Most Jewish school pupils now Charedi Report reveals 58% of 34,547 students are strictly-Orthodox

Almost six in 10 Jewish children currently studying at Jewish schools in the UK are strictly-Orthodox, a report published today reveals – with researchers saying the true figure is likely to be far higher, writes Adam Decker. The findings flow from the latest data gathered by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR). Commissioned by the Board of Deputies, the statistical bulletin by JPR director Dr Jonathan Boyd showed there are 34,547 Jewish children at Jewish schools, with 58 percent attending Charedi schools. Less than 15 years ago, there was a 50:50 split. Addressing the near 60:40 split, Boyd said: “The disparity is even greater than this, as a significant number of Charedi teenagers are known to be studying in yeshivot that are not included in Department for Education figures.” He said enrolment in strictly-Orthodox schools had increased “dramatically” with 12,000 more Charedi children studying in Jewish schools today than were in the mid-1990s – a 166 percent increase over a generation. JPR’s statistical bulletin also looked at growth rates from as recently as 2014-15 and found 3,633 more children in Jewish schools in 2017-18 than three years earlier, an

11.8 percent increase. Boyd said this equated to annual growth rates of roughly 4.3 percent for the strictly-Orthodox and 3.1 percent in the mainstream sector. Meanwhile, 85 percent of Jewish children studying in Jewish schools now do so in or near London, compared to 70 percent in the mid-1990s, meaning “the London/regional balance is clearly shifting over time in favour of London”. However, more than one in four Charedi children study at Jewish schools in Manchester, compared to fewer than one in five studying there in the mid-1990s, indicating a slow shift northward for the strictly Orthodox. Outrage over Labour motion bashing Israel A Labour MP has criticised her own local party members for adopting a motion alleging that Israel aids a campaign to label criticism of it as antisemitic. Vicky Foxcroft, MP for Lewisham Deptford, made the comments on Twitter after her Constituency Labour Party (CLP) debated the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism on 10 January. The motion passed, but the CLP said it did not win enough support to be taken further, to a Londonwide conference of local councils. It nevertheless stoked anger among British Jews weary of the party’s record on antisemitism. In particular, social media users reacted furiously to the motion’s allegation that “the Israeli Government resources an international campaign to conflate criticism of itself with antisemitism”.

Foxcroft said: “Lewisham Deptford members recently discussed concerns about the application of the IHRA definition of antisemitism in local government. “I do not share these concerns and believe that this debate ought to have been ended decisively when our NEC [national executive committee] backed the IHRA definition in full.” She told Jewish News: “I was present at the meeting last Thursday, however as I wasn’t a delegate I didn’t have a vote on this motion or any others. However, had I had a vote, I would have voted against the motion. “I fully support the NEC’s decision to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism and disagree with point E, that the ‘Israeli Government resources an international campaign

to conflate criticism of itself with antisemitism”. The party’s ruling body finally adopted the full IHRA working

definition in September, after a summer stand-off with Jewish community leaders, and is now believed to be working on additional guidance for those investigating antisemitism allegations. However, the Lewisham Deptford motion alleged that the definition “has already been cited in attempts to sack workers for expressing views about Palestine, to ban pro-Palestinian groups from using council premises and to curb student activism”. It calls for London councils to oppose the adoption of the IHRA definition “without caveats explicitly protecting activists engaged in the struggle for equal rights in Israel/ Palestine” and to resist pressure to do so. The Lewisham Deptford CLP has been approached for comment.

STUDENTS PLAN EVENTS FOR HMD Students across the UK and Ireland are to hold more than 30 events to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) this year. Campuses ranging from Dublin to Exeter and East Anglia to Southampton will hold educational sessions to mark the international day of remembrance, held on 27 January. Events include hearing from the grandson of an SS officer and the daughter of a renowned survivor, and are being supported by the Union of Jewish Students, which works with the Holocaust Educational Trust to bring speakers to universities.

ISRAELI AIR FORCE TO JOIN RAF Israeli fighter jets and aircrew are to take part in thier first joint exercise with the RAF, in the skies above RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire. Israel’s Top Guns will take part in the Cobra Warrior exercise in September, with their counterparts from Germany and Italy. The Israeli Air Force holds its own biannual international exercise, Blue Flag, with the RAF due to take part in the next one in 2020. While RAF aircraft have overflown Israel on their return from sorties in Iraq and Syria, it will be the first time they train in Israeli airspace.

Chelsea Football Club’s top players have joined a global Jewish initiative to raise awareness around the world about the Holocaust and the dangers of antisemitism and xenophobia. The latest move by the club’s Jewish owner, Roman Abramovich to highlight a scourge still seen among supporters, among those taking part are its manager, captain and three star players. Jewish News has teamed up with Chelsea to hold a fundraising dinner featuring untold stories of survival from the Shoah.

BAN ON ISRAELI SWIMMERS Israel’s supporters in the UK have called on the Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK to let disabled Israeli swimmers take part in a tournament in the city of Kuching this summer. More than 1,600 people had signed an online petition by Tuesday afternoon urging the country to reverse its decision to deny entry to Israeli athletes for the World Para Swimming Championships due to be held at the end of July. The tournament is a qualifying event for the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 but, although

swimmers from 70 countries are set to take part, Israelis have been denied entry for political and diplomatic reasons. Supporters signing a petition set up by We Believe in Israel told High Commissioner

Dato’ Ahmad Rasidi Bin Hazizi it was “blatant discrimination against citizens of the world’s only Jewish state” and contrary to the fundamental principles of Olympism, whereby sport is deemed a human right, regardless of race or religion and called on Malaysia to reconsider this “totally inappropriate decision”. The British Paralympic Association said: “We hope the situation is resolved so eligible athletes will be able to compete at the event later this summer.” •Editorial comment, p22

A new law compelling the US Government to respond to genocide and atrocities around the world has been named after Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. Signed into law by US President Donald Trump on Monday, the Elie Wiesel Genocide and Atrocities Prevention Act requires the State Department to establish a mass atrocities taskforce to help prevent and respond to such crimes. It also establishes a “complex crises” fund for international events, including genocide and mandates the Government to

train US foreign service personnel on how to detect the early signs of atrocities. The bill was signed into law despite Trump’s administration promising to withdraw US forces from conflict zones such as Syria, where Islamic State militias are widely believed to have perpetrated genocide against the Yazidi minority. The bill had bipartisan support, with lawmakers arguing atrocities and genocide are “a core national security interest and a moral responsibility”. World Jewish Congress Pres-

ident Ronald S. Lauder welcomed the US Government’s decision to take “an important leading step,” adding: “There is no more appropriate person to name this law after than Elie Wiesel.... We cannot sit by in silence amid the growing threats of terror, racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism.” Wiesel survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald to become a US professor and author who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 in recognition of his campaigning for victims of persecution around the world.

Online survey / Dismore done / Board rejection / News

170,000 Jew hate Google searches One-in-10 of more than 170,000 antisemitic Google searches made in Britain every year include violent phrases such as “kill Jews”, the Community Security Trust (CST) has revealed. In its new study – Hidden Hate: What Google Searches Tell Us About Antisemitism Today – the CST states that while most of the searches are for jokes mocking Jewish people, the most common negative stereotypes claim Jews are “evil” and “racist”. There was also a rise of almost 80 percent in antisemitic searches in April, after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn held talks with Jewish communal leaders. The findings cover a 14-year period starting in 2004 and are based on analysis of Google data, as well as material from the archive of Stormfront, one of the oldest and largest neo-Nazi websites. The study, commissioned jointly by the CST and the Antisemitism Policy Trust, set out the

most common abusive searches, where they are most popular and at what time of the day, and how trends have changed over time. As well as 17,000 of the searches having violent connotations, the report also found they tended to spike between 2am and 3am, and that Wales had the highest proportion of searches with the lowest in Scotland. The research also found that someone searching for jokes about Jews is 100 times more likely to search for jokes about black people, using the N-word, and that there was little difference between Labour and Conservative-voting areas. It also pointed to an enduring fascination with conspiracy theories about the Rothschild banking family in “running the world”. The report acknowledged “it is impossible to know for sure that any given search is made by a person with antisemitic attitudes”. However, it

said people tended to be far more open when they search for something online, revealing prejudices they might otherwise have kept hidden. Report author Seth Stephens-Davidowitz said: “We have found searches looking for information

on the Holocaust being a hoax rise about 30 percent every year on Holocaust Memorial Day. “We learned Jewish women in public life or positions of power are the subject of more antisemitism searches than Jewish men in similar positions. We found evidence of the rise in popularity of antisemitic conspiracy theories and found that sometimes heightened media focus on Jews or Israel, even if positive, can lead to an increase in online searches for antisemitic content.” CST head of policy Dr Dave Rich said: “Search engines and internet companies have a responsibility to ensure people asking these questions are directed away from hateful content and towards material that might challenge their prejudices.”

