Step closer to a cure Israeli cancer breakthrough ‘doubles life expectancy’
Cancer cells divide relentlessly, forming solid tumors or flooding the blood with abnormal cells
Israeli scientists have developed a targeted pancreatic cancer therapy for people who carry the BRCA genetic mutation, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The breakthrough will be of interest to Jewish communities around the world, because about one-in-40 people with Ashkenazi Jewish heritage have a mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, compared to one-in-800 of the general population. While trials are ongoing, the new drug in question is called Lynparza (olaparib), which has been shown to treat a specific type of metastatic pancreatic cancer in people who carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. Leading the studies has been Dr Talia Golan, head of the Sheba Medical Center Pancreatic Cancer Center at Tel Hashomer Hospital, whose team has been working with pharmaceutical giants Astrazeneca and MSD (Merck). She said the drug, which is taken as tablets, was an important example of a new breed of “precision medicine based on a specific genetic bio-marker,”
those being BRCA1 and BRCA2 in this case. There were almost 460,000 cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed last year, making it the 12th most common cancer worldwide. It is also one of the most deadly – currently less than three percent of metastatic pancreatic cancer sufferers survive more than five years after diagnosis. Often there are no symptoms until it is too late, meaning early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is difficult. Four in every five patients are diagnosed at the metastatic stage. The new drug was tested on patients who had already undergone chemotherapy and scientists said on Monday that the latest Phase 3 trials showed that the drug nearly doubled the amount of time a patient lived without the disease progressing. The results were announced at the 2019 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting in Chicago and published in The New England Journal of Medicine. “This drug provides tremendous hope for patients who have pancreatic cancer,” said Golan, a world expert who works with British olim Dr Yaacov Richard Lawrence, a senior physician in radiation oncology. “When we saw the results were positive, it really was an exceptional and phenomenal moment.”

Community split on Trump visit Secular and religious Jewish leaders across the UK gave a mixed reaction to the visit of US President Donald Trump this week, as organisers of a ‘Jewish bloc’ protest said Jews had helped show
he was not welcome in Britain, writes Adam Decker. Those behind the Jewish anti-Trump march said he had “demonised minorities and brought the far-right into the mainstream”.
As plans to protest gathered pace, Liberal Judaism chief executive Rabbi Danny Rich said he tried to “distinguish between the president of the United States and its current occupant”. He said: “The president is the democratically-elected leader of one of Britain’s most important allies and those who hold public office have certain responsibilities. “Donald Trump, however, is a boor, an egoist, and has made inappropriate comments about events in

British life. He seems unable to engage in civilised debate which is a danger to a healthy democracy.” In the strictly-Orthodox world of Stamford Hill, however, Jewish Community Council of North London director Levi Shapiro said Trump was “an outstanding friend for the Jewish people who should be applauded”. He added: “We welcome the president to London. This is an important state visit for many reasons and we should look for positive outcomes. America has welcomed the British and we should do the same.” Amos Schonfield, an organiser of the Jewish protest march and Yachad representative at the Board of Deputies, said Jewish demonstrators included members of youth movements, university students and those who took a day off work to protest Trump’s presence. “One of the points I’ve been making to more conservative members of our

community in the past few days is that the past year has been one of the deadliest ever for American Jews, with shootings at two synagogues,” said Schonfield. “Trump’s policies, whether anti-LGBT or separating refugee families at the border, are an absolute affront to Jewish values and a community whose experience is one of seeking refuge.

Berger has quit her second political party in four months
Luciana Berger was among six MP who left Change UK – The Independent Group this week, after defecting from Labour just months earlier. Berger quit Labour citing antisemitism concerns during a press conference in February, where she said: “I cannot remain in a party that I have come to the sickening conclusion is institutionally antisemitic.” The newly-formed party split as high-profile figures walked out following a poor showing at the recent local and European elections. A joint statement from MPs leaving Change UK, tweeted by Heidi Allen and Sarah Wollaston, said: “We are all immensely proud of the team of Change UK candidates and supporters who stepped forward to join us in
making the unequivocal case for Remain in the recent EU elections. We believe Change UK boosted the campaign and turnout. “To all the newly-elected MEPs who stood on an unambiguous manifesto to remain, we offer our congratulations and support as we continue fighting together for the UK to remain in the European Union. “We are very grateful to everyone who has supported us over the past four months since we left our respective political parties. Heidi Allen, Luciana Berger, Gavin Shuker, Angela Smith, Chuka Umunna and Sarah Wollaston have made the decision to leave Change UK, returning to supporting each other as an independent grouping of MPs.”
That’s why any Jewish presence at the protest is welcome, and why Trump isn’t.” Comment, p18 & 20
NEWS IN BRIEF
CORBYN SPEAKS AT ANTI-TRUMP RALLY Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told protesters gathered around Trafalgar Square for an anti-Trump rally to “chase down antisemitism”. “I’m very disappointed that our mayor of London has been attacked in the way that he has,” he said, referencing a tweet by President Trump describing Sadiq Khan as a “stone cold loser.” “I am proud that our city has a Muslim mayor, that we can chase down Islamophobia, antisemitism, and any form of racism because racism divides,” Corbyn said.
NO MOMENTUM FOR WILLIAMSON TALK A local Momentum group has withdrawn support for an event featuring suspended Labour MP Chris Williamson. Williamson was expected to meet local members of the Jeremy Corbyn-supporting group in Harlow at 7.30pm at the Essex Skipper pub and discuss austerity and monetary policy, as first reported by Your Harlow. However, after complaints from Local Conservative MP Robert Halfon and communal figures the left-wing group has withdrawn its support. A Harlow Momentum spokesman confirmed it had “decided to withdraw its support following a democratic vote at our meeting on 3 June.”

RILEY SUES MURRAY OVER CORBYN TWEET Rachel Riley is pursuing legal action against Labour’s complaints chief Laura Murray and seeking £50,000 in damages over tweets, according to a report. The Countdown star, 33, is set to sue Murray for libel after the pair exchanged heated tweetsr. Riley took to social media when Jeremy Corbyn was egged during a mosque visit in March. Retweeting a post that said “If you don’t want eggs thrown at you, don’t be a Nazi. Seems fair to me,” she commented: “Sound advice.” The tweet prompted Murray to call Riley as “dangerous as she is stupid” and urged her followers not to “engage with her. Ever”.
LABOUR SUSPENDS FORMER CANDIDATE Labour has suspended a former candidate in Norfolk who described Hillary Clinton as a “Rothschild w***e” on social media, it is understood. Joseph Dickerson, who stood in the Breckland Council elections in May, has been suspended pending an investigation. Reams of messages referencing the Rothschild family and dismissing Labour antisemitism claims were posted from his social media, as reported by GnasherJew.
Blair: Corbyn has antisemitic views Tony Blair this week told an Israeli audience that some of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s comments cannot be construed as anything other than antisemitic, writes Adam Decker. The former prime minister was speaking at Bar-Ilan University’s Board of Trustees gala and was asked about Brexit, Theresa May, Labour, Zionism and how the technological revolution “is going to change everyone’s lives”. The event was sponsored by British philanthropists David and Judy Dangoor, who support scholarships for students at Bar-Ilan, and fund the Sir Naim Dangoor Programme for Universal Monotheism, to “take a universal message far beyond the borders of Israel about the ultimate unity of mankind”. Blair, praised as an advocate of science, told the audience he no longer recognised the Labour Party under Corbyn’s leadership. “This antisemitism row is a shameful thing. If you’d told me in 1997 or at any point in the next 10 years that the Party had a problem with antisemitism I would not have credited or believed it, and yet it is here today.” To applause from the audience, he added that antisemitism would “imperil the Labour Party – and it should, if it’s not rooted out and defeated” . Asked if he agreed with Luciana Berger’s claim that Labour was now “institutionally antisemitic,” Blair said: “I see why she says it… We’re

News / Al Quds Day
Labour antisemitism an ‘Israeli plot’ An Al Quds Day speaker has claimed the Israeli embassy runs “workshops” around the country to concoct false antisemitism claims to “smear” pro-Palestine activists, writes Mathilde Frot. Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign activist Mick Napier addressed protesters in Westminster at the annual protest on Sunday. “There’s a guy who’s just been suspended from the Labour Party for saying the Israeli embassy is behind the whole wave of false, phoney, fake, malicious antisemitism allegations,” he told the crowd – an apparent reference to Pete Willsman, the National Executive Committee member who was suspended last Friday. “It’s obvious. They don’t hide it. The Israeli embassy does it. They have workshops around the country where all the local Zios [a term considered antisemtic that that is also associated with far-right groups] get together.
“Christians and Muslims and Jews; they all get together, the Zios. Because there are some of each. They plot how to smear those of us who stand up for the Palestinian people. Your crime is to stand up for the noble people of Palestine,” Napier said. Protesters, who marched under a yellow banner marked “Victory to the resistance”, set off from outside the Home Office and walked to Whitehall in a procession led by the extreme Jewish fringe group Neturei Karta UK. A group of counter-demonstrators flying Israeli flags set off blue-coloured smoke bombs, and chanted “Free Palestine from Hamas”. Uniformed police formed a guard between the two groups in order to prevent a “breach of the peace” and stopped bystanders from joining. [N]

words: “From the river to the sea, single democratic state: Palestine, the only just solution.” Another sign read “Zionism = Racism Boycott Israel”, while some called for an end to the “Gaza genocide”. One demonstrator appeared to compare Zionism to Nazism. “The world stopped Nazism. The world stopped apartheid. The world must stop Zionism,” read his T-shirt.
Sunday’s Al Quds Day March was meant as a show of force rather than to initiate even a semblance of a conversation on the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. From placards describing Zionism as “racist” to chants labelling Israel as a “terrorist state”, I realised that not many, if any, of the protesters I encountered along the way were pushing for a peaceful, two-state solution. As I weaved in and out of the crowd, armed with a smartphone and navigating gory placards and slogans, it quickly became apparent that hostility and suspicion reigned among the hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Home Office. “Which side are you on?” a cagey organiser asked almost immediately before escorting me out. What a devastating question to put to a member of the press, I thought – and a surprising
only too happy to talk to the media. Why march through the streets of central London, if you don’t wish to attract coverage? But as the goading voice of Nazim Ali, head of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, blasting from loudspeakers, warned the crowd against “fascist infiltrators”, I realised that this wasn’t just a typical protest seeking to shine a light on a particular issue – it was meant to intimidate. Indeed hours later, I was standing among the crowd filming an Al Quds Day speaker accuse the Israeli embassy of running anti-
semitism smear workshops when an organiser asked me to leave, suspecting me of being a counter-demonstrator seeking to breach the peace. As she pointed a handheld camera device at me, which she had presumably brought in to capture incriminating footage of counter-demonstrators, I felt sad and a little angry. But thankfully, the Islamic Human Rights Commission is not part of a broader, larger movement sweeping the country. Indeed, moments away from the protest, tourists and ordinary Londoners went about their day paying no heed to the belligerent slogans and loud speeches.

