85 ANNUAL CEREMONY & PARADE TH

17TH NOVEMBER 2019 THE CENOTAPH, WHITEHALL This is the 85th AJEX Annual Ceremony & Parade. For all these years we have been proud to stand as a symbol representing all those in our community that have been prepared to contribute, serve and make the final sacrifice for our monarch and country. The AJEX annual Ceremony & Parade is an opportunity to remind ourselves and others that we are a proud, loyal British community; a community that has never ceased to

contribute and play its part for our nation’s security. Last year, as part of the commemoration of the centenary of the end of the First World War we had one of the largest Parades for nearly two decades, but we need to make the broader community see its relevance. Quite simply we need each and every one of you to support us by attending the parade. Last year saw one of the greatest turnouts since

the sad demise of the Second World War generation, this is why we have set the community a new challenge. We would like all those attending to bring a friend that has never been before. If we can do this we’ll grow year on year. The Parade procession marches down Whitehall led by a military band and halts at the Cenotaph for a short Remembrance service and the laying of wreaths. We are the only

faith community that has permission to conduct our own service on Whitehall. Let’s demonstrate to the whole country why the AJEX Annual Ceremony & Parade is so important and why we remember the men and women of the past, as well thank those in our community who serve in the Armed Forces today. Who we remember at this time: 1944 – 2019 75 years from some of the key events of the Second World War BY PAULA KITCHING 2019 has also seen its fair share of anniversaries with key ones being the 75th anniversary of D Day, the Battle of Monte Cassino and Arnhem. D Day is usually reported but it is important to reflect on all the battles where possible and the men and women that served to stop the Nazis from destroying all of Europe. In mid May 1944 the third major attempt to take Monte Cassino and break the Nazis Gustav line began with a huge Allied offensive including Polish Forces of the Polish II Corps, otherwise known as Anders Army, after their leader Lieutenant General Wladyslaw Anders. The Allies used everything they had to fight up the and after days of brutal fighting the Polish forces raised the Polish flag and then the British Union Jack on what was left of the Monastery buildings – Monte Cassino had fallen. Among many of the Allied Forces

were many Jewish soldiers and that was particularly the case amongst the Polish troops. In the Polish military cemetery on the valley sides not far from the rebuilt Monte Cassino monastery is a whole section dedicated to Polish Jewish soldiers that fell in battle. Arnhem The Battle of Arnhem in 1944 or Operation Market Garden as it was known was part of the plan to liberate Western Europe. The use of airborne troops including those parachuted into the invasion area and those landed by gliders and the glider pilots themselves were to be essential in the attack. One of those pilots was a Jewish young man called Frank Ashleigh from East London. Frank had received his Army Flying Badge in July 1944 at part of the Glider Pilot Regiment of the British Army. He was still under 20 years of age. Frank was part of a plan that included 140 aircraft and 320 glid-

ers, around 35,000 parachute and glider troops leading an attack into the Netherlands around the three towns of Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem. “It was what we had volunteered and trained for” said Frank Ashleigh nearly 75 years later “we didn’t want to sit around waiting for the end of the war we wanted to be a part of it”. “We were told that we would be capturing a bridge and that we were to

AJEX fighting anti-Semitism for over 80 years A call to arms from the AJEX National Chairman – and combatting antisemitism BY MIKE BLUESTONE As a veteran myself I am absolutely dedicated to raising the profile of AJEX and the importance of the role of Jewish service in the UK. At a recent meeting of the AJEX Executive Committee, we also resolved to raise our profile in the fight against a worrying resurgence in anti-Semitic activity. A central part of AJEX’s foundation was to fight anti-Semitism and to combat anti-Jewish prejudice and propaganda wherever it raised its head. AJEX members challenged Mosely’s Black Shirts on the across the UK, they were present at the Battle of Cable Street in 1936 and they marched with pride through London in our Remembrance Parade. Following the Second World War and

the defeat of fascism we had hoped that anti-Semitism might disappear, but the members of AJEX remained vigilante. AJEX members supported the activities of the 43 Group when the anti-Jewish lies began to be spread once more in Britain. Today anti-Semitism in the UK has changed from Black shirt activists lurking on street corners, to a more nuanced appearance, but the lies remain the same and the danger is just as acute. That is why we have dedicated ourselves and our education and Remembrance programmes to once more being part of the battle against hatred and anti-Semitism. In this regard we can support the work of the CST and the Board of Deputies by highlighting the support we

provide to our Jewish armed forces personnel, and for Jewish veterans. The values espoused by AJEX need to be heard across the UK at this challenging time for the community, and we will not remain silent in the face of those who defame and malign our community. We will continue to hold our annual Parade, we will continue to attend the RBL Remembrance Sunday Parade and other commemorative events – we will keep flying our flag high and reminding people and of this Jewish community’s past and its ongoing service. We will oppose hatred and we will openly stand against prejudice. For over 80 years we have been fighting this battle, help us to try and make the generation who started it proud!

get ready to depart”. The crossing was extremely dangerous – it was in daylight and the glider itself had no defences. After a successful flight and landing Frank and his co-pilot jumped out of the aircraft set up the ramps and within a couple of minutes the jeep drove off with all their equipment and Frank never saw them again, now they were to be infantry soldiers. During a recce a few

days later he and a few other men were surrounded by Germans. After three days of holding out in a church, firing at the Germans the men were forced to surrender. Frank was quite open that he was Jewish but his German captors made no comment on it “they treated me the same as everyone else – a British soldier” said Frank many years later. He was sent to a POW camp and following a forced march in January 1945 he and the other POW’s were liberated by the Red Army. “I was sent home the very next day, I weighed six and a half stone in weight. Frank’s story is one of many thousands of Arnhem, perhaps a lucky one, his glider co-pilot was killed later in the war. Frank is a reminder that whether the overall battle was a success or a failure is only ever the big picture at the heart of it are the brave men and women that serve and helped to secure the freedoms that we have today.

Helping our Jewish service men and women now and always BY COLIN SHIEFF QVRM TD FRCS After the end of the First World War nearly one in six British servicemen had been killed. Another two in six had experienced some type of injury. Some injuries were modest and followed by quick recovery; others left residual and often devastating life-long effects on physical and mental health. Irrespective of any injury, no-one returned from the front line without difficult and painful memories and the families were affected also. The raison d’etre for AJEX’s welfare division is to minimise need that arises directly from military service or following it. Our primary objectives are to maintain independence wherever possible and to do all that we can to ensure the dignity of those we serve. The nature of our assistance, whether through comradeship or in a more practical fashion, may have changed over the years but the presence of need, sometimes not openly acknowledged, has not lessened. We are still assisting Jewish veterans from the Second War, from the days of National Service and from later conflicts together with their dependants. We are also supporting individuals who have recently retired from Regular and Reserve service, and a small number who are still serving in HM Forces. Requests for assistance come from individuals or their families, from regional AJEX

branches, and from external organisations already involved in their care. Each application is dealt with in accordance with our guidelines. It may be necessary to share relevant information, confidentially and with permission, with other agencies including Service and non-Service charities and statutory bodies to maximise the benefit we can offer. Occasionally a sympathetic ear or more practical assistance or signposting to other organisations will suffice. Sometimes on-off financial grants may be made after a formal assessment of need; for example replacement of household items, domestic repairs, purchase of winter clothing, or funding of health and mobility aids. In a few complex situations, often where the individual is elderly or frail, considerable assistance will be needed to maintain a stable domestic situation; in such cases the financial costs may be met jointly by several charities working together (almonisation). We also make thrice yearly smaller ‘Festival grants’ to individuals and couples with needs that can be met in this way, and individual grants to regional organisations providing support to Jewish ex-service personnel in their local communities.

