Williamson barred by Labour Chris Williamson has been barred from standing for Labour in December’s election after his suspension from the party over the antisemitism row, writes Mathilde Frot. Labour’s ruling body decided on Wednesday not to endorse Williamson (pictured, below) for the seat that will be contested by an official Labour candidate. According to the party’s rule book, suspended members are not eligible to stand as Labour candidates. The decision comes amid mounting scrutiny into alleged antisemitism in the party ahead of the election, with former PM Tony Blair claiming this week that the row was “killing” Labour. Joining the chorus of criticism, Conservative chairman James Cleverly said in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph that “Jewish friends” of his are set to leave the country in the event of a Labour victory. Meanwhile, a ruling from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission into the allegations is expected to come as early as January. Jewish groups reacted to the Williamson decision, with Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl leading calls for Williamson’s full expulsion. She said: “The ruling to bar Chris Williamson MP from standing again in Derby North is the correct one. However this is not enough. “Labour’s leadership must now stop dragging their feet and act immediately to expel from the party this disgraced politician who has baited the Jewish community.” Similarly, the Jewish

Labour Movement accused Williamson of being “a Jew baiter who has sided with a host of antisemites.” A spokesperson for the group added: “This does not mean Labour’s vetting system is fit for purpose. There are several National Executive Committee endorsed Labour Party candidates who have serious failings on antisemitism and the party has turned a blind eye. “Once again, Labour only takes action against racists when they become a political liability.” A spokesperson for the Jewish Leadership Council added: “Good riddance. A couple of years too late.” The decision comes after Williamson lost his High Court bid to overturn his suspension last month after raising more than £60,000 for his legal challenge. He was first suspended in February after footage emerged of him telling Momentum activists that Labour’s handling of antisemitism claims had led it to be “demonised”. He also accused the party of being “too apologetic” in the face of criticism of its handling of complaints. Williamson was also filmed saying he had celebrated the resignation of Joan Ryan, who quit Labour in protest over the row and bullying complaints. He was readmitted with a formal warning in June and suspended again days later after a second panel reviewed the decision to reinstate him. Continued on page 2

Swinson: We will never help Corbyn Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson insisted yesterday that a vote for her party would not help put Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn into No 10, writes Mathilde Frot. Swinson was speaking as she launched the party’s battle bus tour in Finchley and Golders Green, a sign the seat could prove crucial ahead of next month’s general election. Swinson was joined by local candidate Luciana Berger as she visited the Head Room cafe where she sat down with Laurie Rackind, the chief executive of mental health charity Jami. Unveiling plans to invest £11b into mental health provision, Swinson told Jewish News: “Today as we are in this amazing Jewish mental health charity, the importance of making sure that mental health provision is properly resourced is right up there in terms of our priorities because it touches everybody’s lives.” “Currently the provision is woefully inadequate, and we’ve got a plan to change that,” she said.

The Board of Deputies has accused shadow home secretary Diane Abbott of “minimising” antisemitism during an interview on Radio 4. Speaking to Justin Webb, Abbott was sharply challenged on the row over antisemitism. “Does it reflect an arrogance of the Labour Party that in the way that he [Jacob Rees Mogg] didn’t listen to the [Grenfell] victims, you don’t listen to the victims of antisemitism?” Webb asked. “You continue to insist the Labour Party has done “everything we can”; except every spokesperson for the Jewish community says

you haven’t done enough”, he added. “You’ve not had an independent inquiry, you don’t listen to them, you don’t care what they think, because there’s not enough of them to matter.” Abbott replied: “I couldn’t say that. One of the biggest voting blocs in Hackney is in Stamford Hill which is a very vibrant and large Jewish community. I’ve spoken to them about this.” Asked whether she accepts the party hasn’t done enough, she said: “Not every element of the Jewish community believes Jeremy is an antisemite.”

Nardell to stand A leading lawyer who acted as an independent QC for the Labour Party over antisemitism cases has been chosen as a candidate for the election. The Jewish Labour Movement criticised Gordon Nardell’s selection as Labour’s hopeful for the Westminster constituency, as being “rewarded for presiding over a flawed disciplinary process” for tackling Jew-hate. The Jewish barrister was appointed as the party’s first in-house counsel in 2018, tasked with getting on top of antisemitism cases. By July, he decided to leave the post and return to private practice. The seat is held by the Conservatives.

Hampstead and Kilburn constituency is home to 78,500 voters — threequarters of whom are firm Remainers in the battle of Brexit. And its sitting MP, Labour’s Tulip Siddiq, has pledged to continue that fight to stay inside the European Union (EU), while she runs again for what she affectionately calls “the oddball seat”. But despite the fact she has a 15,000 majority, both her opponents – Matt Sanders for the Liberal Democrats and Johnny Luk for the Conservatives – are confident they have more than a sporting chance to unseat her. Both men are buoyed by the fractious relationship between the Jewish community and the Labour Party, and Sanders, in particular, believes there is a following wind that could sweep the Lib Dems into power. Sanders and his canvassing team are decked out not in familiar yellow Lib Dem colours, but instead wear huge EU badges, as his calling card, and that of his party’s leader Jo Swinson, is a pledge to overturn Article 50 if they achieve power. And the Lib Dem candidate,

a former special adviser to ex-Lib Dem leader Sir Nick Clegg during the party’s coalition with the Conservatives, says his seven years as a councillor in Camden’s Haverstock ward means he has a close relationship with the area’s Jewish community. “There is definitely all to play for”, says Sanders. “There is a huge Jewish community here who finds itself not able to vote Labour. I don’t take joy from that. It’s extremely sad there’s a political party which has got itself to a place where huge numbers of people feel unable to vote for it because of their religion. “It’s inexcusable in modern Britain to have a party that has behaved in that way on racism. My absolute pledge to the Jewish community is that I will fight for your rights, whatever happens. I will stamp on and criticise and condemn antisemitism wherever I see it; that is fundamental to who I am.” Such questions about antisemitism, suggests Sanders, getting in an early swipe against Labour, are not just national but local. “It is not something Camden Labour can shrug off and say it’s nothing to do with us”, he insists. “On the doorstep, the issue of antisemitism comes up all the time,

unprompted,” he adds. “I’m not saying we as Liberal Democrats haven’t had our own problems with antisemitism, but we have taken swift action – perhaps not as swift as we should have done – and I think what’s happening in Labour now is a wake-up call to all progressive people everywhere, that if you give antisemitism an inch, it takes hold and it festers. We have to deal with it quickly and decisively, and you should judge a party by the action it takes.”

