‘Sick kids have sinned’ rabbi banned from UK A controversial rabbi who claims sick Jewish children are being punished for sins in a former life was banned from entering Britain last night ahead of a speaking tour of London synagogues, writes Jack Mendel. Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi who has 200,000 followers on social media, was to be hosted by Charedi rabbis in north London, including Rabbi Aharon Bassous in Golders Green – who led a boycott of the JW3 culture centre for encouraging “homosexual activities”. Mizrachi, who declined to respond to requests for comment, has been criticised by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and others for his views, including his claim that fewer than one million halachic Jews were killed in the Holocaust, Down’s Syndrome and autism are punishments for previous sins and blind children are serving penance for watching pornography in a past life. The rabbi, who labels his critics “worse than Hitler”, was due to give three lectures, including one called ‘Defeating the Modern Day Amelek (enemies of Israel)’. Venues include Bassous’s Sephardi synagogue Beth Hamadresh Knesset Yehezkel in Golders Green, a charity whose purpose is “to advance religion in accordance with the orthodox Jewish faith”. Heichal Leah Synagogue in Hendon, which was due to host Mizrachi on Saturday, told Jewish News his schedule had changed and “will not be speaking at the venue after all”. Beit Hamedresh Knesset Yehezkel and Seuda Shlishit Knesset Yehezkel were uncontactable. Rabbi A Home Office spokesYosef Mizrachi person said: “When the purpose of someone’s

visit to this country is to spread hatred, we can and will stop them entering Britain. We uphold free speech but will not let it be used to excuse detestable views that directly contravene our values. We take the threat from extremism seriously and we will challenge it wherever we see it.” David Toube, director of policy at Qulliam, said: “Mizrachi was prevented from boarding his plane to the UK. I applaud the Home Office’s decision and am proud the mainstream Jewish community has been united in its opposition to this man.” In 2016, hundreds signed a petition calling for the rabbi to be banned from the UK as community members and representatives called him a “hate preacher,” but in 2014 he toured the UK lecturing schoolchildren and has been seeking a return. An online petition described Mizrachi’s views as “cultish, divisive and contemptible,” with the former Three Faiths Forum (3FF) director Stephen Shashoua writing that “hate should be given no oxygen” and Jewish sociologist and author Keith Kahn-Harris saying “there is a violence to his views”. In videos posted online, Mizrachi tells Jewish children: “God only want him [the disabled child] here 40 years to suffer. Why? Measure-for-measure. You spoke bad about people in a previous life, now you’re going to feel what it is to live 40 years without being able to say a word.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said: “We condemn all forms of hate speech, regardless of the source. Bigotry is not welcome in our community and that applies to this individual.” Continued on page 8

News / Labour antisemitism

JLM chief wants expulsions A senior executive member of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) this week called for the expulsion of the Labour leadership for “bringing the party into disrepute”. In a devastating column in this week’s Jewish News, councillor Peter Mason, who sits on the national executive committee as national secretary, condemns the leadership for failing to use its power to tackle antisemitism. He writes: “Either the party leadership, which has failed to use its power and position to tackle antisemitism is found out, or they move out. “It would be more fitting however, that they like the antisemites they have sought to protect and defend, should be

expelled from the party for bringing it into such shameful disrepute.” Mason’s remarks came as JLM suspended its antisemitism training for party members while the Equalities

and Human Rights Commission investigates the party for institutional racism. In a statement on Monday night, just after the party announced it was ditching JLM as the group that provides

antisemitism training, the movement said: “We cannot in good faith continue to provide our training while the Party seek to undermine our role in this way. “We will shortly write to all CLPs [constituency Labour parties] and organisations where training is currently scheduled to suspend our involvement. “The party leadership have a choice. They can either address the concerns of its Jewish affiliate and those of the Jewish community. Alternatively, they can continue to act in a reckless and damaging way.” Last week, JLM members agreed at an emergency general meeting to remain affiliated to the party. • Peter Mason, page 18

...as ‘problem’ chair faces leadership battle The chair of the Jewish Labour Movement is to face a challenge to his leadership from multiple sources ahead of a likely new vote on disaffiliating from the party, writes Justin Cohen. Ivor Caplin has confirmed he intends to stand for a second term, but sources have indicated vice-chair Mike Katz will launch a challenge within days. Colin Appleby, who left Labour after the last party conference, told Jewish News he

will also stand. It comes just a week after the group’s members voted overwhelmingly not to end its 99-year affiliation to Labour after pleas from leading Jewish MPs. However, several JLM members have indicated they would be “surprised” if the group’s forthcoming AGM next month does not revisit the idea of disaffiliation. The challenge to Caplin comes amid “frustration, disquiet and disappoint-

ment” within JLM over his performance in the face of the antisemitism crisis over recent months, according to one member who said he hadn’t been strong enough in standing up to the leadership. He faced criticism after appearing to reject claims Corbyn could be called anti-Semitic in a radio interview. He previously provoked anger by meeting General Secretary Jennie Formby alone without consulting colleagues.

Appleby described Caplin as a “problem” who isn’t sufficiently standing up to the leadership. He also backed an immediate “strike” involving the withdrawal of all active support for Labour and would also push for disaffiliation. “JLM no longer has a seat at the table,” he said. “The Leader’s Office don’t care about anything we say. They may cheer if we leave, but I don’t see what there is to be gained from staying.”

NEWS IN BRIEF

MCDONNELL PLEDGE OVER ANTISEMITISM Labour in the past may not have been “good enough” at educating its members on antisemitism, John McDonnell said. The shadow chancellor said a new education programme was being developed by the party’s general secretary, Jenny Formby. This will “ensure that everybody now is educated around the issues of antisemitism in a way maybe we haven’t been good enough in the past,” he said. Working to eradicate the problem is part of Labour’s “mission”, McDonnell added, as he insisted the party was not antisemitic.

LABOUR SUSPENDS ANTI-ISRAEL ACTIVIST Anti-Israel campaigner Asa Winstanley has been suspended from the Labour Party pending an investigation. Winstanley, who writes for the anti-Israel publication the Electronic Intifada, described the Jewish Labour Movement as an “Israel Embassy proxy” after the group called an extraordinary general meetings to debate whether to disaffiliate from Labour. In a tweet, Winstanley said the JLM was responsible for carrying out “shameless sabotage of the party”, adding “this is what Israel terms ‘lawfare’.”

WALKER’S ‘LEGITIMATE BELIEF’ Suspended Labour activist Jackie Walker was defended by a party official who said playing down the Holocaust could be a “legitimately held belief”. Walker faced complaints after writing on Jackie Walker Facebook in February 2016: “Millions more Africans were killed in the African holocaust and their oppression continues today on a global scale in a way it doesn’t for Jews… and many Jews (my ancestors too) were the chief financiers of the sugar and slave trade which is of course why there were so many early shuls in the Caribbean.”

Walker, who was initially suspended from the party, was reinstated after a few weeks. A former vice-chair of Momentum, she now faces another disciplinary hearing on 26 March. The Sunday Telegraph reported Walker’s film Witch Hunt cites emails written by party officials, revealing they were keen to minimise complaints of antisemitic behaviour against her. Using a “subject access request”, Walker obtained an email that said “Jackie has been reinstated” as “it became clear her private conversation was taken completely out of context and that the allegations made had been scurrilous”. Another states: “The African holocaust language could be seen as extremely offensive, but it might also count as clumsy but legitimately held belief.”

Jeremy Corbyn’s top aides intervened personally to ensure a Labour activist accused of antisemitism had a suspension lifted, writes Joe Millis. Seumas Milne, Corbyn’s director of strategy and communications, and fellow inner circle member Andrew Murray demanded the party reinstate Jewish anti-Zionist Glyn Secker after he was kicked out for joining a Facebook group where members posted messages denying the Holocaust and peddled conspiracy theories. Secker was also criticised for heckling a member of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) at Labour’s conference in 2016. However, in a 9 March 2018 email, Murray called for the suspension to be lifted, writing: “JC [Jeremy Corbyn] interested in this one.”

He also reported activist groups such as Labour Against Anti-Semitism fighting Jew-hate as “well dodgy”. Milne defended Secker, writing: “None of the posts can be identified as antisemitic in the Seumas Milne terms of the definition we have adopted as a party.” In another development reported by The Sunday Times, shadow chancellor John McDonnell is heard on tape supporting a woman suspended as a Labour candidate over comments about “Zionist sympathies” of a Jewish MP.

News / Labour antisemitism

Shadow minister ‘sorry’ for sharing hate cartoon Shadow minister for employment Mike Amesbury has apologised “unreservedly” for sharing an antisemitic caricature from a conspiracy website. The MP shared a cartoon on Facebook back in 2013 of a bearded, jeering hook-nosed Father Christmas, taken from a website called Illuminati Agenda.com. The post, which was reported by blogger and Israel activist David Collier, also contained the words: “Remember to support the banks and corporations this Christmas in their continued efforts to enslave mankind, by spending money you haven’t got on

The hooked-nosed Santa cartoon

things you don’t need.” Initially, Amesbury denied sharing the post, writing in a since-deleted post on Tuesday evening: “I did not send this

vile nonsense and never would. “The profile picture is of me and my son when we as a family went to Barcelona in 2015, curious that this claims to be from 2013”. But yesterday morning, Amesbury issued an apology, writing: “I apologise unreservedly for this terrible error. I genuinely don’t recall sharing this image and I’m mortified that I did so. “This appalling image contains an antisemitic caricature and a reference to the ‘illuminati’ conspiracy theory. “I would never have intentionally shared such antisemitic tropes and I am sincerely sorry that I did.”

