Woman ‘forced to pay husband £50k’ for get Chained wife hands over cash to end 15-year ordeal A woman denied a religious divorce for 15 years has finally received a get – after fulfilling her ex-husband’s demands for £50,000, writes Jenni Frazer. Esther Kahan, a nursery practitioner at Noam Primary School in Wembley, claims she has been left with “mental scars that she knows she will carry for the rest of my life”, after her marriage to Shmiel Kahan. She alleges the emotional upheaval during her marriage – and while she waited
for her get – was so bad she ended up in hospital on a number of occasions. Kahan, once an agunah, or chained wife, says she strongly believes “that the dayanim are simply not doing enough to deal with a major problem”. She feels that various British rabbinical courts “seem unable – or unwilling – to adopt more draconian measures against get refusers”, and says the tough penalties now imposed on recalcitrant husbands in Israel “are proof that more can be done”. Esther and Shmiel Kahan were married in London in 1993, but after the couple had a family, the marriage broke down and Mrs Kahan obtained a civil divorce. But efforts to obtain a get were, she says, stone-
walled by her ex-husband. She says: “I went through the usual channels to try to compel my former husband to give me a get, but was thwarted each time by Mr Kahan, who asked for vast sums of money in return, or attached near-impossible conditions.” Mrs Kahan approached three different Batei Din for help. Today, she declines to name them, but it is believed at least two were the London Beth Din and the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations
(UOHC). In 2015, in an effort to crack down on men who would not give their “chained wives” a get, the London Beth Din sent posters to a number of synagogues in Golders Green and Hendon, denouncing the “abhorrent conduct” of Shmiel Kahan. The posters said he had refused his wife a get for nine years and called on him to “do the right thing”. But Mrs Kahan said she was “unimpressed” by the campaign, and observed that a planned demonstration outside a synagogue which continued to support Mr Kahan, despite knowing he was withholding a get, never took place. She Shmiel Kahan refused to grant his wife a get for 15 years
said one rabbi advised her “not to expect that she would ever obtain a get”, and says now that “I was never convinced they did all they could to help”. However, Dayan Gelley, Rosh Beth Din of the London Beth Din, said: “Our principle view is that where a get ought to be given it should be given without demands. Every effort was expended over many years by the dayanim, registrar and our dedicated get caseworker to resolve Mrs Kahan’s circumstances within the realm of halacha. While even one aguna is one too many, the London Beth Din is pleased
that over recent years, through perseverance, we have been able to successfully resolve a number of difficult cases.” A spokesperson for the UOHC told Jewish News: “We are happy this case has been settled for the sake of both parties and their families.” A friend of Mr Kahan’s said at the time that he had been trying to sort out the issue, and felt the condemnation was unfair. He had, said the friend, gone to the UOHC. “He has asked me to say he wants this matter settled, he wants to give a get, but outstanding matters have to be settled. He has taken halachic advice.” Despite that claim, nothing happened.
Mrs Kahan finally obtained her freedom in a dramatic way just before Pesach this year. Mr Kahan, at the time of the London Beth Din campaign, was said to be living in New York, but in March this year Mrs Kahan spotted him in London. She made one last-ditch effort to see if he would release her. Through a friend, she asked what were his conditions for issuing a get. He asked for £50,000 — and Mrs Kahan raised the sum within three days. She said: “The get was quickly arranged by the UOHC before Mr Kahan could withdraw his offer.” Mrs Kahan told Jewish News this week that “in the past he [Mr Kahan] had asked for a lot more money, which I was unable to give him.
When he said he was willing to accept £50,000, I knew I had to try to raise that amount and thankfully I was able to”. While financial settlements are common in civil divorces, they are extremely rare in cases such as this. Mrs Kahan added: “There are many other agunot who are suffering. I hope that telling my story will give them hope that one day they will be released from their situations.” Jewish News called Mr Kahan this week but his UK phone line was disconnected.

‘I was hoodwinked’ On 18 December 2010, a British-born Israeli tour guide, Kay Wilson, was leading a hike in a forest near Beit Shemesh and Mata, west of Jerusalem, together with an American Christian woman, Kristine Luken. They were approached by two Palestinian men, tied up and attacked with a serrated knife. Luken was killed. Wilson was seriously injured but survived by playing dead. She later escaped and made her way to a picnic area the next day. She was found with multiple stab wounds, her hands still bound. Her injuries were life-changing and left her disabled. On 26 January 2011, Israeli police arrested four Palestinian men from two villages
near Hebron. They were charged with killing Luken, the attempted killing of Wilson, and the murder of an Israeli woman, Neta Sorek, in 2009. Both men received life sentences. Wilson is concerned that UK aid may have unwittingly contributed towards her attackers’ ‘salaries’ and has been writing to MPs and peers for years, asking them to investigate the final destination of UK aid. However, because she no longer lives in the UK, MPs have been unable to help her. “DfID have been aiding and abetting the terrorists who tried to murder me, and have done so without any blemish of conscience,” she said. “DFiD’s so-
called robust safeguards and their brazen confidence that no money goes to prisoner payments is a cruel lie and a sham. “I am looking forward to a public inquiry and the appropriate penalties for those who have heartlessly and consistently lied to me, hoodwinked my family and deceived the Terror victim Kay Wilson
FROM TAX PAYERS TO SLAYERS? BY JONATHAN TURNER CHIEF EXECUTIVE, UK LAWYERS FOR ISRAEL
The documents ordered to be disclosed are likely to provide further confirmation that UK aid money was used to fund the salaries of convicted Palestinian terrorists. Ministers repeatedly insisted that “we know where our money goes” and that it is not used for payment of terrorists’ salaries. However, it seems that for several years the money sent by DfID was paid into the same Palestinian Authority account from which the funds used to pay the terrorists’ salaries were drawn. The audits should tell us more about what did and didn’t happen. Already we have learned from the Information Commissioner’s decision that DfID does not hold audit reports of any accounts into which the funds donated by Britain were disbursed between 2010 and 2015. This calls into
question the assurances given by ministers that the audits showed that the money did not go to terrorists. The decision also tells us that DFID doesn’t have the terms of reference for the audits carried out by PwC of the World Bank fund through which the British money was transferred. So how could they properly rely on these audits? PwC has already said that the narrow scope of its work did not require it to consider whether the funds were used to pay terrorists. Ministers and officials should not hand out hundreds of millions of pounds with no idea how it is audited. The decision by the Information Commissioner’s Office is the culmination of almost four years’ work by UK Lawyers for Israel, in trying to obtain these documents. We started in November 2015 by asking the World Bank, then its auditors PwC, and finally the Government by suggesting questions made by MPs and Lords and then by a Freedom of Information Request.

Antisemitism stats / News
Hate hits six-month high The Community Security Trust (CST) recorded the highest number of antisemitic incidents ever in the first half of 2019, with almost 40 percent online, writes Stephen Oryzczuk. Publishing its half-yearly report this week, the principal antisemitism monitor in the UK reported a record 892 incidents between January and June, a 10 percent increase over the same period last year. The main shift is the number of incidents of antisemitic abuse on social media, which jumped by 46 percent to 323 cases and now makes up 36 percent of the total. “This increase [in online incidents] is the most obvious single factor explaining why the overall total rose by 10 per cent in the first half of the year,” the CST said. “It is difficult to assess whether this reflects an increase in the amount of antisemitism online or more reporting.” CST, which disburses an annual Sixty percent of antisemitic attacks include daubings £14m government security grant, said that if the online antisemitic abuse rise in incidents and mirrored the ening divisions in our society and it comes from abroad it is still logged as tensions seen across society. “This is causing increasing anxiety in the an antisemitic incident in the UK if is the third year in a row that CST Jewish community.” Commenting on the figures, Home has seen an increase,” he said. “The the victim is in Britain. CST, HEAD OF POLICY Our latest antisemitic incident report shows the increasingly important role played by social media in the spread of this very old hatred. The statistics, published today and covering the first six months of this year, show that the proportion of antisemitic incidents recorded by CST that took place online has gone up from 27 per cent in the first half of last year to 36 per cent this year. This partly reflects the fact that a lot of antisemitism at the moment takes place in the context of arguments about politics, and much of that arguing happens on social media platforms. Social media means that an antisemite in Bristol can hurl racist abuse at

form of racist abuse. We will continue to work closely with the Jewish community.” In addition to the surge in online abuse, the continuing controversy over Labour Party antisemitism also fuelled the figures, with 55 Labourrelated incidents in the weeks after several MPs resigned in February, citing concerns over Jew-hatred. Of more concern was the 37 percent increase in violent antisemitic assaults, up from 62 in the first six
months of 2018 to 85 in the first half of 2019. However, none were classified as ‘extreme violence’, meaning grievous bodily harm or threat to life. The CST statistics showed that two thirds of all antisemitic incidents were recorded in London and Manchester, home to the country’s two largest Jewish populations. Smaller numbers were also reported in Hertfordshire, Merseyside, Gateshead, Birmingham, Leeds and Wales. Editorial comment, page 14

a Jew in Manchester without ever meeting them face to face; and the Jewish Mancunian will hear them, which they wouldn’t have done when the antisemite in Bristol was just mouthing off to their friends rather than broadcasting their hate to the world. Even worse, social media means that dozens of antisemites can send thousands of antisemitic tweets to the same Jew, leaving them feeling as if the world wants them dead. There is a belief that this kind of thing isn’t ‘real’ antisemitism, because tweets are, well, just tweets. But the web is increasingly where we get our news and entertainment; where we stay in touch with friends and family. If your world resides within a smartphone, and that phone is full of people telling you that you are a ‘dirty Zio whore’ who deserves to die, then social media is not a bit player in our fight: it is the main battleground and the engine of the new anti-Jewish hate we face.

