Ellman: ‘My anguish over antisemitism’ Dame Louise Ellman has told Jewish News that quitting Labour over antisemitism – after more than half a century in the party – has left her “in a traumatic situation”, writes Mathilde Frot. “I feel I’ve taken the right decision but still feel agonised about it,” she revealed in an interview yesterday, hours after finally jumping ship. The Liverpool Riverside MP, 73, (pictured) cited growing speculation a general election is imminent as a triggering factor and said she “knew in her heart” she could not “ask people to vote Labour while Jeremy Corbyn was leader.” “I don’t know what’s in his heart but I do know he has presided over the unprecedented growth of antisemitism within the Labour Party and I hold him responsible,” she said. When asked whether there were any moments when she was close to quitting Labour in the last four years, she said: “Up until now I’ve taken the view that it’s better to stay in the party and fight and expose what’s wrong.” She has received backing from MPs and party members. “There have been

some hostility as well… but I feel very pleased to have had the support I’ve received,” she added. But, notably, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has not reached out, she added. “I think he realises I am resolute in what I decided and he’s never given any indication that he’s willing to change his position,” she added. Unlike her former Labour colleague Luciana Berger, Dame Louise pledged not to defect to another party and said “no one has been in touch.” But she has not “given any thought” on whether to contest the Liverpool Riverside seat as an independent in a general election. “This is a completely new situation for me. I still feel the Labour Party is my political home but I can’t support it with its current leader and this is entirely new territory,” she said. On the likelihood of Corbyn becoming PM, she said: “Anything is possible. We’re in an unprecedented situation where the established political order is breaking down and nobody could assume with any confidence what the outcome might be.” Continued on page 2

Ellman: Why I had to quit Continued from page 1 Dame Louise, who says she will remain a member of Labour Friends of Israel, also revealed she submitted evidence to the EHRC investigation into allegations of institutional antisemitism in the party, for which a verdict is expected as early as January. “I don’t know what the response will be but I know the EHRC has received over-

whelming evidence of the Labour Party’s failure to deal with antisemitism properly,” she said. The MP referred the EHRC to a case involving the activist Kayla Bibby, who allegedly shared an image depicting the Statue of Liberty being smothered by a facehugger from the sci-fi movie Alien, with a Star of David on its back. But Dame Louise remains hopeful and said she would wish to rejoin the party under a new leader, describing the party she has been a member of for 55 years as her “natural political home”. Praising Margaret Hodge and Ruth Smeeth for being “at the forefront of the fight,” she paid tribute to the “overwhelming majority of Labour MPs here who have pursued Jeremy Corbyn on

antisemitism and put forward very strong pressure on the Labour Party to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism.” In a statement, a Labour spokesperson said: “Jeremy Corbyn thanks Louise Ellman for her service to the Labour party over many years. “Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party are fully committed to the support, defence and celebration of the Jewish community and continue to take robust action to root out antisemitism in the party and wider society. “Jeremy Corbyn has consistently supported struggles for human rights and justice around the world and made the right calls in the interests of security and peace.”  Editorial comment, page 12

HATE CRIMES DOUBLE IN A YEAR Hate crimes against Jews more than doubled, with the community targeted in 18 percent of religious hate crimes. Police recorded 1,326 offences in 2018/2019, compared with 672 the previous year. Police in England and Wales recorded 103,379 hate crimes overall in 2018/2019. This is 10 percent higher than the previous year, and the

Hate crimes targeting Jewish people recorded by police more than doubled in a year across England and Wales, official figures show. Data published on Tuesday found that nearly half of religious hate crimes (47 percent) were against Muslim people, with 3,530 offences in 2018/2019, compared with 2,965 the previous year.

number has more than doubled since the 2012/13 figure. Over half of hate crimes were public order offences, while a third (36 percent) involved violence and another 5 percent were criminal damage or arson. The figures also found a large increase in offences against people based on sexual orientation.

EHRC probe ‘may bankrupt Labour’ Sources inside Labour’s ruling executive raised fears the Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) probe into alleged antisemitism could “bankrupt the party”, a report claimed. Members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) suggested the party could be exposed to lawsuits amid growing speculation about the outcome of the investigation, The Independent reported on Sunday. The issue is understood to have been raised at a meeting of the NEC, but the discussion was reportedly “shut down” by party officials and allies of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, sources told the newspaper. According to the report, members of the NEC fear they may be held personally financially responsible if the party is bankrupted by extensive damages. One NEC member told the newspaper: “If it’s really bad, then it opens up all sorts of

possibilities and it has been raised that the whole thing could basically bankrupt the party. “People are really worried. The party has been asked to let us know what indemnity it has because there are concerns that NEC members are going to ultimately be responsible for this.” But a Labour source denied concerns, saying: “It’s a regulatory investigation, which does not involve lawsuits against the party or any individual.” Labour is currently under investigation by the EHRC, which is expected to deliver its verdict as early as January – making it the second party to be probed by the watchdog after the British National Party. The probe, launched in August, seeks to determine whether the party, its employees or its “agents” unlawfully discriminated against, harassed or victimised Jews.

Poll: Berger looks golden Enabling independent living

JLIVING OFFERS A HOME, INDEPENDENCE AND PEACE OF MIND

Luciana Berger is poised to win Finchley and Golders Green for the Liberal Democrats, according to a new poll that suggests she will beat the incumbent Conservative candidate with 41 percent of the vote. The poll, conducted by Survation, claims the Liverpool Wavertree MP (pictured), standing in the north London seat after joining the Liberal Democrats in September, has a 12 point lead over Mike Freer. This number, if accurate, represents a staggering 34 point increase for the Lib Dems since the 2017 election.

The Lib-Dem commissioned survey shows Labour in third place, with 25 percent of the share. This comes after the party came within 2,000 votes of unseating Freer at the last election. Berger walked out of the Labour Party earlier this year over its response to antisemitism and was one of the founding members of Change UK, but has since joined the Lib Dems, citing its “unequivocal” stance against Brexit. The poll, which was conducted on 2 October, is the first to be done since Berger announced her bid to fight for Finchley and Golders Green as the Lib Dems’ candidate.

Suspended Labour MP Chris Williamson clashed with a Jewish student at the University of Nottingham who accused him of being an “antisemite”, a recording reveals. The Derby North MP, who gave a talk on British party politics last Friday despite student protests, delivered a fiery rant after being questioned by student Josh Lee. In the audio recording obtained by Jewish News, Lee can be heard asking him whether he is the “most unlucky anti-racism campaigner or are you just an outright liar?” Williamson said: “I will take no lectures from people who attack my credentials as an anti-racism campaigner. “In the 1970s as an apprentice brick-layer on building sites, I risked my personal safety... to challenge racists. I have the scars to prove it, so don’t accuse me of being an antisemite or a racist. It’s an absolute slur.”

