Gaza Strip documentary accused of whitewashing Palestinian antisemitism

The BBC has defended translating the Arabic word for Jew ‘Yahudi’ as ‘Israeli’ in a documentary on Gaza this week, amid criticism it was “playing down” antisemitism, writes Mathilde Frot. The film, One Day in Gaza, which focused on last year’s deadly mass protests against the opening of a new US embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, aired on Monday on BBC Two. Among the Palestinian protesters interviewed, 24-year-old Bader Saleh said in Arabic: “I’m not one for fighting or burning tyres, but when I went I was convinced by it. The revolutionary songs, they excite

you, they encourage you to rip a Jew’s head off.” But the English translation of Saleh’s remarks offered by the BBC refers to an “Israeli”, not “Jew”. This was just one of at least FIVE instances of the Arabic word for “Jew” (Yahud) being mistranslated to “Israeli” in the subtitles. Following backlash, a BBC spokesperson said: “We sought expert advice on the translation before broadcast and we believe the translation of ‘Yahudi’ as ‘Israeli’ in this documentary is both accurate and true to the speakers’ intentions.” Among those to criticise the translation,

Board of Deputies senior vice president Sheila Gewolb said: “The anti-Jewish racism in the phrase ‘rip a Jew’s head off ’ is there for all to see. The BBC should explain why viewers were given a subtitle in which the word ‘Jew’ was substituted for ‘Israeli’. Does the BBC believe its job is to protect the perpetrators from their own racism?” Labour MP for Ilford North Wes Streeting tweeted his concern, writing: “Totally unacceptable – not that the word Israeli makes the statement any better.” Historian Deborah Lipstadt said: “This is another example of the failure to take antisemitism seriously.”

Bader Saleh said ‘Jew’ but his quote was captioned ‘Israeli’

IRELAND BAN FOR REVISIONIST PASTOR Ireland has barred entry to a US pastor who has been labelled a Holocaust revisionist by Jewish groups. Christian fundamentalist Steven Anderson, accused of advocating the “extermination” of LGBT+ people, was due to preach in Dublin next week, but Irish ministers invoked a seldomused law to ban him from the country. The Anti-Defamation League said a 2015 video titled Marching to Zion shows Anderson arguing millions of Jews were not gassed and burned, but died of hunger and disease.

PAJES’ CONCERNS OVER FRAMEWORK The representative body for Jewish educators has expressed concern that guidelines on Ofsted inspections remain “subjective”. Partnerships for Jewish Schools was reacting to the government’s Ofsted Inspection Framework, published this week, which sets out expectations on the part of those inspecting and those being inspected. It said it “welcomed” the shift “to look at the broader educational outcomes of our schools,” but added “despite some reassurances we still have some concerns about the subjectivity of this judgement”.

Chief: We must get creative to entice millennials to shul

MINISTER URGED TO RECOGNISE PALESTINE

Orthodoxy has to adapt to how millennials interact with their Judaism to bring them back into the fold, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis warned senior European rabbis this week. However, Mirvis stressed that did not mean changing or reforming Orthodoxy, but looking at how to bring them back. Mirvis was addressing the 31st Convention of the Conference of European Rabbis in Antwerp, Belgium, where the main theme was “Torah and Tradition in the Face of Contemporary Challenges”. “With regard to synagogue services,” the Chief Rabbi said, “there is a greater desire among millennials to participate in energetic and inspiring services as opposed to attending a performance given by the chazan or cantor in shul.” Millennials, Mirvis said, are more autonomous. “We are seeing, for example, a weakening of loyalty to ‘the establishment’ and those regarded as being in positions of authority. We are seeing the thinning out of the middle ground,” he added. “Fewer people are coming to shul unless they are observant and we should be concerned about that.” Mirvis said there was a need to instil a feeling of community for people who

no longer looked at the old ways with fondness. “We need strong communities,” Mirvis said, “A place where if you’re not there on Shabbat, people will notice. A place where you are appreciated and valued, where young people can find meaning and joy.” He noted that nowadays, with what he termed the “shtiebelisation” of the community – “where younger people prefer a smaller minyan so that they can benefit

from a more close-knit atmosphere.” • Speaking to the Israeli network Arutz Sheva in Antwerp, Mirvis discussed rising antisemitism and the rate of aliyah from Britain to Israel. “We’ve noticed in the last three years, aliyah to Israel has dropped slightly so there is no expression in reality of any deep concerns,” he said. “I hope that it won’t be put to the test in the event of a Labour government.”

NEWS IN BRIEF

The new Middle East minister this week faced Labour demands to recognise the state of Palestine, amid concerns over the actions of Israel’s prime minister. Andrew Murrison stuck to the UK government’s approach of committing to the two-state solution, adding that a Palestinian state is expected to be recognised “when the time is right”. Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry pressed him over the issue on his first outing in the Commons since succeeding Alistair Burt, who quit in March over Brexit.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry has said she believes Jerusalem should be run by an international body. “It should be an international capital and should be run by an international body,” she said on Tuesday. “Donald Trump recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was wrong, and undermines international convention,” she added. She cited Palestinian claims to “part of Jerusalem for their state”, but did not acknowledge Israeli claims.

Huge Labour leak due Reports suggest the Labour Party is about to be hit by the largest communications leak since the MPs expenses scandal, with more than 100,000 emails and WhatsApp messages showing how it dealt with antisemitism cases. According to (non-satirical) reports in this week’s Private Eye, disgruntled former party officials took copies of tens of thousands of messages before leaving, and are preparing to share this data dump with the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). Many ex-Labour staffers signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), meaning they cannot legally talk about alleged efforts to cover-up antisemitism in the party or shield leader Jeremy Corbyn. However, while the EHRC is still in the first stages of investigating complaints that the party is institutionally antisemitic, it could yet make its investigation statutory, which would give it the legal power to override the NDAs. Labour’s critics have long argued Corbyn’s

team intervened in the antisemitism crisis, which has caused several MPs to leave the party and hundreds of Jewish supporters to resign their memberships. A Labour spokesman said: “The EHRC has not announced a formal investigation. We completely reject any suggestion the party has acted unlawfully and we are cooperating fully with the EHRC.”

DETENTION DEATH INQUEST OPENS An inquest into the death of a Moroccan Jew who died in mysterious circumstances at a detention centre near Heathrow began on Tuesday. Amir Siman-Tov, who converted to Judaism before travelling to the UK, died at Colnbrook detention centre on 17 February 2016. The UK government has so far refused to explain how Siman-Tov – whose wife was pregnant at the time – died

despite being on 24-hour suicide watch. A fellow detainee said Siman-Tov had been “denied everything all night” by medical and supervisory staff at Colnbrook, an outsourced highsecurity centre similar to a modern prison where inmates can be held without limit. Adel Kader, 50, from Lebanon, met Siman-Tov at the centre and said: “He was put into healthcare as soon as he

arrived… He had a nurse with him all the time. He was on suicide watch.” Kader said the Jewish migrant was “a quiet and intelligent person” and “a very gentle man”, adding: “When he came in last month he was fit.” Jewish human rights group René Cassin has been campaigning against indefinite detention, saying Siman-Tov’s death showed how it was a “lethal policy”.

London march / Airbnb petition / News NEWS IN BRIEF LABOUR DIRECTOR RESIGNS FROM PARTY A former Labour Party regional director and aide to Luciana Berger MP has resigned her membership, accusing members of her local constituency of bullying. Sheila Murphy, a Wirral councillor and Labour member for 49 years, was an ex-director for Labour north-west and worked on Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper’s leadership campaigns. Her decision to leave follows her backing for the unsuccessful Labour candidate in Wirral, Philip Brightmore, in this month’s local elections. Last year she said: “We have a new hard core whose behaviour is nasty, vicious, and controlling.”

Demo is told Jewish groups ‘are in gutter’ About 2,000 pro-Palestine protesters marched in London on Saturday, with one participant saying Jewish organisations are “in the gutter” and “part of the problem”. The ‘National Demonstration for Palestine: Exist! Resist! Return!’ march – attended by several Labour MPs, including Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon – had placards with “Israel provokes antisemitism”. Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott read out a message of support from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Glyn Secker, secretary of the AntiZionist Jewish Voice for Labour, told demonstrators the 119 Labour MPs who were “friends of Israel” are a “fifth column in the Labour

was “embracing the neo-Nazi English Defence League”, Secker told the crowd: “What on earth are Jews doing in the gutter with these rats?”

MPS URGE WEST BANK LISTING BAN Five Labour MPs have urged Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to push for a ban on Airbnb rental listings in the West Bank. MPs Holly Lynch, Julie Elliott, Chris Elmore, Lilian Greenwood and Graham Jones signed a letter urging Hunt to intervene. This follows a decision by the holiday accommodation firm to reverse its decision to ban listings following legal action brought against it by hosts and guests. “Given the UK’s commitment to a two-state solution, we are calling on the government to support Airbnb and to insist that destinations in illegal settlements be removed from their listings,” the letter says. It also condemns what it perceives to be “the bullying tactics used to manoeuvre Airbnb into u-turning on its position and the secrecy demanded by such an arrangement”. Labour MP Wes Streeting shared the letter on social media, writing: “Strongly support this.” Airbnb announced it would take no profits from listings in the West Bank.

