Jewish News wins landmark legal battle against Polish nationalists

Jewish News has won a decisive legal battle against Polish nationalists that threatened to silence allegations of the country’s complicity in Nazi crimes, writes Adam Decker. A bitter 18-month fight with the Polish League Against Defamation (PLAD) concluded in a Warsaw civil court last Thursday with the judge dismissing a claim by the organisation’s president, Mira Wzelaka, against an article published on jewishnews.co.uk in October 2017 headlined, ‘Polish restitution law excludes most Holocaust survivors and heirs’. Virtually every Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust fled the country after the war, making any new property claim almost impossible. Experts estimate the value of Jewish property in Poland stolen during the Second World War exceeds £750million. Wzelaka claimed our article implied Poles

were responsible for confiscation of Jewish property during the war and other atrocities against Jews. She also complained the word “German” should have been placed before the word “Nazi” to make it clearer that Poles were not guilty of property confiscation. However, the judge ruled that Wzelaka, who did not attend court, failed to prove her case. She could now take her case to the Appeals Court. The judge also admonished Wzelaka for attempting to manipulate the court by putting words that did not appear in the article in quotation marks. Jewish News editor Richard Ferrer said: “This is an important ruling for all media. The implications for freedom of speech and freedom of the press had we lost would have been catastrophic. Our lawyer cited relevant case law from the European Court of Human Rights and other Polish courts. I’m delighted the judge delivered a resounding vindication of our coverage.” The case comes in the wake of a controversial new Holocaust law introduced in Poland last year criminalising references to Poles’ complicity in the Holocaust. It was later downgraded from a criminal to a civil offence. PLAD’s claim against Jewish News was one of the first civil cases brought before a Polish judge under the new law. Jewish Leadership Council chief executive Simon Johnson said: “This is an important judicial statement on maintaining media freedom. Scrutiny may sometimes be inconvenient to those in public life, but a free press is essential to a moderndemocracy and to the rule of law. Jewish News is to be congratulated on successfully fighting to protect this important principle.” Continued on page 4

Hunt says BDS is ‘antisemitic’

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said those boycotting Israel are “antisemitic”, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Hunt tweeted in reaction to the German Parliament’s decision to label the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement “antisemitic”.

He tweeted: “Tremors, turbulence rather than racist, and that attempts to & terror in Mid East remind us of urgent portray it as antisemitic were “deceitful”. The academics added that stateneed for peace: two-state solution. But the foundations for peace are respect ments and actions supporting BDS were “protected by freedom of expression and & coexistence. “Boycotting Israel – the world’s only ... association, as enshrined in the Charter Jewish state – is antisemitic. I salute of Fundamental Rights of the EU”. However, an open letter signed wanted a complete ban on BDS. AfD parliamentarian Jürgen Braun by 60 Israeli academics had earlier urged them not to pass the said it showed his party was the true non-binding motion, arguing that friend of Israel, adding: “Antisemitism the BDS movement was political comes from the left and Islam.”

BOARD: DEBATE NEEDS SHAKE UP The Board of Deputies this week lamented the “descent of our political discourse” after Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage was hit by a milkshake in Newcastle. Farage was walking through the town centre when a protester doused him with what is believed to be a banana and salted caramel milkshake. A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of common assault and remains in custody, a Northumbria Police spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Shaken not stirred: Farage

The Board tweeted: “There is never an excuse in politics for physical attacks on people with whom we may disagree. From milkshakes on Nigel Farage to eggs at Jeremy Corbyn, it is deeply troubling to see the descent of our political discourse into acts of violence.” Farage later tweeted: “Sadly some remainers have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible. For a civilised democracy to work you need the losers consent, politicians not accepting the referendum result have led us to this.” This comes after far-right activist Tommy Robinson and UKIP MEP candidate Carl Benjamin were also pelted with drinks. In March, Brexitsupporter John Murphy, 31, was jailed for 28 days after he admitted to attacking Corbyn with an egg during the Labour leader’s visit to a mosque.

MPs guided by Jewish fears in fight against Islamophobia MPs used the Jewish experience of antisemitism to urge the government to adopt a definition of Islamophobia during a House of Commons debate late last week. The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims developed the definition and is now pressing the Tories to follow other parties in adopting it. Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has also urged it to do so. Ilford North MP Wes Streeting, co-chair of the APPG on British Jews and of the APPG on British Muslims, said the Christchurch mosque killings in March lent urgency to the debate. He explained that the APPG’s Islamophobia definition includes “a series of examples, inspired by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance [IHRA] definition of antisemitism, to help people to understand

how Islamophobia manifests itself”. Streeting said two Muslim organisations that had previously raised Jewish concerns – Muslim Engagement and Development and Cage – had “pointedly refused to support our definition”. The IHRA definition of antisemitism was adopted by the government in December 2016, making the UK the first country to do so. Opponents of IHRA said it risked shutting down free speech on Israel, while opponents of the Islamophobia definition say it risks shutting down speech on Islam.

Balls: Corbyn the CORBYN PRAISED ‘SALIENT’ PARTS OF HATEFUL SPEECH accidental racist Former Labour Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls has said Jeremy Corbyn “does not set out to be antisemitic but that’s where he ends up”, writes Mathilde Frot. “I am a Labour Party member, but I am ashamed of the way in which Labour has handled the antisemitism issue in the last year,” Balls said. He warned the party would remain “stuck on the issue” until Corbyn realised he had said “antisemitic things”. Balls was speaking at Finchley Progressive Synagogue’s fundraising gala, and was interviewed by CNN journalist Richard Greene. “To be fair to Jeremy Corbyn, he has been absolutely consistent in very many of his views for a very long time,” Balls joked, citing Corbyn’s views on the EU, Israel and US foreign policy. “He sees himself as a

Ed Balls in conversation with CNN’s Richard Greene

champion of tackling racism and promoting equality, but I think his anti-Americanism, his anti-imperialism, his anti-capitalism and his anti-Israel rhetoric take him to a place where he ends up saying things that are antisemitic,” he said. Balls helped to draw the evening’s raffle, prompting laughter from the audience when he read aloud the

personal phone numbers of raffle participants. He also took part in an auction, bidding £450 for a signed lyrics sheet by James Bond composer Don Black – but lost to another guest. The former politician was asked to speak at the gala by his sister-in-law, Erica Wax, who lived with Finchley Progressive Rabbi Rebecca Birk while at Harvard University.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn defended “salient points” made in an infamous speech by a former Iranian president calling for Israel’s destruction, writes Mathilde Frot. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech to students in Tehran in 2005 elicited immediate backlash. “As the [late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini] said, Israel must be wiped off the map,” the president told the World without Zionism conference. Writing for the Morning Star shortly after, Corbyn (pictured)) noted the public outrage prompted by the speech with suspicion: “Kofi Annan pointed out what had been said was wrong and con-

demned it. However, the alacrity with which Bush and Blair led the chorus makes one suspicious.” The article, one of many written by him for the left-wing daily, was discovered by investigative reporter Iggy Ostanin. “The opportunity provided by Ahmadinejad’s speech should be used to build dialogue with and within Iran, and […] on the issue of Palestine,” Corbyn wrote. “The context overlooked by sensationalist headlines was his speech also pointed out what Israel does to Palestine. All the righteous indignation never mentioned a few salient points.” He also condemned Israel’s “apartheid” and “depopulation of Palestinians.

