Corbyn exits, stage (far) left

Car workers in Birmingham, shopkeepers in Sedgefield, market traders in Norwich, steelworkers in Sheffield, greengrocers in Great Yarmouth, fishmongers in Falmouth, bus drivers in Bolsover, waitresses in Workington. In the end, after all the fear and doubt, the message rang far and wide and loud and clear, from the cities to the shires, to every nook and cranny of our salt-ofthe-earth nation: Jeremy Corbyn is a dangerous lightweight with obscene associations. An extremist in sheep’s clothing, whose apathy to anti-Jewish racism is incompatible with the British values we hold dear. So the good people of Britain held their noses, crossed their fingers, adopted the brace position and voted… for anyone but Corbyn. Singing socialist Billy Bragg said it best in his 80s anthem Between The Wars: “Sweet moderation, heart of this nation.” Dear old Blighty, we should never have doubted you. Yet who was to know the result would be so emphatic? As the clock lurched towards 10pm stomachs knotted, palms sweated, brows furrowed. Surely even a semi-functioning opposition could

eek out a hung Parliament against these unpopular threeterm Tories. Surely? In those edgy moments before the exit poll, the blunt question asked across Shabbat dinner tables for the last four years was asked one last time: does Britain really care about antisemitism? It certainly turned voters off in the Bagel Belt of Hendon, Chipping Barnet and Finchley and Golders Green, where the Conservatives secured an unlikely clean sweep. Elsewhere, it played a leading role. But above all, this red-letter election required two democratic duties of voters: reject extreme socialism and respect Brexit. It could have been so different. Had Corbyn not sat on the fence over Brexit and sat on his hands over Jew-hate, he would have sneaked a hung Parliament and cobbled a coalition. Instead he exits, head in hands, stage left. The future, thank goodness, ain’t what it used to be. The Jewish community and Labour Party share a long and storied history. Now it’s time to repair that proud partnership. Indeed, there are already red shoots of recovery with the Jewish Labour Movement reporting hundreds of former members have returned since last Thursday. Continued on page 18

TORIES TOLD: ‘AVOID SAME MISTAKES’ The Conservatives have been urged to “avoid making the same mistakes” as Labour by British Jews, as the party conducts its review into racism. The president of the Board of Deputies made the appeal after it was announced the Tories will conduct a review into handling of complaints of discrimination and prejudice – including Islamophobia. The move comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologised during the General Election campaign for “the hurt and offence” caused to the Muslim community by Islamophobia.

GOVE: JEWS SHOULD NEVER LIVE IN FEAR Michael Gove said British Jews “should never have to live in fear again” after Boris Johnson led the Conservatives to an historic win, with Labour facing its worst electoral defeat since 1935. Gove, who secured 34,358 votes, addressed a rally in Surrey Heath hours after Jeremy Corbyn announced he would not lead the Labour Party at the next election. Gove said to applause from supporters: “You have had to live in fear for months now. You should never have to live in fear again.”

Fourth-term Freer edges out Berger Re-elected Conservative MP Mike Freer thanked Jewish supporters for “standing by me” as he paid tribute to Lib Dem opponent Luciana Berger. Freer extended his majority to more than 6,500 after a contest that split the local Jewish community. Berger, who left Labour earlier this year over antisemitism, came second after a campaign backed by a number of highprofile figures during which she increased the Lib Dem vote to a record 17,600 in the seat. Labour’s Ross Houston came third with 13347 votes. Expressing “delight” at being re-elected for a fourth term, Freer said it had been an “emotionally draining” campaign but a “good humoured and decent“ contest. Polls during the campaign had given a mixed picture of the likely outcome, but the exit poll predicted a victory for the former MP for Liverpool

Conservative candidates were re-elected in Chipping Barnet and Hendon – with former Cabinet minister Theresa Villiers defying polls to claim a narrow victory of 25,745 over her Labour opponent’s 24,533. Villiers, who had been widely expected to lose her seat, paid tribute to her campaign team and used her victory speech to pledge to continue the fight against antisemitism and racism. The MP, who served as environment minister under Boris Johnson before the election, also prioritised the protection of green spaces and fighting climate change.

