Jewish News 21 November 2019

This General Election has provoked the most interest and concern that I can ever recall from the Jewish community. There is no getting around the fact that antisemitism will be a central election issue for many, if not most, in the Jewish community. Labour’s handling of antisemitism over the last few years has rightly come under intense scrutiny, and all indications are that many Jews will be voting according to their judgement of how Labour has performed on the issue. It is an absolute travesty in this day and age, that antisemitism should be an issue which British Jews feel they need to take into account at the ballot box, often over and above their broader social and economic views, and for many, over their views of what is no doubt a major issue of the day: Brexit. That being said, of course there are other issues which Jews, as Jews, will be considering in this election: whether that’s the parties’ positions on Israel, on Jewish schools, on fundamental Jewish freedoms like shechita or circumcision, or indeed on wider issues of concern to society, like welfare, immigration, climate change and hate crime against different groups. And of course, the Jewish community is equally concerned about the other great issues of the day. We want to play a full part in all aspects of society. The Board of Deputies of British Jews has this week released its Jewish Manifesto which sets out what we understand to be the key concerns of the Jewish community. Of course, where there are two Jews, there are three opinions, and not every Jew will agree with every word written, but we hope that most Jews will agree with most of the points we have included. We have sent the Jewish Manifesto to candidates contesting the election to inform them of our priorities. We have also made it widely available to the Jewish community, to empower the UK’s Jews to challenge and question candidates of all parties on their views. We would encourage all members of the Jewish community to engage proactively in the election. Reach out to candidates and ask them to support the Jewish Manifesto’s ‘Ten Commitments’, which you will find on the back cover of this newspaper. Please consider attending local Jewish community hustings meetings, advertised on the inside back page of this newspaper, so that you can hear the candidates and probe their views. Finally, and most importantly, please make sure that you are registered to vote, and that you use your vote. The deadline to register to vote is 11:59 this coming Tuesday 26 November. For those who have different possible addresses from which to register, including students, you may wish to consider which constituency is most likely to be affected by your vote, and register there. You can register to vote at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. At this crucial time for our community, I urge you to engage fully in the election, to consider carefully the different policies and to vote for the candidates and parties that best represent your interests.

Church’s mea culpa Historic report urges Christians to ‘repent’ for antisemitism
A landmark Church of England report calling on Christians to “repent” for historic antisemitism and reset JewishChristian relations received a mixed reaction from Jewish leaders this week, writes Jack Mendel. Corbyn accused of lying over Labour antisemitism cases Jeremy Corbyn was accused of lying on national television this week, after claiming “every single case” of anti-Jewish racism in his party has been dealt with – despite “thousands” remaining unresolved, writes Jack Mendel. The Labour leader came in for criticism during Tuesday night’s televised leaders’ debate, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson branding his handling of the antisemitism row a “complete failure of leadership”. Corbyn responded, saying antisemitism was “an absolute evil and scourge within our society”, and insisted the party treated the issue “very, very seriously”. “I have taken action in my party where anyone who has committed any antisemitic acts or made any antisemitic statements, they [were] either suspended or expelled from the party and investigated every single case.” The National Secretary of the Jewish Labour Movement, Peter Mason, tweeted the clip of Corbyn making this claim, saying: “This is a lie. There are at least 130 outstanding antisemitism cases, some dating back years, that still haven’t been dealt with. The party haven’t bothered to investigate the cases properly or make deci-

That is within the processes of the Labour Party. “What I do know is that the Labour Party has a strong, robust system for dealing with issues of any form of racism and any form of complaints. “If Jeremy Corbyn has been informed by the general secretary that all the cases have been dealt with in some way – then absolutely he is right to say that is the case because I’m sure that’s what he’s been informed.” Mason later accused the party of “hiding behind confidentiality”. Labour is currently under investigation by the EHRC over claims of institutional antisemitism. It is expected to deliver its verdict as early as January – making it the second party to be probed by the watchdog after the British National Party.

General Election 2019 / News NEWS IN BRIEF
LABOUR HITS BACK AT PUBLIC FIGURES Labour has rejected the claim of 24 public figures who said they won’t vote for the party because its leader has “a long record of embracing antisemites as comrades” – saying “several” have been accused of ”antisemitism, Islamophobia and misogyny”. John le Carré, Maajid Nawaz and Joanna Lumley are among those who signed a letter to the Guardian, which said: “To ignore [antisemitism] is to declare that anti-Jewish prejudice is a price worth paying for a Labour government.”
MARGOLYES GIVES BACKING TO CORBYN Miriam Margolyes has said Labour’s backing for the National Health Service is more important than antisemitism or Brexit. At the launch of the new series of the BBC’s Call The Midwife, the Jewish actress said: “No party is perfect, but Corbyn is a man of principle. But Boris Johnson again and again has shown that he is not.” She added: “I think antisemitism is throughout the English political system. I don’t think Labour have a monopoly on antisemitism.”
Backslap for saying Jews are ‘immoral’ Footage has emerged showing the Labour leader giving a pat on the back to a speaker who told a crowd that supporting Israel made Jews “immoral”, writes Mathilde Frot. The video, taken during a Palestine Solidarity Campaign rally in 2008, was uncovered by website The Red Roar. It shows Jeremy Corbyn standing behind Ismail Patel, chair of the campaign Friends of Al-Aqsa, while he made Jeremy Corbyn patted the speaker on the back
the comments and give him a pat on the back as he left the stage. In the video, Patel can be heard telling the crowd: “We see the impact of Zionism on Palestinians, but it has had a devastating effect on the Jewish community itself – it has made them immoral in justice. “How can you have a community that can celebrate 60 years of dispossession? How can you have a community that celebrates the killings of innocent Pal-

estinian people? “This is what Zionism has done to Judaic faith.” Moments later, Patel said the group Jews for Justice [for Palestinians] and the ultra-orthodox anti-Zionist Neturei Karta had “gone above Zionism and seen Zionism for what it is”. A spokesperson for the Jewish Labour Movement said: “A real lifelong antiracist would’ve said something to challenge those speakers spouting deeply antisemitic views. Instead he was a bystander – he watched and did nothing.” A Labour spokesperson said: “Jeremy Corbyn has a long and principled record of solidarity with the Palestinian people and [supporting] peace and justice, with a secure Israel alongside a secure and viable Palestinian state.”
HARLOW HOPEFUL GRILLED Labour’s candidate for Harlow told an audience member to “think for yourself” after he asked if Jeremy Corbyn is “fit to keep our country safe and secure” in light of his views on Hamas and Hezbollah. Laura McAlpine was joined by fellow candidates Charlotte Cane (Liberal Democrat) and Robert Halfon (Conservative) at an election hustings in Harlow on 18 November. The audience member’s question referred to Corbyn’s
use of the phrase “our friends” to refer to members of the terror groups Hezbollah and Hamas during a meeting in parliament in 2009 before he became Labour leader. Earlier this month, McAlpine defended chief campaigner Brett Hawksbee after he wrote about a “Jewish final solution,” despite one party official warning he had broken the IHRA definition “in almost every single way possible”.
Anti-Boris ‘solidarity’ A group of left-wing Jews descended on the prime minister’s west London constituency to help the Labour candidate unseat him. Thirty people from Jews Against Boris went door-knocking on Sunday for Labour’s Ali Milani in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Milani needs a five percent swing to win after Johnson’s majority was halved in 2017. Rivkah Brown, one of the canvassers, said: “Boris
Johnson has incited a hateful and divisive politics that endangers all marginalised people. “That is why being part of a group of British Jews who show solidarity with other communities is so important at this election.”

General Election 2019 / The battle for Hendon
Knock, knock, knocking on H by Jack Mendel @mendelpol
Tucking into falafel at Hendon Park Cafe, Conservative candidate Matthew Offord tells me his favourite Jewish food is “anything with chickpeas. I’m obsessed by hummus!” It’s a rare moment of relaxation for the 50-year-old incumbent, who knows he is in the political fight of his career to retain his Hendon seat, after a narrow victory by 1,072 votes in 2017. Unlike his hummus, Offord is hoping his popularity won’t dip. He is acutely aware that many former Labour voters now face a stark choice between Brexitbacking Tories and Remain-backing Lib Dems (Indeed, 62 percent of Barnet voted Remain). Offord says this election will “hinge on antisemitism” for Jewish voters, not Brexit. “They understand a Corbyn government could happen if they vote Lib Dem. It simply comes down to this: vote Lib Dem, get Corbyn. “The only indecision I see is people who have always voted Labour and don’t know whether to vote Lib Dem, Conservative or to abstain. Even if people voted Remain, they want Brexit to be sorted out and want to stop this stagnation.” With “no regrets” over his Brexit position – backing both Boris Johnson and Theresa May’s deals – the MP since 2010 says voters on the doorstep are “uncomfortable” with the fact the Lib Dems “don’t respect democracy”
Matthew Offord, centre, and supporters go door-to-door as he battles to retain his seat
in wanting to scrap Brexit. Before stopping for lunch, I join a canvassing session next to Hendon United Synagogue, where Offord hands out his newsletter, telling voters about his work getting Hezbollah banned, protecting funding for faith schools and Jewish burial rights. He is “proud of the fact that my first question in Parliament was to Michael Gove over school security and the government has since funded that”. Offord adds that the Lib Dem policy on kosher meat “is to follow the EU and
to have the slaughter identified on products”. He disagrees with the Lib Dem policy, citing regular “mis-stuns”. The Labour hopeful in Hendon is David Pinto-Duschinsky, 45, the son of a Holocaust survivor, who says his family roots “massively influenced” him. A resident of Jeremy Corbyn’s constituency, who will vote for the Labour leader on 12 December, he was a former adviser to the home secretary, and the then Chancellor Alistair Darling during the financial crisis of 2008, before turning to politics.