JOURNO STANDS BY CAPITAL CLAIM The editor of a news website dismissed complaints about his publication’s claim that Tel Aviv is Israel’s capital, asserting incorrectly that it is the position of the UN. “Tel Aviv is, according to the U.N., the capital of Israel,” Sweden’s ABC Nyheter editor-in-chief Daniel Lilja wrote this week to a reader who sought a correction. He advised her to “study geography and Swedish grammar.” The Guardian and The Observer have corrected writers’ claims several times that Tel Aviv is the capital.

13 MILLION NAZI DOCS PUBLISHED The International Tracing Service in Germany has published online more than 13 million documents from Nazi concentration camps with information on more than 2.2 million people. The effort to put the archive online was undertaken in partnership with the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem. The tracing service, based in Bad Arolsen, Germany, has also changed its name to the Arolsen Archives-International Center on Nazi Persecution.

Shomrim pair guilty over robbery claims Two former members of Shomrim Stamford Hill have been convicted of falsely accusing two teens of a robbery in North London, writes Mathilde Frot. Delivery driver Thiago Alves, 38, and Michael Sher, 32, both pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice at Wood Green Crown Court. Alves was handed a sentence of eight months’ imprisonment, while Sher was sentenced to five months’ suspended for two years on Monday. Former Shomrim member Yaakov Nowogrodski, 27, was charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and false imprisonment but failed to attend court. Nowogrodski is believed to have fled abroad and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Police received reports two teenagers were detained for a robbery in Stamford Hill by members of the neighbourhood watch group in July 2017. Officers were told on arrival that the teens, aged 13 and 15, pushed Alves and demanded his moped keys. Police arrested the two teenagers at the scene and took them to a police

station where they were kept in custody for 16 hours. But CCTV of the incident disproved the story. Met Detective Sergeant James Leeks said: “Why these men decided to fabricate this case may never be explained. However, abusing the criminal justice system in such an underhand manner is disgraceful. Those responsible for this despicable deception will now have to face the consequences of their actions.” Rabbi Herschel Gluck, president of Stamford Hill Shomrim, said the

members involved were immediately suspended, adding that all members are DBS checked. Editor ‘glad’ over Campbell illness A Press TV reporter and editor of the website 5pillars has said he is “glad Alastair Campbell has depression” after the former Labour aide opened up about mental illness. The journalist and ex-spin doctor, 61, starred in new BBC Two documentary titled Alastair Campbell: Depression And Me, which aired this week. Roshan Salih wrote on social media: “I’m glad Alastair Campbell has depression. He absolutely deserves it for the role he played in facilitating the Iraq war which led to a million deaths.” He continued: “I hope and pray that he’s mentally tormented for the rest of his life. #alistaircampbell.” Speaking to Jewish News, Salih said he stood by his comments. “I know about mental health. I know about depression. “I have friends and family who suffer from it. It’s hell. If anyone deserves it, it’s him. He should be in a war court.” Salih attracted media coverage last year when he described Mitzvah Day as a “tactic used by Israel’s supporters to make links with Muslims” after an interfaith event. Earlier this year, he also objected to a Holocaust exhibition on Albanian Muslims’ efforts to save Jews from the Nazis at a Golders Green mosque. “No to normalisation. Boycott Israel and Israeli institutions,” he wrote in a tweet at the time.

JEWISH NEWS VICTORY IN LANDMARK LEGAL CASE Continued from page 1 Jewish News was represented by Andrzej Tomaszek, managing partner at Drzewiecki Tomaszek in Warsaw. Last week, Jewish peer Baroness Ruth Deech launched a blistering attack on Poland for “squatting on the property of three million” Holocaust victims, during a House of Lords debate on restitution. She said the country was “the most egregious offender” when it came to returning Nazilooted art, as peers debated a Bill to extend the ability of UK museums to return artworks to the descendants of their former owners. Deech said restitution was “symbolically important”, because it “sends a message to this war-torn world that, if the enemy despoiler does his worst, nevertheless, in the end, that wrong will be righted”. Deech was responding to Morawiecki’s announcement that his government would “never agree to any compensation payments for anyone” since his country was “the war’s major victim”. She said: “Congratulations on winning a case so important for the principles of freedom of speech and the right of ownership. Poland’s attempt to stifle factual analysis of its part in the Second World War has been thwarted.” Brooke Goldstein, executive director of The Lawfare Project, said: “Antisemites often seek to silence the truth by abusing the legal process. We set up The Lawfare Project for that exact reason – it should be the antisemites who have to defend themselves in court, not those who call out antisemitism, whether current

Protest against Jewish property claims

or historic. I congratulate the Jewish News for standing firm and winning an important victory for all who believe the law should protect our right to tell the truth and not be a weapon for those who would cover it up.” The European Jewish Congress said: “We congratulate Jewish News and hope this ruling will lead to introspection by those who are not willing to confront history.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said: “We welcome the verdict of the Polish court in this case. We have been concerned by Government and other actors in Poland in recent years trying to whitewash their past rather than come to terms with it and provide restitution. Polish history around the Holocaust is complicated, with both Polish heroes and Polish villains. “However, a brighter future is possible if we engage honestly and openly with history and build from its lessons a better tomorrow. We congratulate Jewish News on the successful defence of truth and justice in this case.”

KAFKA DOCS GIFTED German authorities this week handed over to Israel some 5,000 documents kept by a confidant of Franz Kafka, a trove whose plight could have been plucked from one of the author’s surreal stories. The papers returned include a postcard from Kafka from 1910 and personal documents kept by Max Brod, which experts say provide a window into Europe’s literary and cultural scene in the early 20th century. They are among some 40,000 documents, including manuscripts, notebooks and other writings.

‘COMEDIAN’ AXED Netflix has dropped a comedian who made jokes about the Holocaust and insulted a Jewish audience member who later complained in an email. Last month, Isaac Butterfield asked his audience at the Melbourne Comedy Festival to “imagine the joy of people when they heard the Jews were sent to the gas chambers,” the city’s Herald Sun newspaper reported. The email sent to Butterfield from a Jewish woman said the joke was “not remotely funny.” He responded: “If you can’t stand the heat get out of the oven.”

Chazak raises £785k in 36 hours Jewish education organisation Chazak raised more than £785,000 in 36 hours, meeting its target with an hour to spare, writes Mathilde Frot. The Sephardi organisation set up by Rabbis Shlomo Farhi, Moshe Levy and Yitsy David nearly 10 years ago, works with schools, shuls and other community groups to promote Jewish culture. Some 83 fundraisers placed hundreds of calls from Chazak’s double decker bus that was turned into a call centre for the occasion. Matching donors committed to trebling donations and doubling each pound raised during the bonus round in the final hour. Money raised will go towards funding Chazak projects over the next year, including taking students

on learning trips across London and will help pair children returning from seminar and yeshiva with a senior educator, as part of the new Beit Midrash programme. It will also help fund the Jewish Women’s Academy and the hire of an international female speaker to run a women’s programme. Levy said: “Chazak’s fundraising campaign is a fantastic example of how the community rallies together to support each other. No matter the age, observance, Sephardi or non-Sephardi, Chazak is there for everyone, in every school and shul. “Chazak is grateful to every person who donated and for our very generous matchers who trebled every donation so we could raise enough money to fund our programmes.”