Labour submits MP holds talks at embassy BBC complaint The Labour Party has submitted a formal complaint to the BBC about the recent Panorama documentary on antisemitism. A corporation spokesperson confirmed: “We now received a Labour Party complaint about the edition of Panorama, and will respond directly in due course.” Is Labour Anti-Semitic?, broadcast on 10 July, claimed that senior figures, including Jeremy Corbyn’s communications chief Seumas Milne and the party’s general secretary Jennie Formby interfered in antisemitism
investigations. Corbyn has accused the documentary of “many inaccuracies”, saying it adopted a “pre-determined position” before it was aired. Defending the broadcast at the time, the BBC said: “We stand by our journalism and completely reject any accusations of bias or dishonesty. The investigation was not pre-determined, it was driven by the evidence. “The programme adhered to the BBC’s editorial guidelines, including contacting the Labour Party in advance of the broadcast for a full right of reply.”

MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan
Labour MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan held talks at the Israeli embassy in London after clashing with the deputy Israeli ambassador over a recent Gaza trip. Allin-Khan, who was an emergency doctor before she became MP for Tooting in 2016, went to Gaza and the West Bank this year, to explore the issues Palestinians face when
accessing hospitals. In order to highlight the issue of families being separated because of security concerns, she took part in a “lively” debate with Deputy Israeli Ambassador Sharon Bar-Li on BBC radio “which continued in the green room”. The diplomat later invited Allin-Khan to continue the discussion
at the embassy, which Allin-Khan accepted. Last week she tweeted that it had been “a pleasure” to meet Bar-Li again, adding that it was a “constructive discussion”. However, this prompted online abuse from Palestinian supporters. One user said Allin-Khan “wants to be the next UK prime minister, all starts at the Israeli embassy”.
SHADOW MINISTER SORRY FOR HATE SLUR
Labour’s shadow immigration minister Afzal Khan has apologised for sharing “an antisemitic conspiracy” on Facebook in 2015, saying he was “mortified”. Now an MP, Azfal shared the video when he was a member of the European Parliament. It showed the Jewish–American comedian and TV host Jon Stewart talking about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, underneath the caption read: “Israel-British-SwissRothschilds crime syndicate” and “mass-murdering Rothschilds
Israeli mafia criminal liars”. When alerted to the underlying text, Khan said: “I am mortified and sincerely sorry about this genuine accident. “I didn’t read the text below, which contained an antisemitic conspiracy about the Rothschilds. I would never have shared it if I had seen that.” North West Friends of Israel co-chair Raphi Bloom said the conspiracies about the Rothschilds was “a well-
known antisemitic trope about Jews dominating the world… I think it is disgraceful and I would like to see action.” Khan is well-known in the north-west for his interfaith work, including co-founding the Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester. He recently drew anger by saying the Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn was “the target of a relentless smear campaign, orchestrated by the wealthy establishment”.
MP drops f-bomb on Twitter A Labour MP has told a campaigner against antisemitism in the party to “just f*** off”, during an online spat about a prospective candidate. The Ilford North politician Wes Streeting had an argument online with Euan Phillips, a spokesman for Labour Against Antisemitism. The row was initiated after Streeting shared a video with prospective parliamen-
tary candidate Ali Milani, speaking about antisemitic comments in 2012 and 2013, and how he has learned about Jew-hate since and visited Auschwitz. Streeting said the remarks were inexcusable, but he should also be judged on how he’s “listened and learned”. Phillips then replied to Streeting, saying his comment “qualifies as the lamest defence of #LabourAntisem-
Williamson ‘probe’ Suspended Labour MP Chris Williamson claims he’s been referred to the party’s top disciplinary body to face expulsion. The left-winger’s case was sent to the National Constitutional Committee, after it was referred to a specialist panel earlier in July by a disputes panel on Labour’s governing body, the National Executive Committee. Taking to Twitter, an account called ‘Campaign for Chris Williamson’ said his referral to the NCC was “a total subversion of due process”. “We understand this to be unlawful and against
Labour’s rules. Legal action against the party machine is underway and a crowdfunder is coming soon.” Williamson wrote, “solidarity now would be very much appreciated”. Labour has been approached for comment. This comes after the Derby North MP was readmitted to the party last month with a formal warning, and suspended again over the antisemitism row. Williamson was suspended in February after video footage emerged of him saying Labour’s reaction to antisemitism claims had led to the party being “demonised”.
itism from a so-called moderate I have ever seen. And there have been a few.” Lashing out at Phillips, the MP defended his remark, saying: “Oh please just do one, Euan. I am saying very clearly that there’s a place for genuine repentance and redemption. Of course there is. But if you’re throwing stones at people for excusing antisemitism honestly just f*** off.”
NEWS IN BRIEF
BLAIR TO SPEAK AT BOARD DINNER Tony Blair is to be the keynote speaker at this year’s Board of Deputies dinner in November, the Jewish representative body has said. The former Labour prime minister has shared his increasing bewilderment and disbelief at the antisemitism crisis that has rocked his party, and last week refused to confirm that he would vote for Labour in the next election. Last month, he told an audience at Bar-Ilan University that the crisis “could imperil the Labour Party, and it should, if it’s not rooted out and defeated”. Last year, the keynote speaker at the the Board’s dinner was Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

Grants for interfaith and Jewish projects revealed Details of government grants to Jewish, Christian, Muslim and interfaith projects have been revealed for the first time. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government gave the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust £1.14million last year, its second biggest recipient. Only the Church Urban Fund received more. Funding to B’nai Brith stopped; the department had given the international organisation £81,000 over the previous two years for its Bridges Not Boycotts campaign, which helped to pay for a conference in the European Parliament. There was also £62,000 for the Tough Options programme of the Forum for Discussion of Israel and Palestine (FODIP). This teaches 14-to-19-year-olds how to look at how difficult issues, specifically the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and its impact on UK communities . In addition, Islamophobia monitoring charity Tell Mama received £892,000, taking its funding over the past four years to £2.4m. The charity was set up by Fiyaz Mughal with help from the CST.

known figures, and of fraud, and was jailed for 18 years. Rabbi Janner-Klausner told the Jewish News that the family had had “wall-to-wall support from the Jewish community”, adding: “It has actually brought us closer as a family. The World Zionist Organisation’s Golden Golda Awards took place in London for the first time, with three “inspiring” female winners chosen for their Zionist advocacy. The awards, held last week at Kent House in Knightsbridge, are named after former Israeli premier Golda Meir. This year’s winners were Ilana Metzger, Joy Wolfe and Ruth Jacobs. All three were praised for their support of Israel: Jacobs and Metzger are based in London and Wolfe in Manchester, where she is president of Stand With Us UK, honorary president of Manchester Zionist Central Council and vice-president of the Zionist Federation. A WZO-UK spokesperson said: “It has been inspiring for us to share your story and tell more about your contribution to all honourable guests. Your energy in contributing to Zionism and your special connection to Israel is yahid sgula [of special virtue]”. The prizes were awarded by Marina Koritny, head of the WZO’s department for the promotion of aliyah.