He says the country “desperately needs change and we desperately need a Labour government to bring that change”, adding: “It’s the most powerful vehicle for social change this country has ever seen.” When asked why he wants Corbyn as prime minister – amid the row over handling of antisemitism in the party – he admits: “Labour has a problem. There’s no whitewash. We need to do more. It’s as simple as that and it breaks my heart to say that, but we do have a problem and we need to fix it. “That’s why I welcome the EHRC’s [Equalities and Human Rights Commission] review and want make sure they leave no stone unturned.” He adds: “I don’t want a politics where I have to choose, or any Jew needs to choose, between who we are and what we believe. I understand people have left, and I respect their decisions, but I don’t think that’s the right decision. “I want to fight for a Labour Party that Jews can be proud to vote for. I don’t think leaving the party helps.” Our coffee shop chat is suddenly interrupted by a member of the public, who asks: “You’re not Labour, are you? Around here?” Pinto-Duschinsky says he has not had “a formal discussion” with the Lib Dems, but adds: “I obviously think it would be massively helpful if they stood down, because they can’t win here. “At the last election, they got 3.8 percent of the

Hendon’s doors vote. If you want a second referendum, the only way to deliver that is by voting Labour.” He returns to talk about his Jewish upbringing, going to Reubens after Shabbat, and being welcomed into Finchley Progressive Synagogue. “Having a daughter and watching how in our shul and community she’s been brought in, brought up and accepted, that sense of being embraced by a broader community is what being Jewish means.” Meanwhile, despite her party registering under 2,000 votes at the last election in Hendon, Lib Dem candidate Clareine Enderby is chipper about her chances. A former Labour member, who was the Lib Dem candidate for Finchley and Golders Green before Luciana Berger got the nod, she is deeply concerned about Brexit and the impact it might have on minorities. Calling Berger “absolutely inspiring” and “incredibly brave”, Enderby tells me in a phone interview that the former Labour and Change UK MP “is a woman with the courage of her convictions”. She adds: “She bravely stood on so many issues and she is hugely inspiring and good on the doorstep as well. I was very happy to stand aside for her.” The former lawyer-turned-actress has limited experience with the Jewish community, but says Labour is “mired in antisem-

itism”, while adding the Conservative Party is “subject to accusations of Islamophobia”. She expresses concern about the “undercurrent of anti-foreigner talk; the hostility makes minority groups more nervous”, adding that it is “inexcusable that two parties can be led by two people who are presiding over such a culture of intolerance to minority groups”.
Enderby bats away fears that a vote for the Lib Dems could let Corbyn in, saying: “Jo Swinson has made it very clear we would not be letting Corbyn into Number 10.” The Lib Dem hopeful also fights off claims that her party still has a lingering antisemitism problem, after being asked about the likes of David Ward and Jenny Tonge, who have since been kicked out over antisemitism claims. “Those particular people you mentioned were forced out of the party. They were not tolerated. From time to time, no doubt, and we’ve had a surge in membership, things may come up. But the key thing is they are dealt with properly.
“As Sidney became ill, I realised that I wasn’t in a very good position. He would explain things, but I wouldn’t really get it.” So they’d left it and left it, and then Sidney died. And now she was alone. And it was frightening. “I was petrified that I’d do something and all my money would disappear, or something would happen with the bank, or I don’t know.” She happened to hear about Paperweight and got in touch. Her Paperweight caseworker, Susan, talked Carole through all the paperwork

“There are processes, so this kind of attitude and behaviour is not tolerated and is not swept under the carpet the way antisemitism in Labour has flourished, and Islamophobia in the Conservative doesn’t seem to be being dealt with appropriately at all. “I haven’t seen anything in the Lib Dems that would lead me to be worried about that – although isolated incidents have occurred in the past and they’ve been dealt with.”

Shul’s concert tribute to May Hundreds of people crowded into Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue on Sunday for a concert tribute to Theresa May, writes Jenni Frazer. The former prime minister herself stayed away, however,

The synagogue’s 20th annual chazanut concert featured both Jewish and secular music, and showcased two extraordinary talents: HGSS’s own cantor, Avrumi Freilich, and the Belz Chasid singing sensation from New York, Shulem Lemmer, making his first UK appearance. He has just become the first strictly Orthodox singer to be signed to a major record label, Decca Gold.
Tributes were paid to Theresa May’s time in Downing Street
Among the array of musical offerings was the Rinah Ensemble and orchestra, conducted by Eliot Alderman. At
the concert, Israel’s ambassador to the UK, Mark Regev, paid tribute to his predecessor, Daniel Taub, who was
present, and thanked him for the help he had provided in the transition of the post. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, with whom May had dined on the eve of taking up office in Downing Street, said: “Future events, particularly in the next month, will determine the well-being of Jews and Judaism in Great Britain.” Regev thanked the chief rabbi for “his spiritual leadership in uneasy and uncertain times”. Other guests included Mike Freer, the Conservative candidate for Finchley and Golders Green.

CALL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE PLEDGE The Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE) has called on parliamentary candidates to commit to social justice by pledging to champion six proposals. They include allowing asylum seekers to work while their claims are assessed, reuniting refugee families and funding a resettlement programme for unaccompanied refugee children and young people in the United Kingdom. JCORE also urged all political parties to have “clear and transparent procedures for dealing with all forms of racism, including antisemitism and Islamophobia”.

Dear Reader, Have you considered leaving a gift in your Will to a Jewish Charity? In 2013, 93% of the 263,346 Jews in the UK, reported donating money to a charity in the past year. Although this is a very comforting figure and reflects the importance with which charities are viewed, according to the most recent research from 2011, only 1 in 4 leave a gift in their Will. This disparity of figures could be due to the fact that the giving of lifetime donations are entrenched in our charitable history. From as early as the 10th Century BCE, charity boxes were permanently affixed in the synagogue, with separate sections for all communal organisations. Conversely, actively encouraging the public to leave money to charities in a Will did not begin until 2012, with the launch of Jewish Legacy. With the prevalence of student loans, higher mortgages and reliance on credit cards, to-day, less people are able to make regular donations than ever before. Hence, for some, leaving a gift in one’s Will is their only option. Leaving money to charity does not have to be at the detriment of your family and friends, who, of course, are and should be your priority. However, after thinking of them, any amount left to a Jewish Charity will help the fu-ture of our community immeasurably. With this in mind, we implore everyone to consider this form of giving (as we have)- a gift that will live on for years after we have gone. From the secular to the observant, those with lower and higher means, whoever you are, whatever your situation, anyone can help make a difference and help create a better world by including a charity in their Will. Charities improve our lives through the work they do, be it through providing housing, medical treatment or entertainment to those in need of their services. Leaving money in your Will, can help your favourite charity make a real difference to countless people in need, both in the here and now and into the future. “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.” Albert Einstein Our Jewish Charities need your support. Candidates vye for your vote Voters in the UK’s most Jewish areas will get a chance to ask their burning questions to parliamentary candidates vying for key seats over the coming weeks, writes Mathilde Frot. Stanmore United Synagogue, Finchley Reform Synagogue and the Somali Bravanese Welfare Association are just some of the organisations giving candidates the chance to battle it out in dozens of election hustings. The hustings have been organised by the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC), Board of Deputies and London Jewish Forum (LJF) in partnership with Jewish News. LJF’s Andrew Gilbert said the election could prove “vital” for the community. “What is different this time is the number of seats in London, Essex and Hertfordshire that are considered marginal and could swing,” he said.
“Engagement is important. STUDENT SUSPENDED Welsh activist investigated Labour has suspended a student activist pictured in an election leaflet who was reported to the party last year over antisemitism claims, Jewish News understands. Kierin Offlands, 21, appeared on the campaign leaflet alongside fellow activist Aisha Malik-Smith, but his photograph has since been removed from all online material. The leaflet, produced by
Labour Unions, a group of 12 trade unions affiliated to the party, was marked “Real change for young workers”. Labour Against Antisemitism reported Offlands, who apologised yesterday, to the party. He received a warning in April last year, as first reported by The Sun. A post shared from his Facebook described Israeli soldiers as “coward #ZioNazi stormtroopers”.
An activist for Plaid Cymru has expressed “deep regret” over social media comments she said “crossed the boundary into antisemitism”. Sahar Al-Faifi’s membership to Plaid Cymru was suspended last Sunday as the party investigated the material dating back to 2012. A party spokesperson said: “Plaid Cymru will not tolerate antisemitism, racism or
intolerance in any form. That includes the appalling abuse the individual has been subject to.” In a statement, Al-Faifi, who is from Cardiff, said: “Several years ago, I made a handful of social media posts I regret deeply as they cross the boundary of criticism of Israel into antisemitism.” She apologised for the posts, which she had deleted.