Prince Charles used an official trip to Northern Ireland this week to visit Belfast’s Jewish community, where he met an 82-year-old woman who arrived on the Kindertransport. Ruth Kohner told the Prince of Wales how she escaped from Czechoslovakia in 1939 as he visited a synagogue in north Belfast. “It saved our lives,” said Kohner about the Kindertransport rescue effort which brought 10,000 Jewish

children to the UK by train in the months leading up to war. “It must have been very difficult for my parents, who had travelled 10 days by train, to bring me and my sister to escape, but they saved our lives.” Kohner spent the war at a farm in Millisle, near Belfast and went on to run a family clothing business, but said her father lost many relatives in the Holocaust, including his own mother.

SKITTLES ARE KOSHER Skittles are now officially kosher. The Kashrut division of the London Beth Din (KLBD) confirmed last Thursday all current stocks of the confectionery around the UK have kosher approval. Skittles dropped E120 – a food colouring made from beetles’ blood, previously used in red skittles – from the ingredients list. A KLBD spokesperson said: “We are very excited to bring Skittles back to the Jewish community. Wherever you are in the UK, you can now pick up a kosher approved packet.”

JOHANNSON ENGAGED Is this third time lucky for Scarlett Johannson? The Jewish actress and Colin Jost, the co-head writer of Saturday Night Live (SNL), are engaged. Johannson, 34, has been married twice before, but it will be the first marriage for Jost, 36, a co-anchor of the Weekend Update segment on SNL. Johansson’s publicist Marcel Pariseau confirmed to the Associated Press that the couple, who have been dating for about two years, are officially engaged. Johannson and Jost walked the red carpet together at the première of Avengers: Infinity War last year.

Mizrachi UK inspires thousands nationwide

Rabbis Jeremy Lawrence and Andrew Shaw flank Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis

More than 7,000 people took part in a weekend of Jewish learning last week, as Israeli educators flew in to speak to British Jews at synagogues around the country. Mizrachi UK’s Weekend of Inspiration event, spanning 37 Jewish communities and seven schools, involved a programme of talks from speakers, including 28 religious Zionist and Modern Orthodox rabbis. Among the speakers were two bereaved mothers, including Torah educator Rachelle Fraenkel, whose teenage son Naftali was kidnapped and murdered along with two other boys in 2014, prompting the last Gaza war. Joining her was Cheryl Mandel, whose 24-year-old son Daniel was killed in Nablus, in the Occupied Territories, in 2003 while serving in the Israel Defence Forces. At Kinloss Synagogue in London, the programme of events began with a talk called “Anti-Zionism as the new Antisemitism”, by Rabbi Doron Perez, head of Mizrachi World Movement, while younger participants took part in a youth track for Years 9 to 13. Other talks covered subjects such as religious Zionism, leadership, outreach, kashrut, financial planning for those emigrating to Israel, and even a session on

“developing the rounded Jewish personality”. Rabbi Joseph Dweck, Senior Rabbi of the S&P Sephardi Community, gave an evening talk titled “Why every Jew should be fixated on Israel”, while Israeli journalist Sivan Rahav-Meir took part in a panel discussion about Israeli technological prowess. The keynote events last Thursday provided a simultaneous launch to the weekend, with activities at Borehamwood, Bushey, Chigwell, Edgware, Hampstead Garden Suburb, Hendon, Leeds and Salford. Organisers said the educators spoke to 6,000 Jews in synagogues and 1,400 students in seven schools, including JFS, Hasmonean and Yavneh High School in Manchester. “We were delighted to provide such a high calibre of educators,” said Mizrachi UK chief executive Rabbi Andrew Shaw. “Our aim is to produce the future Modern Orthodox and religious Zionist leadership for the UK community. “This weekend demonstrated what that leadership could look like.” Perez added that it was “a remarkable expression of Mizrachi UK’s impact… It was a privilege to be a part of it”.

She appeared alongside a Hari Krishna monk, a niqabwearing Muslim activist, a bisexual Christian and a transgender pagan, as the documentary-makers sought to showcase some of the 250,000 religious people in Wales under the age of 30. The cameras filmed Hannah’s family making challah before welcoming family and friends for a traditional Friday night dinner. The Welsh Jewish community has always been small, once standing at 5,500 in 32 communities. Wounded soldiers to compete in Israel Wounded British military veterans will travel to Tel Aviv next week to compete with their Israeli counterparts in a groundbreaking new initiative, writes Justin Cohen. Partners and children of injured personnel will join the five-day Veteran Games – which have been more than a year in the planning – to celebrate the vital roles sports and family play in rehabilitation. Taking place at rehabilitation centres run by charity Beit Halochem in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, the initiative will include a conference on post-traumatic stress disorde and mental health and a programme for families to encourage them to share experiences and build friendships. The event is supported by leading rehabilitation and forces organisations, including The Royal Marines Charity, RAF Benevolent Fund, Rock to Recovery, Veterans Scotland, Combat Stress, The Not Forgotten Association and the Association of Jewish ExServicemen and Women. Several of the more than 100 competitors have won medals at the Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry. Jonathan Ball, chief executive of The Royal Marines Charity, said: “Shared experiences for military veterans are a strong source of physical and mental healing, even more so across differing nationalities who are battling identical challenges. We are sure this will ensure a powerful bond and new enduring friendships. “However, the experiences and battles of their depend-

ents are often forgotten. So, we are delighted the families of our Royal Marines will meet and share with others from Britain and Israel… and will find that shared common burdens become lighter.” Among the participants will be Matt Tomlinson, former Royal Marines Regimental Sergeant-Major, who received the Military Cross for bravery. He said: “The transition to civvy street is hard enough, but what you see on deployment can leave you with many intrusive thoughts that never go away. The many deaths of friends can take its toll on anyone’s mental health.” The Chelsea Foundation is also backing the Games, providing football coaching for families and specialist workshops for Israeli sports teachers. Bruce Buck, Chelsea FC chairman, said: “We have supported veterans in our local communities for many years and have seen the healing power sports can have to overcome challenges and

unite people. Our coaches will be meeting and working with veterans and their families.” The landmark conference element will be chaired by Sir Simon Wessely, consultant advisor in psychiatry to the British Army, along with Tel Aviv University’s Professor Zahava Solomon. He said: “It is vitally important to look not just within our own country and its armed services, but also to look beyond.” The programme is funded by The Patron Charitable Initiatives, the Pears Foundation, Rachel Charitable Trust, The Wolfson Family Charitable Trust, The Exilarch’s Foundation, The Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation and The Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust. Spencer Gelding, chief executive of Beit Halochem UK, said: “The contribution of the armed services is immeasurable, and it is our ambition to help pave the way for best practice with regards to physical and mental rehabilitation of wounded veterans.”

