I can’t thank my constituents enough for the relationship we have grown and what we have achieved.” Berger vowed to continue standing up to Boris Johnson’s government, which she insisted “is intent on taking us to the no-deal Brexit precipice which would result in serious consequences for jobs and livelihoods across the country”. Luciana Berger will aim to unseat Conservative Mike Freer in Finchley and Golders Green at the next General Election after she was unanimously adopted as the Lib Dems’ candidate for the seat. The Liverpool Wavertree MP, who walked out of the Labour Party earlier this year over its response to antisemitism, was one of the founding members of Change UK but joined the Lib Dems earlier this month, citing its “unequivocal” stance against Brexit. Berger has made it clear she did not set out to be characterised as a
Jewish MP, but the abuse she has faced from the left and right and her vocal opposition to Labour’s leadership has brought the former Labour Friends of Israel director’s roots to the fore. Her arrival as a contender in the constituency with the largest Jewish population against one of its greatest friends sets the scene for one of the most high-profile contests of an election that is expected this year. Berger, who widened her majority in her safe Liverpool seat in 2017 said: “Balancing personal and professional responsibilities is complicated for everyone and, as a family, we have had to figure out how best to balance our work with raising our young children. News / Labour Party conference
What antisemitism? Jeremy Corbyn deftly skirted over his party’s four-year antisemitism scandal in his keynote conference speech on Tuesday, only mentioning anti-Jewish racism while attacking Boris Johnson, writes Adam Deker. The Labour leader, who was forced to bring forward his Labour conference speech after the Supreme Court declared the suspension of Parliament was unlawful, insisted he would be a “different kind of prime minister” as he tore into Johnson. Referring to the prime minister’s controversial Daily Telegraph column, he told the conference: “When Boris Johnson compared Muslim women to letterboxes or bank robbers, it wasn’t a flippant comment, it was calculated to play on people’s fears. Displays of racism, Islamophobia or anti-Semitism are not signs of strength, but of weakness.” Corbyn’s party is being investigated by the Equality and Human Rights Commission after a catalogue of antisemitism scandals. Corbyn’s speech came at a conference which was been overshadowed by rows over deputy leader Tom Watson’s role and a split over whether the party should back staying in the European Union. Meanwhile, Labour MP Dame Louise Ellman told a fringe meeting of Labour Friends of Israel that the party’s deputy leader, Tom Watson, has become a “target” because
CONFERENCE BRIEFS
PALESTINIAN ENVOY: BAN THE SETTLERS Hussam Zomlot, the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, who was effectively expelled by Donald Trump after he closed the Palestinian legation in Washington, accused Israel of acting “above the law” for decades. He compared the labelling of produce from settlements to paedophiles, and said that paedophiles would not be ignored, but would be banned. “Ban settlement produce”, he shouted, “ban them”. He also called, to applause, for “illegal settlers” to be banned from the UK. “Illegal settlers are committing an act against the law, so they must be banned from coming to the UK,” he said.
WATSON PLANNED TO CRITICISE CORBYN Labour’s deputy leader planned to attack Jeremy Corbyn’s inaction on antisemitism in his conference speech, before it was cancelled due to Parliament being recalled. Tom Watson took aim at the Labour leader, bemoaning the breakdown of trust between the party and the community and the need for concrete action over Jew-hate. Speaking to the Jewish Chronicle, he said: “I was going to say that it is not just about condemning something -–it’s actually doing something about it.”
of his opposition to antisemitism. Referring to Watson as “not only a staunch friend of Israel” but also as a “true ally of the Jewish community”, Ellaman paid tribute to him for speaking out against Jew-hate in the party. Ellman told guests she has “viewed with horror the rise of antisemitism and the growth of an obsessive, irrational hatred towards the state of Israel.” Hitting out against Corbyn’s record and past associations, she said she “never dreamed that we would be led by a man who would call Hezbollah and Hamas “friends””, or who would “peddle and endorse vile, trope-laden conspiracy theories”. She added: “On the conference floor, we saw a standing ovation given to a delegate who denied there was any antisemitism in the Labour Party. Not only that but a motion supporting boycotts was passed for the first time in Labour history.” “Let us be clear about what this means – the only country the Labour party calls to boycott is the world’s only Jewish state.” Ellman also reflected on the results of the Israeli election, saying she stands with “renewed hope that the friends of peace and social justice in Israel will triumph over those who practice the politics of fear and division and imperil that what makes it so precious: its Jewish and democratic character”.

‘WE’LL REVIEW ARM SALES’ Liberal Judaism Emily Thornberry used a Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East fringe meeting in Brighton to pledge that the first priority of the next Labour government would be to recognise the state of Palestine “and immediately review all arms sales to Israel”. The shadow foreign secretary said that such recognition would come “not in due course, not when the time is right, but now”. Labour would also, she said, host an international emergency conference on Palestinian human rights. Thornberry told the crowded event that her concern was for both Palestinian and Israeli children. She said: “The central screaming question is, how many more generations of Palestinian children are going to have to grow up having to suffer brutality, deprivation and fear in the occupied territories as their normal upbringing? And how many generations of Israeli children are going to have grow up regarding air raid sirens, terror attacks and compulsory military service as their natural views?” If Labour won the next election and she became foreign secretary, she said there would be an immediate review of arms sales from the UK to Israel “to ensure that none of those weapons are being used to breach International law and attack innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza or elsewhere”. She added: “We would be be prepared to say out loud that it shames the UN and the security Council that for decades, Israel has been allowed to ignore, with impunity, all the resolutions the UN has passed with regard to the Occupied Territories — illegal settlement building, detention of children, and indiscriminate violence against civilians — and we will demand effective action to enforce them.” Leeds MP Fabian Hamilton, the shadow min-
chief at JVL talk
Emily Thornberry at the pro-Palestine event
ister for the Middle East, opened his remarks with “Salaam Aleikum” and declared that he had joined the Labour Party “because I believe the human rights and justice are indivisible. They’re not for one community or country against another… we believe in people’s right to selfdetermination”. Hamilton, who is Jewish, said: “What I have seen of the way children are treated in the Occupied Territories brings shame on me and all of us. We have to ensure that there is a state of Palestine and the next Labour government will absolutely ensure that we recognise that state”. But he warned: “This is not a zero-sum game. A two-state solution will benefit enormously the people of Palestine, but it will also secure the future of the people of Israel”. Hussam Zomlot, the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, who was effectively expelled by Donald Trump after he closed the Palestinian legation in Washington, accused Israel of acting “above the law” for decades. At one point, he compared the labelling of produce from settlements to paedophiles, and said that paedophiles would not be ignored, but would be banned. “Ban settlement produce”, he shouted, “ban them”.
The Jewish Leadership Council has attacked one of the community’s top rabbis for attending a meeting of fringe proCorbyn group Jewish Voice for Labour. Senior rabbi Danny Rich, chief executive of Liberal Judaism, was photographed in the front row of a JVL fringe meeting at Labour conference, sparking concern in the community. “This shows no respect for those who have suffered abuse and left the party as a result,” said JLC chair Jonathan Goldstein. “What would he say to Luciana [Berger]?,” he added in a reference to the Jewish MP for Liverpool Wavertree who quit Labour earlier this year, citing concerns about “institutional antisemitism” in the party. Goldstein also tweeted: “This is extremely disappointing. I like Rabbi Danny and had a long chat with him about this last year. I’m afraid he’s well intentioned but just plain wrong and betraying the vast majority of our community.” When approached for comment, Rabbi Rich told Jewish News: “There were two Jewish meetings. I went first to the Jewish Labour Movement meeting and then I went on to the Jewish Voice for Labour. I was there to observe the meeting,. I don’t know why Jonathan Goldstein would express concern. I’m not sure.” The controversial group, set up in 2017 as an alternative to the Jewish Labour Movement, has faced accusations it downplays allegations of antisemitism in the party.

WILLIAMSON: SHUT COMPLIANCE UNIT Suspended Labour MP Chris Williamson told a Brighton fringe event he would “tear down” Labour’s governance unit. The MP for Derby North appeared on a panel alongside former London Mayor Ken Livingstone and ex Momentum vice-chair expelled Labour member Jackie Walker on Tuesday. The event was organised by Labour Against the Witchhunt, a group founded in 2017 to oppose what it sees as “the purge of pro-Corbyn supporters” in the party.
Williamson told the event: “I would tear it down, the whole edifice of the legal and governance unit...because we’re a political party. “We’re not the Stasi. Let it be dealt with by our peers, devolve it to the Labour constituency parties. Let the constituencies sort these matters out.” Images of the event were shared online by the anti-racism charity Hope Not Hate, which criticised the meeting.
Antisemitism book launch moved The launch of a new book on media coverage of the Labour antisemitism was moved from Waterstone’s Brighton shop this week to another venue. The launch of ad News for Labour Antisemitism, the Party and Public Belief was moved to the small Rialto Theatre and attended by authors Greg Philo, Mike Berry, Justin Schlosberg, Antony Lerman and David Miller. Publishing house Pluto Press said it was
disappointed” by the decision, adding that it suspected “there was a concerted campaign to get this event shut down”. However, Waterstones’ managing director James Daunt cited concerns about a lack of preparation. “We had an event which was being chaotically done, causing quite a lot of emotion and that needed to be handled professionally on our part,” he said.
DISCIPLINARY REPORT NAMES REMOVED Concerns were raised this week about transparency in Labour’s complaints process after names were omitted, for the first time in recent memory, from an annual report of cases heard by Labour’s top disciplinary body. The report, which is updated each year and published online ahead of Labour Conference,
records all cases heard by the National Constitutional Committee in the previous calendar year – including antisemitism. The report has in the past contained the names of each individual being investigated, their Constituency Labour Party, the specific party rule allegedly breached and the outcome of the investigation.