Labour activist loses expulsion appeal A Scottish activist has lost his appeal against being sacked from the GMB union for claiming the Holocaust was exaggerated. Pete Gregson, who was shop steward for NHS Lothian, was expelled in December after claiming Israel was a “racist endeavour” that “invents”

or “exaggerates” the Nazis’ murder of six million Jews “for political ends”. He claimed blog posts attacking “Israeli apartheid” and activities including signing a petition stating “Israel is a racist endeavour” were not antisemitic, and accused Benjamin Netanyahu of having

“rewritten the GMB rule book”. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) antisemitism definition says calling Israel a ‘racist endeavour’ and making comparisons between Israel and the Nazis is antisemitic. Gregson took legal advice and fought his expulsion in court.

Pete Gregson alongside a member of Neturei Karta

HAMMOND BLASTS PARTY ‘BLINDNESS’ Philip Hammond has accused his Labour counterpart John McDonnell of “turning a blind eye” to antisemitism during his Spring Statement. The chancellor’s remarks came after the Labour frontbencher described the budget speech as a display “of this government’s toxic mix of callous complacency”. Hammond responded: “I take

exception to being lectured to by a man who has stood idly by, turning a blind eye while his leader allowed antisemitism to all but destroy a once great party from the inside out.”

MOMENTUM CHIEF WON’T STEP DOWN Momentum director Christine Shawcroft has refused to step down from her role despite calls from its leadership to do so. The national executive committee (NEC) member had previously quit last March as chairwoman of the party’s disputes panel, after it emerged she had opposed the suspension of a council candidate accused of Holocaust denial.

The Labour activist and supporter of Jeremy Corbyn wrote in a Facebook post that she was asked to stand down but refused over their handling of antisemitism. She also condemned Momentum for withdrawing support for Pete Willsman, a member of the NEC seeking re-election last year, after he was recorded calling members of the Jewish community “Trump fanatics.”

UK pays for ‘terrorist’ daughter’s education The government has sponsored more than 300 Palestinians to study in the UK – including the daughter of a man accused of being a terror ist leader. The statistics, released by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), show 27 Palestinians are currently studying in this country, including 11 from the Gaza Strip, but among recent alumni is Haneen Qatamesh, whose father Ahmed spent years in jail. He was first imprisoned in 1992 and held under administrative detention for six years, a record period, accused of being a leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a group best known for hijacking and attacking Israeli aircraft. The Israeli security service Shin Bet accused him of instigating attacks against Israelis, but Qatamesh’s lawyer said his client was “a writer and politician” engaged in a nonviolent struggle against

Ahmed Qatamesh

Israeli occupation. Qatamesh was arrested again in 2011 and then again in 2017, a year after his daughter came to the UK to study under the Chevening Scholarship Programme, which costs the government almost £60 million per year. In a Chevening blog from 2016, she said she wanted to use her UK studies to take “a proactive role in developing the education sector and implement projects that will grant Palestinian youth’s development as well as restoring hope in a better future”.

However five years earlier, in an article for Electronic Intifada, she called Israelis “criminals” who “steal land”, adding: “I will continue to dream of Palestinian freedom. Along the way, I will continue to expose the brutality of Israel’s occupation.” Qatamesh described how Israeli soldiers had come looking for her father, “invaded my home, held hostages all those present and forced me at gunpoint to call my father… This is standard operating procedure for Israeli occupation forces”. The student figures were released by an FCO spokeswoman last week and shed new light on the Chevening Programme, which is designed to build relations with “future leaders”. The department said the objective of Chevening was “to support foreign policy priorities and achieve FCO objectives by creating lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers”.

TAMIMI ‘TO STUDY IN UK’ The young Palestinian woman jailed for slapping two Israeli soldiers during a raid on her house has told a Jordanian media outlet she plans to study English in the UK for three months. Ahed Tamimi, who became the poster child for Palestinian resistance, plans to study international law to fight for Palestinian rights internationally, and said a three-month crash course in the English language would help. In December 2017, aged 16, Tamimi was filmed hitting soldiers in a video that went viral. She said she was deprived of sleep and food during her interrogation and signed a plea deal, admitting to assault, incitement and two counts of obstructing soldiers. She was jailed along with her mother. Both were released in late July. After her UK study, the young activist from

ROSEANNE BLAMES ANTI-ZIONIST PLOT

SINATRA’S DRUMMER HAL BLAINE DIES AT 90

FA INVESTIGATION INTO FANS’ HATE CHANTS

Roseanne Barr said she was sacked from her self-titled sitcom as the result of an antisemitic, anti-Zionist conspiracy – saying “they wanted to take a Jew down”. The actress, 66, has insisted she is not a racist following her comment about Valerie Jarrett, a former adviser to Barack Obama. She told The Sunday Times Magazine: “I should have written it backwards. It came out dyslexic.” Barr’s show was axed after she referred to Jarrett as a product of the “Muslim Brotherhood and the Planet Of The Apes”.

Hal Blaine, a Hall of Fame drummer who played on the songs of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys has died at the age of 90. Blaine died of natural causes at his home in Palm Desert, California, according to his son-in-law Andy Johnson. The son of Jewish immigrants, Blaine was born Harold Simon Belsky in Holyoke, Massachusetts. By the age of eight, he was already drumming, using a pair of dowels he removed from a seat in the living room. He turned professional at 20.

The Football Association is investigating after Southampton supporters allegedly used antisemitic chants during a match against Tottenham Hotspur. Fans reportedly sung about Auschwitz and gas chambers, including ‘get in the showers’. Kick It Out, an antidiscrimination charity that works to eradicate hate from the beautiful game, said it: “We are disappointed that yet again another case of alleged antisemitic abuse has been reported to us.”

Deputies debate / Student vote / News NEWS IN BRIEF

FRANKLIN IS NEW KISHARON CHIEF Kisharon has appointed a new chief executive. Richard Franklin, a warden at Highgate Synagogue in his spare time, served as acting chief executive and director of fundraising and communications during his six-year tenure at the charity. He said: “Kisharon is a remarkable and unique organisation which it has been my privilege to serve. I’m looking forward to working with our excellent trustee board, senior leadership team and staff ... to ensure everyone impacted by this wonderful charity can learn, develop and grow together.”

IMMANUEL NAMES NEW DEPUTY HEAD Claire Shooter has been appointed the new deputy head of Immanuel College in Bushey, following Beth Kerr’s departure. Shooter, head of Year 7 girls and Spanish, has previously served as assistant head of sixth form, head of young enterprise and head of upper school PSHE for Years 10 and 11. She holds a first class honours degree in Hispanic studies from the University of Birmingham and a PGCE from the University of Herfordshire. Headteacher Gary Griffin said: “We wish Mrs Shooter all the best as she begins her new role next term.”

Board split on taking a stand on Israel vote The Board of Deputies faced a split in its ranks this week with calls to both condemn and refrain from commenting on Benjamin Netanyahu’s deal with a far-right fringe party ahead of next month’s election. The deal would see the nationalist-religious Bayit Yehudi take in Otzma Yehudit ahead of April elections, provoking outrage and concern in the UK. Around 50 deputies from across the political spectrum urged the Jewish group to condemn the views and policies of Otzma Yehudit in a letter. It reads: “We, the undersigned deputies condemn legitimising the views and policies of Otzma Yehudit party,” it reads. The Board of DepuBenjamin ties is committed to the core Netanyahu

values of Israel’s democratic and Jewish character and committed to supporting the complete equality of social and political rights for all Israeli citizens, regardless of characteristics such as religion, race or sex, as envisioned in Israel’s Declaration of Independence. “It is imperative for the Board of Deputies to make a statement condemning this deal in order to provide moral leadership for our community.” Among the signatories are Gillian Moonman, Laurence Julius, Natalie Shaw, Gary Mond, Jacob Lyons and Johnathan Metliss. In response, 32 deputies signed a counter letter urging the Board to refrain from commenting on Marie the Israeli election. van der Zyl

The event was organised with Jewish-Muslim women’s network The Nisa-Nashim group with Wes Streeting MP in Parliament Nisa-Nashim.

