Rockets rain on Israel 350 missiles from Gaza after Islamic Jihad leader killed An Israeli air strike killed the leader of Islamic Jihad this week, sparking a furious response from the Gaza Strip which has seen more than 350 rockets fired into the Jewish state, writes Adam Decker. The latest fighting brought life in much of Israel to a standstill. Schools remained closed in communities near the Gaza border and restrictions on public gatherings continued as rockets rained down. Those attacks came after the early morning strike on Tuesday killed Bahaa Abu el-Atta and

his wife as they were sleeping. Rocket fire from Gaza reached as far north as Tel Aviv, and two people were wounded by shrapnel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a special Cabinet meeting that Israel has no interest in sparking a wider confrontation but warned the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad that Israel will keep pounding them until the rockets stop. “They know we will continue to strike them without mercy,” Netanyahu said. “They have one choice: either stop these attacks or absorb

more and more blows.” Gaza’s Hamas rulers have yet to enter the fray – a possible sign the current round of violence could be brief. Although larger and more powerful than Islamic Jihad, Hamas is also more pragmatic. With Gaza’s economy in tatters, it appears to have little desire for more fighting with Israel. Egypt, which frequently mediates between Israel and Gaza, has been working to de-escalate tensions, according to Cairo officials. Continued on page 16

News / Memorial fears / Javid call / News briefs

Community ‘steamrollered’ More ministers into supporting memorial should follow me Jewish peer Baroness Deech this week expressed “increasing unease” about the direction of Holocaust education, particularly “day trips to Auschwitz”, and warned children do not emerge with proper or knowledge of the contributions of Jews to the world, writes Jenni Frazer. Lady Deech, a cross bench peer and lawyer, is a passionate opponent of the proposed British Holocaust memorial in Westminster. She was one of three panellists marking the 81st anniversary of Kristallnacht on Monday evening at JW3, and used the occasion to tell the audience that “building a memorial [to the Holocaust] will not do the trick”, instead declaring that it allowed opportunist politicians to “put the Holocaust in a box”, signing a declaration once a year and have their photographs taken, and feeling satisfaction that the issue was dealt with. She later told Jewish News

that she believed the community was being “steamrollered” into supporting the Westminster Holocaust memorial, which she felt was becoming “nastily politicised”. Each of the panellists — Deech, together with the TV celebrities Robert Rinder and Rachel Riley — had agreed to mark Kristallnacht by speaking about antisemitism. Trudy Gold, consultant head of Holocaust studies at JW3, reminded the audience that after Kristallnacht Jews were fined a billion marks, to pay for the clean-up of the destruction of their own buildings. Rinder, the grandson of a Holocaust survivor who became one of “The Boys”, the group of young men and women who arrived in Britain in 1945, has made a documentary for the BBC about the Holocaust which will be screened next year. Better known as “Judge Rinder” for his TV court show, he urged the community to become

“better advocates” in putting the case and interests of Jews. “We need to be better, and we can,” he declared. He elicited gasps with an anecdote about an acquaintance who he said, was a regular on UK TV, who had said “Brexit was caused by the Jews”; he refused to identify this person. Rinder said there were better ways to deal with antisemites on social media. “We should say, I hear what you say, I’m sorry you think that, let me tell you a story [about Jewish contribution to British life].”

Riley, presenter of Countdown, described her experience at the hands of antisemitic abusers on Twitter and Facebook. She is involved in libel actions against a number of them. She said she had not been prepared for the level of abuse: “It went from being manageable to the state where I simply couldn’t look at it.” She said she was now putting her energies into two projects aimed at combating antisemitism, Stop Funding Fake News and the Centre for Countering Digital Hate.

Sajid Javid has said he hopes other ministers will take his lead in visiting the Western Wall, saying such a stop-off “shouldn’t have been extraordinary”, writes Justin Cohen. The Home Secretary broke with tradition in visiting Judaism’s holiest site this summer during a trip to the region in which he also held talks with the Palestinian prime minister. British ministers have stayed away for nearly two decades for fear of being seen to step into the conflict – although Prince

William visited during the first official Royal visit last year. During a visit to Finchley and Golders Green today to support Tory candidate Mike Freer, he told Jewish News: “Visiting the western wall shouldn’t have been so extraordinary for a British minister. I think I was the first cabinet minister in around 20 years and I was very pleased I did. It was important to me and I’d like to see that happen much more frequently.” Reflecting on two days of rocket attacks on Israel from Islamic Jihad following the assassination of a leader of the terror group, he also backed Israel’s right to respond. “Israel is one of our strongest allies,” he said. “We’ve always defended Israel’s right to defend itself especially from terrorism. It’s one of the reasons why as home secretary I fully banned Hezbollah.”

Winter Looks Much Brighter!

HORROR AT DESECRATION OF GRAVESTONES

British Jewish leaders reacted with horror this week to news that 80 gravestones had been desecrated in a 200-year old Jewish cemetery. Board of Deputies’ senior vice-president Sheila Gewolb said the incident “on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, is another example of the worrying and dangerous growth of antisemitism throughout Europe”. The graves are at the Østre Kirkegard cemetery in Denmark.

POLYGAMOUS ‘RABBI’ DIES

A messianic ‘rabbi’ from Stanmore who had seven so-called wives and at least 19 children has died at the age of 60. Philip Sharp will be laid to rest at Bushey Old Cemetery on Wednesday, in accordance with his wish to be buried near his mother. The focus of numerous tabloid stories and television appearances for his multiple marriages, Sharp claimed that polygamy was part of a divine plan, revealed to him by God. According to the Times of Israel in 2013, he was legally married to one wife – Hadas – and lived with at six others for over a decade, fathering multiple children, not all of whom were Jewish. His rabbinic ordination in 1993 from the International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues was revoked.

EDGWARE ‘RAPIST’ IN TRIAL

A court has heard that an alleged serial rapist carried out “shocking and depraved” attacks on 11 women and children, one of them Jewish from Edgware. Over three days, Joseph McCann, 34, allegedly abducted, raped and held prisoner a string of victims aged 11 to 71 across London, Hertfordshire and the North West. McCann, of Harrow, north-west London, is charged with multiple offences including 10 counts of false imprisonment, seven counts of rape, one count of rape of a child, two counts of causing or inciting a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, seven counts of kidnap, one count of attempted kidnap, and three counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. The trial is due to go on for six weeks.

General Election 2019 / News ELECTION BRIEFS

CANDIDATE QUITS OVER ISRAEL BLOG A Scottish Labour candidate has stepped down after a controversial blog emerged in which she compared Israel to a child abuser. Kate Ramsden, who was standing in the Gordon constituency currently held by Conservative Colin Clark, had said Israel was like an “abused child” who then goes on to commit abuse. Labour said the candidate had resigned for “personal reasons”.

CORBYN UPSET AT ‘HEY JEWS’ CLAIMS Jeremy Corbyn has said he is looking into reports that a member of his shadow cabinet sang “Hey Jews” to the Beatles song Hey Jude”. Dan Carden has denied the Buzzfeed news website’s story that he changed the lyrics on a private bus to London from the Cheltenham races in March last year. Corbyn said it was an “awful story” and “totally unacceptable” if true. Asked about the reports on a visit to Leeds, he said: “Dan Carden has emphatically denied that.” Carden, tweeted: “I have been categorical in my denial about these allegations.”

Candidate stands by ‘racist’ song Labour’s candidate for the Conservative-held marginal seat of St Ives has defended her band’s song from charges of antisemitism. Alana Bates is a bassist in The Tribunes, a selfdescribed “radical-political alternative rock four-piece band” formed in 2015. The song, uploaded to Spotify in 2018, is entitled From the River to the Sea, a controversial phrase often used at antiIsrael demonstrations to call for the country’s destruction. “With no justice, there’s no peace / troops out of the Middle East / with no justice, there’s no peace / get out of

Labour hopeful Alana Bates

the Middle East,” the song states. “Justice should not have to wait / Israel’s an apartheid state / Justice should not have to wait / Israel is a racist state,”

it continues. Later, the song calls on listeners to support the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement (BDS), saying “ethnic cleaning and the rest, support BDS”. Independent Cornwall councillor Tim Dwelly said the song was “repulsive racism” and called for Bates’ immediate expulsion from Labour. Dwelly, a former Labour member, tweeted: “Her band sings that Palestine should be ‘one state’. Israel should be ‘out of the Middle East’, is a ‘racist state’. Repulsive racism. She should be expelled by Labour .”

Bates told Jewish News the song had been removed from online platforms on the advice of the Labour Party but denied allegations of antisemitism, insisting the song written by the band’s lead singer and guitarist Kate Shilson does not call for Israel’s destruction. “The accusations are that it says we want Israel out of the Middle East but it actually says ‘troops out of the Middle East’,” she said. “That is an anti-war slogan, which is referring to British and American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the Middle East generally.”

Lawyer sorry for ripping down Berger poster at her election HQ A lawyer has apologised for ripping down a poster of Luciana Berger at the Lib Dem candidate’s election campaign HQ before launching into an angry tirade. Jonathan Metliss, a member of the Board of Deputies, was accused of calling the Liberal Democrat candidate “evil” and a “disgrace” for contesting

Finchley and Golders Green, the seat held by Tory MP Mike Freer. Last Friday afternoon Metliss walked uninvited into Berger’s office and tore a campaign poster off the window while shouting abuse about her for opposing the Conservative. A spokesperson for Berger said the

incident had been reported to the parliamentary police. Metliss said he apologised “unreservedly”.

ELECTION BRIEFS

LIB DEM SORRY FOR NAZI GHETTO’ SLUR A Liberal Democrat candidate has apologised over a tweet sent in 2014 comparing Gaza to “Nazi ghettos in which Jews were trapped”. Wera Hobhouse most recently served as the party’s climate change spokesperson. Elected to represent Bath in 2017, she told Jewish News: “I abhor antisemitism with every fibre. My mother’s brothers and sisters had to flee the Holocaust as they were Jewish, and it destroyed their families. I had an uncle in Dachau, and a great uncle murdered because he was mentally ill.”

BLUNKETT ‘DESPAIR’ AT PARTY THUGGERY Labour former Home Secretary David Blunkett said the “antisemitism” and “thuggery” in the party makes him “despair”. Lord Blunkett, who was an MP for 28 years and sits as a Labour peer in the upper chamber, said the likelihood of Jeremy Corbyn winning a majority was “extraordinarily slim”. But he urged party moderates to “stay and fight” to ensure the “voice of reason” prevailed, following deputy leader Tom Watson standing down.

