‘Who shall live, who shall die?’
Yom Kippur prayer
VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS It doesn’t matter if you’re a devoted shul-goer or twice-a-year Jew, finding out about a terror attack on a synagogue while you’re in synagogue during Yom Kippur triggers the same thoughts and inflicts the same wounds: Jews shot for being Jews; it could have been here; it happened to be there. It feels like being at the scene of the crime. Wednesday’s deadly shootings in Halle were shocking but not surprising. There has been a chilling rise in attacks on Jews in cities like Copenhagen, Brussels, Toulouse and particularly Paris, where Jewish people and property are now casual targets for blind hate. A recent EU poll of 16,000 European Jews found 40 percent have considered fleeing. The UK terror threat is ever-present but, mercifully, British Jews don’t contend with the same level of menace, despite figures for the first six months of 2019 showing a record 892 reported antisemitic incidents. The Govern-
ment has increased its annual financial commitment to Jewish security to £14million. This funds equipment and staffing costs to protect schools and community centres, where security gates and guards, barbed wire fences, even blast doors, are commonplace. But money alone is not enough. The government should also give police greater powers to deal with racially-motivated violence and courts greater freedom to wield stiff penalties to deter the next delinquent intent on chucking a brick through a shul window, or worse. The Halle attack is another grievous lesson in how racism rapidly moves from the web to the real world. Like the Christchurch mosque killer, one of the terrorists wore a webcam to live-stream the carnage and was no doubt inspired by conspiracy sites and blogs. It’s also a painful reminder of the ever-present threat from the far-right at a time when Jews have been focused on the antisemitism of the far-left (Ken Livingstone hasn’t blamed the Yom Kippur attack on the actions of the Israel government yet. We hope he’s OK). No matter how dire the statistics, British Jews define themselves not by antisemitism but the contribution they make to British life. Despite our self-confidence, Halle will have dealt another serious blow to our sense of security. Full story, page 2

News / Yom Kippur attack
‘We have Halle in our hearts’ British Jewish groups reacted with shock this week after a heavily-armed assailant tried to force his way into a synagogue in Germany during Yom Kippur, then shot two people to death in an attack live-streamed on a popular gaming website, writes Mathilde Frot. The suspect, named in German media as 27-year-old Stephan Balliet, shot a woman in the street after failing to enter the synagogue and then entered a nearby kebab shop where he killed another person before fleeing. He said before the shooting that Jews were “the root” of “problems” such as feminism and “mass immigration”, according to a group that tracks online extremism. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis tweeted: “The tragic reality is that wherever there are Jews, hatred is never far away. I pay tribute to all those who routinely place themselves in harm’s way to protect Jewish communities all over the world.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl deplored the “far-right motivated murder perpetrated on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews, against innocent worshippers as well as diners in a restaurant.” Simon Johnson, chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council, lamented the “tragic loss of life” and extended his gratitude to security organisations such as the CST that “worked so hard today to keep our community safe.” The CST itself expressed “deepest sympathy” to the families, friends and communities “of those murdered and injured”.

John Mann, the Government’s new antisemitism tsar, said his “thoughts are with the Jewish community in this country and especially those who live in Germany.” “This isn’t an isolated incident and the number of antisemitic murders have grown significantly across Europe over the last three years,” he added. “Whenever a Jewish person feels unsafe and
SHUL HAD BEEN TOLD: NO SERIOUS THREAT Congregants of the Halle synagogue targeted on Yom Kippur were previously told there was “no acute threat” when members demanded police protection, an eyewitness has claimed. A heavily-armed attacker shot at the locked door of the synagogue in Halle, where some 80 worshippers were gathered to celebrate Judaism’s holiest day. The assailant was unable to enter the building but killed two people nearby and several more were injured in the attack, which also targeted a kebab shop and was live-streamed on the gaming platform Twitch. Eyewitness Anastassia Pletoukhina, who was in the synagogue during the attack, told the Jüdische Allgemeine newspaper it was “the longest 20 minutes” of her life. “It was miracle that we survived. It was really, very close. The windows are made of
normal glass, the offender would only have had to shoot in and he would have been inside and it would have been a bloodshed,” she said in German. Pletoukhina, whose husband helped barricade the front door, said it was “a scandal” the shul had not been placed under police protection on Yom Kippur, echoing calls in the community for greater security to prevent future attacks. She revealed the shul’s security guard was an untrained volunteer and claimed the community had demanded police protection on several occasions but were repeatedly told there was “no acute threat.” The head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany told AFP: “It is scandalous that the synagogue in Halle is not protected by police on a holiday like Yom Kippur. “This negligence has now been bitterly repaid.”
vulnerable as they make their way to the synagogue or carrying out their daily it’s for us to stand with them and call out the racists, root out the extremists and use all the necessary powers to stop the terrorists.” The representative group for European Jewry said the attack should “send shock waves in Germany and beyond” and that more needs to be done to combat radicalisation.
“We need to do more to guarantee these types of attacks do not happen again, by combatting radicalisation, creating tougher law enforcement measures and putting more resources into educating towards tolerance,” said European Jewish Congress President Dr Moshe Kantor. Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac Herzog said the “entire world sees and hears what is happening and must understand that there can be no compromise in the fight against hatred of Jews and antisemitism.” “We share in the mourning of the families whose loved ones were murdered, wish the wounded a speedy recovery and send strength to the worshippers and members of the community who are in deep mourning,” he added. United Synagogue’s Rabbi Nicky Liss said: “Attacking Jews at prayer is an act of despicable cruelty and cowardice, and particularly shocking on Yom Kippur. We wishlong life to the families of those murdered and pray for a speedy recovery for the injured.” The Reform Movement’s senior Rabbi Janner-Klausner called for action, tweeting on Wednesday evening: “Our newly-replenished hearts, minds and souls after Yom Kippur ache in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Halle. It’s time to replace incendiary language with careful words, hatred with love and fear with safety. Now is the time. Now is the time.”

Williamson loses bid to YK motion ‘out of order’ be let back into Labour Suspended MP Chris Williamson has lost his bid to be reinstated to Labour after he was suspended over allegations of antisemitism, writes Mathilde Frot. Williamson was first suspended in February over comments about Labour’s handling of antisemitism complaints and readmitted with a formal warning in June. The decision, which followed a hearing of a National Executive Committee antisemitism panel, sparked outrage from MPs, peers and Jewish groups. Williamson was suspended again days later after a second panel reviewed the decision to reinstate him. Labour also imposed a separate suspension on September 3 over additional allegations of misconduct. Justice Pepperall ruled on Thursday that “the Labour Party acted unfairly in that there was no proper reason for reopening the case against Mr Williamson”. However, the judge found that there was “nothing in the new allegations, the timing of the letter of 3 September or the decision to suspend that entitles me to take the view upon the papers that the Labour Party is acting either unfairly or other than in good faith”.