LEEDS STUDENTS VOTE DOWN ANTISEMITISM MOTION A panel of students from Leeds University Union has voted down a motion to combat antisemitism by 10 to five in an atmosphere described as “intimidating”. Student Emma Jacobs, who proposed the motion, told Jewish News: “We put forward the motion because we believe all students deserve to feel safe on campus and Jewish students shouldn’t be an exception to this.” The motion called for Leeds University to hold an annual Holocaust Memorial Day to remember victims and run educational events on issues around antisemitism and the Shoah. The proposals, which also involves adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition of antisemitism and ensuring sabbatical officers have training on tackling antisemitism, will be put to a campuswide referendum. Leeds Jewish Society said: “The forum involved sniggering and some students asking us to withdraw the motion in full or amend it.” A University of Leeds spokesperson said: “Every student on the panel was clear that antisemitism is wholly unacceptable. “The disagreement was about the formal definition of antisemitism. The university is committed to promoting and encouraging free debate – including the definition of antisemitism – and we are confident we have a robust policy on freedom of expression.”

Charity donates anti-hair loss cap A breast cancer charity founded by a Jewish mother and her daughter after suffering the effects of cancer is to donate a cap designed to prevent hair loss in chemotherapy patients to a hospital. The charity, called Future Dreams, will give the equipment, which helps prevent hair loss for chemotherapy patients, to North Middlesex Hospital next week, The machine is a scalp cooling cap made from silicone, which alleviates damage caused to the hair follicle by chemotherapy by ensuring it remains at a constant temperature. “This is truly wonderful news,” said Dr Fharat Raja, consultant medical oncologist at North Middlesex Hospital. “I can’t thank Future Dreams and the trustees enough for this hugely generous donation. “The patients at North Middlesex Hospital will be delighted to have the option of preserving their hair, and it is also fantastic for the staff to be able to offer patients the best supportive care.” The founders of Future Dreams, mother and daughter Sylvie Henry and Danielle Leslie, set up the charity in 2008 following their diagnoses.

Sylvie Henry and Danielle Leslie set up breast cancer charity Future Dreams

The idea was hatched around a kitchen table where a group of Leslie’s friends had come together to raise money for breast cancer research. Leslie died from secondary breast cancer, aged 40, just months after her mum lost her battle against incurable lung cancer in 2009 aged 60. Leslie is survived by her husband Spencer, who remains a trustee of the charity, and their three children, Ben, Joe and Amy.

MUSWELL HILL GROUP MEET THEIR KIEV TWINS Some 14 children from Muswell Hill Synagogue travelled with their families to visit schools in the Ukranian capital and take part in a Shoah memorial service at Babi Yar. They met with students they each had been paired with, dubbed their “twin”, from the Kiev ORT Educational Complex no.141 and The Jewish State Educational Complex. Children took part in various workshops, including challah making, Israeli dance, mask making and robotics. It was organised by the

charity ORT UK as part of its bar and batmitzvah twinning programme, which has been running for three years. The year-long programme features mandatory sessions on Jewish culture, history and identity and a social action and fundraising project.

Julia Kozyr, a parent from Kiev, said: “I’m deeply grateful for this wonderful opportunity to meet the twins’ families from London. “It was a pleasure to meet everyone, to get to know each other better and to see we have so much in common.”

Charity Commission quiz shul Continued from page 1 Yesterday, it emerged the Charity Commission has contacted one of the synagogues due to host Mizrachi. The watchdog told Jewish News it will consult Beth Hamedrash Knesset

Yehezkel in Golders Green, whose rabbi is controversial Charedi leader, Rabbi Aharon Bassous. The Charity Commission said: “We will be engaging with the trustees of Beth Hamedrash Knesset

Chief: Dayan saga ‘shameful’ The Chief Rabbi has spoken of the “shameful episode” that saw the resignation of a former dayan of the London Beth Din. Dayan Yonason Abraham (pictured) stepped down to the

Beth Din and the Hendon shul he helped found in recent days, saying he had “fallen short of the standards expected” and was “deeply sorry I have let you down”.

Having trouble with your Varifocals?

In a forthright and unprecedented message to rabbis under his auspices, Ephraim Mirvis, he said: “The London Beth Din is one of the oldest and most respected Batei Din in the world. To have discovered that one of our dayanim had, in his own words, “fallen short of the standards expected” of him, has shaken us to the core. When one of us fails in this manner, we are all greatly diminished. “A Beth Din must be unimpeachable in its embodiment

of Torah values – anything less is entirely unacceptable. “It was for this reason that I, together with Dayan Gelley and the United Synagogue, ensured the matter was dealt with so swiftly.

“This shameful episode has been met by many with disbelief and has caused great pain. In addition, there are innocent family members who have been directly affected and whose lives have been devastated by it. As a community we have a responsibility to look after them, to respect their privacy and to offer appropriate support.” He added he had faith in the community’s capacity to come through this “painful ordeal”. The dayan said in a letter

to Toras Chaim Synagogue congregants he had been under “exceptional strain and stress for some time which has taken its inevitable toll. “I have spent my life helping others including some wonderful friends and supporters in this kehillah (congregation) of which I am proud. I now need to help myself and my family.” He thanked the community for the kindness it had shown him and his wife and insisted it must “remain strong and united”.

The Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and its division Lead hosted a series of panel discussions about gender equality in the Jewish community to mark this year’s International Women’s Day. Chief executives, leaders and staff from different organisations were among the 60 participants. The day, which featured three debates and Q&A sessions, ended with a panel discussion on how the #MeToo movement affected the lives of women in the Jewish community in the workplace and beyond.

LONDON’S MOST EXCITING FAMILY DAY RETURNS!

Topics ranged from the importance of duty of care in creating safe workplaces for Jewish women to the panellists’ experiences of gender roles in the community. The JLC says it has noted suggestions by panellists and participants which could help improve the lives of Jewish women in the workplace. JLC policy and public affairs director Claudia Mendoza said “We are pleased to be leading the way in creating the space for conversations on how we can better balance policy and culture for women.”

World News/ Jerusalem attack / Palestinian appointment / Plane crash / Eurovision hopes

Temple Mount closed after firebomb attack Israeli police closed the entrances to Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site this week after Palestinian suspects threw a firebomb at a police station. There were no injuries reported from the firebombing, but police quickly deployed across the hilltop compound, scuffling with Palestinians in the area as they searched for the assailants. Three suspects were arrested and police were seen wrestling a woman to the ground. The incident heightened tensions at the site, which is revered by Jews as the Temple Mount and by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary. The Western Wall is the last supporting wall of the Temple Mount, and is the centre for Jewish prayer from around the world. The spot, home to the AlAqsa Mosque and gold-topped Dome of the Rock, is a frequent flashpoint of violence.

KOBI FEELING RIGHT AT HOME The song Israel hopes will deliver back-to-back Eurovision victories was officially released this week. Kobi Marimi’s Home will represent the country in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest taking place in Tel Aviv in May. The 27-year-old won the honour after coming first in reality television show The Next Star.

PALESTINIANS NAME NEW PM Israeli police survey the scene after the attack

Police also restricted entrance to the Old City, home to Jerusalem’s most important religious sites, allowing only residents to pass through certain entrances to the Muslim and Christian quarters. Other entrances to the Old City remained open. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas denounced the “dangerous Israeli escalation” and warned of “serious repercussions”. In a statement, he called on the international community to intervene.

The area has experienced a series of tense stand-offs in recent weeks after Muslim worshippers reopened an area known as the Gate of Mercy, closed by Israel in 2003. The Waqf, a Jordanianappointed body that oversees Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, has staged periodic prayer-protests since late February to call for the reopening of the building. Israel closed the structure claiming it was used by a heritage organisation with ties to Hamas.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed as prime minister a Fatah Party insider who was educated abroad. Mohammad Shtayyeh, a longtime Abbas ally, was announced on Sunday as the new prime minister. He replaces Rami Hamdallah, who had been prime minister since 2014. Shtayyeh, a member of the central committee of the Palestinian president’s Fatah party, will form a new government.

Mohammad Shtayyeh

An economist, Shtayyeh earned a PhD in development at Sussex University in Britain

in the 1980s. He served as a peace negotiator for the Palestinians with Israel in 1991 and again in 2013-14 and is a supporter of the two-state solution. He has also expressed criticism of the terror organisation Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. His appointment comes after multiple attempts for reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas have failed. It is seen as an attempt to further isolate Hamas. Hamas has announced it will not recognise Shtayyeh.

Israel offers Ethiopia aid Israel this week offered assistance to the Ethiopian government following last weekend’s crash near Addis Ababa of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737, killing all 157 people on board. Two Israelis, seven Britons and eight Americans were among the 149 passengers. The dead were of at least 32 nationalities and there were eight crew members. The cause of the crash has not been identified but the head of the airline told reporters the pilot sent out a distress call and was given clearance to return. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “I would like to send condolences to the government and people of Ethiopia, and to the families of the victims who perished in the plane crash.. “If there is anything we can do, we are – of course – ready to do it. We have also said this to the Ethiopian government.”