General Election 2019 / The battle for Hertsmere

Who’ll win Herts and minds? by Jenni Frazer @Jennifrazer

Behind the bland, catch-all title of Hertsmere’s leafy hedges lie some of the largest Jewish residential neighbourhoods in the country: Bushey, Borehamwood and Radlett. And incumbent Conservative – and minister, Oliver Dowden – has set his Labour and Lib Dem opponents a steep mountain to climb, nursing a nearly 17,000 majority from the 2017 election. But Dowden, like his opposing candidates, says he takes nothing for granted, and has been out in all weathers soliciting votes in the constituency. Labour came second in the 2017 election in Hertsmere, but this time have picked a different candidate, the Chicago-born Holly Kal-Weiss, a special needs teacher who joined the party after Ed Miliband lost the 2015 election. She has been a British citizen since 2006, so only voted for the first time in 2010. “I joined because I had become very much involved in fighting homelessness in Barnet, and wanted to do something about it,” she explains. Many would-be MPs do a stint as councillors first, but Kal-Weiss’s council said she did not have enough experience and sent her away. Now, she says, laughing, “I’m getting experience.” And as a Labour hopeful in a climate so fraught that one local synagogue has declined

Hertsmere’s Conservative incumbent Oliver Dowden, pictured at the Western Wall

to host a hustings because of the fear of abuse – primarily against Kal-Weiss and her party – she certainly has a struggle on her hands. She already has vast personal experience of diversity. “My husband’s from Zimbabwe. His brother’s in Cape Town. My brother’s in Chicago, my dad’s in LA, my sister’s in Israel – so flying round the world is our life. I come from one of those families where we talked about politics all the time, and my extended family are politically active.” She says her policies “are of the left – but

I don’t think they are particularly radical. If, for example, it’s radical to suggest a young person should be able to rent a flat rather than a room, then it’s radical, but I don’t think it is. “I don’t think it’s radical to say we should have a decent transport system that actually works. In Hertsmere, if you want to get a bus from Radlett to Potters Bar, you couldn’t do it. You have to drive. So how are we going to tackle green issues if we don’t tackle transportation?” Kal-Weiss, 54, is certainly enthusiastic – and

a joiner. In alliances that may perplex some, she has joined Momentum, the Labour Party, the Jewish Labour Movement and Jewish Voice for Labour. She is also an active member of Finchley Reform Synagogue. “I like to know what it’s all about,” she says of her various memberships, but has scaled back and now says: “I just want to be in Labour.” She has never called herself a “Corbynista”, she says, believing that “it is dangerous to pin everything on one person. I’m part of a movement of people”. But she is, nevertheless, happy to say that Jeremy Corbyn is “perfectly fit to be prime minister”. Kal-Weiss says she thinks about the antisemitism issue “all the time”, but adds she has never experienced antisemitism directly herself. “When people say the Labour Party is institutionally antisemitic, that hasn’t been my experience. “That doesn’t mean individual people in the party have not overstepped the mark, and we need to deal with that. But racism in general is on the rise, and it has started to bubble up everywhere. The mood in the world has changed.” She admits she has had some social media abuse from the Jewish community, including an allegation that she has “Jewish blood on her hands”. But, one week into the campaign, she is confident and enthusiastic that, at a minimum, she can persuade the voters of Hertsmere to

The battle for Hertsmere / General Election 2019

Lib Dem Stephen Barrett is unfazed by the mountain he must climb in the constituency

dent Dowden’s majority, if not to topple him outright, if she explains policies clearly and sincerely. Stephen Barrett, the Lib Dem candidate, is equally confident – although with different reasons. He, like other Lib Dems, is buoyed by his party’s good results in the May European elections, and has an interesting weapon in his appeal to the Jewish voters in Herts – his agent is former Board of Deputies treasurer Laurence Brass, once himself a candidate. Barrett, just 28, belies his youthful looks with his work as a school business leader – the person responsible for everything that takes place in a school except for the teaching. For Barrett, a district councillor in St Albans and a native of Birmingham, that means dealing with 157 staff in his present school and

a £16 million budget. “I see the impact of my work on the kids,” he says. “I know I can make a difference to people’s lives.” Making a difference is what Barrett aims to do in Hertsmere, and he is unfazed by the low vote for his Lib Dem predecessor in the 2017 election, who could only manage a rather woeful 2,794 votes – compared with Dowden’s 31,928. His confidence comes from the peculiarity of this particular election. “This is the most extraordinary election we have ever faced. All the normal voting conventions are completely out of the window, and people are abandoning their usual party loyalties in such waves that it’s incredible,” he explains. “There is a strong Lib Dem surge happening, and people are crying out for something new and fresh.”

Labour hopeful Holly Kal-Weiss, left, is an active member of Finchley Reform Synagogue

Out of the three main candidates, Barrett clearly knows the least about the Jewish community, but says he is “learning very quickly”. Out canvassing, he identifies readily the Jewish households and says his views “align naturally with those of Jewish voters” on key issues such as faith schools, security and shechita. He has been invited to meet the sixth form at Yavneh College and has joined the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel. He has not visited the Jewish state, but says he would “relish the opportunity” to do so. On Brexit, Barrett says the reaction he is getting is “please stop this madness”, and is “absolutely convinced that it can be stopped”. But Dowden, 41, former special adviser and deputy chief of staff to David Cameron, though himself once a Remainer, believes the opposite.

He says “the overwhelming feeling from all my constituents is that we should get Brexit done”, and that the task now is “to ensure we leave the EU in a smooth and orderly fashion”. Dowden is chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for British Jews, and reels off a list of his Jewish-related input: “a member of Conservative Friends of Israel, lobbied against the flying of Hezbollah flags, involved with Mitzvah Day, lobbied for a new primary school for Yavneh College, attended the Enough is Enough rally…” In other words, Dowden, held by many to be an astute political operator, has done his homework and has engaged closely with the Jewish community. Although he says he takes nothing for granted, Dowden sounds confident that on 13 December he will be the MP for Hertsmere.

News / General Election 2019

Williamson lambasted for ‘racist’ resignation letter The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) has lambasted Chris Williamson’s “racist” resignation letter for employing “the antisemitic trope that the Israeli government is meddling in British politics”. Williamson handed in his letter resigning from the Labour Party on Wednesday evening after being a member for nearly 44 years and announced his decision to stand as an independent in Derby North. The decision came hours after Labour’s ruling body opted not to endorse Williamson as a candidate in next month’s general election after his suspension Chris Williamson

from the party over the antisemitism row. Williamson was first suspended in February after footage emerged of him telling activists Labour had been “too apologetic” in its response to criticism of its handling of antisemitism. In his letter, Williamson accused Labour officials of enabling and executing a “witch hunt against hundreds of socialists loyal to Jeremy Corbyn and his transformative, socialist, anti-imperialist worldview”. He added; “Many of the victims of this witch hunt have been Jewish socialists, whose anti-Zionism is

His letter talks of a ‘witch hunt’ by ‘apartheid apologists’

anathema to the apartheid apologists apparently influencing Labour foreign and domestic policy.” The Derby North politician went on to accuse party officials of “capitulating” to JLM, one of the party’s oldest affiliate groups. He claimed that the group was “revived in 2015 at the same time as the State of Israel launched a diplomatic strategy to delegitimise Palestinian activism on the left and normalise Zionism in our movement”. He argued that the “witch hunt” serves “far-right activ-

ists – including members of Britain First and the Jewish Defence League.” The resignation letter sparked criticism, with JLM saying Williamson had “shown why he should have been kicked out of the Labour Party a long tome ago [sic], not allowed to walk away”. The group added that the “racist resignation letter employs the antisemitic trope that the Israeli government is meddling in British politics to manufacture antisemitism through the Jewish Labour Movement”.

Tributes to ‘strong ally’ Tom Watson

Lib Dems not sorry for ‘psychos’ tweet The Liberal Democrats have defended a tweet from a candidate’s personal account appearing to describe Israeli leaders as “psychopaths.” Helen Belcher, 56, who joined her party in 2015, is contesting Chippenham in next month’s general election – a seat held by Conservative Michelle Donelan. A tweet sent from Belcher’s account in 2014 appears to suggest that Israeli, ISIS and Ukrainian leaders be sent to an “isolated place.” “Trying to work out if there’s a way we can send psychopaths to an isolated place instead of them ending up in charge. #Ukraine #Israel #ISIS,” the tweet says. A spokesperson for the party said “Helen’s tweet alludes to leaders whom she feels are behaving like psycho

paths, it makes no reference to their ethnicity in relation to this.” Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson reaffirmed on Wednesday the Liberal Democrat policy of backing a two-state solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. “The public want peace and our role, to the extent that we can influence this, is to try and make sure a peaceful solution, two states existing side by side in harmony, can be achieved,” she said.

Tributes were paid in the community to Tom Watson after the “strong ally” stood down as an MP and deputy leader on Wednesday evening. The deputy leader, elected to the position in 2015, will remain in his post until polling day on 12 December. Watson, who has served West Bromwich East since 2001, said he will remain “as committed to Labour as ever.” He said he hoped to “start a different kind of life” and that his decision was ” personal, not political”. Watson has been a vocal critic of Labour’s handling of antisemitism complaints and clashed with party leader Jeremy Corbyn on the issue. Following news of Watson’s resignation, he was praised on social media for his support for the community. The Jewish Labour Movement described the decision as “shocking and saddening” and Labour Friends of Israel thanked Watson for his “steadfast opposition to antisemitism and support for Israel”.