He added: “I therefore refuse relief in respect of Mr Williamson’s recent re-suspension. The new disciplinary case must run its course.” The MP took to Twitter to react to the court’s verdict on Thursday, writing: “I know this will be a bitter disappointment to everyone who has supported me in this case. “I’m outraged that membership subscriptions given by our loyal activists have been used to pay legal fees. I’m outraged that I’ve had to resort to legal means to achieve justice. “This is a damning indictment of our party’s internal disciplinary procedures, which require a total overhaul – towards a fairer, more independent and more democratic system. My suspension must now be lifted.” A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The court has upheld Chris Williamson’s suspension from the Party and has said his disciplinary case must run its course.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl welcomed the High Court’s rejection of Williamson’s bid for reinstatement but called for his expulsion “without any further delay.”

Jewish News meets... Rory Stewart
Rory’s by Jenni Frazer jenni@jennifrazer.com @Jennifrazer
Politician Rory Stewart is said to speak up to 11 languages, but until now Yiddish has not featured on the list. And yet Stewart, one of 21 MPs thrown out of the Conservative Party over Brexit disagreements, and who has now declared his intention to run as Mayor of London in 2020, has promised to learn Yiddish — a pledge made to Jewish News in the wake of his first walkabout in the Jewish community. Stewart, who came fifth in his bid to become leader of the Conservatives earlier this year, became famous for his #RoryWalks campaign, during which he would pitch up around the UK and talk to people – something that has become unusual for many politicians. He has now put that experience to good use in his meetthe-people encounters, and last Monday he visited Golders Green and the Jewish community centre for London, JW3. For those who think of him

JLC CHIEF NAMED NEW RUGBY LEAGUE BOSS The chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) has said it is “almost the greatest honour of my life” to have been appointed chairman of the Rugby Football League (RFL), writes Mathilde Frot. Simon Johnson has been serving as interim chair of the RFL since Brian Barwick stepped down in July. Johnson, who was formerly a senior lawyer with the Premier League and director of corporate affairs at the FA, has more than 20 years’ experience in the industry. He told Jewish News: “I was absolutely thrilled [when I found out]. Simon Johnson with Prince Harry at Wembley I considered it almost to be the greatest honour of my life to have been is perceived in the way it should be, that it’s respected throughout the sports industry appointed to do this. “When I got it, I considered such a thrill, and the government,” he added. schlep to City Hall only as an Old Etonian who worked as a diplomat, spent time working in Afghanistan and Iraq, and was once tutor to Princes William and Harry, there was a surprise — because Rory Stewart has a fascinating Jewish family history. His Jewish great-grandparents came from what was Romania and became Austro-Hungary. His great-grandmother lived in Suceava, and her husband was living in what was the Ottoman Empire. “They both moved to New York in 1880 and to London in 1900. My Jewish greatgrandfather had a number of businesses spread across Europe, and from his letters, I found that he spoke Yiddish and German and Romanian, probably a smattering of Turkish, but also certainly French and English.” Stewart’s great-grandfather and his son corresponded in “a mixture of Yiddish and English right up until the 1930s, when my great-grandfather died”. Laughing, he said: “I don’t really speak any Yiddish, but it would be a good thing to focus on.” There is another reason for his empathy with the Jewish community: his New Yorkraised wife, Shoshana, is Jewish. So Stewart had an interesting calling-card with which to meet members of the Jewish community and hear their concerns. In his visit, co-ordinated by the Jewish Leadership
Rory with Raymond Simonson at JW3
Council (JLC), he was introduced to leaders of JLC member organisations, such as the London Jewish Forum, Jami, Mitzvah Day, the Union of Jewish Students (UJS) and JW3. But — being Rory Stewart – he was keen to get out on the street in Golders Green and hear the concerns of potential voters in the mayoral election. He also visited Carmelli Bakery for the by now traditional smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, which he wolfed down in his campaign car, after buying some kosher gingerbread men to take home to his two small children. Stewart was, he said, “in listening mode”, adding that the major anxieties of Jewish voters, about their security, was of primary
importance. “The job of mayor, I think, is to provide good transportation, a clean environment, and to ensure that people feel safe.” He seemed appalled when JW3 chief executive Raymond Simonson told him of the half a million pound annual budget needed to provide security for the centre; and he was plainly moved by his conversation with UJS president Esther Offenberg and sabbatical officer Bradley Langer, who told him about the high levels of antisemitic abuse on some university campuses. He said he was not yet ready to provide a quick-fix response to the problem of antisemitism. “The really honest answer is that I need to spend more time listening and learning. I think there are easy answers, but they are probably not full answers.” Asked if he had been aware of the level of antisemitism, Stewart said he believed “one of the things which hasn’t worked is British reporting of this”. He continued: “Frequently, the details are never quite put across clearly enough. I was asked by a non-British friend to explain about antisemitism in Britain and I pulled up a number of articles – I kept finding that, for whatever reason, journalists didn’t feel comfortable citing individual cases.” But he had now spoken to a former Labour councillor who had told him about groups of
people “sitting at the back of meetings and muttering under their breath about Jews – or shouting Jewish speakers down. It’s so important to speak out against this.” Stewart, who has visited Israel “many times”, made it clear he did not think it was the business of a London mayor to make foreign policy. “The role of a mayor is to champion their city, and to represent the city on the international stage, and get investment by leading trade delegations,” he said. “I continue to support the two-state solution [for Israel and the Palestinians], but at the same time worry about whether it’s achievable. But I don’t really approve of a mayor being involved in foreign policy. My whole philosophy in life is to begin with the local issues, the ones I can actually affect and solve.” In Golders Green, Stewart said the issues raised had been crime and house prices. “I was also very struck by people’s sense of whether or not they could identify as Jews in the street,” he said. With a grin, Stewart revealed that he had already learned “of the huge part played by food in the Jewish community. A number of people have very kindly invited me to their homes already”. He now plans to build on his new contacts by working with Mitzvah Day in November and is set to speak at JW3 in the coming months.

Demand for services from the community’s citizens’ advice bureau has more than doubled in the past year, an annual report has found. Paperweight supports those in the community at a time of crisis, with more than 160 volunteer caseworkers offering guidance on financial, legal, welfare and benefits issues. The report, published last week, found demand rose sharply across all services in the past year, with more than 1,000 cases between July 2018 and July 2019. There were around 146
cases in the past year that dealt with help with welfare and benefits, compared with 70 the previous year. The introduction of Universal Credit and the change to Personal Independence Payments were among significant changes affecting demand, the report found. Meanwhile, demand for support with family law cases doubled to 68 cases from 34 the previous year. According to the report, owing to the “almost total abolition of legal aid in the family and matrimonial courts, an
ever-increasing number of applicants are faced with the daunting task of representing themselves by acting in person”. The latest figures suggest the community is not exempt from broader societal changes, the charity’s chair Benjamin Conway and CEO Bayla Perrin said. “The cuts in social services, increased longevity and longterm societal trends, such as the rising divorce rate, have all contributed to the growth in demand for our support,” the two said.