JN LETTER LEADS TO OFFER A historic Sephardi care home complex for elderly Jews in Wembley has reached out to an 81-year-old Jewish News reader who said he felt let down by carers in his current sheltered housing accommodation in Stamford Hill. Leon Newmark, who lives with fellow veterans of both HM Armed Forces and the Israel Defence Forces, said they “no longer feel properly care for”, adding that staff were “demoralised and worried about their jobs”. Newmark, a former chair of AJEX House Friendship Association, had a reply this week from Jewish Choice

in Wembley, formerly Edinburgh House. The organisation read Leon’s letter in last week’s Jewish News and offered him and any other disgruntled residents places in their complex, which includes a residential care home

and independent living flats. “We have some vacant flats available on our site that may be of interest to you and others who are over 60, yet able Jewish singles or couples in your block,” wrote Jewish Choice chief executive Paula Peake. Edinburgh House started life in 1747 as the Beth Holim in the Mile End Road, set up by the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community of England for medical care of the community’s poor. It was one of the UK’s first charities and the first hospital in Europe to offer affordable professional care combined with a Jewish way of life.

Eurovision in Tel Aviv / World News

Flagging support for Madge’s stunt Madonna sparked controversy during her Eurovision Song Contest performance on Sunday when her dancers displayed Israeli and Palestinian flags. The pop star, 60, had defied calls from anti-Israel activists to cancel the show in Tel Aviv, saying beforehand she wanted to create “a new path toward peace”. During her performance at the final, which was won by the Netherlands, two of Madonna’s backing dancers were seen wearing Israel and Palestine flags on their backs. A song contest spokesperson said: “In the live broadcast of the final, two of Madonna’s dancers briefly displayed the Israeli and Palestinian flags on the back of their outfits. “This element of the performance was not part of the rehearsals which had been cleared with the EBU and the Host Broadcaster, KAN. The Eurovision Song Contest is a non-political event and Madonna had been made aware of this.” Madonna had taken to the stage flanked by 30 dancers dressed as monks. The Queen of Pop appeared at the top of a flight of steps, dressed in a cape and hood and wearing a metal breastplate. Brandishing a cross, she stepped slowly towards the crowd at the

Iceland is set to face punitive action from Eurovision producers after the national act hoisted several Palestine flags during the live finals on Saturday night, in front of a TV audience of 200 million. The band Hatari, whose song was called Hatrið mun Sigra (Hate will Prevail), is comprised of anti-capitalists who made a series of controversial political statements about the Middle East even before they flew to Israel. Organisers say the event is non-political and banned

any reference to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, but Hatari replied by saying that “hosting [the competition] in a country that’s scarred by conflict is political”. Hatari had made their intentions clear, at one point challenging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to a traditional Icelandic wrestling match. After they landed, band members toured Palestinian areas in the West Bank and wrote about Israel’s “apartheid” system.

RABBI URGES EXTRA TIME FOR SHABBAT Israel’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi called on Jews to extend by 20 minutes the time they observe Shabbat to protest its violation during Eurovision. “This coming Saturday there will be a massive desecration of Shabbat for all the world to see,” Rabbi David Lau said in a filmed address Thursday. “Let us extend the sanctity of Shabbat.” Lau asked his listeners to begin observing Shabbat 10 minutes ahead of its beginning on Friday evening and another 10 minutes after it ends on Saturday night.

LGBT GROUP GETS PRESENTER’S FEE An Israeli co-presenter of Eurovision has said he will donate his presenting fee to a charity working with Israeli youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ+). Assi Azar, who is gay, donated his £23,000 salary to Israeli Gay Youth (IGY) which he said did “holy work” across Israel. “To host the Eurovision for money is definitely something that I won’t do,” he said. “It’s for my soul and to represent the country with respect.”

RESTITUTION ‘A HITLER VICTORY’ The Polish prime minister has been condemned for reportedly saying that to give property restitution to Polish Jews would be tantamount to “Hitler’s posthumous victory”. According to the Polish news portal money.pl, speaking last Friday about the idea of Poland granting compensation, Mateusz Morawiecki said: “If someone says Poland is to pay any compensation to anyone, we say: we do not agree to it. “If this terrible injustice will ever happen – when the executioner and victim roles were reversed – it would be Hitler’s posthumous victory,” he reportedly added, saying it was Poles who deserved compensation for the Second World War. Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress has asked for a full explanation of Morawiecki’s remarks, saying that, if genuine, they were “reprehensible and must be thoroughly rejected”. He added: “As a longtime friend of Poland and

Polish politician Konrad Berkowicz puts a kippah on rival Anna Krupka

the Polish people, I call upon Prime Minister Morawiecki to either deny or retract this deeply offensive and utterly incomprehensible statement.” The war of words is part of a row between Warsaw and the Jewish world, in which Poland has repeatedly sought

to present itself as a Nazi victim of the as much as the millions of Jews. Last year, Poland passed a law that made it illegal to accuse the Polish nation or state of complicity in Nazi German war crimes, particularly referring to “Polish” death camps – although

CHAREDIM WERE MISSIONARIES A married couple in Chicago has been identified as missionaries despite dressing, living and working as Orthodox Jews. Neither David nor Rivkah Costello is Jewish, and they moved in to the predominantly Charedi neighbourhood West Rogers Park several months ago. But their plan to convert their neighbours was foiled when a visitor from New York, recognised the Costellos – who had, apparently, tried the same trick in Brooklyn last year. He told Chicago’s Rabbi Levi Notik, who approached the couple. Notik said the Costellos had admitted that they were “on a mission to specifically live among the frum community and actively influence others”.

Lauder Diplomat’s son joins Babi Yar centre sets record straight board

World Jewish Congress boss Ronald Lauder has joined the board of the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Centre. Other board members include German Khan, deputy chair of the BYHMC Supervisory Board, former director-general of UNESCO Irina Bokova, former world boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, former Polish President, Aleksander Kwaśniewski and businessman Mikhail Fridman. Lauder said it was a great honour to join the board for oversight of “what will be an extremely moving Holocaust memorial for central and eastern Europe”.

The son of wartime Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara has addressed global audiences about his father’s work in saving Jews by issuing thousands of lifesaving visas in Lithuania. But speaking at a recent Limmud FSU event in Minsk, Belarus, Nobuki Sugihara downplayed some of the stories about his father (pictured), in whose name a museum opened in Japan in 2000. There is also a Sugihara museum in Kaunas, Lithuania. Nobuki, 70, told the JTA that “there are inaccuracies in circulation about what my

father had done. I started speaking just to set the record straight on those embellishments”. One such story is that his father wrote visas on the train on which he left for Germany after being expelled from his post in Lithuania. Sugihara supposedly “threw the signed visas” through a train window. Both Sugihara museums say it happened. But the consul’s son said it “never happened”. At most, he suggested: “Maybe, maybe he gave three or four visas at the hotel” just before his departure.

