As Spurs finally consults fans about binning the Y-word, citing Jewish News, here is our message to supporters who still think it’s ok...

You’re In Denial Tottenham Hotspur this week finally launched its fans’ consultation on the use of the Y-word, in a move applauded by community leaders. Spurs fans have traditionally self-identified using the Y-word in stadium chants sung as a badge of pride referencing the club’s Jewish

heritage – but many in the community oppose its use. The online survey was launched only days after Jewish News highlighted fans’ disappointment at the Premier League club’s failure to launch the consultation with only days before the start of the season, as it had promised to do.

But with the season starting this weekend, Spurs sent out an email asking supporters for their thoughts on a range of quotes from prominent figures and organisations, both for and against its use. It included an editorial from this newspaper calling for a crackdown on the “deeply offensive term of abuse”. Continued on page 6

News / Labour antisemitism

Secretary suspended The former secretary of Stroud Green Labour has been suspended within weeks of being elected after a poem expressing “love” for Hezbollah was exposed. Huseyin Abudharr Ali, who was elected by 36 votes to seven last month, has been suspended from his role and the party after online posts were uncovered, it is understood. A review of Ali’s blog found antisemitic references and a photograph of him standing next to a man holding up a Hezbollah flag. It is believed the photo was taken before Hezbollah was proscribed in its entirety in the UK earlier this year. Ali, who in 2017 described Jeremy Corbyn

as an “anti-imperialist and anti-racist”, is the secretary of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) Haringey Justice for Palestinians. Mark Gardner, director of communications at the Community Security Trust, described the material as “highly offensive”, adding that “it should have no place in Labour Party politics”. A poem titled I’m a Muslim published on his website in 2014 states: “I’m not a Sunni although I love Abu Bakr & Umar / And I’m not a Shia although I love Hezbollah.” A blog post from 2014 claims Israel is backed by “Hollywood”, describing it as “the

US’ main propaganda machine […] run by Zionists”, while another post, a year later, compares Israel to ISIS and claims similarities between the Jewish state and designated terrorist group. “If we’re serious then they are the same...,” it read. A Labour spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints of antisemitism extremely seriously, which are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken. ” A PSC spokesperson said the organisation condemns any manifestation of antisemitism. Ali has been approached for comment.

CORBYNISTAS ‘RADICALISED’ Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership has “radicalised” some Labour members into becoming “obsessed” by Israel, a report claims. Research by blogger David Collier, submitted to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, was published on Monday after a deep dive on thousands of social media accounts. According to the 200-page report, some party members who had exhibited little to no interest online in Israel became “obsessed” after Corbyn’s election. In one case, a person claiming to be a Labour member who had made no public statements on the conflict in 2014 grew to posting over 300 times on the subject last year, the report claims. The report claims to have identified a pattern of radicalisation, with some members joining pro-Labour Facebook groups and sharing conspiratorial material about Israel, and developing “hostility towards mainstream British Jewry… Loyalty to Labour and by extension Jeremy Corbyn saw many supporters dip their toes into anti-Israel ideology”. A Labour spokesperson said: “Some of these individuals are suspended and some are not Labour members… As the data we released shows, antisemitism complaints relate to a small minority of members, but one antisemite is one too many.”

Hate downplayed by 36 proLabour Twitter accounts Join Altermans Solicitors as a Consultant Over the last three years, six of us have joined Altermans as consultants – to work in property, company commercial, litigation, private client and family law. All of us have been partners elsewhere, and know the pain of running a team, hitting chargeable targets and driving revenue. However, each of us knew deep down that what we wanted to do was find somewhere where we could work for our clients in a friendly and supportive environment. We found it at Altermans in Finchley, North London. The firm is run by Gabriel Alterman, who is growing a business where lawyers can work on their own or build a small team that meets their needs. The firm is not a “virtual network”. We work together, talk together and respect each other’s expertise. We share fees, reward each other for referrals, and have regular gatherings – both social and work – to make sure we’re on track. If this sounds like a firm where you could find a niche and be at home, get in touch to arrange a chat and come and meet us. There’s no management-speak; just lawyers working together. You can contact Gabriel directly at gabriel@altermans.co.uk or by phone on 07794 085 617. Our website is at www.altermans.co.uk for more details of the firm.

Dozens of pro-Labour Twitter accounts are being used to downplay allegations of antisemitism in the party, researchers say. A report by the Community Security Trust (CST) identified 36 accounts it claims present allegations of antisemitism over the four-year crisis, as “exaggerated, weaponised, invented or blown out of proportion”. The research found that a third of the accounts posted antisemitic material, such as tropes relating to the Rothschild family and equivalences between Israel and Nazi Germany. All were connected to networks using hashtags to target public figures for speaking out against Jew-hate, such as #BoycottRachelRiley, #SackTomWatson and #ResignTomWatson. Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson (pictured) told The Observer: “This report points to a deeply troubling online culture where antisemitic narratives have been allowed to take root. I hope this intelligence is shared with the investigators at Labour HQ so they can explain to the dominant faction that control our party’s national executive how a small group of prolific social media users can influence our internal discussions if they are not called out or dealt with swiftly.” The popular account @SocialistVoice counts more than 67,000 followers. Account holder Scott Nelson was expelled from Labour over a number of tweets. Among the material flagged up was the claim super-

market chains Tesco and Marks and Spencer have “Jewish blood”. Another account, @Rachael_Swindon – with more than 71,000 followers – has referred to conspiracy theories relating to the Rothschild family, for which its holder has apologised. Labour’s liaison with the community, Heather Mendick, was among the 36 Twitter accounts identified, but she was not among the 12 accused of posting antisemitic material online. Her appointment came despite her claim antisemitism had been “weaponised” against the left, and her Twitter account, @helensclegel, was removed before the report’s publication. A Labour spokesperson said: “A small number of accounts are identified, some of which are not Labour members or supporters, and others have been expelled or suspended. The analysis does not look at pro-Labour social media as a whole, and therefore does not include the main Labour-supporting accounts that actively call out such bigotry. We stand in solidarity with Jewish communities, and are committed to rooting out antisemitism from our party and wider society.” Anti-racism campaigners HOPE Not Hate shared the report online, writing: “The findings of the @CST_UK report echo what we’ve found: antisemitism exists online among Labour supporters in different guises but there is a small hardcore group using and promoting antisemitic content, and it is poisonous. “While the hardcore is small, there is a larger group of users proactively trolling and smearing Jews who call antisemitism out, and there is a larger group still who engage in denialism and gaslighting.”

RAAB URGES ISRAEL: HALT Team GB’s golden games WEST BANK ANNEXATION Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has urged Israel to put a stop to an enormous settlement expansion in the West Bank, amid plans for thousands of new homes. It follows an announcement earlier this week by the Israeli Higher Planning Committee of the Civil Administration that the building of 2,304 new settlement housing units had been approved, just days after Israeli bulldozers razed 10 Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem. “We urge Israel to halt its settlement expansion, which is contrary

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab

to international law and promotes the effective annexation of the West Bank,” said Raab, in his first criticism of Israel as foreign secre-

tary in Boris Johnson’s cabinet. Israel also approved construction permits for 715 Palestinian units in Area C, but Whitehall said “much more needs to be done to fulfil the needs of the estimated 300,000 Palestinians there”. The UK is urging Israel to improve mechanisms that allow Palestinians to build in Area C, and has expressed “serious concern” following the demolition of Palestinian property by Israeli authorities, including in Wadi Hummus – in Area A, supposedly under Palestinian control– on 22 July.

Two Israeli women ‘detained over drugs’ Two Israeli women were flown back to Tel Aviv on Monday after being arrested at a London airport for allegedly carrying “large quantities” of drugs. The women, whom Jewish News has decided not to name, are both in their early 20s and were stopped by Border Force officers at Stansted Airport last Thursday. They were arrested, sent to Yarlswood detention centre and refused bail.

The Jewish Community Council (JCC) in London’s Stamford Hill helped to secure the women’s return to Israel and later said they had been “very lucky” not to have ended up in court. While the circumstances are still unclear, it is believed that the women had been promised a luxury London stay by a man in Israel if they delivered a package containing drugs, understood to be khat.

Orthodox leaders said the women, aged 20 and 22, were “incredibly naïve”. They warned others to check the contents of any packages they are given before flying, and to answer border guards’ questions honestly. JCC director Levi Shapiro said: “We were pleased to help, and in the end we had a good outcome, but this case serves as a warning not to take packages to bring to the UK without checking what it contains.”

