Monumental decision

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS There are hundreds of Holocaust memorials worldwide, 69 in the United States alone – from Nashville and Nebraska to Missouri and Mississippi. Most are incongruously located thousands of miles from humanity’s greatest crime. Here in the UK the Holocaust is, to quote survivor Ben Helfgott, “part of our collective national history”. Yet ask

100 random Londoners to locate our capital city’s Shoah memorial and 99 will struggle to tell you it’s a pleasant but unremarkable garden in Hyde Park, denoted by an engraved rock. John Lennon’s memorial garden in Central Park carries greater emotional weight. As we approach the landmark 75th anniversary of liberation, is it still too much to ask for a sufficiently respectful

British tribute in a fitting location? One finally appeared on the horizon back in 2015 when plans for a Westminster monument and learning centre opposite Parliament were announced by then Prime Minister David Cameron. The project, which has cross-party support, backing from all five living prime ministers and the endorsement of Muslim, Christian and Jewish leaders, has

been supremely led by former Labour MP Ed Balls and Lord Pickles. Yet it’s faced “not in my back yard” disapproval from the outset, mostly from an environmental standpoint which resulted in the original proposals being revised to ease concerns. A ‘Save Victoria Tower Gardens’ petition has been signed by more than 10,000 local residents. Continued on page 16

News / Holocaust memorial / Far-right expulsion

Shoah memorial decision looms A leading Westminster councillor this week publicly backed plans for a national Holocaust memorial to stand beside the Houses of Parliament, as the deadline for a final decision draws near, writes Mathilde Frot. Cllr Paul Dimoldenberg was the only elected representative to personally support the proposed monument and museum in Victoria Tower Gardens, after Jewish News contacted nearly 30 councillors across Westminster City Council. Dimoldenberg said: “I believe it is perfectly possible to maintain and improve the gardens for use by residents, workers and tourists and

accommodate the proposed memorial and learning centre, which will take up about seven percent of the gardens. “From what I have seen of the proposals, the gardens will be significantly improved, the children’s playground will be the same size and the new café and toilet facilities will benefit everyone. “I understand the concerns raised by a number of residents and groups, but am confident their concerns will not turn out to be anything like they are currently portrayed.” Westminster City Council’s major planning applications committee, which comprises half a dozen councillors, is expected to vote in the autumn. The memorial has received cross-party support in Parliament and the backing of the last five prime ministers and leading representatives of the Muslim, Christian and Jewish faiths. In August, Holocaust survivor Sir Ben Helfgott threw his weight behind the memorial, writing in a letter to The Times that there is “no better location” for it than next to Parliament. “In the UK we do not currently have a significant memorial to the Holocaust, even though it is also part of our collective national history,” Sir Ben wrote. Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock also backed the memorial, claiming it “will enable a much wider audience to learn about the past, Britain’s relationship with the Holocaust and its contemporary

Image of the proposed design for the national Holocaust memorial

relevance today”. But the memorial has also faced fierce criticism from heritage groups and residents, who say it is in the wrong place and will obstruct historic views. Revised plans were submitted to the council earlier this year following objections by residents and The Royal Parks, which expressed environmental concerns. An internal letter leaked this month suggested council officers are “heading towards”

recommending the rejection of the planning application. Among the memorial’s critics, Tory MP Sir Edward Leigh has tabled 125 parliamentary questions about the centre since June 2017 at an estimated cost of £20,000 for taxpayers, according to The Mirror. Leigh, who lives 700 yards from the site, spoke out against the project, describing it as “really just a gimmick”, the newspaper reported. • Editorial comment, page 16

An infiltrator to a European far-right group has told how its UK branch was recently expelled because it seemed “more open” to antisemitism. Generation Identity, part of the “identitarian movement”, campaigns for “ethno-cultural purity” and against the “Islamisation” of the continent through mass immigration, with chapters in countries across Europe, but denies that it is neo-Nazi. An identitarian sympathiser is believed to have carried out the Christchurch mosque attacks. Anti-fascist organisation HOPE not hate, working with The Observer, revealed this week that the UK branch has now been expelled for inviting Scottish video blogger Colin Robertson as keynote speaker at its annual conference. Robertson vlogs under the pseudonym ‘Millennial Woes’ and is described as a white supremacist and an antisemitic conspiracy theorist.

In 2016 he spoke at a conference organised by white supremacist Richard Spencer’s alt-right US National Policy Institute at which supporters gave Nazi salutes and shouted “Hail Trump”. ‘Mike,’ the infiltrator whose real identity is not being revealed, said two Royal Navy personnel – one due to serve on a Trident nuclear submarine soon – were members of Generation Identity UK, which believes in “The Great Replacement”, the theory that white Europeans are being replaced through immigration. Generation Identity UK says it is a nonviolent group and there is no suggestion it has been responsible for any violent acts. Dave Rich of the Community Security Trust said: “The group have been around for a while and is connected to European movements of a similar name and ideology. It’s a new version of an old far-right ideology that, as ever, has antisemitism at its core.”

Settler group UK talk postponed A London presentation by an Israeli settler group accused of using lawfare to oppose Bedouin villages has been postponed. A senior figure from Regavim, which British Jewish groups have accused of “Jewish extremism”, had been invited to the UK by the charitable arm of UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) and was due to give a talk this Sunday. However, in a statement on Tuesday, UKLFI said Naomi

Linder Kahn would no longer be speaking because the event “has been postponed, so proper security measures can be put into place”. It added: “A consortium of BDS [boycott, divestment and sanctions monement] activists and antiIsrael groups planned a mass demonstration.” Regavim files lawsuits to block or destroy “illegal” buildings, which mainly affects Bedouin and Palestinian fami-

lies. Its mission is “to protect Jewish lands and resources and prevent an alien takeover”. Regavim vehemently rejects it is “extremist”. This week, UKLFI said there had been “some misinformed and misdirected criticism”, adding: “UKLFI Charitable Trust is not aligned with any particular political viewpoint or party in the UK or Israel [and] does not endorse any form of racism.”

JVL disinvited / Book criticised / News

Festival rescinds JVL invite A summer festival has disinvited a controversial Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL) speaker, citing concerns about the “febrile nature” of the Labour antisemitism row, writes Mathilde Frot. Leah Levane (pictured), who is a Labour councillor in Hastings, is a co-chair of the left-wing fringe group Jewish Voice for Labour. She was due to appear in a panel at the Greenbelt Festival to discuss faith, but her invitation was withdrawn days before the event. The festival of arts, faith and activism returned for the 46th time over the August Bank Holiday weekend in Northamptonshire. Its line up included

the group Extinction Rebellion, comedian Russell Brand, radio personality Paul Mason and the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. Greenbelt has previously hosted controversial speakers, such as anti-Zionist blogger Robert Cohen, who described former Momentum vicechair Jackie Walker as a “longstanding antiracist campaigner and educator” in

a blog post this year. In a statement, Greenbelt said Levane’s presence on the bill would “on balance” divert attention from the festival’s “rich history and wider Jewish conversation”. It added: “In disinviting her, it must be made clear that Leah was not coming as a representative or spokes-

person for the Jewish community in the UK. She had been invited as one voice onto panel; as a lively and interesting contributor; as someone whose passionate and contrary voice in the face of the prevailing narrative in the UK we considered would be interesting to include.” In response, JVL issued a statement, claiming “pressure was put on organisers” to rescind the invitation. It added: “The pressure will not reduce because Greenbelt has succumbed to it. Instead it will give succour to those who seek, at the very least, to deny legitimacy to JVL’s important perspective.”