The Board of Deputies has reacted angrily to media claims it backed a definition of Islamophobia devised by a parliamentary group and influenced by Muslim advocacy group Mend. In a letter to deputies, it described the report as “a mixture of innuendo, half-truths, and outright falsehoods”. It said “in line with other communal bodies, including the Jewish Leadership Council and the Community Security Trust, we discussed various options including supporting a defini-

tion, or continuing to monitor developments around this issue”. It added: “We haven’t yet given our support to any definition. We are aware there are a number of definitions under discussion in the Muslim community, including the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Muslims, and felt it wasn’t the right time for us to endorse any of them.” It said junior Board staff only had an introductory meeting with the APPG on British Muslims.

MUTUAL SUPPORT LESSON FROM JEWISH SCHOOLS Lord Polak this week urged the government to learn from Jewish free schools’ mutual support network and understand that schools can be deemed both special needs and faith-based. The Jewish peer, an honorary president of Conservative Friends of Israel and chair of trustees at the newly-created Lubavitch MultiAcademy Trust, cited Jewish schools as an example during a debate on free schools. “One extremely positive initiative has been where free schools have joined together and created a network to give each other mutual support, and expanded into developmental school improvement and continued professional development for staff,” he said. to their students and educational ethos. “A one-size-fits-all approach cannot work within a school and certainly not for the body inspecting schools.” PaJes noted that the consultation included some “very positive initiatives, including the creation of new categories for personal development and behaviour and attitudes”. It added: “This will be helpful in enabling schools to meet the requirements of teaching relationship and sex education, which should now be more clearly defined.” However, it added, it was important schools do not feel stifled by these guidelines. “The Department for Education should be encouraging schools to explore innovative curriculum models that can better meet the needs of children. Kisharon is building an state-of-the-art campus, increasing its capacity from 40 students to 72, and Polak said arrangements between the Department for Education and the charity had “driven up educational standards and improved the facilities for learning disabilities”. He added: “Becoming a free school has facilitated the opportunity to create specific expert learning zones for children with autism and other learning difficulties and disabilities. “As things stand, a special school cannot be a special and faith school… The experience of Kisharon rather proves that this is not only possible but desirable.”

Why select a Jewish school for your child? Yet the question of how effective British Jewish schools are in terms of cultivating robust Jewish identities in their pupils remains somewhat moot. Research indicates that Jewish schools are highly effective in terms of helping Jewish children to make Jewish friends and build Jewish social lives – both essential components of Jewishness. But the jury is still out on the extent to which they cultivate stronger Jewish identities in terms of increased religious observance or active community engagement. While children in Jewish schools score higher than those in non-Jewish schools in these respects, that is largely because they come from families with stronger Jewish identities to start with. So it tends to be the home rather than the school that drives these behaviours, alongside other core Jewish experiences, particularly gap year programmes in Israel. The likelihood is that we will continue to see Jewish school numbers rise. Whether the strength of young people’s Jewish identities rises in tandem remains to be seen.

BY JONATHAN BOYD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JPR

The numbers of children in Jewish schools in the UK continue to rise, as they have done for decades. Part of the reason for that is simply the demographic growth of the Charedi community – high birth rates there mean more children, more children mean a need for more school places, and in the Charedi context, that inevitably means more Jewish school places. But the rise isn’t only happening in the Charedi sector. It is happening across the community. More Jewish children of all types are going to Jewish schools of all types. Jewish parents are choosing Jewish schools for four main reasons: because the schools often get decent academic results; because many are state schools and therefore low cost; they want their children to have Jewish friends; and they want their children to have strong Jewish identities.

THE RISE ISN’T JUST TAKING PLACE IN THE CHAREDI SECTOR

Essex mosque opens doors to Shoah exhibit An Essex mosque will host a Yad Vashemsupported exhibition on Muslim heroes of the Holocaust after its cancellation by the Centre for Islamic Understanding in Golders Green. The Love Your Neighbour exhibit will take place this Sunday in Redbridge, although details of the venue and organisers are being kept under wraps for fear of a repeat of the campaign that led to the Golders Green hub abandoning its event. Faith Matters director Fiyaz Mughal, who is supporting the event, said: “Thankfully, the exhibition on Muslims who saved Jews is being held in Redbridge. There is some fantastic work being done in the borough to bring together communities. “After calls for the boycott of the prestigious Yad Vashem which honours the memory of six million murdered Jews, this is a great way to say to those who seek to divide communities with boycotts of Holocaust centres that they will not win”. News / Poverty scheme / Memorial support / BDS ignored

Looking outwards to Rabbis back memorial help the world poor A Cambridge student who volunteered in Ghana as part of the Chief Rabbi’s Ben Azzai programme is leading the introduction of Social Responsibility Week (SRW) in Britain’s Jewish community, despite “resistance” from some quarters. George Rosenfeld, 19, is heading a team of participants in Africa and India trips who felt they could help the Jewish community to turn “outwards” to help some of the world’s poorest people. Rosenfeld said the group felt there was an opportunity to design educational resources such as lesson or assembly plans for schools to explain the kind of poverty

A cross-denominational group of rabbis representing synagogues in central London has written to Westminster City Council to push the case for a Holocaust memorial and learning centre next to Parliament. The letter was sent yesterday, at the start of a three-week consultation on the planning application for a new £100 million memorial and learning centre at Victoria Tower Gardens, which is supported by the Government. However residents have been left angered by the plans, arguing that the park is in Westminster’s own ‘monument saturation zone’ – and sits in

a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Representing nine synagogues in Westminster City Council, with a combined 5,500 members, the rabbis include senior figures such as Dayan Ivan Binstock from St John’s Wood Synagogue and Rabbi Joseph Dweck, the senior rabbi of the Sephardi Community of the UK. Addressing concerns about the location, they said: “We firmly believe no other site has the power and significance of a site next to Parliament... it will remind Parliamentarians and the public that the struggle for fairness, justice and equality are vital and never-ending.”

they had seen and what could be done relatively easily to help. The first SRW was held this week, jointly run with Jewish international development charity Tzedek and involving activities and events across the country, with more than 30 communal institutions supporting it. Rosenfeld, a second-year Cambridge undergraduate studying Russian and Arabic, was elected to lead the project last year after a trip to Ghana. He told Jewish News his determination to see the new SRW succeed in part stemmed from some “resistance” to global responsibilities

from the community. “The first time I saw it was for my barmitzvah,” he explained. “I went round raising money for the Water Aid charity and someone asked why do Africans need water if they don’t need the Torah? We encountered that attitude several times, and constantly had to explain to people why social action was important.” Rosenfeld added: “That resistance made me ashamed, but seeing the actions of my peers on the Ben Azzai programme made me proud. The Chief Rabbi is fully behind the initiative and happy to support it.”

BDS HAS CEASED TO BE Two British icons of comedy and music are set to perform in Israel in the coming months, defying boycotters who hope to isolate the Jewish state. Monty Python co-founder John Cleese, 79, (pictured) announced a Tel Aviv date in September as part of his ‘Last Time to See Me Before I Die’ tour, while Welsh music legend Sir Tom Jones, 78, has said he will perform in Tel Aviv in July.

Fawlty Towers star Cleese, who declined a peerage for political reasons, said he was touring for reasons of “alimony” having had three divorces, the most recent costing him £12 million. He will perform on 1 September at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium, in a show billed as standup interspersed with clips from Monty Python and Fawlty Towers, while Jones will perform in the same city on 3 July.

Annual Spiro Tribute

A Passion for A People with Avraham Infeld Wednesday 6 February | 7.30pm £15 | £12 Online early bird Renowned Jewish educator Avraham Infeld will take us on a journey through Jewish Peoplehood, that powerful yet intangible idea that connects Jews together, no matter where they live or how they practice. Starting with the core components of peoplehood and ending with his ideas about the future of the Jewish People, he will examine how we can achieve unity without uniformity in today’s global world. The Annual Spiro Tribute Lecture is sponsored by the Pears Foundation to celebrate the tremendous work of Robin and Nitza Spiro and their contribution to Jewish cultural life in Britain over more than 30 years.

News / Bushey burials / Royal meeting / Rachel Riley

Prince Charles has written a heartfelt letter to the Chief Rabbi expressing his sorrow at not being able to attend the burial of six Holocaust victims at Bushey on Sunday. The heir to the throne, who is patron of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, wrote to Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis on Wednesday after hearing how the remains of six people are to be buried, having been recently identified within a clod of earth taken from Auschwitz by a visiting survivor years ago. “I wanted to write to say how moved I was to hear about the arrangements being made to provide a dignified and final rest to six victims of the Holocaust,” he wrote. “It appears that, tragically, we will never know their names, the family and community who nurtured them, nor the kind of lives they lived before their imprisonment and murder. “Yet we can say with certainty that, along with millions of other victims of the Shoah, they were denied their

very humanity. I can think of no better tribute to them than to restore a semblance of that humanity with a traditional funeral, attended by so many people who are committed to keeping their memory alive. “I am so sorry not to be able to join you for this unique act of memorial, but

I would be grateful if you could convey to the Jewish community my most heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort in our collective resolve to ensure that we never forget them.” The victims, who will be buried at Bushey New Cemetery during a special ceremony due to start at 9.30am, were identified from a piece of earth held in the archives at the Imperial War Museum, where pathologists determined the remains of six adults and one child. United Synagogue president Michael Goldstein has said their burial will be “the ultimate act of kindness” as hundreds are expected to take part in the unique event. The Chief Rabbi said the victims “will now be afforded the dignity of a Jewish funeral within the loving embrace of our community, something which was denied to them and so many others during the course of the Shoah”. The United Synagogue received the remains from the museum during a brief ceremony on Wednesday.