More than 200 British athletes and managers have just returned from Budapest where they competed at the European Maccabi Games. British participants faced competition from 2,200 athletes in the weeklong event where they attended a special Shabbat service. The US delegation claimed the most medals, securing 155 in total, followed by Hungary and Germany. Team GB won 96 medals, including 44 gold, 30 silver and 22 bronze, across a range of sports such as fencing, swimming, golf and football. Tennis champion Alan Rechtman scooped three medals, including two gold, one silver and one bronze. “We are so proud to have such an experienced and respectful person in our Maccabi GB Family,” the team wrote on Facebook. Swimmer Chloe Jacobs brought back four gold medals for 50 butterfly

open swimming, 50 backstroke open swimming, 100 backstroke open swimming and 100 fly open swimming. In fencing, Oliver Strange and Ethan Zazo won between them 10 medals, including five gold medals, three silver and two bronze. “We have to say a special thank you to Richard Bernstein, the manager and coach, who has been there not only for his athletes but for anyone who needed!” the team wrote on Facebook.

News / Murder trial / Rape allegation

Mother ‘stabbed 86 times’ An Old Bailey jury has heard how an unemployed jeweller stabbed his Jewish girlfriend 86 times in a fit of rage at her Hendon apartment in March. Ian Levy, 55, killed mother-of-three Elize Stevens, 50, a welfare officer at the S&P Sephardi Community, shortly after being released from a psychiatric hospital. Police found the accused naked and covered in blood next to Stevens’ body at the flat, in Great North Way, Hendon, at 10.30am on 2 March. A blood-stained kitchen knife was lying next to her body, as was a hammer, which appears to have

Elize Stevens came to the UK in 2011

been unused in the attack. Witness Michael Harvey told how he heard Stevens begging Levy to stop, while officers said that in the imme-

diate aftermath of the killing, Levy complained to them he had hurt his hands in the attack, which was described as “a fit of unmodulated rage”. Upstairs neighbour Harvey called police at 10.20am after hearing Stevens shouting: “Ian, Ian stop it. Leave me alone or you’re going to kill me.” Levy’s lawyers do not deny he killed her, but argue it was manslaughter owing to his “diminished responsibility” as a result of a personality disorder and depression. Prosecutors, however, say the killing was “not simply reducible to the effects of a depressive disorder”.

Two expert psychiatrists have disagreed. The court heard how Stevens had raised her children in Israel before coming to the UK in 2011 to escape a violent relationship. She reportedly met Levy at her father’s shiva in 2018. Her grown-up children knew little about her relationship with Levy, whom Stevens appears to have been supporting. Police said that after his arrest, Levy said: “It’s the hospital’s fault; they let me out when they knew I was depressed,” before asking: “Did you save her?” Levy denies murder and the trial continues.

Lawyer for British woman in Ayia Napa ‘rape’ case quits

A lawyer representing a 19-year-old British woman who faces a public nuisance charge for falsely accusing 12 Israeli teenagers of rape has withdrawn from the case because of a “serious disagreement” with his client. Yesterday, Paralimni court judge Tonia Antoniou approved lawyer Andreas Pittadjis’ request to quit, and adjourned the case until 19 August to give the woman time to find a new lawyer. The judge ordered she remain in custody until her next court appearance. Pittadjis said his decision to resign

was made after consulting with the woman (pictured, centre) and her family, but would not disclose the nature of his disagreement. “I do not wish any longer to represent the defendant as I disagree with the line of defence,” he said after the hearing. “Once there is a disagreement, (lawyers) have an obligation towards the court, themselves and their clients to resign.” His resignation comes amid media reports that the woman claimed she was forced by Cypriot investigators to retract her original rape report.

PUSH FOR THE FLEXIBILITY THAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

A Cypriot law enforcement official denied the allegation, insisting she voluntarily admitted in writing to falsely accusing the Israelis – aged between 15 and 18 – who have returned to Israel.

Pittadjis said his decision to quit should not be linked to how the woman would plead. “Please do not interpret my resignation as whether she had to plead guilty or not guilty or anything, as this will be prejudicial to her defence and unfair to her as well,” he said. The state-run Cyprus News Agency reported the British woman’s mother, who attended the hearing, said she trusts the Cypriot justice system and that she would hire a replacement lawyer for her daughter, whom she has visited at the police detention facility “almost daily”.

NEWS IN BRIEF

SENTENCE REDUCED An abuser who targeted boys at a now-closed Jewish boarding school has had his 19-year sentence halved. Trevor Bolton, a housemaster who preyed on the homesick and the vulnerable at Carmel College, was found guilty of 25 counts of abusing eight boys aged 11 to 15 between 1968 and 1988. The Oxfordshire college closed in 1997. Bolton was sentenced in 2016, aged 78, after a jury found him guilty of indecent assault and indecency with a child, having heard how he lived in a flat above the boys’ dormitories and groomed his victims using chocolates, cigarettes and TV. But the Court of Appeal has now reduced his sentence to nine years and upheld an appeal against six counts of serious offences against one witness.

Anti-hate awards / Menopause breakthrough / News

Hate-crime fighters are to be honoured in London A Jewish News-backed national award scheme honouring those who stand up to all forms of hate this week called for nominations. The No2h8crime Awards, which was created by a Muslim anti-hate crime activist with help from a Jewish counterpart, allow anyone to nominate people who stand up to prejudice, with 10 Upstander Awards available. Past Jewish winners include former Labour MP Luciana Berger and Senior Masorti Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, who was jointly honoured with Imam Mamadou Bocoum for interfaith work. Earlier this year, six-time Olympian Tessa Sanderson signed up as a patron of the Awards, for which Jewish News is media partner alongside the Mirror, saying she was “proud of anyone who has taken a stance against intolerance and hatred”. This year’s categories include Upstanders in the media, community, parliament, local authorities, law en-

forcement, business, social research, and sports with special categories for young Upstanders and lifetime achievement award. In addition, two special awards will be named after murdered Labour MP Jo Cox and the Muslim hate-crime monitoring organisation Tell MAMA, whose founder Fiyaz Mughal (pictured left) also founded No2H8. “Four years have passed since I initially set up the Awards and we have seen the impacts of hate crimes in our newspapers on a regular basis,”

Mughal told Jewish News. “The world is changing, but we must never allow those who seek to divide, to spread their poison into communities. The Awards celebrate those men, women and children who in their guts and their souls, know that hate is a poison that needs to be challenged, and they do so voluntarily and with a moral desire for good.” Awards chair Richard Benson, a ex-chief executive of the Community Security Trust, helped Mughal set up the Awards and said they were going “from strength to strength… This year will again see more than 350 people gather together from various communities and from police forces, the Government, as well as those people who are nominated for an award.” He added: “More than ever, with hate crime rising across the various strands, it is imperative that we energise, honour and place tackling hate at the forefront of our minds.” Those who want to nominate someone for an award have until 31 August to do so, via the No2h8 website, with winners announced in Central London location in November.

A world-renowned Liverpudlian Jewish scientist has developed a medical procedure that can delay the onset of menopause in women for up to 20 years. The surgery is ground-breaking and cause for hope for millions of women whose menopause symptoms range from low mood, anxiety and difficulty sleeping, to hot flushes, night sweats and a reduced sex drive. Professor Simon Fishel, who was head boy at King David High School in Liverpool before moving to Nottingham, is a fertility expert bestknown as one of the pioneers of IVF. He has been at the top of his field for almost 40 years. This week, he explained how a new 30-minute operation for women aged up to 40, performed by keyhole surgery and costing up to £11,000, can delay menopause symptoms for up to 20 years, depending on their age at the time of surgery. Fishel founded the CARE Fertility group of clinics, but introduced the surgery through his firm ProFam, set up to help women store ovarian tissue “to delay the menopause and preserve their fertility at the same time”.

Yo u r l i n k t o a w o r l d o f t r a v e l

He said: “For the first time in human history, women will be living as long in the menopausal state as the pre-menopausal state, if not longer, and millions suffer from a whole range of medical problems related to being in the menopause.” The NHS spends millions of pounds a year on problems related to the menopause, such as osteoporosis and some heart conditions. The surgery involves taking a small piece of ovarian tissue before slicing it up and cryo-storing it. When the woman enters the menopause, the frozen tissue is thawed out and grafted back into the body. However, Richard Anderson of the Centre for Reproductive Health at Edinburgh University said he had been performing ovarian tissue freezing for young girls and women for 25 years. He added it was “old news” that the transplants could restore hormone levels, adding: “What is less clear is whether this is a safe and efficient.” Fishel supports Bonei Olam, which funds fertility treatment for Jewish couples struggling to conceive.