Shul killer gets life A Belgian court this week sentenced French Islamist Mehdi Nemmouche to life imprisonment for murdering four people in a terrorist attack at the Brussels Jewish Museum in 2014. Nemmouche’s accomplice, Nacer Bendrer, was also found guilty of aiding the attacker and sentenced to 15 years in prison. World Jewish Congress’ executive vice president Robert Singer said it “at last brings a semblance of justice to the loved ones of those who were so brutally murdered on 24 May 2014, and to the Jewish community as a whole”. The victims of the attack were Israeli tourists on holiday in Belgium as well as a volunteer worker and a receptionist. During the trial, Nemmouche’s defence team pro-

NEWS IN BRIEF

‘ANNA’S WAR’ WINS BEST FILM TROPHY Anna’s War, Aleksey Fedorchenko’s wartime feature film about a Jewish girl whose family was killed by the Nazis in 1941, has gained Russia’s Golden Eagle award, the equivalent of the Oscars, for Best Motion Picture and Best Director. The film tells the true story of a terrified six-year-old whose family is murdered in a mass execution, miraculously survives and hides for more than two years in a disused fireplace in a Nazi commandant’s office, until her village is liberated. Fedorchenko said the film was based on a short story he found online of an older woman talking about her childhood.

moted the idea of a conspiracy theory and claimed the four were Mossad operatives.

Singer added: “It is regrettable that this trial was replete with unbelievable conspiracy

theories and demonisation of Israel on the part of certain attorneys and the suspect.

The jury took two days to deliberate in the trial of Mehdi Nemmouche, who has been found guilty of the 2014 Brussels Jewish Museum terror attack. Why did it take them so long? The thrust of the defence argument lay in the identity of one of the victims, Israeli Miriam Riva, who Israeli authorities said she worked for Mossad as an accountant. She and her husband, Emmanuel, also an accountant, were killed in an 82-second burst of fire, along with a receptionist and volunteer. The defence argued that if the attack were terrorism, the shooter would have continued shooting and said it was a targeted hit on Mossad agents, orchestrated by someone using their client as a fall guy. The trial heard Nemmouche had returned from Syria as a radicalised ISIS fighter, was deeply antisemitic according to

his captors, had sought to obtain a high-powered rifle from a fellow Frenchman before the attack and was arrested with a computer containing six videos of him claiming responsibility. French journalists testified he had been one of their ISIS captors and torturers in Syria. Nemmouche told the court he had been “tricked” or “trapped”. The Rivas’ family, Belgian prosecutors and Jewish community leaders rubbished the idea. Belgium’s Coordinating Committee of Jewish Organisations called it a “nauseating conspiracy theory”. The jury considered the Mossad angle before finally voting guilty. By what margin is unknown, but the verdict cannot be appealed. If Nemmouche could have revealed “the truth” about who really killed this Israeli couple, as he and his lawyer suggested, that time has passed.

More than 500 Russian-speaking Londoners attended a weekend of lectures, meetings, masterclasses, plays and concerts with famous Russian journalists, writers and actors last week. Most popular was an event with writer Lyudmila Ulitskaya and two plays, Marienbad, based on the book by Sholem Aleichem and Hello, However… based on Veniamin Smekhov’s book about Vladimir Vysotsky, the life story of the legendary Russian-Jewish poet and actor. There was also a special programme for children. Literary critic Galina Yuzefovich talked about Jewish reflections in the books of modern Russian writers. Judaism educator Pinchas Polonsky touched upon the history of Kabbalah and how it

impacted the Jewish people. Yulia Patrakova, Galina Aksenova and Andrey Borovsky discussed Jewish contributions to the cinema and fine arts, as well as the Jewish symbols and themes that perceptive viewers can distinguish in these works today. The festival was opened by Ilia Salita, president and CEO of the Genesis Philanthropy Group, the main supporter of the project. He said: “With the growing number of Russian-speaking Jews who choose London as the place to live and grow their families, it is very important to foster exciting opportunities for them to engage with Jewish heritage and culture and to do so in a modern and interactive way. In our opinion, Arbuzz J-Fest does exactly that.”

Jewish News meets... Joanna Landau

Woman on a mission to show Israel to the world

I

f anyone is well placed to talk about the frequently difficult relationship between Israel and the diaspora – how we see Israel, how Israel sees us – it’s Joanna Landau, writes Jenni Frazer. Born in the UK, she has been shuttling between Britain and Israel since she was five. Today, Landau, who, among other things, is Dame Shirley Porter’s granddaughter, is the founder and chief executive of a remarkable initiative called Vibe Israel. Its mission is to figure out how to “sell” Israel in a completely different way from the hoary hasbarah strategies of old. Backed by ruthless research, Vibe Israel looks at rebranding the Jewish state to accentuate the positive. Landau is 45, married with three children, and lives in Tel Aviv. After sixth form at Carmel College, she read law at Girton College, Cambridge, but says she decided to live in Israel only when she returned to do her army service.

Joanna Landau with President Rivlin at the launch of Vibe Israel

Ten years ago, she began to reassess her life. “I began to think about perception and reality when it comes to Israel, and to wonder why there were not more conversations about how we feel about the country.” Initially she looked at Israel advocacy, but was not convinced that “explaining Israel’s policies improves Israel’s image”. She was aware of a Foreign Ministry programme to develop Hasbarah using marketing and branding, but this never really

took off. Instead, Landau decided to create “influencer marketing” for Israel. She explains: “Every country does some sort of marketing for itself, whether in tourism or trade. But Israel didn’t really have it”. To begin, Vibe Israel, funded by private donations, took groups of “influencers” to the country for a week at a time. “We would bring, for example, mummy bloggers, from Britain, France, and Spain, to showcase family life,” Landau says. “We

ran about 40 tours for people from, eventually, 30 countries. Mothers would meet mothers or people starting small ‘kitchen-table’ companies such as making nappy bags. The idea was to get people to Israel to meet like-minded counterparts, not dignitaries.” Success was measured in the level of engagement or social media mentions. Eventually it became apparent “there was a way of marketing Israel that was not about the conflict”. Examples, says Landau, are Eurovision, last year’s Giro d’Italia cycling race, or the global success of Gal Gadot as Hollywood’s Wonder Woman. Vibe Israel hired specialist company Bloom Consulting to interview defined groups around the world about perceptions of Israel. The results were fascinating, says Landau, and form the backdrop to her company’s future work. The main three groups were Generation Z (respondents aged 14-21), millennials (those aged 22- 38), and

mothers. In one set of questions, British respondents were asked if they had heard of the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement; only six percent of the Generation Z group had. The numbers for millennials and mums were equally low – 18 percent and 14 percent. That’s pleasing, but placing Israel against other countries, UK mothers gave the least positive views and both the millennials and Generation Z placed Israel very low. Landau and her team are still digesting the survey results and trying to apply them to a strategic way of presenting Israel to the world. But she is sure of one thing: “We should be showing the entire range of what Israel represents. The majority of respondents didn’t know what Israel does best, or what was cool about the country.” There is, Landau concludes, “a huge missing element in the way in which Israel presents itself. It deserves great marketing”.

DRAW THE RIGHT CONCLUSION So, letter writer Kay Bagon thought your cartoon suggesting Shamima Begum is not welcome anywhere other than the moon was in poor taste (Jewish News, 8 March). No doubt she would share a platform with Diane Abbott, who blames the home secretary for the death of Ms Begum’s baby. Shamima Begum chose the pitiful life which she presently finds herself in. She could have chosen to stay in Bethnal Green, where her baby would have enjoyed excellent treatment at the Royal London Hospital. But instead she chose a vile life dedicated to a repugnant terror group, devoid of all humanity, which engages in the slaughter of adults and children alike, beheadings, the rape of women and girls and the suppression of human rights, and which would like nothing more than to exterminate all Jews and other non-Muslims.

YOM HA’ATZMAUT LEGACY MISSION 2019

‘Having a Jewish backstop is like the Irish backstop. You can’t get out!’

Even as an adult, Ms Begum expressed no regret for choosing her life with ISIS, nor did she have much sympathy for the British teenagers blown up at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, which she saw as a reasonable tit-for-tat action by terrorist. I would like to make Kay Bagon a public offer. I will pay for her to take a flight to Syria so that she can travel to the last remaining ISIS stronghold and see conditions for herself. If she is treated with humanity, I will be the first to offer her a public apology in your paper. The only condition I attach is that she must tell them that she is Jewish. I hope she does not mind if I save some money by booking her a one-way flight. She won’t be needing a return ticket.

THE JLM’S NAME IS NOW A CONTRADICTION IN TERMS Who in the Jewish Labour Movement, one wonders, is kidding whom? Aside from the fact the very name of the organisation is now a contradiction in terms, it is a mystery just where the “140 Labour MPs who signed a letter supporting JLM and urging it not to disaffiliate” (as reported in Jewish News last week) have been over the past few months. Despite the frantic twisting and turning of the likes of John McDonnell and his ilk, it is quite apparent the rank and file go along with Corbyn’s sickening sentiments, or else why are they still there? “Fighting from within”

sounds very noble but being in with a chance to sample the rewards of being in power sounds even better. Tories in disarray, voter dissatisfaction with the present hapless prime minister – it could happen. The longer the likes of JLM waffle and procrastinate over what is happening right in front of them, the higher the chances of Labour seizing power are. “This is not the time to leave. This is the time to increase our efforts,” says MP Louise Ellman. Tell me – what efforts exactly are we talking about here?