NEW BOOK ‘MINIMISES’ LABOUR ANTISEMITISM Jewish groups have condemned a new book that claims the public is misled on the scale of Labour antisemitism, writes Mathilde Frot. Bad News for Labour Antisemitism, the Party and Public Belief, published by Pluto Press, is based on analysis of more than 250 articles and news segments about Labour antisemitism claims. The 224-page volume, out next month, states: “The issue of antisemitism in the Labour Party should not be minimised, but is it really credible to suggest that British politics is the worst in Europe citing

t. Es

Jeremy Corbyn,” it reads. “Recent research has evidenced systematic distortions in mainstream coverage and it seems highly likely this played some role in shaping (mis)perceptions of the issue,” it claims. One chapter asserts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism is not “fit for purpose” and has rendered Jews more “vulnerable to antisemitism”, while another chapter maintains Labour’s leadership should make clear what constitutes antisemitism, citing the example

of the Richard Burgon MP, who described Zionism as “the enemy of peace”. The Board of Deputies criticised the book, saying: “Labour’s antisemitism crisis might have come to an end long ago, if more time had been spent eradicating the problem, and less time minimising it – as this book attempts to. Mark Gardner of the CST said: “The reliability of this book is shown by its ‘conclusion’ chapter, which shamelessly implies the far right has murdered French Jews in terror attacks, rather than jihadists”.

News / GCSE results

And it ca JCoSS students Aran Haber, Tom Mosseri, Lucy Ritter, Ben Brent and Emma Wilkins, all received at least nine GCSEs at grade 9

All smiles: Students at Immanuel

Jewish students were “over the moon” last week after racking up record GCSE results, but some of the community’s best performing schools did less well than last year. This is the second year of the 1-9 grading system, with 7 now the equivalent of the old A grade, 8 equivalent to an A* and 9 amounting to an A** rating. Only three percent of results across the country fell into this top category. As with last year, there was little to separate the best performing Jewish secondary schools in London, with JFS in Kenton, JCoSS in New Barnet, Yavneh College in Borehamwood and Hasmonean High School in Hendon all at the top of their game. Fee-paying Immanuel College also hit the high notes, while Hasmonean High School just pipped the others for the best Jewish state school in the south-east, with 53 percent of all grades marked 7-9, on a par with last year. Katherine Brice, head of Hasmonean Girls’ School, said: “These impressive results are the product of hard work by the girls who have maintained their commitment to Jewish Studies alongside their secular subjects.” Libby Levey, who achieved 11 grades marked 8 or 9, said she was “absolutely over the moon, and more than a little surprised”, before paying tribute to her “incredible teachers”.

PUSH FOR THE FLEXIBILITY THAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED

Debbie Lebrett, head of Hasmonean Boys’ School, said: “We are particularly proud of our students’ achievements given they have sat very challenging GCSE examinations. We are delighted to congratulate each one of them.” Second to Hasmonean was cross-denominationalJCoSS,whichhada“record-breakingyear” with 50 percent of results graded at 7 or above, a substantial increase from 40 percent last year, while 18 percent got the highest 9 grade, and 83 percent registered grade 5 or above. Headteacher Patrick Moriarty was particularly thrilled at the excellence shown in the three sciences, as well as in Jewish education and history, with seven students notching up at least nine grade 9s, three of whom scored 10. “We’re delighted,” he said. “These outstanding results surpass our already strong track record. Hard work and resilience, married to the expertise and care of their teachers, enabled students to meet the increased challenges of new specifications with flair. I am exceptionally proud of students and colleagues alike.” The school’s top performers included Tom Mosseri, Lucy Ritter, David Robertson, Tammy Berlinsky, Ben Brent, Aran Haber, Emma Wilkins, Ethan Cohn, Jacob Inwald, Aaron Maurice, Adam Tobiansky, Eliana Jackson and Yuval Kaufman. At JFS, 46 percent of grades were marked

me to pass! 7-9, a fall of five percent on last year, while 80 percent were 5 or above, compared to 91 percent in 2018. Headteacher Rachel Fink called the results “outstanding”, noting 28 percent were at 8 or 9. “The results are the culmination of the collective hard work or students and staff, with support from home,” she said. “I am deeply proud of all our students who have shown such commitment to their studies as a step towards their future goals.” Fink added that many had “made remarkable progress in terms of their value-added grades”, while others had “succeeded despite personal challenges over the past two years”. There was also a slight dip in overall performance at Yavneh, with 44 percent of grades marked 7-9, a drop of six percent on last year, while 90 percent reached grade 5 or above, compared to 92 percent in 2018. Yavneh head Spencer Lewis said it was “another fantastic set of GCSE results” after last week’s A-level results established the college as the country’s best-performing non-selective state school. “Pupils have worked very hard and should be really proud of what they have achieved. We are also extremely proud of

those pupils who have taken vocational courses in business studies, PE and digital media and who did incredibly well.” Special mention went to Yavneh students Josh Angel, Georgia Reback, Gabrielle Adda, Georgia Fishman, Zev Grunwald, Talia Rabinowitz, Scott Cowen, Sam Wagman, Jess Kosky, Emily Keen, Joel Shamash, Nathan Kay and Gaby Landau. Kantor King Solomon High School in Barkingside said it had been another year of “progress” and paid tribute to students of English, maths, Jewish studies and religious studies. Exceptional performances were noted for Manoor Afseh, Alessandra Catana, Pratap Guha, Lok-Yee Lam, Abi Marcovitch, Rafail Rafailov, Natasha Schiffman, Louisa Sherman, Emily Sweeney, Ayra Tariq and Smilte Vilimaite. Headteacher Hannele Reece said: “I am tremendously proud of the whole year group. We have maintained our amazing success at GCSE.” At Immanuel College, the results were described as “outstanding”, with 70 percent of all grades marked 7-9. This year, 29 percent of Immanuel grades reached the top mark of 9, doubling the number of

highest hitters compared to 2018. Special mention was given to Gideon Futerman, Raquel Menashe and Sarah Root, who achieved a clean sweep of top marks in all their subjects. Headteacher Gary Griffin said: “We congratulate all our students on receiving such an excellent set of results, which continue to break college records. We are so proud of everyone’s accomplishments, which are the culmination of hard work and dedication by students and teachers alike.” The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School achieved its best results on record for the top grade at GCSE. A total of 73.4 percent of all grades were 9, 8 and A*. Another 23 percent of Habs students have achieved 10 or more straight 9, 8 and A*s, with 51.1 percent at grade 9. Special mention was given to Habs student Max Joseph, a member of the Habs Jewish Society who is set to attend a UJIA leadership course. He achieved 10 results marked at grade 9. The Board of Deputies congratulated all students, but vice-president Edwin Shuker noted there seemed to be a decline in numbers taking Modern Hebrew.  Editorial comment, page 16

Pupils set records for the community Pupils at Jewish schools celebrated strong A-level results despite a national dip in top grades. A quarter of grades (25.5 percent) this year were A* or A nationally, slumping to the lowest level since 2007, the Joint Council for Qualifications revealed. JFS recorded “exceptional” results, with 50 percent of grades at A* or A. Some 22 percent achieved A* grades, while 77 percent were at A* to B. Yavneh College registered a “remarkable” 53 percent of all grades at A* or A, while JCoSS in Barnet reported 44 percent of grades at A* or A, and 76 percent at B or above. Meanwhile, 48 percent of grades attained by Hasmonean boys were A* or A, compared with 45 percent for girls. The Orthodox school in Barnet also reported 67 percent of grades at A* to B for boys and girls. King Solomon High School in Barkingdale said students excelled in religious studies,

Outgoing head girl Ilana Cantor with JFS’ Rachel Fink

all registering an A* to C grade, Spanish, with 83 percent of A* to C grades, and Art, with 81 percent of A* to C grades. Independent Immanuel College reported a record-breaking 90 percent of A* to B grades, the highest proportion ever. It said two thirds of all grades were A* or A, with 30 percent of pupils achieving the top grade. At Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree, 76 of all grades were A* or A. Another 44 percent of grades were A*.