...but Jones says comment ‘not racist’ Guardian columnist Owen Jones has defended a leading member of Jewish Voice for Labour against allegations of antisemitism. Glyn Secker, secretary of the pro-Corbyn fringe group, told proPalestine protesters last weekend

Labour MPs friendly with Israel are a “fifth column”. He also claimed the Zionist Federation was “embracing” the “neo-Nazi” English Defence League, adding: “What are Jews doing in the gutter with these rats?” Jones condemned the remarks,

Special Investigation / Corbyn’s agenda

Corbyn’s anti-Israel obsession in numbers The Equalities and Human Rights Commission is set to launch an inquiry into antisemitism in the Labour Party, with the Jewish community largely blaming the party’s leader and his decades of singling out Israel for ceaseless condemnation. Here, political analyst Jodie Cohen takes a forensic look at Jeremy Corbyn’s relentless animosity towards Israel in Parliament The Parliament diaries

On the UK Parliament website users can look up every Early Day Motion (EDM) tabled by MPs since the 1989/90 Parliament. EDMs are motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons for which no day has been fixed. They are often used to put on record the views of individual MPs, and can attract a great deal of public interest and media coverage. MPs can sponsor their own EDM or sign other people’s. This investigation looks only at the EDMs Jeremy Corbyn has sponsored, as they are a clearer indication of his most strongly-held views. Since Parliament.uk records began, Corbyn has sponsored 834 EDMs covering 200 subjects, including 67 countries. Yet one subject and one country stands out...

Israel, Israel, Israel…

Of the 834 EDMs sponsored by Jeremy Corbyn, 64 motions are critical of Israel or demonstrate one-sided support for the Palestinians. He appears to have sponsored such an EDM virtually every year over a 22-year period, no matter what party leads the Israeli government. The Labour leader’s EDMs on Israel appear to have started in 1993 – the year Israel signed the Oslo Accords with the Palestinians. They continued until he became Leader Of The Opposition in September 2015. His record shows he has been more critical of Israel than any other country or single issue.

Corbyn’s most frequent Early Day Motions:

proliferation, one of the subjects for which he is best known. Some 18 of these specifically refer to Trident, Britain’s nuclear programme. He has referenced his constituency of Islington 43 times during the same period – that’s almost 49 percent more EDMs on Israel than on his own constituency. He is more interested in criticising the Middle East’s only democracy than representing the people he was elected to speak for. The Labour leader has tabled 23 EDMs related to trade unions, labour relations and workers’ rights. He sponsored 18 regarding the transport sector and workers within that sector. He proposed a further 17 on education, education covering teachers’ pay,

1 – Israel (64) 2 – Anti-nuclear (55) 3 – Islington (43) 4 – Morocco (26) 5 – Chile (25) 6 – Ireland, Trade Unions and Labour relations and workers’ rights (23 each) 9 – Transport, and Turkey (18 each) 11 – Iraq, criticising the war there and supporting human and Kurdish rights, Bahrain, and Education (17 each) 14 – Refugees / asylum seekers (15) 15 – Tributes to people passing away that don’t fit under specific categories (14)

Corbyn’s overall EDMs

To put the 64 EDMs on Israel and the Palestinians into perspective, Corbyn has tabled 55 EDMs calling for nuclear non-

An appetite for foreign policy

MPs are allowed, of course, to take an interest in non-constituency and non-UK matters, and Jeremy Corbyn is clearly interested in foreign affairs. For example, he has tabled 26 on Morocco (often citing strong support for Western Saharan independence). He has sponsored 25 motions on Chile (criticising Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and supporting human rights and democracy). And he has proposed 23 EDMs related to the troubles in Ireland in the second half of the 20th century. However, his EDMs on Israel and the Palestinians clearly surpass the number of EDMs he has tabled on Morocco and Chile put together, and are not far behind his EDMs on Morocco, Chile and Ireland combined.

Take a deeper dive...

There have been times when Corbyn is so concerned about a subject that he tables more than one EDM in a row on the same topic. What’s his record? You’ve guessed it…In 2004, he tabled four consecutively on Israel and the Palestinians. Some might argue that the other 649 MPs in the House of Commons might be just as concerned about Israel. So I examined all EDMs on Israel since Parliament. uk’s records began. There are 442 on Israel in total, including motions that are both positive and negative. The Labour leader has sponsored almost 1/7 of these, only one of which could be deemed to be positive (it praises an Israeli peace coalition ‘Gush Shalom’). He sponsored only two referencing Syria, both in 2013. One welcomed the UK ruling out military action, and one called for the Middle East to be a weapons of mass destruction free zone. There have been zero on Yazidi persecution, and zero referring at all to Islamic State by any of its names. What about the troubles in Venezuela in recent years?

What would a Jeremy Corbyn premiership look like for Israel?

Analysing his EDMs provides insights on what we might expect to see with regards to Israel, should Corbyn become prime minister. In 2002 he was the primary sponsor of an EDM calling to end arms exports to Israel. That became Labour policy at last year’s party conference (remember the sea of Palestinian flags?) In 2011 his EDM on the status of Jerusalem called on Israel to respect freedom of worship for all faiths in the city, which many would argue shows a lack of understanding of facts on the ground. Corbyn denies supporting a blanket boycott of Israel, saying he believes in boycotting settlement produce only. However, our investigation has revealed that in 2002 he sponsored an EDM entitled ‘National Petition for Palestine’. The motion says the British government should call on Israel to withdraw its army from the Occupied Territories, dismantle the settlements there, and accept that the Palestinians have an equal right to Jerusalem, whether it be the capital of their separate state (East Jerusalem) or that of a single democratic secular state. It states Britain should make a public commitment to supporting UN resolution 194 calling on Israel to “grant the refugees, the Palestinians displaced by them, the right to return to Israel or a right to compensation if they choose not to return”. Finally, it states that Britain should impose trade sanctions on Israel, including an arms embargo, until the above demands are met. A core demand of today’s boycott, divestment and sanctions

(BDS) campaign against Israel is the Palestinian refugees’ ‘right of return’ to Israel. In the words of former US President Barack Obama, this “would extinguish Israel as a Jewish state”. Corbyn’s supporters take pride in the fact that he is a man of principle. He sticks to his guns and is proud of his unwavering positions on policy. This is part of his appeal. So it could be argued that his EDM calling for a full boycott of Israel is an indication of the direction a Corbyn-led government would take.

dling of Brexit, European elections will give us the next indication of which way voters are headed. Whether or not Jeremy Corbyn becomes the next prime minister of the United Kingdom, one thing is clear. Corbyn’s record of sponsoring EDMs over the past two decades and more indicates that for him, as recently suggested by former deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, it really is “all about Israel”. A dictionary definition of ‘obsession’ is ‘an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind.’ This analysis suggests that Corbyn has an obsession with Israel on an absolute basis, but also on a comparative basis – comparative over time, with other MPs, and with other issues. It’s a negative obsession, with only one out of 64 highlighting positive dialogue.

Recent polls have indicated that a Prime Minister Corbyn is becoming increasingly likely. Despite the local government elections held last week delivering a rebuke to both the main political parties, a YouGov poll for The Times on 23/24 April suggested a Labour lead over the Conservatives of three percent, with Labour achieving 30 percent of the vote. In fact, 13 polls all taken in April 2019 suggest a Labour win at the next General Election. With Theresa May under fire for her han-

Morris

Corbyn’s top 20 foreign EDMs:

He has sponsored no EDMs on the country since 2013, when he offered condolences to its people after the passing of President Hugo Chavez. And what about those bastions of human rights, Russia and China? He has sponsored two (on Chechnya) and five (on Taiwan, Tibet and human rights) respectively. On Iran, two express concern at the prospect of war. The others either express support for the rights of Iranian workers or for the Kurdish people in Iran. None condemn Iran’s repeated calls to wipe Israel off the map. Any condemnation of Hamas, Islamic Jihad or Hezbollah? None. So it looks as though Corbyn is more concerned with Israel – which has been seeking peace with the Palestinians for decades – than with questionable regimes and key conflicts, in which well over one million people have perished. One might assume the reason Corbyn hasn’t tabled any on some of the above subjects recently is because he hasn’t tabled any at all since becoming leader – as is the custom for ministers upon their appointment in the top job. However, a search of EDMs since September 2015 shows he has sponsored 54 motions during this time. It’s also interesting to consider why Corbyn hasn’t posted any on Israel since becoming leader. One could presume it’s because, shortly afterwards, Labour became embroiled in questions over its attitude towards antisemitism and Zionism.

funding and schools and colleges in his constituency. Corbyn’s EDMs on Israel are more than his EDMs on these three subjects – all of which he is passionate about – combined.

The key question: why?

So, why has the Labour leader been so utterly obsessed with Israel when other arguably far more pressing issues and topics get a free pass? That’s a question only he can answer. Until he does, people will remain deeply troubled about his true motivation.

News / Jack and Rudi tributes / Charity ride

‘Mr Stanmore’ mourned Tributes were paid this week to war veteran Jack Lewis who has died at the age of 98, following a chest infection. Jack, who was honorary life president of Stanmore and Canons Park Shul, was known locally as “Mr Stanmore” owing to his work in the community. “His main aim was to teach young people about the horrors of the Holocaust and also of war,” said his son-inlaw Jonathan Kober, 68. “He’s also a hero for the Stanmore community as well as for the borough of Harrow with regards to remembrance. “He will be remembered as a giant of a man who was always meticulous in everything he did. He loved doing work for the community in any way he could.”

