A child’s swing amid the devastation caused by the rocket attack on the Wolf family home near Tel Aviv

Three generations of Robert Wolf ’s family miraculously survived this week when a rocket from the Gaza Strip destroyed their home near Tel Aviv, writes Michele Chabin in Jerusalem. The British-born Israeli (pictured) remains deeply concerned about wife Susan, 59, daughter-in-law Yael and five-month-old granddaughter, Tamara, who are being treated in Kfar Saba’s Meir Medical Centre. His son Daniel and other grandchild Mia were also in the house when the rocket hit. He told Jewish News: “Tamara needs shrapnel removed from her head under general anaesthetic. My wife has shrapnel in her head, but that can’t be removed yet. Doctors are deciding how to deal with it.” Yael, who shielded Tamara with her body, also has shrapnel lodged in her back, as well as various cuts and bruises. The attack on a residential community in central Israel on Monday

stunned the Israeli public and sparked a short but intense military confrontation between the IDF and Hamas. Wolf, 60, originally from Portsmouth, and his wife, from Southgate, have lived in Israel since the 1980s. He runs a glass factory outside Tel Aviv. Growing up in the UK, he said he had never considered making aliyah. Then a trip to Israel sparked his interest. “I didn’t grow up in a Zionist environment. I took a cheap flight to Israel when I was 19 and thought I’d stay for six months. I worked on Kibbutz Geva [near Afula]. I decided to stay and serve in the army. After the army, I thought I might as well stick around.” Robert met Susan on a trip back to the UK when his father died. Their two sons were born in London, their two daughters in Israel. Despite the devastating loss of his home, Wolf said he feels “very lucky.” He adds: “My family being alive is all that counts.” He has no idea how and when he will be able to rebuild. “Ask me in a week, when things are clearer,” he said. Fragile calm after Israeli retaliation Britain this week welcomed the intervention of Egypt in negotiating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, after a round of violence triggered by a rocket attack that injured seven members of a British-Israeli family near Tel Aviv. Ambassador Karen Pierce, the UK’s Permanent Representative to the UN, told the Security Council the Government “condemned unreservedly” the act of terror that left three generations of the family injured after the attack on Monday. The rocket attack prompted

a fierce Israeli response, with attack helicopters and drones targeting highrise buildings in the Strip, including the office of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad denied responsibility for the attack. Netanyahu returned from the United States, where he had been expected to give a speech at the AIPAC conference. Egyptian negotiators stepped in after Hamas terrorists retaliated with rockets and incendiary balloons, and by Tuesday a shaky ceasefire held. The UN’s Middle East Coordi-

nator, Nickolay Mladenov urged all sides “to exercise maximum restraint as the situation remains tense” but said a “fragile calm seems to have taken hold”. However, on Tuesday night, there were reports of missiles fired into southern Israel. One rocket was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system over the city of Ashkelon. The Israeli Air Force hit back with strikes in Rafah and Khan Younis, but by yesterday morning there was a renewed calm.

Last week, IDF reservists were called to the Gaza border in preparation for the one-year anniversary of the March of Return protests. “We remain concerned about the volume of live fire that’s been used,”

said Pierce. “This is resulting in horrific injuries and iin fatalities.” The Gaza committee organising this weekend’s anniversary events has called for mass mobilisation near the border fence on Sunday.

Baby faces shrapnel surgery Continued from page 1 Wolf (pictured left with UK Ambassador David Quarrey) said he has been overwhelmed by the offers of help he has received from friends and strangers. “I’ve been offered tremendous help from my friends and from the

Israeli people. What’s important to know is that in times of trouble, Israelis – all types of Israelis – are behind us. My Druze, Arab and Jewish clients do not stop offering help. That’s been the most important part of this experience.” Asked how British Jews could

help his family, Wolf said: “I want them to support Israel, the one country they can come to in times of trouble. Just wish us luck and send us good vibes. “The only message I would send to the savages that did this is: the people of Israel are going nowhere

and the civilians of Gaza will rise up and squash you. No backwards savage regime survives forever. “When I moved to Israel we had a population of three million. Now we are eight million. Think about that.”  Editorial comment, p20

Trump recognises Israeli ‘sovereignty’ over Golan With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu looking on, US President Donald Trump signed a proclamation recognising Israel’s ‘sovereignty’ over the Golan Heights. “Our relationship is powerful,” President Trump said on Monday at the White House ceremony. “We will confront the poison of antisemitism through our words and, more importantly, our actions.” Trump’s formal recognition came four days after he said on Twitter that it was time to do so and two weeks before elections in Israel.

MIDDLE EAST MINISTER RESIGNS Alistair Burt MP resigned as Middle East Minister this week to vote against the government on Brexit. It marks the end of his second spell at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with a Middle East brief, the first being under David Cameron. The Conservative minister, who was also a minister for International Development, earned a reputation for being well-briefed while answering questions at the dispatch box and during Westminster Hall debates, and was wellrespected across the House of Commons. At an event for Jewish group Yachad last year,

he told the audience that the British Government viewed as “unacceptable” Israel’s demolition of homes in Palestinian villages in the West Bank, but was equally unequivocal in condemning terror attacks by Palestinians against Israelis. “The UK has lost a thoughtful and highly respected minister,” said Yachad director Hannah Weisfeld. “Minister Burt was a brilliant champion of peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians and will be missed by all those who work to promote a political resolution to the conflict.”

Charity pulls Canary ad over ‘fake news’ Macmillan Cancer Support has removed its advert on The Canary website in response to a campaign from anti-fake news activists. The charity pulled an appeal for donations placed under an article on the leftwing news website. The article, which was headlined “While all eyes were on Chequers, a TIG MP travelled 3,000 miles to smear Jeremy Corbyn”, rebuked former Labour MP Joan Ryan for speaking out against antisemitism in Labour at this week’s AIPAC conference. In a tweet, Macmillan Cancer Support wrote: “We hear your concerns about where our ads appear and will remove this placement while we review the platforms used for our online ads.” A tweet sent on Monday from an account called ‘Dave Gordstein’ appealed to the cancer charity to remove the advert due to concerns about the w e b s i t e ’s

The appeal was shared the next day by TV presenter Rachel Riley and a group of activists called Stop Funding Fake News, which targets websites accused of publishing fake news by calling on brands to boycott them. To stop an advert from appearing on a website, advertisers need only add the web address of the website to a dedi-

cated page in their AdWords account. Stop Funding Fake News, launched last month, has also convinced Ted Baker, the World Wildlife Fund and Moonpig to pull ads. Riley encouraged her followers to support Stop Funding Fake News, adding: “A small way we can all make a difference against hate and stop people profiting from dividing us.” The Canary has been approached for comment.

News / Labour antisemitism

Labour expels Jackie Walker

NEWS IN BRIEF

TORIES MAKING THE ‘SAME MISTAKES’ A British antisemitism expert has warned the Conservative Party is making “exactly the same mistakes” with Islamophobia as the Labour Party made when it came to hatred of Jews. Dave Rich, an associate at the Pears Institute for the Study of Antisemitism and a deputy communications director at the Community Security Trust who has authored books on antisemitism and the left, made the comments writing in a personal capacity this week.

The Labour Party has expelled former Momentum vice-chair Jackie Walker, three years after her suspension. The left-wing activist was kicked out yesterday over charges of making comments that were “grossly detrimental” to the party. She was initially disciplined after saying “many Jews were chief financiers of the slave trade”, before being readmitted after an investigation. She was again suspended in October 2016. On the opening day of her hearing on Tuesday, Walker reportedly walked out, claiming she had been “forced to withdraw” because “the panel due to pronounce on her case refused to allow her to make a short opening statement in her defence”. She claimed she was refused “a few short moments to personally address the disciplinary panel to speak in my

NO-SHOW ACTIVISTS FACING ARREST Two prominent pro-Israel activists face an arrest warrant after failing to appear at a court hearing this week, according to a media report. Damon Lenszner and Jonathan Hoffman did not appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where they were due to answer charges on Monday. Lenszner was charged with assault by beating, while Hoffman was charged with common assault and using threatening words and behaviour. Hoffman claimed in a blog that he did not receive a summons letter.

own defence”, adding: “All I have ever asked for is for equal treatment, due process and natural justice; it seems this is too much to ask of the Labour Party”. However, a Labour spokesperson said: “This account is incorrect and misleading. Individuals in these disciplinary hearings can fully state their case once the charges against them are presented. “The process for hearings is the same for everyone and the order of the events is clearly explained to those involved in

advance.” The Board of Deputies, Jewish Leadership Council and Community Security Trust said: “The hearing took far too long to happen. It made the right decision, but nobody wins in this latest ugly case of disreputable behaviour.” A three-person disputes panel chaired the meeting, which concluded on Wednesday. Before the meeting, ‘Labour Against the Witchhunt’ hosted a rally in support of Walker and suspended MP Chris Williamson.

CORBYN ATTENDED HAMAS-LINKED EVENT Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn attended a Hamaslinked Geneva conference calling for convicted Palestinian terrorists to be freed, it was revealed this week. The 2011 event was organised by the European Network to support the Rights of Palestinian Prisoners (UFree), which is chaired by Mohammed

Hamdan, brother of senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan, a UK-designated terrorist. “The Golem” social media account said another participant was ‘blood-libel’ cleric Raed Salah, whom Corbyn infamously treated to tea at the House of Commons, and former IRA member Gerry MacLochlainn.

EHRC EXTENSION The Labour Party has been granted a week-long extension to respond to allegations of antisemitism raised by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). The EHRC contacted Labour earlier this month to set out its concerns about antisemitism in the party and requested a response. Labour was given two weeks to provide a satisfactory response before the equalities watchdog would consider whether to launch

a formal human rights investigation. But it has been revealed Labour has been given more time to respond to the concerns set out by the EHRC. “They came back and had some questions and needed a little bit of time,” an EHRC spokesperson told Jewish News. The party has until 1 April to respond to concerns set out by the equalities watchdog before it considers whether to launch a formal probe.

