‘Moment of shame’
Jeremy Corbyn risks yet more resignations from his own MPs unless he gets a grip on antisemitism within his ranks, writes Adam Decker. That was the message from party insiders this week after Luciana Berger was among eight Labour MPs to quit to establish their own independent grouping in Parliament. Berger, who jumped ship alongside Chuka Umunna, Mike Gapes, Ann Coffey, Chris Leslie, Gavin Shuker, Angela Smith and two days later Joan Ryan, said: “I cannot remain in a party that I have come to the sickening conclusion is institutionally antisemitic. It was nearly a year ago that we saw the unprecedented event of a minority community – the Jewish community – taking to Parliament Square to demonstrate against the Labour Party. “And yet since then, despite the mountain of evidence, we have only seen the situation of racism against Jewish people get worse. The leadership has willfully and repeatedly failed to address hatred against Jewish people within its ranks. I am leaving behind a culture of bullying, bigotry and intimidation.” The MPs said they will continue to serve in parliament under the newlyformed Independent Group. The eight were joined on Wednesday by three Conservative MPs, Anna Soubry, Heidi Allen and Sarah Wollaston. This represents the biggest split in the party since four MPs, known as The Gang of Four, left to form the Social Democratic Party in the 1980s. There are suggestions that as many as 36 Labour MPs had been considering a split. Corbyn said: “I am disappointed these MPs have felt unable to continue to work together for the Labour policies that inspired millions at the last election and saw us increase our vote by the largest share since 1945. “Labour won people over on a programme for the many not the few – redistributing wealth and power, taking vital resources into public ownership, investing in every region and nation, and tackling climate change.

“The Tories are bungling Brexit while Labour has set out a unifying and credible alternative plan. When millions face the misery of Universal Credit, rising crime, homelessness and poverty, now more than ever is the time to bring people together to build a better future for us all.” Jewish Labour Movement said: “Countless Jewish Labour Party members have resigned in these last few years in protest at the abject failure of the party to address a growing culture of antisemitism, obfuscation and denial. It will be for our members to decide what they, and we, do next.” Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl

said: “In a searing indictment of the leadership, Luciana Berger MP and Mike Gapes MP accused the party of being institutionally antisemitic. “In the light of the horrific abuse aimed at Jewish MPs, we stand in solidarity with all those who have been targeted. Labour has failed to deal with antisemitism since the Jewish community’s Enough is Enough demonstration called on the Labour leadership to act against this racism. “This is a moment of great shame for the Labour Party and a tragedy for the thousands of Jews who have supported the party for generations.” Editorial comment, page 18
Around one-third of British voters think Jeremy Corbyn is an antisemite, while 60 percent say he has been “incompetent” in handling the party’s Jew-hate crisis. Only four percent think the leader of the Opposition has been “very competent” in handling antisemitism within Labour, according to the YouGov poll, commissioned by the Jewish Labour Movement and published in The Sunday Times.
DUGHER: PARTY I KNEW DOESN’T EXIST A former Labour shadow cabinet vice-chair and MP has quit the party and has admitted to being close to tears over Jeremy Corbyn’s failure to tackle antisemitism. Michael Dugher, a former aide to Gordon Brown, said: “It pains me to see what Labour has become.” Dugher, a party member for nearly 30 years and an MP for seven, wrote: “The Labour Party I joined no longer exists.”
Israel ‘funds JVL DENIES NAZI Top JLM official splitters’ slur SLUR ‘BRILLIANT’ quits in ‘shame’ A Labour MP has apologised after suggesting that former colleagues who broke away from Jeremy Corbyn’s party may have had Israeli backing. High Peak MP Ruth George “unreservedly and wholeheartedly” apologised and said she had no intention of “invoking a conspiracy theory”. The seven – including Jewish MP Luciana Berger – blamed Labour’s failure to tackle anti-Semitism as one of their reasons for leaving. George acknowledged her comment had been “illthought out” and “poorly worded”. A Labour Party spokesman said: “It’s right that Ruth George has apologised for these offensive remarks. The Whips Office is reminding Ruth George of the conduct expected of her.” George’s earlier Facebook

comment suggested that “support from the State of Israel, which supports both Conservative and Labour ‘Friends of Israel’ of which Luciana was chair is possible and I would not condemn those who suggest it, especially when the group’s financial backers are not being revealed”. It’s important for democracy to know the financial backers for any political group or policy.”
A Jewish group sympathetic to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has denied its spokeswoman described as “brilliant” a speaker’s link between support for Zionism and support for Nazism. Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) media officer Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi was reacting to comments from Sabby Saggall, the Jewish chair of Camden Palestine Solidarity Campaign, at a panel Q&A session she chaired to accompany a film screening in London on 10 February. Saggall referred to “the contradiction at the heart of Zionism”, saying: “Zionism… is supported by – to the hilt – by western imperialist forces. It is exactly those same socialpolitical forces that actually, in the final analysis, were responsible for the destruction of six million Jews.”
His closing remark was to urge the audience to attend an anti-racism march, to which she said “brilliant”. A spokesperson for JVL Watch, which described itself as “keeping an eye on JLV” said: “The video shows Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi calling an evil and baseless fantasy about Jews, the Holocaust and Israel as ‘brilliant’. “Her use of the word in reaction to comments that included this vile conspiracy myth is sadly no surprise. JVL is a tiny group of people who exist to whitewash antisemitism.” Wimborne-Idrissi said: “I applauded the contribution from Sabby Saggal, who explained attacks on Corbyn were a threat to the entire antiracist movement, and ended by calling for support for a unified anti-racist demonstration. That is what I said was brilliant.”
A senior member of Jewish Labour Movement this week announced his resignation from the party in an open letter to Jeremy Corbyn. Published on Medium, former Labour official Adam Langleben wrote: “My wife and I are having our first child in two weeks time. One day my son may ask me what I did to stop you from becoming prime minister. I can no longer look my family and friends in the face without complete shame.” Langleben said: “I joined the Labour Party 13 years ago as a student on the left of the party, a place I have remained throughout my time in Labour . “It has now become clear that under your leadership, the party has been corrupted and indoctrinated by people who are authoritarian in their approach to politics, encourage democratic structures that lead

to bullying mob rule, and above all else – are racist towards Jews – which may well be a result of the approach of the two latter philosophies.” He also called on Corbyn to “take full responsibility” for the rise in antisemitism in the party, adding: “You, Seumas Milne, Karie Murphy, Len McClusky, the bullies at the top, have allowed this culture of institutionalised antisemitism to develop and grow.”

AFTER 99 YEARS, JLM CONSIDERS ITS FUTURE The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) has called an emergency meeting to discuss its future in the party after the resignation of several senior figures – amid calls for ties to be severed. Two executive members, Adam Langleben and Joe Goldberg, both former councillors, followed Luciana Berger, the group’s parliamentary chair out the door on Monday night, in protest at the party’s handling of the antisemitism crisis. Now JLM secretary Peter Mason has written to all members announcing extraordinary general meetings to be held concurrently in London and Manchester on 6 March “to decide collectively where we go from here”. JLM is the party’s only Jewish affiliate and is due to celebrate 100 years in that position next year. But Mason wrote “far too little has been achieved for the party to be able to claim in all honesty that it upholds the zero tolerance environment promised”, adding that Berg-

er’s decision was the “culmination of the same dilemma that each of us has been forced to contend with for a very long time. As members discuss in private and share on social media their own responses to this very same dilemma, setting out their reasons for staying or leaving, it is only right that we come together as a movement to decide collectively where we go from here.” He added: “At the EGM, we will hear from Jewish parliamentarians, and allow members the opportunity to discuss how we move forward.” One senior member told
Jewish News they didn’t support disaffiliation but expected some members to make a push to sever ties with Labour. This would mean the organisation – which also affiliates with the Zionist Federation and World Zionist Labour Movement – would no longer send delegates to annual conference and other key gatherings. Another member, Joe Millis, said: “Now it’s as clear as day that the leadership is at best tone deaf regarding antisemitism, and at worst is anti-Semitic, its time for JLM to disaffiliate.”

News / Luciana Berger interview
‘Why now enough re After this week’s landmark decision to break away from the Labour Party alongside six other MPs, Luciana Berger tells Jewish News why she waited until now to quit – and what the future holds Interview by JACK MENDEL
Jack Mendel (JM): I want to start by understanding how you finally reached the point when you finally had to quit the party. Luciana Berger MP (LB): It’s been a very, very difficult decision, very painful, but a necessary one. I’ve made the decision today, along with a number of my colleagues, because I felt it was the right thing to do. I could have carried on, ‘business as usual’, but I didn’t think the status quo was good enough and that’s why I decided to resign from the Labour Party today. JM: What toll has it taken on you personally and your family over the past couple of years? LB: It’s been quite challenging. It’s not a secret that I’ve seen six people convicted of antisemitic acts towards me over the last few years, and I’ve done everything I possibly can to stand up and speak up for my constituents and, particularly most recently, since the referendum on Brexit. Liverpool’s going to be absolutely devastated by Brexit, and I’ve been very involved in that, and additionally on the antisemitism front. So I’ve been very active, obviously seeking to address issues of antisemitism within the Labour Party in the wake of the unprecedented event of the demonstration in Parliament square. We’re coming up to a year since that happened and, in my view, we’ve only seen the situation get worse, whether that’s the fight we’ve had to have for months in order to see the IHRA definition adopted by the party in full with all of its examples – which, even at the last moment, there were efforts to seek to undermine it. It was very distressing. It didn’t seem that there was a day that went past where there wasn’t another story or front page about various activities and events that the leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, had attended or spoken at. Most significantly were the comments that were captured where he said that British Jews didn’t get irony, [which were] just so offensive and indicative of the problem. There have been a catalogue of cases, and most recently on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day, which resulted in individuals receiving a reminder of the rules, not even a warning [despite] having made antisemitic comments. That doesn’t, in any way, shape or form, chime with the commitment to being a party that takes a zero tolerance approach to antisemitism. It’s been a very, very difficult decision, very painful, but a necessary one. JM: During Monday’s press conference, you said Labour was institutionally antisemitic, but didn’t go as far as saying Jeremy Corbyn is antisemitic. Will you now say that? LB: It’s for Jeremy Corbyn to tell the country what his views are. I can only look at and hold the leadership to account for the gulf between lots of warm words – because any time the party is asked about it, we get the standard statement ‘we’re committed to contending with this issue’ – and the reality and the facts on the ground. The latter paints a very different picture. I appreciate I follow this a lot more closely than most – and, from my own personal experience as well, the combination of which has led me to say that it’s not about just one individual. The party as a whole has not adequately contended with this issue even in the wake of the ‘Enough is Enough’
demonstration and that’s why I did what I did today. JM: You said on Five Live earlier that Jeremy Corbyn hadn’t spoken to you since late 2017. Given his lack of contact, why now? LB: I was invited to a meeting towards the end of last week for the first time. I wasn’t able to make that meeting, but that was the first time in well over a year. JM: Given he hasn’t had direct contact with you in over a year, why resign now? LB: I’ve certainly raised this issue in very public forums that have a direct link to Jeremy, the parliamentary Labour party I’ve spoken to or moved my own motions. I’ve done it in the presence of well over a hundred colleagues on a number of times. It’s not like my representations won’t have got back to him; this is the responsibility of the entire shadow cabinet, not just one individual. There are different facets, there are different organs of the party and its governing body. I’ve endeavoured to speak to all of those. JM: Was there one particular event that triggered your decision? LB: I can’t point to one thing but, clearly as I’ve laid out, there’s a catalogue, an extensive catalogue of events that have happened, particularly over the course of the past year that have made my membership of the Labour Party untenable. JM: Have ties between Labour and the Jewish community been taken to the point of no return? LB: It’s up to the communal organisations and bodies to arrive at their own conclusions. I can only make a decision on behalf of myself. JM: Should Labour members stay and fight or join you? LB: These are very personal decisions, whether people do it as an MP, a councillor, a member or in whatever capacity they make that decision. It’s for individuals to arrive at their own conclusions and at the time that is right for them. It’s not for me to determine or dictate what they do. I have made my choice today. I feel I have done everything within my power to fight this issue. I haven’t held back in speaking out. I’ve been outspoken at every moment. I’ve tried different avenues. Most recently with the motion… that we saw that was brought by my colleagues, members of the parliamentary committee, colleagues I supported and was involved in just in the past few weeks to demand full disclosure of all the details of exactly what has happened; particularly in the past 11 months, and also we saw in the week of that motion, which was unanimously supported – no one spoke against it; it was a polite request for information to be disclosed on different issues; what the party’s approach is when it comes to a duty of care. The motion called for someone from leadership, it didn’t specify who, to come and present a response and a written report, and yet we still didn’t get a full disclosure of the details... the cloak of freedom of information was used. Let’s be very clear: we were not asking for individual names. We were just looking for numbers, and now lots are disputing the numbers. In particular, there is the issue of what action we