Mrs Rabinovitch is particularly concerned for her husband’s welfare, as he has suffered posttraumatic stress disorder since the stillbirth of their child in 2012. His family, who are members of Liberal Synagogue Elstree, reported him missing early on Tuesday and police were initially able to trace his phone to the Uxbridge area. However, the signal is no longer detectable, either because the phone been switched off or the battery has died. Speaking to Jewish News, Mrs Rabinovitch, who has a son aged six and an 11-year-old daughter, said: “He needs to seek help, but I think he’s scared to. There’s no note. He’s just gone. CANARY FORCED TO ‘DOWNSIZE’ A hard-left news site has been forced to downsize after anti fake-news activists encouraged advertisers to blacklist it. The Canary informed users its existing system “no longer works” and it will now be moving temporarily to a new business model. It comes after activists from the group ‘Stop Funding Fake News’ (SFFN) wrote to advertisers, urging them to stop funding the site. SFFN had success in March when Macmillan Cancer Care pulled advertising, followed by Ted Baker, WWF and Moonpig. The Canary said its former model meant “relying on social media to drive traffic, which generates advertising revenue… Facebook and Google changed their algorithms, meaning fewer people see our articles. And people who don’t like our politics have encouraged our advertisers to blacklist us”. It claims it had been “smeared with accusations of antisemitism by those who’ve weaponised the term for political ends”, but that it is simply “against the actions” of Israel. It added: “In the current post-truth political landscape, accusations stick – despite facts to the contrary. That means advertisers are susceptible to pressure from political Zionists, and our advertising revenue is under fire.” SFFN told Press Gazette: “It’s good news for our democracy that the clickbait business model of ad-funded misinformation no longer works.”

Board of Deputies welcomes Spurs’ Y-word consultation Continued from page 1 Board of Deputies’ vice-president Amanda Bowman said: “We welcome this consultation. The continued use of the Y-word by fans, whatever their intentions, works against efforts to eradicate anti-Jewish racism from football.” The Community Security Trust (CST) said: “We hope something constructive comes out of this process.” Registered Tottenham fans are being asked whether they find the term offensive or inappropriate, whether they know others consider it racist, and to what extent they agree with commentators’ views. Among the excerpts shared in the survey are those by columnists Daniel Finkelstein, David Aaronovitch and Martin Samuel, as well as CST deputy

Tottenham fans wave a flag with the Y-word

communications director Dave Rich, who said Spurs fans’ use of the Y-word did not excuse the antisemitic abuse levelled at them by rivals. But, he claimed, “ultimately ridding football of antisemitism has to involve Spurs fans finding another way to express their identity”. Many Jewish Spurs fans stand strongly by its continued usage, which the club recognised in its survey preface, saying there was “a broad spectrum of debate across Jewish

and non-Jewish communities”. Mike Leigh, who produces the Spurs Show Podcast, said: “Spurs fans chant it in a celebratory way while rival fans have always used it in a derogatory way… British Jewry has far bigger things to worry about.” Action Against Discrimination chair Jonathan Metliss said: “We are encouraged by Spurs raising the issue, but believe it is obviating its responsibility by not banning the use of the ‘Y-word’... by Spurs fans.”

VOICE OF JEWISH NEWS IN SPURS’ SURVEY

“The term is perversely worn as a badge of honour by Spurs’ self-styled, almost entirely non-Jewish ‘Yid Army’, while the overwhelming majority of Jewish football supporters – and indeed this newspaper – see the Y-word for what it is and always has been – a deeply

offensive term of abuse. Jewish Tottenham fans are broadly to blame for its continued use. Their hearts rule their heads when they nonchalantly indulge a vicious slur against them out of loyalty to a sports team. When Jews hear the word ‘Yid’, or see it daubed

on desecrated synagogues and gravestones, they are unequivocally responsible for standing proudly against, not for, it. Racism will never be eradicated. But treating this foul word with the contempt it deserves is a small step in the right direction.

Justin Welby wrote to Westminster Council, as did the UK’s most senior Catholic, Jewish and Muslim figures, including Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Senior Imam Qari Muhammad Asim, chair of the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board. Welby said: “Memory comes from experience and education. Experience is deepened by symbolism. The symbolism of this centre, right next to the home of our democracy, is profound and hugely powerful.” He added: “I believe it will add significantly to the status of the City of Westminster as a place of government that is a world model.” The faith leaders’ intervention

follows high-level support from the Government, including new Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick MP. He said: “It is right that this country’s faith leaders have united behind our plans to build a Holocaust Memorial and Education Centre in the shadow of Parliament.” He added the project was “a priority for the government and our prime minister”, and said he was “determined to see it delivered”. In a letter to Westminster Council, Cardinal Nichols, Chief Rabbi Mirvis and Imam Qari Asim backed the proposal, saying they are “deeply saddened by the rise of outspoken intolerance, racism and hate crimes”. They added that the memorial proposal “sends a strong and unequivocal message to all people that Britain must be a country committed to supporting tolerance”.

Elsewhere, a letter from The Holocaust Education Trust outlined the importance of a national memorial “standing as a permanent reminder to those in public office of their responsibility in confronting hate.” The proposed location was first mooted during David Cameron’s premiership, and is supported by former prime ministers and the Opposition, but the final say lies with Westminster Council. Revised plans were submitted to the council earlier this year following opposition from residents and Royal Parks, which manages the Grade-II listed green space alongside the River Thames. It pointed to environmental concerns and a “significant harmful impact,” not least to the roots of the ancient trees lining the space. A decision on the planning application is expected next month.

Community raises £12,700 for flooded mikveh More than £12,7000 was raised in two days to repair a flood-damaged mikveh in Greater Manchester by a crowdfunding campaign. The religious bath in Cheadle, which is run by Chabad, was hit by a month’s rain in 24 hours, causing the nearby Micker Brook to burst its banks. The mikveh was extensively damaged, while the Chabad House was partially flooded. Homeowners were rescued by boat, cars were stranded, roads were closed and train services cancelled as unprecedented summer rainfall hit south Manchester and Cheshire. Rabbi Peretz and Rebbetzin Chavi Chein, who have run Chabad in Cheadle for more than 20 years, said this week that the state-of-theart mikveh had “become a central point in the local community, with many other rabbis and rebbetzins from across the spectrum using, promoting and hosting events with it”. The damage has meant that the family has had to move out of Chabad House temporarily and the couple were described as “devastated”

that the mikveh was flooded, but “determined to get it back up and running as soon as possible”. A fundraising target of £180,000 was set and the couple are raising money through the GoFundMe website, posting pictures of the damage. Among the donors so far is local lawyer Nick Freeman, known as “Mr Loophole”, who is known for helping celebrities win appeals against driving penalties. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/ save-our-mikveh-and-chabad-house

Refugee, 90, to skydive for charity A 90-year-old Kindertransport refugee is set to skydive from 13,000ft in Brackley later this month to raise thousands of pounds for Jewish Care, writes Mathilde Frot. Eli Abt, a retired architect and planner from Finchley, hopes to raise £6,895 for the health and social care charity at the Hinton Skydiving Centre on 25 August. The crowdfunding target seeks to celebrate four milestones: Abt and his wife Muriel’s 60th wedding anniversary, 80 years since he boarded the Kindertransport, his 90th birthday and 50 years since he

opened his architecture firm. “I’d been wanting to [skydive] for quite a long time,” he said. “I am confident. This is a wonderful way of raising

money for Jewish Care.” Abt said it is more important than ever to donate to community groups. “At a time of great political and economic insta-

bility in this country, we don’t know what pressures there will be on the Jewish community so this is the right time to give.” Abt was nine when he escaped on the Kindertransport. “That’s when I said goodbye to my parents in Berlin,” he said. His father was able to escape, and they were reunited with Abt’s mother and brother in Brighton in September 1939.  To donate to Abt’s campaign, visit JustGiving, or donate directly to Jewish Care by post to 221 Golders Green Road, London NW11 9DQ, citing ‘EA Skydive’.

Dutch rail firm opens Shoah compensation scheme Applications have opened for compensation claims from the Dutch state-run rail operator for its involvement in the Shoah. During the Second World War, the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen, or NS), operated trains on behalf of the occupying forces. NS provided Nazi high command with both trains and a timetable for transporting Jews to and from transit camps in the Netherlands, including Westerbork, Vught

and Amersfoort. From here, they were put on trains to concentration and extermination camps across Europe. The company said it had “paid a great deal of attention to collectively commemorating, honouring and learning from the suffering inflicted on so many during this period”, but has never offered financial compensation until now. In November, NS chief executive Roger van Boxtel set up a committee to look at

how individual compensation could be provided for survivors and next of kin of those who were transported by NS, to be taken to concentration or extermination camps. He did so after speaking to Holocaust survivor Salo Muller, whose parents both died in the camps. On Monday, NS opened its compensation application period, which will now be open for one year, saying: “This is a dark chapter in our history.”