Israel politician Yair Lapid makes a point of doing so. In this latest clash, Lauder said Poland’s failure to confront appropriately the issue of restitution was “especially troubling… Successive Polish governments have steadfastly refused to recognise the material losses of Polish Jewry and have treated their homes and other property as the spoils of war – and individual Poles and Polish institutions have profiteered from these assets for more than seven decades.” The row has played out against a TV election debate in the Polish city of Kielce, in which far-right politician Konrad Berkowicz put a kippah on the head of Anna Krupka, from Morawiecki’s Law and Justice party’s saying her party “kneels to the Jews”. Last week, Poland cancelled a visit by Israeli officials, who they said had intended to raise the issue of Holocaust restitution during the scheduled bilateral talks.

Germany says BDS is Jew-hate Germany’s parliament has defined the anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign as antisemitic. Although not binding, the cross-party resolution said: “The argumentation patterns and methods used by the BDS movement are antisemitic.” It was submitted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party, their Social Democrat coalition partners, as well as the Greens and Free Democrats. The motion called on government bodies to stop funding or backing any groups that questioned Israel’s right to exist. The World Jewish Congress said it was “a moral gesture worthy of emulation”.

Sharansky film a hit at Washington fest A new film, From Slavery to Freedom, which tells the story of Soviet refuseniks through the lens of Natan Sharansky’s biography, was shown at the Washington Jewish Film Festival this week. In 1977, Sharansky, arguably the most famous Soviet Jewish human rights activist, was arrested on charges of spying for the US, treason, and anti-Soviet agitation. He spent nine years in prison before taking part in a prisoner exchange – and immediately emigrated to Israel, where he was reunited with his wife, Avital, who had spent years campaigning for his release. The film, internationally supported by the Genesis Philanthropy Group, recreates a Soviet era during which there was an overwhelming sense of fear and insecurity. Sharansky became a politician in Israel and then chair of the Jewish Agency, before being succeeded last year by the former Labour Party leader Isaac Herzog.

Sharansky himself took part in a Q&A session after the screening, together with Israel’s Ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer.

Holocaust survivor and her US army rescuer in emotional reunion A Holocaust survivor welcomed a US Army veteran to her suburban Detroit home on Monday, and thanked him for taking part in the 1945 liberation of the German concentration camp where she had been held. Sophie Tajch Klisman, 89, greeted Doug Harvey, now 95, with a hug and thanked him for taking part in the liberation of the Salzwedel camp, telling him: “You gave me my life.” Harvey said he could not take credit “for the entire 15,000 guys” in his 84th Infantry Division, but Mrs Klisman replied: “But you were one of them ... and I’m very fortunate to meet you.” Klisman recalled: “They rolled in with tanks and came and opened the gates. And they were

telling us: ‘The war is over. You are free, you survived’. “So, that kind of feeling. We were barely alive. I mean, we were all like skeletons. A lot of the soldiers who looked at us, they cried.” Harvey, who lives near Klisman, learned about her when he read a story in the Detroit News about her plan to return to Poland and Israel as part of the ‘From Holocaust to Independence’ mission of the Friends of the Israel Defence Forces. The two met in person after Klisman returned from the trip last week. In addition to Salzwedel, Klisman, along with her sister Felicia, survived the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps.

Any public figure who is genuinely concerned about the rise of Jewhatred in this country would advise voters not to touch Labour with a barge-pole until it exorcises its demon.

When Palestinians instinctively use the word ‘Jew’ for ‘Israeli’ they are accused of antisemitism. But when Israelis use the word ‘Jew’ as a substitute for ‘Israeli’, there isn’t outrage. Why not?

Editorial comment and letters

BBC MIGHT HAVE FALLEN FOUL OF IHRA DEFINITION You report (Jewish News, 16 May) that “The BBC has defended its translation of the Arabic word Yehudi as Israeli, in the subtitles in at least five instances, in its documentary, One Day in Gaza. It might have feared that translating accurately what Bader Saleh said in Arabic as they encourage you to rip a Jew’s head off might have been deemed Islamophobic, something the BBC would want to avoid at all costs. Its claim that its version ‘is both accurate and true to the speakers’ intentions’ demonstrates clearly that it finds the distinction between Jews and Israelis insignificant, which would itself appear to fall foul of the IHRA definition of antisemitism.

Dear Ambassador to the UK I’d like to congratulate your son – Hatari’s drummer Einar – for being such a polite and intelligent young man. Your boy knows how to behave well as a guest in someone else’s country, taking their hospitality and then insulting them. Is it Icelandic tradition to spit in someone’s face in this way? Your child’s willingness to fall for propaganda without wanting to hear another narrative, shows a remarkable single mindedness. And his courage in waving that Palestinian scarf leaves me speechless and full of admiration. Waving an Israeli or LGBT flag in Gaza would really show just how truly courageous he is. He is obviously a proud Icelander, an inheritor of your country’s traditional antisemitism. For instance, in 1938, when the country was still an autonomous territory under Danish trusteeship, it legislated

BREXIT NIGHTMARE HAS PUT CORBYN IN PRIME POSITION Labour is ever more obsessed with denying Israel’s right to exist. The thought of Jeremy Corbyn who for a £3 special offer initiation fee has attracted around him many a like-minded persons, which

What works well for us should work for others CLAUDIA MENDOZA

DIRECTOR OF POLICY & PUBLIC AFFAIRS, JEWISH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

P

ublic attitudes and awareness towards mental health have changed significantly over the years. This is in no small part owing to the fact there has been a sea change in the way mental health is addressed. From government to charities to celebrities drawing attention to the issue, the taboo is slowly being eroded. This is true in our own community, where more people are coming forward to talk about their own experiences. Indeed, the Community Wellbeing Task Force – a Jewish Leadership Council (JLC)-led initiative – was set up to address the increasing mental health challenges facing Jewish children and young people today. The Community Wellbeing Project is a three-year pilot scheme stemming from the advice of an expert panel and commissioned research, which identified that a positive approach to mental health and well-

being requires an educated partnership between school staff, parents/carers and students. Wellbeing practitioners have been recruited in five pilot schools in London and Manchester to build on existing programmes, run new evidencebased initiatives and work together to share best practices. The practitioner will support the school in the development and delivery of its whole school approach to emotional wellbeing. Having a mental health condition increases your chances of being lonely, but loneliness – which we tend to associate with older people – can affect anyone. It does not discriminate when it comes to age or background. Even if you are surrounded by colleagues, friends and family, you can still be affected by loneliness. The effects can be as detrimental on a person’s health as that of many physical health conditions. The wonderful thing about being part of a community is the sense of belonging and structure it provides. Indeed, Judaism as a religion offers much-needed order in an increasingly chaotic world. There are practices around every life event, helping us to navigate our way from cradle to grave, and the laws around Shabbat

WE WANT TO BE SEEN AS A COMMUNITY THAT CAN OFFER BEST PRACTICE provide tranquillity after a working week. At the end of last year, the prime minister launched the government’s loneliness strategy, which confirmed that all GPs in England will be able to refer patients experiencing loneliness to community activities and voluntary services by 2023. This is known as ‘social prescribing’ and will allow GPs to direct patients to community workers offering tailored support to help them improve their health and wellbeing, instead of defaulting to medicine. The Jewish community has much to offer when it comes to social prescribing. Of our 35 members, many have programmes aimed at tackling loneliness. This week, the JLC facili-

tated a meeting between Jewish Care, Jami, and Mims Davies MP in her capacity as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Sport and Civil Society. In this role, she has responsibility for the cross-government work on loneliness and we were able to share some of Jewish Care and Jami’s work, as well as some of that done by our other member organisations. The Nightingale House-based Apples and Honey nursery, for example, is the UK’s first nursery to be based at a care home, allowing older people to take part in activities, such as baking and singing, with children. The benefits of intergenerational activities go far beyond alleviating loneliness, and it is a huge success. As with all our engagement with government, we want to be seen as a community that can offer best practice and innovation on issues affecting society at large. Our community faces unique challenges, but most of the challenges we face are faced by many outside the community. Being part of a community allows us to problem solve together, but we want to make sure the things that work for us can also work for others.