Laura McAlpine in Harlow with Jeremy Corbyn

A Labour election candidate backed her chief campaigner after he wrote about a “Jewish final solution”. Laura McAlpine, who is aiming to unseat Conservative Robert Halfon in Harlow in December’s election, supported top aide Brett Hawksbee in emails to colleagues, seen by Jewish News, despite one party official warning Hawksbee had “breached IHRA (the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism) in almost every single way possible”. Hawksbee blogged in September 2018: “The fear of many on the left is that the ideological successors of the bombers of the King David Hotel, the mass murderers who decimated Deir Yassin, would be quite happy to see a pogrom in Gaza and the West Bank, a Jewish final solution to the Palestine problem.” McAlpine resisted calls from party officials to publicly condemn the remarks. One email circulated to Labour staffers reads: “She (McAlpine) isn’t happy with the first line (of the apology) because she doesn’t want to be disloyal to someone who

Jewish Brexit Party hopeful is standing against Corbyn A kippah-wearing Brexit Party candidate is challenging Jeremy Corbyn at the forthcoming election, writes Jack Mendel. Yosef David will stand in Islington North, moving away from the Hendon constituency where he was billed to stand before his party’s Yosef David election pact with

the Tories. This comes after the Brexit Party’s leader Nigel Farage said he had taken the “difficult decision” not to contest 317 seats held by the Conservatives at the last election – amid fears it could lead to a hung parliament and a second referendum. David, who grew up in Golders Green and is a social worker

for a big Jewish charity, will come up against the Labour leader, who holds one of the safest seats in the country, with a majority of 60 percent. Speaking about relishing the opportunity to take on Corbyn, he said: “I am aware that overturning a 30,000+ majority would be a miracle. This is about highlighting the impact of the antisemitism epidemic in the Labour Party on the community. I am focused on British Jewry and the impact in our country. ” While he has concerns about

With party leader Nigel Farage

antisemitism, he added that: “I am primarily standing because of Brexit. Labour led by Corbyn has abandoned four or five million leave voters.” David added: “I never had any intention of entering politics but I

‘organises so much for her and who she is on the phone with three times a day’.” The email continues: “She also echoed his view that the context somewhat excuses the remarks. I made it clear that her loyalty is to the reputation of the Labour Party but not sure what impact that made.” According to local newspaper Your Harlow and the local Conservative group, McAlpine did not make a public statement over Hawksbee, but a statement condemning him was prepared by the party, to be released “in case of future comms enquiries”. McAlpine told Jewish News: “I did not and would not defend Brett Hawksbee’s remarks in this blog. The royal family led tributes at a service in central London, attended by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and five former British PMs. Chief Rabbi Mirvis tweeted that he “was honoured to attend the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the cenotaph to pay tribute to the men and women of our armed forces who gave their lives for the sake of our freedom. #LestWeForget” Senior Rabbi of Reform Judaism, Laura Janner-Klausner, said: “It’s an immense blessing to attend,” adding that “this year was especially poignant as it was the first year in which we are marking civilian deaths alongside the sac-

Survivor dedicates award to her ‘unsung hero’ father Holocaust survivor Helen Aronson has urged society to “speak up” about genocide and “ensure these things never happen again”, as she accepted a Jewish Care award, writes Francine Wolfisz. Aronson, 92, was named as the recipient of Jewish Care’s Topland Business Luncheon Award, held at Grosvenor House Hotel, in Park Lane. More than 800 people attended the event, which helped raise £320,000 to support Jewish Care’s services. Aronson was just 15 when she was sent from her home town in Pabjanice, Poland, to Lodz ghetto. She, her mother and brother were among a handful of 750 survivors

BERCOW REVEALS RACIST ABUSE Former Commons Speaker John Bercow has spoken out about being subjected to antisemitic abuse in an interview with GQ Magazine. Speaking to Tony Blair’s former aide Alastair Campbell, the former Conservative MP discussed the row over antisemitism. The 56-year-old, who stood down as MP for Buckingham, told Campbell of the abuse allegedly

aimed at him by an individual from “outside Parliament”. Bercow recalled: “I remember somebody saying to me, ‘you know if I had my way, people like you, Berkoff, wouldn’t be in this place.’ “I said to this individual ‘when you say people like me, do you mean people like me in the sense that I’m lower class or Jewish?’ To which he replied, ‘both’.”

Strangers gathered at Waltham Abbey cemetery in Epping Forest at 11am to answer the call for a minyan to give Gloria Starr a proper send-off.

“We were able to give Gloria Starr z’l, the dignified Jewish burial she deserved,” the synagogue movement said on Twitter. “It was a humbling experience and showcased the Jewish community at its best: supporting each other. Dear Reader, Have you considered leaving a gift in your Will to a Jewish Charity? In 2013, 93% of the 263,346 Jews in the UK, reported donating money to a charity in the past year. Although this is a very comforting figure and reflects the importance with which charities are viewed, according to the most recent research from 2011, only 1 in 4 leave a gift in their Will. This disparity of figures could be due to the fact that the giving of lifetime donations are entrenched in our charitable history. From as early as the 10th Century BCE, charity boxes were permanently affixed in the synagogue, with separate sections for all communal organisations. Conversely, actively encouraging the public to leave money to charities in a Will did not begin until 2012, with the launch of Jewish Legacy. With the prevalence of student loans, higher mortgages and reliance on credit cards, to-day, less people are able to make regular donations than ever before. Hence, for some, leaving a gift in one’s Will is their only option. Leaving money to charity does not have to be at the detriment of your family and friends, who, of course, are and should be your priority. However, after thinking of them, any amount left to a Jewish Charity will help the fu-ture of our community immeasurably. With this in mind, we implore everyone to consider this form of giving (as we have)- a gift that will live on for years after we have gone. From the secular to the observant, those with lower and higher means, whoever you are, whatever your situation, anyone can help make a difference and help create a better world by including a charity in their Will. Charities improve our lives through the work they do, be it through providing housing, medical treatment or entertainment to those in need of their services. Leaving money in your Will, can help your favourite charity make a real difference to countless people in need, both in the here and now and into the future. “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.” Albert Einstein Our Jewish Charities need your support. News / No2H8 Crime Awards 2019

Glittering awards honour our crime fighting heroes Politicians, celebrities, sports stars and community leaders vowed to stand “shoulder to shoulder” in the fight against hate at the fourth No2H8 Crime Awards last week, writes Adam Decker. Nearly 300 people gathered at the InterContinental hotel on Park Lane for the fourth annual ceremony, which champions the ‘upstanders’ who tackle hatred, prejudice and intolerance. Fiyaz Mughal, creator of the awards and founder of the antiMuslim hate crime monitoring project TellMAMA, said: “This is about celebrating those people who have been upstanders against hate, who have stood up and done the right thing for other people in an increasingly difficult and fractious environment. “It is that strong moral compass that forms the bedrock of this country and, collectively, our pluralist society will always overcome challenges,” he added. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis issued a powerful warning around the ease in which “hate speech can be translated to hate crime”, cautioning that “so many of our leaders are legitimising hateful actions and attacks on those who disagree with them”. He added: “We shouldn’t be interested in uniformity, but

should uphold the values of unity.” Thirteen awards were issued throughout the evening hosted by comedian Sanjeev Bhaskar, who argued that “selective compassion doesn’t exist” and that “compassion for all was the key”. Attendees included Olympic gold medal winning javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson, and London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Sophie Linden. Highlights included the Jo Cox Memorial Award, which was won by David Linsey, who

spoke movingly of the need to “seek justice but not to be angry… to show terrorists we value our life”. David’s siblings, Amelie and Daniel, were killed in the Easter bombings earlier this year in Sri Lanka. The 22-year-old has since raised more than £320,000 for the Amelie & Daniel Linsey Foundation to provide access to shelter, education and therapy for local people affected. Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Helen Ball, movingly spoke of her determi-

nation to “prevent anyone going through the trauma” she experienced witnessing her younger adopted sister attempt to “scrub off her black skin” after a spate of viscous bullying. The TellMAMA Special Award for Championing Hate Crime Work was won by Lord Nick Bourne who, as faith minister, spearheaded the government’s fight against hate crime. The Media Upstander Award, presented by Jewish News editor Richard Ferrer, was won by the Guardian’s Amelia Gentleman in recognition of her investigation into the Windrush scandal. Other awards included the Business Upstander Award, won by Chelsea FC for raising awareness of hate through their ‘Say No To Antisemitism’ campaign. Club chairman Bruce Buck said: “We have used our social media to spread the message that antisemitism and any form of discrimination has no place in football or in our communities.” The Lifetime Achievement Upstander Award was won by Mark Healy, founder of 17-24-30 National Hate Crime Awareness Week, in remembrance of three nail bombings in London targeting black, Asian and gay communities in 1999.

CHIEF: LEADERS LEGITIMISE HATE & INTOLERANCE

The Chief Rabbi addresses the audience

The Chief Rabbi has warned that “so many of our leaders are legitimising hateful actions and attacks on those who disagree with them”. Speaking at the No2H8 Awards, Ephraim Mirvis expressed frustration with the “tone of hatred” set by leaders who were failing to deal with the “substantive issues that they should be debating”. He urged attendees to “uphold the values of unity”, arguing that to say no to hate was insufficient. “We also need to say yes to love, compassion, unity and peace.” He further cautioned of the “enormous damage” in an age of “global publishers”, where “irresponsible messages containing venom and hate” were being readily replicated. “We should have a society of peace, harmony, unity, tolerance and compassion but, sadly, that is not always the case,” he added. “We should focus our attention on how we communicate, how we argue and how we relate to others who are not like us.”

Oberman: We face critical moment Tracy-Ann Oberman warned of reaching “some sort of endgame in Europe again”, as she revealed the continent “frightens me”. Speaking to Jewish News at the No2H8 Awards, the ex-EastEnders actor argued the British Jewish community faced a “critical moment”, caught in a “pincer movement between the far right and hard left”.

Oberman explained that being taken to Yad Vashem as a young girl was the “most defining moment of my life”, driving her determination to “stand up to bullying and racism, and not to go quietly”. The Friday Night Dinner star said she was “not an activist or a politician”, having looked to the “grown-ups” to tackle racism and conspiracy theories

on social media. It was her realisation that so few were speaking out that prompted her to intervene since she “couldn’t be quiet anymore.” It was revealed earlier this year that Oberman and Countdown presenter Rachel Riley were preparing legal action against up to 70 people for tweets relating to their campaign against antisemitism in the Labour

Party. The former British Soap Awards winner argued the Labour Party “has let us down so fundamentally through its lack of action and protection of racists and misogynists”. “You can’t call yourself a peacemaker when you’re prepared to stand by as your Jewish female MPs are hounded out of the party, which they have been members of for many years.”