Harrow East MP Bob Blackman told Jewish News: “Jack was a truly unique man and it was an honour to have known him. His contribution to Stanmore and beyond is immeasurable; he leaves a great legacy.” Jack joined the royal army medical corps in 1938, serving in India and West Africa, and was promoted to the role of sergeant major. After the war, Jack opened an accounting practice in the West End, later moving to Edgware and also served the Association of Jewish Ex Servicemen and Women (AJEX as national chairman and later as vice president. As part of his work on remembrance, Jack organised a trip to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp attended by survivor

£16K RAISED IN DAVID’S MEMORY Family and friends of former JFS pupil David Minn, who died while trekking in Argentina last year, have raised more than £16,000 from a charity bike ride in his memory. The aerospace engineer from Borehamwood, who graduated from the University of Sheffield, was declared missing after he failed to return to his hotel in January 2018. The 35-mile ride through Hertfordshire last Sunday started and finished at

Haberdashers’ Aske’s School in Elstree, with cyclists passing through several towns on the way. The family raised £16,781.21 – smashing their £15,000 target – which will be donated to charity The Eve Appeal, which is conducting critical research on all five gynaecological cancers. “My family are so overwhelmed with how generous you’ve all been and we’ve smashed the £15,000 target,” David’s sister Hayley wrote on social media.

BERGEN-BELSEN SURVIVOR DIES Holocaust educators have paid tribute to Bergen-Belsen survivor Rudi Oppenheimer (pictured) for “playing a key role” in bearing witness to the past after his death was announced on Tuesday. Berlin-born Rudi was aged nine and living in the Netherlands in 1940 when the Nazis invaded. In 1943, his family was sent to the Westerbork transit camp, where they remained until 1944. As his sister Eve had been born in the UK, the family was classified as ‘Exchange’ Jews and, when they were deported to Bergen-Belsen, their status gave them certain privileges. However, condi-

tions deteriorated rapidly at the camp and, in January 1945, Rudi’s mother fell ill and died. His father died two months later. In April, Rudi and his brother left on the last train and were reunited with Eve. In later life, Rudi dedicated much of his time to Holocaust education, and met The Queen at the camp during her visit in 2015. He also spoke to thousands of schoolchildren at the same time during an innovative online session. “As Rudi spoke, it was clear he had captivated the virtual audience,” tweeted Alex Maws, head of educational grants at the Association of Jewish Refugees and UK delegate at the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock said he “dedicated the latter part of his life to ensuring that young people understood the trauma of his childhood under Nazi-occupied Europe”.

Baroness Ruth Deech said the country was “the most egregious offender” when it came to returning Nazi-looted art, as peers debated a Bill to extend the ability of UK museums to return artworks to the descendants of their former owners. “The Terezin declaration, to which the UK is a party, called on those countries that have not yet made restitution to do so along the lines of the declaration,” she said. “The most egregious offender is Poland, squatting on the property of three million victims of the Nazis, the only country in modern Europe to refuse to set up a scheme for compensation.” She said this “presented yet another example of Poland’s cavalier attitude to the rule of law and European obligations,” adding: “The European Parliament, US Congress and British parliamentarians have urged Poland to do justice – so far to no avail.” Deech said restitution was “symbolically important,” because it “sends a mes-

sage to this war-torn world that, if the enemy despoiler does his worst, nevertheless, in the end, that wrong will be righted”. The Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets in 1998 agreed the need to identify art looted by the Nazis in public museums and galleries around the world, and to establish dispute resolution mechanisms for claims. Lord Younger said “very little looted art found its way to the UK during and after the war, unlike mainland Europe, where many hundreds of works of art have been returned to claimants over the years”. Lord Pickles, the UK’s special envoy for post-Holocaust issues, said: “It is shocking that, even today, thousands of injustices remain uncorrected.” [N]

Jewish News meets... UK’s new ambassador to Israel

‘I’ve got my dream job’

Britain is Israel’s ‘natural partner’, new envoy Neil Wigan tells Jenni Frazer

Britain’s new ambassador to Israel, Neil Wigan, can barely contain his excitement at the prospect of returning to Tel Aviv, where he served at the embassy’s political attaché between 2002 and 2006. “I had a fantastic time the first time I was there, and I always wanted to go back,” says the ambassador. A fantastic time is an understatement: he met his Israeli wife, Yael Banaji, while serving in Tel Aviv, and the couple, who now have two sons, are really looking forward to their posting. It’s the third ambassadorship for the 48-year-old diplomat – he was British ambassador to the Congo from 2010 to 2013, and then ambassador in Somalia from 2013 until 2015. The Somalia and Israel postings “couldn’t be more different”, smiles Wigan. In Somalia, he spent most of his time in the capital, Mogadishu, working in conditions of heavy security. He does not expect life to be like that in Israel, which he most recently visited in April and was there during the latest elections. “I haven’t planned most of my Foreign Office career, but this is a job I’ve always wanted to do,” he says, acknowledging there are big changes between today’s embassy and the one in which he served 17 years ago. “I was there during the second intifada, and the disengagement from Gaza. The embassy was very focused on the peace process and the conflict. Now the embassy’s work is much

wider and broader than that. We do a lot of work on British and Israeli collaboration between universities, on hitech collaboration… the commercial agenda is much more important. “We’ve got a much closer security relationship, and we do a lot more with Israel in the region than we used to. The job has become more interesting, more modern and more sophisticated.” He is rueful about his grasp of Hebrew, although he has a lot of help from his wife and his teacher. “I am grateful to Netflix for improving my Hebrew,” he laughs, confiding that although he currently watches the thriller series Fauda with subtitles, his ambition is to be able to conduct an entire interview in Hebrew (“preferably on the radio, where it doesn’t

matter if I make faces when I make a mistake”) before the end of his tenure in Tel Aviv. Ambassador Wigan’s “guilty pleasure”, incidentally, is the so-bad-it’s-good Israeli comedy Hashoter Hatov, or The Good Cop. As far as Wigan is concerned, Israeli companies don’t seem to be waiting for the Brexit shoe to drop in terms of their relationship with Britain. “Trade went up by 15 percent last year, $10 billion [£7.7bn] in bilateral trade for the first time ever, and there are more Israeli companies investing in Britain since [2016] referendum than before it. “I’ve been round British banks and other companies that are really interested in working with Israeli start-ups. And there are big Israeli companies, such as Elbit, which are looking to strengthen their presence in the UK.

Every year, legacies to Magen David Adom are directly responsible for saving the lives of thousands of people in Israel. People like Ilan who was hit by a car outside of his school in Kfar Saba. at the moment,” he says, although he also wouldn’t rule it out. It is unlikely, however, without serious progress in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, “which is endorsed by the international community – but we’re not in that place at the moment”. He thinks Britain, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, still has a voice in the region. Meanwhile, aside from his assiduous language lessons, the incoming ambassador is eagerly compiling a register of what he is most looking forward to. “The weather, the food, and travelling around the country,” he lists. I’m planning to eat my way through the top 50 restaurants – the food is just phenomenal, even better than when I was there before – and then I want to go to the national parks and the antiquities.” It is, he says, his dream job.

YOUR LIFE. SAVING MY LIFE.

So actually Brexit does not seem to be making much of a difference.” He is not yet ready to say that he has “a bright idea” that he wants to implement, preferring instead to get to Israel and see how things are working. But he is keen to “embed” and improve on the projects initiated by his predecessors, David Quarrey and Matthew Gould, believing there is “even more potential” in technical co-operation. He believes, he says, that “Britain is a natural partner” with Israel, and will probably focus on getting Israelis to look at working with Britain rather than the US. But he diplomatically sidesteps when asked about following in American footsteps and moving his country’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “We don’t have any plans to move

Jewish candidates in step with Farage

Party leader Nigel Farage, formerly of UKIP. Below: Lance Foreman and Simon Marcus

Lance Forman and Simon Marcus are among the Jewish candidates representing the Brexit Party in next week’s European elections, writes Mathilde Frot. Lance Forman, 56, the owner of salmon curing company H Forman & Son, was a Conservative supporter before he joined the Brexit Party. But he was inspired to jump ship after the prime minister invited Jeremy Corbyn for crossparty Brexit talks. “It was when Theresa May invited Corbyn into No 10 Downing Street to discuss the future of Europe and I find that such a stomach churning experience,” he told Jewish News. “Corbyn’s allowed antisemitism to fester, not only in the Labour Party but also in the UK. People feel empowered and it’s because of Jeremy Corbyn.” Forman discussed what he sees as the economic benefits of leaving the EU and said his salmon curing business exports mostly to the US and Hong Kong. “My American customers pay tax on our products. Business isn’t always about price. It’s about culture, too.” Forman also expressed concern about the rise of antisemitism and said he cancelled a press conference in Peterborough on Thursday, after he discovered a 30ft swastika sprayed on his business headquarters. But when challenged about accusations of antisemitism against party leader Nigel Farage, he said he would not be a member of the party if he suspected the claims to be true. “I am not the dumb Jewish idiot. I would like to think I am at least more intelligent than that,” he said. “As a Jewish person, I am quite Orthodox, and my father was a Holocaust survivor. I have a very sensitive antenna. I have never sensed that with Farage, while with Corbyn, I sense it extraordinarily strongly.” But The Guardian revealed last week that Farage appeared on US talk show Infowars and referred to “globalists” and a “new world order.” When challenged about the talk show appearances, Forman said: “Just because you go on a programme does not mean you agree with their

views at all. When people talk about globalists, this has nothing to do with antisemitism,” he said. “This is about big multinational companies taking over the world. I agree there’s a problem with globalists. The problem is with bureaucrats in the EU.” On Farage’s ties to the German anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Forman said he wanted “nothing to do” with them and did not share their views. He added: “I listened to a speech by Alice Weidel, the leader of the AfD about how Germany should support Britain in Brexit. You can’t listen to that speech and not feel impressed by it but that does not mean you agree [with everything they say.]” Candidate Simon Marcus, 46, was also a Conservative hopeful before he joined the Brexit Party. He stood for the Conservatives in London’s Hampstead and Kilburn constituency in the 2015 general election and in Barking in 2010, but joined the Brexit Party over the government’s handling of Brexit. “Like so many people, I was appalled by the way Brexit has been dealt with,” he said. Marcus, who co-founded charity London Boxing Academy, said he seeks to campaign for Brexit from Brussels. “We want to send a message to an out-of-touch Westminster elite who are doing their best to undermine the will of the people,” he said. He also dismissed concerns about allegations of antisemitism against Farage and added neither he nor Farage espouse anti-migrant rhetoric.