Meanwhile, Luk, a 29-year-old British-Chinese entrepreneur who is the Conservatives’ choice to fight the Hampstead and Kilburn seat, is just as confident that he can oust Siddiq. The Tories came second in the 2017 election and Luk, although he voted and campaigned for Remain, now says he is working on “how to make the best of Brexit”. He says he has a “can-do” spirit and that such an ethos comes through on the doorsteps of

the constituency. Luk describes himself as “socially liberal” in the David Cameron mould, and speaks warmly of a visit he paid to Tel Aviv last year to support a BritishChinese friend in her conversion to Judaism and marriage. “I got a really good taste of the incredibly inclusive culture in Israel,” he says, skating over the fact his friend needed to convert in order to participate in Israeli society.

Nevertheless, Luk suggests there is kinship and understanding between himself as “someone who has been the focus of harassment and fear, and the feeling of not being welcome in one’s own community”, and the Jewish voters of Hampstead and Kilburn. “It’s very sad”, says Luk, “that we still have to have this conversation [about antisemitism] in 2019”. He acknowledges that standing

for Parliament is “extremely tough. I was not expecting the emotional and mental draining – I have even had a few death threats, from people who have never met me. But that just makes me more determined.” Siddiq, who increased her majority from 1,138 votes in 2015 to 15,560 in 2017, says she is “never complacent about taking votes for granted. This is not my seat for life”.

Conservative Johnny Luk is confident he has the backing to unseat Siddiq

Siddiq, who was brought up Muslim and is married to a Christian, sends her daughter to a Jewish nursery because, she says: “I wanted her to grow up the same way I did, in the heart of the Jewish community.” Unlike Sanders and Luk, Siddiq grew up in the constituency and has warm friendships across the Jewish community. At the invitation of JW3, she now holds her advice surgeries in

the centre, and is on good terms with the security patrol at the building. The offer was made, she says, in the wake of the murder of MP Jo Cox. She is a staunch Remainer and, indeed, lost a job in the Shadow Cabinet because of her vote against triggering Article 50. Siddiq was one of the MPs who originally nominated Jeremy Corbyn for leadership of the Labour Party,

although she later backed Andy Burnham. Siddiq, who is vice-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism, and a trustee of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, says Corbyn takes her calls and that she has played a big part behind the scenes. Asked about the decision of Luciana Berger to leave the Labour Party, Siddiq says she has “huge respect” for her ex-colleague, but is “disappointed” Berger joined the Lib Dems, because, she says, “in my opinion [they] have done enormous damage to working people in the community. They have been outrageous on policies, and they don’t get as much scrutiny as Labour and the Conservatives”. Siddiq has been a trenchant critic of Israel’s policies towards Gaza, but says: “I share the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM)’s belief that it is perfectly possible to criticise the Israeli government fairly, while being robust in the fight against antisemitism.”

Natan Sharansky was the A-lister at BAFTA in Piccadilly on Tuesday night as a packed house watched the London premiere of a documentary film about the Soviet refusenik – then heard him recall his struggle, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The screening of From Slavery to Freedom – the Refusenik Story was hosted by Mikhail Fridman and the Genesis Philanthropy Group (GPG), ahead of the film’s showing at the Jewish film festival in London. A GPG co-founder and trustee, Friedman said he said heard of Sharansky – then known as Anatoliy Sharansky – when he was 13 years old, and described the diminutive freedom fighter as “a true Jewish hero”. Landmark moment for contemporary Talmud A publisher in Jerusalem has celebrated the completion of a new 42-volume Talmud in honour of a British-Jewish couple at a special event at Finchley United Synagogue. Koren Publishers, together with The Steinsaltz Center, hosted a tribute event this week in honour of Leo and Sue Noé to celebrate the completion of The Noé Edition Koren Talmud Bavli. Publication began in May 2011, with volumes released according to the international Daf Yomi (daily Talmud learning) schedule, and The Noé Edition Koren Talmud Bavli now takes its place as the newest edition of Talmud in the world. The project was overseen by Rabbi Dr Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, a renowned Torah scholar and clinical psychologist, with commentary by Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz, a leading Talmud scholar. Among those celebrating were former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, Dayan Ivan Binstock, and Rebbetzin Lauren Levin, as well as the head of the European Beth Din, Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu, and United

Dozens of young volunteers from a Jewish informal education network spent Sunday helping homeless people. Thirty young professionals from Aish UK prepped survival packs, including a sleeping bag, thermal clothing, coats, first aid kits, hygiene essentials and food from items donated from Borehamwood-based Goods for Good. The Help the Homeless campaign group split into four teams, each covering an area of central London and within two hours, all packs had been distributed. During the exercise, the volunteers heard the personal life stories of how people had ended up on the streets. One

Diaries revealed of Nazi-partying Tory The diaries of a Tory MP who died in the 1950s after writing about how he partied with the Nazis are to be published in full. Sir Henry ‘Chips’ Channon’s diaries were part-published 52 years ago, nine years after his death, but were heavily redacted to save the blushes of senior Britons who were still alive at the time. Channon attended parties with members of the Nazi high command, including Heinrich Himmler, Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Göring, and his full memoirs are likely to reveal who joined him. Publishers Hutchinson said the diaries include a visit to Göring’s house during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but of most interest to historians will be Channon’s close relationship with Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII, who abdicated in 1936.

Hutchinson will publish the “elegant, gossipy and bitchy” diaries of the MP and socialite, calling them “a major document of 20th-century British history”. The first volume covering 1918 to 1938 will be published in hardback, e-book and audio next September, and edited by historian Simon Heffer. A further two volumes will be released in 2021 and 2022. Heffer said Channon, who wrote about his dealings with Churchill, was “an appeaser” who clearly did not like the Germans and who saw them as a threat.

The funeral has been held for former JFS student Daniel Mervis from Finchley, after the university undergraduate died last week. Daniel, a bodybuilder and weighlifter who was a member of Finchley United Synagogue, went missing several days before his body was found. The 24-year-old had been studying physics at University College London. A vegan who listed himself as a personal trainer, Daniel was warmly described by his parents Hilton and Vivienne as “gentle and kind”. Daniel was buried at Bushey New Cemetery in north London on Sunday.