W

hile (nearly) everyone bathes in the post-Eurovision euphoria of a TV extravaganza from Tel Aviv, something troubling is oozing out of the political establishment in Jerusalem. The prime minister (pictured with Israeli Eurovision star Netta), it may have escaped attention, is facing three serious charges of alleged fraud and corruption. Among the jaw-dropping details in the indictment assembled by Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit are the handing over, to Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara, of boxes of cigars and cases of champagne, together with jewellery by the prime minister’s billionaire friend, Arnon Milchan. This was not just a few cigars or the occasional bottle of fizz. This was, according to the Attorney-General, something of a regular supply line, amounting to thousands of shekels in equivalent value. Allegedly, the couple received gifts amounting to $195,000 (£153,000), with $130,00 worth of cigars, champagne and jewellery from Milchan, and $75,000 worth of cigars and champagne from another billionaire

acquaintance, the Australian media tycoon James Packer. More details emerged on Sunday of claims made by the Netanyahus on Packer, including expensive overcoats, shaving equipment sent with Packer’s driver so the prime minister could be properly groomed for the funeral of Shimon Peres, a second yacht commissioned so older son Yair Netanyahu could accompany his parents on a trip… the list goes on, damning in its tacky, petty, alleged greed. Netanyahu denies all charges announced against him, much of which he has denounced as a “leftist plot”. This is all perfectly fair and one would expect anyone

facing such serious charges to engage lawyers and fight the damning allegations in court. But Netanyahu – unlike his predecessor, Ehud Olmert, who resigned as prime minister in order to fight corruption charges and was found guilty – is refusing to take this path. Instead, he is attempting to push through an immunity law which he is now trying to market to Knesset members from his own party. He has more time to sell it now that Israel’s Attorney General has announced he’s ready to delay indictment until October. The proposed law – which he denied, during the election campaign last month that he was considering – would protect him

YET MORE DETAILS EMERGED THIS WEEK OF CLAIMS AGAINST THE NETANYAHUS – DAMNING IN THEIR ALLEGED GREED

from prosecution while in office. And his reasoning for this, he has told Likud MKs: “The citizens of Israel deserve a full-time prime minister. I’ll deal with my legal issues when I have completed my time [as prime minister]”. But that, of course, could be years away. Although the Netanyahus have repeatedly insisted there is a vendetta against the family, it is surely not acceptable to have a prime minister ringfenced and placing himself above the law. To their credit, although painfully slowly, appalled Likudniks – including the deeply honourable and former longtime MK Benny Begin – have begun to challenge Netanyahu’s response. Begin told Israel Radio: “The prime minister hiding behind the shield of immunity as a Knesset Member, with or without legislative changes, is a corrupt act… the prime minister intends to misuse his leadership for personal gain, and he is dragging others down with him.” If the prime minister has nothing to hide, he does not need an immunity law. Let him defend himself and his family in court. And let him not squander all the current international goodwill directed towards Israel. It, and we, need all the friends we can get.

BDS is antisemitic, misguided, dishonest JONATHAN GOLDSTEIN CHAIR, JEWISH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

T

hose of us watching the Eurovision Song Contest last week would have felt a sense of pride and familiarity as Israel’s landmarks were paraded. From the liveliness of Tel Aviv beach to the sanctity of Jerusalem, to the beauty of the Baha’i gardens, we were reminded of the diversity of Israel both in landscape and in population. Where else in the Middle East can we see pride flags, Orthodox Jews and veiled women living alongside each other? I watched with a mixture of bemusement and anger as Iceland’s Eurovision act waved Palestinian flags during the live broadcast. If this was meant to signal support for the BDS Movement, what were they doing in Israel, staying in Israeli hotels, spending money in Israel? But that is the crux of the Movement – misguided, hypocritical and dishonest. Their stunt was even rejected by Palestinian Campaign For The Academic And

Cultural Boycott Of Israel (PACBI), which had previously demanded that all acts pull out of the event. They called their stunt a fig-leaf gesture. One wonders where else in the Middle East they could perform on stage in bondage. For some people, Israel – the world’s only Jewish state – is unique among the nations and seen as a pariah worthy of being boycotted. To be sure, the motivation of the BDS Movement is not peace, but opposition to Israel’s existence. Its formal goals include a full Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank and the “right of return” for Palestinian refugees and their descendants to pre 1967 Israel. Its founders reject a negotiated two-state solution and Israel’s right to exist as the nation state of the Jewish people. In other words, for the Movement, justice is Israel ceasing to exist as a Jewish state, not the widely accepted two state solution which offers two states for two peoples. As a recent paper written by Bicom concludes: “The goals of the BDS Movement have been largely rejected as a construc-

ANYONE ENGAGED IN THE BOYCOTT MOVEMENT IS NAIVE OR WILFULLY MISGUIDED tive paradigm for resolving the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.”. Indeed, anyone who engages with the movement as a means to end the conflict is naïve or wilfully misguided. The duplicity of the movement aside, far too often the BDS Movement has strayed into overtly antisemitic activity. As David Hirsh details in a report on this, “old antisemitic tropes, including blood libel and conspiracy, have a tendency to emerge, recycled, out of the boycott movement”. I recall when in 2014, amid fear of protest, Sainsbury’s removed all kosher food off its shelves. A staff member defended the

decision to remove the items, which had been made in the UK and Poland, saying “we support free Gaza.” In the same year, the Tricycle Theatre refused to host the UK Jewish Film Festival because of a small grant from the Israeli embassy. There are sadly many more examples of where BDS activity becomes overtly antisemitic. All this makes the motion passed in Germany’s parliament last week denouncing BDS even timelier. The motion was submitted by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Conservatives, their Social Democrat coalition partners, the Greens and Free Democrats and reads that “the argumentation patterns and methods used by the BDS movement are antisemitic”. The motion pledges to reject all financial support for BDS, stating that it is reminiscent of the Nazi campaign against Jews under Hitler. This is a brave and honourable move and it is why the President of the Board of Deputies and I have written to Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt to ask that the UK follow suit.