TEENAGER ‘ABUSED’ ON BUS

A Jewish girl was reportedly subject to verbal and attempted physical abuse on a bus in Stamford Hill. British Transport Police is investigating after a man is claimed to have shouted “You Jews, you have it all good” at a 17-year-old on the 253 bus, before trying and failing to hit her. According to Shomrim, the incident happened as the bus came to Lea Bridge roundabout near Stamford Hill. Police said it was reported on 12 October but may have happened 10 days earlier. Campaign Against Antisemitism said the perpetrator was a “skinny and tall male in his twenties with short hair, wearing sunglasses and a hooded green sweatshirt.” They added that he continued to insult Jewish people and nobody intervened.

Climate change protests / News

Rabbi ‘will continue’ his rebellion An elderly rabbi arrested at an Extinction Rebellion protest in London this week and held in custody for six hours has pledged to continue taking firm action on climate change, writes Mathilde Frot. Before being taken by police, Rabbi Jeffrey Newman, 77, knelt down and prayed in the middle of the road outside Mansion House in the City of London, where he was gathered with dozens of Jewish protesters campaigning for governmental action against climate change. In the video, Newman can be seen refusing to stand up, and telling a policeman: “I would like to say that you’re not speaking the truth.” The Emeritus Rabbi of Finchley Reform Synagogue was released from Brixton Police Station pending an investigation on Monday evening, after being held in custody for “around six hours”. “I am very lucky. I am elderly, I have come to the end of my working life […] I can afford to be arrested,” he told Jewish News. Newman said he spent his time in custody writing in a notebook and took his Siddur into his cell. The long-time environmental campaigner claimed he had been “very lucky” and that “everyone was well treated” in the police station. “There isn’t anything that positive about being in a police cell, but it gave me time to think about what it would be like in prison,” he said. “You had a drink whenever you wanted,

Above and inset: Rabbi Jeffrey Newman being carried away by police

a hot drink. You had adequate food and it was fine,” he added. Newman will continue to campaign for action on climate change. “I’ve got grandchildren […] and the thought of the world they are likely to be growing up is absolutely abominable,” he explained. “It’s terrifying. The speed of change of the climate is frightening.”

The community should “get involved” and join Extinction Rebellion, even if they don’t wish to take to the streets, he said. “There are doctors, lawyers, financiers, psychotherapists. It’s about what everyone can do to help make this a society that is less competitive and more

cooperative,” he added. On Monday night, after his release, the Metropolitan Police issued a city-wide ban across the capital, but the anti-climate change group continued action, disrupting the London Underground yesterday morning. Videos shared on social media showed commuters clashing with protesters, and an activist was dragged to the ground after climbing on top of a train in East London. London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned Thursday’s protest, calling it “an unfair burden on our already overstretched police officers”. He added: “I urge demonstrators to protest peacefully and within the boundaries of the law.” The High Court is reported to have accepted Extinction Rebellion’s bid for a judicial review, and an initial hearing was expected to take place yesterday. Demonstrations have targeted London City Airport, areas around Parliament, the Bank of England, Google’s HQ, and more than 1,700 people have been arrested since the action began on 7 October.

Special Report / Yom Kippur synagogue attack

The red-rimmed eyes of the congregants trickling into Halle synagogue last Friday night said much to a reporter who speaks no Russian and only rudimentary German, writes Yaakov Schwartz. In their 50s and 60s, most of the synagogue’s 20 or so regulars came to Germany from the former Soviet Union decades ago. Their rabbi, Elisha Portnoy, is a young, Russian-speaking man who splits his time between Halle and another small community in a town nearby. Portnoy was not in the synagogue when 27-year-old neo-Nazi gunman Stephan Balliet tried to break through the building’s security door last Wednesday, as 70 or 80 worshippers packed the sanctuary for Yom Kippur prayers. The door to the house of prayer is riddled with bullet holes from the shooter’s failed attempts to break through it and into the synagogue. With no police present on the Jewish holy day, the door’s endurance was what prevented a larger-scale tragedy. The gunman managed to kill two people on the street, rocking the intimate city of roughly 240,000 located around 105 miles south-west of Berlin, and shaking this small congregation – the only one serving a Jewish community of several hundred – to its core. As Jewish supporters from Germany and around the world packed into the cramped sanctuary – designed to hold 100 at most – locals began to gather outside the synagogue’s walls.

Some held candles, others placed flowers at a makeshift memorial. By the time Portnoy sent out his friend and mentor Rabbi Adam Scheier, of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim in Montreal, to address the crowd, it had swelled into the thousands. “This is our answer. This is for the Jewish community, and all the world, who are looking to Halle to see what it means to respond to terror.

And I wish everyone, the entire world, a Shabbat of peace, a Shabbat of healing, and a Shabbat of blessing,” Scheier told the crowd after reciting the Kiddush prayer. Inside, Portnoy led the congregation in singing pre-Shabbat hymns. Earlier last Friday, thousands of people gathered in the central Marktplatz, blocking light rail service in the area. They flew Israeli flags, as well as anti-fascist ones, and carried banners with slo-

gans condemning antisemitism. One 19-year-old student at nearby Martin Luther University wore a green shirt emblazoned with the golden emblem of the Israel Defense Forces. He got the shirt weeks ago, he said, in order to provoke conversation. He said the effort has been highly successful. “Antisemitism is a growing problem that nobody wants to talk about,” he said, asking

not to be named. “But it needs to be addressed, and now. Wearing this shirt has been a really effective way of getting people to talk about it.” Asked to comment on the strong turnout at the event, he said: “It would be terrible if it were any other way”. With Halle’s mayoral elections last Sunday, there had been a political debate planned, but the three participating parties cancelled it to make way for the rally, which focused on combating right-wing fascism and antisemitism. Two other parties also suspended their campaigns in the wake of the shootings. The Yom Kippur far-right terror attack has struck a chord in the relatively progressive city, spurring a large-scale demonstration of soli-

darity last Friday that included the gathering of people in sympathy in the city centre, outside the synagogue, and in front of the kebab shop in which a 20-year-old painter was shot dead. Not far from the city centre protest, a lone farright activist stood on top of a minivan ranting about government-sponsored left-wing terror to a thin crowd of bemused spectators. The police presence required to protect him rivalled that of the large, entirely peaceful gathering nearby. “It’s funny,” said a 25-year-old teacher who asked not to be named. “I feel more Jewish now than ever before.” She and her older brother said they rarely come to synagogue, but participate in events geared toward Jewish young adults. Neither

was at the synagogue during the attack but they saw a silver lining in the reaction of their German counterparts. “Maybe it’s because the people killed were regular Germans and not Jewish,” said the teacher, “but this has really brought people together. I feel like now there’s no real difference between Jewish and non-Jewish people here, because everyone feels like this terror affects them personally.” However, experience behind the Iron Curtain colours the opinion of synagogue regulars. “We’re standing between two flames,” said the synagogue’s warden, 59-year-old Josef Levin, who came to Germany from Ukraine in 2004. “On the one side we have the neo-fascists, and on the other, we have immigrants coming from Syria and other places in the Middle East, who hate us just as much. And we’re stuck in the middle, burning.” Worshippers were back in their usual spots on Shabbat morning. Scheier told The Times of Israel he was confident in the future of German Jewry, adding that this attack was a symptom of a global trend rather than a local one, and that the community was in no greater danger than others worldwide.

