News / European Elections

It’s a ‘matzah meal’ Brexit Smoked salmon business owner turned Brexit Party MEP Lance Forman this week accused Theresa May of making a “matzah meal” out of the decision to leave the EU,

writes Mathilde Frot. One of the two Brexit Party MEPs for London elected, Forman told Jewish News: “I was expecting I would get the position. I thought London

would get two Brexit Party MEPs, so I would have been disappointed if I hadn’t got it.” “[My family] were delighted for me. What they and friends said was they felt very proud of me for putting my head above the parapet,” he added. Forman said he would campaign in favour of Brexit at home and vote against legislation proposed by the European Commission in Brussels. “What the Brexit Party has done is they already made a significant impact on British parties […] First of all the prime minister resigned. “Second, many of the candidates standing are now saying they will put no deal back on the table. “Theresa May has made a matzah meal of Brexit – she has made a complete mess of it.” Forman also expressed concern about the rise of extremist parties in Europe

and suggested that the Jewish community had much to gain from Brexit. “I want to let the Jewish community know that the Brexit Party is nothing to be afraid of. We should welcome it,” he said. Other Jewish MEP candidates represented swathes of political parties and leanings. The Brexit Party’s Simon Marcus and Graham Shore both campaigned in favour of leaving the EU, but failed

to secure seats. At the opposite end of the political spectrum, Change UK’s Karen Newman, who pushed for a second referendum, did not secure a seat either. Meanwhile Simon Gouldman, who stood for the Animal Welfare Party in London, did not pick up a seat either. “We came in eighth place on a minimal budget ahead of UKIP in spite of all the dominance of Brexit and we consider that a tre-

mendous victory,” he said. In the south east, both the Green Party’s Elise Benjamin, former Lord Mayor of Oxford, and the Liberal Democrat candidate Ruvi Ziegler, an associate professor at the University of Reading, failed to grab seats. In the North West, Conservative councillor Rabbi Arnold Saunders failed to pick up a seat.  Editorial comment, p18

Charedim accused of backing Robinson bid The leaders of Manchester’s Jewish community have accused Charedi Jews in London of supporting Tommy Robinson’s failed efforts to become a Member of the European Parliament in the north-west. The anti-Islam candidate, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, ran as an independent, but won just 2.2 percent of the vote. His experience reflected that of other far-right candidates across Europe, who generally fared worse than expected. However, evidence of Charedi Jewish support for Robinson’s candidacy left the leadership of Greater Manchester’s Jewish Representative Council (JRC) fuming. “On Wednesday, a leaflet was distributed to Jewish households in north Manchester encouraging them to vote for Robinson,” it said in a statement. “The leaflet was produced by members of the Charedi community.” The JRC described Robinson as “openly racist, attacking the immigrant community and in particular Muslims” and said he was “not welcome in our city”. It said: “He wraps himself in the Israeli flag and a tiny number of Jewish people believe that this indicates support for the Jewish community and for Israel. This is not accurate and is used as a ploy to garner support for his beliefs.” The JRC added: “We will not accept the support of racists using symbols designed to inflame tensions between Muslims and Jews. We are shocked that in living memory of the Holocaust, where our people and others were butchered in the name of a racist ideology, that any Jews can

support fascism and racism.” Robinson’s ballot box failure stood in stark contrast to that of Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, as nationalists played on fears of immigration and loss of sovereignty to make gains in countries such as France, Poland, Italy, Belgium and Hungary. A week before the vote, senior representatives of 11 nationalist and/or far-right parties met in Milan, rallying alongside Matteo Salvini, Italy’s anti-immigration interior minister and leader of the Northern League, to an audience of 25,000. At the rally, the Dutch anti-Islam activist Geert Wilders said: “We must secure the future of our land and children.” Commentators said this seemed to mimic the language of a popular white nationalist phrase known as the ‘14 Words’. This is a reference to the 14-word slogan of David Lane, a late white supremacist leader, who said: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” The Anti-Defamation League said it reflects the white supremacist worldview “that unless immediate action is taken, the white race is doomed to extinction by an alleged ‘rising tide of colour’ purportedly controlled and Tommy manipulated Robinson by Jews”.

EHRC probe / News NEWS IN BRIEF

COUNCIL VICE-CHAIR ‘SORRY’ OVER POSTS The vice-chair of Middlesbrough Council has said he is “truly sorry” for sending antisemitic posts referencing conspiracy theorist David Icke and the Rothschild family. Independent Councillor Lee Garvey told JN: “I am truly sorry the comments have caused offence. I didn’t realise how they could be taken because they don’t come from an antisemitic place.” Garvey suggested people read Icke and, in a 2015 post regarding stopping the demonisation of Jews, tweeted: “Israel is doing to Palestine what they suffered at the hands of the Nazis.”

COUNCILLOR SENDS DOSSIER TO EHRC A councillor in Cornwall has sent a dossier of antisemitic content allegedly shared by 24 Labour members to the equalities watchdog, local media reports. Independent Councillor for Penzance East, Tim Dwelly (ex-leader of the local Labour group) claims he sent the Equalities and Human Right Commission (EHRC) evidence of antisemitic social media posts and comments, Cornwall Live reported. He said the posts, including Holocaust denial videos, promote Jew-hate.

‘Hang your head in shame’ The community this week welcomed news that the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has launched a formal investigation into whether the Labour Party “unlawfully discriminated against, harassed or victimised people because they are Jewish”. The EHRC said it had contacted Labour after receiving a “number of complaints” about allegations of antisemitism within the party, and had “carefully considered” its response before opening the probe. It added that the investigation would seek to determine whether “unlawful acts have been committed by the Party and/or its employees and/or its agents” and if the party has “responded to complaints of unlawful acts in a lawful, efficient and effective manner”. Labour MP Margaret Hodge said it was “unforgivable” for Jeremy Corbyn to have “led [the party] down this path”. She tweeted: “Nine years ago [sic], I defeated fascist Nick Griffin at the ballot box,” she wrote on Twitter. “His racist party was investigated by the EHRC that same year. Now, after 4 years calling out Labour antisemitism, the EHRC will investigate Labour as well. “For Corbyn to have led us down this path is unforgivable.” Mike Katz, national chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, tweeted:

“For years we have been warning that the Labour Party’s response to antisemitism within our ranks has been woeful at best, and institutionally racist at worst. Last year we took the unprecedented step to refer the party to the @ EHRC, and we welcome their decision to launch a full statutory inquiry.” Simon Johnson, CEO of the Jewish Leadership Council, said the probe should be a “matter of shame” for the party. “We have drawn public attention over the past year to the leadership of the Party’s failure to address the antiJewish racism in the party,” he said. “The fact they have obfuscated, denied the problem and we have been accused of smears should be countered by today’s announcement by the EHRC. This is a very serious development.” Board of Deputies of British Jews president Marie van der Zyl said: “We note that the last party to face a racism probe from the EHRC was the British National Party, which is a truly shameful indictment.

“In the past four years, we have seen a large number of cases of antisemitism throughout the party from bottom to top. Despite the Jewish community demonstrating in their thousands outside Parliament, this has still not been addressed seriously by the party leadership. We await with interest the EHRC report into racism at the heart of the UK’s official opposition.” Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson said he had “privately and publicly” warned the party it faced a “vortex of shame” if it failed to deal with antisemitism. “I feel utter shame that this investigation is necessary, but I truly hope it will provide the means to finally root out anti-Jewish racism from our party once and for all,” he said. A Labour Party spokeswoman said: “Labour is fully committed to the support, defence and celebration of the Jewish community and is implacably opposed to antisemitism in any form. “We reject any suggestion that the Party does not handle antisemitism Jeremy complaints fairly and robustly, or that Corbyn the Party has acted unlawfully, and we will continue to cooperate fully with the EHRC. We support the efforts of the EHRC to draw attention to the obligations all political parties have under the Equality Act. But its ability to do so has been undermined by a 70 percent budget cut since 2010.” The EHRC has no powers to fine or prosecute organisations following investigation, but can make recommendations or draw up a legally-enforceable action plan.  Editorial comment, page 18

Unprecedented move to defend British Jews BY GIDEON FALTER

CHAIRMAN, CAA

Every Jewish News reader will be sadly familiar with the torrent of antisemitic incidents flowing from the once antiracist Labour Party. Campaign Against Antisemitism has worked for nearly two years to persuade the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the UK’s equality watchdog, to step in. On Tuesday, in an unprecedented move, it launched a full statutory investigation into antisemitism in the Labour Party under section 20 of the

Equality Act 2006. The Commission has set terms of reference for its investigation which closely follow our recommendations and will see a root and branch examination of antisemitism in Labour, as well as how the party’s processes and decisions have contributed to its rise. It will refer to the International Definition of Antisemitism that Jeremy Corbyn struggled so hard not to adopt. The Commission has statutory powers to compel Labour to reveal details of its handling of antisemitism in recent years, including internal communications such as WhatsApp mes-

sages and e-mails. The Commission can also seek court injunctions against Labour to prevent further antisemitic discrimination, harassment and victimisation. At the end of the investigation, the Commission will not just issue a report; it can also impose an action plan on Labour and enforce compliance through the courts. The Commission’s investigation has begun and not a moment too soon for the Jewish community. That this investigation even became necessary forever shames the Labour Party and those who continue to defend it.

CAMPBELL SPARKS #EXPELMETOO Former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell was expelled from the party this week for voting for the Liberal Democrats in the EU elections. He revealed his ballot box choice during a BBC broadcast on Sunday. After his expulsion, Campbell said: “In light of appeal, I won’t be doing media on this. But hard not to point out difference in the way antisemitism cases have been handled,” he wrote. Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, noted the speed with which Camp-

bell was removed and noted that that a party member in her constituency was merely suspended for denying the Holocaust. Labour members reacted to Campbell’s expulsion by admitting they voted for other parties too. Former ministers, including ex-home secretary Charles Clarke, joined councillors in claiming that they voted for a different party, saying they “await their expulsion papers” in an online movement trending under the hashtag #expelmetoo.