TEACHER KINDER HONOURED BY UNI
Former Board ‘mensch’ mourned
A London university has awarded an honorary doctorate to a former Brent teacher who came to the UK on the Kindertransport and later established the Holocaust Centre and Museum. The University of Roehampton recognised Vera Schaufeld MBE, who arrived in England in 1939 on the Kindertransport. “Vera is an inspirational person, whose suffering created in her a drive to support others,” said Professor Ezingeard, the University’s Vice-Chancellor.
DAWSON IS NEW CHAIR OF JAMI The community’s leading mental health charity has appointed the new chair of its Board of Trustees. Adam Dawson will take over from Doug Krikler at the helm of Jami, who stepped down from the role after six years. The Jewish mental health charity was founded 30 years ago and helps more than 1,300 people annually. Chief executive Laurie Rackind said: “Adam’s strong empathy with our values brings invaluable experience and expertise.”
Tributes: Dr Kopelowitz has died, aged 92
Former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks and the Board of Deputies president this week paid tribute to much-admired community leader Dr Lionel Kopelowitz, who has died aged 92. Kopelowitz was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1926, and served as Board president from 1985-1991, and President of the National Council for Soviet Jewry. Remaining active until very recently, he was also a VicePresident of the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ). Board president Marie van
der Zyl said she was “deeply saddened” by the passing of one of her predecessors. Van der Zyl added: “He was a forceful figure with strong views and he was extremely generous in his advice and time with me. “His passionate commitment to the Jewish people was evident until his sad passing. I will miss him. We will miss him. We pass our love, admiration and gratitude to his widow Sylvia and to all the family.” Her predecessor, Jonathan Arkush, added: “I gave a tribute at Sunday’s Board meeting. I
referred to him being a completely dedicated servant of the community and a strong proponent of the Board.” Lord Sacks wrote: “He was a larger than life character with his broad northern accent, his frequently worn MCC tie and encyclopaedic knowledge of the prayer book and the Hebrew Bible.” CCJ director Elizabeth Harris-Sawczenko said: “Lionel was the ultimate ‘mensch’ – a man who could be relied upon to act with honesty and integrity for the common good.”

visit since his appointment, Jenrick, 37, visited kosher shops on Golders Green Road last Friday. He also met representatives from organisations including the Community Security Trust, Holocaust Educational Trust and the Union of Jewish Students. Jenrick, MP for Newark, Notts, since 2014, said it was important that he visited the Jewish area within days of assuming his first cabinet job. “I want tackling antisemitism and ensuring that the Jewish community feels protected and respected to be one of my priorities as secretary of state.” He added: “I feel ashamed by the current levels of antisemitism and I think all politicians need to do far more to tackle it. “My last two predecessors, James Brokenshire and Sajid Javid, took this very seriously and I wanted the community to understand that I certainly intend to take it as seriously as they did – to make it one of my personal priorities.” He says the prime minister

He said his connection to the Jewish community forms “a very important and integral part of my life”. He said more had to be done to combat antisemitism. “There is a record of action, but clearly this is an issue that has escalated. Similarly our response needs to increase.” Jenrick, who qualified as a solicitor before holding financial roles at the auctioneer Christie’s, was elected to parliament in 2014. His previous

role was as exchequer secretary to the Treasury. In his new role, he said: “I wanted to reaffirm our complete commitment to delivering the Holocaust memorial. It’s very important to me that we do deliver a memorial that lives up to its promise as the first major national memorial and education centre.” At Carmelli’s in Golders Green, Jenrick met HET chief executive Karen Pol-
lock, Rabbi Harvey Belovski and Daniel Sherman, from the CST. The group visited Head Room, the cafe backed by the Jewish mental health charity Jami, where Jenrick spoke to current and former university students about antisemitism on campuses. Jenrick later said: “I do feel very concerned to hear stories we’ve just listened to. That is something we need to urgently tackle as a society.”

Jewish News meets... Layla Moran MP
‘Anti-Israel hatred does nothing for Palestinians’ Lib Dem MP Layla Moran is fiercely proud of her Palestinian roots – but that doesn’t stop her speaking out against antisemitism, writes Justin Cohen It’s striking how many times MP Layla Moran mentions her mum Randa during our 40-minute chat. “My reference point in many ways is my mother because she taught me values. We’ll often talk when I’m wondering whether or not to speak about a particular issue,” she says, before offering a hint of her feisty side: “Not that she’ll ever tell me what to do – she learnt early on when I was a child that’s not how to deal with me.” So it’s no surprise that it was to her Palestinian parent the Liberal Democrat MP turned when she received a letter recently from a voter who appeared to have been riled by her strident position on antisemitism in the Labour Party. “It said ‘how dare you call yourself Palestinian?’ I found it quite upsetting so I asked if she agreed with the sentiment. She said ‘no, I’m proud of you and it’s because you are Palestinian that it’s right you stand up.’” The ex-teacher became the UK’s first MP of Palestinian descent just two years ago and this is her first interview with a Jewish publication. We meet in a side room in Westminster’s Portcullis House because, she tells me, her own office is on the cosy side. Weeks earlier she had given up a good shot at grander surroundings by deciding not to run for her party’s top job, despite being urged to throw her hat into the ring. Although “education, education, education” has remained her focus as the Lib Dems’ spokesperson on the subject, the 36-year-old’s roots mean her repeated and very public interventions on anti-Israel antisemitism have drawn attention. “It does nothing for the Palestinian cause,” she told the BBC’s Question Time last year. In a further TV appearance she unequivocally condemned posters branding Israel “a racist endeavour”. The MP for Oxford West and Abingdon “completely disagrees” with any suggestion the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism curtails criticism of Israel – as was suggested by some when Labour initially resisted adopting all its examples. She said: “I think you can be strident in your criticism of things that deserve it so long as you are specific. If you are going to criticise Benjamin Netanyahu and the policies of the Israeli government – some of which send shivers up my spine – then you absolutely must criticise them because it’s not in line with British values. But if

The lutely wrong. I don’t think it is that difficult.” Moran – who only recalls one brief encounter way you negotiate a settlement that is genuinely with Jeremy Corbyn during her time in Westmin- advantageous for both sides is to treat both with ster – doesn’t hold back from placing the blame respect – that starts with recognising that we are a for the antisemitism crisis engulfing his party people and deserve a state. You start there. “The symbolism of Britain recognising the squarely at his door. “The buck has to always stop at the top,” she says. “I think he’s a really bad state of Palestine, recognising the fact political leader in the way he’s managed this situation and rights is the part of the Balfour Declaration that what he has therefore ended up doing is allowing was forgotten, would be powerful as a counterbalthe flowering of some of those who are genuinely ance to some of what we’ve seen from Trump.” The Israeli-Palestinian conflict will always be antisemitic to find a home and a voice with his party.” She disagrees with those who call him an deeply personal to Moran but she says she “treads lightly as much as I can” when discussing antisemite, adding: “Where I struggle is why there it, “because there are so many competing hasn’t been stronger leadership from the top.” sides”. It is an approach, she says, inspired Part of a family from Jerusalem which largely by her great-grandfather’s famed memoir The moved away from the region in the 60s, hoping Storyteller of Jerusalem, which paints a picture one day to return, today Moran still has cousins in the city as well as in Ramallah and Jericho. While she is fiercely proud of her heritage, “which is a big part of how I live my life” (and describes easy access to Palestinian food as an advantage of living in London), it brought with it a level of “pressure” when she first entered public life. “How would I navigate it? How much would it define me?” she recalls thinking. “I don’t have a foreign affairs degree, but people would expect me to comment. I squared the circle because my strong liberal values are the basis of everything I do including speaking up for my family and my personal experience of what it means to come from that background.” The Lib Dem high flyer’s most notable intervention came last November when she presenting a bill for the UK to recognise Palestine. While some thought this could disincentivise The Lib Dems’ new leader, Jo Swinson
of friendship between the city’s multi-faith residents in the early 20th century. Certainly, she refuses to see it as a black-and white-issue. She said: “When Hamas declared they didn’t recognise the Israeli state that’s thoroughly unhelpful and ridiculous and we shouldn’t be condoning any sort of violent protest. On both sides there are big flaws that need to be criticised. If international rights are being violated I don’t care who is violating them – we need to stand up against that. I’m sad moderates are made to feel they have to pick a side.” One veteran Palestine campaigner for whom she has little time is George Galloway, who has in the past refused to debate with an Israeli and was recently sacked by talkRADIO after tweeting Liverpool’s victory in the Champions League meant no “Israel flags on the cup”. She said: “I don’t follow him . I don’t find myself agreeing with much of what he says.” Asked if his is a useful voice on the Palestinian cause, she said: “No. Anyone who ends up in that kind of position ends up moving things backwards.” It was not wanting to let go of the Lib Dem education brief and her determination to champion her constituents that led to her decision not to run for leader. “Those are now more important to me than being the leader of a political party” she said. “I would say don’t count me out next time, but don’t assume it either.” For now, she is more than happy to focus on the topic that brought her into politics in the first place and pledged to continue standing up against hate. “I will speak up for all minorities including the Jewish community if they find themselves under attack, which I’m sorry to say they have done horrifically in recent years.”