News / Cyprus trial / Teacher sacked / Star mourned

£25k raised for ‘rape’ case teen’s legal costs Lawyers for a 19-year old British woman who alleges she was gang-raped by 12 Israelis in the Cypriot party town of Ayia Napa have cited the Israelis’ behaviour on landing at Ben-Gurion Airport to suggest that she is telling the truth. The woman, who has not been named, has been detained in Cyprus for two months, ever since the incident, while the Israelis were freed just days later. Cypriot police say the woman retracted her story, but her lawyers say she was forced to do so. She was charged with ‘nuisance’ after police said she lied and her Cypriot lawyer walked out. She now has new lawyers and has been bailed to appear before Cypriot magistrates on 2 October. This week legal representatives at the UK-

based firm Justice Abroad issued a statement thanking Brits, Israelis and other nationals for crowd-funding £23,500 for her legal costs, which are expected to exceed £50,000. Among those contributing were rape crisis care groups and Israelis who said they were “ashamed”. The Israelis men, some of whom are due to begin their national army service are understood to have filmed and posted a video of the sexual encounter online, without her consent, in what some have described as “revenge porn”. All 12 were arrested the day after the woman went to the Cypriot police. Five were released soon after, and the remaining seven were released a week later, when the woman allegedly retracted her story.

HEBREW TEACHER IS FIRED OVER FILM A Hebrew teacher in Scotland who showed 12-year-old pupils an 18-rated film about a massacre that took place during the Israel-Lebanon War was lawfully sacked, a tribunal has ruled. Jonathan Guetta, an Ivrit teacher, was dismissed from Mearns Castle High School in May last year after parents complained he had shown children the war film Waltz with Bashir during an after-school class. Guetta, who remains a registered teacher who also teaches French, alleged that he was dismissed from the East Renfrewshire school for reasons of antisemitism but employment tribunal chair Michelle Sutherland disagreed.

Waltz with Bashir was written and directed by Ari Folman, who served in the 1982 war as an infantry soldier and put the film together in order to help him and others piece together the events of the conflict, which involved Israeli teams infiltrating Lebanon in order to kill Palestinians. The film’s depiction of the slaughter of hundreds of innocents has been described as “shocking”. Although Guetta is understood to have stood in front of the screen during disturbing scenes, one father described it as “wholly inappropriate for children” and Sutherland agreed, saying it was “akin to a graphic novel”.

GIFTED SHEILA MOURNED Comic actress Sheila Steafel, known for her starring roles in The Frost Report, How’s Your Father and Radio 4’s Week Ending, has died aged 84. Born in South Africa, Steafel grew up in Lancashire, where she sang at her local synagogue, where her parents directed the choir. She acted with John Cleese, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

Historian Sir Simon Schama has criticised Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s bid to suspend Parliament as a return to “the 17th century” . Schama shared a link to a BBC News story containing Johnson’s letter to MPs, in which Johnson detailed plans to suspend Parliament until 14 October as the 31 October Brexit deadline looms. His tweet contained the accompanying words: “Welcome to the 17th Century everyone”. The Queen approved Johnson’s request to prorogue Parliament, which critics argue will restrict the time available for Brexit opponents to intervene. SURVIVORS’ CONCERN OVER SURGERY MOVE Holocaust survivors in Golders Green have expressed concern after plans to relocate a local surgery to Finchley Memorial Hospital were given the go-ahead. Ravenscroft Medical Centre will be moved to Finchley Memorial Hospital, which is located more than three miles away. NHS Barnet Clinical Commissioning Group (Barnet CCG) expects the move to happen by January, and said patients will be given eight weeks’ notice. Kay Matthews, chief operating officer at Barnet CCG, said the relocation would “save the NHS around £150,000 a year”.

MINISTER DISCUSSES CAMPUS CONCERNS Jewish student representatives said they felt “reassured” after meeting Universities Minister Jo Johnson to discuss antisemitism concerns on campus. Johnson, who held the same role from 2015-18, was given his portfolio back by his brother Boris last month, and said he was pleased to have met representatives of the Jewish groups. They included Board of Deputies vice-president Amanda Bowman and Union of Jewish Students president Esther Offenberg.

Cancer recovery pair wed A couple married in Israel last week after meeting as cancer patients three years ago, writes Mathilde Frot. University students Eliav Marland, 26, and Etti Davidov, 25, tied the knot in Aderet in central Israel. Eliav’s grandfather Leslie Kay is honorary secretary of the Fed welfare group in Manchester and received the British Empire Medal last year. Around 200 guests gathered for the intimate ceremony held in a moshav overlooking the Valley of Elah. “It was amazing and we were really thrilled with how it turned out,” Eliav told Jewish News after the big day. The biology and chemistry student revealed that, while serving in the Israeli navy, he was diagnosed in 2015 with a rare form of cancer that affects the pharynx. He received three months’ treatment, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, before doctors told him he had made a full recovery in May 2016. His fiancé Etti, who studies art, was diagnosed with cancer aged 21 while she served in the army. She underwent surgery to remove the tumour as well as chemotherapy. The two met during a trip to Eilat with cancer charity Zichron Mena-

Eliav Marland, 26, and Etti Davidov, 25, before their wedding

chem. “We were both at the end of our treatment,” Eliav said. ”I was half bald and had lost a lot of weight and she had a boyfriend.” Their paths crossed again in 2017 in Jerusalem during a night out with mutual friends they had met during their treatments. “Etti is such an amazing,

intelligent, beautiful, funny woman and I had no idea she was interested in me, so I didn’t pick up on anything,” Eliav said. Eliav proposed last May in Jerusalem’s botanical gardens. “I set up a picnic blanket with champagne and chocolates and fruit she liked and I proposed,” he said.

“She cried. She was very happy, and it was clear to us both that it was going to happen. We were very happy,” he said. Dating a fellow cancer survivor, he revealed, brings a level of understanding that no one else can give you. “Every cancer survivor I know, no matter how many years after recovery, are still dealing with all sorts of issues. Sometimes it can be mental health or dating problems,” he said. “I cheated the system by dating someone who is also a cancer survivor,” he added. Re-entering the dating scene after recovery poses a number of challenges. “Sometimes it can be a body image problem, if you lost a lot of weight or have very serious scars or bald patches,” he said. “I remember thinking ‘when should you bring up the cancer’, or ‘how do you bring it up?’ and ‘when is it weird to explain whether it is hereditary or not?’” Cancer patients and survivors, Eliav said, should surround themselves with others who have experienced similar challenges. He added: “The friends I have from those circles are the best friends I have. No one understands you like they do.”

Lipman: Jewish roles require Jewish actors Diversity might be a buzzword for everyone else in the acting industry “but it doesn’t seem to work quite the same for our faith”, Maureen Lipman told Jewish News this week, after criticising a new musical that has cast non-Jewish actors in Jewish roles. Lipman, who plays Evelyn Plummer in Coronation Street, was one of 20 signatories of a letter, published in The Stage, denouncing what they called “Jew-face” in the upcoming London production of Falsettos. Falsettos, which opens on Friday at The Other Palace, centres on Jewish identity through the point of view of a Jewish family living in New York. The letter laments the casting of nonJewish actors in Jewish roles in the Tonywinning musical, as well as other productions such as Angels in America, The Lehman Trilogy, Caroline, Or Change and The Merchant of Venice. Falsettos‘ production company Selladoor released a statement saying it did not ask cast members about race or religion. “We have complete trust in our creative and production teams to ensure that this production properly represents all of the wonderful characters represented created by William Finn and James Lapine,” it said.

Other letter signatories included actress Miriam Margolyes, the playwright Stephen Laughton and theatre director Adam Lenson. “It’s quite nice to see me and Miriam Margolyes actually agreeing on something,” Lipman joked in an interview with Jewish News. Lipman said: “The one thing I don’t want to do is whinge. I am a lucky woman and I have a great career. “All I am saying is it’s becoming a fairer world for people of diversity, but it’s going the other way for us. “Nowadays, you wear your ethnicity like women wear their pregnancy bumps. You want to see the bellybutton. Now maybe that’s a good thing but it doesn’t seem to work quite the same for our faith.” Lipman urged industry professionals to cast more Jewish actors in Jewish roles. “They’re not looking hard enough in the bastion of Jewish actors when it comes to the Lehman brothers, when it comes to Shylock,” she said. “If you’re casting Fiddler, if you’re casting The Lehman Brothers, if you’re casting a play which is about Jewish people, then first see every Jewish actor there is. “Don’t make Holocaust survivors played by people who are not Jewish unless they’re gypsies or homosexuals.”