Special Report / Mitzvah Day 2019
When one good turn deserves 25,000 more! Thousands of volunteers came together on Sunday to plant trees, support food banks and perform good deeds during an annual Jewish-led day of social action, writes Mathilde Frot. Mitzvah Day, the UK’s biggest faith-based day of social action, returned for the 11th year, with 25,000 volunteers and 500 organisations taking part across the country. In one event, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis visited a London mosque, joined by members of Brondesbury Park Synagogue and Hampstead’s Roslyn Hill Unitarian Chapel, Mitzvah Day’s founder Laura Marks, its chief executive Georgina Bye and interfaith adviser Rabbi Jeff Berger. The group planted apple and fig trees, basil and hyssop, vowing to meet again at the Al-Khoei Islamic Centre in Queen’s Park to harvest the produce. “In a very challenging world, by standing here together we are making a huge statement,” Rabbi Mirvis told the event. “Being on this site, which used to be a synagogue, with our Muslim brothers and sisters on Mitzvah Day is charged with that symbolism of unity. This is what the world should be like all the time.” Dr Sheikh Ramzy, of the Oxford Islamic Information Centre, added: “If you look at every part of the world, there is war and hatred. But by coming together and planting this seed of peace in this holy place, we can start to bring peace to our heart, our
families, our communities, our cities and around the globe.” In Finchley, five rabbis, each representing a synagogue movement, took part in an emotional ceremony at the Somali Bravanese Welfare Association. The community centre opened this year after its former premises were destroyed in an arson attack six years ago. Jewish and Muslim youth planted bulbs at the centre to donate to a local care home, attaching labels with notes and pictures for residents. Rabbis Danny Rich, David Mason, Miriam Berger, Rebecca Birk and Jeff Berger were hosted by the association’s Abu Bakar Ali and Asma Mohamed Ali, who led efforts to reopen a centre for the Somali Bravanese community. “This was an amazing demonstration of how communities can support each other in adversity and open our doors to share positive moments together,” said Georgina Bye. “Planting bulbs at the centre and in pots to be donated to a local old age home, we look forward to returning to see them bloom and to continue this wonderful relationship,” she added. A similar project took place at the Centre for Islamic Enlightening at the Hippodrome in Golders Green with the interfaith women’s group Nisa-Nashim. Razi Zadeh, the centre’s manager, said: “It was a pleasure to work together with our Jewish friends and
neighbours on Mitzvah Day, in our local community, to do something nice for people in care homes.” Meanwhile in Finchley Road, the JW3 hosted six faith communities to cook for homeless people staying
and turn old t-shirts into tote bags for charity. Elsewhere in the country, the day saw a flurry of interfaith events in Leeds, tea parties and “collectathons” in Manchester, schoolchildren’s baking projects for elderly

communities, blanket-knitting for the homeless in Newcastle and a beach clean-up on Walney Island and Maryport in Cumbria. “In this political climate, when everything is so unclear, one thing we can be sure of is that our environmental climate needs our attention,” said Marks. “By focusing on the environment for Mitzvah Day this year, something we share with all humanity and

New Arab council calls for direct relations with Israel A new council comprising senior figures in the Arab world has called for more direct relations with Israelis while repudiating those calling for a boycott of Israeli goods, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. At the culmination of a landmark two-day meeting in London, the 30-member Arab Council for Regional Integration issued a statement yesterday, urging increased dialogue. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair praised the group, saying in a message: “The developing Arab-Israeli relationship can, should and must provide the critical underpinning” to peace negotiations, alongside US involvement. “Integrating Israel in the region will benefit all parties and not only Israel,” said Blair, who acted as the Middle

Church’s mea culpa Continued from page 1 “The enduring existence within the Anglican Church of a theological approach that is permissive of this behaviour does considerable damage to the relationship between our faiths,” said Mirvis. “Pursuing a new Christian-Jewish paradigm in this context is exceptionally challenging.” Richard Sudworth, the Church’s national inter-religious affairs adviser, welcomed Mirvis’s “tough words” and said the Church “needs to hear the depth of feeling the Chief Rabbi is expressing. Any sense we target Jewish people must carry the weight of history.” The Council of Christians and Jews said: “This comes at a sensitive time for the UK Jewish community with rising antisemitism in wider British culture. We welcome the prac-
tical emphasis of the report, which is pragmatic and hopeful with regard to future JewishChristian relations.” The report acknowledges “the destructive nature and origins of Christian perceptions of the Jewish people” and reflects on “the attribution of collective guilt to the Jewish people for the death of Christ”. This, the authors acknowledge, contributed to “fostering the acquiescence, if not positive support, of many Christians in actions that led to the Holocaust”, in wording that amounts to the Church’s most forthright mea culpa to date. Drawing on rising levels of antisemitism, and referencing his 2016 Auschwitz-Birkenau visit, Welby said: “Too often in history, the Church has been responsible for and colluded in antisemitism.”
national who works as an anchor at the Arabic-language Al-Hurra TV channel. Hamed, from Lebanon, told the closing of the conference: “We do not deny the rights of the Jews to have a country because they are a nation. They have their religion, language, culture, art and heritage”. He urged Jews “to return to Lebanon, take back their
homes and live side by side with Muslims and Christians and all constituents of the Lebanese mosaic”, adding that Arab countries “should protect the citizens, their economic rights and their right to build their holy places, to pray, and to ensure their freedoms”. Mushaykhis said Hamed “took a chance to participate even though his life may be in danger”. The council comprises clerics, activists, journalists, diplomats and parliamentarians from countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Tunisia, Iraq and the Palestinian territories. “These are not fringe players,” said James Sorene, of Middle East think tank BICOM. “They’re thought leaders in their societies.”

AJEX parade / Shechita petition / Policeman guilty / News NEWS IN BRIEF
JEWISH HEADS UNITE AT PAJES SEMINAR Headteachers from Jewish schools nationwide came together for the Partnerships for Jewish Schools annual seminar at Hunton Park in Hertfordshire. Attendees gathered for the two-day conference to discuss challenges facing schools and listen to speeches from industry professionals. Jonathan Boyd, executive director of Jewish Policy Research, discussed the future of British Jewish life, and heads Rachel Fink of JFS and Yvonne Baron of Etz Chaim spoke of the impact of personal stories on leadership.
SHOAH FORUM TO INVOLVE 30 STATES The heads of state of more than 30 countries are set to attend the Fifth World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem. The presidents of Russia, France, Germany and Austria are among the world leaders set to meet in Jerusalem on 23 January, as Israel prepares to mark 75 years since the liberation of AuschwitzBirkenau. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said the UK expects to send a representative for the forum, during which discussion will turn to fighting antisemitism worldwide.
2,000 salute community’s fallen The largest and most diverse attendance of Jewish community members in 20 years braced the cold November air on Sunday for the annual parade remembering Jews who died fighting for Britain, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The Remembrance Parade organised by the Association of Jewish ExServicemen and Women (AJEX) was this year jointly led by 12 serving Royal Marines in full ceremonial uniform, in turn were led by Lt Col Jason Durup. Together with current Jewish servicemen and women and the Scots Guards, the Royal Marines from a London detachment were joined by AJEX patrons including this year’s lead patron Sir Malcolm Rifkind, former foreign secretary. Other AJEX patrons present included Lord Carlile, Lord Sterling, Lloyd Dorfman and

year the members’ reunion was held before the parade, rather than after, the first that tickets were issued to par-
ticipants, and the first that the Board of Deputies’ president was invited to lay a wreath on the north side on the Cenotaph alongside Reviewing Officer Admiral Gardner. “It was a huge success,” said AJEX chief executive Major Danny Yank. “With well over 2,000 people this was the biggest parade in 20 years... Once a reunion for former soldiers, this is now a very popular and inclusive community event.”

would finally close it down, while pursuing a parallel petition for the mandatory installation of CCTV in all slaughterhouses. In the past two weeks the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the National Secular Society and