TRIBUTES PAID TO EDITOR

Tributes have been paid to Geoffrey Paul, a former editor of The Jewish Chronicle who was made an OBE for services to journalism and has died aged 90, writes Jenni Frazer. Liverpool-born Paul started life as Geoffrey David Goldstein, but changed his name when he became a full-time journalist. He could be said to have edited The Jewish Chronicle in its “glory years” – 1977 to 1990 – when it had little or no competition and a huge circulation. Former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, who attended his funeral on Monday at Bushey New Cemetery, said: “Geoffrey Paul was one of Anglo-Jewry’s finest editors, with a sharp mind, a deeply moral set of commitments, a devoted love of Judaism, a strong sense of humour and unfailing humanity.” Speaking at the funeral, Rabbi Harvey Belovski, minister of Golders Green Synagogue, said Sacks had once advised him that every rabbi needed a wise person to consult. Paul was the “wise ear” for Belovski, who admitted he

had once been so furious about something he was ready to take a dramatic step. Geoffrey Paul “strongly advised” against such a step, he told the mourners, adding that had he proceeded in his action, “I would not be standing here today.” After working on provincial papers, Paul moved to London and worked for Jewish outlets, including the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and The Jewish Observer, before joining The Jewish Chronicle and rising through the ranks until he became foreign editor. Marie van der Zyl, president of the Board of Deputies, said: “Geoffrey Paul upheld the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in his work and will be missed by all who knew him.”

Abuser ‘called family dirty Jews’ in St Albans Hertfordshire Constabulary is investigating reports that a man called a family “dirty Jews” and shoved their pram outside a café in St Albans on Sunday. The offender walked past the family by Costa Coffee, in St Peter’s Street, at around 2.15pm and allegedly shoved a pram, which the 30-year-old victim’s nephew was in, police said. A video filmed by the victim appears to show a man wearing an orange T-shirt and trousers call the family “dirty Jews” and kick an advertising board towards them. “At that point, I took out my phone and started filming and asked him to repeat it, which he did,” the victim told The Independent. In the video, the voice of a relative can be heard instructing the child not to “listen to this nasty man”. The victim, known as Michael, said he wears a kippah and claimed the incident took place while he was out with his in-laws and a baby. “It was a bit of a shock [and] completely unprovoked. It was very upsetting and distressing,” he said.

The man in the orange T-shirt allegedly called a family ‘dirty Jews’

“Obviously this comes at a time of rising antisemitism in the UK. It’s very uncomfortable.” Michael told the newspaper he felt the spike in hate crimes was connected to the antisemitism crisis in the Labour Party. “We all know there is antisemitism in one of the largest political parties in the UK, and when it is not tackled properly, it means that people on the street sometimes think they can get away with it,” he said. The suspect told The Daily Mail

he was provoked by the family and said: ‘I really regret it ever happening... I may have lost my job over it and I would love to apologise to the family. I don’t hate Jews at all.’ A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: “Victims of hate crime can be reassured that they will be taken seriously and treated with sensitivity.” Witnesses and anyone with information should contact the nonemergency number 101, quoting crime reference 41/70651/19.

OFSTED PRAISE FOR NURSERY Gilah Nursery School in Borehamwood has seen its Ofsted rating jump from “good” to “outstanding”. The Orthodox Jewish nursery, inspected on 2 July, has been rated “outstanding” across all categories. “Staff thoroughly support children to solve minor disputes, modelling calm and positive behaviour. Children learn to have the utmost respect for each other,” inspectors said. Ofsted praised the support given to children, including those with special educational needs, and the understanding of children’s safety. Managers also “carefully” analyse children’s pro-

gress to quickly identify any gaps in learning, the report said. “Staff have undertaken much professional development, including individual and whole group training. This has strengthened their skills in promoting the concentration and engagement of all children,” it read. Rochelle Miller, of the nursery’s board of governors, said: “The governors and headteacher are delighted with the report and commend all the staff on the rating. It is a culmination of all the hard work by the staff and we look forward to Gilah going from strength to strength with Georgina Lesser as its new head…”

Ellman replaces Ryan at LFI Dame Louise Ellman is to replace Joan Ryan as the chair of Labour Friends of Israel (LFI). The Liverpool Riverside politician will take over at the pro-Israel group, with the outgoing chair taking on the role of honorary president. This comes after Joan Ryan defected from Labour to join Change UK – Independent Group in February, citing the party’s mishandling of antisemitism. Paying tribute, Ell-

man said: “Ryan has been a tremendous and inspiring chair of LFI over the past four years” and that they will both continue “to stand up for Israel, fight anti-Zionism in all its ugly forms, and support a two-state solution, peace and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians”. After quitting Labour, Ryan spoke at the Aipac conference in Washington, DC, lashing out at Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, saying his party “seeks to demonise and delegitimise Israel”.

United in celebrating teens’ coming of age don’t forget me And don’t forget to leave a gift to World Jewish Relief in your Will British and Ethiopian-Israeli youngsters rejoice together

Ten British families travelled to Israel last week through UJIA’s Ethiopian Bar/Bat Mitzvah Programme (EBBM) to celebrate the bnei mitzvot of 23 Ethiopian-Israelis. The visit ends a year-long programme that twins a British Jewish child approaching their bar or batmitzvah with a child their own age from the Ethiopian Israeli community of Kiryat Bialik in the Haifa district. Participants learn what it means to become a Jewish adult through the prism of the Ethiopian Jewish story, which covers the heroic rescue mission in Sudan in the 1980s, when Israelis set up a fake luxury beach resort to smuggle out Ethiopian Jews, to last month’s mass protests after police shot an Ethiopian teenager. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Ethiopian Jews began arriving, the town already had a 60-year history of welcoming Jewish immigrants from countries such as Yemen, Egypt, Iraq, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, the USSR, India, Tunisia and Morocco. The challenges facing Ethiopian Israelis have been in the spotlight recently… This programme has never been more important.”

ENVOY’S AIRPORT Candidates sign ‘HUMILIATION’ pledge to Bibi Israel’s ambassador to Panama has said he was “humiliated” and “treated like a suspect” at Ben-Gurion Airport because he is from the Druze minority. In a Facebook post, Reda Mansour (pictured) said the airport could “go to hell”, prompting a flurry of apologetic phone calls, including from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Security guards, who defended their actions, pulled over Mansour after he said he and his family came from the Druze-majority village of Isfiya on Mount Carmel in northern Israel. The airport said checks were performed “regardless of race, religion, and sex”. Mansour has fought in the Israel Defence Forces and held senior positions at Israel’s foreign ministry. President Reuven Rivlin also apologised to Mansour, saying an investigation was underway.

The top 40 candidates on Likud’s candidates list have signed a pledge that they support Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (pictured) to form the next government and will not try to replace him. The petition reads: “We the undersigned candidates on the Likud list for the 22nd Knesset emphasise that we will not receive any dictation from any other party. Without regard to the results of the election, Netanyahu is the Likud’s only candidate for prime minister, and there will be no other candidate.” The statement added: “[Yair] Lapid and [Benny] Gantz (leaders of the Blue & White Party), who work against one another, and the Labor party members who replace their leaders every two weeks, can only envy the Likud members who back their party chairman...” The petition reportedly was initiated after Yisrael Beiteinu party head Avigdor Liberman said in an interview that he wants a different Likud candidate to be named prime minister, and recommended Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, Ynet reported.

Special Report / Buchenwald

‘My wife’s grandpa was one of the lucky ones’ Justin Cohen accompanies former Cabinet minister James Brokenshire to Buchenwald concentration camp, where he discovers his family’s experiences during the Holocaust Staring at the haunting photograph of rows upon rows of Jewish men lined up as far as the eye can see at the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1938, MP James Brokenshire is struggling for words. A series of obvious but unanswerable questions fill the eerie silence, as he and his family stand at the memorial site in Germany that was once a central cog in the Nazi network of death: which of those pictured were among the 56,000 men, women and children murdered here? What

became of them? If they did get out, what horrors did they have to endure? For the former Communities Secretary, his wife Cathy and her parents, Michael and Janet Mamelok, there was an additional question: was a member of their own family among the faces of newly-arrived prisoners in the days after Kristallnacht, the pogrom of 9-10 November 1938 when 30,000 Jews were rounded up and shops and synagogues smashed up? Brokenshire’s visit to Buchenwald near Weimar last month was part of his former department’s work on a planned new £100 million Holocaust memorial and learning centre in Westminster – but it was also the latest stop in an intensely personal journey since details emerged of the internment of his own wife’s grandfather, Artur Mamelok. “Artur was one of the lucky ones,” said the former Cabinet minister, reflecting on the fact that more than 270,000 Jews, Roma, disabled and political prisoners were forced into this hell on earth. “He was able to get to England and have

He begun chanting Hatikvah, the song translated as ‘The Hope’ recited by prisoners at the entrance to the Auschwitz gas chambers that would later become Israel’s national anthem, but was overcome by emotion. Brokenshire went to comfort him. For the man who in government played a leading role in Britain’s efforts to counter hate, it underscored the Holocaust’s lasting impact, but also the need to keep alive the memory to realise the words of the psalm laid out in large lettering at the site: “So that the generation to come might know the children, yet to be born, that they too may rise and declare to their children.” Crouching by the lettering, he said: “We have a duty to carry that message forward. It’s so important to share the family story I’ve become part of. If we forget, we risk making the terrible mistakes of the past all over again.”  An edited version of this article was originally published in The Sunday Telegraph.