Extinction Rebellion Khan tribute to take succah to demo Cable St heroes Climate change protesters were due to take a succah to the streets of central London last night, as demonstrations intensify in the capital, writes Mathilde Frot. Six rabbis were expected to join Extinction Rebellion Jews, including Senior Masorti Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg and Reform Judaism’s Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers. The gathering is expected to feature music and speeches while Extinction Rebellion kippot will be printed and handed out to protesters. Dozens of Facebook users have already confirmed attendance to the gathering at 6pm in Trafalgar Square. “This Succot, we face up to this truth and resource ourselves to try to build a future, one deeply connected with nature, just like the walls

and covering of the succah,” read the Facebook event listing. Wittenberg urged the community to join in the fight against climate change, saying: “There are many, many ways to take action. The most important one is to change our own habits and the way we consume, to use green energy, to avoid buying plastic, to eat less meat, to fly less, but also [...] to make it clear to politicians and leaders across industry, finance and politics that this is an issue ordinary people care about passionately and deeply.” Young-Somers, who was due to light a memorial candle to remember the victims of the Yom Kippur attack in Halle, Germany, told Jewish News: “Those attending will get a fantastic start to their engagement with Succot and learn about how we can really embody the values of the festival and embrace a world that acknowledges our interconnectedness to nature.” “Although we might think we’re quite safe in our north-west London bubble, we’re going to be impacted too. People are dying every day as a result of climate change, and it is one of the most serious crises. Our leaders haven’t been listening.” She added: “It’s an incredible opportunity to grab this moment of teaching and to look at how we as Jews, sitting in our cosy succah, eating off plastic plates, are making the problem worse.”
Protesters stood up to fascists in Cable Street in 1936
London Mayor Sadiq Khan was among those to pay tribute to Cable Street veterans who “courageously stood up to Oswald Mosley’s fascists” 83 years ago. The date 4 October 1936 entered the annals of history when thousands of antifascists came out to block Mosley’s Blackshirt march in London’s East End. “Today we commemorate the Battle of Cable Street – which saw hope triumph over hate when Jewish Londoners and others courageously stood up to Mosley’s fascists,” Khan wrote on Twitter.
“As mayor, I’ll continue to stand up to racism and fascism,” he added. Khan’s message, retweeted by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, also featured a newsreel detailing the day’s events shared by the antiracism charity Hope Not Hate. Joining a chorus of tributes, the Jewish Labour Movement tweeted a link to a speech given by its vice chair, Sarah Sackman, on the 80th anniversary of the event. “The thousands of ordinary Jews, Irish dockers, Labourites, Socialists, communists who gathered here to say: no to fascism,” Sackman said at the time.

School wins legal battle with Ofsted King David High School in Manchester has won its legal battle with Ofsted, after the inspectorate incorrectly issued it with a downgrade, writes Adam Decker. The school was inspected in May 2015 and rated ‘Outstanding’, but it was downgraded in June to ‘Inadequate’ over concerns about the separation of girls and boys in classes for more religious students. Following a challenge, Ofsted said it had “taken the very unusual step of giving consent to the quashing of the most recent inspection report” on the school.
“We have agreed with the school that, given the school’s particular arrangements, it was not open to us to conclude that there was unlawful direct discrimination on grounds of either sex or religion and belief, when comparing a pupil in either of the single-sex streams with a pupil in the main stream,” it said. “Quashing the report will allow us to re-inspect the school at an appropriate time, looking again at how it manages the separation of pupils by sex and assessing the education it provides against our new inspection framework.”

News / Robinson’s warning / Prince’s message
JEWISH MPS ARE BEING ‘DRIVEN OUT’ OF LABOUR Broadcaster Nick Robinson this week warned “MPs are being driven out for being Jewish” and issued a scathing condemnation of still suspended Labour MP Chris Williamson, writes Richard Ferrer. The BBC Today programme presenter delivered his uncompromising message in a keynote speech at the Holocaust Educational Trust’s (HET) annual dinner at the Guildhall on Monday evening. Referring to Williamson, the Derby North MP suspended in February after claiming Labour had been “too apologetic” over antisemitism, Robinson said: “Chris Williamson told me on the Today Programme
he’s never seen antisemitism in the Labour Party. Well, I’ve seen it Chris, the people in the Labour Party fighting it have seen it Chris, and we will never stop pointing it out.” Robinson also reflected on the last time he addressed HET’s annual dinner, saying: “I wish I could say things have improved since I last spoke at this event 10 years ago. In the last decade we have seen deniers distort and misappropriate facts, and politicians targeted and driven out of their political homes for being Jewish. We live in an era of tribalism in which rage is in danger of replacing rationality.” Reflecting on what he’s learned

from TV presenter Rachel Riley, who’s faced a torrent of abuse for proudly identifying as Jewish, Robinson added: “Don’t feed the trolls. Don’t condemn, don’t engage, just ignore. Learn from the HET – trust in Holocaust education. What makes the HET so special is it doesn’t use the Holocaust as a weapon to win an argument, it uses the sheer power of seeing and hearing the memories of those who suffered.” Hailing HET’s chief executive Karen Pollock “a force of nature”, he joked: “Only Karen could have

Wills: Survivors help us learn and grow Prince William wrote of the “essential understanding” Holocaust survivors and educators provide to society. In a message to the Holocaust Educational Trust’s appeal dinner in London’s Guildhall on Monday, the Duke of Cambridge expressed gratitude to survivors who shared their testimony “for the rest of us to learn and to grow.” “I know, through my own experience of
meeting Holocaust survivors, that being confronted by the reality of what took place cements an essential understanding,” Prince William wrote. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met survivors in 2017 during their visit to the former Nazi concentration camp at Stutthof, during a three-day tour of Poland. “As we approach the 75th anniversary of the liberation of BergenBelsen by the Prince William
British Army, I want to applaud your unyielding commitment and passion,” Prince William continued. “I especially want to command all your youth ambassadors, and wish them lucky as they pick up the vital mantle to ensure these stories continue,” he added. Last year, Prince William unveiled a statue in the Midlands town of Stourbridge of Frank Foley honouring the British spy who saved 10,000 Jews. The Duke visited Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, accompanied by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, last year.