ally is enough’ have seen happen. And all these people just got a reminder of the rules, not a warning. That in my view does not chime in any way with a party that is supposed to adopt a zero tolerance approach to antisemitism. So that is why I made my decision now. I feel I fought very, very hard. I have done that in the wake of standing outside parliament to demonstrate against my own party, to say enough is enough. I’ve done everything I’ve done subsequent to that. And now enough really is enough. JM: Have you had any contact with the Labour leadership, Jeremy Corbyn or John McDonnell, in the last 24 hours or the aftermath of it? LB: No. I believe I might have a letter, but I haven’t seen it yet. JM: Moving forward, the new party… LB: So, the first step is that we’ve established a new independent group of MPs. JM: So, it’s not a formal party? LB: No, we are on a journey to listen to the country, to see what the response is, to see what people want, it’s not for us to dictate... I would anticipate that we do become a party, but we’ll wait and see.
JM: Would you consider leadership of that? LB: We haven’t announced any roles or responsibilities; we’re yet to have an inaugural meeting. We might become a party if it transpires that’s what the British people want. So far, we have a website, theindependent.group. It keeps crashing as there’s so much interest. Gauging from the response of my constituents, which has been on the whole very, very positive and supportive, the response I’m getting in my inbox, on social media, and from the country, is that there is an appetite for something that represents the majority of this country who are currently unrepresented. We see the major parties that essentially gravitate towards the extremes of those spectrums, whether that’s the Conservatives, who have been hijacked by the European Research Group, the Labour party, which is attached to the hard left, or the Lib Dems, who have no credibility. Speaking to the values we set out today are the values we hold dear. Equality for all, opportunity for all, anti-racism, social justice. UJS (Union of Jewish Students) led me to join the Labour Party, those values that I hold dear, which currently have no place in that party. JM: You were chair of Jewish Labour Movement (JLM). Can you continue now? LB: I genuinely don’t know the answer to that.
JM: What do you see as the future of JLM? LB: The JLM is a democratic organisation, and it’s due to have an AGM in the next few weeks. I’d anticipate this might be a topic of conversation. The members determine and decide among themselves what they believe it should do. JM: Do you understand some of the anger within the Jewish community that you stayed in the party so long? Many left and urged others to leave, too. What’s your message to them? LB: This is a very personal decision. People will arrive at a decision for themselves when the time is right. I feel it has been important to stay and fight, that’s what I’ve endeavoured to do. Why am I in public office? To effect change and make a difference. I’ve stayed as long as I’ve felt able to try and effect change and make a difference to this issue of antisemitism. The Jewish community historically... our number one political home was Labour. I never anticipated that, in 20 years, it would ever come to this, that I would have to leave the Labour Party. The party is supposed to espouse the values that led you to join it in the first place, so it’s not an easy decision. It’s a very personal decision, and I don’t berate anyone who made the decision previously, or who might not make it now or in the future.
LABOUR SPLIT HATTON LET BACK INTO LABOUR... Derek Hatton, the firebrand former deputy leader of Liverpool City who was expelled for membership of left-wing group Militant, has been formally readmitted to the Labour Party after 34 years, it has been reported. Hatton’s return was rubber-stamped last week following a meeting of the party’s disputes panel, which is overseen by the ruling national executive committee, according to the Daily Mirror. He previously claimed to have been accepted back last September, but party sources said at the time that he was not a member. Hatton, 71, was originally expelled by the then leader Neil Kinnock for membership of the left-wing Militant Tendency. He tweeted in 2012: “Jewish people with any sense of humanity need to start speaking out publicly against the ruthless murdering being carried out by Israel!”
... & GALLOWAY WANTS TO REJOIN Deorge Galloway claims he has applied to rejoin Labour, but the party denies ever receiving such an application. Speaking to Sky News’s Niall Paterson on Wednesday, the former MP revealed he had applied to rejoin the party and said his expulsion had been “unjust”. He said: “I have written to the Labour Party general secretary asking that my expulsion by Mr Blair over the Iraq War in 2003 should be rescinded.” However, a Labour Party spokesperson later told Jewish News: “No such application has been received by the party.” In the television interview, Galloway also described recent Labour Party defections over antisemitism as “pure Goebbelsian propaganda”, adding: “Repeat a lie often enough and some people might believe it.”

Gardiner: Sorry, we let you down Labour frontbencher Barry Gardiner has apologised to British Jews on behalf of the party, saying “we have let you down” during a House of Commons debate on antisemitism yesterday. The shadow secretary of state for international trade made the emotive admission as Labour’s own MPs challenged him on Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership in tense exchanges, during which it was revealed that former Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary Lord Falconer had agreed to help Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) deal with the scourge. Gardiner also revealed that he had lodged a formal complaint with Labour general secretary Jennie Formby about hard-left militant Derek Hatton and tweets he has posted that suggested all Jews were responsible for the actions of the Israeli Government. Gardiner said antisemitism was “a unique evil” and described how he visited Auschwitz-Birkenau shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and how it “etched itself into my con-

sciousness… That antisemitism is on the rise should appal us. We have to act to stop this disease poisoning our society.” He said there were 23 antisemitic incidents in Gardiner’s own Brent North constituency, which includes JFS, in the past year, adding: “This is the lived reality of the Jewish community.” He then asked: “How can it be that we [Labour] are struggling so badly to eradicate antisemitism from our
own membership... No party has a monopoly on virtue, but in Labour we are learning a bitter lesson.” He added: “For all the strength and passion we have derived from the mass influx of new members, we have not had adequate procedures in place to act swiftly and decisively to react to that small minority who have expressed sometimes ignorant, but often vicious, dangerous and vile antisemitic views”. He continued: “On behalf of my Party, I want to publicly apologise to the Jewish community that we have let you down. We know it. We are trying to do better. “We are trying to become the Party we always aspired to be. We will not stop working until we once again become a safe political home to people from the Jewish community, as from every other.” Smeeth added that “any other leader of the Labour Party would have instructed [antisemites] to be expelled” but Gardiner did not agree, saying it was not a decision for Corbyn but for the NEC.

Labour councillor defects A Brighton councillor defected to the Conservaties yesterday, citing antisemitism and making her new party the largest on the seaside town’s council, writes Joe Millis. In an interview with BBC Brighton, Meadows – who is not Jewish – said she had been subjected to “18 months of antisemitism and
Chabloz registered as Labour supporter Convicted Holocaust denier Alison Chabloz signed up as a £3 registered supporter of the Labour Party, Jewish News can reveal. A source involved in the compliance unit during the 2015 election campaign has confirmed Chabloz signed up but said the revisionist was later blacklisted by the party after her vile comments emerged. Chabloz declared loyalty to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in several blog posts. In an entry entitled “My Quenelle is a massive ‘Up
yours!’ dedicated to my abusers” from 2015, she wrote: “I like many others hope Corbyn becomes Labour leader and that after so many years we will start to see some real opposition in the House of Commons. Sadly, as we have seen
during another recent smear campaign of Jeremy Corbyn, eloquent debate seems out of the question.” In another post from 2015, she compared the media’s coverage of Corbyn to that of the convicted antisemite and Holocaust denier Dieudonné. Chabloz was convicted of three counts of sending by a public communications network an offensive, indecent or menacing message or material after a trial at Westminster Magistrates Court last May. She lost an appeal last week.
Young Labour ‘disgrace’ Nearly 300 Labour activists have signed an open letter calling for change after several “offensive, rude, and borderline antisemitic” messages were sent from Young Labour’s Twitter account, which were condemned by its Jewish chair. Young Labour drew criticism over a message sent from its Twitter account celebrating the resignation of an eighth Labour MP, who joined the Independent Group. Miriam Mirwitch, the chair of Young Labour, has “utterly condemned” and denied sending the since-deleted tweet, which read: “Joan Ryan gone – Palestine lives”. Mirwitch said: “This tweet is entirely inappropriate. I do not support

Meadows told the Argus newspaper: “I am delighted I have been so warmly accepted into the Conservative family, having spent most of my life as a Labour member and councillor. “Leaving the Labour Party was not an easy decision for me, but today’s Labour Party is not one I recognise, nor the one I joined many years ago. “I want to continue to represent residents in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean in the most effective way possible and I believe to achieve this it has to be as a Conservative Party councillor.”