News / Theresa May quits

‘We’ll always appreciate her loyalty and support’ The Jewish community paid tribute this week to Theresa May, after she announced her turbulent time in Number 10 will end next month, paving the way for a new prime minister to lead the Brexit process, writes Adam Decker. A tearful May said she had “done my best” to get her withdrawal agreement through Parliament and take the UK out of the European Union, but acknowledged she had failed. She also movingly recalled meeting her former Maidenhead constituent, Sir Nicholas Winton, the British humanitarian who organised the rescue of 669 children, most of them Jewish, from Nazi-occupied Europe on the eve on the Kindertransport. He told her: “Compromise is not a dirty word”. “It is and will always remain a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit,” she added on the steps of Downing Street. On May’s reference to Winton, Alex Sobel MP wrote: “Theresa May cited advice from Nicholas Winton to compromise. It took her nearly three years to even consider compromising and seek consensus she then did it in a cack handed way! Her legacy won’t be the way she’s framing it!”

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis wrote on social media: “The Jewish community will look back on the premiership of @theresa_may with deep gratitude for her friendship – in particular, her commitment to challenging antisemitism wherever it is found, Holocaust memorial and the physical protection of our community. “She has always been and will forever remain a true Ohevet Yisrael [friend of Israel]. May she know only blessing and success in the future.” In a statement, the Board of Deputies thanked May for “being a true friend to the community,” citing the government’s adoption of the Interna-

tional Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition, funding boost to the Community Security Trust, and the Holocaust memorial, among her contributions. Board President Marie van der Zyl said: “We will also never forget May’s powerful speech to the Board of Deputies following the terrorist massacres in Paris in 2015, when she said ‘without its Jews Britain would not be Britain’ and held up a sign saying “Je Suis Juif”. We will always appreciate her friendship and support.” Jewish Leadership Council chair Jonathan Goldstein said: “From her action against antisemitism as home secretary to her government’s

protection of faith schools, the proscription of Hezbollah and the strengthening of ties with Israel, the prime minister has been a true friend. We wish her the very best for the future.” Sir Eric Pickles, honorary vice-president of Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, wrote on social media: “Theresa May’s sense of public duty is the dominant feature of her public life. “She should be thanked for working hard for her country.” Watched by her husband Philip and her closest aides, an emotional May said it was in the “best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort”. May said: “I am announcing I will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on Friday, 7 June, so a successor can be chosen.” Concluding her resignation statement, May broke down as she said it had been “the honour of my life” to serve “the country that I love”. Earlier, in a sign that the leadership race to replace May is already under way, Helen Grant quit as Conservative vice chair for communities to “actively and openly” support former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.  Opinion, page 25

HERO’S DAUGHTER URGES May’s Jewish moments ACTION OVER REFUGEES 1. SIR NICHOLAS WINTON

The daughter of Sir Nicholas Winton has urged Theresa May to accept more child refugees before she leaves office, after the prime minister evoked the Holocaust hero in her resignation speech, writes Jack Mendel. Barbara Winton called on the outgoing prime minister to meet the quota of 480 child migrants as put forward by Lord Alf Dubs, a Kindertransport refugee, in an amendment tabled in 2016 but scrapped under May in 2017. She said it was a “great surprise” to hear the prime minister quoting her late father, who was May’s constituent in Maidenhead, during her speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street last Friday. May movingly recalled meeting Winton, who organised the rescue of 669 mainly Jewish children from Nazioccupied Europe on the eve on the Holocaust. The prime minister quoted Winton, saying he told her “compromise is not a dirty word”, which his daughter said was in reference to the formation of the coalition government in 2010. She said her father “believed

On the steps of Downing Street last week, Theresa May recalled a conversation with her ex- constituent, Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved 669 mainly Jewish children from the Nazis. In 2016, following Jewish News’ successful campaign for Royal Mail to produce a stamp for Winton, the then home secretary helped launch the stamp at Maidenhead Station (pictured).

2. DINNER WITH THE CHIEF RABBI

On the eve of becoming Prime Minister, Theresa May and husband Philip went to Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis’ home for dinner. He described her as “a friend and champion of our community and of other faiths”, and said her decision to honour the engagement was an indication of the esteem in which she held the community. Sir Nicholas, centre, with daughter Barbara and Lord Dubs

it was a decent way to do politics”, and that “he was very prone to talking to people about the need for ethics and for compromise in public life”. However, following May’s resignation speech, Dubs, who was rescued from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1938, took to Twitter to criticise her. He said: “[Nicky Winton] was resolute in his determination to save refugee children like me. I hope that before she steps down @theresa_may will honour Nicky’s memory by welcoming more unaccompanied refugee children from

France, Italy and Greece.” Echoing Dubs’ call for more action on the issue, Barbara said “obviously, what I would like to see at the very least is the Dubs amendment quota – which the government put a very arbitrary and low level on of 480 refugee children from Europe being brought to Britain, and I think there are around 220 who’ve arrived”. “Especially as she [May] has shown on multiple occasions her respect and admiration for my father... it would be a very nice thing for her to do at this stage”.

3. LABOUR ANTISEMITISM

She used her party conference speech to call out Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of antisemitism, saying “what has it come to when Jewish families seriously discuss where they should go if Jeremy Corbyn becomes prime minister?”

4. HEZBOLLAH

As Home Secretary, May suggested waving Hezbollah flags could breach the Terrorism Act. Sajid Javid recently fully banned it.

5. JE SUIS JUIF

Following the Paris terror attacks in 2015, May showed solidarity during a Board of Deputies plenary. She promised the government would redouble efforts fighting antisemitism.

6. COMMUNAL INVOLVEMENT

She has attended many communal events, including an interfaith Mitzvah Day cooking session at JW3, speaking at Conservative Friends of Israel, attending Anne Frank Trust events and giving an historic speech at UJIA. She also continued discussions with the community.

7. RELATIONSHIP WITH ISRAEL

Her relationship with Israel has been challenging, despite consistently supporting the state, even meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu in Downing Street. She criticised settlement-building, the US for moving its Embassy to Jerusalem, and Donald Trump’s decision to scrap the Iran deal, causing some tension.

8. BALFOUR ANNIVERSARY

May congratulated the community ahead of the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, calling the document “one of the most important letters in history”, and called Israel “an old friend” in an article marking its 70th birthday.

9. SECURITY

In 2017, May pledged ‘total commitment’ on security, after having led the government to adopt the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism.

10. UNITED NATIONS

In March of this year, the UK called out the UN’s anti-Israel bias, saying: “Unless things change, we will adopt a policy of voting against all resolutions concerning Israel’s conduct.”

News / Landmark moment / Magical performance

20,000 reasons to cheer by Jenni Frazer @Jennifrazer

One of Britain’s hardest-working pro-Israel groups, We Believe in Israel, is celebrating the recruitment of its 20,000th activist. We Believe’s director, Luke Akehurst, said: “This is an incredible moment for us”, and he paid tribute to those who “are out there in their local communities day after day, doing the difficult work educating people about Israel and challenging anti-Israel activity”. We Believe in Israel was created after two pro-Israel conferences in London, the first in 2011 and the second in 2015, both held at times, says Akehurst, when the grassroots organisations were not really strong enough to respond to anti-Israel campaigns, and “communal morale was at its lowest”. Akehurst was recruited as an external consultant to help put together the first conference before running the second in-house. He said the feedback from delegates was overwhelming

Luke Akehurst, centre and below, leads a We Believe In Israel rally in central London

– “they said, give us more, give us the material to help us fight”. Today, with 20,000 activists to its name, We Believe can proudly point to 149 speaker meetings in every part of Britain, “from Inverness to Exeter, from Belfast to Norwich”. It has taken 60 local councillors on nine study tours to Israel; it has recruited 700 councillors to local government friends of Israel groups; and has launched a training academy for young pro-Israel professionals. The extraordinary achievement of

We Believe is that its success lies with just two people – Akehurst, who believes he has addressed 145 out of those 149 meetings – and his campaign executive, Rachel Kaye. Between them, and the growth in social media, they have managed to reach thousands of people. “We have to be on social media, challenging and putting out positive messages,” says Akehurst, “giving people information in bite-sized chunks”. The appetite for information – as demonstrated in the 2015 We Believe conference

in particular – means that there has been a nationally-concerted fight-back against the delegitimisation of Israel. One such campaign was before Eurovision, when not only did We Believe challenge an attempted boycott of Israel, but even produced party packs for Eurovision night parties. The breakdown of support shows We Believe activists are now 45 percent Christian, 40 percent Jews, with the remainder secular or previously non-committed. Among the most popular campaign materials distributed by We Believe is Professor Alan Johnson’s pamphlet Israel and the Palestinians: A Guide to the Debate, which has been distributed to thousands of students. What people want, argues Akehurst, is a way to make the case for Israel with confidence. He says there is a lot more work to do, and pays tribute to the other pro-Israel groups with which We Believe works in concert. “We need to build the broadest possible pro-Israel coalition to fight against anti-Israel campaigns, much of which are infested with antisemitism.” At least twice a year, Akehurst takes groups of local councillors on a first-time visit to Israel. For him, “it is not just a refresher course but also an amazing battery re-charge, to see what Israel is doing”. It is a practical realisation of Zionism in action – and 20,000 We Believers are helping to support it.