Newmark anger at ‘witch-hunt’ probe The former chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) has denounced as “a politically motivated witch-hunt” the allegations of financial wrongdoing against him, which led to a year-long inquiry and a file being sent to the police. Jeremy Newmark (pictured) was told last week the police had decided to take no action against him. Police made the decision after an external inquiry into a series of historic financial irregularities, established at the behest of the Charity Commission. It pointed the finger at some of the trustees for their response to the allegations, saying a “professionally qualified trustee has a higher duty of skill and care

t. Es

in matters relevant to that qualification than other trustees” and insisting an internal inquiry should have been opened at the time. The report added that there was “potentially questionable expenditure of £111,734”, which would have warranted further investigation. In findings published in February, however, it said the trustees’ actions were taken in good faith. A parallel report by independent forensic accountants Crowe UK LLP was submitted to the police but never made public. Newmark was chief executive of the JLC for seven years until 2013, when he stood down citing ill-health as the reason. A whistleblower alerted JLC leaders to a series of allegations regarding thousands of pounds’ worth of improper spending, allegations Newmark has consistently denied. Speaking exclusively to Jewish News, News after the police decision, he said: “Since the original anonymous ‘leaks’ of unsubstantiated complaints by a so-called

whistleblower, I have always been adamant that these allegations were malicious and false. “After a year-long investigation by Judge Dawn Freedman’s panel (with whom I fully co-operated) and subsequent referral of their deliberations to the police, not a single one of the allegations against me has been proven”. He said he and his family had had to suffer “the consequences of a politically motivated witch-hunt, set against a backdrop of hysteria, fake news and nastiness”. Newmark said he was taking legal advice on how to proceed after the police decision. He said there were “clearly lessons to be learned” by many of the parties involved. But he was not ready to comment further as he was focusing on his bid to be re-elected as a Labour borough councillor in Borehamwood, as well as co-ordinating the campaign for 38 other Labour candidates in the area. He said: “I owe it to local people to give that my full attention and not to allow the fallout from these historic matters to distract me from that.”

ANTSEMITIC GRAFFITI A spate of antisemitic daubings around Edgware calling Jews “aliens” and “malevolent” have been reported to the police. Bus shelters and the wall of a bank were vandalised this week, after similar graffiti urging people to watch conspiratorial antisemitic videos was reported last week. A bus stop in Burnt Oak had the phrase “Jews and gays are cray aliens” daubed onto it, while a wall next to NatWest Bank on Hale Lane was defaced with the phrase “Jews and gays are malevolant [sic]’. Purim safety fears Police overseeing this year’s Purim celebrations in London removed Jewish children from trucks because they were “dangerously overloaded”. Orthodox community leaders in Stamford Hill complained that police “ruined Purim” after officers stepped in, but on Monday the Metropolitan Police’s Safer Neighbourhoods Team said verbal cautions could just as easily have been arrests. In a statement, Sergeant James Melton said: “A decision was made to

remove some children from a truck purely for safety reasons. It was deemed by the officers present that the truck was dangerously overloaded and unsafely carrying its load.” He added: “This is a criminal offence and the driver could have been arrested or processed for the offence. “On this occasion, no further action was taken and the incident was dealt with by words of advice and the unsafe load was managed appropriately.”

HJPS downgraded amid ‘safeguarding’ concerns Governors of a Jewish primary school in Hertsmere have written to parents after an Ofsted inspection criticised it for safeguarding concerns owing to “blurred boundaries” between personal and professional lives. Iain Blakeley, chair of governors at Hertsmere Jewish Primary School (HJPS), wrote to parents last Friday about the school’s downgrade to ‘Inadequate’ after inspectors hammered its leadership and management. In the letter, he said “we readily acknowledge the weakness raised by inspectors”, adding that the governing body has “been taking steps to address this”, including the appointment of “a new, independent headteacher from outside the

immediate community” and “several new governors, including independent governors with no connection to the school, staff or parent body”. The school was downgraded overall despite being deemed ‘good’ in all other categories. Among their findings, inspectors said pupils

achieve well at all key stages, teaching is typically good and pupils’ behaviour of pupils is also good. Ofsted previously rated the school as ‘Outstanding’ in 2009, so the downgrade represents a significant fall from grace for one of the Jewish community’s most respected primaries. Blakeley said he had “always been proud” HJPS was part of “a close-knit community”, but inspectors said “boundaries have not been maintained” and that “for too long, professional and personal boundaries have been allowed to blur”. Inspectors concluded “the school has failed to maintain a positive culture of safeguarding” but Blakeley said: “There is no question that children are safe at school.”

Fundraiser for Pinner shopkeeper Pinner’s Jewish community has helped raise £31,000 in 48 hours for the family of a shopkeeper knifed to death during a robbery on Sunday. An online fundraising bid launched on Monday for the family of Sri Lanka-born Ravi Katharkamar, 54, (pictured) fired support and sympathy

across north-west London, with the Jewish community supporting an appeal begun by Caron Dias, a Jewish resident. She said: “The murder on our doorsteps was utterly senseless and tragic. While we are seeing an epidemic of violent crime in this country, for it to happen so close to home

is hard to ignore. Behind the headlines is a family whose lives have been torn apart.” The fundraising will help the family of the popular shopkeeper pay for “funeral costs, ongoing financial support – or just to show we care,” said Dias, adding it was “one way we can pour our sadness into some-

thing useful”. Police were called to the newsagents at 6am on Sunday and found Katharkamur stabbed. He died 45 minutes later.  Donate at gofundme. com – Search ‘Supporting The Family From Marsh Food and Wine’

POLAND URGED TO BAN IRVING Poland is likely to ban David Irving from entering the country, ahead of the British Holocaust denier’s planned tour of Nazi camps. Last week, Israeli Minister Naftali Bennett wrote to the Polish Ambassador to ask the country to deny him entry. The disgraced historian wants to run a ‘Nazihistory tour’ to take in infamous camps such as Treblinka, Sobibór, Belzec and Majdanek. Reuters reported on Sunday that Warsaw is likely to refuse him entry, with the foreign ministry citing Holocaust denial laws. Minister of Foreign Affairs Jacek Czaputowicz said in a press conference: “Negation of the Holocaust is not allowed by Polish law, therefore he will not be welcome here.”

‘Neo-Nazi spoke of using head as ball’ A neo-Nazi terror suspect who entered a Miss Hitler contest was obsessed with “ethnic cleansing” and talked about using a Jew’s severed head as a football, a court has heard. Alice Cutter, 22, is standing trial alongside her partner, Mark Jones, who is accused of being a “leader and strategist” for the proscribed group. Jones, 24, and Cutter, both of Mulhalls Mill, Sowerby Bridge, near Halifax, deny being members of National Action between December 2016 and September 2017.

MP IN ‘CULTURAL MARXISM’ FURORE Tory MP Suella Braverman has been criticised for using the phrase “cultural marxism” at an event in Westminster hosted by the Bruges Group today. “We are engaged in a war against cultural marxism. We’re engaged in a battle against socialism,” she told the audience, as revealed by Guardian journalist Dawn Foster. Braverman’s use of the phrase “cultural marxism” drew criticism online, with social media users pointing out its far-right connotations. The phrase was invoked by Norwegian mass shooter Anders Breivik, who killed 77 people in 2011.

Eddie Dempsey, from the RMT union, accused Michael Chessum, a member of the leftwing pro-EU group Another Europe is Possible, of having his pockets “full of Soros money”. Dempsey later apologised on Twitter “if anyone got the wrong end of the stick.”

United after mosque attacks Jewish leaders across the UK reiterated their support for the Muslim community this week after five mosques were attacked with sledgehammers. Two men were arrested after the buildings in Birmingham had their windows smashed. One man was later released without charge. Former Birmingham lord mayor Sir Bernard Zissman, a former president of the Birmingham Hebrew Congregation and the Representative Council of Birmingham and Midlands Jewry, called the attacks “tragic ”. He said: “The Jewish com-

munity in Birmingham will share the grief and horror at these attacks with the Muslim community, with whom we have very good relations. “The Jewish community has always been aware of the difficulty of dealing with extremists and we can only offer our care and support to the Muslim community at this very difficult time.” Days before the attack, Birmingham rabbis and bishops had joined imams to stand in solidarity with the Muslim community after the New Zealand massacre. Interfaith activities in

catalyst for the good relations came after the 9/11 in the US. At that time, Rabbi Leonard Tann led a Jewish

delegation to the local mosque to show solidarity during a wave of anti-Muslim feeling. Jacobs said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with our Muslim brothers and sisters. The Jewish community knows from our memory, not so long ago, what the smashing of windows of synagogues and buildings means.” The Board of Deputies said the attacks were “disturbing”, adding: “We stand in solidarity with the Muslim community, who should know they are not alone in standing up to the evil of anti-Muslim prejudice.”

MUSLIM LEADER BLAMES MURDERS ON MOSSAD New Zealand’s Human Rights Commission has strongly criticised a Muslim leader for telling an antiracism rally Israeli spy agency Mossad was behind the Christchurch mosque attacks earlier this month. Ahmed Bhamji, chairman of the Mt Roskill Masjid E Umar, was criticised after telling a rally on Saturday

that the gunman got support from Israel’s external intelligence agency. “Do you think this guy was alone?” Bhamji asked the crowd. “Where did he get the funding from? I have a very strong suspicion there’s some group behind him and I am not afraid to say Mossad is behind this.” Jewish-Muslim relations in New

Zealand are strong and have been made more so by the tragedy, allegedly perpetrated by an Australian who left a white nationalist manifesto before filming himself killing worshippers. Bhamji was rubbished by the country’s Human Rights Commission, which said: “Prejudice against Jewish people has no place in New Zealand.

We must condemn racism, hate and antisemitism whenever we see it.” Muslims in New Zealand have taken to social media to say Bhamji does not represent them or their views. One said: “The Jewish community has been so forthcoming with its support. Hate like that has no place here regardless of one’s position.”

Holocaust centre gets £97,000 grant The National Holocaust Centre and Museum has received a £97,100 grant to update existing exhibitions and create new gallery spaces, writes Adam Decker. Based near Newark in Nottinghamshire, it is the only centre dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and education in the UK. One of the exhibitions at the centre, called The Journey, involves seven rooms, each one telling a different aspect of the life of 10-year-old Leo, a fictional Kindertransport refugee who fled Berlin in the 1930s. The grant, which comes from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, could help bring it to life in a larger space, with learning programmes for diverse audiences. The grant would also pay for a production suite to collect and digitise additional survivor testimony.