MP condemns ‘appalling’ desecration at 300-year-old Kent graveyard

‘Disgraceful’: The damage left by vandals

MPs and community leaders this week condemned the “disgraceful” attack on a historic Jewish cemetery in Kent, in which headstones were found shattered and upended. Police are investigating the desecration and appealing for witnesses following the assault in the burial grounds of the Grade II*-listed Chatham Memorial Synagogue. It is believed the damage may have been caused between September 27 and October 4, police said. Kent Police has reviewed CCTV and is offering crime prevention advice to those who look after the cemetery, which is thought to date back to 1700. Chief Inspector Ian Dyball said: “This type of incident is thankfully very rare, but I appreciate

the impact it has had on the local community. “Local patrols will continue to monitor the area and if anyone has any concerns I would encourage them to speak to the officers and PCSOs when they see them.” Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said the “disgraceful” act of vandalism “will cause huge upset to the families of those buried in the cemetery and to all right-thinking people.” She added: “The low lives who perpetrated this hateful attack should face the full force of the law.” Dalia Halpern-Matthews, chair of trustees at the shul, revealed the Dialogue Society, Kent Muslim Welfare Association and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community have all extended messages of support.

“I have had phone calls, emails and face-toface contact with the local Muslim communities who have even gone as far as to offer members of their communities to help us clear up,” she said. Local MP Kelly Tolhurst tweeted she was, “horrified by this appalling attack on a Jewish cemetery in my constituency. Incidents like this should scare us all, not least at a time of rising antisemitism. My thoughts are with the families of those buried there and with the wider Kent Jewish community”. Chatham Memorial Synagogue plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign to improve the security of the cemetery. News / Labour lists / MEP gaff / School tables

Fears over ‘unfit’ Labour candidates Fears have been expressed that candidates accused of making antisemitic comments could be selected as potential Labour parliamentary candidates at the next general election. The party was plunged into a fresh row this week after questions were raised over some potential candidates’ social media histories. One was shortlisted for a seat, while another was considered by his local party before due diligence checks were carried out. Added to the shortlist for Ealing North, councillor Aysha Raza was previously referred by Labour Against Antisemitism after appearing to question the removal in 2012 of the controversial mural painted by graffiti artist Mear One, which depicts hook-nosed bankers playing a game of Monopoly on the backs of workers. In2012, shewrote: “Controversialmural inthe East End being painted over for being depicted antisemitic! #OneRuleForYou&AnotherForUs and #FreeSpeech.” In 2013, she tweeted that she had been “traumatised by the hours spent in that Zionist shop” after buying a suit. Raza remains on the shortlist at the time of going to press. Speaking to Buzzfeed News on Tuesday, she apologised “for any hurt my words caused” and revealed she had undertaken antisemitism training with the Jewish Labour Movement. Elsewhere, Luke Cresswell, an ex-councillor previously referred to Labour over allegations of antisemitism, was considered by his local

Shortlisted candidate Aysha Raza questioned the removal of Mear One’s mural in 2012

party as a possible candidate – but did not progress further after diligence checks centrally. He was suspended in 2016 and later reinstated after sharing an image of a blood-soaked Star of David and appearing to compare Israel to Nazi Germany on social media. Cresswell apologised for the posts, saying: “I made mistakes in what I have said in the past and, of course, I regret these. It has never been my intention to offend or hurt anyone and I am sorry if my insensitive remarks have done so.” This comes after Labour announced last

month a new “fast-track selection process” for new candidates, amid growing speculation that a general election could be imminent. The process rolled out in key seats gives responsibility of drawing up a longlist of candidates to the party’s ruling body, which is then presented to a panel comprising national executive committee (NEC) members and both regional and local figures for shortlisting. Ruth Smeeth, MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, speculated on Thursday that a number of candidates “completely unfit to represent

any political party, never-mind the Labour Party in electoral office” could make short lists. “We will be able to fully assess when the shortlists have been done, but someone is not doing their job properly.” She accused Labour of “failing miserably to do appropriate background checks on candidates,” adding: “This is horrifying and it’s either complete incompetence or it’s being intentionally done. This is a national thing, not a local thing.” A spokesperson for the Jewish Leadership Council added: “It’s impossible to put a number on candidates with problematic histories that we don’t know about.” The Jewish Labour Movement joined the chorus of criticism, with a spokesperson saying: “We warned the party for years against its weakwilled approach to tackling antisemitism. “Scores of individuals with deeply troubling views have been admitted. On countless occasions they have failed to discipline those who espouse hateful rhetoric. It is no surprise the party seem incapable of doing due diligence.” Responding to Smeeth’s comments, a Labour Party source said: “This is categorically untrue. Staff are working incredibly hard to complete due diligence checks on thousands of applications across the country. “Ultimately all candidates who are selected by their local party will ultimately need to be endorsed by the NEC.”

She said: “I represent more than 500,000 Jewish constituents in the north west of England, and I know we cannot be complacent.” The MEP has since said it was an “administrative mistake” after the remarks were highlighted in a clip on Twitter shared by Sussex Friends of Israel.

Yesodey HaTorah Senior Girls’ School in Stamford Hill achieved a score of 1.08 in the Progress 8 table and came 31st in the national league table of state-funded secondary schools. However, there was an overall dip in the performance of Jewish schools, none of which appeared in the top 30 places, despite four Jewish schools having appeared in the top 20 in 2018. They included Yesodey HaTorah, Menorah High School in Dollis Hill, Beis Yaakov High School in Manchester and Yavneh College