THIS WEEK

IN 1945

The Boys, then and now Four generations of Holocaust survivors this week recreated an iconic photograph taken in Prague in August 1945, writes Adam Decker. Six of ‘The Boys’, alongside 250 of their relatives and descendants, gathered on Sunday morning in front of the iconic Jan Hus memorial in Old Town Square. One of ‘The Boys’, Sir Ben Helfgott, 89, described feeling “overwhelmed with emotion” as the picture was taken, while also in the photo was celebrity TV Judge Robert Rinder, whose maternal grandfather was another in the group. Helfgott’s younger sister, Mala Tribich, who

joined him for the photograph, said: “I was feeling sad thinking about all the survivors we have lost and what it would have meant for them to experience the reunion. “But I also feel positive and upbeat,” she added. “Today represented survival: the survival of the next generation and all the generations that have come since.” Following the Second World War, 732 surviving children were flown from Prague to the Lake District by the RAF to start new lives. They became known as ‘The Boys’, later forming the ’45 Aid Society to raise money for survivors and

teach the lessons of the Holocaust. James Gordon, 19, whose grandfather Monty Graham was just 15 in August 1945, said: “Sadly, we are probably the last generation who will meet these Holocaust survivors and so it falls onto our shoulders to carry on their stories. We are stood here today to secure their legacy.” His mother, Helen, said: “I’ve studied that iconic photo from 1945 ever since I was a child – it’s something I’ve grown up with as part of my heritage. It’s so special to be here and I hope we can spread these stories to ensure the atrocities of the Holocaust

are never repeated.” As well as recreating the iconic photograph, the group experienced a collective Friday night dinner in the Jewish Quarter and visited the Theresienstadt Ghetto, where they took part in a memorial service. Last week, Home Secretary Sajid Javid addressed the ’45 Aid Society’s annual reunion dinner and recalled bringing his family to hear the story of one of ‘The Boys’, Harry Spiro. The 16 survivors in attendance were also reunited with serviceman Norman Shepherd, who flew many of them to Britain in an RAF Sterling bomber.

Special Report / Orthodox addicts

Addiction film is up for top award

A

young Jewish man with a head torch takes part of a set of tefillin — and shows the viewer how their drug addict owners routinely open up the black leather boxes to conceal heroin, writes Jenni Frazer. That’s just one extraordinary scene out of 100 hours of footage made by the Israeli film-maker, Anna Oliker, whose own story is almost as remarkable as the subject of her film, AZ House. In June, Anna will leave Jerusalem for Sheffield, where she is one of five finalists, all women, vying for this year’s Whickers Film and TV Funding Award. Each finalist will make a live pitch to the judges and the winner will receive £80,000 towards the completion of their film. The competition is named after the celebrated documentary film-maker, Alan Whicker, who died in 2013. Anna’s is not the typical background for a film-maker. She was born in Russia, lived in New Jersey, and emigrated to Israel, where 30 years ago she became observant. She and her husband have five children, now ranging in age from 12 to 21, and as a “late developer”, she entered film school – a religious film school, where originally she studied screenwriting.

But when she began tangling with the school system over issues relating to her own children, she came across a shocking fact of Israeli life – the growing number of young people addicted to drugs and drink, and their prevalence within the strictly Orthodox community. “I discovered that the schools are just kicking these kids out, and they find themselves on the streets. And the streets are waiting,” she said. Her inquiries led her to an unassuming house in Pisgat Ze’ev, a Jerusalem suburb, where Eric, himself a former drug addict, runs a “tough love” recovery programme for young men, many of whom come from religious families in America – and the UK. “The AZ House is mainly for English speakers and takes between 15 and 19 men at a time,” says Anna. Many of the residents come from enormous families where addiction is widespread – “we had one 18-year-old

Drug addiction is highly prevalent in Israel’s ultra-Orthodox community

from a family of 13, where eight of the siblings were addicts”. In some cases, the men have simply been thrown out by their families, no longer able to deal with the shame – and the expense of repeatedly failed rehab – brought by the addicts. Eric himself is from a Reform background in Cleveland, Ohio, and is somewhat bemused at his new role as “den father” to a group from deeply religious backgrounds, although he runs AZ House as kosher and Shabbat-observant. To date, 55 men have taken part in Eric’s eight-month programme: five of them have dropped out and died from drug overdoses.

“But Eric doesn’t give up on anyone,” says Anna, though he gets no funding from the Israeli state and every month is a struggle to pay the rent and utility bills. He managed to get clean in America and set up AZ House in Israel nearly three years ago, funding it with his savings. For Anna, being shortlisted for the Whickers is “a real honour, and shows the open-mindedness and possibilities”. Winning would enable her to complete the film and edit it down to a manageable documentary 55 minutes, with the hope that it can be shown at festivals. But she is also invested emotionally in AZ House – and is doing what she can to shed light on this hitherto secret scandal of the religious world.

News / School stopped / Church talks / JFS reunion

New secondary dropped The government has again said no to a new Modern Orthodox Jewish school in south Hertfordshire because the area already has good schooling options. Backers for the New Jewish High School (NJHS) in Hertsmere said they “gave it our best shot” after the Department of Education again turned down proposals. Planners only approve new free schools in areas deemed to be “of low standards”, which it is not. Plans for the envisioned NJHS came about following the merger in 2017 of two competing new Jewish free school bids – Kavannah and Barkai . In the week they merged, JFS and JCoSS offered an additional 90 places between them, while planning

permission approved at Hasmonean that year also incorporated additional places. This year, Yavneh College announced a new class. “We have given it our best shot,” said

NJHS supporter Eve Sacks. “We believe the pressure of potentially having a new Jewish secondary school pushed other Jewish schools to open more places, which we hope they will continue to do.” A statement from umbrella body Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS) said NJHS proposers “have certainly given our existing schools food for thought and a determination to ensure that a provision is in place to expand their current size”. PaJeS added that it was “working with existing secondary schools to ensure increased capacity across the board” and “liaising with the government to try to receive financial support for the expansion”.

JFS plans reunion Europe’s largest Jewish secondary school will welcome graduates from 1982-92 next month in the first of a series of reunion events. JFS will host former pupils who attended the site in Kentish Town, before it moved to the Kenton site in 2002. Headteacher and former head girl, Rachel Fink (pictured), said she was “excited to see lots of old faces again. But this time at the Kenton campus”. She added: “People always ask what it’s like being back at JFS. Now they can

come and see that it is like for themselves.” The school said it has plans for more reunions for different graduate groups. Tickets for the event on Sunday 30 June can be booked through the alumni website jfsconnect.com

CHURCH ‘IN DIALOGUE’ WITH COMMUNITY The Church of Scotland has said it needs “internal conversations” about antisemitism within its ranks, as it revealed dialogue with the Jewish community is now being “professionally facilitated”. It follows the publication of the Church’s Blue Book, which states “it is important

we deal with this issue within the Church”. It said the facilitated dialogue came about “as a result of a commitment made by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and [its then] Principal Clerk, Very Rev Dr John Chalmers”. The Blue Book states that “one of the outcomes of this is to put energy into internal

facing conversations about the meaning of antisemitism within the Christian tradition”. Church officials would not be drawn whether “facilitation” meant “mediation,” if the Church had recognised a problem of antisemitism, or if the new approach had come about as a result of complaints.

News / Chelsea campaign / Chief ’s plea

Premier League stars set their sights on worthy goal

by Justin Cohen in Boston justinc@thejngroup.com @CohenJust

David Luiz is a man on a mission – and only part of it has to do with football. The Chelsea footballer was among the club’s superstars in Boston this week for a charity match to raise funds for 15 antidiscrimination causes in the UK and America, including the Community Security Trust (CST) and Holocaust Educational Trust. The match was conceived by The Blues’ owner Roman Abramovich and his counterpart at the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft, as part of ongoing efforts to highlight the rise in antisemitism around the world. Luiz, one of the best known names and recognisable faces in the international game, is clear that events on the pitch are secondary to occasions like this. “And not just this week,” the Brazilian told me during a break in the three-day schedule stateside. “With football, we have the opportunity to travel the world and show a positive example. We travelled thousands of miles to do something really special and it’s great to be here because of the cause. We know people love football. I hope they understand the cause.” He cautioned against falling into the trap of believing it isn’t possible to change people’s perceptions about difference – and is keen to use his fame to play a role. “Football has a lot of power around the world. It is up to us to change the way people think and the way they see life. We have, on this trip, people of different religions and nationalities and we all respect each other.”