The Nottingham centre plans to open a new gallery

“This is a big statement from the Heritage Fund and strengthens the intention of helping millions of young people to learn from our recent history,” said Phil Lyons, chief executive of the centre. He added: “Through innovative thinking and new facilities, the centre will challenge today’s communities to reject hatred,

embrace compassion and live in a safer and fairer world.” This first round of funding will pay for the detailed development of the centre’s plans. The centre will have an opportunity to secure the full £800,000 grant in the next round of funding. If successful, this would finance the project.

Jewish docs nominated Two very different documentaries about British Jews have been shortlisted for an award by a charity that promotes excellence in religious programming. Two-part BBC Two TV series We Are British Jews, which follows a group that travels to Israel, was named on the Sandford St Martin Awards shortlist alongside Radio 4 documentary The Unorthodox Life of Miriam, which hears from a Jewish woman who felt compelled to leave the Charedi community. Upon hearing of the shortlist, Lucie Kon, the British-Jewish producer of We Are British Jews, said she was “chuffed” her documentary exploring the attitudes of British Jews to antisemitism and Israel had made the judges’ cut.

LICORICIA TO BE UNVEILED The statue of a prominent 13th century Jewish businesswoman is to be erected in Winchester to commemorate a “woman of national significance” and celebrate the city’s Jewish roots. The statue of Licoricia of Winchester by classically trained sculptor Ian RankBroadley, will be erected on Jewry Street near where she lived.

Joseph Cohen in We Are British Jews

She added: “I am proud to be a British Jew and this series was an incredibly important project for me, demonstrating the diversity and division facing the Britain’s Jewish community.”

The father-of-two, who is married to Karine and lives in London, came up with the idea for his podcast in December, after suggesting a similar programme to BBC London radio. However, BBC bosses turned him down after explaining it wasn’t “multicultural or diverse enough”, spurring Gould to launch his own programme. He secured his first interview with Sgt Benjamin Anthony and Brig Gen Amir Avivi, who together are meeting global leaders in a mission to bring peace to the Middle East through their New State Solution. News / Sadaqa Day / Jewdas outrage / Galloway breach

A day of friendship at the new Golders Green Islamic Centre was among 15 Jewish-Muslim events held for the Muslim community’s equivalent of Mitzvah Day. Sadaqa Day, initiated in 2015 as the Muslim community’s day of social action, saw more than 1,000 people cook for the homeless and collect for the needy. Joint Jewish-Muslim events took place in London, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Bournemouth, Cardiff and Peterborough, including putting on musical shows, arts and crafts and a ‘bring and buy’ sale. Mitzvah Day chief executive Georgina Bye, who participated in events at West London Synagogue and collections outside supermarkets, said: “It was a pleasure to take part in my first Sadaqa Day, supporting our local

communities, and to see how many groups did so around the country. “It is extremely powerful to come together through volunteering and I am excited to see how these groups and many more will come together for Mitzvah Day in November”. A day of friendship was held at the Golders Green centre with various initiatives including handing out red roses to local residents. Members built bridges with the Jewish community for Mitzvah Day 2017 by donating blood at the local synagogue. Initiatives supported the homeless across the UK, with a collection taking place at Tesco in Hendon with community charity GIFT, joined by members of the Board of Deputies. Members of West London Synagogue joined their Muslim neighbours to spend the day cooking for local homeless before handing out food that evening to the needy.

At the Jewish Museum in Camden, both Sadaqa Day and Purim were marked by a party with a musical show, arts and crafts and a chance for members of both communities to make charity boxes to collect for chosen causes. In Manchester, the JewishMuslim Women’s group, Nisa-

Nashim, took chocolates to women inmates at Styal Prison, where they also gave therapy sessions. Mitzvah Day’s founder Laura Marks and interfaith chair Lady Daniela Pears were pictured outside Golders Green Islamic Centre handing out roses. Julie Siddiqi, who founded Sadaqa Day in 2015, praised the support of the Jewish community, saying: “After the horrors of Christchurch, it has meant so much to British Muslims that our Jewish and other friends have reached out and shown so much love and support. “Sadaqa Day is a time to come together and really get active in helping and serving others.”

George Galloway’s coverage of antisemitism in Labour on talkRadio breached impartiality rules, Ofcom has found. The watchdog launched an investigation into due impartiality during shows presented by the former politician on 27 July and 6 August last year after complaints from listeners. The one-time Labour and Respect Party MP’s talkRadio platform could now face sanctions inclding having its licence shortened or revoked and a fine of up to £250,000. Hosting phone-ins on the Labour antisemitism allegations,

Galloway was found to have framed the controversy as a vehicle to attack the Labour leader. When he received a dissenting opinion in a text, Galloway called the sender an “ignorant woman”, and branded another listener who disagreed with him a “rag picker”. The watchdog found that while it was legitimate to broadcast programmes in support of Corbyn, principles of balance had to be maintained. talkRadio said: “You expect robust opinions from George Galloway, but we accept on this occasion he crossed the line.”

The family of London impresario Victor Hochhauser this week paid tribute to “the only Jew who could make the Red Army dance”, after he died aged 95, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. His son Simon – a former United Synagogue president – told Jewish News the family was “feeling his loss greatly”. Born in Slovakia, Victor’s parents were devout Jews from a famous lineage – his grandfather was the chief rabbi of Hungary – but he grew up in England after his industrialist father brought over the family in 1938. In London, he held a musical fundraiser for a synagogue and found he could secure unexpectedly well-known names. A £200 loan and a good deal of chutzpah later, he hired the Albert Hall and booked the London Symphony Orchestra. There was scarcely a talent in music or dance for which he did not help find an audience, as he reached out into the Soviet

Union for the biggest stars of all, including Rudolf Nureyev. “It was a full and long career. He brought all of the great names to the UK. Not only that, they became family friends, in part because they were cut off from the West.” Among the great musicians Victor became close to was violinist Yehudi Menuhin, after he organised his cut-price performance in 1947. Victor married Lilian in

1949 and the pair worked together for 70 years. “It was a tremendous association both of business and of marriage and love,” said Simon. He said his father passed on “Jewish values, family values, and a love of learning”, but it was his humour he remembered most. “He used to bring the Red Army here, and boasted that he was the only Jew who could make the Red Army dance.”

Merger sees ‘largest’ club Two of the community’s biggest sports organisations this week announced a merger to make “possibly the largest Jewish football club in the world”. Brady Maccabi and Maccabi London Lions have combined forces and will be known as Maccabi London FC (MLFC). MLFC will consist of 65 teams aged six to 60, with an estimated 1,000 registered players. Michel Bacos was awarded the Legion of Honour, France’s highest decoration, for refusing to leave the passengers after the plane was hijacked and grounded. Some 110 hostages were held in the airport terminal for nearly a week by seven pro-Palestinian hijackers before Israeli commandos freed them. The Tel Aviv-Paris flight was hijacked on June 27 1976 by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and a German terror group. The hijackers released 148 non-Israeli passengers after the plane landed in Uganda. Bacos remained with the hostages despite offers of release. Special report

Israel in focus as Democrat hopefuls target White House Stephen Oryszczuk on candidates lining up to topple Trump in 2020

T

he countdown to the 2020 US presidential election has already begun. A host of Democrats have thrown their hats in the ring to run against a newly-exonerated Donald Trump, most recently the enigmatic Texan Beto O’Rourke. So, where do they stand on Israel? Are they more in line with AIPAC, whose conference this week some boycotted? Or are they more dovish, like lobby group J-Street, which has just said it will run an “alternative Birthright” trip to give a Palestinian perspective? Jewish News takes a look at some of those to step forward.

Beto O’Rourke (Texas senator): This one-time punk guitarist almost pulled off an almighty upset in 2016, losing narrowly to senior Republican Ted Cruz, whose win in such a right-wing state had simply been assumed. Now considered a strong contender for president, where is he on Israel? In 2014, during the last Gaza war, O’Rourke, now 46, was one of only eight Congress members to oppose extra missile-defence funding for Israel. This led AIPAC to say he was siding with “the rocket launchers and the terror-tunnel builders”. In 2016, however, O’Rourke seemed to make amends by voting for the Taylor Force Act, which conditioned aid to the West Bank and Gaza. Last year, he criticised Donald Trump’s Jerusalem embassy move, calling it “unnecessarily provocative” and saying it would “provide incentives and incitement to violence”. Referencing US military aid to Israel and settlement-building, he said: “Sometimes being a friend means helping your friend to make tough, politically inconvenient decisions.” He added that without a two-state solution, Israel “cannot be both Jewish and democratic”. Verdict: J-Street Cory Booker (New Jersey senator): An African-American former mayor of Newark who counts Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg as a supporter, Booker is a Christian who studied as a Rhodes Scholar in 1992 at Oxford. There, he developed an interest in Judaism after meeting outspoken Rabbi Shmuley Boteach (who later tried and failed to run for Congress as a Republican). Also there, Booker – now 49 – became the first non-Jew to head the L’Chaim Society, and still keeps a Jewish Bible on his desk. The experienced Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg says Booker “knows more Torah” than most of his Jewish political peers. On Israel, Booker backed Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, but unlike most of his fellow 2020 Democratic competitors voted in favour of controversial Republican-inspired anti-BDS legislation which criminalises support for boycotts of Israel or settlements. Most of his rivals refused to back it on free speech grounds, but Booker’s support won him friends at NORPAC, the second largest pro-Israel political fund in the US, and at AIPAC, which is set to give him a platform at its coveted annual shindig. Booker is still not pro-Israel enough for former mentor