The all-male act featuring Josh, alongside James Samuel, Harry Nardi and Theo Mallalieu, were voted through by the public after their magic act, included former contestants Stavros Flatley making a surprise appearance. The magicians asked Simon Cowell to pick the name of one former BGT act from a list. The music mogul chose the British-Greek Cypriot father-son dance duo, while fellow judges Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon were tasked with picking out three words between them. The words “soft”, “star” and “valley” were later revealed as an anagram of “Stavros Flatley”. The act ended with the pair bursting from lockers positioned at the back of the stage to applause from the studio audience. Another act that surprised some viewers was hand-farter Guy First, who certainly brought in the laughs. The hopeful has his own YouTube channel, on which he presents his talent to That’s magic! music tracks. Josh Hennes His audition was no dif-

ferent, with more hand-farting along to the likes of Take On Me by A-ha. During 4MG’s audition on Saturday night, they amazed the room by performing a seemingly impossible trick involving picking out the correct cards chosen by each of the judges – even though one was in a closed packet of cards, which in turn had been placed inside a glass bottle that had to be smashed open with a hammer. David Walliams, one of four judges who approved 4MG, described the group as “the boy band of magic”, while Dixon said they were “unique”. Cowell said: “I’ve never seen an act like this before. It was amazing. I really like you guys.” Josh has been perfecting his magic skills

since the age of seven, alongside a long-running interest in football, tennis and surfing. The first live semi-final, on Monday, was eventful, with Dixon announcing she was pregnant and Holden saying the F-word.

Jewish Care’s JEM of idea for MS sufferers

Fiona Elias and her two daughters and (below) Sylvie and Jeff Cronick

Fiona Elias was left feeling terrified when, aged just 17 and without warning, she suddenly lost the ability to feel or move her legs, writes Francine Wolfisz. Baffling doctors with her symptoms, which also included sensitivity to light, exhaustion and memory problems, another decade passed before the Edgware mother of two was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic neurological condition that affects more than 100,000 Britons. Now Fiona, 34, has spoken about how the condition impacts her life to coincide with World MS Day, held on 30 May annually, as well as to highlight the vital work of JEMS, a Jewish Care group that meets once a month in north London. Recalling how doctors initially dismissed her symptoms as psychological – even though she was unable to walk – the then-teenager dropped out of school and suffered relapses of her symptoms before she finally received an answer in 2016 after the birth of her second daughter. She said: “It’s been a really long journey to get to that diagnosis.” The community programmer for Jewish Care still suffers from foot drop and memory issues, and said she was appreciative of having others to talk to about her condition. She said: “JEMS opened up a whole new world for me. When you think of a support group, you think of a place where people sit around and feel

sorry for themselves, but JEMS is not like that at all. It’s so positive and people share things they have found useful in coping with MS, from claiming benefits and applying for blue badges to discussing diet and new treatments.” It was while attending JEMS that Fiona first heard about Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, which aims to help slow the progression of the disease. She recently returned from receiving treatment in Moscow, having launched a £50,000 GoFundMe campaign last year. Sylvie Cronick, 64, who was diagnosed with MS more than 20 years ago, has also found solace in JEMS and attends with her husband, Jeff. When she was first diagnosed, Sylvie had been experiencing exhaustion and numbness down the left side of her body. She said: “I had absolutely no idea what MS was. I had to go to the library to find out and when I read about it I was devastated. My children were still very young and I was working, as well as looking after the house, my husband, and everything else. I was supermum, but now I was left wondering what the future would bring.” She added: “I went through dark days and thought that maybe speaking to others would help me. To meet people who had exactly the same as me was a big help. I felt I was not alone.”  For more information about the JEMS group, contact Jewish Care Direct on 020 8922 2222 or helpline@jcare.org

News / Judith Kerr: 1923–2019

Judith’s iconic books spread ‘immense joy’ Tributes to children’s author and illustrator Judith Kerr flooded in this week following her death, aged 95. Kerr, who authored The Tiger Who Came to Tea and the Mog series, was born in Berlin in 1923 and fled Nazi Germany with her family, and later helped generations of children understand her experience in the 1971 book When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, part of a trilogy. The family was firmly part of the city’s intelligentsia; her father Alfred was a theatre critic and newspaper columnist and outspoken critic of the Nazis, and her mother was a composer. When the Nazis took power in 1933, he fled to Switzerland and then France, before settling in England. Kerr taught herself to draw and illustrated her books, the most famous of which – The Tiger Who Came to Tea – was originally written for her own children in the 1960s. It has

book she ever read about the Holocaust, adding: “I have never forgotten the story or the sensitive and insightful way she described the trauma she and her family experienced. Her writings will continue to inspire new generations.” Human rights lawyer Adam Wagner tweeted she was “a giant of children’s literature, a refugee, an author whose values shone through in every word she wrote and beautiful, illustration she drew”. Association of Jewish Refugees chief executive Michael Newman described Kerr as “a cultural icon whose books were loved by generations”. He said she “leaves a rich legacy of charming and enduring stories and will be greatly missed”. The Jewish Museum London said: “Her work spread immense joy across the world and it was a privilege to get to know her.”  Editorial comment, p18

EX-JFS PUPIL TO FIGHT SIX FRAUD CHARGES A former JFS pupil accused of accepting more than £45,000 for a cancer she “allegedly did not have” is set to fight six counts of fraud in front of a jury. Nicole Elkabbas, 40, from Broadstairs in Kent, was charged after an investigation by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate. She is accused of taking £45,350 in public donations “for an illness she allegedly did not have”. Elkabbas was granted bail and her plea and hearing for a jury trial at Canterbury Crown Court will take place on Monday.

IRISH PARLIAMENT WARNED OVER BDS

Luciana Berger and Rabbi Baroness Julia Neuberger were honoured at an annual Jewish Care lunch, which raised £80,000 for adults with mental health needs, writes Francine Wolfisz. Berger, ex-Labour and now Change UK Liverpool Wavertree MP, received the Woman of Distinction award, while Neuberger was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. More than 200 guests attended the prestigious event at the Institute of Directors in London, which raised funds for Jewish Care’s Sidney Corob House, a West Hampstead residential care home. Berger said she was “touched and honoured” to receive the award in recognition of her efforts to confront antisemitism. The MP, 38, who attended with her 11-week-old son, Zion, paid tribute to a supportive network around her, adding “when I have been targeted by people that expound hate and by neo-Nazis, on my social media, my inbox, my postbag, which is filled with racial abuse, when the political debate turns dark and nasty, I’m fortunate to have an incredible network of family, friends and supporters. “I’m also privileged to have a plat-

form that I can speak out and report anything that is criminal.” The audience clapped as she revealed her actions have led to the conviction of seven people for threats towards her, with five serving prison sentences. Meanwhile, Neuberger, whose new book, Antisemitism, is released later this month, said she was “proud” of her achievements within the community. She said: “I’m very pleased the position of women has changed and that the relationship between the Orthodox and non-Orthodox has improved so

enormously and I hope I’ve been a part of that”, before adding: “There are still some things I want to do, so I haven’t stopped yet.” The Senior Rabbi of West London Synagogue, who has also recently been appointed chair of University College Hospital, said she wanted society to “rethink how we treat people with mental illness”. She said: “It’s a national question, but also a community question. I’m convinced there’s more we can do in an interfaith way with campaigning, rather than just talking to each

other. We should be the lead on this.” Award-winning screenwriter and executive producer of The Favourite, Deborah Davis, spoke to journalist Samantha Simmonds about waiting 20 years before her film went into production. To much amusement, she told the audience: “People came up to me and said how extraordinary to even think of this story of women in power – I just want to say it was not extraordinary to me, because as a Jewish woman I was brought up in a matriarchy. “I have three sisters and was brought up by the most dominant grandmothers, who I worshipped, and had the most wonderful mother. As such, there was a lot in my background, as a Jewish woman, that fed naturally into a story about three women.” Sidney Corob House resident Michael Yaghoubi, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2011, spoke about how the support of Jewish Care had helped turn around his life after he struggled to take care of himself. He said: “No amount of words can express my gratitude to Jewish Care and the Sidney Corob House team for making me who I am today.”

Special Report / ‘The Boys’ / ‘Hacked’ email IN 1945

Keeping alive Boys’ legacy “Right here on this spot,” declares James, eyes shining with purpose, “is where my grandfather stood at the end of atrocity and the start of hope,” writes Adam Decker. It’s 8am on a drizzling, chilly morning but you wouldn’t know it for the air of excitement on Old Town Square in Prague. There is passion and laughter in abundance, but also sadness, as four generations of Holocaust survivors huddle in front of the Jan Hus Memorial. “I am 19, and my grandfather Monty was just 15 when he made the trip to England. Now we are the generation who will carry on their stories and their survival,” explains James. About 250 family members and friends have returned to the site of three famous photographs taken of young survivors in August 1945. “The Boys”, as they became known, 732

boys and girls in total, were photographed by Czech soldiers before boarding RAF Lancaster bombers to various sites in Britain. For some, the moment is overwhelming. Tissues are hurriedly pulled out of pockets as the famous picture is recreated. Denise Kienwald, whose mother Minia Jay was one of “The Boys”, made the trip with her daughter Sharon Wakefield. “We have to keep telling our parents’ story to keep it alive,” she explains, her voice choked with emotion. “People have to learn that you have to be tolerant and what can happen if you aren’t. “Frankly it is a miracle that we are all alive today,” adds Sharon. Holocaust survivor Sam Laskier, 91, felt “very emotional” surrounded by his family that morning. “I remember this picture being taken in 1945 and I feel sad looking around seeing how few of us are left today. But I shall remember this moment for the rest of my life.” Sam is one of just six “Boys” to make the trip, alongside two other Shoah survivors with intimate connections to the group. Following their arrival in the UK, the group later formed the 45 Aid Society to raise money for survivors and teach the lessons of the Holocaust. Mala Tribich, sister of one of ‘The Boys’ The Boys learn English in 1945 Sir Ben Helfgott, explains that in the weeks Prince Charles meets Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis

Hilton Licht, 73, from Tel Aviv, says he bought an antismoking drug called Tabex on Quit With Tabex, but his order was refunded through PayPal. Licht contacted the retailer on Sunday requesting an explanation and was told the company did not ship to Israel. A second email said: “Jews have negativity on our businesses. Do you know why? building up to the weekend she had felt sadness thinking of the many survivors “who weren’t alive to see the reunion.” But, she insists, her mood changed that morning. Surrounded by 16 members of his family who travelled, Ben concurs: “I felt very positive, not at all miserable. Today represented survival: the survival of the next generation and all the generations that have come since.” That legacy is paramount to the first generation of survivors. Arek Hersh, 90, made the trip with his family, including granddaughter Liora Tamam. “Now that the photo is done we will go to Theresienstadt. It is very important to me that Liora walks in my footsteps so that she can see what the place was like.” Liora, squeezing his hand, reassures him that she “definitely feels a sense of responsibility to keep the legacy alive… “When I’m home, I will tell people grandpa’s story and the many other stories I’ve heard this weekend.” Dr Jan Roubinek, director of the Ther-

esienstadt memorial, greets the survivors upon their arrival. A memorial service begins outside the crematorium in which, he explains, more than 30,000 Jewish victims perished from autumn 1942 until 1945. During the ceremony, Angela Cohen, chairman of the 45 Aid Society, summarised the purpose of the trip: “We stand here today as a community united in memory in respect and love. From every corner of the world we’ve come together to stand on this ground where our loved ones suffered together and where, at liberation, they were reborn together to a future, to family and to life. Today we stand here shoulder to shoulder with each other.” A highlight for many is a Havdalah ceremony on Saturday evening inside the beautifully ornate Spanish Synagogue. Attendees are treated to a klezmer concert and, in a touching moment, survivor Icek Alterman, 91, dances joyfully to the uplifting Yiddish music filling the room.

Special Report / Veteran Games in Israel

Israel’s Invictus! Wounded British and Israeli soldiers take part in groundbreaking Veteran Games by Justin Cohen In Tel Aviv and Jerusalem justinc@thejngroup.com @Cohenjust

A British athlete stretches every sinew for success

Watching a grinning James Stobbs and his four boys posing with a Chelsea cap-wearing camel for pictures at the Dead Sea, you would never imagine the torment he’s endured. Indeed, the fact he was even able to make the journey thousands of miles from his home in Leeds to join more than 60 other injured British ex-soldiers is testament to what many participants in the first Veteran Games described as a “life-changing experience”. Two years ago, the Yorkshire Regiment Infantry soldier tried to take his own life amid the spiralling affects of post-traumatic stress disorder sparked by the loss of a number of friends in Afghanistan and then of his father. He was left a “shivering wreck” with panic attacks and was barely able to leave his house. Stobbs credits the charity Combat Stress with saving his life and the opportunity to fly to Israel this week for giving him a target to strive for. He said: “Before the opportunity of coming here, the therapy kept me alive, but I would have good days and bad days. After I decided to come to the Games with my family, there were good days followed by a better day, followed by an even better day. “Being here is 50 percent of my exposure therapy, so when I get back to Leeds I’m going to have a lot more confidence. It’s been amazing for my rehabilitation. If not for the Games, I’d probably still be sat in my living room feeling very sorry for myself. I hadn’t smiled for years.”

But over the five-day trip that smile was a permanent fixture on the 32-year-old’s face – partly thanks to the opportunity to spend quality time with his wife and children aged two to 12. “It’s brought us closer together because when I was suffering in the house, I wasn’t a father figure. For them to see me come out of my shell and compete, hopefully they think a little bit better of me now.” Eavesdropping on his father being interviewed, Stobbs’ oldest son Kyle interrupts with five words that must have been music to his ears: “What do you mean ‘hopefully’?!” The inaugural event – conceived and developed by Beit Halochem UK chairman Andrew Wolfson together with the Israeli Embassy – was inspired by the Prince Harryfounded Invictus Games, and funded by leading British Jewish philanthropists. It brought together UK and Israeli veterans to compete in swimming, rifle shooting and X Fit (a range of strength and endurance exercises) at Beit Halochem’s cutting-edge centres in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Like Invictus, it recognises sport’s capacity to boost rehabilitation. But this programme provided far more time for sharing experiences of war and recovery, and for families to spend quality time together, according to Matthew Neve, who won gold in archery at Invictus in Toronto. The RAF veteran suffered a breakdown after the Iraq War when he was charged with loading onto vehicles the bodies of colleagues killed in Iraq – and eventually discovered a passion for sport that enabled “me to get out of my head”. He said it was often the families who faced the “brunt of angry outbursts and not wanting to get out of bed” and the Veteran Games had been “for them to be able to go on a journey like this and talk to other families who’ve been

Help For Heroes salutes Israeli rehab A leading British charity has praised Israel’s approach to supporting the rehabilitation and recovery of wounded ex-soldiers and said it is a model that could be explored to help veterans in the UK, writes Justin Cohen. Help for Heroes chief executive Melanie Waters was inspired by a visit to a rehabilitation centre run by Beit Halochem in Tel Aviv as part of a high-level conference on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mental health featuring experts from both countries. She told Jewish News she was particularly struck that the centre offers on-site physiotherapy and other treatments as part of a “holistic” approach to rehabilitation. “It’s not just about the sport when it comes to veteran care,” the CEO said. “It was great to hear the Israeli government contributes towards care. The charity and membership tops up that support. If the government only pays for two physiotherapy treatments and there is a need for more, then the charity element helps. I like that model.” Waters hailed the “very generous” donors supporting Help for Heroes, but said what she had seen in Israel could feed into ongoing conversations with Health Secretary Matt Hancock. “Certainly there is something to say to the government about the holistic approach in uniting rehabilitation and recovery. If we were

able to do this with government financial help, there would be a positive outcome because we’d be helping veterans to live and go back to work and prevent our veterans having to go elsewhere. “Many military charities also have expertise with veterans they might not get in the health service.” She said she was also “impressed by the sense of community” at the centre, one of four run by the charity nationwide to support 51,000 veterans and their families, as well as victims of terror attacks. Waters – whose charity selects and trains the British squad for the Invictus Games, that were founded by Prince Harry – is now looking at the possibility of hosting a return Veteran Games and conference in the UK. She said: “Recovery through sport is in our

DNA. It’s great to see wounded veterans recovering with colleagues from Israel. “We are glad the families are here as we believe it’s part of rehabilitation and recovery.” The conference also heard from the Kate Davies, a director in NHS England responsible for armed forces commissioning, and Israeli experts made presentations on innovations in the battle against PTSD in veterans. Professor Sara Freedmen, of the School of Social Work at Bar-Ilan University, spoke about the use of virtual reality as a form of exposure treatment. Experts have now created a “virtual Gaza”, featuring the sounds of Army radio and complete with

a vibrating floor and even smell, she told the conference. Trials are set to begin later this year on a groundbreaking new virtual reality system allowing a person to change their body, rather than their location. “We want to see if it can effect self-esteem and help resilience in soldiers over time,” she explained. “We think it can be used to boost resilience before going into stressful situations.” The conference also heard of an ongoing trial on hyperbaric treatment – where those suffering from combat-related PTSD are placed in a special chamber and given oxygen every day for three months. Preliminary results show brain activity at a similar level to those free of PTSD and a decrease in depression. Haim Y Knobler, of Hebrew University, said a recent Israeli trial over four years involving medical cannabis showed a significant percentage of subjects with “much improved” symptoms. The conference was chaired by Sir Simon Wessely, consultant advisor in psychiatry to the British Army, and prof Zahava Solomon of Tel Aviv University. He said: “The Israelis have been known for some time to be very innovative in looking at treatments as they are with cannabis and MDMA

through similar. It helps expand their support network like it has mine. There are a few of us who’ve got quite close and we look forward to staying in touch”. Saying he had found a new sporting passion in shooting “much to my wife’s dislike as I now want to buy a rifle,” he added: “It’s also been great chatting to the Israeli guys because we realise we have had similar experiences and rely on sport.” He acknowledged that news coverage had initially made his wife concerned about bringing their daughters to Israel, but the couple are now considering coming back for a family holiday. “It’s a beautiful country,” he said. The group were treated like heroes from their arrival at the Carlton Hotel on Sunday – receiving branded rucksacks, water bottles and matkot (padleball) bats featuring the Games’ motto: ‘Uniting extraordinary people’.

Food was never far away: one participant revealed over dinner in Tel Aviv port the next day that they had just taken part in a culinary tour of the city that had directly followed lunch at Beit Halochem. The trip also included football training with coaches from Chelsea FC, dinner in the Judean desert and a meeting with President Reuven Rivlin. By day two, several participants were proudly uttering ‘sababa’ (no worries) in answer to almost anything, while others set their sights firmly on finding an Israeli wife. RAF Benevolent Fund ambassador Joanna Martin, who competed in shooting after a training accident left her in a wheelchair, enjoyed sharing experiences with fellow ambassadors she was meeting for the first time. While Gaza was the first thing that came to mind before the trip, the 57-year-old said: “My impressions have been

in the UK. Far higher drinking rates in Britain was another difference, he suggested. But Wessely said he would welcome specific funding from the state for the rehabilitation of veterans, as happens in Israel. Ray Lock, chief executive of Forces in Mind Trust, returned to Israel for the conference 18 months after being part of a visiting delegation of military charities. He said: ‘It’s clear that the environment in which our two nation’s militaries operate is very different in some respects, but what is striking is the innovation Israel brings to sorting out the issues that are common. “The nature of Israel – a very young, small state with a very clear identity – means that innovation thrives here. British and Israeli In Tel Aviv, there is Veterans enjoy no better place to the games come if you have an idea. “I’ve felt since my first visit that the combination of cutting-edge technology and online technology that Israel can bring is a space where we may wish to go.”

