are proud to support the following charities... Through its network of 18 shops ALL ABOARD raises vital funds to support mainly Jewish Charities and some non-Jewish charities with their work. We raise our funds by selling second hand goods, both in our shops and online, which have been very kindly donated by the local community. We are unique in that we don’t support just one charity, but many. We recycle on average, over 6 tonnes of household items per week which would otherwise be dumped in landfill. This helps to protect and preserve our environment.

Alison* and her young children needed emergency safe accommodation, after a sudden escalation in her husband’s ongoing abusive behaviour on a Friday morning, and he shoved her hard against the wall. The donation from All Aboard was invaluable, as we were able to provide a taxi to take her and her children to a hotel for Shabbat.
All Aboard have been extremely passionate and supportive about our work both on and off stage. Receiving donations from All Aboard has enabled us to provide extra support for children and young people with disabilities during workshops and performances. This is vital as some of the children and young people we work with find it difficult to cope with change so having a person they have built a trusting relationship with by their side on and off stage gives them the extra encouragement they need to have their time to shine.
“We organised kosher food, toiletries and toys at short notice, all thanks to All Aboard” She’s now getting specialist help from JWA, to enable her and her children to be safe and to heal. *not real name
Maccabi GB are leading the way and connecting with many who would otherwise be lost to the community. As in previous years, our aim is to improve the quality and standard of all our events, which will encourage many young Jewish people to become involved in the community. Through these projects, young Jewish people get to meet each other and connect with our community.
“It is only with the support of All Aboard that our growth and development will continue to strengthen the future of our Jewish community”
“We are so grateful to All Aboard for their ongoing support” Funds donated by All Aboard have enabled us to send entertainers into hospitals to brighten the days of children and teenagers who are seriously and terminally ill. As well as bringing laughs and smiles, we are also giving these young people the opportunity to experience normal childhood activities they would otherwise miss out on as a result of their illness and a long stay in hospital.

High five ! Bibi clings on for record fifth term Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to form another governing coalition and secure an unprecedented fifth spell as Israel’s prime minister after voters gave his Likud Party the platform it required to continue in power, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Despite diverging exit polls following Tuesday’s election, by Wednesday most votes had been counted, and both Likud and the party of Netanyahu’s main challenger – Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz (pictured, inset) – were expected to win 35 seats each. The vote was seen as a referendum on Netanyahu, whose indictment on corruption charges was called by Israel’s attorney-general six weeks ago, after a two-year investigation. The election, involving more than 40 parties, was one of Israel’s tightest – pitting the incumbent against the three former army chiefs of staff and the IDF’s first female majorgeneral.

Israeli Election / Netanyahu’s ‘victory’
King Bibi’s reign goes on Continued from Page One However Blue and White (B&W), which declared victory on Tuesday night and thanked Netanyahu for his service, is now set to lead Israel’s opposition, despite the final result not being known until Thursday, when soldiers’ votes are counted. “Netanyahu is on his way to forming another right-wing government, with a clear majority and far-right members, perhaps in significant ministerial positions,” said Dr Nimrod Goren, director of the Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies (Mitvim). Emeritus Professor Colin Shindler from SOAS, University of London, said the large turnout for B&W and Likud signalled “a return to twoparty politics and a swing from the far-right to the centre-right”. Shindler said: “The electorate placed security and economic wellbeing above any moral judgement of Netanyahu – better the devil you know syndrome.” B&W is a merged group jointly led by ex-Israel Defence Forces (IDF) chief Gantz and former TV presenter Yair Lapid, who served as finance

Veteran Israeli commentator Nahum Barnea likes to compare Israeli elections with the old joke from the British Army during the First World War. After several weeks of tough fighting the commander gathers his troops and tells them there is good news and bad news. The good news is that you can all change your underwear. The bad news is that you need to swap with each other. So, Benjamin Netanyahu looks set to form a very similar government to his last, including the two Orthodox parties and Moshe Kahlon’s Kulanu, who could seek a return to the Finance Ministry. Likewise, Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beteinu may want to return to the Defence

Ministry he quit in December, demanding a more robust approach to Hamas. It is far from certain Netanyahu will allow that, since the understandings formulated by Egypt looks to be moving in a positive direction. But there is no doubt that Netanyahu is the big winner of the election. Despite the shadow of corruption charges, he managed to increase Likud’s share of the seats. The dominant issue was a referendum on his leadership and he got an impressive mandate. He should now overtake the David Ben-Gurion to become the country’s longest serving leader. Credit also goes to his main rival, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz. The challenge for him now is his staying power in the less glamorous role as Head of the Opposition. Despite unpleasant campaign rhetoric, this was another victory for Israel’s vibrant democracy. Richard Pater is Israel director at Bicom

minister under Netanyahu until 2014, after forming the Yesh Atid party and winning 19 seats in his parliamentary debut. Gantz and Lapid had agreed to alternate in the role of prime minister if they were tasked with forming a governing coalition for the next five-year term, but analysts always warned this would be difficult given the parliamentary arithmetic. The task of forming the next government – a process of horse-trading that can take several weeks – is constitutionally offered by the Israeli President, currently Likudnik Reuven Rivlin. His job is to offer it to the politician he judges best able to build a ruling coalition comprising at least 61 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. That is set to be offered to Netanyahu, who is more acceptable to a posse of smaller Orthodox, right-wing and religious-nationalist parties. This week’s vote saw the biggest ever share of seats for Orthodox parties – 16 in total – and a drop in seats for Arab parties compared to the 2015 election. Netanyahu’s ‘victory’ / Israel Election Shindler warned that “potential coalition partners from the small parties will exact a high political price for passing an immunity law”. One of the night’s biggest losers was Zehut, a right-wing libertarian party led by Temple Mount agitator Moshe Feiglin, who was banned from entering Britain in 2008. With populist policies such as the legalisation of cannabis, he was expected to gain four or five seats and play kingmaker, but instead failed to make the cut. Likewise, the New Right also failed to reach the parliamentary threshold of 3.25 percent. Led by Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked, who broke away from Jewish Home, they had been hoping the strength of their personalities would be enough. The two big Orthodox parties are natural Netanyahu allies. United Torah Judaism and Shas have both previously served in his governments and have refused to serve with Lapid, who has called for an end to the Charedi IDF exemption. Almost 200 progressive British Jews watched the election results come in at the JW3 culture centre in Finchley Road, listening to a panel of Israeli and Palestinian experts convened by Yachad, New Israel Fund and One Voice. Reacting to the results, Yachad director Hannah Weisfeld said: “While
we may be set to witness the formation of another Netanyahu-led government, a significant number of people in Israel voted for change and this is a reason to remain hopeful.” Indeed, Gantz and Lapid have reason to cheer. B&W outperformed all expectations, with its promise to clean up Israeli politics, impose a three-term prime ministerial limit, amend the Nation-State Bill, allow civil marriage, expand egalitarian prayer space at the Western Wall, invest in education and health and bring more women and Orthodox Jews into the workplace. The other big story of the evening was the dissolution of the Labor party as a political force, managing
only six seats, while low Israeli Arab turnout also reduced the Arab bloc’s ability to swing events. Although Gantz has ruled out governing with Netanyahu, there remains an outside chance of a “national unity government” – not seen in Israel since the 1980s – if Netanyahu feels he is ceding too many ministries to smaller parties. Israel’s ultimate “political survivor” may yet extend a hand to his former military chief given that, for the first time in recent elections, the two biggest parties could now form a government on their own. That which is ruled out on the campaign trail isn’t completely ruled out. Editorial comment, page 32

Praise for Bibi – but also caution British Jewish leaders congratulated Benjamin Netanyahu on what seems like a fifth term as prime minister, but cautioned against the “deeply alarming rhetoric” heard throughout the election campaign. While acknowledging Netanyahu’s “significant achievement,” Board of Deputies’ president Marie van der Zyl said it was a “polarising campaign”. Van der Zyl said: “Politicians from all sides need to work hard to build trust with every section of Israeli society and not take actions and decisions which deepen divides.” Speaking at the JW3 culture centre on Tuesday night, Palestinian social entrepreneur Ruba Huleihel agreed that the 2019 election would be remembered “for its divisiveness and personal attacks,” but all main parties were culpable. In one such instance, ex-IDF chief of staff and former defence minister Moshe
Marie van der Zyl
Ya’alon, who ran alongside Lt Gen Benny Gantz for the Blue and White party, accused Netanyahu of “treason” in the run-up to the election. Netanyahu in turn accused Gantz of being blackmailed by Iran. Meanwhile, Michael Ben Ari, the leader of the far-right Jewish Power party, became the first election candidate to be banned from running, for suggesting anyone who speaks ill of Jews should be executed.
The Zionist Federation congratulated Netanyahu, adding: “This is how democracy plays out. [Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud] Abbas should take note.” UK Jewish group Na’amod said: “As British Jews, it is painful to see our communal representatives congratulating Netanyahu when they stayed silent as he ushered far-right extremists into the Knesset.”
The obliteration of progressive views BY TOMER PINES
CHAIR OF YOUNG LABOR IN ISRAEL
The election result carries significant and historic meaning only acknowledged by a few, namely the near-complete obliteration of progressive Zionism in Israel. The mandate for Israelis who support peace, a welfare state and civil equality has fallen from 56 seats during the Rabin administration to 11 seats today. The process isn’t coincidental, and left-wing Israelis must be aware of it. The gradual weakening of the Zionist left stems from the 1990s and the way Israeli debate is dictated by the rightwing, led by Netanyahu. They have incited, divided Israel’s population segments, and mercilessly struck their political opponents. The Israeli left stands in shock, having failed to create a different agenda. In its weakness, the left’s strategy became ‘wearing a

costume’, that is aligning its positions with those of the right. In doing so, it neglected the battlefield. The Israeli left gave up on its own agenda, wore its leaders down and failed at the ballot box. The lack of an alternative meant Israelis yet again put their trust in the right, which recognised this lack of genuine competition and radicalised its political positions against Arabs and the media. There are no shortcuts in politics. Those who believe in democracy, equality and peace must re-examine and realise to win support you must show the public your position, not wait to see theirs. The Zionist left must also build bridges with Israeli Arabs – a fifth of all Israelis. To not do so is to fall into a right-wing trap, and to shirk a minority that just wants to incorporate into Israeli life.