Elizabeth Warren Bernie Sanders

Beto O’Rourke Cory Booker Kamala Harris

Kirsten Gillibrand

Boteach, who accuses the Torah-spouting scholar he once helped of “abandoning Israel’s vital security interests” by voting against the Taylor Force Act and the anti-BDS bill. Verdict: AIPAC Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts senator): Another big hitter, Warren’s focus is on Wall Street and income inequality but she takes a view on most global issues and has long maintained it is “a moral imperative to support and defend Israel”. In 2014, she supported Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, voted to give Israel an additional $225 million for missile defence and sharply criticised a Palestinian application for membership at the UN. However, she has also been critical of Israeli actions. In 2017, she wrote to Benjamin Netanyahu to protest the demolition of Palestinian villages and last year she urged Israeli “restraint” during the Gaza border protests. She was against Trump’s embassy move, saying the status of Jerusalem should be subject to negotiation between the parties, and refused to back the anti-BDS law. Verdict: J-Street Kamala Harris (California senator): The daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, this former attorney-general is a nononsense progressive whose Jewish husband is also a lawyer. While she voted against the anti-BDS legislation, her statement doing so made clear she “supports security assistance to strengthen Israel’s ability to defend itself” and “has travelled to Israel where she saw the importance of US-Israeli security coopera-

tion first-hand”. On the question of whether she is ‘more AIPAC than J-Street,’ her multiple appearances at the AIPAC annual policy conference in recent years appear to provide the answer. While last year’s speech was given behind closed doors, in 2017 she said the US shouldn’t push Israelis and Palestinians towards negotiations. This was a big no-no for liberal Jews, who think the US needs to exert its influence to bring both sides to the table. Add to that her co-sponsorship of a 2017 Senate resolution blasting Obama for failing to veto a UN resolution condemning Israel’s settlement-building, and she is solidly to the right on the left. Verdict: AIPAC Kirsten Gillibrand (New York senator): A former lawyer who met her British husband Jonathan on a blind date, Gillibrand has built a support base in part by leading efforts to tackle sexual assault in the military and politics. Now one of the strongest female voices on the left, her position is closely analysed and often changes. For instance, she was all set to vote for the anti-BDS legislation, just like Booker, but changed her mind at the last minute after American civil liberties groups said it was a threat to the First Amendment. That, together with her backing for Obama’s nuclear deal and her criticism of Netanyahu for having “no plan for peace” has pitted her against some of the most senior Jewish Democrats, such as fellow New Yorker Chuck Schumer, who hated the Iran deal and backed the anti-BDS law. She spouts her pro-Israel credentials – leading the

fight for military funding, speaking out against anti-Israel bias at the UN and “voting for round after round of sanctions against Iran” – but appears somehow to be not hawkish enough for the hawks while also being not doveish enough for the doves. Verdict: AIPAC ( just) Bernie Sanders (Vermont senator): This 77-year-old Brooklyn-born Jewish senator who once volunteered on an Israeli kibbutz galvanised the Democratic base in 2016, but the party hierarchy picked Hillary Clinton to be its nominee and the rest, as they say, is history. ‘The Bern’ is back, and while he supports Israel he also criticises some Israeli policies and actions. During the 2014 Gaza war, he hit out at Hamas for hiding weapons among civilians but slammed Israel for bombing UN hospitals, calling it “terribly, terribly wrong”. He later abstained from a Senate vote condemning “unprovoked” rocket attacks from Gaza. Last year, he urged Trump to restore US funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (without success) and warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. He backed Obama’s nuclear deal and is “no great fan” of Netanyahu, boycotting the Israeli PM’s 2015 speech to Congress. He was openly against the anti-BDS law, and in a joint statement with fellow Jewish Democrat Dianne Feinstein, he said: “At a time when Netanyahu is pursuing policies clearly aimed at foreclosing the two-state solution, it is disappointing that Congress would consider penalising criticism of those policies.” Verdict: J-Street

Hero who helped capture Eichmann dies, aged 92 The legendary Mossad spy who led the team that captured Holocaust mastermind Adolf Eichmann in Argentina has died at the age of 92. Rafi Eitan was one of the founders of Israel’s intelligence community and among its most prominent figures in Israel and abroad. The 1960 operation to capture Eichmann in Argentina and bring him to trial in Jerusalem was perhaps Mossad’s most memorable mission. It brought to life the horrors of the Nazi “Final Solution”, of which Eichmann was the architect, creating a blueprint to wipe out the entire Jewish population of Europe. Eichmann was convicted

NEWS IN BRIEF

RABBI IS ‘CLIMATE CHANGE LEADER’

Sergio Bergman, the rabbi of Argentina’s oldest synagogue, Templo Libertad in Buenos Aires, has been named one of the 100 most influential voices on climate change. Bergman, a long-time friend of Pope Francis, is also Argentina’s minister of environment and sustainable development, serving in the administration of President Mauricio Macri. He has now been recognised as a global leader on climate change, on a par with people such as Sir David Attenborough and Michael Bloomberg. The Apolitical Group, which works with the World Economic Forum, named him in their Climate 100 list of “The World’s Most Influential People in Climate Policy”.

BLAIR BRAVE BY NAME AND NATURE A 30-year-old Californian, who says all her 14 dogs except one are Jewish, has become the second Jewish woman to complete a historic dog race in Alaska. Blair Braverman, who now lives in northern Wisconsin and runs a dog mushing company with her husband, finished a gruelling 1,000 mile sled race in 13 days, 19 hours, 17 minutes and two seconds.

Rafi Eitan was one of the founders of Israel’s intelligence

in 1961 of war crimes and crimes against humanity. He was hanged the following year – the only time Israel has carried out a death sentence. He had fled Germany after the Second World War and

assumed the name Ricardo Klement in Argentina. Mossad director Yossi Cohen said the majority of Eitan’s exploits still remained unknown to the general public.

DIPLOMAT INITIATES LIFE-SAVING PROJECT An Israeli diplomat who became the first Bedouin to serve in the country’s Foreign Ministry has helped to launch a life-saving project at his latest posting, Kathmandu. Ismail Khalidi has teamed up with local Chabad Rabbi Hezkl Lifshitz, to provide trekkers – many of whom are Israeli – with mini oxygen tanks to rent to protect them from altitude sickness. Eighteen months ago, a 26-year-old Israeli woman, Vered Aviyashar, from Kibbutz Ein Hanatziv, was killed when her Jeep overturned on the Annapurna ridge of the Himalayas. After the accident, a medical project was launched in her memory.

Khalidi said the project was “where Bedouin and Jewish values meet”. He was inspired to help when he heard about Vered’s death, and donated three months’ salary towards the project. Lifshitz explained: “At altitudes over 3,500 metres one is at risk of altitude sickness due to the oxygen-thin air. Altitude sickness can be life-threatening; accessible oxygen is the most effective method to treat it. “But travellers generally avoid carrying oxygen tanks because of their considerable weight and price. The solution therefore is to adapt the tank’s weight to the climber’s ability to carry them.”

“His work and his actions will be etched in gold letters in the annals of the state,” Cohen said. “The foundations that Rafi laid in the first years of the state are a significant layer in the activities of the Mossad even today.” Eitan was also known for being the handler of Pentagon spy Jonathan Pollard, the US intelligence analyst who passed information to Israel in the 1980s. In later life, Eitan entered politics and scored an election sensation in 2006 as head of the Pensioners Party, garnering seven seats in the 120seat parliament and becoming a cabinet minister in Ehud Olmert’s government.

NEW SITE LAUNCHED FOR RUSSIAN SPEAKING JEWS A new website, Seventy Russian-Speaking Jews Who Shaped Israel, has been launched by The Jerusalem Post with the support of the Genesis Philanthropy Group.. Men such as Josef Trumpeldor, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, Natan Sharansky, Hayim Nahman Bialik, Chaim Weizmann, Moshe Sharett and Levi Eshkol were some of the best-known pioneers who shaped modern Zionism and the state of Israel. All these soldiers, linguists, poets, scientists and politicians were Russian-speaking Jews. The aim of the new website is to highlight the contribution that Russian speakers have made throughout history, and in particular to the creation of modern Israel. Seventy of the best-known

life stories are featured on the site. Ilia Salita, president and CEO of Genesis Philanthropy Group, said: “Russian-speaking Jews have contributed a great deal to the world and helped shape the course of world history for the better. But, without a shared sense of pride, it is hard for future generations to connect to their heritage. “We strive to foste an emotional connection to what has been accomplished by those who came before us.”

Palestinian convict barred from Berlin anti-Israel talk Rasma Odeh, a 73-year-old Palestinian woman who was involved in the murder of two Israeli students 50 years ago, was prevented from speaking at a boycott event in Berlin and had her visa revoked by the German authorities. Odeh, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, had been due to speak at a conference organised by boycott divestment and sanctions (BDS) group Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East, on “Palestinian Women Fighting for Liberation”. The invitation drew harsh criticism from German politicians, from Israel, and

America, with both countries’ ambassadors, Richard Grenell and London-born Jeremy Issacharoff issuing condemnation of the German authorities for allowing her into the country at all. After days of complaints,

the government cancelled the conference and announced that Odeh was barred from speaking and had immediately to leave the Schengen Area, comprising 26 European countries. Odeh was responsible for a 1969 bombing that killed students Leon Kanner and Eddie Joffe in a Jerusalem supermarket. She was also convicted by Israeli for a second bombing at the British consulate and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1970 for her role in the bombings. She was released from jail in 1979 in a prisoner exchange and lives in Jordan after living in the US.

Jewish News meets... Jonny Benjamin

‘Let’s teach our children it is OK to be different’ J onny Benjamin, whose search for the man who talked him down from a bridge captured the public’s imagination, now works in Jewish schools talking to children about mental health and his struggle with his own sexuality. He spoke to Jewish News after a parliamentary debate where MPs expressed concerns of the strictly-Orthodox Jewish community on the government’s proposed new Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) guidelines, which would give a parental opt-out until the age of 15. Interview by Stephen Oryszczuk

Jewish News: When did you come out as gay? Jonny Benjamin: I came out when I was about 21, so roughly ten years ago. I went to JFS but at that time sex education was very basic. I think we had one lesson in which we were taught how to put a condom on and that’s it. There was no talk of different sexualities or genders. I’ve been very open about how the struggle to come to terms with my own sexuality was a massive contributing factor to my breakdown and hos-

pitalisation, and how part of the difficulty stemmed from me being brought up in the Jewish community. It’s changed since then, thank goodness. We now have groups like Keshet and Stonewall going into Jewish schools and talking to not just the children but the teachers too. Don’t forget, no-one ever tells a teacher how to deal with the child who comes to them and says ‘I don’t want to be a boy or a girl.’