[the main ingredient in the party drug ecstasy]. They’re further ahead than we are and obviously we’ll look with interest at the results. “At the same time, we’ve led on peer support such as our trauma risk management systems, which seem to be moderately effective. “It is vitally important to look not just within our own country and its armed services, but also to look beyond. Some important issues will be missed if we are solely inward-looking.” He stressed that the two countries faced very different challenges in supporting veterans for a number of reasons, including compulsory service in Israel, and the existence of the NHS

transformed. I’m definitely going to go home and tell people they have to go to Israel.” She added: “The facilities at Beit Halochem are amazing.” The Games were funded by donations from The Patron Charitable Initiatives, The Pears Foundation, Rachel Charitable Trust, The Wolfson Family Charitable Trust, The Exilarch’s Foundation, The Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation and The Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust. Wolfson and BHUK chief executive Spencer Gelding vowed this trip would not be the last. The Israeli Embassy’s Michael Freeman, who helped organise the initiative, said: “We had a grand vision in our minds and it’s exceeded all expectations. If there are people who want to make it happen maybe in two years’ time, we can have another round with more countries joining in.”

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF WHAT SPORT CAN DO BY ANDREW WOLFSON

CHAIR, BEIT HALOCHEM UK Few things are more inspiring in life than to watch someone in private pain visibly change in front of your eyes. To see them smile again, embrace their loved ones and beam with pride. That’s what we’ve seen every day at the inaugural Veterans Games. The facilities at rehabilitation centre Beit Halochem have been the backdrop to an astonishing four days of personal transformation among British military personnel. They have endured years of turmoil, feelings of abandonment, and catastrophic injuries that have robbed them of the kind of life we all take for granted. And yet people with debilitating psychological and physical disorders have achieved things they didn’t think were possible. I wasn’t sure what to expect when we started planning the event, but I knew that what Israel provides for its military community in terms of rehabilitation is second to none and that British military personnel and their families would undoubtedly benefit if only they could see it up close. Not just by experiencing the facilities but, through competitive sport with Israeli veterans, channelling the positive spirit of empowerment for which the Beit Halochim centres are renowned.

Although I’ve been involved in the charity for a number of years, it was watching the Invictus Games that spurred me into action. Princes William and Harry have been instrumental in making competitive sport for injured personnel a meaningful event for a far wider audience. Why couldn’t we do something similar? We wanted to create an event designed to rebuild the fractured bonds within families, so we deliberately planned the week during the school half-term so veterans could bring their wives, husbands, children and parents. To provide a sense of belonging, to show them that something as simple as sporting endeavour can bring back feelings of pride and a sense of achievement that can often be lost after service ends and a life on civvy street begins. Israel knows this better than anyone. There’s so much here that Britain’s health leaders and decision-makers can learn from, particularly in how post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological traumas can be healed through physical therapy. It’s why we brought together some of the world’s leading academics in the fields of medicine and psychology to share research, build relationships and explore new ways of helping people. In coming weeks, we’ll assess how things have gone, get feedback from the British families as to what they think about Beit Halochim – and indeed Israel. Then we’ll figure out how to make the Veteran Games even more meaningful, transforming even more lives in years to come.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Skeletons exposed This week’s decision by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to investigate Jew-hate in the Labour Party throws the transparent incompetence of Shami Chakrabarti’s 2016 report into even sharper focus. It’s a matter of unspeakable shame and sorrow that a once-great party, indeed the natural political home for the British Jewish community, is only the second after the BNP to be scrutinised in such a humiliating manner. The EHRC will gain unfettered access to private documents, emails, social media messages and is free to call witnesses. Thousands of cases of repugnant antiJewish racism have surfaced in the past four years, despite the Labour Party’s reluctance to shine a light on its sickness. What will now surface? Jewish News has been on the front line of this appalling saga ever since Jeremy Corbyn took office and antisemites began hovering around him like flies to a carcass. This week, at long last, it feels like we’ve turned a corner.

Clouds and linings When it comes to Europe, some see the cloud. Others see the lining. So it was this week, not just with the elections, but with the issue of antisemitism in the continental heartland of Germany and Austria. The election clouds were represented by the gains made by nationalists and far-right parties. The lining was that they didn’t do as well as expected. In Germany, the government adviser’s fairly hefty cloud was his admission that he wouldn’t recommend Jews wear their kippot in some cities for fear of attack. The silver lining came in the form of the country’s biggest newspaper printing a cut-out kippah for anyone wanting to show solidarity. In Austria, vandals targeted pictures of Holocaust survivors in a street exhibition. The silver lining came in the form of the ordinary Viennese who came to repair the damaged pictures and join forces to guard the exhibition from further attacks. If Jew-hate is a cloud, it is a storm cloud, and an almighty one at that. Linings are nice, but they won’t save the house.

Thornberry’s futile demand How predictable, yet still so disappointing, it was to read about the shadow foreign secretary’s demand that the new Middle East minister recognises the state of Palestine (Jewish News, 16 May). To Emily Thornberry (pictured), her Labour Party colleagues and all right-minded people, please recognise facts. First, the only people who can recognise any so-called ‘state of Palestine’ is the Israeli government. Second, the leaders of the Palestinian people must recognise the right of Israel to exist as the homeland for Jewish people. This should be a prerequisite for, not part of, any peace negotiations to end the decades-old Israeli–

Sketches & kvetches

The final chapter To her own children, then to all, Judith Kerr created imaginative stories – about Mog the cat, a refugee family or an elderly lady and, of course, a story about a tiger coming to tea to tell her daughter at bedtime. The latter sold well over five million copies. She also introduced a generation to the idea of refuge from horror and hatred, drawing on her family’s experience. Beyond the books, people have this week been remembering the person – the personality and the stamina. In 2004, she described how lucky she felt to have escaped the Holocaust, how not a day now passed without her thinking about those who weren’t as lucky, and how she hoped she hadn’t wasted her life. She certainly did not.

Palestinian conflict. Third, Palestinian leaders must genuinely seek to negotiate a twostate solution, recognising that one of these will be Israel. This means ceasing all terrorist and military activity against Israelis, rather than pursuing the aim of driving the Jews out of their land and arriving at a one-state solution, whereby only Muslims live where Israelis do now. This version of a Palestinian state would not have any Jews living in it. Recognise these, and I believe that we could have a viable peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinian people. WE MUST CONSIDER ALL SHUL-GOERS, BUT PEOPLE DO STILL LIKE CHAZANS! The Chief Rabbi is, of course, right that that many millennials don’t want to “attend a performance given by the chazan or cantor in shul”. Many want to be active ‘selfservice’ participants rather than “be serviced at”. We must also regard the needs of all the older people, however, who now make up the bulk of our smallerattended services. Many go to shul because they appreciate the art of the chazan they grew up with. And even in those services without a chazan, they want to hear a pleasant service leader who ensures the correct nusach – mode of prayer – for the occasion. At the European Cantors

Association (ECA), we ensure the art of the cantor, which, like mesorah (tradition), has been handed down from generation to generation, continues to burn brightly in contributing to the rich diversity of services that now cater across the generations. We congratulate the Chief Rabbi, whom we also thank for being a patron of ECA, on his effort to bring back millennials into the fold, but also note there has to be room for both self-served and cantor-led services. And we know from our own wellattended activities that some millennials still like a chazan!

Editorial comment and letters

DO NOT SANITISE ‘YAHUD’ Letter writer David Chesler claims it is hypocritical for those who accuse Palestinians of antisemitism when they use Yahud [Jew] for Israeli while not being outraged when Israelis do the same (Jewish News, 23 May). He is incorrect. There is nothing wrong in Jewish Israelis referring to themselves as Jews, because they are both. Where one might object is when Israeli spokesmen claim to speak on behalf of non-Israeli Jews – but that is another matter entirely. The slogan of the Arab rioters in Hebron on Shabbat Nachamu 1929 when they massacred their anti-Zionist Jewish neighbours was “Idbach al-Yahud

[slaughter the Jews]” – they obviously found the distinction between Zionists and anti-Zionists not to have any practical significance. Similarly, when 24-year-old Bader Saleh said in Arabic “they encourage you to rip a Jew’s head off”, he meant that. What the BBC was doing was to sanitise his comment by substituting Israeli for Jew in the English subtitle to hide the virulent antisemitism encouraged by the Palestinian leadership, presumably to maintain a fake ‘balance’ between Israel and the Palestinians in its reporting.

Jewish émigrés helped post-war Britain boom ALEX BRUMMER

CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL

S

ome of the best stories of our age are to be found on obituaries pages. There we can find one of the unexpected gifts of Nazi Germany – the high culture, literature science and the arts brought to these shores by a generation of émigrés. The pickings are becoming thinner as the generation that arrived here in the 1930s, and later, passes. But what they left – and will leave – is eternal. One was reminded of this by the laudatory tributes to Judith Kerr, the beloved author of The Tiger Who Came to Tea, as the Guardian headline described her. Kerr’s chaotic childhood has been widely recorded. Her father, Alfred, was a leading German theatre critic and columnist, and her mother Julia a talented composer. As an outspoken criticism of Nazism, Alfred became a marked person fleeing Germany in 1933, as Jewish freedoms were

curtailed. He landed first in Switzerland, then France, before making it to England. The Kerr family story is a wonderful example of the survival of the human spirit amid the thuggery that ended with the death camps. Famously there were efforts to interpret the tiger, a children’s favourite, as the Gestapo that frightened Kerr’s family into fleeing the assimilated home of their birth. But in interviews she always insisted it was just what it said on the tin; the tiger was a friendly visitor enjoying an English tea. Among Kerr’s 50 hand-illustrated books is When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, published in 1971, one of a trilogy of semibiographical works. The émigrés brought with them a zest and imagination, which lifted British art out of the staidness of Constable and Stubbs, the pugnacious patriotism of Elgar and conventional scientific research traditions of Cambridge. In fine art, the contributions of Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach (whose parents died in the Shoah) changed the face of British painting.