Afforestation, noun, a-for-ə-’stā-shən
Definition: the act of establishing a new forest When it comes to tackling climate change, nothing beats the humble tree. These woody sponges suck harmful carbon emissions out of the atmosphere and lock them away safely in their trunks. But what’s better than a tree? A whole forest of them! We would know. JNF UK has been planting them for a long time, helping to make Israel the only country to enter the 21st century with a net gain in trees. And while we’ve branched out into other areas – like education, welfare and culture – afforestation is still close to our heart. Our urban forests make towns and cities across the desert bloom. So if you’re looking for an answer that really gets to the root of the problem, take a leaf out of our book and plant some trees in Israel!

instances of antisemitism and stereotypes. Morris said: “We have been able to contextualise the depth of fear that antisemitism can elicit”, adding that there had been “an enormously positive response” to the exhibition. There had been “incredible interest” from nonJewish visitors, she added.
TV personality and children’s author David Walliams has said he’s “pleased and proud” to narrate Judith Kerr’s tale The Tiger Who Came to Tea for a new film out this Christmas. Kerr, who died in May aged 95, was born to a Jewish family in Berlin and fled to Britain from Nazi
Germany in 1936, aged 13. She began writing stories in the 1960s for her own children. Walliams said he “absolutely adored” Kerr and is “proud she wanted me to narrate” her classic. The cast of the animated film will include Benedict Cumberbatch and Paul Whitehouse.

themselves to cross the electoral threshold. Netanyahu’s rivals have been seeking to seize on the rare opportunity to unseat him by putting their differences aside. On the far-right, the nationalist-religious the Jewish Home party has linked up with Ayelet Shaked’s New Right in a bid to prevent nationalist votes going to waste. However, a bid the consolidate the grouping with the Kahanist Otzmah Yehudit failed due to a clash of egos. Barak’s new faction has so far failed to make much of a splash in the polls, and his own contribution seems only to be riling Netanyahu and his family. The joint list will be headed by Nitzan Horowitz, the newly elected, openly gay leader of Meretz. Shaffir, a rising star in Labour, bolted from the venerable party to be second on the new list, while Barak will be placed in the 10th slot. Israel’s four Arab political parties have announced a merger ahead of September elections, hoping to boost turnout among the minority, which makes up a fifth of Israel’s population. Ayman Odeh, head of the Hadash party, said that now that the parties have reunited as Joint List, they can address the “great challenge” facing the country’s Arab minority. The four factions first united in 2015, earning 13 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. But infighting later split the Joint List into two parties, which only won a combined 10 seats amid low Arab turnout in April’s election. Meanwhile, Israel’s religious right-wing parties have also decided to run under one ticket. The new grouping, made up of New Right, Habayit Hayehudi and the National Union, will run under the name United Right, headed by former justice minister Ayelet Shaked.
and Barak, Horowitz said the party aimed to “create significant political power the likes of which the left hasn’t seen in years”. The three leaders all spoke of “regime change” and ousting Netanyahu from office. With Labour announcing a joint run focused on social and economic issues with the small centrist Gesher party, Democratic Israel looks to have seized the mantle of peacemaking with the Palestinians and is poised to reintroduce an agenda that has long been missing from the Israeli political discourse.

A trio of forces on the Israeli left, including former prime minister Ehud Barak, have united ahead of the country’s looming elections, looking to pose a powerful contrast to Benjamin Netanyahu’s conservative ruling Likud Party. The newly-formed Democratic Union said in a joint statement it would be made up of Barak’s Democratic Israel faction, the dovish Meretz Party and former Labour Party MK Stav Shaffir. With the final lists for the September vote presented on Wednesday, all sides were concerned they might not get enough votes by

UN SINGLES OUT ISRAEL Six EU countries and Norway have voted at the UN in favour of resolutions singling out Israel for criticism as a violator of women’s and human rights. Israel was the only country named as a violator or trouble spot by the 54-nation UN Economic and Social Council during the session, according to the UN Watch organisation. Another resolution passed mentioned “social repercussions of the Israeli occupation” more generally. Only Canada and the US voted against the resolution. The United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Romania and Ukraine were among the nine nations that abstained. Nikki Haley, the previous US ambassador
to the UN, tweeted: “It amazes me how the U.N. condones votes like these. It is a total mockery of human rights to allow Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, and Yemen to name Israel as the world’s only violator of women’s rights. #Embarrassing.” Dutch politicians from six parties, including the ruling People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, submitted a parliamentary query with critical questions to the foreign ministry over the vote. “Do you consider this proportional?” they asked the ministry, which must reply next month. The council’s rotating president is currently the Norwegian UN ambassador.

OLMERT’S SWISS TRIP CANCELLED
ISRAEL ‘APPROVES MAN SHOT SEVERAL PALESTINIAN HOMES’ TIMES OUTSIDE SHUL
Ehud Olmert cancelled a trip to Switzerland after the former Israeli prime minister was warned that he would be arrested on suspicion of war crimes. Olmert had been scheduled to travel to Switzerland on Monday, but was warned over the weekend by Israeli defence and justice officials that he would be detained for questioning upon landing, Israel’s Channel 12 first reported last week. According to the report, Olmert at first said he would still travel to Switzerland, but backed down after the officials said his detention would cause great embarrassment to Israel.
Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved a plan to build 700 homes in Palestinian West Bank towns. It is the first Palestinian construction approved in the Israeli-controlled Area C since 2016, according to reports. Haaretz reported on Wednesday that 6,000 housing units in Israeli settlements also were also approved. Area C is under full Israeli control, based on the Oslo Accords. The plan was first reported by the Kan national broadcaster. It is not known if all of the homes are new units, or retroactive legalisations of homes built without permits.
A man was shot this week outside a synagogue in Miami, Florida. The victim was hit several times in the leg as he stood outside of the Young Israel of Greater Miami waiting for the daily mincha prayers to begin, according to reports. Police told local media that a man got out of a black Chevrolet Impala and opened fire, striking the victim, age 58, several times in the leg. The Yeshiva World News website identified the man as Yosef Noach ben Leah Tzivyah, the traditional manner in which prayers for someone’s health are recited.

British tourist detained for false tale of Israeli rapists A Cyprus court has postponed a custody hearing for a 19-year-old British woman, who faces a public nuisance charge after she admitted her accusation that 12 Israeli teenagers raped her at a popular resort was untrue. Paralimni court judge Tonia Antoniou ordered the postponement on Monday because the woman’s lawyer is abroad. A lawyer standing in for the Briton’s lawyer said more time was needed to pore through police evidence. A throng of foreign and local journalists surrounded the woman who covered her face with a sweater from the moment
she stepped out of the police vehicle that brought her to the courthouse. Cyprus police on Sunday freed the remaining seven of 12 Israeli suspects who were initially arrested on 17 July after the woman made the rape allegations. Five Israelis had been released three days earlier after no evidence against them was found. Police have said the woman voluntarily recanted her rape allegation during questioning. While admitting that there had been sexual contact with the suspects, she said she was not raped.

FRANCE LIFTS BAN ON ISRAELI FLAGS Authorities in France have rescinded a ban against Israeli football fans waving their country’s flag in the streets. The prohibition, which provoked vociferous criticism, came prior to a match in Strasbourg between Maccabi Haifa and RC Strasbourg. Hours before kick-off, the head of the Bas-Rhin district office lifted the ban. The decree, which cited the risk of antisemitic incidents, followed an incident in which Israeli fans got into an altercation with locals.
UN RESOLUTIONS SINGLE OUT ISRAEL Norway and six EU countries voted at the United Nations in favour of two resolutions that singled out Israel for criticism as a violator of women’s and human rights. Israel was the only country named on Tuesday as a violator or trouble spot by the 54-nation Economic and Social Council during the session, according to UN Watch. France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg and Malta joined China, Russia, Iran and Venezuela and 29 other nations in supporting a resolution that says “that the Israeli occupation remains a major obstacle for Palestinian women and girls with regard to the fulfilment of their rights”.

Streisand memoir to tackle antisemitism Barbra Streisand has been “writing a lot” about modern antisemitism in her memoir, which she has been working on. “It’s an extremely complex topic, and there’s not enough room in this interview to adequately cover it,” the singer said in an interview last week with the Chicago Tribune. “As [a] person who is proud of my Jewish heritage, it’s deeply concerning,” she continued. “Anti-
semitism is one of the most vexing, terrifying issues of our times. But this anger and hatred has actually been here for 3,500 years. It just reveals itself in different ways through the millennia.” Viking Books said in 2015 that Streisand’s memoir would be published in 2017. As of 2018, however, she had not produced a rough draft.
‘Overbearing’ mothers give vital lesson on rules Jewish mothers who put their foot down at home now have science on her side after a study showed that youngsters need to know who’s boss. In the study of 120 toddlers aged 17 months by researchers at the University of Illinois in the US and at Bar-Ilan in Ramat Gan, the toddlers expected leaders to step up when rules were broken. The toddlers watched a puppet show in which a parent bear gives a gift each to two
young bears but one grabs the other’s gift. In one scenario, the parent bear intervenes but in the second it does not. Scientists say the findings show that young children have a good understanding of social hierarchies and power dynamics. “Infants stared longer when the leader ignored the wrongdoing than when she rectified it,” said Prof Renee Baillargeon. “This suggests that infants expect the leader to intervene.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
Source of the threat If anyone is in any doubt about antisemitism trends, consider this: in all of 2015, the year after the last conflict in Gaza, there were 960 antisemitic incidents in total, while in just the first six months of this year, with no Middle East triggers, there were 892. Why the rise? Reporting is improving, but not by that much. Nor can the increase be put down to new information-sharing arrangements with the police, in place since at least 2015. As the CST itself says, the rise in numbers is mainly due to the huge increase in antisemitism reported online. To be logged as such, an online antisemitic incident in the UK does not need to be reported by the UK victim (a ‘witness’ will do) and does not need to emanate from the UK, but does need to target a UK individual. In the first six months of 2019, there were 323 online antisemitic incidents reported, which makes up 36 percent of the total. By comparison, in the whole of 2015, the CST recorded 185 online antisemitic incidents, which made up 19 percent of the total. In other words, the amount of online abuse recorded by the CST has grown almost fourfold in four years, and Jew hate perpetrated via social media has gone from less than a fifth of the total to more than a third. So when Jewish leaders ask ministers to press tech giants to do more to clamp down on antisemitism, it’s for good reason. Hatred migrates from the web to the streets. The suspect in the deadly Pittsburgh shul shooting last year is believed to have taken his cues from blogs and conspiracy sites. The CST is an enormous credit to the community it protects, and this week’s half-yearly report shows it knows exactly where the threats are coming from. What Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s new government plans do to about it remains to be seen. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF CHURCHILL It’s clear Boris Johnson sees himself as a kind of Churchill figure. As our new PM will know, Winston was supportive of the Balfour Declaration. He will also know that in 1921 he stood on Mount Scopus and told an audience of Jews: “The hope of your race for so many centuries will be
gradually realised here, not only for your own good but the good of all the world.” Once Boris gets us out of the EU, I suspect he will follow in his hero’s footsteps, travel to Israel in 2021, and stand on Mount Scopus 100 years after Churchill.

