News / Labour antisemitism

Labour’s complaints reform ‘a significant step backwards’ Jewish community leaders have warned Labour’s proposed reforms for the way the party handles complaints of antisemitism represents “a significant step backwards”. It comes after the shadow cabinet and Labour’s ruling body this week signed up to Jeremy Corbyn’s plan to fast-track the expulsion of antisemitic members. Jewish groups said it still did not go far enough, however, and in a joint statement, the president of the Board of Deputies and the chair of the Jewish Leadership Council said the changes “increase the potential for political interference”. The embattled Labour leader, under pressure to show progress after a searing BBC Panorama documentary earlier this month, put forward two proposals on Monday to reform an internal system that has led to a backlog of cases. Labour’s front bench opted to allow the party’s general-secretary, together with senior officers of the National Executive Committee (NEC), to expel antisemites. At present, only Labour’s National Constitutional Committee (NCC) has the power to do so, but there is currently a backlog of cases awaiting an NCC hearing. On Tuesday the NEC approved the shadow cabinet’s recommendation and the “legally

binding” reform will now be put to a vote at the Party’s annual conference in September. However, the Board’s Marie van der Zyl and the JLC’s Jonathan Goldstein warned it puts decisions on antisemitism “further into the hands of a small group of individuals who consistently vote on factional lines and have already shown their lack of independent thinking”. They added that Labour “seems intent on preserving a system that primarily protects antisemites at the expense of victims”. Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) chair Mike Katz agreed that it was too little, too late. “We can’t have any confidence in these new proposals,” he said. “This is just rearranging the deckchairs. We know we can’t rely on the NEC to make decisions in the interest of Jewish members. It’s failed for years to guard against factional and political interference.” Katz said “nothing short of a fully independent process” would reassure the community, adding that the NEC was not independent because it was “elected on factional slates on the basis of political patronage” with “an in-built majority for the left, which does what the leadership of the party tells it to”. In a statement, the shadow cabinet said it “supported the proposal for summary exclusion

outlined by the Labour leader,” adding that it “also supports the proposal to introduce independent oversight of our processes, and will continue to seek to engage with Jewish community organisations to build confidence”. The idea of handing over the antisemitism complaints-handling process to an outside body such as the Bar Council had been suggested by deputy leader Tom Watson, but it was withdrawn amid an obvious lack of support. A Labour spokesperson said “no other political party would be expected to outsource its complaints procedure”. The JLM wrote to every member of the shadow cabinet this week, urging them to show “real resolve” because the party was “sorely in need of real leadership on antisemitism… This is your chance to lead”. Ruth Smeeth, a Jewish Labour MP who has been critical of Corbyn’s handling of the antisemitism crisis, was left unimpressed by the announcement, saying: “There is still no independence. In fact, arguably, political power over antisemitism cases will be consolidated by political supporters of Jeremy Corbyn.” She added: “The only way that people like me, and actually people who are accused of antiSemitism, will have any faith in the process is if it is not seen to be driven by party political or different factions of the Labour Party.” It comes amid the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s ongoing statutory investigation into alleged institutional antisemitism in the Labour Party, to determine

whether Jews have been “unlawfully discriminated against, harassed or victimised because they are Jewish”. Labour said that under general-secretary Jennie Formby the rate at which cases have been heard has risen fourfold, but the JLM said: “We have no confidence in this figure, given the complete opacity of all data around the disciplinary process. It is meaningless, and we have no confidence in it, or that party’s other statistics.” It capped a bad week for Labour, as new figures showed its membership had sunk from 564,000 in 2017 to 485,000 this year. With the Government’s pending new rules limiting political funding from trade unions, the dip in popularity presents the party with a potential funding problem. Corbyn’s lack of leadership over the antisemitism crisis has also been attacked by Labour’s own peers, including Hilary Armstrong, a former chief whip under Tony Blair, whose Constituency Labour Party subsequently voted to expel her. Last week, Labour’s shadow Brexit minister, Baroness Dianne Hayter, was sacked after she likened the “bunker mentality” around Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership to the “last days of Hitler”. Her next appearance in the House of Lords garnered a round of applause from both benches.

MANN MADE ANTISEMITISM ADVISER In one of her final acts as prime minister this week, Theresa May appointed a Labour MP who chairs the parliamentary group on antisemitism as an independent government adviser on the issue. John Mann will take up the role after commissioning two inquiries into Jew-hatred in the past 15 years, which helped shape how the problem is addressed in Britain. Mann, who heads the All Party Parliamentary Group on Antisemitism, said: “I welcome this opportunity to be a point of contact for the Jewish community. “The first major piece of work will be to look at how Jewish teenagers see their future in Britain. I look forward to discussions with

the Jewish community in agreeing a work plan and a set of priorities”. May said: “Anti-Semitism is racism. It has absolutely no place in our society and we must fight its bitter scourge wherever it rears its head. “John Mann is, without exception, a key voice on this matter. “He has frequently campaigned in the House of Com-

mons on this issue and has tirelessly used his role as a politician to speak out on behalf of victims of anti-Jewish racism. “I am confident he will bring the level of cross-party independent advice needed to advise Government and to ensure we see progress on this very important issue.” The Jewish Leadership Council tweeted: “We applaud the Government on the appointment of John Mann as an independent adviser on antisemitism. This is a significant step in the Government’s effort to take decisive action against antisemitism.” Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl praised Mann as a “towering figure in the fight against antisemitism”.

SITE EDUCATES MEMBERS ON EVILS OF ANTI-JEWISH HATE Jeremy Corbyn said he has “learned so much” about fighting antisemitism, as his party launched educational material to help its members identify the problem. On Sunday, Labour published content on its website, providing members with “basic tools” to call out Jew-hate, including about stereotypes and conspiracy theories. The materials include guidance on how to avoid antisemitism when criticising the Israeli state, and explanations of terms such as Zionism. A spokesperson for the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) said the new section “is too little, far too late”. “After countless examples over the past four years of Labour failing to tackle anti-Jewish racism, a minisite simply isn’t going to be enough to heal the deep divides between the party and the Jewish community. “Labour has effectively cut JLM, it’s sole Jewish

affiliate, out of training. If the party was truly committed to political education as an antidote to antisemitism, they would give the authority and agency back to us, rather than censoring our content. Putting out a superficial leaflet, rather than reforming its disciplinary structures, won’t be enough to detoxify many parts of the party... let alone rebuild relationships with Jewish members.” The Labour leader tweeted: “I’m launching the first in a series of education materials for our members to help them confront racism.

Antisemitism has reared its ugly head in our movement and we must drive it out. I have learned so much, I hope you will too.” On the party’s website, the new section entitled No Place For Antisemitism, says Jew-hatred “is a poison that must be challenged wherever it raises its head”. The site also says “there has been a rise in conspiracy theories which see capitalism and imperialism as the product of plots by a small shadowy elite rather than a political, economic, legal and social system”.

Three Labour MPs have written to Jeremy Corbyn to attack his “woeful” response to the antisemitism row, suggesting four steps to combat four years of Jew-hate in the party. Dames Margaret Hodge and Louise Ellman, and Ruth Smeeth urged Corbyn to “finally act” against antisemitism and put aside “empty platitudes and unproductive meetings” in a joint letter. Criticising Corbyn’s “woeful” record on tackling the antisemitism crisis, the letter condemns the party’s response to claims of interference in disciplinary cases

reported in a recent episode of BBC1’s Panorama, entitled, Is Labour Anti-Semitic? “Labour’s entire approach seems more interested in protecting you from further embarrassment rather than allowing whistleblowers to speak out against antisemitism,” it tells Corbyn, and demands a “frank and full apology to the whistleblowers for the reprehensible way the party has treated them”. A Labour spokesperson said: “The party is implacably opposed to antisemitism and determined to root it out of our movement and our society.”

NEWS IN BRIEF

AUSTIN APPOINTED ISRAELI TRADE ENVOY Former Labour MP Ian Austin has been appointed as a trade envoy to Israel. Austin quit Jeremy Corbyn’s party in February in response to what he claimed was a “culture of extremism, antisemitism and intolerance”. The Dudley North MP, who now sits as an independent in the Commons, said: “Trade with Israel is worth billions to Britain, it has resulted in investment and jobs in businesses across the UK.” Meanwhile, Tory peer Lord Risby has been appointed trade envoy to Lebanon, in addition to his role covering Algeria.

SHADOW JUSTICE SEC DEFENDS CANDIDATE Shadow justice secretary Richard Burgon has defended Ali Milani, the Labour candidate set to challenge Boris Johnson in his Uxbridge constituency, for “disgraceful” tweets he wrote as a teenager. One called ex-newspaper editor Piers Morgan “a zionist” and another, written in response to another user, read: “Nah u won’t mate. It’ll cost you a pound #jew.” Burgon said: “I’m sure there are plenty of [bad] things Mr Johnson did as a teenager.”

NAZI ‘FANATIC’ GETS 3-YEAR SENTENCE A self-confessed “fanatical” neoNazi who claimed Hitler “was right” about the Jews has been jailed for being a member of a banned far-right group. Daniel Ward, a father of two, admitted being a member of the proscribed group National Action, which was banned in 2016. He was jailed for three years at Birmingham Crown Court after admitting membership at a previous hearing in January. At sentencing, Ward was also ordered to spend a further 10 years on licence, once released.