The UK already gives the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) more than £60 million annually but Middle East Minister Alistair Burt recently said he was “concerned about the worsening situation in the Gaza Strip”.
Nursery wins appeal over firing teacher The Employment Appeal Tribunal has ruled that a Jewish worker at a Chabad nursery in Hendon who was dismissed for cohabiting with her boyfriend did not suffer direct or indirect discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief. Zelda De Groen had worked as a teacher and team leader at the Gan Menachem Kindergarten in Hendon for four years before she was dismissed with immediate effect in July 2016. In a letter detailing the “allegations”, she was told: “You have presented yourself in such a way as to prove you have acted or are acting in contravention of the Nursery’s culture, ethos and religious beliefs. “Through such damage your disclosure has potentially led to financial detriment of the Nursery and loss of income on the basis parents have threatened to remove their children from the business to prevent them being in your care.” In 2017, an Employment Tribunal found that she had been discriminated against on the grounds of sex, religion and belief, and had suffered

harassment. John Bowers QC, acting for De Groen, said the ruling “has wide implications for the Orthodox community in that it cannot insist on teachers living the lifestyle it would want to instil in its children”. However, lawyers acting for Gan Menachem against De Groen challenged the 2017 decision and appealed in November last year. In a ruling handed down last week, the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) struck down the original Tribunal’s ruling that De Groen had been discriminated against on the grounds of religion or belief. It also did not allow an appeal
against the original ruling that she had suffered sex discrimination and harassment. The original tribunal in 2017 found that De Groen was discriminated against because of her lack of belief in Orthodox Judaism. It also said she was treated as she was because of the religious beliefs of the nursery. The Equality Act 2010 lets an employer demand an employee has “certain characteristics” if it is an “occupational requirement” but the original tribunal said this should be a job requirement, and “lifestyles and personal beliefs are almost always excluded from the scope of an occupational requirement”. But in his ruling, Mr Justice Swift said the tribunal “had incorrectly concluded that an employer acting because of its own religion or belief discriminated against its employees”. He added: “There was no sufficient evidential basis for any conclusion that the appellant discriminated against the respondent because of her religion or belief.”

News / Ofsted report / Memorial support
Pupils ‘pinched and smacked’ Pupils at a strictly-Orthodox boys’ primary school in Stamford Hill have told Ofsted inspectors that teachers and staff “manage behaviour” by pinching, smacking and slapping children. The damning details of “inappropriate physical contact” were recorded by inspectors in their report, published this week, following their unannounced visit to the 1,200-pupil Talmud Torah Yetev Lev last month. Inspectors also found the school to be ‘Inadequate’ in every category, and noted “an area filled with rubbish and large holes in the playground”. “Of greatest concern is that pupils
reported that physical sanctions are adopted by staff in the event of pupil misbehaviour, including cheek pinching, smacking and slapping,” they said of the Satmar school. Inspectors’ safeguarding concerns have now been referred to Hackney Council, whose officers will consider the report. Ofsted said “staff use inappropriate methods of discipline harmful to physical and emotional wellbeing”, adding that the use of smacking and slapping for punishment was “of significant concern”. The school, which is located on Cazenove Road, teaches boys as young as two and charges £10,000 for early years children.
Elsewhere, inspectors described the school’s leadership as “inadequate”, oversight as “limited”, resources as “poor” and the curriculum as “narrow”, while recording pupils standing on tables and running through corridors. Talmud Torah Yetev Lev School in Stamford Hill In addition, inspectors said the school had more than not notified the Department for 1,200 pupils on its roll, but that “this Education that this building is in is more than twice the number the use”. On the plus side, they said school is registered to take”. The the religious studies curriculum owner has bought another building “encourages pupils’ strong moral to prevent overcrowding, but “has values and contributes well to their
personal development”, adding that “pupils behave well during lessons” and “appear keen to learn”. In the past year, Ofsted has been accused by Orthodox school leaders of being part of a “secularist plot”, following a series of downgrades for reasons including’ unwillingness to teach children about people who identify as different sexualities and genders. During their visit last month, inspectors were told not to ask pupils about characteristics protected under the Equality Act, adding that religious studies take up all but 90 minutes of lesson time. The school has failed to respond to numerous requests for comment.
150 MPS BACK WESTMINSTER HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL More than 150 MPs have signed a letter in support of the planned Holocaust memorial outside Parliament, saying it will “stand as a testimony” to fighting hatred. In all, 171 politicians from all major political parties have backed the National Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre, which is to be built in Victoria Tower Gardens,
Westminster. Their support comes after the Royal Parks, which looks after the gardens, criticised the planning application for the £100 million project, which is being considered by Westminster Council. The charity hit out at the application over “the impact it will have on a popular public amenity space
in an area of the capital with few public parks”. Written by co-chairs of the AllParty Parliamentary Group on Holocaust Memorial, MPs Ian Austin and Bob Blackman, the letter urges the council’s planning committee to back the application. Signatories include from the Conservatives: Dominic Raab, Nicky Morgan and
Robert Halfon, as well as Labour’s Emily Thornberry, Yvette Cooper, Barry Gardiner and Lord Dubs, as well as the Scottish National Party’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford and Green MP Caroline Lucas. They say the memorial is necessary, “as the Holocaust moves from living memory into history” and as antisemitism rises in society.

THE MISSION
Israel’s first moon mission will conduct scientific measurements that will give the world a greater insight into the lunar magnetic field. The Earth’s magnetic field is much stronger than that of the Moon. It protects us from solar radiation and cosmic rays, and is created from deep inside the Earth, where our swirling hot iron core creates electric currents, which in turn creating magnetic fields. Some experts believe the Moon once had the same ‘dynamo effect’. The Moon still has an iron core today, but it is small and cold, creating very little by way of a magnetic field, yet lunar rocks are magnetic at different levels. “If we can measure the magnetism of these rocks, we can begin to understand how and when this magnetism arose,” says Professor Oded Aharonson of the Weizmann Institute, who heads the mission’s international science team. The landing craft will measure the magnetic fields in ancient volcanic rocks, similar to basalts on Earth, to see if their intensity matches that sug-

Israel’s lunar landing / Special Report gested by the core-dynamo theory. It may help scientists work out how long ago the dynamo was active. The measurements may show that at least some of the Moon’s magnetic field is due to the bombardment of asteroids, or even from magnetic material that originated in the asteroids themselves. Aharonson says the short 15-minute descent to surface of the Moon will be critical. This is
when the readings of the magnetic field will increase. Measuring this increase, plus any changes as it passes over different areas, will be crucial to understanding its source.
THE MINDS
The project is the world’s first commercial and non-state moon exploration mission, an independent initiative started by the three young entrepreneurs who founded
Space engineers hope to inspire a new generation of scientists
SpaceIL. Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Winetraub – a space engineer, a cyber security expert and a drone maker – had the idea to land the first Israeli space vehicle on the Moon in the place all good ideas arrive – the bar! Over a beer in Holon, south of Tel Aviv, they decided that not only was it possible, but that it would inspire a new generation of students to study science and technology. “As the alcohol level in our blood rose, we got more and more determined to do this,” said Winetraub, in an interview with From The Grapevine. “And it never faded away.” Although Bash and Winetraub later stepped back, Damari remained on the management team. An engineer and entrepreneur, he describes himself as “a proud geek” who began computer programming at the age of six and wrote his “first computer virus aged 11”. He later served in the IDF’s elite and highly secretive cyber unit in an intelligence role. They entered Israel into the $20 million Google Lunar X Prize competition to build, launch and land an unmanned spacecraft on the Moon. SpaceIL was the only Israeli representative. In October 2015, they signed the launch contract – a “ticket to

the Moon” – and, in January 2017, became one of five finalists. But the competition ended with no winners in March 2018, with Google ending their sponsorship. Despite that, the trio said they would continue working toward their goal. Contemplating “the day after” the landing, the SpaceIL founders said the point was “to enhance the quality of education, to close educational gaps in Israeli society and to provide the graduates of the educational system with the tools they will need in order to thrive in the 21st century”.
THE MONEY
The cost of planning and building
the spacecraft was $100 million (£771,000), most of it contributed by private donors. Contributing $40m (£31m) is SpaceIL’s 88-year-old president, the South African-born Israeli philanthropist Morris Kahn. “This is big,” he said this week. “If you can prove a small group of people can get together and land on the Moon, you will really have created something for space exploration.” He added: “I travel round with Buzz Aldrin. I remember where I was when he landed on the Moon. I believe when Israel lands on the Moon, every Jew will remember where he was. I want to get the message across to the world, that Israel is doing something great.” Other big donors include American casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miri, IsraeliCanadian real estate billionaire Sylvan Adams, Israeli plastics magnate Sami Sagol, American philanthropist Lynn Schusterman, and property developer Stephen Grand and his wife Nancy. The spacecraft will be launched on a Falcon 9 rocket made by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX, from Cape Canaveral in Florida. After multiple orbits around the Earth, it will arrive at its destination two months later.

THRONES STAR LANDS ROLE IN ISRAELI FILM
Lena Headey, the English actress best known for portraying the diabolical ruler Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, is going to star in an Israeli film. Headey, 45, will have a major role in Gunpowder Milkshake, which was written and will be directed by Israelis Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado. Karen Gillan, who has appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Who, and Guardians of the Galaxy, has also signed on to the film.
HEROIN ADDICT JAILED FOR KILLING SURVIVOR A heroin addict has been handed a 15-year prison sentence for killing a 100-year-old Nazi prison camp survivor in a street robbery in Derby. Artur Waszkiewicz, 40, of Hilary Road in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, attacked Polish-born widow Zofija Kaczan from behind as she walked to church – knocking her to the ground and leaving her bleeding in the road on 28 May last year. Ms Kaczan died from pneumonia on 6 June, a condition brought on by her injuries, which included a broken neck. Waszkiewicz was unanimously convicted of manslaughter and robbery by a jury at Derby Crown Court.
The names of the men and women murdered by the Iraqi regime 50 years ago rang out in the crowded congregation of Bevis Marks on Tuesday night, writes Jenni Frazer. And many of those in the centuries-old synagogue, the families of the dead, wept as they paid tribute to their loved ones, hanged, murdered while in custody, or simply missing, their fates unknown. In a special, touching ceremony, held with the support of David Dangoor and the Exilarch’s Foundation, the Sephardi community in the UK gathered at Bevis Marks to light candles for those who had died, purged by the Iraqi authorities in 1969, just two years after Israel’s great victory in the Six Day War. One of the key results of the killings — which began in January 1969 with the public hangings of 15 men, nine of whom were Jews — was the fleeing of the majority of the Iraqi Jewish community. Many of them began new lives in Britain. In an emotional keynote address, Joseph Dweck, Senior Rabbi of the S&P Sephardi community, recalled the glory days of the Iraqi Jewish community, the cornerstone of diaspora Jewish scholarship for hundreds of

years, and “part of the national psyche of the Jewish people”. For centuries, he said, “we not only survived in Arab lands, we thrived”. He spoke of the “glory and grandeur of Jewish life in that country”, but, while acknowledging the pain and suffering of the loss of that life, urged the community to “stand taller, not slouch, be stronger, not sad. Lift up your hearts”. The evening began with a candle lit
by the S&P Sephardi community president, Sabah Zubeida, in memory of Ezra Naji Sion Hesqel Zilkha, and his own father, Daoud Sassoon Zubeida. The 27 January 1969 hangings had been “the beginning of the end” for Iraqi Jewry, he said, a “terrifying time, in which Jews were the easiest target”. The bodies of the nine Jews hanged on that January day 50 years ago were returned to the Jewish community for burial. But many more,
who died at the hands of the regime in prison or were simply rounded up and killed, were never seen again, never buried — but always mourned. In tears, Samira Elias lit a candle in memory of her brother Hesqel Salih Hesqel and her sister Suad Kashkush; Faiza Saigh lit one in memory of her brother, Daoud Ghali Yadgar, and Nouri Dallal lit a candle in the name of his brother Daoud Hesqel Barukh Dallal. Other candles were lit by Chef Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who recited Psalm 137; Rabbi Abraham Levy, who had, as a young man, led a demonstration against the hangings outside the Iraqi Embassy in London, but who today also rejoiced in the contribution made by Iraqi Jews to Britain’s Jewish community; Bishop Graham Kings, representing the Church of England; Lord Pickles, the UK’s special envoy for post-Holocaust issues; and Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev, who spoke of Iraqi antisemitism and its echoes today, in “vile tropes on social media, relating to dual loyalties and undue influences”. A memorial prayer was led by the rabbi of Lauderdale Road Synagogue, Rabbi Israel Elias, while Rabbi Dweck recited Kaddish.