Hundreds of people packed into the ornate Middle Street Synagogue in Brighton city centre for the Jewish Labour Movement’s (JLM) only event during the Labour Party conference, a rally headlined by London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan, writes Jenni Frazer. In a series of fierce speeches under the chairmanship of JLM chair Mike Katz, speaker after speaker made clear their commitment to Labour and their pledge to return it to the bona fide anti-racist body they had originally joined. If there can be said to have been a live spectre at the feast, it was that of the former Labour MP Luciana Berger, who left the party in February after months of sustained antisemitic abuse. MP Ruth Smeeth, now JLM’s parliamentary chair, declared: “Luciana is the one person missing.” She added: “No one can say it has been easy to be Jewish in the Labour Party in

ment and Sanctions (BDS) badges, Palestinian lanyards and even the odd keffiyeh. Brighton has adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism and Suarez’s entire presentation was devoted to a mocking dismantling of IHRA – but there was no intervention by anyone in his

Berger takes on Freer for Golders Green seat Continued from page 1 is likely to face strong questions over his continued backing of Johnson, despite the government’s uncompromising Brexit position. Estimates suggest that nearly 70 percent of constituents backed Remain at the last election. Freer, a former whip, is also known as a strong supporter of Jewish communal causes, including successfully lobbying for additional funding for security. He also quit as a parliamentary private secretary in 2014 in order to oppose a motion on recognising of Palestine. Labour’s Jeremy Newmark slashed Freer’s majority to less than 1,700 two years ago, but Labour currently does not have a hopeful in the constituency after its candidate, Sara Conway, stepped aside last week. It is understood suggestions that Labour would not field a candidate

if Berger stood in the area were met with laughter at a recent meeting of the local party. Flavible last week produced a projection of the constituency, which suggested the Lib Dems could narrowly take a seat in which it has previously not been a serious contender. It had Jo Swinson’s party two percentage points ahead of Labour, and a further point ahead of the Tories. The numbers,
however, are not based on a poll of local voters, but rather extrapolated from a national ComRes poll, with local census information and recent voting behaviour taken into account. Polling experts told Jewish News such projections, known as MRP, proved fairly accurate in 2017. Finchley & Golders Green is one of the most Jewish constituencies in the UK. Meanwhile, Newmark, who is leader of Hertsmere’s Labour Group, has reportedly ruled himself out of standing as the party’s candidate in Finchley and Golders Green. It is understood he told members he would not accept such an offer in the event of an election this year. Rabbi Danny Rich, who is Labour councillor for Barnet’s West Finchley ward, is yet to confirm his position.

News / Labour Party conference
One state of mind on the conference floor Brighton’s conference centre was turned into a sea of Palestinian flags, banners, complete with chants of “Free Palestine” as delegates unanimously adopted a resolution under the heading of “ethical foreign policy” which is likely to have the effect of embracing the boycott of Israeli goods. The resolution’s adoption followed a trenchant address by Emily
Thornberry in which she denounced “strong arm politicians” across the world but picked out, among other leaders from Russia, Hungary and Brazil, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu who she accused of “trying to turn Israel into an apartheid state”. Tabled by two constituency parties from Hove and Birkenhead, the resolution calls on Labour “to
Conference delegates wave Palestinian flags
adhere to an ethical policy on all UK’s trade with Israel, in particular by applying international law on settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories and stopping any arms trade with Israel that is used in violation of human rights”. Presenting the motion, Hove’s Ali Brumbie Bojang said that the two state solution had become “meaningless” and Netanyahu’s election pledge to annex part of the West Bank was “against international law”. Israel, she said, could not continue to act with impunity. Her “Free Palestine!” shout at the conclusion of her remarks brought the flags and banners out and many delegates to their feet. No delegate spoke against the motion and it was left to a member of Jewish Voice for Labour, Vanessa Stilwell, to utter the by now traditional claim that she had never witnessed antisemitism in Labour, during remarks in which she spoke on behalf of “our Palestinian brothers and sisters”. Such a claim brought the conference to its feet once again.

News / Jewish News-PaJeS Jewish Schools Awards 2020
Fifth year for school awards An annual search for the brightest and best teaching and leading in Jewish schools is today launched by Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS), in association with Jewish News. Three new categories have been announced for the fifth Jewish Schools Awards, taking place in 2020, including a Curriculum Collaboration Award, Volunteering Award and innovation honour called Beyond the Classroom. The latter recognises a teacher or group of teachers who have initiated a programme to take students out of the classroom in order to offer them a broader range of learning experiences.

Parents’ expectations unrealistic, JFS warns Governors at the UK’s biggest Jewish school have cited the “unrealistic expectations” of parents regarding their children’s abilities as an “obstacle” to the take-up rates for BTEC qualifications, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The comments came at a meeting of the governing body of JFS in London earlier this year, attended by 11 governors plus headteacher Rachel Fink, deputy head Simon Appleman and chair Geraldine Fainer. The minutes of the meeting, released under a Freedom of Information request and posted online, reveal governors identifying parents as the problem when it came to their children choosing whether or not to do Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) specialist work-related qualifications. “The only BTEC course that had really taken off at JFS so far had been Business Studies at KS4, but staff were attempting now to establish which Year 9 pupils might be better suited to follow and would benefit more from a BTEC rather than a more academic GCSE course,” the minutes record. “To make BTECs more attractive required a cultural shift to overcome the obstacle of parents who were unrealistic about their children’s capabilities.” They added: “Funding would be needed for additional help to deal effectively with pupils with significant behavioural issues and those with other needs not sufficiently acute to attract Local Authority additional funding.” BTEC qualifications are taken in more

The Volunteer Award honours schoolbased volunteering, recognising an individual or group of volunteers, governors, parents or others, who are not employed by the school, but who have significantly contributed and improved aspects of school life. The judges this year include consultant paediatrician Michael Markiewicz, family lawyer Naomi Greenwood and Leonie Lewis, vice-president of the United Synagogue and former head of the Jewish Volunteering Network. The awards will be announced in February and are being run by PaJeS, a division of the Jewish Leadership Council. Its director Rabbi David Meyer said: “It is hard to believe that it is already our fifth year! This year we are planning our biggest ever event. We have introduced some exciting new categories to our awards and look forward to receiving online nominations for these. “We very much look forward to celebrating the exceptional talent of our school staff and look forward to sharing this exciting communal event with you all.” Editorial comment, page 30

than 100 countries at all levels, from preGCSE to degree equivalent, but in the UK they can carry a stigma, often perpetuated by parents who feel that university is the only route to success. Traditionally, JFS students have moved to West Herts College to do BTECs such as plumbing, which require large workshops and for which the school is not resourced. Last year the school said it was “developing the range of options, such as a BTEC in applied science, for those who want to continue with sciences but did not get the grades to study at A-level”.

Tragedy to triumph / Special Report
More that unites than divides Amid the smoke and ruins of an attacked Somali community centre in north London, deep bonds of friendship grew between local Jews and Muslims In the early hours of Wednesday 5 June, at around 3am, Abubakar Ali was woken up by shouts and dread. Someone was at his Muswell Hill home, banging on his door, screaming his name, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. This is the kind of description all-too familiar to law enforcers who deal with hate crime, but the person banging on the door had not come to harm Abubaker, or to threaten him, but to tell him that the Muslim community centre he ran was on fire. They were words the chairman of the Somali Bravanese Welfare Association (SBWA) had always hoped never to hear. His charity was set up to support Somali Bravanese refugees. Many came to London in the 1990s, and its members are among London’s poorest. The community hails from Brava, a city in Somalia on the Indian Ocean, whose people have been persecuted for reasons all too familiar to Jews: high aspiration and high achievement. Abubakar ran to the SBWA’s Old Barn Community Centre on Coppetts Road, just in time to see the last of the flames engulf the building. It had been arson and obviously so – racist graffiti referencing the English Defence League (EDL) had been scrawled nearby. “We sat and wept,” Abubakar told his friend Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg of New North
Rabbi Miriam Berger shows young members of the Somali Bravanese community a Torah

their children went to study after school, where they felt safe, supported and cared for. That place was everything one would call a true community: a centre of solidarity, celebration, learning, culture, care and prayer. There was a sense of shock as we spoke, as of the loss of part of the very heart of a family.” Wittenberg was an ally. “I had a pre-existing friendship with the community and its leaders,” he explained. “We shared a ‘Walk of Lights,’ from the synagogue, to their community centre and finishing at a church, in each place reflecting on the meaning of light in our faiths, so when the fire happened, I already felt I had a warm relationship with the community.” Allies were needed. “For the next two days my head wasn’t really working,” Abubakar told Jewish News. “I thought we couldn’t rebuild because whoever did this would come again, would attack us again. I felt like it might be over.” Amid the smoke and ruins, Abubaker was approached by Rabbi David Mason of Muswell Hill United Synagogue, whose home was close by. “He told me that he was sorry for what happened and asked me what we needed,” recalls Abubaker. “I didn’t know. All I knew was that we needed legal assistance and a new temporary base for activities and prayers. It was approaching Ramadan and the kids were doing GCSEs, so would soon break for the summer.” Together with Rabbi Rebecca Birk of Finchley Progressive (Liberal) Synagogue and Rabbi Miriam Berger of Finchley Reform Synagogue (FRS), Wittenberg and Mason would set about helping Abubakar rebuild. Calls were already being made. Charlotte Fischer, then 25, had just been appointed a senior community organiser for Citizens UK three months earlier, and became involved. An active member of Reform Judaism who learnt Arabic while in Damascus, she set up an emergency meeting at Wittenberg’s house. Abubakar explains how Jewish help was crucial. “Rabbi Jonathan offered to help get me legal assistance, Rabbi David offered to be the police liaison, and Rabbis Rebecca and Miriam offered us the use of their synagogues,” he recalls. “The following day, on the Friday, there was
another meeting, hosted by Rabbi David at Muswell Hill Synagogue. He had got all the local leaders of churches and mosques together. They pledged their solidarity and pledged to help. It was incredible.” Soon, rooms for after-school Bravanese clubs were made available at Finchley United Synagogue, while Wittenberg had already contacted James Libson, a senior partner at City law firm Mishcon de Reya, who hosted meetings immediately after the fire to clarify legal issues. Most of the legal running was soon taken up by Simon Chadowitz, one of Mishcon’s property partners, who described the “Herculean effort from Abubakar and those closest to him to get to this point”. Chadowitz said Abubakar was getting help from “an ever-growing list of local friends and professionals who rallied to give their time and skillsets”, as Mishcon’s lawyers worked on plans to get a new community centre up and running. Meanwhile, FRS had agreed to host the Bravanese community’s Ramadan prayers, as well as a joint Jewish-Bravanese iftar, a fast-breaking meal at the end of the day. FRS maintained its commitment to doing so for years, while Abubakar and friends attended the annual Seder at Wittenberg’s home. “On one unforgettable occasion he stood up and said ‘your story is my story’, describing how they had had to flee their home, how the eldest had said they couldn’t leave but the youngest had said they had to go,” said Wittenberg. “Such discussions are sadly all too familiar to families like my parents, who fled Nazi Germany.”
❝
THAT PLACE WAS A TRUE COMMUNITY, A CENTRE OF CULTURE AND PRAYER
Alongside the efforts of Abubakar have been those of Asma Ali, an SBWA educator who forged ties with local Jewish and Muslim communities to help keep SBWA’s youth and women’s programmes going. Six months pregnant at the time of the fire, she was instrumental in securing £1.1 million in rebuilding funds from Barnet Council in the following months. Berger and Ali have since become good friends. “Whenever we sit down and have a cup of tea, we’re like ‘Oh, yeah, we do the same, we greet the same, we hug the same’,” said Ali. The pair have taken their own learning into schools to explain to children that “there is more that religions have in common than divides us”. Now the community’s new centre, on Tarling Road in East Finchley, is close to opening. “We are close to finalising a lease of part of the new and quite phenomenal shared community facility, which will allow the Bravanese community to continue to grow and thrive in Barnet,” says Chadowitz. “It hasn’t been the easiest ride but it will be worth it in the end.”