Westminster memorial would be ‘terror target’ The planned Holocaust memorial next to the Houses of Parliament would be a “sitting target for terrorists”, peers were warned this week. Lord Carlile of Berriew expressed concerns over the potential location of a new Holocaust memorial in Victoria Tower Gardens. Peers also heard the park may not have the space to safely accommodate the memorial and people who may want to visit it, and that it could pose a “security risk” by becoming a target for “jihadi-inspired terrorists” Peers were discussing the Parliamentary Buildings (Restoration and Renewal) Bill and whether planned buildings near Parliament, like the

oness Deech said tourists, protesters, and the public all gather in the area. She said: “Above all, we are painfully aware of the vulnerability and magnetic

attraction of this area to terrorists.” Baroness Deech added: “The principle threat comes from jihadi-inspired terrorists, as evidenced by the atrocities that have occurred in Europe targeted against Jews and Jewish associated buildings recently. “The proximity of the planned memorial to parliament, with national and international news media constantly in attendance will make it a high value target for those who wish to promote their evil aims with publicity.” Lord Carlile said: “It would be a sitting target for terrorists and would not be difficult to access. It would not be able to create a ring of steel around it, which can be done on a big site.”

NEXT SHABBATUK SET FOR FEB 2021

New Lib Dem leader a ‘considered and passionate’ ally

The next ShabbatUK takes place on 5 and 6 February 2021, the Chief Rabbi’s office announced this week. The date was set after a consultation found the initiative, encouraging the entire community to mark the weekly day of rest, is still a “powerful and compelling proposition” and has an impact on local communities. The Chief Rabbi’s team also noted the community “should do everything to preserve the sense of occasion”, which “sets it apart as such a special day”.

New party leader Jo Swinson

Jewish leaders have welcomed the election of Jo Swinson as the new leader of the Liberal Democrats, after she beat Sir Ed Davey in the battle to

take over from Sir Vince Cable. Swinson was a business minister in David Cameron’s coalition government and Board of Deputies’ president Marie van der Zyl said she wished Swinson every success in her new role. “We have enjoyed good relations with past [Lib Dem] leaders who have worked with us to ensure the interests of our community are protected, such as by adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism and

ensuring those who propagate antisemitic tropes are dealt with firmly,” she said. “We are sure this will continue under the new leadership.” In recent years the Lib Dems have dumped Baroness Jenny Tonge and, most recently, former MP David Ward for repeated offensive comments. Ward, who was MP for Bradford East, likened Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to Nazi actions against Jews in an entry made in a Holocaust remembrance book. Swinson won almost 50,000 votes

compared to Davey’s 28,000. In her victory speech she launched a withering assessment of new prime minister Boris Johnson, saying he was “unfit” to lead. Gavin Stollar, honourary chair of Lib Dem Friends of Israel, said: “I’ve known Jo for nearly 20 years. She’s a considered and passionate political figure. Her ascent to the leadership is good news for the Jewish community, good news for Israel and good news for our country. She’s someone I’m lucky to consider a friend.”

Prime Minister Johnson / News

Thumbs up from community Jewish communal leaders gave Boris Johnson a resounding thumbs up last night as the new prime minister settled into life in Downing Street, writes Adam Decker. The vote of confidence followed his expected victory in the Conservative Party’s leadership election to replace Theresa May, fought against foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt. Former Conservative cabinet minister and the UK’s Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust Issues Lord (Eric) Pickles was among the first to congratulate Johnson, saying: “The vote was decisive, he has a clear mandate. MPs should respect the result and get behind him. To do otherwise would be deeply dishonourable.” Conservative Friends of Israel chair Stephen Crabb MP said he was “looking forward to working with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his new Government to take the deep UK-Israel relationship from strength to strength”. He added: “From his refusal to boycott Israeli goods in his time as Mayor of London, through to his instrumental role as foreign secretary in both the landmark Balfour Declaration celebrations and the

first-ever official Royal visit to Israel, Boris has a long history of standing shoulder to shoulder with Israel and the Jewish community. Crabb applauded Johnson’s “deep support for Israel” and for his pledge “to be a champion for Jews in Britain and around the world”. Zionist Federation chair Paul Charney said: “We extend congratulations and a hearty mazeltov to Boris. We welcome his appointment and look forward to PM Johnson strengthening the already inseparable ties between Britain and its closest Middle East ally, Israel.” The Jewish Leadership Council said: “We look forward to working with the new prime minister to continue a strong and enduring relationship.” Board of Deputies’ president Marie van der Zyl said: “We wish Boris Johnson every success as prime minister at this critical time for our

News / Kosher concerns / Bedein debate

Agencies meet after kosher food scandal London’s kashrut agencies held a “unique” meeting this week in the wake of a food scandal that has rocked Liverpool’s Jewish community. Meeting at the United Synagogue this week were leading figures from the capital’s kashrut agencies, including the Federation, Kedassia, Kosher London Beth Din, London Board for Shechita and the Sephardi Kashrut Authority. It follows a communal

tragedy last month when two kosher delis in Manchester and Liverpool under the same ownership had their kashrut licences suspended after authorities raised concerns about the sale of non-kosher meat and poultry. In the space of two days, “serious breaches of kashrut” were reported at Roseman’s Delicatessen in Childwall, Liverpool, and Gough’s Deli in Prestwich, Manchester. They

were part or wholly owned by Robert Kaye, who took his own life a day later. Liverpool’s kashrut authorities told Jewish residents that the sale of non-kosher products had been “ongoing for a considerable amount of time”, adding: “Many people will need to return their kitchens and their utensils to kosher status.” Experts from Manchester have since been called in to help re-kosher kitchens at the city’s

Jewish care homes, schools and synagogues. This week’s meeting of London agencies was “to establish a joint policy of minimum requirements for all meaty restaurants and manufacturing

premises”. Participants said: “The meeting took place in a spirit of harmony and achdut (communal unity) with the aim of learning from one another and improving kashrut standards.”

ZF defends hosting controversial Israeli activist The Zionist Federation (ZF) has defended its decision to host an Israeli activist in London this week, despite claims he shared a platform with disciples of Meir Kahane. David Bedein was due to speak at an event in Finchley today, discussing the UK government’s funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). He argues the UN agency “demonises both Israel and Jews”.

Professor Rex Brynen of McGill University in Canada has said Bedein has “enormous credibility problems” and accused him of having links to the Kahanist movement – something Bedein stridently denies. Kahane was an American rabbi who co-founded the right-wing Jewish Defence League and was convicted of conspiracy to manufacture explosives. He was assassinated in 1990. In 2012, Ha’aretz reported that

Bedein was a speaker at a conference discussing “Holocaust lessons” led by Kahane disciple Michael Ben-Ari. Bedein said: “There is not a word of truth to these silly allegations. I debated Kahane and was a consistent fervent opponent of Kahane. The Kahanists have never forgiven me for that.” Bedein’s invitation to speak to a London audience by the ZF, in an event open to non-members, has raised communal concerns, including from

Alexandra Wright, senior rabbi at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue and another communal source – who preferred to remain anonymous – who claimed the ZF “is giving a platform to a wellknown anti-Palestinian activist with links to far-right groups in Israel”. ZF chair Paul Charney staunchly backed Bedein, adding: “We have no knowledge of any direct association with extremists. Until this is proven we will continue our association.”

Sir Mick Davis has resigned as chief executive of the Conservative Party, warning the Tories risk handing Jeremy Corbyn the keys to 10 Downing Street. Sir Mick, who once chaired the Jewish Leadership Council and David Cameron’s Holocaust Commission, quit hours before Boris Johnson became prime minister. He cited “a lack of unity in our party” as well as a lack of funding, saying: “Good politics is not a cheap exercise. If we are not properly resourced, we risk a Jeremy Corbyn in Number 10... Our new leader can only be effective if a strong and unified party stands behind him.”

JN backs platform for unheard voices For a storytelling people, there are plenty of Jews who have never had the chance to tell their own stories to an audience bigger than guests at the Friday night dinner table, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Reasons for this are myriad – it may be someone has a disability people do not understand, or that they play a communal role people don’t get, or that they had a life experience they have not been ready to tell. These are the Jews now being recruited for a special storytelling event at JW3 on 28 October, titled ‘People Who Usually Don’t Lecture’ (PWUDL), media sponsored by Jewish News. “We are looking for great stories from inspiring and unusual non-professional storytellers from the British Jewish community to feature on stage at JW3,” said organisers Juliet Simmons and Stephen Shashoua. tion, ZE.ZE, and gathers people who live in the same city to get to know each other “behind the labels”. With initial seed funding from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, the project aims to train those in the British Jewish community who do not usually have the opportunity to tell their complex and inspiring stories to an audience. The format, which has been rolled out in Israel and the United States, is for between six and eight speakers to appear on stage for about eight minutes each. Each story is recorded by

video and audio, before being turned into podcasts and educational resources. “Our community has had a challenging time of late,” said Simmons and Shashoua. “While we have always had religious and ethnic difference, political differences have come further to the fore and exposed the divisions among British Jews. “The PWUDL format is a perfect one to introduce to the UK, as we hope it will help foster a new way of listening and speaking with each other.”  Register to tell your story at jw3.org.uk/PWUDL