Chelsea stars in Boston this wee. Inset: Justin Cohen and David Luiz

For teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the anti-racism campaign conceived by Abramovich feels particularly close to home. “I’ve been a victim when I was young,” he said. “It’s important we do as much as we can as a club.” Chelsea has not shied away from the fact it has, over the years, had a problem with antisemitism among some fans. The midfielder insisted he has not been “oblivious” to incidents of anti-Jewish hate, even this season, adding: “This game has come at a good moment.” But the fact the squad took a break from their preparations for the Europa League final to play a friendly match thousands of miles away underlines the importance the club places on its No To Antisemitism campaign, launched last year in the presence of

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and other community leaders. With the regular build-up to such a big game being a mixture of rest, training and intense monitoring at their UK training base, Maurizio Sarri, however, said: “We go there for a good reason, so as a man I’m very happy to go.” This week’s match was the latest stage of a campaign that has included Holocaust survivors speaking to the men and women’s teams, the production of resources for stewards and the introduction of educational sessions for supporters responsible for antisemitic behaviour through ignorance. The campaign has even been incorporated into a course at New York University. The Chelsea Foundation runs equalities training workshops in 75 schools across the

UK, and Chelsea sent five coaches and two educators to Boston ahead of the players’ arrival in order that hundreds of American schoolchildren could also benefit. For the initiative – developed with the Football Association – youngsters enjoy a kickabout while learning about the positive impact of diversity through examples in sport and the Chelsea set-up itself. In our interview, Luiz spoke of the impact on him of hearing an “inspirational” talk last year from survivor Harry Spiro. He said: “I learnt a lot and it was a great opportunity for us. In school, I never understood a lot about history.” He recalled Harry’s “energy” in passing on the memory to future generations and how he had refused to allow his horrific experiences to govern the rest of his life. Footballers often get bad press. But while Luiz and his teammates are determined to use their voice to raise awareness, you cannot help but take away some hope that sport and the spotlight it brings can make a dent in tackling the world’s oldest hatred. Such icons have so much potential in this fight. One year in, their work has just begun.

ISRAELI FIRM BEHIND WHATSAPP SPYWARE

WhatsApp has urged users to update to the latest version after an Israeli company was found to have been using vulnerabilities in the app to infect phones with spyware to monitor communications. The spyware is so sophisticated it can infect a victim’s phone by the attacker simply calling the phone number using the app’s call function. The victim does not even need to answer the call and the call log is automatically deleted. “The attack has all the hallmarks of a private company reportedly that works with governments to deliver spyware that takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems,” WhatsApp said in a statement.

BIBI GIVEN TWO WEEKS TO FORM GOVERNMENT Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has handed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu two more weeks to form a government. Rivlin and Netanyahu met on Monday at the Presidents’ Residence in Jerusalem to discuss Netanyahu’s need for extra time. Rivlin is authorised by the country’s Basic Law to allocate an additional two weeks. Netanyahu had noted that he would require extra time to complete his negotiations with other parties to form a new government owing to “scheduling constraints”.

Beresheet will boldly go again The foundation behind a prize known as the Jewish Nobel has said it will give £768,000 ($1 million) to the next Israeli space mission, after a failed attempt to land on the moon last month. The Genesis Prize Foundation (GPF), the philanthropic fund of several wealthy Russian-speaking Jewish oligarchs, this week said it would back Beresheet 2, announcing the support on Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day). “This grant deviates from our traditional philanthropy, which focuses on one initiative each year in partnership with our laureates,” said GPF cofounder Stan Polovets. “But in its essence, support of Beresheet 2 is exactly why we established our foundation: to inspire the Jewish people, to strengthen the bond between Israel and the diaspora, and to instil a sense of pride in

It will be the first time that the holiest site to Jews will be closed on the day marking the reunification of Jerusalem under Israeli control in 30 years. VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

It’s nul points to the party poopers

One of the best things about the Eurovision Song Contest is that it has never taken itself too seriously. Its devotees know and revel in this. It is a place for kitsch, colour and some average songs (may we refer you, dear reader, to this year’s San Marino entry), with dancing, minimal clothing and a carefree attitude. It can, on occasion, be a place for political statements (this year’s Icelandic entry, anti-capitalist techno punk rockers Hatari, aren’t short of a few words when it comes to Israel and the Palestinians), so expect some ‘Palestine’ wristbands and some kind of ‘solidarity’ stunt from the Reykjavik boys in lipstick, spiked masks and bondage gear. Expect lots of Israelis gushing about how much they love their country, too. The finals, televised live on Saturday night (follow our all-singing, alldancing songfest blog, live from Expo Tel Aviv at jewishnews.co.uk!), will be a slick production given that this is Israel and, given that Netta was such a popular winner last year, we hope there will be a lot of warmth from the room. If there is, Israelis will reciprocate. You don’t need to agree with a country’s politics to visit, meet the people and enjoy their customs. Israelis are already opening their doors for Friday night dinners to any visitor who wants to come to one. Amid the billboards and boycott calls, unlikely friendships will emerge. Yes, there may be some unwelcome guests, but as us Brits know, it is terribly bad form to come to someone’s party and make a scene. Let’s hope they get a nul-points reception. A psyche of tears and smiles Jenni Frazer questions the conscience of Israel whereby some are running to shelters to shield themselves from rockets being fired from Gaza (and, in turn, unfortunately making the ultimate sacrifice) while less than 40 miles away plans for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest are in full swing. This epitomises the mindset of Israelis; within one week, we commemorate and remember via Yom HaShoah those who were murdered in the Holocaust following through to Yom HaZikaron, remembering our brave soldiers who died defending the country through its many wars,

THIS WEEKEND'S SHABBAT TIMES... Shabbat comes in Friday night 8.35pm

and then immediately we are found celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, the founding of this very special nation. Yes, tears and laughter play an important role in the Israeli psyche and are a major survival mechanism for living in this very dangerous neighbourhood. In good times as well as bad and sad ones, it is all about having the courage to carry on, whereby we pay homage to our past and look forward with hope for our future. Stephen Vishnick Tel Aviv

“Oh great! Another European contest where we’re wasting our time taking part!”

Rosa Ben-Horin’s reference to the Hatikvah recalls an old Al Jolson version of it I own on a 78rpm record (Jewish News, 9 May). [Big shellac disks, kiddies, with songs on both sides and you play them with a needle on a turntable!] Pre-independence, the words are different at the end. Instead of ‘Lihyot am chofshi, be’artzenu; eretz Tzion ve’Yerushalayim’, ie, ‘to be a free people in our land,

the land of Zion and Jerusalem’, Jolson sings: ‘Loshuv le’eretz avoseinu, le’eretz Dovid, Dovid Hanos,’ ie, ‘to return to the land of our fathers, the land of David, David the Prince’. It is assumed that with the establishment of the state and ‘return’ achieved, ‘a free people in a free land’ became the priority message.

Editorial comment and letters

HATIKVAH WAS CORRECT I’m responding to Rosa Ben-Horin’s letter suggesting it was wrong for the British Jewish leadership to sing the Hatikvah at the end of the Yom HaShoah commemoration. She proposes the leadership should instead sing the Internationale in Yiddish. Her letter contains misleading information and smacks of revisionism. The main leader of the uprising, Mordechai Anielewicz, was a Zionist and not a Bundist as she claims. He started off in the Betar youth movement and later joined Hashomer Hatzair. He studied Hebrew. Zivia Lubetkin founded the Zionist anti-fascist bloc and was also on the steering committee of ZOB, the main resistance organisation participating in the uprising. She managed to escape and settled in Israel. Another of the sub-leaders was Yitzhak Zuckerman, who was also leader of the Zionist Dror Hechalutz youth movement. He also escaped and settled in Israel. It is true Marek Edelman was a Bundist, but the Bundist youth

movement put their differences aside and joined the Zionists in participating in the uprising. Even the Stroop report submitted by SS General who repressed the uprising makes reference to “captured He-Halutz women” whom you can see in the photos staring defiantly at the Nazi photographers. One of Poland’s leading partisan figures was Avi Kovner, a poet and Zionist member of Hashomer Hazair. He later moved to Israel to join the Haganah and fight during the war of independence. Sonderkommando Filip Muller, who was in Auschwitz-Birkenau in March 1944, witnessed Czech Jews singing the Hatikvah as a demonstration of defiance as they refused to undress while being brutally beaten by SS guards. It was entirely appropriate for the Hatikvah to be sung at the end of the ceremony. Should Rosa wish to sing the Internationale next year, she’ll probably be singing it solo.

REUBENS IS SUCH A GREAT LOSS

I’m really sad for the loss of the member of the Reuben family that has triggered the closure of a much-loved kosher reastaurant. I wish them all a long life. They gave us such a welcoming place and such great food. My family went there for years. We celebrated our mother’s 85th birthday there, and its food helped heal my sister. I’d pop in to get her something on my way to visiting her in hospital, which made her feel better and whole again. It was our central meeting spot. We will miss it.

We salute memorial The Raoul Wallenberg Foundation praises the decision to site the Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre in Victoria Tower Gardens, next to Parliament (jewish news.co.uk). We celebrate Ms May’s unflinching support for the initiative and, in particular, this line in your report: “Seeing this through is a sacred, national mission. In the face of despicable Holocaust denial, this memorial will stand to preserve the truth forever.”

We are also delighted that four former prime ministers back the project. We hope the British Righteous will have a special place within the memorial, along with one of the greatest Second World War heroes, Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved the lives of 669 children in 1938. The descendants of the rescued can be counted by the thousands.