THE ÉMIGRÉS BROUGHT WITH THEM A ZEST AND IMAGINATION, WHICH LIFTED BRITISH ART

There were also brilliant contributions to the City of London, symbolised by Siegmund Warburg of the investment bank SG Warburg & Co, which eventually was absorbed into Swiss giant UBS. Indeed, a whole generation of merchant bankers who arrived from Frankfurt provided the platforms for the Square Mile’s resurgence as Europe and the world’s financial sector. Among those émigrés recently to grace the obituaries was the impresario Victor Hochhauser, who was born in Kosice, Hungary (now Slovakia), and arrived in Britain in 1938, another refugee from Nazi persecution. In

contrast to many of the more assimilated émigrés, never lost touch with his deepseated Judaism. It was Hochhauser’s vision that opened the eyes of British culture to artists from the former Soviet Union, such as Rudolf Nureyev and the pianist Sviastoslav Richter and the Bolshoi and Kirov ballets. Obituary readers may also have noticed the deaths in the past few years of George Weidenfeld and Peter Owen, two of the giants of post-war publishing in the UK. Together with Paul Hamlyn, Max Reinhardt, proprietor of Bodley Head, Kurt Maschler of Jonathan Cape and the vilified Robert Maxwell, they were part of an émigré generation that recreated the London publishing scene post-war. Almost all of these publishers and typographers were refugees from Nazism. Many of a brilliant generation have now passed on and the great stories of their lives will be less rehearsed on the obituary pages. It is important that their lives continue to be commemorated as testimony to the benefits of a tolerant and open society.

Make the workplace your flexible friend SAM CLIFFORD

DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANT

I

’ve worked in the Jewish community in a variety of roles for 15 years and, during that time, have been involved in recruitment for a whole range of positions. Recently, when I was recruiting for my successor at the Yoni Jesner Foundation, I was completely overwhelmed by the response – more than 20 people expressed an interest in the post and 15 applied, most of them women. And the main reason for that? Well, the foundation is an amazing small charity that punches above its weight, giving the new director the opportunity to have a significant impact. That’s definitely a factor, but I also think one of the biggest factors was that this is a totally flexible job – three days a week, from home if you need. When I spoke to the potential applicants, this was one of the main factors. “I want to have a challenging job, but still be able to pick up my kids from school,” said one. I spoke to someone who had already used most of their annual leave for the year to look after her ill child. She couldn’t afford to take the

statutory unpaid leave allocated to days needed to care for sick children, and her managers wouldn’t provide the flexibility to let her work from home. I’ve been very fortunate to work for amazing employers since I had my children and have worked part-time for the past eight years. I know I am significantly more efficient and make more of an impact when I work part-time. I’m task focused, have my work hat firmly in place when I’m there and am also happy to be responsive on the days when I don’t work. Research also proves that part-time doesn’t only mean a part-time eye on the ball. A survey by BT in 2014 found that the productivity of flexible workers increased by 30 percent. And in a study of flexible workers undertaken by Cranfield University, almost 100 percent of managers said the quantity and quality of work improved or stayed the same. Jewish Care used to do a piece of training called the Relationship Bank account. This was a way of building a reciprocal relationship of trust between staff and their managers, particularly in times when promotion might not be an option. The idea was that if you do something outstanding or go above and beyond, you will

get credit in your relationship bank account. You could then ‘use’ those credits when you needed it, such as to attend a child’s sports day. The work force has changed. If you are not a service provider, you can be as effective working from your local coffee shop or your dining room table as in your office. What I also know is that if we don’t embrace flexible working, particularly to support working parents, but also anyone who has caring responsibilities, we will face a talent drain. I have personally seen so many of my contemporaries step back from the workplace when it becomes too difficult to achieve a successful, sustainable work-life balance. We can’t afford to have such a talent drain in the Jewish community. And, its not just about making your

employees happy. According to Timewise, whose tagline is ‘talent through flexibility’, flexible working has a big impact on retention, employee motivation and creates a more diverse workplace. Without even thinking too much about it, I can list those who lead their organisations while working flexibly, among them Simi Ben Hur at Shaare Zedek UK; Michelle Bauernfreund at the Office of the Chief Rabbi; Rabbi Miriam Berger at Finchley Reform Synagogue; and Hannah Weisfeld at Yachad. Several organisations, including Masorti Judaism and the New Israel Fund offer real flexible working. So why can’t our professional and lay leaders consider seriously thinking about whether the next job they advertise, and those after that, could be advertised as open to flexible working?

Populism and Jew hate are familiar bedfellows DAVID HIRSH

LECTURER & AUTHOR OF CONTEMPORARY LEFT ANTISEMITISM

P

olitics in our time is about defending democracy against an arrayed series of related attacks that we might call ‘populist’. Each populism is at heart an irrational conspiracy fantasy. Each insists that democracy is fake and each populism blames some group of our fellow citizens for all our troubles, demonising them as ‘enemy of the people’. It is not accidental that antisemitism is making a comeback as populism elbows its way back into politics. This fact is hugely consequential, not only for Jews but for anybody who wants to participate in the defence of democratic life. Antisemitism has always constructed its own fictional image of ‘the Jews’ which is quite distinct from the diversity of actual Jewish men and women. Antisemitism puts ‘the Jews’ at the centre of all that is bad in the world but in a terrible irony, it is antisemitism itself, nothing to do with Jews, which is connected to the key

political threats that we face. Similarly, anti-Zionism constructs the ‘Israel’ that it positions it as being central to, or symbolic of, they key evils on the planet. If that is right, then it follows that the defence against populism will also have to be a defence against antisemitism. Antisemitism is not a parochial issue about one small group of people. Opposing antisemitism is not to take one side in the Israel-Palestine conflict, a local conflict far away which we could choose to stay out of. Antisemitism is the form of appearance of antidemocratic politics, not far away but here, not only concerning Jews but concerning us all. Let me be clearer about what I mean by ‘populism’. The Corbyn, Trump and Brexit movements have quite a lot in common. There are many similar movements around the world: AfD in Germany, the Front National in France, the ruling parties in Italy, Austria and Poland. These are not yet totalitarian movements but they share a number of the characteristics by which philosopher Hannah Arendt defined 20th century totalitarianism. They are protototalitarian movements; precursors to totalitar-

THE CORBYN, TRUMP & BREXIT MOVEMENTS HAVE QUITE A LOT IN COMMON ianism; movements which prepare the culture for the real thing. Jihadi Islamists fit in here too. These movements are contemptuous of what exists and they see nothing of value in the democratic state as it is. There is no critique of Westminster or Washington politics, no thinking about how to improve life, only the promise to tear it all down and start again from zero. The populist demagogues construct communities of the good and they cast out those who do not fit. The Corbynites call the bad people, the ‘one percent’, the Zionists, the bankers or the elites. The Brexiters call them betrayers of the will of the people or they denounce those who side with foreign nations and bureaucrats against ‘us’. There is much contempt for the

‘liberal elite’, cosmopolitans, globalists and citizens of nowhere. Populism embraces nostalgic nationalism but it has one eye on a more radical project for the whole of humanity. Of course it is far from true that every Labour supporter, Trump supporter or Brexiter is antisemitic. Indeed all of these movements have Jewish support, people who mobilise their own identities politically and publicly in an effort to protect their movements from such accusations. The angry denials of antisemitism are plausible because they are genuine. People are not aware of the antisemitism in their own movements, whether it is explicit, whether it is hidden and difficult to interpret, or whether, so far, their ideologies are only similar to antisemitic ones. What is true is that populist movements animate conspiracy fantasy. And where that is allowed to happen, antisemitism becomes hugely attractive, and it finds fertile ground, while opposition to antisemitism looks like special pleading and Jewish tribalism.  Full version can be read at jewishnews.co.uk

May didn’t visit, but was Israel’s great ally JUSTIN COHEN

NEWS EDITOR, JEWISH NEWS

T

hat Theresa May faced the most unenviable task in recent UK politics won’t erase her place in history for the wrong reasons: losing the Tories’ huge majority in the polls and suffering the worst ever Commons defeat being the most glaring of those. Watching May announce her resignation, returning to some of the themes with which she started the job, you couldn’t help but wonder what could have been if Brexit had not been the albatross around her neck. It is a sign of the all-encompassing nature of Britain’s ‘mission impossible’ that she will not be following every British premier since Margaret Thatcher to visit Israel in office. Yet she will go down as perhaps the greatest ally Israel and British Jewry have ever had at Number 10. It didn’t get off to a promising start when, less than a year into her tenure, Britain backed — and helped to draft — a UN security council

motion describing the West Bank and East Jerusalem as “occupied” and settlements as having “no legal validity”. Mike Freer, the MP for Finchley and Golders Green, suggested at the time that the PM had been ‘blindsided by the foreign office’ over the vote and suggested it would force a change. Within hours of the vote, Downing Street also issued an unprecedented rebuke of then US Secretary of State John Kerry over a speech following the vote that focused on the role of settlements in the absence of a two-state solution and attacked the make-up of Israel’s coalition government. It was at another UN forum – this time the disgraced Human Rights Council – that the UK made good on its promise to vote against all motions under Article 7, which criticised Israel’s actions in the occupied territories, in protest at the body’s bias. It never is, and never was, justified,” she told a Conservative Friends of Israel lunch. “We will always support Israel’s right to defend itself, today and in the future.” May’s time at the top saw record UK-Israel trade, and coincided with a huge moment in bilateral ties: the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. Although the government sought a balance between celebrating its role in the

creation of Israel and acknowledging some of the famous document’s goals are yet to be fully realised, the PM invited Benjamin Netanyahu to London and both addressed a dinner in recognition of what spoke of as “one of the most important letters in history”. On the domestic scene, the politician who held a placard proclaiming Je Suis Juif after the French hypercacher attack continued to lead from the front in the fight against antisemitism. In 2017, her government become one of the first in the world to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. But perhaps nothing better illustrated the PM’s commitment on this issue than her decision to go ahead with an appearance at a conference on Jew-hate and misogyny straight after a punishing afternoon in the Commons taking questions on her Brexit deal. At a time when the majority of UK Jews are fearful at the prospect of a Jeremy Corbyn-led government, the prime minister was, at least when it came to her support for the Jewish community and Israel, strong and stable.