News / Mitzvah Day 2019

25,000 volunteers set for day of good deeds More than 25,000 volunteers are preparing to take part in this weekend’s Mitzvah Day, with this year’s focus on helping the environment, writes Jack Mendel. The community is being urged to “plant, collect, clean and make your project green”, for the annual day of Jewish social action, to reduce general waste and their carbon footprint. In the day’s flagship event, which will take place at JW3, hundreds of people will cook meals for the homeless from donated food. Mitzvah Day’s chief executive, Georgina Bye, said: “We know that our volunteers love to cook, donating the results to local homeless shelters. “This year, in an effort to reduce both food waste and our carbon footprint, we are asking them to do a fridge sweep and bring along items that are left over. “Everyone will then be taking those two spare carrots, the half a bag of potatoes, apples from the tree in the garden and the almost full bag of lentils from that recipe which was only ever made once – and getting creative to create something delicious.” As well as reducing food waste, this year’s Mitzvah Day will be hosting more treeplanting projects than ever, in addition to

running schemes including cleaning up local parks and cemeteries, collecting clothes and food for the needy and organising singalongs at care homes. Known for bringing people together for the past 11 years, Mitzvah Day will continue its theme of interfaith work, encouraging Jewish and non-Jewish volunteers to learn more about each other through good deeds. In previous years, the Jewish and Muslim community have taken part in blood donation schemes and mass chicken soup-making for the homeless. Inspired by Mitzvah Day, the Muslim community launched its equivalent – Sadaqa Day – in 2015. Mitzvah Day events have been planned right across the UK, including in London, Hertfordshire, Essex, Manchester and Leeds, as well as places without significant Jewish communities such as Peterborough, in Cambridgeshire, and Whitehaven, in Cumbria. Senior Rabbi to Reform Judaism, Laura Janner-Klausner, said: “I hope as many people as possible will use this day to recycle, reuse and to reinvigorate efforts to protect our previous environment.” Beyond the UK, more than 15,000 activities will take place across 30 countries. As Mitzvah Day enters its second decade as a charity, one constant has remained – a focus on bringing together Jews with those of other faith communities and uniting them in social action. Here, Simon Rothstein picks five of the finest interfaith projects in the past 20 years.8 CHICKEN SOUP! Mitzvah Day celebrated its 10th anniversary with a unique concept: cooking a recordbreaking amount of chicken soup to feed the homeless. The event took place at the East London Mosque, in partnership with Muslim Aid, where more than 1,000 portions of soup were cooked throughout the day. Joining Imam Mohammed Mahmoud and Muslim volunteers from the Mosque and 8th East London Scout Group were Rabbi Roni Tabick and young Jews from New Stoke Newington Synagogue. Two soups were made – a traditional Jewish chicken using halal chickens and a vegetarian alternative with recipe provided by Masterchef winner Saliha Mahmood-Ahmed. “I was delighted to contribute to this fantastic interfaith venture,” Saliha said. “To me the Cookathon was testament to the immense power to do good that arises from friendly collaborative ventures across communities.” THE CHIEF AND THE CARDINAL Although Mitzvah Day’s main focus is bringing people of faith at the grassroots together, it has had many memorable examples of religious leaders following suit. On one such occasion Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the UK’s most senior Roman Catholic, joined forces to sort clothes for the homeless at South Hampstead High School. The Chief Rabbi said: “The energy, compassion and kindness with which thousands of people on Mitzvah Day give of their time for countless worthy activities never fails to inspire me.”

COOKING UP A TREAT The Salaam Shalom Kitchen, a partnership between Nottingham Liberal Synagogue and Muslim social action charity Himmah, is always a hub of activity on Mitzvah Day. In its year-round project, volunteers from the Muslim and Jewish communities, together with many other individuals and groups, work together to offer hot meals – and company – to those suffering food poverty. On Mitzvah Day, and its Muslim equivalent Sadaqa Day, fun activities are also on offer. Rabbi Tanya Sakhnovich, of Nottingham Liberal Synagogue, said: “This project doesn’t just help those in need. It helps Muslims and Jews build better relationships. It has allowed people to make genuine friendships. We think of ourselves as a family.” SCHOOL TIES In a longstanding partnership formed from Mitzvah Day, secondary pupils from JCoSS and the Lady Nafisa Muslim School spend time each year cooking for the homeless and helping out at shelters and food banks. THREE FAITHS IN DUNKIRK In one Mitzvah Day project, 12 women from three faiths – and representing eight of Britain’s leading charities and institutions – took five car loads of goods to the Women’s Refugee Centre in Dunkirk. As well as delivering items ranging from tents to colouring books, the Christian, Jewish and Muslim women spent two days at the centre, getting to know the refugees and their children by talking, playing games and painting nails. Onjali Rauf, founder and chief executive of the human rights charity Making Herstory, led the trip. “Our faiths have their own traditions, practices and ways of being,” she said. “But, at our core, we are humans bound by an unshakeable obligation to help our fellow humans no matter who they are or where they are from.”  Find out more at mitzvahday.org.uk

350 rockets from Gaza after Israel kills al-Atta Continued from page 1 Islamic Jihad rejected the efforts, with spokesman Musab al-Berim saying the group’s priority is to “respond to the crime and confront the Israeli aggression”. Seeking to keep the outburst under control, the Israeli military has restricted its operations to Islamic Jihad, and nearly all the Gaza casualties so far have been members of the terror group. Israel’s new defence minister Naftali Bennett said Israel would not hesitate to carry out additional targeted killings against those who threaten it. “Whoever plans to harm us during the day, will never be safe to make it through the night,” he said after taking office on Tuesday.

‘A ticking bomb’ Baha Abu al-Atta, 42, was a commander for Islamic Jihad, a terror group that often acts independently of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israel accused him of being the mastermind behind the recent barrage of rocket attacks into civilian areas of southern Israel, as well as holding him responsible for most of the sniper and drone fire from the region. Al-Atta, whose wife was killed in the strike, which also wounded two of his

children, had reportedly survived numerous assassination attempts in the past decade His father claimed that he had gone into hiding over fears of being targeted. Benjamin Netanyahu said al-Atta was an “arch terrorist” who was “the main generator of terrorism from the Gaza Strip. “He was a ticking bomb, in the midst of plotting additional attacks these very days,” the Israeli prime minister added.

No Israeli deaths have been caused by the rockets attacks, mostly thanks to Israel’s Iron

Dome, which the military said intercepted some 90 percent of the projectiles. A few homes suffered direct strikes, though, and there was a near miss on a major highway, where a rocket crashed down just after a vehicle had passed. In Gaza, the Islamic Jihad said 38-year-old Khaled Faraj, a brigade commander, was killed early on Wednesday

along with another terrorist from the group’s Quds radio network. Four others were killed in an air strike, including a father and two sons, and two others were targeted later. Along with Tuesday’s predawn strike in Gaza, another strike attributed to Israel targeted a senior Islamic Jihad commander based in Syria. The strikes appeared to be

EU court rules settlement goods must be labelled The European Union’s top court this week ruled that EU countries must oblige retailers to identify products made in Israeli settlements with special labels, in a ruling likely to spark anger in Israel. The European Court of Justice said “foodstuffs originating in the territories occupied by Israel must bear the indication of their territory of origin”. The Luxembourg-based

court said that when products come from an Israeli settlement, their labelling must provide an “indication of that provenance”. The EU has consistently spoken out against settlement expansion, saying it undermines the hopes for a twostate solution by gobbling up lands claimed by the Palestinians. It is a position backed by the international community. The EU wants any produce

made in the settlements to be easily identifiable to shoppers and insists they should not carry the generic Made in Israel label. Palestinians claim both areas as parts of a future state.

Israel maintains the labelling is unfair and discriminatory and “sets a double standard” and claims that other countries involved in territorial disputes are not similarly sanctioned.

Blogger ‘sorry’ for Auschwitz duck pic A travel blogger has apologised after posting a photo on his Instagram account of a rubber duck on the iconic tracks outside of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The blogger, who goes by the Instagram handle @atuk. apil and writes in Spanish, has taken photos of the rubber duck in front of other

sites, including Buckingham Palace, the Colosseum, Red Square, and Mount Vesuvius. The account has around 3,400 followers. The image of the death camp in Poland (pictured) has since been taken down. The Auschwitz Memorial called the blogger out in a tweet last Wednesday, after

which the blogger posted an apology. “The intention of the post was ... without intentions to disrepect or generate controversy on the matter. My sincerest apologies to @auschwitzmemorial for the inconvenience and to all the people who have felt offended.”

An 89-year-old Auschwitz survivor in Italy needs 24-hour police protection after receiving death threats for calling on the government to combat hate crime. Liliana Segre, a life senator, urged the government in Rome to establish a committee to tackle the rise of racism, antisemitism, incitement to hatred and violence based on ethnic or religious lines, and the response proved its necessity. A well-known liberal figure disliked by Italy’s powerful right-wing nationalist parties such as Matteo Salvini’s Forza Italia, Segre received a bar-

rage of antisemitic messages after prompting a Senate vote, which passed despite Forza’s opposition. Born in Milan in 1930, her father tried to escape persecution with her by fleeing to Switzerland in 1943, but they ended up on a train to Auschwitz, where he and her grandfather died.

SPAIN FAR-RIGHT SURGE Spain this week became the latest European country to register a strong electoral showing for the far-right, after Vox more than doubled its seats to become the third most powerful party. While the governing Socialists won, news was dominated by the surge in ballot box

support for right-wing parties, including for the secondplaced Popular Party (PP) and Vox, whose supporters routinely perform a fascist salute. Spaniards elected the Socialists with 120 of the parliament’s 350 seats, but the PP made big gains, winning 88 seats, while Vox won 52.

The boss of giant Berlinbased media group Axel Springer SE has been honoured for his efforts to counter antisemitism. artists, writers, directors and cameramen at the forefront of the German film industry. Another used literary material to show how Berlin became “a city of refuge for tens of thousands of Yiddish speakers from the former Austro-Hungarian and Czarist empires, including many leading Yiddish cultural figures”. Elsewhere in the city, as the world marked 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall last weekend, a Jewish educational and social entrepreneurship conference remembered another anniversary falling on the same day – Kristallnacht. The annual Netavim Conference, also supported by GPG and the Jewish Agency, took place between Friday and Sunday, marking both 30 years since the Wall came down and 81 years since Nazi thugs attacked Jewish-owned stores, buildings and synagogues. Both events took place on Saturday and each left “a direct and decisive stamp on the history of German Jewry”. While the pogroms of Kristallnacht – or ‘Night of Broken Glass’ – is widely

considered to mark the beginning of the Holocaust, 9 November 1989 paved the way for the unification of Germany on the principles of freedom and democracy. Programme directors said the fall of the Wall also heralded a “Jewish exodus from the Soviet bloc and the dramatic renewal of the Jewish community in Germany”. Ilia Salita, GPG chief executive and president, said the Nevatim programme had become “one of the hallmarks of this wondrous revitalisation of Jewish life in Germany, producing more than 150 Jewish educational initiatives and projects nationwide”. This year’s conference was held at Spandau Citadel, just metres from the site of the Berlin Wall and the infamous Spandau Prison, where leading Nazis were locked up after the Nuremberg Trials.