YAIR TELLS PRINCE OF RECOVERY

Prince William met Israeli photographer Yair Shahar, pictured above with his wife Yael and two of his children, at the Royal London Hospital, to hear how his life was saved by the London Air Ambulance after being hit by a car while cycling in Enfield in 2016. The car had driven straight over Shahar’s pelvis, resulting in massive bleeding, but a team led by Dr Simon Walsh were able to stem the flow by the roadside, preventing him dying from loss of blood. The royal announced he was becoming patron of the charity on its 30th anniversary. The prince has worked as a helicopter pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and holds the charity’s lifesaving work close to his heart.

Riley reveals her personal fight against antisemitism Countdown presenter Rachel Riley has opened up about experiencing antisemitic hate since wading into the debate on Labour and antisemitism last year. The Oxford graduate, 32, (pictured sending a message to Twitter critics) who is also known for her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing and being co-host of Sky’s Friday Night Sports, rose to prominence when she replaced Carol Vorderman as Countdown’s maths whizz. She said her Twitter feed typically involves “helping kids with maths homework, rude words on Countdown, and talking about Man United”, but decided to get involved in the summer. “There were just more and more negative stories about Jews,” she told the Channel 4 podcast. “They were either victims, or grasses, or smearers, or complainers, just negative things.” She said the word ‘breadline’ came

up on the show and she recalled the story of how the word came into being [a Jewish baker in New York who gave bread to the poor, who quickly flocked to his bakery, forming a line] and tweeted it, adding the sardonic comment: “Bloody Jews again.” Riley, a non-religious Jew from Essex, said she got called an “antisemite” for that by people who misunderstood it and did not know she was Jewish. “It taught me that people don’t read anything before they call you an antisemite.” She received online hate messages after wading into Labour’s antisemitism row in September. This continued this month after she called ex-MP George Galloway “antisemite scum” on Twitter. Meanwhile, Riley joins Home Secretary Sajid Javid, Dame Margaret Hodge and Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke in Parliament at a Holocaust Educational Trust event next week. She will take part in the Lord Merlyn-Rees Memorial Event on 22 January. “Rachel has been a brave and outspoken opponent of antisemitism,” said a HET spokeswoman. “She will be speaking to us about her experience as a victim of online antisemitic abuse and the importance of standing up against hatred.”

STOLEN TEFILLIN DUMPED IN POND Thieves in Stamford Hill stole Jewish religious garments from a car and dumped them in a pond. The incident was reported by Orthodox neighbourhood watch group Shomrim. A tallit was found dumped by the bins beside a pond on Clapton Common, while tefillin was recovered from the water. Local MP Diane Abbott said: “The desecration of these religious items is terrible and disrespectful.” Hackney’s Mayor, Philip Glanville, added his

RABBI KATZ RETIRES A popular Reform rabbi in north London is to retire after 44 years in the pulpit at the shul founded by his father. Rabbi Steven Katz took over from his father Rabbi Dr Arthur Katz at Hendon almost half a century ago, and has seen it through a recent merger to form Edgware and Hendon Reform congregation. The shul’s new Senior

Rabbi Mark Goldsmith joins from Alyth in March, allowing Katz to hand over to the next generation after decades of work, including mental health awareness, Holocaust education and outreach work. The synagogue praised Katz’s “huge contribution” and “very significant achievements” after joining as an assistant minister in 1975.

Israel welcomes 4m Tourists visited Israel at record levels in the past 12 months with official figures recording a 14 percent increase in 2018 compared to 2017 and a huge 42 percent rise compared to 2016. The Israel Ministry of Tourism said 4.1 million visitors arrived last year, mainly from the US, UK, France, Russia, Germany and Italy, and hailed a “revolution” in the way Israel is now seen as a top destination. “We are optimistic about 2019, which begins with the opening of the new international airport at Timna, bringing new flights to Eilat,” said Tourism Ministry director-general Amir Halevi.

“What was considered a fantasy a few years ago is today a reality, that Israel is a preferred tourist destination among tourism destinations.” Music continues to be a big draw, with a Bon Jovi concert this summer expected to pull in large numbers and an international jazz festival in the

resort city of Eilat next month expected to attract a dedicated following. Israel’s history also continues to capture the imagination, with CNN recently listing Jaffa as a top tourist destination for 2019 with visitors seemingly not put off by conflict on the Gaza border.

ple’s 50-plus years of pursuing Nazi war criminals. The book council noted that the Klarsfelds had been hesitant at first to work on an autobiography, saying they lacked “talent for storytelling”, but were pleased with the final product.

Iman rant seen on YouTube A YouTube video of Mohamed Toujgani, a leading imam in Belgium, praying in a 2009 sermon for Allah to kill all Zionists and burn them in the blood of “martyrs” has been sent to the Belgian League Against Antisemitism (LBCA). “Lord ... fill with fear the hearts of the Zionist oppressors,” Toujgani is seen saying. “Lord, make the blood of the martyrs a weapon under the feet of the Zionists oppressors.”

LBCA president Joel Rubinfeld told local news website DH the text was antisemitic because “it just substitutes ‘Jew’ with ‘Zionist’”. Toujgani, imam of the el Khalil mosque of Brussels, is set to be named president of the conference of Belgian imams, according to DH. He has spoken in favour of tolerance and against jihadism in recent years. He refused to comment on the video.

Hadassah – the hospital with co-existence on call Dr Tamar Elram, the UK-born director of Hadassah Mount Scopus, says the hospital is the embodiment of co-existence that lays to rest the lie that Israel practises apartheid, writes Joe Millis. The obstetrics and gynecology specialist said: “What’s unique about Hadassah and the Israeli healthcare system in general is it’s where coexistence works.” Elram, who led sessions on Jewish values and healthcare at last month’s Limmud Festival, recalled speaking on a panel at Betzalel art college in Jerusalem, where “we discussed whether, if co-existence works in healthcare, it can work elsewhere.” Hadassah Mount Scopus, she added, was the classic example of this – “it’s not only the patients, it’s also the

For example, we sent out Christmas cards to all our Christian staff, just as we would send greetings to our Jewish and Muslim staff on their holidays.” The same was true with the patients, she added. “People come to Hadassah Mount Scopus because of its location in the north east of the city. “This covers the different groups in Jerusalem; the sec-

ular, the Charedim, the Palestinians. Everyone is together, in the wards, in the corridors. They don’t talk about politics, they drink coffee “This is what Hadassah has been doing for the past 100 years and it’s still there.” She added that Hadassah, like Israel, “has to keep on being the best, in technology, in science, in medicine and, unfortunately, in security, too.”

As part of “being the best” that the “Innovation – formerly Startup – Nation” offers, Hadassah is one of three Israeli hospitals in LR Group’s £10.6 million Biohouse for shared workspaces for biotechnology and medical startups. The Biohouse will offer a combination of technological incubator, shared workspace and synergy with the hospital. Elram described the Biohouse concept as a “creative and exciting” development. Hadassah director-general Prof Zeev Rothstein said: “It isn’t a coincidence Hadassah was chosen as the first hospital where such a centre of innovation has opened. “Hadassah offers researchers and innovators not only the optimal working environment, but the co-operation and mentoring of the finest doctors and researchers in every medical field.”

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS SHABBAT SPARKS DISCUSSIONS A leading Jewish charity has said last week’s third annual Head On: Mental Health Awareness Shabbat is “just the start of the discussion in the Jewish community”. Jami, which held the event last weekend, said it was deliberately timed to coincide with the week of Parashat Bo, which tells of the Plague of Darkness – “a suitable launch pad for discussions on the nature of mental health”. More than 120 individuals, synagogues and organisations led activities last week, with clinicianled discussions and sermons about the importance of mental well-being. “Most brave were the people who stood up in their communities for the first time to share the impact of mental ill health on their own lives, including two of our own Jami ambassadors,” said the charity. “I’m sure people learnt a lot about mental health,” said one Pinner Synagogue member. “It is just the start of discussions for our community and it’s got us all talking and thinking.”

Dad’s pop dream comes true, days after death A business director who abandoned a music career 30 years ago owing to lack of confidence has finally realised his dream of having a top 10 single, days after he passed away, writes Joe Millis. Mike Jacobs, 61, recorded the single, Stay, about a breakup with a girlfriend, after he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and given just nine months to live. His son, Josh, 37, told Jewish News: “He would be looking down now, with a beer. He wouldn’t believe it and would be over the moon.” Josh said his dad had always sung, but “didn’t have the confidence [to take it further]. He was really scared of what people might think.” At the time of going to print, Stay is number 2 in the iTunes charts, and Josh said the family “could not believe the excitement the song and accompanying video had caused. It’s like a whirlwind; it’s all going crazy.” The TV director added: “We’ve been getting so many messages from people saying it’s inspired them to do more with their lives, to follow their dreams.