At Pesach there is a subject close to our hearts and perhaps yours too – food. Our Dietetic Assistant Practitioner, Tiffany, knows that good nutrition is vital to care of the elderly. It can keep muscles stronger and prevent falls for example. Appetite often declines as we age. But as the average age of our residents increase, and the complexity of their care issues grow, it’s never been more challenging to make sure each person has the right nutrition. Take one of our residents like David, for example, who because of advance dementia likes to spend many hours simply pacing the corridors. ‘Walking makes me happy’ he told her. ‘I get to see what’s going on.’ But as a dietician she worried because we couldn’t persuade him to sit down for long enough to eat a full meal. We created a special high-energy cereal bar packed with calories which David can eat on the move so he gets the energy he needs. Local Authority fees don’t cover the costs of Pesach. As a kosher care home we want to help all pout residents celebrate Pesach whatever the cost. We need your help this Pesach. Please make your gift to Nightingale Hammerson today.

JLM hands Corbyn no-confidence vote The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) has passed a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. The motion was passed “overwhelmingly” at its annual general meeting on Sunday. A motion noting the “crisis of antisemitism” within the party since Corbyn’s election as leader was passed “almost unanimously”. The no-confidence motion was passed despite a plea from shadow attorney general Bar-
oness Shami Chakrabarti not to “personalise” the issue by focusing on Corbyn because he “won’t be leader forever”. The JLM meeting took place after Labour again found itself embroiled in a row over its handling of antisemitism complaints after a newspaper said it had seen leaked internal documents showing the party’s system for dealing with complaints had been beset by delays, inaction and interference from the leader’s office.
Katz wins vote to become JLM chair Mike Katz won the election to become the next chair of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) and stated solidarity is a two-way street. He told Jewish News: “If MPs, councillors, MSPs etc are clear, consistent and strong in backing us, we will be clear, consistent and strong in backing them.”
Katz, who beat incumbent national chair, former MP and minister Ivor Caplin, said JLM was now “working to rule” and the party leadership was on “a final warning”. Stoke MP Ruth Smeeth took up the position of parliamentary chair after Luciana Berger was hounded out of the party owing to antisemitic abuse.

Mosque attacks / News
Let’s see what stay and fight looks like BY JOE GOLDBERG
EXECUTIVE MEMBER, JLM, AND FORMER LABOUR COUNCILLOR The Labour Party was founded to ensure working people could stand on their own two feet. Poale Zion – now Jewish Labour Movement – was founded prior to the Labour Party to ensure Jewish working people could stand on their own two feet. Our affiliation to the Labour Party is predicated on us sharing these endeavours. Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership has now created a schism in our solidarity. On Sunday, in electing its new chair and in passing a motion of no confidence in Corbyn and the general secretary of the Labour Party, we reclaimed the spirit of Dov Ber Borochov, our founding father. It was he who identified that for Jewish working people to progress, we must first achieve recognition and liberation as a Jewish nation – ultimately through the realisation of the Jewish state – and then as working people. Every Jewish person knows we are small in number, and this dictates that we will always be a small part of the Labour Party. It makes our decision to stay and fight to secure our
platform within the party even bolder. It is for this very reason we made the decision to not only pass a motion of no confidence in Mr Corbyn – we made clear he is unfit to be prime minister. There can be no doubt now that our decision last month to remain affiliated was not a motion of confidence in the leader, but a recognition that remaining within our party gives us more opportunity to win. That is why we also defined what “stay and fight” looks like. It is no longer going to be good enough to tweet condemnations. We expect elected members of the Labour Party to be affiliate members of ours and, if not, explain why. We expect them to explain why they have not taken action to tackle antisemitism when it exists in their own Constituency Labour Party. We expect them to demand antisemites are withdrawn from political groups. Already the Labour Representation Committee (LRC) – key defenders of Jackie Walker – has evoked the antisemitic trope of Jews being backstabbers with calls for us to be expelled from the Labour Party. Our actions have been noticed. Its president is Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell. He must now resign from the LRC. Anything less makes clear he is on the wrong side of history and represents a hostile threat to Jewish working lives.

‘COSMOPOLITAN’ TWEET CAUSES UPSET A trade union official has refused to apologise for an “antisemitic” comment about Brexit that referred to “rootless cosmopolitans”. Paul Embery tweeted on Sunday: “I fear this encapsulates the divide in our society – between a rootless, cosmopolitan, bohemian middle-class […] and a rooted, communitarian, patriotic working-class.” The remark followed an exchange of messages about Brexit sent in response to a tweet by Gary Lineker questioning support for ending freedom of movement.
ADVISOR SACKED OVER SOROS INSULT A government adviser who was knighted in 2016, has been sacked after referring to a “Soros empire” in Hungary and defending its prime minister Viktor Orbán against allegations of antisemitism. Speaking to The New Statesman’s George Eaton, Sir Roger Scruton, 75, said: “Anybody who doesn’t think there’s a Soros empire in Hungary has not observed the facts.” Scruton, who was chair of the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission, also dismissed allegations of antisemitism levelled against Orbán as “nonsense.”
Falconer shares party fears Lord Falconer has become the most senior Labour figure yet to suggest the party’s actions on antisemitism could render it institutionally antisemitic, writes Justin Cohen. The former Lord Chancellor’s stark warning came after The Sunday Times published details of a leaked database suggesting hundreds of complaints of antisemitism have yet to be resolved. Echoing the Macpherson definition of institutional racism, Fal- Lord Falconer
coner – who had been poised to take over a review of the party’s disciplinary process – told Jewish News: “Can antisemitism be detected in the party’s processes, attitudes or behaviour which amount to discrimination through unwitting prejudice, ignorance, thoughtlessness and racist stereotyping? Looks frighteningly like it as every day goes by.” The Equalities and Human Rights Commisson (EHRC) is currently deciding whether to launch a statutory investigation into Labour after saying it may have “unlawfully discriminated against people because of
their ethnicity and religious belief”. Iabour vigorously denied the claims, responding to the EHRC last week. The Jewish Leadership Council’s Jonathan Goldstein labelled the party institutionally antisemitic last year in the wake of the controversy over the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, which Labour only adopted with all its examples after a huge row with MPs and community leaders. Luciana Berger repeated the term when she resigned from the party. Falconer was in the process of agreeing terms with Labour to conduct a review when the EHRC intervened last month. The peer said at the time the EHRC “may well” move to an offi-
cial probe – a move he would welcome to shine a “bright light” on how disciplinary complaints have been dealt with. This comes as Labour’s general secretary Jennie Formby wrote to MPs, complaining that a Sunday Times report on the way the party dealt with antisemitism was “selective and misrepresentative”. She wrote: “The Labour Party is clear – we take all complaints of antisemitism extremely seriously and we are committed to rooting it out. “All complaints about antisemitism are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures. For data protection and confidentiality reasons, we do not and cannot comment on individual cases.”
MOMENTUM DIRECTOR REMOVED The former head of Labour’s disputes panel, who claimed the antisemitism row had been “stirred up” to attack Jeremy Corbyn, has been removed as director of Momentum. Christine Shawcroft hit out at Momentum on Facebook last month for withdrawing
its support for Pete Willsman, after he was recorded calling some members of the Jewish community “Trump fanatics”. In the post, she wrote she had offered to stand down as director if she got a “guarantee that the nonsense last year about withdrawing
support from someone on an agreed NEC slate, then again objecting to an excellent candidate for the NCC, wouldn’t happen in future” but she did not. Shawcroft told Jewish News: “I was extremely concerned about a small number
of officers taking a decision to remove support from Peter Willsman for the NEC elections, and then again they didn’t want to support Stephen Marks for the NCC.... “I wanted assurances they would be more democratic in future.”

Charities boycott Brunei Jewish Care will no longer be hosting events at The Dorchester Hotel for the foreseeable future, as calls to boycott the venue grow over Brunei’s anti-LGBT law. The Jewish charity said it would boycott the venue and any other hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei for future events. This comes after Brunei adopted a new law punishing homosexual sex and women charged with adultery with death by stoning. The new law prompted a campaign led by George Clooney and Elton John for a boycott of the Brunei Sultan’s hotels, including The Dorchester. Jewish Care’s director of fundraising and community engagement Adam Overlander-Kaye said: “Last month Jewish Care hosted its annual
Young Jewish Care’s Patron’s dinner at The Dorchester. This will be the last event we host at this hotel, or any other hotel owned by the Sultan of Brunei, for the foreseeable future”. Magen David Adom UK said it would actively seek alternative venues to The Dorchester for its annual dinner in November owing to concerns over human rights in Brunei. A spokesman for Magen David Adom UK confirmed it had held events in The Dorchester twice since 2017, but he added: “However, in light of the ongoing human rights issues in Brunei, which contradict our core humanitarian values as a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross, we will be actively seeking an alternative venue for this year’s annual dinner in November as well as all future events.”