Sugar: Galloway is a ‘bloody liar’ Lord Sugar has stepped into the bitter row over George Galloway’s “antisemitic” Twitter comments about Saturday’s Champions League football final. The Apprentice star clashed with the former MP, who was was sacked by TalkRadio this week after welcoming Tottenham’s defeat in the final as it prevented “Israel flags on the cup”. Lord Sugar, a former chairman of Spurs, accused Galloway of “talking a load of garbage as usual”, speaking on Good Morning Britain, alongside Galloway. He was responding to Galloway’s claim that Tottenham fans wave Israel flags, and told host Piers Morgan: “I was at the Champions League game this week. I walked with 15,000 Tottenham fans and Liverpool fans. I did not see and have never seen an Israeli flag flown. The fans had all their blue and white stuff. Never seen an Israeli flag flown.” He then furiously accused Galloway of being a “bloody liar, a total liar”, who interrupted Sugar,

Just Google it and you’ll see hundreds of them [flags].”Sugar replied: “Shut your mouth, shut your mouth for a minute and let someone else talk.” When asked if he would apologise, Galloway said: “My team Celtic got heavily fined because a significant section of the Celtic crowd waved Palestinian flags. If Alan Sugar had said, if Celtic in the unlikely event had lost a cup final, there’ll be no Palestinian flags on the cup, that would have been an
attack on the Palestinian political entity and its flag. And that would have been his right and he would have done it.” Asked to say sorry, Galloway insisted: “Israel is not Judaism. Judaism is not Israel. I love Jews. I don’t like Israel.” Severing ties with Galloway, TalkRadio said: “As a fair and balanced news provider, TalkRadio does not tolerate antisemitic views.”

Jeremy Corbyn and union chief Len McCluskey led tributes to the leftwing Jewish activist Walter Wolfgang, who has died aged 95. Corbyn (pictured with Wolfgang) said he was a “dear friend and moral leader”. He was forcibly removed from the Labour Party conference in 2005 for shouting “nonsense” as then
ForeignSecretary, JackStraw, “extolled the virtues of the British occupation of Iraq”. Born in Frankfurt in 1923, Wolfgang had to flee the Nazis 14 years later, in 1937, arriving in Britain as a teenage refugee. His parents remained in Germany, where their business was confiscated, and his father was taken to Buchenwald. Although his parents escaped to Britain, they were interned as enemy aliens. It left an impression on Wolfgang, who said he had seen “first-hand the terrible consequences of a political doctrine based on hatred”.

News / Child sexual abuse inquiry
Jewish children shamed into silence over abuse Shame and guilt stop religious children reporting sexual abuse, according to the damning findings of a two-year investigation by the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The conclusions draw on the anonymised testimony of 1,697 people who experienced child sexual abuse in religious institutions, including 183 survivors. It also heard from 1,514 people who experienced abuse in non-religious settings. They came forward as part of the Truth Project, the Inquiry, chaired by Professor Alexis Jay (pictured) said. It found that children abused in a religious setting were far less likely to report it than those abused in a non-religious setting. Only three in 10 reported sexual abuse in a religious institution, whereas just under half reported it elsewhere. It also found that the type of abuse can alter quite dramatically. In religious settings, fondling was almost twice as likely as penetration (62 percent compared to 32 percent), whereas in non-religious set-
tings fondling was reported in 54 percent of cases and penetration reported in 50 percent. More than a third of those who did not report the abuse in a religious setting said “shame” was the primary reason while a fifth said “guilt” was the main reason. Dr Sophia King, principal researcher, said: “It is clear feelings of shame and embarrassment created a huge barrier to children disclosing abuse, as did the power and authority bestowed upon their abusers.” Those abused in a religious institution were almost five times more likely to report it to a person of authority within that institution, and less likely to report it to the police. Almost a fifth of survivors reported a loss of faith as a result of the abuse, while 48 percent said they “knew of others being abused by the same perpetrator”. Stamford Hillborn Yehudis Goldsobel was abused by Chabad supporter Menachem Mendel Levy, who was jailed for it in 2013. She now leads Migdal Emunah, an
organisation dedicated to helping Jewish survivors of sexual abuse, and said the inquiry’s finding that half knew of others being abused by the same perpetrator was “not a surprise”. Speaking to Jewish News about the report, she said: “It is on a par with our own findings and shows how we have serial offenders in the Jewish community that institutions know about, but continually fail to respond appropriately because they prioritise their institutions and reputations over the welfare of young people.” Alongside the report, the Truth Project published 60 accounts of survivors. The report adds to growing pressure on the Government to tighten safeguarding in religious institutions, and comes just weeks after the Inquiry announced a new investigation into child protection in religious settings, with synagogues and yeshivas now included as well as youth groups and summer camps. “We encourage every Jewish victim and survivor to get involved and send evidence to the new strand, which is clearly a response to what the Inquiry has heard in the last two years,” said Goldsobel. “We’ve needed something like this for years.” Editorial comment, page 18
Our response to abuse needs transformation BY YEHUDIS GOLDSOBEL
MIGDAL EMMUNAH The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse report rings true. It provides valuable data confirming what many of our clients at Migdal Emunah have shared, and my own experience. Some of the key findings are on par with what we see, including shame and embarrassment preventing victims from reporting the sexual abuse. However, what is specific to this survivor group is the reported level of power and authority bestowed upon religious institutions as well as those working within them. This often meant perpetrators were not questioned when allegations were raised, leaving offenders with further opportunities to abuse. Unsurprisingly, almost 50 percent of participants said they knew of someone else abused in the same institution compared to 35 percent in non-religious spheres. This is a familiar phenomenon within our own community, where known offenders went unquestioned or unreported to the authorities, mostly because we don’t offer victims and survivors support to report abuse. Furthermore, we don’t support those with abuse concerns, such as youth workers and educators. Many Jewish children attend Jewish schools, so what happens when the school, shul and home life become too entwined? There is no infrastructure to handle safeguarding concerns and, more often than not, they go unreported, leaving children at further risk. Victims and survivors reported the high level of involvement religious institutions had over their communities’ daily lives provided perpetrators with
❝
the prospect of using the child’s spirituality and religious practices for manipulation. How easy this becomes when we have religious institutions providing all our cultural lifestyle needs. Priority was always given to the protection of the religious institution and the perpetrator, often at all costs. This meant victims and survivors were unsupported at best, discredited at worst. Communal leaders and institutions are more focused on the offender’s rights and reintegration than safeguarding children and young people. Almost half of victims and survivors – 48 percent – chose to report to a person of authority within the institution compared to 29 percent in non-religious institutions. We must question this disparity, and stop pointing fingers at other sectors within the Jewish community, as this is prevalent across it all. Victims and survivors reported barriers to recovery when abused in a religious setting, as the abuse was associated with their religious faith as well as their communal infrastructure. This was compounded by the respect still received by perpetrators, while victims were ostracised and discredited, leaving vulnerable children and adults with a greater sense of loss. Everyone in the Jewish community who is in contact with children and young people needs better training. Many victims reported the adults around them failed to identify abuse, act appropriately, respond efficiently and, in some cases, caused further harm by responding inappropriately. Veteran Games / Special Report
Israel salutes hero veterans at Games closing ceremony by Justin Cohen In Tel Aviv and Jerusalem justinc@thejngroup.com @Cohenjust
President’s tribute to British and Israeli wounded soldiers at conclusion of inaugural Veteran Games Israel’s President has praised the “heroes” taking part in the first Veteran Games, bringing together wounded British and Israel veterans and their families. Reuven Rivlin hosted the UK delegation at his residence on the final day of the inaugural Veteran Games and mental health conference, which was conceived and developed by Beit Halochem UK’s Andrew Wolfson with the Israeli Embassy. Over five days, more than 100 veterans from both countries competed in a range of sports at the charity’s high-tech centres, with plenty of time to see the country and talk about their experiences in battle and rehabilitation. “I see true heroes here who served their country’s cause and went to war to preserve our values and protect us all. I would like to say: I salute you,” Rivlin said. “I’m proud and honoured to see our own IDF veterans who took part. I salute you too. You returned from battle. But there were those – your comrades and friends – who did not. Let’s pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.” Rivlin spoke fondly of hosting Prince William at Beit HaNassi, his official residence, last year, adding: “He and Prince Harry are great supporters of sports for injured veterans and talking more about mental health.” He told the group that Britain and Israel faced common enemies in terrorism, and share values such as freedom and democracy. East Minister and former navy officer Dr Andrew Murrison, who said he was “humbled” to be in such company. “I would like to congratulate Israel for hosting this,” he said. “They are truly inspirational and I hope this is the start of something that has a great future.” Murrison, who has previously written two reports on the treatment of veterans, said: “The mark of a decent society is the way it treats its veterans – that’s the essence of the military covenant. The armed forces in Israel and United Kingdom are the very best of us. “While the state can clearly never resolve entirely the suffering of those who have taken part in those conflicts, it’s our duty to do what we can. Sometimes we don’t do enough.” The minister, who was making his first visit to the region in his new role, said the bilateral relationship “couldn’t be closer and I look forward in the years ahead to the comradeship being cemented even further”. Speaking on behalf of the participants, Matt Tomlinson, one of the most decorated Marines with 28 years service before his retirement in 2017, said: “I can honestly say we will never forget this truly amazing experience.” The Games, he suggested, united “strangers
that meet but already know each other very well” through their military backgrounds. And he drew on a famous Royal Marines slang term, hoofing, meaning “beyond amazing”. To the delight of the vets, he told Rivlin: “Your veterans are hoofing. Your armed forces personnel are hoofing. This week has been hoofing. And we have had a proper hoofing time.” The programme was funded by donations from The Patron Charitable Initiatives, Pears Foundation, Rachel Charitable Trust, The WolfsonFamilyCharitableTrust,TheExilarch’s Foundation, The Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation and The Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust. The Chelsea Foundation was also a significant contributor. Many UK veterans spoke about the huge impact of the Games on their rehabilitation and on providing valuable quality time with their families. From low expectations and skewed perspectives on Israel before they came, a number are already hoping to return on holiday. By the time the group said farewell to each other last Thursday night, it was clear many did so as friends and confidants. Wolfson told Jewish News: “The first Israel-UK Veteran Games has surpassed all my expectations. The camaraderie between the participating veterans, their families and the academics will hopefully go on to forge an even closer relationship between our two countries.”
MY HOOFING WEEK AT THE REMARKABLE VETERAN GAMES BY JUSTIN COHEN NEWS EDITOR, JEWISH NEWS
I learnt a new word last week: hoofing. It’s Royal Marine slang to describe anything beyond amazing – and it couldn’t be more fitting to describe the inaugural Veteran Games. Beit Halochem UK and the Israeli Embassy were always on to a winner in bringing injured British soldiers and their families to Israel to meet and compete with IDF counterparts as part of their rehabilitation; it is
after all a tried and tested formula at the Invictus Games. Based on the Tel Aviv beach front, five days of fun in the Mediterranean sun was similarly guaranteed. But for many the trip’s impact has been profound, even lifechanging, and will be felt long after they’ve returned to their daily lives and struggles. For James Stobbs, who tried to take his own life amid crippling PTSD, the Games gave him a goal to aim for. Having previously been all but house-bound, attending the event was part of his exposure treatment and the fatherof-four said he returns to the UK
with far greater confidence. On the last night, he confided in me that he had suffered a panic attack in the crowded alleyways of the Old City during that day’s tour but, unusually, his young son came up to comfort him. And there were countless other stories of families being brought closer. Matt Tomlinson, one of the country’s most decorated Royal Marines who recently retired, told me how much it meant to spend the first nights ever with his two teenage boys after travelling the world for the last 28 years. Though inspired by Prince
❝
FOR MANY THE TRIP HAS BEEN LIFE-CHANGING Harry’s triumphant Invictus, the greatest success of the Veteran Games was in what set it apart. In focusing on camaraderie over competition, friendships bloomed. In making sport only part of the official schedule, there was plenty of time to relax and open up about experiences, sometimes for the first time.
In fully involving spouses and kids in half-term, whole families affected by war and rehabilitation enjoyed quality time together. And yes, in being immersed in the sites, culture and food of Israel, participants’ preconceptions of a country so often linked in public discourse with conflict was utterly transformed. As one participant said: “This has been the trip of a lifetime. We have made friends who will remain so for life. These Games have not only changed ours lives but changed us for life.” This event must become a fixture in the calendar.