Lord Sacks urges strictlyOrthodox Jews to open up Former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks has told a London audience the strictly-Orthodox community “does not have to be afraid of the outside world”, writes Jenni Frazer. Sacks was in conversation with entrepreneur Tal Keinan, whose new book, God Is In The Crowd: Twenty-First-Century Judaism, has received endorsement around the world. The encounter, moderated by Baroness Ros Altmann, took place at JW3, which is now in partnership with the Genesis Philanthropy Group (GPG) for a series of Global Jewish Conversations, of which this was the first. It follows a successful pilot event last year between Genesis co-founder Mikhail Fridman and former Soviet refusenik Natan Sharansky. The aim of the series, said JW3 chief executive Raymond Simonson, was to bring the best of the diaspora to British Jews. In his book, Keinan, 50, asks: “Should there be Jews?” He said he came from a typical American Jewish family – all three of his older

brothers had married non-Jewish women. “Relatively early in life it occurred to me that Judaism is optional and that hasn’t been the case for the large swathe of Jews in 2,000 years. And we are not opting in – we are opting out.” The trend showed that in two generations there might not be Jews identified as such in America. Keinan emigrated to Israel, becoming a fighter pilot, then a businessman. But in questioning what he was doing, he said, he came up with more questions: “If I am only Jewish because of antisemitism, is that enough?” Part of the problem, he said, was that there was no central definition of who is a Jew and that it had come to matter more and more. “Israel’s approach of bludgeoning Judaism into its citizens is not working,” he added. Sacks acknowledged “Jewish identity is fuzzy round the edges”, but said Jewish life was “enriched by converts”. In the 20th century, he said, there had been two miracles: the birth of the state of Israel, largely driven by secular Jews, and the rebirth of the Jewish people, spearheaded by the Eda Haredit strictlyOrthodox groupings. Now, he said, it was time for the strictly-Orthodox to acknowledge they had “won” in the battle of Judaism by their astonishing numbers, and that it was time to reach out to the outside world. GPG chief executive Ilia Salita said: “The Global Jewish Conversations series aims to inspire and challenge. The inaugural event did that. We are proud to partner with JW3 on this series, which will continue to provide an inspiring space for the community to engage with the best of contemporary Jewish thought.”

Sex harassment guide launch Jewish Women’s Aid has launched the UK’s first faith-based scheme to combat sexual harassment in the workplace, writes Adam Decker. The charity said its “culturechanging” programme includes compulsory training and monitoring to ensure the “safety and respect” of all employees and volunteers working in Jewish community organisations. The scheme, which is supported by the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC), is being trialled at five organisations, before being rolled out across the community. JWA said it consulted widely in developing its programme, speaking to small, medium and large Jewish organisations, but that only one had

adequate policies and practices inplace to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. “It is absolutely crucial that everyone working for a Jewish community organisation feels safe from any kind of sexual harassment,” said the Board’s chief executive Gillian Merron. “To ensure that happens we need to have the correct procedures in-place which will not only protect those involved in communal organisations but also give them the confidence that harassers will be identified and dealt with. By taking this proactive step we are setting an example which we hope others will follow.” JLC chief executive Simon Johnson added: “It is vitally important that we all work in an envi-

Lord Greville Janner’s family have said they are “winning back our father’s reputation” after one of his child sex abuse accusers was found guilty of perverting the course of justice and of fraud. It follows the ten-week trial of Carl Beech, 51, a former paediatric nurse, who alleged that the late Lord Janner was part of a VIP paedophile ring that sexually abused, tortured and murdered young boys in the 1970s and 80s. Beech, himself a paedophile, said Janner raped him at the members-only Carlton Club in London when he was a child, despite the club being for Conservatives and Janner being a Labour MP. “The last six years for the whole family have been a nightmare,” said Janner’s son Daniel, a QC who recently co-founded the pressure group FAIR [Falsely Accused Individuals for Reform] together with Sir Cliff Richard. “It’s hard to underestimate just how appalling these allegations of the most serious kind have been in terms

I mean, we’re talking about rape and torture!” Beech’s accusations against Janner and other senior figures including MPs, peers, spy bosses and retired military generals, set in motion a £2.5 million police investigation, a series of house raids and a welter of civil claims.

Jewish representatives in the UK have thanked the BBC for its engagement during the making of a BBC documentary on male circumcision, broadcast last week. Milah UK, which defends the right of the Jewish community to carry out religious circumcisions, applauded the BBC’s inclusion of Jewish views but criticised the title of the programme, called A Cut Too Far, which it said was “unhelpful”. A spokesman said: “Milah UK appreciates the producers engaged with us before this documentary was produced and broadcast. “We plainly disagree with many of those featured on the programme. However, we further appreciate the interviews with Jewish families for whom brit milah [male infant circumcision, which is done on their eighth day] is an important rite of passage. The programme reflects this and shows how the community engages in celebrating the event.” He added: “Since medical issues are raised in the programme, it is worth restating that thousands of Jewish men who have undergone

They adhere to the concept that brit milah is a gift from their parents, and can perceive it as their first recognition of their right to their religious inheritance.” Male circumcision is one of the oldest known surgical procedures and is traditionally undertaken as a mark of cultural identity or religious importance, or for perceived health benefits such as improved hygiene or reduced risk of infection. It is almost universally practised

among Jews and Muslims. However pressure is growing on the ancient practice and several countries are now considering banning male infant circumcision for non-medical reasons. Lawyers say any interference on a person’s body without their consent is “assault”. Among those interviewed for the programme was Reform Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain of Maidenhead Synagogue, who last year called for a national authority to be set up to regulate male infant circumcision.

Docs warn women over home test kits for BRCA

Doctors have warned women against using home genetic testing kits as they can give false readings on cancer-causing BRCA mutations commonly found in Jewish populations. One woman, reportedly informed by a test kit that she carried the genetic mutation which increases the risk of breast or ovarian cancer, scheduled preventive breast removal surgery. It was only called off at the last minute after NHS clinicians discovered the kit’s reading was a false positive.

Professor Anneke Lucassen, a geneticist at Southampton University and chair of the British Society for Genetic

Medicine, described the woman’s experience as “terrifying”, adding that the tests were “more often wrong than right”.

The steep fall in the cost of genetic analysis, together with the lack of regulation in the field, has led to a proliferation of companies offering to reveal genetic secrets from £20. But a major commercial DNA chip was recently found to be correct in just 17 percent of cases when detecting the BRCA mutation, and missed more than half of those with actual BRCA mutations, from a dataset of nearly 50,000 people. Jewish Ashkenazi women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than the national average. Recent studies show Sephardi Jews may also be predisposed to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

Afforestation, noun, a-for-ə-’stā-shən

Definition: the act of establishing a new forest When it comes to tackling climate change, nothing beats the humble tree. These woody sponges suck harmful carbon emissions out of the atmosphere and lock them away safely in their trunks. But what’s better than a tree? A whole forest of them! We would know. JNF UK has been planting them for a long time, helping to make Israel the only country to enter the 21st century with a net gain in trees. And while we’ve branched out into other areas – like education, welfare and culture – afforestation is still close to our heart. Our urban forests make towns and cities across the desert bloom. So if you’re looking for an answer that really gets to the root of the problem, take a leaf out of our book and plant some trees in Israel!

World News / Trump attack / Homes demolished / Mosque donors

Squad ‘should apologise’ Donald Trump this week stepped up his attack on four Democratic congresswomen known as ‘the Squad’, once again referring to Israel. In a tweet, he called on the four Congresswomen — Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts – to apologise. “I don’t believe [they] are capable of loving our country,” he wrote. “They should apologise to America (and Israel) for the hor-

rible (hateful) things they have said. They are destroying the Democrat Party... [they] can never destroy our great nation!” Meanwhile, responding to speculation about whether the congresswomen, who back the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, would be allowed to enter Israel, its US envoy, Ron Dermer, said: “Out of respect for the great alliance between Israel and America, we would not deny entry to any member of Congress into Israel.”

VILNIUS SHUL DISCOVERY £561k for NZ mosque

Archaeologists excavating the site of the Great Synagogue of Vilna in Vilnius have discovered two out of four pillars that surrounded the pulpit, or bimah. The pillars, which once stood nine metres tall, were discovered alongside writing carved into the walls next to the bimah, a cellar containing 300 coins, a mikvah or ritual bath, and 16th-century tiles. “The discovery of the pillars is a great moment for us because we have found one of the two most sacred parts

of the building,” said research team head Dr Jon Seligman. “They were located at a special place in the synagogue, where rabbis stood during the service.” Writing found by archaeologists refers to the Old Testament, including a citation from Genesis.

Jewish communities in New Zealand, Australia and the United States have donated £561,000 to families of victims of the attacks on two mosques in Christchurch in which 49 people were killed. The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, a community victimised by a shooting at a suburban synagogue that killed 11 last October, were among the major donors. Stephen Goodman of the New Zealand Jewish Council said. “The Jewish community, both in New Zealand

and overseas, wanted the victims of the mosque attacks to know that we see them, we empathise with them, and we support them.” Ibrar Sheikh from the Federation of Islamic Associations New Zealand said: “The Jewish and Muslim community in New Zealand already have a long history of collaboration, but this wider gift of support from the global community is gratefully received.” The attacks in Christchurch and Pittsburgh were carried out by far-right extremists.

ISRAEL DEMOLISHES PALESTINIAN HOMES Israeli work crews have started demolishing dozens of Palestinian homes in an East Jerusalem neighbourhood. The demolitions cap a years-long legal battle over the buildings, which straddle the city and the occupied West Bank. Israel says the buildings were built illegally too close to its West Bank security barrier, but residents say they have nowhere to build and getting permits to construct homes legally is impossible.

Gilad Erdan, Israel’s minister of public security, said the supreme court ruled the illegal construction “constitutes a severe security threat and can provide cover to suicide bombers and other terrorists hiding among the civilian population”.

East Jerusalem bulldozers

Anger at rabbi’s gay slur Gay rights organisations have demanded one of Jerusalem’s two chief rabbis take back his claim that gay people cannot be religious and homosexuality is uncontrolled lust which can be conquered by belief in God. Shlomo Amar, the Sephardic chief rabbi of the capital, made the comments during a sermon last weekend in Ashdod. “There are people

who call themselves religious who also fell into that trap,” Amar told the audience. “They aren’t religious. It would be better if they cast off their kippah and Shabbat [observance] and show their true faces. “With their bodies they sin against the Jewish people,” he added, using a Talmudic phrase meaning they are irreligious.