Airbnb reverses West Bank ban Airbnb has reversed its decision to remove West Bank settlement listings from its website. The policy change was decided following a court settlement on Monday between the holiday rental company and a dozen American-Jewish plaintiffs who sued the company, organised by Shurat Hadin-Israel Law Center, a pro-Israel law organisation. A copy of the settlement obtained by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency says Airbnb will now allow rentals in both Palestinian areas and Israeli settlements of the West Bank. “Airbnb takes no position on the Host-Plaintiffs’ claims, or others’ claims, to legal title to the properties on which the accommodations are located,” the court settlement reads. “All listings for accommodations located in the Affected Region [the West Bank] will at all times be per-
mitted on its platform, subject to applicable laws, rules, and regulations.” Airbnb announced in November that it would remove some 200 rental listings in West Bank settlements, because it contended that the settlements “are at the core of the dispute between
Israelis and Palestinians.” The movement to boycott Israel saw the decision as a victory. But Airbnb never removed the listings. A week after the decision, Shurat Hadin organised the suit on behalf of a dozen AmericanJewish families, most of whom own properties in West Bank settlements. The suit was filed under the Fair Housing Act, which was meant to prevent discrimination against minorities in the United States. As Airbnb is based in the United States, it must adhere to the act in all its rental listings worldwide. In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claimed that Airbnb was discriminating against them for being Jewish, given that it still allowed listings by Palestinian Muslims and Christians in the West Bank.
“The policy Airbnb announced last November was abject discrimination against Jewish users of the website,” Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the president of Shurat Hadin, said in a statement. “Whatever one’s political view, discrimination based on religious affiliation should never be the solution.” In a statement, Airbnb said it does not support the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement targeting Israel and will donate any profits from the West Bank to humanitarian groups. It also will apply the same policy to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two disputed territories adjacent to Georgia, and evaluate its listings in other disputed territories. Airbnb has yet to announce where it will donate the profits.
GENIUS BIOLOGIST MOURNED A revolutionary Jewish biologist who won a Nobel Prize for his work at Cambridge University has died aged 92. Born in South Africa in 1927 to a Lithuanian father and a Latvian mother, Sydney Brenner’s beginnings were modest. His father, a cobbler, was illiterate, but at the age of four Brenner taught himself to read from newspapers, which were used instead of tablecloths, “by looking at letters and finding out sounds”.
He later joked he only ended up at medical school aged 15 “to escape” and achieved his degree aged 18, writing his first paper that year. A scholarship to Oxford soon followed, and he went on to make some of the most significant discoveries in the history of biology, transforming the understanding of how life works at the molecular level. Brenner discovered the letters in a DNA sequence that determine which
amino acids ribosomes should use to assemble proteins. He also established the role played by RNA in carrying the “code of life” held in the DNA sequence. Francis Crick and Brenner, who received a Nobel prize in 2002, worked together at Cambridge for 20 years, their work marked by “a series of brilliant, sudden insights”, according to peers.

Rachel Riley at the Nisa-Nashim conference
Some mostly 250 Jewish and Muslim women at an event featuring Countdown host Rachel Riley and Met Police commissioner Cressida Dick have pledged to stand shoulder to shoulder against racism. The group launched its #ActiveAllies campaign at an annual conference hosted by the Jewish and Muslim women’s network NisaNashim at the University of Westminster on Sunday. Delegates vowed to
encourage and enable Jewish and Muslim women to speak out about hatred against their faith groups and against all other women. Among the pledges was a commitment to urge political parties to review processes for preventing and dealing with Islamophobia and antisemitism. The group held a vigil for the victims of attacks in Christchurch and Pittsburgh, with delegates praying together and per-
forming a song featuring lyrics in Hebrew, Arabic and English. Dick told delegates: “It’s important to celebrate what we have in common... to recognise differences and respect them. “And it’s important to work together for a better future.” Laura Marks and Julie Siddiqi, co-chairs of NisaNashim, said: “The time for talking is over, now it’s time for us to take united action.

Holy-day! Madonna set to rock the stage at Eurovision UK wins Eurovision (sort of) as Netta finds out she’s British! Israeli Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai is officially a little bit British, after a DNA test revealed she is 1.5 percent Celt. The singer discovered more about her genetic roots ahead of this year’s competition, which takes place in Tel Aviv next month. It showed that she is 51.4 percent Sephardic Jewish from North Africa, 45.4 percent Ashkenazi Jewish, with 1.7 percent Baltic and 1.5 percent Irish, Scottish, and Welsh. Barzilai, who met Prince William on his visit to Israel last year, was able to trace her family tree back nearly 300 years, and said she had a lifelong affinity for Irish people. Her great-grandfather Natan Barzilai, a blacksmith, was from Tomashov Lubelski in Poland. The family’s name was Szpisajzen before it was changed to Barzilai. As part of the project, DNA researchers from MyHeritage traced the Szpisajzen family to several buildings in the town, including her great-grandfather’s home.
Madonna fans will cherish this: the queen of pop is set to perform at the Eurovision final in Tel Aviv next month. Israel’s public broadcaster KAN confirmed the 60-year-old icon will make an appearance on stage, with the expected $1million (£770,000) cost being met by Israeli-Canadian billionaire Sylvan Adams. Her Eurovision gig will mark the fourth time Madonna has performed in the Holy Land, following on from shows in 1993, 2009 and 2012. Madonna has also enjoyed personal trips to Israel previously, having become an active follower of Kabbalah after an introduction by her friend, Jewish actress Sandra Bernhard. Following her reported appearance at this year’s Eurovision grand finale, which will be held on 18 May, boycott campaigners called on Madonna to reconsider the event. An open letter from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) – part of a boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign – suggested her appearance would be used by the Israeli government “to mask its deepening oppression of Palestinians”. The statement posted to social media read: “Palestinians hope that you will not undermine our struggle for freedom, justice and equality by performing at

Jewish Care has unveiled its new 64-bed care home, Anita Dorfman House, which has just opened at Sandringham in Stanmore.
It is expected that the first residents, who are currently staying at Princess Alexandra House on the 16-acre site, will move in next month. The project was supported by the Dorfman Foundation and named after Sir Lloyd Dorfman’s mother Anita, aged 91. Sir Lloyd said: “We are thrilled to be associated with Jewish Care’s new visionary Sandringham campus and to have supported the new care home. “We wanted to honour my mother, and are delighted that so many people will be looked after in
this home bearing her name.” Jewish Care president Lord Levy said: “Today is an exciting milestone for our hugely ambitious Sandringham development. “We are extremely grateful to Sir Lloyd Dorfman and his family for their generous support, which has enabled us to honour Anita Dorfman by naming the new home Anita Dorfman House – a new home for current residents at Princess Alexandra House and members of the wider local community.” Anita Dorfman said: “I am thrilled to lend my name to Jewish Care’s new home. Measles scare on El Al flight An El Al flight attendant was taken to hospital after contracting measles on a flight from Tel Aviv. She was unconscious and on a respirator, according to initial reports. It is also thought the she had been vaccinated. The Jerusalem Post said a passenger with the virus had boarded the flight to New York. Israel has seen a serious outbreak of measles recently, due mostly to lower than average vaccination rates in the Charedi community, and two Israelis have died from the disease. Charedi communities in New York who also have low vaccination rates have similarly reported measles outbreaks.

Film pair seek refugees saved by Dutch heroine Dutch film-makers are asking British Jews for help on a documentary about a social worker who became a Holocaust hero helping 10,000 Jewish children to safety on the Kindertransport. Resistance fighter Geertruida Wijsmuller-Meijer, nicknamed Truus, was honoured as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, for her wartime efforts – including smuggling children out under her skirt. In December 1938, she travelled to Vienna and managed to arrange the departure of a Kindertransport train packed with 600 Jewish children. Of
these, 500 went to England and 100 went to the Netherlands. For the next nine months, she worked with Sir Nicholas Winton and others to arrange similar transports for Jews stranded in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden to England and unoccupied France and Spain. On the day Holland surrendered, she helped to smuggle 74 Jewish children from an Amsterdam orphanage to a Dutch port where they boarded the freighter SS Bodegraven to Liverpool . The Dutch filmmakers, Pamela Sturhoofd and Jes-
sica van Tijn, are giving a talk at the Association of Jewish Refugees on 14 April. They are calling for any British Jewish families with relatives who may have been saved by Truus to get in touch.
Seven students of the Montefiore College have been awarded their rabbinical diplomas at a ceremony at Bevis Marks Synagogue. The four or five-year part-time Montefiore Semicha study course is one of only two in the UK accepted for membership of the Rabbinical Council of America, alongside the Gateshead yore-yoreh simicha. The Montefiore Endowment has now trained more than 20 new rabbis, including senior clergy from across the Orthodox religious spectrum. Graduates have gone on to serve in the US, Australia, Hong Kong, Turkey, Germany, Portugal and Israel. The diplomas were signed by Dayan Ezra Basri, Rav Yosef Carmel, Rabbi Zalman
Nehemia Goldberg, Rabbi Abraham Levy, Rabbi Nahum Rabinovich and Rabbi Lord Sacks. The UK contingent includes rabbis from the Sephardi Community, the United Synagogue, the Federation of Synagogues, Chabad and Charedi kehillot, described as “a rare example of religious inclusivity and one that is heartwarming to behold”. The Montefiore Endowment is motivated by a desire “to strengthen Anglo-Jewry’s middle-of-the-road tradition”, which its says is fast being eroded by the extremes of the religious right and the religious left”. It approaches halachic decision-making “with mildness, stresses the middle way and avoids extremes”.