Political cartoons / Special Report
Celebrating mockery that has no mercy Tim Benson, Britain’s foremost authority on political cartoons, tells Beatrice Sayers about the power of the illustrator’s pen Few people can have enjoyed the past few years of political tumult quite as much as Britain’s cartoonists. Drawing under pressure for daily newspaper pages and websites, they’ve been producing witty, shrewd and sometimes venomous responses to the ongoing Brexit drama, and now they’re feeding with glee off the general election campaign. The 2019 edition of Britain’s Best Political Cartoons is just out, and what a year it has been. A cartoon by Morten Morland in the Times shows Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell regretting the fact that Labour MP Luciana Berger had survived a no-confidence vote in her constituency (she left the party two weeks later); a cartoon by Andy Davey in the Daily Telegraph depicts Theresa May, who was clinging to office despite criticism from Tory MPs, as an Extinction Rebellion protester glued to No 10; and one by Peter Schrank in the Sunday Business Post shows Boris Johnson, who was trying prorogue parliament, as Westminster’s demolition man. The book is edited by Dr Tim Benson, owner of the Political Cartoon Gallery in
Putney, who says the current chaos in British politics is superb for cartoonists: “It inspires them to go on and do great things.” Benson first became interested in political cartoons as a boy when he read the books of Vicky cartoons his parents kept in the loo. Vicky (Victor Weisz), born in Berlin in 1913 to Hungarian-Jewish parents, had come to Britain in 1935 and by the time war took hold had become a leading leftwing cartoonist, working for the News Chronicle, the Evening Standard and the Mirror, where he drew alongside the renowned Londoner Philip Zec, who was also Jewish. Philip Zec, one of 11 children of a tailor from Odessa, waged his own personal war against Hitler from the offices of the Mirror. He had applied to join the RAF but never received his call-up because key newspaper figures came under the schedule of reserved occupations. Among his many memorable images is his VE day cartoon ‘Don’t Lose It Again’, showing an exhausted British soldier handing over a hard-won victory wreath. By the time it appeared, Zec had already taken his place on the Nazis’ blacklist, to be given
Some of the drawings in Britain’s Best Political Cartoons of 2019, and (inset below) a caricature of Tim Benson by Christian Adams of the Evening Standard
appropriate punishment after Germany had won the war. Also on the list was New Zealander David Low, who worked at the London Evening Standard. Low had been creating newspaper cartons in London from 1919, producing work that brought both acclaim and notoriety. His 1937 strip titled ‘Hit and Muss’ (Hitler and Mussolini) led to complaints from German diplomats and was censored, but the cartoonist spent the war years creating illustrations that were concise and often prophetic. A cartoon from 1938 shows Hitler dressed as Father Christmas collecting babies from across Europe and dropping them into his gift sack. At his gallery in Putney, Benson, 60, sits beneath Zec’s original VE day cartoon, which he snapped up at auction in Eastbourne, and surrounded by hundreds of original news drawings. Brought up in central London by parents who were members of the Western Synagogue in Crawford Place, he taught history before leaving to do a PhD on Low, and has spent the decades since feeding his passion. “I think Jews are quite prominent in cartooning because they’re outsiders looking in,” he says. “They weren’t part of the establishment.” He is used to the idea of political cartooning causing offence – some have called it a bloodsport – and says the only time he can be sure of getting publicity is when there are accusations that a drawing is racist, sexist or antisemitic. “But if it’s published in a mainstream
national newspaper I will defend it,” Benson says. “It’s the intent that matters, especially if it’s a visual image.” In the past couple of years the veteran Guardian cartoonist Steve Bell has had two cartoons rejected by his editor as antisemitic. As Benson puts it: “Steve Bell is a law unto himself, or tries to be.” Twenty-eight entries are in the running for the 20th annual Political Cartoon of the Year award, which Benson organises and which take place next month (Dec). He recalls that the winning entry in 2003 was Dave Brown’s caricature of Ariel Sharon eating an infant. In the cartoon, published the day before the Israeli general election, Sharon says: ‘What’s wrong… You never seen a politician kissing babies before?’ There was a furious front-page story in Ha’aretz and representations from Sharon’s solicitors that the cartoon alluded to the blood libel; Benson himself received hate mail (“I was getting petitions from Israeli schools,” he recalls). He doesn’t predict a winner this year but says: “I find the best ones are usually those you get in an instant. There’s an immediacy to them.” With Westminster politics in disarray, the country’s hard-working illustrators are on top form, ahead of their continental counterparts in draughtsmanship and with a flair and originality unseen in America. “We have the best artists here,” as Benson puts it. Perhaps the next government could do with some of their good judgment and insight too.

Israel settlements ‘no longer illegal’ Donald Trump’s US administration has declared that the White House no longer sees Jewish settlements in the West Bank as “illegal” under international law. The announcement was made by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday, but within an hour of Pompeo’s statement the European Union said its position remained unchanged. “After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate, the United States has concluded that the establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law,” said Pompeo. “Calling the establishment of civilian settlements inconsistent with international law hasn’t worked. It hasn’t advanced the cause of peace.” He added: “The hard truth is that there will never be a judicial resolution to the conflict, and arguments about who is right and who is wrong as a matter of international law will not bring peace.” The policy U-turn repudiates one of Barack Obama’s last presidential acts in not vetoing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which called the settlements a “flagrant violation” of international law with “no legal validity”. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netan-

yahu welcomed Pompeo’s statement, saying it “rights a historical wrong”. But the UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said he “stands by” Resolution 2334, that “settlements in the West Bank are a flagrant violation of international law. They are an obstacle to peace.” While some British Jewish groups reacted with disappointment, saying the change of policy would not change the reality on the ground, others “welcomed” the change. Paul Charney, chair of the Zionist Federation, said: “We view [Pompeo’s statement] as fair, true and just. “Genuine attempts to define any justified Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria have all been ignored by the international community for far too long.”

Schindler’s List producer dies Schindler’s List producer Branko Lustig has died, aged 87. His death last Thursday at home in Croatia was announced by the Festival of Tolerance, a Jewish film festival held in Zagreb for the last 13 years, of which he was president. Born to a Jewish family, Lustig was imprisoned in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Many family members were
killed by the Nazis, including his father and grandmother. He began in the Yugoslavian film industry in the 1950s and worked as a production supervisor on the 1982 Hollywood film Sophie’s Choice. After moving to Los Angeles in the 1980s, he met Steven Spielberg, director of Schindler’s List, which won the Oscar for best picture in 1994. “My number was 83317,”
Lustig said in a speech at the award ceremony. “I’m a Holocaust survivor. It’s a long way from Auschwitz to this stage.” Lustig went on to recall the people he saw die who urged him to be a witness to their murder. “By helping Steven to make this movie, I hope I fulfil my obligation to the innocent victims of the Holocaust.” Lustig went on to win another best picture Oscar for producing Ridley Scott’s 2000 film Gladiator.
GOOGLE TURNS BOOKS DIGITAL
Some 120,000 books from the collection of the National Library of Israel will go online in a collaboration between the library and Google. The “complex” process is under way and is expected to take about two years, the library said. The books must be shipped in containers meeting strict climate-control and security requirements from the library in Jerusalem to Google’s digitisation centre in Germany. About 45 percent are in Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino. Yaron Deutscher, head of digital access for the library, said the Google Books collaboration was “a significant contribution to our work opening digital access to all books published in the first 450 years of Hebrew printing”.

Pope warns of ‘rebirth’ of hatred against Jews Pope Francis has warned of a “rebirth” in antisemitism. Speaking at the Vatican, the Argentina-born pope improvised his comment at his weekly papal audience. “I would like to make a separate note,” he said. “The Jewish people have suffered so much in history, they have been chased away, they, too, have been persecuted.” He reviewed past Jewish persecutions but warned also about the “rebirth” of hate against the Jews. “In the last century we saw so many brutalities against the Jewish people, and we were all convinced that this was over,” the pope said. “But today the habit of persecuting the Jews,