Charity manager backs smack ban
Smacking children should be outlawed across the UK according to a senior Norwood manager, writes Mathilde Frot. The charity’s work and family support manager April Esteras said she would “absolutely” support a smacking ban across the United Kingdom. “I would be in favour of the smacking ban as would the social work profession as a whole,” she told Jewish News. The Scottish Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in support of a bill making it a criminal offence for parents to slap their children by 84 votes to 29.
London 020 8455 4996 Manchester 0161 507 5480
The bill, introduced by ex police officer Scottish Greens MSP John Finnie, will give children in Scotland the same legal protection from assault as adults. Before the law change, parents were allowed to use “reasonable chastisement” or “justifiable assault” to discipline their children. Critics of the law, which include the Scottish Conservative Party, say it is too strict and will do little to protect vulnerable children. Campaign group Be Reasonable Scotland said the ban carries risks “to family life, social work and the police” and could “end up doing far more harm than good.”
Ira’s financial nightmare began with a garage full of papers. The papers had been in Ira’s garage for nine years, ever since his mother died. Ira explains: “After Mum died, I had about three weeks to clear the house. I just said, ‘Shove all the papers in boxes and we’ll worry about it later.’ “I suppose I went into a depression after she died. I was very tired, and I couldn’t cope with it all on my own.

Sally, Ira’s Paperweight caseworker, describes the experience: “When we first met, Ira was so stressed by the whole thing. It’s been brilliant to see the change in him. Now we sit down together and each work through a pile of papers. And we’re working together on the back tax returns, and completing probate.” Ira is very grateful. He says: “Sally is amazing. HORAH DANCE IN PHOTO FINISH This image by Australia-based wedding photographer Stewart Leishman was a finalist in this year’s prestigious Sony Alpha Awards, which showcases some of the world’s best photography. The black and white image, taken last November, is called The Horah and shows the aftermath of the Israeli dance at a Jewish wedding. “It was pretty sweaty,” said Leishman, posting on Facebook. The overall winner of the competition, which features its winning photos at Somerset House in London, was a colour image of a lone iceberg drifting in the Antarctic Ocean.

CLAIMS ‘HASTENED’ BRITTAN’S DEATH The death of former home secretary Lord Brittan was hastened after MPs placed “undue pressure” by police, the Commons has heard. Conservative ex-minister Sir Hugo Swire made the remark, as he raised concerns over false claims of a VIP Westminster paedophile ring. A report by former High Court Judge Sir Richard Henriques said Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson put pressure on police investigating the false allegations.
ISLAM TV CHANNEL BROKE OFCOM RULES A programme on the Islam Channel that “characterised Jewish people as ‘tyrannical’ and having an ‘evil mind’” broke Ofcom’s broadcasting rules, the regulator said. “We are putting the Licensee on notice that we will consider these breaches for the imposition of a statutory sanction,” the watchdog said on Monday. The English-language channel broadcast in over 136 countries, including the UK, offers programmes from an Islamic perspective. “The broadcast had the potential to incite intolerance among viewers,” the regulator said.

KNOWING YOUR BRCA STATUS IS KEY BY ALISON DAGUL
CAMPAIGNER
It broke my heart finding out my daughter was a carrier. At the same time, my BRCA status ultimately allowed her to choose to save her own life. I am eternally grateful that, at only 26, she had a riskreducing double mastectomy and will take part in the Protector trial for the ovarian side. There is a 50/50 chance of inheriting it, and once you know your BRCA status, you can protect not only your own life, but also your daughter’s, sister’s, mother’s, aunt’s, niece’s, uncle’s, brother’s and nephew’s. BRCA cannot jump a generation and cancer does not discriminate or care. We can stop this devastating deathly inheritance by making sure it is not passed onto any future children through PGD, a form of IVF, which in simple terms means no embryos carrying the mutation will be used.
Both male and female carriers are entitled to this procedure under NHS guidelines. Mathew Knowles, the father of singer Beyoncé, who has been diagnosed with a BRCA2 breast cancer is encouraging BRCA testing: “Talk about it... Speak out. Sooner, faster, quicker about it. That’s what strength is. Weakness is when you want to keep it secret.” With BRCA being so prevalent within the community, we need to think of it as a blessing and not a curse. Had I known I was a carrier, I would’ve known what ovarian cancer symptoms to look out for. Remember BEAT: bloating, difficulty eating, abdominal pains and changes in toilet habits. We must use modern scientific knowledge to help change the destiny of the Jewish community. Too many women will die because they did not know they were carriers. Knowing your BRCA status gives you the opportunity and the choice to take necessary steps to protect yourself and your family.

Israel aims to sign ‘historic’ pacts with Arab neighbours Israel’s foreign minister this week confirmed he’s advancing nonaggression treaties with several Arab countries in the Gulf, in a “historic” move to end the conflict between Jerusalem and those states. “Recently I have been promoting, with the backing of the prime minister, a diplomatic initiative to sign non-aggression agreements with the Arab Gulf states,” Israel Katz wrote on Twitter. “It’s a historic move that will
end the conflict and enable civilian cooperation until the signing of peace agreements,” he said, in what appeared to be a tacit acknowledgement that no Arab country is currently willing to establish full diplomatic relations with the Jewish state as long as the IsraeliPalestinian conflict remains unresolved. Katz further confirmed that he presented his plan to several Arab foreign ministers during his visit
Benjamin Netanyahu with Foreign Minister Israel Katz
to New York last week at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. He also discussed the proposal with the US administration’s outgoing special envoy for the peace process, Jason Greenblatt, Katz said. “I will continue to work to strengthen Israel’s standing in the region and around the world,” he pledged. Katz’s tweet included a link to a report aired Saturday night by Channel 12, which first revealed the existence of the potentially groundbreaking initiative. The TV report, which did not quote a source, said the deal in the workings is designed to provide for friendly bilateral relations, cooperation in a variety of fields, and no war or incitement, as both Israel and the Gulf states face an increasingly belligerent Iran. On September 23, Katz tweeted that he had held talks with an unnamed counterpart from an Arab country with which Israel does not have formal relations, and said they discussed “ways to deal with the Iranian threat” and a process for boosting “civilian cooperation.”
1-in-3 Israeli Jews didn’t fast A new survey has revealed that one-inthree Jewish Israelis do not fast on Yom Kippur, while almost two fifths don’t attend synagogue. Some 60.5 percent abstain from eating and drinking, while 39 percent don’t go to shul at all on the Day of Awe. In a survey conducted by the Guttman Center for Public Opinion
and Policy Research of the Israel Democracy Institute, it was been revealed that 27.5 percent of Jewish Israelis don’t fast, while five percent consume liquids, and seven percent are undecided. The data from 501 respondents was collected ahead of this week’s Day of Atonement.
LIKUD LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership of Likud was called into question this week by a party rival. Gideon Saar did what no Israeli politician from the ruling conservative party has done in more than a decade in openly challenging the premier. The brazen move against the longserving Israeli leader has solidly positioned the 52-year-old Saar as the
Likud party’s leading candidate to replace Netanyahu. The premier is fighting for his survival amid a pending corruption indictment and post-election political paralysis. A former aide and senior Cabinet minister under Netanyahu, Saar has long been considered a rising star in Likud and a rare independent voice in the party.
New York antisemitism on the rise Hate crimes against Jews in New York City rose significantly over the first nine months of this year. New York police reported 311 total hate crimes through September, as opposed to 250 reported through the same period in 2018, according to
Deputy Inspector Mark Molinari, who heads the department’s Hate Crimes Task Force. Molinari said 52 percent of the reported hate crimes, or 163, have targeted Jews. Over the same period last year, the NYPD reported 108 antisemitic crimes.