“It just seems to be resonating with people.” The song has given the family “some solace that dad literally lived his dream. It’s been such a hard dark time but this has given my family so much joy”, he said. Mike’s family are working to finish a documentary based on the “incredible

REPRIEVE FOR LARGE FAMILIES AFTER U-TURN Large Jewish families had some good news after the government announced that children born before 2017 would be exempt from the two-child benefits cap. Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd said the move would help 15,000 families, but did not commit to scrapping the cap altogether. Rudd’s announcement was the Government’s latest U-turn over the much-derided Universal Credit system, which anti-poverty campaigners say will hit the poorest hardest. The Orthodox Jewish community is well known for its large families, with birth rates increasing by about 35 percent in the past 10 years, so Jewish groups welcomed the Government’s change of heart. “After years of campaigning against this punitive policy, we welcome this announcement as a step in the right direction,” said the Board of Deputies’ vice president Edwin Shuker. “The two-child policy is by definition an attack on the family and it disproportionately affects religious communities and the poorest in our society. “The government should now listen to the recommendation of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, whose recent report calls for an immediate rethink of this damaging policy.” Rudd said the change was “compassionate and fair”, but Labour said it “does not go far enough”, calling for the government to scrap the two-child limit once and for all. Community leaders were quick to respond, with Rabbi Avroham Pinter, principal of Stamford Hill school Yesodey HaTorah, ech-

oing Labour’s call for Rudd to ditch the cap altogether. Levi Shapiro, director of the Stamford Hill based umbrella group Jewish Community Council, which lobbied the government on this area, said it would have “a very damaging effect” on the Jewish community in Stamford Hill. “The average family here is very large, up to nine or 10 people, so you can imagine the damaging effect of this policy. We’re grateful for the government for listening and pulling back, but we would ask that it goes further, to include children born after 2017 too. The policy should be completely scrapped.” He added: “As a people, we are hard-working and we live by tradition. Part of that tradition is to grow families. Enforcing this policy would force us to reconsider doing so, which would go against our values. The community is very worried.”

Special Report / Ukraine campaign

Setting the record straight One man aims to honour those who helped Ukraine’s Jews in the Holocaust

No one denies that Ukraine’s Greek Catholic Bishop Andrei Sheptytsky saved around 70 Jews from death during the Holocaust, or that – for Ukrainians – he is a nailed-on hero. But for Yad Vashem he is still not Righteous Among the Nations, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The problem, it says, is his politics. Living in the western city of Lviv at the time, Sheptytsky was the spiritual leader of Ukraine’s wartime independence movement, which had initially welcomed the Nazis, who promised them independence from a Soviet regime that had starved two million Ukrainians to death in the 1930s. Sheptytsky is one of about 22,000 Ukrainians who could be – perhaps should be – recognised as Righteous by Israel’s national Holocaust memorial, says Boris Lozhkin, a prominent Ukrainian Jewish businessman who was the Ukrainian president’s chief of staff. “The problem is often documentation,” he says, referring to the wholesale destruction of records during post-war Soviet rule. “We hope to use the archives from organisations like the [Soviet intelligence agency] KGB and also to gather witness statements from those they

saved. Ukraine had 3.5 million Jews before the war, two million of them killed. So we must have more than 2,600 Righteous, no?” In May, Lozhkin was elected to head the umbrella group Jewish Confederation of Ukraine (JCU), “to revitalise the organisation and strengthen its impact”, and his key campaign is focused on recognising and helping Ukraine’s Righteous. Ukraine is home to Europe’s fourth largest Jewish community and to 2,619 nonJewish Righteous, according to Yad Vashem. This is the fourth highest number worldwide, behind Poland, the Netherlands and France. Lozhkin says there are only “about 60” still alive today and his initiative will find and help them financially, pairing local business people to Righteous,

but he says it goes far beyond money. “We need to research the heroes who saved Jews during the Second World War and present this to Yad Vashem, but we also need to record the testimonials of survivors and witnesses and promote their stories. “It involves celebrating the Righteous both physically, with streets, squares and parks renamed in the cities where they lived, but also educationally, weaving their stories into the learning of young Ukrainians.” He describes this as “showing how Ukrainians did a lot for Jewish people during the Holocaust” and says he met a receptive education minister last month about incorporating one day every year on the subject into the national curriculum. “It’s a day where they learn what happened and hear examples of the Righteous in their area. It’s important for Ukrainians today to know because these people are also Ukrainian. It’s a lesson about how to live together, about promoting and honouring champions of peace and tolerance, who can become role models for all of us.” Although there Boris Lozhkin

has been the odd local commemorative initiative, there has been nothing “systematic”, he says, although that is changing. “We already renamed four roads after Ukrainian Righteous, three of them women, including Alexandra Belova, who was killed by the Gestapo in 1942 for her actions. We want many more renamed, all over Ukraine.” Until then, the JCU continues to recognise Sheptytsky as a hero, naming an award in his honour, reasoning that since he personally lambasted Hitler and Himmler over the Holocaust, told his priests and Catholic faithful to help Jews, ordered his monks and nuns to hide, feed and assist the escape of Jewish families and open his own home to Jews facing death, it seems the least one can do.

Multi-million boost for Dan’s bold entertainment brand The story of Think Jam is a saga of imagination, inspiration and luck. Jenni Frazer meets the founder and learns the secret of the firm’s name

S

ometimes business success comes from imagination, inspiration or luck. Sometimes it is all three, and Surbiton-born Daniel Robey certainly has a hefty measure of each. He is the founder and chief executive of Think Jam, an entertainment and marketing business which he set up in 2004. It has now attracted the attention of heavyweight entrepreneur Sir Lloyd Dorfman, founder of the Travelex Group. Sir Lloyd and his son Charles, who is CEO of Dorfman Media Holdings, have made a multi-million investment in Think Jam, as a result of which Robey’s agency is expected to double in size and reach. Robey, cheerful and bouncy and in his early 40s, freely admits his father, a shopkeeper and market trader who sold shoes in Wembley Market, never understood what his son did for a living. Robey Jnr had an early interest in creative arts and, though he claims he was not particularly academic, secured a place at Manchester Metropolitan University on the then brand-new interactive multi-media course, the first of its kind in the country. “No one had heard of my course, no one knew what I did.” And at the end of his first year he was taken aside by his professor who advised him that he might consider not returning for a second year because of “oversocialising” in Manchester. The advice had the opposite effect. Robey knuckled down and in 1997 achieved a first-class degree. “It gave me a nudge — and all through my career and life, little nudges spurred me on,”he says. Not that Robey seems to have needed many nudges. He says he has “grafted” since he was 10, accompanying his father to the markets, working all through university to support himself, then beginning his career with an agency called Empire Design, a print company specialising in film posters. Robey’s first job at Empire was to design CD-Roms, which he says “were about to become cool marketing collateral for films”. These, frequently given away with weekend newspapers or magazines, contained trailers for hot films and might include extra features such as interviews with the cast and crew, or mini-films devoted to “the making of” the main event. Robey and his young team designed the CD-Roms, programmed and developed them. Eventually, he started meeting the clients, networking and expanding the business. But almost in tandem the technology was changing and a new area developed of websites to accompany film releases, with socalled “Easter eggs” — hidden surprises — for

the consumer on the sites. As the technology changed and Robey’s understanding of the business opportunities in the entertainment world changed too, his time at Empire came to an end. In 2004, Empire’s management decided to drop the digital division which Robey had helped to create, and he was made redundant. He saw it as an opportunity, and thus launched his own company, Think Jam, which was the first digital-only entertainment agency in Britain. Since 2004, Think Jam has gradually built up a reputation for digital solutions to almost every type of entertainment — from films to games, from theatre to TV, from book publicity to management of social media content. Now, with the Dorfman investment at hand, Robey is looking at sports promotion and marketing. “It’s a seismic change for us”, he says. “It will enable us to be much bolder, more confident in what we do”. To date, Robey’s company looks after the social channels for Peppa Pig and has worked on more than 3,000 films in the past 15 years. The client base features such heavy hitters as 20th Century Fox, the Stanley Kubrick Estate, Lionsgate and Entertainment One. Robey is clearly thrilled at the new partnership with the Dorfmans — Sir Lloyd is a longtime mentor and adviser — and notes that “with the consolidation of studios such as the Fox-Disney merger and acquisitions such as the AT&T/Time Warner deal, there has been a big change in the media buying landscape, which needs to be addressed”. Away from work, Robey, a passionate cyclist, has poured his energies into supporting and managing the annual fund-raising bike ride for Langdon, the charity for Jewish people with learning disabilities. And there remains the question of that rather odd name for the company that he has set up. He smiles ruefully. “I had a cousin called Jemma who died of cancer when she was 18,” he says. Robey was in his late 20s at the time and very close to her; he was still at Empire but vowed that if he ever managed to have his own company, he would remember Jemma in the name that he gave it. He decided he would use three letters from his cousin’s name, “J”, “A” and “M”, but then found he couldn’t register “Jam” by itself as a company title. Pondering the problem with friends and colleagues, he decided that a creative agency should have the word “think” in its name, and thus Think Jam was born.