Arrests after 80 graves desecrated in Denmark Two men have been arrested in connection with the vandalism of more than 80 gravestones at a Jewish cemetery in Denmark. The men arrested by the East Jutland Police are suspected of vandalism and could also be charged under Denmark’s anti-racism laws, The LocalDenmark reported. The suspects are aged 27 and 38, Associated Press reported. The older man is a member of a neo-Nazi group, according to the report. The damage at the Ostre Kirkegard
Cemetery in the town of Randers, in western Denmark, was reported nearly two weeks ago, though it is not known when the vandalism took place. Green paint was thrown on the headstones and did not form any words or symbols. Some headstones were overturned. Burials in the cemetery date back to the early 19th century. Police spokesman Klaus Arboe Rasmussen said the motive was to target “a particular group of the population based on their religion”, according to the Associated Press.
One of the two arrested is a member of a neo-Nazi group
Shabbat Sha-long! It’s a 32ft challah... A kosher bakery in Australia is celebrating after baking – ahem, we mean breaking – the Guinness world record for the longest challah. Grandma Moses Bakery, in partnership with the Jewish National Fund chapter in New South Wales, broke the record last week, according to an
excited Facebook post from the proud group. The record-setting challah, pictured, measured more than 32ft in length and required more than 150lb of dough and 10 hours to bake. The previous record, set in Brooklyn, New York, in 2015, was a 20ft challah.
secuted. Understand?” The pope did not refer to any specific incident. His comments were a part of his reflection on the biblical account of the expulsion of the Jewish people from Rome by Emperor Claudius in the first century. Francis often recalls experiences with Jewish friends during his childhood in Buenos Aires. He sent a letter to the Argentine Jewish political organisation DAIA ahead of the 25th anniversary this month of the attack that killed 85 people at a Jewish centre in Buenos Aires. “Since the first day,” he wrote, “my heart has been with the relatives of the victims, Jews or Christians.”
£2M DUTCH FUND FOR CEMETERIES The Dutch government has allocated £2.14 million toward the maintenance and restoration of Jewish cemeteries in the Netherlands. Culture Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven announced the funding last week in a letter to the lower house of the parliament. Local Jews have trouble maintaining the graves because the community’s numbers never recovered after the Holocaust. Dutch Jews suffered the highest death rate of any Western European country occupied by the Nazis, in part because of local collaboration. Fewer than 40,000 Jews survived in a population of some 140,000, and fewer still returned to the Netherlands. Today there are about 45,000 Jews living in the kingdom, including more than 5,000 Israelis, according to the organisation of Jewish Communities in the Netherlands, or NIK. Thus the small Dutch Jewish community is stretching its resources to maintain more communal property than it can handle. “Jewish cemeteries are often the only remnant of Dutch-Jewish culture, which was largely destroyed in 1940-1945,” NIK said in a statement about the funding. Especially “forgotten cemeteries or ones with an unusual character will be treated in the coming five years” with the new funding, NIK wrote. The organisation said it was “deeply satisfied with the minister and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science’s decision to address the issue” of neglected Jewish burial places.

Newly unsealed court papers show that members of a far-right paramilitary group, known as The Base, were responsible for vandalising synagogues in Michigan and Wisconsin last September. The FBI investigated the daubing of neo-Nazi slogans and insignia on synagogues. Several young men who were arrested later told agents that their efforts were dubbed ‘Operation Kristallnacht’.

A parade that this year featured a float with effigies of grinning Jews holding money with rats on their shoulders is facing removal of its UNESCO credentials. NEWS IN BRIEF
NETFLIX TO AMEND DEMJANJUK DOC
GREECE WILL ADOPT IHRA DEFINITION
Netflix is to amend a documentary series about alleged Nazi camp guard John Demjanjuk amid complaints from Poland. The country’s prime minister wrote to the streaming giant about The Devil Next Door, a series which tells the story of a Ukrainian-American car worker who was accused of war crimes. Mateusz Morawiecki insisted that Netflix change maps featured in the programme which located death camps inside modern-day Poland’s borders. He said they misrepresented Poland as being responsible for the camps when it was occupied by Germany during the Second World War. The Auschwitz Memorial Museum also complained to Netflix over the maps, accusing it of misplacing some of the camps.
Greece will adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, its prime minister has revealed. Kyriakos Mitsotakis made the announcement on Friday during a meeting at his office with David Saltiel, President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, and Dr Efstathios Lianos Liantis, the head of the Greek delegation to the IHRA, the Ekathimerini newspaper reported. The prime minister assigned the country’s vice-president, Panagiotis Pikrammenos, oversight of the project as well as coordinating and supervising the integration of the IHRA definitions into domestic legislation and education. Liantis is a founding member of the Holocaust Museum of Greece.

VOICE OF THE JEWISH NEWS
Happy birthday ...from all of us!
There are very few people in the Jewish community whose birthday could attract the kind of response this newspaper had when we asked: “Would you like to sign Sir Ben Helfgott’s birthday card?” Just a glance at the names shows the level of respect. From the world of politics: four past prime ministers, the current prime minister, Scotland’s first minister and the leader of the two other main political parties. From the world of arts and literature: two of this country’s most successful authors and an award-winning scriptwriter. From the world of religion, the most influential leaders in England. From the world of sport, the heads of the nation’s top sporting bodies. From the world of entertainment, the biggest names from television and radio. From the world of philanthropy, some of the biggest givers in the land. From the community: three presidents of the Board of Deputies, the heads of every major communal organisation, several Jewish peers and, of course, most important of all: fellow survivors, Holocaust educators, and the next generation, who are still learning about what people such as Ben went through, in the hope that it won’t ever happen again. There are very few people in the Jewish community – any community – whose birthday could attract the kind of response we had, because there are very few people alive today who lived through what he did, and who subsequently did so much good for so many people. Ben turns 90 on Friday. May he live to 120.

We all know Labour under Mr Corbyn is anathema. We should consider, nonetheless, that having made the point for months with superb support from non-Jewish MPs and others, it might be time to ease up for the remaining weeks of the election campaign. Why? It is very far from being uppermost in the minds of the 99 percent of the electorate whose priorities are Leave or Remain, the NHS and the

POLITICAL INTERFERENCE? “Okay, you’re now being joined in there by Jeremy Corbyn!”
I note that two of your letter writers last week on the subject of our general election live in Israel. How dare they interfere in our democracy? They don’t live here, pay taxes

TARGET SEAT
Planet care
It is shameful that Lib Dem staff should be subject to intimidation by members of our community, especially as the party has every right to stand and fight for any seat (Jewish News, 14 November 2019). As a pro-Remain party, it makes sense for them to view the constituency of Finchley and Golders Green, which voted 69 percent Remain in the EU referendum as a strong target seat. While this constituency has been a Labour/Conservative marginal during previous elections, voting loyalties are now a lot more volatile. Richard Goorney Bushey
Your article stated “about 52 percent of Jewish families in the UK have three or more children, compared with 31 percent of families nationwide who have more than two” (Jewish News, 7 November 2019). Our country and our planet are seriously overpopulated, with essentials such as water, food and living space at a premium. Overpopulation is a major factor in climate change and the extinction of species, as well as in the pollution of air and water. The Biblical exhortation to “be fruitful and multiply” no longer applies. Surely religious and cultural considerations shouldn’t trump the environment.
Luciana’s choice aids Labour only
BERGER CAN’T COUNT ON OUR COMMUNITY
Two letters last week caught my eye, one applauding Luciana Berger for standing as a Lib Dem in Finchley and Golders Green, and another criticising her. If she defeats Mike Freer, a long-time friend to the community, Corbyn will be the winner. As such, Ms Berger’s choice of Finchley-Golders Green does her no credit.
I’m sure I’m not the only one questioning the motives of Luciana Berger contesting Finchley and Golders Green. Surely she wouldn’t play on her Jewish heritage on the assumption that we Jews are so partisan that we’d vote for someone purely based on their religion?

What being British is all about, down to the letter JENNI FRAZER
being part of the national conversation, which applies right across the political and religious spectrum, left to right. The national conversation which says that inclusiveness and tolerance is good and prejudice and verbal and physical violence are unacceptable. In this space, on too many occasions, I have been taken aback at some of the views voiced, all too frequently anonymously, about Jews. They are views which singularly fail to take into account the incredible contribution we have made, and continue to make. From our ranks we have produced brave servicemen and women — British
I
like to think I’m a fairly loyal citizen who, on the whole, pretty much falls in with the civic norms of British society. These include: wearing a poppy during the run-up to Remembrance Day, observing the silence on the day itself. Respect for one’s elders (though they are not necessarily one’s betters). Co-operating with the police, obeying the law, and enjoying some of the quintessential looniness of Britain: its passion for sport, even if the national teams don’t win very much, and we are always surprised when they do; generally agreeing that the Queen is a Good Thing, although the less that can be sa id about some other members of the royal family, probably the better; loving the offthe-wall innovation of our top comedians, writers and artists, and taking full advantage of British arts and sciences. Above all, what I like about Britain is
❝
I DON’T KNOW WHO ORGANISED THE LETTER IN THE GUARDIAN BUT I THANK THEM
Jews who fought and still fight for this country. And that’s one of the reasons that I’m proud to wear a poppy. Our immigrants — Jews who came to Britain on the Kindertransport, or as unlikely domestic servants on the eve of the war — hugely contributed to this society. Our sons and daughters have become groundbreakers and pioneers in every walk of life, from engineers and scientists to law lords and politicians. We work in the arts, in the media, in education, in health. We have helped to make and shape Britain, from its human rights policies to its antiracism laws. And yet… for some people, it’s not good enough. Last week, in the throes of yet another impassioned debate as to why Jews might not feel ready to vote for Jeremy Corbyn, I read one serpentine comment. The person suggested that if Jews were really concerned with the good of the country, they would vote for Corbyn. The natural logic of this is that Jews who cannot bring themselves to do that, don’t want the
best for Britain. Leaving aside the bizarre deduction that only Corbyn and his cult know what is best for Britain, I found this comment frightening. Because if Jews can be held not to want the best for Britain, the next step is to regard us as inimical to our society. Dangerous and hateful ideology — and nowhere near the truth. So how wonderful, then, to see last week’s letter in the Guardian from 24 wellknown people, ranging from writer John Le Carre to actor Joanna Lumley, declaring that they, too, can’t bring themselves to vote for Corbyn. They wrote: “Antisemitism is central to a wider debate about the kind of country we want to be. To ignore it because Brexit looms larger is to declare that anti-Jewish prejudice is a price worth paying for a Labour government. Which other community’s concerns are disposable in this way? Who would be next?” I don’t know who organised this letter, but personally, I can’t thank them enough. That’s what being British is about.