School to teach negotiation skills A Scottish school founded by a Jewish headteacher who fled Nazi Germany is to teach pupils negotiation skills to counter the “poor example” of Brexit. Gordonstoun School in Moray was founded in 1934 by the educationalist Dr Kurt Hahn, who fled Nazi Germany when it was no longer safe to remain in the country. The school counts Prince Charles among its list of famous alumni as depicted in the second season of the hit TV show The Crown. Its current headteacher,
Gordonstoun School in Moray, Scotland
Lisa Kerr, said the institution had been appalled by the “aggressive and confrontational tone” being adopted by world leaders. Kerr said: “As a school
founded by a Jew who fled Germany under persecution of the Nazis, and which has always welcomed students from diverse backgrounds, we strongly believe that it is
possible for people with different perspectives to reach a common understanding.” Pupils attending the school’s Learning to Listen symposium from Thursday to Saturday will be urged not to follow the example set by politicians during the Brexit debate and instead develop better listening and understanding skills in order to negotiate successfully. Youngsters from across Britain have been invited to the free event. “We want to teach leaders of tomorrow the keys to find solutions,” Kerr said.
INVITE TO DISGRACED VICAR IS WITHDRAWN Disgraced vicar Stephen Sizer, who posted an article saying Zionists were behind 9/11 will no longer speak at a Gaza fundraising dinner in London next month, after his invitation was withdrawn. Sizer (pictured) was due to speak at the Star of India restaurant in Leytonstone on 3 October, for a charity dinner hosted by Ilford Momentum. However, a spokesman for Ilford
Momentum apologised last Thursday, saying the organisers had not known about Sizer’s past comments, which have been described by the Bishop of Guildford as “appalling” and “antisemitic”. In 2015, Sizer was banned from “writing, preaching, teaching, emailing, tweeting, posting on Facebook or commenting in any way in relation to the current situation in the Middle East” after
posted a link to an article titled ‘9-11/Israel Did It.’ In 2014 he attended a gathering of antisemites in Iran for a conference with seminars such as “Mossad’s Role in the 9/11 Coup d’Etat” and “Zionist fingerprints on the 9/11 cover-up”. An Ilford Momentum spokesman said: “Having been made aware of [Stephen Sizer’s past comments] we have rescinded his invitation. We oppose antisemitism in all its forms and we apologise for any offence caused. The meeting has been cancelled.”
Iceland fined for Palestinian flags during Eurovision final Iceland’s public broadcaster was fined by the Eurovision Song Contest for displaying Palestinian flags during the finals in Israel. After the final score for Iceland’s Hatari was announced at the end of the competition in May, the punk band, which has criticised Israel’s treatment
of the Palestinians and toured Hebron during the competition, displayed scarves decorated with the Palestinian flag and the word Palestine. The action violates the rules of the competition, organised by the European Broadcasting Union, which prohibits political gestures.
JCORE petitions on social justice A Jewish human rights group has called on British Jews to “renew our commitment to social justice” by demanding the government take several simple steps to help refugees work, settle and reunite with families. The Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE) used its Rosh Hashanah appeal to
ask supporters to sign a petition, found on its website, calling on the government to allow asylum seekers to work while their applications are processed, and to fund a resettlement programme for those allowed to stay. It said the appeal was made “at a time when our own politics and society are tainted by prejudice”.

He’d attacked her with his hands. Now he wanted to hit her with paper. Debbie had been trying to stop her husband, Jon, from hitting their 3 year-old son in the head with a slipper. Jon had become increasingly controlling, losing his temper about the smallest things, stopping Debbie seeing her friends and controlling her movements. But this was the first time it had become physical. That night, she escaped with the children to a Jewish Women’s Aid refuge. But she was still under attack, this time by paper. Jon was alleging she intended to abduct the children to Israel, and he was refusing to pay Child Support. Debbie was doubly distraught as she had absolutely no idea how to deal with the legal proceedings,

and of course no money for lawyers. At this point, Debbie lost all hope. Quite miraculously, in her hour of need, a friend told her about Paperweight. Paperweight’s legal team sprung into action and helped steer Debbie through the court proceedings (where she won on all counts), as well as guiding her through the complicated divorce paperwork. For Debbie, Paperweight has been a lifeline: “It has been a very, very difficult time, and I didn’t know where to turn. I couldn’t have managed without Paperweight, I can tell you that...” If you need help with financial, legal or benefits issues, or other paperworkrelated matters, we’re here for you. Succah’s coming home to Wembley A succah will be built inside Wembley Stadium next month to mark the festival of Succot. The temporary shelter will be installed, behind the goal, for a day in October, but the exact date cannot be publicised for security reasons. Guests will be allowed inside the succah to share food and listen to presentations given by charities and community leaders.
The succah will offer a warm welcome
Invitations have been sent to Jewish football players and leadership groups, faith leaders and social action charities to join in on the celebrations – but the guest list has not yet been finalised. Rabbi Alex Goldberg, chair of the Football Association’s faith network, said: “Wembley is the home of football, so why not build a temporary shelter for Jewish people to celebrate the festival of Succot in the home of football, which is the home of our nation’s sport and a centre for many people of our identity?” He added: “Wembley is the national stadium and we want to celebrate Succot in a national arena and show that at this time the Jewish community are as part of British society.” The event is not open to the public, but speaking in a personal capacity, Goldberg said he aspires to hold similar ticketed events in Leeds, London, Brighton and Manchester. “We need to work with the clubs and perhaps public authorities to ensure that could be possible, and I really hope it is,” he said.

An etrog importer has thanked community leaders for helping “save Succot” after health authorities seized a hefty batch of the festive fruit, writes Jack Mendel. The Animal and Plant Health Agency confiscated 600 etrogs this week after they fell foul of heightened import requirements of citrus fruits with stalks. The Board of Deputies immediately swung into action, coordinating with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and etrog importer Stephen Colman, to ensure the batch was made available to Jews in

thanked all the parties involved “for coming to this pragmatic arrangement, which will ensure the UK Jewish community can fully celebrate Succot while ensuring our precious plant health is protected”. She added: “We plan to stay in touch with the Board of Deputies and importers as the season progresses to ensure this runs as smoothly as possible and work together to prevent similar issues in future years.” Board president Marie van der Zyl said the “timely intervention potentially saved Succot”. She also praised her staff, Colman and the government.

AUTHOR RETURNS TO SHOAH A sequel to controversial bestseller The Tattooist of Auschwitz will be published next month. Author Heather Morris, whose story of concentration camp love sold 1.8 million copies in the UK alone, will visit London for the launch of Cilka’s Journey. Morris claimed The Tattooist of Auschwitz – the story of how the camp’s tattooist, Slovak Jew Lali Sokolov, falls in love with prisoner Gita Furman – was “95 per cent accurate” and “researched and confirmed”. However, it came under heavy scrutiny by Holocaust researchers. Her second book follows Cilka Klein, a 16-year-old girl sent to Auschwitz in 1942, who was separated during the selection process
by the camp’s commandant, after he noticed her long, beautiful hair. After liberation, she is charged as a collaborator by the Russians and sent to Siberia. The sequel, which explores the female experience of war and sexual violence in conflict will launch at an event as part of the London Literature Festival at the Southbank Centre, next month. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum noted that The Tattooist of Auschwitz gave “an impression about Auschwitz inspired by authentic events,” it was “almost without any value as a document”.

RABIN MURDER FILM WINS ISRAELI OSCAR A film about the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin as seen through the eyes of his killer will be the country’s nomination for an Oscar. Incitement took the Ophir Award in Israel for best picture last Sunday night. The top prize at the Ophirs of the Israel Academy of Film and Television becomes Israel’s submission to the Academy Awards for best international feature film, formerly best foreign language film. Yigal Amir, a right-wing extremist, killed Rabin on 4 November 1995.
British Library puts Hebrew texts online Ancient religious texts, including a 1,000-year-old Hebrew Bible, have been digitised and made available online for free by the British Library after help from a British Jewish philanthropist. The collection, called Discovering Sacred Texts, is an extraordinary selection of manuscripts, books, scrolls and scriptures that allows anyone with an internet connection to explore the sacred texts of the world’s major faiths. Among the offerings is a lavishly-decorated scroll of the Buddhist Lotus Sūtra from Japan (pictured), written in gold and silver ink on indigo-dyed paper, dating back to 1636, and the earliest surviving copy of the complete New Testament, Codex Sinaiticus, dating from the fourth century. Also included is the Ramayana, an epic poem from the sage Valmiki, composed in Sanskrit in the middle of the
first millennium, and the Ma’il Qur’an, one of the earliest Qur’ans in the world, dating back to the eighth century. The new website includes more than 250 digitised collection items, teachers’ resources, short films and articles written by academics, faith leaders and curators. Many of the newly-digitised texts are being made available online for the first time. It features the six mostpractised faiths in the UK – Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism – as well as Baha’ism, Jainism and Zoroastrianism. The pro-
ject has been co-sponsored by Dangoor Education, and Jewish philanthropist David Dangoor said he was “delighted” to have helped. “The British Library, as one of the great libraries of the world, is expanding and redefining the role of a library in the digital age,” he said. “Millions of people around the world will be able to see and understand the impact of many of the documents and texts that have helped shape the cultures of the world we live in today.” u For more information, visit www.bl.uk/sacred -texts
50 COMMUNITIES UNITE AT CHIEF’S NESHMA TALK More than women from 50 religious communities gathered at the new South Hampstead Synagogue on Sunday for the Chief Rabbi’s Neshama event. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis set up Neshama last year to promote women’s learning. Rebbetzen Dr Adina Shmidman, founding director of the Women’s Initiative at the Orthodox Union, and educator Yael Leibowitz were among the speakers. Mirvis said: “These events are so important, not just because of the wisdom and inspiration they offer in and of themselves, but because they
set a tone far greater engagement with women teaching and learning Torah.” Attendee Louise Moont said: “It means so much to take part in an event like this – particularly one led by women who are more than able to educate in a manner that we can not only relate to through our own experiences, but also inspires and enhances our connection to Torah.” She added: “These are exciting times and as opportunities for women’s learning continue to increase, I hope many more women take advantage of them.” Photos by Blake Ezra Photography