Heard the one about the

JEW AND THE MUSLIM? Ashley Blaker and Imran Yusuf’s pairing makes a unique comedy show, discovers Jenni Frazer

W

hen Liverpool FC achieved their “miracle” win over Barcelona earlier this month, there was no doubt in Imran Yusuf ’s mind as to where he should be. The avid Liverpool fan and hugely popular stand-up comic made his way to the home of his friend Ashley Blaker, an equally besotted Liverpool supporter and himself a renowned comedian. What they needed – in fact, what the world needed – was a double selfie of the two of them, proudly wearing their Liverpool red shirts. The obvious affection between the two men, Blaker – an Orthodox Jew – and Yusuf – a knowledgeable Muslim – has led to a remarkable and probably unique stage pairing for their comedy show, Prophet Sharing,, which is currently touring the UK. How did they meet? “I was a TV and radio producer,” says Blaker, “and I think I booked Imran for one of my shows. I’ve known him about eight years or so.” Yes, says Yusuf, it was after appearing on one of Blaker’s shows that they discovered their mutual passion for Liverpool FC. Gradually, this unlikely pair became good friends. Last summer Blaker did a show at the Edinburgh Festival called Observant Jew,, and Yusuf went to see it. “After the show, we were talking and Ashley came up with this proposal that we should do a tour together. I thought, what a great opportunity.” Both men have had their own successful BBC shows, so it was a natural pairing. Blaker has been doing solo stand-up comedy for a number of years and in a previous interview was adamant that he wouldn’t work with other Jewish comedians. So has he broken a rule to work with a Muslim comedian? No, insists Blaker. “I said I would never do ‘mixed bill’ stuff where the audience comes and sees five or six different acts. This is still like a solo show – we each do stuff on our own and then we have half an hour together, which is really great fun.”

Prophet share: Ashley Blaker and Imran Yusuf

The joy of the two of them together is that it is entirely driven by the audience, who have been asked to fill in a questionnaire before the show, and Blaker and Yusuf then riff off each other, each bringing their own, unscripted views to the stage. “We designed the show together,” says Blaker. “We’re each very aware of what we are doing, and how that marries up.” Yusuf, who has been a full-time comedy performer for 14 years, comes from an Indian Muslim family who were chased out of East Africa by Idi Amin. He was born in Mombasa, Kenya, and was brought up near Hackney Fields, before moving to Harrow. Blaker was a television producer and writer most associBritain, before going it ated with the hit comedy, Little Britain alone on a very carefully thought-out comedy path. He doesn’t do clubs and certainly won’t do anything which would conflict with his Orthodox beliefs. Of his friend’s comedy, Blaker describes it as “very warm, not cruel – audiences really like him”. Meanwhile, Yusuf believes the pair have much in common: “We are both quite learned about our religion. I’ve read the Koran – in English – twice through, cover to cover and Gita. I’m about to start on the [Hinduism’s] Bhaghavad Gita Tanach [the Hebrew Bible]. Rabbi Laura JannerKlausner gave me a copy.” In fact, says Yusuf, his ambition is to read every major religious book in the world. “Most of us don’t study our own religious books enough, but I want to try.” Stand-up, says Blaker, “is not easy. But we know how to do it and what works with an audience”. For him, it’s an opportunity to find out the similarities between Judaism and Islam, asking Yusuf on stage if his imam is anything like Blaker’s rabbi. Both men believe that, particularly with the rise in antisemitism and Islamophobia, “there couldn’t be a better time to do this show”. Blaker says the lesson he draws from it is “that we are stronger together than apart”. Yusuf, for his part, says there is a sometimes “brutal journey” between Jews and Muslims, but that “we thrive by being tolerant – that’s the trajectory we are on”.  Prophet Sharing is currently touring UK venues until 25 June, ending at JW3. A BLAST from the

PAST!

Francine Wolfisz speaks to Stephen Poliakoff about his tense Cold War drama, Summer of Rockets, inspired by events from his childhood

T

he idea that Stephen Poliakoff’s Russian-born father was a Communist spy – and indeed one who extracted information from then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill – was not only unbelievable, but one that never fails to make the acclaimed screenwriter chortle at the mere thought. “It’s totally astonishing,” he grins. “Dad was the least likely person involved in spying. He was a huge Anglophile and enormously in love with everything English. The idea of him bugging the Cabinet war rooms was extraordinary. I think he would have found such an accusation outrageous.” Alexander Poliakoff, together with his father, Joseph, invented the pager and ran a firm that manufactured hearing aids, with a host of clients that included Churchill. But when MI5 head Roger Hollis harboured suspicions the pair had turned the premier’s hearing aid into a covert bugging device, they were promptly denied all access to 10 Downing Street. Only years later, when Hollis’ memorandums on the matter became declassified, did Poliakoff learn the truth about why his father’s visits to Churchill were stopped. The incredible story is just one of several real-life incidents from which Poliakoff has drawn for his semi-autobiographical drama, Summer of Rockets, which began last night on BBC2. SEDRA Behar BY RABBI SHAUL ROSENBLATT This week’s portion talks about the Jubilee year. It’s a beautiful concept: “And you shall proclaim freedom throughout the land.” In effect, it is a reboot of the country’s entire financial system once every 50 years. In a world of greed and selfinterest, the Jubilee would have been an incredible equaliser. There are many aspects to this, but I will pick just one of the laws to illustrate. Every 50th year, all property returns to its original owners. When the Jewish People entered the Land of Israel, everyone was given a portion of land as an eternal inheritance. If he fell on hard times, he could sell his land, but not the freehold. All he could do was lease his land out until the next Jubilee, when it would return to him. There are downsides to this, but there was no such thing as the peasants who own nothing and the lords who own all the land taking advantage of them. For many years, in Europe (and beyond), land ownership defined whether you had power or not. But in Jewish law, this cannot be. No matter how much land you amass, come the Jubilee, the peasant will own just as much as you do. I don’t believe that this would undermine human industry. There are many ways to amass wealth other than land acquisition. However, it does prevent, from the very outset, the inequality that plagued humanity for so many years.  Rabbi Rosenblatt founded Aish UK in 1993 and

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about… The Jeremy Kyle Show? BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL The Jeremy Kyle Show has been cancelled by ITV after a participant killed himself when he failed a polygraph test regarding his relationship with his girlfriend. So, what does the Torah say about this? Ahitophel, an adviser to King David’s rebellious son Absalom, took his life when he heard that his advice to the monarch was not applied. However, the rabbis severely criticise him, taking Ahitophel as the prime example in matters relating to the prohibition of suicide. Since the Jeremy Kyle Show cancellation story broke, suggestions have been made that the poor participant took his own life not solely because he had failed the test and that there were other reasons at play.