News / Virgin’s London–Tel Aviv route / Boycott ‘vandalism’ / Facebook guide

Branson hails ‘can do’ Israel Sir Richard Branson has hailed Israel’s entrepreneurial flair as he touched down at Ben Gurion to celebrate Virgin Atlantic’s new route between London and Tel Aviv, writes Jenny Frazer. He kissed the tarmac after disembarking with cabin crew waving Israeli and British flags at the start of a three-day trip. Branson – fresh off a morning flight from Miami before joining a packed Virgin Atlantic plane to Tel Aviv – spoke warmly of the attractions of the Israeli city for short breaks, and as a centre for the global gay community. He also praised the “can-do” spirit of Israel’s tech entrepreneurs. Flanked by Virgin Atlantic’s Israeli CEO Shai Weiss and the deputy director of Israel’s Tourism Ministry, Pini Shani, Branson laughed and joked with the press. But he turned serious when asked by Jewish News about the issue of the boycott of Israel. “There are definitely big issues that need to be sorted out in this region,” he said. “You can’t leave something festering in your body year after year, decade after decade. We very much

hope that this country can have brave leaders who say, enough’s enough, let’s cut through and get it sorted. In the meantime I think trade should continue. The vast majority of Israelis are great entrepreneurs and they need tourists. We are happy to do that.” The visit will include an opportunity for Israeli entrepreneurs to ‘Pitch to Rich’. Within hours of arrival, Branson had met Uri Geller and tried making hummus. The Tel Aviv route, which has carried 14,000 passengers since its inauguration on 25 September, is aimed at promoting the city as the central Middle East hub between Europe and the US, according to Virgin’s chief commercial officer, Juha Jarvinen. He told Jewish News: “2,700 people travel every day from Israel to New York and onwards to other cities.” Virgin is seeking a share of that market. Weiss said Virgin’s recent acqusition, the budget airline FlyBe, would be renamed Virgin Connect and enable provincial travellers to link to the London–Tel Aviv route. Although the company acknowledged that it was targeting

A booklet aimed at protecting Jews on Facebook from antisemitism has been published by the tech giant in collaboration with two of British Jewry’s most prominent organisations. The Community Security Trust and the Board of Deputies helped to launch the guide during National Hate Crime Awareness Week. Along with 30,000 reviewers, Facebook uses algorithms to detect antisemitic posts before they are seen, the guide says. CST is a “trusted flagger” of harmful content. CST said the guide “shows increasing awareness at Facebook of the issue of antisemitism and how it affects our Jewish community”.

One year since Pittsburgh attack / News

Shooting survivor: Mum loved life A survivor of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in 2018 has spoken of the day she lost her “amazing” mum, as the world prepares to mark a year since the deadly assault. Andrea Wedner was with her mother Rose Mallinger in the Tree of Life synagogue when a gunman armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle walked in and began shooting worshippers at 9.50am on 27 October. It was the deadliest ever antisemitic attack on US soil and this week, a year on, Wedner spoke about what she recalls from that day. “We were both very scared. I just remember saying ‘get down’, that was all,” she recalled, adding that the last thing she said to her 97-yearold mother was “I love you”. The CST statement tells synagogues to “keep doors closed and locked unless you are letting known people in or out”.

UNI INVESTIGATES HITLER T-SHIRT A student union is investigating an image of a T-shirt worn to a social event and circulated online that read “Hitler wanted my kind alive.” The picture, reportedly shared by a student on Snapchat last week,

appears to have been taken at an unauthorised “white T-shirt social” – which involves writing messages on blank tops. In a statement, the University of Leicester’s student union said: “The entire executive team would like to sincerely

apologise for the incident and take accountability for the student’s behaviour. “We will ensure we tackle any antisemitism and make it wholly clear that white T-shirt socials are not allowable by the union.”

Councils urged to adopt IHRA definition Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick has urged local authorities to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. In a drive to stamp out racism, he wrote to councils last week, asking them to use the definition used by the government. The IHRA defines antisemitism as

a “certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews” and says physical and verbal examples can be directed towards Jews and non-Jews. Its 11 examples include accusing “Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel” and “denying the fact, scope, mechanisms or intentionality” of the Holocaust.

News / All-female spacewalk / Iran ban / Facebook criticised / Spielberg admission

Astronaut now aims for the Moon A marine biologist has set her sights on becoming the first woman to walk on the surface of the Moon after taking part in an historic all-female spacewalk. Jessica Meir, a Swedish-US national with an Israeli father, emerged from the International Space Station (ISS) to take part in the first all-woman spacewalk last Friday, with fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch. Back on board the ISS on Monday, she said: “It was an incredible experience. It’s difficult to put into words the mixture of emotions and feelings you have when you’re going out of the door for the first time.” Meir, who has a doctorate in marine biology and is a trained anaesthetist, has studied the physiological effects

of extreme conditions in animals, and said her body developed “muscle memory” after six years’ training, much of which was done underwater in a neutral buoyancy lab. “I will never forget that moment coming out of the hatch, looking down and seeing just my boots and the Earth below. It’s such a spectacular and beautiful sight, it was really quite overwhelming.” The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, but Koch and Meir said the gender split in their astronaut class had been 50:50. Meir was accepted into the class in 2013, and said she dreamt of walking in space back in her class at school. “In my high school yearbook, under ‘future plans’, I wrote ‘to go for a space-

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir has made history by completing the first all-female spacewalk

walk’, so I’ve finally checked that box,” she said. Meir and Koch are now three weeks into the six-month mission on the ISS, during which time they will capture visiting vehicles, undertake scientific experiments and perform other spacewalks, but Meir said her dreams did not end there.

“Another dream would be to go to the Moon. That’s always the image I had. From the very first drawing I did in the first grade, I was standing on the surface of the Moon, so maybe I’ll make that my new dream.” Both Meir and Koch are listed in a group of 12 women in the Astronaut Corps, one of whom will become the

first woman to walk on the surface of the Moon in 2024, which NASA hopes will be “transformational for young women around the world”. Meir added that daydreaming from the windows of ISS, looking at the Earth 250 miles below, was “one of our favourite pastimes up here, it’s an unbelievable sight”.

Iran banned by judo Actor slams Facebook boss SPIELBERG BULLIED body after boycott Iran’s national judo team has been banned from all competitions by the International Judo Federation after an Iranian judoka was instructed to withdraw from the World Championships in Tokyo to avoid fighting an Israeli. The decision was conveyed in writing on Tuesday following the country’s suspension after Saeid Mollaei was ordered to withdraw from the tournament to avoid having to compete against Sagi Muki from Israel on 28 August. The body said Iran had failed to fully comply with the

Olympic Charter and the IJF statutes, which “rejects all forms of discrimination”. Disciplinary procedures were implemented last month and the Iran Judo Federation was issued with a “protective suspension”. Mollaei said he was “instructed [to withdraw] by the Iran Judo Federation’s president, the Iran National Olympic Committee’s president and the Iran national coach”, but the Iranian team said his statements “were false and were made to speed up his change of nationality process”.

Actor Sacha Baron Cohen has criticised Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg for his laissez-faire stand on free speech. Both men are Jewish, with Baron Cohen the grandson of a Holocaust survivor, but the actor – known for creating characters such as Ali G, Borat and Admiral General Aladeen – reacted angrily on Twitter after the multi-billionaire tech boss invoked the First Amendment and the civil rights movement to defend his refusal to limit inflammatory discourse on Facebook. Zuckerberg (pic-

tured left) has long been criticised for not clamping down on offensive comments that some deem hate speech, and defended his company’s proud commitment to free speech “inspired by American tradition”. Baron Cohen (right) wrote: “If he owned a fancy restaurant and 4 neo-Nazis came goose-stepping into the dining room and were talking loudly about wanting to kill ‘Jewish scum’, would he serve them an elegant eight course meal, or tell them to get the f**k out?”