5,000-year-old city unearthed The remains of a vast 5,000-yearold city have been discovered in Israel, shedding new light on experts’ understanding of the period. Israel’s Antiquities Authority said the early Bronze Age settlement – a “cosmopolitan and planned city” – covered 160 acres and was home to about 6,000 people. “In this city, we have a planned settlement with a whole net of streets and alleys and squares, and Figurines found during site excavations drainage installations, storage installation,” Yitzhak Paz, a director of excava- town some 50km (30 miles) north of Tel Aviv. Researchers said the discovery “dration on behalf of the authority, said. The city, called En Esur (Ein Asawir), matically changes” their understanding was discovered during preparations for of the period – a time in which a rural, a road interchange project near Harish, a agrarian society was beginning to establish
urban sites. They said residents made their living from agriculture and traded with other regions and kingdoms. Among the discoveries was an unusual ritual temple, burnt animal bones – evidence of sacrificial offerings – and a figurine of a human head. “The remains of residential buildings, diverse facilities and the public buildings are an indication of the organised society and the social hierarchy that existed at the time,” researchers said. The Antiquities Authority said archaeologists also found evidence of an earlier settlement dating back 7,000 years.
JEWISH BOY ‘FORCED’ TO KISS MUSLIM CHILD’S FEET Two reports of antisemitic bullying at schools in Australia received widespread media coverage last week. A photo that allegedly shows a 12-year-old Jewish student being forced to kneel to kiss the shoes of a Muslim classmate was circulated on social media. The incident occurred at the Cheltenham Secondary
College in a Melbourne suburb, according to the Melbourne-based The Age newspaper. The report did not make it clear if the Muslim boy’s religion had anything to do with the incident. At Hawthorn West Primary School in Melbourne, where Jewish student aged five was called a number
of antisemitic insults, including a “Jewish cockroach”, according to The Age. Dvir Abramovich, chairman of B’nai B’rith’s Anti-Defamation Commission, said the incidents are part of a broader trend of antisemitic bullying. Both Jewish boys have left their schools.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
Food for thought
This time of year is about ritual and routine. About family, challah, apple, honey, reflection, introspection and the clarion call of the shofar. But in such topsy-turvy times, with talk of US presidential impeachment, UK parliamentary prorogation and ominous rhetorical “othering”, more and more of us are seeing a different side to the High Holy Days – a more deeply reflective one. We’re not just thinking about the year that has passed and the year to follow. We’re more inclined to mend relationship fences and to consider what and how to change at a fundamental level, rather than deciding simply to do something new. There has never been a better time. The UK’s coming election looks set to be the most important in a generation, one fully capable of shredding the political landscape as we know it. Likewise, Israel also appears to be on the brink of a rare change in political leadership. It’s apt that in the coming days we celebrate Succot, recalling our ancestors trek through the wilderness many millennia ago. A journey into the unknown, at the mercy of the elements, sheltered only by temporary dwellings as they wandered through the desert in search of the Promised Land. This year the fragile succahs in which we will eat and sleep seem to symbolise not just the past but also the future. The months ahead are uncertain – a journey into the unknown, at the mercy of elements many fear we will be powerless to control. ‘Y’ are we still waiting? Rosh Hashanah had just gone out when I took my season ticket seat in Tottenham’s Stadium for the Champions League tie between Tottenham and German champions Bayern Munich. As soon as I sat down, just before kick-off, Spurs fans in the South Stand and around the ground began their trademark chant at ear-piercing volume: “Being a Yid, being a Yid, the thing I love most is being a Yid. We sang it in France and we sang it in Spain... They tried to stop us but look what it did, the thing I love most is being a Yid...” How hard did Tottenham try to prosecute fans for using the Y-word? I bet not one of those fans is Jewish; that’s why they use the Y-

word so overtly. Immediately after this chant came another: “Yids” with clapping. It makes me feel sick, possibly more so than others because I am the son of a Holocaust survivor. Do the players also find these chants offensive to Jews? What if fans shouted the P word [Pakistani]? Would the directors turn a blind eye? I find Spurs fans’ obsession with chanting the Y-word over and above any other football chants offensive and insulting. Editorial comment and letters
DELUDED AND DANGEROUS I was dismayed to see Jemma Wayne’s article comparing mandatory vaccination to Nazi Germany (Jewish News, 4 October 2019). Comparing anything to the Holocaust is unacceptable. She states the basis for any debate on the subject should begin with the basic fact that people have free choice over their bodies. The government requires all parents to do minimal health care for their kids. The vaccination process is part of that.
EDITOR’S REPLY: We received numerous comments like the one above complaining about Jemma Wayne’s “anti-vaccination” column in last week’s Jewish News. Jemma’s piece was not an anti-vaccination column. Indeed, its key point was less about the rights and wrongs
If she says mandating a lack of neglect is the first stages of the Holocaust, ending her piece with ‘first they came for the socialists’ and peppering it with statements absorbed from the anti-vaccination movement (which has shifted arguments from vaccine contents to the concept of choice, knowing their fearmongering has no science basis) she is offering potentially dangerous advice.

of vaccination than the limits of personal liberty, free choice and consent. My view is that refusing to vaccinate is neglectful, but Jemma’s column was the first I’ve read that made me think non-vaxxers shouldn’t be automatically charged with child abuse. As such it was brave, provocative, deeply controversial and, I felt, worthy of inclusion.