More than 130,000 Jews of Sephardic heritage applied for Spanish citizenship under a 2015 law giving the right to naturalisation to descendants of Sephardic Jews. The application window for the Spanish law of return expired at the end of September. More than half of the applications were filed last month, some from the UK but most from Latin American countries. Under the law, descendants of Sephardic Jews may become citizens if their application is approved for lineage by the umbrella group of Spanish Jewish communities and the Justice Ministry. As of the beginning of September, Spain had naturalised at least 8,300 applicants under the law.

He added: “It needs voices to speak out and to be quite clear that this is not something which Israel wishes; any country would like to live within its own borders, become prosperous and seek peace, but if there are others still committed, as there are, to the eradication of the Israeli state, then Israel has no alternative but to provide for its own defence.” Dannatt also revealed for the first time that the co-operation between the two countries extended to Israel supporting British operations in Iraq with the provision of anti-mortar and missile technology, a predecessor of the Iron Dome. Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev recalled that 31 October marked the anniversary of the 1917 taking of Beersheva by British forces commanded by General Allenby. He said the battle against Turkish forces, and the help given to Britain by a well-connected Jewish spy network, had laid the foundation for co-operation between Israel and British defence that “is still growing today”.

Council will not decide fate of planned Shoah memorial A planning decision on the proposed new Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre next to Parliament has been taken out of Westminster Council’s hands, writes Adam Decker. ISRAELI EMBASSY STAFF END STRIKE Israel’s embassy staff around the world called off their two-day strike last Friday, after officials in Jerusalem moved towards resolving a funding row. The Israeli embassy and consulate in Kensington, London, closed last Wednesday after Israeli diplomatic staff around the world went on strike, but it had reopened again by Friday morning, with a Facebook notice saying things had been “temporarily resolved”. Signs reading “Strike” in English and in Hebrew had been plastered across the locked embassy gates and as a notice appeared on its Facebook page saying nothing would open until the strike ended. Staff only responded to emergencies. The Foreign Ministry accused the Finance Ministry of reneging on promises.

Welby calls for hate speech crackdown The Archbishop of Canterbury joined Jewish and non-Jewish peers this week in calling on the government to put pressure on universities to ensure free speech and adopt a new definition of antisemitism. While universities are autonomous, Archbishop Justin Welby told ministers that simply asking the institutions to crack down over reports of “no-platforming, intimidation and lack of free speech” was not working. Welby, who is president of the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ), suggested that “pressure be applied” but government spokeswoman Baroness Berridge said the House of Lords had voted for universities’ independence, meaning the government could issue “guidance only”. She added that the government “strongly encourages” all higher education institutions to adopt the International

Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which has been criticised in some quarters. Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) vicechair, Lord Leigh of Hurley, said: “It is very disappointing that only five institutions have agreed to adopt the IHRA definition.” He added that the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) had recently introduced guidelines on freedom of expression, “requiring universities to have a particular code”, arguing that “if the universities adopted the IHRA definition, that would satisfy the requirements”. Lord Palmer of Childs Hill, a Jewish Lib Dem peer, said Jewish students at Bristol “have been dismayed by the lack of response from their institution following a lecturer using slides to teach sociology students conspiracy theories about mainstream Jewish groups, such as the CST

Jewish leaders have welcomed calls for the government to end its two-child cap on welfare payments, after Boris Johnson’s election pledge. It follows a report by the Work and Pensions Select Committee, published this week, which said “no government should be willing to accept” the consequences of a two-child limit. Board of Deputies’ chief executive Gillian Merron said: “Having witnessed the hardship it has created, [we] are glad to see it recognised.” From 6 April 2017, any children born subsequent to a couple’s first two children are not entitled to the “child element”

of tax credits or Universal Credit, worth £2,780 a year. Last month, the Committee heard from faith groups including the Interlink Foundation, which represents Britain’s Orthodox Jewish community, noting “the disproportionate impact the policy can have on some communities”. About 52 percent of Jewish families in the UK have three or more children, compared with 31 percent of families nationwide who have more than two. Interlink Foundation’s Chaya Spitz said: “There is a clear correlation between the level of observance in the orthodoxy of a family and the number of children they have.”

Toksvig reveals family heroics Writer and broadcaster Sandi Toksvig has told how her family helped save Jews in Denmark during the Nazi occupation in the Second World War. The QI quiz show presenter, 61, who also co-presents Great British Bake Off, revealed her grandparents’ bravery in 1943 as they hid Jews aiming for safety in Sweden. “In the autumn of 1943, word was leaked that the Jews of Den-

mark were to be deported to concentration camps,” she wrote in the weekend’s edition of Guardian Books. “On 29 September the Danish Jews were warned by the Chief Rabbi of Denmark to go into hiding.” She said her journalist grandfather, who she called Farfar (meaning ‘father’s father’ in Danish) “built a false wall in the apartment and painted it to look like the end of their sitting room… Behind this

byword for passion, dedication and love for the people of Israel.” Another memorial event will take place this month at the Emirates Stadium, as Kerner was an avowed Arsenal fan.

FREUD’S LETTER UP FOR SALE A handwritten letter by Sigmund Freud, which shows a rare sentimental side to the 20th century thinker as well as insight into the life of a prominent Jewish refugee amid the advance of the Nazis, is set to go on sale in Jerusalem. The letter, written in German and dated 21 June 1938, several weeks after Freud fled the Nazis in his native Austria and moved to London, was sent to philanthropist Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein, a friend and patient from back home. In it, he sympathised with

her over a personal tragedy. Joel Whitebook, director of the psychoanalytic studies programme at New York’s Columbia University, said: “People often portray Freud as this cerebral, intellectual guy. But he was very, very sensitive to his environment.” The letter was bought by an Israeli collector at auction and will be resold in Jerusalem on 3 December, with bidding to start at around £4,600.

Story of pilot who brought over ‘The Boys’ revealed The family of an RAF pilot who flew child survivors of the Nazis to England only found out what he’d done after seeing archive footage, writes Mathilde Frot RAF pilot H a l s e y Roscorla, who died aged 47 in 1966, helped fly to England orphaned survivors of Nazi concentration camps in the summer of 1945.