Reubens bites back Salt beef aficionados may rejoice: Reubens’ secret recipe for the meaty classic has been passed down to the kosher institution’s new owners. After its unexpected closure three months ago, condolences poured in for the last kosher restaurant operating in the West End. But Baker Street’s beloved kosher deli has reopened, with a restaurant section expected to open next month. “Salt beef sandwiches will taste exactly the same,” claimed restaurateur Lee Landau, who bought the lease for Reubens last month. “It was part of the deal.”

Special Report / Jewish history

Actors’ tribute to UK’s lost Jews A leading theatre company is running free oral history training as part of a major effort to “discover and document England’s lost Jews”, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Two recent workshops in London have been part of a wider project that’s received Lottery funding to “explore the history of the return of Sephardi Jews to England” in the 17th century. Pascal Theatre Company has been given £80,500 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the two-year programme which investigates and celebrates how Jews began returning to England after their expulsion by King Edward I in 1290. One oral history workshop took place in Bethnal Green while another – specifically for young people aged 14-16 – has been held at Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue. Julia Pascal, the theatre’s director, said oral histories help people learn about how different waves of displacement influenced English life over the centuries. “This includes the experience of Jews who came from Arab countries where many lived peacefully for centuries alongside Muslims,” she said. As well as examining Cromwellian and post-Republican English history, the project looks at 20th century immigrants, including Jews arriving with elements of Arabic cultures in their backgrounds. Sephardi Jews came from the Iberian Pen-

insula, often via Holland, at the invitation of Oliver Cromwell in 1656 and Pascal said this history presented “a thrilling voyage into archives, gravestones and unprocessed documents”. The project is called ‘Discovering and Documenting England’s Lost Jews’ and its findings will inform research, workshops, interviews and a free presentation at the 17th century Novo Cemetery at Queen Mary University of London in London’s East End on 22 September. Pascal said the cemetery event would include “educational performances throughout the day” and would “examine hidden legacies revealing not only Jewish experience but life in Protestant England during the Republic and Restoration”. The project includes oral histories and interviews with descendants of Sephardim to record accounts of flight and safety. “In London schools we share Sephardi legacy and work on film with students at the Resources for Autism Centre,” she said. “Research into these little known archives will provide us with new research to inform this history.” Beyond London there will be outreach and workshops in Manchester and Bath, and the discoveries will be recorded and uploaded onto the website as a resource. “Next year our film crew will show elements from interviews, performance,

research and discoveries made by us at a major London museum,” said Pascal. “We will also host public talks by a diversity of members of the Sephardi community.”  For further information about the scheme go to: www.lostjews.org.uk

Jacob’s rite of passage A youngster has celebrated his barmitzvah in the German city from which his grandfather fled before he could mark the milestone, writes Mathilde Frot. Jacob Rumens observed his coming of age on Monday in Jever, in a Shoah museum built on the ground of the local synagogue, which was destroyed during Kristallnacht. “When Jacob spoke you could have heard a pin drop,” his proud mother, Lori Gale-Rumens, 58, told Jewish News. “Everyone was awestruck. We’re doing it in Jever because my father couldn’t do it there; that’s what is so amazing about it. My dad would think it’s fantastic. It’s something so good that came out of something so bad.” Jacob’s grandfather, the late Frank Gale, née Fritz Groschler, escaped to Dovercourt, in Leeds, on the Kindertransport at the age of 12, with his brother Hans, who was 15. There, Gale worked various jobs, including as an ice cream vendor, on a Hoffman press and in a factory, before he moved to London aged 18 and joined the British Army. His father, Julius Groschler, ran a cowhide supply business in Jever and was a warden of the local shul. He was deported with his wife Hedwig in 1943 to Theresienstadt, and they were murdered a year later in Auschwitz-Birkenau. “They were prominent people in the town,” Gale-Rumens said. “They lost their homes and factories.” Around 30 people attended the ceremony in Jever at the Gröschlerhaus. The museum,

founded by local history teacher Hartmut Peters and pastor Volker Landig, was named after the Groschler family and features an audio recording of Gale and even a mezuzah that belonged to him. Gale-Rumens said: “The people in this small town have made the effort to make the Gröschlerhaus in memory of the people who perished, in memory of my grandfather.” Her father, who died in 1997 before the museum was built, returned to Jever several times after the war. “In the late 1980s, Gale was among a number of survivors invited for a civic reception in Jever’s schloss. Gale-Rumens added: “My father was never bitter and he always spoke warmly of where he came from. Even when I was a child, I knew the name Jever.”

Sir David warns of Euro ‘lunacy’ Sir David Attenborough has invoked the Shoah in response to a question on Brexit and the changing political forces sweeping Europe, recalling how his family took in two Jewish refugees. In an interview with Italian journal La Repubblica last week, Attenborough (pictured) avoided saying how he had voted in the Brexit referendum, but warned of the “lunacy” overcoming Europe in the run-up to the Second World War. “I am old enough to remember the last war,” said the 93-year-old naturalist. “We had two German Jewish refugees living in our house. Mobs of people are a very, very ugly sight. When I see people losing all reason and just becoming enraged, that’s not a pretty sight.” He said he was concerned for the future, and that the UK’s political system had got itself into “an absurd mess”, warning: “I hope people remember the lunacy that took over Europe years ago… Dreadful.” During the war, Attenborough’s Methodist father Frederick was principal of University College in Leicester, and the family took in Irene and Helga Bejach, two Jewish sisters who had arrived on the Kindertransport. One gave the 12-yearold David a piece of Baltic amber containing preserved insects caught in the resin tens of thousands of years ago. RACIST PROFILES FLOOD TWITTER

Fake social media profiles impersonating Jews and promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories have flooded Twitter after a post on the website 4chan. The post author urges readers to “create a massive movement of fake Jewish profiles on Facebook, Twitter etc”, with the goal being to avoid censorship by social media companies, and to spread conspiracy theories about Jewish involvement in the slave trade, the global economy, mass media and the porn industry. “You will have the benefit of labeling anyone an antisemite who disagrees with you,” the anonymous post suggested two weeks ago. The lightly moderated online messaging website has developed a reputation for serving as a platform for malicious posts and online harassment schemes. Since then, Twitter users who track Jewish content have documented fake accounts created recently. The journalist Yair Rosenberg, who reported the 4chan post on Twitter, shared screenshots of accounts impersonating Jews he said were created after the 4chan post. The accounts use photos of real and purported Jews and stereotypically Jewish names. “They promote antisemitic and anti-Israel content,” Rosenberg said. A Twitter spokesperson said it was looking into the ?? profiles.

Trump: Jewish democrats disloyal Donald Trump has repeated his claim that US voters are being “disloyal” when they back Democrats, expanding on remarks made the previous day, despite criticism from Jewish groups. “If you vote for a Democrat, you’re being disloyal to Jewish people, and you’re being very disloyal to Israel,” Trump said last Wednesday. He also

said of Rashida Tlaib and other congresswomen known as The Squad: “They are antisemities, they are against Israel.” Tlaib “had a plan to greatly embarrass Israel”, he added. Last Tuesday, Trump had said at a news conference in the Oval Office: “Any Jewish people that vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.” The comments drew immediate

criticism from Jewish groups, and debates about the target of the ‘disloyalty’. Jewish leaders expressed concern that Trump was levelling a charge against American Jews of “dual loyalty” to the US and Israel, a classic antisemitic stereotype and called his remarks “dangerous” and “divisive” and displaying “textbook antisemitism”. Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said: “To single out Jewish voters and accuse them of the ancient slur of ‘disloyalty’ – when antisemitic violence is on the rise – is reckless.”

THREE POLICEMEN DEAD IN GAZA CITY EXPLOSION

Iran jails Briton for 12 years for ‘spying for Mossad’

Two explosions ripped through police checkpoints in Gaza City on Tuesday, killing three policemen and wounding two passers by, Hamas officials claim. The terror group’s interior ministry said the first explosion caused two deaths. An hour later, a second blast occurred across town on a main coastal road, killing another officer. Blood stains covered the road and debris from a damaged law enforcement trailer was scattered about. Police were deployed heavily in the area, blocking the street and directing traffic as ambulances arrived on the scene to take the body away. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attacks, but the deadly blasts are reminiscent of previous bloody rounds of infighting between Hamas and more radical Salafi groups that believe the terror group is too lenient in imposing Islamic norms on society. Israeli said it was unaware of any action in the Gaza Strip.