“I didn’t think of it as hate, but thought of it as a shame. I was ashamed of a lot of things and they managed with enough chiding and bullying to make me feel ashamed of being Jewish. Inside, I have always been very proud to be Jewish. “I was on the receiving end of people’s power trips and that was my main experience with being hated, something I had no control over. “I felt like an outcast, and when I got older, I realised bullying is a very pervasive tool to make other people feel like they are empowered.”

YOUR LIFE. SAVING MY LIFE.

Schindler’s List director Steven Spielberg has revealed how childhood antisemitic bullying made him feel “ashamed” to be Jewish. While on a visit to India, just weeks after his new sixpart documentary Why We Hate aired on the Discovery Channel, the Oscar-winning director and producer spoke about his early experiences of anti-Jewish hatred. “I encountered antisemitism in my [elementary] school. Some popular kids would pick on less popular kids, in my case zero popularity, growing up,” Steven he said.

‘Dream becomes reality’

AGEING STUDY Torah outside ALEH. “All my encounters with ALEH have been redemptive. Everyone who enters finds themselves surrounded by angels. It is a place of pure chesed, true kindness and compassion.” Noé found success in property, and Sacks referenced this in his statement, saying: “As true builders, Leo and Susan have never forgotten where they come from, and part of that is remembering that they are not alone, that they

have a responsibility to others.” Noé said his parents were “very modest people who would have been overwhelmed by the fanfare of this beautiful event”, but who “focused on productivity and would want to see this building be productive in caring for our neediest children and providing employment to so many”.

Claire’s daughter has learning disabilities. What support should she get? Nothing, apparently. Claire opened the envelope, and it sat staring up at her: a big fat zero. That was the assessment of the disability needs of her daughter, Emma by the PIP (Personal Independence Payment) assessor. Emma, who has Asperger’s syndrome and an IQ of 66. Emma, who can’t take care of herself, or travel independently, or dress herself. To get PIP, you had to fill in a 44-page assessment form and be interviewed by an assessor. The assessor asked questions like “can she cook?”, Claire would answer that Emma couldn’t and the assessor would write down: “yes, she can cook”. And so it went on. That’s how you get to a score of zero, which meant no allowance at all.

Seven research projects combining the best British and Israeli minds have won £2.8 million in medical funding, with one hoping to “reverse the effects of ageing”. The winning projects were announced on Wednesday, after the British Council and the British Embassy in Israel identified the most promising bilateral submissions in the field of ageing. They will be awarded nearly £2.8m from the Britain Israel Research and Academic Exchange Partnership (BIRAX), a £10m programme to support UK-Israeli research. The projects include one between Cambridge University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which “will provide clues as to how the effects of age might be reversed therapeutically”.

A pop-up kosher restaurant is being launched once a week by the United Synagogue (US). The Barnet Synagogue-based ‘People’s PopUp’ will offer a “dignified dining experience” to the community, and to those less fortunate. The social enterprise is expected to serve locals, including the elderly, as well as asylum seekers who use the US’ drop-in centres, families supported by Jewish charities, clients at the Chipping Barnet Food Bank and homeless and domestic abuse shelters. Yael Peleg, of the US’ Jewish Living Division, said: “It will offer a dignified dining experience with linen and china. For a small charge, guests will enjoy a nutritious and filling two-course meal served by volunteer waiting staff.”

A “game-changing” new special education school and children’s rehabilitation centre in Israel has been dedicated in honour of a late Jewish couple from London. ALEH’s new Bet Chayil Centre in Bnei Brak was dedicated last week in honour of Salomon and Ruchi Noé, parents of philanthropist Leo Noé, in a ceremony involving former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks. The centre will support 350 children and young adults with special needs, with a variety of services such as early intervention programmes, pre-schools and individual therapies. It will also feature a dental clinic, an ‘assistive devices’ workshop, an animal-assisted therapy centre, a rehabilitative sensory park and Olympic-sized hydrotherapy pool. Joining Noé at the ceremony was his wife, Susan, and their extended family for festivities presided over by Sacks and ALEH director-general Rabbi Yehuda Marmorstein, who inaugurated a specially-commissioned Sefer Torah. “It is thrilling to see our dream become a reality,” said Marmorstein, after Sacks placed a mezuzah on the building. “I remember sitting with Leo and Susan in their home 18 years ago, discussing how a special education school and rehabilitative centre of this size and scope could totally transform disability care in Israel,” he recalled. “It is time to usher in a new era for Israel’s disability community.” Sacks, a close family friend, said: “I was moved to tears as we all danced together with the Sefer

Asian-Jewish network to launch Jewish and Asian business leaders are set to descend on Lord’s Cricket Ground next month for a new initiative bringing together the two communities. Organisers say the AsianJewish Business Network – to be held on 4 November and media partnered by Jewish News and Asian Voice – will bring together professionals from sectors including law, property and finance for a day of networking and to encourage trade. Speakers include BBC News economics editor Faisal Islam and Sir Lloyd Dorfman, founder of foreign exchange business Travelex who chairs Doddle, a retail business enabling people to collect or return their online shopping from train stations.

Cobra Beer’s founder Lord Bilimoria will be in conversation with entrepreneur Emma Sinclair, while fin-tech expert Ron Kalifa will be chatting on stage

to Jewish News business editor Candice Krieger. Sir Lloyd said: “It’s important to bring both communities together. We have so much in common in

terms of our shared passion for family, community and education.” Organiser Russell Bahar said the day would be “filled with business figures from a range of corporate industries to network, share best practice and, ultimately, do and encourage more trade.” The event is headline sponsored by foreign exchange company Currencies Direct and law firm Axiom Stone Solicitors. Jewish News’ Justin Cohen said the event “promises to be a great way of harnessing and maximising the synergy between British Jews and Asians who make such a valuable contribution to our country’s economy”. Details: www.ajbn.co.uk

RAFI SOLVES RUBIK’S CUBE FOR ‘TWIN’ A puzzle-loving barmitzvah boy stunned his parents after solving 13 Rubik’s cubes in three minutes and 40 seconds in a bid to raise money for Jewish Child’s Day. Yavneh College pupil Rafi Niman, 13, from Borehamwood, raised nearly £600 at his own barmitzvah, in London, earlier this month by solving 13 cubes back-to-back. “I’ve never heard of [world records] for 13 Rubik’s cubes, but there’s a world record of

somebody solving 100 Rubik’s cubes,” Rafi said. All money raised will help Rafi’s “twin”, a boy in Israel with special needs, celebrate his own rite of passage as part of the charity’s twinning programme. “I wanted to make a difference to a child,” said Rafi, who aged nine taught himself how to solve the puzzle. He is ranked 77th in the UK across all age groups by the World Cube Association.