Special Report / D-Day 75th anniversary
The Jewish D-Day heroes
Our community’s contribution to the pivotal event of the war is underestimated Today marks 75 years since D-Day, the largest seaborne invasion the world has ever seen and a key turning point in the war, but while many know D-Day was an intelligence triumph, experts say few appreciate the Jewish contribution to it, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Intelligence and deception were crucial in the run-up to Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi Europe from Normandy on 6 June 1944. There were several Allied deception efforts to throw the Nazis and their 50 armoured divisions patrolling the Atlantic coast off the Normandy scent. Chief among them was an operation to deceive Field Marshal Erwin Rommel into thinking the Allies’ 7,000 ships would land at Calais. Decoding the messages of the Nazi high command was crucial to knowing whether the deception had worked. The Allies, led by the US’ General Dwight D. Eisenhower, needed to know what the Germans suspected, what they were planning for, and where. The codebreaking at Bletchley Park is most famous for breaking the Nazis’ encrypted Enigma machine, but Hitler communicated with his generals with the Lorenz SZ/40/42. An opportunity arose after an error was picked up in a Lorenz message sent from

Athens to Vienna. After brilliant reverse engineering at Bletchley by matematicians and cryptographers Bill Tutte and John Tiltman, neither of whom were Jewish, the Allies were able to begin reading the Nazi generals’ messages to Hitler and vice versa. A special team,

comprising members of Alan Turing’s nowfamous Hut 8, was set up at Bletchley (known internally as the Testery) to decipher this highlevel intelligence, but there was a problem. “It was taking six to seven weeks to decrypt each message,” says Michael Kushner, a volunteer guide and lecturer at Bletchley Park, who gives talks to Jewish organisations about the community’s contribution to wartime signals intelligence. If D-Day was to be a success, the Allies needed to know in more-or-less real time what the Nazis were planning. Enter Max Newman. Born in Chelsea in 1897 to Jewish parents who had fled Poland, Newman grew up in Dulwich, excelled at chess as a child, studied maths at Cambridge and by 1942 was drafted in to work in the Testery. Newman felt Tutte’s methods could be mechanised and speeded up, so he convinced the operational head of Bletchley Park, Commander Edward Travis, to fund a separate team to do so. The department that became known as the Newmanry would soon house Colossus, the world’s first programmable digital computer, used to read the Nazis’ most secret messages.
Working with Newman were the brilliant Jewish mathematicians Jack Good and Peter Hilton. “Through their intellect and intelligence, they sped up the process of reading Hitler’s messages from weeks to 2.5 hours,” says Kushner. “From this information, the codebreakers informed Winston Churchill that Hitler had reinforced Calais with the mighty 15th Panzer division commanded by Gerd von Rundstedt and Irving Rommel. From this ultra-intelligence Operation Overlord went ahead and proved a resounding success. Eisenhower wanted 48 hours of no heavy resistance. We gave him 36 days.” Kushner says there were almost 200 Jewish personnel working at Bletchley Park during the Second World War, all of whom played their part in the downfall of Hitler. “Many became important figures post-war. Along with Alan Turing, the trio of Newman, Hilton and Good went to Manchester University to create the first programmable computers. “These are just a few of the Jewish personnel who worked at Bletchley Park during the war. It is underestimated the work they put into the success of what happened here.”

Seventy-five years on, the world is waking up to the contribution Jewish soldiers made to the largest military invasion ever staged, a leading archivist has said. Martin Sugarman estimates that “many hundreds, possibly thousands” of Jewish servicemen fought for the Allied troops between 6 June and 29 August 1944. Overall, approximately 65,000 British Jews served in the Second World War, including up to 3,000 in the Royal Navy and 25,000 in the Royal Air Force. Sugarman, who works with

Helpline launched / Charity trend / News
Helpline for sexual violence victims NOT JUST ANY KOSHER FOOD A range of kosher food and drink products was on sale last weekend at Marks and Spencer shops across the country for the first time. The retailer joins supermarket chains such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco, which have stocked kosher products at selected stores for some years. The range will include 22 items, such as Mrs Elswood cucumbers, Telma chicken stock, Rakusen’s matzo meal, and Osem chicken soup mix, but does not feature any refrigerated or frozen items. It will be available at 29 stores in London – including in West Hampstead, Muswell Hill, and Temple Fortune – Manchester, Glasgow, Essex, Leeds and Bournemouth.
Female Jewish victims of sexual violence are now able to seek support from counsellors and experts via a new helpline named after the biblical story of Dina, run by the Jewish Women’s Aid, writes Mathilde Frot. Jewish survivors of sexual
abuse aged over 16 can call for free information about their rights and any support services available to them. The helpline can be used for referrals to new services such as counselling or advice about reporting incidents to the police or the criminal justice system. It was funded in part by Comic Relief, which contributed £80,000 for the service over the next two years. Research by the Jewish Women’s Aid found
sexual abuse to be “massively under-reported” particularly in the community where some encounter a “wall of silence”. Jewish women wait on average a shocking 11.5 years before seeking help, according to the charity. More broadly, a quarter of women are affected by domestic abuse in their lifetimes, while one in five are survivors of sexual violence. Jewish Women’s Aid CEO Naomi Dickson says the figures show no difference in the scale and severity of the issue across UK communities. But she added: “Jewish women are reluctant to speak about their
experience of sexual violence due to anxiety about maligning the community’s image. “There is also a notion of shalom bayis (peace in the house) which makes it difficult for Jewish women to
come forward to speak out.” The Dina sexual violence support helpline is open from 10am until noon, and from 1pm to 3pm on Mondays and Thursdays and from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesdays.