TELEGRAPH DELETES CONTROVERSIAL PIECE The Telegraph has deleted a Brexit piece by an Estonian MEP who once demanded a “final solution” for refugees and appeared to praise Nazi economics. It is understood the article was removed after Jewish News contacted the newspaper. It was a longer version of a two-minute speech given by Jaak Madison in the European Parliament. His piece, “By keeping the UK hostage, the EU elite is becoming the architect of its own downfall”, was published last week.
Nominations flood in for our leaders lists Nominations for Jewish News’ 40 Under 40 list have started to come in, as our judging panels prepare to finalise the definitive ‘Who’s Who’ of young leaders in Anglo-Jewry. It is five years since Jewish News last published its list of heavy communal hitters, and can now reveal that a new list is set to be compiled for 2020, alongside a 25 Under 25 and 18 Under 18 countdown. Previous winners, such as Lib Dem MP Luciana Berger, have moved across to become one of the judges, and will help come up with the blue riband lists, set to be announced in the spring. To nominate a person you feel has made an impact, just visit www.jewishnews.co.uk and previous inclusion on any prior list does not prohibit entry for 2020. Many of those who made the list last time have gone on to take the community’s most senior leadership positions. The three 2020 lists, sponsored by the Jewish Leadership
Council (JLC), each have their own judging panel, specially tailored to the age category. The 18 Under 18 panel will comprise an unprecedented gathering of school and youth leaders. To qualify for the 25 Under 25 or 40 Under 40 lists, nominees must be under that age by 1 April 2020. To qualify for the 18 Under 18 list, nominees must have been under the age of 18 by 1 September 2019. Alongside Berger on the judging panel for next year’s 40 Under 40 list will be 23 senior figures representing the length
and breadth of the community, including Liberal and Reform Judaism, Union of Jewish Students, London School of Jewish Studies, Norwood, the S&P Sephardi Community, the Community Security Trust, JW3, Mizrachi UK, Reshet and The Fed in Manchester, to name but a few. Chair of judges Andrew Gilbert said: “While the lists are fun, they are important in giving recognition, telling stories and highlighting trends." Nominations deadline is 13 November

Shul sacks rabbi and chazan The rabbi and chazan of a large Jewish community in Manchester have had their contracts of employment terminated after 200 members voted to kick them out. Rabbi Jonathan Guttentag and chazan Joseph Muller saw their time at Whitefield Hebrew Congregation come to an end at a Special General Meeting on Thursday night, after years of upset and infighting at the shul. The synagogue’s by-laws mean religious employees cannot simply be removed by the executive, but must also be voted out by members.
Guttentag survived a similar vote in 2012. The executive said the pair’s combined salaries were taking up too much of the shul budget, but Guttentag said there was enough money to pay him. In the shul’s latest published annual financial review, it notes voluntary income “decreased during 2017/18 to £88,252 from £164,950 in 2017”, but that expenses also decreased. Guttentag urged members not to sack him, saying he had “stood by” them for 30 years. He and Muller had the support of the shul choir and the community learning centre.

A play on the song reminding children to dip the apple in the honey, the campaign – across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using hashtag #flipwithmoriah – aims to use the new year as an opportunity to engage people in tangible acts of kindness. GIFT will receive all monies raised to help support those in need. u Details: www.jgift.org/events/flip withmoriah/34

Mandie Winston (pictured), pictured pictured), who grew up in London, will move from Israel to head
the United Jewish Israel Appeal (UJIA) in London, becoming the first woman to hold the role, as the charity approaches 100 years. The charity connects British Jews with Israel and funds several initiatives in the northern Galil region, but has been without a permanent chief executive since February, after academic Michael Wegier left.
UJIA chair Louise Jacobs said: “We looked far and wide and I am thrilled Mandie is our new chief executive. “She knows and loves the British Jewish community, shares our vision and has a superlative record of leadership.” She added: “I am so grateful to our Israel director Natie Shevel for stepping into the breach as acting chief executive, allowing us the time and space to find the right candidate.”

Israeli scientists have been able to show the facial and skeletal structure of an extinct and little-known group of humans, despite an almost complete lack of bones, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem worked with peers at Stanford University in the US to offer new insights into Denisovans, who walked the earth with Neanderthals and modern humans’ ancestors until around 50,000 years ago. Archaeologists only discovered the Denisovans in 2008, and only three teeth and the bone of a Denisovan’s small finger had been found by the time the team used genetic analysis to work out what this human group looked like. Shortly after submitting their scientific paper, which followed three years studying the chemical changes in Denisovan DNA, a chance discovery showed they were right.
“One of the most exciting moments happened a few weeks after we sent our paper to peer-review,” said Professor Liran Carmel. “Scientists discovered a Denisovan jawbone! We compared it to our predictions and found it matched perfectly. Without even planning on it, we received independent confirmation of our ability to reconstruct whole anatomical profiles using DNA extracted from a single fingertip.” Little is known about the Denisovans, who lived in Siberia and East Asia, but it is thought their DNA helps today’s Tibetans live at high altitude. Studies have shown that around six percent of present-day Aboriginal Australians and Melanesians carry Denisovan DNA. The Israeli-US team identified 56 Denisovan anatomical features in which Denisovans differ from modern humans and/

Extremism ‘growing’ Mitzvah Day goes green Right-wing extremism is the fastest growing terrorist threat in the UK – with supporters seeking to mimic jihadist attacks, police have said. The UK head of counterterrorism Neil Basu said seven of the 22 plots foiled since March 2017 have been linked to farright ideologies. About 10 percent of around 800 live terror investigations were linked to right-wing terrorism, while there has been a near-doubling of referrals to the government’s controversial Prevent programme since 2015/16 to 18 percent. “It’s rising from a low base, but it’s probably the fastest growing bit of my casebook at the moment,” the Metropolitan
Counterterrorism chief Neil Basu
Police Assistant Commissioner said at a briefing last Thursday. “I see it as my job, and the security service as my major partner, to stop that.” Basu said counterterror police and MI5 have disrupted right-wing plots “designed to kill people”. Attack methods used and planned have mimicked those seen in jihadist plots, including
knife attacks and seeking to create improvised explosive devices, he told reporters. This comes after Basu addressed a counterterror conference in Israel earlier in the month, during which he said 22 plots have been foiled since March 2017. Last week, Basu said the biggest threat still comes from Islamist and jihadist terrorists. “Despite the increases, right-wing terrorism remains a relatively small percentage of our overall demand, but when nearly a third of the plots foiled by police and security services since 2017 relate to rightwing ideology, it lays bare why we are taking this so seriously,” he said.
The first Mitzvah Day event under the charity’s new green theme took place this week, as people of multiple faiths united for an environmentally-friendly cook for the homeless. Members of the Barnet Multi Faith Forum, Barnet United Synagogue, Haringey Muslim Community, Faith Matters and Camp Unity Borehamwood came together at JW3. It was the first time many of the people – from Jewish, Muslim, Humanist and Ismaili backgrounds – had met. Together they made soup, vegetarian curry and rice and apple crumble for nearby shelter, Ashford Place in Cricklewood. The event aimed to meet the charity’s commitment to ‘going greener’ in 2019. This year’s event takes place on, and around, Sunday, 17 November. Mitzvah Day’s interfaith advisor Rabbi Jeff Berger said: “It was inspiring to be part of today’s interfaith team effort to cook a delicious three-course meal for the Ashford Place homeless shelter. Our volunteers, from widely diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, had such
great energy we hardly noticed the time pass. “Our Abrahamic traditions are rooted in providing food hospitality. There’s something spiritually nourishing in group cooking, especially when the result is for someone we may never meet.”

To get the results, the team mapped and compared the tiny chemical changes in genes in Denisovans, Neanderthals and chimpanzees. Then they worked out what those differences might mean for anatomical features, based on what is known about human disorders in which those same genes lose their function. Thanks to their painstaking genetic detective work, researchers now know that Denisovans had much wider skulls than modern humans, with a sloping forehead, long face, large dental arches, no chin and a large pelvis. Scientists now hope the discovery will help them understand more about the Denisovan lifestyle and how they survived the extreme cold of Siberia.

Convicted Holocaust denier Alison Chabloz was jailed this week for breaching the terms of her suspended sentence, writes Adam Decker. Chabloz, who posted offensive songs online calling Auschwitz a “theme park”, was found guilty in June 2018 of three counts of sending by a public communications network an offensive, indecent or menacing message or material. She was sentenced to 20 weeks’ jail suspended for two years at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, and was banned from posting anything on social media for one year. In February, a court upheld the conviction against

her, with the judge calling her a “Holocaust denier” who is “manifestly antisemitic and utterly obsessed with what she perceives to be the wrongdoing of the Jews and their disproportionate influence in politics, the media and banking in particular”. This week, the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) said she has been put behind bars for eight weeks, after being found guilty of breaching the terms of her suspended sentence by posting to her blog. CAA’s Stephen Silverman said: “We are delighted that justice has taken its proper course. This trial follows contact between Campaign Against Antisemitism’s lawyers and the National Probation Service, and we are grateful for their cooperation. “We hope that this sentence will send a message that antisemitism is unacceptable and that the courts will not hesitate to use the powers at their disposal to bring offenders to justice.” In August, Chabloz was stopped by officers at St Pancras International under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, after French authorities reportedly banned her from entering the country, saying she posed a “serious threat”.

Jewish News meets... Rabbi Naftali Schiff
The Schiff of things to come
Rabbi Naftali Schiff tells Jenni Frazer about his ‘baby’ – the multi-organisation Jewish Futures, that aims to tailor education to different parts of the community If you could take Rabbi Naftali Schiff ’s enthusiasm and bottle it, you might well have enough rocket fuel to serve the whole of British Jewry. That, at any rate, is the over-riding impression after a fast-track gallop around the premises of Schiff ’s Hendon “baby” — the multiorganisation headquarters of Jewish Futures. Jewish Futures, which the energetic rabbi prefers to call a platform rather than an umbrella, is the collective name for the present 12 “alternative education” organisations housed in Hendon. They all grew out of Aish, the youth-focused educational charity with which London-born Schiff was primarily associated when he came back to the UK from Israel in 1993. The “mother ship” of the organisations is, of course, Aish. The other 11 range from one of the newest, Ta’am, which tells the Jewish story through food, through to GIFT, a sort of “pay-it-forward” grouping that aims to inspire the next generation to become donors, through programmes for volunteering and education. Schiff is the overall chief executive of Jewish Futures, but each of the participating

groups has its own CEO. Nevertheless, the way in which Jewish Futures is set up means

there is both independence and interdependence. All the groups, for example, can benefit from central services, such as a dedicated film studio. All the graphics and media — and the accounts — are similarly available to every organisation, in-house. “It’s clear that in today’s world it’s not one size fits all,” says Schiff. So, although there is overlap — and an agreed set of basic core values to which all the organisations subscribe — there is a clear distinction Schiff with Holocaust Survivor Josef Lewkowicz about the services on offer. Israel Election / Bibi gets the nod
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been given the difficult job of forming a new government. The task of giving a political leader the opportunity to form a government falls to Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin, whose attempts to broker a unity government between Netanyahu and his chief rival, former Israel Defence Forces chief Benny Gantz, failed. Netanyahu now has up to six weeks to form a coalition. If he fails, Gantz is likely to be given a chance. The Likud leader faces an uphill struggle. After a tight election, his party, along with smaller allied parties, controls 55 seats, short of the required 61-seat majority in parliament. His former ally, Yisrael Beiteinu party, refuses to sit in a government with Netanyahu’s srictly-Orthodox partners, and dovish opposition parties are unlikely to back Netanyahu. Earlier in the week, Israelis were waiting to see whether Gantz and Netanyahu could work together in a unity government after this month’s election showed neither had enough support to form a government without the other. The two men reportedly met for two hours at Rivlin’s residence in Jerusalem on Monday evening, speaking alone for half an hour. Chief negotiators for the two parties met on Tuesday for more structured talks.