Muslim group holds first Succot event A Muslim interfaith leader has warned that levels of antisemitism are the “canary in the coal mine” for intolerance against other communities. Fiyaz Mughal, founder of Muslims Against Antisemitism (MAAS), described discrimination against Jews as “that weather-vane […] that canary in the coalmine”. “If Jewish communities are being targeted, you can bet your bottom dollar, other communities will be targeted,” he said, adding that Jewish and Muslim communities share a “deep sense of loyalty” in the fight for human rights and “a sense of comfort with each other”. Mughal spoke to Jewish News at the first Succot event organised by MAAS, which was held in the north London home of Senior Masorti Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, who described interfaith dialogue as “supremely important at this time of fragmentation”. More than 20 guests attended the event, which was titled Muslims and Jews: Embracing our common humanity, including councillors from across the political spectrum and interfaith activists, along with Mehboob Khan, London Councils’ Labour adviser.

Ex-Nazi guard ‘haunted by images’ A 93-year-old former Nazi concentration camp guard has said the “images of misery and horror” have haunted him his entire life as he went on trial in Germany accused of being an accessory to murder . Bruno Dey is accused of 5,230 counts of accessory to murder in relation to his time as a guard at Stutthof concentration camp, in what is now Poland, from August 1944 to April 1945. He told the court he had heard screams from the gas chambers and watched as corpses were taken to the crematoria. Dey, who says he was not complicit in any murders, apologised to the camp victims and said he had been posted there unwillingly after being considered unfit for combat duty owing to a heart problem. He explained he had tried to get to an army kitchen or bakery after being transferred to the camp as he was trained as a baker’s apprentice,

but was not successful. As a guard, Dey was given the role of watching over prisoner labour crews, but says he never fired his weapon. While there is no evidence of Dey’s direct involvement in a killing, prosecutors argue that as a camp guard he aided in all the killings as a “small wheel in the machinery of murder”. In the indictment, they argue: “The accused was no ardent worshipper of Nazi ideology, but there is also no doubt he never actively challenged the persecutions of the Nazi regime.” Prosecutor Lars Mahnke detailed how Jews were gassed, shot and starved to death as part of the “systematic killing” in the Stutthof camp. Dey, who was 17 when he started serving at Stutthof, is being tried in a juvenile court and faces six months to 10 years in prison if convicted. He told prosecutors his SS comrades talked of the “extermination of the Jews” and said he had “done people wrong” by serving there.

“I did not know why they were there,” he said. “I knew well they were Jews who had committed no crime, that they were only there because they were Jews.” Last week, his lawyer told the court: “He had compassion for them. But he did not see himself in a position to free them.” When Dey compared having to stand naked in front of the camp doctor to prisoners having to do the same thing, presiding judge Anne MeierGoering asked whether this comparison was not a “slap in the face” to the survivors. He revised his comment, adding: “It was certainly different, in any case. One can’t make that comparison.” Prosecutors have successfully convicted former death camp guards using the argument that, by helping to operate camps such as Auschwitz and Sobibor, they were accessories to the murders there. Bruno Dey is charged with accessory to murder

RACIST GRAFFITI DAUBED ON SHOP Model maker apologises Graffiti reading “Dirty Jew” was spray-painted on the storefront of a Judaica store in the French city of Lyon. The store was closed at the time of the attack, while its owners were on holiday in Israel, The Jerusalem Post reported. Neighbours of the store sent photos of the vandalism to the owners, who are considering returning to France early in order to file a complaint with police, the newspaper reported.

A miniature model maker in Madrid has apologised for a resin figurine resembling a Nazi experiment doctor, saying it “deeply regrets” marketing the product. The 35mm doll called Dr. Strudel, which carried a blade and syringe and was clad in breeches, dark leather boots and a visor cap marked with a skull and bones and

a cross, was available online for €12.40 (£10.72). But it was removed on Friday after Jewish News contacted the retailer Scale 75 for comment. Other products on offer include models from different periods, as well as an RAF pilot with a pet bulldog, a German officer and a cigarette-smoking US tanker.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Eyes on Labour lists Just when you thought you’d seen every shocking twist in the Labour antisemitism saga, this week’s events might force you to rethink. With a snap election possibly days away, concerns have emerged about the selection of potential parliamentary candidates for key seats. At least one hopeful previously accused over alleged antisemitic posts appeared on a shortlist, and another appears to have been briefly considered locally for a spot before diligence checks kicked in. The party is already facing claims of skewing selections after the national executive committee was given a greater role in the process for key seats. Labour, for its part, insist there are sufficient checks in place. Given the number of seats that need to be filled and an approach that has too often fallen well short of zero tolerance, it’s little wonder people are asking just how many more potential candidates with worrying histories will emerge? And given events of recent years, will they only be outed if the media intervenes? Trust is in short supply indeed.

Should she succeed in beating off competition from 11 others to become the first woman ever to perform the feat in 2024, she will inspire hundreds of millions of girls around the world. Her habit of attaining goals then setting new ones should serve as an inspiration to everyone.

I find no joy in reading that Luciana Berger could unseat a good friend of Jewish voters in Finchley and Golders Green. Mike Freer has been a staunch supporter of the community and his support of Israel is well documented. Berger has decided to

come to the large Jewish area, rather than find another constituency where she may have less chance to be elected. It seems to be she has gone for the soft option. If I could, I would vote for Mike Freer.

America’s tradition of free speech encourages variety ALEX BRUMMER

CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL

urn on American television these days and it is possible to get two diametrically opposed views of the world. On CNN, there is the constant drumbeat of impeachment for US President Donald Trump, accompanied by purported evidence of huge secret foreign policy in the Ukraine. It is incidentally the only country, other than Israel, where both the President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk are of Jewish origin. Over on Fox News, the Ukraine affair is seen in a different light. All the focus is on Hunter Biden (son of presidential candidate Joe Biden) and his commercial links with Ukraine, now severed, and the hopelessness of the Democratic candidates for the presidency. These sharp differences – not dissimilar in some respects to the UK’s own Brexit wars – are debated across dinner tables everywhere in the US. On the first day of Succot, I was at lunch in the succah of old friends. One, a committed

conservative, acknowledged that Trump was hugely mercurial and nasty, but felt some of his policy achievements were underestimated. These included his tax cuts and his approach to illegal immigration. His spouse fretted about the quality of the Democrat candidates for the nomination and speculated Trump’s approach would exhibit itself as antisemitism were it not for the fact his daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner and beloved grandchildren were practising Jews. They offered a break on Trump’s baser instincts and partly the reason the president delivered on the longstanding US promise to shift its embassy to Israel.