Donors spark ‘charity revolution’ UK-Israel charity UJIA has said its donors are starting to move away from traditional giving towards “social impact investing” which delivers a financial return. The new model, outlined this week by the group’s interim chief executive, invests donors’

World News / Israeli election woes NEWS IN BRIEF
TRIBUTES PAID TO SOBIBOR SURVIVOR The last living Holocaust survivor who participated in the revolt and escape from Sobibor death camp has died, aged 97, in a hospital in Rehovot near Tel Aviv. Semyon Rosenfeld, who moved to Israel from the Ukraine in 1990, died on Monday and is survived by his two sons and five grandchildren. He had been living in a retirement community in central Israel. After escaping the infamous camp, Rosenfeld survived by hiding in the woods with a handful of other prisoners.
JERUSALEM DAY EVENT IS PEACEFUL Tens of thousands of Israeli youths gathered in the Old City of Jerusalem for the annual Flag March celebrating Jerusalem Day. The march takes the students from national religious high schools, yeshivas and seminaries and other institutions through the Muslim and Jewish Quarters of Jerusalem. The event has frequently caused tension between Jews and Arabs. There were no security incidents during Sunday afternoon’s march.
Bibi leading Israel ‘into total chaos’ Opposition leader Benny Gantz kicked off his election campaign this week by accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of leading the country into “total chaos” and attacking his decision to call an election for the second time in just six months as a “farce” and “national joke”. Israel’s newly-elected Knesset dissolved itself in a 74-45 vote last week and set a new election date of 17 September. The developments were a shocking setback for Netanyahu, who had appeared to secure a comfortable win in last month’s election, but was unable to build a parliamentary majority needed to rule because a traditional ally, Avigdor Lieberman, refused to
Avigdor Lieberman
bring his Yisrael Beiteinu faction into the coalition. Netanyahu, who has led Israel for a decade, now faces another challenge. It comes as he prepares for a pre-indictment hearing before expected criminal charges against him in a series of corruption cases. Assuming they would sweep into power again, Netanyahu’s allies in the ruling Likud had begun drafting a contentious bill aimed at granting him immunity from any corruption charges. He was also looking to push legislation limiting the power of the Supreme Court and paving his path to more years in office. But it was a separate issue that sparked the unprecedented crisis, and for the first time in history thrust Israel into a repeat election before a new government was formed. Lieberman demanded that current legislation mandating that young strictly-Orthodox men be drafted into the military run its course. Years of exemptions for strictlyOrthodox men have
Down but not out? Netanyahu
generated widespread resentment among the rest of Jewish Israelis who serve. The strictly-Orthodox, backed by Netanyahu, refused to bend and the showdown quickly became a fullblown crisis. “The public chose me, and Lieberman, unfortunately, deceived his voters. From the beginning he had no intention to do what he said,” Netanyahu said after the vote, accusing Lieberman of aligning with “the left”. Lieberman retorted that Netanyahu’s stance was “a complete surrender of Likud to the ultra-Orthodox”.
ELECTION PLOT NEEDS REVISING In July, Benjamin
BY JAMES Netanyahu will break David Ben Gurion’s SORENE
record and become Israel’s longest serving leader. Bibi wanted to celebrate this milestone as the triumphant leader of a right-wing coalition, serving his fifth term in office, exuding strength and success. Instead, he is back on the campaign trail, fighting his second election in six months. His Likud party didn’t win the 9 April election. It was a score draw of 35 seats between Likud and Benny Gantz’s Blue and White Party. But Bibi was asked by President Reuven Rivlin to form a government because he was recommended by the leaders of the strictly-Orthodox parties. It seemed like he would form a stable 65 seat majority in the 120 member Knesset, but he failed to find a deal. Netanyahu, who faces indictment for bribery, fraud and breach of trust, pending a hearing, in three criminal cases is in a weak position so his potential coalition partners responded with maximalist demands over the recruiting of more strictly-Orthodox men into the army. The last election was a battle between Likud and the Blue and White Party. But now, Gantz and Yesh Atid’s Yair Lapid must win over Likud voters. If they fail again we could see a repeat of the past few months with the same characters reaching the same political stalemate. CEO, BICOM

Operation Good Neighbour / Special Report
‘Syrians who fled in fear were happy to see Israel’ IDF veteran Eyal Dror tells Adam Decker about Israel’s five-year scheme that’s saved the lives of thousands of Syrians
T
he senior Israel Defense Forces officer who arranged for thousands of Syrians to get treatment in Israeli hospitals as civil war raged has said the people they helped “will not forget” it. Lt Col Eyal Dror, who recently retired, served in the IDF for 24 years and wrapped up Operation Good Neighbour last year, telling Jewish News that his unit’s mission to change Syrian minds about Israel had been successful. Dror took command of a Golan Heights team in June 2016, after Israeli leaders decided that help for Syrians living near the border should be stepped up. His team later led the evacuation of the White Helmets, the renowned Syrian humanitarians forced to flee by the advancing forces of President Assad’s regime. Now living on a kibbutz in the north, Dror said that Israeli soldiers began helping on an ad hoc basis in 2013, when one night – out of the blue – seven wounded Syrians approached the border. “We were watching from our side and wanted to help them,” he said. “But we had to be careful. They have been taught to hate us for decades. I met hundreds of Syrians and they all said they are educated against us, probably they don’t even know why. “They were there in Syria – no electricity, no healthcare, no water, wounded, desperate, so they approached the fence with a lot of fears. They came slowly. We opened the fence and took them to an Israeli hospital. It saved their lives. Since then 4,500 Syrian men, women and children reached Israel and got life-saving treatment.” This went on for three years under a media blackout until Dror was asked to increase the Israeli efforts as part
of COGAT (Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories). The significance of what Israel did in those years still isn’t fully understood. “Think about it – the IDF decided to establish a unit that works 24/7 to help the enemy. Today I know it was a huge privilege, but at the time I didn’t know what was going to happen.” In order to be successful, he said, the army “had to build trust between us, let them understand us a bit better, let them see we’re not here for PR, because all our operations were under cover from the media – they couldn’t publish it”. The first operation was to take 50 Syrians (25 children and their mothers) to Israeli hospitals every week, but the numbers soon grew. “This was not life-saving surgery for children, but treatment for chronic conditions like diabetes,” he says. Surgeons operated 70 times in those first few weeks, as pre-arranged groups came to the fence at 4am and IDF soldiers took them by bus to meet the doctors. They were in Israel for about 10 hours, said Dror, and most were in a sorry state. “As a human being, as a father of three, to see these Syrian children, it was one of the worst sights I ever saw in my life. They had no shoes. They smelled like a bonfire because they had no electricity or fuel so they were just burning everything to heat themselves. They had no water so couldn’t shower, their clothes were dirty… It was a very hard sight to see. “I once asked a 12-year-old boy what he wanted to be when he was an adult. He just stared at me. I asked him again. My Arabic is good so he understood. The third time he told me: ‘Sir, probably I won’t be an adult.’ I asked why. He said two months ago his friends were killed in
the bombing so probably his future will be like this also.” Dror said the IDF soldiers decided to “let the children be children” for their brief time in Israel, buying them chocolate, letting them play ballgames and watch YouTube, adding: “It was amazing to see the trace of a smile.” They appreciated it. “We bought them teddies from our own money. They had no possessions, [so] for them it was all the world, they hugged [the toys] so tight. We did the right thing and let them enjoy life a little bit. When we drove them back to the border, to hear them say toda (thank you), to see Syrian children hug IDF soldiers, nobody can imagine this.” The operation was much bigger than teddy bears and chocolate: in just over two years, the IDF helped to set up a field hospital behind the fence on the Syrian side, delivered medical equipment for a neonatal hospital, gave 2,000 tonnes of food, more than a million litres of diesel fuel, a generator, and 50,000 items of clothing. “When the temperature is below zero, a coat for a three-year-old can save his life,” Dror says. Last summer, the Assad regime launched offensives against the rebels in the south, prompting 40,000 Syrians to flee. “They were living in the field with nothing, just a bag they took from home,” says Dror. “We sent 700 tents so they could hide from the strong Golan sun.” The last operation was the 10-hour rescue of 420 people comprising White Helmets and their families. These Syrian humanitarians were supported by Europe, so when regime forces closed in, they became targets. The Europeans asked Israel to help. “I took the call. It was Friday afternoon. I co-ordinated it and they came the next night. It was incredible. They were leaving their homeland, now a

place of fear, and coming to Israel and feeling relief. Their worst enemy saves their lives.” Dror said he didn’t know much about the White Helmets until after he took them to Jordan, but was now full of respect. “For me, if somebody risks their life to save another life, they’re a brilliant man. I was glad we were able to help them. It was a privilege.” Asked whether he thought his team had changed Syrian minds about Israel, he said: “I don’t think, I know. It’s not just the SMS messages, letters
and pictures [I got] from Syrians that prove it but other things. For example, in Islamic rules, Arabic women will not shake the hand of a man. Here, they shook my hand in thanks. Children were drawing the flags of Israel and giving them to Israeli soldiers. “So for sure it changed minds just a little bit. They have now met Israelis and know we helped them in their toughest years. They know we are not as they were taught. Nobody in this area of Syria, with 250,000 people, will forget what the state of Israel did.” Israeli soldiers on the Syrian border provided food and medical aid for thousands of Syrians fleeing dictator President Bashar al-Assad as part of Israel’s Operation Good Neighbour project, which began in 2013

IDF educational trip to Ukraine
A senior IDF officer taking part in the project
More than 40 serving Israeli officers have taken part in a unique week-long programme in Ukraine, as part of the Mahut Project. Now in its ninth year, the project was launched in partnership between the Genesis Philanthropy Group, the Israeli Defence Forces Education and Youth Corps and the American Friends of the IDF. It aims to bring senior IDF officers from all branches of service to Russian-speaking communities, with the intention of linking them to their heritage and culture. Previous delegations have visited Lithuania and Latvia and have learned about Jewish history in the Baltic region. This year, the group visited Ukraine, specifically to places that have become important in Jewish history. Commemoration ceremonies
for victims of the Holocaust took place at extermination sites, but there were also opportunities to meet members of present Ukrainian Jewish communities. Mahut is often described as a life-changing experience for participants. The aim is to strengthen the Israeli and Jewish identity of IDF officers and non-commissioned officers and to develop and enhance the bonds between IDF commanders and the Jewish people. Specifically, the project aims to expose the IDF’s future leadership to the history and cultural heritage of Russian-speaking Jewry — and the contemporary life of Russian-speaking Jewish communities in the diaspora. When the officers return from the former Soviet Union, they either join, or create, various projects to encourage new immi-
grants and their children, as well as populations with special needs, to embrace meaningful service in the IDF. Lt-Col Mika Goldstein, who is responsible for the delegation on behalf of the IDF, said: “This is a journey of learning – intellectual, academic and emotional. The officers who took part in Mahut missions over the years testify that the programme provided them with the opportunity to learn, examine and shape their identity as IDF commanders.” Natalie Shnaiderman, director of global grantmaking for the Genesis Philanthropy Group, said: “We believe direct contact with Jewish history and Jewish communities in the diaspora is an important tool in building the Jewish identity of the younger generation of Russian-speaking Jews in Israel.”

