we’re on track.

To request an information pack contact: admin@yavnehprimary.org or 020 8736 5580 Visits to the school are welcomed and encouraged.

If this sounds like a firm where you could find a niche and be at home, get in touch to arrange a chat and come and meet us. There’s no management-speak; just lawyers working together.

Closing date for applications: Friday 2nd March 2017

You can contact Gabriel directly at gabriel@altermans.co.uk or by phone on 07794 085 617. Our website is at www.altermans.co.uk for more details of the firm.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

The Bible Says What? ‘Invest in property in times of crisis’ BY RABBI MARK GOLDSMITH The prophet Jeremiah makes a very odd decision at the point when the Babylonians are besieging his country of Judah, at the gates of Jerusalem, poised to take the Jews into exile. He invests in buying land. In Jeremiah Chapter 32, while he is imprisoned in Jerusalem by King Zedekiah in an attempt to silence him, Jeremiah arranges to buy a field from his uncle in the nearby town of Anatot. The account, upon which the Talmudic law of property purchase is based (Kiddushin 26a), has Jeremiah paying a fair purchase price, writing a conveyance and having it signed and delivered in front of witnesses. Why does Jeremiah do this at a point of disaster for the Jewish people when the land will presumably become inaccessible and worthless? Jeremiah explains that he has God-given confidence that, even when Judah seems doomed, the Jews will one day return and

will once again buy houses and fields and vineyards. It means that, to him, the field that he now owns has value as an expression of trust in the future. As we begin 2019, Britain is embarking on a new and tough period in the nation’s life. We are challenged to decide whether to express confidence in the long-term future, continuing to invest in this country, financially and emotionally, or whether to hold everything back, afraid of uncertain times to come. Jeremiah’s action, continuing to invest in Judah whatever the circumstances, is a guide for those who believe in the values of this country, that whatever happens this year we will have the resourcefulness to build a good future. Jewish life in Britain is good, there is every chance that it will remain so, and that is worth investing in.  Rabbi Mark Goldsmith serves

Progressively Speaking It’s our obligation to tackle homelessness BY RABBI AARON GOLDSTEIN In 2018 we allowed social injustice to become as ubiquitous as Brexit. One such case is that of homelessness. Over the past year we have all seen, with our own eyes, the dramatic rise in people sleeping on the streets or under makeshift tents. On Christmas Day, I volunteered at New Hope’s Winter Night Shelter – which is operated in partnership with St Mary’s Church and Watford Borough Council. I will be there again this month. Other members of my shul are volunteering at projects in London and Hertfordshire, while our cheder has provided donations of porridge pots, cup-a-soups and hot drinks. The individual stories we have heard are varied and it is humbling to think that we are all but a few crises from needing such support. I am desperate that those with whom I engaged do not become a 2019 statistic, such as the one recently reported by the Office for

Free shirt and tie on purchase over £75 on production of this advert during January

National Statistics that 597 rough sleepers died in 2018. Crisis suggested there were more than 24,000 people in Britain who would be sleeping rough or in cars, trains, buses or tents over Christmas. While gratified by our personal involvement in social action to aid the homeless, we should not ignore social justice work on this issue. Tzelem: The Rabbinic Call for Social and Economic Justice in the UK will be an important voice. A truly cross-communal organisation, it was founded on the Jewish principle that we are all created b’tzelem Elokim – in the image of God – and seeks to

take action to tackle the problems at the root of our society, our economy and our treatment of the vulnerable. In our own Liberal Judaism, Rabbi Dr Margaret Jacobi justifiably gave colleagues at our recent clergy Kallah (retreat) a verbal rocket to be a leading voice in calling out social injustice, just as our ancient prophets were. In Birkat HaMazon (Grace after Meals), we read: “We have eaten and been satisfied. Help us to be responsive to the needs of others and to listen to their cry for food. Open our eyes and our hearts, so that we may share Your gifts and help to remove hunger and want from the world.” Over this winter, and throughout 2019, may we continue our valuable and meaningful social action work; and raise our voices to affect long-term change in our society.  Rabbi Aaron Goldstein is senior rabbi at Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue

LONDON • WATFORD

Our trusty team of advisers answer your questions about everything from law and finance to dating and dentistry. This week: The ins and outs of tax returns, the end of ISDN and servicing a mechanical watch

ADAM SHELLEY ACCOUNTANT

SOBELL RHODES Dear Adam I’m an employee of a management consultancy company and have earned more than £100,000 during this tax year. I’m concerned I may not have paid enough tax. Is this possible? I also make charitable donations during the year and gather there may be tax relief for this. Dahlia Dear Dahlia Your personal allowance goes down by £1 for every £2 that your adjusted net income is above £100,000. This means your allowance is zero if your income is £123,700 or above. You will also need to prepare a self-assessment tax return. Under the current rates and allowances, how much income tax you pay in each tax year depends on two things.