A British-Iranian man has been jailed for 12 years in Iran for alleged ties to Mossad. Anousheh Ashoori, who was held in Tehran in August 2017, was one of three people handed lengthy sentences on security and spying charges, judiciary spokesman GholaAlso jailed: Aras Amiri mhossein Esmaili said on Tuesday. In comments broadcast on state TV, Esmaili said Ashoori was jailed for his ties to Mossad, along with Ali Johari, who was also sentenced to 12 years in prison. A 10-year sentence was also upheld against Aras Amiri, an Iranian national who was working for the British Council in London, for allegedly spying on cultural activities in Iran, Esmaili added. She was detained in March last year when she returned to Iran to visit her elderly grandmother.

Special Report / Israel decides... again With 1 9 days until this year’s second Israeli election, most voters seem apathetic. If analysts are to be believed, the smallest margins that in April gave Likud an advantage may have dissipated. The balance, if true, has swung slightly left, meaning the two big blocs – right and centreleft – are now tied. One seat could make all the difference and, since April, there have been several mergers, meaning bigger pulling power for fewer parties. Once again, it’s all up for grabs...

Such is the oneman reality of Israel’s largest right-wing party these days. In most other countries, Benjamin Netanyahu would be an electoral liability, but polls repeatedly show that Israelis still prefer him to lead the government, followed closely by former military chief Benny Gantz at Blue and White. Since April’s election, the centrist four-seat Kulanu party has folded and its leader, Moshe Kahlon, has joined Likud, presumably bringing votes. ‘King Bibi’ has also now become the longest-serving prime minister in Israeli history, surpassing David Ben-Gurion. His status and knack of peddling hard to the right just before the ballot should see him match April’s 35 seats.

Israel decides... again / Special Report

ave the upper hand? BLUE AND WHITE

In April the then-new party won 35 seats, tying with Likud, but it didn’t have enough parliamentary friends to be asked to form a government. Often labelled ‘centrist’, B&W has since hardened its stance. At the Israel-Gaza border in early August, joint leader Benny Gantz said: “The next time something happens here, we’ll make sure the round (of fighting) is the final round… We’ll pound the whole area with fire. We’ll operate on the ground whenever we want, where we want, as much as we want, and for as long as we want.” Yair Lapid, the party’s other joint leader, echoed Gantz, saying: “On our watch, Hamas won’t get suitcases full of dollars. They’ll get a guided missile right into their home.” Peaceniks’ hopes now rest on this being a bluff in order to win rightwing votes from under Netanyahu’s nose.

LABOR-GESHER

Labor got annihilated in April. This once-great party of the Israeli left, which governed for decades and led the Opposition until recently, sank to just six seats, a fifth of the Knesset. Its hapless leader Avi Gabbay, whose pre-election antics led to a drain in support, and who appeared ready to enter a Netanyahu-led coalition after the vote, much to the chagrin of Labor members, was finally kicked out this summer

and replaced by past chairman Amir Peretz. Seen as a dinosaur by the party’s largely young following, 67-year-old Peretz is playing on his experience, including as defence minister in 2006. He has also agreed to run with Gesher, a small party set up by former Yisrael Beitenu politician Orli Levi-Abekasis, who fell out with Lieberman. The combined group could get eight seats, more if it inspires people.

DEMOCRATIC UNION

If this new political entity does better than expected, it could herald the return to frontline politics of former prime minister and ex-Israel Defence Forces chief of staff Ehud Barak. He is helping to headline the merged group, together with former Labor leadership hopeful Stav Shaffir and the left-wing Meretz party, which has won five to six seats in every recent election. Meretz chairman Nitzan Horowitz tops the billing, while Shaffir, who brings her

own following and has urged Israeli Arabs to “see us as your allies”, is second. Pollsters say their combined weight could win up to nine seats; others say that seems optimistic. If they were to win 10 seats, however, tenth-placed Barak would return to the Knesset, a sight few ever expected.

ORTHODOX PARTIES

Simple maths says higher birth rates among Israel’s strictly Orthodox population means more Charedi voters and more parliamentary seats for the two Orthodox parties, Shas and United Torah Judaism (UTJ). In April, they won eight seats each, whereas in 2015 they won seven and six respectively. Both parties are used to sitting in Netanyahu governments and he is used to relying on their support to form coalitions. Few expect anything to change.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Monumental decision Continued from page 1 Tory MP Sir Edward Leigh, who lives next to the site, is a prime mover among opponents, branding the memorial a “gimmick”. He’s tabled 125 Parliamentary questions about it at an estimated cost of £20,000 to the taxpayer. Westminster City council’s major planning applications committee was expected to make a final decision on 24 September. It will now be delayed until later in the year. A letter from the council to Balls and Pickles last week warned the application was heading towards an unfavourable recommendation “over objections about the impact on the local area”. It is a matter of intense concern and profound regret that nimbyism and red tape could deprive Britain, which stood alone against the Nazi threat for two long years, of a Holocaust memorial as iconic as Berlin’s. A place of contemplation and commemoration that would be as much about safeguarding the future as memorialising the past. A place that would send a mighty message about our values, principles and democracy. With days to go until the council’s monumental decision, the message could not be clearer or more heartfelt: Westminster’s Holocaust memorial must take its rightful place in the heart of our nation and in the hearts of every man, woman and child who witnesses it for decades – if not centuries – to come.

However, I was delighted to hear that the burial society in Israel was instructed by Chief Rabbi David Lau to refuse the burial of the mother of a man (who lives in the US) refusing to grant his wife a divorce after

10 years. In Israel, the dayanim and rabbis through the court system can imprison the individual until a get is given or accepted. Outside Israel, the Beth Din does not hold the same authority and can only ostracise the man from synagogues or certain privileges such as receiving an aliyah to the Torah. The ketubah (marriage document) should perhaps contain obligations on both sides should the marriage break down.

We remember those murdered The UK is more than 2,000 miles from Israel. However, we, as part of the Jewish people share a common interest, even if we don’t share the ongoing onslaught of stabbings, shootings, mown down by automobiles and now explosive devices. Now it is not only Jews in Israel that suffer, as Jew-hatred has been and still is part of Christian and Islamic culture. For those of us who attend religious

services and others, is it not time for us to remember the names of those brutally murdered, such as the recent case of 17-yearold Rina Shnerb? Perhaps we can show our grief of further Jews being murdered by Islamic and extreme left and right terrorists by naming them immediately before kaddish is recited?

Afforestation, noun, a-for-ə-’stā-shən

Definition: the act of establishing a new forest When it comes to tackling climate change, nothing beats the humble tree. These woody sponges suck harmful carbon emissions out of the atmosphere and lock them away safely in their trunks. But what’s better than a tree? A whole forest of them! We would know. JNF UK has been planting them for a long time, helping to make Israel the only country to enter the 21st century with a net gain in trees. And while we’ve branched out into other areas – like education, welfare and culture – afforestation is still close to our heart. Our urban forests make towns and cities across the desert bloom. So if you’re looking for an answer that really gets to the root of the problem, take a leaf out of our book and plant some trees in Israel!