Memorial too important for such foot-dragging ALEX BRUMMER

CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL

W

hen my father died a year ago, among the things that passed with him was the direct connection to his parents, who died at Auschwitz, and three brothers who were also the victims of fascism. For much of my life growing up on the south coast the tragedy of the Shoah was unmentionable. It was the subject deemed by my Anglo-Jewish mother as too sensitive and painful to discuss. When my father’s survivor siblings came to visit, snippets of the personal tragedy of the family would emerge. But the dialogue among siblings tended to be in native Hungarian. The war stories we heard around the Friday night or Sunday lunch table were much more likely to be tales of bombings in Kemp Town as the Luftwaffe emptied ordinance as it headed back across the Channel. There was, however, one annual remem-

brance of what had befallen the family. Every spring my father would be called to the law at Hove Hebrew Congregation. It would be an emotional moment as the chazzan, the late Kalman Fausner (z’’l), would recite the memorial prayer for each missing member of the family. Tears would flow. The date of the yahrzeit had been established from the train timetables as the Jews of Hungary, aided by the country’s Arrow Cross thugs, were shipped out in 1944. It was a curse and blessing, because the Jews under Hungarian control were among the last to be transported, my father’s two younger sisters, a niece who lived with the family and a younger brother survived the camps. My grandfather Sandor (after who I am named), with a distinctive red beard, and grandmother Fanya, were shipped directly to the Auschwitz gas chambers and ovens. The fates of my father’s three brothers Ephraim, Daniel and Yitzhak are shrouded in mystery, but has been customary to mark their yahrzeit on the same day as the parents. Ephraim and Daniel were proprietors of

MY FATHER DIDN’T WANT HIS PARENTS’ MEMORY TO BE BURIED WITH HIM AFTER 103 YEARS a coffee shop in nearby Berehovo where they lived. Early in the 1940s they were taken away from their homes and families by Hungarian militias to work in the forests. At first there was correspondence and food and winter clothing parcels were sent. Then silence. It was only at the seder table just a few weeks ago that my Aunt Sussie, a survivor, raised a question I never really thought about: what happened to their wives and children? All of this has come flooding back because I and my brother Daniel have received yahrzeit notices from our synagogues. My father had been particular about this. He didn’t want the

memory of his parents and lost brothers to be buried with him after his 103 years. These events are too important to be forgotten. Recently, for Holocaust Memorial Day remembrances in Richmond, my son Gabriel, a professional filmmaker and editor, made a video of a survivor member of our community, Sam Freiman, one of the ‘Boys.’ So moved were civic leaders by his story they have sponsored a longer version to be shown as part of the curriculum in Richmond schools. One could not but help contrast the ‘can do’ attitude of our Richmond Council with the shameful foot-dragging by Westminster Council over the Holocaust Memorial Learning Centre to be built at Victoria Tower Gardens. It is a project with the full-blooded support of all living prime ministers and has just been granted a further £25m by the government for protection of the gardens around the new site. A Unesco group is among others to have lodged objections. Remembrance is too important for such obstruction. There can be no excuse for further delays for permission first sought in 2016.

Farage isn’t naïve – he knows what he’s doing JOAN RYAN MP

e’re all too familiar with Nigel Farage’s fearmongering populism. It is, therefore, shocking but totally unsurprising to find that the Brexit Party leader repeatedly appeared as a guest of a US far-right talkshow host and reportedly peddled conspiracy theories, some of which are associated with antisemitism. Farage is no political innocent, yet on Alex Jones’ Infowars website he repeatedly trotted out words and phrases such as “globalists” and “new world order”, which are the stock-in-trade codewords of the US alt-right and antisemites across the globe. As the Community Security Trust has rightly suggested, Jones is “a notorious conspiracy theorist who should be beyond the pale for any mainstream politician”. In recent days, we’ve learned that Farage has also peddled themes often associated

with antisemitism to attack the Jewish philanthropist George Soros. His language – arguing that Soros is “the biggest danger to the entire western world” and suggesting that he “wants to break down the fundamental values of our society and, in the case of Europe, he doesn’t want Europe to be based on Christianity” – represents not so much a dog whistle to antisemites as a foghorn. Together with his claims that Soros’ foundation, which supports liberal democratic causes, is engaged in “the biggest level of political collusion in history” and that he is trying to “fundamentally change the makeup, demographically, of the whole European continent”, this is a truly noxious cocktail of smears. Farage has been careless in his language on previous occasions – not least when he failed to challenge a caller to his LBC programme who suggested that Israel had the US Democrats and Republicans “in their pockets” and himself went on to reportedly talk about a “powerful Jewish

FARAGE’S LANGUAGE REPRESENTS NOT SO MUCH A DOG WHISTLE AS A FOGHORN lobby” – but these recent revelations suggest a pattern. It is one that is the inevitable result of the troubling far-right political company that Farage has long kept. Hungary’s democracy-destroying leader, Viktor Orbán, whose government has whipped up antisemitism for its own electoral benefit; Marine Le Pen, who Farage endorsed for the French presidency in 2017; and the Alternative for Germany, whose leaders, Israel’s ambassador to Germany suggested last week, have made statements that are “highly insulting for Jews, for Israel and for the entire issue

of the Holocaust”, but for whom Farage has campaigned. Neither can we rely any longer on the Labour leadership to take a moral lead. Jeremy Corbyn has been shown to have repeatedly propagated conspiracy theories. No wonder he spent so much energy and effort last year fighting Labour’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. This, too, has had inevitable consequences. Twitter and Labour party online forums are awash with Corbyn supporters pushing all manner of antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories: linking Israel to 9/11 and ISIS; spreading centuries-old nonsense about the “Rothschilds” and Jewish bankers and financiers. And, most offensively, suggesting Jews and “Zionist” colluded with their Nazi persecutors. The politics of fear and scapegoating is disfiguring our national discourse. It’s high time those of us who believe in the values of decency, respect and tolerance reclaim it.

One Year 5 pupil said: “It was a meaningful day that made me think deeply about the story of Israel and how proud I am to be part of the celebration. The dancing and cake were great as well.”

Chazak campaigns to connect people

The Jewish education charity hopes to raise £750,000 this Sunday for three exciting projects, writes Deborah Cicurel “We want to make people feel connected to Judaism,” enthuses Rabbi Yitsy David of Chazak. “We want to strengthen their Jewish identity and pride.” Chazak is a dynamic communitybased organisation established nearly 10 years ago by Rabbis Shlomo Farhi and Moshe Levy. From thought-provoking shiurim and Poland trips, to lunch and learn sessions at schools, universities and the workplace, the Sephardi charity organisation has touched the lives of thousands of Jews of all ages, religious levels and backgrounds. On 19 May, Chazak launches its Charidy campaign, aiming to raise £750,000 for three exciting new projects, as well as its existing activities and programmes. First, the Chazak bus will become the official mobile hub for dynamic learning programmes and will travel all over north

London for educational purposes. Second, the funds will go towards a senior educator, who will head up a new learning programme for boys and girls returning from yeshiva and seminary. The third project is aimed at Jewish women, with a prestigious international speaker being hired to run a comprehensive programme.

Have bus, will travel for education

“This campaign is our one fundraising opportunity for the year, to raise much needed funds for Chazak’s projects for the upcoming year,” says managing director Rabbi David. “The charity campaign is an opportunity to help people both donate and get involved by raising money for Chazak, which is a really nice way for people to feel they can give back and be part of the organisation.” For Chazak’s latest fundraiser, sponsors will triple the amount with each pound that is raised. “Chazak donors and supporters especially like the idea of getting young people involved,” adds Rabbi David. “Instead of just seeing the larger donor carrying the weight of the organisation, this gives everyone an opportunity to pitch in.” As well as raising money for the three projects, proceeds will go towards funding community-wide family events, such as

Shabbatonim and the Mashalla Fair, events focused on specific age groups, such as Friday night dinners for young professionals, kids’ football tournaments and mother and daughter brunches. There are also weekly lunch and learns at a variety of Jewish and non-Jewish schools, educational trips abroad to countries such as Israel and Poland, and after-school programmes for teenagers. “Everyone in the community benefits from Chazak,” says Rabbi David. “We’re in Jewish and non-Jewish schools, we’re in every synagogue, we’re in people’s homes doing events for grandparents, children and everyone in between. We’re taking care of you and your community.” • To find out more about Chazak, visit wearechazak.com or to donate to its charidy campaign, visit charidy.com/wearechazak

GREAT MINDS… Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D B Weiss met while studying literature at Trinity College Dublin in 1995 — and, according to Weiss, bonded over the fact they were “two American Jews in Dublin” with “no Irish roots of any kind.” Weiss and Benioff decided to adapt Game of Thrones in 2011 from the fantasy novels of George R R Martin and swiftly gathered a fanbase more numerous and hungry for action than Daenerys’ Dothraki Bloodriders.

2

WHO JEW YOU THINK YOU ARE? Author George R R Martin, whose works provided the idea for Game of Thrones, discovered earlier this year he is a quarter Jewish while taking part in PBS’ genealogy programme, Finding Your Roots. Martin, 70, grew up in Bayonne, New Jersey, the son of a part-Irish mother and half-Italian father. Martin was very close to his Catholic paternal grandmother, Grace, whose Italian husband, Louis, left her and started a new family without a divorce. Given Martin’s surprising DNA results, experts speculated she must have had an affair with a Jewish man.

3

SHALOM TO THE SEVEN KINGDOMS! Season six saw the appearance of not one, but two Israel actors on set. Ania Bukstein, who is also a singer and model, played Kinvara, a Red Priestess in service of the Lord of Light, who supports Daenerys Targaryen’s claim to the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, Yousef Sweid, an Arab-Israeli from Haifa who has appeared in Homeland, played Ash, a freed slave from the city-state Mereen.