NUS DISQUALIFIES STUDENT OVER POST A student running for a role in the National Union of Students (NUS) has been disqualified from the election following “antisemitic” social media posts. Zeid Truscott was running for a seat on the NUS national executive committee, which is the main scrutiny body for NUS’ political leadership. Chief returning officer Jules Mason tweeted: “Despite being informed of the potential of disqualification, a candidate has not complied with my ruling in respect to a complaint made about them concerning antisemitism. I have disqualified the candidate.”
Hasmo has a million reasons to say thanks A school appealing for donations online has raised more than £1million in under two days – smashing their £750,000 target. Hasmonean High School set up a campaign on Sunday morning on the fundraising platform CauseMatch, asking for donations from members of the community. The campaign collected donations from more than 1,300 people, with a group of governors, trustees and com-
munity members doubling each donation made. Among the donors, Benjamin and Dr Shoshana Perl contributed £10,000, writing on the fundraising campaign website: “With admiration to a top school.” Moishe and Shmayah Stimler also donated £10,000, writing on the page: “Thank you all the staff and governors of the school, wishing this event every success.”
Hasmonean High School raised £1m via an online appeal
In an email to parents, executive headteacher Andrew McClusky expressed his “deep gratitude” to all those involved who made the campaign “such a fabulous success”. He thanked fundraising chair Ben Shooter and his wife Katie, governors Jacqueline Benjamin and Jonny Feinmesser, fundraising coordinator Dawn Murray and parent Simon Dryer for supporting the campaign. “My thanks extends to their whole families as I know that so much family time was sacrificed to ensure this campaign succeeded,” he wrote. “I have said it before and I will say it again: the strength of Hasmonean High School is the community that it serves. “At a time when all schools face huge financial challenges, due to government funds decreasing and staff costs rising, these funds have never been needed more.”

Dr Martin Stern, Susan Pollack, Lily Ebert, Maurice Blik and Dame Penelope Wilton at the HMD 2020 launch
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT)’s theme for 2020 has been announced as ‘Stand Together’, urging people to fight hatred and remember the victims of racism at a time when “identity-based hostility is increasing”. On Tuesday, educators revealed plans for next year’s day of remembrance, as a new national commemorative project was launched with the help of sculptor and Shoah survivor Maurice Blik. The theme was launched at a ceremony in London attended by Shoah survivors Susan Pollack, Lily Ebert, Dr Martin Stern and Blik, as well as Safet Vukalic, a survivor of the Bosnian genocide, and actress Penelope Wilton.
The theme explores how genocidal regimes deliberately fracture societies by marginalising communities, and how this can be challenged by individuals uniting and speaking out against oppression. Olivia Marks-Woldman, chief executive of the HMDT UK said: “During the Holocaust and genocide, communities were deliberately divided and individuals persecuted because of their identity. Despite the dangers, some people chose to stand together with those targeted, challenging the divisive actions of genocidal regimes.” “At a time when we know identity-based hostility is increasing, it is important we stand together with others facing prejudice.”

Yavneh College has confirmed it will open a one-off bulge class for the next academic year to offer an additional 30 places in Year 7. The Borehamwood school, situated in one of the largest Jewish communities in the UK, made the decision in response to growing demand for places. Executive headteacher Spencer Lewis said: “We are pleased to be able to help families without school places for September by providing them with the first-class secular and Jewish education of which we are so proud here at the Yavneh schools.” A spokeswoman for Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS), a division of the Jewish Leadership Council, said the organisation was “delighted” by the news. “It is an important decision that will help ease the waiting lists across all the schools in north-

But PaJeS said it remained “concerned” about the growing need for places in schools across the community. “We have approached the Department of Education with options of either building a new school or expanding the current provision. We are hopeful they will approve one of these options shortly.”
UJS gives antisemitism training The Union of Jewish Students (UJS) is set to deliver training on antisemitism to the executive body of the National Union of Students (NUS) after a motion was passed at the latter’s national conference in Glasgow on Tuesday. The motion, together with another condemning Islamophobia, was put forward by Bristol student Sally Patterson, daughter of former Board of Deputies’ senior vice-presi-
dent and Mitzvah Day founder Laura Marks. “Antisemitism is unacceptable in all its forms,” the motion read. “There is a problem with antisemitism in the NUS and the student movement, and previous efforts by NUS to challenge this have clearly not been working.” The UJS, in its 100th anniversary year, said the motion’s adoption represented “hugely positive strides in combatting
antisemitism on university campuses”, according to UJS campaigns organiser Daniel Kosky. “We look forward to delivering antisemitism training for the NUS National Executive Committee. “There is still a long way to go to ensure that NUS is fit for Jewish students. “We hope to continue our collaborative work long into the future.”

News / Cancer claims / Annabelle mourned
Mother is accused of faking cancer for cash A Jewish mother has been charged with fraudulently raising more than £45,000 in cash from the public after pretending to have cancer and needing funds for treatment. Nicole Elkabbas, from Edge End Road, Broadstairs, Kent, was investigated by detectives who questioned whether she actually had the deadly illness she claimed to have in an online fundraising campaign. Elkabbas, 40, was charged last Friday with six counts of fraud between February and August 2018, during which time she was said to have wrongly accepted £45,350 from compassionate donors. Elkabbas described herself as working in PR for Qatar Holding, a global investment house, having previously worked as an executive manager of jewellery and fashion accessories at Harrods.

She was also known for her appearances as a standup comedienne, with promoters claiming she was due to hit TV screens with a new comedy sketch show for Channel 4. Promoters wrote of her: “A Londoner that is now proud to be Kent based, has spent most of her working
career in the luxury fashion sector, having grown up in both north and east London.” Elkabbas has been granted police bail pending a court appearance on 2 May before Margate magistrates. A spokesman for Kent Police said: “A Thanet woman has been charged with fraudulently accepting £45,350 in donations for an illness she allegedly did not have. Nicole Elkabbas is charged with six counts of fraud following an investigation by detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate. “She is alleged to have falsely claimed to have required treatment for cancer in order to receive donations from members of the public, between February and August 2018.” Jewish News reported on Elkabbas’ online fundraising campaign last March.
Warm tributes to ‘bubbly’ JFS pupil Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a 22-year-old former JFS pupil believed to have plunged to her death from the eighth floor window of a block of flats in Enfield. Annabelle Lancaster was found with severe injuries in a car park near the eight-storey Brookbank building on Sunday afternoon. Police say she died at the scene and confirmed they had arrested a 26-year-old man on
suspicion of murder. He has been released on bail to return on a date in late April. A friend who gave her name as Courtney, 22, laid flowers at the spot where she was found. “I knew Annabelle from when we were staying in a mother and baby unit together,” she said. “I know she was really close with her family, especially with her mum. “She was one of those really bubbly girls, always up for

Memorial song / Neonatal fundraiser / News
Donnie’s legacy sees family raise £25,000 for care units The family of a baby boy who passed away at just 142 days old in 2017 have raised a staggering £25,000 to provide extra help in neonatal intensive care units, writes Adam Decker. Marcel and Ruth Berenblut’s son Daniel Ephraim – aka Donnie – was born with Edwards Syndrome, a genetic disorder. He weighed 1.7kg (3lb 3oz). In his first few weeks, Donnie’s lung collapsed, he developed an infection, and doctors worried about the weakness of his heart. Surgery was ruled out. As Donnie approached four weeks, Marcel and Ruth told friends and family he had already lived longer than doctors expected. Aged 50 days, with the help of two nurses and a host of medical equipment, including his everpresent feeding tube and oxygen supply, Donnie made it out of his ward “as far as a view of blue skies, trees and red buses”. At eight weeks, he went outside for the first time, for a family picnic in the park. “This is about him feeling the sun on his face and the wind in his hair,” his parents wrote.

“And about us enjoying his life with him and creating memories.” Donnie passed away in September 2017, but not before seeing Trafalgar Square, Regent’s Park, Hyde Park and London Zoo with his family, including brothers Rafi and Ami and sister Yael. In a moving journal entry written during Donnie’s final days, now posted online, Ruth says: “I have always believed I could deal with anything which came my
way. Not because I am strong but because I am pragmatic. And for 136 days that was more or less true. “But that time is over and this week Donnie has needed me to be immersed in the present – to be still and to hold him close ... my challenge is to be kind, to stroke him and talk to him when I am tired and numb and weakened by watching his decline even though I know that he is unaware of it, and not to be hard on myself if I can’t.”