ONE OF AUSCHWITZ’S FIRST INMATES DIES The last survivor of the first convoy of prisoners sent by the Nazis to the Auschwitz death camp has died at the age of 96, the camp museum said on Tuesday. Auschwitz Memorial said on its official Twitter site this week: “With great sorrow we received information about the death of Kazimierz Albin, the last living survivor of the first transport of Poles to the German Auschwitz camp.”He was one of to 150,000 non-Jewish Polish prisoners in Auschwitz. EU ‘COMMITTED’ TO IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL The European Union said it remains committed to the nuclear deal with Iran despite that country’s claim that it violated its terms – prompting Israel to accuse Brussels of appeasement. The allegation by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu followed an announcement on Monday by Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign policy chief, that “for the time being, none of the parties to the agreement has signaled their intention to invoke” an article dissolving the deal.

Mumbai attack arrest Pakistani police have arrested the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks which killed six Jews including a rabbi and his pregnant wife. Hafiz Saeed is the founder of terrorist group Lashkar-eTaiba (L-e-T, Army of the Pure) and has long been wanted for planning the four-day assault, which killed at least 174 people and injured more than 300. Ten highly-trained militants carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across the city in November 2008. Among the targets was a Jewish outreach centre based at Nariman House (renamed Chabad House).

Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg bought the fivestorey building in 2006 and set up an educational centre, synagogue, drug prevention service and hostel, mainly catering to Israeli travellers headed for Goa and Rajasthan. The couple were among

eight Israelis taken hostage during the attacks. After several hours of aborted negotiations, Indian commandos stormed the building in the early hours. The couple were among six killed. Rivka had been six months pregnant. Their twoyear-old son was saved by the couple’s Indian nanny, Sandra Samuel, who now lives in Israel. Defence analysts say L-e-T’s operations are so sophisticated that help from Pakistan’s armed forces and intelligence services is almost inevitable. L-e-T is alleged to have attacked India’s parliament in 2001 and killed 40 Indian policemen in a raid earlier this year.

Jewish News meets... Ido Aharoni

‘NATION BRANDER’ INTENT ON MAKING ISRAEL COOL Huge populations around the world can’t connect with Israel because it’s being defined only through the political prism, says Ido Aharoni, who served for 25 years in the country’s foreign ministry. He tells Jenni Frazer what strategies he uses to change perceptions

Ido Aharoni

One of Israel’s most distinguished former diplomats is a man in a hurry to put over his country’s positive message — and he says that there is a different way to “sell” the country internationally. Ido Aharoni, a public diplomacy specialist who served in the Israeli foreign ministry for 25 years, was Israel’s longest-serving consulgeneral in New York, holding that post with the rank of ambassador for six years, overseeing the operations of Israel’s largest diplomatic mission worldwide. He is hugely influential both in the US and internationally: New York mayor Bill de Blasio declared July 29 2016 to be “Ambassador Ido Aharoni Day”, while in 2013 Jewish newspaper the Algemeiner named him as one of the “Top 100 people positively influencing Jewish life”. Now the Global Distinguished Professor for International Relations at New York University, Aharoni has become the go-to pioneer of “nation branding”, and was the founder of the Brand Israel programme. In essence, that means delivering a positive message separate from the conflict. But Mr Aharoni warns: “Nation branding is not a crisis management tool.” In other words, you can’t do one to cover up the problems of the other. It is, he says, “a longterm strategy, it’s not about policy, but about connections”. As he points out, “it’s possible to celebrate Britain without referring to Brexit. No place would like to be known solely for its problems. So let’s engage in a broader conversation about Israel”. The flipside of what Mr Aharoni calls “emotional marketing” is, of course, the dark threats of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions move-

‘UK can step up peace role’ Former Middle East Minister Alistair Burt has said the UK could “step in” to the peace process now the United States has changed its role. Burt, who resigned as minister over Brexit in March, spoke at a one-day Royal United Services Institute conference, organised by think tank BICOM, exploring UK strategy in the Middle East after Brexit. He said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Trump has “changed” the US’ Mid East role

cannot be “kept on the shelf somewhere, unresolved”, adding: “If it is not settled, justly for the Palestinians and with security for Israel, something bad is going to happen.” On UK involvement, Burt said: “The failure to handle this dispute creates more uncertainty. As the US changes its role in the peace process, who steps in? I see a role for us.” Other speakers included Baroness Catherine Ashton, the EU’s former foreign policy chief, and Sir Mark Lyall Grant, a former senior diplomat who was the UK’s top envoy to the United Nations. Burt, who has twice served as Middle East Minister in the past nine years, explained he had been “interested in the Middle East since I was at school as a child during the SixDay War with many Jewish friends in Manchester”. He said: “As I got older, my understanding of the Palestinian issue became much more nuanced. I have realised you have to see every issue from all points of view.”

ment, or BDS. But the former ambassador says: “The notion of Israel as an isolated entity [because of BDS] is baloney. Israel today is more accepted than ever and its economy is better than ever.” He says any suggestion that BDS is working against Israel “is not supported by the facts. It mostly reflects the anxiety of Israel’s well-wishers.” In fact, says Mr Aharoni, he would go further. “There is a huge problem not being addressed by the anti-BDS movement. And that’s the inability of major populations in the world to develop relations with Israel, because Israel is only being defined through the political prism.” He says Israel has become “an uncool country”, but he is taking steps to tackle this problem. He is launching a kind of “Birthright for academics” in an attempt to change the conversation. He wants to bring thousands of academics worldwide to Israel to see the country for themselves, for which he believes there is no substitute. “We have the resources to make it happen, between the Jewish communities worldwide and the indirect support of

the Israeli government.” But he also notes that the growth of social media has allowed ordinary Israelis “to take to their keyboards and promote their country in a very de facto way. That’s a real game changer. We live in a world where people don’t trust governments but they do trust their friends — and even their ‘friends’ on social media”. Supporters of Israel “need to reclaim the narrative of Zionism, to be inclusive, not negative,” Mr Aharoni says. “We have to bring people to Israel in huge numbers, people who come to see Israel for themselves in an unmediated fashion. We have nothing to hide.” Still looking at the long-term strategy, Mr Aharoni says the secret is to “catch them young, and it will pay off later”. Years ago, he says, he interviewed the actress Dame Helen Mirren in New York. “She remembered being on kibbutz in 1968, and that led her to understand the complexity of the situation today”. If Ido Aharoni has his way, he would set up thousands of future Helen Mirrens for 20 and 30 years into the future. Nation branding, in this way, works.

Bombing commemorated Twenty-five years ago, on 18 July, just before 10am, a car bomb destroyed the Buenos Aires AMIA Jewish centre, killing 85 people and injuring more than 300. Last week, commemorations took place throughout Argentina and across the world on the 25th anniversary of the devastating bombing. Despite furious condemnation by Argentina and Israel, no perpetrators have been brought to justice. Both countries have blamed Iran, implicating former Iranian officials and Hezbollah in the attack. Each year, to mark the anniversary, there is a march in front of the rebuilt AMIA building, after a public siren call. This year, at exactly 9.53am, the sirens of every Buenos Aires ambulance, police car and fire engine,

Ceremonies paid tribute to the victims of the bombing of Argentina’s AMIA Jewish centre

also sounded. Commemoration ceremonies were held in 17 Argentinian cities and the country’s president, Mauricio Macri, launched a book containing 25 essays on terrorism from global leaders, including US President

Donald Trump and Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel. The US vice-president took part in a Western Hemisphere antiterrorism summit and visited the rebuilt AMIA building to pay tribute to the victims. More than 20 Argentinian

embassies throughout the world also held commemoration ceremonies at the initiative of the Latin American Jewish Congress — the regional branch of the World Jewish Congress — and Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Applications for Portuguese citizenship soar after 2015 law Portugal has approved about a third of approximately 33,000 applications for citizenship under its 2015 law for descendants of Sephardic Jews, according to official figures. Applications based on the 2015 law, primarily from Israel, Turkey, Brazil and Venezuela, are behind a 10 percent increase in 2018 applications. Portugal’s Publico magazine reported last month that there were 41,324 such requests; Desired: Portuguese passports the highest tally in at least

five years. Israel, which provided Portugal with only a few dozen new citizens per year before 2015, made 4,289 applications in 2018 — the second-highest number after Brazil. Israelis submitted even more applications for naturalisation than ex-Portuguese colonies such as Cape Verde or Angola. The Foreigners and Borders Service told Publico the increase resulted primarily from the 2015 law about

descendants of Sephardi Jews. Portugal passed its law shortly before Spain passed a similar law, which is more restrictive and ends in October. Thousands of descendants of Sephardic Jews have obtained Spanish citizenship. Portugal’s law is open-ended. Both countries said the law was to atone for the Inquisition, the Catholic-led persecution of Jews in the Iberian peninsula in the 15th and 16th centuries.