For Daniel Robey, his company’s title is both a private and public way of memorialising a beloved family member.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

In the deep end of antisemitism Be shocked by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s wicked ban on disabled Israeli swimmers at the World Para Swimming Championships in his country, but not surprised. Zealots of his ilk have turned Muslim antisemitism across Asia and the Middle East into an epidemic, poisioning everthing from politics to sport. Even the Miss World contest is not immune. “We maintain our stand on the prohibition,” the execrable antisemite, who famously called Jews “hook-nosed” on BBC’s HARDtalk, lectured this week. “If they (the Israelis) come, it is a violation. If the International Paralympic Committee wants to withdraw Malaysia’s right to host the championship, they can do so.” The silence surrounding Malaysia’s racism is almost as sickening. Where is the outrage? Where is the condemnation? Where are the boycott threats among the 70 countries sending swimmers? A paltry 1,600 people, one imagines virtually all appalled UK Jews, have signed an online petition demanding the country reverses its decision. Asked to comment by this newspaper, the British Paralympic Association simply trod water: “We hope the situation is resolved so all eligible athletes will be able to compete at the event later this summer.” Morality rarely talks, but money always does. It’s now incumbent on the World Para Swimming Championships’ sponsors Visa and BP to take a stand and refuse to let their brands be allied with bigotry. Both companies were yet to answer our calls and emails by the time we went to press. The silence surrounding this affront is obscene. DON’T BLAME DOGS FOR BARKING It’s regrettable to see the usual coterie of Reform rabbis in the UK quoted in your lead story ‘Most olim not Jewish’, bashing Israel and the Orthodox rabbinate there, but no one from the Orthodox rabbinate in the UK (Jewish News, 4 January). Rabbi Jackie Tabick, a reformist I like and respect but have always disagreed with on most things Jewish for the past 40 years, and Rabbi Danny Rich, a Liberal who wants to suck up to Corbyn and his friends, have beliefs that would cause or contribute heavily to the very dismantling of Orthodox Judaism, and with it the traditional values of the Jewish nation. While Reform and Liberals may think they mean well, the path to hell is sometimes paved with good intentions such as theirs. When the

THIS LAW TARGETS MUSLIMS AND JEWS Belgium’s schechita ban has won widespread support, with animal rights activists being one of its main promoters. The law also means the many Muslims fleeing turbulence within their native lands will also be unable to obtain halal meat. Simply put, Jews and Muslims (for once a possible common cause), plus a number of other faiths affected by this law, are being blatantly

targeted and, as we are only too well aware, the banning of what are basically one’s civil rights doesn’t end with what you consume. Should the likes of Jeremy Corbyn gain access to the highest office, I am sure those promulgating this issue will find a sympathetic ear, no doubt casting Jews as the main protagonists.

Charedim and schools I’m an admirer of Alex Brummer as an economic commentator, but his fictionalised representation of the Charedi community (Jewish News, 10 January) is well below par. I was a trustee of the Stamford Hill Jewish housing association for 17 years. I can tell Mr Brummer nearly every representative for the Charedi communities willing to discuss social and economic problems with me highlighted the same issue. Young Charedi men receive an inadequate education to equip them for life; young women have a better chance, but this primarily reflects the expected roles of women as breadwinners, home-makers and

primary parenting while their husbands continue learning in yeshiva. In the same edition, you reported a group of Orthodox rabbis setting up a working group to scrutinise Ofsted rulings on Charedi schools, quoting religious tolerance. Behind this is a cynical attempt to preserve in aspic an education system that has contributed to the worsening socio-economic deprivation in Charedi communities, including many instances of family breakdown, which Mr Brummer somewhat obscurely was attempting to highlight.

RUBASHKIN ‘WITCHHUNT’ In labelling Sholom Rubashkin ‘a convicted criminal’ in his letter, professor Geoffrey Alderman fails in his calling as a historian (‘Fraudster was not pardoned’, Jewish News, 10 January). He has done so by failing to employ basic historical research methodology to look behind the conviction in question. Had he done so, he would have seen the astonishing elements

of judicial collusion, witchhunt, bias and disproportionate sentencing, as highlighted by distinguished jurists. This would have entitled him to reject the conviction as being unsupported by impartial judicial process, in much the same way that one would reject the findings of a Soviet show trial.

A PRAYER FOR ALL OUR PASTS

It’s rare for a newspaper front page to reduce me to tears, but that’s what happened on seeing the mourner’s prayer on page one of last week’s Jewish News. This weekend’s symbolic funeral for six unknown victims of the Holocast will be a profound moment in our community’s history. We are now many decades from the Nazi Holocaust, yet its horrific impact is still being felt, and continue to be, for many decades to come.

Reasons to be upbeat during bleakest month JENNI FRAZER

T

raditionally — which in marketing speak actually means something made up in the past five years — this is the bleakest week of the year. It’s the week when all the holiday overspending catches up with people, nobody has yet been paid and January feels like the longest month in the world. I’d like to lighten the burden a bit, but it’s quite tough, what with Les Misérables on TV pretty much summing up the national mood. Politically, it’s like the Wild West out there and, by the time this column reaches print, we could all have been signed up to pay for Trumpolino’s wall, who knows? Anything could happen these days. I’ve been trying to take the Jewish temperature and, as ever, it’s up and down. We have, as the late great Ian Dury was wont to say, reasons to be cheerful (and what Dury would have made of his

backing band, the appropriatelynamed Blockheads, welcoming the likes of Gilad Atzmon on stage with them over Christmas, the Lord only knows). Reason to be cheerful number one? All praise to the Take-No-Prisoners Rachel Riley, the Countdown TV presenter who has come out, all guns blazing, against antisemitism – attracting some loathsome responses, but actually, leading to reason to be cheerful number two. And that is that Riley’s tough as old boots stance against the haters has brought out some pretty high-profile support. Her fellow Countdown presenter, Nick Hewer – again, not someone to mince his words – has said he is severing connections with Labour, for which he has voted all his life, as a result of the abuse levelled at Riley. And here is reason number three: it’s not just Nick Hewer. Stephen Fry – actor, writer, presenter, and, I hope we can agree, pretty decent human being – tweeted simply: “I stand with you, Rachel”. This attracted a whopping 7.3 thousand “likes” – although, on the downside, he ended up

HEWER AND FRY DIDN’T HAVE TO PUT THEIR HEADS ABOVE THE PARAPET

having to engage with George Galloway. Now it is true that, for many years, Hewer was Lord Sugar’s right-hand man, and that Stephen Fry is halachically Jewish. So they do have, as they say, skin in the game. But they didn’t have to say anything, didn’t have to put their heads above the parapet. And besides, as we know to our cost, merely the fact of being Jewish doesn’t guarantee an intelligent response to this whole antisemitism/anti-Zionist mess these days, as various examples such as the egregious Atzmon, Miko Peled, and our very own Bear Hunt Michael Rosen,

can provide copious evidence. Not everything in our garden is rosy, of course. You only have to glance at Lewisham Deptford Constituency Labour Party (CLP) and its attempt to persuade people that Israel is behind the campaign to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. It is the same CLP that announced the Jewish Labour Movement was not an appropriate body to give training on antisemitism — who would be appropriate, one wonders? Well, if it were training in how to be an antisemite, there are unfortunately too many from which to choose. I want to finish with a reason to be cheerful that has nothing to do with antisemitism (well, except tangentially), and everything to do with decency. That is the reburial of Jewish Holocaust remains at Bushey Cemetery on Sunday, an extraordinary symbolic acknowledgment of the power of the Shoah still to touch us all. Kol hakavod to everyone involved.