Editorial comment and letters

Why criticism is good You published letters in your 7 March edition objecting to Jews outside Israel criticising the Jewish state. Barry Maltz, for example, suggests we would do better to direct our comments to regimes such as Syria and Iran. Surely no state, organisation or individual should be exempt from critical comment, reasonably and thoughtfully expressed.

We do our support for Israel damage by stating that it is totally unconditional. Under Netanyahu’s leadership, there is ample ground for querying some of his actions. It is to Israel’s credit that she has a democracy that permits criticism of its government by its own citizens – a feature singularly lacking among its neighbours.

THE BERESHEET MIRACLE As Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, might have said (but didn’t): “Now follow that!” Last week, Israel made a pretty good try at following that by arranging for the Beresheet spacecraft now on its way to the lunar surface to send back a selfie from 23,360 miles from Earth. Hopefully further glory is to follow and to be honest a photo from space is a minor achievement compared with Armstrong’s feat. But it is worth its place in history because it caught the public imagination. As America’s Nasa space agency found to its cost during the Apollo programme, this a difficult thing to maintain. So full

marks to the Beresheet team as we await the hoped-for 11 April lunar touchdown.

No room on Trigger’s broom for Labour Jews RICHARD FERRER EDITOR, JEWISH NEWS

A

buse victims are often the last to recognise their plight, kidding themselves things will change. This tragic delusion was evident last week when the Jewish Labour Movement decided to stay in a malign marriage with an emotionally distant spouse who secretly wants a divorce. Jeremy Corbyn, the old charmer that he is, pretended he wanted to save the marriage (“it is my heartfelt wish you... retain the historic relationship you’ve have had with the party for almost a century”), while forgetting to mention he’d previously called for its predecessor to be kicked out the party. Many fine words were spoken by many fine people at the emergency meeting. MP Ruth Smeeth, accused of working “hand-inhand” with the media to undermine Corbyn, pleaded: “I need you. We need you.” MP Dame Louise Ellman, called “the member for Tel Aviv” by Corbyn’s clique, urged: “It’s time to increase our efforts in this fight.”

MP Dame Margaret Hodge, who faced deselection after calling her leader an antisemite to his face, asked members to “look at the bigger picture… Labour has been around 100 years but Jeremy Corbyn has been leader for only three-and-a-half years”. There are few sadder sights than Jewish Labour members justifying their existence in a party that loathes them. Some 80 percent of current members of the Labour Party joined under Corbyn. Give your head a scratch and think about that. Its leadership, membership and ideology has transformed from head to toe. The Labour Party is Trigger’s broom. It’s intolerant of internal dissent, takes no prisoners and eats the wounded. Labour is now a party whose General Secretary Jennie Formby can, with a straight face, tell Deputy Leader Tom Watson not to monitor antisemitism in the party because of GDPR regulations. It’s a party whose leadership meddles in the outcome of antisemitism complaints, refused to back a UK ban on terror group Hezbollah and failed to tell police about violent threats to its Jewish MPs.

THERE ARE FEW SADDER SIGHTS THAN JLM JUSTIFYING ITS EXISTENCE IN THE LABOUR PARTY A party whose leader doesn’t have a bad word to say about Holocaust deniers and hate preachers and has been paid a fortune by the Iranians and Russians to peddle filthy conspiracy theories on their propaganda TV channels. It’s a party that’s hounded out its very best and welcomed the very worst. That lost Luciana Berger on the day it won Derek Hatton. Corbyn is not a classically trained antisemite, but behaves like one none the less. In his every interaction with the Jewish community, he looks like a man standing in his own shadow, wondering why it’s dark. Many Labour Jews still like to think he’s

capable of a long dark night of the soul. That he can engage in genuine conversation and think things through. That he’s still a work in progress rather than a piece of work. Three years after the risible Chakrabarti report into Labour antisemitism, which has been practically disowned by its eponymous author (the honourable baroness has ignored my last four requests to discuss its impact), the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is poised to rule if Labour has “discriminated against ethnicity and religious beliefs” in its treatment of Jews. The EHRC moves at the speed of a tectonic plate but is capable of sparking a political earthquake – resignations among Corbyn’s top brass and sounding the death knell of Labour as a mainstream party. Meanwhile, JLM members will get another chance to flee their sham marriage at next month’s AGM, being held nine days after the UK is due to exit the EU. The prospect of a post-Brexit general election should sharply focus their minds on a stark and simple choice – finally file for divorce or enable their abuser to walk into Downing Street.

Labour’s leadership should be expelled PETER MASON

NATIONAL SECRETARY, JEWISH LABOUR MOVEMENT

R

eflecting over the past three years ahead of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM)’s AGM, it is hard to believe what has become of the Labour Party. Luciana Berger resigned; the party is dogged by a culture of antisemitism, obfuscation and denial that has grown to such proportions, and a leadership now shown to have consistently intervened in disciplinary cases to protect and defend antisemites. With the party now having confirmed that it has dumped JLM from providing antisemitism awareness training, in the wake of our decision to stay and fight antisemitism from within the party, it is hard to envisage how this can be fixed. Each day brings news a new shame. For Jewish Labour members, who have joined both the Labour Party and JLM to express their Jewish values alongside political action, the alternative can be too difficult to imagine. The Labour Party, and the ideals it purports to uphold are, for many, the core

of their identity. To be without a political vehicle through which they can actively change Britain and the world for the better is, as both the psalm and the poem go, to give up building Jerusalem. To lose a right arm. Imagining life beyond the Labour Party is hard. But the overwhelming feeling of members at the extraordinary general meeting last week was that the party has changed so much as to be unrecognisable to those of us who have seen and studied the history of our century-long affiliation. The mood was not one of acquiescence to the party leadership as they themselves were briefing out to journalists that evening, but of pure defiance in the face of what feels like overwhelming odds. A depressing realisation that it isn’t that Jewish Labour members wish to leave the Labour Party of equality and social justice, but that the Labour Party under the current leadership has left us. In the wake of the last summer, of the ‘Trump supporting fanatic rabbis’ slur, of the caveats and the redefinitions of antisemitism, of the Dayenu rally, JLM made a gut-wrenching decision. Collating the

experiences of our members, we referred the party so many of us have loved and respected, to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), asking them to investigate institutional racism. We held this decision discreetly, not wishing to undermine in any way the attempt to secure an independent inquiry, with the ability to demand documents and access to witnesses to uncover the truth. This is the final warning. There can be no return to business as usual. No more excuses by the party leadership on why actions never follow words. No more obfuscation the scale of the challenge. No more engagement with those who so clearly do not wish to engage with us. No more training. No more campaigning for those who refuse to show us

solidarity. No more hope of restoring trust in those who have broken it time after time. Over the next few weeks, it is expected that the EHRC will probe the party, testing its sincerity, systems and processes to identify if the party has acted unlawfully, then deciding on further action to uncover what we believe to be lies, corruption and coverups. There are few tenable conclusions to this sordid affair. Either the party leadership, which has failed to use its power and position to tackle antisemitism is found out, or they move out. It would be more fitting however, if they – like the antisemites they have sought to protect and defend – are expelled from the party for bringing it into such shameful disrepute.

Israel is a country for all – only when it suits Bibi JENNI FRAZER

I

n just a few weeks’ time, on 9 April, Israel, once again, goes to the polls. And, for the first time in many years, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not so secure – I might even say “smugly” secure, because at times I think he believes himself to be prime minister for life. This time, despite last-minute kicking and screaming to try to stop it being announced before the election, Bibi is asking the Israeli public to vote for him while facing a number of serious charges of corruption. Readers may recall that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was also facing charges of bribery and corruption while in office. He stood down to fight the charges, an attempt that failed and he was jailed. But whatever one might think of Olmert – and those who attended the Zionist Federation dinner in London last month had plenty of time to make up their minds about him – at least he wasn’t serving as both prime minister and defence minister

at the same time. Bibi, who is doing just that, has only recently given up the foreign minister portfolio as well. I make no comment on the charges themselves, other than to observe that it’s a fairly cavalier attitude to take, to defend them at one remove, so to speak, all while continuing to claim to Israelis that he is the only person who can run the country. Additionally, Bibi is facing a much more serious challenge than he is used to, in the four-person Blue and White centrist coalition, consisting of Yair Lapid and three ex-chiefs of the IDF staff – Benny Gantz, Gabi Mizrachi, and Moshe Ya’alon. The latter is a former defence minister who resigned from Bibi’s government in 2016. Bibi has form, of course, in scaremongering to Israelis. At the eleventh hour, before the last elections in 2015, he announced that Arabs were “streaming in droves to the polling station”, and claimed that “the left”, that amorphous mass used by the right to terrify

BIBI SANK TO A NEW LOW THIS WEEK BY PRONOUNCING THAT THE STATE OF ISRAEL ONLY BELONGS TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE the population, was bringing Arabs in buses, to vote. Which, if it even had a smidgen of truth about it, so what? The prime minister’s default position is to accuse his opponents of making some sort of deal with “the Arabs”, and currently claims that Blue and White can only win with the support of the Arab bloc. Distasteful as this is – and, remember, this is the same man who brokered a hard-right alliance with the Kahanist extremists of Otzma Yehudit – Bibi sank to a new low this week by pronouncing that the state of Israel only belongs to the Jewish people. This was his response to a social media comment by actress Rotem Sela, who wrote

that Israel is a country of all its citizens. She wrote: “When the hell will someone in this government broadcast to the public that Israel is a country for all its citizens. And every person was born equal. Arabs, too, God help us, are human beings. And so are the Druze. And so are gays, by the way, and lesbians, and… shock…leftists.” Bibi is gambling – with events such as Eurovision – on just such a “rainbow nation” set of criteria to sell Israel to the outside world. So it’s a country of all its citizens when it suits him, and a country only for Jews when it doesn’t. I hope Israelis have an appropriate response to this charlatan approach on 9 April. Otherwise, they deserve Bibi.