The Jews at the heart of this heinous story ALEX BRUMMER
CITY EDITOR, THE DAILY MAIL
T
he evidence as to whether Prince Andrew was at pizza restaurant in Woking or, as alleged, at the nightclub Tramp in London, with an under-aged American claimant, remains a matter of dispute. It is more than a little disappointing that the Queen’s second son has not managed to find better words of remorse for being caught up in the scandal involving the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. But anyone who has ever engaged with the prince, as I was able to when he was being wheeled out by his advisers and the Palace as Business Ambassador for Britain, will not be surprised by his lack of regret. He has an unshakeable self-confidence in his own abilities and judgement which leaves little room for self-doubt. What members of the Jewish community feel about these much debated events is unknown. But I suspect they wish for them to
go away. Not because they would do anything but deplore Epstein’s appalling behaviour, his conviction and the events around his suicide. All of this falls way outside the moral and ethical underpinnings of Judaism. The uncomfortable feelings arise from the fact that so many of the characters involved – other than the prince and complainant Virginia Giuffre (nee Roberts) – are of Jewish background. Indeed, the unconnected allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, which gave rise to the #MeToo movement fall into the same category. There is enough antisemitism around at present, particularly
❝
ANYONE WHO’S ENGAGED WITH THE PRINCE WILL NOT BE SURPRISED BY HIS SELF-CONFIDENCE
within the Labour Party, without adding new causes of disquiet. Many of the dramatis personæ in this royal saga are Jewish. After the suicide of Epstein the hashtag #EpsteinMurder trended worldwide, thousands shared conspiracies on Twitter alleging Epstein had been a Mossad agent and his killing had been ordered by a “Jewish mafia”. A distinguished Washington lawyer (who is an old friend), who also has the surname Epstein, received an email from an acquaintance. It announced he could no longer keep him on his phone directory as looking at the name made him feel sick. Jeffrey Epstein’s close friend Ghislaine Maxwell, unhelpfully, is the daughter of the late and disgraced Robert Maxwell. Among the other high profile characters in this series of events is distinguished American jurist Alan M. Dershowitz of the Harvard Law School who acted as Epstein’s lawyer. Dershowitz has heroic status among America’s Jews for his robust legal defence against Holocaust deniers and support of Israel.
Dershowitz, too, has been the subject of allegations brought by Virginia Roberts which he has taken to the airwaves in Britain to strenuously disavow. He claims in court papers filed in the US to have been “falsely accused”. He does not deny his previous association with Epstein and acknowledged acting as his lawyer. Given Dershowitz’s formidable intellect and reputation, his account of events is hard to challenge. He has emphatically denied the claims. The final heroic character for the media, in all of this, is the presenter Emily Maitlis for pursuing and helping to win the Newsnight interview at Buckingham Palace with the Duke of York. Maitlis rightly has been lauded for her calm and forensic interviewing skills. If Maitlis, a committed supporter of World Jewish Relief, felt any personal concerns about having to explore the tawdry Epstein legacy, she showed none. Her integrity as an inquiring journalist came through clearly. At least someone of a Jewish background emerges from this muddled affair with deserved credit.

Labour’s new cohort of noisy anti-Zionists LUKE AKEHURST
DIRECTOR, WE BELIEVE IN ISRAEL
A
s well as being mired in institutional antisemitism, Labour has a leader with a deep background of anti-Israel activity. The party took a sharply more radical position on boycotts at its annual conference. But what’s going on in terms of Labour’s personnel and potential new MPs? Labour started the 2017 Parliament with 32 percent of its MPs signed up as supporters of Labour Friends of Israel (LFI), and 50 percent as supporters of Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East (LFPME). Some MPs sign up to both campaigns for balance. Support for the Palestinian cause is far higher than core support for the Corbyn project (about 13 percent of Labour MPs) and extends deep into the historic mainstream of the Labour Party. LFI has lost 20 percent of the MPs it had in 2017 because they have moved to sit as independents or Liberal Democrats or retired.
These departures include some of the most prominent supporters of Israel in Parliament: the recent LFI chairs Joan Ryan and Louise Ellman, party deputy leader Tom Watson, Jewish MPs Luciana Berger and Ivan Lewis, and outspoken opponents of antisemitism Ian Austin and Mike Gapes. Louise led efforts to get Hezbollah proscribed in its entirety and introduced legislation to tackle incitement in Palestinian schools. Joan launched the cross-party bill in support of the International Fund for IsraeliPalestinian Peace. Their departure leaves

a huge gap. In contrast only 12 percent of LFPME’s supporters are leaving Parliament, though these include anti-Israel campaigner Chris Williamson. But the problem is also about the new intake. Assume Labour gets the same parliamentary seats it won in 2017. Some 16 percent of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) would be new. Of these, 58 percent are so clearly Corbynite that it is almost certain they would sign up to LFPME. In some cases their antiIsrael stance is radical. Bell Ribeiro-Addy (Streatham) participated in the Viva Palestinia (a charity fronted by George Galloway) convoys to Gaza in 2009, and worked as Campaigns Officer of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC). Apsana Begum (Poplar and Limehouse) has shared social media posts about Saudi Arabia’s “Zionist masters” and said a university was “offering scholarships to students for spreading Zionist propaganda”. Zarah Sultana (Coventry South) has said she supports “violent resistance” by Palestinians and would “celebrate” the deaths of Tony

Blair and Benjamin Nentanayu. She called Israel “a state created through ethnic cleansing, sustained through occupation, apartheid and war crimes” and said: “Those within the student movement who go to Zionist conferences should be ashamed. You’re advocating racist ideology.” The dozen moderate candidates who would become MPs in this scenario include several who have been opponents of antisemitism, and at least three who have participated in delegations to, or previously signed pledges of support for Israel. But there isn’t an obvious next Louise Ellman or Joan Ryan. Should Labour gain seats, 42 percent of its top target seats are being contested by candidates who are identifiably Corbynites. For now, we know that as well as Labour’s policy and leadership having shifted radically against Israel, the PLP looks like being quantitatively a lot more hostile, and qualitatively a lot more problematic too, with many of the strongest Labour voices for Israel departing and being replaced by a new cohort of outspoken, radical anti-Zionists.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis visited a London mosque, joined by members of Brondesbury Park Synagogue and Hampstead’s Rosslyn Hill Unitarian Chapel, Mitzvah Day’s founder Laura Marks, its chief executive Georgina Bye and interfaith adviser Rabbi Jeff Berger. The group planted apple and fig trees, basil and hyssop, and vowed to meet again at the Al-Khoei Islamic Centre in Queen’s Park to reap the produce. “Being on this site, which used to be a synagogue, with our Muslim brothers and sisters on Mitzvah Day is charged with that symbolism of unity. This is what the world should be like all the time,” Rabbi Mirvis told attendees at the event.

Jewish and Muslim youth planted bulbs at the Somali Bravanese Welfare Association to donate to a local care home, attaching labels with notes and pictures for residents. The community centre opened earlier this year after its former premises were destroyed in an arson attack six years ago. “This was an amazing demonstration of how communities can support each other in adversity and open our doors to share positive moments together,” said Mitzvah Day chief executive Georgina Bye.
Jewish community centre JW3 hosted members of six faith communities to cook for homeless people staying at the Pond Square Chapel Night Shelter in Highgate. Volunteers used produce from their fridges, gardens and cupboards to produce a meal in a nod to this year’s theme of ‘Going Greener’, designed to encourage projects to help the environment.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis was joined by Barnet Mayor, Councillor Caroline Stock and more than 50 volunteers at Camp Simcha’s Mitzvah Day blood drive held with the Joely Bear Appeal at Edgware Blood Donor Centre. Many were first-time donors, including some families supported by Camp Simcha. Pictured are Leigh Renak, of the Joely Bear Appeal, Stock and her consort Dr Richard Stock, Mirvis, and Camp Simcha’s Daniel Gillis.
7 ENGAGED TEENS
A group of Year 9 pupils prepared dinner for 100 homeless people during a cookathon at the Jewish Vegetarian Society in Golders Green. The teenagers prepared dinner for a Crisis shelter, and collected bags of winter clothes. Chayli Fehler, founder and director of the Jewish Volunteering Network’s Project ImpACT, said: “It is wonderful to see so many young volunteers giving their time and energy to do good for others. They want to be engaged and make a difference.”

house near Brent Cross that supports 130 families each week. The group, joined by Rabbi David Mason, donated long-life milk, jam, pasta sauce and coffee to Colindale Foodbank. Organiser Zaki Cooper said: “It’s really important for us to establish good neighbourly relations with other faith groups. Social capital is one of the Jewish community’s treasures, and can be our greatest export.” Lisa Jeffrey from Colindale Foodbank said: “It was wonderful to get together and do something positive and practical. The basic humanity of feeding the hungry is common to both our religions.”
9 HOMELESS HELP
Members of Bushey United Synagogue prepared sandwiches for homeless or vulnerably-housed people supported by the Christian charity New Hope. The Watford-based organisation offers shelter, food, clothing and healthcare to those living locally, who are homeless or disadvantaged.
10 SWEET TREATS
Volunteers from Bushey Synagogue handdelivered cupcakes to residents of Jewish Care’s home, Anita Dorfman House. Pictured is Samuel Woolf, nine, offering a sweet treat to resident Gladys Daniels. On Sunday, a number of Jewish Care residents and community centre members were involved in many activities across synagogues, schools and nurseries in London and Brighton.