The memorial to Karl Marx in Highgate Cemetery has been vandalised for the second time in two weeks, with references to the “Bolshevik Holocaust” spray-painted across the monument. Phrases such as “architect of genocide” and “doctrine of hate” were scrawled across the listed marble plaque and reported by Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust on Saturday. The words “66,000,000 dead” were also prominent. The political graffiti, which included the dates 1917 and 1953 – key dates in the Soviet Union’s history – were the second attack in as many weeks, after vandals took a hammer to the memorial earlier this month. Jewish philosopher Marx, whose maternal grandfather was a Dutch rabbi, was a German-born political scientist whose critiques of capitalism gave birth to communism. He died a “stateless person” in London in 1883. His tomb was listed as a Grade I monument in 1999.

Report warns of satanic-Nazi threat An influential annual report on extremism in the UK has warned that the destruction of the far-right group National Action last year has ushered in a new unit inspired by “the world’s most extreme Satanic-Nazi group”. Hope Not Hate, whose State of Hate report was published this week, warned that the Sonnenkrieg Division was “the most worrying of them all”, after three young male members were arrested in December. Last year, 12 National Action members were tried and imprisoned, including Wayne Bell, described as “a violent psychopath with a particular penchant for threatening Jews”, who he said were “destructive” and “vile”. He was sentenced to four years and
three months in May. The Sonnenkrieg (Sun War) Division describes itself as the UK offshoot of the Atomwaffen (Atomic Weapons) Division, an antisemitic American terrorist organisation whose members have been found guilty of five counts of murder. Hope Not Hate said the resurgence of the far-right in part flowed from funding from the US and warned that a strong showing for farright parties in European elections this spring would “give a boost to the far-right in the UK”. The far-right is an umbrella term describing those whose political outlook is seen in cultural terms, including race, identity and immi-
gration, and whose beliefs centre on nationalism and the exceptionalism of a race or country. “The far right is successfully tapping into the political rage and discontent that is prevalent in society,” the organisation said. “A narrative of betrayal and traitors increasingly dominates the far right’s discourse, with much of their anger focused on MPs – and female MPs in particular.” Far-right activists have been emboldened by the election of populist far-right leaders around the world, including Brazil’s new president Jair Bolsonaro, who has said he would “rather [his son] die in a car accident than turn up dating some guy”. Hope Not Hate said Britain had
big problems. Online, five of the 10 most followed far-right activists in the world are based here, the report noting a “continued rising trend in traffic to far-right websites”
by Brits. Authors of the 100-page report also noted antisemitism in the Labour Party, describing leader Jeremy Corbyn as “central” to the problem.
JN WRITER ‘RACIALLY ATTACKED’ ICKE BARRED FROM OZ LBC radio presenter and Jewish News columnist Maajid Nawaz has said he does not “harbour hate” for the man who “racially attacked” him outside a central London theatre. Nawaz, who has been a staunch critic of Labour for its handling of the antisemitism row, said a white male attacked him from behind outside the Soho Theatre on Monday night.
In a series of tweets, he said the man racially abused him and then hit him in the face with “maybe a signet ring”. Nawaz also shared a photo of his face, showing a cut to his forehead (pictured). Nawaz said he had returned home from hospital “after having my wound glued up”. He thanked the Soho Theatre for “identifying the racist assailant on their CCTV footage”.
Conspiracy theorist David Icke has had his Australian visa revoked. He was due to visit the country for a speaking tour in March; however he will not now be able to enter the country. Icke has labeled Judaism an “incredibly racist religion” and wants Holocaust denial to be taught in schools. He has also claimed that “Rothschild Zionists” secretly dominate the world
and that Jews bankrolled Adolf Hitler. Dvir Abramovich, chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission, who called on Immigration Minister David Coleman to revoke Icke’s visa, said: “Bravo Minister Coleman for heeding our call and for declaring in a loud voice that antisemites and Holocaust deniers will never find a home in Australia.”

HUNGARY EMBASSY LINK TO JERUSALEM
Hungary will open a trade office in Jerusalem that has “diplomatic status,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced in Israel’s capital city. Following the meeting between Orban and Netanyahu, Orban told reporters that “I just informed the prime minister that the Hungarian government decided to open a trade representation here with diplomatic status. So we will have an official presence in Jerusalem as well.” Netanyahu thanked Orban “for extending the embassy to Jerusalem.”
AUSTRALIAN LEADER REINFORCES BONDS
Australia’s prime minister and opposition leader reinforced the bond between Israel and Australia in back-to-back addresses to parliament marking 70 years of friendship with Israel. Israel’s ambassador to Australia, Mark Sofer, was in parliament to hear the leaders speak of the relationship between the two countries. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that Israel is “a beacon of democracy in the Middle East.” He said that though Australia chaired the 1947 U.N. Committee which voted to divide the territory of Mandate Palestine, the country will be “standing by Israel in the face of biased and unfair targeting of Israel in the U.N. General Assembly.”
Albanian Muslim heroes celebrated British Jews have learned about the heroism of Albanian Muslims who saved the country’s Jews during the Nazi occupation, after the Board of Deputies hosted a Yad Vashem exhibition on the subject last Sunday. Albanian Ambassador Qirjako Qirko told the Jewish audience that “the history of protection of the Jewish population in Albania is exceptional”, adding that it was “an excellent example of humanity and a lesson for future generations”. He said: “Albanians chose not to stay indifferent during the unprecedented atrocities of the Holocaust. They chose the right side, the side of life.” Board of Deputies’ president Marie van der Zyl said: “This is an important exhibition, which celebrates the heroism of Muslim Albanians. “It is a little known history
and one which we are happy to be able to share.” She added: “These acts of heroism are a model for how Muslims and Jews ought to coexist today, challenging antisemitism and antiMuslim hatred together.” Yad Vashem UK Foundation chair Simon Bentley said the organisation is “committed to honouring nonJews who have risked their lives to save Jews during the Shoah… Albanian Muslims saved hundreds of Jewish lives”.
JTRADE EXPO TO HOLD SECOND EVENT IN JULY The Jewish construction and property industry is set to host its second JTrade Expo on 8 July this year, to “bring together Jewish entrepreneurs from across London”. Last year’s inaugural event was a sell-out, with 200 exhibitors and 3,500 visitors, and organiser Ari Fefferkorn said the concept was simply to put Jewish businesspeople in touch with each other. “We saw talented entrepre-
neurs were remaining largely unaware of each other, each focusing on their own little field and recommending dubious workers, when part of the required job didn’t fall under their particular speciality,” he said. “We decided to make these people known to each other, while allowing them to showcase their business to the public, thus boosting business and expanding client pools.”

A Jewish primary school in Hendon has been rated “good” by Ofsted following an inspection last month. Hasmonean Primary School, which was rated “good” in 2015, has been hailed by inspectors as being “a high attaining school in which pupils enjoy their learning”. Ofsted says the school’s leadership and governors provide “strong direction to the school” and “prioritised
the areas for improvement identified during the previous inspection”. Inspectors described pupils as being “well-mannered and extremely welcoming”, and parents were highlighted as being “overwhelmingly positive about the nature and support the children received.” In a statement, headteacher Dr Alan Shaw, and chair of governors Dan Sacker, said: “This is a fantastic result.”

NEWS IN BRIEF
FILM ABOUT ISRAELI WINS TOP AWARD A film by an Israeli director that follows a young Israeli man who uproots himself to France and tries to immerse himself in his new country, has won the Berlin International Film Festival’s top Golden Bear award. The broadly autobiographical Synonyms, by director Nadav Lapid, was chosen from a field of 16 movies competing at the first of the year’s major European film festivals. Set in Paris, it stars Tom Mercier in the role of Yoav, who refuses to speak Hebrew and is accompanied by an ever-present French dictionary as he tries to put down roots and create a new identity.
LOUIS FARRAKHAN IN ‘WICKED JEWS’ ROW The Nation of Islam leader has accused “wicked Jews” of using him to break up the Women’s March. Louis Farrakhan spoke at the group’s annual Saviours’ Day conference in Chicago on Sunday. He told members: “Now the wicked Jews want to use me to break up the Women’s Movement. It ain’t about Farrakhan. It’s about women all over the world [who] have the power to change the world.” The Women’s March did not respond by the time of publication.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki
Poland’s prime minister has cancelled plans for his country to send a delegation to a meeting in Jerusalem after the acting Israeli foreign minister said Poles “collaborated with the Nazis” and “sucked antisemitism from their mothers’ milk”. The developments mark a new low in a bitter conflict over how to remember and characterise Polish actions towards Jews during the German occupation of Poland in the Second World War. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had already announced on Sunday that he was pulling out of the meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu and leaders of four central European nations following a comment by the latter last week. Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz had been chosen to attend the meeting on Monday and Tuesday in his place. But Morawiecki said he was cancelling the Polish participation altogether because he considered Acting Foreign Minister Israel Katz’s comments “racist” and “absolutely unacceptable”. The Foreign Ministry also summoned the Israeli Ambassador Anna Azari to demand a second set of clarifications in recent days. Monday’s development marks
a deterioration of a spat that began last Thursday when Netanyahu said: “Poles co-operated with the Nazis.” But his office said he was misquoted. The Polish Government first summoned the Israeli ambassador last Friday, but said it was not satisfied with the explanation of the Israeli leader being quoted incorrectly. Katz said: “I am the son of Holocaust survivors,” he said, on his first day in the job. “The memory of the Holocaust is not something to compromise about. It is obvious. The 77-year-old selfdescribed democratic socialist, who is Jewish, challenged Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary in 2016 and told Vermont Public Radio he plans to again seek the nomination. Sanders has reshaped politics and earned a loyal
following with his passionate defence of liberal proposals, including free college tuition and single-payer healthcare. But he will face off against several other Democratic candidates who also want to appeal to the party’s base. However, Sanders’ name recognition, fundraising prowess and passion for liberal policies make him a top-tier 2020 presidential contender.
Benjamin Netanyahu held secret talks about Gaza and an eventual Palestinian state with Saudi Arabia’s National Security Adviser Prince Bandar bin Sultan in 2014, it has emerged. Israel’s Channel 13 News reported the secret meeting this week, outlining how the Israeli prime minister discussed reinvigorating the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative to relaunch the Israeli-Pales-
tinian peace process. A former fighter pilot, Bandar is firmly part of the Saudi establishment. He was the kingdom’s ambassador to the US for 23 years until 2005, securing the purchase of an advanced US aerial surveillance system despite vehement opposition from the powerful lobby group American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). He also has strong links to
Britain, having negotiated the £40 billion Al-Yamamah defence deal between the UK and Saudi Arabia. He owns a 2,000-acre country estate in Oxfordshire and his son is married to an aristocratic heiress. Bandar led Saudi Arabia’s intelligence agency until 2014, the year he met Netanyahu, the two men bonding over their common aim of countering Iran.