In much the same way as this family and their guests were divided on partisan lines so, it is also true, that American Jewish families are much more ‘pick and choose’ in their Judaism. The husband is committed to the Kesher Israel congregation, in the heart of fashionable Georgetown, Washington D.C., which is the ‘home for home’ for Jewish members of Congress. His spouse embraced a more liberal form of modern Orthodoxy in a different part of town. Their daughter, of whom they are immensely proud, is a Reform rabbi – in a Brooklyn community – where the surnames are often more Irish and Anglo than middle European owing to mixed marriages. The description of the members reminded me of the Life & Styles section of The New York Times. The matches are a sight to behold because of their exotic openness. There is always reference to the success of the bride and groom and often the grandness of the dynasties from which they come. But it is the mixture that fascinates: gay couples (of both genders) married by named rabbis; Lutherans marrying Jews with rabbinical

blessings and strictly-Orthodox weddings side by side. The favourite time, it would seem for New York weddings, is often after Shabbat goes out. The variety of Jewish observance was underlined by another guest in the succah. This eminent public official had spent Yom Kippur in the car park of Washington’s conservative congregation Adas Israel. This, incidentally, was where my own children went to nursery when I was Washington correspondent. The car park had been turned into an auditorium for nearly 3,000 people with a bimah in the middle and some excellent musicians accompanying the cantor and rabbi. Doubtless among less free thinking families, much of this variety of practice would be deplored. It certainly would not go down well in parts of Israel or among the more narrow minded north London communities. But America’s traditions of free speech, exemplified by the CNN/Fox News divide, encourages a more liberal approach to Jewish religious practice without rolling eyes and disdain. Long may the variety live on.

We must pay Kurds our debt of gratitude EDWIN SHUKER

VICE PRESIDENT, BOARD OF DEPUTIES OF BRITISH JEWS

L

ast week, hundreds of Israelis gathered on the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to protest against the attacks on the Kurdish community in northern Syria. One of the organisers, Major Yair Fink, said: “It’s our moral obligation as Jews to help them.” Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu expressed deep concern for the sudden and unfathomable decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw American troops from northern Syria, giving Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the opportunity to massacre and to ethnically cleanse the Kurdish population. Since the Turks launched their attack, hundreds have been killed and more than 160,000 have been forced to flee from their homes, including around 70,000 children. The plight of any community forced to abandon their homes in fear of their lives

deserves our sympathy. But for a large number of Jews and Israelis, it goes much deeper than that. Many of those demonstrating in Israel had personal reasons to be grateful to the Kurds. As a nation, the Kurds are much overlooked – and one can say betrayed – by the international community. A proud and ancient people numbering between 35 and 40 million, the Kurds – like the Jews – were promised their own state at the conclusion of the First World War. Provision for a Kurdish state was made by the victorious allies in the Treaty of Sèvres in 1920, but the Kurds did not achieve independence. Instead, they were cruelly divided into four countries not exactly known for their human rights and democratic values: Turkey Iran, Iraq and Syria. Their history since then

has been a tale of rebellion, bloodshed and suppression. Tradition holds that Israelites from the tribe of Benjamin first arrived in the area after the Assyrian conquest of the Kingdom of Israel during the 8th century BCE and lived harmoniously as an important component of the Kurdish society until the early 1950s. Following the establishment of the state of Israel, and the displacement and departure of the majority of Iraqi Jews to the young state, Kurdish Jews followed suit, not because they had been mistreated, but because they wanted to join their brothers from the four corners of the world. Today there is a large community of almost 200,000 in Israel who live mainly in

IN THE JEWS’ HOUR OF PERIL IN IRAQ, SALVATION CAME FROM THE BRAVE AND NOBLE KURDS IN NORTH IRAQ. I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS ALSO RESCUED

Jerusalem and in agricultural Moshavim across the land. They proudly celebrate their traditions, reminiscing about the land in which their ancestors spent more than 2,600 years. Some have ventured into sightseeing trips of the old country and meeting some of their distant relatives who stayed behind and did not join the big aliyah in 1951. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the persecuted Jewish community of Iraq was denied the right to leave the country and was in essence held hostage. The Ba’ath regime took power in 1968 and immediately launched a campaign of terror and murder against them, including public hangings, kidnappings and disappearance. In their hour of peril, salvation came from the brave and noble Kurds in north Iraq, who facilitated the escape to freedom of 1,900 Jews, risking their own lives in the process. I know this well because I was one of those rescued. As Jews, we cannot keep silent when a peaceful nation is threatened by genocide. When it comes to the Kurds, however, it is more than sympathy; it is hakarat hatov, paying back a debt of gratitude

We found it at Altermans in Finchley, North London. The firm is run by Gabriel Alterman, who is growing a business where lawyers can work on their own or build a small team that meets their needs. The firm is not a “virtual network”. We work together, talk together and respect each other’s expertise. We share fees, reward each other for referrals, and have regular gatherings – both social and work – to make sure we’re on track. Opinion

Gantz must be included in security decisions now JAMES SORENE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, BICOM

T

he Israeli Security Cabinet met early this month for the first time in three months. That is extraordinary when you consider the threat Israel faces from Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran. With enemies like these, you would think it would meet every week. In September, Benjamin Netanyahu had to flee to an air raid shelter during an election campaign event in Ashdod when missiles were fired from Gaza. He came close to launching a major military operation, but was talked down by the Attorney General, who said he had to convene the Security Cabinet to take a formal decision. The electioneering is over, but the mind games of coalition talks have intensified. Netanyahu admitted defeat in his attempt to form a government this week, and the baton passed to Benny Gantz. As Gantz tries to build a coalition, Netanyahu has a surreal home team advantage – he is still running the country because he formed a 61-seat majority government in May 2015.

His government broke up in December 2018, when he called an election. Israel has not had a full-time functioning government for 10 months. Two elections later, Netanyahu has failed twice to form a government. As coalition talks get nowhere slowly, he is still in charge. It is normal for Israelis to wait several weeks for a government to be formed. Israel’s long election campaigns result in a five-month process from an election being called to a government being formed. But never in Israel’s 71-year history has that happened twice in one year. Netanyahu may look like a bed-blocker, but he is entitled to stay in post until a new coalition is agreed. But what is the real impact of not having

ISRAELI POLITICIANS NEED TO ASSESS THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE TURKISH INVASION

a proper government? As Prime Minister, Netanyahu is at the apex of security decisions made after advice from the heads of the Israel Defense Forces, the Mossad and the Shin Bet. He has immense scope to take decisions without scrutiny from other government ministers. This puts the public servants in a very uncomfortable position. According to media reports, Israeli intelligence chiefs were very concerned about Netanyahu’s election promise to annex the Jordan Valley as it was made without proper planning for the destabilising consequences in the West Bank. Secondly, former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, bemoaned the loss of ambiguity about Israeli attacks on Iranian forces in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. His comments were clearly directed at Netanyahu’s public admissions that Israel had carried out recent strikes and Eisenkot feared the consequences if the publicity forced Israel’s enemies to respond. What is the impact of a lost year for Israeli public administration? The two election days are public holidays, so GDP takes a hit. The deficit is increasing, as is the urgency of spending cuts

and tax increases. Infrastructure investment isn’t being agreed. But politicians can’t cook up vanity projects or cash handouts to please their political base. There might even be a net saving. But urgent reforms to improve the education system, transform policing in Arab communities and integrate under-represented groups into the workforce are not being explored. Circling back to that Security Cabinet meeting, military analysts believe the recent Iranian attack on Saudi oil facilities with cruise missiles requires Israel to increase investment in its own counter measures, but only a new government can allocate the funds. In Syria, the Turkish invasion is a win for Assad and his Iranian allies. Israeli politicians need to assess the consequences with their military and security chiefs and take some decisions. Netanyahu and Gantz may or may not end up working together in a grand coalition, but that will take weeks to be decided. The gravity of the situation provides a compelling argument for Netanyahu to widen his circle of trust now and invite Gantz into the room when these important security decisions are being made.