THOUSANDS RALLY AGAINST ANTISEMITISM IN BERLIN Thousands of people in Berlin protested against antisemitism on Sunday, four days after the neo-Nazi attack on a synagogue in tHalle. About 10,000 people partici-

pated in the march through the German capital, while several thousand others protested the day before in other cities, including Hamburg and Marburg. Marchers at the rally – organ-

ised by civil rights group Unteilbar (Indivisible), under the slogan “We stand united” – carried Israeli flags and banners with slogans such as “No Nazis” or “Far-right terror threatens our society”. The

rally ended at the New Synagogue. Friedhelm Schmitt, a 52-yearold neurologist, said he had joined the protest “because I had to. It’s my democratic duty. It’s like going to vote.”

Music lover and football fan mourned Jana Lange was a dedicated fan of German pop music. Kevin S. was a construction worker and decorator who loved football. They have been identified as the two victims killed in the shooting by the gunman who tried to enter the Halle synagogue in Germany on Yom Kippur. Lange was 40; Kevin was 20. An unidentified 40-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man were injured in Wednesday’s attack, according to Der Spiegel. While 51 worshippers prayed inside on the most solemn day of the Jewish year, the gunman tried unsuccessfully to shoot through the synagogue’s door. Before she was shot, Lange reprimanded the shooter for being noisy near the synagogue during Yom Kippur prayer services. According to The Times of Israel, “Lange was unable to work due to a medical condition, and devoted most of her time to attending shows and collecting autographs. Friends and German musical artists on social media mourned Lange, recalling her warmth, humour and dedication to the German pop music scene.” After killing Lange, the shooter went on to a kebab shop, where he killed Kevin S., who was described as “a dedicated worker and avid football fan”. During a livestream on the platform Twitch, the shooter – identified as Stephan Balliet, 27 – who had a camera mounted on his helmet during the attack, said in English: “The root of all problems are the Jews,” and began his attack. In federal court last Thursday, he claimed antisemitic and right-wing motives for the attack.

TEACHER AXED FOR GAS GAG A supply teacher has been fired after allegedly “joking” she would “ship” students “off to the gas chambers” unless they completed their homework. The Daily Mail says the teacher, at Newberries Primary School in Radlett, made the remark last Thursday to a class of 10-year-olds – nearly half of whom were Jewish. Parents are understood to have accused her of telling children:

“You better finish off your work quick, or I’ll ship you all off to the gas chambers.” She is said to have apologised when challenged by a pupil, insisting she had been “joking”, and asked the class not to tell anyone. The school confirmed a supply teacher was dismissed over an “alleged racist comment” and said it acted immediately and was investigating.

‘Horrific’ desecration Dozens of war graves in a British cemetery in Haifa have been desecrated, with several swastikas sprayed in red paint on the site. Police are investigating after a cemetery worker doing his morning rounds discovered dozens of headstones desecrated at Haifa War Cemetery.

More than 340 casualties from the First and Second World Wars were laid to rest in the cemetery in the port city of Haifa, including the identified graves of 220 British soldiers. Neil Wigan, the UK Ambassador to Israel, said he was “horrified” by the news, tweeting last Friday: “I

hope police find those responsible.” Staff from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission repaired the headstones and removed graffiti last Friday morning. The Commission said it “will never allow such shameful acts to detract from our commemoration of the war dead.”

Tesco has begun investing an undisclosed amount in Tel Aviv start-up Trigo. The firm, founded in 2018 by brothers Daniel and Michael Gabay promises to “transform the retail experience” and deliver “frictionless shopping”.

Using artificial intelligence and a network of cameras, the firm creates a 3D image of the

shop floor and maps the movement of every item as consumers move through the aisles. Once customers leave the shop, an app on their phone lets them pay for their groceries by charging the card saved on their account.

TEEN ‘NEO-NAZI’ ON TRIAL A teenage neo-Nazi who listed venues, including synagogues, in his home city “worth attacking” wrote of hoping to follow in the footsteps of Adolf Hitler, a jury has heard. Manchester Crown Court was told that the boy, 16, from Durham, began drafting a manifesto that inluded a list of

targets such as schools, post offices, pubs, council buildings, a passport office and a bus station, The youngster, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, also allegedly wrote of planning to conduct an arson spree with Molotov cocktails on synagogues in the Durham area. The youth denies the charges.

News / Aid honour / Wembley succah

Inspirational Anita honoured by PM A Jewish aid worker has been honoured by the prime minister for setting up a Ghana-based charity tackling poor education and unemployment, writes Jack Mendel. Anita Lowenstein Dent, 53, was recognised on Monday by Boris Johnson, receiving

the prestigious ‘Points of Light award’. The Westminster Synagogue member founded the charity Teach2Teach International in 2017, with the aim of supporting young Ghanaians in deprived communities to become volunteer teachers. Supported by UK aid through the Department for International Development’s (DFID) Small Charities Challenge Fund, it hopes to train at least 30 aspiring educators by July 2020. Points of Light Awards recognises outstanding individual volunteers across the UK. She said: “I really don’t see this as an honour for

myself. I see it as an honour for the people I work with.” If this could have been an award for an organisation rather than an individual it would sit very much more comfortably on my shoulders. I am of course very proud to accept this on behalf of Teach2Teach International.” Having visited Ghana three times in the past year, Lowenstein Gent divides her time between the role, and a number of Jewish charities, including PJ Library UK and New Israel Fund UK. “I’m a Jewish woman working with a mixed religion organisation, and at the moment we work with an organisation in Ghana, which is principally Muslim, and we all work together in any community that has a need,” she explained. Boris Johnson said: “I know you do this with no thought of praise or reward, but allow me to offer

my own recognition of how Teach2Teach International is training the teachers of the future, giving young people across Ghana the education they need to succeed in their own lives.”

Wembley Stadium’s succah

Football is a religion to some, so it was fitting that one of the Judaism’s most beautiful traditions arrived this week at the home of the beautiful game. Builders descended on Wembley Stadium on Wednesday to create a pitch-side succah following an initiative by the Football Association and Rabbi Alex Goldberg, who chairs its faith network. An assortment of rabbis and leaders from organisations including Com-

munity Security Trust, Mitzvah Day, Holocaust Educational Trust and New Israel Fund were invited to celebrate the festival during two sessions in the temporary structure. They discussed their work in social action and other arenas and explored how they might be able to work more with the FA. Goldberg said: “I’m grateful the FA celebrated Succot at the home of football.”