World News / Cemetery desecration / Livni quits
80 Jewish graves attacked Some 80 Jewish graves were desecrated and daubed with swastikas on Monday evening in the village of Quatzenheim near Strasbourg in eastern France. This comes as thousands across Paris and dozens of other French cities marched against antisemitism, following a series of racist acts that shocked the nation. Interior minister Christophe Castaner tweeted his “outrage and disgust”, while French president Emmanuel Macron headed to the Jewish cemetery vandalised overnight.

“Every time a French person, because he or she is Jewish, is insulted, threatened – or worse, injured or killed – the whole Republic is attacked”, Macron told
reporters at a press conference in Paris. Former French presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy joined 20,000 protesters on the
Paris streets. Macron did not attend the gathering at the Republic Square, but delivered a speech at Wednesday’s annual dinner by leading Jewish group CRIF. In addition to the marches, National Assembly president Richard Ferrand and the head of Senate Gerard Larcher will hold a moment of silence at the Shoah memorial in Paris. This comes days after the French government reported a 74 percent rise in antisemitism last year, with 541 registered incidents last year, up from 311 in 2017.
LIVNI QUITS, WITH WARNING FOR VOTERS Veteran lawmaker Tzipi Livni, a fixture in the Knesset for nearly 20 years, announced this week she will quit politics at the end of the current Knesset session and pull her Hatnua Party out of the election race. “I’m announcing that Hatnua will not run in the upcoming elections,” she said at a press conference in Tel Aviv. “We do not have enough political power to realise our principles. I halt the battle
knowing that I did everything for my beloved country.” Holding back tears and with her voice breaking multiple times during the speech, which was highly critical of Benjamin Netanyahu, she added: “If he won’t stop, these elections will be the last act of democracy in Israel. We must defend the freedom of expression of those who do not agree with their views.”

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
Act of last resort SAS veterans will tell you that everyone has their breaking point. The eight resigning Labour MPs – citing little or no progress on antisemitism – can attest. Such has been the tortuous road to this split, the most dramatic in UK politics in a generation. The idea that antisemitism was a key factor is galling. It will cheer not a single Jewish News reader. It fills us with dread that eight decent, dedicated MPs have left the party to whose mast they nailed their colours because it wasn’t tackling hatred. Few have stuck it out longer than Luciana Berger, who despite facing more than two years of appalling antisemitism, hasn’t spoken to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn since 2017. Not when an internet troll was jailed for targeting her. Not even when she was accompanied by police protection officers at the party’s annual conference. Corbyn’s cruel indifference beggars belief. We can’t praise her enough for the bravery and fortitude she has shown throughout this awful episode, or indeed that of Joan Ryan who has paid such a heavy price for standing with the community and Israel. Many in the community – and country – will see hope today when they couldn’t just one week ago. And that is down to this still small group. No one should doubt the scale of the decision of the ex-Labour MPs to abandon a party they have given so much to, but it is hard to imagine others won’t soon reach the same conclusion. Such is the collective mood within Labour these days that even deputy leader Tom Watson this week sounded like he could also be on the verge of abandoning ship. It’s clear that the brave move by Berger and her new colleagues in the Independent Group has emboldened others to realise there may be an alternative. And what next for British Jews? The small number who blindly support the socialist agenda will stick with Corbyn, who in their eyes can and will do no wrong. Others will stick to the Conservatives, despite their own failings and struggles. And the many progressive, centrist Jews who have not felt at home with Labour since the coming of Corbyn will continue to wander Westminster, eyeing this new Independent bloc with curiosity, waiting to hear the policies. Early polling suggests the new group could have a seismic impact if it became a party. Depending on the mood of the nation – and who emerges as the leader of the new independent group – Luciana Berger will either become one of the most influential voices in British politics in the next two years or the grouping that dramatically burst on to the scenes this week will fade. Politically, it’s a huge gamble. But few things ever feel like a gamble when they also feel like an action of last resort. Because no one holds out forever.

ANTISEMITISM IS NEVER ‘HARMLESS’ I disagree with the assertion by Gavriel Cohn in his letter in last week’s edition (Jewish News 14 February) entitled ‘Don’t panic over antisemitism’. The heading is self-explanatory. Mr Cohn refers in his letter to antisemitism in this country being, among other things, “normal”, “low impact” and “harmless” and involving “low-level attacks.” For me, no Jewish person should have to be the victim of any “level” of antisemitic behaviour and it is certainly never “harmless”. Furthermore, Mr Cohn, today is not very different. Yes, it can very well happen again even here, in England, where many of us are indeed proud to live, work and raise our families. I suggest to Mr Cohn that he bears in mind the

following truisms: History repeats itself. We never learn the lessons of history. Antisemitism is corrosive, divisive and, ultimately, destructive to any society. The storm clouds are again gathering over the Jewish people here in the UK, even if, and I agree with one point, the stormtroopers are not. Yes, the current and many previous governments in this country have been protective and supportive of the Jewish community here – but antisemitism is a big problem for us and, as Mr Cohn appreciates, is now rife within a mainstream British political party. FOR AND AGAINST SHAMIMA What to do about Shamima Begum, the teenager who left her home in Bethnal Green as a 15-year-old to join Isis and now with the group’s defeat wants to return to the UK? The dismal details of the case have been well aired these past few days and with a cast list ranging from the girl’s parents (bring her home) to President Trump (put her in jail), there will no doubt be much more. The Times, which tracked the pregnant Begum down to a refugee camp in northern Syria just before she gave birth, started the furore. Its initial story was that (a) she wanted to return to the UK and (b) she remained unrepentant about her actions, first in joining the
terror group and secondly in becoming a poster girl for it. It was a perfect case study in how to polarise opinions. If it helps and in case you missed it, I draw attention to Monday’s follow-up story in The Times, and I quote: “A teenager caught as she headed to Syria to become a jihadist bride was never prosecuted despite police finding a cache of extremist material including plans of a key target for Islamic State, The Times can reveal.” The paper noted the girl, also 15, was in a group of five from Bethnal Green attempting to join the terrorist group “and the only one not to be successful”.

The wrong song In his excellent piece on the BDS boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest in Israel (14 February), your editor Richard Ferrer makes a small but significant error. He refers to the area named the ‘West Bank’ by the Jordanians as ‘Palestinian land’. Did the invasion, annexation and expulsion of all the Jews by the Jordanians make it Palestinian? Is there a more recent legal document which negates the unanimous decision at the League of Nations San Remo Conference recognising the historic connection
between the Jews and the land, and the instruction to the British Mandate to facilitate ‘close settlement’ by the Jews? Where is the international legal document stating that the land is ‘Palestinian’? The non-Jews living there today lay claim to the land. Surely the discarded term ‘disputed territory’ should be used until long-awaited peace talks can deliver a just solution to the problem.
Mr Grynberg in his letter (Jewish News 30 January) says after being refused admission to the exhibition he asked to go into the building to use the toilet but was again refused. Maybe Mr Hoffman can tell us how refusing someone the use of a toilet can be an ‘administrative error’?
This is not a Jewish topic but, nevertheless, I would like to place on record my sadness on learning of the passing of former England goalkeeper Gordon Banks. I had the pleasure of seeing him in action for Chesterfield at Southend United (was it 1958?). Chesterfield won 5-2. Banks launched himself across his goal several times in that match. Who were we to realise what he would go on to achieve in the years to come. We are all humble.

HOW WAS IT AN ERROR? Stephen Hoffman writes (Jewish News 14 February) that the exclusion of Warren Grynberg from the ‘Love your Neighbour’ exhibition organised by Faith Matters at the Muslim Community Centre in Ilford on 20 January was an ‘administrative error’. How does he know? He was not part of the organising team and was not present.

STARTING A BROIGAS A grassroots campaign with the apt acronym BROIGAS has begun to gather momentum. It is a direct challenge by individuals incensed at the proposed anti-Jewish state legislation passing through Ireland’s legislative process with ease. Boycott Republic Of Ireland Goods And Services is simple to implement just by avoiding consumer products labelled Republic of Ireland or by avoiding the country for holidays and business visits where possible. There is no organised funding or
support, just dedicated individuals who are challenging the dedicated agenda of a European nation to punish selectively the only Jewish State in the world. Through social media I have been informed of some astonishing successes ranging from numerous cruise cancellations from the USA, racehorse owners transferring from Irish stables and individuals shelving food and pharmaceutical products. Boycott the boycotters!

Shul security did well Regarding your story about a mother being turned away at the gates of a Hendon shul, she and the man with her were questioned like every non-member, regardless of race. She said “we come and pray”. She then lied and said she came the week before. She was asked if she knew any of the rabbanim and she couldn’t name any. Then a member
of the board was called out of shul and he did not know the couple. So yes, they were turned away and CST was called as she berated security. All CST protocol was followed. The lady tried to play the race game and still does. I congratulate the security team on doing a great job.