Do you remember 9/11? The thoughts, the feelings, the shock as we watched aghast as those huge buildings came tumbling down, one after another. I asked around at the time. There was an outpouring not only of anger and frustration, but also the realisation that in those real life moments universally people seem only to consider family, friends, life’s purpose and meaning. The small, the petty, the transient all fall away. There was a palpable movement towards doing good, making right, fixing wrong, making the world a better place for all. However, perhaps the aspiration was too large and unwieldy to be practical; perhaps it fizzled out because it is so much easier to break down than to build up. This week we connect once again with that which is broken, fallen, shattered, fractured, dispersed and divided. Another 9th of Av at which time we yearn to fix, to build, to unite, to bring together that which should be the collective dreams, aspirations and yearning of the Jewish People. Yet our dreams and worthy intentions are constantly frustrated due to our own tendency to criticise, to pick apart, to point out the bad, in place of looking for the good. Yerushalayim contains within it the word “yira” to see. There are endless references and nuances of language deployed in Tanach that connect Yerushalayim with subtleties of sight. Our generation is the first in 2000 years to see Yerushalayim being rebuilt. We must nurture the collective insight to internalise and act upon the understanding that “seeing is believing” This can only happen if we consciously make the effort to look, to see and to focus upon the good in one another. The 18th century Chassidic Master - the Noam Elimelech from Lizhensk authored a famous prayer which concludes enduring “THAT EACH OF US MAY SEE THE VIRTUES OF ONE ANOTHER, NOT THE DEFICIENCIES....” This is aptly portrayed by this simple play on an “eye test” which depicts this message for us in Hebrew. Please cut it out, put it up on the kitchen wall and let each of us try our best to nurture in ourselves an “ayin tova” a good eye; eyes that look for the good in one another. Brick by brick let us thereby build that which was lost and finally achieve our collective dreams of the millennia. World News / Mass shootings / Educational project / Tradition challenge / Magazine criticised

‘Thoughts and prayers are not enough’ American Jewish leaders have expressed “shock and heartbreak” after the killing of nearly 30 people in two mass shootings, with some of the leadership making forthright calls for gun control. In a statement, leaders of the Jewish Federation of Greater El Paso, Texas, said their “hearts and our profound condolences go out to the families of those who have lost their lives and we pray for a quick recovery of those injured”. Federation leaders said they were “shocked and heartbroken that the irrational and devastating plague of violence sweeping this country has arrived at the door of our traditionally peaceful and congenial homes”, and praised emergency services for their “quick and decisive response”. On Saturday, alleged shooter Patrick Wood Crusius, 21, posted a racist tirade on social media and then drove from his rural Texas home to El Paso, opening fire at a Walmart shopping centre, killing 20 people.

NEWS IN BRIEF

EXPULSION MARKED Turkish Jews have observed the 527th anniversary of their exodus from Spain, with leading figures of the community recalling the contribution of the Ottoman Empire, which gave them shelter and security. Moris Levi, deputy leader of Turkey’s Jewish community, said the Ottoman Empire had given his community the right to life, after they were expelled from Spain in 1492. Levi said the Jewish community had brought Andalusian traditions, culture, Western perspective and economic values, while taking shelter in the region.

RHODES MEMORIAL

At a vigil, people mourn the nine victims of a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio. Another shooting in Texas killed nearly 20 people

Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, said: “Thoughts and prayers are simply not enough. We have documented a rise in extremist activity, both online and in our communities – as with too many of these incidents.”

In another shooting, this time in Dayton, Ohio, nine people were killed. The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton described the deaths as “heartbreaking.” Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform

Judaism, said: “It is not enough for elected officials to muster their ‘thoughts and prayers’... I’m sick of the pathetic excuses offered by too many lawmakers for not passing strong and effective common sense gun laws.” The American Jewish

Committee tweeted: “We need common sense gun control NOW”, while its chief executive, David Harris, said: “The US faces an epidemic of mass shootings. We need concrete action, not a template reply. This is a national emergency.”

Descendants of the Greek Jews of Rhodes have taken part in a memorial gathering to commemorate their ancestors who perished in the Shoah. The descendants marched from the Holocaust Memorial, in the medieval town of Rhodes, to the island’s port, where 1,600 Jews were taken before being transported to Auschwitz. The ceremony was held in the presence of David Saltiel, president of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, and representatives of the Jewish community of Rhodes, as well as Sam Montiano, one of the few Auschwitz survivors.

Youth travel through Minsk to learn about its Jewish history A unique educational initiative, the first of its kind, has taken place in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. For more than a week, 75 Russian-speaking young people from Belarus itself, America, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Poland took part in Project

MEGA, travelling throughout the country to learn about its history and the contribution made by its Jewish community. Project MEGA stands for “Memory, Education, Generation, Action,” and was run from Minsk Hillel and held under the auspices of Hillel International and the Genesis Philanthropy

In addition to learning about the past and meeting local Jewish communities, the MEGA participants worked on cleaning and restoring Jewish cemeteries, and decrypted names, dates, prayers and blessings carved on the tombstones, some of them more than 500 years old. “My grandfather died on this land. And we lost his grave,” said Iliana Svechin, from Rutgers Hillel in the United States.

major towns were Jewish, and once there were almost 400 synagogues. MEGA and other joint initiatives by GPG and Hillel aim to connect the new generation of Russian-speaking Jews with their history and legacy. Jeremy Moskowitz, Hillel International’s vice president for international growth and operations, said: “The lasting impact of connecting these

students through their shared culture, heritage and language will exponentially multiply the impact of Russian-speaking Jewish engagement at our local Hillels around the world.” Ilia Salita, GPG president and chief executive, said: “GPG is happy to support the project that combines Jewish learning with action, builds Jewish unity and encourages a further journey into Jewish identity.”

Lawsuit challenges kapparot BROADWAY LEGEND DIES An animal rights group has sued a Jewish centre in Los Angeles to prevent it from using live chickens in the preYom Kippur kapparot custom. The Animal Protection and Rescue League filed a lawsuit against the Woodland Hills Hebrew Discovery Centre in the Los Angeles Superior Court, and seeks an injunction to block the practice.

Centre members performed the ritual last year in its parking lot. The suit alleges the chickens were killed and discarded without being used for food, violating an animal rights law. During the ceremony, a chicken is swung by its legs above a person and then slaughtered, symbolically transferring to it the person’s sins.

The marquee lights of Broadway were dimmed last week after the death of legendary producer and director Hal Prince, aged 91. Born Harold Smith Prince to German-Jewish parents in New York in January 1928, he went on to become the top musical theatre producer of the 20th century, winning an unparalleled 21 Tony Awards, a

feat unlikely ever to be beaten. He worked with both Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Stephen Sondheim on hit shows such as Evita, Company, Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret and Sweeney Todd. Among his best-known work was his production of Fiddler on the Roof for its record-breaking run of 3,242 performances between 1964 and 1972.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Let’s reward bravery Jewish News is always proud to sponsor the No2H8Crime Awards, but never more so than now, because in the past 12 months we have heard some of the most incredible examples of how brave people can stand up to hate, and how brave people must sometimes be to do so. Consider the case of Robbie Mullen, a former far-right sympathiser who last year risked his life to pull ranks and stop a white nationalist – 22-year-old Jack Renshaw – from killing a policewoman and an MP. Just a year after the murder of MP Jo Cox, Mullen told anti-fascist group HOPE Not Hate how Renshaw planned to knife MP Rosie Cooper, and how the group to which he belonged discussed killing Jews in a synagogue. Renshaw had told far-right rallies Jews were “parasites” and should be “eradicated”. Renshaw, a former National Action member, would likely have killed – either Cooper, the PC or Jews – had Mullen not turned whistle-blower, moved to a safe house, then sat in court to make sure Renshaw and others were found guilty. “I had to walk out of my job, I was forced to move home and I have to live with a target on my back, but I know I had no other choice,” he later said. His bravery cannot adequately be described in words. Terrorism remains an ever-present threat, at home and abroad, from jihadis and the far right, against Jews, Muslims, and indeed everyone. The awards come at a time of grave concern among British Jews over antisemitism, but they shine a spotlight on all forms of hate crime. Being an upstander is now more important than ever. If you know someone who has stood up to hate, nominate them for the awards. These are the very people who will stop the scourge spreading. It’s already gone too far. Scooter observations I note a decision is being considered to allow electric scooters on UK roads. In Israel, they have been available and used for quite some time, therefore my observations from Tel Aviv might be of interest. These electric scooters are used primarily on our cycle paths, of which we have many, especially ones that criss-cross vast areas of the city that run down the centre of our streets and boulevards. They are, obviously for the user, most convenient; however, like anything of this nature, there are issues: 1. The speed can be increased surreptitiously. 2. Many users don’t wear protective headgear.