“Dude, I think we can do better than that!”
Judith Nemeth, in her opinion piece Teaching LGBT+ needs compromise on all sides, would have us believe “any child who has concerns about any aspect of their development will be dealt with sensitively”. Does Ms Nemeth honestly think we are naive enough to
believe that any child in an ultra-Orthodox framework who goes to one of his or her teachers with a problem or because they have been bullied because of their sexuality will be treated “appropriately and sensitively”?

Restore Janner’s name or Beech will have won JENNI FRAZER
T
he story of Carl Beech, the serial liar and predatory paedophile, would be repellent enough, were it not for the trail of misery he left behind him as he starts his 18-year prison sentence for perverting the course of justice and fraud. As is now well-known, Beech – using the useful pseudonym of “Nick” – made a series of lurid allegations against a number of highranking politicians, claiming they were part of a “VIP paedophile ring” whose activities included child murder and rape. His claims led to a long-running Metropolitan Police investigation, Operation Midland, opened in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal. But Operation Midland failed to find any evidence against those whom “Nick” accused, who included two Jewish parliamentarians, Lord Brittan and Lord Janner. Both men died in 2015 before their names could be cleared, Leon Brittan, a former
Conservative home secretary, and Greville Janner, a distinguished backbench Labour MP and community activist. It’s hard not to curl a lip as those who persistently peddled “Nick’s” fantasies — including, shamefully, Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson, and the investigative journalist Mark Watts — dig themselves deeper and deeper following Beech’s conviction. Watson, who sat and listened to Beech and his allegations and then raised the claims in Parliament, called Leon Brittan “as close to evil as any human being could get”. He did apologise to Diana, Lord Brittan’s widow. But it became clear during the trial that Beech himself had used almost the identical words about Brittan in an email. One can only speculate, therefore, as to where Watson happened across the description. Now Watson defends his position by saying the “purpose of the meeting was to reassure him [Beech] that the police had assured me they would take him seriously if he made allegations”. Mark Watts, meanwhile, from discredited
❝
RABBI LAURA SAID THE JEWISH COMMUNITY HAD BEEN ‘WONDERFUL’, BUT I’M NOT SO SURE news agency Exaro — maintained this week in Press Gazette that he had published Beech’s allegations in good faith and stood by the reports, adding that Exaro “never asserted” Beech’s claims were true “because it was not possible to judge one way or the other at that stage”. Oh, well, that’s OK then. Watson and Watts can sleep at night. Unlike, that is, the families of those accused whose names were made public and who, until Beech’s conviction last week, have gone through six years of hell. The Janner family – sisters Marion and Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, and their QC
brother Daniel – is a case in point. Beech claimed – and repeated in court – that Janner raped him in London’s Carlton Club. In fact, as Daniel Janner has repeatedly made clear, such an attack supposedly took place when his late father was in Australia. But this does not seem to have mattered to investigating police officers. In distressing post-trial interviews, Marion Janner said she had had to leave her home in London while Rabbi Laura, struggling to lead the Reform Movement and defend her father, said she had had suicidal thoughts. Rabbi Laura also said she thought the Jewish community had been “wonderful”, but I am not so sure. It seems fitting, now that Beech’s lies have been exposed in court, that the community which Greville Janner served so assiduously — as president of the Board of Deputies, as founder of the Holocaust Educational Trust and the Commonwealth Jewish Council — should do something to revive his good name. Otherwise, the repulsive “Nick” will have won.
A Charedi family is as unique as yours YEHUDIS FLETCHER AMBASSADOR, JEWISH ORTHODOX FEMINIST ALLIANCE UK
F
our and a half years ago, I stood on the witness stand and answered Jonathan Goldberg QC, as he defended now convicted and jailed sex offender Todros Grynhaus. The barrister asked if I was a member of the Charedi community, and I told him I wasn’t. I told him I wasn’t because, at that time, I didn’t realise that I still was. Of course I am Charedi. I tremble before God. I was brought up to do so. My values and ethics haven’t changed, just because my world view has broadened and I have made changes to the way I live. To me, being Charedi means belonging, either by birth or choice, to a community that believes in strict adherence to Jewish law, and values Jewish traditions even if they are not codified. I don’t conform to the stereotypes many people hold of Charedim, but that isn’t a reason to let anyone deny me my heritage. It’s true that for many in the Charedi community, conforming to specific standards is a key part of heir lives. Many will do this
consciously and reap the benefits of the sense of belonging that it brings. Others feel stifled or bored by the constant sameness, but are not prepared to pay for the price of being different. Others push boundaries, making slight changes bit by bit, trying out different ways of living. This conformity must not be taken for lack of individuality. Do not look at one Charedi family and assume you understand them, because you know another one. Do not look at one Charedi child and think they deserve less of an education than your child, less opportunities, less equality, less safety, because others group them together and say they are happy that way. Charedim are human like you. Some are
❝
THOUGH WE DRESS THE SAME WAY, WE DON’T NECESSARILY HAVE THE SAME OPINIONS
tall, some short. Some are introverted, some are extroverted. Some happy, some not. Some have aspirations, some challenge themselves to meet those aspirations and some will have their aspirations thwarted. You’d think I’m stating the obvious. Unfortunately, it needs to be said. On Facebook, scores of Shtisel fans post on a dedicated group. On a thread discussing the prohibition of women driving, a poster said: “We cannot be demeaning because these ladies do not feel condemned…” She felt able to speak to the feelings of every Charedi woman who is not allowed to drive. Recently, the journalist Rosa Doherty declared Charedi women to be the ultimate multi-taskers. Some are, Rosa, some aren’t. Can you imagine it being OK to say “Black women are the ultimate cooks/midwives/ insert low paid caring role here?” I took part in a question and answer session at a community event not long ago. An audience member on the front row said that her Charedi neighbours make her uncomfortable – they all wear the same clothes and she can’t tell them apart. A police officer admitted to me that in her dealings with Charedim “it’s hard to tell them apart because of all the beards and wigs”.
Just because people choose to — or are pressured to — dress the same way as each other, that doesn’t mean they have the same opinions as each other. Just because people tick the same box on a form does not mean they do not face individual risks and struggles, and have unique and valuable contributions to offer to society. It is too easy to cast an entire group of people as wanting one single thing, whether it is in terms of housing, education, or women’s rights. Who benefits from obscuring individuality? It’s not the individuals, I promise you. I know that the community can seem hard to access and gatekeepers zealously guard their posts. Statutory authorities are overburdened and are keen to accept a one-size-fits-all attitude to the thousands of people these gatekeepers say they represent. But just because something is difficult to achieve that doesn’t make it impossible, and all of us have a responsibility towards each other — kol yisrael areivim ze lazeh. I was born into a Charedi family and have been working within the Charedi community to make it a better, safer, more sustainable community for my children. I won’t stop investing in it, and I won’t go away.