Kinder in New York New York’s performing arts college, The New School, has joined forces with The Kindertransport Association in America to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the wartime rescue movement that brought around 10,000 Jewish children to Britain. For three days this week, ending tomorrow, there are performances, screenings and panel discussions. The highlight is a US premiere of Carl Davis’s Last Train To Tomorrow, a dramatic work for orchestra, actors and a children’s choir, based on the story of the Kindertransport. Musician and composer Davis, 82, is American-born, but has made his home in London since 1961. It is the fifth performance of his work that he has conducted, which he decribes as an emotional journey each time.
At the forefront of the commemoration is Ilse Melamid, née Hoenigsberg, who is a member of The New School’s board of governors and herself a Kind. Ilse was born in Vienna in 1928. Her father ran an interior decorating business while her mother looked after her and her younger sister. After Kristallnacht in November 1938 her father was interned in Dachau, and when he was released after a year, fled Austria for Italy. Ilse remembers: “I was excited about the journey [out of Vienna] and did not foresee it was a forever goodbye. I recall staying overnight with a Dutch family, before sailing from the Hook of Holland for London.” But when the Kinder arrived in Liverpool Street Station, Ilse was collected by a childless couple who took her to their
home in Prescot, Lancashire, where she was deeply unhappy until she left, aged 14. “By the time I was 18 I lived alone in London, worked as a secretary, taught stenography but had very little secondary education.” Ilse’s mother and sister were sent to Theresienstadt and later to Auschwitz. In 1950, after surviving being interned in Italy and having searched unsuccessfully for his wife and younger daughter, her father moved to Australia where he had family. Ilse decided to join him but, tragically, he died before she arrived. Will Milberg of the New School for Social Research, which is taking part in the programme, said: “The Kindertransport provided sanctuary for children. Sanctuary is also at the heart of what we do. Our university in exile brought nearly 200 scholars from Nazi Europe to the US.”
Moscow takes part German companies in Good Deeds Day donate to Yad Vashem Thousands of Russians took part this week in the annual global charity event, Good Deeds Day. On 7 April, which was also World Health Day, campaigns were organised by the Jewish student organisation, the Hillel Russia, attracting volunteers in Moscow, St Petersburg, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk, Penza, Krasnoyarsk, and Saratov. Good Deeds Day in Russia brought together over 1,000 Moscow students, charity fund volunteers, activists and caring people. This year, participants in Moscow took part in one of 10 charitable activities, including dog walking, blood donation, and collecting clothes for homeless people and low-income families. The project was supported by Genesis Philanthropy Group, the Joint Distribution Committee and The Challenger.
United Nations condems both Islamophobia and antisemitism In the wake of the New Zealand mosque attacks, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning both Islamophobia and antisemitism. Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon led a diplomatic effort to change the wording of the resolution, which initially included a condemnation of Islamophobia, but had no mention of antisemitism. The ambassador convinced several states to avoid supporting the resolution if it did not mention antisemitism. After the debate, he said: “Our diplomatic efforts have shown we will not allow the international community to remain silent while a wave of antisemitism spreads throughout the world.” Noa Forman, who represented
UN ambassador Danny Danon
Israel in the discussion, said: “We strongly condemn this horrifying act of terrorism. It is critical that the General Assembly sends a strong message against a religious base, hatred and hate crimes, but we must do it in such a way that
unites us all.” Jonathan Cohen, acting Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, referred to the deadliest attack against the Jewish community in the US. He said: “Many of us in this room represent nations whose people have been victims of terrorist attacks. Americans know all too well the pain of such attacks, most recently with the attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Yazidis and Christians victimised by Isis also know this pain. “Opposing this terrorism unites countries around the world. While we’ve made progress in our fight against terrorism, we must remain vigilant. Together, we must continue to fight terrorism and all its forms wherever it exists.”
Five German companies – Daimler, Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Bank, Volkswagen and the football club Borussia Dortmund— have announced they will donate €5 million to Yad Vashem. Making the declaration in Berlin last week, the companies said they viewed the initiative as “a clear sign of our solidarity with the victims of the Holocaust, and as our responsibility, past and future, in the fight against racism and antisemitism”. Yad Vashem houses the world’s largest collection of Holocaust-era artefacts, and will build new space for archiving and research. The aim is to secure the museum’s collection for future generations. Construction of the new 45,000 sq ft Shoah Heritage Collections Centre is set to begin in August. The five German companies said they were “committing ourselves to understanding between nations, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence”.

Jewish News and Chelsea team up for Holocaust education Gala fundraising dinner at Stamford Bridge for Imperial War Museum’s Holocaust Galleries
C
helsea Football Club in partnership with Jewish News held a gala dinner last week to raise funds for the Imperial War Museum’s new Holocaust Galleries in London, writes Adam Decker. The event, presented by comedian David Baddiel and titled Light From The Dark, was attended by 350 guests including British Olympic Association former chairman Lord Coe, Chelsea FC chairman Bruce Buck and Rabbi Nicky Liss for the Chief Rabbi. Attendees heard from Holocaust survivor Freddie Knoller who delivered an inspirational message saying: “We survivors are fighting to ensure the world never forgets what happened and to ensure it never happens again. I believe I am alive today because of my attitude to life – I fought for survival and continue to do so.” On his own experiences as a descendant of Holocaust survivors, Baddiel said: “It seems odd when discussing the Holocaust to be inspired by stories, but the worst events can often bring out the best in people. My grandparents survived, which I think is an inspiration of itself. Tonight was
a great, uplifting and important event. Well done to Chelsea for supporting the Imperial War Museum’s efforts to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive.” The museum in London is expanding its Holocaust and Second World War galleries and creating a new learning centre to become the first in the word to connect physically and thematically the Holocaust with the Second World War. The new galleries will open in 2021. Almost 90% of the funding has already been secured – thanks in no small part to a donation from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich – leaving £2million still to be raised. Diane Lees CBE, Director-General of the Imperial War Museums, said: “It is incredible to be here tonight and hear from survivors. On behalf of the Imperial War Museums, I’d like to thank Roman Abramovich, Bruce Buck and everyone at the Chelsea Foundation for organising this fascinating evening. “We shall soon be in a world where there are no living witnesses to the events of the Second World War and the Holocaust, so our duty to educate future generations has never been more pressing. “We are delighted to be working in partnership with
Chelsea Foundation’s ‘Say No to Antisemitism’ campaign, which highlights the importance of education and awareness of the past to ensure a better future for us all.” Chelsea’s Say No to Antisemitism campaign recently won an award at the London Football Awards. The project, launched in early 2018, includes an educational programme on antisemitism and its effect on Jewish people and the wider community. Chelsea FC chairman Bruce Buck told Jewish News: “This is a very important event enabling Chelsea to partner up with the Imperial War Museum, bringing awareness to their Holocaust project and our antisemitism project. Education is crucial to help solve antisemitism and the Imperial War Museum is pulling together a project which will certainly help. Buck added: “All sporting institutions are doing good causes of different kinds. We hope other football clubs in the UK and other sporting institutions worldwide will start their own antisemitism projects, and we would be happy to assist others.” Under the direction of club owner Roman Abramovich, the club’s dedication to
Holocaust education has also included Holocaust survivor Harry Spiro attending a meeting of the first team to speak about his experiences, and an event in Parliament hosted by House of Commons Speaker John Bercow. Guests also heard from Judge Robert Rinder, who recalled his experiences on the BBC show Who Do You Think You Are? In a powerful address, Rinder warned: “It is critical to remember that this hate did not emerge all of a sudden – it emerged against the backdrop of democracy. It took place because people forgot to protect democracy, to think about it and above all forgot to remember. We will not forget to remember because organisations like the Imperial War Museum are the custodians of truth who help us and future generations. While we help them, we protect democracy.” Journalist Hella Pick, who arrived on the Kindertransport from Austria, also discussed her experiences with Michael Attenborough, whose family hosted two German-Jewish girls for seven years from 1939. The evening featured a live auction bid, with prizes including a private tour of the

Guests also heard the Topaz String Trio performing works by the composer Hans Neumeyer written before his death in Theresienstadt in 1944. Robert Singer, CEO of the World Jewish Congress, which has worked closely with Chelsea FC in countering antisemitism, said: “Chelsea is doing a fantastic job in leading the charge against antisemitism in sports. “The only way to deal with Holocaust denial, and all forms of antisemitism and hatred, is through strong leadership. This means publicly denouncing and condemning antisemitism whenever it rears its head. Premier league players are leaders and role models among young people and fan bases, so the fact Chelsea has taken a stance on this is very significant and important.” Speaking to Jewish News, Lord Coe added: “I’ve spent my whole life fighting discrimination in sport in any guise or form, so for me this is a very instinctive place to be. “Sport is the number-one social worker in every community and we need the world to recognise the work sport is doing.” Reflecting on the evening, Jewish News editor Richard Ferrer said: “We are proud to have teamed up with Chelsea Football Club for such a momentous event. It was incredibly moving to spend the evening in the company of survivors and see first hand what the Imperial War Museum’s magnificent work means to them.”