How Board stepped into a hornet’s nest ALEX BRUMMER
CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL
W
hen Jewish leaders from around the globe gathered at the World Jewish Congress in Budapest in 2013, they were greeted at their hotel by far-right supporters of Jobbick chanting antiSemitic slogans. The success of Jobbik at the ballot box was one reason WJC president Ronnie Lauder, of HungarianJewish extraction, chose the Budapest venue. As Board of Deputies delegate to the meeting, I decided one afternoon to leave the formal sessions to stroll along the Danube and visit the memorial of the shoes, created by sculptor Gyula Pauer to honour the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest. The simple memorial is of particular significance to me and my family because two of my father’s elder brothers (and later a younger brother) had been rounded up by the Arrow Cross in the early 1940s to work in the forests. At first there was correspondence and the
dispatch from my grandparents’ home of food and clothing parcels. Then silence. On my way to the memorial I was stopped by a young man who asked if was attending the WJC. His father, he told me, was an economist working in the Hungarian finance ministry and had recently been told, without reason, he was to be made redundant. No one had explained why, but his father believed he was being singled out as the most senior Jew in his department. The young man wanted advice on whether he should continue his studies in his native country or move to Manchester, where he had been offered a university place to read finance. Antisemitism in Hungary is deep rooted and, unlike in Germany, the fascist past has never been fully confronted. There is a paradox in this. Because the Nazis did not start the systematic elimination of Hungarian Jewry until 1944, they never completed it. As many as 100,000 if not more Hungarian Jews escaped the camps and community life has continued to flourish – one of the great tourist attractions in the centre of Budapest is the magnificent Dohány Street Synagogue
❝
UNLIKE IN GERMANY, THE FASCIST PAST IN HUNGARY WAS NEVER FULLY CONFRONTED used as a wedding destination by Jews from all over Europe. Kosher food and drink is prominent in Hungarian supermarkets. At the time of the WJC meeting, Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, was seen as a moderating influence holding out against the extreme views of Jobbick. The latter, in an echo of the past, was demanding among other things a list of all Jewish property owners. Since then, Orban has been on a political journey to the right driven partly by economic hardship in the eurozone and waves of immigration coming from the Middle East and Africa. It is into this vortex that Board president Marie van der Zyl, president of the
Board of Deputies, has found herself sucked. There is nothing unusual about the engagement between the Board and Hungary. The Board’s international division spends its time defending Jewish communities worldwide. The current cause of anxiety relates to the demonisation of Hungarian billionaire financier and philanthropist George Soros. The Orban government objects strongly to his advocacy of open-society and pro-immigration views and has used antisemitic tropes to attack him. At the time it has also been trying to combat the tide of anti-Semitism, recently allocating $3.4m in the budget. Negotiating this maze of conflicting actions by the Hungarian government probably explains why the country’s secretary of state, Vince Szalay-Bobrovniczky, reacted so strongly to the meeting with van der Zyl, telling the Board to ‘mind its own business’. The BoD stepped into a hornet’s nest of nationalism, pride and Shoah history. It was right to remind Hungary of its responsibility not to fan antisemitism. It was perhaps less than diplomatic to have been so publicly noisy about the Board’s uncompromising message.
Only Netanyahu can harm Netanyahu now JAMES SORENE

srael’s election campaign is about to enter its final phase. On 21 February party lists have to be published and the battle lines will be fixed. The rumoured mega-merger between Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz never happened. Gantz’s momentum has stalled and the frisson of his first speech has fizzled away. The bizarre reality is that the only serious threat to Netanyahu, the one politician who can really damage his reputation and dent his popularity is none other than Benjamin Netanyahu himself. Attorney General Avichai Mandleblit has long been the elephant in the room at Likud HQ. His decision whether or not to indict the Prime Minister, pending a hearing, is a game changer and expected within days. It is possible that Mandleblit will say he is not following the police recommendation in three cases to indict the Prime Minister for bribery, fraud and breach of trust. In that
scenario, Netanyahu will sail on smoothly to victory on 9 April. But that is unlikely. What we know about these cases – the gravity of the charges, the number of former Bibi aides who have become state witnesses and the detail of the police recommendations – indicate that the attorney general will recommend that Netanyahu be indicted. But the announcement is just the beginning. Netanyahu long ago launched a fiery campaign to undermine the legitimacy of the legal process that involved criticising his own attorney general and accusing the police and prosecutors of being influenced by a cunning cabal of ‘leftists’ running a witch hunt to depose him. Likud voters have been hearing about these corruption cases for years and have arguably priced it in to their support for the party which has been rock solid for weeks. The polls do appear to have stabilised. There is some movement between the centre and left parties but there has been almost no migration of right-wing voters to the centre. According to BICOM’s latest aggregate poll, Netanyahu would have the numbers to put together a replica of his 2015 coalition with a small governing majority. This was

helped by Kulanu leader Moshe Kahlon’s screeching u-turn last week when he said he would join a Netanyahu coalition, even if the prime minister has been indicted. Kulanu are predicted to win just five seats, but they will be vital to help Netanyahu over the line. The decision to indict Netanyahu is a game changer for three reasons. First, the corruption charges become reality. Once the Attorney General utters those words Netanyahu will be a different proposition in the eyes of voters. Even if he wins the election, he will be weighed down by the heavy baggage of a criminal case. Distracted and completely consumed by the exhausting and emotional struggle to avoid prison. Second, there is the evidence. Although this is not supposed to happen, there is the
strong possibility that key documents and audio recordings will immediately leak to the media. How will Likud voters react as explicit documents are published and recordings are broadcast providing details about all the things Netanyahu has denied for months? The opposition will have a field day and this will fuel a furious final phase of the campaign. The election result could ultimately hinge on whether 200,000 Likud voters feel disappointed enough to switch their support to Gantz or Lapid. The leaks from the investigations could push them over the edge. Finally, there is the question of how Netanyahu himself behaves. Will he hold it together and maintain a high level of competence or will more mistakes creep in. His performance last week in Warsaw was replete with uncharacteristic misjudgements. In the next six weeks Netanyahu, the accomplished campaigner, will utilise every ounce of his immense experience and skill to win this election. But he faces the mother of all battles against the emerging evidence of his own malign behaviour and the spiteful rhetoric fed by his own worst instincts.

I am staying to fight – and need your help RUTH SMEETH MP
LABOUR, STOKE-ON-TRENT NORTH
I
was born into a proud Jewish, Labour, family. My great zayde arrived from Poland in the late 19th century. He was a founder member of the Jewish branch of the Amalgamated Union of Cabinet Makers, which became Unite. As a proud trade unionist he was also a Labour man, who campaigned in the East End for the party which represented his values and the values he passed down through our family to me. In the 1923 Whitechapel by-election he took my bubbe with him as they marched the streets singing, “Vote, vote, vote for Harry Gosling”. My bubbe was just 10-years-old, but his politics shaped hers and ensured that throughout her life she helped those who needed it and quietly fought for what was right. She delivered food and clothes to the Jarrow Marchers when they arrived in
London; she worked with anti-fascists on the preparations for Cable Street; she campaigned to deliver a Labour Government in 1945 and collected food for striking miners in the 1980s. Her battles were wherever she saw injustice, inequality and prejudice. She was our matriarch; she inspired our family; she instilled our values. And yet she never called herself a socialist – her drive wasn’t rigid dogma or an unyielding commitment to economic theory. Her motivation was simple – she was Labour because it was always the Labour Party that fought for people like us. She would have been heartbroken by the antisemitism we currently see in the Labour Party. This week she would probably have been begged me to walk away, for my own safety and for my family’s peace of mind. But she was on the frontline for some of the biggest fights in the history of our movement and never shied away from doing what was desperately needed just because it was hard.
❝
I WILL NOT WALK AWAY FROM MY ONCE GREAT PARTY OF CASTLE AND ATTLEE I won’t either. I’m truly heartbroken by what the leadership of the Labour Party has enabled. A small but hardcore racist element have infiltrated our party. I’m devastated my friend, Luciana Berger, has been hounded out of our party for nothing more than being a Jewish woman; for standing up against antisemitism within the party and being brave enough to speak out. But I will not walk away and allow my once great party – the party of Attlee, of Barbara Castle, of Manny Shinwell or Ian Mikardo and allow it to become a natural
home for antisemites. I refuse to abandon the thousands of decent and hard-working members of the Labour Party who campaign each and every week for a better country or give up on the 120-year history of a movement which has been the greatest force for social change in our country. We cannot let the racists win and, after decades of loudly campaigning against racism wherever I found it, I refuse to be silenced when it is in my own party. So to my Labour family and my Jewish family, I want to say that I have never walked away from a fight and have no intention of doing so now. It is time to be counted in the battle to remove antisemitism from the Labour Party, as it is a battle for the heart and soul of the labour movement. And I will not allow Labour, the party that is as much of my identity as my faith, to shirk its duty to fight that battle with me. So I am staying. But I am staying to fight and I’ll need your help to win.

e are not resigning our Labour Party membership, we won’t be pushed out, yet we totally understand why Luciana Berger decided to leave, and look forward to a future when we will again work together. She is a real loss and anyone who says otherwise should be challenged, and ultimately has no place within the Labour Party. Indeed, the sight of a Jewish woman being bullied and harassed for several years online and in person, from both the far right and from elements within the party is utterly shameful. It is undoubtedly a low point in the history of a great party. So why do we stay? We have campaigned all our lives against racists and antisemites. We are staying because the Labour Party at its best has championed equality, delivered better public services and provided an umbrella to fight all forms of racism and xenophobia including antisemitism. It did so for decades. It can again. We don’t take this for granted, but are prepared to fight for these values.
Today, across Europe and North America, there is a double wave of antisemitism – from the far-right and hard left. In the past, these racists lurked in the darkest corners of politics, in extremist parties and fringe groups, but their tactics have changed. They have successfully infiltrated mainstream political parties or, as they have done outside the UK, refashioned themselves into electable entities. Sadly, few now deny extremist elements operate within Labour. Over the past few months the two of us, a Reform Jewish leader and an Orthodox rabbi, decided to engage within local constituency parties, in London and the south east, to enter into conversations with ordinary members. We have seen both the best and worst of Labour. In some constituencies there is open hostility, where the constituency party has been taken over by the extreme elements and become institutionally antisemitic. However, more often than not we have seen time after time ordinary members from a broad spectrum of political views who openly express their concern at the growth of antisemitism in the party. Expressions of sympathy are not enough, but we have seen evidence from many

IF WE SURRENDER SPACE ON THE LEFT TODAY, IT WILL BE THE RIGHT TOMORROW – SELF-EXCLUSION IS NO STRATEGY local constituencies taking action, adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. It appears there is a genuine Labour mainstream wanting to rid itself of racism and antisemitism. Now is the time to support it and to mobilise. If the party centrally is impotent to act decisively against antisemitism, we need to appeal to the hundreds of thousands of ordinary anti-racist grassroots members who care. We’ve listened to calls to abandon the party, but believe surrendering vast areas of political space to antisemitic elements gives them an undeserved and easy victory. If we surrender space on the left today, then it will be the right tomorrow, until there is no space for most Jews to enter the public political arena as ordinary British citizens. Self-exclusion is no strategy.
We refuse to do the racists’ work for them in self-silencing Jewish voices. Success by antisemites within mainstream left-wing parties in the UK has no doubt bolstered populist elements wishing to engage the mainstream right. Take, for example, a vote in the European Parliament where Conservative MEPs supported Hungarian and Polish Governments accused of antisemitism when other mainstream right-wing parties in Europe opposed them. It seems that in this instance they were less concerned by upsetting the Jewish community than before. Rather than abandon the party, Jewish members and their allies should engage and dialogue with local parties to face down this ugly cancer of antisemitism. We shall fight extremists in the party, in Parliament, on the street and on social media. The price of losing is far too great.