ARCHIVES PUBLISH CAMP DOCUMENTS The International Tracing Service in Bad Arolsen, Germany, has published online more than 13 million documents from Nazi concentration camps – with information on more than 2.2million people. The tracing service, now called the Arolsen Archives-International Centre on Nazi Persecution, consists of millions of documents, including prisoner cards and death notices, featuring information on Holocaust victims and others persecuted by the Nazi regime. They are part of Unesco’s World Documentary Heritage and are a key focus of the collections. This database is the first of several large collections to go online and was undertaken in partnership with Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. “It is so important the original documents can speak to coming generations, in the survivors’ place.”
SWEDISH CONFERENCE Tunisian ministers join Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has announced his country is to host an international conference on antisemitism next year in memory of the Holocaust. The gathering for heads of state and government will be held in Malmo, southern Sweden, on 27 and 28 October 2020 – 20 years after the Declaration of the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust and 75 years after the liberation of Auschwitz. Lofven told AFP: “You find antisemitism in Sweden, in Europe and all over the world. Antisemitism isn’t only a Jewish problem, it is a poison for all of society”. The choice of Malmö as the venue is controversial because the city has been the light-

NETHERLANDS IN CIRCUMCISION ROW Two of the best-known mohelim — circumcisers — in the Netherlands will be called in for questioning by the Dutch Health Ministry as part of a crackdown on people who carry out the procedure without qualifications. Herman Loonstein is a wellknown lawyer who has performed about 2,000 circumcisions. He and Meir Villegas Henríquez, another mohel, are due to be questioned by the ministry’s inspection team. A ministry spokesman told Dutch TV: “It is not correct that anyone may perform circumcision because circumcision is a religious freedom or because they are proficient in it. We will hold to account the people who break the law.” Jaap Sijmons, a lecturer on medical law, said that the law forbids any operation by anyone not registered as a medical professional.
ning rod for numerous antisemitic attacks and demonstrations in recent years. In December 2017, after President Trump announced the US would recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, 200 demonstrators in a Malmö central square shouted that “an intifada has been proclaimed from Malmö and we will shoot the Jews”. The following day, another crowd gathered to shout that “Jews must remember the army of Mohammed will return”. Sweden recognised a Palestinian state in 2014, but Lofven, a Social Democratic leader, has taken an outspoken stance against antisemitism.
Germany hands over Brod papers Germany’s Federal Criminal Police (BKA) has handed over thousands of stolen, previously unknown papers from the Max Brod Archive to National Library of Israel officials, at an event at the Israeli a m b a s s a d o r ’s residence in Berlin. The current ambassador, Jeremy Issacharoff, is British by birth and an ex-pupil of Hasmonean Grammar School. Author, composer and playwright Max Brod (pictured) was a close friend of Franz Kafka, and the man responsible for bringing his famous works to light. The event was part of the renewal process undertaken
by the National Library and the expansion of its international co-operation initiatives, including a range of projects with German research institutions. The Library’s chairman, David Blumberg, and its chief executive, Oren Weinberg, arrived in Berlin to present the its collections and goals to leading members of German society – and to receive the first tranche of the Max Brod papers, including his letters, drafts of plays, diaries and other manuscripts. Brod published many of Kafka’s works after the author’s death in 1924 – despite his wish they be burnt.
Lag B’Omer festivities
Hundreds of people, many from outside Tunisia, gathered on the island of Djerba last week to celebrate the Lag B’Omer festival at the ancient Ghriba synagogue. For the first time in more than 30 years, Lag B’Omer, which starts 33 days after the beginning of Pesach, coincided with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. And to mark the occasion, Jews joined Muslims in an Iftar – a meal marking the end of fasting during Ramadan. For several years, the Djerba Lag B’Omer event has been organised by René Trabelsi – but this year is special, because Trabelsi is now the Tunisian tourism minister, the first Jewish cabinet minister in decades. His appointment meant other ministers attended the celebrations, too. One French participant, Laura Tuil-Journo, told the Times of Israel that the festival was packed this year because of confidence in Trabelsi. She noted it was not so easy to organise celebrations while Muslims were fasting, but
Lag B’Omer celebrations in Djerba
added: “We are as welcome as usual.” Djerba used to attract more than 80,000 visitors for Lag B’Omer, but the numbers dropped dramatically. Tunisia has had a rough time in recent years because of terrorism. A 2002 suicide bombing at the synagogue, claimed by Al-Qaeda, killed 21 people. In 2015, there were terror attacks at a museum and a tourist resort, which left dozens dead.

GERMANY
Germans of all faiths and none were urged to don a kippah in Berlin and show solidarity with the country’s Jewish community on Saturday, the same day anti-Israel demonstrators marked the wildly anti-Israel al-Quds Day in the city centre. It comes just days after the government’s antisemitism adviser controversially said it may not be safe for Jews to wear kippot in cities.

Editorial comment and letters VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
It takes a village to protect our children
It takes a village to raise a child, and a village to protect one from abuse. That is why each and every one of us should read – and heed – the latest report from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse. This isn’t related any individual case. Instead, it summarises the themes to emerge from hundreds of interviews by those who experienced sexual abuse as children in religious institutions. It creates a clear picture of what child sexual abuse looks like in a synagogue, yeshiva, after-school class, youth group or summer camp. It shows what type of abuse is more likely. It shows whether victims are likely to report it, and to whom. It shows what emotions dictate a victim’s actions and what happens to them after the abuse. We hear their anonymised voices, their harrowing descriptions. Shame on us if we, as Jews, feel we have nothing to learn from this, if we feel this doesn’t apply to us, if we feel “it could never happen here”. It could. And it does. The inquiry’s initial remit was too limited – boarding schools and such. Now, two years later, enough have come forward to say: “Actually, I was abused here, not there.” So it has just announced a new investigation that will peel off the closed lid of religious institutions – places of worship, culture, preparation, education. This includes yeshivot, shuls, extra-curricular classes, camps, youth groups… the works. Are we ready? Are we really that confident that we’re bulletproof? We’ll see. In the meantime, those with any sense are best advised to look again, and to tighten up. CONTACT DETAILS Publisher and Editor Richard Ferrer 020 7692 6929 richardf@thejngroup.com

Trump’s substance over style As president of the Board of Deputies I spoke out against Donald Trump’s rancorous and divisive language. I wish it were otherwise but he remains a divisive figure. His style can be unattractive and frankly unbecoming of the high office he holds. At the same time I believe he has made the right calls on key issues for the Jewish world, such as opening the American embassy in Israel’s capital city of Jerusalem and rejecting the dangerous agreement on Iran’s nuclear weapons programme. He has rightly moved away from Barack Obama’s policies which radiated weakness and

EQUALITIES WATCHDOG PROBE INTO LABOUR IS BETTER LATE THAN NEVER Regarding the equalities watchdog launching a full probe into claims of Labour antisemitism, well, better late than never (Jewish News, 30 May 2019). It is hoped that the veil will be lifted and the denial of institutional antisemitism by the upper echelons of the Labour Party and their members will be unmasked. With news that this investigation might take at least a year, I trust it does not imitate the seemingly never-ending investigation by the Labour Party itself, regarding outbursts by Ken Livingstone, who had the audacity to state openly that Hitler was a Zionist

THANKS FOR VOTING, BARNET To the 27,423 Barnet residents who voted for us in the recent European Elections, a huge thank you for your vote in confidence. Your support really matters. As the Tories and Labour continue to look inwards and fight among themselves, our country has been left listless. Investments have frozen, industries are closing and jobs will be lost if we continue to allow Brexit to happen. Here in Barnet, our three Conservative MPs, sitting on small majorities, must now stop ignoring the legitimate concerns that all residents of Barnet, not just the 62 percent who voted Remain, have over the damage Brexit is doing to our economy and society. With the Leave vote merely switching from the purple of UKIP to the cyan of the Brexit Party, the call from residents to
stop Brexit is now loud and clear. Barnet values international connections, trade and the environment. So do we. Thanks once again for putting your faith in Sir Vince Cable’s (pictured) party. We will continue fighting on your side from the issues on your street to our membership of the European Union. Alasdair Hill Barnet Liberal Democrats
Why apply for a German passport? We read about the recurring antisemitism in Germany, that it’s wise not wear a scull cap or anything that shows you’re Jewish. So it amazes me that Jews are applying for German passports, in case we leave the EU. Why they wish to live in Germany is beyond me. Is the history of that nation not enough to
warn them of what is taking place, there and in other parts of Europe? We here are not too far away from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who some view as antisemitic, becoming prime minister. Let’s hope this will not happen.

On the very edge of the cliff is The New Normal JENNI FRAZER
T
here is a strange feeling abroad, of being almost, but not quite, at the edge of a cliff. And it applies in America, Israel, and – of course – Britain. Sample number one, America. The last weekend of May was the annual convention of California Democrats in San Francisco. What you might have expected to be debated in front of such big Democratic beasts as Elizabeth Warren and Bemie Sanders – both vying for the Democratic nomination to run against Trump next year – were economic and social issues. What I – perhaps naively – did not expect was a group of resolutions about Israel and Palestine, tabled by hard-left delegates, one of whom, inevitably, David Mandel, is Jewish. Well, OK, I did expect resolutions about Israel, given Trump’s much-hyped magic Middle East plan, to be unveiled any hour now. What really appalled me was the casual wording of one of these resolutions,
which linked the shootings of 11 innocent Jews in Pittsburgh last year to Israel’s “wilful” association with white supremacists in the US. Tweak that resolution just a smidgen and look what you get: the repellent Pete Willsman, blaming Israel for antisemitism in the Labour Party. As it happens, the California resolutions did not get debated and were withdrawn by their sponsors. But the fact that they were even considered for debate should concern people about what I will call The New Normal. Sample number two: Israel. A wildly angry Benjamin Netanyahu, hardly able to believe that he was not going to be able to form a coalition after his wafer-thin victory in the 9 April elections, has virtually frothed at the mouth and used his trademark description of “weak leftist” to disparage none other than Avigdor Lieberman. Lieberman, Bibi’s former ally, is the absolute antithesis of a left-winger and never met one he couldn’t even be bothered to spit on, but the truth is that the combination of an embattled prime minister, facing corruption