HOW ROMAN ABRAMOVICH INSPIRED OUR CAMPAIGN BY BRUCE BUCK
CHAIRMAN, CHELSEA FOOTBALL CLUB
In 2017, Roman Abramovich instructed all of us at Chelsea to ramp up efforts to tackle antisemtism on and off the pitch. This is how we came to launch our Say No To Antisemitism campaign – a wide-ranging initiative to tackle antisemitism and to educate fans, football and the wider community on the dangers of intolerance. Since we started the campaign, we have become convinced that education is the absolute key to making a difference. Understanding history plays an important role in changing attitudes, and we are proud to be able to contribute to a new landmark gallery that will benefit millions of visitors from around the world and improve education and awareness about the Holocaust. The club was privileged to host a fundraiser for the Imperial War Museum (IWM) London’s new £30.5 million Holocaust gallery, at Stamford Bridge last week. We

The event, From Darkness into Light, was hosted by comedian and writer, David Baddiel, and we were honoured to hear the memories and stories from Holocaust survivors and those saved in the Kindertransports. The evening was both moving and inspirational and I’m sure that none of our guests will forget it. Through teaching, learning and remembering what has happened, we can continue our fight against anti-Semitism and ensure an act of such hatred never happens again.

Israelis say: better the Bibi we know The Israeli ballot papers listed dozens of options, yet for most voters there were only two: with Bibi or against him. Benjamin Netanyahu, four-term Likud prime minister, was recommended for indictment on serious corruption charges just six weeks ago, after a twoyear police investigation and an extended review from Israel’s attorney-general. However, when he refused to resign, few thought he was a spent force. This election proved that to be true and the feeling was perhaps best summed up by religious voter Yaacov Lemash, 76, who said: “It was the first time I voted for Bibi. I know some of the things he did were wrong, but I’m not looking for a rabbi. I’m looking for a leader.” The recommendation – pending a final hearing – could yet see him serve far less than his full term, but if he puts together a coalition of the willing, as seems likely, he could push through laws granting himself immunity from prosecution. Those who voted for ‘anyone but Bibi’ see reasons to cheer. Bibi’s challenger, Benny Gantz, Netanyahu’s former IDF Chief of Staff, lacks his charisma, but his security credentials are second to none. With a matching 35 seats, Gantz came from nowhere to become a major political force. The opposite is true of Labor, which founded the Israeli state, but has now stopped talking about two states. The Israeli left has been “obliterated”, but the signs were there. A recent poll showed 63 percent of Israelis now identify as rightwing; only 15 percent left-wing. And the young are the most right-wing of all. Netanyahu’s other Trump card is the US president, who did all he could to help his friend. He moved the embassy. He recognised the Golan as Israeli. He closed Palestinian diplomatic offices in Washington. He designated Iran’s military a terrorist entity. He shredded the Palestinian aid budget. All he needed was a hat reading “Make Bibi Great Again”. Yet 35 seats means the electorate listened when told by the 6ft 5in General that Israel needed a change of direction. With Netanyahu’s promise to annex West Bank settlements, Gantz could be right. Even Netanyahu’s hawkish US backers have balked at his policies of late, while US Democratic frontrunner Beto O’Rourke called Netanyahu an outright “racist” this week. Don’t be surprised if Bibi doesn’t follow through. Three days before the 2015 election, he said he no longer favoured a two-state solution. A day after the election, suddenly he was in favour again. It was an old Bibi trick, from an old survivor, who showed his colours again in this election. As the going got muddy, Bibi got slinging. So, it is a case of ‘carry on as before’. Better the Bibi you know. Smaller parties will side with “King Bibi” as his rule continues.

TRUMP’S A FLAWED BUT TRUE FRIEND I was delighted to read a short but highly significant item in a recent edition headlined “Trump recognises Israeli ‘sovereignty’ over Golan” (Jewish News, 28 March). Many people (Jewish and otherwise), do not have a good word to say about the US president. However, while I consider that much of what he says is wrong, disrespectful and even incendiary, he reminds me of Megillah Ecclesiastes 7.20 – “For there is not a just man upon Earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” The reverse is surely true of President Trump, especially in his dealings with Israel.

Recently, on 25 March, Trump recognised Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. On 9 May last year, he pulled the USA out of the Iran nuclear deal, while on 6 December 2017, he affirmed the USA’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The American Embassy has now been relocated there from Tel Aviv. I don’t condone much of what President Trump says and does, but recognise he is a true friend of Israel. The verse in Ecclesiastes applies to many other politicians and world leaders – who don’t have a good word to say about Israel. J D Milaric By email
PUTTING BEGUM WITH BERESHEET CHEAPENS ISRAEL’S SPACE SUCCESS Your correspondent Simon Aaron still does not seem to grasp the point of my original letter. This was not just that Shamima Begum was an easy target but that the cartoon featured Beresheet, the Israeli moonshot, and Israel is a
country not involved with the issue of whether Britons who joined ISIS should lose their citizenship. Surely we should be applauding Israel’s successful moon launch, not using it for propaganda.

SUPPORT YOUR SAFE HAVEN Although I have sympathy with your reader Janet Maltz (Letters, Jewish News, 4 April), I for one am not surprised at the low level of Jewish support she experienced at the recent demo carried out by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. It appears that in the UK where matters regarding Israel are concerned, that giant of a nation in the Middle East can be left to stand on its own two feet and its people left to support themselves. However, as far as British Jews are concerned, many have traditionally voted Labour. Although they might now vote otherwise at any future election, their protestations against anti-
Zionist and anti-Israel views have previously been somewhat muted to say the least, and at times their silence unfortunately has been quite deafening. We are faced with the turmoil created by the Brexit negotiations, meaning an election might come about soon. With the possibility of a shoo-in for Jeremy Corbyn, it is time for concerted action to galvanise collective Jewish minds, as what was once considered a nightmare might indeed become reality. British Jews should stand proud in their support for Israel, as it might turn out to be a safe haven.

Roger Water’s criticism of Israel as ‘the murderer of children by cowards with sniper rifles from behind fortified positions’ asserts Jewish soldiers are murdering infants. Considering shots are fired into crowds intent on storming the border of Israel with all that that implies, his certainty such deaths were intentional is over-emotional and a huge presumption. Nor then should the idea that such an act reflects the policy of a country be tacked on to this assertion.

MUCH MORE THAN TOMATOES Two letter writers on 28 March, Angela Goldstein and Mervyn Smith, reached the same conclusion: today’s youth is ignorant of the facts surrounding Israel’s birth and current situation. There is a charity, Middle East Education (www.middleeastedu. co.uk) that exists in order to fulfil this need. Its speakers, a Muslim and a Jew give balanced talks together about the subject of ‘Arab-Israeli Conflict, Both Sides of the Story’. Its once very-generous donation is no longer adequate, as the demand from schools around the country, both mainstream and independent, as well as Jewish and non-Jewish, has grown so

well-known maverick activist Shraga Stern, who has positioned himself as a friend of Corbyn, in contrast to much of the mainstream Anglo-Jewish community. There are, of course, benefits for Corbyn to publicly display good relations with what the outside world think are authentic Jews – certainly many Stamford Hillites conform to uninformed nonJewish ideas of what Jews look like. And Stern has transfixed his community by launching an unprecedented attack on Yesodey Hatorah School principal (and long-time Labour local politician) Rabbi Avrohom Pinter, calling him a “kapo” – and refusing to apologise for the insult. Part of this war of words is Stern’s apparent determination to be top Jew in Labour’s eyes, rather than Rabbi Pinter. He describes himself as “a proud and loyal member of the Hackney Constituency Labour Party, and it will always be my privilege to meet the leader of the Labour Party to discuss matters of mutual interest”. Centrist Jewish organisations have, for a long time, seemed to sideline the concerns of the strictly-Orthodox, although there
S
omething murky is going on in Stamford Hill. It seems there are three main issues swirling around the strictlyOrthodox community, although it’s easy enough to imagine that it’s all one ongoing row. One is the argument about whether or not parents should vaccinate their children, in light of renewed outbreaks of measles in strictly-Orthodox circles. The second is opposition to government policy on the teaching of LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) issues in schools – and a chance to attack the Chief Rabbi, whose authority is largely not accepted in Stamford Hill, for his more emollient rulings on LGBT. And the third, inevitably, is the always divisive figure of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was briefly the talk of Stamford Hill last month over a planned meeting — which was then cancelled – to meet Rabbi Herschel Gluck and other Charedi activists. The meeting was brokered by the now
❝
CENTRIST JEWISH GROUPS SEEM TO SIDELINE CONCERNS OF THE STRICTLYORTHODOX have been some successful co-operative interventions, such as the campaign relating to St Pancras coroner Mary Hassell and her unacceptable policy over death registration. While the Board of Deputies has always said it would like to have Charedi representation, no president of the Board has successfully persuaded Charedi people to become deputies. And such is the fragmentation within Stamford Hill that it would be a Herculean task to figure out who represented whom. Thus a handy vacuum has been created for Shraga Stern to persuade Jeremy Corbyn and Hackney Labour MP, Shadow Foreign Secretary Diane Abbott, that he speaks for the strictly-Orthodox.
Both Stern and Rabbi Pinter, in point of fact, are opposed to LGBT teachings in Orthodox schools, but Stern’s allegation that Rabbi Pinter was a “kapo” – a vile insult – apparently stemmed from his belief that Rabbi Pinter was getting far too cosy with government ministers in his attempt to oppose the issue. Frankly, I don’t see how Stern’s own cosying up to Corbyn is any different. He says himself: “As recent national events are demonstrating, he is a prime minister ‘in waiting’. In these troubled times it is essential that British Jewry maintains contact with all the country’s political leaders. Not to do so would be an act of extreme folly”. In such troubled times, indeed, such as the endless repellent catalogue of antisemitism within the Labour Party headed by the “prime minister in waiting”, it’s too easy for Stamford Hill to write off criticism by mainstream British Jewry; and too easy for official Anglo-Jewry to ignore what is going on in Stamford Hill. Our joint aim, surely, should be not to let Corbynites divide us.