Simon and Salim Matari, who are brothers, were recently called to the home of Rosa Meir to fix a major leak, according to Israel’s Channel 12. “When we got there, we saw there was a large blast of water and we started fixing it,” said Simon. “At some stage, while working, my brother Salim started to talk to Rosa about her life. “She told us she’s 95, a Holocaust survivor, and that she has a daughter. Her

life story touched my heart. I decided I won’t take a cent.” After the work was completed, he removed his notepad to bill her, and wrote: “Holocaust survivor, may you have health until 120 [years old], from Matari Simon and Matari Salim,” adding the cost of the service was “0 shekels”. Rosa was moved to tears, the report said. “The brothers really surprised me,” she said. “It was so moving and uplifting. I thanked them a lot.” Simon told her should she need anything else, they would happily fix it for free. Plumbers Simon and Salim Matari with Rosa Meir

Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned Turkey’s invasion of Kurdish areas of north-eastern Syria and offered humanitarian aid to the Syrian Kurds. Turkey launched its assault, leaving thousands of Kurdish civilians fleeing their homes. “Israel strongly condemns the Turkish invasion of the Kurdish areas in Syria and warns against the ethnic cleansing of the Kurds by Turkey and its proxies,” Netanyahu said in a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office. “Israel is prepared to extend humanitarian assistance to the gallant Kurdish people.”

A 73-year-old activist known in Germany as “graffiti grandma” has been fined after painting over Nazi graffiti in the town of Eisenach. Irmela Mensah-Schramm has spent three decades scraping away or painting over antisemitic and far-right slogans and symbols across Germany. The retired teacher was fined €300 (£260) after painting in 2018 several hearts over graffiti that read “NS-Zone”, an apparent reference to National Socialism, after a resident shared footage of the incident with police. Mensah-Schramm plans to appeal the ruling.

NEWS IN BRIEF

PITTSBURGH KILLER PLEA DEAL REJECTED Prosecutors have rejected an offer from a man accused of killing 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue who was willing to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence. Robert Bowers, 47, is accused of using an AR-15 rifle and other weapons to target worshippers inside the Tree of Life synagogue last October. His request was denied as prosecutors seek the death penalty for what was the deadliest attack on Jews in US history.

TEEN ‘SENT FRANTIC TEXTS AFTER RAPE’ A British teenager secretly sent frantic text messages to her mother, begging for help, as she was forced to make a false confession that she lied about a gang rape, a court has heard. The 19-year-old gave evidence on Tuesday in Cyprus, where she is on trial accused of causing public mischief by lying about being attacked in a hotel room in Ayia |Napa on 17 July. She told the judge she was raped, but claims to have been “forced” to retract her statement 10 days later after being interrogated for hours without a lawyer.

Ahoy there! Project connects Jews to sea A Florida-based project aimed at reconnecting Jews people to the sea and encouraging them to keep it clean is attracting attention from communities around America and Israel. On Rosh Hashanah, in a ceremony known as tashlich, Jews throw bread in running water as a symbol of cleansing themselves of their sins. The ‘Reverse Tashlich’ project calls on communities to change the process and remove the human “sins” from the water in waterfront cleanups. The project is part of the Tikkun HaYam (“repairing the sea”) initiative launched last year. It was founded by Rabbi Ed Rosenthal, also the founder of Scubi Jew, a Hillel club that teaches marine conservation with a Jewish twist. Rosenthal said: “The scheme applies a modern context to an ancient practice. In addition, it is intended to raise aware-

ness about one of the greatest existential threats to our planet, the ongoing destruction of the ocean.” Every year, millions of tons of manmade debris pollute global waters. ‘Reverse Tashlich’ started as a small programme at the Suncoast Hillel in Tampa Bay, Florida. The programme then expanded under the leadership of Shayna Cohen, director of Tikkun HaYam, and last year’s first annual event included nine locations and 307 participants. Some 650 pounds of rubbish were collected from Miami, Tampa Bay, and Washington, D.C. This year, on 6 October, groups in Boston, Minnesota, California, New York, and Israel took part. Rosenthal added: “Water is the source of life. If the ocean dies, we die. I can’t think of a more tikkun olam [healing the world] effort than that.”

CELEBRATED NOVELIST INSPIRED BY HERO JEWS Emma Donoghue, who wrote the awardwinning novel Room, has revisited an extraordinary story of Holocaust heroism for her new book, Akin. Donoghue was inspired by the work of two Jews, Odette Rosenstock and the man whom she later married, Moussa Abadi, who between them saved more than 500 Jewish children from certain death. Rosenstock was the Paris-born daughter of garment-factory owners, who qualified as a doctor during the Spanish Civil War, supporting the Republican cause. Abadi was a Syrian Jew, born, says Donoghue, in slum conditions in the Jewish ghetto of Damascus. “Educated by Catholic priests at a day school in the city, he came to Paris in 1933 to do a PhD on French medieval theatre,” she explained. “He was also a serious actor, touring New York with a French troupe

for five months. He and Rosenstock met through student friends in 1939 and fell in love at once.” Abadi had fled Paris for Nice at the outbreak of the war and in 1942 asked Rosenstock to join him in a resistance network he had set up rescuing Jewish children from all over southern France. This was the Marcel Network, which successfully hid children in sanctuaries all over the coast, with major help from local Christian clergy. Donoghue’s protagonist in the novel is a 79-year-old New Yorker who is trying to find out what his mother did during the “années noires” of the Second World War. The couple married after the war and resumed their careers, she as a specialist in TB and venereal disease, and he as a celebrated theatre critic and radio host. Moussa died in 1997 and, in 1999, aged 85, Abadi committed suicide.

Surprises in ‘Jewish’ Siberia A Swedish writer, Annika HernrothRothstein, got a surprise when she travelled to Irkutsk, Siberia, for last year’s High Holy Days. For she found not only a thriving Jewish community – there are said to be 5,000 Jews in Irkutsk alone — but a well-attended synagogue with no external security, such as is now commonplace all over Europe. And talking to the Chabad husbandand-wife team in Irkutsk, Aharon and Dorit Wagner, there were even more surprises. The couple reported that 19 adult males who had discovered their Jewish roots in the past year had asked to be circumcised. In Siberia, temperatures plummet in

the winter. But even Hernroth-Rothstein, accustomed to Stockholm weather, was surprised to hear Dorit speak about what it is like in Irkutsk on Shabbat in the winter. She said: “On a winter Shabbat last year, it was minus 45 degrees, and I assumed the services would have to be cancelled because no human would brave that cold and go outside. I was wrong. “The synagogue was packed, because no one wanted to be the person to cause the services to be cancelled, everyone wanted to do their bit. That is what this community is all about.” The 140-year-old synagogue burned down on Tisha B’av in 2004, and was reopened in 2009. During the five-year