Standing together for our common wealth CLIVE LAWTON CEO, COMMONWEALTH JEWISH COUNCIL
T
he recent Cricket World Cup turned into a nail-biter and now the Ashes is here. There’s been much discussion about the place of cricket in today’s Britain, but even if you’re not a fan, you probably know it’s still a big deal around the world, but only in certain places. And most of them are Commonwealth countries. As we now know – no I’m not going to mention Brexit! – Brits are a bit funny about international associations to which we belong. Many Brits know nothing and care less about the Commonwealth. Actually, the Commonwealth is a big deal, with 53 member states and rising. Although it originally emerged from our former colonies, other countries are now applying to join the Commonwealth of Nations. Those 53 countries span six continents and include a population of 2.4 billion, about a third of the world’s total. It includes
huge countries such as India (population 1.3 bn) and tiny – very vulnerable – ones like Tuvalu (population 11,000). The Queen is its titular head. About two-thirds of these countries have Jewish communities. The Commonwealth Jewish Council (CJC), founded in 1982, is the umbrella organisation connecting 37 communities. There are large Jewish populations in Canada, the UK, Australia and South Africa, and tiny communities meeting challenges of distance and disconnection. I’ve recently visited several of our members, meeting Jews and our many non-Jewish friends. In February this year, my Africa tour encompassed South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Mauritius, Uganda and Kenya. And there are remarkable stories and histories. The synagogue in Barbados, one of the oldest in the Western hemisphere, was visited by the Prince of Wales in March. He seems to like visiting Commonwealth synagogues, as he popped in to the shul in Cochin, India, in 2013 on his 65th birthday. The CJC supports this network of

IT’S IMPORTANT THAT JEWISH COMMUNITIES’ VOICES ARE HEARD Commonwealth Jewish communities. We share a menu of proven programmes many of which originated here in the UK such as Mitzvah Day and Limmud and imports, including the Shabbat Project. We also make representations on issues of concern such as antisemitism and security. The New Zealand mosque attack and the massacres in Sri Lanka’s churches show that our concerns are not unique, and it’s important that our Jewish communities’ voices are heard. In addition, we amplify the ethical Jewish voice. We are promoting a campaign on climate change, called “Small Islands: Big
Challenges”, which has been well received. (Jews especially should feel for those whose homes are threatened and who face the shock of impending forced migration.) And there’s lovely action from even the smallest communities. Gibraltarian Jews planted six etrog trees at their botanical gardens and the leadership of the tiny community in Mauritius has been responsible for planting thousands of trees. The Commonwealth is like the Jews. It has no economic or military power but its strength comes from its relationships. It’s all about making connections and helping each other. Last year, CJC became a fully accredited Commonwealth organisation, the first to be built around a religion and its community. The two huge Jewish communities of Israel and the US often overshadow our awareness of all the other communities in the world. But maybe a new accent on the Commonwealth here in the UK will lead us to look again at these fascinating outposts of Jewish life. When you travel, check them out. They’re family!
Can we find humour even in the Holocaust? JOE BOR COMEDIAN
T
his year at the Edinburgh Festival I’m doing a comedy show about my grandad escaping the Holocaust. I’m aware comedy and the Nazi genocide aren’t instant bed fellows so people have asked: ‘How is the Holocaust funny?’ Obviously it isn’t, but there is comedy in almost everything. I’m not the first to make comedy out of the tragedy. Many great Jewish comedians have. Mel Brooks, Jerry Seinfeld, Woody Allen and Jacky Mason all lampooned the Third Reich, in many ways. That is how we’ve coped. There is a problem that nowadays audiences are more prone to being offended and responding to buzzwords than understanding where a joke is directed and where it is coming from. When I talk about it on stage there is tension in the room that often comes from audiences not knowing whether they can laugh. I believe you can make a joke about the Holocaust as long as it’s not at the expense of
the victims. Audiences have expectations when they come to a show, often predicated on previous shows they’ve been to or stand up seen on TV. This is slightly different to what I am doing. Sometimes it can be a simple issue of structure. I can’t open a show by launching into talking about what happened to my grandad’s family. Stand up comedy is a conversation. You wouldn’t go up to someone you’ve just met and open with that. It has taken me a while to realise I could write this show. I couldn’t have written it
❝
PEOPLE GO TO A COMEDY SHOW TO LAUGH, BUT IT CAN DO SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT
when I was a new comedian. I have been doing stand up for 14 years and am used to performing in clubs and writing for a rowdy crowd, where the aim is to make the audience laugh and have a good time. But the great thing about the Edinburgh Festival is that when you have an hour, you can do more than that. I’m using old photos and letters which help, and looking at my grandad’s obsession with food, his language, appearance, behaviour and his relationships are all providing me with plenty of opportunity for comedy. My story is also a human one of friendship between him and his friend (actor Herbert Lom) who saved him. I’m out of my comfort zone. In the past, when I’ve written a comedy show, I’ve just put the routines and jokes that work the best on the circuit and attempt to attach a narrative or theme to them. This is different. I’ve always wanted to do something a bit more challenging and I’m sure there may be some that prefer a comedy show without a story or a theme which isn’t so heavy. But I am proud I’ve been able to make a show about something personal and meaningful and with
a story that will hopefully be impactful. I have already had a response from audiences after shows that I have never experienced, with people sharing their own stories and thoughts on the story. I’m glad it is starting a dialogue. Hopefully people find my show funny and interesting (at least one of the two). People go to comedy to laugh, but it can also do much more. There is also the pressure of doing justice to my grandad’s legacy (and the legacy of his friend Herbert), which is obviously a lot of pressure. I’d like to think my grandad would have enjoyed it too. He was a giggly man who had a love of laughter, despite everything he experienced in losing his family. Laughter is a powerful tool. At a time when we are experiencing a rise in antisemitism, it’s an important time to remember. I want my family’s story to live on. Help me do that by coming to the show. The Story of Walter and Herbert is at Underbelly, George Square (Wee Coo) Edinburgh from Aug 1-25. Joe is on stage at 4pm.

ver the past few years, we have begun to talk about topics we had kept silent about in the past; mental illness, child grooming, cancer, domestic violence. They feature in documentaries, on the radio, on the screen and in social media. But we prefer to see these events as happening in another country, another community. Not in our area, our community, our street. We’re prepared to look, but prefer not to see. Jewish News recently published an article about sexual abuse within an intimate relationship. It made for uncomfortable reading and many will have found it distressing. Yet sexual abuse in this situation is a fact. It is happening here and now, every day, in every community across the United Kingdom. We know that more than 16 percent of women and two percent of men suffer sexual
assault by their partners, but this is probably massively under reported; people in committed relationships, or marriage, find it difficult to admit that they’re suffering rape, or other forms of sexual violence. For many women, sexual abuse is taking place at the same time as other forms of domestic abuse, resulting not only in physical damage, but in posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and severe mental health problems. And because they feel that they have been betrayed by someone who professed to love

them and protect them, it can be difficult for them to trust in any future relationships. We know that perpetrators of domestic abuse will work to isolate their victim from sources of help and support, so that they lose confidence and self-esteem and when this is coupled with shame and guilt over what is happening to them, it takes immense courage for them to look for help and to speak out. If we ignore what may be happening in our midst, we are betraying them again. This is why those of us on the outside need to be aware of what may be happening within our community and to reach out to those who
may be suffering. This is why Jewish News was shining a spotlight on the harsh reality of sexual abuse within domestic violence. This is why Jewish Women’s Aid have acted robustly by setting up their Dina support service to reach out to survivors. By providing understanding and counselling, they enable women to regain confidence and self-esteem. We know that formal advocacy has enabled women to find justice for what they have suffered. This is an area where voluntary sectors with a cultural understanding can offer the long-term, flexible and holistic approach that survivors and their families need, so that they may regain confidence in themselves and the world around them. However uncomfortable and distressing it may be, we need to break the silence around sexual abuse within intimate relationships. We can’t leave it to somebody else. Rabbi Hillel the Elder is often misquoted, but the basic truths of his statement are for us to take on board: “If not me, who? If not now, when?”

4. MICHAEL KLINGER 1980- (AUSTRALIA)
A stylish batsman, whose prolific run-scoring, especially in one-day cricket, earned him the moniker “the Jewish Bradman”, Michael Klinger, was belatedly picked for a threematch T20 series for Australia against Sri Lanka, in which he was the leading runscorer. Earlier this year, he retired from the Australian Big Bash as the highest scorer in that competition. He is captaining Gloucestershire, as he has done for several years, in the T20 Blast this summer.
5. LOUIS JACOBSON 1918-2013 (IRELAND)
7. NETTA RHEINBERG
1911-2006 (ENGLAND) A batsman and first slip, Netta played for Gunnersby and Middlesex – and one Test match on the 1948-49 tour of Australia, thereby becoming the only Jew to play Test cricket for England. Unfortunately she was stumped for a duck in her first innings, and bowled first ball in the second! A respected administrator and cricket writer, in 1999 she became one of the first 10 honorary women members of the MCC.
A technically correct batsman – he learnt how to play cricket by reading coaching manuals – Dr Louis Jacobson won 12 caps for Ireland, scoring 101 not out against Scotland at Perth in 1950. Wisden noted that “Jacobson showed sound defence and determination in a lengthy innings which prevented a likely defeat”.