Among the children on the plane was Holocaust survivor Arek Hersh, who said he hopes to thank Roscorla’s family in person. “I remember that journey well. There were about 30 of us sitting on the floor in the plane and the pilots came and gave us some bread and chocolate,” he said. “They were ever so nice to us. I shall never forget what they did for us. We wouldn’t be here today without them. They freed Europe and brought us out to safety. I would love to see the photos and meet the family to say thank you personally,” he added. But Roscorla, who worked as an office manager after the war, neither spoke of his days in the millitary nor told his family he had witnessed the historic day. It was not until after his death and a chance sighting of archival footage broadcast 60 years later that Roscorla’s family pieced together what had happened. “We knew he’d been a pilot and there were photographs in our photograph drawer at home,” his son Charles told Jewish News.

He recalled: “We’d look through them and never asked any questions. Suddenly in 2005, my wife Martine and I were watching BBC News and it’s the 60th anniversary of the boys being brought to this country. It was such a shock. These pictures were being brought to life.” The 68-year-old from Kingston, whose mother Joan lives at the care home Royal Star & Garter, urged people to listen to relatives’ firsthand accounts. “Do it now, because there will be a time when you will regret it if you don’t,” he said. Karen Pollock of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: “If it weren’t for him [Roscorla], and all those who supported the efforts to bring 732 young survivors to the UK 74 years ago, these survivors could have had a different future.”

Greek survivors and rescuer are reunited Two Holocaust survivors who live in Israel and the Greek woman who, with her sisters, rescued them met again for the first time since the war . Siblings Sarah Yanai (née Mordechai) of Ramat Hasharon and Yossi Mor (previously Mordechai) of Beersheba were reunited with one of their rescuers, Melpomeni Dina (née Gianopoulou), thanks to the US-based Jewish Foundation for the Righteous. The survivors, who were born in Veria, near Thessaloniki, Greece, were joined by nearly 40 of their descendants at Yad Vashem Holocaust remembrance centre. Dina and her two young sisters, and members of the Axiopoulos family, hid and provided food for six members of the Mordechai family – Miriam and her five children, including Yanai and Mor – during the Second World War. When the Mordechais’ first hiding place was compromised, the Gianopoulou sisters hid them in their home and later helped the family flee to the Vermio mountains but continued to provide food for them until the end of the war.

Your starter for 10 The election campaign is underway. Brexit will decide who sits as MPs after 12 December, but how Britain leaves the EU is not the only issue in town. That age-old hatred stubbornly refuses to be pushed back on the news pages. We’ve had Andrew Marr confronting Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell with the front cover of last week’s Jewish News, warning of a Corbyn premiership. We’ve had a Conservative candidate in Portsmouth welcoming a UKIP-er who sent swastikas online. We’ve had a Lib Dem candidate who called Israeli leaders “psychopaths” and a Labour hopeful who wished Netanyahu dead. Meanwhile, faced with the prospect of life under a rabidly anti-Israel UK government – one that would no doubt curb bilateral relations with the Jewish state and, heaven knows, even publicly sympathise with Hezbollah and Hamas – tensions are running high among British Jews. It’s got so existential that last week one rabbi, Jonathan Romain, took the unprecedented decision to write to his congregation beseeching them not to vote Labour as a “Corbyn government would pose a danger to Jewish life as we know it”. Elsewhere, the Jewish Labour Movement has taken the extraordinary step of refusing to campaign for its own party and Luciana Berger, the admired Jewish MP hounded out of the Labour Party earlier this year, is being chastised by some for standing as a Liberal Democrat against a Conservative ally of the community. Many would prefer Berger to fight Labour rather than a loyal friend. In a zero-sum-game election, every vote snatched from the Conservatives unquestionably makes Corbyn’s task easier. The Labour leader’s lustre seems reassuringly dulled compared to the 2017 election and his party’s Brexit approach remains bafflingly unclear. But much will change in the weeks before polling day. The stakes and the consequences could hardly be higher.

Electing Luciana will not help bring Corbyn to power. Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson has categorically and consistently ruled out ever letting Corbyn into Downing Street. She cites antisemitism within the Labour Party as the key reason. Luciana has earned our trust and our support.

Cast out antisemites at the polling station LORD JOHN MANN

GOVERNMENT’S INDEPENDENT ADVISER ON ANTISEMITISM

he Jewish community is spread across nearly every single parliamentary constituency in the UK. Since its readmission to this country some 360 years ago, the community has built a strong and proud record of engagement with public and civic life. British Jews are simply citizens, rightly and properly active in our participatory democracy. However, Jews are disproportionately targeted in turbulent political times, and against the current backdrop in Britain, antisemitism is rising. Jews feature in the conspiracies and lies drawn on by populists as part of their us versus them talk. To that end, the Jewish community has a responsibility, as we all do, to shun, to protest and to cast out antisemites. The best way to do that is at the ballot box. You must ensure you are registered to vote.

Antisemitism has, regrettably, been a feature of political debate and discussion over the last parliamentary term. There have been numerous shocking revelations of public figures positing or parroting age-old racist, anti-Jewish tropes. Racists should not have a free pass in Britain. Those standing for office, whatever their political party, whether they be an existing Member of Parliament or a new candidate, must be held to account for their views, words, and actions. Critically, there must be consequences for antisemites.

The next General Election will take place on 12 December. Despite Britain being the best country in the world, our weather can sometimes be patchy. If you are voting after work, it may be cold and dark. There might be snow inhibiting elderly readers or relatives from getting out. There could be rain deterring you from venturing outdoors. Perhaps you have an early holiday planned. For all these reasons and numerous others you may want to consider a proxy or a postal vote. Are you a student or do you have a son, daughter or another young relative in higher education? If so, they have the potential to vote at home or, sometimes more importantly, away. They should make the decision about where their vote is likely to have the most impact. Will there be consequences for someone who has espoused antisemitic bile if they vote in their university constituency? If you want to direct your candidates to some educational material, the Antisemitism Policy Trust has an educational resource at

www.antisemitism.org.uk and registration can take place through the government website www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. You must be registered to vote by 26 November. Encourage your friends, neighbours, colleagues and anyone else to register. Whatever your party, however you vote, make antisemites pay the price for their decision to seek public office. Participation is crucial, together we can ensure anti-Jewish racists, and their cheerleaders, know there are consequences for being an antisemite.