restoration process, many old treasures were found in the rubble: pillars from the original structure that had been taken down and buried in concrete during the Communist era, along with tefillin and prayer books from the early 20th century. The artefacts revealed not only hidden treasures but many of the struggles endured by Russian Jews – struggles that brought them to the far ends of the empire. The building is now home to a synagogue, a nursery, library, youth hall, a large kitchen, and a cafeteria. MUSEUMS UNITE FOR EXHIBITION ‘UNION OF YOUTH’ The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Centre, the Encyclopedia of Russian Avant-Garde and the State Russian Museum are staging a groundbreaking exhibition due to open in Moscow on Thursday, after a successful run in St Petersburg. The show, Union of Youth, celebrates the work of key avantgarde artists of the 20th century, many of them Jewish. The Union of Youth was a revolution in Russian art and included painting styles such as Symbolism and Cubo-Futurism. The works will include both known and unknown artists — and are on loan from 15 museums from Russia and abroad, and three private collections. The show is being staged at Moscow’s Jewish Museum.

Ellman’s legacy Search for the term ‘public servant’ in the dictionary and the name Louise Ellman ought to appear at the very top of the page. An MP in Liverpool for more than two decades, ex- chair of a Commons select committee, former leader of Lancashire Council, its little wonder her announcement to step away from Labour after 55 years has sparked an outpouring of affection and admiration. But if her record is something to marvel at, the fact she has done all this while being that rare beast in Westminster – someone no one has a bad word to say about – is perhaps just as noteworthy. No one, that is, apart from those on and offline who blighted her final few years in the party. It’s no surprise she continues to agonise over the decision to step away from her political home, but the reaction underlines why so many Jews have had little choice but to conclude enough is enough.

Let’s wave a luvav in admiration of Josh Lee JENNI FRAZER

O

n the whole, I’m not in favour of boycotts. Those of us who oppose the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) crowd and their frequently noxious activities ought to be consistent when the pendulum swings the other way. Thus, in my opinion, if you feel as though there is something which upsets you and you don’t agree with it politically, you have a clear choice: participate or ignore it. Use the off switch if you feel that strongly, but don’t spout rubbish such as calling for an entire TV station to be boycotted. But very occasionally, when all else has failed, there is the opportunity to confront bigotry where it lurks. And since such opportunities are rare, it is almost the more heartening to report a comprehensive takedown of the suspended Labour MP for Derby North, Chris Williamson, by Josh Lee, a student at Nottingham University, last week. Williamson was invited to speak at the

university by its Centre for British Politics, and despite numerous protests that someone who had actually been suspended from the party over antisemitic comments should be given the hospitality of the campus, the event duly went ahead. It was a well-attended meeting – and, I guess, loathsome as I find Williamson’s views, I might have been curious to hear what he had to say. Jewish students were there in force and Williamson, by all accounts, did not get an easy ride. Despite lamentable attempts by politics

I’M SURE THE AVERAGE DERBY VOTER WANTS AN MP TO ATTEND ISSUES OF CRIME AND HOUSING

professor Mark Stuart, chairing the event, to shut him down, Josh Lee openly challenged Williamson. He accused of him of “trolling the Jewish community” on social media, and asked how he had “the audacity” to describe himself as an anti-racist when he had openly defended a slew of well-known antisemites”. Williamson’s response, I am happy to report, was limp in the extreme. He described attempts to paint him as an antisemite as “a smear” and then descended into an impenetrable self-serving burble which included references to Cable Street (of course) and having received bricks in the head for his antiracist work before he became an MP. I’m not one to encourage violence of any sort but at this point I couldn’t help feeling that the bricks in the head could have led to his present bizarre behaviour – because I’m damn sure that the ordinary voter of Derby North simply wants its MP to attend to issues of crime and housing, not attacks on the Jewish community. It’s a point that’s often made, but nevertheless bears repeating: few of the adults in the

Jewish community ever have the experience of confronting figures such as Williamson and the rest of the all-too-well-known sorry crew. Much though supportive messages from communal organisations such as the Board of Deputies or the Jewish Leadership Council are welcome, when it comes to the nitty-gritty there are only really three categories of challenge. There are high-profile – and good-on-’em – warriors such as Rachel Riley and Tracy Ann Oberman. There are street and meeting demonstrators, with whose tactics I don’t always agree, but it has to be acknowledged that they are not allowing the racists a free ride. And there are the Jewish students, as ever the ones in the front line, who so often have to take on the fight on behalf of the rest of us. So as we continue to celebrate our High Holy Days, let us wave a lulav in admiration for Josh Lee. We are lucky to have him, an informed and committed Jewish student who refused to let Chris Williamson off the hook. Kol hakavod, Josh.

For German far-right, the issue is still Jews DANA REGEV

COLOGNE-BASED JOURNALIST

W

hen the news from Halle started to arrive last Wednesday, Jewish communities around the world were in the middle of commemorating the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. Equipped with a rifle, ammunition and other military gear, the 27-year-old gunman tried to break into a synagogue in the eastern German city and shoot as many Jews as he could during prayers. The shooter, a farrightist, had every intention to commit a memorable massacre with a “worldwide effect”, according to Germany’s chief federal prosecutor. His attempts failed, thanks to the security measures at the entrance and the resourcefulness of the worshippers, helping to prevent a far greater disaster. Two people lost their lives outside the compound, but more than 50 Jewish men and women were inside – dozens of lives were saved. Prayers and condolences poured in from around the world. The attack sent shockwaves across Germany that reverberated

around the globe.“I am, like millions of people in Germany, shocked by this crime,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a trade union congress in Nuremberg. But for us, Jews who live in Germany, “shock” is the last reaction that comes to mind following this heinous attack. In fact, it was just a matter of time until the extreme far-right scene would turn back its spotlight on the true, eternal enemy of both Germany and western civilisation: the Jews. “Jews are the root of all problems,” the gunman, identified as Stephan Balliet of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, could be heard saying, among other xenophobic and misogynistic statements, while livestreaming his attack on Amazon’s streaming platform Twitch. He even had the temerity to deny the Holocaust, reminding us all that prejudice, conspiracy theories and hatred toward Jews never really vanished. Some in the Jewish community – albeit not many – were foolish enough to think that the far-right in Europe was now occupied by the 2015 immigration wave, mainly from Muslim countries. Some even had the audacity to celebrate the extremists’ rise. In Europe today, many of the attacks against Jews are carried out by Muslims,