Champagne truffles, ice cream rolls, mountains of sushi, feather light latkes and salt beef in Yorkshire puds. This is just a taste of what visitors were treated to on Sunday at Jewish News’ Big Event, which was a smorgasbord of deliciousness thanks to the culinary artistry of Chocim Chocolate, Roll Me Up, Litke Caterers and headline sponsor Toby Levy Celebration Catering. Suffice it to say no one left hungry and those who came with the intention of finding original food, entertainment and venues for their future simchas were introduced to the talents of Beverley Bersch (Toby Levy), who had white-coated waiters circling the rooms with trays of falafels, coated courgettes and smoked salmon on toast. Litke’s chef made generous amounts of fresh negiri and sashimi, while Kushan Marthelis of Chocim had everyone coming back for more of his artisan chocolate. To say there was something for everyone is an understatement as the show at The Village Hotel in Elstree covered the function gamut. Starting with invites, which are made by Kisharon (www.kisharon.org.uk), visitors could then move into the marquee provided by Sponsor W.A.Carr & Son before checking out the tunes of DJs such as The Spin Sisters (www.spin-sisters.co.uk) and Vibe London, where the man behind the decks was none other

Daniel Benisty of The London Swing and Soul Band (www.thelondonswingband.co.uk) did a star turn with his trumpeter, and the singing waitresses from Jewish Encore (www.jewishencore.co.uk) were desperate to join in. For the kids, Funtime Hire (www.funtimehire.co.uk) had set up Roll A Derby, several arcade classics and a face-painting table with the most talented and fastest floral artist. The company also offers giant snow globes, skittle alleys and pool tables, but there’s only so much you can fit in a room. With a doughnut wall by Honeypop alongside a popcorn machine, The Big Event was the closest thing to a fairground on Sunday. Led Factory was proud to showcase its Media Wizard – an astonishing 4m x 2m of 4k HD vision, where every guest could have their ‘selfie’ displayed for other guests to see. For the exhibitors, the day ended with lots of enquiries and those who ate too much free food signed up for a weight loss programme with Ace Lifestyle or a course with the Israeli Dance Institute (www.idi.org.uk). Chefs Heston Blumenthal, Carla Hall and Niklas Ekstedt will take on the roles of ‘Food Gods’ in Channel 4 and Netflix’s magical food competition, Crazy Delicious. The new six-episode series, presented by comedian and foodie Jayde Adams, is an innovative food competition set on the world’s first edible set, which features blossom, chocolate soil and a drinkable babbling brook. Each week, three inventive cooks will work magic with commonplace ingredients and present their dishes to the three celebrity judges. Blumenthal says: “In Crazy Delicious, we’re asking for dishes that not only taste great, but are also visually spectacular, emotionally powerful and nostalgic, so it’s incredibly tough. I’ve spent my career trying to perfect these kinds of dishes and I know from experience that creativity and perfection do not always sit comfortably together. I was amazed at how ambitious some of the cooks were.” Crazy Delicious will air on Channel 4 from early 2020.

Hoffa is best remembered for establishing the International Brotherhood of Teamsters into a powerful labour union, as well as his 1964 conviction for attempting to bribe a juror in a grand jury investigation and the controversial commutation of his sentence by Richard Nixon in 1971. According to lore, Hoffa was also sympathetic to the Zionist cause and helped smuggle arms and supplies to the Jewish community in Palestine prior to the establishment of the state of Israel. Where are the grown-ups? Author Ruth Badley appears in conversation with Kate Thompson in Finchley next week to discuss her narrative memoir, Where Are The Grown-Ups? Badley’s work is the compelling story of her maternal grandmother, a cigarette maker from London’s East End, who died aged 25 following childbirth in 1930 – and her subsequent search to uncover the truth. The author also discovers how this tragic death affected her baby, Badley’s mother, who was adopted as a newborn, for the rest of her life. Badley says: “The impact of my grandmother’s death had a profound impact on my family. Although this is my own story, the complexities and difficulties of family life that I write about will resonate with most people.” The event takes place at Finchley Church End Library, Regents Park Road, on Monday, 25 November, 6.30pm, bit.ly/31vcqnV

SEDRA Chayei Sarah BY RABBI NAFTALI SCHIFF It’s fascinating that the parsha describing Sarah’s death and burial is called Chayei Sara, the life of Sarah. Her age is given in a rather peculiar manner: “100 years, 20 years and seven years.” Rashi famously points out that at the ripe old age of 100, Sarah was as virtuous as a 20-year-old, with the innocent beauty of a seven-year-old. The verse concludes by repeating “the years of Sarah’s life” as if they were equal in their goodness. George Bernard Shaw once quipped: “Youth is wasted on the young.” When young, we are full of vibrancy and passion; we believe we can change the world for the better. As we get older, we tend to run out of steam and just keep chugging along the path we set for ourselves years before. But for Sarah, each day presented new challenges and opportunities and she approached each one with the vigour of a young woman. Abraham and Sarah were a dynamic couple, full of energy and devoted to the mission of changing the world. All too often we meet people who would love to make a difference, but remain ensconced in their comfort zone. In the Shema, we say the words, “asher anochi metsavcha hayom... hayom al levavecha”. We are commanded that God’s words should be new and fresh, upon our hearts, today and every day. Each day is a new experience, one that can and must remain fresh so we can harness our innate excitement to maximise the power and potential that lies within each moment. In that way, just like Abraham and Sarah, we can leave a legacy of a full life to build a brighter future.

What’s in a number?
24
REBBETZIN DINA GOLKER The number 24 is significant in Judaism for several reasons. First, it is the total of the number of books comprising the Tanach. There are five books of the Torah, eight of the Prophets and eleven of the Hagiographa. The Talmudic sages regarded all the prophetical books, besides Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, as a single unit, owing to their relative brevity. Ezra and Nehemiah were also regarded as one book, presumably because of their similarity of content. Twenty-four was also the total number of the ‘priestly watches’, or groups of Kohanim, performing the Temple sacrificial service in ancient times. Each group served for two weeks at a time, in a strictly rotational system.
This covered 48 weeks of the year, all the groups joining together for the remaining four weeks. During their service periods, the members of each group had exclusive rights to enjoy the Mattnot Kehunah – the 24 portions of the sacrificial offerings to which the Kohanim were halachically entitled.

This week’s digits...
Finally, Maimonides famously states in his Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Teshuva, that there are 24 distinct impediments to an individual doing teshuva. The first case given by Maimonides is of someone who causes the general public to sin. Such an individual’s teshuva is not accepted and this includes one who impedes the public from doing teshuva (repentance). The reasoning behind this is that it would be extremely unfair if those misled would stand condemned, while the individual ultimately responsible for their falling into sin were to escape punishment. Case number three in Maimonides’ list is one who sees his son developing evil traits and refrains from rebuking him or setting him on the right path. Again, such an individual cannot be allowed to do teshuva, because of the irreparable damage he has done to his own son. ◆ Dina Golker is assistant rebbetzin of St John’s Wood Synagogue

The Bible Says What? ‘Even God chooses flawed leaders’
What’s the Jewish approach to bargain hunting Black Friday?
BY SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD God’s will was communicated to the High Priest through the Urim and Thummim, the earliest recorded “voting device” and, generally in the Bible, leadership was not achieved by democratic decision, nor did God choose leaders without flaws. That said, the Bible does give us guidance about qualities in leaders, helping us to decide how to use our votes. Jethro advises Moses: “Provide from the entire people able people who fear God, trustworthy and hating bribes…to be their rulers” (Exodus 18), and Moses tells Israel: “Take from every tribe men of wisdom, understanding and knowledge, and... make them rulers over you” (Deut 1:13). The preference for anti-corruption candidates seems reasonable, but is it good for fear to play a key role in a leader’s personality – whether fearful or fearsome? Politicians are often accused of using fear as a distraction mechanism. In these examples we appear to see God, through the prophets, employing a similar tactic.
BY RABBI DANNY RICH
Hosea provides a picture of inappropriate government: “They have set up kings, but not from Me, made princes, and I knew it not; of their silver and gold have they made idols” and warns of the consequences. This suggests flawed leaders will inevitably come to the fore, and that only sound knowledge can check this. We also see the inevitability of corruption, which happens when people lose faith in leadership structures. Even when God played a hands-on role, good and bad leaders came to the fore. Today, we must distinguish between candidates, who, although made in the image of God, will inevitably be flawed. The Bible says active participation is an antidote to this inevitability: “When the wicked rise, people hide themselves away”. It is our mission to challenge this mentality and install the best leaders.
Black Friday is an American invention, which always falls on the last Friday in November, the day after the American holiday of Thanksgiving. Days of thankful celebration for the successful harvest were a custom of Native American peoples – a form of Succot – although since the end of the 18th century, Thanksgiving marked the creation of the modern American democratic constitution. Black Friday may have originated in Philadelphia on the date retailers began to make a profit (accounts, therefore, moving from ‘red’ to ‘black’), although it has now become the busiest shopping day of the year in western, capitalist societies. There is, of course, nothing in Judaism prohibiting an owner selling at a reduced price, but Black Friday is often associated with ‘loss leaders’ and hyperbolic claims that can lead to inappropriate purchasing, that at best may be wasteful and at worst may lead to cycles of debt.