Lord Sacks, in a debate in the House of Lords, said for antisemitism to become a problem in society three things have to happen. First, antisemitism spreads from the fringes to a mainstream political party. Second, that those who oppose it are vilified and shouted down. Finally, that the party’s support is not diminished by the row. At 10pm on 12 December the British people passed the test by rejecting Labour, in part due to Corbyn’s failure to address the problem. I hope Labour will react constructively and at last expel the malign influence that has done so much to damage. This movement from the shadows into broad daylight of antisemitism explains the present Government’s decision not to try and contain the evil but to push back against it. The boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement has not been much of a success in discouraging trade between the UK and Israel.

Since the foundation of BDS trade between our two countries has grown to the benefit of all. However, there has always been a strong element of of wink-wink nudgenudge racism about BDS. Not so much about the dispute over contested territories but more about disrupting Israel from the river to the sea. Individuals remain free to boycott Israeli goods if they choose to do so. But henceforth the government will ensure that public bodies will be legally excluded from doing so. The government will continue with its commitment to support the Community Security Trust to ensure the safety of Jewish citizens. Similarly, the substantial support to Holocaust remembrance and education will be there. Over the past decade, Israel and the UK have grown use to working together. I doubt there has ever been a more pro Israeli cabinet than the present one. In an uncertain world our cooperation is a great point of strength. To quote the prime minister, the best is yet to come.

She added: “I’ll continue to do all I can to fight antisemitism. I call on Labour during this period of reflection to root out antisemitism. They haven’t done so.” In the neighbouring constituency of Hendon, colleague Matthew Offord had a more convincing victory of 26,878 over Labour’s David Pinto-Duschinsky, who recorded 22,648 votes. Offord complained of “disgraceful” behaviour during the campaign, and said it was “probably the worst election” he had ever fought, with people focusing on “personalities rather than policies”.

LANSMAN: NO RUSH FOR CORBYN TO GO Momentum founder Jon Lansman said the decision on when Labour should replace Jeremy Corbyn as party leader doesn’t need to be taken “until the new year”. Lansman said Corbyn has “achieved a great deal” on issues such as austerity, and that the election was “incredibly polarised because of Brexit”. He added: “Jeremy has to decide when he is leaving himself. He has always been a reluctant leader. I don’t think he’ll overstay his welcome.”

DROPPED CANDIDATE WINS ELECORAL SEAT An SNP candidate dropped over alleged antisemitic comments won a Westminster seat despite the party’s withdrawal of support. Neale Hanvey was the SNP candidate for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, but was dropped in the run-up to the poll after old social media posts came to light. However, Hanvey’s name remained on the ballot paper next to the SNP logo as the deadline for candidates to be nominated had passed. He took the seat from shadow Scottish secretary Lesley Laird, winning 16,568 votes to Labour’s 15,325. He will sit as an independent until a disciplinary process is concluded.

Former Labour MP Ruth Smeeth, who lost her Stoke on Trent North seat to her Conservative opponent last week, said she is “devastated” by the result – not for herself but for her constituents. Smeeth said she did not regret her decision to stay and fight and pointed out that the antisemitism issue “came up on every fifth doorstep during my campaign. People were aware of it, not just in the Jewish community but nationally”. She added: “I beg everyone in the Jewish community to join the Jewish Labour Movement in the coming days, to have a voice in the leadership elec-

tion”. She said it was vital to “change the culture” of the Labour Party, and warned that if it did not change, “we will have to ask, what is the point of Labour? “We all knew this [defeat] was coming but I don’t think anyone quite anticipated the scale of it. It raises all the questions that we should have been talking about for years now. Every political experiment that the leadership has tried over the last four years has been shown to be a complete and utter failure. You reap what you sow.” There was even more need to stay