Visitors from around the world travelled to Berlin last week to hear how the city became the “capital of Jewish modernism” 100 years ago, in the week of two anniversaries – the fall of the Berlin Wall and Kristallnacht. The four-day Eshkolot festival celebrating the art, innovation and technology that burst out of Weimar Berlin a century ago let visitors immerse themselves in the worlds of Jewish writers, philosophers, musicians and architects, each making strides in their fields. Supported by the Genesis Philanthropy Group (GPG) and the Jewish Agency for Israel, it showcased Metropolis: Weimar Berlin as the Capital of Jewish Modernism across the city from last Monday to Thursday. “A hundred years ago, Weimar Berlin became a global migration hub, a multilingual marketplace, exploding with artistic, technological and social innovation amid economic crises and decadent nightlife,” said the festival organisers. “For about a decade, it was a capital of Jewish modernism.” On the closing night, there was a free concert featuring 1920s avant-garde experiments in musical composition from Jewish greats, such as Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Kurt Weill, Stefan Wolpe and Erwin Schulhoff, who died in a concentration camp less than two decades later. “The aim of the festival is to create an immersive experience of 1920s Berlin through the study of historical and literary sources, to uncover the traces of Jewish Metropolis still influencing the life of today’s city,” said organisers. Among the events was a special session with Russian-born refusenik Natan Sharansky who, in February 1986, crossed the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin after spending nine years in Soviet prison on trumped-up charges of espionage. Sharansky, who later became head of the Jewish Agency, discussed his work with German Jewry in the decades since, and how he regards the evolution of the country’s Jewish life. Other sessions described how Weimar culture in the inter-war years was “rich, colourful and provoking”, with Jewish

Minsk. A century later, the 1897 Minsk census showed 47,000 of the city’s 91,000 inhabitants were Jewish. Last Thursday and Friday’s Litvak Klezmer Festival brought in musicians from the United States, Germany, Poland, Ukraine and Aus-

tria. There were also dance classes, exhibitions and “an extensive food court”. In recent years, the city has sought to highlight its Jewish heritage with new tours and services, including from genealogists helping families trace their Jewish roots.

A senior imam has attended a Holocaust commemoration event in Sweden for the first time. Salahuddin Barakat, who founded a large Islamic centre in the city of Malmo, joined the Jewish community in commemorating the Kristallnacht pogrom. Observers hope it will help ease tensions in the city after a series of incidents.

A Holocaust museum in Luxembourg has cancelled a debate on the extent to which Israel’s supporters have abused a new definition of antisemitism. The event was due to take place today at the National Museum of Resistance. Critics of the definition accused the Jewish community of forcing the cancellation.

Players from one of Brazil’s top football teams wore shirts with an embroidered Star of David in a top-flight match to commemorate the 81-year anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom in Nazi Germany. The Corinthians team wore the statement kit during their match against Fortaleza at the Maracana Stadium in Rio.

ISRAELIS VISIT KIEV FOR TECH SUMMIT Hundreds of Israelis from the world of technology descended on the Ukrainian capital Kiev last week, bringing together investors and start-ups over three days. The Ukrainian Israeli Innovation Summit featured more than 70 companies and 600 participants as speakers discussed Israeli-Ukrainian cooperation as well as ways in which technology can solve modern-day problems.

Of particular interest was a focus on the disruption technological innovation is foisting on the transport and mobility sector, and the way artificial intelligence and machinelearning is changing industries. Speakers included venture capitalists, industry leaders and government representatives, including Israel’s chief scientist, Dr Ami Appelbaum (pictured).

Former far-right activist takes remembrance role A former activist of a farright nationalist organisation has been appointed to lead Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance, which houses state documents detailing wartime crimes against Jews. Tomasz Greniuch, a former brigade leader of the ONR (National Radical Camp) organisation, was appointed to head the institute in Opole. Before the war, ONR was

an antisemitic organisation, advocating a boycott of Jewish shops and the expulsion of Jews from the country and this led to it being banned afterwards, but Greniuch said he had since been “self-educated”. Institute president Jaroslaw Szarek said last week: “We particularly understand the pain of the Jewish people, since we were victims of German totalitarianism.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS

Our way of saying thank you, Britain This Sunday, thousands of people will gather at Horse Guards’ Parade in Whitehall in memory of Jews who fell fighting for this country. Some 300 Jewish soldiers died in the First World War and 75,000 served in the Second World War, but the The Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women (AJEX) routinely emphasises how Jews have been serving the sovereign for more than 300 years. Up to 2,000 Jewish veterans and armed forces personnel are expected to be joined by schools, community organisations and youth groups from across the country, as well as the Jewish Police Association and families and supporters. Even if you are one of the fortunate ones who did not lose a relative in the world wars of the last century or the conflicts since, Sunday’s powerful and deeply evocative event offers a chance to reflect on the sacrifices of fellow Jews who gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms we do. We live in an age where politics and opinions have never been more bitterly divided, but on one thing we can all agree – the immeasurable debt we owe these soldiers. As AJEX chair Mike Bluestone movingly put it this week: “Antisemitism is on the rise here, in Europe and the US, so it is once again important that we fly the flag and show that we did serve loyally, we paid the price and continue to serve today. It’s our way of saying thank you to this country.”

MP’S MOVE IS Stop this bias OPPORTUNIST for Lib Dems I will vote for Mike Freer, who is a good constituency MP and a friend to the Jewish community. Luciana Berger is a fine woman and has suffered badly at the hands of the Labour Party, but I cannot support her joining the Lib Dems, who have a poor record on handling antisemitism and have been hostile to Israel. Her move to this constituency smacks of opportunism. Whether you are pro- or anti-Brexit, there is a risk that voting for the Lib Dems will let Corbyn in. That will mean comparisons to 1930s Germany will not seem out of place.

I read your paper each week, and each and every week, in my view and that of my friends, you are biased in the way you report the election in Finchley and Golders Green in favour of the Liberal Democrats. This seat is a true Conservative/Labour marginal. One only has to see that when Lib Dems get extra votes from our community owing to their candidate, it hands seats to Labour. As a paper you need to be fair, but you will have egg on your face if Corbyn’s candidate wins this seat.

Why this Gaza conflict is different from others JAMES SORENE

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, BICOM

H

undreds of rockets were fired at Israel, schools and businesses shut and Israelis fled to air raid shelters. In response, the Israeli Defense Forces bombed military targets in Gaza. All horribly familiar to observers of Israel’s long war with Gaza since it withdrew from the territory in 2005. Only this time, it’s different. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), not Hamas, is firing all the rockets, in response to Israel killing one of its leaders, Baha Abu al-Atta, earlier this week. Israel and Hamas were recently edging closer to a long-term ceasefire deal, mediated by the UN and Egypt, to improve conditions in Gaza by easing restrictions on the import of goods and fuel. Hamas hasn’t changed its ideology or reduced its military capability, but it does appear to have altered its intent, deciding that a major conflict with Israel is not currently in its interests. Hamas wants to lead the Palestinian national movement, to do that it must end its

bitter conflict with the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. The ceasefire deal was an opportunity to improve its woeful record ruling Gaza and providing basic services to 1.8m Gazans. To win more political power, it is even prepared to take part in elections held by the Palestinian Authority next year. Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is more radical than Hamas and, despite Egyptian attempts to secure its support, opposed the ceasefire and for months has continued rocket and shooting attacks against Israel and Israeli forces on the Israel-Gaza border. Abu al-Atta

NEITHER PIJ NOR ISRAEL APPEAR TO WANT AN ESCALATION, BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT WON’T HAPPEN

was the driving force behind much of this activity and Israeli intelligence have been closely monitoring him for months. The Israeli Chief of Staff ,Aviv Kochavi, said the decision to target Abu al-Atta was taken because he was planning a series of large-scale attacks against Israel in the days ahead. PIJ is smaller than Hamas, but has thousands of rockets in its arsenal and 15,000 heavily armed fighters at its disposal. Hamas and PIJ receive finance and weapons from Iran, but PIJ has a closer relationship. Abu al-Atta had strong links with senior Iranian personnel and, as a result, his recent strategy to intensify attacks against Israel has been interpreted as part of a wider Iranian plan to pressure Israel on multiple fronts. In a significant departure from usual policy, Israel has responded to the rocket attacks by only hitting PIJ military sites and PIJ fighters firing rockets. Usually it also attacks Hamas sites, holding it responsible as the ruler of Gaza. This is a recognition by Israel of Hamas’ dilemma; by leaving its bases untouched, Israel is signalling for Hamas to stay out of the fight. Hamas will be under immense pressure from PIJ and more

radical groups to begin its own rocket attacks, and if Israeli strikes cause civilian casualties it may feel it has no choice. Neither PIJ nor Israel appear to want an escalation into a wider and more destructive conflict, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. PIJ may be content to declare it has avenged the death of Abu al-Atta and won more support in Gaza by taking the fight directly to Israel when Hamas appears reticent to do so. For Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli military and intelligence chiefs, the primary goal was to weaken PIJ and prevent a wave of impending terrorist attacks they calculated would be far more dangerous than the fallout from killing Abu al-Atta. Netanyahu this week appointed Naftali Bennett as Defence Minister and ensured Benny Gantz was kept updated with security briefings. His intent was to bind them in to current policy, which they have both heavily criticised. The bizarre reality is that for all his tough talk, Netanyahu has quietly pursued a wide-ranging deal with Hamas and it was PIJ that decided to take action to destroy it.