SO MANY PEOPLE ARE RUNNING TO BE MAY’S SUCCESSOR THAT IT IS SIMPLER TO SAY WHO IS NOT RUNNING
charges, and the lightning rod issue of exemption from military service for the strictly Orthodox, has lit a fire under Israeli politics. Two elections in a year is not normal, even for Israel. Sample number three: Britain. The story so far – we have no prime minister – well, we do, but in name only. There are so many people running to be Theresa May’s successor that it is almost simpler to say who is not running. But the message of one of the candidates last week struck me as both weird and selfserving, nothing to do with who should lead
Britain, and everything to do with making political capital. Dominic Raab has devoted an entire campaign video to using the story of his Czech Jewish refugee father, Peter, to attack the Labour Party over antisemitism. I watched this video twice but still can’t figure out why anyone backing Raab for prime minister should buy this approach. Does slagging off Corbyn specifically over antisemitism – though, God knows, he is a legitimate target – make Raab a better candidate than Michael Gove or (shudder) Boris Johnson? This race is meant to be about Brexit, not antisemitism. Why invoke his long-dead father (Peter Raab died in 1986) to polish his credentials? Then I remembered that Raab, while still Brexit Secretary, came under fire for saying he “hadn’t quite understood” how reliant UK goods trade is on the Dover-Calais crossing. In other words, Raab was reaching for whatever worked, to improve his bid. I have news for him: this is not normal, and it didn’t.

central religious principal within Judaism is hakarat hatov, literally translated as “recognition of goodness”. Broadly understood it means showing gratitude. Hakarat hatov obliges us in all our personal relationships and daily affairs. Some might say that gratitude is merely common decency, which contributes to harmony within society and speaks for itself. True though that is, the considerable attention this trait receives in rabbinic teaching is testimony to the tendency people have to overlook it and take the friendship and kind deeds of others for granted. There were remarkable cases of non-Jews in Germany and Nazi-occupied countries who risked their freedom and even their lives to protect Jews during the Holocaust. Some were private people who hid Jewish friends and neighbours when they were being rounded up for deportation. Others were public officials such as Raoul Wallenberg and Chiune Sugihara, who bravely devised
mechanisms to enable Jews to escape to safety across borders. Such individuals were rightly honoured as heroes after the Second World War and publicly acclaimed at Yad Vashem and elsewhere as “righteous gentiles”. What could warrant greater hakorat hatov than saving Jewish lives? We live in a world of increasing uncertainty and foreboding. Although there are currently no countries where Jews are officially being persecuted, antisemitism within societies themselves is rapidly on the rise, as we constantly see. So on the infrequent occasions that non-Jewish politicians really go out of their way to oppose antisemitism, to stand up for Jewish needs or support Israel, hakorat hatov is called for. Theresa May is one such person. Although she will hardly go down in history as a successful leader, she ought to be saluted wherever possible by the Jewish community as one of the most steadfast friends our community has ever had at No 10. Her personal solid support for Israel, for legislation against the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, widening the definition of antisemitism, funding Jewish security, Holocaust education and a host of other pro-Jewish

AS AMERICAN PRESIDENT, TRUMP HAS PROVEN TO BE A STATESMAN OF HUGE DETERMINATION measures, have been second to none. The only criticism would be in the field of faith schools, which are under pressure to teach relationship subjects that are religiously forbidden, but it could be that the Department of Education is outside the prime minister’s practical control. Head and shoulders above all, in my book, is Donald Trump. Personality-wise, he may not be everyone’s avuncular photo pin-up. However, as an American president, he has so far proven to be a statesman of huge determination and courage, and for the Jewish world a political angel. He has put the security of and alliance with the state of Israel at the top of his agenda, recognising more than any predecessor the state’s crucial role as a bastion of Western democracy. Trump has valiantly combatted Islamic terrorism and single-mindedly refused to appease the world’s most dangerous regime
– Iran. He has officially recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the annexation of the Golan. He alone freed Sholom Rubashkin from an unjust term of imprisonment. Most of these were the fulfilment of pre-election promises, demonstrating – untypically for politicians – that he is a man of his word. It sickens me beyond expression that despite Trump’s outstanding track record, no doubt encouraged by his Jewish son-in-law and now-Jewish daughter, there are so many Jews who continue to participate in the liberal-lefty chorus condemning him as racist and Islamophobic. He is neither. I write these words on the eve of Trump’s visit to the UK. One can only hope British Jews will be prominent among those welcoming the president in a spirit of trans-Atlantic hakarat hatov, rather than joining with our detractors and kicking him in the teeth.

id that really happen? Did the Israeli Knesset really vote to dissolve itself only 50 days after the election? As Israelis prepare to return to the ballot box in September, we must avoid seeing the forthcoming elections as a Groundhog Day scenario. While it might feel as if we are simply winding back the clock and repeating the last elections, the reality is that the political landscape in Israel has changed remarkably – and in ways to which we should be alert. The most proximate reason for Benjamin Netanyahu’s failure to assemble a coalition was not reaching a consensus between Avigdor Lieberman, the head of the hardright, largely secular Yisrael Beitenu Party, and the strictly-Orthodox parties. They were unable to resolve their differences over Israel’s military draft law. Nobody knew what Lieberman – a former close associate but now a bitter rival of the prime minister – was really up to. Was he bluffing
or was he truly willing to torpedo the formation of a new right-wing government? Lieberman did not budge. So with the next election scheduled, we should not write it off as a simple replay of April’s. Two main things have changed. Firstly, the last election campaign was sullied by incitement and racism: mistrust of the ‘other’ became the norm, e.g. Arab citizens of Israel experienced outright attacks on their political participation. One (Jewish) MK even depicted himself literally shooting an Arab MK. This continued up until election day, with the Likud Party seemingly intent to deter Arab voter turnout by secretly installing cameras in polling stations. The scars do not easily disappear. We have also learned through the failed coalition negotiations what the terms were for the next prospective government. We learned the scope of the assaults on an independent judiciary and the balance of powers contemplated as the basis of a coalition. The prime minster tried to assemble a government premised on unconditional immunity from criminal responsibility, constitutional reforms to dismantle the
❝
THE PROPOSALS WE HAVE RECEIVED SPEAKS TO THE MANY ISRAELIS WORKING TO REBUILD TRUST power of the Supreme Court, and a commitment to some annexation of the West Bank. All of these challenges to Israeli democracy hang in the air as Israelis prepare for yet another round of elections. It takes a minute to really appreciate the gravity of this. Any one of these changes would transform Israel’s democratic structure and standing. Earlier this month, Israel’s Supreme Court President Esther Hayut warned that democracies are not invincible to the designs of those who seek to dismantle them. She is not the only concerned voice, as exemplified by the tens of thousands of Israelis who took to the streets almost two weeks ago to protest the planned Immunity Law. At the New Israel Fund (NIF), we are
proud to support Israelis who are defending Israel’s democratic institutions, protecting minority rights, and the integrity of the democratic process and the rule of law. They stand for the right of every citizen to exercise their right to vote. They stand for civil society and for a robust Arab-Jewish partnership on behalf of a democratic future for all Israelis. One small step we have taken is to launch an immediate response to the elections: a new and exciting Shared Society Grassroots Fund. This will give small grants to local initiatives in Israel doing high impact work to help bolster critical partnerships and rebuild trust between Jewish and Arab citizens. It will help ordinary Israeli citizens seeking to strengthen ties with their neighbours and set the right example for their children. The hundreds of proposals we have received speaks to the many, many Israelis far removed from the glare of national politics who are working to rebuild trust. These Israeli voices of tolerance and democracy are the future on which NIF is betting. And it is the path we know will prevail, whatever the coming months and September’s Knesset elections will bring.

ithin hours of Mrs May announcing she would resign the office of prime minister tomorrow, a succession of communal machers vied with each other in their search for words of praise for one of the worst prime ministers in British history. United Synagogue’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis declared: “The Jewish community will look back on the premiership of Theresa May with deep gratitude for her friendship – in particular, her commitment to challenging antisemitism wherever it is found, Holocaust memorial and the physical protection of our community.” Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl prophesied that British Jewry “will always appreciate her friendship and support”, and Jewish Leadership Council chair Jonathan Goldstein proclaimed that, given May’s “action against antisemitism as
home secretary… her government’s protection of faith schools, the proscription of Hezbollah and the strengthening of ties with Israel,” she had been “a true friend”. Had she? Let’s examine the record. Only last month, her government pushed through Parliament new regulations on Relationships & Sex Education in all English schools (including privately-funded faith schools) that are angrily contested by our Charedi brethren as well as by broader coalitions of Christian, Muslim and Jewish parents and educators. The planned £100million Holocaust Memorial (most of which cost will come from the hard-pressed taxpayer) in Victoria Tower Gardens, Westminster is the subject of bitter public controversy. Mirvis, Goldstein and van der Zyl may support it. Many British Jews do not. And so we come to Israel. On 23 December 2016 the UN Security Council approved by 14 votes to zero a resolution (2334) declaring all Israeli [that means Jewish] settlements in the West Bank and

So there can be no peace talks based on “land for peace” because according to 2334 the land in question is already Palestinian and not Israel’s to bargain with. But 2334 does not oblige the Palestinians to recognise Israel as a Jewish state. In the past, such spiteful resolutions were vetoed by the USA, one of the Council’s five permanent members. But in a parting shot
signalling his dislike of Bibi Netanyahu, US President Obama declined to use its veto. The UK is also a permanent Security Council member, so May could also have vetoed the resolution. She chose not to. She could at least have ordered the British representative to abstain. I accept that both as home secretary and as PM, Theresa May earmarked substantial sums of public money for Jewish communal defence, and that under her premiership, the Hezbollah terrorist group has been fully proscribed. But aren’t we entitled to these necessary measures of protection as of right? In her tearful resignation speech, May had the effrontery to quote Sir Nicholas Winton, the stockbroker who saved hundreds of Jewish children from the Nazis in Czechoslovakia . The fact is that of the 3,000 places theoretically available under the 2016 Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement Scheme, May capped the number at 480. Her failure to honour the spirit of the scheme amounted to a brutal repudiation of Winton’s humanitarian outlook and an obstinate denial of the legacy of this great British Jew.