Family marks 200 years of quality carpets

ADVERTORIAL

Brothers Richard and Alan Myers of S & M Myers recall the Georgian origins of their rag recycling company, which today is a retailer of high-end carpets for your home S & M Myers is now located in East End Road, Finchley

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS When Samuel and Morris Myers’s brother, Angel, took out a policy to insure their family business at 5 White Street in London’s East End, he could not have imagined that S & M Myers would still be flourishing in the hands of a seventh generation, 200 years later. It was described on the license as a ‘rag merchant and dealer in old metals’. Its current owners, Richard, 61, and Alan, 56, are five-times great-grandsons of Samuel and Morris. The brothers don’t have much detail about the earliest years of the business, only that Morris and his half-brother Samuel were buying clean and soiled rags, cutting and cleaning them and selling them on for either reprocessing or for cleaning machinery. This carried on until the 1980s, although with only clean rags being bought. Samuel and Morris were situated mainly in Wentworth Street, E1, for more than 150

years. They also owned a pub, the Cross Keys, from the early 1860s to 1881, where they kept animals at the back of the premises. They moved from Wentworth Street to 100-106 Mackenzie Road, N7 (originally a bakery) in 1969. Later they opened their current store in East End Road, East Finchley, in the mid 1990s.

Francine Wolfisz reviews a new history series looking at photographs that changed the world – including the stark image of a terrorist captured at the 1972 Olympic Games Peering over the edge of a balcony, the balaclava-clad terrorist silently stares out at the police and paparazzi gathering below, the world apprehensively awaiting his next move. More than 45 years on, Kurt Strumpf’s haunting photograph from the 1972 Olympic Games still terrifies as much as it shocks – for it was taken during the horrific events of 5 September, when 11 Israeli athletes were targeted by a Palestinian terror group, in return for the release of 234 Arab prisoners and two German founders of a far-left faction. One commentator likens the terrorist’s head to “a skull-like image”, while another describes it as akin to “a horror film, with the dark threat of the unreasoning murderer, a person who has no compunction, no compassion”. Now a new series explores the events behind this and other images that captured history in the making. Photos That Changed The World, which airs on Mondays on the History channel, also features Nick Ut’s image of a Vietnamese girl running away after a napalm attack, Jeff Widener’s picture of a student standing in front of tanks in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, and Ron Edmonds’ photos of an assassination attempt on US President Ronald Reagan. Other episodes include Neil Armstrong’s photograph of his fellow astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, on the surface of the moon, Charles and Diana’s royal wedding balcony kiss and Nelson Mandela’s long walk to freedom. In Munich Massacre, which airs on 4 November, the chilling image of a face-

The helicopters in the aftermath of a failed rescue attempt by German police

less terrorist takes centre stage alongside other striking pictures taken during the Olympics’ darkest moment. Commentator and broadcaster Barry Davies, who was reporting on the Olympics at the time, recalls the initial excitement of a team from Israel taking part. “The President of West Germany, Gustav Heinemann, said the whole idea was to overcome hatred and pave the way for reconciliation. The fact that here was a team of sports men and women from Israel competing on German soil was a huge thing.” Professor and author Kay Schiller adds that “1972 was meant to reverse impressions that 1936 had left behind”. As a way of achieving this, Germany designed an “informal, free” Olympic Games, in which security officers were dressed not in police clothing, but light

blue uniforms and, importantly, were unarmed. It was a decision that would have fatal consequences. Shortly after 4am on 5 September, 1972, eight members of Black September scaled a 6ft fence and stormed the flat where the Israeli athletes were staying. Carrying duffel bags with assault rifles, pistols and grenades, they quickly overpowered the defenceless athletes and killed weightlifter Yossef Romano and wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg. The gunmen then began negotiating for the release of the remaining nine athletes, but Israel’s Prime Minister, Golda Meir, was resolute that no negotiation should take place. “If we [Israel] should give in, then no Israeli anywhere in the world shall feel his life is safe... it’s blackmail of the worst kind,” she said. As the hours dragged on, the world’s

press descended on the Olympic village – and were there to capture the moment 38 German police officers arrived on the scene as part of a rescue operation. Schiller comments: “There was no news blackout. Everyone could watch on the television, including the terrorists, that German policemen dressed in tracksuits were trying to storm the building.” The terrorists realised the world’s media could spread their message about the plight of the Palestinian people and the conflict with Israel – prompting one balaclava-clad gunman to step onto the balcony. It was “a propaganda success” for Black September, adds Schiller. The German authorities feigned an agreement with the terrorists, allowing them to transport the hostages by helicopter to an airfield, before boarding a plane to Cairo. But, tragically, the West German police plan to ambush the terrorists with snipers at the airfield suffered from improper planning and miscommunication. The hostages were all killed, alongside a police officer and five of the eight terrorists. For former Daily Mirror editor, Mike Molloy, the stark black-and-white photograph of the “unreasoning” terrorist is one that captures the entire tragedy without saying a single word. “It’s the horror of the faceless person, the murderer who is going to come and kill you for political reasons. It was a picture that shocked the world.” uPhotos That Changed The World: Munich Massacre airs on 4 November, 10.30pm, on History

Rabbi Twerski points out the prefix of the letter beis usually means “in”, but the Midrash points out it could also mean “for” or “for the sake of”. Looking at it this way, the first verse of the Torah says: “For the sake of the first, the world was created”. Central to the concept of living a Torah life is this idea of a purposeful creation. The universe, everything in the universe, every person, every occurrence, each has its own purpose. As Rabbi Twerski says, “being is not haphazard or meaningless”. We need to achieve something with our existence. Rav Shlomo Wolbe stressed the need for each individual to become conscious of his uniqueness and purpose. To truly understand we possess unique strengths and flaws, and see that each one of us was born into a different family with different circumstances, is to recognize Hashem has placed each of us in this world for our own purpose. Rabbi Twerski speaks of tikun hamidos, of improving and adjusting our personality traits – something that takes selfrestraint and self-discipline, while Rabbi Herman refers to the “mission versus the moment”. Our mission is our purpose, and the moments are those emotions and impulses that try to stop us achieving our missions. Having control during the “moments” means a victory for our “missions.” Wishing us all a very beautiful Shabbat, filled with a sense of purpose and victories for our missions.

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL On a recent visit to Pakistan, Prince William wore a sherwani, the country’s national dress for men. What does the Torah say about wearing national dress? At first glance, it may seem Jews do not have a national dress. Yet the tallit is more than a religious article. It is in fact a desert shawl wrap, and the fringes are there to distinguish the wearer as an observer of the Israelite faith. While the modern custom has not kept up with halachic expectation, women and men are required to affix tzitzit to clothing with four or more corners. The Turban is another article which merits the recital of a daily blessing each morning. The Turban is referred to as “the glory of Israel”. In modern Jewish communities, devout women wear

turbans and other headgear and men now wear the kippah or yarmulke. In fact, the original Jewish dress was in the reverse. In the Talmud, the daughters of Talmudic scholars wore a kippah-style headdress and the men wore turbans. As Jews travelled constantly throughout the last several millennia, Jews have adapted to others’ national dress. If clothing is modest and conforms to the Biblical injunction against twinning wool and linen together, it is permitted to wear.