in the party now, Smeeth insisted. “I have huge respect for the people who chose to leave, but my decision was clear. I think the idea that I could walk away and leave the battlefield and allow my party, without challenge, to become a party of racists and cranks, was not an option which I felt I could explore. I will still be there, during the leadership contest and beyond, to try to fix the mess Jeremy Corbyn and his mates created in my party.” With sadness, the former MP spoke of packing up her London office, making her staff redundant and wondering what

would become of her constituents who needed help which she was no longer legally able to offer. She added: “I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet. I’m taking some time off at the end of the month but I will be coming back fitter and ready to fight”. She said she planned on working with one of her former colleagues if they declared themselves for the leadership, adding that “Continuity Corbyn” — in the person of Rebecca Long-Bailey — was “not acceptable for the future of the Labour Party. Rebecca has spoken out on antisemitism in the last 12 months, but she has not been in the forefront of the fight. I need someone who is prepared to have this fight, to sack the staff that failed so miserably to deal with this internally”.

Left-wing group vows to stand against racism and inequality

Young left-wing Jewish activists have vowed to mobilise after Boris Johnson led the Conservatives to a clear election majority. The group Jews Against Boris, which canvassed for Johnson’s Labour challenger Ali Milani in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, described last week’s general election result as “heartbreaking and terrifying”.

The group warned against what it said was the prime minister’s “embrace of the far-right” in a “crisis which threatens all of us.” “We take some comfort in the knowledge that while politicians and the media have sowed fear and division during this campaign, together we showed that real solidarity is possible. That oppression need not be a zero-sum game,” the

statement said. Vowing to mobilise the community to “show up for victims of racism, inequality and bigotry”, it adds: “We will not tolerate people using the Jewish community as a scapegoat for [the] results, just as we will not tolerate our communal institutions failing to stand up for those most vulnerable to the Conservatives’ victory.”

WILLIAMSON LOSES ELECTION DEPOSIT Chris Williamson, who resigned from Labour after being suspended over allegations of antisemitism, lost his seat in Derby North where he stood as an independent after his former party declined to endorse him. Williamson was defeated by the Conservatives’ Amanda Solloway, who gained the seat with 21,259 votes. Williamson garnered a mere 635 votes – losing his deposit. On Tuesday he claimed “a hostile foreign government has mobilised its assets in UK”, apparently in reference to Israel.

LIVINGSTONE HITS OUT AT ‘JEWISH VOTE’ Ken Livingstone identified “the Jewish vote” as a contributory factor in Labour’s poor showing. The ex-London mayor, who quit the party last year amid a torrent of allegations of antisemitic behaviour against him, told the PA news agency: “The Jewish vote wasn’t very helpful. Jeremy should have tackled that issue far earlier than he did.” Livingstone was suspended in 2016 after claiming in a radio interview Hitler had supported Zionism in the 1930s.

‘History won’t look kindly on Corbyn’ Jewish groups this week soberly reflected on the Labour Party’s worst election defeat in 80 years, writes Mathilde Frot. Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl warned history would not be favourable to the outgoing Labour leader. She said: “When he eventually steps back, history will not look kindly on Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party, where anti-Jewish racism has been allowed to run amok and some at the highest levels of the party have appeared to collude to protect antisemites. “We urge the next leader to act quickly to implement the steps repeatedly recommended by Jewish communal groups to begin solving this crisis.” She added: “We hope the prime minister will use his new mandate to bring the country together, and put an end to the toxicity and prejudice, which has become too regular a feature of our politics.” A statement from the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) urged Corbyn and his allies to take responsibility “for Labour’s moral and political failures” and “for allowing five more years of Tory rule”. It added that “the results will do nothing to heal a divided country and instead