exist comments, inappropriate body language and the mildmannered groping many of us have endured over the years now begins to be looked upon almost nostalgically when we bear witness to the new levels of abuse bestowed today. With a record number of female MPs stepping down at this election and the vitriolic misogynistic trolling we see on both social media and even in print – see Rod Liddle’s recent comments in the Spectator as one of many examples – abuse against women in the public eye has never been of more concern. Not only vile, it is prolific and without question focused on women. Whenever I’ve spoken on a controversial issue – including in the pages of this newspaper – I’ve received abuse. Unlike the message my male colleagues receive on social media, which are focussed on the argument itself, the comments I receive are almost always about my looks and graphic descriptions of sex. I’ve had these tweeted to me, emailed to me and posted on forums. Almost every female rabbi and faith

leader I’ve spoken to has experienced the same thing – being told they are ugly or enduring repulsive sexual comments for having the temerity to offer an opinion. A colleague of mine, a woman rabbi in another part of the world, is collecting outrageous comments said to them, with a plan to engage male colleagues. It follows a video made by United Methodist Pastors which saw male clergy reading out the misogynist abuse that their women colleagues had experienced. What is fascinating about this exercise is that it takes a man to say the words that have become common place for his female counterparts to hear – words that for many of us have lost the power to shock – for the daily abuse women experience to become apparent to men. In a recent survey by the APPG, it was demonstrated that misogyny and antisemitism can be linked and that the language used in the abuse is particularly venomous as it combines hatred of women and Jews. Thanks to Stella Creasy MP, Rabbi Tanya Sakhnovich and Citizens UK, misogyny is finally being reviewed by the law commission as a hate crime. However, that should serve to emphasise why we need to have intersectional hate crime recognised as well. I fully endorse the tremendous efforts of

WOMEN ENDURE SEXUAL SLURS FOR HAVING THE TEMERITY TO OFFER A VIEW women, particularly MPs, who are putting themselves in the firing line in order to draw attention to this double sided abuse and hatred. I want the personal risk that they draw to be acknowledged and I want, of course, all of us to think how we can help and support them. But it is not nearly enough. We need to ask why was it not until male Methodist pastors voiced the words of abuse that their colleagues endured daily that it became real for them. Why are my female colleagues seeking to ask their male counterparts to do the same? It is possible that we have, through complacency towards misogynist language and casual sexism, created the space in which hatred has been allowed to grow unchecked? Almost paradoxically one can also argue that the #MeToo movement’s highlighting of the

abuse of women and advocating for change, has placed women on a podium and inadvertently added to their abuse. I have heard it a thousand times: we – as women – have more opportunities and more equality than we have ever had. I know it, I’m a woman rabbi, an opportunity that was not there for Liberal Judaism’s founder Lily Montagu. Yet steps towards equality come at a price and with experiences that our male colleagues do not endure. We need to ask the question – is what you are saying or overhearing really appropriate? We all need to challenge misogyny in the same way I hope you would with antisemitism or racism of any sort. There are many Jewish women out there with important things to say, who need to and should, take up space and be heard. They themselves are showing new methods of leadership which provide a space for each and every person to speak, contribute, be recognised and heard. Do not talk for them. Do not reduce the space they take up or try to reduce their risk by deflection. Instead you should recognise that there are deep seated issues of misogyny in every community, and commit to examining and addressing the root causes of the threat that these women are considered to present… and sometimes you have to start at home.

Election will test UK’s reputation for tolerance ALEX BRUMMER

ormally I avoid discussing the content of newspaper editorial conferences. This is internal stuff and the views of those present are expressed privately, passionately and with the understanding that what is said is not more generally shared. In my several decades in journalism for the Guardian and for last couple decades the Daily Mail I have never encountered a leader conference – until the last few days – where the dominant subject was antisemitism. Then again, Britain is not a country where extremist views have ever had much currency. The late historian David Cesarani, discussing antisemitism and extremism in British politics, once explained at a meeting at which I was present that he was not fearful of fascism or antisemitism in Britain. The history of such parties in the UK, even when Sir Oswald Mosely and his black shirts

were regarded with fear in 1930s, was that in nationwide elections they have always polled badly. In recent times extremists may have attached themselves to UKIP or the Brexit Party but, essentially, this have been one issue movements propagating the UK’s departure from the European and not much else. What is different about this election is that a mainstream party Labour is now broadly associated with antisemitism. The question debated in our office was a complicated one. It is now widely accepted that

Jeremy Corbyn has allowed a toxic anti-Zionist agenda, bleeding into antisemitism culture, to bleed into the sinews of Labour. Indeed, it is the first major party to find itself the subject of a full grown inquiry by the Equality & Human Rights Commission. Needless, to say everyone in the room found this deeply disturbing. But in practical terms, how would it play out in the election results? The evidence suggests there are only a couple of constituencies in the country where the ‘Jewish vote’ could be decisive. Overall British voters would abhor extremism as they have always done. The exception might be in many constituencies where there are large Muslim minorities who have been recipients over many years of strong anti-Israel messages. In these areas the association of Labour with potentially anti-Jewish views might well help Corbyn roll his bandwagon. The antisemitism issue was thrust into the limelight by Rabbi Jonathan Romain’s powerful letter to his synagogue members urging voting

choices other than Labour. Whether rabbis should be advising people how not to vote is an open question. In shul this last weekend, for a family simcha, I heard a rabbi say he was happy to debate social and moral issues, in relation to the election, but would not be making any voting recommendations. For many liberal-minded British Jews this will be an election like no other. Many will feel disenfranchised by Labour, alienated by Boris Johnson’s reputation for moral failings so driven into the hands of the Lib Dems, Greens and other secondary parties. Both the Lib Dems and Greens have had their problems on Middle East issues but will be seen by many as an escape route from the two biggest parties. It is not surprising that this winter election, of all recent such contests, is the one most likely to test the reputation of the UK for tolerance. It will lead some Jews to seriously question whether a Corbyn ruled Britain could ever feel a comfortable place to live.