JN: So for you, there is a clear link to LGBT+ identity and mental health issues? JB: Absolutely. The statistics bear this out. You see that children and young adults who identify as LGBT+ are hugely more likely to suffer mental health issues, self-harm, or even take their own lives. Trans pupils have enormously high levels of suicide. That’s why it’s so important teachers and schools talk to children and tell them it’s OK to be different – to be gay, or non-binary. JN: You’ll be aware of the debate in Parliament this week and the opposition to any kind of RSE in schools from the strictly- Orthodox commu-

nity, which refuses to teach children of any age that some people are gay. What do you say to that? JB: I just think it’s incredibly sad. The world has moved on. Even in the past five years, because five years ago groups like Keshet were struggling to get into schools like JFS and Yavneh, but now schools know how important it is. I’m saddened by the strictly-Orthodox reaction but not surprised. I actually think it’s even more important to tell these children that it’s OK to be different because unfortunately there is still a lot of stigma around mental health in the strictly-Orthodox community. JN: So you disagree with the argument that these things should not be taught? JB: I completely disagree. What I’ve learned from talking to children in Jewish schools is that children are so much more accepting of difference than adults. They’re incredibly tolerant and they’re OK with people being different, yet it’s the adults who are making decisions for them with this parental opt-out. It just doesn’t make sense. Today there’s social media, so children will hear and find out. It’s everywhere. Just this week, singer Sam Smith came out as nonbinary – big mainstream news. So children will see this and ask questions. It’ll prompt their own exploration of identity, and that’s a good thing. It’s already happening. Increasingly, when I go into a Jewish school to talk to the children, a teacher will pull me over to one side and tell me that a particular student has identified as nonbinary, neither a boy nor a girl. You can’t ignore it or escape it – it’s out there! JN: Ministers are mindful not to upset religious communities but also aware that sexuality and gender are characteristics legally protected from

discrimination. What do you see as the important points in that debate? JB: For me it boils down to an fear of putting ideas in children’s heads, but their answer is to suppress the discussion, and the more you suppress it the more mental health issues that raises, so it’s as important to talk to Jewish adults about differences in sexuality and gender as it is to talk to Jewish children. Some Jewish schools are starting to do this. Five schools have hired wellbeing practitioners and I understand that one of the things they’re doing is organising workshops with parents about RSE lessons and getting parental input. All this is incredibly important. We didn’t have any of this when I was at school, yet then as now you had children battling to come to terms with their sexuality. JN: So, essentially, the strictlyOrthodox community needs to ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’? JB: They need to realise it’s 2019. If you look around at all the problems we have – rising tension and conflict over Brexit, homelessness sky-rocketing, suicide now being the number-one killer of young people – to look at all that and still focus all your energy on fighting the government’s RSE Regulations, I just can’t believe that. I know they are voicing concern to ministers but there are also a lot of Jewish people who feel the opposite – that it is actually very important to teach children about different relationships and identities. Maybe we need to make our voices heard more. As I say, there is progress in mainstream Jewish schools. It’s taken a while but we are now breaking down these walls. Progress can feel very slow at times, but it’s so important we continue making it, because of this obvious link to mental health issues and LGBT+ identity. Let’s hope we can all become as openminded as the children are.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Wolf family had a miraculous escape

The rocket travelled 75 miles before it struck Robert Wolf’s house near Tel Aviv, injuring seven members of his family and embedding shrapnel in his five-month-old granddaughter’s head. As our interview with him this week shows, nothing divides people like war, but on a quiet Monday, going about their business in their home, Wolf’s family could be forgiven for not knowing that Israel was at war with Gaza-based terrorists. After all, the border has been relatively quiet, there has been no massive uptick in violence in recent days, the TV news has been all about the elections. The rocket, literally and metaphorically, came out of nowhere. Israel hit back hard, of course – the IDF strategy of deterrence in action – but Hamas said it wasn’t them. Perhaps it wasn’t. Right now Gaza’s barbarous rulers have every incentive not to start another war and zero incentive to do so. So, a lone ranger fires a lone rocket which triggers massive Israeli retaliation which triggers Hamas retaliation in turn. It’s the familiar story we’ve heard many times before, and will hear many more times yet. But as the news rolls on, amid the smouldering wrecks and ceasefire talk, three generations of a Jewish family lie dazed and damaged. They need to repair their bodies and their house, both having been smashed to pieces by the indiscriminate nature of hate.

Generosity of spirit

Jewish families have raised thousands of pounds for the family of Sri Lankan shopkeeper, knifed to death in Pinner on Sunday. The fact that the man was not Jewish could not have mattered less. He died senselessly and his family needs help. Over at World Jewish Relief, British Jews are busy raising tens of thousands of pounds for Mozambique to help its people deal with a devastating cyclone. This comes shortly after raising £200,000 for Indonesia in the aftermath of an enormous earthquake and tsunami. This is nothing new. Just four months ago, the community got behind a mother from Whetstone to set up the Adult Cerebral Palsy Hub, despite it being not just for Jews, while in Borehamwood Jewish schoolchildren donated their shoes for Syrian refugee children through the charity Goods for Good, despite most Syrians being Muslim. When needs must, our community answers the call.

BEGUM AND LESSON OF PURIM Maureen Weigert considers my letter [14 March] uncalled for. Unfortunately she is precisely the reason it was called for. Some people seem to have trouble grasping the fact Isis is a murderous, genocidal ideology which Shamima Begum bought into and as an adult expressed no regret for doing so. I see no reason to exonerate her. If Holocaust denier David Irving suffered a tragedy, should we expunge his record and treat him as basically a good chap who is just a little bit misguided? Maureen also says your cartoon was schadenfreude, but it did not focus on Begum’s personal misfortune but on the wrangle between the UK and Bangladesh, neither of whom, rightly, wanted to recognise her as a citizen.

PLAUDITS TO POLAND FOR BAN In David Irving we have a previously-convicted triple threat – Holocaust denier, antisemite and racist – who continues to peddle his lies and brazenly leads death camp tours. We are fully aware the terminology describing these camps as being of German orientation but situated on Polish territory is of vital importance to Poland and its people and possibly rightly so. Therefore it is also incum-

bent of them to grasp the mettle to show true character in banning Mr Irving from entering their country. Otherwise, should he be allowed to proceed with these hate-filled tours, their protestations regarding Poland and its people’s actual role in the atrocities of the Second World War might seem mere crocodile tears.

CLOSING SHULS THE RIGHT MOVE

THIS WEEKEND'S SHABBAT TIMES... Shabbat comes in Friday night 6.14pm

Maureen’s letter was published on Purim, when we rejoice at, among other things, the downfall of a murderous, genocidal maniac who planned the annihilation of the Jews. It is worth studying the mystical references in the final part of Megillah Esther to the hanging of the Nazis in 1946, and thinking ahead to the reminder we give ourselves at the Seder: in each generation, they rise up against us to destroy us. While schadenfreude is not something we should aspire to, when it concerns the downfall of those who conspire to annihilate us, Judaism cuts us a little slack. The last Isis stronghold fell at the time of Purim. Coincidence? Simon Aaron By email

“Will our seder be like the Brexit meaningful vote? Will the four questions be exactly the same?”

Regarding the email from Russell Ballen (Jewish News, 21 March) and his comments about the New Zealand atrocity and shuls closing in the aftermath, to say I’m dumbfounded would be an understatement!

We must show support and empathy for another creed. It is what we are about. We can observe our faith anywhere. Letters such as this don’t help our cause.

JOSÉ CARRERAS SAYS GOODBYE TO LONDON ON HIS FAREWELL TOUR

I was really spieled! Bravo Jewish News on your Purim shpiels last week. Banning chatting at the shul kiddush had me worried for a couple of paragraphs before the penny dropped! But the article by Quilliam’s David Toube was top-drawer satire. “Explaining” the banning of Rabbi Mizrachi from the UK for his personal views, he wrote: “Britain

has a right to control its own borders”. Hilarious! Thousands of jihadis are on MI5’s watchlist, Isis fighters are allowed back in the country – but we can all sleep easy now Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi (pictured) won’t be speaking in Golders Green! A brilliant piece that really had me well and truly Purim spieled!

the problem. As a Holocaust educator for many years, I feel young people are only learning about dead Jews. To give a balanced view, learning about Israel – a vibrant democracy – and what led up to its establishment should be a priority.

No wonder Jews and nonJews are indoctrinated to disingenuous stories surrounding Israel in the West Bank. The term “occupied” is incorrect. Jewish kibbutzim were established in the West Bank by the Mandate in 1922. When Jordan attacked Israel in 1948, Jews were thrown out. The land was recovered in 1967. That is not occupation. Arafat was offered 92 percent of the West Bank in 2002 but said no. Many Palestinians have a greater desire to kill Jews than create an economic success for themselves. Yachad seems to take a delight in looking for any opportunity to denigrate Israel, and its Kaddish episode last year is a sad reflection of that. Our Jewish youth need better opportunities to learn historical facts.

The word ‘Islamophobia’ is no longer fit for purpose MAAJID NAWAZ

FOUNDING CHAIRMAN, QUILLIAM

fter New Zealand, addressing anti-Muslim hate has naturally become a matter of urgency, and calls to define this type of hate have understandably intensified. What is less understandable is how Islamists have sought to capitalise on this atrocity to shield themselves and their ideology from any legitimate criticism. Using the deliberately vague misnomer “Islamophobia”, Islamists seized the opportunity that New Zealand presented to insist that any scrutiny of their reading of Islam, as opposed to hatred of Muslims, is cast as bigotry. In this context, the Mayor of London and the Labour Party’s formal adoption of the misnomer “Islamophobia”, and its definition put forward by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British