Spurs in denial over harm wrought by Yid identity ALEX BRUMMER
CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL
A
s part of a community that has been beset by violence from Pittsburgh to Paris and Los Angeles to Copenhagen, it is hard not to be fearful of the extremism that has infected the public dialogue. British Jews have come to accept the need for guards on school gates, surveillance cameras at places of worship and the need, particularly at this time of the year, to question strangers wanting to join us in prayer. But there is a profound ignorance of Judaism. Many people using antisemitic tropes don’t even realise they are doing so. In a recent casual afterwork conversation in a pub, my son, Gabriel, was questioned about which football team he supported, to which he replied Chelsea. The response from the other party was: “At least you’re not a Yid.” Which, of course, he is. My son could have challenged the use of the world Yid but let it go assuming the questioner
was referring to Spurs (where supporters insist on self-identifying themselves as Yids). He also wanting to avoid a machloket (dispute). In another recent incident at Stamford Bridge, a friend, who happens to be one of the leading lights in Kick it Out, the movement to halt racism at football grounds, watched in horror as a hooligan abused a father and son wearing kippot. “You are at the wrong ground,” the hooligan yelled. Another reference to Spurs. On this occasion, the abuser had launched his assault in sight of the wrong person. The witness reported it to the stewards, found the abuser’s seat number and made a statement to police.
❝
THE CLUB’S OWNER AND MANAGEMENT DESERVE CREDIT FOR TAKING ON THE DIFFICULT ISSUES
Both these incidents have the same source. Tottenham has the shiniest, most state of the art stadium in the Premier League, but its Jewish owner tycoon Joe Lewis and its top executive Daniel Levy, have never addressed fully the harm that comes from the Yid identity. It creates tension at every stadium Spurs play. Jews never mind parodying themselves, but when others do it it becomes deeply unattractive. The paradox of these incidents is that no club or owners have done more in recent times to take on racism generally and antisemitism head-on than Chelsea. Early this year, it launched a partnership with the World Jewish Congress as part of its ‘Say No to Antisemitism’ campaign. It posted a video to its social media platforms featuring the stars of its team holding ‘We Remember’ signs and advocating the importance of Holocaust memory in fighting racism. In April, Chelsea, in partnership with Jewish News, held a gala dinner at Stamford Bridge to raise funds for the Imperial War Museum’s new Holocaust Galleries in London. Hosted by comedian David Baddiel and entitled Light From The Dark, the dinner was attended by 350
guests, including Lord Coe, former chairman of the British Olympic Association, Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck and Shoah survivors. During the event, one of the rabbis even organised a minyan at Stamford Bridge allowing me to recite Kaddish. In spite of moving to Israel, owner Roman Abramovich last year donated £30.5 million to the rehabilitation of the IWM’s Holocaust memorial galleries. The club’s programmes openly campaign against racism. In the recent match against Liverpool, a full page advertisement declares ‘Support Chelsea, Support Equality’. It offers precise instructions on how supporters should report abusive behaviour. One fears much of this good and intensive work passes the average fan by. Incidents involving Chelsea supporters proliferate, but the club’s owner and management persist and deserve credit for taking on really difficult issues of racism and antisemitism. If the same activist approach were taken throughout the Premier League, then the stains of antisemitism and racism – which still infects the terraces – could be dialled down, if not eliminated.

ast week Jewish News published an opinion piece by Jemma Wayne regarding the perceived notion that whipped up fear is clouding the facts surrounding vaccinations. Having worked night shifts over the weekend and therefore not been privy to my usual Shabbat afternoon read, I was alerted to the article by a Whatsapp message on a group for Jewish doctors on Sunday afternoon. The rage encountered was something never previously experienced; a response was considered obligatory in the interest of public safety. As a first, I must commend the author for her truly persuasive writing style and beautiful prose. Sadly, this is where my admiration ends. The inflammatory language shook me to my very core and goes against the basic requirements of proper science reporting. Ms Wayne has clearly misunderstood or fails to understand what the data and the facts really tell us. To be clear, this is not an argument for or against whether vaccines should be compulsory. I have my opinions on the matter, as will the general public, and choices such as this are worthy of public debate. Conveniently positioning herself as fighting for the perceived weak, the few, the defenceless, is a classic ‘them vs us’ tactic that has no place in genuine debate. Yet even worse are the abhorrent references to the Holocaust, preying on the collective Jewish conscience. TWICE comparing vaccination programmes to the repugnant Nazi regime is a masterstroke in emotive language. For readers who would like a more balanced argument, please read on. The fact is, simple biochemistry dictates that no medicine in the world comes without risks and possible side effects. Every single particle you ingest, whether medicine or day-to-day food, acts in multiple ways that we only partially understand. Names available on request consequence of lower vaccination rates? Now lets analyse some of the author’s ‘facts’ about the measles vaccine. The vaccine was actually introduced in 1968, not 1963 as she wrote. (Incidentally, she happened to choose a year with a coincidental lower rate of deaths than the surrounding years). The 0.00007% death rate in the population from measles can also be written as 39 people. That’s 39 saveable lives. In the 10 years prior to measles vaccine introduction, an average 86 people died each year from measles. The 10 years from 2008-2017 produced an average of just 0.8, less than one person per year. And let’s note, that this is simply recording death rate, a rare complication of measles infection. Not accounted for are the thousands of people suffering life-changing complications including physical disabilities, behavioural or personality changes, serious chest infections, epilepsy… the list goes on. What she misunderstands, is that the entire raison d’etre of vaccinations is precisely to decrease the number of children and adults suffering from these conditions. The polio vaccine protects from crippling paralysis. The meningitis vaccine shields from complications such as brain damage. The diphtheria vaccine from airway obstruction and heart damage. The list is never ending. I invite the author to speak to parents of sufferers who had not vaccinated their children and subsequently contracted these diseases, and ask whether in hindsight they Restaurants also in would change their decision. Fortunately, today we live in a world Green Lanes, Palmers Green, 0208 882 2228 where many of these devastating diseases and High Street, Enfield, 0208 805 9838 have been forced into the shadows by vaccinations programmes introduced in the last 100 years. 2019 Jewish News 4 October

Feldman, who was the youngest to take on the challenge, was joined by 19 others, including the charity’s new chief executive Lisa Wimborne, raising more than £12,000.