Denying occupation alienates young Jews GUY DOMB

STUDENT ACTIVIST, YACHAD

L

ast week I attended a talk by Merphie Bubis of Breaking the Silence organised by my Jewish Society in partnership with Yachad, at Manchester University. Bubis, who served in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) for two years, shared experiences from her military service as well as testimonies by other ex-soldiers to Israeli non-governmental organisation Breaking the Silence (BtS). This group of former soldiers collects and publishes testimonies about the mundane, day-to-day reality in the Occupied Territories (OT). The students welcomed the opportunity to learn about the military occupation of the West Bank from Israeli soldiers who experienced it first-hand. The purpose of the talk was for ex-IDF soldiers to recount their experiences of maintaining the occupation so diaspora Jews could better understand its effects on Palestinians and Israelis. Unfor-

tunately, the co-chair of North West Friends of Israel (NWFOI), Raphi Bloom, considers these former soldiers a threat. He attended the student event, after which he unleashed a torrent of criticism, misrepresenting it. Jewish students who want to see peace in Israel-Palestine make an effort to learn about the region’s many complex issues, including the occupation. Organisations that deny its existence, and are hostile to anyone who tries to talk about it, drive young Jews further away. Bloom and NWFOI struggle to have a genuine conversation about the reality of occupation. He accuses Bubis of telling a “shocking lie” about a 2014 incident when settlers of the Esh Kodesh outpost attacked Palestinian residents of the Qusra village. This story that Bloom claims is “not backed up by newspaper reports at the time” was covered by major Israeli newspapers including Yedioth Ahronoth and Haaretz. Bloom’s account of the talk would suggest he struggled to understand the complexities in Merphie’s testimony. He claimed she stated that ‘most settlers are religious and that they

EX SOLDIERS SERVE ISRAEL BY OPPOSING WHAT TAKES PLACE refuse to condemn settler vandalism carried out against Palestinians on Shabbat.’ Merphie clearly stated there are many reasons why people decide to settle and did not make a statement that would imply that the majority of settlers refused to condemn the attack. His claim that Merphie stated clearly ‘the IDF has a policy to shoot Palestinian youth who are running away’ is simply not the case. She said there seems to be a conflation of policies on different occasions regarding what to do with Palestinians who attempt to escape, which can, on occasion, lead to soldiers opening fire on escapees. She gave the example of the case of Col. Yisrael Shomerm who shot

dead Mohammed Ali al-Kasbeh after the 17-year-old hurled a stone at Shomer’s vehicle. The fact Bloom suggests the occupied territories are considered to be disputed territories by many highlights his unwillingness to properly engage with what was being said. This is a position held by a minority of people who seek to uphold and justify a 51-year occupation. Bloom relies on misleading legal terms to deny the events in the West Bank. He says the vast majority of Palestinians live under the Palestinian Authority, which is true, but conveniently omits that the IDF is still allowed to enter into Area A. He ignores the fact that, owing to massive population growth, there is a lack of land for Palestinians to move into. Bloom’s article, The Enemy From Within, describes the non-violent activists who, unlike Bloom, put their lives on the line to serve in the OT. These ex-soldiers are still fighting to serve their country, and do so as Israeli citizens who wish the country to end the occupation. According to Bloom’s world view, young Jews can either support his vision of Israel, or be branded as friends of its enemies.

Have we failed to teach lessons of the Holocaust? OLIVIA MARKS-WOLDMAN & TRUDY GOLD

T

he events that led to the Holocaust were complex, but one thing is certain: one of the major factors was the 2,000-year-old tradition of Jew-hate. Despite all the efforts of many excellent organisations active in Holocaust education today, antisemitism is at an alarming level. Do we expect too much? And is teaching the Holocaust really able to cure antisemitism? We are confident that most readers of Jewish News will know that approximately six million Jews were murdered. How widely known do you think this figure is, among the general UK population? We were surprised to find that 64 percent of respondents to a poll commissioned by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) did not know the answer – with the majority of respondents either grossly underestimating the numbers or not even hazarding a guess. This figure is in line with similar research and polls conducted in Europe and America on

the general population’s understanding of the Holocaust. In the US, a survey last year showed that 66 percent of millennials could not identify what Auschwitz was, and a CNN poll found that a third of respondents knew ‘just a little or nothing at all’ about the Holocaust. In France, an astonishing 20 percent of 18-34 year-olds said they had never heard of the Holocaust. Although we think this central fact of the Holocaust, the six million victims, is universally known, and although the Holocaust has beenon the curriculum in the UK since the late 1980s, knowledge of this basic, fundamental fact is not widespread. This lack of knowledge is more concerning in the context of increasing antisemitism: the Community Security Trust (CST) recorded 1,652 antisemitic incidents in the UK in 2018, the highest total CST has ever recorded in a single calendar year. Online, antisemitism proliferates, often including distortion or denial of the Holocaust. So, has Holocaust education failed? We – JW3 and the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust – are organising a panel discussion to consider this difficult question. This question is more complex than it

ALTHOUGH WE THINK THE SIX MILLION VICTIMS OF THE SHOAH IS UNIVERSALLY KNOWN, KNOWLEDGE OF THIS BASIC FACT IS NOT WIDESPREAD may appear. Educators with different audiences will have their own aims for Holocaust education, and therefore specific methods for achieving those aims. Holocaust education means something different for a museum working with adult visitors, for workshops in a young offenders’ institution, for lessons in a primary school, a lecture at a university and a local authority putting on an HMD event. We are fortunate in the UK to have a wonderfully rich and varied range of Holocaust educational opportunities, for adults and young people, Jewish and non-Jewish: museums, exhibitions, trips to Auschwitz, courses for teachers, materials for schoolchildren, lectures and more. The UK is also a world leader in marking HMD, setting an example for other countries in ensuring commemoration is linked

with education, has contemporary resonance and inspires action. Our event will focus on the different approaches and perspectives from some of the many organisations in this field, and explore the implications of this question. Opportunities to learn about the Holocaust must be encouraged – not once, in one lesson for children, but in formal and informal educational environments, for adults and young people, and reinforced again and again.  Book your tickets for this panel event at: www.jw3.org.uk/event/ has-holocaust-education-failed Olivia Marks-Woldman is chief executive of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. Trudy Gold is a former chief executive of the LJCC and an historian

1POLISH JOURNEY

The grandchildren of survivors, together with the Holocaust Educational Trust, organised a trip to Płaszów and Auschwitz-Birkenau for more than 60 young people to witness the sites of the greatest trauma of the 20th century. The group was joined by Auschwitz survivor Leslie Kleinman BEM (pictured, centre), who shared his testimony. Natalie Meltzer (pictured, third from left), granddaughter of survivor Harry Balsam, said: “It was incredibly moving to return to the site of Płaszów, where my grandfather, along with so many others, were so cruelly imprisoned. I am proud to work with the Holocaust Educational Trust to help educate about this horrific period of history, which is still in living memory for many.”

Louise Scodie experiences how WIZO, Israel’s largest social welfare organisation, is bringing hope to thousands of young people and victims of domestic abuse

Druze members of Daliat El Carmel’s WIZO group with delegates from the UK. Inset: Inside the sound studio at WIZO Vocational High School, Jerusalem

‘I didn’t care about anything, but here I’ve found my home’

I

’m standing in a busy professional kitchen with three tall and noisy teenagers in chef ’s outfits shouting to each other in Ivrit while they chop and mix mince and artichokes. This is a cooking class with a twist: the students here have come from challenging backgrounds, and they’re not just here to study. After years of trouble, they’re here to grab their last chance of success at WIZO’s Vocational School in the Rebecca Sieff Centre for the Family, Jerusalem. Our visit is one part of a WIZO UK ‘mission’ to Israel, a trip designed to demonstrate the impact of its work on Israeli society. WIZO is Israel’s largest social welfare organisation, funding more than 800 projects across the country. These funds are raised by volunteers across the world, who have their own local WIZO groups. WIZO’s work relies on these donations. WIZO UK sent £1.8million to support the organisation’s projects in 2018 thanks to its 12,000 members and supporters. Israel, 17, one of the trainee chefs at the vocational school, tells me more about why he’s here. “I was wild. I didn’t care about anything, I couldn’t stay in school. But I stay here because this place is built for kids like me. I’ve grown up here. After this, I’ll go into the army.” The point about the army is key. It’s difficult to get employed in Israel without having done national service, so WIZO schools encourage their students to get drafted. Kobi Hillel, director of the Rebecca Sieff

Centre, says the students are just as eager: “They love the army, because for the first time it makes them like everybody else. Ninety percent of our students go into the army – the national rate is 75 percent.” The sense of care at the school is palpable. Often, the students’ sole support is their teachers. Only 20 percent of parents turn up to parents’ evenings; some students have already left home to live in hostels. The teachers call their students when they don’t turn up to class; some even use their own money to buy their students clothes and books. The result? Graduates who get jobs, launch businesses and have families, despite their rocky beginnings. The next day, I find myself chatting with a smiling, colourfully-dressed woman tending to some equally colourful plants. Her sense of cheer is astounding given our location: the Gina Fromer shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children in Ashdod.