AI’s ethical, social and Jewish implications RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER

SENIOR RABBI, REFORM JUDAISM

A

rtificial Intelligence (AI) is the most important ethical issue of our age. It already impacts on so much of our social interactions and work-life patterns. It’s certain that it will continue to play an ever-increasing role in all our lives. Last year, Facebook claimed it would be able to predict when we will die, along with other key life events, from marriages to deaths, based on social media activity. As Jews, we should query the benefits and pitfalls of social media platforms and other data harvesting behemoths soon having these capabilities. It’s encouraging that some leading international data scientists are now keen to engage with philosophers and faith leaders as they start to deal with the ethical issues raised by AI. They know that people involved in faith have had thousands of years of practice discussing issues such as AI, which are hard to

define but have a great impact on humanity. Ethical subjects ranging from war to the meaning of humanity and consciousness can be tackled by both religious leaders and scientists in a mutually beneficial relationship. For instance, London is the city with the second highest level of surveillance in the world, behind Beijing, meaning that every Londoner is caught on CCTV approximately 300 times a day. What would Jewish teachings say about the ethical way to use all the data collected? The Talmud used the phrase puk chazi, meaning “go look at what is in the marketplace”, to emphasise that listening to what people are thinking, feeling and saying is an important step

IN AFRICA, LEARNING ABOUT THE POWER OF DATA IS USED FOR VITAL ISSUES EG WATER SUPPLY

in writing laws that reflect the nature of society. Analysing people’s behaviours from social media creates a dilemma – while it’s useful knowing how people react to new information and misinformation, the 280 characters of a tweet can never tell the full story, and may completely skew the truth. If we extrapolate only from social media, at best we lose information and nuance and, at worst, we cause damage that cannot be undone as the online data is available forever. Further questions arise – if someone posts a photo of themselves smoking when they have claimed to be a non-smoker on their health insurance, should the social media platform share that with the insurer? Would it be right for the person’s premiums to increase as a result? I recently attended Data Science Africa in Ghana to better understand these issues. Africa is a place where learning about the power of data is used for vital issues such as water supply, climate change, agriculture and life-threatening illnesses including malaria. Learning about the use of AI in Africa is increasingly pertinent, as demographic shifts mean a significant part of

world population growth in the coming decades will come from Africa – within 15 years, one in four will live on the continent. Mustafa, who runs the new Google AI Lab in Ghana explained this by telling me that as a 34-year-old, he is older than 70 percent of Sub-Saharan Africa. Learning from Africa is vital as many of the problems already being encountered in regions of Africa will become the whole world’s problems as the climate crisis worsens. The solutions to extreme heat and water scarcity being developed in Ghana can be replicated worldwide. This might seem remote, but data is already hugely important to our ability to lead a Jewish life in safety in the UK. If a synagogue’s database were hacked by a far-right group, its members could be in severe danger. Our security is now dependent on our cyber security. We cannot switch off from the issue. We need to learn to understand it, get involved in it and impact on it. Just as we see a role for ourselves as Jews in medicine, law and a vast array of disciplines so, too, should we seek an active role in data science. If it affects us day-to-day, we can’t just delegate it to others.

never gave liquorice much thought until I met Victoria. This lady, now in her 80s, had lived in Iran until 1979. Her late husband’s business was to harvest the roots of the liquorice plants which proliferate naturally near the town of Kermanshah, and to sell the liquorice for food processing, tobacco or for its medicinal properties. As soon as the Shah was deposed and the Islamic Republic of Iran declared, Victoria’s husband lost no time in bundling his family out of the country. Israel had been a major client. Under the Shah, Iran had good relations with the Jewish state. After the Islamic revolution, Israel became the ‘Little Satan’ (the regime considers the US – whose diplomats were taken hostage for 444 days in November 1979 – the ‘Great Satan). Iran is racing to develop nuclear weapons to dominate the region. It denies the Holocaust and regularly declares its intention to

wipe out the Jewish state. Together with its proxies Islamic Jihad, Hamas and Hezbollah, it presents the greatest physical threat to Israel. Victoria and her family abandoned their house and their business. They caught a plane to London. She was just one of the 80,000 Jews who made their escape from Iran, many migrating to the US, the UK or Israel. Thousands of others became hostages. Desperate parents sent 1,800 lone children to safety in the US. Jews risked their lives to be smuggled out over the Pakistani border. The route was treacherous, and several disappeared without trace. Forty Jews have lost their lives to the

IRAN’S JEWS HAVE FEWER RIGHTS THAN MUSLIMS AND ARE BARRED FROM TOP GOVERNMENT ROLES

regime. The wealthy businessman Habib Elghanian was executed as an example to the terrified community. For decades the regime has been dispatching its enemies to Evin prison . Into a cell 4ft by 10ft, shared by 10 prisoners with two blankets between them, was flung a Jewish manufacturer of brake linings, Joseph Koukou. Greedy employees denounced Koukou as a Zionist spy. Every day inmates would be randomly executed. Koukou was lucky to get out alive after serving five years in jail. Victoria knows of no refugee from the Islamic regime – Jewish or non-Jewish – who has received compensation. In London, she went to the Iranian embassy to register the family’s lost assets. Their house was now a police station, but the thought of turning up on the doorstep to order the policemen out was improbable. The remaining 8,000 Jews are ostensibly free to practise their religion, but any link with Israel is taboo. The secret police controls what the community says. To its credit, the regime has not encouraged

popular violence against Jews, although there have been isolated incidents. Jews in Iran have fewer rights than Muslims, are subject to unfair inheritance laws and debarred from the upper echelons of government, the army and politics – except for one token Jewish MP. Unlike their rulers, the Iranian people are generally thought of as open-minded and pro-western. Victoria had nothing but pleasant memories of life under the Shah. But Jews have suffered pogroms and forced conversions during their 3,000-year old history. Ultimately, individuals pay the price for political upheaval and intolerance: Every year on or around 30 November , we commemorate the exodus of Jews from Arab countries and Iran. On the 40th anniversary of the Islamic revolution, let’s not forget the innocent victims of this antisemitic and brutal regime.  Harif (www.harif.org) and the S&P Sephardi Community will be holding a Jewish Refugee Day event on 30 November. Two witnesses to the devastation of Kristallnacht shared their testimonies on the anniversary of the November pogrom at the Prestwich Hebrew Congregation in Manchester during an event organised by the Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR). The pogrom led Renee Mosbacher, pictured with AJR’s Dr Bea Lewkowicz, to leave Vienna together with her family in December 1938, while Ruth Edwards was sent on a train for the UK to relatives in February 1939. AJR’s chief executive Michael Newman, who spoke at the event, said: “We place great effort on ensuring that key dates in the Jewish calendar, like the anniversary of the Kristallnacht, are remembered.”

100-SECOND INTERVIEW Celebrating our community’s centenarians... I remarried and moved to Ilford in the 1980s. I now live in Redbridge and I’ve enjoyed going to the monthly Jewish Care tea party in Redbridge for the past year or so. We have some tea and cake in people’s homes. They made me a lovely tea for my 100th birthday.

DINNER GIFTS

More than 120 guests helped to raise £4,500 at a dinner for Jewish Care to buy Chanukah presents for residents of its Rosetrees care home in Friern Barnet and to buy specialist equipment for tenants. Mazeltov! Alf Collis Name: Alf Collis Date of birth: 1919 Place of birth: London’s East

End

Where do you live? How long have you lived there? Where did you live before?

I grew up in Stamford Hill and moved to Stoke Newington. Later, I married Isabel Simmons on 31 December 1941 in East London and we were happily married for 42 years. I moved back to Stamford Hill after my wife passed away.

What was your occupation before retirement?

I had a removals and haulage company called Collis Transport. It was my dad’s business and I started driving the lorries at 14. During the war I served in the army for six years, first in the Royal Tank Corps in the army as a driver among other jobs and later I was attached to the Royal Pioneer Corps. One of my jobs was driving those killed in action away from the battlefields. After the war, I went back to Collis Transport and used to work seven days and six nights a week and I had the company until 1965. Then I started my own car hire company with my drivers. I love doing all my own

repairs on cars and other things too. I find things to keep me busy. I didn’t stop driving until I was 94, when I decided it was time to give up my licence and I worked well into my 80s. Were you married? If so for how long. To whom?

I had three wives. They were all darlings and they sadly passed away. How many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren do you have?

I have two children, my son Jeff Collis and daughter Lindy Medway. I have seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren aged between nought and 27. At home, we never argued. We look after each other. I’d do anything for my children, I really would. I idolise them and they and my grandchildren come and visit me and listen to what I have to say about current affairs.

What is your happiest memory?

I’ve always been happy, but I had the most wonderful wife, Isabel. It makes me happy when I look at her photo. We had our son and daughter together. What do you consider to be your greatest/ proudest achievement?

Driving and repairing vehicles. I’m very proud of my work. If you could offer a piece of advice to today’s youngsters, what would it be?

Never give up. I’m a fighter. I won’t give up on anything. I’ve always been like that. And think about other people. The secret for a long life is… to keep working and to help people. I’ve always tried to help people. • Do you know a centenarian who deserves their own 100-Second Interview? Email editorial@ thejngroup.com

CREATE A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR JEWISH CHILDREN By remembering Jewish Child’s Day in your will, the vulnerable, neglected or disadvantaged children of today will have their hopes for a brighter future reignited. Through our work with partner organisations, Jewish Child’s Day is currently changing the lives of thousands of children in Israel, in Eastern Europe and here in the UK. We believe that every child deserves a childhood which is something so many of us take for granted. However, by leaving a legacy, you could transform many children’s lives who desperately need our support. These are children who are suffering from physical, learning or emotional difficulties. At Jewish Child’s Day, we can work with donors to provide them with small, medium or large sized projects which can provide anything from educational books, hydrotherapy sessions and bespoke wheelchairs, to specialist cots for paediatric medical support, mental health programmes and snoozelen sensory rooms to renovating a family apartment in a children’s home village. The list is endless but you will know for certain that your Legacy will create a brighter future for disadvantaged Jewish children and give them what they deserve – a childhood!

LEAVE AN EXCEPTIONAL GIFT Through generous legacies, Jewish Child’s Day, has been able to launch an Exceptional Grants process. This initiative only commenced in early 2019 which has allowed us to award sums over and above our standard grant application limits. Receiving legacies like these has enabled Jewish Child’s Day to fund an accessible room at a residential organisation so that special needs children can too benefit from a weekend away just like their friends. A further exceptional grant was awarded to a school for their ENGAGE (Enrich, Nurture, Grow, Achieve, Generate, Endeavour) programme. This has allowed them to proceed with a curriculum-based learning hub which breaks down barriers to learning. The programme teaches life skills, cookery, gardening and education through play in a calm and nurturing environment. Jewish Child’s Day has also been able to donate funds towards therapy suites for autistic children to receive occupational therapy, speech and drama therapy workshops. As we are all too aware, there is a mental health crisis facing our children. We have awarded a grant recently which will enable a school to run a programme for three years to teach the children about resilience and how to process their feelings in the face of adversity, whether it be at school or home. We, as a charity helping Jewish children in need, are extremely proud of our fledgling Exceptional Grants.

Leaving a Legacy to Jewish Child’s Day will last a lifetime, so please let us know if you would like our Legacy pack with more information. Please contact: simona.kenton@jcd.uk.com or call the office on 020 8446 8804.