DONORS SUSPEND MUSEUM FUNDING A Jewish association says some private donors to Poland’s renowned Jewish history museum have suspended funding out of concerns about the government’s failure to renew the term of its director. In May, a special commission approved Dariusz Stola for another five-year term, but Culture Minister Piotr Glinski has not yet officially reappointed him. Glinski said he was still weighing the decision, because Stola had allegedly refused to make the museum available for a conference that was to be dedicated to the late twin of ruling conservative party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski. A spokesman for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews said a request for a conference dedicated to the late Polish President, Lech Kaczynski, had been made four years ago – and was met with openness and a suggestion that political scientists be invited as co-organisers. No conference has yet taken place. The government also criti-

cised the tone of last year’s exhibit mentioning Poland’s March 1968 antisemitic campaign. The Communist authorities’ campaign blamed Poland’s difficulties on its Jews, driving thousands abroad. Opened in 2013, the museum presents the 1,000year history of Polish Jews and of the Holocaust. It is also a conference and debate centre promoting tolerance and fighting prejudice. It is jointly managed and funded by a Jewish association, the city of Warsaw and the Culture Ministry. All three bodies were represented in the commission approving Stola for another term. Piotr Wislicki, head of the co-funding Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, said many donors have suspended contributions out of concern for its future. The museum was seen internationally as an ambassador in the “very delicate” Polish-Jewish dialogue, he said, adding the lack of a “captain” did not help.

Russian woman, 71, Headstones reveal history of Bitolan Jews wins aliyah battle

A 71-year-old woman from a Russian village has succeeded in obtaining Israeli citizenship after a three-year battle. Former community leader Anna Bocharnikova, of Vysoki, belongs to the Subbotnik Jewish community of southern Russia, whose more than 600 remaining members are descendants of Russian peasants who converted to Judaism two centuries ago. A separate group of Russian Christians who chose to

Anna Bocharnikova, right, with Israeli Tova Filchagova

observe Shabbat is also known as Subbotniks, which has led to considerable confusion. Bocharnikova is the first Subbotnik Jew to be allowed to make aliyah since 2016 and just the seventh to have done so in the past five years. Before 2005, hundreds of Subbotnik Jews from Vysoki moved to Israel. All of them were recognised as Jews and integrated into Israeli society. Fourteen years ago, however, Israeli officials halted the Subbotnik aliyah, casting doubt on their Jewishness. Bocharnikova was helped by organisation Shavei Israel. Its founder and chairman, Michael Freund, said: “The treatment meted out to Subbotnik Jews by Israeli bureaucracy is simply inexcusable.”

A major clean-up operation of the Jewish cemetery in Bitola, the Macedonian city once known as Monastir where Jews are said to have lived since the third century CE, has revealed some poignant memories for the few descendants of its Jews. Nazis killed 98 percent of Macedonian Jewry and the remaining community was almost wiped out in the 1963 earthquake which devastated Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia. Rachel Shelley Levi-Drummer, who left for Israel with her grandparents after the earthquake, has joined Israel’s ambassador

The Jewish cemetery in Macedonia

to North Macedonia, Dan Oryan, to work on cleaning up the Bitola Jewish cemetery. They have been working on the cemetery for four years and have so far

unearthed around 40 percent of its estimated 10,000 headstones – some dating back to the 15th century, and placed flat on the ground in the Sephardi tradition. The Bitola headstones contained rich descriptions and even poems about the deceased. Bela Balashnikov, 76, learned the only information she has about her greatgrandfather, Matityahu Shmaya Zarfati, from a stone uncovered in the clean-up. “I was so moved to learn he was a donor to communal causes, that he cared about the poor, that he was a learned man. Before the clean-up, I knew only his name.”

Shul launches scheme to help immigrants A New York synagogue has launched two partnerships designed to help both immigrants who are asylum seekers, and Russian-speaking Jews in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. Congregation Beit Simchat Torah (CBST) has attracted

some of New York’s top lawyers to volunteer at its weekly legal clinics. Help is on offer pro bono to immigrants who need help in completing asylum applications, and to learn what other legal services they might need. It receives a grant from the UJA-Federation of New York. The congregation also

works with RUSA LGBT, a group initially formed to unify and support Russianspeaking Jews in the LGBTQ community. But violent physical attacks on LGBTQ people in the former Soviet Union have increased. As a result many Russian-speaking – but not necessarily Jewish

– immigrants began seeking support from CBST and the scope of the group expanded. One of the congregation’s rabbis, Marisa James, said: “It really feels like each successive generation of immigrants is figuring out how to welcome and support the next one, and that’s wonderful”.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Olive on a high wire

Boris Johnson once said he had as much chance of becoming prime minister as he had of being reincarnated as an olive. Amid the cheers of well-wishers, the tug of lobbyists and glare of cameras, he must now be worrying about the afterlife. When it comes to our community, almost everyone agrees that Prime Minister Johnson will be a positive, as were prime minister May and Cameron. The question concerning most of us – beyond how Britain leaves the EU – is whether BoJo’s no-deal brinksmanship with Parliament will trigger a general election. If it does, the next resident of 10 Downing Street could well be Jeremy Corbyn. Just let that thought sink in... Labour’s new ‘remain’ position on Brexit could have led to a new progressive parliamentary bloc, together with the Lib Dems and the Greens, to challenge the Tories, who are still at war with each another, and whose votes will surely be stolen by Nigel Farage to some extent. So perhaps the most important news of recent days was not Johnson’s victory but the declaration from new Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson that she would not enter a coalition with a party led by Corbyn, who this week played the role of reformer. After four years of misery, angst, headlines, resignations, urgings, pleadings, press releases, video appeals, vacuity, denials, suspensions, expulsions, reports, campaigns, counter-campaigns, demonstrations, insults, wrangling, letters and despair, Corbyn decided this week that “enough was enough” and put forward some suggestions to get on top of Jew hatred in the Labour Party. His main suggestion was to centralise expulsion powers to his inner clan. The reaction of the Jewish community, which had asked for an independent process – Labour’s processes having been shown to be lacking in anything resembling credibility – was brutally honest. So the sorry saga drags on. In the meantime, before he comes back as an olive, PM Boris has a job to do on Brexit. We wish him all the best with his high-wire act. The battle against bigotry Thank you from the bottom of my heart for publishing Joe Hyman’s truly remarkable piece last week, headlined: “I survived abusive religious ‘conversion’ therapy”. What this remarkable man has been forced to endure is a scandal surely worthy of criminal charges against the perpetrators. Each of Mr Hyman’s words about his ordeal and, finally, blessedly, embracing his future identity, cut me to my core. But the sentence that will remain with me was: “I was sold a narrative about my supposed psychologically impoverished childhood, that

WIMBLEDON TENNIS PAY AT FAULT With reference to Rabbi Ariel Abel’s piece last week on what the Torah says about equal pay at Wimbledon, I feel he missed the point. Players in the women’s singles and doubles play only for the best of three sets, while men’s single and doubles play for the best of five sets, which is much longer and

considerably more exhausting. Therefore the men should receive a larger fee than the women. For your information, this year, the winner of men’s and women’s singles took a staggering £2.35 million each, which in my opinion was definitely unfair.

I wasn’t loved enough or man enough.” I am aware that Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has taken a clear and public stand in support of the Jewish community’s LGBT+ members. Clearly the battle against bigotry and intolerance is far from over. Our religious leaders must speak with one voice, time and time again, to make it abundantly clear that the attitude of homophobic groups such as JONAH has no place in modern Judaism or, indeed, the civilised world. “Well, who’d have thought it?!”

The Jewish people displayed incredible courage to leave the land of Egypt in search of a more accepting home. In parallel, the Jewish MPs and Labour Party members should take heed and embark on an exodus from Labour HQ to hit Pharaoh Corbyn Ramses where it hurts most.

If Jewish Labour MPs, peers and members want their complaints of antisemitism to be taken seriously, they must evacuate the party ASAP, otherwise their continuing membership will be seen to be borderline hypocrisy.

Racist phrase echoes through the decades ALEX BRUMMER CITY EDITOR, DAILY MAIL

T

he moment and the phrase is still as evocative for me now as when it was uttered more than five decades ago. My mother pulled up the family’s Vauxhall at our local garage in Hove to fill up with petrol. The female pump attendant filled up as requested, took the cash from my mother’s hand and then proffered the change. As she handed over the money, her voice rose and she shouted: ‘Our Queen, your country.’ It was a strange event, on a nice street in a sedate town in what must have been the mid1960s and I wasn’t quite sure what it meant. But when the incident was discussed later, over a family dinner, my late mother, scion of an Orthodox and distinguished Anglo-Jewish family which could trace its origins back several centuries, described it as a phrase used by antisemites. The implication was that the Royal family belonged to the British but the country and money was controlled by Jews. Over the years, like every Jewish schoolboy

in Britain, and throughout my life, I encountered antisemitism. There was the art master who used to rage at one of my classmates, a highly intelligent chap: “Jewish boys can’t paint.” The joke was on “old Slocombe” who seemed to have no awareness of Chagall, Kandinsky, Pissarro, Seurat, Freud and the legions of Jewish impressionists. The “our Queen, your country” phrase, I have subsequently come to realise, is a corruption of the banner under which the British army went to war in 1914: “For God, King and Country.” As historian Michael Howard observed, the first of these authorities, if

LIKE EVERY JEWISH SCHOOLBOY IN BRITAIN, I GREW UP FACING ANTISEMITISM

invoked at all, is likely to provoke “contention rather than unity”– the second (now the Queen) is accorded little such significance, and the third, “to die for one’s country” has lost its appeal in an inter-dependent world. But language in provocative hands still has the power to send the same kind of shiver down the spine as that youthful encounter on the petrol forecourt. There have been two such incidents of late. The first, Donald Trump’s “go back from where you came from” aimed at the so called “Squad” – four radical Congresswomen who have changed the debate on Capitol Hill and across the globe – still rages and leaves a lasting stench. The second comes from the ultra-civilised and British world of cricket. Triumph has been turned into politics by a discussion around the so-called “Tebbit test”. This is the preposterous idea that if your family came from overseas, even several generations ago, and you cheer for the Indian or Australian team in preference to the England, you are somehow unpatriotic and not bought into the adopted British nationality of your parents, grandparents or even further back.