WE MUST STAND WITH THE ROMA Last week marked the 75th anniversary of the destruction of the Gypsy camp at Auschwitz in 1944. It was the culmination of Hitler’s brutal war of racial extermination, whereby between 500,000 and 1,500,000 Roma and Sinti were murdered. I was proud to represent B’nai B’rith UK in commemorating this appalling genocide. It is important our community stands in

solidarity with the Roma, who have also faced persecution throughout their history. Yet today, few powerful figures are lobbying on their behalf when prejudice continues to raise its ugly head. We know better than most where such bigotry can lead.

‘INCIDENTS’ ARE NOT ATTACKS

“7 fat cows, 7 thin cows, 7 fat sheaves of grain, 7 thin sheaves of grain? Hmmm...probably what’s left of the UK’s farming industry after a no-deal Brexit!”

While the Community Security Trust stats show record numbers of ‘incidents’, they also show remarkably low numbers of ‘attacks’. Yet when we hear politicians talking about these things, they often get mistaken and say

there have been hundreds of ‘attacks’. Most people understand an ‘attack’ in the oldfashioned sense: an assault or destruction of property. Thankfully this is not the case.

To tee or not to tee, that’s the dress code question ALEX BRUMMER

CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL

A

s readers will know, the adage “clothes makes the man” is as relevant today as it was in the time of ancient Greece and Homer. One of the staples in The Daily Mail is coverage of male and female fashion and the sartorial habits of those in the headlines, from Boris Johnson to the Arcadia tycoon Philip Green. Dress codes have changed dramatically over my lifetime and continue to do so. The top hat and morning suit used to be de riguer in the wardens box and for Shammash, while the bowler hat (I have inherited my father’s) was standard wear at the levaya, high holidays and more Anglicised communities on Shabbat. Rabbis liked their canonicals and the chazan treasured his kosher mitre. Most of this formality has been swept into the sea. The requirement at most Jewish charity dinners was a minimum of black tie. Lounge suits have replaced that attire and how long will it be before that

catch-all – the smart casual – displaces the suit. In dressing down, the Jewish community is following broader society. Even in the most formal settings there has been change. After several ballots, the Athenæum decided recently that when the mercury rises, jackets and even ties can be removed. There are two main reasons for modernisation of shul attire. The first is common to the rest of society. Climate change means previously temperate zones such as the UK are experiencing extreme hot weather. This has turned some synagogues, such as my own sanctuary in Richmond, into hothouses. Even though the brick and glass skylight construction is relatively modern, no one thought it worthwhile to put in air

STRANGELY ISRAEL, THE ULTIMATE CASUAL SOCIETY, IS NOW MORE FORMAL THAN HERE

conditioning. The result is a hothouse which encourages people to dress down. On a recent steamy Shabbat, it was noticeable that the only member of the community not to leave his jacket and tie at home was the rabbi. The second force for change is Israel. Since my first visit to Israel in the 1960s I have noticed more formality. Shorts among citizens were much more common in the more pioneering days. But Israel has striven to become a more Western and business-like democracy and less casual in its outlook. Long trousers, suits and even ties have become prevalent. The standard synagogue-going clothes tends to be dark slacks, drifting into denims, and white shirt. There is a prevalent view in UK communities that what is fine in Israel is now acceptable here. At a recent Shabbat at Western Marble Arch, the whole gamut was on display. Younger people, I assume tourists, in shorts. Established members, some taking part in the service, in slacks and patterned shirts. A well-known business person in dark T-shirt, slacks and elegant slip-on suedes

without socks. Even a Chasid, who arrived in a long silk coat, abandoned it for his shirtsleeves. At least half the chaps were without ties. At the daily morning minyan, there has been a lively and friendly debate as to whether it is appropriate for the person leading the service, normally a mourner or someone marking a family Yahrzeit, on the hottest of summer days to daven in shorts. Needless to say, everyone has a view. A visitor, from a modern Orthodox community at Raanana in Israel, offered his perspective. In his synagogue, shorts are definitely out for anyone leading the service and not encouraged among community members. In some strange way Israel, the ultimate casual society, had become more formal than London! And where am I in this debate? I am always reminded of the Hebrew words above many Aron Kodesh: “Know before whom you stand.” That for me requires some measure of reverence. It’s up to the individual to determine what they deem fitting, but there should be sensitivity as to what might disquiet others.

Honouring Roma victims of the Nazis, 75 years on OLIVIA MARKSWOLDMAN

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY TRUST

O

n the evening of 2 August 1944, the ‘Gypsy Family Camp’ at Auschwitz-Birkenau was ‘liquidated’ under orders from Heinrich Himmler. Following weeks of deportations, all 2,897 remaining Roma and Sinti men, women and children were taken to the gas chambers and murdered. In total, 200,000 Roma people were murdered by the Nazis – 20,000 at Auschwitz-Birkenau. On Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January), we commemorate all victims of Nazi persecution, and encourage people to share their experiences at events across the UK. But many people still don’t know about the persecution of the Roma people. While most people have at least some

knowledge about the notorious Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, fewer people are aware that Roma people were imprisoned, forced into slave labour and murdered at the camp. Under the Nazis, Roma people were targeted for complete destruction. In all, more than 25 percent of the pre-war Roma population was murdered or perished as a result of starvation or disease. Many more were imprisoned, used as forced labour or subject to forced sterilisation and medical experimentation. But the end of the war did not signal the end of the suffering for Roma people. Communities across Europe have continued to face persecution, discrimination and prejudice based on their identity. A recent study from the charity Protection Approaches found that 41 percent of British people surveyed believe gypsy, Roma or traveller communities are a threat to Britain’s success and prosperity. This is deeply worrying – Roma people

MANY PEOPLE STILL DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE NAZI PERSECUTION OF ROMA COMMUNITIES are being targeted across Europe, due to indiscriminate prejudice against the whole community. The findings of this research show the persistence of negative stereotypes which continue to influence attitudes in Britain today. We know that, on Holocaust Memorial Day, people across the country organise exhibitions, displays and performances to share the experiences of Roma people. One of the life stories often shared is that of Otto Rosenberg.

He faced persistent discrimination as a young Sinti boy living in Nazi Germany, and remembers being called a ‘dirty gypsy’ by other children. Shortly before his 16th birthday, he was sent to Auschwitz, where he had the number ‘Z 6084’ tattooed on his arm. Otto was sent to another concentration camp on the night of 2 August 1944. His family members who were left behind, including his sister and grandmother, were murdered that night in the gas chambers. Otto somehow survived, but struggled to cope with the loss of his family for the rest of his life. Last week, on 2 August, we joined with people across the UK and internationally on Roma Genocide Remembrance Day to remember those who were murdered that night at Auschwitz 75 years ago, and all Roma people persecuted by the Nazis. We stand with the Roma community against the prejudice they continue to face today.