President Reuven Rivlin, centre, flanked by Benny Gantz, left, and Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday
Whether Gantz or Netanyahu will serve the first two years was assumed to be the major stumbling block in the negotiations. Netanyahu has his first pre-indictment hearing in a few days, and Gantz has previously
said he could not serve in any government with Netanyahu while his legal woes were ongoing. Netanyahu failed to form a coalition after Israel’s last election in April, when there was a similar result. But instead of giving the
opposition a chance to forge a government, he called this month’s vote. However, the tactic appears to have backfired, with Gantz emerging two points ahead this time. Everything you need

Gandhi Rosh Hashanah note found A Rosh Hashanah greeting written by Mahatma Gandhi on the day the Nazis invaded Poland has been discovered at the National Library of Israel. The handwritten letter from the famed Indian advocate of nonviolence to A.E. Shohet, the head of the Bombay Zionist Association, is dated September 1, 1939. The library placed it online this week. “Dear Shohet, You have my good wishes for your new year,” the letter reads. “How I wish the new year may mean an era of peace for your afflicted people.” The greeting was discovered as part of a major National Library of Israel initiative to review millions of items in its archival collections, which include
personal papers, photographs and documents. The library’s initiative is with support from the Leir Foundation. Shohet was an Indian Jew from the Baghdadi community in Bombay. He had interviewed Gandhi earlier that year, in March, at his ashram in Wardha, according to the National Library. Gandhi had called for resisting Nazism solely through nonconfrontational means. “My sympathies are all with the Jews … If there ever could be a justifiable war, in the name of and for humanity, war against Germany would be justified. But I do not believe in any war,” he wrote in 1938.

Jews in Kaluga have met for Rosh Hashanah for the first time in decades. Phone lists were used to contact disconnected families and participants, including the granddaughter of Kaluga’s last rabbi, said the shofar was blown for the first time in 90 years.
Politicians in Vienna have agreed to extend a law allowing dual citizenship to Austrian-born Holocaust survivors and their families. Currently the law only applies to survivors who left before 1945, but it was agreed to extend it to include those who left before 1955, and for it to include descendants for the first time. A shofar hidden and blown in Auschwitz was shown publicly on Monday in New York, where it will be included in an exhibition. It was found by exprisoner Chaskel Tydor on a death march.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
Eyes back on Iran Israeli ears were pricked this week when Boris Johnson said Donald Trump should negotiate a new nuclear deal with Iran. One can only wonder whether Foreign and Commonwealth Officer mandarins reacted, since in saying that the British prime minister has shifted the UK’s positioning on the issue. Jerusalem leaned further in to hear a damning joint statement from the three big European powers – the UK, France and Germany, aka ‘the E3’ – declaring that Iran was behind the attacks on Saudi Arabia’s two big oil refineries this month. Both statements matter, because until now the E3 has acted as a counterweight to Israel and Trump on Iran. They have been trying to keep the 2015 nuclear deal alive, despite the US withdrawal. In doing so they have held out hope to Tehran. The Iranians responded to a raft of new sanctions by flexing their muscles on tankers and refineries with drones and cruise missiles. If the Europeans’ position hardens, it gives the ayatollahs less wiggle room. Israel cares about all this because the 2015 deal only froze Iranian nuclear ambitions for a few years and didn’t cover things like ballistic missiles. Trump’s deal would, but Iran is not interested. Israel naturally worries about Trump’s love of a deal. Remember North Korea? He went from threatening to friendly in months. The thought of Trump warmly greeting Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sends shivers down Israeli backs. Both Trump and Rouhani are pragmatic if nothing else, and both want a signature achievement. Boris will need to be similarly pragmatic, if he is to tread a line between Europe, the White House, Israel and Iran.

Conway was right all along Your report that Sara Conway has stepped down as Labour candidate for Finchley and Golders Green was most distressing (Jewish News, 12 September 2019). She seemed an outstanding candidate in every way, and we were looking forward to voting for her – as were many others. It is even more disturbing that she seems to have been hounded out for telling the truth. In her interview, she did not deny the existence of some antisemitism in the Labour Party, but claimed the issue was ‘weaponised’. Ironically, the ‘backlash’ against her that triggered her resignation validated her point,
I read about the decision by the TUC to boycott Israel stating the reason as: ‘To prioritise Palestine rights to justice and equality’. I am convinced the TUC suffers from myopia. Can’t they see it is not the Palestinians that are the issue? It is their vile, corrupt, autonomous governments that have put their people in to this tragic situation.

The Jewish Schools Awards, organised by this newspaper and Partnerships for Jewish Schools, has reached its fifth year – the (literally) old-school term for Year 11. It seems like only yesterday our awards were the new kid in class, unsure of its place, in a blazer two sizes too large, struggling to redo its tie after PE. Now the event is a perennial, much-loved showpiece in the academic year. We’ve celebrated and championed hundreds of teachers since in 2016 and 2020 promises to be bigger and more ambitious than ever, with awards for those inspiring and innovating in secular and Jewish studies in primary and secondary categories. and echoed the bullying behaviour that has been claimed in some reports of antisemitism against Labour Party members. In the Haftorah for Yom Kippur morning, which we will hear shortly, it is written: ‘Surely this is the fast I choose... Surely you should divide your bread with the hungry, and bring the moaning poor to your home.’ (Isaiah 57: 14-58) Or as the great English Shelley famously put it, recycled by Jeremy Corbyn, ‘For the many not the few.’
They are brainwashing the people in Gaza and the West Bank that hostilty, violence and war will bring about the required result. May I suggest we boycott the TUC as Palestinian jobs in Israel will be at risk if Israel is boycotted? I am sure the Palestinians will be delighted at losing their jobs.

LUCIANA WOULD DO WELL TO STAND AGAINST FOES I read Luciana Berger might contest one of the Barnet seats at the next election. I find this amazing as, for the past two elections, she has stood on the most left-wing Labour manifesto we have seen, which was rejected by the electorate in Barnet and, specifically, our community. The reason for her departure from Labour was owing to the rise in antisemitism in her party, which stems from the envy of extreme left policies. I would respect her more if she stood in a seat that would oust one of our community’s
foes; however it looks like these new Liberal Democrats seem to be wanting to target Conservative seats rather than replace some of Corbyn’s ghastly candidates. As a community, we need friends and currently all our Members of Parliament in Barnet can be considered true friends to our community. The upshot of her standing in any one of the seats in Barnet most probably would result in Corbyn’s candidate winning as there is no chance of her winning any of the seats.

You’ll be forgiven for straying I read Hilary Freeman’s cry for help in last week’s edition, in which she claims not to believe in God (Jewish News, 19 September 2019). “I discovered my husband shares my cancer risk” “I had no idea my Jewish heritage meant I’d be more likely to carry a genetic mutation that increases my chances of developing certain cancers. Luckily my sister-in-law did, and she urged me to get genetic testing. “I discovered I have the BRCA2 mutation – but the biggest shock was finding out my husband (who is not Jewish) has it too. “However, this knowledge has allowed us to access extra screening and given me the opportunity to undergo risk-reducing surgery, so we can be here for our children.” – Angela Moore Could your family history of cancer be caused by a genetic mutation?
Women and men of Ashkenazi Jewish heritage are 10 times as likely to carry a BRCA gene mutation which increases the likelihood of certain cancers. If you are a carrier, there is a 50% chance you will pass it onto your child.

Stalemate but still hope for an inclusive society ALEX BRUMMER
CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL

f Israel were like any other Western democracy, the two main political groupings, Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud and Benny Gantz’s Blue and White, would be reaching out to the next largest party to form a new coalition administration. That didn’t happen because the party that came third in the election garnering a record 13 seats in the Knesset was the Joint List, a coalition of the Arab parties. Nevertheless, the Arab List leader felt confident enough to recommend a Gantz-led administration. Netanyahu, who on Wednesday evening was tasked with forming the next government after unity talks predictably failed – has played a key and clumsy role in uniting the Israeli Arabs. His public denigration of Israel’s sizeable Arab minority, who make an enormous contribution to Israel society, was effective in bringing out the vote. Israel’s Arab voters increased their turnout to 60 percent in the September poll, up
from 49 percent in the April election. In April, both the major parties declined to engage with the Arab politicians, regarding such approaches as poisonous. This time around Gantz did engage and has reached out to the Joint List chairman, Ayman Odeh. One supposes that a UK-style supply and confidence arrangement might be possible. Whatever shape the new administration takes, it will be impossible to ignore the views of the Joint List. One of the hardest issues for Israel’s Arab community, the Druze, and other minorities has been the passage of the Nation State Law. Earlier this year, the British arm of the Abraham Initia-

tives (which I chair) held a forum on the role of Arabs in the media in Israel. Our Israeli Arab guest, Iman Safadi, a Druze woman working for IDF radio, recounted how she and her community – who have fought alongside Jews in every war since 1948 – felt offended and alienated. The attempt to redefine Israel as a Jewish state only cut across the 1948 Declaration of Independence, with its promise of equal rights for minorities. It made Druze feel like outsiders. Israeli Arab politicians have been part of the Knesset since the founding of the state, but have only very briefly been in government. The idea of having to fall behind the Israeli government when it is engaged in military operations against Palestinians would put them in an impossible position. Many have kith and kin across the Green Line and security barrier. Gantz has said he would be willing to work with the Arab parties. But as leading allies or an opposition block, it would be difficult to contemplate providing Mr Odeh and his team with access to intelligence and military briefings. Of more importance at present to Israeli Arabs is the social, equality and economic
agenda. In spite of being 20 percent of the population, they are greatly under-represented in government. Israeli Arabs have risen to the highest levels in economic development and the judiciary, but such appointments are the exception. The lack of presence in government jobs puts them at a disadvantage in making claims on state services from education to housing. Restrictive land use laws mean Israeli Arab villages find it difficult to expand beyond existing boundaries, creating a permanent housing crisis. Netanyahu often weaponised Israel’s Arabs as pawns claiming, as he did this time, the authorities needed cameras in Arab polling stations to prevent cheating. Gantz gave interviews to the Arab media and embraced its social media. This election offers hope that the Joint List and the wider population can be drawn closer into Israeli society. Israeli Arabs run many of the country’s pharmacies and are highly integrated in the healthcare system. If they are trusted to keep their Jewish neighbours healthy, social and political integration could go much further. That is a real message of hope, from an indecisive election result, for 5780. Jami Wellbeing on Campus
Let’s talk about Wellbeing
Student life is more rewarding than ever, with so many young adults now taking advantage of higher education and the life opportunities these years can yield. It’s three years when you can make amazing friends, stretch yourself academically and broaden your horizons meeting people from very different backgrounds and walks of life. University is an immersive experience. However, for many it can also be isolating and anxiety provoking. 21st Century technology means that with so many lectures and reading materials available online, some students can gain their degree by never leaving their room. Add to this, for many of the community’s students who felt very safe growing up and at high school, being let loose on campus can feel overwhelming as they are confronted by endless choices, new environments and adult decision making. Jami are working in partnership with UJS and University Jewish Chaplaincy to help cushion the move for our students from 6th Form to campus. We have appointed and trained Student Wellbeing Reps in Bristol, Birmingham and Leeds. From September 2019, these Reps will be out there on campus, able to enlighten and help guide new (and existing) students. The Reps will offer educational and social opportunities for Jewish students in which to make social connections and learn more about looking after their wellbeing, as well as being aware of the services available to support students.
Alongside these are working with who have come own programme connected.