Looking at the polygraph test, in Judaism, unless there are two witnesses who come before a Beth Din, evidence is usually not accepted as conclusive. On the face of it, an implement such

THE NATURE OF THE SHOW IS QUESTIONABLE BECAUSE PEOPLE’S LIVES ARE TORN APART

as a lie-detector machine would not be safe for halachic use. The nature of the Jeremy Kyle Show is also questionable as to whether people’s private lives should be pulled apart in public. If there is absolutely no other way to bring a person to account, then it is a useful forum, as was the case when Joshua identified Achan – who had been accused of secretly pillaging spoils from the city of Jericho – before all of Israel. As for competing accusations, swearing and the need for on-site security, all of which were a common feature of the show, Proverbs counsel that the Torah’s ways are ways of peace. The safety of methods used to extract the truth is essential, as our rabbis warn that no man should incriminate himself. Mediation and reconciliation, not proverbial pitch battles, should always be the goal.  Rabbi Abel serves Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation and is padre to HM Armed Forces

Bible Says What?

How can we ensure a ‘kosher’ Brexit?

‘We were slaves in the Land of Israel’ BY RABBI MARK GOLDSMITH Every Pesach, Jews celebrate their liberation from slavery in Egypt, avadim hayinu, we were slaves – in the past tense. Freedom from slavery suffuses our liturgy. When we recite the Hallel psalms at festivals and new moons, we say that we are now servants only of God (Psalms 113:1). So it comes as a shock to see in Torah portions and the Bible, that it is clear Jews owned each other as slaves in the Land of Israel. Towards the end of the Book of Leviticus (25:39), it is clear that Jews did serve each other as avadim, but for a limited time period of no more than seven years. Back in the Book of Exodus (21:6), the same time restriction is given, but also there is provision made for a Jew to stay as a slave for life if he elects to. What was going on? A clue comes from the proximity of these laws to those regarding extreme poverty and the lending of money without interest

to those in dire straits. You became a slave if you had no other way of paying your debts. You lost your right to payment for your labour, lost your right to live where you wished and became part of the household of your ‘master’. At least you would be fed and sheltered. In most Bible translations, the word eved is translated as ‘servant’ when it applies to a Jew and ‘slave’ when it applies to a non-Jew – but the Hebrew word is the same. Today, the idea that anyone could be enslaved is abhorrent, even though modern slavery exists the world over. What we find in the Bible is a first attempt to make slavery more humane, at least for those who are of your own people.  Formerly rabbi at Alyth Synagogue, Mark Goldsmith has been appointed Senior Rabbi of Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue from this summer

BY RABBI SANDRA KVIAT As you read this article, voting will have begun for the European Elections while, at the same time, Prime Minister Theresa May is preparing one final push to get her Brexit deal through parliament. But is there a Jewish take on this? You bet there is. Indeed what is happening with Brexit crosses into many of the values and aspects of our faith. You could look at the Jewish view on the ethics of negotiation, whether one can change one’s mind and the laws of divorce proceedings. Or you may wish to investigate what the Torah and Talmud say about taking the worries and issues of minority communities into consideration or how we must never level allow fear or anger to run what we do. But, for me, what will ultimately make Brexit ‘kosher’ is if it lives up to the Jewish principle of consensus.

This is best illustrated by the story of Rabban Gamliel who, after the destruction of the Second Temple, tried to impose an authoritarian regime to maintain order and unity in his role as the Nasi (president) of the Sanhedrin (rabbinic assembly) in Yavne. He did everything he could to enhance his own authority, often with severity, regularly clashing with other rabbis and most notably humiliating Rabbi Yehoshua three times. Despite coming from a long line of leaders, and being a descendant of King David, Rabban Gamliel was deposed by his peers for

becoming too far removed from the people and abusing his personal power. There is a happy ending though when, some time later, Rabban Gamliel realises his mistakes and vows to learn from them, sincerely apologies to Rabbi Yehoshua and is reinstated to share the title of Nasi with his successor Rabbi Elazar. To make a success of Brexit, our leaders will need to show the humility and wisdom of the latter Rabban Gamliel and not the autocratic and oppressive instincts of his earlier self. If we want a ‘kosher’ exit from the European Union, in line with Jewish values, then our leaders and their counterparts across the water must do their very best to listen to each other and reach a fair and just consensus.

ADAM SHELLEY ACCOUNTANT

SOBELL RHODES Dear Adam I run a small business and provide private medical insurance for my team. Do I need to declare this to HMRC? Sienna Dear Sienna Employers who provide taxable benefits in kind to their employees are required to declare these to HMRC annually. Any benefits provided during the year ending 5 April 2019 should be declared on form P11D by 6 July 2019. In addition to any tax that your employees will need to pay on the benefits, your business will be liable to Class 1A National Insurance Contributions at the rate of 13.8 percent, payable by 19 July 2019. You could consider payrolling benefits in the future.

ACE LIFESTYLE Dear Anna and Charlotte I’ve recently joined the gym in the hope of losing some weight. I am exercising three times a week, but my weight remains the same. Please could you let me know where am I going wrong? Sharon

Dear Sharon Thank you for your question, – it’s one we get asked a lot, so you’re not alone. People automatically think that exercising (more) is the only way to lose weight. Although exercising has amazing health benefits, the truth is that you cannot out-train a bad diet. The first thing we would recommend is having a look at your food intake: are you eating more than your body requires? Our ace TRANSFORM programme helps our clients focus on eating less and moving more to achieve the best results. If you are doing lots of cardio in the gym, then you will feel hungrier and will eat

Tax free benefits While benefits in kind, such as private medical insurance, company cars and gym memberships, are taxable benefits and should be reported on form P11D, there are several benefits that can be provided to employees’ tax free. These include interest free loans of up to £10,000, business mileage allowances, eye tests, flu jabs, provision of parking spaces near to work and trivial benefits. These benefits do not need to be notified to HMRC. Trivial Benefits Trivial benefits are small gifts of up to £50 each that are given in recognition of a personal event rather than a reward for work, such as birthdays, anniversaries, birth of children or religious holidays. The gift must not be cash, but can include items such as store vouchers, theatre tickets, driving lessons if the company bears the cost of them direct. For employees, the only limit to the number of gifts is the number of personal events you can think of. However, for directors, a maximum of £300 can be provided during each year. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further advice.

more, which will undo all the hard work you have put in. In the gym, make sure you do weight training and have a programme rather than float from exercise to exercise. Another great way to ensure you’re keeping within your calorie deficit is by increasing your NEAT (non exercise activity thermogenesis), which you can do by moving more throughout the day. That’s why we recommend all our ace TRANSFORM clients to do a minimum of 10,000 steps per day on top of their exercise. Dear Katy I hated attending events, but soon learned some clever techniques to overcome shyness and gain confidence. But I found myself enjoying them so much that I ran my own network, the Oyster Club, for 10 years. Keep in mind that unlike social events, you’re representing your business; and that gives reason enough for being there. Try as many events as possible before committing to signing up as a member. Your success is determined before you even walk in through the door. Get confident before you go! If you’re tired, perk yourself up with a brisk walk and a cup of coffee or, if you’re hungry, grab

a snack. Remember that only you have control over your own feelings. Go in, find the bathroom and look yourself in the mirror. Remind yourself why you are there. Stand in a power pose and breathe deeply. Forget about selling directly to the people at the meeting. Clearly explain to others what you do so that they can repeat your offering in order to tell someone else. Follow up when you say you will and don’t scatter your cards like confetti. It’s better to meet three to five people with whom you take time to reconnect than leave your card with 20 you will not.