Why does Netanyahu remain so popular? JAMES SORENE CHIEF EXECUTIVE, BICOM

L

ike him or not, Benjamin Netanyahu is one of the most successful leaders in the democratic world. In April, after a decade in power, and now facing possible bribery and fraud charges, his Likud party won 35 seats and a record 1.1 million votes. But he failed to form a government, so will try again in September. Forty-two percent of Israelis tell pollsters he is their preferred prime minister, compared with thirty percent who prefer Benny Gantz. Why is his support still so strong? Anshel Pfeffer, author of the recent biography, Bibi: The Turbulent Life and Times of Benjamin Netanyahu, says there are four factors: “He has delivered 10 years of relative calm and economic prosperity, has a strong right-wing base and a lack of alternative candidates.” Netanyahu talks tough, but is a cautious military leader, ever mindful of the human and political cost of conflict. On Netanyahu’s

watch, there have been two Palestinian suicide bombings, compared with 143 in the 10 years before that. In the past 12 months, hundreds of missiles have been fired into Israel from Gaza. Residents of Israel’s southern communities who spent traumatic nights in shelters criticised the government for not hitting Hamas harder; Netanyahu authorised a restrained response and agreed a ceasefire. Israel’s economic boom had many authors. But Netanyahu, the Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate, has a reputation for economic competence, claiming credit for liberalising the economy and delivering low

unemployment, high growth and a booming tech sector. For many Israelis, life is good. His right-wing base are attracted by the authenticity and veracity of his vision. As an officer in the elite Sayeret Matkal, he fought Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) terrorists for years. The death of his brother Yoni in the 1976 Entebbe operation propelled Bibi into the limelight as an international anti-terrorism activist. In his 1991 book, A Place Among the Nations, Bibi said Iran was an existential threat and proposed limited autonomy for the Palestinians because of the danger of terrorist attacks from the West Bank. In 1993, when Israel signed a peace agreement with the PLO, Netanyahu’s narrative looked like a relic from a bygone era. But the collapse of that peace agreement in the bloody violence of the second intifada plus Hamas control of Gaza made his warnings prophetic. As the Israeli left’s dream of peace turned to dust, its leaders never recovered with a new plan. Netanyahu’s support rests on an Israeli consensus that wanted terrorism to end and lost faith in peace with the Palestinians as

every territorial concession became a missile launchpad. Netanyahu interprets that as a mandate for stability, to make no concessions and take no risks. He believes that in the Middle East, only the strong survive. According to writer Matti Friedman: “He says to Israelis, there’s a room. And in that room are the likes of Putin and Assad and Khamenei. Who do you want in there? A straight shooter who believes in the fundamental goodness of humanity. Or your most wily representative? Many Israelis say yes, the latter.” Netanyahu can meet with Putin, Trump or Xi Jinping and get down to business. For a tiny country such as Israel, that matters; Likud have made it a focus of their campaign. This election is different. Netanyahu faces a fight on both flanks. Avigdor Lieberman on the right attacks Bibi’s alliance with the strictly Orthodox, Gantz in the centre attacks him for alleged corruption and Ehud Barak attacks him for everything. But Bibi has always been lucky with his opponents, none of whom come close to his skills and experience. For many Israelis surveying what’s on offer, he’s still the best option.

eflect on new Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s record on Israel and you’ll find a mixed picture, reflecting the inconsistencies for which he is sometimes accused. First, it is necessary to dispel a myth: that he is nothing but a British version of President Trump. Certainly, there are superficial similarities. Both have a somewhat maverick and ebullient style, both stand accused of ignoring detail and of serial lying, both have been accused of bigotry towards minorities and both are willing to ride a coach and horses through their respective political establishments. But the similarities mask obvious differences. For one, Johnson is a classically trained scholar whose knowledge of modern history and culture is compelling. For another, he is an experienced politi-

cian, having served as an MP since 2001, mayor of London for eight years and, most recently, as foreign secretary. Moreover, Johnson’s occasionally offensive remarks mask the fact that, as a classic liberal, he champions individual freedom and liberty and has often been positive towards ethnic minorities and LGBT people. He specifically condemned President Trump’s Muslim migration ban. And as a journalist of 30 years standing, he has little time for the incessant attacks on the press which have become routine in Washington. This makes a difference to the Jews in one important sense. Johnson is a Brexiteer because he believes that EU membership is anti-democratic and undermines Parliamentary sovereignty. He champions liberalism, openness and democratic institutions, the kind of political environment in which Jews traditionally thrive and to which they make the most positive contribution. It helps that he is proud of his Jewish maternal great

grandfather, a Lithuanian rabbi. In the past, Johnson has lauded Israel as a “great country” and described himself as a “passionate Zionist”. He visited as a university student in 1984 and spent time volunteering on Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi. He would later speak of the “bonds of hard work, self-reliance and audacious and relentless energy” holding together “a remarkable country” and, in a comparison of Israel with Churchill, praised the ‘daring, audacity, derring-do and indomitability’ of the Jewish state. As mayor of London, he arrived in Israel for a three-day trade mission in November 2015 with a team of high tech entrepreneurs. He later said that London was the ‘natural tech partner for Israeli firms.’ This extensive economic and technological collaboration is likely to increase now that Johnson is prime minister. Johnson has also condemned the BDS movement in the strongest terms, describing it as a “completely crazy” campaign led by “ridiculous, snuggletoothed, corduroy-wearing lefty academics”. Those comments, made in 2015, led to a series of meetings in Ramallah being cancelled. He has also understood the endemic anti-Israel bias found within the UN. In a visit to the UN Human Rights Council in its first session of 2018, he urged the body to ditch Item 7 (which singles out Israel for criticism) as it was “disproportionate and damaging to the cause of peace”. But at times, he has said things that have offended supporters of Israel. In 2014 at the height of Israel’s war with Hamas, Johnson deprecated Israel’s actions as “disproportionate, ugly and tragic” and described the war as “utterly horrifying and unacceptable”. He has condemned “incitement and rocket fire against Israel” but also called for an independent inquiry over 120 Palestinian deaths on the Gaza border. Johnson also reportedly played an important role in drafting UN Security Council resolution 2334 which said that all settlements established since 1967, including in East Jerusalem,”were a flagrant violation under international law”.

The resolution was widely condemned within the UK Jewish community whose representatives considered it a betrayal and disgrace. He is a strong supporter of the two state solution, which marks him out as having a thoroughly conventional perspective on the conflict. But this led to a somewhat nuanced celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration in which he lamented that the Arab population had been denied self determination, even though the Declaration did not speak of the “national rights” of the Arab population. On Iran, it is hard to read the exact contours of a foreign policy. In the past, he has expressed support for the JCPOA signed in 2015 and rallied round the EU in rejecting Trump’s decision to leave the agreement. In 2018, he said that Britain had “no intention of walking away” from the nuclear deal and as recently as July 2019, urged Iran not to abandon the JCPOA. In a recent interview with this newspaper, , Johnson continued to defend the agreement but hinted that if there was evidence of Iranian non-compliance, Britain stood ready to re-impose sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Yet this can only mean that, contrary to all previous positions, the UK would be abandoning the JCPOA. Now that tensions between Iran and the West have ramped up in recent months, it remains to be seen whether Johnson’s government will pivot more towards Europe or the USA. When it comes to terror groups, his record is again inconsistent. He failed to put pressure on the Home Office to ban Al Quds Day marches in London or prevent the Hezbollah flag from flying, despite the raucous antisemitic rhetoric on display. Yet when the Muslim home secretary did proscribe Hezbollah, Johnson tweeted his congratulations. What are we to make of all this? It is fair to conclude that Johnson is a genuine friend of Israel and a man committed to its peace, security and prosperity. But in his views on settlements, Gaza and Iran, his perspective is largely aligned with that of the Foreign Office.

MUSIC Review: J-Lo, Park Hayarkon, Tel Aviv

Pop queen Jennifer Lopez, known to her adoring fans as J-Lo, continued her global 50th birthday celebration last Thursday night with a long-awaited performance in front of a thrilled Tel Aviv audience at Park Hayarkon, the city’s main outdoor arena. The crowd, which numbered around 57,000, was ecstatic to have Lopez in Israel, especially after she shunned repeated calls from activists to boycott the country. Lopez brought along her usual array of dancers, around six costume changes and plenty of personality to the party, which included giving a glimpse of her famed, toned backside, slightly visible through a low-cut bodysuit. “That’s my birthday suit,” she yelled to the crowd. Lopez, who arrived in Israel on Tuesday with her fiancée, former baseball star Alex Rodriguez, clearly wanted to connect with the audience. “Tel Aviv!” she shouted. “How are you all feeling? Did you come to party? Did you get an invite? Don’t know if you heard, but it’s my birthday and we’re gonna celebrate together.” With that, Lopez launched into Medicine, followed by Love Don’t Cost A Thing, which drove the crowd wild, and straight onto their feet, where they stayed for most of the hour-and-40-minute show. Lopez had plenty to say to the crowd throughout the performance. “It’s my birthday party and I have rules: You need to dance, have fun and party!” she said. “There are three things I don’t mess around with: Family, party and money!” Backed by 20 performers, she didn’t stop dancing throughout the night, wearing costumes ranging from neon green, thigh-high stilettos to full gowns. Her high energy level was palpable, stirring the crowd and keeping them at her side every moment of the show. To the crowd’s surprise, she brought her 10-year-old daughter, Emme Maribel Muñiz, to the stage later in the evening to sing Ain’t Your Mama together. For Pride is All I Have, Lopez told the audience to raise their phones and urged them to sing along, with men and women voicing different parts of the song. “You don’t mind if I look at you for a moment,” she called out, her face visible on the enormous screens. “Can you feel my love? I’m just taking it in.” Toward the end, the DJ pumped up the crowd, urging everyone to sing happy birthday to Lopez. But it was Lopez who had the final word. “Tel Aviv, what an amazing night this has been,” she called out. “I want to thank you for coming to celebrate with me. Shalom! I learned how to say this — ‘Ani ohev otcha,’” she said, Hebrew for “I love you,” before bidding farewell to the thrilled crowd.