Three badly behaved men, only two named JENNI FRAZER

M

ost readers, I suppose, will be familiar with the sitcom Men Behaving Badly. But, sadly, what is grist for TV comedy is often far removed from amusing in real life. Unfortunately, we are overwhelmed with examples of men behaving not just badly but appallingly, every week. Let us start with a man named Meir Kin. Mr Kin is currently based in America and came to public attention last week over the funeral arrangements of his mother, who was due to be buried in Israel. Mr Kin — a member of an American Orthodox community — was said to feel unable to come to Israel for the funeral in case he was apprehended by the Israeli police. This is because, allegedly, for 15 years he has refused to grant his ex-wife, Lonna, a get. In this regard he was apparently backed by his late mother, although one might

imagine that any normal woman would do anything and everything to solve the plight of the agunot, or chained wives. Mr Kin, who has meanwhile managed to take a second wife despite not issuing a get to his first, was told firmly by Israel’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau that the Bet Din would not bury his mother unless he set Lonna Kin free. Supposedly, he agreed and the delayed funeral went ahead. Regrettably, however, Meir Kin did not issue a get, and now claims that a) he never agreed to any such deal in the first place and b)Rabbi Lau and his Bet

THERE ARE WAY TO MANY MEN WHO THINK THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH SHOCKING ACTS

Din are corrupt and Rabbi Lau is related by marriage to Lonna Kin, and so has a dog in the fight. Readers who have made it this far need to be aware that Rabbi Lau has denied any familial relationship with Lonna Kin. Somebody is intent on misleading the public here and though I am not saying it has never happened within the rabbinate, I can’t help feeling Meir Kin has pulled the wool over many eyes. Except for money, there is no reason for him not to release Lonna, not least since he has re-married. Or is she expected to subsidise his second marriage as the price for her freedom? Our second man behaving badly, inexorably, is, or was, the repellent Jeffrey Epstein. Nobody, surely, can be in any doubt about Epstein’s repulsive behaviour and the fact that before his prison cell suicide on 10 August, he had already served time in jail, after being convicted in 2008 of procuring and molesting under-age girls. Leaving aside what one-time friends

Prince Andrew and Ehud Barak did or did not see during their acquaintanceship with Epstein, he now presents an unenviable problem for the New York rabbinate. Where do you bury a man generally agreed to be a bad person? According to the New York-based Forward, the Talmud stipulates that “we do not bury a wicked person next to a righteous one” — and that’s without taking into account what one does about burying suicides. I have a third man behaving badly this week, who is a public figure of sorts in the UK, but the account of whose behaviour I only know from his ex-wife. If only half of what she says is true, this person should be shunned by all decent people — but I will not identify him because I only have half a story. Suffice it to say that there are way too many men — even in the 21st century — who believe they can get away with shocking and unacceptable behaviour. This is real life, not a TV comedy.

A tale of two people bonded by upheaval FIYAZ MUGHAL DIRECTOR, FAITH MATTERS

U

gandan Asians are the distant cousins of Jews. Alright, not genetically, but certainly behaviourally. As a Ugandan Asian expelled by Idi Amin, all I knew in the early part of my life was displacement. Displacement by Ugandans and blackon- black racism, then displacement from the UK, which gave us Ugandan Asians a place where we could call home, after much political skulduggery because of fears around immigration. While many Ugandan Asians stayed in the UK, my father felt the racism and took us to Kenya, where we lived for 10 years, only to see a coup attempt turn parts of the population against Asians. The racism of Asians “not being African enough” surfaced again and, with real fears to our lives, we left to finally settle in this country, which has been my home for 36 years. Ugandan Asians were some of the hardest

working and most entrepreneurial communities in Africa. Such was their determination to succeed through hard work that when they were expelled, the Ugandan economy collapsed and would not recover for 30 years. Highly adaptable and resourceful, when Ugandan Asians were expelled, they were stripped of their assets. I remember my mother telling me that we were only allowed five shillings, (about £1), and the baby milk my mother carried for me, when we boarded planes for the UK. Many had left with the clothes they were wearing, only to arrive into a climate that was as alien to them as Mars. The experience of being migrants, liable to be turned upon at any point in life, meant that education became the valuable resource in which Ugandan Asians invested. I remember my father saying to me: “They may take anything from you, but they can’t take your mind and your skills.” How many times have I heard that said within Jewish communities; there is a desire to stay alive and keep the flame of identity alive by being ready to move and look for safety. Another similarity was the fact that

IT IS THIS FLEXIBLE MINDSET, HARD WORK, ENTREPREUNERISM AND PLURALISM THAT BINDS US Ugandan Asians carried with them a flexibility of mindset where pluralism was central to their lives. Religion was not the focal point; it was one identity among others, meaning they held onto their culture and customs, but were adaptable and enjoyed all of the cultural events in Uganda and Kenya. Theirs was a life of moderation and not extremes, where sometimes cultural elements melded with local customs and traditions. For example, in Kenya, I remember an Islam, Sufi in its tradition that had melded with animism, something that many practised. Mention that today, and

some 17-year-old British Muslim will call you a kaffir or unbeliever, such is the twisted rhetoric that has taken root in this country. They would not even know what Islam is, but are happy to make statements of takfirism (or apostasy) against other Muslims. It is this flexibility of mindset, hard work, entrepreneurism and sense of pluralism that binds many Ugandan Asians to British Jewish communities. These natural alliances have not been utilised, since it is easy to show the world that there is religious harmony in an age of Instagram by taking a picture with an imam and rabbi, with no real reflection on what binds the two at a cultural and value level. I would even go so far as to say that no real attempt has been made to bridge the two communities who share so much, and the children of the Ugandan émigrés have forgotten much of the past. So my call to the leadership within Jewish communities is this. In the desire to build bridges, remember the underpinning values that form the foundation of the bridge. nor Painting a veneer that just looks good does not mean the structure is sound.

Trump’s Israel support won’t win Jewish votes ALEX BRUMMER

and Trump it is the real thing. When Trump tweeted that two Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib, who is of Palestinian origin and and Ilhan Omar, should be barred from a visit to Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories the Israeli prime minister agreed. After a public fuss Netanyahu reversed himself and said that Tlaib should be allowed to visit her grandmother on the West Bank. But the damage had been done. Interestingly an academic Jewish American friend, who despises Trump, seems to hold Tlaib and Omar – who advocate boycott of Israel – in similar disregard. Trump has given some American Jews the opportunity to rethink the relationship with the Jewish state. There has been evidence for some time that on university campuses the affinity of American students to Israel has been stretched. But as the liberal minded New York Times reported recently Trump has managed to revive Jewish leftist sentiments. These are Jewish groups who believe that basic human rights are more important than the US-Israel relationship. On 11 August, Tisha B’Av – the most mournful day in the Jewish

onald Trump thinks he has a divine right to Jewish support as the 2020 campaign for the White House heats up. In recent comments on the subject he suggests Jews leaning towards the Democrats (the traditional repository of votes for middle-of-the-road Jewish voters) will be showing ‘great disloyalty’ and a ‘lack of knowledge.’ Trump’s confidence in the Jewish vote largely stems from his unrelenting support of Israel. Almost every American leader of recent times has pledged to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. But only Trump has delivered. The US president is fond of declaring he has a special relationship with all manner of leaders around the world, from President Macron in France to the Chinese President Xi Jinping. But in many ways this is no more than what Sigmund Freud identified as a cupboard or false love. In the case of Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel

THE DEMOCRATIC FIELD IS LACKING A CANDIDATE FOR JEWS TO RALLY AROUND calendar – more than a thousand protesters (including 12 rabbis) occupied the Amazon Book store in New York. They were protesting Amazon’s technical support for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They liken the internment of immigrants in camps on the Mexican border to Hitler’s concentration camps. As unpleasant as these centres may be, the parallel is crude. But it shows how Trump has helped isolated Jewish groups on the left to argue that the idea that anti-Zionism is the equivalent of antisemitism is false. What America’s middle-of-the-road Jews want is a Democrat candidate in the White

House who is less friendly to Europe’s new right such as Viktor Orban in Hungary, supports traditional liberal values and adopts sensible policies towards Israel. The current regime in Washington largely is guided by the hard-right socially conservative evangelical movements rather than mainstream Jewish leadership. Even the normally ‘Israel right or wrong’ Aipac had trouble with Trump’s intervention on the Congresswomen’s Israel trip. The huge Democratic field has lacked an obvious leader for the Jewish community to rally around. Bernie Sanders, who gave Hillary Clinton such a fright in 2016 and is Jewish, has never been a devoted friend of the Jewish state. It is impossible to say at this stage in the race, which does not get underway until the Iowa caucuses in January, who among the Democrats will emerge from the pack. What is clear is that Trump’s perceived undying support for Israel may not be able to command majority Jewish support. Indeed, his association with racist policies has incentivised Jewish activists to work against him. No recent president has been so divisive for America’s Jews.