and Voat. In addition, the New Zealand massacres were actually “live-streamed”, meaning broadcast live on social media. A Facebook representative told me that the company had removed 1.5 million postings of the massacre, with millions more posted on other sites. The broadcast of mass murder is not only a desecration of the dead but a further threat to the living, as such outrages are used to recruit more extremists to hateful causes. The Wiesenthal Center demanded that Facebook and other companies, including Twitter and YouTube, change their policies to make it impossible for the next deadly
hate crime to be broadcast worldwide. The internet has created a reality where everything global is local and every local act is instantaneously global. This is understood by domestic extremists and international terrorist groups. We were impressed and reassured that Scotland Yard is aware of these new trends and is doing is best to track online bigots, antisemites and supporters of terrorism. But it is not enough. It is time for all of us to man the defences on this new battlefield. The Jewish world – starting with the family unit – can and must do more to monitor nefarious social media activity targeted at us. If you experience or are made aware by your children of threatening activity online, report it to the internet provider and to us at the Wiesenthal Center (information@wiesenthal.net). In addition, Jewish communities must create new alliances with other people of goodwill targeted by bigotry. By working together, we will be in a stronger position to demand the internet giants take stronger measures to degrade and defeat a growing online menace.

This sick death threat will not stop me speaking out MAAJID NAWAZ
FOUNDING CHAIRMAN, QUILLIAM
O
n Sunday, a hard drive of Labour Party emails and a confidential database revealed how the party has been interfering in, delaying or otherwise completely ignoring hundreds of internal complaints of antisemitism On the day this news broke, I dedicated an hour on my LBC show to debate the topic, declaring as I have done for months now that I believe the Labour Party to have descended into institutional antisemitism. This time though, something dark and twisted occurred. As the debate heated up, I was sent a horrific death threat via our LBC text messaging service, live on air. I caution readers that the threat is disturbing, graphic and cruel. Nevertheless, I will go on to reproduce it here, for reasons that I will go on to explain.
Before that, it is worth recapping the sheer scale of Labour’s abject failure in addressing the complaints of antisemitism raised. Astonishingly, members who were investigated for posting comments online such as “Heil Hitler”, “F*** the Jews” and “Jews are the problem” have not been expelled. The confidential spreadsheet revealed how 454 of 863 complaints remain unresolved, including 250 that remain totally untouched. Fewer than 30 members were expelled. As a result, Labour’s Jewish affiliate has passed an almost unanimous no-confidence motion in Corbyn. Natural then, for a political talk radio host to want to debate this scandal. Except that’s not how extremists work. They seek to silence instead of reflect, and they seek to instil fear instead of hope. With that, here is the violent message that was sent to me: “Maajid Nawaz, you are a Zionist jew! You filled us with great Anger! You are a Zionist Jewish superamacist (sic) and Zionist jewish terrorist and posing as a paki-
stani, you will be silenced! The swords are sharpened and the guns loaded, you interupt (sic) the truthful callers and call their truth misinformation, you are trained to misinform and confuse, you have Satanic attitude! You are deeply rotten! You will be smashed with a hammer on the head! you laugh like a hyena! You are a hyena!” I am a deep believer in sunlight being the best disinfectant. The reproduction of this message is necessary to place in full view the poisonous atmosphere our political culture has plummeted to. Only in this way, when repeated time after time, will those who remain in total denial wake up to the cesspit of views that float around the modern left, and pass as ‘support for Palestine’. Only by repeatedly exposing the antisemitism critics of Labour receive regularly will the tired old disingenuous trope that ‘criticising Israel is not anti-Semitic’ (as if anyone serious claims it is) give way to a more serious attempt at understanding the concerns our Jewish communities and others – for I am a
liberal Muslim, not a Jew – are raising. Antisemitic hate crimes have been rising year-on-year over the course of the past decade. As non-Jewish minorities like me are now facing similar treatment at the hands of these same antisemites, will others among the so-called progressive left finally recognise the monster they’ve unleashed? Let us not pretend that this sort of language does not deter and scare people, preventing free and fair speech, stifling thought and censoring democratic debate. This cowardly threat will not deter me from speaking up in defence of our minority communities across the board – just as I did last month when I was violently attacked with a weapon by a white racist in London. So let me make this absolutely clear: you, the sender(s) of this text, are a bunch of antisemitic cowards. We right minded Britons: Muslims, Jews and everyone else standing together, will defeat you. Just as this nation defeated the scourge of antisemitism the last time it reared its ugly head on our continent.

Jewish schools face a battle for survival BRIAN GORDON
CONSERVATIVE COUNCILLOR, BARNET
O
ur faith schools are undergoing an unprecedented crisis. Parliament is in the process of passing legislation compelling all schools to include Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) in the syllabus. Regulations are also in place to force all schools to teach about LGBT+ lifestyles. Teaching RSE , under the banner of “safeguarding”, may be a perceived antidote to the malaise within general society, saturated as it is by pornography, abuse and promiscuity. LGBT+ instruction may indeed follow today’s political preoccupation with equalities and political correctness. But they are inappropriate in a Torah-orientated environment. In our strictly-Orthodox schools it is unacceptable to be explicit about sexual relationships. It is also forbidden to teach same-gender lifestyles. These principles are absolute, non-negotiable red lines.
They apply, broadly speaking, to other major religions too, notably Catholicism and Islam. Legislating to impose such teachings on schools founded on those faiths is a curtailment of freedom. There is no desire within our community to deny children an appreciation of human relationships. Nevertheless, teaching the “facts of life” has no place in the Orthodox classroom. They are imparted sensitively in a technology- restricted environment by a combination of parental input , discussion among peers, and the subtle appreciation of Bible, Talmud and laws of modesty. The religious moral context excludes beyond question physical relationships before marriage. Many Orthodox marriages take place at a very early age – unlike secular society . The overwhelming majority are stable and productive. There is also no wish to discriminate against those choosing to live same-gender lifestyles – despite the same being forbidden in the Bible and , until quite recently, in civil law. Appreciation of tolerance and
abhorrence of prejudice can be effectively conveyed without the study or promotion of the lifestyles themselves. Yet these are the dictatorial requirements now being forced on faith schools, to be arbitrarily enforced by DfE civil servants and officious Ofsted inspectors. There are numerous politicians who strongly support faith schools, recognising their immense achievements, often well above secular schools. I know from my discussions with MPs and council colleagues how horrified many are on being informed how such schools are being hounded and threatened over RSE and LGBT+ . Politicians can only appreciate the scale of the problem when they are properly lobbied and apprised of the volume of public anger , and the fact that the majority of UK Jewish children – tens of thousands – now attend strictly-Orthodox schools. Unfortunately, our community has been decidedly weak in campaigning to protect our schools. The Board of Deputies and Partnerships for Jewish Schools cannot fulfil this task since there is virtually no Charedi representa-
tion within them and, to be fair, they cannot advocate passionately for things they do not believe in. The Values Foundation – an excellent inter-faith lobbying group working within Parliament – has been launched, with strictlyOrthodox rabbinical backing. But what it can achieve at this late stage is limited. By now a massive political campaign, possibly including peaceful protests, ought to have been launched. Sadly, this has not happened. That religion is a listed “protected characteristic” under the Equalities Act 2010 is a fact too frequently overlooked. In the opinion of senior legal experts, compelling faith schools to teach material contrary to their ethos is a violation of the Act and tantamount to antireligious discrimination. Whether a concerted legal challenge would succeed in the courts may still be an academic question. If faith schools are in due course severely penalised or even closed down for refusing to yield to these intolerant regulations, such action may become a necessity. Indeed, it could be a battle for survival. [N]

1BUS HELPS HOMELESS
Maidenhead Synagogue has converted a purple double-decker bus into a night shelter for rough sleepers in the local area. The bus, which was acquired by the synagogue, had the seating taken out and 12 beds installed upstairs, with a kitchen, desk and bathroom downstairs. It will drive to the town centre in the evenings to pick up rough sleepers for the night. Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain, pictured to the right of the door, said: “Many of the homeless are people who had jobs and homes until recently, but whose lives have now spiralled out of control and into the streets. The bus is part of the synagogue’s involvement in the wider community and represents our commitment to social action.”

Beresheet is a joint venture between the Israeli non-profit SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries, with the NIS 370-million (£79m) funded almost entirely by private donations from philanthropists. Israel is on track to join the United States, Russia (as the USSR), Japan, China, the European Space Agency and India in visiting the moon via probes, though only the US, Russia and China have scored successful landings. Other nations have seen their probes crash-land onto the surface.