The Trump intervention plainly is the more dangerous. At one of his recent campaign rallies the crowd erupted into a cry of ‘Send her back”, directed at Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. In the Jewish community Ms Omar is not highly regarded. She had to apologise earlier this year for making comments that were viewed as antisemitic. Even so, in a country of immigrants, Trump’s invocation – aimed at four women of colour – was unacceptable. Indeed, if Trump were to be interpreted literally he would be on a plane to Scotland (if they would have him) as his mother was born and bred there. As for the cricket test, it is plainly rubbish. My daughter-in-law Ruvani comes from a highly-educated Sri Lankan family, went to Oxford, has a PhD from UCL and is British and patriotic as she could be. But she and her family cannot help themselves from cheering for Sri Lanka in much the same way as Jewish English sports enthusiasts take pride in Israeli players and visiting teams. Our ancestry, families and traditions are what we are. But let no one doubt our loyalty to Queen and country.

Enough about survival – let’s focus on revival RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF CHIEF EXECUTIVE, JEWISH FUTURES

O

ne Shabbat morning 13 years ago, I was respectfully ushered into our gutted and charred synagogue by London Metropolitan Police. Our synagogue had become an antisemitic crime scene. They quickly escorted me through the blackened disaster zone in order to allow me to lift up the Torah scrolls that had been stripped naked of their darkened covers, torn apart and lay strewn in abandon on the floor. I will always appreciate both the sensitivity and care of the police at that time. We had been victims of a despicable arson attack at our educational centre in the heart of England’s Jewish community. This was London 2006, not the Berlin my grandparents escaped in the 1930s. The Labour Party, Twitter, national and international media – today nowhere seems untouched by antisemitism. We applaud the brave and tireless members

of our community who stand up proudly and unapologetically with a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism. But, may I suggest that we also need to switch up the narrative, in order not to ironically allow our detractors to define us. We must fight antisemitism wherever it rears its ugly head, but at the same time cannot afford to allow it to form the bedrock of our children’s Jewish identity or experience. Time and again, things happen that remind us we must never cow meekly in the face of antisemitism. However, we cannot and must not allow it to obfuscate our communal priorities. As I crouched down to cradle those two parts of the Sefer Torah in each hand, I looked at the blackened parchment. The words “‫“ ”עם לבדד ישכון‬A Nation that dwells alone” jumped out at me. We are alone, however we have each other. It is imperative that we work together to build a stronger, prouder, more knowledgeable, more united, more engaged, more committed Jewish people

WE CANNOT ALLOW ANTISEMITISM TO OBFUSCATE OUR PRIORITIES than ever before. Our greatest and most enduring response has always been “as they afflict us, so we shall be stronger and multiply.” Surely this is the greatest communal response we can garner? I’m yet to meet a young Jew inspired to form a strong link in our 4,000-year-old chain for negative reasons alone. However, I have met many thousands motivated to do just that following an educational experience in Israel. An erudite, intelligent and passionate presentation of Jewish thought, culture or practice. A journey to Poland where

they connect with the miracle of Jewish survival, perhaps, or even the introduction of a committed Jewish social circle into their lives. Young people need positive reasons to belong. They need not a summer of discontent, but a season of positive inspiration. The good news is we can provide that. Our calendar, traditions and culture is replete with ideas to invigorate and motivate positive engagement. On seder night we lift a glass of wine and proclaim that we have withstood the vicissitudes of time. But we’re not lifting the cup to gloat over our vanquished enemies, rather on the Judaism that ensured our survival. And in every generation, while ensuring we vanquish repugnant enemies, we must equally ensure our Jewish future with an equal if not greater investment of time, effort and thought in new approaches that successfully engage, inspire and energise our younger generation to take up the mantle, not only of Jewish survival – but Jewish revival.

Teaching LGBT+ needs compromise on all sides JUDITH NEMETH

DIRECTOR, VALUES FOUNDATION FOR FAITH AND FAMILIES IN EDUCATION

T

here are many misunderstandings when it comes to teaching children about relationships and sex education, all the way from the classroom to ministerial level. Ofsted has still not committed itself to a policy on assessing the subject from 2020. In Yehudis Fletcher’s article in last week’s Jewish News, she references the teaching of LGBT+ out of context. Issues that do not exist were stated by Ms Fletcher as fact. Stating that “the Torah says LGBT acts are forbidden” is not a misreading. However, claiming LGBT relationships are removed from homosexual acts is like holding the ice cream in front of a child but telling them they may not taste it. What a shame innocent, same-gender friendships and relationships that children enjoy in school are given, from an early age, a sexual frame of reference and innuendo. Many people of Generation Z have written how, for example, they were called “tomboy”

as a child but it was left as just that. They are relieved not to be children in this day and age, having to face the possibility of being given puberty blockers. Of course the Torah recognises that LGBT people exist – otherwise it would not mention them. However, stating the act is an “abomination” informs us in no uncertain terms that these activities cannot be part of Orthodox Jewish practice. Of course there is “ambiguity and grey areas”, as Ms Fletcher states. That is why we have volumes of Talmud where this is discussed in immense detail by great scholars. Schools who hold faith and traditional family values close to their heart are as worried about bullying as any adult should be. However, rather than focusing on the eight percent of bullying that is homophobic, these schools ensure the enactment of their policy on bullying is robust across all issues. Additionally, any child who has concerns about any aspect of their development will be dealt with appropriately and sensitively by a pastoral team. Furthermore, since when has what is considered “alternative” had to hold a major place in education? According to the latest

INNOCENT SAMEGENDER SCHOOL FRIENDSHIPS ARE PLACED IN A SEXUAL FRAMEWORK SATS results, one third of children leave school illiterate and innumerate, so our attention needs to be focused on more pressing issues. I did not claim, as Ms Fletcher suggests, that alternative families should be shunned. I merely referred to the democratic right of schools and parents to decide what they wish to teach their children and when. We will not be dictated to by a government department who now wish to mandate how to educate. We have educated generations very successfully for thousands of years. We are not going to change how we do this now. Unfortunately for the LGBT community,

it is all or nothing: promote us and you’re fine; refuse to teach in a manner we approve and its homophobic. Further, regarding body autonomy and boundaries, take a look at the excellent publications and teaching schemes both here and in the USA from an Orthodox perspective that teach awareness of predators to children. They do so in a refined and dignified way that does not vulgarise human behaviour, does not downplay the importance of privacy and gives children the ability to recognise intrusion where it exists. I recently asked a senior very well-respected rabbinic figure how he would approach someone who feels they prefer their own gender. His reply sums up the maxim: “Love thy neighbour as thyself. He said: “I acknowledge his feelings and, as the Torah forbids the physical acts, I have a duty to simultaneously and sensitively help him get a better understanding of the Torah.” Respecting the viewpoint of the Jewish faith towards the LGBT+ community is all the tolerance we are requesting. This will ensure everyone’s rights remain equal.

Sharing the prophets of interfaith comedy ASHLEY BLAKER

INTERNATIONAL COMEDY ICON

T

ouring a comedy show with a Muslim comedian? I’m not entirely sure what I was thinking when I had the idea last September. I definitely thought it would be an interesting experience and that audiences would find the contrast fascinating. No question, after performing solo for the past four years, I fancied sharing the stage with someone else. It can be a lonely job and the idea of having someone else to chat with backstage was very appealing. What I didn’t predict, however, was the incredible positivity that has come from mine and Imran Yusuf’s Prophet Sharing tour. Of course, should we ever be up for a Nobel Peace Prize, I will lie and say that uniting the Jewish and Muslim communities was always my intention. That may be wishful thinking, but our experiences have been almost as incredible. Wherever we’ve been, the good feeling that the show has engendered has been palpable. Even more, it has been incredible to see posts on social media and emails in my inbox

that testify to the positive impact of this tour. Most notable was a performance at the Curve Theatre in Leicester where Jewish and Muslim audience members swapped emails and vowed to stay in touch. I saw on Twitter a man called Imran Hajii tweet how he was “looking forward to keeping in touch with the new friends we have made”, while Jeeda Joseph went so far as writing a whole blog post about her experience. She wrote: “It quickly dawned on us that this was a group of people who were interested in knowing more about each other and there was a mutual respect of faith around the venue.” While waiting to go in to the theatre she met a Jewish couple from Israel called Naomi and David who were visiting the UK

AFTER PERFORMING SOLO FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS, I FANCIED SHARING THE STAGE

for the week. She also met a Christian couple from Wyoming, in the US, whom they invited to their mosque (the photos of this American Christian couple inside an east Midlands mosque are worth heading to the blog for alone). Similarly, I received an email from an audience member at the Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham called Aiysha: “I personally don’t know much about Judaism, only that we pray to the same God and Saturday is your holy day. I’m hoping to visit the synagogue in Birmingham to learn more.” She also said she was inspired to improve

relations between Jews and Muslims and asked what could she do as a next step. On the other hand, Jane Habib Myers didn’t need to ask for suggestions. I spotted her post in the Edgware Families Facebook group saying she had been to our show at JW3 and now wanted to invite over a local Muslim family to experience a Jewish Friday night dinner. My wife tried to wangle an invite for our whole family instead, but Jane wasn’t having any of it. The bottom line is always that it has to be funny and I hope our audiences have left feeling very well entertained. But if along the way we can help build some bridges between the Jewish and Muslim community then that would be a great thing. Shared humour points to shared experiences, and both Imran and I have always felt that we have more uniting us than dividing us. We live in worrying times with the far right on the rise and Jews and Muslims have both experienced tragedies in our houses of worship this past year. More than ever we need to understand that we are stronger together than apart and, if we can help effect that, Imran and I would both be very proud. And, of course, as the pun in the title suggests, it would be nice to make some money as well.