6. MIKE BARNARD
1960- (SOUTH AFRICA)
1933-2018 (ENGLAND)
Another specialist opener, Yachad scored 123 not out for South Africa against the rebel West Indies touring team – and 31 in an ODI against India. A natural sportsman, he also represented South Africa at field hockey.
3. ALI BACHER (captain ((captain) captain) captain) 1942- (SOUTH AFRICA)
At 21, Ali Bacher was the youngest to captain Transvaal, for whom he once scored 235 to defeat the touring Australians. In 1969-70, he led to an unprecedented 4-0 whitewash over Australia, probably the strongest-ever South African team. Dr Bacher went on to run the South African Cricket Board for a decade after South Africa’s readmission to international cricket in 1991.
A powerful batsman, Mike Barnard was a regular in the Hampshire team in the 1950s and 1960s, helping the county to its first Championship in 1961, and Mike Barnar scoring centuries against d the Pakistan, Australia and India touring teams. Barnard was a fine fielder, taking 313 catches 8. IVAN MORDECAI in BARROW 276 matches. 1911-1979 (WEST INDIES) Born in Jamaica to Sephardi parents, Barrow played 11 Tests for West Indies as a wicket-keeper batsman in the 1930s. His 105 against England at Old Trafford in 1933 was the first century by a West Indian in an overseas Test – and he remains the only Jew to have scored a Test century.
9. MAURICE MANASSEH
1943- (OXFORD AND MIDDLESEX) Born in Calcutta, Manasseh was a big-hitting middle order batsman and off-spinner. In the 1964 Varsity match at Lord’s he scored 45 and 100 not out, so enabling Oxford to avoid defeat. He went on to play for Middlesex.
10. ARTHUR COY
1902-1983 (EASTERN PROVINCE)
Julien Weiner
Born Arthur Cohen in Kent in 1902, he later converted to Christianity and changed his surname from Cohen to Coy. He went to live
in South Africa, captained Eastern Province before the Second World War – taking 77 wickets in first-class cricket with his leg breaks at the excellent average of 19.79.
11. NORMAN GORDON 1911-2014 (SOUTH AFRICA)
A medium-pace bowler, Norman Gordon took 5-103 and 2-59 in his first Test match, against England in 1938-39. With 20 wickets, he was the leading wicket-taker on either side in what was his only Test series. According to the England captain, Walter Hammond, he “showed himself a reliable fast right-hander, always attacking and very difficult indeed to knock on to the defensive”. The son of Russian immigrants, Gordon was the first openly Jewish cricketer to play for South Africa – and the first Test player to live to 100. • Zaki Cooper and Daniel Lightman QC are co-authors of ‘Cricket Grounds from the Air’ Norman Gor don with Bria n Lara

Review: Bon Jovi in Tel Aviv ON A HOT TEL AVIV NIGHT, MORE THAN 45,000 Still a legend: PEOPLE rocked out during the triumphant return Jon Bon Jovi of classic rock band Bon Jovi, following the band’s visit to Israel in 2015. When you can revisit the songs that made Slippery When Wet and New Jersey two of the best-selling albums of the 1980s, it’s never too soon. And having attended both shows, I can honestly say, to my surprise, that Thursday night exceeded my expectations. Produced by Live Nation Israel, the two-and-a half hour sold-out performance began with This House is Not for Sale. From the start, Jon Bon Jovi urged the crowd to clap, sing, and add our “na na”s during Born to Be My Baby. Two songs in, Jon said his first words: “Well, good evening, Tel Aviv. I told you we’d be back, we have lots of catching up to do, I’m not going to do a lot of talking.” If there’s one thing this region could use more of, it’s people who are happy to not do a lot of talking. Fans were treated to a longer set-list than in 2015 with a mix of newer songs from the 21st century and the classics that made Bon Jovi a staple of late ’80s/early ’90s MTV. We were impressed before the concert even began, remembering the band’s fantastic 2015 performance, during which Jon voiced his support and love for the country. It was reported that this time around, the band was sent more than 5,000 letters from BDS activists urging them to cancel the performance. Fortunately they were mailed through the Israeli postal service and never arrived. Bon Jovi clearly meant what he said, reminding the crowd that he dedicated We Don’t Run to the people of Israel in 2015. One of the audience favorites was the ballad Bed of Roses, during which Jon brought a woman out of the crowd to dance with, hug, and even kiss. Surely a moment she will never forget… along with the other woman who ran onto the stage just seconds later for a similar experience. Two dates in four minutes. Even for Tel Aviv, that’s crazy. But if you think it was only the women who were under Bon Jovi’s spell, think again. As the show drew to its conclusion, tens of thousands of people clapped and sang in unison Lay Your Hands on Me with a muscular, hairy arm emerging from the crowd to clasp hands with the lead singer. During Always I was surrounded by bald-headed men who, just years after doing who-knows-what in the army, were now telling the world that they would in fact “love you, bay-beeeeeehhhhh….. AAAAAAL-WAAAAAAYS.” The night’s energy climaxed with Bad Medicine, as the band kept going and going, even when the song seemed to be over. A few minutes later, they played their final song, the massive hit Livin’ on a Prayer. Jon may have struggled to hit the same high notes he sang 30 years ago, but I can’t imagine that anyone (Yiddish you need to know) cared. He gave us his all. The band members high-fived each other and hugged, bringing their travels to a close. And the word “LEGEND” on the back of Jon’s jacket said it all.

Deborah Cicurel checks out the rising trend of micro-hotels in New York City and discovers luxury doesn’t always come with a huge price tag
SMALL YOU EVER WISHED FOR!

here are few Inside a Queen destinations room at Moxy that evoke as Times Square much excitement, glamour and optimism. The City That Never Sleeps has long been a favourite of holidaymakers looking to pack in sightseeing, shopping, shows and socialising, and it’s only getting more popular with each passing year, with 2018 welcoming a record 65.2 million visitors. With a long weekend stretching before me and the lure of lastminute deals as tempting as ever, I decided to have a look online for cheap flights. An Expedia promotion and a few hours later, I was making my way to the airport. This time, I’d also try a new type of accommodation: micro-hotels, with last-minute stays booked at the Moxy Chelsea and the Moxy Times Square. I’d long heard about the Moxy’s concept and was intrigued. If you ask yourself what you really value in a hotel, chances are it’s not bulky furnishings such as cupboards, desks and minibars. Travellers want comfortable beds, hot showers, fast WiFi and somewhere they can pull out their laptop to fire off a few emails before heading out for some sightseeing. The Moxy concept is to create smaller rooms with all the amenities travellers really need, but to make their hotels a place of buzzing social activity. They also work exceptionally well in their surroundings. The buzzing Moxy Times Square fits in with its energetic location, while Moxy Chelsea, just by the Flower Market, has plenty of botanical design references and The lounge at even a flower shop in Moxy Times the entrance to make Square you feel right at home. I had the chance to catch up with Mitchell Hochberg, the Jewish president of hotel developer Lightstone, to find out a bit more about the concept. He says the Moxy brand is all about creating a “new type of lifestyle hotel that provides affordability without sacrificing style or comfort”, adding that travellers don’t want to spend time in their rooms and that social public spaces attract both visitors and locals. “Today’s travellers are cost-conscious, but with a higher level of discernment and greater expectations. They’re looking to satisfy their curiosity with unique experiences, not just find a place to sleep,” he says. “Beyond that, we’ve seen that hotels are no longer just a place for travellers – they’ve become the new public square,

social hubs inhabited as much by residents as by visitors.” This was certainly true: as I caught up with various friends and family who had either grown up in New York or moved there in recent years, each of them were keen to meet me at my hotel. They were also ideally located for ambling about: each day, I would set off for a walk around the area without a particular plan. From the Moxy Chelsea, I walked around 15 minutes to the High Line, a 1.5 mile-long stretch of abandoned railroad track that has now been converted into a verdant aerial park. The green space, that soars 30 feet above the city, not only gives you great views of the city’s skyline but is also full of quirky graffiti, food and drink sellers and eye-catching outdoor art installations. I also had the chance to check out the brand new Hudson Yards, a new development with more than 100 shops, restaurants and bars, as well as commercial and residential spaces, gardens, and even a school and hotel, that sits at the northern end of the High Line. One of the best ways to pack in as much as possible is with a New York Pass, which can be used on your smartphone and offers free access to more than 100 of New York’s top attractions. As well as the tried-and-tested, been-there-got-the-T-shirt sights, such as the Empire State Building, MoMA, the Statue of Liberty and the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, there are lots of off-thebeaten-track activities, such as a Secrets of Downtown walking tour and a Lower East Side Alternative Art Tour. One sight highly recommended is the Museum Chic: The lobby at of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Moxy Chelsea Holocaust. The moving exhibition “Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away.”, which is on until January 2020, brings together hundreds of original objects and photos in a fascinating and disturbing look at the death camp and its role in the Holocaust.

INGREDIENTS For the lemon dressing:
2. Peel and stone the ripe avocados. Place the avocados in a blender with the lemon juice, Tabasco, olive oil, coriander and a pinch of salt. Blend until the purée is smooth (you might need to add a little water if the avocados are not ripe enough).