WOODSIDE PARK UNITED SYNAGOGUE

ast week we witnessed horrendous abuse directed towards Anna Soubry MP during a live TV interview. Shouts of “Nazi” drowned out her voice and she was subsequently harassed, and her path blocked, as she attempted to walk into Parliament in full gaze of the police, who did not intervene. There was public outcry over the increased prevalence of such incidents towards MPs and journalists. This was not an isolated incident, quite the opposite. Harassment and intimidation has become de rigeur for many MPs as they walk to and from Parliament as the Brexit stalemate continues to dominate public discourse. Freedom of speech and demonstrations are the bedrock of any democracy, standing outside Parliament vocalising your opinions as MPs enter and leave Parliament is a fundamental right in a free society, but as

Anna Soubry was harrassed near Parliament

Ms Soubry pointed out, “the line is very clear between when it is a peaceful, lawful protest and when it is clearly intimidating and it’s designed to intimidate and shut down democracy, shut up MPs, shut up broadcasters”. As recently as July 2016, Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered by a member of the far right for her pro-Remain views. Rather than being a wake-up call for the rhetoric to be toned down, and for both MPs and members

of the public to engage in a more respectful debate, if anything, as the bumpy road to Brexit continues, the rhetoric has become more aggressive from all sides. Great pride is taken that in Britain we can freely express our opinions and disagree with others in all spheres of society and life. As Jews, this freedom resonates with us particularly, as from time immemorial, Judaism has encouraged and celebrated the difference of opinions as reflected by the debates of our Oral Torah from the likes of Hillel and Shamai – there is historic basis for the old joke “two Jews, three opinions!” Yet we strive always for disagreement and debate to be carried out with mutual respect and in a constructive fashion, in search of the ultimate truth. One of the greatest places for societal and political debate has traditionally been on

college campuses. Yet, in recent years, the ability to publicly hold different perspectives and opinions, in particular about Israel, has become more and more challenging, and similar scenes as endured last week by Ms Soubry, are constantly seen in our educational establishments. Although very sad that this intimidation is now manifesting itself beyond the campus and into the heart of our long established, respected democracy, this may be a wake-up call to British society as a whole, to say yes to freedom of speech, yes to the right to be heard and to demonstrate, but no to intimidation, no to the subjugation of opinions and no to name-calling. Let us hope the outrage heard last week will give the British people pause and allow respectful, honest and open debate in our country and on our campuses once more.

Liberal values are being tested to breaking point CHARLOTTE LITTLEWOOD WORKING WITH MUSLIMS AGAINST ANTISEMITISM

H

istorically, Muslims and Jews have protected and stood for one another. During the Second World War, Albanian Muslims sheltered Jews, risking their own lives. One such man was Ali Sheqer Pashkaj, who invited a group of Nazis into his store and plied them with food and wine while passing on a note to a young Jew to flee into the woods to a designated place. The Nazis were furious about the escape, but Ali claimed innocence. Four times they put a gun to his head and threatened to burn down the village, but Ali persevered and ultimately saved Yeoshua Baruchowic, sheltering him for two years. Ali’s story is one of many that appears in a short film celebrating such heroes and solidarity between Jews and Muslims. The film had been due to be shown in a Golders Green mosque, but the event was cancelled. Tenuous and irrelevant connections

between Yad Vashem, which created the film, and the state of Israel, where the museum is based, were used to apply pressure on the mosque to cancel the event. Yad Vashem is a world-leader in Holocaust education that, as a part of its exhibition in Jerusalem, commemorates the AlbanianMuslims who heroically sheltered Jews during the war. Concerns were raised by Roshan Salih, editor of 5Pilllars, a news site that regularly platforms controversial speakers, such as Haitham al-Haddad, who considers homosexuality “evil” and has backed female genital mutilation. Salih responded to the cancellation of the event by commending the mosque for responding to community concerns. It would appear, then, that pressure from an individual who publishes extreme views successfully prevented an interfaith event from taking place. A sobering notion that extremism in the UK has such a power over our liberal, tolerant, multifaith community. It is not only this significant interfaith

IT IS NOT ONLY THIS INTERFAITH EVENT THAT HAS BEEN PREVENTED IN THE FACE OF A NEW TREND IN KOWTOWING TO EXTREMISTS

event that has been prevented in the face of a new trend in kowtowing to extremists. Last November, persecuted Christian Asia Bibi, fleeing from Pakistani blasphemy laws, was refused asylum in the UK amid concerns of community unrest and attacks. We are entering a time where our liberal, tolerant values truly are being fundamentally and effectively challenged. However, it is not all doom and gloom. The new year has seen a renewed commitment to tackling the rise in hate. Prime Minister Theresa May, responding to the All-Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism, had this to say: “2019 will be the year where we stand up and say there is no place for antisemitism and racial hatred.”

Dedicated third sector organisations continue to promote solidarity. Muslims Against Antisemitism entered the new year with this message: “In 2018, we felt we had to draw a line and stand with Jewish communities, who were suffering antisemitism and feeling that politics was allowing antisemitic discourse to run through it on the left. “In 2019, we will redouble our efforts to get more Muslims to stand in solidarity.” And in response to the refusal of asylum to Asia Bibi, three imams wrote to Home Secretary, Sajid David, asking him “to make a clear and proactive statement that Britain would welcome a request for sanctuary… if there are intolerant fringe voices who would object, they must be robustly challenged, not indulged”.

Opinion

Clowns are to the left, populists to the right PAUL GROSS

POLITICAL COMMENTATOR

I

f committed left-wingers and committed right-wingers agree on one thing, it’s their view of self-defined “centrists”. Centrist politics are derided as either fuzzy and values-free, or the refuge for those who simply cannot make up their minds. This not only does a disservice to a great many driven and principled people, but it misses the urgency of the moment; we need strong, centrist politics today like never before. In the US, political polarisation has reached levels unseen for a century. The Republican right has become the vehicle for Donald Trump’s antiimmigrant populism; while the Democratic base is threatening to move away from the patriotic, ‘one-nation’ liberalism of the Kennedys and Clintons, towards the angry, West-bashing identity politics of “progressive” millennials. In Europe, the success of authoritarian populist parties has been matched by the nearcollapse of traditionally dominant left wing political institutions such as Germany’s Social

Democratic Party and France’s Socialist Party. In Britain, one country in Europe where the established progressive party is still a force, that party has been taken over by a far left cabal that believes Hugo Chavez got it right in Venezuela. In both the US and the UK, one response has been to strengthen and promote centrist politics. Israel offers us a variation on the same theme. It has long been the case that, on the primary fault line of Israeli politics – the conflict with the Palestinians – the majority of Israelis are firmly in the centre. Rejecting both the left’s entreaties to place “ending the occupation” at the top of the priority list, and the right’s determination to hold on to the West Bank forever, the majority of Israelis accept we are in a catch-22. They understand the left’s dream of “peace now” runs the real risk of Gaza on a larger scale, a terror state holding the strategic high ground in the West Bank, with all of Israel within missile range. And they understand the right’s dream of Greater Israel could lead us to the end of the Zionist dream of a democratic state with a Jewish majority. Beyond the conflict, we can see in Israel

THE MAJORITY OF ISRAELIS ACCEPT WE ARE IN A CATCH-22

more of the same polarisation in evidence across the democratic world. The legendary Israeli Labor Party that established the state and gave us David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin, is teetering on the brink of electoral calamity according to polls. Its leader Avi Gabbay is in the news only because of his treatment of Tzipi Livni and the veritable circus of party infighting he has created. Meretz remains a principled but very small presence in the Knesset, hamstrung by a dogmatic attachment to peace negotiations with a thoroughly discredited Palestinian leadership. On the far left, there is a small but vocal gaggle of post-Zionists angling for the removal of Israel’s Jewish character, establishing a “state of all its citizens”. The Likud of Benjamin Netanyahu has

become increasingly detached from its tradition; embracing populism of the lowest kind with his repeated attacks on the media and his acolytes routinely calling out “leftist traitors” and delegitimising institutions of the state. Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked promise us a ‘New Right’, but it is Shaked who has led the assault on the Supreme Court. In recent years, Knesset members from all the right wing parties seem to have opted for a distinctly illiberal democracy. It is Yair Lapid’s Yesh Atid party that represents the most compelling centrist alternative to the collapsing left and the increasingly populist right. It accepts the need to ultimately separate from the Palestinians, but will look to do so in the context of a plan with “pragmatic Arab states”. If you believe in an Israel that is proudly Jewish and proudly democratic; if you believe that peace will require territorial concessions, and you understand these can’t be made with ‘peace partners’ who reject Israel’s very legitimacy, you are part of the Israeli centre. And in Israel, as in the rest of today’s troubled democracies, the centre is where most of the solutions can be found to the problems of this polarised age.

Orli Burnley Myers celebrated her batmitzvah in Manchester last weekend together with family and friends. To make her celebration even more meaningful, Orli invited GIFT, a charity whose purpose is to encourage, educate and promote a culture of giving and volunteering among young Jews in the community to run a social action activity. Orli’s guests decorated T-shirts and stuffed build a bear teddy bears to be sent to an orphanage in Ukraine. Sophie Woolfstein, who ran the GIFT activity, said: “There was an extra excitement in the air, as the guests were there doing an incredible act, thinking about other children who are a lot less fortunate than they are.”

2 MORE CHAT NEEDED Good parenting featuring conversation rather than confrontation was the key to avoiding friction with teenagers who spend too much time gazing at screens. This was one of the solutions put forward by a panel of experts, which included the headteachers of Yavneh College and JFS, a family psychotherapist and the chief executive of Jewish Interactive, an organisation that creates educational resources for smartphones and tablets, when they joined an audience of around 90 concerned parents, grandparents and youngsters at St Albans United Synagogue to watch the American documentary film, Screenagers.

UP THE SCOUTS

On a cloudy windy Sunday morning, intrepid explorers from the 20th Finchley Scout Group climbed the O2 building in North Greenwich. The scouts said scaling the former Millennium Dome was such fun that they wanted to do it again – despite some fears. The ascent was made possible by the scout group winning an award from the Jack Petchey Foundation. One scout said: “We had a great time, I want to go again – even though it was a bit scary.”