Muslims, set up by a controversial group called MEND, is a victory for Islamists. As a word, “Islamophobia” conflates scrutiny of Islam, a powerful world religion, with hatred of all Muslims. It is worth noting that it is primarily only Muslim-majority countries today that still impose a death sentence for, or otherwise criminalise, apostasy and blasphemy. In those countries where death is the punishment, such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Iran, it is Islam that is used to justify these laws and not without a plausible scriptural basis. To scrutinise and challenge an idea – like religion – that comes with so much power must surely be the right of every free-thinking individual, and formed the very basis of Europe’s Enlightenment. Only last week a professor was murdered on his own campus in Pakistan by a student who believed that mixed gender education was “anti-Islam”. And after the New Zealand atrocity, ex-Muslim atheist Armin Navabi had a talk

that planned to criticise my view that Islam today can be reformed, cancelled by Mount Royal University of Calgary in Canada from fear of offending us Muslims. This is why the word “Islamophobia” is too blunt. It fails, in principle, to distinguish between hating Muslims and criticising Islamic doctrine. Unlike other words that have drifted from their original meaning, away from polite liberal circles and among the most vulnerable of minorities within our minority communities, it is still used regularly and interchangeably to mean either or both. Islamists know this. They deployed this ambiguity in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo massacre. And they continue to do so after New Zealand. They seek nothing but an opportunity to reintroduce a blasphemy taboo through the backdoor. In allowing them this, we betray ex-Muslims, liberal Muslim reformers and those from minority sects. That latter category even suffered a murder on our streets in Glasgow for being “anti-Islam”. This is not semantics. The dead do not have the luxury to indulge linguistic laziness. And there are alternatives. The terms “Anti-Muslim hate” or “Muslimphobia” are more precise, and do the job nicely to address a very real and rising problem. This MEND-backed definition unhelpfully borrows from definitions of antisemitism. Though Islam and Judaism share much, Jews are more than a religion, they are also a national group, with a national homeland. Muslims – taken as a whole – are not. So it is ill-fitting for Labour and our mayor to have accepted the definition that Islamophobia is “…a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness”. The vagueness of this definition begs the question: is it now “Islamophobic” to criticise the misogynistic face veil as an

expression of someone’s “Muslimness”? It would indeed be an anti-Muslim hate crime to target such a person, but to criticise the practice itself surely cannot be. The guidelines continue: it is apparently “Islamophobic” to deny “Muslim self-determination”, whatever that means, when it doesn’t mean a sharia-enforcing state. The document cites Palestine and Kashmir as examples of “Muslim selfdetermination” but when did Parliament endorse terrorist groups Hamas’ and LET’s worldviews that these national struggles should be viewed as religious struggles? To preempt this criticism, the document provides the example that considering those “Muslim” states as terrorist states is “Islamophobic”. But Hamas controls Gaza, and is indeed a terrorist group. What’s so “Islamophobic” about saying that? The examples also conveniently leave out internal independence movements, like the secular Kurds. It should be clear by now that neither the word, nor the definition are fit for purpose. It is merely a conflation of genuine antiMuslim bigotry, with an attempt to shoehorn in and institutionalise a protection to shield Islamism and Conservative Islam from criticism. So how did this pass? In short, and guided by naive APPG member Wes Streeting MP, Labour allowed the pro-Islamists over at MEND to define hate. Naturally, they would define it in such a way so as to protect their own pro-Islamist dogma from being labelled as hate. A one-time founding director of MEND is Azad Ali, a man who actually lost a libel case against a newspaper that labelled him an extremist. As I often say, just as no idea is above scrutiny, no person should be beneath dignity. Politically lazy, intellectually dishonest and morally opportunistic Labour Party policy adoptions such as this ignore human dignity, and enforce only blasphemy taboos.

Don’t laugh too soon at Uri’s Brexit stunt JENNI FRAZER

I

don’t know about you but I’m in need of cheering up, what with all kinds of scaremongering about Brexit and having to take critical decisions as to whether to run down food before Pesach or stockpile like mad for our EU departure. Loo rolls, by the way, are parev in this scenario, as Brexit is apparently no respecter of bathroom requirements. I was therefore hugely encouraged to read about the somewhat late but nonetheless welcome intervention into the great national debate by none other than the self-described Israeli “mystifier”, Uri Geller. It is fair to say that Geller has a somewhat, er, chequered reputation. He has made a handsome living for more than 50 years, famously bending cutlery and demonstrating alleged psychic powers. The retired stage magician and sceptic James Randi, for one, has never believed in Geller’s claims and devoted considerable time

to trying to expose the Israeli as a con man. This in turn led to a number of suits for libel by Geller, one of which was settled out of court and the details of which remain confidential. Nevertheless, Geller has entertained the masses for many a long year and last weekend — hot on the heels, rather unfortunately, of Purim, which caused many Jews to wonder whether this was a Purim spiel — he wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, in whose Berkshire constituency he used to live before relocating to Israel. Trust me, this was not a Purim spiel, as Geller has previously expressed much that was in his open letter. He reminded Mrs May that he had predicted her becoming prime minister three years before she entered Downing Street, and, worryingly, that he had successfully predicted Trump’s presidential victory. Now here’s what brought joy to millions: Geller’s promise that with “the power of my mind” — validated, he says, “by the CIA, MI5 and the Mossad” — he is going to stop Mrs May leading the country into Brexit.

I CONFESS I WOULD RATHER LIKE URI TO BE PROVED RIGHT, BUT HE NEEDS HELP “As much as I admire you”, he has written, “I will stop you telepathically from doing this — and believe me I am capable of executing it”. It may well be that by the time these words reach Jewish News readers in print, Mrs May is no longer prime minister. But there is hope at hand, because Geller — who has rather an odd view of what it takes to get into Downing Street — has also pledged to bend the keys of No 10 “out of all proportion to ensure that [Jeremy Corbyn] never takes up residence there”. I should add at this point a memo to Geller — there’s usually a cop on hand to let the prime

ministers into the official residence – he or she does not generally need keys. However, while we are all having a good laugh at Uri Geller’s expense, I remember a lunch I had with him and several others, including the late Greville Janner. Janner was a member of the Magic Circle but he could not figure out what Geller was doing. We ate in the Lords’ Dining Room and after Geller had bent most of the spoons, he asked people round the table to draw things while he left the room. I drew a house, with a chimney, windows, door and a path. Geller came back and reproduced my drawing completely, with the chimney on the right side of the roof — something he also did under sterile conditions for the CIA. Yes, it was spooky and I confess I would rather like Geller to be proved right. He needs our help, though: we have to direct thoughtbeams at Mrs May twice a day at the singular hour of 11 minutes past 11. Everyone ready? Beam!

Gevalt campaign is already in full swing CALEV BEN DOR

BICOM RESEARCH DIRECTOR

n 1929, Lt-Col J L Schley of the US Corps of Engineers issued a warning: armies spend peacetime preparing to fight the last war rather than the next one. While the American’s comment turned into a soundbite, much less discussed is the political equivalent: the tendency by strategists to fight the previous election. As Israelis prepare to go to the polls, it is this mistake that could spell the end to more than 10 years of Benjamin Netanyahu’s rule. One of the most significant moments in the 2015 elections came in the final 48 hours. Polls showed Netanyahu losing ground to the Zionist Union and policy wonks discussed the approaching end of an era. What saved Netanyahu’s bacon became known as his gevalt campaign, a masterclass in scare tactics that, in the final hours, moved several seats to Likud at the expense of Naftali Bennett’s Jewish Home, leaving Netanyahu victorious again. While Jewish Home’s loss was painful, it

didn’t decimate the party. And like good foot soldiers, Bennett and Ayelet Shaked served faithfully in Netanyahu’s coalition as ministers for education and justice. Four years later, plus ça change... Again, analysts initially believed Netanyahu would breeze to victory. Again, with the clock ticking, polls show Likud trailing. And again – yet significantly earlier this time – the gevalt campaign is in full swing. Netanyahu is arguing three former chiefs of staff are leftists, weak and Hamas sympathisers in league with the ‘Arabs’ while stating only he can protect the country from existential danger. Whether his campaign will work or whether Netanyahu will become the boy who cried wolf remains to be seen. But ironically, it could be Netanyahu’s success in winning this battle that leads him to lose the war. Following the April election, the president is required to ask the MK with the best chance of getting a majority of 61 seats – rather than the leader of the largest party – to form a governing coalition. In light of this, analysts are better advised to count the numbers within the

THIS STRATEGY MAY HAVE WORKED FOR LIKUD ONCE BEFORE, BUT 2015 ISN’T NOW so-called blocs than the specific seats allotted to Likud or Blue/White. Viewed through this prism, Blue/White is in trouble. Despite generally leading in the polls, various permutations suggest the party will struggle to reach 61, even if it ultimately gains more seats than Likud. To counter this, the party is doubling down on an alternative strategy – creating a margin of victory over Likud so large the president will be hard pushed not to recommend it has first shot at forming a coalition. A well-worn phrase in Israeli right-wing circles is that one doesn’t shoot within the armoured personnel carrier (APC). Any fire

hurts all its inhabitants, including the one who shoots. So far, the right-wing parties have been disciplined in refraining from criticising their ideological bedfellows. But a recent report in Israel Hayom – the newspaper with its finger on the pulse of the ruling party and its leader – claimed the Likud campaign team was evaluating the possibility of trying to siphon off seats from Yisrael Beitenu, the New Right and the United Right. If polls continue to show Likud trailing, the APC may become very dangerous. Netanyahu’s 2015 strategy worked only because the cannibalised party still passed the 3.25 percent electoral threshold – but 2015 is not 2019. The plethora of right-wing parties competing means right-wing votes are already being diluted between ideologically similar bedfellows. Moreover, several of Netanyahu’s preferred coalition parties are already teetering perilously close to the threshold. One small push in the form of siphoning off seats to strengthen Likud could push them off the precipice. If that were to happen, Netanyahu could struggle to maintain his premiership, regardless of how many additional seats he gains.

‘Beards are now so trendy people think I’m from Hoxton!’ Francine Wolfisz speaks to actor Andy Nyman about his dream role as Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof

S

ome actors feel they are born to perform a role – but for Andy Nyman it really was genetics that convinced the award-winning actor he was the perfect choice to play Tevye. The 52-year-old star of Peaky Blinders and Ghosts Stories (which he also co-wrote) is currently treading the boards as part of Trevor Nunn’s production of Fiddler On The Roof, after the show transferred to the West End this week. When first offered the role, Nyman didn’t see much similarity between “the kid who had his barmitzvah in Leicester” and the tragic-comic milkman from Anatevka, but it turns out he was much mistaken. “As it happens, there’s a huge

amount that links me to the role,” he chuckles during a break from rehearsals. “I’ve been married for 25 years in the same way as Tevye. I don’t have five children, but I do have two, who are both grown-up and, like Tevye, I’m experiencing the same pain of wrestling between wanting to keep your children close and letting them have their own independence. “Then there’s also the Jewish stuff. I just had my DNA done and what I discovered is simply this: I am 99.9 percent Ashkenazi Jew. It’s like a Jewish joke – I spent £125, but I could’ve told them that!” Nyman also feels close to the character, thanks to his ancestry. His great-grandparents on his maternal side fled Poland and settled in Leeds in 1905, the same year

Raising the roof: Trevor Nunn’s show has transferred to the West End

Fiddler is set, while his ancestors on his father’s side left the Lithuanian shtetls of Kovna and Vilna a few years earlier. He had the chance to travel there five years ago while shooting BBC drama, The Eichmann Show. “It was amazing to be there and visit where my family had lived, as well as stand by the River Neman, which separates the two shtetls and from where my name comes. So emotionally and genetically I have a very powerful link to this role.” On a lighter note, there’s also the beard, something the usually cleanshaven Nyman has had to work on getting used to. But he hasn’t been mistaken for a rabbi, as he first thought he might. “Actually beards are so trendy these days that people are more likely to suspect I’m from Hoxton than a rabbi,” quips Nyman who, aside from acting, is a keen magician and helps develop shows with his friend, mentalist Derren Brown. “It’s now at the point where you’re eating and it either gets stuff in it, or the hair starts going into your mouth or tickling your nose, but I do rather love it.” For all his links to the role and Jewish credentials, Nyman remained adamant that the musical was strong enough to stand on its own and be subtle in its message.