3. Make sure the fillets of fish are clean and properly descaled before using. Season the fillets with salt. Sear the fish skin side down in a pan with a tablespoon of olive oil on a medium heat. Pinch of chilli powder Salt and pepper For the avocado purée: 2 ripe avocados ½ lemon, juiced 2 drops of Tabasco 2 tbsp olive oil

My husband is in charge of making the chicken soup in our house – and we all look forward to it. But there might be a new kid in town, as I’ve just been on the Best of Jewish Cooking class run by Cookery School at Little Portland Street. South African-born Rosalind Rathouse, who has worked as a professional cook, set up the school in 2003. Based just behind Oxford Circus, it runs around 40 classes in everything from vegetarian, Middle Eastern and Mexican to breads and baking. The nine dishes we made – challah, traditional chicken soup with kneidlach, aubergine in tomato sauce, green beans in tomato sauce, beef tsimmes, potato latkes with apple sauce and blintzes – are Rosalind’s own recipes, and reflect her mixed Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions. We plaited the challah, chopped veg, avoided overcrowding the pans, grated potatoes, shaped kneidlach and latkes and kept an eye on all the dishes. While most Jewish cooks might think their
recipes are best, we learnt many new touches and tricks. Rosalind includes saffron in her challah – and milk, to make it even fluffier. She uses onion oil and adds cinnamon to her kneidlach and cloves to the chicken soup. Overall, the three hours (which include eating what we’d prepared) were full on and flew by, while the recipes are all keepers and fairly straightforward. The school is not kosher, but it is concerned with sustainability and the environment. Cookery School at Little Portland Street: Best of Jewish Cooking is priced £125, www. cookeryschool.co.uk

Torah For Today
SEDRA Mattot-Masei
What does the Torah say about: Conspiracy theories
BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN The book of Bamidbar draws to a close with a bumper double sedra, the longest weekly Torah reading with 244 verses. These sedras are an appendix of sorts, or a form of bridge connecting the laws and stories of Bamidbar with Moses’ farewell speech of Devarim. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explains that after all the objective laws in the past two books, the Torah now empowers the individual to impose additional mitzvot upon him or herself. This section was specifically addressed to the heads of the tribes (called mattot). A matteh is a branch of a bigger whole and sees itself both as a distinct entity and part of the wider whole at the same time. The method by which the Torah allows individuals or even communities to create their own boundaries is through vows and other solemn promises. In Hebrew, davar means word as well as “thing”. This is because in Jewish thought and law, a word is real, it is actually a thing! The message here is clear – relationships and society are built on taking people at their word. A word ought to be a commitment, a badge of pride. We live in a world where words are cheap, where (if we can get there quick enough) we can delete social media posts and hope and that no one has read them yet (or worse still, taken a screenshot!). Especially during the days leading up to Tisha B’Av, let us realise the power of our words and use them to build rather than destroy, to draw close rather than to create distance.
Rabbi Jonny Roodyn is education director of Jewish Futures Trust
BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Fifty years ago last month, mankind landed on the moon – but some people suggest it was all a fabrication. What does the Torah say about conspiracy theories? Following the exodus from Egypt, 12 spies were sent to scout out the land of Israel, but 10 spread lies about the land, and about Moses and Aaron, saying they had conspired for their own glory to take control of the Israelites and were in fact endangering them. The 10 spies were leaders of Israel, and the impact was fatal to the early entry of the people to the Promised Land. Later, Korach, a cousin to Moses, alleged the same theories against Moses and Aaron. For this, Korach and his supporters perished. In the ninth century BCE, the false prophet Tzidkiyah ben Kena’ana accused

Arameans, offended Tzidkiyah, who slapped Michayhu across the face in indignation. Condemned as a liar, Michayhu was imprisoned during the battle as a security risk. However, his warning was right – Ahab did not return from the battle. An enemy arrow struck the king and Ahab subsequently died from his wound. In July 1969, Rabbi Alter, the Rebbe of the Gur Chassidic dynasty, first stated that a moon landing was not possible, as the Psalms declare: “The heavens are heavens for the Almighty,” implying that men cannot reach beyond the earth’s limits. Once the landing was confirmed, he did not suggest that the event was fabricated. The Lubavitcher Rebbe accepted the moon landing as fact and simply redefined the limits of earth as all created matter and heavens as the spiritual realm. The Bible Says What? ‘Even the children of traitors can be honoured’
Progressively Speaking We must condemn Trump’s ‘send them home’ sentiments
BY RABBI MARK GOLDSMITH In the Torah portion bearing his name in the Book of Numbers, Korach leads a rebellion against his cousins Moses and Aaron for the leadership of the Children of Israel. It goes badly for Korach and in a dramatic scene in Numbers Chapter 16, he and his followers are swallowed up by an earthquake, followed by a fire. That’s what happens to those who unfairly and self-servingly challenge the leadership of Moses. You would have expected Moses and Aaron to be broigus, to carry on holding a grudge against Korach’s family. Then, in the Torah portion Pinchas, in the middle of a list of all of the tribes of Israel ready to go into the Promised Land in Numbers Chapter 26, we hear that the children of Korach all survived to be part of the people to make the last part of the journey and settle the land. That’s not all. In the Book of Psalms we can see that the children of Korach remained part of the
whole priestly set up of the Temple, up there with all the other Levite clans, the broigus of previous generations presumably put aside. Their name is attached to a sequence of Psalms including Psalm 47, traditionally said before the Shofar is sounded on Rosh Hashanah, and Psalm 49, read in a house of mourning to this day. Moses and Aaron’s family, who held the High Preisthood, clearly did not hold a lasting grudge against Korach’s family, whose ancestral founder had directly challenged their leadership. As we begin the countdown towards a new Jewish year, we should consider whether we are keeping broiguses going, rejecting people because we resent what their parents or grandparents might have done. Moses and Aaron were able to let their broigus go. We can too.

BY RABBI DANNY RICH Recent wrangles between four congresswomen and Donald Trump, in which cries of “send her home” have been heard, are absurd, dangerous and inimical to the Jewish ideal of a single humanity under the sovereignty of a single God. The US president demeans his office by his regular foolish, ignorant and sometimes even misogynist and racist tweets, designed to appeal to the worst of human thought and behaviour. In this case, he is also distorting the notion of patriotism. Patriotism, by which I mean a commitment to, if not a love of, the country in which one was born or to which one was brought or where one has decided to reside, is a virtue and a Jewish duty. Based in the Biblical instruction of the prophet Jeremiah (29:7) “to seek the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you…”, rabbinic tradition evolve the concept of dina malchuta dina: the law of the land is the law.
The lived experience of Jews further demonstrates that, in addition to the minima required, Jewish communities have made major contributions to the societies among whom they have lived in virtually all aspects of human endeavour. The Jewish people began their historical existence in a single place, but primarily conquest — and occasionally choice — spread them throughout the countries and nations of the world. As our history has taught us that despite the contribution of Jews to the host society, and even when the Jewish community has been
invited by the local ruler, prejudice has often made it difficult for Jews to be welcomed as Jews and they have often fallen victim to suspicion, persecution and cries of “go back to where you have come from”. The earliest ancestor I know about arrived in England from Amsterdam in 1760. My four children, my two-month-old grandson and I were all born in London. Were it said to me “go home”, what could I reply other than, “I am home”? What is true of Jews is equally the case with others, and where a person lives may be an accident of birth, a choice of parents or previous generations, or the result of trauma including war, famine or natural disaster. That is why all Jews, and all democrats, should condemn sentiments such as Donald Trump’s in all circumstances. Danny Rich is Liberal Judaism’s Senior Rabbi

On occasion I have suggested changing insurer, which can result in the saving of hundreds, and sometimes, thousands of pounds. I have been able recently to reduce one client’s premium by £4,000 and another by over £2,000. It is important to note that it is not always sensible to change insurer where there may be ongoing claims or where the client wishes a particular condition to be covered. This is when an individual medical history is important. So, each year you can ask Patient Health to perform this exercise for you as we won’t charge you, as the insurers pay us to advise. So, yes, I can help you to reduce your premiums, and each year you should review your options, otherwise the insurers will charge you what they can. Please do give me a call.
Assessments include holistic physical, cognitive, psychological and medication reviews. The aim is to ensure that a nurse-led expert advice can be accessed whenever it is needed and we can also liaise with others in your regular medical team. Our service can provide risk assessments, frailty and delirium assessments with monitoring and guidance and support. We can also set up the provision of a care package if needed. These services have proved invaluable to families and clients with dementia and it has certainly gone a long way to preventing further ill health, additionally providing guidance and support that has been very important to them.
CARL WOOLF CRIMINAL DEFENCE SOLICITOR
NOBLE SOLICITORS Dear Carl My company has been the victim of fraud, but the police said they will not prosecute the person and have not given a reason. Can we do anything? Justin Dear Justin I’m sorry to hear this. There are a number of reasons why matters are not prosecuted. The police and the prosecu-
tion service are stretched and have to pick and choose which cases to pursue. That is obviously not fair. You want justice and the person who has stolen from you to be punished. There are two courses you can take with the assistance of a specialist criminal solicitor. The first is to seek a review of the decision not to prosecute using the procedures under the Victims’ Right to Review (VRR) statutory scheme. This enables those who are the victims of crime to seek a review of a decision by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) not to prosecute a case. An experienced solicitor can provide advice on the merits, or otherwise, of seeking such an independent review as well as preparing one. The second course of action
is to take advice on the merits of bringing a private prosecution through the criminal courts. These are prosecutions not brought by any statutory prosecuting authority, such as the CPS and any individual or any company can bring a private prosecution in the right circumstances. A private prosecution is usually quicker and the costs are likely to be lower than for civil litigation. In addition, unlike in civil litigation, a private prosecutor is not generally liable to pay a successful defendant’s costs and the court can order a private prosecutor’s proper and reasonable legal costs be paid, either by the accused or by the state, as well as making orders that would lead to the recovery of money stolen.