5 COOPER AT WJR

6

Yvette Cooper launched an exhibition at the Wakefield Museum in West Yorkshire created with help from Syrian refugees on World Jewish Relief (WJR)’s STEP programme, which strives to get refugees across West Yorkshire and Coventry into work. Participants discovered links between Syria and their new home, including Wakefield’s history of importing liquorice from Syria in the early 20th century. Cooper said: “The exhibition is a brilliant example of the community coming together.” Cooper is pictured with Wakefield Museum workshop participants, WJR’s Janice Lopatkin and Horton Housing Association’s Ursula Lowe.

Film / Weekend FILM

There’s something about

MARIANNE

Stephen Applebaum speaks to Nick Broomfield, whose new film explores the lifelong love of Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse

J

ust days before she died in 2016, Leonard Cohen sent an especially touching message to his ailing former lover and muse, Marianne Ihlen, the inspiration for classic songs such as So Long, Marianne and Bird on the Wire. In it, he told his Norwegian love: “I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine.” Four months later, Cohen’s prophesy came true and he also passed away, aged 82. Their relationship is now explored in Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love, the latest documentary from Nick Broomfield, who bookends the film with Marianne’s death, and fills the space in between with archive photos, previously unseen footage shot by the great D A Pennebaker, and new interviews. He chronicles Cohen’s transition into songwriting, following his failure as a novelist, and the impact on Marianne and Axel, her son from a disastrous marriage. At the centre of it all is Hydra, the Greek island where expats built a bohemian community, and the destination where Cohen and Ihlen first met, in 1960, and lived together. Broomfield knows this world. He visited Hydra as a callow 20-year-old law student, a year after the release of Cohen’s 1967 debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen,, and himself became one of Marianne’s lovers. Encouraged by her, Broomfield turned to filmmaking. When the young traveller had arrived on Hydra, Cohen was in New York and unknown to him. “I was pretty naïve,” Broomfield recalls. “His album had come out, but I didn’t hear it until I went to the island. I could sense that he was held in a kind of reverence and people were in awe about him – I felt very out of my depth, and pretty inadequate.”

ROBERT CAPA: D-DAY IN 35MM

A fascinating look at the 1944 D-Day landings at Omaha Beach in Normandy, as seen through the lens of one Jewish photographer. Published in LIFE magazine, Robert Capa’s visually impactful images brought the reality of war to the world. At Imperial War Museum, until 29 September. www.iwm.org.uk

He found Hydra “spellbinding”, but it was a difficult place, “because there’s no rules, and no structure”. For expats “looking for an alternative way of living, or experimenting with drugs and relationships, it was ruthless”. While some went too far and self-destructed, Cohen thrived. “He was a very disciplined, threepage-a-day kind of guy, and kept to that throughout his life,” says Broomfield. When Cohen was growing up, his father had wanted to send him to Kingston Military Academy but, after he died, Cohen’s mother decided on a different life for him. “He always had a great admiration for the military though, and was sorely tempted to join the Israeli army, later on. He wasn’t a straightforward 60s poet.” Another formative influence was his grandfather, a Talmud scholar, who encouraged Cohen to read religious texts. Shared Jewish roots later bonded Cohen and a Romanian-born Canadian poet, Irving Layton, but Marianne wasn’t Jewish, and it was important to Cohen that the mother of his children be so.

On one occasion, Broomfield recalls that she asked him to drive her to Bath for an abortion. “I think Leonard was very traditional. I know from talking to other people who knew them that there were a number of other abortions. When Marianne talks in the film about not having children with him, you can tell it’s a deep regret.” It would be easy to see Marianne as the muse who got walked over. There are periods of loneliness and longing in the film, but it was the 1960s and she and Cohen had an open relationship; one of his encounters was with Janis Joplin. Broomfield claims Marianne never harboured any bitterness towards Cohen, and only felt hurt that he hadn’t bought her a new house on Hydra to replace the one she’d sold when he was struggling. “They were devoted, one way or another, to each other. Marianne learnt so much from Leonard, and he obviously benefited so much from her pushing him into what he became,” Broomfield insists. “I think she saw their relationship as something hugely enriching and positive in her life.”  Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love (12A) opens from Friday

Do Not Photograph

LONDON-BORN PHOTOGRAPHER JOSHUA HARUNI offers an unprecedented inside look at Chasidic life with more than 90 stunning images in his new book, Do Not Photograph – the words he heard uttered repeatedly when he first embarked on his project. Despite resistance and open hostility from many of the individuals he attempted to photograph, Haruni, who now lives in Jerusalem, reached an understanding about his work with the leader of the Pinsk-Karlin Chasidic sect, allowing him to forge lifelong friendships and a series of incredible images taken over eight years that offer an insight into an otherwise closed community. “My photographic interest in this subject began with my curiosity in the resurgence of belief in ‘Practical Kabbalah’, which involves techniques aimed specifically at altering natural states or events,” Haruni says. “As a journalist, I wanted to explore the renewed faith in this esoteric belief system among mainstream Israeli-Jewish society. Ultimately, the dynamic of that project generated numerous leads into photographing the Chasidic way of life, which in turn evolved into a separate project altogether.” A selection of Haruni’s photographs went on display at Jerusalem’s Israel Museum in the 2012 exhibition, A World Apart Next Door – Glimpses into the Life of Hassidic Jews. Caron Bluestone visits the ultimate luxury resort in Koh Kood, one of Thailand’s last unspoilt islands

Living the

I

’m a massive fan of barefoot luxury – so when resort chain Soneva announced it had opened a dedicated kosher kitchen at one of its Thailand properties, I needed little persuasion to go out there to investigate. Soneva Kiri is a heaven-on-earth resort located on Koh Kood, one of Thailand’s last unspoilt islands, with a population of just 2,500, one road, very few cars and an abundance of stunning beaches, verdant jungle and exquisite waterfalls. Whisked through the airport like visiting dignitaries and driven out to the runway, our adventure in paradise began. Just a 90-minute flight on Soneva’s private plane from Bangkok, passing over stunning scenery, azure seas, dotted with white sandy coastline, my apprehension of being in an eight-seater plane, albeit in luxury, dissipated in minutes. This was our first long-haul trip with two young children and worth it alone for the draw of an all-private villa resort with its very own waterslide. Make no mistake, this Robinson Crusoe experience is no tacky water park. Instead, it boasts your very own butler, a buggy that gets re-parked facing the right direction as if by magic, rain covers that are neatly refolded away when the sun comes back out, a private pool and even a private beach. Our Mrs Friday, Taeko, was so gracious and obliging that we could have asked her to pack herself into our suitcase and come home with us. Sustainability and slow living go handin-hand at this luxury resort. It’s a ‘no news, no shoes’ sort of place, where you can forget about the outside world and leave your shoes behind at the resort jetty until you leave. Now that’s true freedom! Looking around Soneva Kiri, we were impressed by the palatial villas, which blend into their natural surroundings. Ours had romantic four-poster beds draped with mosquito nets, treehouses with bunk beds and a full-sized table football for the kids, as well two swimming pools.

THAI LIFE! Soneva Kiri’s extraordinary outdoor cinema

Outside, there are plenty of shaded retreats and sun loungers, while the outdoor bathrooms are enough to blow your mind. Sunken bathtubs for bathing under the stars, rain showers and plush day beds – this is a bathroom set-up that has to be seen to be believed. Little ones are especially well-catered for. Both the Den, a giant bamboo playground shaped like a manta ray, aimed at older children, and Eco Den, for smaller children, plan thoughtful activities for all ages. Foodie guests are indulged and can choose from opulent in-villa dining, to authentic,

mouthwatering Thai dishes in the mangrove, which can be reached by boat and look out onto the spectacular river at sunset. There’s a refrigerated chocolate room, stocked daily with handmade delicacies and an ice cream parlour. For the ultimate unique experience, we enjoyed afternoon tea in a bamboo tree-pod, which lifted us high up into the rainforest with sweeping views out to the sea. Notably, our waiter arrived on a zip-wire! Aside from our own stretch in front of the villa, North Beach is the resort’s private beach that offers the softest, whitest sand and warm shallow seas, the hues of blue only thought possible in your imagination. A five-minute exhilarating speedboat journey from the jetty takes you to this paradise on earth. Elsewhere, we saw Jupiter while stargazing in the resort observatory and watched a film at Cinema Paradiso, an extraordinary outdoor cinema under the stars. The unspoilt surrounds of Koh Kood is how Thailand used to be. The Discovery Tour took us to the top of a temple with vistas out to Cambodia and to the fascinating Ao Salad fishing village, where people live suspended above the water. Our day ended with an easy hike to Klong Chao waterfall, towels and an exotic fruit platter awaiting us upon our return. It’s no surprise that Thailand has always appealed to young Jewish travellers. Soneva Kiri has just given the rest of us a reason to return.

T

SWEET CHILLI

he dish is a simple sautéthen-braise affair and the sauce is a simple chilli and soy mixture. Together, they make something so good and so versatile that the only right thing to do is to pull the recipe out regularly. Whether made with chicken or another meat, the dish is week night-easy, but it’s also the kind of recipe that you could happily serve for a party – double it, if you’d like, and make a pile of rice to keep it company. It’s not fancy; it’s just what everyone wants.