3 MEET AND EAT

Holocaust survivor Susan Pollack MBE joined South Woodford Mosque Imam Dr Mohammed Fahim for an interfaith iftar hosted by Rabbi Mordechai Wollenberg of Woodford United Synagogue. The event, attended by nearly 100 residents from all faiths, included workshops on tackling hate crime and opportunities for residents to meet. Wollenberg said: “The event was a huge success, with Muslims and Jews coming together to learn about each other’s faiths and perspectives. For many Muslims, it was their first time in a synagogue and for many of the Jewish guests, it was their first iftar.”

That switch was very traumatic.” When police raided his flat, Richard was found unconscious, surrounded by £1.5 million worth of drugs and cash, wearing nothing but a tank-top – literally caught with his trousers down. He was jailed for eight years but served four, thriving in prison and released early for good behaviour. “I thought he wouldn’t last a week [in prison],” says James. “He was this small Jewish man and I thought he’d get ripped to pieces.” Not a bit of it. “I got into it very easily,” says Richard, who now lives in Bow. “I liked the strict timing of everything. I told the others [prisoners] what I was in for, but I don’t think they believed me. I made friends, both men on the wing and prison officers, which theoretically

He found it reassuring. Before long other prisoners joined us. It was clear they weren’t Jewish, but we didn’t care.” The book is funny, moving and filled with Jewish humour. James describes how his ping pong playing asthmatic father “helps perpetuate the stereotype that all Jews are sh*t at sport,” how “smoking weed is not an uncommon pastime in the community, because it helps with the Jewish neurosis,” and how he found himself worrying that his father wasn’t eating enough at the height of his drug addiction. “Like a proper Jewish mum, every time I popped over I came bearing food.” The book traverses the lives of both father and son, the latter navigating J-Date, stone-setting ceremonies and in-laws’ interrogations, describing how tall slim rabbis “buck the trend,” how it is

“apostasy” for London Jews not to live in Barnet, how “every bl**** Jew on the planet seems to run their own

company,” and how the point of the Tish is to officially sign the wedding contract but is actually “just a big Jewish p***-up”. Neither father nor son is particularly religious, but both say they are nevertheless proud of their Jewishness. “Not a day goes by when I don’t think about the Holocaust,” Richard says. “I just don’t know how any God could allow that.” I ask what Richard wants on his gravestone. There’s no hesitation as he devilishly smiles and answers: “Where’s the crystal meth?”  Breaking Dad by James Lubbock is published by Mirror Books, priced £16.99

The photos include a senior politician, an award-winning actress, an acclaimed children’s author and a peer, shot by South African-born photographer Jillian Edelstein, who now lives in north-west London. It is a subject close to Edelstein’s heart. At the height of Europe’s refugee crisis in 2015-16, she travelled to Lesbos and Calais, capturing the experience of those fleeing war, conflict, drought and the rise of radical Islam.

Reid all about it!

Stephen Oryszczuk visits a luxury hideaway in Funchal and discovers how Madeira’s capital provided a safe haven for hundreds of Jews fleeing Nazi persecution

I

in the Palm House at Kew Gardens recently, Mrs O and I came across a clamour of camera-clad visitors crowding a beautiful jade-green vine. Signs explained Kew botanists’ painstaking 30-year effort to grow this magnificent plant, found only in the disappearing rainforests of the Philippines. The jade vine, with its pendent trusses of luminous blue-green flowers, is pollinated by bats, whose habits Kew gardeners struggled to mimic. Finally, in 1995, they cracked it. There, in the Palm House, it grows today, as spectacular as it is rare. We felt privileged to see it. A month later, we visited Reid’s Palace near Funchal, capital of the Portuguese island of Madeira, and found the supposedly shy jade vine running rampant in the hotel’s botanical gardens. In this little corner of the Atlantic, just four hours from Kew, it was having an absolute ball. It was so profuse that if I hadn’t known better, I’d have thought it a rather beautiful weed. The jade vine is but one treasure of the hotel’s botanical garden, begun in the late 20th century by Scotsman William Reid, who jumped aboard a Madeira-bound ship aged 14, because his doctor said he could do with some sun. He made his money exporting wine, married an Englishwoman, bought a rocky promontory with stunning views and set about building a firstclass hotel. For the gardens, he imported tons of soil and a flair for the unusual. They thrived, and today they are an island highlight, even in a land known as the Garden Isle, where the biggest festival centres on flowers. Reid needn’t have bothered with the soil – the rich volcanic earth means just about anything flourishes here – but I’m glad he bothered with the hotel. He died just before it opened in 1891, but would no doubt be pleased with its current state of health in old-age, under the ownership and direction of Belmond, a luxury hotel group with

a knack for rescuing and reviving historic properties. This summer marks 500 years since two Portuguese explorers discovered Madeira. In the early 1950s, Winston Churchill discovered Reid’s Palace, writing his wartime memoirs here, the latest in a long line of visiting aristocrats, nobles and intellectuals. Empress Elizabeth I of Austria was carried

occasional cocktail and dip in the ocean, the hotel arranged a tour of the island’s north for us, courtesy of Madeira Tourism Board. We glided along the well-maintained coastal roads through fishing villages, vantage points and mountains worthy of any motion picture (the director of Jurassic Park wanted to film here). After a selection of stops to admire the local crafts, churches and clifftop views, we arrived in

Some Madeira, my dear?: Looking out at the sunrise from Pico de Areiro. Right: the sumptuous surroundings of the Reid Hotel

up to the hotel from the sea in a hammock, and writer George Bernard Shaw learned to dance in the courtyard. While black and white photos speckle the oak-panelled corridors, this is no museum. The rooms, all with balconies or patios overlooking the Atlantic, are top-class, as is the service and facilities. Food in the hotel’s Italian Restaurant Villa Cipriani is as good as I’ve tasted, including in Italy. Madeira loves its food and wine, as do I. After a day or two relaxing by the hotel’s seawater and freshwater pools, peppered with the

Porto Moniz with its series of sea-fed volcanic rock pools – perfect for a paddle. On our return, we stopped off high in the mountains, where a Madeiran family cooked us espetada, a local delicacy comprising beef marinated in oil, salt and bay laurel from the ancient forest that still carpets part of the island, cooked over an open fire on a laurel skewer and served with fried maize (surprisingly tasty), potatoes, vegetables and roasted garlic bread. Even Mrs O, who never eats too much, ate too much. Such was the sublime taste of it all.

The next day we were up at 6am for sunrise above the clouds at Pico do Areiro, 1,810 metres above sea-level and fully accessible by car. Armed with warm coats, we watched sunrise, which signalled the start of a triple-peak trek for those more intrepid than Mrs O and I, who opted instead for a 4x4 journey down the mountain, through flowers and birdsong, criss-crossing the island’s famous levadas (irrigation channels) before arriving at a beautiful woodland setting where Belmond laid on a luxury champagne breakfast, complete with personal butler. Just like back home. In the early evening we took the free hotel shuttle to Funchal, where there is a long, rich and well-documented Jewish history. Menasseh ben Israel, one of the great figures of Sephardi Jewry, was born here in 1608. The 168-year-old Jewish cemetery is the final resting place of both Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews, who came from places such as Morocco in the 19th century. During the war, 200 Jews fled here from Gibraltar, as the Rock became vulnerable to the Nazi threat. Back at the hotel, we sat on the sixth-floor balcony overlooking the bay, watching cruise ships and fishing vessels come and go, paddle boarders slowly silhouetted by the fading light, enjoying a glass of Madeiran wine as Churchill once did, cigar in-hand no doubt, and pondered how he helped to defeat that threat once and for all. I can think of no nicer place to ponder that, or anything else.

SEDRA Behukotai

Torah For Today What does it say about: inheriting £50million? BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL This week’s reading, Bechukotai, is also the Shabbat on which we bless the coming month of Sivan. There is a contrast here, as Bechukotai contains one of two Torah readings detailing the terrible times that will come upon the Israelite people if they behave callously and rebelliously before God. Addressing us in the first person, God cuts a deal. If we abide by his commandments, the rains will fall on time and our produce will arrive safely. There will be peace in the land, and our enemies will flee. The reverse is also true. If the Israelites annul and repudiate their covenant, there will be several stages of decline. Not only do plague and enemies threaten to overcome us, but nature refuses to cooperate with working the land. The next stage is pestilence, the third is war and starvation, the fourth a holocaust scenario where starved parents eat the bodies of their children, and then exile. Then, the land will begin to recover and people will engage in repentance, even as the sound of a fluttering leaf will strike fear in a ghettoed population. After confessing their sins, God will recall the His promise and return His people. The final section details how individual Israelites can donate to the holy sanctuary a value representative of either their own capacity to work, the value of an animal or of a piece of land. Perhaps this reflects today’s need to ensure spiritual and educational leaders are supported by the people and not interest groups, so our children can look forward to a more moral world.  Rabbi Abel serves Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation and is padre to HM Armed Forces

Imagine finding out you are the heir to an immense fortune. It sounds like everybody’s dream. Out of the blue, you discover that you need not scrimp and save, but can benefit from an estate worth many millions, a stately home, and a substantial stipend. It must be like winning the lottery. We all know there are firms which specialise in seeking out the heirs of legacies, and who has not dreamed of such an event? The proof is simple. You are entitled to it if you are the senior male relative. Halacha provides for inheritance to males and for females only during the lifetime of the legator. The oldest son is supposed to get a double portion, as compensation for

Lucky man: Jordan Adlard Rogers inherited £50m after a DNA test

providing the first, experimental, childraising experience for his parents.