100-SECOND INTERVIEW Celebrating our community’s centenarians...
Mazeltov! Joseph Winton Name: Joseph Winton Date of birth: 1919 Place of birth: Lodz, Poland Where do you live? How long have you lived there? Where did you live before?
My family left Poland in 1920, then lived happily in Brussels until the Second World War, when the Nazis invaded Belgium. My sister joined the underground and my brother and I fled, hiding on a train for nine days before arriving in Toulouse, France.
We boarded a ship with the Polish Army and I was so worried they would find out I was Polish from my passport and draft me into military service straight away, but we managed to get to the UK safely. I arrived in Plymouth with my brother, Jacques. We travelled to London and were taken to Chelsea Barracks. When they were sure we were refugees, they let us continue our journey, and we found our way to relatives living in the East End. I joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and my brother and I both survived the war. I lived in St John’s Wood when I first got married and then in Fitzalan Road in Finchley.
unique Trefousse leather gloves, which were supplied to Her Majesty the Queen.
What was your occupation before retirement?
I have a son, Philip, daughter, Daniella, and three grandchildren – Gideon, 20, Natalie, 18, and Benjamin, 13, who just celebrated his barmitzvah. I also have a big family of nephews and nieces, who joined me from Israel and Belgium for my 100th
When I started work, I changed my name from Weissberg to Winton. I began in business as an agent for French luxury women’s wear brand, Desarbre, and then ran a business selling
Were you married, and if so, for how long and to whom?
I met Ann Ahuva Armon in 1957 when she was visiting from Israel and we married in London soon after. We were happily married for 59 years. In 2005, Ann moved into Jewish Care’s Lady Sarah Cohen House, where she lived until she sadly passed away.

The Second World War, of course. The government announcement, early in the morning, told us to leave to France immediately or we’d have to be in military service. We left fast. Are older people given the respect they deserve in Britain today?
I think so. I had lovely messages wishing me well on Facebook on my 100th birthday from many people who don’t know me! If you could offer a piece of advice to today’s youngsters, what would it be?

He credits that sense of justice Best known for his novels, including the besteller Everything about how we treat animals to his Is Illuminated and his most recent Jewish upbringing, which he says book, Here I Am, the 42-year-old taught him there was “nothing more took a detour from fiction for his fundamental than the valuing of life”. He adds: “I am capable of distin2009 book, Eating Animals, which examines how society’s increasing guishing between the lives of humans hunger for meat has resulted in cata- and animals, but not dismissing the strophic effects on the environment lives of animals. It’s hard to imagine a person who feels the lives of animals and the farming industry as a whole. Now his book has been turned are totally unimportant to them. “The laws of kashrut, as I was into an award-winning documentary, which is directed by Christopher taught them, emphasised the ethical Quinn and narrated byactressNatalie component of respect to animals. “For me, this discomfort never went away and when my son was about to be born, I faced the prospect of having to make food choices for someone else. I felt an urgency I hadn’t felt before and began questioning what was important to me.” So began his journey into discovering more about where meat comes from – and the hefty price society is now paying, having discovered technologies that allow production on a scale never seen before in history. But he also discovered the agricultural industry was particularly secretive about its practices and found it near-impossible to access any farms. With no options left, Safran Foer joined a group of animal activists late at night and illegally accessed farms to see the stark reality for himself. He says: “This industry is particularly abusive and it’s kept from sight. If I wanted to see how my car was made, it wouldn’t be that hard to get access to the facility. If I wanted to see how my breakfast bagel was made, it wouldn’t be hard to go behind the counter and see the equipment – but if you wanted to see where your meat comes from, you’re out of luck.” Depicted as abusive, harmful and secretive, mass farming methods are certainly condemned by the film, but what of its necessity in making food more available and affordable? “What we consume today is an historically unprecedented amount of meat. Our eating habits have been transformed by factory farming and the fast food industry. When we eat 180 times more chicken per person
than we did a century ago, it’s because so much is eaten with the fingers of one hand while driving – something our parents and grandparents would never have done.”
Main, above and below: Stills from Eating Animals
What is the solution? The rise of plant-based food companies and imitation meat may be one way to counter factory farming, but the real answer for Safran Foer is much simpler. “Our biggest problem is our need to eat meat” he says. “We don’t need to become radical, we need to become more conservative, to revert to farming methods of the past and enjoy meat as a delicacy, like we used to, with our families around the table.”