Judaism teaches that selling and buying, in common with all spheres of life, ought be guided by moral principles and propriety. Jewish business ethics is a particular school of thought, but both seller and buyer have obligations that pre-date the invention of modern capitalism and the possibility of online shopping. The Book of Leviticus (25:14) declares: “If you sell to or buy from your neighbour, you shall not wrong one another”. From here arose the prohibition recorded by Maimonides that one must not cheat or deceive whether a seller or a buyer (Mishneh Torah Hilchot Mechirah 18:1), a sin
for which the individual Jew and the community confess on Yom Kippur. Unlike in English law, which stresses caveat emptor (buyer beware), Jewish law places a duty on the seller about quantity and quality, including the pointing out of flaws. The Holiness Code of Leviticus 19:36 demands: “…true scales, true weights, true dry and true liquid measures”. Buyers too, however, are bound by a code, including for example the Mishnaic (Baba Metzia 4:10) teaching that: “One should not ask, ‘How much is this thing?’ if one has no intention of buying, since to do so raises false expectations and wastes the time of the seller.” Black Friday is probably here to stay, but Judaism teaches that both seller and buyer have a duty to be careful and a responsibility to exercise action, in accord with the best moral principles Judaism lays down. CLAIRE STRAUS CAREER ADVISER
RESOURCE Dear Claire I’ve worked for 15 years, been promoted and done well, but am bored and want to change career direction. I feel stuck and don’t know how to do this. Please help. Helena Dear Helena What we do for a living is central to our life story and who we are, and changing careers is actually a process of changing identity. Career
transition is not usually a straight path towards a predetermined destiny, but more a process of tentative exploration where we try on many ‘possible selves’ we might become. First, the challenge of career change is that you need to ‘act’ before you ‘know’ as knowing is the result of doing and experimenting, and not only thinking. Draw up a list of possible new careers and changes to the way you work. Then identify projects that can help you get a feel for these e.g. side projects in your current organisation, voluntary work in new fields, temporary assignments, working more from home, taking on freelance projects etc. Studying may also be part of this. Second, learn from
others’ career journeys and interact with new networks and contacts. Connect with people in different fields and work communities to find out what you need to know and who can help, as you experiment with new professional activities. Link to potential role models and mentors who can support you and ease your career transition. Finally, find a space to reflect and make sense of the new emerging possibilities you discover. This is a period of experimenting, trying new things and learning — enjoy the journey towards your new career identity. Resource offers one-2-one advice and a seminar on Career Change, so call us on 020 8346 4000 or visit www.resource-centre.org

Dear Dov Israel is now a modern country, but the choice of furniture and white goods is still limited and generally more expensive than in Britain. If you buy in the UK, you will generally be able to reclaim the VAT on your purchases (we will assist) and there will, in most cases, be no VAT or import duty on their import into Israel using one of your ‘rights’. Your purchases must (under HMRC regulations) be delivered directly into your shipper (us we hope!). You must not ship gas barbeques or electric bicycles. Israeli customs do levy charges if you buy more than one each of the larger electrical appliances (but not
fridges) but these are often low enough to still make the purchase worthwhile. The laws often change so please do call me when you are ready to start buying and I will give you a current list of items that are banned from import or that will attract duty and/or VAT on import. Most of our clients ship new furniture and white goods when they make aliyah and, although you are generally allowed three duty- and VAT-free shipments into Israel, it pays to ship as much as possible at one time, rather than make multiple shipments.

Join Altermans Solicitors as a Consultant Over the last three years, six of us have joined Altermans as consultants – to work in property, company commercial, litigation, private client and family law. All of us have been partners elsewhere, and know the pain of running a team, hitting chargeable targets and driving revenue. However, each of us knew deep down that what we wanted to do was find somewhere where we could work for our clients in a friendly and supportive environment. We found it at Altermans in Finchley, North London. The firm is run by Gabriel Alterman, who is growing a business where lawyers can work on their own or build a small team that meets their needs. The firm is not a “virtual network”. We work together, talk together and respect each other’s expertise. We share fees, reward each other for referrals, and have regular gatherings – both social and work – to make sure we’re on track. If this sounds like a firm where you could find a niche and be at home, get in touch to arrange a chat and come and meet us. There’s no management-speak; just lawyers working together. You can contact Gabriel directly at gabriel@altermans.co.uk or by phone on 07794 085 617. Our website is at www.altermans.co.uk for more details of the firm.

while you’re on the move – all this without having to take your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. The 422GW is available for £129 (RRP) from high street shops and online.
TO BE IN WITH A CHANCE OF WINNING THIS AMAZING PRIZE, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION: The 422GW dash cam has which of the following features? A. Alexa voice control and Emergency SOS system B. Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi C. All of the above

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THE JEWISH COMMUNITY THIS GENERAL ELECTION? ENCOURAGE YOUR LOCAL CANDIDATES TO SUPPORT THE TEN COMMITMENTS: • WHEN CANDIDATES KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR • BY EMAILING OR PHONING THEIR OFFICES • AT HUSTINGS HAPPENING IN YOUR LOCAL AREA (Q&A)
HUSTINGS Hustings meetings are an opportunity to hear from the different candidates and parties. They often take the form of a debate. They represent a fantastic opportunity to question your local candidates on the issues most important to you. Hustings are being arranged for Jewish communities across the UK. We are aware of meetings happening in the following constituencies:
• BRENT NORTH • BURY SOUTH • CHEADLE • CHIPPING BARNET • CITIES OF LONDON AND WESTMINSTER • EAST RENFREWSHIRE • ENFIELD SOUTHGATE • FINCHLEY AND GOLDERS GREEN • HAMPSTEAD AND KILBURN • HARROW EAST
• HENDON • HERTSMERE • HORNSEY AND WOOD GREEN • HOVE • ILFORD NORTH • RUISLIP, NORTHWOOD AND PINNER • SOUTHPORT • WATFORD • WESTMINSTER NORTH
You can find further information about the hustings at www.bod.org.uk/hustings2019 Please let us know if you are organising a hustings meeting that has not been listed, and we will be very glad to promote it. THE TEN COMMITMENTS TO SUMMARISE THE COMMUNITY’S POSITIONS ON A NUMBER OF KEY POLICY AREAS, THE BOARD OF DEPUTIES OF BRITISH JEWS HAS DRAWN UP THE FOLLOWING COMMITMENTS. PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR LOCAL PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATES TO SHARE THEIR SUPPORT FOR THESE TEN COMMITMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA WITH THE HASHTAG #TENCOMMITMENTS TWITTER: @BOARDOFDEPUTIES
WE WOULD ASK OUR PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDS TO:
1
Oppose extremism and hate crime, including antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred and other forms of hate. Adopt, promote and implement the full IHRA Definition of Antisemitism.
6
Take account of the possible implications of Brexit for the Jewish community and other minority groups, including community cohesion, security and religious freedoms.
2
Promote good relations, understanding and cooperation between all the UK’s communities.
7
Affirm the importance of schools of religious character within the education system.
3
Defend the right to a Jewish way of life, including kosher meat, religious clothing, circumcision, and flexible working to accommodate Shabbat and Holy Day observance.
8
Support the provision of religiously and culturally sensitive youth and social care services.
4
Support efforts to remember and understand the Holocaust and strive to prevent any future genocide.
9
5
Promote peace projects that unite communities and resist boycotts that divide communities, advocating for a permanent and comprehensive solution to the IsraeliPalestinian conflict that results in a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state.
10
Promote a more just and sustainable future in the UK and abroad, supporting efforts to tackle poverty, climate change and human rights abuses.
Celebrate and support Jewish heritage and cultural institutions.