This ‘everyone’s complicit’ line doesn’t help anyone JENNI FRAZER

here is a great deal of discussion now, both in social media and the public prints, about that now tired term, “complicit”. It’s mainly applied to Labour MPs, who have for a long time been supportive of the Jewish community in its seemingly neverending fight against antisemitism in the Labour Party. At the 2017 election, it could just about be argued, candidates on the doorsteps of Britain were asking for a personal vote, not a vote for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. As we approach this deeply unpopular 2019 election, in which everyone ought to be a loser, we might consider that too many horrible things have happened to make that a viable proposition. Too many people have been driven out of Labour by the twin evils of antisemitism and misogyny. There are too many cases such as Chris Williamson, in and out of Labour like a revolving door; too many disgraceful attacks

on the Labour whistleblowers who appeared in Panorama; and, most importantly, that the Equalities and Human Rights Commission is about to release its report — sadly, not until after the election — investigating whether Labour is an institutionally antisemitic party. I’m beginning to see the attacks escalate on people of goodwill. From verbal jeers — such as those directed at MP Lucy Powell when she spoke at an Enough is Enough rally in Manchester, so that she was forced to stop and protest that “I’m on your side” — to pretty full-on nasty tweets on social media. People like Wes Streeting, Yvette Cooper, Stella Creasy, Rosie Duffield, are being attacked for their messages of support. They are “mealy-mouthed”, apparently; they are “careerists” or “carpetbaggers”. They are now being told, stop with your “fake” tears, your sympathetic tweets. What are you actually going to do? I have to say that I find this kind of behaviour utterly pointless and, indeed, counterproductive.

Why alienate the few friends we have? What is the point of metaphorically yelling at people, many of whom have really stuck their necks out for the Jewish community, because they have the temerity to want to continue in politics? I certainly don’t agree with those who continue to ask for a vote for a Labour Party headed by Jeremy Corbyn. But I also wonder at the split attitude of those who are attacking the Streetings and Duffields of this world — but cheering on tough Jewish women such as Margaret Hodge and Ruth Smeeth, who have chosen to stay inside Labour and fight. In any case, it’s not such an easy ask, this “what are you going to do?” Like it or not, antisemitism is not always going to be front and centre of even the most sympathetic politician’s mind, and a mass resignation is not only unlikely but unrealistic. How would we feel if asked to give up our entire career and livelihoods? Besides, there is another factor: I don’t want to see a Labour Party totally devoid of

people who are ready to speak up for us. And that’s what we are getting if we continue with this “everyone is complicit” line. So this is just what I already feel is a hopeless plea, to ask those people attacking political allies to give it a rest. We need all the friends we can get.

United Synagogue organised its largest trip to Poland, with nearly 100 Y12 students exploring Polish Jewish life. The group visited the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery and remains of the ghetto as well as Majdanek concentration camp and Auschwitz-Birkenau before marking Shabbat in Krakow in the 16th century Remah Shul. Talia Dimson, 16, said: “The trip was so engaging with such personal stories and told in such a captivating way. I will never forget it.”

Children at Jewish Care’s Redbridge Jewish Community Centre embarked on an educational journey through China, the US, Australia, Israel and Greece. Young explorers gathered at the Ilford community centre in half term to learn about countries around the world through international-themed activities, including designing their own passport.

Daniel Bernard, 25, of the Liberal Synagogue Elstree, has autism and learning difficulties and was put up for the award by Watford MP Richard Harrington, who said his “remarkable achievement is a true inspiration to young people in our area and across the country, particularly those like him who have a learning disability”. He won gold in basketball at the March 2019 Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi.

Meet the real winners of Deborah Cicurel speaks to the inspirational Shalva Band, made up of Israeli musicians with disabilities, ahead of their show in London

etta, Dana International and Madonna would have been enough to impress 200 million viewers across the world, but there was another reason everyone was talking about Israel after the 64th Eurovision Song Contest – and their name is Shalva Band. Comprising eight musicians with special needs, including two lead singers who are blind, and percussionists with Down’s syndrome, the band had previously stormed to victory in The Rising Star – Israel’s equivalent of Britain’s Got Talent – to represent their country at Eurovision. As the finals approached, they decided to pull out owing to rehearsals taking place on Shabbat, but were invited back

as guest artists at the semifinals, with their rendition of Pink’s A Million Dreams sending the crowd wild. Their performance soon went viral and the band was hailed on social media as the “real winner” of Eurovision. Shalva Band is now set to perform this month for a UK audience, taking to the stage at the newly-renovated South Hampstead United Synagogue. Since performing at Eurovision, the band has flown across the world to share their music and message of inspiration, with performances planned in Miami, New York and Toronto. The band has also performed at Israel’s main Independence Day production on Har Herzl, as well as at the United States’ Fourth of July Independ-

ence Day event held at the US embassy in Jerusalem. “I’m amazed and thankful our music is being heard,” says Dina Samte, a vocalist and ukulele player for the band. Dina was born in Manipur, north-eastern India, and began losing her sight at the age of six. While in India, she was banned from school, as some parents worried her condition might be contagious. In Israel aged 10, she was able to go to school, learn Braille and study Hebrew. “For me, this band is the realisation of a dream I didn’t even know I had,” Dina adds. Shalva Band is inspiring music lovers

Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities. Set up in 1990, the nonprofit organisation helps thousands of people with disabilities and their families with everything from therapies, employment training and independent living, offering support for all ages, from infants to adults. The band began its journey at the Shalva National Centre in Jerusalem, where not only are members supported, but they each study, work and volunteer within the wider community. Many of the band members have gone through Shalva’s rehabilitative programmes, and developed their musical talents through its music therapy programme. Yair Pomburg, who plays

percussion and raps for the group, says he loves the fame resulting from Eurovision. Yair grew up participating in Shalva’s programmes, and also works at its coffee shop. “I love the fact I’m recognised in the street by fans who know me as the drummer from the Shalva Band,” he says. Yosef Ovadia, who has Williams Syndrome, a developmental disorder, plays drums for the band and has attended Shalva’s programmes since the age of seven. “My hope is always to be a role model for children with and without disabilities and I got a chance to do it from the greatest stage of all,” he says • The Shalva Band performs on Tuesday, 19 November, 7pm at South Hampstead United Synagogue. A ‘super-juicy’ melodrama based on the life of Benjamin Netanyahu is in the works. UK production company Fremantle is understood to be developing a show about the political and personal intrigues of Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, Variety reported this week. It would be the first television series about the embattled 70-year-old Likud politician, who is currently mired in multiple corruption scandals. Heading up the project is Fremantle’s Israeli arm, Abot Hameiri, which bought

the rights to a Netanyahu biography written by Israeli journalist Ben Caspit. Abot Hameiri co-founder Guy Hameiri says the show will be “a super-juicy family melodrama that explores how the personal can become political, and vice versa”. He also described it as “an epic political story with a very big philosophical and psychological undertone”. Netanyahu has served as prime minister since 2009, having previously been in the role from 1996 to 1999.