1 ELI FLIES HIGH

A 90-year-old Kindertransport refugee jumped from 13,000ft to raise more than £7,000 for Jewish Care. Eli Abt, a retired architect and planner from Finchley, said it was “an amazing experience!”, adding: “I had total confidence in my instructor, co-owner of the airfield. The plane climbed two and a half miles from where we jumped in tandem and dived like birds at 120mph, arms outstretched. Not to be missed,” he said. “Would I do it again? Definitely. For Jewish Care? Without a doubt, this is an admirable cause worth flying for. However this time I would expect others to join me! Any takers?”

CANINE COMPANIONS

A total of 38 members of Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue (EHRS) celebrated the approach of the first of Elul with a community dog walk in Cannons Park. Walkers were accompanied by 20 dogs, ranging in size from Chihuahua to Alsatian. Senior Rabbi of EHRS Mark Goldsmith, said: “It was as if the dogs were celebrating being out together as a pack. We spoke about how our animals enable us to calm down from the pressures of the day, provide companionship and that rare thing – unconditional love. It was also a great way for members of the synagogue to get to know each other.”

3 QUALITY TIME

More than 100 seriously ill children taking part in Camp Simcha’s Keshet summer day scheme enjoyed activities including bowling, crazy golf and outings to the aquarium. Daniel Gillis, Camp Simcha’s head of services, said: “We run a varied programme, which includes days just for the ill child where they each have their own dedicated volunteer and also family days for the parents and siblings as well. These organised outings mean families get to spend time together, without worrying about logistics and medical issues so they can focus on having a great day out.” Pictured, from front to back, are Charlotte Elias, Benji Elias, Adina Shaya, Dina Lea Storz and Michal Kedourie at Lost Jungle Adventure Golf in Edgware.

THE HATZOLA DINNER WAS A BIG SUCCESS – THE WHOLE EVENING WAS MEANINGFUL & MEMORABLE

9

Brothers Ziggy and Keanu, aged nine and eight, raised more than £1,000 for cancer charity Zichron Menachem by chopping their long locks to make wigs for children who lost their hair during cancer treatment. The two were inspired by their 11-year-old cousin Roi, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour two years ago. Ziggy and Keanu – whose sister Jaime also donated hair three years ago – had their haircuts at salon Overgrown, with moral support from Roi, who flew in from Israel for the occasion.

10

Charity GIFT held its first “young professional packathon” at its centre in Hendon. More than 60 young professionals crammed into the warehouse and packed food parcels for 250 families supported by GIFT. Participants said they would return to volunteering events to support the charity in the future. Jonah Cohen, who attended the event, said: “In an era of selfabsorption, a shining light emerged in the suburbs of Hendon, when 65 young professionals came together at the GIFT warehouse to create an atmosphere of ‘giving’, as they prepared food for the families GIFT supports and discussed how they would contribute to the community.”

7SPECIAL TRIP

Have you had a recent simcha? Send your picture to picturedesk@thejngroup.com

Nearly 140 Israel children with cancer visited London on the trip of a lifetime with charity Zichron Menachem. Participants, joined by a full medical team, staff and volunteers, spent eight days in the capital, where they toured historical sites and other attractions. Zichron Menachem was founded 30 years ago by Chaim and Miri Ehrental after their oldest child, Menachem, died of leukaemia aged 15. It has helped thousands of families since its foundation, running a day centre in Jerusalem for children with cancer and their healthy

siblings to learn and have fun, organising free camps, arranging respite for parents of ill children, organising donations of hair to provide children with customised wigs and more.

8 TECHNION SUPPORT Around a dozen young professionals helped raise more than £2,000 for Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, based in Haifa. The event, which was organised by Young Technion and the events company Juicy Events, was held at a bar in Camden. All money raised will go to the Israeli university’s student hardship fund.

9 PEAK EXCITEMENT

More than 600 children took part in Bnei Akiva UK’s summer programme, which featured new activities for children from Year 3 and up, including a trip for Year 10 students to South Africa. Pictured are participants on the youth movement’s Year 7 camp Aleph Chalutzi enjoying a group activity in the Peak District.

10 HATZOLA EVENT

Around 180 people attended a spectacular fundraising dinner at Edgware United Synagogue, raising £3,000 for Hatzola Edgware, a charity based in north London that provides a lifesaving ambulance and medical service. Guests were entertained by popular magicians Rabbi Geoffrey Shisler and Graham Jolie. The fundraising appeal was led by David Rabson, pictured. Rabbi David Lister of Edgware United Synagogue said: “The Hatzola dinner was a resounding success. There was a huge turnout on the night from the community who enjoyed excellent entertainment and catering, and the presentation by Hatzola made the whole evening even more meaningful and memorable.’’

PERFORMANCE!

t might seem surprising, but once women know who Suzi Weiss-Fischmann is, they remove their footwear and ask her to guess what colour varnish is on their toes. The co-founder of OPI, the well-known, global luxury nail care brand, gets accosted pretty much everywhere she goes, but the strangest venue was in a baseball field. Laughing, she tells me: “I was on the bleachers with the other mums, watching our sons, and they said, ‘what colour am I wearing?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know!” But the “First Lady of Nails” does know a lot about colour, for she was the creative brains behind OPI (working on colours, trends, marketing and advertising) and, despite selling it to Coty in 2010, remains a brand ambassador and in charge of naming colours. But before becoming, in her own words, the “number one professional salon brand in the world”, OPI – which stands for Odontorium Products, Incoporated – was actually founded as a dental supply company in 1981 by Suzi and her sister Miriam’s former husband, George Schaeffer. As Suzi reveals in her recently-published book, I’m Not Really a Waitress (named after OPI’s top-selling nail colour), George noticed that nail technicians and salon owners were buying dental acrylics in order to make their own artificial nail extensions. So the pair researched the market and won over their LA clients. Grafting all hours, they branched out into ancillary products, including nail polish removers, brushes and files. But Suzi saw another gap in the market: nail colour. While there were coloured varnishes on sale, she says the brands were not connecting to women on an emotional level. “OPI made nail polish personal and relatable to women – with seasonal colours and iconic names,” she explains, pointing to colours with such exotic names as Don’t Bossa Nova Me Around, Cajun Shrimp and Kyoto Pearl. The company aimed to give every woman a bit of luxury, she says, and it stayed relevant through innovations and collaborations with some of the biggest stars of film, television, music, and sport. “We realised we could change the whole category of nail polish to make it much more than just polish – a way to self-express and inspire women to colour. The nail plate is the world’s smallest canvas. Nothing was

The family fled in 1966 when she was 10. “We had a very nice house. My father was a butcher and my mother worked in a store – government owned, of course. It was a good life but also very scary – we always lived in fear,” she recalls. Laszlo was often taken by the secret police at night in an attempt to persuade him to join the communist party. When he refused, he was jailed, usually only for a night. It was when her mother was taken and kept for four days that Laszlo started making plans to flee. “Me and George – who had come to the US in 1956 during the Hungarian revolution – were always so grateful for what we had,” she says. “My dad always said if you give, you get, and the first thing was to help our employees and their children.” Aged 19, Magda had been sent to Auschwitz, where she spent 18 months. “My mum was with her two younger brothers and her mother on the train. she was young and strong and able to work.” Family life is paramount to Suzi and her husband, George Fischmann, who was born in Guatemala, after his parents left Czechoslovakia during the Second World War. No matter how busy her schedule, Suzi still strived to attend shows and sporting events and did her fair share of the carpool – even if she was always the last to arrive at pick-up. Judaism is extremely important to the couple, who gave their daughter and son a traditional upbringing. “We observe all the holidays and the kids grew up with a lot of traditions that I hope they will pass onto their children,” enthuses Suzi. She sees her book as another way of giving back, filled as it is with business advice and inspiration for the next generation of entrepreneurs. “It’s about living a meaningful life,” she explains. “It’s ok to have nice things, but it’s also very important to help others who are less fortunate.”  I’m Not Really A Waitress: How One Woman Took Over the Beauty Industry by Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, is published by Seal Press, priced £20 (hardback)