‘Ruth fights for us all’ Actress Felicity Jones tells Francine Wolfisz of her admiration for the Supreme Court’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg
I
n the autumn of 1956, a throng of 500 male students confidently filed into Harvard Law School on their first day of college – with just nine young women almost indiscernible among the crowd. They included Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a young married mother who had already faced prejudice because of her Jewish background and upbringing in Brooklyn. But if her adversaries now thought the addition of gender discrimination would stop her dreams of pursuing a legal career, they were very much mistaken. She may have been small in stature (at just a little over 5ft tall), but Bader Ginsburg has more than proved her might over the decades by becoming a leading advocate for the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights. Ginsburg also became the second female justice appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States and can still be found delivering arguments from her bench, aged 85. Now the inspiring story of Ginsburg’s fight against discrimination and first major win for equal rights is retold in the Mimi Lederdirected film, On The Basis Of Sex, which opens in cinemas tomorrow. British-born actress Felicity Jones, seen most recently in The Theory Of Everything and Rogue One plays Ginsburg, alongside Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name, The Social Network) as her husband, Marty. The stellar cast also features Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston and Kathy Bates, while the
film was scripted by Ginsburg’s nephew, Daniel Stiepleman. Speaking to Jewish News, Jones reflects that experiencing prejudice in multiple forms from a young age was key to forming Ginsburg’s tenacious personality. “She was fighting on all fronts,” explains the 35-year-old. “Not only because of her gender, but also because of her faith and where she came from. There was snobbery about her Brooklyn roots from people working in law. “What was phenomenal is just how many doors were consistently slammed in her face. She was discriminated against in every possible way – and even once lost a job because she was pregnant. But all these injustices in her own life enabled her to forge a campaign to shift the landscape, not only for herself, but also for others. Experiencing that prejudice was vital to who she was.” Jones admits feeling a large sense of trepidation before she and co-star Hammer finally met the American-Jewish icon affectionately dubbed the “Notorious RBG”, but their fears quickly melted thanks to Ginsburg’s “very keen, almost British sense of humour” and welcoming personality. “We were waiting outside her office at the Supreme Court before we were introduced and were trying
to think of things we could say to impress her,” smiles Jones. “We walked in rather nervously, but then Ruth just looked up at Armie and was completely entranced by him – like so many of us are!” In that moment, Jones believes Ginsburg was reminded of her husband, Marty, to whom she was married for 56 years until his death in 2010. Their relationship, as shown in the film, was one of great love on both a personal and professional level – rather than focusing solely on his own ambitions, Marty was a pre-eminent tax lawyer who was also “enormously supportive” of Ginsburg’s work. He also took on his fair share of parenting duties, household chores and cooking meals at a time when doing so was certainly not the “norm” for men. In fact, during that first meeting with Ginsburg, Jones and Hammer were presented with a book of Marty’s favourite recipes. “In handing it to us, she showed just how important that relationship was to her and what an enormous love they had for each other. It was that great contrast of the icon with a human being who was like any of us, just someone who has loved and lost.” Aside from exploring Ginsburg’s personal life, On The Basis Of Sex is also at its heart about her aspirations to slowly overturn decades of gender discrimination in the courtroom. Interestingly, the case that sparks her

mission involves a single man named Charles Moritz, who she successfully argued had been discriminated against in a $296 tax deduction, because the law did not recognise men could be caregivers. Her tenaciousness in securing a victory is more than evident, but it was how Ginsburg handled herself against sexist put-downs as she navigated her way through the legal landscape that has most impressed Jones. “What has surprised me is her ability not to get knocked down. Even now, there’s all these huge conspiracy theories that she’s not even alive. I was reading about all this nonsense that she has to continuously fight against and was impressed by her tenacity to just keep going and not let the negativity get to her.” Getting to know more about a cultural icon such as Ginsburg has left a lasting impression on her, explains Jones. “We have so few leaders at the moment who we can really look up to, who have stuck by their beliefs, who can give us some kind of principled guidance – and she is someone who has done that throughout her life. “The beliefs she has started off with, she has stuck by those. I definitely feel she has changed me in quite a fundamental way.” On The Basis Of Sex (12A) opens in cinemas across the UK from tomorrow

It started with The Kiss As Alfred Eisenstaedt’s iconic picture makes headlines again, we take a closer look at the talent behind the lens
J
ust minutes after hearing the Second World War had ended, Alfred Eisenstaedt made his way towards Times Square with his trusty Leica and captured what would later become one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century: an ecstatic sailor bending down to kiss a nurse. The photograph, known as V-J Day in Times Square, or more familiarly, The Kiss, was back in the headlines this week following the death of George Mendonsa, the man identified as embracing an unsuspecting Jewish dental assistant named Greta Zimmer Friedman. Before their famous embrace, the couple had never before met – but the moment was captured for posterity on August 14, 1945, by German-Jewish photographer Eisenstaedt, who was on assignment for Life magazine. Eager to capture the celebrations around him, Eisenstaedt did not have a chance to get the names and details of his subjects, leading to several people putting themselves forward before experts identified Mendonsa and Friedman. Writing about that infamous moment, Eisenstaedt recalled seeing a sailor “grabbing any and every girl in sight”. He wrote: “Whether she was a grandmother, stout, thin, old, didn’t make a difference…Then suddenly, in a flash, I saw something white being grabbed. I turned around and clicked the moment the sailor kissed the nurse.” Mendonsa, who served on a destroyer during the war and was on leave when peace was announced, also spoke about the kiss when he was honoured at the Rhode Island State House in 2015. He said Friedman reminded him of nurses on a hospital ship that he saw care for wounded sailors. “I saw what those nurses did that day and now back in Times Square the war ends, a few drinks, so I grabbed the nurse,” he said. However Friedman, who had fled Austria aged 15 during the war, admitted in a 2005 interview that it was not her choice to be kissed. “The guy just came over and kissed or grabbed,” she told the Library of Congress. She added: “It was just somebody really celebrating. But it wasn’t a romantic event.” The Kiss remains one of Eisenstaedt’s most memorable photographs, but was just one of more than 2,500 photo stories published in Life Magazine (which also used 90 of his images on the cover) during an extensive career spanning more than 50 years. Born in 1898, Eisenstaedt was raised in Berlin and began taking an interest in photography aged 14, after he was given his first camera: an Eastman Kodak Folding Camera. After serving in the German Army during the First World War, he became a photographer for Associated Press, as well as Illustrierte Zeitung, then the world’s largest publishing house.
His notable early photographs include an ice-skating waiter at the Grand Hotel in St Moritz, the first meeting between Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini in Italy, and Joseph Goebbels at the League of Nations in Geneva, 1933. Of the latter, Eisenstaedt explained his subject had been smiling until he caught sight of the Jewish photographer, resulting in his tensed, scowling face. By 1935, facing the threat of Nazi persecution, Eisenstaedt moved with his family to New York, where he joined Life magazine, becoming one of its most well-known photojournalists. His extensive career saw him rubbing shoulders with world leaders and celebrities, recording historic events and capturing human stories right up until his death in 1995. His eclectic subjects included the Yakuza, a mafia-like organisation in Japan showing off their extensive body tattoos, the construction of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe relaxing at home, and Winston Churchill flashing his famous “V for Victory” sign. He also travelled to Hiroshima just four months after an atomic bomb was dropped by American forces on August 6, 1945, capturing a mother and child who would almost certainly have succumbed to radiation poisoning. It was just one of many powerful and poignant moments of the 20th century captured by Eisenstaedt, whose work remains as evocative today as when they were first taken.

Feta attraction ! Lucy Daltroff explores the cultural delights of Thessaloniki and discovers the history of its Jewish-Greek community
I
t’s a moment of pure theatre: The Friday night service has just ended and, as the children are being led out in single file, a little boy aged four puts a finger to his lips and blows a kiss to his great grandmother, just visible in the gap of the mechitza. I am in Thessaloniki (also known as Thessalonica), Greece on a trip arranged by Milk and Honey Tours, witnessing the warmth of Jewish family life in its main busy shul. In the few hours I’ve been here, I’m learning that to understand Jewish history properly, a visit to this second city of Greece is essential. After all, even the word “synagogue” originally comes from the Greek synagoge, meaning ‘place of assembly ’. My first impression of Thessaloniki is not of beauty, but of charm. It’s simply bursting with different cultures. This is reflected in the architecture, which ranges between Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. A Roman Agora (central public space) dominates the town. This is all despite a devastating fire, which ravaged in August 1917 and destroyed two-thirds of the city. It was rebuilt to a set plan, with its centre on the architecturally-pleasing Aristotelous Square, which leads on to the long attractive paralia or promenade, built on the original walls. Thessaloniki makes it slightly unusual as there is no beach; just the wall and then sea. It’s also a busy promenade: besides walkers, I found myself among a bustling crowd that included photographers, cyclists and people doing their daily exercise. At one end of this long walkway is the spectacular and iconic White Tower, the symbol of the city. It was put up by the Ottomans in 1430, originally as a fortification, although later it became a notorious prison. Now it’s a museum of the town’s history. Nearby, spectacular pirate-looking boats take visitors for trips along the coast. At the other end is the busy port, the second largest in Greece – and in between a vast number
of coffee shops, and authentic open air cafés, a tribute to what is very much a living city, without souvenirs or tourist menus. Thessaloniki suffered from the economic crisis, but somehow it doesn’t seem to have affected its energy. There are many museums, but two stand out: the Archaeological Museum and the one covering Byzantine Culture, both containing astonishing collections that are easy to understand, with captions in English, as well as in Greek. Then there are the shops. Everywhere, top international stores sit alongside quirky luxury brands. I walked past one I thought sold shoes, until I saw that all the high-heeled elegance was actually made of chocolate! A particular good excursion is to go by bus or car to the upper town, via the twisting Ottomanera roads, and take in an overall view, which stretches over the whole metropolis with Mount Olympus in the distance. Yet with all its attractions, it is the Jewish history of Thessaloniki that really sets this place apart. There is evidence of a Greek-speaking Jewish presence here as early as the second century BCE, who followed their own ancient rituals. Later, there is information showing that the most ancient synagogue was visited by Paul of Tarsus in the first century. Then the Romaniote Jews settled in the city with their distinct language of Judaeo-Greek (a Greek dialect that contained Hebrew, along with some Aramaic and Turkish), but by far the largest influx was during the 15th and 16th centuries from those fleeing the Inquisitions in both Spain, and later, Portugal. More than 20,000 Sephardic Jews immigrated to Greece as a whole, so that in 1519 Jewish numbers in Thessaloniki topped 16,000 – more than half of the city. All the different communities had their own synaThe Holocaust memorial in Eleftherias Square gogues with the Sephardic and