Toby Levy Celebration Caterers Her adored grandfather was a tailor, but that didn’t stop Beverley Bersch naming her catering company after him. She wanted to honour his memory as she made her own mark in the world of catering, and what a mark it was. From MPs and royalty to celebrities and Holocaust survivors, Toby Levy Catering has catered to all walks of society over the past 30 years and Beverley continues to add more venues and more clients to an already impressve list. There are no industrial kitchens or pre-prepared dishes – all the food is created and cooked on the day. Hired to cater for 1,200 attendees at a Holocaust Memorial Day event hosted by Theresa May meant the team of 40-plus were in situ at Westminster Hall at 5am, and have catered for 300 people at a wedding at The Langham – all freshly prepared in the hotel’s kitchens. Alongside being the designated kosher caterer at the House of Commons, the House of Lords, Clarence House, St James’s Palace and Lambeth Palace, Toby Levy works at most of London’s five-star hotels, and all kinds of other venues. The range of dishes and menus is vast, but it’s all authentic. She has in-house printing, lighting and floristry services and props for theming and can source all other elements needed for a function. Toby Levy would be proud. www.tobylevy.com

The synagogue’s two main halls are available for simchas and party hire, including for engagements, bar and batmitzvahs and charity events. The venue, which can accommodate up to 180 seated guests and has disabled access, features facilities for meat and milk kosher catering. Rates include the use of tables and chairs, cloakroom facilities and caretaker, and staging can also be set up. A stone’s throw from Woodcock Park, the shul is located outside Wembley Stadium’s protective parking scheme.

Bought his first camera when he was eleven, Adam Soller grew up on a moshav in the north of Israel after his parents made aliyah. Photography was always a serious hobby but, after leaving the Israeli army, he went into sales and eventually moved back to the UK. Five years ago, he became a London cabbie and also picked up his camera. First it was shots of London, then friends and family started asking him to do shoots for them and it grew from there. As his own daughter, Aimee, was batmitzvah three years ago, Adam understands what a celebrating family feels like, and he goes to great lengths to keep things calm and relaxed. Good planning and a hands-on approach, plus the willingness to help out has had him fixing table centres and even driving the family to the venue in his taxi. You’ll be in safe hands with him.

Whittlebury Park

Roll Me Up

Celebrate your private functions in the heart of the English countryside at Whittlebury Park, a 700 acre estate in Northamptonshire surrounded by woodland, lakes and gardens. Its three venues include a traditional building surrounded by oak trees, with old-stone floors and a sweeping staircase, a light-coloured marquee with seating for up to 200 people, and a 400-seat country building with views of the park.

Watch husband and wife team Jason and Oi make their exquisite ice cream rolls on their website and it will push you towards inviting them to your party. Your guests will thank you as the creation of the rolls is fascinating with a tasty grand finale. The couple were living in Thailand – where ice cream rolls are a street food tradition – and decided to bring them to the UK, after sourcing the essential hot plate machines on which to make them. With many years in hospitality, a quality product was the first thing they had to achieve and living in the Cotswolds gave them access to the best local ice creams. After lots of chopping and tasting, they put their own slant on the Thai favourite and now Roll Me Up adds a unique and fascinating dimension to any event, no matter the weather.

Special Report

The Labour we’ve lost Next year marks the centenary of the Jewish Labour Movement’s affiliation with the Labour Party. Mathilde Frot looks at the rich legacy of Jewish support for the left in the context of the historical sympathies of working class Jews and how it has been tragically undermined by the current leadership Next year is the centenary of the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM)’s affiliation with the party. But rather than prepare for a celebration, many in the community fear the prospect of a Jeremy Corbyn government. The JLM, which helped to found the Labour Party, said it would not campaign for candidates “unless in exceptional circumstances”. Meanwhile, looming large on the horizon, a verdict on whether the party is institutionally antisemitic is expected from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission early next year. It is a remarkable indictment for a party that boasts a rich legacy of Jewish support intertwined with Poale Zion, as the JLM was once called. Poale Zion emerged from Jewish trade unions and a flourishing political scene that featured a flurry of working men’s clubs, debating societies and English and Yiddish language newspapers in London’s East End. It played a pivotal role in the Labour Party’s commitment to a Jewish national home laid out in its War Aims Memorandum published in August 1917. “Throughout its 99-year history, Poale Zion and Jewish Labour activists have been become members of Parliament, civic leaders and councillors,” said Jewish Labour Movement national secretary Peter Mason. “They’ve become ingrained in the fabric of the Labour of Party that always believed in equality, social justice and the rights of minorities.” He added: “We’re now in a situation that 99 years on from those earliest moments of people like Ben Gurion coming to Britain to build the British socialist Zionist tradition that the Labour Party that used to represent us has now allowed itself to be captured by this intolerable populist, antisemitic hard left tradition. All of that’s been put in jeopardy,” Miriam Mirwitch, 26, from London, joined the Labour Party at 16 in response to what she saw as the corrosive impact of austerity measures on her community. “I got really angry about it. I wanted to make a change and I thought that the best way to create that change was to get involved in the Labour movement,” she said. Mirwitch, who

Jewish Labour Movement members recall Cable Street. Left, pamphlets from the early days of the movement. Below: Dr Hugh Dalton MP speaks at a Poale Zion meeting

serves on the Jewish Labour Movement’s national executive committee, hailed the “proud history of Jewish Labour activists,” citing the example of MPs Emanuel (Manny) Shinwell and Ruth Smeeth. Over recent years, the activist found “a tension between being Jewish and being a Labour Party activist” and has received online abuse, including messages containing antisemitic tropes and threats and “very very nasty replies” on social media. “All of us have experienced antisemitic comments at local meetings, and obviously I firmly believe it is a minority who are like this but the issue is that it’s very present in the structures of the party and that’s what makes it institutional,” she said. But Mirwitch, who identified as a “stayfighter,” added: “We need to stay involved in the Labour Party and speaking out if you can because if you leave there’s no one left to speak out against antisemitism, but I also have a huge amount of respect for people who decided that they had to leave.” Community involvement in the Labour Party rose in the wake of mass migration from Eastern Europe from 1870 and waning support for the Liberal Party, a party once regarded by many as the natural home of British Jews. Dr Ben Gidley, senior lecturer at Birkbeck and an associate of the Pears Institute,

said: “In the interwar years, particularly in places such as the East End of London, there were many Jewish activists in the Communist Party and in the Labour Party, although many Jews still continued to vote for Liberals out of an older loyalty. Within those workingclass communities where there were a lot of Jews, the garment industry in particular, but also cabinet makers, the trade unions in those sectors were often attached to the Labour Party.” Since its founding in 1900, the Labour Party has enjoyed a long history of Jewish contributions, with a staggering 80 peers, 90 MPs and 33 ministers serving in Parliament, and some 19 private members’ bills put forward. “Many of them [Jewish MPs] made significant contributions to the history of the Labour Party and indeed of Britain,” said Gidley, citing Tom Myers, the first Jewish Labour MP, elected 100 years ago. Perhaps the most well-known figure was Scottish MP and peer Emanuel (Manny) Shinwell, Luciana Berger’s great-uncle, who was born to a Polish family in the East End and raised in Glasgow. He made significant contributions towards protecting workers’ rights. Serving in the House of Commons for 40 years, he rose through the ranks of the party and was appointed chairman and even minister under three Labour governments. The Labour titan served as a minister in Ramsay Macdonald and Clement Attlee’s Labour governments, and later became a member of the House of Lords. He famously crossed the floor in 1938 to slap Conservative MP Commander Robert Tatton Bower, who taunted him during a heated exchange on the Spanish Civil War and suggested that he “go back to Poland”. Another towering figure was the MP

Sydney Silverman, perhaps best remembered for leading a 30-year push for the abolition of the death penalty and bringing forward the private member’s bill in 1964 that led to a change in the law. Born to a family of drapers in Liverpool, he was elected to Parliament in 1935 and retained his seat until his death in 1968. Serving as chairman of the British arm of the World Jewish Congress, he visited Nazi camps after the Second World War and raised the plight of Jewish refugees in Parliament. Today the relationship between the Labour Party and the Jewish community appears to some to be beyond repair. But the Battle of Cable Street, often seen as an iconic historical moment allying the Jewish community with the left, offers many lessons for the party. The day entered the annals of history when thousands of anti-fascists came out on the streets of London’s East End to block Oswald Mosley’s Blackshirts march. “It’s the antisemitism they recognised that wore blackshirts,” said Gidley. “It bought into anti-fascism, but it didn’t necessarily recognise other forms of antisemitism. It didn’t know how to deal with the other faces of antisemitism.”

Torah For Today

SEDRA

What does the Torah say about:

Vayera

Running a marathon in under two hours

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL God appeared to Abraham after his circumcision to reveal a future promise. Three messengers arrived with a divine announcement: he was going to have a son by his wife Sarah. While in Sodom, the townsmen tried to force Lot to eject the messengers from his house so they could rape them. The door opened and the divine men struck the evil townspeople with blindness. Lot, his wife and daughters escaped Sodom, hurried along by the divine messengers who told them not to look back until they reached the mountain. Unfortunately, Lot’s wife looked back at the sulphur raining down on the plain of Sodom and Amorah (Gomorrah). Transfixed by the sight of her destroyed homeland, she solidified into a pillar. Lot and his daughters sought refuge in a cave. Believing the world was at an end, Lot’s daughters intoxicated him and slept with him, resulting in the births of Moab and Ammon. Isaac’s birth was shadowed by a scandal perpetrated by Abimelech, the Philistine king, who had kidnapped the beautiful Sarah before her term of pregnancy. After Isaac’s birth, the banishment of Hagar and Ishmael was followed by another trial of faith. Abraham was asked to sacrifice Isaac to God. He was tortured by this command, yet fully committed to perform it. At the moment he was about to plunge a knife into Isaac’s neck, an angel called out: “Abraham, Abraham – don’t do it.” Now God knew Abraham was willing to obey him, having proven his unwavering faith in God.

BY RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF Sixty-three years to the day that legendary Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile, Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge recently became the first person to run a 26.2-mile marathon in under two hours. So, what does the Torah say about this? Running a marathon is always a remarkable achievement, but even the most seasoned runners could not envisage such a feat – until now. When contemplating this, my thoughts immediately resonate with our own Jewish exodus from Egypt. No slaves had ever before escaped Egyptian servitude, yet a whole people marched out in their multitudes. Although the Bnei Yisrael didn’t run out of Egypt, they certainly left “in great haste” (Devarim 16:3). It was an epic journey never imagined possible until it

was achieved. It was a seminal moment in Jewish history, partly recalled almost obsessively in Jewish tradition, daily prayers and our festive cycle to bring home an important underpinning of Jewish life. The Hebrew world for Egypt, Mitzrayim, has connotations of constraints and limitations. The Israelites as slaves were considered worthless and incapable of anything

OUR MISSION OF INFUSING THE WORLD WITH GODLINESS REQUIRES US TO AIM HIGH

significant. To be a Jew is to live with the reality of Yetziat Mitzrayim, not just awareness of the exodus, but also leaving the slave mentality far behind. With the Almighty’s help, we are capable of breaking through any limitations. The entire existence of the Jewish people, a nation that has survived and indeed flourished under the most adverse conditions, is not “normal”. But we are not a nation that seeks to be “normal”. Our mission of infusing the world with godliness and goodness requires us to aim higher than we may have thought possible, both as individuals and as a people. Great achievements, be they a four-minute mile, a two-hour marathon, surviving against the odds, or building the state of Israel all seem impossible until someone steps up to defy the norm. As David Ben-Gurion said: “A Jew who does not believe in miracles is not a realist.” ◆ Rabbi Naftali Schiff is founder and chief executive of Jewish Futures

The Bible Says What? ‘Men shouldn’t shave!’