YAHRZEIT VISIT

Members of Enfield, Barnet and Southgate United Synagogues joined to commemorate Maimonides’ yahrzeit by visiting Cambridge to view exhibits of the Cairo Geniza written by, and relating to, him. Cambridge University Library has some 200,000 fragments from the Geniza – a collection of Jewish manuscript fragments discovered in Cairo – the largest collection in the world, in its archives. Chaplain Reuven Leigh gave an overview of the life of the Rambam, his travels, writings and teachings.

5 MAKING POLICY Members of Liberal Judaism’s youth movement, LJY-Netzer, have voted to form a new board at their annual decision making forum. LJY-Netzer Veidah takes place each January, during which participants, from school Year 11 upwards, get together to decide on policy and ideology for the coming year. The key decision was to form the movement’s first board (pictured). It is comprised of Bogrim (18-25-yearolds) and Galim (16-18 year-olds), using the combined name Bobag. Members also selected a new tikkun olam project for 2019 – tackling race, gender and religious discrimination and hate crime. There were sessions led by Citizens UK and Yachad, where par-

6&THE7 HAILING TAXIS

Norwood thanked the London Taxi Drivers’ Charity for Children for continued support (the two charities have a relationship going back almost 90 years). The fund, which supports children with special needs through donating to relevant charities and organising outings, has donated nearly £700 to Norwood’s Buckets and Spades respite centre in East Finchley. The money has gone towards redecorating one of the bedrooms at the respite centre.

8TREE-MENDOUS! GIFT charity made Tu’Bishvat fruit collections, and child volunteers helped with flower planting in pots for old age homes and took part in educational sessions for young people in schools, youth groups and shuls across London, Manchester and Jerusalem. Manchester’s Yavneh Bat Chayil group participated in a session about planting the seeds of their journeys of womanhood. Yoni Shine, 12, said: “Making up the fruit baskets was a really fun activity and it felt good knowing a family who might not be able to afford such nice fruit would appreciate it on Tu B’Shvat.”

Real gem of a stay!

Alex Galbinski finds much to admire in Antwerp, Belgium’s cosmopolitan second city and unofficial capital of Flanders

A

longside Bruges and Amsterdam, Antwerp is the ideal place for a short break. The architecture in Belgium’s second-largest city is impressive, its charming cobbled streets and hidden alleyways are the stuff of fairy tales and there’s everything you’d want close by – culture, food, fashion and shopping. My friend and I took the Eurostar from St Pancras International to Brussels Midi – a very comfortable two-hour journey – and, as we had booked standard premier seats, were offered multiple cups of tea and coffee and a light meal. It set us off to a good start. The onward train to Antwerp is only 45 minutes and, after marvelling at the splendour of Central Station – rated by Newsweek magazine as the world’s fourth most beautiful train station – it was just a short walk across to the Radisson Blu Astrid Hotel. Having recently completed an extensive £8million refurbishment across the entire four-star hotel, with new bedrooms and two restaurants, it makes for a truly relaxing stay. Our room, a junior suite, was modern, bright and spacious – big enough to fit a sofa and armchair that provided a spot of calm next to the large window overlooking Astrid Square. The

inclusion of free Wi-Fi, films on demand, a daily English newspaper, and the use of a Nespresso machine were very welcome. The hotel also has a health club, which includes a heated indoor pool and spa services. We made the most of our afternoon arrival to first explore the city’s famous diamond district – a mere stone’s throw away (pun intended). Around 85 percent of the world’s uncut diamonds are traded here and a large proportion of Antwerp’s Jews are said to still be involved in the sector. In any case, many of the shops around the Central Station are Jewish-owned, and the surrounding streets are home to large numbers of Chasidim and kosher shops. One trader advised us to visit what he said was the city’s best kosher bakery, Kleinblatt. Alongside its breads and pastries, it is also famous for its pralines, party cakes, ice cream and pasta. After a quick wander around Chinatown, we headed back for dinner to the hotel’s sleek Made In Antwerp bar and restaurant, where we were impeccably looked after. In keeping with the restaurant’s emphasis on local produce, we were offered Belgian Havn gin flavoured with rhubarb, cinnamon pearls and star anise alongside our starter – a generous plate of hot smoked salmon salad. The salmon was fluffy, melting in the mouth, and came with candied beetroot and mixed leaves. Even the butter was beautifully presented, topped with crunchy lotus root crisps. My steamed trout was delivered in neat rolls with a beurre blanc sauce, while my friend said her Belgian Blue steak – served with romanesco, courgettes and chips – was the best she’d had in a long time. Our dessert – éclair with vanilla-mokka cream and the classically Belgian dame blanche was beautifully rounded off with a glass (or two) of a Pineau des Charentes.

The following day, we explored the historic part of the medieval city. Antwerp’s symbol is a hand, thanks to the legend about a giant whose hand was cut off and thrown into the river. The tale’s hero is depicted in the Grote Markt’s baroque Brabo Fountain, situated in front of the magnificent town hall, and hand-shaped biscuits and chocolates are sold throughout the city. Walking into the beautiful Café Impérial for lunch, on Meir (the main shopping street, where grand 18th and 19th century buildings house European chain stores), we felt transported back in time. A former royal palace in which Napoleon once lived, complete with impressive chandeliers and ornate gilded ceiling curlicues, the prices somehow remained affordable. Its pretty courtyard would be ideal in summer and is next door to the Chocolate Line store, where you can watch confectionary being made. For art lovers, there are many museums to explore. Rubenshuis, the former home and studio of Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens, is now dedicated to his work, but also contains pieces by his peers and contemporaries. Other museums display his works, as well as those of additional 16th and 17th century artists. There are, of course, many more sites of interest, including the majestic and gothic Cathedral of Our Lady; Antwerp Zoo, which is

home to 5,000 animals of 950 different species; and you can also view gems at DIVA, the diamond museum, which opened in May. But we were happiest soaking up the atmosphere by meandering through the cobbled streets near the Vlaeykensgang, an alley dating back from 1591 that was originally inhabited by shoemakers and the poor. These enchanting paths that are close to the cathedral have undergone careful renovation and now house chocolate box-pretty antique shops, galleries and trendy restaurants. We ate a delicious meal at bistro ’T Hofke, after gingerly descending the steep steps into its cellar room. It’s a huge cliché to say our weekend in Antwerp was too short and that we’d like to return – but it would also be true.

Passion fruit and banana drizzle cake

With

Denise Phillips

PREPARATION TIME 20 MINS

Makes 1 loaf

COOKING TIME 1 1/4 HOURS

This is the perfect cake for ripe bananas and, apart from the passion fruit, makes great use of store cupboard ingredients. The passion fruit has to be one of the most intensely and enticingly scented of all fruits. Although not exactly a local food, good quality imports are conveniently in abundance when northern hemisphere summer fruits are out of season. They are found in UK shops all year round, but if you are looking for ripeness and quantity, then June through to September is best. Passion fruit are rich in vitamins A and C and are a good source of potassium and iron, while the seeds are high in fibre.

INGREDIENTS

Ingredients 75g soft margarine 100g light brown muscovado sugar 130g plain flour 75g wholemeal flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 eggs 4 very ripe bananas – mashed up

METHOD

75g walnuts – toasted and roughly chopped

1 Preheat oven to 160°C fan/180°C/gas mark 4. Line and grease a 1kg loaf tin. 2 Beat the margarine, sugar, flours, baking powder, eggs and banana together. 3 Stir in the nuts and transfer to the prepared baking tin. 4 Bake for 1¼ hours, or until a skewer comes out clean. 5 Cool for 10 minutes in the tin then lift out and cool on a wire rack. 6 Mix the icing sugar with most of the passion fruit juice to make an icing that

Torah For Today

SEDRA BeShalach

BY RABBI BORUCH M BOUDILOVKSY After centuries of residence on Egyptian soil under unbearable suffering, our nation finally takes its first steps into freedom in this week’s parsha. This was not a liberation that has shaped Judaism to this very day. ‘Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has not made me a slave.’ This blessing, recited daily, is consistent with the intense and almost obsessive Jewish commitment to freedom. The Torah encourages the observance of Pesach, ‘the time of our freedom’, in terms unprecedented in almost all other biblical festivals. When the process of freedom is described, multiple words are used to illustrate the liberating experience: ‘I shall take you out’, ‘I shall rescue you’, ‘I shall redeem you’, ‘I shall take you to Me’, ‘I shall bring you to the land’(Exodus 6: 6 – 8). Many of the biblical commandments are ‘in memory of the exodus from Egypt’. We are commanded to remember the Exodus every day of our lives and the Torah frowns upon the Jewish slave who voluntarily enters slavery beyond the minimal term. Judaism’s efforts in developing our awareness of freedom reminds us that freedom can easily be lost. Even when only some of us are fortunate to live in free societies, our freedom is too often lost in abusive relationships, uncompromising employment conditions, addiction, poverty, mental health conditions, etc. It is aware of how it must therefore be zealously appreciated, protected, and preserved and asserts that as free people we must become worthy of our freedom. Freedom in Judaism is not only an elementary human right, it is primarily a calling. It only enables, but obligates us to shape our lives with covenant, values, compassion, justice, and truth. When we bless God for not being slaves, we are inspired to conserve our freedom, as well as employ it, thereby becoming worthy of this beautiful gift. I pray we will all be blessed with freedom and the wisdom to use it gracefully.  Rabbi Boruch M Boudilovksy serves Young Israel of North Netanya