THERE WERE ABOUT 1,800 REPORTED ANTIJEWISH CRIMES IN GERMANY LAST YEAR although there is much debate over the prevalence of such instances. Just a few days ago, a knife-wielding man tried to enter a Berlin synagogue, chanting swears against Israel and shouting “Allahu Akbar” in Arabic – a phrase that means “God is great” and is also often used by Islamists upon committing acts of terror. He was released from custody less than 24 hours after the incident and not charged with any crime, sparking concern among Jews in the country. But celebrating the rise of anti-Muslim extremists because of a few attacks perpetrated by radical Islamists is not only abhorrent but also superbly naive – antisemitism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and racism more typically go hand in hand. About 1,800 antisemitic crimes were

committed in Germany in 2018, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. Violent crimes against Jews specifically rose to 62 from 37 in 2017, according to a report released by Germany’s Interior Ministry earlier this year. The report showed that anti-foreigner crimes have also increased by nearly 20 percent, to 7,701 incidents in 2018 from 6,434 the previous year. The increase in hate crimes against Jews and mostly Muslim immigrants is no coincidence. The Halle shooter himself admitted in his 35-minute livestream that he had considered attacking a mosque, but then regretted it, realising that he had to eliminate the real problem and not just its symptoms, alluding to, who else, the Jews. The same ideology that leads far-right extremists to believe they should “stop the invasion” of Islam into Germany is the one making them believe in the trite yet dangerous conspiracy theory about a wellcoordinated global Jewish cabal. Anyone who thought Jews were somehow out of the picture when it comes to hate crimes on German soil is now forced to face this harsh reality: The far-right never really stopped targeting us.

Keep smashing our cultural glass ceiling LOUISE MOONT

WOMEN’S OFFICER, BOREHAMWOOD & ELSTREE SYNAGOGUE

‘O

utside the synagogues, the young girls stay chattering; they walk away from the synagogue… they leave behind them the wailing of the older generation and follow the urge for freedom and self-expression. Further and further from the synagogue they go, further away, to the dancing, tempting light of a fleeting joy.’ These are not the words of a shul onlooker over the recent High Holy Day period. Yet the challenge of ensuring young women in our communities need not seek out “the tempting light of a fleeting joy” to find fulfilment and selfexpression remains as great today as it ever has. These are the words of a humble Polish seamstress who, in 1917, despite having almost no formal Jewish education herself, created a revolution in Jewish women’s education. The prevailing view had been that the teaching of Torah to women was prohibited according to Jewish law, but in the context of growing

religious alienation among young women, Sarah Schenirer went on to open more than 200 ‘Beis Ya’akov’ schools with nearly 40,000 students in pre-war Poland. For the first time, women’s thirst for Torah was being quenched. One might have expected that a century later, the landscape would look completely different. Yet, there still seems to be a cultural glass ceiling preventing women from developing their interest in Torah education. This was a problem identified by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis when he came into office and there are opportunities available to women now that would have been unthinkable, even 10 years ago.

THERE SEEMS TO BE A CULTURAL GLASS CEILING PREVENTING WOMEN IN TORAH EDUCATION

When I became a member of the United Synagogue (US) and started a family, women could not serve as chairs of an Orthodox shul let alone as US trustees, educational initiatives seemed to be mainly aimed at men and the idea of a female Torah scholar was largely unheard of. I was recently elected as vice chair and women’s officer of Borehamwood and Elstree US. A woman’s officer is a new position, which ensures that catering for the spiritual needs of Jewish women is never an afterthought. There are now more than 30 such positions in UK shuls and the possibilities that presents are huge. It is now common for our community to host female Torah scholars and, importantly, it is widely accepted that men have as much to learn from these outstanding educators as women do. The Chief Rabbi’s Ma’ayan Programme, created a UK based qualification to train 10 outstanding female leaders and educators for the Jewish community. As well as being qualified advisors in Taharat Hamishpacha (laws of family purity), women’s health issues and pedagogy, their very presence as speakers and teachers in our communities ensures young women have

role models to emulate for religious leadership. Before Rosh Hashanah, I joined more than 300 women from 50 communities for an evening of study and motivation. It was the latest in a series of events under the Chief’s Neshama brand, created to encourage more women to take part in Torah learning opportunities. It was a remarkable evening of education by women for women for every level of knowledge. Some taught through traditional textual sources, others though art, music and even yoga. I left feeling enriched, although we have some distance yet to travel – but more than ever before, opportunities for women to learn are being provided by the Chief Rabbi, the US, and others – and they are increasing. Judaism has such wisdom and inspiration to offer. I’d encourage as many women as possible to reach out to their rebbetzen, women’s officers or Ma’ayan to explore the topics that interest them. There is no end to the fulfilment Torah study can provide, but so many women feel awkward taking the first step. During 5780, I hope many more women will follow in Sarah Schenirer’s footsteps and take a chance on Torah education.

1 SUCCOT CREATIVITY

Immanuel College got to use their creative talents in a succah-making activity and built edible succahs according to the halachot in the Mishna. “Really impressive and imaginative succahs were built and fun had by all,” the school said. Pupils were also invited to shake the arba minim (lulav and etrog).

3 BUZZING SHUL

Children at Kol Chai Hatch End Reform Community lent a hand to help build and decorate the succah. An eye-catching chocolate cake was the top raffle prize during the Macmillan coffee morning running simultaneously in the packed shul hall, with £500 raised for the charity amid a buzzing crowd of tots, teens and Kol Chai members.

4JFS TREATS

JFS students were able to shake the arba minim (four species), enjoy a treat and get into the holiday spirit. Some bought their own arba minim, arranged by Jewish Studies teacher Sharron Krieger.

A wooden succah with an interior dining area was installed in the heart of Canary Wharf for three days to mark Succot, with members of the community, including elderly residents from local Jewish centres. Canary Wharf Group’s Danny Seliger said, “We are looking forward to hosting the series of Succot luncheons and to reunite with members of Stepney Jewish Community Centre, Nightingale House, Holocaust Survivors’ Centre, Redbridge House and Lady Sarah Cohen House.”

7 VARIETY SUPPORT

Muslim women celebrated Succot at Alyth Synagogue in Golders Green and stood alongside Jewish congregants in a succah in a show of support to the community. The event was led by Nisa-Nashim, the Jewish-Muslim women’s network, in the aftermath of the far-right terror attack in Halle. Nisa-Nashim trustee Ahmereen Rezza (pictured holding the etrog) said: “I felt compelled to be here to show that, as a Muslim, I will not stand by when Jewish people are threatened, particularly in their place of worship.”

GOODNIGHT BUBBALA Forget the red balloon, the bowl of mush and the two playful kittens in the corner of bunny’s bedroom, because perennial children’s favourite, Goodnight Moon, has now been given a very yiddishe update. Goodnight Bubbala by Sheryl Haft and illustrated by Jill Weber is a “joyful” parody of Margaret Wise Brown’s literary essential first published 70 years ago and tells the story of a bunny’s bedtime routine – the Jewish way. Instead of curtains drawn and whispers of quiet and calm, this little bunny can look forward to the whole family getting involved, plus dancing, kvelling and a bit of noshing.