Lifestyle / Jewish News meets... Baroness Rabbi Julia Neuberger
IT’S THE NEW OLD HATRED Baroness Rabbi Julia Neuberger speaks to Stephen Orysczszuk about her timely book on antisemitism
J
ulia Neuberger has several hats. She’s a baroness, a rabbi (soon to retire), an ethicist (appearing on BBC Radio 2’s Pause for Thought), a health leader (she chairs University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and an author. It’s the author’s hat she wears when we meet in a coffee shop near West Kensington to discuss her new book on antisemitism, but she’s happy to swap hats mid-conversation, mid-sentence even, and a joy when she does. Her book, Antisemitism: What It Is. What It Isn’t. Why It Matters, is one of several on the subject from Jewish luminaries in recent months. Among the first to wade into this arena was Community Security Trust (CST) policy head Dave Rich in 2016. Jewish sociologist Keith Kahn-Harris is the latest, launching his own book on antisemitism this month. So why buy Neuberger’s? In part, because of the book’s 69-year old trailblazing author – she was Britain’s first female rabbi to have her own synagogue, has been a household name for decades. Her views, which largely reflect those of the community, have long been heeded by those in power, but although her address book reads like a who’s who, you wouldn’t know that to meet her. There’s no pretence. What you see is what you get. Below: Protesting antisemitism in Labour
So what do we get with her book? It’s a ranging, mazing meander through history’s oldest hatred, which will prove educational to beginners and experts alike. For such a controversial subject, she largely avoids controversy. She criticises Israel’s 2018 Nation State Bill, but, arguably, it would be more controversial not to. Did she learn anything while writing it? “A huge amount,” she says, sipping her tea and fixing her gaze. “I suppose I knew the history, because I’m interested anyway, in a general knowledgeish, Jewish-ish sort of way but, for instance, I hadn’t understood the extent to which Jews themselves started believing in racial or eugenics theory, which began in the 1870s. “This is Jewish scientists believing in Jewish racial characteristics, in German race theory, and being strongly influenced by it! It’s fascinating. I didn’t know Jews took these ideas on, that they bought into them. It made me realise how deeply embedded in contemporary thought these antisemitic ideas of ‘race’ were. It’s hugely significant.” Her book is dedicated to the late great publisher George Weidenfeld, who co-founded the Weidenfeld & Nicolson publishing house, and to her late grandmother, Anna Schwab. “George was a member of my shul. He always told me it was my grand-
mother’s encouragement that set him out on his amazing career when she was chair of the welfare committee of the Refugee Committee in the 1930s and he was a newly-arrived refugee. “He never forgot it. When I became rabbi at West London Synagogue, he asked me over for lunch. I said, ‘That’s lovely, but why?’ He said, ‘Because of your grandmother.’ That was so touching.” Her book is educational, informative, logical, sensible and highly readable but, alas, imperfect, not least for its several sweeping, unsubstantiated statements. One such is that the Jewish community perceives “a breach of trust between the nation and its Jewish population”. If she had said “between Jews and the Labour Party”, nobody would have batted an eyelid, but “the nation”? Another such statement is that fear of rising antisemitism has led young Jews to “return to their synagogues and Jewish organisations in droves”. Asked if this is based on evidence, stats or facts, she says it is “based on feel and on what people say”. And she is adamant that antisemitism is “rising”, evidencing monthly figures from the CST from 2006-18, but does not acknowledge – as the CST itself does – that figures have risen at least in part because of improved reporting and social media. After all, in 2006, there was little information-sharing with the police, and no one had heard of Facebook. Might we just be seeing more clearly what’s always been there? “No. It is rising, but not to panic levels. It is rising in part because of the echo chamber
of social media. People now say things openly that they would not have said 10 years ago.” She cannot decide whether Brexit was a cause or effect of this new willingness to express one’s intolerance openly, but says it was “significant”. “It’s as if the social change race relations legislation led to was somehow being rolled back.” The author peppers the book with context and wisdom. As an example of the latter, she says there are times when antisemitism should be met with outrage, such as the Tower Hamlets mural, and times when it should be met with acid humour and acerbic irony, such as Jeremy Corbyn’s now-famous 2013 thoughts on the ability of British Zionists to see the funny side, despite them having lived here a wee while. “It was an outrageous remark, but the best way to deal with it was to use the irony he says we don’t have to take him apart,” she says. “That was a better defence than yet more outrage. There is no clear line [as regards when to use humour and when to lodge an official complaint], but we need to be quite savvy about tactics.” Talking of which, what did she make of the joint demand from the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council in March 2018 that Corbyn and Labour ban the term ‘Zionist’ because it was being used as a term of abuse? “That’s ridiculous,” she says, unflinchingly. By the final page, Neuberger’s anger and concern are visceral, but while she is “more angry about antisemitism on the left, because that’s not where you’d expect it”, she is “more worried about antisemitism from right-wing nationalism”, adding it “links up with an antielitist wave sweeping Europe and the US, though not all Jews are part of the elite by any means”. However, she also recognises “an increasing super-sensitivity to mild remarks” and “an increasing likelihood of seeing antisemitism where it doesn’t exist”. Won’t some say this book is more of the same? “There will be those who say that, but it’s not crying wolf to point to a real problem.” Did she sense-check herself? “Absolutely, I didn’t want to cry wolf. Some do overreact. It’s tasteless to be sent an antisemitic joke, but in the end it’s just tasteless, I’d pull them up on it. But because we’ve grown sensitised, you pick it up more.” Twenty years from now, will her book be seen as a prescient warning or unnecessary doommongering? She smiles. “I hope it will have been binned because it wasn’t needed.” Antisemitism: What It Is. What It Isn’t. Why It Matters by Julia Neuberger is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, priced £8.99. What’s in a number?
7
BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN
BY RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF Some of the most incredible people I’ve met were once classified by a number rather than a name. One remarkable man, Leslie (Luzer) Kleinman turned his number, 8230, the same numerical value as ahava, the Hebrew word for love, into a lesson for life. Auschwitz inmates were tattooed with a number. The implied message was obvious: you are no longer a human being with a name. You have no family and no identity outside of this hell on Earth. Roll call could last for hours in the freezing cold until every last prisoner was accounted for. This week we start the Book of Numbers. While describing the structure of 12 tribes arrayed in national formation around the central Tent of Meeting containing the Torah, each and every Jew is carefully counted. The Hebrew term for this book is not mispar (number), but pekudim (counting). A mispar is a mere number, whereas a tafkid (role, duty, task), a word with the same root as pekudim, implies a unique role in building something far greater. As individuals we fulfil our potential when we connect to the community and discover and fulfil our unique roles, rather than remaining islands unto ourselves. Leslie, who turned 90 last week, has accompanied Jews from all walks of life to Poland with JRoots. He changed his mispar into a tafkid; he has turned hatred into love and communicated to countless people that they matter and can add such value when they make their own unique contribution. Rabbi Naftali Schiff is founder and chief executive of Jewish Futures
This week, number...
‘Who knows seven?’ ‘I know seven, seven are the days of the week!’ Given the answers to the earlier numbers – God, the two tablets, the three fathers, the four mothers, the books of the Chumash and the orders of the Mishnah – this one focusing on ‘the week’ seems rather generic. Surely the author of this well-known children’s song could have found something more religious for us to sing about? The answer, however, is that in Jewish thought, a week is far more than a convenient way to group days. In fact, there is no logical reason to have weeks at all. Unlike days, months or years, weeks don’t mark any kind of astronomical reality. Yet the idea of a seven day week has near universal acceptance. The number seven is always associated with the natural world. Indeed, rabbinic
❝
SHABBAT ISN’T JUST ANOTHER DAY, IT’S A WHOLE NEW WAY OF BEING
literature refers to seven deserts, seven lands, seven rivers, seven seas and so forth. There are seven universal commandments incumbent on all mankind. Seven creates a unit, a sense of completion and satiation, which is why sheva, the Hebrew word for seven, also spells out savea, satiated. Of course, our weeks end with Shabbat and we are commanded to remember Shabbat all week long. This is why the days of the week don’t have individual Hebrew names, but are known by their numbers. For example, Sunday is Yom Rishon, the first day, and so forth. The seventh day, by way of contrast is not called Yom Shevii but Shabbat. Shabbat isn’t just another day, it’s a whole new way of being. Shabbat gives us a new perspective on life, one from the vantage point of completion. Hence Shabbat is a ‘taste of the world to come’. It is a day for being rather than doing. It is the goal, the focus of the six days that have come before it, and is the day when we are truly alive, spending time with that which matters most. Progressively Speaking
Bible Says What? ‘Ruth did not convert to Judaism’
Should Progressive Jews wear a kippah in public?
BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER As Shavuot approaches, we will once again read the Book of Ruth and the story of a Moabite woman who would end up being the greatgrandmother of King David. This story has long held a special place for Jews-by-choice. While those who convert today will be familiar with having to go through a rigorous, but hopefully welcoming and friendly process on their path to becoming Jewish, Ruth’s conversion is conspicuous by its total absence in the story. Naomi’s sons are described as marrying Moabite women, but at no point do we hear about any conversion taking place. Later on, though, Ruth is clearly regarded as Jewish when she returns to the Land of Israel with Naomi, because laws around her marriage are carried out as usual. So what happened? When Naomi tells Ruth that she should go back to her own family rather than staying with the widow, she declares she will not leave – that
where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay; your people will be my people; and your God my God. This heartfelt declaration of dedication is not just to Naomi personally, but to Naomi’s people and faith too. While no official ceremony or certification was carried out, and Ruth is even still referred to as being from Moab in the rest of the story, her total commitment was the key requirement for her acceptance among the people. While today there are more formal processes which help bring Jews-bychoice further into our community, the story of Ruth teaches us that most important of all is the commitment that a person who chooses to join the community is showing in their choice. Today’s converts to Judaism are among the most dedicated within our communities, and so it is fitting that Ruth was accepted because of the sheer strength of her commitment.
Rabbi Janner-Klausner is the Senior Rabbi of Reform Judaism
BY RABBI DANNY RICH The news that Felix Klein, Germany’s commissioner on antisemitism, “could not recommend Jews wear a kippah everywhere and at any time in Germany”, coupled with a 20 percent reported rise in anti-Jewish crime in the country, is alarming, sad and dangerous. No Jew needs to be reminded of the German-led destruction of European Jewry, less than 80 years ago, or the efforts to make amends since. Klein’s warning should therefore alarm not only Jews, but all advocates of liberal democracy. The kippah has become a potent, if formerly unimportant, symbol of Judaism. Although the custom of covering of one’s head is ancient, there is no biblical commandment to do so at any time, and the seeming universal (for men at least) obsession with it is relatively recent. While some Second Temple officiants wore ritual head covering and scholars of the Talmudic era did so
too, head covering remained divergent in practice and a matter of local custom until the modern period. Despite the Babylonian Talmud (Nedarim 30b) statement that “men sometimes cover their heads and sometimes not; but women’s hair is always covered; and children are always bareheaded”, the kippah gained popularity, perhaps as a reaction to the Christian practice of removing one’s hat. A kippah was eliminated in early Progressive Judaism. But, today, an expectation of the head being covered, at least during prayer, is evident in almost all Progressive communities, even the most radical.
I feel the remarks of Felix Klein are arguably ill-judged, even if as a public official he has a responsibility to provide appropriate and sensible advice to those who might find themselves vulnerable to attack. The specifics of the kippah are unimportant and irrelevant, but liberal democracies are founded on freedoms, including of conscience and religion subject to their not infringing upon the rights of others. A Jew in Germany, or elsewhere, should feel free to wear a kippah in public if they are doing so proudly, but modestly, to declare Jewish identity. The modern state has a responsibility to protect that right and any call to restrict it yields to the enemies of democracy and ultimately makes every citizen less free. I am now tempted to wear my kippah 24 hours a day – in solidarity, with the right so to do. Danny Rich is the Senior Rabbi of Liberal Judaism

HOWARD GOLD BUILDING CONTRACTOR
HPS
Dear Howard Our living room ceiling measuring 8m x 4m has been water damaged owing to a leak from the bathroom above. Our insurance company is agreeable to having the ceiling replaced, and I would like the new ceiling to be soundproofed with a smooth finish and to have spotlights fitted as well. What are the best materials to use, and are there new regulations for new ceilings and is loft insulation used? I’d be grateful for any advice you can give. Justin
WAYNE GROSSMAN DIPPFS WEALTH MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST
KINETIC WEALTH MANAGEMENT Dear Wayne As inflation seems to be rearing its head again, I’m concerned about the impact this could have on my life cover. What do you suggest? Here’s a scenario we may not have considered a few years
ago. But given the economic outlook, it’s one which is now entirely feasible. Let’s say you take out £100,000 of whole of life cover today to protect your family in the event of your death. Understandably, you want that protection to have the same buying power in the future, regardless of when it is needed. But in reality, it could be worth an awful lot less. The culprit, of course, is inflation, the solution is indexation Particularly in the case of whole of life cover, indexation makes very good sense because it becomes progressively harder to obtain additional protection later in life. Indexation avoids this need for top-up cover, as well as the need to undergo additional medical underwriting – a significant benefit in itself.
Dear Justin If you’re concerned about noise, you can use sound block boards rather than standard 12.5mm plasterboard. Sound block boards are sheets of plaster board usually used in rooms with noise, such as utility rooms, to cut down the noise from things like washing machines. They are purple in colour, as opposed to the standard sheets of plasterboard, which are ivory and are fixed and skimmed flat in the same way. They are slightly more expensive, though. Alternatively, you could overboard your existing ceiling with plasterboard, which would save pulling down the old ceiling and making a mess. Your electrician would need to cable through, and I would suggest that you use LED fire rated spotlights and bulbs. Don’t use halogen lights as these get very hot, whereas LEDs do not. It’s always a good idea to insulate, as it helps with the soundproofing. Loft insulation is good to use. Ensure the joints on the plasterboard are taped and that you have two good coats of plaster. After that, paint them.
Clearly, indexation won’t be suitable for everyone. Affordability is one factor, because indexed plans are understandably more expensive than non-indexed options. Equally, it shouldn’t be a term that you gloss over in the fine print when looking at insurance. Kinetic Wealth Management Ltd is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the group’s website www.sjp.co.uk/products. TREVOR GEE PRIVATE HEALTHCARE SPECIALIST
PATIENT HEALTH Dear Trevor We’ve been on a group company scheme for many years and it has worked extremely well. However, in the past couple of years, one member has unfortunately had several medical issues resulting in some heavy claims, all which have been paid. Our new premiums are now almost unaffordable,

and I feel my family have been unfairly penalised. I would like to stay on a company scheme as I know the premiums are much cheaper. Is there anything we can do? Barbara Dear Barbara I see from your letter there are three separate families on your group, and since a company scheme only requires two employees, this may be a consideration. Ending the group scheme is simple enough, although there are implications. Firstly, discounts are applied by the insurer, which may not be otherwise available on single or family policies. Secondly, each member effectively begins a new
T: +44(0)20 8832 2222 E: info@shipsms.co.uk W: www.shipsms.co.uk
policy, and so your insurer will consider whether any exclusions should now be applied. They could even increase the premiums dramatically to maintain a similar level of cover. Perhaps you could approach the member concerned requesting a higher contribution, or simply agree to close the scheme. If you satisfy the insurer’s criteria, start a new company policy although it may even be financially beneficial for the other members to have new policies. There are health insurers, including my own, who do not penalise you, regardless of how many claims you have. Savings can definitely be made, but it’s the cover offered that you should consider first and foremost.