So, who’s leaving Britain if Jeremy Corbyn becomes prime minister?

BY RABBI AARON GOLDSTEIN Ever since I came across Unorthodox Podcast and their main sponsor, Harry’s shaving products, I have become unusually vain about and concerned with my facial hair. Perhaps it was studying ergonomics that made me easy prey to the marketing call of “ergonomic handle and, precision blades”. Having avoided shaving many times, it has now become a ritual of pleasure. But who knew that way before the mutton chops, chevron or goatee beard, the Torah was concerned with male facial hair? Leviticus (19:27) says: “You shall not round off the side-growth on your head, or destroy the side-growth of your beard.” One rationale for this is the separation of Israel from other peoples and particularly their idolatrous practices: The Hittites and Sumerians were thought to be clean-shaven, while Egyptians and Libyans had highlystylised goatees. Another is that such shaving used to be a mourning practice of others

and a former Israelite practice. The injunction may be linked to the verse prohibiting cutting oneself in mourning, and today many in mourning remain unshaven for 30 days. Rabbinic Judaism followed through by Chasidic Jews led to the growth of sidelocks – payot. Their style is still today at the dictate of their rebbe. From the Middle Ages on, the majority of Jewish men adopted popular local styles and today Halachic concerns are for the use of electric razors. For anyone worried about aesthetics, their looks affect how they feel. In an era of poor mental well-being, Liberal Judaism welcomes practices that compliment contentment. For men hirstutely challenged, this commandment may be unhelpful; for others part of their spiritual connection to God and community. We welcome all regardless of appearance. Meanwhile, this rabbi is staying smooth.

BY RABBI MARK GOLDSMITH What happens in our national politics always affects Jewish life, whichever party is in power. Judaism is a religion of values, concern and care for our fellow citizens, our cities, our nation, our people and the world. When a Jew considers who to vote for in the 12 December election, it is legitimate and necessary to consider which party will work constructively with the state of Israel, protect the environment, ensure there are equal opportunity and economic policies, condemn racism in all its forms and enact policies that care for the stranger and the disadvantaged, while also helping the country to be prosperous so that all can thrive. It may be that a Conservative government will act in such a way that will make many feel uncomfortable with the direction the UK is taking, that a Liberal Democrat government will radically change the direction of travel away from Europe and that a Labour government would

follow an economic course that does not meet the interests of many. There is a strong democratic choice to make at the ballot box. The country knows little about Jo Swinson, but is now very familiar with the style and personality of Boris Johnson and can have little doubt about the radicalism of Jeremy Corbyn. Would many Jews leave the UK if any of them is our prime minister after 12 December? While there is no stated existential threat to the Jewish community, we know many in our community do have a fear about a Corbyn-led Labour govern-

ment. There is a valid upset about the lackadaisical way in which antisemitism is being dealt with in the party. Recent polling suggests 47 percent of British Jews would seriously consider leaving the UK in the event of a Labour victory. However much we may personally disagree with this course of action, we must not ignore this strength of feeling. Of course, Jews must always protect the ability to live fully as a Jew in this country, our ability to choose the education we seek for our children, to remain in constructive relationship with Israel, to practice our religion and build our communities in safety. But we must also vote for those values we share with the whole of the country for its good in the future. We are not ready to give up on the UK.  Rabbi Mark Goldsmith serves Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue

‘BREXIT WILL MAKE IT HARD TO FIND CARE WORKERS’

T

The tech-for-good sector has grown exponentially in recent years. According to Tech Nation, last year there were 490 social good firms in the UK, valued at £2.3bn and set to increase as companies realise the power of technology to accelerate positive social change. Over the coming weeks, business editor Candice Krieger will profile enterprises with a common objective at their core: making a positive impact. First up: SuperCarers

Tech4Good

he UK’s ageing population is increasing and so are fears about spiralling care bills. With the number of over-85s in the UK predicted to double within the next 25 years and the percentage of those aged over 65 predicted to jump to nearly a quarter of the population by 2045, relatives are taking on caring responsibilities themselves to cut care costs. But it’s at the expense of their career. According to research released in October by insurance giant Aviva, one-in-five mid-life employees will retire early to look after adult family members. And while more than 2.6 million employees aged 45 and over expect they will have to leave their jobs to care for a relative or partner, with men almost as likely as women to stop working to do so, only six percent of employers see caring pressures as a significant issue faced by their employees. But doing its bit to revolutionise how we can support the ageing population and their families is SuperCarers. Founded by brothers Adam and Daniel Pike, SuperCarers was established as a kind of dating site for care. The online platform provides a matchmaking service where families can find trusted carers to care for their elderly loved ones at home. “We match people on a personal basis,” explains Daniel. “We are trying to put the compassion and relationships back into care.” Founded in 2015, the business continues to evolve as it innovates in what is a complex sector inflamed by a growth in demand and shortage of provision. And Pike points out that people are tackling care when they are at crisis point with little understanding of what the best options are. “We need to think differently.” SuperCarers has recently announced a pilot partnership with Aviva to help its workforce navigate the care landscape. Aviva’s UK workforce will be entitled to a number of hours of paid leave to care for an elderly relative and have access to SuperCarers’ services. This includes a ‘care coach’ call with an expert to help to navigate them through their care journey. If they require care services, SuperCarers will match them with a private carer through their network, or one of their partner agencies.

The brothers set up SuperCarers having watched their mother struggle to find good enough care for their grandmother. “My mum didn’t know what to do with her mum,” recalls Daniel. “She was volunteering for the Middlesex New Synagogue (now Mosaic Reform) but had to stop to become her full-time carer. The right care options in the community were not available. And because my grandma had dementia she couldn’t have an agency that sent different carers all the time as this would be disturbing. My mum couldn’t find the right solution.” Adam, 34, was working as a policy adviser in the Cabinet Office and Treasury, on secondment from Deloitte, at the time. He dealt with policy that focused on improving care for an ageing population. While Daniel, 32, was an accountant at PwC. They invested their house deposits to get it started. They have since raised £5.6million in funding including from the founders of Innocent Smoothie via their JamJar Investment Fund (other investments include Deliveroo, Graze and Babylon Health). Last year they secured a £3.8million investment round led by VCT Mobeus Equity Partners and Seneca Partners. Other supporters include Richard Frank, co-founder of Dial-a-Phone. The company boasts an impressive advisory board, chaired by former Care Quality Commission Strategy Director Alan Rosenbach. The company has been listed as a Forbes’ Top 5 Startup To Watch in 2019 and a Health Investor finalist. Other accolades include The Sunday Times Top 100 British Innovators and Seedrs Alumni Awards. Despite some startling statistics, Daniel says that the scale of the care crisis is not any more acute than a few years ago. “This issue hasn’t become bigger – it has been as big an issue for some time – but it has become bigger in the public consciousness. “It’s a question of political will that hasn’t been addressed. The first person who introduced it as a hot topic, for all her faults, was Theresa May, with this long-awaited Green Paper, to discuss how to address the challenge of the ageing population.” Through the use of smart technology, and working with experienced care professionals, SuperCarers bypasses the need for an agency middle-man. This results in sizeable savings for customers and carers can earn more than the industry average. Live-in care is the company’s fastest growing provision. For day and night care it covers London and Greater London, rolling out to other UK cities including Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Bourne-

mouth and home counties. The company is growing at around seven percent month-on-month and provides more than 30,000 hours of monthly care, servicing some 800 clients. But growth at all costs is not the model for the business. “We are dealing with something that is incredibly sensitive. The biggest challenge is building the business in the right way while trying to grow and not putting people at risk.” Daniel says the sceptics will question the scalability. “It’s not a technology company, it’s a tech-enabled service – we use tech to reduce those overhead costs and operate as efficiently as possible but fundamentally it comes down to humans who will be delivering the service. And that’s why we can’t have a million customers tomorrow.” The brothers are passionate about running a business with a positive social impact. “What

we do every day makes a massive difference. We have tough days but then we have good feedback (their Excellent Rating Trust Pilot Reviews hang in their offices) and it makes it worthwhile. “And the ethos of the business has have helped to attract first-class people. If you ask us why we are successful it’s because we’ve been able to hire people smarter than us. If we didn’t have the social purpose, we have we wouldn’t have been able to afford them. They choose us because of the business and the social impact.” So what’s the five-year plan? “Focus, focus, focus. Doing more work with partners and large corporates, who are realising they need to support their employees. “We want to engage people in advanced-needs planning, instead of people coming to us in crisis.” He says: “It’s a complex journey and you need someone to hold your hand through it.”

Can I recover the cost of repairing the damaged drive, or minor alterations aimed at reducing the cost of future claims, for example raising the position of electrical sockets and repairing using waterproof plaster? Kevin Dear Kevin Insurance against damage

to a drive or boundary wall needs to be expressly covered in the policy. Provided your coverage is on a ‘new for old’ basis, it should be possible to negotiate with insurers so they will at least contribute to the costs of bringing a building up to current standards of flood resilience. Join Altermans Solicitors as a Consultant Over the last three years, six of us have joined Altermans as consultants – to work in property, company commercial, litigation, private client and family law. All of us have been partners elsewhere, and know the pain of running a team, hitting chargeable targets and driving revenue. However, each of us knew deep down that what we wanted to do was find somewhere where we could work for our clients in a friendly and supportive environment. We found it at Altermans in Finchley, North London. The firm is run by Gabriel Alterman, who is growing a business where lawyers can work on their own or build a small team that meets their needs. The firm is not a “virtual network”. We work together, talk together and respect each other’s expertise. We share fees, reward each other for referrals, and have regular gatherings – both social and work – to make sure we’re on track. If this sounds like a firm where you could find a niche and be at home, get in touch to arrange a chat and come and meet us. There’s no management-speak; just lawyers working together. You can contact Gabriel directly at gabriel@altermans.co.uk or by phone on 07794 085 617. Our website is at www.altermans.co.uk for more details of the firm.