For all students, supportive messaging, lifestyle tips, useful contacts and further information is available on our website www.jamiuk.org/campus and in our student ‘give-aways’. These include a very useful credit card sized Student Mental Health resource helping to make sure student life can be lived to the full. For those students for whom university continues to be overwhelming and demoralising, we encourage ‘health seeking behaviour’. This can include registering with a local GP and asking for help from student wellbeing and counselling services. Alongside these services students should make use of the incredible pastoral support offered by University Jewish Chaplains and the expertise of UJS. Together we hope we can create a safer, happier student life for our ambitious and hopeful undergraduates. Student Wellbeing Reps

Restoring furniture and mental health Developing a daily structure, re-engaging socially and returning to a working environment can be vital steps for someone recovering from mental ill health. Jami’s vocational team supports these steps, at the same time as creating work-place opportunities for people to learn new skills. By providing a programme of vocational and career supporting opportunities, Jami’s Social Enterprise offers an ambitious and broad range of commercial initiatives, within an environment which helps, not hinders, recovery. Jami’s social enterprise includes Head Room Café and vintage boutique in Golders Green, our eBay store and the new Upcycling workshop based in Borehamwood. Jami’s expert team support people to make a meaningful and valuable contribution to our local and wider community. Those engaged in the initiatives are helping to create a vitally sustainable income stream for Jami, enabling further investment in projects to support even more people on their journeys to recovery. The Upcycling programme is a perfect example – it takes unwanted items that could otherwise become landfill and transforms them into desirable furniture and decorative pieces.
Volunteers are actively involved in all aspects of the creative process, developing practical new skills and techniques from woodworking to upholstery. Creating unique items enables people recovering from mental illness to gain new confidence through personal achievement, essential for their continued wellbeing. In order to showcase and sell this work, Jami is opening a pop-up shop – Head Room Upcycling – in Mill Hill. Items available to buy include restored or redesigned furniture, handmade greetings cards, cushions and artworks. We look forward to welcoming the public to browse, shop and discover how to get involved in our social enterprise Upcycling projects.

Inspiring hope Sharon, a Jami service user, plagued by debilitating anxiety and panic attacks, was introduced to Alyson, a Jami Peer Support orker who worked with Sharon to help rebuild her confidence and self-esteem.
Hope is that border that lies between negativity and positivity, in that it is a seam heavily sewn uniting two pieces of cloth - Sharon, Jami Service User and Creative Writer
Sharon was an experienced project manager working within the IT industry, she lived independently, enjoyed walking and helped family and friends when needed. Mental illness was something she had never considered would affect her. It was while helping an elderly relative that her life changed. She fell head over heels three times down a flight of stairs fracturing her spine and hitting her head numerous times. She still finds it difficult to talk about this horrific accident. The head trauma and emotional impact had an immediate and long-lasting effect on her life.
“Mental illness could arrive on your doorstep at any time” Sharon’s confidence was shattered. Routine actions became a nightmare. Making a phone call, cleaning her flat and participating in conversations became impossible due to her debilitating anxiety and panic attacks, which led to her becoming reliant on her ageing parents and unable to work.
Sharon had heard of Jami but was unsure of how the organisation might be able to help her in her situation. She told us that she, “actually found the first call to Jami very easy as there was no judgement, no confrontation. The joy of Jami was finding people who understand… holding me up when I need extra support”
“I’m actually quite annoyed with my past self”, said Sharon with a grin, “mental illness could arrive on your doorstep at any time – you don’t know who will need the support of Jami and when, I never considered it. For me, the joy of Jami was finding people who understand. They are the walking stick for my mind, holding me up when I need extra support. They have given me hope”. A mutual appreciation for the written word led to Sharon joining a creative writing group at Jami’s Head Room Café. Alyson knows that writing in a safe group environment enables people to capture
thoughts and feelings that they would be unwilling to share through an open conversation. Sharon said “the feeling of accomplishment and liberation I’ve gained through writing has given me the courage to be around people again. I am so grateful for the writing group; it has brought me out of myself and I look forward to it so much.” The creative writing group now meets up independently on a regular basis. Sharon is not only participating in the group but also volunteering to lead a group of creative writers at Jami’s Finchley Hub. Jami provides practical help and support to recover a meaningful life to over 1300 people, like Sharon, every year.

Academic boycotts are a multi-headed Hydra ZVI ZIEGLER
CHAIR OF THE ISRAELI UNIVERSITIES’ FORUM TO COMBAT ACADEMIC BOYCOTTS
I
nitiatives calling for boycotts of Israeli academics or Israeli universities have not disappeared. They aren’t generally in public focus, and have, so far, caused limited damage to Israeli academia generally. The initiatives are seething behind the surface and resurface in unexpected places and in new forms. Like a multi-headed Hydra, when one head is cut off, two new heads are born. New tactics are employed by the would-be boycotter and the tactics used against them vary. Recent examples are described below. The initiatives were soundly defeated in the UK, where they started more than a decade ago. The UK university heads stated, unequivocally and unambiguously, that they support academic freedom and are opposed to academic boycotts. Boycotting individual academics based on their ethnic origin, citizenship or nationality was declared illegitimate by the most senior academic bodies. The efforts of the would-be
boycotters then moved to the US, where they tried to persuade the major professional associations to boycott Israeli universities. These efforts at boycotting institutions were initially successful in small to medium associations but, since 2014, were defeated in the major ones, the American Anthropological Association, the American Historical Association and the Modern Language Association, mainly owing to the deep involvement and major mobilisation of many US organisations and individuals and the unequivocal opposition of the associations of the heads of the US universities, enlisted by the association of the heads of Israeli universities. Efforts resurfaced recently. One of the two stories on which I will focus involves the European Network For Mental Health Service Evaluation (ENMESH). This network, which has Israeli members, holds biannual conferences. In the ENMESH 2019 conference, held in Lisbon in June, the Israeli proposal to host ENMESH 2021 in Jerusalem was approved by the board. Two weeks later, ENMESH chair, Professor Mike Slade of the University of Nottingham, wrote to all board members that,
❝
THE INITIATIVES ARE SEETHING BELOW THE SURFACE AND RESURFACE IN UNEXPECTED PLACES after receiving both praise and condemnation of the decision, he had decided to cancel it as the body would find it hard to deal with the negative anti-Israeli campaign. This could set a precedent. It made many scientists, in the UK and other European countries, furious. Top UK scientists, as well as many people from other countries, wrote letters of protest to all board members. Independently, Jonathan Turner, chief executive of UK Lawyers for Israel, fought the discriminatory act that violated UK laws by treating Israelis differently than others. Since the ENMESH director and several board members were UK based, the vice-chan-
cellors were also written to. Baroness Deech tabled questions in the House of Lords. The outcome of this coalition, who care for the future of academia and would not allow extraneous considerations to affect academic decisions, was the board’s replacement of the ENMESH chair, and a decision to reconsider the Israeli site. The second story involves the American Political Science Association (APSA), which supports academic freedom and opposes boycotts. In one of its sections, Foundations of Political Theory, the leadership wished to introduce a resolution boycotting Israeli academic institutions. An Israeli member alerted the political science Community in Israel, and the leadership of APSA reaffirmed that its bylaws do not allow votes on such a resolution, and only an informal discussion is allowed. Many American political scientists, including members of organisations that have consistently fought against boycotts, believing in the principles of free exchange of ideas and no discrimination, such as Academic Engagement Network and Scholars for Peace in the Middle East are set to join the discussion.

Giving new meaning to iconic synagogue MICHAEL MAIL
CHIEF EXECUTIVE, FOUNDATION FOR JEWISH HERITAGE
I
t was a mixture of fortune and feasibility that led an international Jewish heritage foundation based in the UK to buy a rundown old synagogue in the Welsh valleys. The journey taken by the Foundation for Jewish Heritage to Wales to Merthyr Tydfil, a town famous in part for the discovery of Viagra, was nothing if not eventful. But, first, an introduction. The Foundation was created in the UK to work internationally on the preservation of Jewish heritage, which faces profound challenges as a result of the great upheavals faced by the Jewish people in the past century. Vast migrations and the tragedy of the Holocaust led centuries-old historic sites to become orphaned. Without users, they remain in danger in many parts of the world. We decided to focus on synagogues, as the most emblematic buildings, repositories of Jewish life, art and customs. Many are unique and beautifully constructed, reflecting real architectural and artistic achievement.
We commissioned research to map all the historic synagogues of Europe, through which we identified 3,347 sites, less than a quarter of which are active today. As part of this work, we rated each synagogue according to its significance and its condition, to understand the most important buildings that were most in danger. Two scored very highly in the UK – and the former Merthyr Tydfil synagogue was for sale. The town was the industrial powerhouse of Wales in the 19th century and its largest town (Cardiff was then just a tiny port). The construction of the remarkable stone Gothic-styled synagogue in the 1870s reflected a growing and prospering Jewish community, but the 20th century story was one of economic decline, and Jews slowly left. The building was sold in 1983. It was later used for various purposes, including as a gym, but for the past 13 years it has lain empty, its condition deteriorating. Yet its importance remains, as the oldest purpose-built synagogue still standing in Wales, Grade II-listed and considered architecturally one of the most important shuls in the UK. We began thinking about new uses for it and
❝
WE HOPE TO SAVE AN IMPORTANT BUILDING AND HONOUR THE WELSH JEWISH COMMUNITY looked at the project underway to create a Scottish Jewish heritage centre based in the striking Garnethill Synagogue in Glasgow, with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) and Scottish government. It seemed obvious to create a similar initiative in Wales. We spoke to the South Wales Jewish community, the Welsh heritage community, and personalities in Merthyr itself, especially within the council. The feedback was resoundingly positive. We commissioned a feasibility study and tried to work out what the building could be used for. Innovative ideas emerged, reflecting the rich and special history of the 250+ year old Welsh Jewish community. Fundamentally, it confirmed that there was widespread interest
and support, and that the project was viable. In discussing the findings with the council, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney MP Gerald Jones, and the NHLF, it became clear the next stage was for the Foundation to buy the building. We commissioned building surveys, which indicated the synagogue was structurally sound. The sale went through last month. In making the purchase, the Foundation hopes to save an important nationally-recognised building to serve educational purposes, and to honour the Welsh Jewish community so there will always be one place that will tell its story. In preserving the heritage of the Jewish people, including buildings that were muchcherished centres of communal life, each a profound story and a precious legacy, we feel we are playing our part. It is important for the Jewish people to explain our past, which shapes our today and points the way to the future, and it is important for wider society, strengthening understanding and combating prejudice. In Merthyr we have taken what had become a vulnerable and meaningless building and begun a process to make it meaningful once again.