CHICKEN THIGHS 1. In a heavy based pot that can go on the hob, warm 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the onion, ginger and garlic, season lightly with salt and cook, stirring, until they soften and are translucent not browned (about 5 minutes). 2. Add the white wine, increase heat and cook, stirring, until most of the wine evaporates (about 2 minutes). Again, don’t colour the onions. Transfer the ingredients to a bowl. 3. Return the pot to medium heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Place the thighs in the pot and brown on all sides, adding more oil if necessary. (If the thighs will be crowded, do them in two batches.) Discard the oil. If you’ve got burned bits stuck on the bottom of the pot, remove the chicken and scrub the pot, then return the chicken to it. Return the onion mixture to the pot, along with any accumulating juices, add the chilli and soy sauces, mustard and Sriracha and stir. Season lightly and put the lid on the pot.

SERVES: 4

INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons canola or other neutral oil, or as needed 1 medium onion, finely chopped, rinsed and patted dry 1½ to 3 teaspoons minced peeled fresh ginger 2 garlic cloves, germ removed and crushed Fine sea salt ¼ cup (60 ml) white wine patted dry

5. Transfer the chicken to a serving platter and spoon over some sauce. Sprinkle with spring onions and pepper flakes. Serve the sauce separately.

Freshly ground pepper ½ cup (120 ml) Thai sweet chilli sauce ⅓ cup (80 ml) soy sauce 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (preferably French) 1 to 1½ teaspoons Sriracha (to taste) Sliced spring onions and crushed red pepper flakes, for serving (optional)

SEDRA Pinchas BY RABBI SAM TAYLOR Parshat Pinchas features the appointment of Joshua as leader of the Jewish people. Our sages comment that Joshua earned this privilege through his devoted service to Moses’s study hall. Specifically, Joshua took upon himself the responsibility of setting the mats and benches in the study hall every day. Why did this act earn him the distinction of succeeding Moses? Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch suggests Joshua’s commitment to the physical necessities of the study hall demonstrated his devout sense of kavod haTorah, respect for Torah, but also revealed his respect to all students of Torah, not just the elite. He concerned himself not only with the honour of Moses and his best students, but with the needs and respect of everyone who walked through the doors. Along the same lines, we may suggest that Joshua’s indiscriminate respect for all students reflected the honour he afforded to each individual, regardless of social or academic rank. He saw to it that every student would feel comfortable in Moses’ study hall, without singling out certain individuals from among others. It was Joshua who could ensure that our ancestors would not be ‘like sheep without a shepherd’. Like his predecessor, he cared for each one of his sheep, without exception, and as a result was the right man to lead the nation into the Promised Land.

What’s in a number?

BY RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF To depict the number five on a die, the four directions of space, which would otherwise remain separate, connect around a central point. Five conceptually is the ability to bring disparate parts to coalesce and stand together. It is where individuals become a group. In fact, in Hebrew a group of five is called an agudah, a unified bundle. This idea is expressed by the five fingers that we have on each hand; the hand unifies the fingers to work as one. Perhaps this is why we have five books of the Torah. Each one stands alone, but join together to make one Sefer Torah. The number five is of particular significance to me as one of my teachers, Rabbi Noach Weinberg, always used to talk

about what he termed ‘five finger clarity’. By this, he meant that the theoretical concepts we were studying need to be as

THE DAY WILL COME WHEN WE’LL DEPART FROM THIS WORLD WITH OPEN PALMS

SALE

real to us as our five fingers. Just as we live with the reality of our hands and make use of them constantly, so too should we live with the reality of the principles and faith around which we live our lives. In Sephardi culture, it is popular to display an open hand termed chamsa (Hebrew for five) as a way of warding off the ‘evil eye’. One explanation for this is that the evil eye comes as a result of jealousy of other people’s belongings. A way to mitigate against this is to remember that the day will come when we will depart from this world with open palms, with our five fingers stretched out. This is a reality check to remind us that we can’t take with us any of our possessions. When we have our priorities clear with five finger clarity, there is no room for either confusion or jealousy.  Rabbi Naftali Schiff is founder and chief executive of Jewish Futures

The Bible Says What? ‘We honour four matriarchs, but there should be six’ BY RABBI SANDRA KVIAT “Only three are referred to as patriarchs; and only four are referred to as matriarchs.” (Talmud) Zilpah and Bilhah aren’t names that are familiar to most Jews, yet they gave birth to four of the 12 tribes of Israel. The passages of Torah in which this happens are deeply troubling and throw up many issues around consent and coercion. The handmaidens (slaves) of Jacob’s wives Leah and Rachel, Zilpah and Bilhah, are “given” to Jacob by them in order to bear him children, though rabbinic tradition tries to soften the stance by claiming they were the half-sisters of Leah and Rachel, or second wives. After, we assume, being forced into/expected to sleep with Jacob, their children (Gad, Asher, Dan and Naphtali) are “adopted” by Rachel and Leah, and Zilpah and Bilhah disappear from view again, their roles as surrogate mothers spent.

Despite playing such a key role in what became the Jewish people, the handmaidens are sidelined and ignored. They are seen as vessels without any status. Even our own Progressive services and prayer books – which pride themselves on giving equal status to women and always list Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel alongside Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the Amidah – have been silent on Zilpah and Bilhah. But things are starting to change. Modern Jewish feminists are reclaiming Bilhah and Zilpah as matriarchs, and Liberal Judaism is working on a new Siddur that includes them. It is vital Judaism shows its commitment to equality and recognising people whatever their background. We should start by talking about these two forgotten matriarchs.

Progressively Speaking What Alan Turing on the £50 note teaches about the pursuit of justice BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER The recent announcement that Alan Turing, the famed mathematician and computer scientist, will appear on the new £50 note, was the culmination of many years of change where this man had gone from being considered a convicted criminal to a rightly celebrated national hero. Alan Turing achieved a huge amount in his lifetime – from cracking German codes, which some estimate shortened the Second World War by up to two years and saved 14 million lives, to his work as an early pioneer of computers. These contributions would be cut short, though, by his treatment by society. He was convicted for the crime of being gay, forced to undergo chemical castration, was prevented from continuing to work in intelligence because of his conviction and ended up taking his life aged 41. The official treatment of Alan Turing has been a sign of the

progress we have seen in recognition of LGBTQ+ people in this country. From a government apology in 2009, to his royal pardon, a law retrospectively exonerating men similarly convicted, and now recognition on our money, Alan Turing has become a symbol of change. We must, however, ensure that our treatment of one man, held up as a symbol of progress, does not mask shortcomings in society at large. Our Jewish tradition implores us we are not just seen to do the right thing, but that we bring about real

and consistent change. In the Torah, we read “justice, justice you shall pursue”. Why is “justice” repeated? Many reasons are given, but one which is relevant here is that we must not just ensure justice is done in a single case, but ensure systemic injustice is also wiped out. LGBTQ+ people in this country and around the world are still discriminated against and persecuted. Injustice remains. Even within the story of Turing lies the work of Ada Lovelace, which Turing built upon, but her contribution is not given the place it deserves. Let’s ensure Turing’s recognition is not hollow, but that his face looks at us from our currency as a sign that we must continue to seek justice every day.  Laura Janner-Klausner is senior rabbi for the Movement for Reform Judaism

ANNA SCHUCHMAN & CHARLOTTE WIKLER HEALTH & FITNESS

ACELIFESTYLE Dear Anna and Charlotte I usually work out in the gym three times a week but I’m going on my summer holidays and my hotel doesn’t have a gym. How can I stay fit while away? Suzie Dear Suzie You’re not the first person to

ask us this so don’t fear; we have some great tips on how you can stay fit and keep in shape without a gym. If you have access to a pool on holiday, then do lots of swimming and try to add more lengths every time you get in the pool. Mix up your strokes and add intervals of speed and recovery. Going for a run or fast power walks are great and you can appreciate your new scenery while you’re at it! You can also do a great body weight HIIT (high intensity interval training) session in the comfort of your hotel room. Depending on your fitness levels, set your interval timer to 40” work/20” rest or if you’re super fit, 50” work/ 10” rest, repeat the circuit

four to five times and do the following: • Squat jumps • Burpees • Push-ups • Ab bikes You should complete this whole workout in 30 minutes and then you can get on with your (sightseeing!) day. Ensure you warm up your body for a couple of minutes before you start and stretch your muscles when you finish. Also, remember that if you usually work out hard three times per week your body would really appreciate some rest and recovery, so stay active and move lots, but don’t panic – you will rebuild your strength and fitness very quickly post-holiday. Have a great time!

now agree that it is time for them to move to more suitable accommodation. They really do not want even to consider moving into residential care, but it looks like Jewish Blind & Disabled might be the ideal solution for them. Could you help? Jennifer Dear Jennifer Thanks for getting in touch. I have only recently joined Jewish Blind & Disabled as its chief executive but can already see how our facilities could be ideal for your parents. We could provide your parents with their own one or two-bedroom mobility apartment, which is specially designed to help your mother to manage as much as possible for herself, which I think will

help to restore a lot of her sense of well-being. Our 24/7 on-site support will mean that they will both feel more relaxed if your father wants to pop out, as they will have the peace of mind of knowing that there is always someone on hand if needed. And, possibly even more importantly, they will both be able to enjoy socialising with friends and neighbours, either informally or at one of our many organised clubs and activities that take place in each building’s beautiful communal lounge and landscaped gardens. We do have a waiting list, but these are allocated according to need so please do get in touch so we can start the application process, which will hopefully lead to a whole new lease of life for your parents.