Andy Nyman stars as Tevye and inset, with Judy Kuhn as Golde

He tells me: “One thing that always troubled me about previous productions is that it leans far too heavily on the Jewishness and suffocates it in schmaltz and sentimentality. What is more important is bringing out the truth of the story and playing it with authenticity.” The “truth” Nyman refers to on one level is a story about a man’s struggles to provide financially for his family, and on another, to keep them safe in an ever-changing world and the threat of persecution. Both are themes Nyman believes resonate strongly with today’s audiences. “One of the reasons I think this version of the show has landed as powerfully as it has is the timing of it – we would be naive if we didn’t say there’s been a visible rise in antisemitism and the issue of it within the Labour Party, so it feels incredibly pertinent. “But the truth is, in its nearly 60 years of life, the show has always been pertinent.” Perhaps that explains why

Fiddler On The Roof, Roof based on a series of short stories by Sholem Aleichem, remains one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. Or indeed why Nyman deems the soundtrack from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick as “some of the greatest ever songs written for a musical”. He adds: “Some of those songs have become such a fabric of life that people don’t even realise they are from the show. They are songs that are just tremendous.” Among them are To Life, Sunrise, Sunset, Matchmaker and, famously, If I Were A Rich Man. Nyman admits to “pinching himself” before he performs that iconic song. “Every night, when I’m about to go on stage, I can’t quite believe I’m playing Tevye,” he says. “Did you know I’ll be only the third actor, after Topol and Henry Goodman, to open Fiddler On The Roof in the West End? I’m not saying it with pomp and grandeur, but with a sense of wonder.”  Fiddler On The Roof runs at Playhouse Theatre, Northumberland Avenue, London, until 15 June. Not right on the money Francine Wolfisz unravels truth from fiction at a startling exhibition on Jewish stereotypes

F

rom the depiction of a devilish Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus for a mere 30 pieces of silver, to cartoons of hook-nosed moneylenders and gluttonous bankers rubbing their hands together in glee, Jews have long been victim to harmful stereotypes about money. So powerful is this idea, that even today’s Oxford English Dictionary still defines the word “Jew” to mean “a grasping or extorting person (whether Jewish or not), who drives hard bargains”, or as a verb, “to cheat”. That was just one of the many surprising revelations that feature in Jews, Money, Myth, a new exhibition at the Jewish Museum London, which attempts to unravel fiction from reality. Starting with the stereotypes, a medieval tax document on loan from the National Archives contains a handdrawn picture of three of England’s wealthiest Jews in the 13th century, including a man named Moshe, a woman named Avigail and the well-known Isaac of Norwich. They are surrounded by nefarious-looking individuals with horns, long noses and ferocious teeth, who are balancing scales and most likely committing some unethical act, such as coin-clipping or counterfeiting. Anthony Bale, professor of medieval studies at Birkbeck, University of London, who worked as an adviser on the exhibition, says: “At the National Archives in Kew, anyone wanting to view this document would have to do so in the same secure room where people look at documents related to terrorism, pornography or murder, because it is so controversial. It’s quite possibly the earliest anti-Jewish caricature ever recorded.” Bale also reveals that while the document insinuates moneylending was a typically “Jewish” profession in the middle ages, the reality was quite different. “Actually, only a tiny proportion of Jews lent money. It’s a complete myth that it was an exclusively Jewish trade, but one that was very powerful and enduring.” Those who were not involved in finance struggled to pay taxes to the crown and relied on communal charity, while those who did have money were often forced to hide their wealth, as evidenced by the remains of a hoard of coins found in Colchester that was likely buried by a Jewish owner. “It shows that even though you could have a lot of money physically, you were not necessarily any more powerful or secure as a Jew in England,” Bale adds. Medieval antisemitism was in part driven by

religion, with the Church leading the attack on Jews for being unethical money-grabbers. One of the highlights of the exhibition however shows not everyone followed this idea. A rarely-seen early painting by Rembrandt, dated 1629, depicts the lesser-known Bible story of Judas attempting to return the money he had taken. Distraught and penitent, Judas pleads with the priest for forgiveness. Yet the image of the greedy, thieving Jew continued to be all-pervasive. Moving through the exhibition to the “bankers and beggars” section, an array of antisemitic material shows how Jews came to be attacked for being both rich and poor. A particularly grotesque 19th century sculpture by French artist Jean-Pierre Dantan depicts Nathan Rothschild as a hideous beast clutching money, with his bulging eyes and growling face. It’s so offensive that the museum opted to turn the figure around, so as not to immediately startle visitors who come across it. Equally provocative is an 1830 caricature of a Fagin-like figure, with the caption: “11th Commandment: Get all you can, keep what you get, give away nothing”, suggesting that ruthlessness and greed are significant in Jewish teaching. But it’s not just the moneylenders, merchants and billionaires highlighted by the exhibition. It shows too how in reality many Jews have struggled financially over the centuries and how the concept of tzedaka has huge importance to Jewish life. “Despite the myths surrounding Jews and money, most Jews throughout history haven’t been rich,” says curator Jo Rosenthal, pointing to a letter written by a blind man appealing to his community for help in 11th century Alexandria. “When we talk about

Clockwise from left: An antisemitic French poster depicting James de Rothschild as a beast hoarding money; Rembrandt’s Judas Returning The Thirty Pieces of Silver, 1629; a Nazi propaganda book aimed at children; an English caricature about the Jewish 11th Commandment on greed; a ‘Little Jew’ charm from Poland said to bring good fortune

money, Jewish poverty often gets overlooked.” Moving into contemporary history, the exhibition explores how conspiracy theories began to evolve around the idea of Jews controlling the world for financial gain, starting with The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a fabricated antisemitic text. Professor David Feldman, director of the Pears Institute for the study of antisemitism, who also helped develop the exhibition, explains: “The protocols are often associated with Nazi Germany, but they were actually published in a British daily newspaper, The Morning Post, in 1920. Their circulation rose considerably during the time when they were published. “Even those who didn’t believe this, still came out with other Jewish conspiracy theories, including that Jews were behind

the French and Russian revolutions. Winston Churchill wrote an article shortly afterwards saying just that, while the Dean of Westminster dismissed the protocols, but said Jewish money was in league with German money during the First World War in an effort to take over Russian industry.” Jewish conspiracy theories continue today. One section lays out in detail how American multi-billionaire George Soros has become a victim of multiple false accusations, from orchestrating financial crashes and political coups to being a Nazi collaborator. Like other exhibits, the section on Soros makes for uncomfortable but necessary viewing, according to Dr Marc Volovici, research fellow at the Pears Institute for the study of antisemitism. “Talking about stereotypes is in a way allowing them more presence, but at the same time it’s hard not to address them without first understanding them.”  Jews, Money, Myth runs at Jewish Museum London until 7 July. So Dutch Dutch fun! fun!

Lucy Daltroff explores the lesser-known Jewish links to Amsterdam, learns about the city’s famous artists and enjoys a real gem of an afternoon tea

T

aking just 45 minutes to fly from London, I began questioning why I don’t visit Amsterdam more often. It has 100km of the most beautiful and most historic canals and an interesting quirkiness, as shown by both its “special” cafés and famous red light districts. Of course, there’s also an extensive Jewish history here in the capital of the Netherlands, and attracts millions of visitors to both the Anne Frank House and the extensive Jewish Historical Museum, a short distance away. Perhaps less well-known is the stunning Art Deco cinema instigated by Abraham Icek Tuschinski, a Polish immigrant who arrived in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 20th century and decided to get involved in what was then the new film craze. With the help of his brothersin-law, he raised four million guilders and opened what is considered to be one of the most beautiful cinemas in the world. The interior is sumptuous with a noticeable Asian influence. Tragically, during the Second World War, Abraham and his entire family were murdered in the concentration camps and the film theatre was renamed Tivoli. It reverted to its original title in the 1940s and is now part of the Pathé

brand, as well as being celebrated as one of the city’s treasures. Another Jewish influence is the famous and extremely luxurious De Bijenkorf department store on Dam Square, founded in 1870 by Simon Philip Goudsmit. During the occupation, Nazis were forbidden to shop there owing to it being a “Jewish enterprise”. It consists of 20,000 square metres and has, for the past eight years, been owned by the family that owns Selfridges. After touring the departments, I was taken up to the Room on the Roof, a refurbished accommodation in the building’s tower, which as well as offering amazing views over the town, is available to writers, musicians or artists. The idea is for them to later present

their work in the store, in whatever form, be it a poem in the book department, exhibitions in the atrium, or music in the fitting rooms. It’s the most original use of space in a store I’ve ever seen. The Amsterdam food scene, which has always been exceptionally good, seems to have upped its game since my last visit, especially with the construction of a number of five-star hotels. There are now more than a dozen of Michelin-starred restaurants in locations all over the city. The Rijksmuseum has its own, The RUKS* Michelin starred restaurant, where young chefs present innovative dishes in both taste and presentation. My pear starter with a tasty sauce arrived hanging from a little tree. The museum itself has reopened after a 10-year closure and is now almost unrecognisable. What hasn’t changed is the position of Rembrandt’s famous Night Watch. I was intrigued when our guide Margreet told us this was the given name for his work, because it had been covered for many years by a dark varnish. When it was eventually removed, a picture was revealed of the Militia Company of District II, whose job it was to protect the city – but it was too late, the original name had stuck and so it remains as The Night Watch. In the next room and painted by Rembrandt many years later is Jewish Bride, a favourite of Van Gogh during his younger years, which tenderly depicts early love: she is modest and shy, and he faithful and protective. This year marks 350 years since Rembrandt’s death, and there are numerous exhibitions and celebrations not only in Amsterdam, but also in Leiden, his place of birth. Of course, there is another famous artist of the city. I was invited to a press

Top: Amsterdam and its famous canals that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Above: The De Bijenkorf department store, and left, Lucy with a Tesla

conference at the Van Gogh museum, where I learnt 1,000 numbered exact replicas of the artist’s four small sketchbooks were soon to be up for sale. The fading covers and frayed elastic binding makes them so realistic they were quite thrilling to handle. The museum itself is vibrant and attractive, but who could not help feeling a little sad visiting and knowing that Van Gogh, the quintessential Dutch modern painter, only sold one painting during his lifetime? Many of Amsterdam’s new luxury hotels that have appeared over the past few years have cleverly turned the original, timeless, houses into spectacular spaces to stay. This is especially true at my hotel, the recently opened Waldorf Astoria, which spreads across

six of Amsterdam’s grandest 17th century canal mansions, on Herengracht, in the heart of the city, and yet also manages to incorporate a garden for the use of the guests. I enjoyed a special afternoon tea inspired by the DL Jewellery collection from Debora Huisman-Leeser. Presented as precious stones, rings and earrings in jewellery boxes, everything was spectacular and edible. The food and drink kept on coming, all for the competitive price of €42 (£36). Over the past decade, Amsterdam has quietly become a luxury destination, mainly centred around its UNESCO World Heritage Canal Ring and this, coupled with its many other attractions, makes it a very desirable place to visit.