Galit, the smiling woman, is the shelter’s housekeeper. I ask how she copes in such a difficult atmosphere. Her answer is surprising: “It’s not an easy job, but I like the hugs in the morning, the warmth and love.” Sharon Shemesh manages the centre. She explains the residents referred here by the authorities are at the highest level of risk. They have to pick up and leave home immediately after suffering years of horrific abuse. Sharon explains: “They’re traumatised and often starving. We’ve had all types here – from bank managers to drug addicts.” The women tell Sharon they can finally sleep peacefully here, while their children also find much-needed relief. There’s an on-site nursery for the little ones, who play in the small garden as we talk. One toddler clings to her carer’s legs; two little girls pretend to cook together. It reminds me of my own daughter’s nursery. You’d never know how much trauma these children have been through. Later we head to Daliat El Carmel, a Druze city near Haifa, complete with its own surprising WIZO group. An assortment of Druze women, all wearing traditional white headscarves, welcome us with smiles and snacks. It’s not the image I had of a WIZO group, but these women share a goal with their Jewish counterparts: to improve the world around them.

Ghada Kamel, the branch chairperson, celebrates her group’s empowering nature. “Our activities support women in society, like our politics lectures. Our nursery enables women to work while we look after their children. When we started in 1975, women wouldn’t leave the kids or husbands to come here. But the world has changed. Our women know it’s important to come and meet their sisters.” The trip ends on an inspiring note. We’re at the leafy, colourful campus of the WIZO Hadassim School and Youth Village, north of Tel Aviv, listening to a panel of teachers and students. One girl, Segal, 17, speaks passionately as she explains her situation: “I was broken, my parents didn’t believe in me. I had to change my environment to achieve my potential. When I got to Hadassim and saw the grass and the view here, I said this is my place. I want to live here.” Also with us is Sara [not her real name], a domestic abuse survivor helped to escape by a WIZO shelter. Sara describes her harrowing experience and her powerful testimony elicits a surprise reaction. Segal says: “I realise listening to you that I was in an abusive relationship. Now I know this, I want to learn how to avoid that again.” It’s an amazing moment: a teenager who was broken, now empowered enough to talk about her abuse and strong enough to avoid it. She’s clearly on track to realise her dream – to return to Hadassim as its manager. If this trip was designed to show how WIZO changes lives, then Segal is a shining example of its success.  To find out more visit wizo.org

‘We’re one big family’ TAL, short for Torah Action Life, is an enigmatic Jewish organisation helping enhance the lives of Jewish youth and young professionals. It’s the proud sponsor of the Education Zone at The Big Family Show & Expo. Sunday also coincides with the launch of a campaign to raise £1million in 36 hours to build a community and learning centre in Temple Fortune. Open to anyone from a Jewish background, with a specific concentration on the Sephardic community, TAL was founded by Rabbi Jonathan Tawil in 2011. Born and bred in London, before studying in the UK and Israel, Rabbi Tawil and his wife, Raya felt there was a significant gap in synagogues for the provision of young people, or for those who remain single. “I saw the void. There were so many holes,” says Rabbi Tawil. “I wanted to plug them. At the time,

TAL – The Big Family Show & Expo education zone sponsor – enhances the lives of youth and young professionals through Jewish learning there wasn’t a place for the youth to gather, for them to hear Torah that was speaking to them.” Rabbi Tawil attempted to help bridge this gap, with his simple formula: Torah + Action = Life. From small beginnings of hosting regular shiurim at Rabbi Tawil’s house, TAL today produces an innovative parsha sheet distributed to more than 25 synagogues across the UK and read by thousands. TAL has also set up a regular chavruta night, where people from all backgrounds can come and learn, as well as themed shabbatons, which attract more than 200 people. Other activities hosted by TAL include everything from singles events, trips abroad and paintballing to go-carting, cooking classes, chanukah and Purim parties. “At TAL, it’s one big family, everyone is treated like family.

We nurture them and by Year 10 they are leading the services.” Reflecting on TAL’s success, he adds: “I didn’t have to do this. I could’ve been a banker. But I didn’t want to wake up in a decade or two and ask: where have all the youth gone?”  For more information about TAL, visit torahactionlife.com or call 07792 460 986

in a Torah way.” Of the effect TAL has had on tomorrow’s generation, Rabbi Tawil cites one example where he runs a Sephardi explanatory minyan at a school every Thursday. “These kids have a growing curi-

Making a difference 2019 is a very special year for Jewish Blind & Disabled as it marks 50 years since the charity was first established to enable people from the age of 18 upwards, who have physical disabilities or impaired vision, to live independently with dignity and choice. We are delighted to celebrate both the past and the future at The Big Family Show & Expo. Unfortunately, one in five people in the UK find themselves facing the impact of a diagnosis of a disability or vision impairment whether through illness, accident or age. Over the past 50 years our specialist state-of-the-art developments of one and two-bedroom mobility apartments have transformed the lives of thousands of people who found themselves in this position. Not only enabling people to maintain their much-prized independence through the many special features and thoughtful touches, but also providing vital reassurance with support on site and on call 24/7, as well as breaking down the barriers of loneliness and isolation that can accompany a diagnosis of disability. We are currently looking forward to welcoming yet more new tenants when our latest development of 19 apartments opens later this year. Living a boutique hotel life – 365 days a year Ofer Investments, sponsors of the Expo lifestyle zone, reveals its plans for land by Herzliya beach

I

t is the perfect spot. A piece of land opposite the beach in Herzliya Pituah, between the Dan Acadia Hotel and Herzliya Marina. A great many architects and designers fantasised about filling that spot – but needed the opportunity to design a project for this most desirable slice of virgin beach. The privilege fell to architect Rani Ziss and designer Dana Oberson, who were chosen to plan and erect a building for veteran construction company Ofer Investments, and it would be one of the most prestigious and intriguing projects built along our coastline. The company then chose designer Dana Oberson, owner of the successful studio Oberson Architects in Ramat Hasharon, to design a luxury residential project of the highest standard for a specific and particularly demanding niche audience. They are the kind of people who wish to leave the detached house in which they’ve lived for decades, where they raised their children; now, they are spreading their wings like a young couple and moving to a place

they have dreamed of for years. From here on, they would be living in superior accommodation, not only during vacations but throughout the year. We spoke with designer Dana about the creative process that involved combining the two worlds – boutique hotel and private luxury residence – to achieve the prestigious luxury project on the Herzliya beach. “It’s a design that will render you open-mouthed and make you feel like packing your bags as soon as possible,” is what she should say, but she gives credit to architect Rani for creating the structure. “It’s a unique shape – not as

Above and below: Several of the luxury apartments in the Herzliya Pituach on the Sea complex

a smooth curtain wall cube but as a complex and intriguing structure. As a result, each apartment is a separate and prominent unit floating in space, which gives the project residents a sense of intimacy, as if they were living in a villa on the beach.” Dana then goes on to talk about the zen atmosphere in the public spaces including the lobby, which has a rust-coloured Arabic Mashrabiya (enclosed balcony) as the centerpiece. The sense of calm and serenity exhuded by the soft, bright atmosphere is a result of moving away from the rigid urban style and dark colours seen in other buildings throughout the country. And much thought went into the complex’s swimming pool, where Dana has created a practical public space, with room for privacy. “The choice of colours – a combination of beige, green and the colour of shallow water creates a sense of freedom, luxury, the feeling of being aboard a yacht,” she says. As an architect with many years of experience, Dana primarily focused on the exterior of the spaces she designed, but then realised it was not enough and she wanted to be the one who was behind the smallest details, right up to the flower bowl on the table. This attention to detail is also evident in the project overall – including the choice of of quality materials that blend together to create the exact atmosphere she wanted for the residents: an apartment for permanent residence that feels like a holiday flat.