Orthodox Judaism

SEDRA Devarim BY RABBI ALEX CHAPPER After 40 years of leadership, Moses bids farewell to the Jewish people with a powerful valedictory speech. Within it is a veiled rebuke for the times they rebelled against God, including such transgressions as the sins of the Golden Calf and of the Spies. He reminds them it even reached the point where he was forced to ask, “How can I alone bear your contentiousness, your burdens, and your quarrels?” According to Chizkuni, Moses was referring to the internal quarrels between Jew and fellow Jew. During the 40 years in the desert, their major concern should have been getting into the Promised Land, but instead they wasted their time and effort on petty concerns and Moses had been forced to appoint judges to exert authority over them. By asking, eichah (“how”), the Midrash says a link is made to the opening verse of Eichah (Lamentations) in which prophet Jeremiah bemoans how the once great city of Jerusalem is now desolate following the destruction of the Temple. Devarim is always read on the Shabbat before Tisha B’av – the saddest day in the Jewish calendar when both Temples were destroyed and when we read the Book of Lamentations. Our constant fractiousness is tantamount to self-inflicted harm and means we continue to mourn the Temple and pray for it to be rebuilt. The Rambam says the purpose of fasting on Tisha B’Av is to contemplate and repent for our and our ancestors’ sins that were and continue to be the cause of tragedies. If we hear Moses’ words and utilise the fast correctly, it should be the last and we’ll merit to see the rebuilding of the Temple.

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about: The Moon landings BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND Few phrases encapsulate the ambition, ingenuity and dedication of humanity in the way of Neil Armstrong’s famous line: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” An incredible technological and scientific feat, the Apollo missions marked a change in the way that we view not only space, but life itself. The Jewish calendar beats according to the pulse of the moon. Rosh Chodesh, the New Month, is calculated to align with the Molad – the appearance of the new Moon every 29-and-a-half or so days. There are several prayers and ceremonies that mark the New Moon. Beforehand, we announce its coming with Birkat Hachodesh, the day itself is semi-festive, and afterwards there is

Divine Presence is drawn down into this world,” (Racanti, 13th century.). Some emphasise the Moon being a metaphor for the trials and tribulations of the Jewish people, constantly waxing and waning until the end of time with the coming of the Messiah. We may no longer get these feelings often when we look up towards the heavens, even on the occasions we can see past the light pollution and aeroplanes. Yet when I was watching the footage of the Moon landings from 50 years ago, listening to the recordings and reading about the miracles, I found myself with a definitive answer to Khrushchev’s question of Yuri Gagarin: “Was God up there?” For me, the answer is most definitely yes. Rabbi Garry Wayland is a teacher and educator for US Living and Learning

a prayer, said at night when the light of the moon is significant enough for its effects to be noticeable. Our sages make a particularly profound comment about this prayer: “Greeting the New Moon is like greeting the presence of the Divine.” It is hard to imagine the feelings those living in the pre-scientific era must have felt when they looked up at the Moon. We can glean some sense from the comments of our classic commentators. “Through the movements of the Moon we gain a sense of the might of God and His deeds…” (Levush, 16th century) and “Through the blessing of the Moon the

The Bible Says What? Deuteronomy was made up by a religious zealot?! BY RABBI PETE TOBIAS “I have found the book of the Law,” the priest Hilkiah tells Shaphan the scribe in 2 Kings, Chapter 22. Shaphan has been sent by King Josiah to the Temple in Jerusalem to ensure that those working to renovate it are being paid. Suddenly he is in possession of a remarkable find: the Sefer HaTorah that had apparently been hidden in the walls of Solomon’s Temple. This discovery is what makes up some or all of the book of Deuteronomy (most likely the middle section, chapters 13 to 26). But is it just a Biblical dodgy dossier? Shaphan would surely have been intrigued to be handed such a mysterious scroll. But he simply takes it to the king, reports that the workers have been paid and then adds “and Hilkiah the priest gave me this book”. Shaphan then reads this “book” (actually a scroll) to Josiah. Judah’s young king tears his clothes on hearing how far his people have fallen

short of these laws. Only after tearing his clothes does the King think to check the authenticity of the source by sending Shaphan and some others to Huldah the prophetess for confirmation. Shaphan is the key figure in this mystery. It is thought that he was the ringleader of a group of scribes and prophets – now referred to by biblical scholars as Shaphanites – who were keen to reform religious life in Judah. To add further intrigue, Huldah, who confirms the text as God’s word, was almost certainly part of this gang too. Later Shaphan and his sons feature in the book of Jeremiah (a contemporary), and his grandson, Gedaliah, becomes the first governor of the Babylonian province of Y’hudah before being murdered by the Judahites as a traitor. We can certainly conclude there is more to Shaphan and his family than 2 Kings reveals.

Progressively Speaking Why the month of Av reminds us to challenge hatred BY RABBI SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD The new moon of Av comes in the 30-day period of mourning known as bein ha’metzarim, ushering in an even more doleful period until the black fast of Tisha B’Av. This is the saddest time of our calendar as we commemorate the fall of Jerusalem, the destruction of both Temples and exile of the Jewish people from our land. For generations we saw this period as emblematic of our problems: sojourners in the lands of others, dependant on their goodwill, fearful of their anger. From Aaron’s death on Rosh Chodesh Av onwards, this month has accumulated misfortune in Jewish tradition. The decree to wander the desert for 40 years was given on 9th Av. Beitar, the last holdout of the Bar Kochba revolution, fell on this day in 135CE. It was also the last date to convert in Inquisition Spain... It was a date to be feared and many take special care against harm.

In 1872 in his Reform Siddur, David Einhorn wrote a prayer to commemorate this day. His was a different view, seeing the destruction of the Temple and the dispersion of the Jews as a good thing: “Israel was no longer to dwell in separation from the rest of thy children, who groped in darkness and folly; but was to spread like a fertilising stream. The one temple in Jerusalem sank into the dust, so that countless temples might arise to [God’s] honour and glory all over ...the globe.” Two months before Rosh Hashanah, Av sounds a warning of what can happen when we don’t address our bad behaviour and that of

our society. Tradition ascribes Tisha B’Av to causeless hatred of the other. Reading Lamentations we find, “Let us search and try our ways, and return to God” (3:40). It is a wake-up call for us to consider what is important not just in our own souls, but in how we act in the world. In Av, our grief centres on exile, being swept along helplessly by great powers, and we begin the soul work for Yom Kippur. But Av can also challenge us to help other exiles and refugees, particularly today when we see so many running from war and famine. Far from becoming unimportant in a world where the state of Israel has been reborn, Av reminds us of our responsibility to challenge causeless hatred and to repair our world in time for the judgement and forgiveness of Rosh Hashanah. Sylvia Rothschild has been a community rabbi in south London for 30 years

ANNA SCHUCHMAN & CHARLOTTE WIKLER HEALTH & FITNESS

ACELIFESTYLE Dear Anna and Charlotte I need to go on a diet to lose some weight and one of my friends told me to cut out all carbohydrates. Would you recommend that? Ben Dear Ben Here’s the most important thing you need to know; not

all carbohydrates are bad! There are twotypes of carbohydrates: highly processed refined sugary carbohydrates, such as cakes, sweets, sugary cereals and white bread, and then there are unrefined carbohydrates such as wholegrains, fruits, vegetables and legumes. Too much refined carbohydrates can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease as they are loaded with highly processed sugars and fats. However, unrefined carbohydrates are our body’s main source of fuel and provide us with essential nutrients and fibres that our body requires. If you cut out all carbohydrates, you will be

missing out on the fibre that can help you feel fuller for longer, which in turn reduces cravings between meals, which can really help with your weight loss goals. Fibre is also great for your gut health and helps keep your digestive system moving, so please consider this before cutting out all carbohydrates. Our advice is to limit refined carbohydrates and make sure you are getting a good variety of fruit, vegetables and wholegrains. Just remember that to lose weight, you have to be in a calorie deficit, (eating less than your body requires to function) so eating too much of anything can have a negative impact on your weight.