Meanwhile, Jonathan Goldstein, chair of the Jewish Leadership Council, congratulated the government on its election win, saying: “This general election has been difficult for all of us. It has been especially challenging for Jews, but we are not the only community to have expressed sincere fears about the direction of British politics and society. “We hope our country’s politicians, from all parties, will now do their utmost to demonstrate respect for all British citizens, and for the values upon which our democracy depends.” Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, whose unprecedented intervention in The Times last month drew wide media coverage, called for unity. “We conferred upon our Members of Parliament the heavy responsibility of answering the profound social and economic challenges that our country faces,” he tweeted. “Islamophobia, racism and other forms of prejudice continue to afflict our communities and, as has been well publicised, even our political parties. We must focus on our shared values and leave all hatred and prejudice far behind us.”

A newly-elected Jewish Labour MP has defended saying Nazi-saluting football fans should “get their heads kicked in”. Warrington North’s new member of Parliament, Charlotte Nichols, came under criticism after appearing to advocate violence in tweets sent before she was elected. This comes after the MP, who converted to Judaism, responded to a video of football fans from the Italian club Lazio, performing Nazi salutes in October ahead of their clash with Celtic. She wrote: “I hope every single one of them gets their heads kicked in by the good folk of Glasgow.” Asked by BBC correspondent Phil McCann whether she stood by her comments, she said: “These were people doing Nazi salutes on the streets of Britain. As a Jewish person whose grandfather fought in the Second World War, ultimately sometimes I believe that fascism has to be physically confronted as it was at Cable Street and elsewhere. “Obviously as someone who is now an elected public official, naturally your language is going to be different from being an ordinary member of the public. Sometimes I believe that fascism has to be physically confronted.”

Almost 90 peers have urged Baroness Tonge to apologise after she claimed the Chief Rabbi “must be dancing in the street” after the election, which she said was won by “the pro-Israel lobby”, writes Jack Mendel. The former Liberal Democrat politician, who quit the party after being suspended in 2016, wrote on Facebook on Thursday: “The Chief Rabbi must be dancing in the street. The proIsrael lobby won our general election by lying about Jeremy Corbyn.” In response, 88 peers, including the government’s Special Envoy for post-Holocaust issues and co-chair of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation, Lord Eric Pickles, accused her of breaching the international definition of antisemitism. Writing in The Telegraph, the peers said: “She has brought Parliament into disrepute and we demand that she withdraws her remarks and issues a full and unqualified apology.” Tonge told Jewish News: “It was extraordinary for the Chief Rabbi, who only represents about half of synagogue attending Jews, to endorse such political statements. He must have been very pleased with the result. I am sorry, however, if some people are offended by the thought of the Chief Rabbi dancing in the street. It was a light-hearted remark.”

However, she is quick to rebuke those who deny Israel’s right to exist, and spoke at a Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) rally a couple of years ago.

A supporter of Israel, Emily Thornberry has, however, urged the government to recognise the State of Palestine. She also opposed the UK’s decision to veto every Human Rights Council (HRC) resolution on Israel under the ever-present Agenda Item 7, arguing that, by the same logic, the UK would have vetoed all resolutions on South African apartheid and on Chile under General Pinochet. In private, she speaks warmly about Israel, but strongly dislikes Netanyahu’s government.

Jess Phillips has been one of the loudest Labour critics of Jeremy Corbyn over the party’s handling of antisemitism, and has made no secret of her dislike for the outgoing party leader. Unlike most other leadership contenders on this list, she is a member of Labour Friends of Israel, and hails from the “soft-left” of the party. She has even been accused by Labour members of being “paid by the Israel lobby”. She criticised the deportation from Israel of Human Right Watch director Omar Shakir as “silencing human rights voices” and last year pushed the government to do more to help make medical equipment available in Gaza.