Northern Shoah centre gives survivors a voice EMMA KING
DIRECTOR, HOLOCAUST EXHIBITION AND LEARNING CENTRE
S
ince the Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre at Huddersfield University – northern England’s only such facility – opened a year ago, it has attracted more than 5,000 visitors. The centre features an interactive exhibition, Through Our Eyes, that presents the Holocaust narrative through the experiences of survivors. Stories of discrimination, persecution, concentration camps, escape and liberation are told through interactive touchscreens, followed by a digital memorial to local families and testimonies of how survivors of Nazi persecution rebuilt their lives in Yorkshire. Speakers at our anniversary celebration were Barbara Winton, whose late father Sir Nicolas Winton rescued almost 700 child refugees from Czechoslovakia, and Lady Milena GrenfellBaines, one of the children he saved. This was the first time the two speakers had been together at the same event, offering a
perspective of the child refugee alongside the thoughts of the man who arranged their safety. Barbara told how as a young stockbroker in London in 1938, her father became aware of the situation unfolding in Europe, with members of his own family fleeing Germany during the 1930s. While volunteering in Prague, he was deeply affected by the terrible conditions refugees from Nazism were living in. Children had little to eat or wear and were trying to keep warm in the freezing refugee camps. Certain that war was imminent, Sir Nicholas refused to wait to see if organisations taking children out of Austria and Germany
❝
NICHOLAS REFUSED TO WAIT FOR CZECHOSLOVAK CHILDREN TO BE RESCUED
could also help those in Czechoslovakia. He was given the go-ahead to organise trains to transport the children, on the premise that each had a foster home to go to, and that a £50 registration fee would be paid. Also taking part was Lady Milena GrenfellBaines, one of the children rescued from Prague aboard one of Winton’s trains. Lady Milena was born in Czechoslovakia in 1929. Her father fled the country the day before the Nazis invaded but had to leave his wife and children behind. Aged nine, Lady Milena and her younger sister Eva left on one of the eight trains and cared for by a family in England until their mother was able to escape a year later via Norway. The anniversary event was attended by members of the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association (HSFA), which campaigned for 20 years to get the project off the ground. Among these is Trude Silman. Trude fled her native Bratislava with her aunt and cousin by train aged nine. Her father was murdered in Auschwitz; however, her mother is classified as one of the two million people still missing. “In essence, I’m still searching for her,” she said.
For Trude, the centre is vital – a tangible record of the terrible events in history so that future generations might understand. “The exhibition serves as a palpable reminder of what happened, and what must never be allowed to perpetuate in the future,” said Trude. “Terrible things have happened in history for thousands of years, but for many, these are now consigned to the history books. What happened to us was real, it happened to real people whose families were torn apart; we lost our parents and had to make our own lives without them. “Tragically, we see similar situations today with refugees who are forced to flee their homelands. We are all human, we all have the same needs for food, shelter and a loving family, regardless of colour or creed.” Our next event is on 6 October, when Martin Kapel, who escaped aboard the Kindertransport in 1939, will explain the events that brought him to Britain and how he made a new life here. A group of 17 teenagers from Whitefield Synagogue’s batmitzvah programme attended their graduation ceremony after completing a year-long journey of monthly activities, such as decorating wood cuttings of their Hebrew names, performing a dance in a care home, and delivering Pesach gifts. Before the ceremony, the teens were partnered with a teacher to prepare with their families a dvar Torah on their parsha. At the ceremony, they each took on a mitzvah to recite Jewish prayers.

Sadie, 11, a pupil at Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth will celebrate her batmitzvah in November and was joined by her father, Justin. She said: “Each climb was tough for different reasons: Ben Nevis was very slippery and wet, Scafell Pike was easier but tough to get to the top because of the weather and Snowdon was a pretty steep climb for the last couple of hours – but I kept thinking about the ill children Camp Simcha helps who have it much harder every day.”

Film / Weekend Left: Dev Patel stars as a Sikh waiter fighting for survival at the Taj Hotel. Right: Jason Isaacs with Nazanin Boniadi
‘They were caught up in hell, but survived’ Francine Wolfisz speaks to Anthony Maras, director of Hotel Mumbai, which depicts the chilling terror attack on the city in 2008
T
he life of Moshe Holtzberg hung in the balance as a group of young jihadists stormed Mumbai’s Jewish community centre and executed a massacre of particular brutality. Of the six lives taken at the Nariman Chabad House on 26 November 2008, four were visitors from Israel and America, while the other two were Moshe’s parents, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, who ran the centre. While the unthinkable happened around her, the couple’s Indian nanny frantically swept up their two-year-old son in her arms and fled from the violence – a selfless act of courage that ultimately spared his life and allowed Moshe, now 13, to celebrate his barmitzvah only a few weeks ago. The tragic attack on the Chabad centre was just one among a series of coordinated acts of terrorism that kept Mumbai a city under siege over four days. More than 160 people from over a dozen countries were murdered at a restaurant, train station and hospital, as well as a cinema and three hotels – including the renowned five-star Taj Hotel. It was here that remarkably all but 32 of the 500 people caught up in a siege managed to survive – “a near miracle” that Anthony Maras (pictured inset) has retold in Hotel Mumbai, his gripping directorial debut, which is released in cinemas and will be available on Sky Cinema from tomorrow (Friday). Based on the real events, the film shows how people of all classes, nationality, race and religion came together against the gunmen. Among the hotel staff is renowned chef Hemant Oberoi (played by Anupam Kher) – who in real life is credited with helping save hundreds
of lives by escorting guests to a more secure area of the Taj Hotel – and a gentle Sikh waiter, played by Dev Patel, while the throng of guests includes a desperate couple (Armie Hammer and Nazanin Boniadi), who are fearful over what might become of their newborn child. The stellar cast also includes British-Jewish actor and Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs as a steely Russian millionaire who seems only interested in protecting himself, but ultimately shows enormous courage in the face of danger. Australian-Greek director Maras, who also co-wrote the script, says he was inspired to retell the tragic events after watching a documentary, Surviving Mumbai and was struck by the “selflessness, courage and resilience of people who were perfect strangers”. Speaking during a visit to London this week ahead of the hotly-anticipated film’s release, Maras tells me: “What was unique about the Taj was that you had regular, everyday people, who were caught up in a kind of hell – and they really had no one else to turn to but each other. “There were so many examples of hotel staff laying down their lives for fellow staff members, as well as for guests. “There was an Australian group of tourists, who had fire literally licking their backs and everything in sight was burning – and yet they very calmly and patiently lowered one another down and out of the hotel using knotted bedsheets as makeshift ropes from windows. “They and others inspired me to explore
this subject more and ultimately make the film.” Maras spoke to more than 40 witnesses and survivors, over nearly 10 months of research. Among them was Karambir Kang, the general manager of the Taj Hotel, who lost his wife and two children during the attacks, as well as two survivors, who like the main protagonists in the film, were wrought with anxiety trying to keep their young child out of harm’s way. While “not a direct inspiration”, Maras also researched the attack on the Chabad centre and the incredible bravery of Sandra Samuel, the nanny who saved Moshe Holtzberg’s life. Describing his “shock” over the details of that attack, Maras says: “It was particularly horrific what happened at Chabad, because no one was spared, literally anyone who was seen was taken out. There was an especially strong ferocity against the people at Chabad and it was really tragic.” But in the face of adversity, Holtzberg survived – and so, too, did the majority of those trapped inside the Taj Hotel. It is this fact alone, says Maras, which sends “a strong message” about the legacy of the Mumbai attacks, nearly 11 years on. “Hotel Mumbai is an extraordinary story of people working across many different divisions to come together to survive what seems impossible, to survive true horror. “We live in polarised times, with very troubling examples of racism, nationalism and division across the world but, at the Taj Hotel, people from every race and ethnicity came together and were there for one another. That was really how they survived.” Hotel Mumbai (15) is in cinemas and available on Sky Cinema from tomorrow (Friday)

Ahead of the new series of The Apprentice, Lord Sugar posted a classic clip on his social media showing the infamous kosher chicken debacle in Marrakesh from 2008. Let loose around the markets of Morocco, self-professed “nice Jewish boy” Michael Sophocles and his team-mates brought back a halal chicken instead of one with a hechsher, as Lord Sugar had asked for, leaving the no-nonsense peer “flabbergasted” and questioning whether Sophocles was indeed Jewish. When the intimidated candidate failed to respond quickly enough, Lord Sugar quipped: “If you’re unsure, we can always pull your trousers down and check.” The Apprentice begins next Wednesday, 9pm, on BBC One.
Address Unknown First published in 1938, Address Unknown by Kathrine Kressman Taylor is a hauntingly prescient tale about the growing dangers of fascism and antisemitism in Europe, as told through a series of letters exchanged between a Jew in America and his German friend. The short novel was met with immediate success after publication in English – but was banned in Europe by the Nazis. Today, Kressman Taylor’s work is an international bestseller, which has been translated into more than 20 languages and is described by the New York Times Book Review as “the most effective indictment of Nazism to appear in fiction”. Address Unknown by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor is published by Serpent’s Tail, priced £7.99 (paperback and eBook). Available now.