DAUGHTERS OF TALMUDIC SCHOLARS USED TO WEAR A KIPPAH-STYLE HEADDRESS

Dress from hot countries is usually very modest and healthy, as it allows for the proper circulation of air around the body, eliminating the chance of bacteria gathering and soreness. However, not all modern Jews appreciate the beauty of foreign national dress. One warm summer Friday night, my wife and I wore comfortable cotton Tuareg and cool Indian dress in north Manchester. Our Jewish neighbours turned their heads in embarrassment and did not wish us Shabbat Shalom. I wonder what they would have done to avoid Maimonides and his wife in the street! ◆Rabbi Abel serves Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation and is padre to Merseyside Army Cadet Force

The Bible Says What? ‘We must burn female cows and sprinkle ourselves with their ashes’

Progressively Speaking How can we overcome hatred a year on from the Pittsburgh shootings?

BY RABBI DANNY RICH “And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from a sin.” (Numbers 19: 9) Chapter 19 of Numbers is titled, ‘The Red Heifer’, and deals with the purification from ritual contamination by a corpse through the means of the ashes of a red heifer (a young female cow that has not produced offspring). Even in the catalogue of bizarre ritual we find in our Torah, the purification by the ashes of a red – and it must be red – heifer takes some beating. One is required to take a perfect heifer – one with a uniform coloured skin that has never been yoked or used for work – and burn it with aromatic spices. The ashes are divided into three. One part for storage, one for mixing

with the ashes of the next red heifer, and the final part to be utilised by persons contaminated by contact with a corpse – who are sprinkled with the ashes and fresh water on the third or seventh day of impurity, regaining their purity after a period of isolation. Jews and non-Jews have long been baffled by the process, including students of first century Yochanan ben Zakkai and the 19th century Samson Raphael Hirsch. Hirsch suggests the cow itself represents human ‘animal nature’ and the absence of the yoke hints at the control of such passions. So while this verse is never literally enacted, it show us the human ability to overcome both the contamination, and its parallel ‘animal nature’. It enables a person to face death and yet overcome it by achieving a certain type of immortality.

BY DEBORAH BLAUSTEN As the first yahrzeit of the shootings at Tree of Life – Or l’Simcha draws close, Jews all over the world are once again being encouraged to join the global campaign, #showupforshabbat. In the wake of the attacks, this kind of solidarity and presence provided comfort to The 11 victims of the Pittsburgh shooting grieving congregations around In the year that has followed, the world. The weekend after the shootings, I talked to a member of the Christchurch, Poway and Colombo community who came to synagogue joined Pittsburgh as places whose to offer his support, having read name became synonymous with the brutal hate-filled attacks that about the campaign in a local paper. He said he had known for years the brought destruction and death to synagogue was there, but had never places of prayer and community. Jewish tradition tells us the been inside. Standing with a member of the congregation who lives just churban or destruction of Jerusadoors from him, he said: “I hate that lem’s second temple was caused by baseless hatred. this is what it took for us to meet.” It’s a tragedy that has acted As the anniversary approaches, and with it the encouragement to throughout history as an archetype gather in solidarity, these words have for understanding loss, displacement and rupture, and one that can help us been ringing in my ears.

think about how we respond to the violation of sacred space. Rav Abraham Isaac Kook taught that just as the temple was destroyed on account of baseless hatred, it – and we – can be rebuilt by acts of causeless love. The outpouring of support in response to these atrocities is incredibly important, but to paraphrase our wise synagogue neighbour, it shouldn’t take this for us to meet. The restoration of the sanctity and safety of holy spaces doesn’t just take place on the days that occasion it, but the days in between. May we show up for Shabbat this week, and for coffee the next, knowing strong and connected communities are a powerful antidote to the violent and hateful ideology that seeks to drive us apart. uDeborah Blausten is a rabbinic student at Leo Baeck College

ANNA SCHUCHMAN & CHARLOTTE WIKLER HEALTH & FITNESS

ACELIFESTYLE Dear Anna and Charlotte, My friends and I have started going to the gym to try and build some muscle. We want to get that lean, ripped appearance. What advice can you give? Sam, 16 Dear Sam, Looking “ripped” and getting a six-pack is something many teenage boys aspire to. The

good news is that this is a perfect time for you to start building muscle, so long as you go about it the right way. The two most important components are lifting weights and eating plenty of protein. When it comes to lifting weights, the rule is ‘progressive overload’. This means that you have to keep increasing the weights as you get stronger. But don’t free-style it! Following a programme and learning the proper technique is key to avoiding injury and a Personal Trainer can advise you on this. Boys can grow until they are 21, which means that your growth plates (at either end of your bones) might still be soft. Because of this you have to keep rep range at around eight

to 12 and make sure you never push so hard that any of those reps feel like you are straining. Now is not the time to show off about how much you can lift; the idea is to remain injury free and build up slowly, but surely. It is important to have a big protein re-feed after each workout (like a protein shake) and incorporate at least 30g to 40g of protein per meal (calculate around 2g of protein per kg of your body weight). By eating plenty of protein throughout the day you will reach your ‘leucine threshold’ which will trigger protein synthesis and build muscle. If you need any more advice or want to set up a session with one of our expert trainers then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

DARREN RICH ISRAEL PROPERTY EXPERT

HOME IN ISRAEL REAL ESTATE GROUP Dear Darren I am making Aliyah in the next few months, but I am unsure whether I should buy or rent a property? Denise Dear Denise, This very much depends on your personal circumstances. If you are buying a holiday home and know the area you want to buy in and the funds are in place, then buying is

normally the preferred option. Most people prefer to live in their own home and not take the risk of a landlord deciding to sell the rental apartment, thereby resulting in having to move home and incur expensive moving costs. If you are making Aliyah and are not certain of the area you are considering and wish to try it out for a year or two, it may be advisable to rent in order to become more familiar with the areas around you - and not to end up buying in the wrong area. The disadvantages in paying rent is that it’s very much like throwing money away and may eventually reduce your purchasing budget, due to the general increase in property prices. At the same time, a decrease

in the Sterling may make it impossible to eventually buy. A popular option when making Aliyah is to rent a furnished apartment for six months and within a short period it becomes clear if the area suits your needs in terms of location, facilities and community. At that point, you can look to buy a home. If you are making Aliyah with children, it is important to visit the area numerous times and speak to as many people as possible from the area to find out about schools. This way children don’t need to move home on a regular basis, leaving recentlymade friends behind. If finances allow you to purchase, it is always the advisable option, as prices in Israel will only generally increase.

In a conflicted society of promiscuity and puritanical law, this new production unveils a shadowy world of repression and dubious morals, which feels astonishingly urgent today.