As Haft writes: “In the small blue room there was a bubbala and a little shmatta, and then – oy vey! – came the whole mishpacha!” Turn the page and there’s a chaotic scene with “two little bubbies schlepping their hubbies,” as well as an array of cousins and siblings and hip-looking parents; a mishmash of pots of kneidel and latkes and bagels. After the bunny bubbala welcomes the rowdy parade of family, food and music into the room, the story tenderly ends with an appreciation for the things and people in its life by telling them ‘goodnight.’ “I love the idea that I’ve given a little bit of joy to an adult and a child, even if it’s just for a few minutes,” says Haft. Goodnight Bubbala by Sheryl Haft is published by Penguin Random House USA, priced £14.27 (hardback). Available now.

Tallinn tales! Andrew Kaye discovers a communist past, high-tech future and hope for the Jewish community in Estonia’s capital city

S

uspended high above the din of Tallinn’s cobblestoned streets, we were greeted by a magnificent panorama in which Alexander Nevsky Cathedral competes with the gothic Holy Spirit Church for the attention of day-tripping tourists. Here at the Kohtuotsa Viewing Platform, there is possibly no better place to orientate oneself to the Estonian capital – but being simple folk, we were simply scoping out where to eat our first lunch. We finally settled on Kohvik Moon, which specialises in modern Russian fare and where culinary connoisseurs are in for a treat. I tucked into orange and honey-glazed salmon, while my partner’s pike fishcake came in a vermouth sauce. Soon, though, we felt the need to walk off the many servings of rye-bread and properly acquaint ourselves with the city. First we passed by the Tsarist naval base close to the abandoned Patarei prison, which provided a stark reminder that for all the city’s modern temptations, it has a rich, and often uncomfortable history harking back to its Soviet past. Intriguingly, the site is readying itself for development, but

the successful buyer must meet one condition: they have to dedicate space to an International Museum for the Victims of Communism. The site contrasts with the nearby Lennusadam, a seaplane harbour, where families can step into and explore submarines. Wherever we walked in the city, and it is highly walkable, we were confronted by Tallinn’s contradictions between a Communist past and a high-tech future. It was here that Skype was born, and where the Telliskivi Creative City’s Fotografiska space has already opened. The same venture, promising world-class photography, is planned to open later this year in Whitechapel. Dazzled by the neon blues of Telliskivi’s street art, Kalamaja neighbourhood makes for a tranquil pitstop.

Above: A Hotel Palace room Left: The Patarei prison

The wooden houses built 100 years ago, still stand here today – just. Some are the same colour as glazed apple pastries on display in nearby cafes. For history buffs, Tallinn is the gift that

keeps on giving. On our second day, we browsed Raekoja Plats, the main square. There are gabled 13th century merchants’ houses, handsomely terraced just metres from the old KGB detention cells. Just 10 minutes away, we went on a tour of the old KGB listening-post at the Hotel Viru – a must for anyone who recently watched Chernobyl, or simply loves a chilling story. Magrit, our guide, remembered the stultifying days of Soviet rule. The Viru was targeted at tourists who came to stay in the 1970s and 1980s. Some used to joke on their return to the West that the hotel was a miracle; it was “made of both concrete and microphones”, and Magrit left none of us in any doubt that for nearly two decades, guests were being spied on. Away from the city centre, there are marvellous walks in the Kadriorg park, which is where Peter the Great gifted his wife Catherine I with a baroque palace. Mon Repos made for a splendid place to rest, situated close by. For lunch, I indulged in a dish of chanterelles and caper cream-cheese gnocchi. Next came the modern art museum, Kumu, said to be the best gallery in the Baltics. However, the undoubted highlight of the whole trip was an organised visit to meet with Rabbi Kot of the Beit Bella synagogue. He warmly welcomed me into the wondrous building, opened in 2007, which followed six decades during which not a single synagogue existed in the whole of Tallinn. The building is now at the heart of Estonian efforts to rebuild Jewish community life. The country is believed to have a population of just under 2,000 Jews, but projects are underway to help the community grow. There is a mikveh

Beit Bella Synagogue

on-site and a Hebrew school. For a city where all Jewish life was extinguished during the Second World War, and prohibited during the Soviet era, Rabbi Kot added that now was the time for the community to cherish “freedom”. For all of Tallinn’s inhabitants, and on the 30th anniversary since the country’s famed Singing Revolution overcame Communism, freedom is perhaps prized above all else.

SEDRA Shabbat Chol Hamoed BY RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF On Shabbat Chol Hamoed we have two major readings: Parshat Ki Tisa, where the Yamim Tovim (High Holy Days) are mentioned and also Megillat Kohelet, which features King Solomon’s lengthy discussions about the meaning of life. At first, the two readings seem contradictory. The Yamim Tovim in particular, and Succot specifically, are times of unbridled rejoicing. Succot is referred to as Chag HaAsif, the harvest festival, and is an opportunity to rejoice in our physical achievements. It is also time to take pleasure in the spiritual achievements of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and to start to bring the inspiration down to our daily lives. Wonderful as this is, simcha or rejoicing can be a doubleedged sword. There is a slippery slope to escaping from the reality to life and losing ourselves in the thrill of the moment, which in turn can lead to us doing things we will regret later. Kohelet tells us to take life seriously; our days in this world are limited and we can’t take our physical or financial achievements with us when our time comes. The challenge of Shabbat Chol Hamoed Succot is to be able to strike a healthy balance between the two. Realising none of us will live forever ought to motivate not to put off until tomorrow that which can be done today. At the same time, Simcha, rejoicing, is a vital ingredient in life as we need to be able to take pleasure in what we have done. Judaism provides us with many milestones combining both ideas, enabling us to reflect and motivating us to achieve more.

This week’s number...

Figuring out Jewish history

18

BY RABBI ALEX CHAPPER Perhaps one of the best known numerical values in Judaism is 18, because it is synonymous with the word chai, meaning life. For this reason, monetary gifts are often given in multiples of chai and are invariably made as a donation to remember a departed loved one. Although as one gabbai (warden) once acerbically remarked, ‘Meit is worth more!’ (‘meit’ being the Hebrew word for ‘death’, which has the value of 440!) The Amidah, which is the central prayer of every service, was originally composed with 18 blessings and is still referred to as the Shemoneh Esrei – the Hebrew words for the number 18. The Talmud records a variety of reasons for this: To correspond to the

18 vertebrae in a person’s spine, the 18 times that our forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are mentioned together in the Torah or the 18 times God’s name is mentioned in the Shema.