When asked who she imagined was the target audience for these apartments, she said: “Israeli customers who want to feel European, as well as overseas customers who want to be a step away from the beach and enjoy the Israeli weather in a location and residential environment that feels as if it belongs to another country.” All your dreams in one place Dana also imagined the reactions of residents’ family and friends, who would no doubt express their admiration that they have managed to gain a foothold and decided to live here. Take a few steps and plunge into the sea waves “It was important for me to create a unique project at the highest level, which has many advantages for its residents: a space characterised by calm and tranquility against the outside chaos and the daily routine, a meticulous design down to the smallest details, and the huge advan-

tage that many people dream of – to walk a few steps and be on the beach,” Dana says with a smile. Live just like you dreamed In all the conversations Ofer Investments had with the design and development people of the ‘Herzliya Pituach on the Sea’ project, one message prevailed; to create a dream project – and this was achieved. The location is unparalleled: only eight minutes’ drive from Tel Aviv’s City (even during rush hour) and within walking distance to the bustling gourmet scene of Herzliya, just along the street. Culture lovers will enjoy the proximity to the Performing Arts Centre of Herzliya, the Zappa concert complex and the galleries nearby. And, for shoppers, the mall and design and fashion shops around the compound offer huge choice. So, if you are looking for a home in which to spend the most beautiful time of your life, and you have five million shekels to invest in yourself, you should set a date to visit ‘Herzliya Pituach on the Sea’.

Torah For Today

SEDRA Vayikra (Zachor)

What does it say about: Israel’s moon mission

BY RABBI BORUCH M BOUDILOVSKY The book of Vayikra opens with a detailed description of the various tabernacle and temple offerings, which ranged from plain flour to expensive livestock, from voluntarily-presented offerings to mandatory ones, and from those offered on behalf of individuals to those on behalf of the nation and beyond. Several times, a more economical alternative is introduced by the phrase: “But if his [or her] means are insufficient…”. The Torah sensitively presents the poor with an affordable alternative so they do not feel excluded. There may, however, be an additional directive in these words. When in the company of others, people could find themselves pressured to present offerings beyond their affordability. In an ancient economy based on subsistence farming and livestock, these offerings could be quite expensive and people might become inclined to take loans. The Torah encourages people to worship and celebrate only within thei means. Celebrating life cycle events are often genuine sources of joy and pride, but, too often, encouraged by social, psychological and other pressures, people host celebrations they simply cannot afford. Sadly, the financial burden people irresponsibly place themselves under destroys lives and relationships. Modesty should therefore be maintained, even when people are fortunate enough to afford more and we should remember the words in Micha (6:8) “He has told you... what is good, and what Hashem seeks from you: Only the performance of justice, the love of kindness, and walking humbly with your God.”

 Rabbi Boruch M Boudilovsky serves Young Israel of North Netanya

RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS There’s a corny joke about extra-terrestrial life children tell in shul. When the chazan bows to the Ark, taking out the Torah scroll, he says Gad’lu l’adonai Iti, which sounds like “E.T.” Of course this is not proof of a belief in life on other worlds, but Judaism is very interested in the cosmos outside of the earth. The moon is important to us because we have an intercalated solar-lunar calendar, meaning that we fix our months by the moon and the sun, so festivals appear in their proper seasons, but months also appear according to the lunar phases. This necessitates a leap month, which is why we have two Adars this year, to catch us up to the solar year. Were we not to do this, Pesach would not fall

in the spring. The Midrash uses the sun and the moon to illustrate human nature and our desire to dominate. They were created the same size and brilliance, but the moon was jealous and asked God to make one smaller and dimmer.

God obliged by doing this to the moon, but in compensation made her Queen of the Night ruling over the rest of the cosmos. The moon is also described as emblematic of the Jewish people – it wanes and waxes, but it always comes back again, and like us, is resilient. With the exploration of the cosmos by the Israeli probe, we see a great leap in science. Jews have always been fascinated by physics and astronomy. The rabbinic calendar was calculated to such accuracy that it has only deviated by four days in 2,000 years. Let us hope the Israeli probe is able to bring back new discoveries and we should rightly feel very proud of the scientific achievement this project demonstrates.  Rabbi Zvi Solomons serves the Jewish community of Berkshire JCoB.org

The Bible Says What?

Progressively Speaking

‘Establish cities for those who’ve killed’

What does the Torah teach us about the spreading of rumour and hoaxes?

BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER To take a life is the ultimate wrongdoing, for which Judaism prescribes its harshest punishments. However, what if someone is killed accidentally? The Torah says revenge could be taken against such a person by killing them, but the children of Israel are also commanded that they must set up cities of refuge where someone who has committed manslaughter could flee. Inside such a city, they would be safe from retribution, from “honour killings”. What can we learn from this unusual system of justice? The urge to seek revenge may be an understandable natural human trait – but not a positive one. Although our tradition may have a grudging acceptance that people may attempt to seek revenge against someone who has caused them to suffer, it is clear the Torah condemns revenge. We are commanded to put in place measures that will try to pre-

vent revenge, knowing that while we may want to get our own back, this kind of retribution solves nothing. These cities were not for those who acted with malice, but for those who made a mistake. They were to be given a safe space, away from revenge, to try to rebuild. Why? Because when a person makes a terrible mistake there is always the possibility of learning, renewal and improvement, so long as they can escape the mob mentality that seeks to destroy them. Today, there are Twitter armies ready to tear down a person at the slightest hint of a mistake. For those who make honest mistakes without malice, perhaps we need to continue building cities of refuge today where they cannot be left in ruins, but where they can reflect and grow to become better people.  Laura Janner-Klausner is the Senior Rabbi of Reform Judaism

BY RABBI SANDRA KVIAT “You shall not go up and down as a slanderer [or talebearer] among your people” (Leviticus 19:16) In recent weeks, worried parents and teachers have gone into overdrive because of the so-called ‘Momo Challenge’ on social media, which reportedly was encouraging children to do harmful acts to themselves and others. We now know it was all a hoax, but it highlights how difficult it is to distinguish between real and fake news, between real concerns and scaremongering. A core Jewish ethic is the prohibition of lashon harah (malicious speech) and its practical application, rechilut (the practice of repeating those things to others). Spreading false rumours and causing fear and panic is part of this prohibition. However, the overwhelming majority of those who posted about the ‘Momo Challenge’ on their Facebook feeds, or shared warnings

Internet challenges cause concern

with friends via WhatsApp did so in good faith, believing it to be real and wanting to make sure others were aware as well. Were they guilty of lashon hara? The answer is, of course, no. However, what this has highlighted is the need not just to educate our children about online safety, but also to educate ourselves. As adults, we must do what is called ‘social milling’, not taking a single tweet or post as fact, but rather look

at trusted websites to check and recheck the information, and to not rush to panic. The Momo hoax has shown how powerful words can be, what impact they can have for evil, but also for good. For lashon hara, or gossip as it is normally called, may be harmful, but it can also be helpful. Depending on the context, tale-bearing can also be a way of questioning power and powerful individuals and of bringing important knowledge on, using our networks for communication. How to use the power of words, when to speak up and when not to, when to pass information on and when not to, is difficult. But instead of only looking at the verse from Leviticus, perhaps we should also consider the wisdom in the Book of Proverbs, which reminds us that ‘The Torah of kindness is on her tongue’ (Proverbs 31.26).  Rabbi Sandra Kviat serves Crouch End Chavurah

Dear Naomi We’ve decided to rent a second property in Netanya. Once we finalise details, we will be sending payments over every month for rent and utilities. How should I set it up so I know I’m getting exactly the right amount of shekels in Israel to cover all the bills? Also, can we send the payments directly to our rental agent or to the utility company? Richard Dear Richard Thank you for getting in touch. This is definitely something we can help you with. head onto surfaces like her cot or the highchair sides, or when her head is covered with a hat or a hood. At this early stage of your baby’s life, it will feel like you are constantly adjusting clothes or removing and replacing her hearing aids, but she will grow out of this. The whistling could also be down to the fact that your baby is growing so quickly that the moulds no longer fit snugly, and sound is slipping out from the sides of the moulds. At this age it is not uncommon to find yourself at the audiologist with your baby needing new impressions to be made every three or four weeks. If wax build up is pushing those moulds out, the

CAROLYN ADDLEMAN DIRECTOR OF LEGACIES

KKL Dear Carolyn I recently sold an investment property I owned in equal shares with my sister. In order to save inheritance tax, I would like to gift my share of the sale proceeds, which amounts to £150,000, to my grandchildren during my lifetime. Is this a good idea and would it work from an inheritance tax

www.bloomhearing.co.uk

Dear Sharon We all want to mitigate our inheritance tax liability, and making lifetime gifts to beneficiaries who aren’t a spouse or a charity is a good way of reducing the inheritance tax that becomes due on death. Giving money to your grandchildren would be classified as a potentially exempt transfer. This means that any gift of more than £3,000 would be bound by a seven-year clock, which starts ticking when the gift is made. If the donor survives for the full seven years, the value of the gift falls out of the estate for inheritance tax purposes. However, if the

donor of the gift dies within the seven-year window, inheritance tax will become payable, albeit at a reduced rate after the first three years from the date the gift was made. You might like to consider giving the annual exemption of £3,000 to your grandchildren and leaving a charitable legacy in your will, both of which would help to reduce the inheritance tax liability, particularly if you leave 10 percent of your estate to charity when the rate on the remainder of your taxable estate is reduced to 36 percent from 40 percent. KKL deals with all matters relating to will drafting. For further advice, call 0800 358 3587 or email wills@kkl. org.uk