Romaniotes speaking different languages. Even as late as 1902, the Ottoman Government census shows 62,000 Jewish inhabitants. It was so Jewish that the busy port was closed for business on a Saturday. The lecturer on our tour, Professor Rena Molho, explained that the community was far from wealthy; all the basic jobs, from porters to dock workers were carried out by Jewish employees. This all ended in 1943, however, when the Nazis began forcing every Jewish citizen into a ghetto and then mass deportation to the concentration camps. Ninety-six per cent of Thessaloniki’s Jewish population perished. The Jewish Community Holocaust Memorial was put up in 1997 in Eleftherias (“Freedom”) Square, and on the day I visited, a large crowd had gathered to pay their respects. Today, the Thessaloniki community numbers
1,200 (compared to 3,000 in Athens). On high holy days, services spill over into another shul. The attractive Monastirlis Synagogue built in 1925 with funding from the Jewish community of Monastir (in former Yugoslavia) was spared destruction during the Second World War, because it was used by the Red Cross. Now an even bigger project is scheduled: A museum will be built, to open in 2020, with exhibitions devoted to the culture and history of the community. The Greek railways donated land overlooking the railway station where the deportations took place, and €22 million (£19.4m) was raised to fund the building. Mayor Yannis Boutaris has called the plan “a fulfilment of a historic responsibility for Thessaloniki”. He added: “Only in this way will we be able to have a greater awareness of what this crime means and why it should not be repeated.”
LUCY’S TRAVEL TIPS Lucy was a guest of Milk and Honey Tours (milkandhoneytours.com), which specialises in guided Jewish tours to more than 60 destinations across Europe. She stayed at the Electra Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki (www.electrahotels.gr/en/thessaloniki/electra-palace-thessaloniki).

SEDRA Ki Tissa
Torah For Today What does the Torah say about...Shamima Begum ? BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL
BY RABBI JEFF BERGER This week’s parsha tells the story of the Golden Calf and Moses’ efforts to save our special relationship with God. To recap, Moses was atop Mount Sinai receiving the Tablets from the Almighty, when a panic in the camp lead people to demand Aaron make, “an Elohim that would walk in front of them”. An idol was formed and merrymaking ensued. Angered, God sent Moses down to the corrupted nation, warning they would be wiped out. But before descending, Moses ‘”argued with God” for their survival. Winning an injunction, he returned to camp, saw the Golden Calf, smashed the divinely-carved tablets and began a national atonement process. Next, Moses asked to see God’s presence. Curiously, before that could happen, God proposed that Bnei Yisrael immediately embark for the Promised Land, where an angel would lead them to victory. More curiously, Moses refused. He understood that because God would not accompany them, this would be a parting of the ways and His involvement with the Jewish people would end. Not quite annihilation, it was still an untenable compromise. There are moments in every relationship when a full-on commitment is needed or it breaks down. Ki Tisa reminds us there was a time when history might have turned out very differently, but Moses’ clear-sighted and uncompromising determination saved the day.

Shamima Begum, who left Britain to join Islamic State has asked to return to the UK, but the Home Office has revoked her citizenship. What does the Torah say about this? The spectre of one’s own brethren or sisters siding with mortal enemies happened at the time of Hezekiah, when a Hebrew-speaking Rabshakeh attempted to talk down the Jerusalemites and open the gates wide open to the Assyrian army. There is no specific penalty in Jewish law for the likes of Rabshakeh, and indeed it would be very difficult to determine precedent to rule out the possibility that Jews might fight as conscripts in an army against a Jewish state. However, if that Jew disloyally
crossed the line and left to join an enemy camp, the penalty would be similar to that meted out for a capital crime. Even David himself was hunted down, because he was suspected of disloyalty to Saul, who was both his father-in-law and the Crown.
❝
THE JEWISH VIEW IS THAT BEGUM SHOULD RETURN TO FACE TRIAL FOR CRIMES SHE MAY HAVE COMMITTED
Saul saw to the slaughter, at the hand of Doeg the Edomite, of all the priests of Nob, because a starving David was offered some bread from the holy sanctuary in that town. Were it not for David being elected and anointed by the prophet, Saul would have been well within both legal and moral limits to hunt down David, who represented a threat to his throne. The Torah view would be consistent with Shamima Begum returning to face trial for any crimes she may have committed, most notably those that relate to disloyalty to the Crown and country. Revoking her citizenship is not recommended. This assists her in avoiding the force of the law under which she could be charged and face justice, which in itself would act as a preventative for other UK citizens thinking about defecting to enemy entities. The Bible Says What? ‘Moses instructs men and women to be segregated’ BY RABBI AARON GOLDSTEIN And Moses said to the people: “Be ready for the third day: do not go near [i.e. have sex with] a woman” (Exodus 19:15) With these words, Moses gives an instruction only to the Israelite men. And indeed it is one that segregates them from women. Such gender inequality has since been perpetrated for millennia in Judaism. Rabbi Julie Gordon sees Moses’ words as a continuation of his fatherin-law Jethro’s bias, who had advised him to seek “trustworthy men” from the people to be judges and leaders. She asks: “Why didn’t Jethro consider women as capable leaders? Miriam, for example, is described a few chapters before as a prophet. Jethro’s own daughter, Moses’ wife Tzipporah, had shown decisive action in the desert when she circumcised her and Moses’ son. Furthermore, why did Moses accept Jethro’s implicit negation of women as leaders?” For all those who defend today’s
segregation of men and women, we need only look back just a few lines further in Exodus to see that this was not God’s actual intention. At arguably the pivotal moment of our ancient Israelite ancestors and our Jewish narrative, Matan Torah (the giving of the Torah at Sinai), God addresses the people with full gender equality. Revelation was for all. God calls the Israelites with no differentiation a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Exodus 19:6), and the people as a whole respond: “All the Eternal has spoken, we will do” (19:8). It is this that Liberal Judaism holds close. Women have always had full equality and held leadership positions – from our founder Lily Montagu, to today’s pioneering women clergy, who make up half of our Conference of Liberal Rabbis and Cantors. The revelation for us is Judaism is about integration, not segregation. Aaron Goldstein is Senior Rabbi of Northwood & Pinner Liberal Shul
Progressively Speaking If five percent of Brits doubt the Shoah took place, who will put them right? BY RABBI MARK GOLDSMITH On 27 January, a man in his 80s named Gordon Spencer lit the memorial candle for Barnet Borough’s Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) commemoration. Gordon, a member of our Alyth Synagogue, was born Gunther Spiegel in Wurzburg, Bavaria, in 1930. He came to Britain with his mother in August 1939, a month before the Second World War broke out. His father had already escaped to London on his release from incarceration in Dachau. All the rest of his family was murdered in the Shoah. How insulting it is to people like Gordon, and their descendants, to know, as the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s independently conducted survey found, that five percent of their fellow Britons doubt the Shoah took place. Equally maddening is that 12 percent of the 2,000 people surveyed say they think the numbers murdered have been exaggerated. Unfortunately, Gordon, and the
Gordon Spencer and Rabbi Mark Goldsmith earlier this year
Jewish people he represents, are not alone. At the same Barnet HMD ceremony, Fidelis Mironko, from the Rwandan Embassy, spoke about the challenge of denial in his country regarding the murder of 800,000 of his fellow Rwandans by their mostly Hutu countrymen. Earlier in the year, I went with Remembering Srebrenica and the Joseph Interfaith Foundation to Bosnia where we, as a group of Jews and Muslims visiting together, were told that Bosnian Muslims are also
having to deal with the insult of denial of what happened to them during the genocidal murder of nearly 10,000 people that took place in 1995. Denial of the awful reality of genocide is a shared experience of oppressed people. To challenge denial, we must engage in education and sharing experience the length and breadth of the country. The Holocaust Education Trust and others ensure Shoah education is nationwide, and we should join with others who have experienced both genocide and its subsequent denial. It requires multiple recordkeeping, in addition to the records at Yad Vashem. In our synagogue, we keep our own book recording the Shoah experiences of our members’ families – when secondary schools visit here, we can show them the Holocaust was the real experience of their neighbours. JEWISH BLIND & DISABLED Dear Hazel I recently read about Jewish Blind & Disabled’s independent living advisor and wondered if they could help us. My daughter will return shortly from university and will be living at home for at least a while. She has cerebral palsy and is a wheelchair user and while she did not mind us doing a lot of things for her in the past, she has now got used to having her independence and is desperate not to go back to relying on us for anything. We are planning to make changes to our downstairs area to create a studio flat for her and would welcome advice on how best to do this

It goes through an automatic repair that takes ages, but still it just starts up again and goes through the same process. I can tell there is something seriously wrong. Can it be fixed? Have I lost my files? Please help. Amanda
Dear Amanda What you have is something we commonly come across with Windows 10 machines and can be caused by many things. Sometimes the automatic repair process completes successfully and the computer starts up just fine but, occasionally, we need to perform some advanced steps. Often, a system restore can put things back to how they were a day or two ago. This resolves issues where an automatic update has caused the problem. Sometimes Windows needs reinstalling in a ‘refresh’ process. This preserves your data, but all the programs etc need reinstalling, and email accounts need to be set up again.

Our independent living advisor could visit your home and discuss the features that you might want to consider including in your daughter’s studio flat, as well as the pitfalls to be avoided. She could also talk you through some useful products that could make a massive difference to your daughter’s ability to maintain her independence. If you are interested, she can also tell you about our developments of state-of-the-art one and two bedroom mobility apartments so that, if and when she decides to move into her own flat, you will have the information you need. that our relatives are declining until something serious happens. Frailty is often something that happens slowly, and we accept it as a new norm until an incident occurs and then we recognise how difficult recovery is from that incident. Frailty can be associated with certain diseases commonly seen in the elderly, as well as a reduction in appetite and activity. When something like a fall happens or an infection sets in, it can trigger frailty. We know increasing frailty can lead to a loss of independence, social isolation and eventually may lead to depression and a general loss of overall wellbeing. In many circumstances, not only physical heal but mental health can change. The most positive way to make small changes one step
at a time is to explore gentle exercise, increasing over time. Making a walk fun by going to favourite places or exercising to favourite music helps to give value to the experience, increasing well-being as well as ability. The grandchildren can often bring so much pleasure in these examples. Diet plays an important role in physical and mental health too. Ensure she eats fruits and vegetables of every colour in the season to contribute to better health. Enjoying pleasant surroundings while eating with others can help. Professionals can help too. This may be a support worker with whom to exercise and prepare and eat meals, or a medical assessment with a specialist older persons consultant.