MAXI ROSE TELECOMS SPECIALIST

RCUK Dear Maxi I don’t know the ins-andouts of telecoms, but I know my business runs its phones through an ISDN line, as I think most businesses do. BT has said it is shutting down ISDN. Does this mean that phone calls will just stop one day? And what do I need to do to keep my business going? Abbi

Dear Abbi First of all, don’t worry! It is true many businesses are having to change their communication systems, but you have some time left before ISDN is obsolete. If you can team up with some friendly experts, then your next steps will be a breeze. The answer is internetbased phones (also called VoIP), and I am helping many businesses to make the move away from ISDN successfully right now. Although ISDN has performed well for years, it is now lacking in comparison to new technologies. In short, if you want your business to thrive you can be glad ISDN is going. Leaving ISDN isn’t just a

They are how much of your income is above your personal allowance and how much of your income falls within each tax band. The current tax year is from 6 April 2018 to 5 April 2019 and the standard personal allowance is £11,850, the amount of income on which you do not have to pay tax The key points to take into consideration are your personal allowance and tax code, how much tax you have paid in the current tax year and how much you are likely to pay for the rest of the year. If you make charitable donations through gift aid, you can claim the difference between the rate you pay and the basic rate on your donations. If you choose to make pension contributions before the end of the tax year, you may be able to claim tax relief on them if you pay tax at a rate above 20% and if your pension provider claims the first 20% for you (this is known as relief at source). You can claim tax relief on your personal tax return for 20 percent if you pay income tax at 40 percent. Depending on the level of the contributions, your taxable income may fall below £100,000, which means you would retain your allowance. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further advice.

necessity. You will enjoy ease of scalability, traditional calls not limited to a desk phone, the ability to see which of your team is on the phone and to whom and much more. Potentially you could be saving money too. Making the switch to internet-based phones is easier that you might think – just ask one of the companies that have already completed a successful, painless migration with RCUK. If each step of your move is planned carefully, you will avoid disruption in your day-to-day operations. For more information and advice, contact us at telecoms@rcuk.com or call our dedicated team on 020 8815 4115.

NICOLAS KALMUS HOROLOGIST

NICOLAS WATCH CO. DearNicolas Why do I need to service my mechanical watch? Simon Dear Simon You probably paid a lot of money for your modern mechanical watch. The price should reflect the skill and workmanship required to build the movement. These movements use special oils

for friction-free operation and timekeeping and usually operate 24/7, with the heart of the watch, the ‘balance’, oscillating 28,800 times an hour. That’s a lot of work! Over time, the fine oils facilitating the oscillation will begin to thicken or evaporate. Not only does this mean movement parts will grate against each other but old oil will attract dust, creating a grime which can be abrasive and very damaging. Worse, if the watch is working with no oils in place, parts will wear down and eventually break, costing much more than a routine service to repair. If you have a vintage watch, it will lack the shock absorbers and seals to protect it from the outside elements,

so servicing is essential. This is especially true if the watch is of historic significance, an investment piece or holds sentimental value. Additionally, if your watch is waterproof or intended for diving and you plan to wear it while swimming, the seals which protect the watch when immersed also deteriorate over time and should be changed at intervals. You probably wouldn’t drive your car without a service. Watches should be considered in the same way and maintained periodically. This will also help to retain the piece’s value. Nicolas Watch Co. can undertake all types of watch maintenance, repair and restoration.

From your very first breath to your last moments on earth, we will be with you. ❚ A beautiful baby is born. She is deaf. Who will make sure she gets the right start in life and flourishes? ❚ A teenage girl is in crisis. Who will enable her to cope as the only deaf child in the school? ❚ A young deaf man has been evicted from his flat. Who will get him off the streets? ❚ A deaf couple are scam victims. Who will stop them giving away their life savings? ❚ A deaf woman has dementia. Who will help her cope with everyday life? ❚ An older gentleman spends every day alone, shrouded in depression. Who will visit him, fix his hearing aids, ease his loneliness? ❚ A deafblind woman has cancer. Who will support her every step of the way and hold her hand as she reaches the end of her life?

The Jewish Deaf Association is a lifeline to vulnerable deaf people who have nowhere else to turn — people at all stages of life, within the Jewish community and beyond. Please donate as generously as you can, and remember JDA in your Will.

Together, let’s ensure that every deaf person gets the very best out of life.