4

BEHIND THE MASK Actress Laura Pradelska, who portrayed the mysterious shadowbinder Quaithe, has spoken openly about antisemitic abuse she experienced on social media, as well as her own family’s story of survival during the Holocaust. Speaking in 2017, Pradelska recalled how her paternal grandmother, Klara Stern, discovered both her parents and seven-month-old son were murdered by the Nazis, before she was deported to Auschwitz and later forced onto a death march. Her maternal grandmother, Esther Schultz, also survived the Holocaust, having managed to secure forged Aryan papers because of her “beautiful blond, blueeyed looks and the ability to speak Polish without a Yiddish accent”. She was able to smuggle food into the ghetto for her family and later, at much personal risk, saved the lives of her sister and her two young nieces.

came after he was introduced to acclaimed German-Jewish composer Hans Zimmer. Noticing the young musician’s talent, Zimmer took Djawadi under his wing and soon had him working on such films as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Island and Batman Begins.

7

JEWISH GEOGRAPHY Over eight series, the location crews have been busy sourcing places to film Game of Thrones – and many of these have strong Jewish connections. Pentos, one of the free cities of Western Essos, is in fact Ouarzazate in Morocco, which is the burial place of 2nd Century sage, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Morocco’s Essaouira, home to a once-thriving Jewish quarter dating from the 1700s, doubles up for Astapor, the Red City. Meanwhile, the Long Bridge of Volantis was filmed at The Roman Bridge in Cordoba, Spain, birthplace of Jewish philosopher Maimonides. Elsewhere, Mdina in Malta is the location for The King’s Landing Gate. Jewish merchants once made up one third of Malta’s ancient capital and to this day, there is a street with Hebrews signs pointing to

5

HERE COME THE CAMEOS… If your son happens to be the writer of a smash hit fantasy show, you might expect better costumes than mere peasant robes for a cameo role! Nevertheless, David Benioff ’s father Stephen, who is a former head of Goldman Sachs, and mother Barbara, happily starred as a merchant couple during the series four premiere. Another Jewish cameo was ‘spied’ this season, when former deputy director of the CIA, David Cohen, donned some sackcloth and fur, while holding a bowl of warming soup.

6

MAN BEHIND THE MUSIC The familiar strains of Game of Throne’s sweeping theme tune was written by Ramin Djawadi, but his big break

FANTASTIC BEASTS From giant ice spiders and krackens to shadowcats, unicorns and manticores, the Torah might not seem a likely source to read about the mythical creatures that appear on GOT. But actually there are many references to the supernatural. The Book of Nehemiah makes mention of a “dragon’s spring” in the vicinity of Jerusalem, where a dragon was thought to live as the spirit of the well. Giants are also aplenty, with Goliath’s famous battle against David just one of the many larger-than-life characters referenced in the Torah. While Jon Snow has a loyal direwolf named Ghost, the Bible makes mention of Saul’s attempts to conjure up Samuel’s spirit by visiting the witch of Endor and as for other sorcerers, diviners, astrologers and exorcists, they all get a mention in the Torah – and are expressly forbidden.  The last ever episode of Game Of Thrones airs on Monday at 2am and 9pm, on Sky Atlantic

Jewspoints! points! Francine Wolfisz gives a rundown of what to expect at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv…

T

oy vey! The Eurovision Song Contest is returning to the Holy Land, following Netta Barzilai’s thrilling victory last year with a quirky pop hit that featured clucking chicken noises and colourful kimonos. Two out of the previous three times Israel has won the competition – which last year was watched by a staggering 186 million viewers around the world – Jerusalem was nominated as the host city. But this year, the 26 finalists will gather for the first time in Israel’s second city and cultural capital, Tel Aviv. Now at 64-years-old, the Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running and most-watched non-sporting events in the world. Israel has stormed to victory a respectable four times, following on from A-Ba-Ni-Bi in 1978, Hallelujah in 1979, Dana International’s Diva in 1998 and Netta’s Toy in 2018. This latest win has not however been without its controversies, with supporters of the BDS movement, a Palestinian-led campaign advocating boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel, calling on artists to pull out of the contest. Iceland’s entry also shares similar sentiments, with a unusual bunch of fearsomelooking, bondage-clad band members protesting against capitalism and Israeli politics. Netta has fought back against the critics, adding that to snub such a celebration of diversity would be akin to “spreading darkness”, while pop diva Madonna, who is set to perform during the interval, has vowed to “never stop playing music to suit someone’s political agenda.” Politics aside, let’s just all sit back and enjoy the music and high probability that at least one of the acts will feature singing grannies, campy flight attendants or demon costumes. That and the UK dodging the dreaded nil points of Eurovisions past.

Eurovision Live! We’ll be blogging live from Tel Aviv this Saturday from 8pm!

Will Kobi bring it Home?

As a Tel Aviv native himself, there couldn’t possibly be a more apt title for Kobi Marimi’s song than Home. The 27-year-old, who is of Iraqi-Jewish descent, will represent Israel on very familiar ground when he takes to the stage with his pop-opera track on Saturday night.

Above: Pop icon Madonna is the headline act for the interval Israeli Eurovision hopeful Kobi Marimi

Born in Ramat Gan, Kobi began singing at the age of 13 and has been pursuing his dream of acting and singing ever since. Since he became the Israeli representative, Kobi has become the nation’s new sweetheart with his song, Home, which was written especially for him and reflects on personal and professional challenges he has faced in life. Viewers can expect a dazzling performance featuring Kobi dressed in a black tuxedo, velvet waistcoat and silver bow tie, with similarlydressed backing singers and an epic wall of flames behind him. One not to be missed.

Michael Rice will deliver his power ballad, Bigger Than Us, on Saturday night, in a bid to bring home the Eurovision trophy for the UK. The plucky 21-year-old from Hartlepool describes himself as “a very down-to-earth lad who is all about my friends and family.” He adds: “I love to make people laugh – my friends would describe me as hilarious, and I try to never take myself too seriously. “It’s such a huge honour to be representing my country at Eurovision – it really is a dream come true.” Since winning Eurovision: You Decide, Michael has been working up his vocal muscles with performances across Europe, including appearances on Croatian and Spanish TV, and

Eurovision events in Amsterdam, Madrid and Moscow. He’s also had time to visit Israel, taking in the sights and sounds of Tel Aviv and Haifa ahead of the song contest grand final this weekend. Of his all-time favourite Eurovision entries, Michael cites the ‘amazing’ Abba, as well as Conchita, Portugal’s transgender winner from 2017 and of course, last year’s winner, Netta. Speaking of which, Michael says his dream duet with a past entrant would be none other than the vivacious Toy singer. He says: “I could imagine it being so much fun with Netta. “Her performances are always so exciting to watch. “She’s a great artist and perfomer and brings something to the stage every time, leaving you wanting more – that’s what every great performer does.”

Fifth time lucky?

A win this year would put Israel on equal footing with the UK, France and Luxembourg, which have each won five times, while Sweden has won six times and Ireland an incredible seven times.

Israel won in 1978 – but not according to Jordan!

Just a month before Eurovision was held in Paris, IDF troops invaded Lebanon in Operation Litani, a military response to the Coastal Road Massacre, in

which 38 Israeli civilians, including 13 children, were killed and 71 wounded by Palestinian terrorists. Following this conflict, Jordanian state broadcaster JRTV refused to show the Israeli entry and instead broadcast pictures of flowers. When it became apparent that Israel would win with A-Ba-Ni-Bi, sung by Izhar Cohen and Alphabeta, JRTV ended the transmission and afterwards Jordanian news outlets announced the winner as Belgium – which actually came second.

Israel didn’t host the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest – despite winning in 1979!

Having just hosted the contest in Jerusalem, thanks to winning the year before in 1978 with A-Ba-Ni-Bi, Israel declined due to the expense and also because the date coincided with Yom Hashoah, which fell that year on April 19. It was staged instead in the Netherlands.

Have a Dale of a time Lucy Daltroff finds her happiness in Harrogate and discovers how the historic spa town provided a haven for Jewish child refugees during the Second World War The stunning Yorkshire Dales surrounding Harrogate

H

arrogate has long been known for its elegance and refinement and has consistently been voted the ‘Happiest Place in England’. So, with husband and son in tow, I decided to go on a visit to experience this contentment at close hand. Our first cause for satisfaction was the journey – driving up from London to North Yorkshire was a pleasant three-and-a-half hours (rather less than expected), while home for two nights was the Rudding Park Hotel, a country estate with large grounds that was once a stately home. Situated three miles from the centre of town, it is now known for its fine dining, recently completed spa and its golf course. While immersed in the beautifully warm outside pool (yes, it turned out to be quite possible in winter and in Yorkshire) I spoke to Louise from Leeds who was visiting with her husband. “We come here regularly as this is the best spa in the whole area and everyone in the hotels is so helpful,” she explained. I certainly shared her awe; we had never stayed in a place where our room had its own private luxurious hammam! The sun shone as we explored Harrogate town – how could we expect anything less? – so we could literally see the attractive Victorian and Georgian architecture in the best light. For two centuries, the waters of the town were a panacea for the aristocracy’s maladies and the springs were incorporated into a building, The Royal Pump Room, which is now also a museum. It is definitely worth a visit, and regular tours take place, during which the smell of the sulphur waters waft up from the basement. Their medicinal properties resulted in the authorities passing a law enshrining the right of anyone to be able to drink – and mandating an accessible outside tap. However, eight years ago, the water was declared unsafe, so the tap now displays a warning notice. But apparently no one has fallen ill from it in 300 years, so plenty of people still imbibe the waters (it tastes of salty eggs). A delightful collection of artefacts can also be found in the museum, with no real theme, apart from of Harrogate itself. There are Greek

ceramics, clothing and exhibits about the use of the waters in town. The Egyptology display includes the only wearable mask in the world of the god Anubis and an impressive collection of statues, carvings and jewellery.