SEDRA Metzora Hagodol
Torah For Today What does it say about... Madeleine McCann? BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS
BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN This week’s sedra, Metzorah, is full of technical laws of purity and impurity, mostly centred around the biblical disease of tzaraat, most commonly mistranslated as leprosy. It was clear to the sages of the Talmud that this was no normal disease, as evidenced by the fact the diagnosis was made by a Kohen and not a doctor. Rather, this disease is seen as a physical manifestation of a spiritual ailment that requires the afflicted individual to seek help urgently. The Talmud teaches us Tzaraat comes for several reasons, most notably the sin of lashon hara, speaking ill of others. The remarkable thing about lashon hara is it is forbidden to speak negatively about someone, even if the comment is 100 percent true! Slander (motzi shem ra) is a different sin altogether. Even if something is true, it is still lowly for us to choose to focus on another’s shortcomings. (There are, of course, times when it may be necessary and conditions must be met, but that’s beyond the scope of this short idea). In fact, the very word tzaraat, is related to the term ‘tzar ayin’, one who looks badly at others. However ‘life and death are in the hands of the tongue’, meaning words are incredibly powerful. The Hebrew word for ‘word’ is davar, which can also mean ‘thing’. A word is a thing! Although we don’t apply the technical laws of tzaraat nowadays, the message behind it is as relevant now as it ever was. In the era of social media, we are reminded to be extra careful with what we say and post! Rabbi Jonny Roodyn is education director of Jewish Edgware Flyer:Layout 1 3/4/19 13:58 Page 1 Futures Trust
On 3 May 2007, just short of her fourth birthday, Madeleine McCann (pictured) disappeared. Her distraught parents have never given up on finding their daughter, who would now be almost 16, but recent headlines suggest the search for Madeleine may soon come to an end as funds dry up. What does the Torah say in such situations? When a person is missing, but there is no evidence to suggest they are no longer alive, should the search for them continue? What advice would a rabbi give the parents in such a case? There is a principle in halacha that we do not abandon hope, even in the most desperate situation. For example, we do not tell a person that a situation is hopeless, even as we recite the confession on a death bed. Hope of a recovery is always there
❝
while a person is alive, and the parents of a missing toddler have that hope right up to the point of a body
THERE IS A PRINCIPLE IN HALACHA THAT WE DO NOT ABANDON HOPE
being discovered. The laws of marriage define a person as missing (for the purposes of mamzerut status) if there was no likelihood of their being found, and these are quite broadly defined not to cause hardship to women caught in such a situation. Had little Madeleine been lost in a plane crash or similar disaster, there might have been some rationale to say we should assume the worst. These days there is often the opportunity, through DNA tests, to discover the awful truth. In this case, however, we simply do not know and the fate of Madeleine remains a mystery. Rabbis suggest in such situations that we say psalms, the traditional balm of the heart and mind in situations of distress. Psalms 20, 121, 130 and 142 are the most appropriate, although we believe that saying any tehillim (psalms) helps, as there is always hope. Zvi Solomons is rabbi of JCoB.org, the Living Jewish Community in Reading

The Bible Says What? ‘God consumed Aaron’s sons with fire’ BY STUDENT RABBI DEBORAH BLAUSTEN In the book of Leviticus, Aaron’s sons are killed for bringing a “strange fire” before God. On the opening day of the tabernacle, after the first sacrifices have been brought, Nadav and Avihu bring a sacrificial offering of their own design, an offering that the Torah says they had “not been commanded to bring”. Commentators have sought to explain why, suggesting that perhaps because the incident is followed by the instruction to not enter the sanctuary when drunk, it was as a punishment for drunk and disrespectful behaviour. Most other commentaries focus on the act of bringing the strange fire. Samson Raphael Hirsch says: “Their sin was not consulting their father, ultimately making themselves the highest authority and disregarding the tradition of their elders”. Hirsch and others make the assumption that someone who does
something different or diverts from the received wisdom is doing it out of arrogance or disrespect. There is no reason to assume Nadav and Avihu acted with bad intentions, but the Torah and its interpreters suggest even well-meaning acts can be misread if you don’t help someone else understand what you are doing. When people bring ‘strange fire’ into communal spaces and suggest new ways of doing things, perhaps the story’s painful end is also cautionary. It reminds us we all have the potential to consume others’ enthusiasm or new ideas with the punishing weight of established norms. Nadav and Avihu’s story is about how we respond to new and different ideas and the potential catastrophic consequences of not giving people the benefit of the doubt. Deborah Blausten is a rabbinic student at Leo Baeck College
Progressively Speaking What social welfare lessons does the Passover story hold? BY RABBI AARON GOLDSTEIN The Passover story may be the same each year but, like a good joke, the magic lies in how and where you tell it. Most in Liberal Judaism enjoy a tradition over Passover, spending the first night at a family seder and the second at a communal one. This gives us the opportunity to be closer to family and friends, but also get to know those further from our general life experience. For me, this presents three key social welfare and justice opportunities. First, it brings together all the generations, sitting around the same table, as they tell and respond to the story of the Exodus from Egypt – a timely antidote to the referendum on the EU, and the fallout since, which has highlighted major differences in the outlook of our generations. The conversation sparked by the Haggadah can help us understand each other, whether that is grandchildren talking to their grandparents or cheder pupils chatting with
community elders. Recently-introduced items to the seder plate by the younger generation, such as oranges and Miriam’s Cup – which represent our key Liberal commitment to equality for all – are also conversation starters that can begin to break down generational barriers. Passover is also a time that asks us to consider the homeless. This is both those who are physically homeless – including refugees and people fleeing terror as our ancestors did in the Pesach story – but also those
without a family or trapped in an abusive home. There are also those who are spiritually homeless during Passover. Maybe they feel restricted by a form of Judaism where they can’t be who they want or love who they want, or maybe they just yearn for practices that fit with modern day life. We must help these people find a home within our Liberal community. Finally, Pesach is about freedom. While we have ours, there are many who do not. Those are the people we should fight for now. When I was a teenager, this meant protesting apartheid outside South Africa House on the third night. For my family today, including my teenage children, it has led to connections with Darfuri asylum seekers and thinking of modern-day slavery in this country. HOWARD GOLD BUILDING CONTRACTOR
HPSUK Dear Howard We were looking forward to works starting on our new bathroom. My builder took a £1,000 deposit before he started work to buy supplies. He messed us around for two weeks and then just left the job. The only work he has done is take tiles off the walls and rendered two walls. He has also taken broken tile rubbish and an old bath in his van. Now he is refusing to return any of our money. He has worked a total of six hours over a two-week period. He used to come in and leave after one hour, then disappear without informing us for days. He also turned up with no tools and no idea what he needed to do. He took taps off without checking if they were connected to the mains or a water
IAN GREEN IT SPECIALIST
MAN ON A BIKE
Dear Man on a Bike We’re moving offices and there are many things to organise. Can you give me the top five IT considerations for a business on the move? Zach Dear Zach Moving offices is one of the most stressful things a
business can go through. It is particularly difficult as most businesses will continue to operate throughout the move. Over the past 20-odd years, I’ve moved many businesses and they all need to consider the following: 1. Get the phone lines and internet sorted early. These can take weeks to set up . 2. Always get lots of cables in place. You’ll need network ports for every computer and every telephone, but you’ll also need them for printers, copiers, WiFi access points etc. It’s always easier and cheaper to put in cables at the beginning rather than having to add them later. 3. Remember that every desk or work station will need many plug sockets, for computers, printers, desk fans and phones.
tank. My question is how much work you would say he has done and how much is that work worth. We are starting the small claims procedure. Joanne
*On most models and fittings
www.bloomhearing.co.uk
Dear Joanne I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience. People like that give decent plumbers and bathroom fitters a bad name. Did you have anything in writing, for example a timescale or an order in which the work will be done, when payment will be given? Legally you certainly have a claim against him. Even if you had no written contract, bad workmanship is bad workmanship. I would start by contacting the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, who will advise you of your rights and the next steps to take. They may refer your case to trading standards, which could investigate the case on your behalf. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience and wish you the best of luck with your claim.
Think about where every desk will be, or might be if you expand. 4. Have a dedicated IT area. You’ll probably not need a server, but there will need to be routers, possibly a back-up drive and wireless controllers. This area will need the internet connection and plenty of power. Any phone system will be located there too. The space will need to have ventilation to keep it from overheating. 5. Plan the moving day well. Ensure all data is backed up and you have printed out any confirmations and contracts since these important details may be harder to locate. With careful planning, an office move can be smooth and trouble-free. Just remember to unpack the mugs and tea first.
JONATHAN WILLIAMS JEWELLER
JEWELLERY CAVE Dear Jonathan I’m alarmed by the amount of break-ins I keep hearing about. I have some very nice diamonds, jewellery and watches, which I have accumulated over the past 50 years, and these items would be irreplaceable if I were burgled. What I can do to safeguard against this? Betty
Dear Betty Are you adequately insured if the above was to happen to you? So many people are either uninsured or under insured. I suggest you bring in all your items and we can give you current replacement costs of every item you have. We will take a photograph of each item so everyone is aware of what you own. This eliminates all confusion in the eventuality of trying to describe each item. All our valuations are endorsed by the British Jewellers Association and we can recommend you to jewellery insurers. Secondly, if you have a safe, is it adequately secured to the ground, by either bolts or even securely cemented to
the ground, or both? We have heard of hardened criminals walking out the house with the safe! Thirdly, do you have home CCTV? There are many systems available that are inexpensive and worth every penny, especially if one can catch the criminal on CCTV. Make sure your home alarm is fully serviced, and in full working order, and if you can, upgrade to a red care service. This enables an automatic response to the police and your alarm company, and if you are out of your home, you’ll be called on your mobile immediately. It is also worth checking with your insurers where you are covered to wear your valuables.