‘Who knew MICK JAGGER would still be singing at 60?’ Francine Wolfisz speaks to Laurence Myers, the accountant-turned-music mogul who launched David Bowie’s career and told the Rolling Stones frontman to get a pension
D
uring his years as an accountant, Laurence Myers still remembers one young wannabe singer, skinny, with long hair and distinctively large lips, striding into his office to ask about pensions. “After all, Laurence, I’m not going to be singing rock ‘n’ roll when I’m 60,” he gestured. “No, you’re not,” agreed Myers, laughing at the almost preposterous thought. Looking back on that moment today, nearly six decades later, Myers finds himself chuckling in disbelief at the financial advice he gave to none other than Mick Jagger. “At 76, he’s still rocking and certainly doesn’t need a pension,” he exclaims. “But then, who knew? Hindsight is a wonderful thing.” Now a sprightly 83-year-old himself, Myers has certainly led a life filled with eye-popping anecdotes emanating right from the heart of the entertainment industry during the ‘60s and ‘70s, as detailed in his fascinating new memoir, Hunky Dory (Who Knew?), published this week. Known as the “go-to” accountant for the music industry and later as a music business executive and film and theatre producer in his own right, he went from looking after the Rolling Stones, to shepherding

acts like the Animals, Donovan, Jeff Beck, Lulu, Donna Summer and Billy Ocean. Apart from advising a young Jagger on saving his pennies for the future, the St John’s Wood resident recalls how he left Led Zeppelin’s cash in a safe – and lost the key – as well as the moment he ended up throwing Rod Stewart out of his office and turned down the chance to manage Queen and a “blind, Italian opera singer”. Thankfully, Andrea Bocelli still did just fine. His proudest memory is unequivocally the day he decided to risk all and give David Bowie a chance, when others in the music industry had already turned him away. Today he is a man with many interesting stories to share – so much so, that his family urged him to “go write a book” – but throughout his memoir, one gets the keen impression Myers himself couldn’t appreciate the enormity of working with some of the greatest names in this golden era of music, until many years late – hence the “who knew?” part of his title. While his working career became swaddled in Hollywood parties and a jet-set life spent between London, Los Angeles and New York, Myers came from humbler roots, growing up in East Ham and later Finsbury Park to a family of Russian and Polish-Jewish immigrants. “I’m very, very Jewish,” he tells me. “I was brought up in a Jewish family with yiddishkeit, Friday nights, going to shul and the Jewish way of life. It is who I am and has affected my whole life.” At age 16, he was presented with “the Jewish mother’s list” of becoming a doctor, architect, dentist or accountant and settled for the latter, but with an initial salary of just 15 shillings a week (75 pence in today’s money), Myers found himself having to supplement his income with hard graft running a sweet stall on Club Row Waste, an extension of Petticoat Lane in the East End. He recalls: “My parents weren’t wealthy by any means and found it hard to give me any more money, so I worked the markets. I think that was a far better education for business than being an accountant, because it taught me about having a good work ethic. There’s not much romance in schlepping to the markets at six in the morning. It also taught me about how to deal with people and give them what they want.” His ability to schmooze the customer later translated to handling some of the greatest household names
from the music industry. Among his proudest achievements was signing David Bowie at a time when other record labels had already rejected him – albeit at great personal financial risk. Myers tells me: “I wasn’t a big corporation. I had a home and a mortgage and had to put up my own money for David’s promo record. But when that got us a deal, his wife Angie told me she was very grateful for the chance I’d given him when no-one else would. I’m very proud of that.” Along the way, there were also the more difficult personalities for Myers to manage, with Adam Faith topping his list. “He judged everything with, ‘would Marlon Brando do it?’ I used to tell him, ‘well no, he wouldn’t do it, but you’re not bloody Marlon Brando’. I was working with him on my first production, Budgie The Musical, but if it had been my fifth, I would’ve fired him. He was all about the ego.” Myers also recalls, with some pain, how his foray into film production resulted into “one of the greatest disasters in the history of the Cannes Film Festival”, when a publicity party for the The Greek Tycoon starring Anthony Quinn and Jacqueline Bisset went completely awry – including his white suit being doused in red wine by the end of the night. Suffice to say, he concludes that he remained a “very, very small fish in the film pool – a tiddler”, but in the music business he remained “an important name.” His was a career paved with a few bumps along the way, but ultimately one that he can look back with fondness and few regrets. Even today, Myers, who has been married to Marsha for 57 years and has three children, is rarely spotted putting his feet up. Apart from his memoir, he’s just served as executive producer on the new Judy biopic starring Renee Zellweger and is working on a screenplay. “The only thing I regret is not having spent more time being creative,” he opines. “For many years, I was known as an accountant and people thought, well what do you know? It took a look time for me to start having the confidence to realise actually I did know.” Hunky Dory (Who Knew?) by Laurence Myers is published by B&B Books priced £20 (hardback). Available now.

Roman Griffin Davis, Taika Waititi and Scarlett Johannsen star in Jojo Rabbit
Jojo Rabbit at BFI London Film Festival JEWISH ACTOR AND DIRECTOR Taika Waititi says the rise of the far right has made his upcoming satire based in Nazi Germany feel more relevant than ever before. Jojo Rabbit revolves around a young boy who joins the Hitler Youth and later discovers his mother (played by Jewish actress Scarlett Johannsen) is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. As his world turns upside down, he is aided by his imaginary friend, a ludicrous version of Adolf Hitler, played by Waititi. The talented New Zealander – whose father is of Maori heritage – said this week at BFI London Film Festival: “When I wrote it, it was very rare that you would read about these things in the news – and now it almost
feels like every couple of days you are hearing about hate groups and acts of prejudice and intolerance. “Sadly that stuff is happening more and more often and I guess if there is one thing I can take away as a positive is that the film is more relevant than ever now, and hopefully people get to watch it and it will change them or encourage them to go and make a change in the world.” He added: “Satire has always been an important weapon, but comedy has always been a more important weapon in my mind. It’s more that you’re pulling at the thread of these regimes and these ideals and the things that, on the surface, are pretty absurd, so it’s good to poke fun at bullies and people who encourage prejudice.” Thomasin McKenzie, who plays Elsa – the Jewish girl being hidden in the attic, said: “There is a lot of hate around the world at the moment and a lot of angry people feeling as if they have the right to put people down for their religion or for where they are from and what they look like, which is not ok. I think this movie tries to fight against that.” Game Of Thrones star Alfie Allen and comedienne Rebel Wilson also star in the much-anticipated film.

SEDRA Haazinu BY RABBI JEFF BERGER The magnificent 44-verse poem comprising the bulk of parshat Haazinu was delivered on the last day of Moses’s life. Calling on the Heavens and Earth as witnesses, he described the tenuous relationship between God and the Israelites, both past and present, forewarning of disastrous consequences should they stray from their steadfast devotion to the Almighty. Reflecting upon Moses’ life, and especially his 40 years as leader of Bnei Yisrael, we could ask what was his legacy? From these final words in Haazinu and the last chapters of Deuteronomy, we see a different aspect to Moses. His focus was on the fragile, vulnerable state of this people. At the pinnacle of success, with the 10 commandments in his arms, Moses was chastised by God and told the people had defiled their relationship with the Almighty by creating a surrogate deity. In response, the Almighty’s wrath burned hot against Bnei Yisrael. Moses was told to stand aside so they might be destroyed. Only his unflinching intervention averted disaster; the nation was given a second chance and an everlasting formula for seeking God’s forgiveness. At the end of his life, Moses stood on the banks of the Jordan River. The Israelite nation had survived and were about to cross into Canaan, while Moses, their steadfast shepherd, was about to ascend Har HaAvarim to pass from life unto death. It was a poignant transition for both. The words of Haazinu may sound harsh at points, but they remind us good leaders remain focused on a vision until it has been achieved.