Another extraordinary exhibit relates to Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of Nicholas II and the last tsarina of Russia, who was a frequent visitor to the spa and became the godmother to two local children. She regularly sent them gifts, including cutlery and cufflinks, some of which were made by Fabergé. Quaintly, the museum refers to her murder as “tragically ending the Tsarina’s connection to Harrogate”, which was perhaps a rather prosaic description of such a historic event. Elsewhere, Harrogate boasts the attractive Valley Gardens and a whole range of excellent shopping opportunities, with department stores and normal town shops at the higher level and individual boutiques and antique emporiums further down the hill. Also worth noting is Harrogate’s most famous building, Bettys Tea Rooms, as well as the sprawling landscape of the Yorkshire Dales beyond. The existence of the Harrogate Jewish community is linked to the town becoming a fashionable spa and the subsequent expanse of the railways. Many members ran boarding houses for visitors and, in 1918, there were enough residents (22 families) to set up syna-

gogue services over an antique shop. Ten years later, the premises of a school church became available and stayed in use until the present synagogue was built in 1968. Philip Morris, who has lived in Harrogate with his wife, Anne, for 59 years, kindly showed us around and explained that while work was going on, the Quakers generously bequeathed their meeting room for services, as it was never used by them on a Saturday. Although plain on the outside, the

but instead has a rota system that is especially popular as it comes with the use of a flat. Services are held every Shabbat and there is capacity for 200, as well as an on-site kosher catering facility for simchas. Philip explained that a few months before, the Chief Rabbi had visited Harrogate to celebrate the community’s centenary. The town has another Jewish connection. A villa, originally a parsonage, became a home for Jewish girl refugees aged 10 to 16, before and during the Second World War. Boys were already housed in Leeds. A contemporary described the scene: “It was awful to see the poor things arrive as if they were mere parcels, with numbers and labels attached and suffering from lack of food and shelter”. The first group

synagogue inside is a handsome space that is well looked after. The coffers are quite healthy for a small community of just 172 members, owing to earlier bequests made by the Burton tailoring family, based in nearby Leeds. The synagogue does not have its own rabbi,

arrived on 7 December 1938. They were given a kind reception by the town, as well as all types of support, which included English lessons.” So even in those times they were made to feel welcome and happy, as becomes this lovely part of North Yorkshire.

SEDRA Emor BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND Perhaps one of the most all-encompassing statements of what it means to be Jewish is to be a Kiddush Hashem – a living embodiment of God’s name in this world. Taken from a verse in this week’s parsha, “I shall be sanctified in the midst of the Jewish people,” this mandate is wide and deep. Kiddush Hashem refers to public behaviour that brings pride to the Jewish people, and, consequentially, God: to act in public in a kind, dignified and honest manner, with the awareness we are both in the presence of others and of God. Our sages define two very specific manifestations of Kiddush Hashem. It includes the prosaic, daily public declarations of God’s holiness, such as in the prayers known as Kedushah and Kaddish. But in its extreme, martyrdom – dying because you are Jewish – is the ultimate Kiddush Hashem. It is rare a single mitzvah carries with it so much weight, yet also seems pedestrian. Kiddush Hashem includes the martyrs of the Holocaust, yet also quietly returning a lost object that could have been easily kept. It includes Jews who gave their lives while in prayer in shul, and also public acts of prayer. The paradox is palpable. Perhaps the answer is in the verse’s precise wording: it is not a command given actively, but passively. For many, choices will be small-scale, interacting with individuals, bringing light in micro-interactions that make the world a better place. For others, God presents them with a grander, and perhaps the ultimate challenge. We can’t control everything and everyone. How we respond is what matters, and we let God take care of the rest.

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about… Olympic athlete Caster Semenya? BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Caster Semenya (pictured) is a female athlete but has testosterone levels three times higher than normal, owing to a condition called hyperandrogenism. The International Association of Athletics Federations has ruled that the gold medal-winning sportswoman cannot compete in women’s events. So, what does the Torah say about this? It instructs that no person with an unfair advantage, even if it is born out of suffering, should be allowed to exercise that advantage. Even a poor person must not be favoured by a judge and given special consideration. Nowadays, the issues around lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and those who are intersex, which Semenya may be, add a socio-political element to the argument

on whether to simply accept the stated gender of a person. The Torah is not interested in the identity itself regarding fairness, but rather the advantage it confers. Therefore, the fact Semenya has a female partner who wore female traditional dress to their wedding while she

THE TORAH SAYS NO PERSON WITH AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE SHOULD EXERCISE IT

herself wore male dress does not impact on a question regarding whether Semenya has an advantage against other co-competitors they could not physically match. In Judaism, medical data, not social or political commentary, would be the indicator to any form of physical bar or limit. According to classical Judaism, women’s testimony has not been admissible to the Beth Din in judicial matters, except for in the most serious cases of personal status, such as claims over child parentage or a widow seeking permission to remarry. Paradoxically, despite the nonadmission of female testimony in everyday civil cases, in matters most personal, a woman’s evidence is admissible. Perhaps halacha will expand further its view on female testimony. Biblical practice shows that Deborah the prophetess acted as a judge, an example not of gender but the capabilities of a person that are assessed, as in Semenya’s case.  Rabbi Abel serves Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation and is padre to HM Armed Forces

The Bible Says What? ‘Being left-handed is good; being overweight is not’ BY RABBI PETE TOBIAS There are only two specific mentions of being left-handed in the Hebrew Bible. Both of them occur in the Book of Judges. In chapter 20, we are told the Benjamites included 700 left-handed soldiers among their ranks, all of whom were excellent with a slingshot. But the greatest benefit of being left-handed was enjoyed by Ehud, one of the earliest Judges of Israel, who features in chapter 3. The Israelites were being persecuted by the Moabites and their King, Eglon, demanded a tribute. Ehud was chosen to deliver it. Because he was left-handed, Ehud strapped his sword to his right thigh to be able to draw it. This fact would have been noted by those listening to this adventure when it was recounted. Whenever a soldier entered the presence of a king, he would be searched – but as the norm was for people to be righthanded, only their left thighs would

be checked for swords. The other feature of the story is that King Eglon clearly had a weight problem. And so it was that Ehud managed to find himself alone with King Eglon. When Ehud declared he had a message from God for the King of Moab, he drew his sword with his left hand and plunged it into Eglon’s large stomach. It went in so deep it disappeared up to the hilt, and Eglon was unable to remove it. What then happened was no doubt of great amusement to an ancient Israelite audience, but is sadly not appropriate for a family-friendly newspaper – so I’m afraid you’ll have to check Judges 3:22 for yourself to find out. But we can all celebrate that the left-handed Ehud struck a blow for the Israelites against the obese King of Moab.  Pete Tobias is rabbi at The Liberal Synagogue Elstree

Progressively Speaking What does it mean for Israel to host the Eurovision Song Contest? BY STUDENT RABBI DEBORAH BLAUSTEN Since Israel joined the Eurovision Song Contest in the 1970s, she has been represented by, among other things, a joint Jewish-Arab peace song, the first transgender performer to compete in and win the competition, and bands featuring members from more than eight countries. Netta Barzilai, who brought the competition back to Tel Aviv this year, did so on a wave of radical self-acceptance and female empowerment. The Israel of Eurovision reflects some of the most important progressive Zionist values. It’s a celebration of diversity, individuality, pluralism, internationalism, inclusivity and openness. Behind its garish costumes and frivolous and cheesy exterior is an important message about the cultural and social identity of modern Israel – a country whose representatives on other parts of the world stage are not always those

who reflect the same kind of values. There has been considerable discussion in the media about whether excitement around Eurovision and a desire to live in the fantasy world it creates risks eclipsing the important reality that not all who live under the jurisdiction of the Israeli government have access to the same freedoms the competition celebrates. In her song, Al Kol Eleh, the Israeli poet and songwriter Naomi Shemer talks about the balance of the bitter and the sweet. Its lyrics famously

contain the words, ‘don’t uproot what has been sown, don’t forget the hope’. She reminds us it is possible and important to hold complexity and to protect what is good and promising. It can be true that there are serious and important issues of religion and state, discrimination and occupation that deserve progress and attention, and that there are flourishing parts of Israeli society reflecting the very highest of Jewish values. As Eurovision comes to Tel Aviv this week, it waters the shoots of progress and brings energy, community and joy with it. Enjoying this moment does not mean ignoring the work still to be done, but the road ahead is long and weekends such as this symbolise what we work for; an open and unapologetic celebration of humanity, creativity and diversity.  Deborah Blausten is a rabbinic student at Leo Baeck College

Harry Dear Harry Hearing such harsh news must have been incredibly difficult and challenging for you both. The assisted conception process has many hurdles. Couples needing assisted conception suddenly

find themselves sharing a personal and intimate process in a public and medical arena. Sharing these details with friends and family can make this even more difficult. As you say, work, family, and social commitments continue. Many couples feel they are constantly hiding a secret life of clinics, tests and treatments and the emotion that goes with this. It might be helpful to know that most clinics are aware of the work-life balance and offer early morning and evening consultations to best accommodate clients. Professional counselling can provide a space for you both to share what you are going through and support you in navigating this complex journey. Dear Mrs JM We at the Jewish Deaf Association know how hearing aid problems can frustrate. That’s why our technology centre, with all different types of equipment, is here for people to try out before they consider purchasing. As regards your mum’s batteries, to tell if they are working, put the aid in the palm of your hand, close the battery housing door inwards; after a moment or two, put your other hand over the top. If the aid makes a whistling sound, it is working just fine.