EXHIBITION Charlotte Salomon: Life? or Theatre? A major exhibition of German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon, who was murdered at Auschwitz, opens this week and features 50 works that have never previously been seen in the UK. Charlotte Salomon: Life? or Theatre? opens at Jewish Museum London tomorrow (Friday) and includes 230 colourful gouaches produced by the artist while in hiding during the early 1940s, in the south of France. Together they form a vivid selfportrait charting her complicated family life, marked by the suicides of nearly all her female relatives, as well as growing up in Berlin, her close relationship with her singing teacher, Alfred Wolfsohn, the rise of the Nazis and her subsequent exile to France. Born in Berlin in 1917, Salomon trained in illustration at the art academy in her home city, being only one of a tiny number of Jewish students admitted there. In 1938, she fled Germany alone and joined her grandparents in exile in the south of France. She later married a fellow refugee,

before being arrested and deported to Auschwitz in 1943, where she was murdered, five months pregnant and aged just 26. Dominik Czechowski, head of exhibitions at Jewish Museum London, says: “The themes of Salomon’s work remain compelling and resonant with urgent contemporary issues of oppression, mental health, Jewish identity, and unstable political environments.” Charlotte Salomon: Life? or Theatre? runs at Jewish Museum London from tomorrow until 1 March 2020. www.jewishmuseum.org.uk

Through the eyes of a KILLER Delphine Matthieussent speaks to the director of Incitement, which looks at events leading to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin

gripping dramatisation of the events leading up to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin offers fresh insight into his killer — and contemporary politics in Israel. On 4 November 1995, Jewish extremist Yigal Amir shot and killed Rabin at a peace rally in Tel Aviv. Amir opposed Rabin signing the Oslo accords with the Palestinians and the assassination dealt a serious blow to the peace process. The name of the killer still invokes trauma in Israel, and the decision to make a biopic humanising him was a risky one for director Yaron Zilberman. Incitement, which has just been chosen as Israel’s entry at the Oscars and will be screened at this year’s UK Jewish Film Festival, shows the killer as a complex figure. Yehuda Nahari Halevi portrays Amir as the spoiled son of a domineering mother who promised him a messianic destiny, seeking in extremist rabbis the strength lacking in his father, whose moderation he despised. Everything is shown through the eyes of the killer – the inflammatory preaching of rabbis against surrendering any “Israeli land”, attacks plaguing the country, and protests calling for the death of Rabin. Eventually, “eliminating” the man responsible for Oslo becomes an existential and religious imperative for Amir. The subject, which still haunts Israel’s national conscience, could have repelled audiences and critics – but 160,000 have to date seen Incitement in Israeli cinemas, in a country where local films often sell fewer than 10,000 tickets. It has also been selected to represent Israel at the Oscars in the best foreign film category. Incitement strikes a sensitive chord by portraying members of Israel’s current political class – including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – as participants in the social climate that contributed to Amir’s radicalisation. “I took the risk of showing him as a human being,” Zilberman says, in order to reveal the factors that “led him to his act”. He adds: “Among these factors there is at

least one in our control to avoid the next assassination, and that is incitement.” The film includes archival footage alongside filmed scenes. One sequence shows Netanyahu at a right-wing protest in Jerusalem at which demonstrators brand Rabin a Nazi and traitor. Such a scene has prompted anger from Culture Minister Miri Regev, who says the film suggests that Netanyahu participated in calls for violence against Rabin. But Zilberman says the contemporary context was crucial to understanding Amir. “The conventional wisdom was that this is an extremist weirdo, outside of society, a lone wolf who acted outside of any political camp… we discovered that this vision is totally untrue,” he said. He and his co-writers relied on psychiatric evaluations of Amir, interviews with security officials in charge at the time and meetings with Amir’s relatives. They also conducted more than 100 hours of telephone interviews with Amir, who is serving a life sentence. If the film shows Amir in his complexity, there is also no doubt about his guilt. For Zilberman, Israeli leaders – chiefly Netanyahu, who was elected prime minister six months after Rabin’s killing – have not done enough to end incitement to violence. “If things had been addressed properly then… I have no doubt we would have a different leadership today and that incitement would not have become acceptable and mainstream,” he says. Co-writer Ron Leshem says: “Some people who were considered back then as lunatics are considered now as mainstream.”

He believes the film also aims to contextualise the present. “It is a story about today, the future of Israel, the vision of some people, who have lost faith in democracy and want to turn

s far as I’m concerned, almost anything with toasted sesame oil is going to be good, and that’s certainly true of this gingerscented halibut and mushroom parcel. This serves two, but could be easily scaled up for a bigger crowd. (It seems like all my friends want to come over when I’m making it.)

L TOASTED SESAME OI 1.Preheat the oven to 200°C /400°F. Lay out two 9x11-inch sheets of parchment paper on a flat surface. Place the sliced mushrooms in the lower third of each parchment sheet. Season the halibut fillets generously with salt and pepper and place them on top of the mushrooms.

As Junior Bake Off kicks off this week, the 12-year-old budding baker shares her favourite recipe with readers… INGREDIENTS 675g strong bread flour 300ml warm water 7g easy blend yeast 50g caster sugar 1.5 teaspoons salt 3 tablespoons oil 2 large eggs, plus 1 egg for the glaze

METHOD 1. Place all ingredients in a bowl except for the water. Mix on a medium speed and slowly add the water until a dough forms. You may not need all the water. Knead on a medium high speed until the dough becomes soft and elastic. It should spring back when touched. 2. Move the dough to a greased bowl and place in the fridge (otherwise the dough won’t come out

right) to prove overnight. Bring the dough out three to four hours before you use it to bring it back to room temperature. Knock the dough back, adding flour to keep it from sticking. 3. Preheat the oven to 200°C. 4. If you are making 1 large challah: Split into 3; If you are making 2 medium challahs: Split into half, then each half into three; If you are making 3 small challahs: Split into 3 then each third into three. 5. Plait the challahs, then place on baking trays lined with greaseproof paper and prove for 30 minutes or until doubled in size. 6. Glaze with an egg, then bake for 15 to 18 minutes. Halfway through, when the challah starts going golden, take it out the oven and glaze again to make it more golden and shinier, then return to the oven for the remaining time. 7. Check if the challah is fully baked by tapping the base – it should sound hollow. Shabbat Shalom!

Starting on one side, crimp the edges together tightly so no liquid can escape and the contents are completely enclosed. Parents refusing to vaccinate their children?

BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN The Jewish journey starts in this week’s sedra with the immortal instruction to Avraham to leave his land, his birthplace and his father’s house to go to an unknown destination. While the Torah is sparing with the details of the backstory, rabbinic literature is replete with descriptions of the young Avram as a searcher and truth seeker. Avram is someone who lives with the courage of his convictions. He is referred to as Avraham Ha-Ivri, which literally means, “Avraham from the other side”. While the simple meaning behind this title is geographical location, as he came from beyond the Euphrates, there is a deeper message for us too. The Midrash describes him as being on one side of a metaphorical river with all of humanity on the other side. Indeed, he was willing to sacrifice everything for his beliefs, regardless of the social pressure surrounding him because of the courage of his convictions, long before God appeared to him with the immortal words of ‘lech lecha’. The knowledge that the universe has a Creator and that humanity can develop a personal relationship with God was revolutionary in its time and altered the course of world history. It’s no coincidence his descendants are called Ivriim, Hebrews, and the official language of Israel is Ivrit or Hebrew. Avraham’s message becomes part of our national consciousness. It is because of this our religion and identity has tenaciously withstood the test of time, with every generation understanding the role they have to play in maintaining it.

BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND In 2018, American couple Sarah and Travis Mitchell were imprisoned for six years for negligent homicide after refusing to call a doctor when their daughter, born prematurely at home, fell ill and died. As members of a church that rejects modern medicine, they chose to rely on the power of prayer. This case is extreme and abhorrent; it is obvious parental autonomy would never extend to relying on miracles instead of medicine. Consequently, British judge Justice Moylan ruled in 2014 the young son of Jehovah’s Witnesses could be compelled to receive a blood transfusion, contrary to his parents’ religious beliefs. Judaism takes as a given that we are custodians of our bodies. We are primarily eternal souls, and our temporary, physical bodies are ours to look after, not use

as we wish. While rabbinic authorities mandate a degree of autonomy, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein argues this is limited in cases, for example, where painful treatment could prolong life only temporarily. One cannot therefore give permission for another to harm oneself for no reason. Judaism recognises, however, that life involves risk. The verse “God protects the

innocent” is invoked by the Talmud, as well as all rabbinic authorities, to give mandate to trivial, prosaic activities, such as riding a bike or taking paracetamol, that God protects those who act normally, despite the presence of a small risk. Nevertheless, Rabbi Bleich writes that when there is a small, but remote danger that can be easily averted, such as wearing a seatbelt, taking a Tay-Sachs test, or being vaccinated, one can’t invoke this principle. Finally, Judaism gives weight to medical opinion – one is permitted to break Shabbat based on the majority of doctors’ opinions. Given the overwhelming number of doctors who support vaccination, that parents are custodians for their children’s health, and the nature of autonomy in Jewish medical ethics, it is untenable from a halachic standpoint to support the argument that parental authority allows parents to exempt their children from vaccination without medical grounds. ◆ Rabbi Garry Wayland is a teacher and educator for US Living and Learning

The Bible Says What? ‘Jacob feared seeing his son alive again’ BY RABBI JANET BURDEN Having mourned the death of his beloved son, Joseph, for 22 years, it’s hard to imagine what it must have felt like for Jacob to learn Joseph was actually alive. So it’s little wonder he was in such need of reassurance that he is sent a heavenly dream telling him “do not be afraid”. When receiving such good news, of what might Jacob be so afraid? Some commentators suggest he is afraid for the future of his family if they settle in Egypt. Will they lose their identity and adopt Egyptian ways? This is a reasonable speculation based on a close reading of the text. But what might another reading, one that considers the psychology of characters and situations, yield for us? Essentially, Jacob has been put in a position where he must radically revise the story he has been telling himself of his life. If he was wrong to accept Joseph’s death, about what else has he been wrong? Moreover, he has to accept the earlier perfidy of his

other sons, on whom he has learned to rely in the intervening years. What might they be scheming behind his back? I also believe Jacob had been living in a very particular kind of fear since his eyes saw Joseph’s bloodied coat. It is a fear that often goes unrecognised, as it is hard to put it into words and may last for years. Several people I know who have been bereaved in traumatic circumstances have used the word ‘fear’ to describe part of what they are feeling. Much as they might crave the promise of restoration Jacob appears to be given here, it is not in our hands to give it. What we can do, however, is to shift the focus as much as possible by our ongoing presence in their lives. If we can find a way to be with those who continue to suffer from past bereavement, it might be possible to take away a little of that pain.

Progressively Speaking It’s right to include victims of terror this Remembrance Day BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER Standing in silence for two minutes on Yom HaZikaron, the remembrance day for the fallen soldiers and victims of terror in Israel, is chilling. Cars come to a halt, people stop work. It’s beautiful and haunting. When I lived and worked in Israel, I would take the groups I was working with to mark Yom HaZikaron on Mount Herzl at the national memorial ceremony. When the commemorations were expanded to include the civilian victims of terror, it changed the nature of the ceremony and made it more inclusive. It expanded the meaning of sacrifice and service. This helped Israelis to recognise that war has many victims beyond the armed forces. Now it’s our turn in the UK to do the same. The Royal British Legion announced that for the first time this year, the red poppies will also symbolise the remembrance of civilian victims of conflict and acts

of terrorism. As Senior Rabbi to Reform Judaism, I have the privilege of representing non-Orthodox British Jewry at the Cenotaph this Sunday. The military presence, the silence and the prayers create a national sense of mourning. I welcome the change to extend the meaning of mourning, because it recognises that while not everyone can serve in the armed forces, there are those whose service was to keep the country running and the home fires warm during wartime. There were families and friends behind all those who served. And

there are also the innocent victims of terrorism over the decades, most recently the attacks at Manchester Arena and London Bridge. My late grandmother and grandfather lived in London during the war and served as civilians in the women’s section of the army during the Blitz. Those people who were killed, for instance, in the Blitz will now also be remembered; those who were keeping things going while the soldiers were away also served their country. The innocent bystanders, the children, who were just trying to get on with their lives will now be remembered too. Unlike Israel, in Britain where we don’t have a conscription army, there are still a multitude of ways to serve our country. Do not be too enthusiastic that you will come away from your first meeting with the exact figures for a financial settlement if those figures are not available. Sometimes it is not possible for even parameters to be set out if you have absolutely no idea of what is involved in your case.