Inviting a convicted fraudster to address the community BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin was sent to prison for 27 years for bank fraud and money laundering, although he was later acquitted on charges of knowingly employing underage workers at Agriprocessors, a kosher meat processing factory. His sentence was commuted by US President Donald Trump after eight years, in 2017. He is due to give lectures on the importance of being honest in business to UK Jewish audiences (although one talk has been cancelled). So, what does the Torah have to say about this? A person embroiled in scandal should not then go on to take a position of ethical authority on the

matter. Rabbi Joshua was disallowed from taking the position of Nasi (the highest ranking member of the Sanhedrin), after the demotion of Rabban Gamliel from that position for having publicly humiliated Rabbi Joshua. The Talmud names and shames one of the sages as “Geniva” – which means “ganev” or thief – because of his reputation of plagiarising teachings from another sage. This attitude of the rabbis allowed them to cite certain sages whose opinions were valuable in debate on a variety of subjects, but not to cite them as paragons of saintly virtue in the area in which they were

ALLOWING RUBASHKIN TO SPEAK IN THE UK IS INJURIOUS TO THE ETHICAL REPUTATION OF OUR COMMUNITY

deemed suspect. For example, our sages would not have approved a high-profile convert such as Nero to lecture on honouring one’s mother. During the Agriprocessors trial, allegations of serious crimes against the migrants were exposed by Spanish translator, Erik Camayd-Freixas, but no conviction was secured. Joyfully celebrating the commuted sentence – which is not a pardon – of the head of a kosher meat producer under these circumstances, makes me doubly check the ethical kashrut of the meat I now consume. The commutation by Trump leaves the conviction and its consequences intact – in that sense, the invitation extended to Rubashkin to speak to UK audiences is injurious to the ethical reputation of Anglo-Jewry.  Rabbi Abel serves Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation and is padre to HM Armed Forces

The Bible Says What? ‘Worship must include everyone’ RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER Recently, we read the weekly Torah portion of Bo, which describes the final three plagues in Egypt. Right at the beginning of the reading, Moses and Aaron confront Pharaoh. It’s fascinating that they do not ask for the children of Israel to be released from slavery, but instead say they need to celebrate a festival and praise the Divine – if Pharaoh doesn’t let them, the next plague of locusts will come. Pharaoh is suspicious, perhaps naturally, about this. So he asks them who will be going to take part in this act of worship. Within Egyptian culture, only some of the men would participate in such an act of worship. Moses responds very differently. All of the people would go, whether young or old, sons or daughters, everyone was needed. Pharaoh rejects this, saying that Moses’ desire for all the people to be involved is suspicious. It must mean he is up to

something. The men can go if they want, but that is all. It may be that Moses was being ingenious and trying to free the people, but he also delivered a message of radical inclusivity that we can hold up today as a beacon. To go and celebrate the Eternal’s festival, he had to take everyone. No matter their age, no matter their gender – they had to all come together. Even the flocks and herds needed to be there. To serve God correctly, all the children of Israel had to be included. Moses is teaching that in our service of the Creator of the Universe, we must be united as a community. We must not discriminate based on age, gender or any other characteristic. Only by having everyone and everything we have pointed in one direction can our holy gatherings be true and complete.  Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner is the Senior Rabbi to Reform Judaism

Progressively Speaking What you can do to help protect our environment BY RABBI JANET BURDEN If I’d written this at an earlier point in my life, I would have dictated a long list of actions we should all be taking, as if I were the ultimate oracle of ‘green wisdom’. As I have grown older, however, I have learned that significant lasting change in society must begin with a shift in the way individuals think. Only a few years ago, we gave little thought to our use of plastic or the impact of our consumption of so much meat. Our increasing awareness today is now fuelling changes we need to make. But how do we, as Jews, change ourselves? One of the best ways is through the techniques of our Mussar tradition. Mussar encourages us to work on ourselves by cultivating the various character traits (middot), which the Mishnah says helps us to acquire Torah (Pirkei Avot 6:6). As we approach Tu B’Shvat, there are three things we could all

be trying. The first is being happy with one’s lot. Ben Zoma said: “Who is rich? Those who are happy with their portion.” We can be content with what we have, rather than endlessly acquiring more. We might also consider downsizing our homes when the children leave. That step could save enormous amounts of energy and address the

lack of housing for others. The second is moderating our business activities. Amassing wealth fuels our desire for consumption. We damage our health by eating and drinking to excess. We fly to New York for shopping trips. We host extravagant simchahs. But what does this teach our children? Finally, we can embark on learning, in order to practice. Rabbi Natan said: “The individual who has no good deeds, even though that person has studied much Torah – to whom may that individual be compared? To a person who in building lays bricks first and then heaps stones over them, so that even if a little water collects, it at once undermines the structure.” Acting on what we learn about the environment is perhaps one of the most important steps we can take.  Rabbi Janet Burden serves Beit Klal Yisrael

LONDON • WATFORD

Our trusty team of advisers answer your questions about everything from law and finance to dating and dentistry. This week: Tips for family mediation, gifting a house while continuing to live in it and finding a commercial mediator

REBEKAH GERSHUNY FAMILY SOLICITOR

FREEMANS SOLICITORS Dear Rebekah My ex and I are starting mediation. Do you have any tips to help us achieve a successful outcome? Francesca

• Stay calm. Give yourself sufficient time to attend the meetings – avoid having to rush. Let the mediator know if you need time to think about the options or if you feel yourself becoming stressed or upset in meetings; the mediator is there to help you and your ex reach a positive outcome. • Listen and keep listening. Mediation is all about listening to what your ex is saying; try to stay focused on the issues, rather than on how you are feeling about your ex.

Dear Francesca Family mediation is an opportunity to try to settle your case without going to court. Here are my tips to help you achieve a successful outcome:

• Be determined that you can resolve matters without going to court. While it may not be easy to reach a solution, thinking that you can, and remaining positive, will take you a long way towards achieving a successful outcome.

• Be prepared. Mediation may be your last chance to resolve matters out of court, and to get the outcome that you want. Spend time thinking about the issues you want to resolve. If the mediator asks you for information or documentation provide these promptly and in full.

• Be realistic. Think about whether your objectives are realistic; mediation is not about winning, but about finding practical and workable solutions to the problems at hand. The solutions that you can agree in mediation are generally more creative and varied than those imposed by a court.

after making the gift. What advice would you have for me? Ruth

CAROLYN ADDLEMAN DIRECTOR OF LEGACIES

KKL EXECUTOR AND TRUSTEE COMPANY Dear Carolyn I’m 77, a widow and live alone. I am considering gifting my house to my married son and continue to live in it alone as I understand I can avoid inheritance tax if I’m still alive seven years

Dear Ruth There are some very good reasons not to do what you are proposing. You have said you intend to carry on living alone in the house and that your son is married, so presumably he has his own house, which he will continue to occupy with his family. The inheritance taxman will regard this as a gift with a reservation of benefit – in other words, you reserve the enjoyment of the object in question (in your case, your home) while purporting to have given it away. This would stop the seven-year

clock from ticking, unless you were to pay your son a market rent for the right to continue living in the house. In addition, you could put your own security of occupation at risk if your son divorced or he or his wife faced bankruptcy, bringing what was your home into the sights of either an ex-daughter-in-law or creditors, depending upon the case. This is because the gift of the house, while ineffective for tax-saving purposes, would transfer the legal ownership of the house to your son – in these circumstances, the worst of all worlds. So please do take legal advice before taking such a drastic and risky step.

such as divorce or employment disputes. However, as you state your family dispute is commercial, my recommendation is to find a mediator who is experienced in commercial dispute resolution. It is not essential to choose a legally trained mediator, but it is important in a commercial case to have a mediator who has experience of dispute resolution. If you have a solicitor acting for you, they will guide you as to your choice of mediator. If not, you will find via Google that you have many options. Many, but not all mediators have legal experience as solicitors or

barristers. Some solicitor and barrister mediators remain connected to their solicitor’s firm or barristers’ chambers. Other mediators practice independently or as part of a mediation panel, such as the well-known In Place of Strife, from where I also practice as a mediator (mediate.co.uk). The important thing is for you to pick a mediator you are confident will be suitably skilled to facilitate the settlement of your dispute. A good mediator will not mind you making an approach to them to discuss their experience and, importantly, their style of mediation. Another consideration is, of course, cost – and as with all professionals, mediators’ fees vary greatly.