LUCY’S TRAVEL TIPS Lucy flew with Royal Dutch Airlines KLM (klm.com) and stayed at the Waldorf Astoria (https://waldorfastoria3.hilton.com) where a King Grand Premier room starts from €667 (£572) per night, for two people sharing. For more tourist information, visit iamsterdam.com

SEDRA Shemini Parah BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS The week’s Torah portion is rather special, containing in the main reading the death of Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu, who brought “strange fire” to God and died for their pains, and then the extra reading of Parah – the red heifer. Neither the death of Aaron’s sons, nor the heifer, is explained. The former is assumed by many to be a punishment – either for exceeding their responsibility, or for being drunk in the service of God, while the latter is cited in rabbinic sources as the classic example of a chok, a mitzvah with no rational reason. Rashi says the Torah calls it a statute “...Because Satan and the nations of the world taunt Israel saying, ‘What is this commandment? What is the reason for it?’ Therefore the Torah referred to it as a chok, a statute: ‘I have decreed it (says God) and you are not permitted to question it.’” It is, according to this interpretation, beyond human understanding. Some see this as a test. Such commandments allow us to show our purity of service and love for God, that we do not question such laws. Rabbi Avraham Chayyim of Zlotchev says the Nations and Satan always seek flaws in us Jews and it is possible the purification of the heifer is linked to the sin of the golden calf. Similarly we might argue any rationalisation of the death of Aaron’s sons is pointless; they died, we learnt something from it, and it should not now be held against anyone. We can conjecture all we wish, but it is not really a fruitful pursuit. Sometimes, very rarely, nothing is to be gained by investigating.

What’s in a number?

This week, number...

Figuring out Jewish history

13

BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND Triskaidekaphobia sounds exotic, but is a remarkably common phobia of the number 13. Skyscrapers are built without a 13th floor; houses can jump from number 11 to 15. People even avoid travelling on Friday 13th. In Judaism, however, the number 13 is rich with positive associations. Maimonides famously elucidated his 13 Principles of Faith, such as the uniqueness and omnipotence of God, the immutability of the Torah, reward and punishment, and the guarantee of eventual redemption via a personal messiah. One of the more curious songs at the end of the seder, Who Knows One? also mentions the 13 Attributes.

Perhaps the most dramatic moment in the Torah revolves around the events of the Golden Calf. Furious at the idolworship days after the giving of the Torah, God threatens the destruction of those who took part.

IN JUDAISM, THE NUMBER 13 IS RICH WITH POSITIVE ASSOCIATIONS

Moses, through heroic self-sacrifice and prayer, persuades God to not only renege on His threat, but to teach him the 13 Attributes of Mercy, through which the Jewish people can gain mercy at even the most perilous of times. We relive this encounter when we recite this Hashem Hashem prayer, most famously in the Yom Kippur prayers. There are, of course, other sets of 13: the totality of the 12 Tribes plus the Levites; the 13 Principles of Torah exegesis, recited at the beginning of the morning service; the age of barmitzvah. Perhaps why it is an auspicious number relates to the Gematria (numerical value) of the word echad – meaning ‘one’ – which is 13. The number 13 relates back to One – God – and gives us a variety of ways to relate to Him in a complex world in which His Presence is not so easily perceived.  Rabbi Garry Wayland is the former assistant rabbi at Woodside Park United Synagogue

The Bible Says What? ‘Eat locusts and grasshoppers’

How do we tackle rising knife crime among the young?

BY RABBI MARK GOLDSMITH In Leviticus chapter 11, in the Torah portion Shemini, the list of foods which are kosher – fit for a Jew who keeps the Jewish dietary laws to eat – includes locusts, crickets and grasshoppers, all four-legged insects. Within the Christian Bible, John the Baptist, a Jew, subsisted on locusts during his desert meditations. A few years ago, Rabbi Harvey Belovski presented a memorable session at Gefiltefest, the Jewish food festival, showing how to identify a kosher locust by a marking on its underside that resembles the Hebrew letter chet. The locust , he explained, was a part of the diet of Jews in countries where locusts are common, such as Yemen. In recent years there has been much public concern about environmental damage caused by our reliance on meat protein from mammals producing beef and lamb, as well as overfishing, making our reliance on fish protein equally unsustainable for an expanding world population. As a

result, the Reform youth movement, RSY-Netzer, caters vegetarian on its camps and vegan where possible. One possible solution to humanity’s long-term protein needs is for more of us to eat insects (like crunchy locusts). Today, one third of the world’s population include insects regularly in their diet. Insects use far less of the earth’s resources to breed than mammals or birds do, contain up to 70 percent protein plus amino acids and high levels of minerals good for human health, such as iron. As the world tries to cope with a population expected to rise to nine billion by 2050 it may be that including locusts and similar in our diet will be part of the solution to keeping us all fed and healthy. Like fish, they don’t need kosher slaughter and they can be eaten with cheese sauce – or even covered in chocolate!  Rabbi Mark Goldsmith serves Alyth Synagogue

BY RABBI NATHAN GODLEMAN “Do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbour” (Leviticus 19:16) Whatever we think about the causes of the spate of knife crimes in recent weeks and months, one thing is clear: we need to engage. We are not immune to it, wherever our homes and synagogues happen to be. I have felt this closely over the past fortnight, with a near-fatal attack on the nephew of someone I know and the killing of the 17-yearold girl in the park where my brother’s own children play. I had to phone my brother to see if my niece, who is the same age as the victim, was safe. What of the families where the answer to such a question has been ‘no’? Knife crime is not isolated to any one community, neither in its perpetrators nor its victims. To understand more, one could do worse than watch an interview

with rapper and activist Akala, broadcast on Channel 4 on 5 March, for which a link can be found on the Facebook page of South London Liberal Synagogue. Using statistics to help challenge the claims of politicians and headline writers, Akala quotes the case of Scotland where stabbings were once more frequent than anywhere else in the UK. The key to a major reversal there was to treating the phenomenon as a public health issue. In other words, a progressive approach worked: education,

instead of draconian measures; diverting young people in a more productive direction at a point in their lives where they are particularly vulnerable. “Why are young people killing each other with knives?” I was asked by my acquaintance, whose nephew, thankfully, is now on the road to recovery. He could not understand how someone could do such a thing as stab someone, as it was so different from his own experience growing up (in Jamaica, as it happens). We need to imbue young people with the same feeling, so the very thought of committing such an act is abhorrent. And so that no more lives are taken, no more families left bereaved.  Nathan Godleman is the rabbi of South London Liberal Synagogue in Streatham

LESLEY TRENNER CAREER ADVISOR

RESOURCE Dear Lesley How do I update my CV without letting a potential employer see I’m the wrong side of 50? Jonny Dear Jonny A CV should be a PR document, not your life story. The trick is to select your most recent and relevant achievements.

Employers shouldn’t discriminate based on age. Sadly some do, although many are now realising the advantages older workers bring. There are many ways to make your CV ‘ageless’. Never include your date of birth and don’t include the date of your first job or when you went to university. Avoid phrases such as “30 years of experience” and focus on the last 10 years of your career – what you did 20 years ago is probably not relevant now. Pick your words carefully to show you are familiar with today’s job market and business terminology. Some jobs don’t really exist any more, such as ‘secretary’ or ‘switchboard operator’, so it’s better to focus on

through this, can be very distressing but please don’t think that there is no way forward. Technology today is amazing and there is so much that will help your wife continue living life as she always has – from scanners that read the labels on cans and jars to glasses, developed in Israel, that read to you and can even be programmed to recognise faces. Our new independent living advisor can visit you in your own home and go through the aids, technologies and adaptations that will make a massive difference to your wife’s quality of life. And if you decide at any time that a move into one of our specialist developments of one and two bedroom mobility apartments, with support on site and on call 24/7, would be best for both of you, then she can discuss that with you too. Please email ila@jbd.org or call 020 8371 6611 ext 613 for more information.

transferable skills such as being organised and a good communicator. Small details can also make a CV seem old-fashioned: using a Times New Roman font, listing your ‘O-levels’ or including companies that went out of business years ago. If possible, highlight the fact you are good at picking up new technology and using social media. For jobseekers of any age, it’s important for your CV to show you are a good fit for the job and to indicate how you could add value. Dear Dov There is an established process for calculating the costs for your move. I, or one of my colleagues, will survey your home well prior to the move and arrive at a total volume for your shipment. At that time, we will also take note of any items that may require special handling such as long pieces of furniture or artwork or a piano etc. I appreciate that, at the time of survey, you may not yet have decided on a property in Israel. It will be necessary, therefore, to look closely at the proposed property and check whether or not we can easily access with a large truck or semi-trailer or need to provide a smaller van to shuttle everything

from the container to your new home. In addition, we would look at the distance from the nearest parking space to your property and, within the property, the ease or difficulty that we might expect to deliver each item to its intended location. For example, if an upper floor apartment, is there a large lift/elevator and will we be able to use it to convey everything to your floor? In Israel, we work closely with our Israeli partners with whom we have been working for 25 years or more. They are able to decide whether or not we will require a shuttle or an outside elevator perhaps. If we have your new address in good time, then they can assess the ease of delivery.