Torah For Today

SEDRA Re’eh BY RABBI BORUCH BOUDILOVSKY Succot is not another building block in the Judaic world of ideas. Unlike other festivals, Succot does not highlight a unique idea. Pesach encourages liberty, Shavuot celebrates Torah, Rosh Hashanah highlights accountability, and Yom Kippur facilitates harmony between ourselves and God. Rather than contributing an idea to the final Judaic product, Succot is the final product itself. Earning liberty, accepting the Torah, living a life of accountability and harmony all add up to Succot! There are two cycles of biblical Jewish festivals. One is the cycle of the three festivals; Pesach, Shavuot and Succot. The second consists of the festivals belonging to the seventh month of the Jewish year; Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Succot. Both lead to and culminate with Succot. As the final product of the festival journey, Succot invites us to live in the idealistic instead of the realistic, thereby enabling happiness and joy. Indeed, Succot is the festival of happiness, Chag Simchateynu. As such, in biblical and contemporary times, Succot evenings are celebrated with music, singing, and dancing. During the day, we praise and appreciate God by reciting Hallel with the four species (which represent our livelihood). During the week, we happily live and socialise in a succah, which represents a simple home – all we really need. Jewish festivals introduce and contribute ideas that combine to inspire a life of profound joy, genuine appreciation, trust in the future, love of our Torah, elegant simplicity, and celebration. Succot embodies all these virtues to create a celebration of life.

What does the Torah say about: Refusing to vaccinate your children BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS I was recently approached by someone on Twitter who wished to preach his version of Jewish theology at me. Antisemitism, he claimed, was God’s way of telling us we are not safe in Britain. That’s one viewpoint. And perhaps disease is also God testing our faith. Rational approaches to Judaism reject such a supine fatalistic approach approach and encourage us to fight hatred and disease. The latter is done using vaccination. Recent statistics show elements of the Charedi community to have resisted vaccination of their children with MMR. This is in fact contrary to halacha. The halacha is that we avoid danger to life and limb, wherever possible. It’s a very basic doctrine of Judaism – our rabbis tell us

we are even allowed to break Shabbat to save lives. In the instance the threat is not imminent, we do not need to desecrate the Shabbat. We simply book into a clinic to get our children vaccinated. Failure may not be serious to our own

THE SCIENCE IS CLEAR. WE CAN WIPE OUT THESE DISEASES WITH VACCINATION

child but measles kills, mumps emasculates and rubella deforms and maims unborn children. I do not believe that failure to vaccinate, thereby causing death and misery, is an effective way of controlling population numbers. The only rationale for those avoiding vaccination is fake science (the Wakefield paper is utter fraud) or a misplaced faith in the protection of Hashem, which would preclude any form of medical intervention whatsoever, which is obviously a false route. The science is clear. We can wipe out these diseases with vaccination. The risks to any individual from a vaccination are vanishingly small – less than that of crossing a busy road. Claims of autism and other side effects are fakery and alarmism. The risk is non-vaccination – and the results of this failure mean in some parts of New York and Stamford Hill children are being maimed, going deaf and even dying.  Rabbi Zvi Solomons serves JCoB, the Orthodox Jewish Community in Reading

The Bible Says What? ‘Dirty laundry comes before saving lives’

What are the ethical implications of developing a ‘cure’ for menopause?

BY RABBI SANDRA KVIAT Two people are travelling through a desert. One of them is carrying a bottle with just enough water to sustain one person. Whoever drinks the water will live; the other person will die. If both people drink half the water, both will die. What should they do? The ancient rabbis argue the owner of the bottle should drink it, using a biblical command from Leviticus that one should first save one’s own life, before helping others. In another rabbinic story, we have two cities, one with a water supply, the other without. As before, the ancient rabbis argue that the inhabitants of the city with the well have the right to the water before the other city – but add that if the well is only for animals, then the other city’s inhabitants have rights to the water. Rabbi Yosi, however, disagreed. He said the animals and even doing the laundry takes precedent over the lives of people in the other city

LE

(Tosefta, Bava Metzia 11:33–37). American Progressive Rabbi Jill Jacobs quotes a modern-day rabbinic study group where her colleagues were aghast that Rabbi Yosi’s view is upheld in Jewish tradition, until one pointed out: “We all do this all the time. I take my kids to water parks, even though I know there are people in the world who don’t have water to drink.” This story highlights the competing responsibilities we all face, between our own needs, local needs and global needs. Perhaps all of us are a bit more like Rabbi Yosi than we’d like to think, for we do choose our ‘laundry’ over the basic survival of those further away. As we reflect in the weeks before the High Holy Days, let us each take some time to consider how we help others, whether they are our neighbour or the stranger in another land.

Rabbi Sandra Kviat serves Crouch End Chavurah

BY RABBI MIRIAM BERGER It’s always the same outcry when there is an advancement in the medical world: the sudden fear that because we have the ability to do something, it will be used irresponsibly. Recent news of Professor Simon Fishel’s pioneering medical breakthrough to delay the onset of menopause is no exception. Before we women say no more to the symptoms that might come with “the change”, such as hot flushes and uncontrollable moods, we should agree these medical delay tactics are not to be used lightly, and may not work for everyone. My own hope in medical science included seeing IVF as the expensive “cure” to secondary infertility , which unfortunately left me deeply disappointed. My mother-inlaw lost her fight with leukaemia despite stem cell transplants being heralded as the “cure”. Just because something should work doesn’t mean it always will.

SALE

As a rabbi thinking of whether medical advancements are ethical, I have to deal with a familiar challenge: “We shouldn’t play God.” My only answer comes in the form of one of the oldest jokes – the one with three people in a boat with a leak who are left adrift in the middle of the ocean. When two are saved, the most pious of the three finds themselves at the Gates of Heaven addressing the Holy One, asking how their prayers could be ignored in the moment of grave danger. God simply replies: “I sent you a life jacket and a rescue helicopter –

what else am I to do?!” However, I fear that with every new breakthrough, the much-loved NHS model becomes more unsustainable. It is a constant mathematical equation: does the cost of the new cure outweigh the costs of treatments that deal with the symptoms? When they don’t, it has added to the lottery of who will be awarded this respite and who will be left suffering. With so many menopausal symptoms being those reported, but hard to quantify and measure, it may just be another treatment available only to a select few. When women are suffering, many in silence, we cannot question whether this is a wonderful advancement. We can, however, ask how we will pay for it, and how can we ensure it remains available to every woman, so it becomes a medical breakthrough to help those with the greatest need. Rabbi Miriam Berger serves Finchley Reform Synagogue

HARRISON GALGUT PHOTOGRAPHER

EDIT6 Dear Harrison I’m starting to plan a special occasion and it looks like I’ll be spending a lot of money. Do I really need to hire professionals? Rebecca Dear Rebecca I might be a little biased as I am a professional photographer. Your question reminded me of Andy Cubin

MBE’s statement: “Today, wedding photography is saturated with thousands of people (not photographers) who have invested in a DSLR [camera] and go out without any education or traininmg and offer their services at appealingly low prices to the budget-concious couple to be. And many of these couples fall into the trap only to be disappointed at the final results on what should have been their most important of days.” You have not told me what your event is; however, we can gear the way we approach the photography to suit the occasion. A wedding will require a different flavour to what would be expected for a 90th birthday celebration. A bar or batmitzvah is likely to be more relaxed than the formal

portraits of a wedding, while the 90th birthday would probably focus on family across generations. Bar and batmitzvahs are often themed events. As a professional, I have the knowledge and ability to fully exploit techniques at my disposal to bring to life your theme. A good amateur can produce good photographs, while a professional is more likely to seize the mood and bring to life the event, capturing the emotions. We also produce professionally crafted gifts, such as high quality albums (a perfect gift for grandparents), framed prints, calendars as well as provide facilities such as wall art, for example, canvas wraps and mosaic frames.