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about: Thomas Cook’s demise BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Travel giant Thomas Cook went bankrupt at short notice, leaving customers stranded and out of pocket. So, what does the Torah stay about this? Bankruptcy is not a concept relevant to either Jewish or Islamic law. Once debts have been incurred, they must be paid. Partnerships with unlimited liability are part of classical Jewish law. However, a company cannot have separate legal personality and thereby enable a debtor to walk away from debts. Nonetheless, if the law of the land entertains the legality of a company, then as Jews we are bound to respect those definitions of business. Loss is calculated in accordance with the five types of damage enumerated by our sages, based on the passage in Exodus
❝
that deals with this issue and details these as personal injury, suffering, compensation for lost income, health bills and embarrassment. Stress and personal discomfort would fall under the head of suffering, as would lost income at work, and any medication or other outlay for food and health not adequately compensated

by way of vouchers or other forms of payout distributed on the ground from Thomas Cook. The knock-on effect of the collapse of such a prominent airline and travel company collapsing means there are likely to be delays lasting a lot longer, not only for Thomas Cook travellers, but for users of other airlines, who must pick up the fall-out of stranded passengers at the expense of some of their own clients. Compensating losses negatively affects third parties, including the taxpayer, owing to the promise made by the government to underwrite repatriation costs. From a Jewish law perspective, so long as the debts incurred can be paid off by an insurance policy and no party is left uncompensated, the duty on the company to pay customers can be satisfied and discharged. ◆Rabbi Abel serves Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation and is padre to Merseyside Army Cadet Force

The Bible Says What? ‘Moses was not as selfless as we think’ BY RABBI JANET BURDEN One of the most poignant stories in the Torah is of Moses being told to go up to Mount Avarim to see the land given to the Israelites, but which he would not be allowed to enter. His response to the situation is telling. He makes one request of God: “Appoint a man over the congregation… so they should not be like sheep who have no shepherd.” Traditionally, this is interpreted as an illustration of Moses’ selflessness. Even in this moment of great personal sadness, he seems to think only of the people. The problem with that reading is that it simply doesn’t have the ring of emotional truth we so often find in Biblical narrative. We have seen throughout the Exodus story that Moses is nothing if not supremely human, and subject to all our human foibles and frustrations. He tries to duck responsibility, makes mistakes, and he certainly gets angry. In fact, his anger led him to commit the sin at Meribah for which he is
forbidden to enter the land. It does not seem plausible that Moses’ reaction here is utterly selfless. He is, of course, concerned about the people, but he is also reacting to the loss of his role as leader of the people. I can imagine that behind these words is also a hope that perhaps God will realise there isn’t another suitable leader. Perhaps God will relent and let Moses enter after all? The reader knows this cannot be, but we sympathise with Moses. Letting go of a role (and with it a way of being in the world) is so hard. That is why the scene later on in which Moses symbolically transfers his authority by placing his hands upon Joshua is so powerful. May we always have the courage to assume leadership where it is wanting, and to relinquish it when the time comes. That is the mark of a true mensch.

Progressively Speaking We should be courteous to each other, even if MPs aren’t BY RABBI SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD Jewish tradition is no stranger to robust debate. Talmud reveals “the scholars of the land of Israel treat each other graciously when engaged in debate, but the scholars of Babylon injure each other”, and more controversy is recorded in the Babylonian than the Jerusalem Talmud. Another story tells of a three-year dispute between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel, ended only when a Divine voice emerged, proclaiming: “These and These (Elu’v’Elu) are the words of the living God. But the halacha is with Beit Hillel.” The Talmud asks: “If both are valid, why is the halacha with Hillel?” And answers: “Because they were agreeable, showed restraint when insulted, and taught both sides of the issue.” Our tradition is replete with injunctions towards civility in discourse. Avot tells that arguments for the sake of heaven (for general benefit) – like those between Hillel and Shammai – will endure. But
selfish arguments – such as Korach’s – will not. The process also matters even more than the content – Shabbat 17a tells of a day when Beit Shammai, realising they had a majority, prevented anyone from leaving or entering and passed 18 laws without listening to any minority opinion. This day is described as a tragedy as great as the golden calf, the violent overturning of respectful discourse. We are repeatedly reminded about courteous dialogue, about listening to the other, being open to their opinions. Tradition teaches that sinat chinam, baseless hatred, led to the destruction of the Temple.
Within the Jewish world, different Batei Din must respect each other’s judgments, and different streams of Judaism should respect each other’s integrity. Within the wider world, we have been watching the breakdown of civil discourse in the past three years, as people label the other side as “stupid”, “conspiratorial” or “evil”. There is a deliberate attempt to create divisions in society, fracture communities and families, set people against each other, and at the root of it is the failure to adhere to the rules of civil discourse. We Jews know words matter. The world is created with speech, and can be destroyed with it. Words enter the mind, changing thought, engendering love or hatred, creating suspicion. Life and death are in the power of the tongue – we cannot be silent. ◆Sylvia Rothschild has been a community rabbi in south London for 30 years

Often you don’t realise until the day the hospital suddenly informs you that the patient is medically fit for discharge ‘today’, that your mother might not yet be feeling strong enough to cope with going home and living alone again. Or it may be that your mother insists in remaining independent at home after discharge, but you can see she’s not back to her baseline of strength and ability and may even have weaker balance. This may leave her at high risk and unable to cope once home initially. Families may also not

You need to prepare for how your mother can really gain the best outcome and reach her full potential, having gone from 24-hour care in hospital to very little hour-by-hour support once home. seen lots of students with different levels of hypermobility, from our dance gymnastics classes to ballet lessons, and we often see great improvements in these students over time. I would say the discipline of a good ballet class is a great place to start. People who live with hypermobility often experience problems with their posture, as they tend to lean in to their hypermobile joints. Ballet can help any individual with the development of good posture, as certain muscles are trained to be engaged at all times. All dance classes provide a particular focus on stretching, not only to warm up, but to improve flexibility. Hypermobile people,
although very flexible in some areas, will experience restriction in certain muscle groups. It is therefore important for all hypermobile dancers to spend time stretching the areas that experience tightness, while not overstretching muscles that are overly mobile. Ballet instils in all dancers perseverance, stamina and strength, which helps improve core strength and balance in their day to day life. At five years old, it is also a great age to start and work your way up through the grades. If you live local to north London, we’d love to welcome you at one of our classes. And, of course, if you have any questions, do feel free to message me directly.