But first he’ll have to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School. To get elected student body president, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully-crafted image. This sly satire offers a rare glimpse into just what it takes to make a politician. The star-studded cast also includes Jessica Lange, Zoey Deutch, and Bette Midler. Louisa Walters discovers the beauty of the little-known Shipston-on-Stour in the Cotswolds
T
he Cotswolds. I know what you’re thinking. “Been there, done that, got the chocolate box with the picture of the chocolate box town.” But I bet you haven’t been to this place. Shipston-on-Stour, on the edge of the Cotswolds between Chipping Norton and Stratford-upon-Avon, is a sleepy haven that has been a regional winner in The Times’ Best Place to Live guide two years running. It has all the characteristics of the Cotswolds – rows of cute cottages, a pretty high street with cutesy shops, traditional tea rooms, a lovely restaurant and a village feel. It even has a Co-op and free parking. But it doesn’t have hordes of tourists, and pretty much everyone we spoke to during our visit was a local. The Bower House is a Grade II listed building in the centre of the town. Owner Andrew Knight, proprietor of the town’s Taste of the Country deli, has lived in the area for 25 years and always felt it lacked a good restaurant. When two shops next to his deli closed down, he bought them and turned them into the kind of place he’d like to eat and stay. The restaurant has a series of interlinked rooms, each with its own character, while upstairs there are five gorgeous bedrooms and bathrooms. The panelled walls of the entrance and bar area are a vibrant kingfisher blue, while the main dining area walls are a rich claret red, interspersed with brickwork and Cotswold stone. An eclectic mix of prints and paintings cover the walls, while the mismatched furniture sits atop a mix of flagstone, wood and tiled floors. Our bedroom was large and lovely, overlooking the high street. A beautiful polished dark wood floor was the backdrop to a combination of antique, vintage and contemporary furniture, while glorious bold patterned fabrics by British designers brought the room to life. The huge custom-made bed assured an incredibly comfortable night’s sleep after a nightcap from the in-room ‘bar’ – a pretty antique table bearing a silver tray laden with local craft alcohol and pretty cut glasses. An enormous bathroom with roll-top bath,

double freestanding sinks, a walk-in shower and the most stunning unusual duck egg blue tiles was a revelation. No wonder CN Traveller magazine named The Bower House one of the UK’s most exciting new restaurants with rooms. On Saturday night, the restaurant was heaving with locals, many of whom were greeted by name. The menu is gastropub-meets-bistro, with a range of tantalising sharing boards, such as whole baked camembert and a stunning section of breads from the deli next door, which we enjoyed with locally-brewed gin and whisky. I had plump Evesham asparagus with poached duck egg and crispy shallots, followed by sea bass with roast baby fennel and a straw
potato crisp. My partner went for the tuna and cod ceviche with wasabi sesame dressing and we shared a superb creamed spinach with pine nuts and parmesan and pil pil cauliflower with harissa mayonnaise. We finished with a white chocolate mousse with apple sorbet and cinnamon crumble, and poached peach with chocolate ‘soil’ and peach sorbet. The Bower House has a great vibe on a Sunday morning too. Breakfast is included for overnight guests, and is so reasonably priced that the locals are drawn in. Eggs any style with toast are just £4.50; with smoked salmon another £3. Full veggie breakfast is only £6.50. The coffee is good, the juice is fresh,

There was plenty to do around the area, even without visiting the Cotswold villages. SEDRA Netzavim BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN This week’s parsha always falls before Rosh Hashanah, providing context and setting the tone for the upcoming festival. There are many reasons given for this synchronisation, but there is one that I find particularly compelling. ‘’I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. You shall choose life, so that you and your offspring will live.’’ (Devarim 30:19) The late Rabbi Noah Weinberg, founder of Aish Hatorah, used to his students to explain it. What kind of a statement is this, ‘’choose life in order that you should live’’? How many of us actively choose death? He would explain that we are always confronted with escape routes that stop us engaging fully with our responsibilities. People daydream, incessantly check their phones, not just to read messages, but even just to see if they have a new one. On an even more serious level, there are no shortage of people who turn to drink and drugs as a way of escaping. He would say that killing time is suicide on an instalment plan. And suicide is the most drastic and final form of escape. The reason why we read this parsha before Rosh Hashanah is to tell us to wake up and smell the coffee! To engage with life rather than escape from it. Rosh Hashanah is the day when we stand in the dock, our lives are under scrutiny and we are asked to justify our existence. Rosh Hashana is indeed a celebration, the festival of being accountable, of leading a meaningful and fulfilled life.

What’s in a number?
BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND If a number can define Judaism, it is One: “Hear O Israel; Hashem is our God, Hashem is One” – a simple mantra that has almost come to define our history. Whether as a central part of the daily pulse of our liturgy, on the lips of those prepared to sacrifice their lives in God’s name, or as the focus of innumerable philosophical debates, the Unity of God – “One, Alone, Unified” – was the value that gave us a connection to the past, confidence in the present and hope for the future. No wonder the second day of Creation – the move away from a Universe of Oneness – was so utterly terrifying. It was the day of separation: Heaven and Earth became distinct realms. Heaven – shamayim – is so-called according to our Sages as it is the coming
together of two Hebrew words - “Esh v’mayim” – fire and water, justice and kindness, destructive energy together with the

basis for life. The Zohar describes the terrifying nature of the day of division: “It is the day rooted in the powers of limitations: the day on which Hell was created, that was formed from the fires of limitations…” Astonishingly, we find that two is also the source of blessing: the Torah itself begins with Beit, the second letter. The very word for blessing – Beracha – is comprised of beit, which represents two, chaf, which represents 20 and reish, which represents 200. All the twos: a multiplicity of multiples, the conduit of Divine Blessing that graces our existence. Duplicity is the very paradox of existence: rooted in Divinity, yet with a space that God makes for us. This space can feel very empty – torn from God, separate, alone. Yet this space allows us to be – and in being we can dedicate our being to others. In living for others – and the Ultimate Other – we can reveal the Ultimate Unity in everything. The Bible Says What?
What next for Israel after another election deadlock?
‘We have the power to change our destiny ’
The prayer Unetane Tokef is one of the most profound, and yet perplexing prayers of the Ashkenazi High Holy Days liturgy. It sets the background of the heavenly court that will judge all sinners during those days. The words above are the key of this poem. They come after a long list of pairs describing our fate for the coming year: On Rosh Hashanah they will be written down, and on Yom Kippur they will be sealed. How many will pass on, and how many will be born? Who at their end, and who not at their end? Who by fire and who by water? The “decree” talked about is the fate that is supposedly sealed on Yom Kippur. We are told that via repentance, prayer and good deeds one may soften it, ie we have the
power to change our own destiny. Judaism has always tried to reconcile two ideas that seem irreconcilable. Mishna Avot 3:15 says: “Everything is foreseen, yet free will is given”. Berachot 33b expresses the same idea: “Everything is the hand of God, except the fear of God”. For today’s Liberal Jew, this passage of Unetane Tokef tells us it is not what you say that matters, but what you do. We can utter thousands of words of prayers during the High Holy Days, but our actions have the final word. Repentance, return, tefillah (which comes from a root meaning “to judge”) and good deeds may change the course of our life. But, ultimately, death is a natural process and the universal law for all living creatures.
Rabbi Dr René Pfertzel serves Kingston Liberal Synagogue
Everything has changed and nothing has changed. The second election to the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) in 2019 produced results that were not spectacularly different to the first time around. There is still stark division within Israeli society about the best way forward and no one with a clear and convincing mandate to chart the course ahead. This election was designed to break the deadlock that resulted from the last election, but it has not really achieved that goal. The result also seems different. All the talk now is about the possibility of a national “unity” government – an oddly familiar scenario having personally lived in Jerusalem during the national unity government of Sharon and Peres. In a political landscape bitterly divided, a hope for unity is one to hold onto. After all, shalom, meaning peace, also shares a root

with completion and wholeness. While for many years, narrow, sectional interests have dominated Israeli politics, we must hope the commitment to unity extends beyond a catchphrase. It cannot be a narrow unity, or a facade of unity. Israel’s government must be one for all of its citizens, which cares for all people under its control. As the Jewish state, Israel should

If we are going to talk of a government of unity, it must genuinely follow that most Jewish tradition of valuing all the differences in society. Making predictions about Israeli politics is a hopeless task and, while the election has passed, we still have no idea for certain what will happen next. Join Altermans Solicitors as a Consultant Over the last three years, six of us have joined Altermans as consultants – to work in property, company commercial, litigation, private client and family law. All of us have been partners elsewhere, and know the pain of running a team, hitting chargeable targets and driving revenue. However, each of us knew deep down that what we wanted to do was find somewhere where we could work for our clients in a friendly and supportive environment. We found it at Altermans in Finchley, North London. The firm is run by Gabriel Alterman, who is growing a business where lawyers can work on their own or build a small team that meets their needs. The firm is not a “virtual network”. We work together, talk together and respect each other’s expertise. We share fees, reward each other for referrals, and have regular gatherings – both social and work – to make sure we’re on track. If this sounds like a firm where you could find a niche and be at home, get in touch to arrange a chat and come and meet us. There’s no management-speak; just lawyers working together. You can contact Gabriel directly at gabriel@altermans.co.uk or by phone on 07794 085 617. Our website is at www.altermans.co.uk for more details of the firm.

KKL EXECUTOR AND TRUSTEE COMPANY Dear Carolyn My aunt died recently, aged 89. Her will is being contested by a cousin of mine, who claims she was not ‘of sound mind’ when she signed it. What can I do to stop a challenge being made in the future to my wilI? Sarah Dear Sarah There have been cases on this
going back to Victorian times when a judge set out some guidelines as to ‘testamentary capacity’ – the level of understanding required to make a will. Condensed into modern, plain language they are: understanding the act and consequences of making a will as well as the scope of one’s assets; being aware of people one would usually be expected to leave something to (even if one chooses not to) and being of sound mind. More recent cases have established undue pressure or coercion as grounds for overturning a will, but the burden of proof is on the person asserting such a claim and it is not always easy to prove. In the case of your aunt, she is the star witness, but she is not there to give
evidence on her own behalf. She could have obtained a report from her GP at the time she made her will as to her testamentary capacity. Advising someone to do this is known as the ‘golden rule’ in the legal world, and there is a form of letter to the doctor agreed by the medical and legal professions. It may not have prevented a challenge, but it may have helped defeat one by giving your aunt a voice when she otherwise would not have had one. A doctor’s report can therefore be a useful measure.

Microsoft periodically stops providing updates and support for its older operating systems. So long as you’ve been accepting the Windows updates when they have come out, all of the security issues will have been patched already. I don’t recommend upgrading to Windows 10 on an older machine as some of the components might not have new drivers. It is best to have
routine maintenance run on the computer. For this, we clean up unnecessary files, update browsers and look at increasing the RAM. This is the best way to extend the life of a computer. After about five years, you should look at replacing a computer before a major component fails, and any new computer will come with Windows 10 and a fresh warranty. Feel free to book in your clean up.

National Citizen Service (NCS) NCS is a three-week programme that takes place in the summer after GCSEs. After an adventure and skills week young people plan and implement a 30 hour social action project. Meeting the needs of both kosher and halal requirements, JLGB runs a faith sensitive version of NCS, which is open to young people of all faiths and none.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award JLGB provides a Kosher and Sabbath-friendly Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) provision. The Award encourages young people to volunteer regularly, showing the importance of continuous action. Participants must complete at least 1 hour of volunteering every week to achieve the 3 award levels: Bronze (3 months), Silver (6 months) and Gold (12 months).
vinspired Award The vinspired Award is nationally recognised by UCAS and is a great addition to young people’s CVs. evolve Volunteering Fairs allow local charities to showcase their student friendly volunteering opportunities through the evolve platform. Through skills and interest matching, young people pick any number of volunteering opportunities to complete their award for either 10, 50 or 100 hours.