FOR MATZAH TO BE KOSHER IT MUST BE MADE IN A MAXIMUM OF 18 MINUTES

There’s even a connection to food, because for matzah to be kosher for use on Pesach, it must be made in a maximum of 18 minutes, as this is the time it takes for dough to rise. That is why you see the words ‘18 minutes’ printed on the box. Although golf is a popular game among Jewish people, I’ve not been able to uncover the significance of it consisting of 18 holes, but suggest it may reflect life itself being a journey into the unknown, where we encounter the rough and fairways with the ultimate aim to make it back to the clubhouse for a l’chaim! In the 18th chapter of Vayikra, God instructs us: ‘You shall keep My laws and My rules, by the pursuit of which a person shall live: I am God.’ The phrase v’chai bahem – and live by them is the source of the Jewish principle that the sanctity of human life is paramount.  Rabbi Alex Chapper serves Elstree & Borehamwood Synagogue and is the Children’s Rabbi

Progressively Speaking

The Bible Says What?

Is Scotland right to ban smacking?

‘God can bear grudges, we can’t’ BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS Leviticus 19:18 “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people.” Have we been as forgiving as we should have over the past weeks? Do you really carry no grudges, as Leviticus 19 asks? It seems a tall order, given human nature, but is especially galling when Exodus 20:5 and Numbers 14:18 both tell us God punishes children for the sins of their parents to the fourth generation. This sounds like He holds the odd grudge or two! Living in the Jewish community is a blessing. We celebrate and mourn together, we feed each other. But let’s be honest, we all know someone – perhaps even ourselves - who is still fretting about being ignored at Kiddush, or not being invited to the Cohen’s simchah. Grudges come pretty naturally. These are the micro-annoyances, the things that don’t really matter

in the big scheme of things, but that can so easily become eternal grudges that niggle and poison. But not all grudges are small. Are we also expected to let go of our hurt against bullies and abusers? Grudgingly resenting others who have slighted us doesn’t really harm the person we hold a grudge against, however much one might wish it did, but it can harm the holder of such resentment. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to let these things go – this verse jumps out at me because the struggle is very real. The hardest work of the High Holy Days isn’t the work of asking for forgiveness, it’s the work of letting go of the many grudges we hold onto, hurting ourselves rather than anyone else. Equally, we should know it’s OK if there are bigger hurts we aren’t yet ready to forgive.

Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers is community educator at Movement for Reform Judaism

BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY This month, Scotland became the first country in the UK to make it a criminal offence for parents to smack their children. The move will give children in Scotland the same protection from assault as adults. The MSP who introduced the bill, John Finnie, said it will “send a strong message that violence is never acceptable in any setting”. As a rabbi and mother-of-three, I couldn’t agree more. Whether smacking should be dealt with via legislation is a nuanced debate, of which I can see both sides, but it’s also clear that hurting a child is simply wrong. On first glance it appears our Jewish tradition supports smacking and indeed many Jewish and Christian figures down the years have used our texts to do so. After all, King Solomon himself says: “They who hold back punishment hate their child; but they who love their child discipline it from an early age.”

Not to mention the Deuteronomy commandment that a “rebellious child who does not obey their father and mother” should be “stoned to death”. However by the Talmudic period, the cruel rules were replaced with a new emphasis on kindness and compassion. As Dr William Berkson, director of America’s Jewish Institute for Youth and Family, points out: “As a result of these rabbinic teachings, traditional Jewish homes were noted for treating their children with love and warmth.”

I think of the Torah story of Moses striking the rock, rather than speaking to it, as being a helpful reminder to me of the need to try and not deal with my children in that moment of anger, but to respond to them from a calmer place. After all, how can we teach our kids how to act when they are angry or frustrated if we model the opposite behaviour? Today’s Jewish professionals also support a smacking ban. Norwood work and family support manager April Esteras stated: “I am in favour of a smacking ban as is the social work profession as a whole.” With recent studies finding that smacking doesn’t improve behaviour – indeed, it was found to make children more aggressive and antisocial – isn’t it time it was banned in the rest of the UK too? Rabbi Charley Baginksy is Liberal Judaism’s director of strategy and partnerships

DAVID SEGEL TRAVEL AGENT

WEST END TRAVEL Dear David My wife and I would like to experience a Jewishinterest visit to Gibraltar. We’d appreciate advice and suggestions for a budgetconscious kosher weekend break next spring. Richard Dear Richard A spring Jewish interest trip to Gibraltar should guarantee you warm, Mediterranean weather and is a perfect time

to visit a community dating back to the 14th century. British Airways and EasyJet operate daily lowcost flights from the UK to Gibraltar, flying you to the famous Rock in under three hours. I suggest you base your stay at one of the excellent reasonably priced hotels situated around Main Street in the heart of “Jewish Gibraltar”. This will give you an instant taste and connection to the warm, friendly and very vibrant 700-strong Jewish community. All the places of interest are near one another and just a short stroll from Line Wall Road, home to the largest of four very ancient synagogues. Eating will not be a problem with the nearby

kosher restaurants welcoming Jewish visitors from all over the world. You will find places of Jewish interest all over Gibraltar, interlinked with Spanish, Moroccan and Arabic architectural influence. You should certainly book an organised sightseeing tour of Gibraltar, taking in places of interest around the historic Rock. The tour will, of course, include “mingling” with the world famous Barbary Apes perched high above the ancient caves at the very top of the 1396ft Rock and from there offering a fantastic panoramic view overlooking Spain and the Straits of Gibraltar. Be assured you will enjoy a fascinating, interesting and most rewarding weekend.

CARL WOOLF CRIMINAL DEFENCE SOLICITOR

NOBLE SOLICITORS Dear Carl My boss was recently disqualified as a director and said the company must close. However, he has told me one way to prevent this would be for me to be a director and run the company legally, with his guidance. I’ve since been warned this might be illegal. Is this correct? Tanya

All our services are free Call us on 020 8346 4000 or visit www.resource-centre.org Follow us on @resourcecharity resource employment advice centre Charity Reg No: 1106331 Registered in England No: 5211299

Helping unemployed members of the community get back to work

Dear Tanya This is correct. I have dealt with many cases where an individual becomes disqualified and they have asked their spouse to take over as director to keep the company going. This sounds very much to me like you are being asked to take over the company while your boss acts as a shadow director. This is where an individual asks someone to run a company on their behalf while they influence and guide how that business is managed. If an individual is made subject to a director’s disqualification order, for whatever the reason, it does not prevent them from working in that company but they are unable to run the company, meaning they will not be able to be a manager or director.

One way around is for them to apply to a court for permission to do so but in the absence of permission, it is illegal for them to do so. It is also illegal and a breach of the DDO to ask someone to run a company for them under their instruction. If a company runs in these circumstances, then the shadow director could still be liable for any debts of the company and be prosecuted. In addition, anyone running the company, on behalf of a disqualified person who acts as a shadow director, may also be acting illegally and therefore be criminally liable and open to prosecution while also becoming liable for the debts of the company. The penalties, if found guilty, range from a fine up to two years in prison.