JORDAN ADLARD ROGERS WAS HANDED THE KEYS TO A £50M COUNTRY ESTATE

These days of course, things are complicated by the possibility of DNA tests. What do you do if someone shows up claiming to be an heir? We should perhaps note that the Israeli rabbinate are currently using DNA tests to prove halachic Jewish status – something on which the halacha is unsurprisingly silent, and which is arousing considerable controversy. Jordan Adlard Rogers recently inherited a £50million country estate in Cornwall based on such a test. However, being born out of wedlock, halacha might not have recognised his right to inherit, although the DNA, combined with a strong likeness to his father, indicates exceptional links to his father. Although it has not been legally tested in practice, under halacha the estate could well have gone to a more distant relative.  Rabbi Zvi Solomons is rabbi of JCoB.org, the Living Jewish Community in Reading

Bible Says What? Moses’ adversary was the ‘Bald One’ BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY It’s interesting to look at the meaning of the names of the characters in our Torah. One notable one is Korach – the leader of a rebellion against Moses – which means ‘Bald One’. Hebrew names are significant, a gift you give to a child and in turn hopefully the gift that child then bestows upon their parents. So, I often wonder why this name was given to Korach. There were only three times when Israelites were permitted to shave their heads. The first was when a person re-entered the community and its religious life after recovery from a skin disease, translated from the Hebrew as ‘leprosy’, but it also has a link to the word for ‘gossip’. Miriam was struck with this when she spoke out against her brother and so perhaps Korach’s moniker is because of the evil words he spoke against Moses as well. The second time when a shaved head was permitted was to end a person’s time as a nazir, who like Samson, was someone who has vowed to

not cut their hair and abstain from all alcohol. Perhaps Korach was ending a period of spirituality by attacking Moses. Thirdly, it is part of the ritual of consecration for both priests and Levites when they commenced their service in the sanctuary. Korach could have been expecting to be consecrated as a priest as he was already a Levite. I shaved my head at 18, but it probably had a lot to do with rebellion. I noticed people made assumptions about my politics, attitudes, sexual orientation and thought I was a veggie. So what does ‘Korach’ mean? As rabbis, we often refer to the ‘children’ of Israel and, if we take that literally, then perhaps Korach is the teenager shaving their head, rebelling as a rite of passage and choosing to stand outside communal conventions.

Progressively Speaking What does Yom Yerushalayim mean for British Jews? BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS Last month, I was invited to explore the textual roots of Jerusalem with young leaders from across the spectrum of Jewish youth movements at a UJIA pre-Israel tour training seminar. The voices in the room were incredibly diverse: from having proudly joined Yom Yerushalayim marches (which assert Israeli sovereignty through the Arab Quarter of the Old City), to really struggling with the political and social challenges in the city. But everyone approached the topic with openness, honesty and respect. Jerusalem may have been the unified capital of Israel for only a few decades, but it has sat at the heart of many of our conversations and prayers for thousands of years. In the Prophets and Lamentations, the name and idea of Jerusalem is so central that it often represents the whole of the land. When a vicar friend asked me how the Jewish community felt

about President Trump moving the US embassy to Jerusalem last year, I laughed at the idea the community could agree about our feelings on anything. Then I thought about it and realised Jerusalem is felt by a majority to be totally central. Perhaps we are surprised others don’t consider it Israel’s capital. But that doesn’t mean moving an embassy there will do any good, and when the balance of ‘peace’ is so delicate, it can potentially provoke problems. When the spiritual and political clash, it becomes even more difficult to navigate. Isaiah 56:7 describes the Temple in Jerusalem as a place of prayer for all the nations, and you only have to walk

the streets of the Old City to absorb the many layers of diverse prayer and custom that have added their whispers to the stones of Jerusalem. Yet Jerusalem is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to peace, the piece of the puzzle always left till last. In many ways, this is a heartbreaking truth for a city that means so much to so many, and has held the hopes and fears of its inhabitants. This Yom Yerushalayim, whatever the city means to you politically, perhaps we should reflect on the words of the Psalmist: “Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem”, and through our actions, may we create a Jerusalem where all visitors and residents experience the beauty and wholeness of the city, and Jerusalem truly holds all their prayers.  Rabbi Debbie YoungSomers is community educator at the Movement for Reform Judaism

Professional advice from our panel / Ask Our Experts

Ask our Our trusty team of advisers answer your questions about everything from law and finance to dating and dentistry. This week: The secret to business success, witnesses to a will and moving to Israel

MAXI ROSE TELECOMS SPECIALIST

RCUK

Dear Maxi My question isn’t telecoms related. I’ve been an RCUK customer for many years and you’ve helped my small business stay connected. Over the years, I’ve watched your company grow and grow. Is there any chance you can fill me in on your secret? Daniel Dear Daniel Firstly, thank you for being a loyal customer and for following our brand’s ever-evolving story. Growing Rose Communications Group has been a challenge, but one helped by having a strong business strategy – it’s always important to know what

CAROLYN ADDLEMAN DIRECTOR OF LEGACIES

KKL EXECUTOR AND TRUSTEE COMPANY Dear Carolyn Please could you clarify the position with regard to executing a will, particularly as to who can act as witnesses? Phillip Dear Phillip Thank you for raising this

fundamental point. When writing about will drafting and considering the many points of law and tax that can go into writing a will, it is easy to forget that all the most precise legal work and thorough drafting can be rendered useless by a mistake when the will is signed. Two independent adult witnesses of sound mind are required when you sign your will, and both should be present when you do sign. A beneficiary of a will cannot be a witness, otherwise any gift to them in the will becomes void. I would define ‘independent’ as not being a beneficiary or the spouse or partner of a beneficiary

your company stands for, why customers should buy from you, and why people should come to work for you! In the end, our business strategy is based around people, and this has helped us to thrive. My team and I are always looking for new ways to build a closer relationship with our clients and meet new ones, too. This summer, we hope to meet as many people as possible at JTrade, Britain’s only Jewish trade expo. Will you and your business be attending? This event is important for us, as we truly believe in boosting trade and collaboration across the wider Jewish community. Both of my brands will have stands at JTtrade – you’ll be able to find RCUK at stands C22 & D23, and Alfonica will be at E23 & D24. Pop by and I’ll be happy to give you some more advice there and also... I just checked your business account and have some ideas about how we could improve your broadband connectivity. I’m looking forward to speaking to you soon.

and, as a ‘belt and braces’ measure, I would extend this to exclude any close relatives of such a beneficiary. A lot of people think that a person named as an executor of a will cannot witness it, but they can act as a witness as long as they are deriving no benefit from it. If you need to make any handwritten alterations to the will before signing it, make sure you and your two witnesses initial them in the adjacent margin. These are the main points to watch out for, but do contact your will drafter before signing the document if you are unclear about any part of the process.

Please can you give me some advice? Rebecca

STEPHEN MORRIS REMOVALS MANAGING DIRECTOR

STEPHEN MORRIS SHIPPING LTD Dear Stephen I understand that you are the man to ask questions concerning moving to Israel. I’m totally confused about what, out of what I already own, is worth taking and what I should buy new – and if I should buy here in the UK or Israel. I’d also like to know how much I can send.

Dear Rebecca Generally, when you make aliyah, you will be allowed three tax and duty free shipments within the first three years. The size of those shipments is immaterial. An air freight of a TV or the sea shipment of a 40’ container would each be classed as one shipment. What I recommend is that you first consider the requirements of your new residence. Is it fully furnished? Is it a small, temporary rental while you search for something more permanent? Draw up a list of what you need in your new home. If you

already own some of the items, then consider whether they would be suitable for Israel (particularly with regards the climate) or perhaps if, for sentimental reasons, you simply must take them. As a rule, the things that families buy most when making aliyah are white goods – including fridges and washing machines – TVs, sofas and beds. Israel has much to offer, but most of these items will be cheaper to buy in the UK (even after shipping) and you can reclaim the UK VAT and not pay VAT or duty on import. There are, however, some exceptions to this. Please feel free to call me or Nefesh b’Nefesh to discuss further.

JVN Trustee Connection Service

JVN 1-2-1 Matching Service

If you have professional expertise and are passionate about a charitable cause, a trusteeship is a great way to make your mark on an organisation.

Do you have the desire to make a difference?

The JVN Trustee Connection Service will connect you to an organisation that is looking for someone with your interests and skills to play a role on their Board.

At JVN we aim to ensure that each volunteering experience is as beneficial for the volunteer as it is for the charity or people they are helping. Why not come into our office and meet a member of our friendly and knowledgeable team one-to-one, for a bit more guidance on searching, identifying and applying to volunteer?

As a trustee your experience will be highly respected and your contribution will help steer the charity towards achieving their goals.

It’s perfect if you are finding it tricky to navigate our website, if you need some assistance choosing the right volunteering opportunity, or if you have found something you like and simply want to talk through your options.

To express your interest in a trusteeship, contact Lia Bogod at lia@jvn.org.uk or on 020 3869 3916.

If you would like to find out more, speak to Rachel to book your appointment at rachel@jvn.org.uk or call 020 8203 6427 ext.3.