BY SADIQ KHAN MAYOR OF LONDON I want to start with an apology. I’m sorry my political party, the Labour Party, let down the Jewish community so catastrophically. I’m sorry so many Jewish voters felt betrayed by a party they used to think was their political home. And I’m sorry that despite constant efforts by me and others to put pressure on Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour leadership, the poison of antisemitism was allowed to take root. The post-mortem about why Labour lost the election in such a devastating fashion is now in full swing, with many different theories. But we know one thing with absolute clarity: Labour failed to deal with antisemitism and failed the Jewish community. I’ve been a member of the party since I was 15. A big

part of why I first joined was because I saw Labour as the best vehicle to break down barriers of discrimination I experienced growing up. So I find it utterly shameful and heart-breaking that, rather than being an ally and defending the Jewish community, Labour has come to be seen as a threat. Labour must now fundamentally change and seek to gain the trust of the Jewish community once again, however long it takes. We have a moral duty to ensure we never again go into an election with a community feeling excluded and threatened. We must make Labour a hostile environment for antisemites rather than one where they thrive. The next Labour leader must bring an end to this appalling chapter.

Just days after the Labour Party’s crushing election defeat, the Jewish Labour Movement claimed hundreds of “new and returning members” are joining up, with many again considering membership of the party, writes Jack Mendel. Academic David Hirsh, who quit in February after three decades, said Labour should “beg Luciana Berger, Joan Ryan and Louise Ellman to re-join” to regain trust with the community. “It needs to apologise to them, find them safe seats and invite them to head an inquiry into antisemitism. That would be a start.”

Others decided Jeremy Corbyn’s impending resignation is enough to entice them back. Deputy on the Board of Deputies, Joe Millis, had been in the party for more than 20 years, but left “the day Corbyn was elected leader in 2015. You can’t have worked in the Jewish community for 20-odd years without knowing who he is and who his friends are. I’ve re-joined now because I want to help rebuild the party and bring it back to the centre left where it belongs.” Tal Ofer, an ex-Labour candidate in

local elections left in July 2018 after nine years in the party, said there is now a “clear dilemma whether and when to rejoin.” He added: “For the time being I’m not comfortable while Jeremy Corbyn still clings on. We still don’t know what the outcome will be of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee investigation, and it’s not clear which one of the moderate MP have the best chance to defeat the pro-Corbyn candidates.” Former president of the Union of Jewish Students Hannah Rose quit in 2018. She said: “Although I’d be excited to re-join

ing to JLM my political home under the right leadership, under current rules I’m excluded for five years as I campaigned for (Lib Dem) Luciana Berger at the election. Unless this is overturned, it will amount to punishing Jewish people for the choices they were forced to make due to the party’s institutional racism.” However, Noah Libson, who left Labour in September 2018 after being a member for three years, warned that not even a change of leader would necessarily solve the problems. “The issues that led to the antisemitism crisis haven’t disappeared. I can’t be a member of a Labour Party led by Jeremy Corbyn. When a new leader takes over, and they prove to the Jewish community they are committed to eradicating antisemitism from the party, I’ll reconsider”. Yet for Birmingham-based Ian Robathan and journalist Sophie Wilkinson, coming back to their former party was a natural step after Labour’s decimation at the polls. Robathan was a Labour member for 25 years, but quit in February 2018. He said: “Last Thursday I watched the results and realised I was happy we lost. It was weird - and I worked out it was because I never wanted Corbyn as PM.”

“I re-joined on Sunday because we have to fight this evil within the party as there is no alternative and support people who stayed like Alex Sobel, Louise Ellman and Margaret Hodge.” After joining Labour in 2015, journalist Wilkinson left in the wake of Ken Livingstone’s comments about Hitler and Zionists. The granddaughter of refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe, she said: “I’m not a practising Jew but I’ve never felt so Jewish as in the past few years.” She said Livingstone’s comments didn’t differentiate “between Jews who go to shul and who are just ethnically Jewish. Whether they all wished to believe it or not, Labour let down all Jews.” But, she returned “because I trust that with a new leader, Labour’s antisemitism will be better dealt with or disappear. I want to be part of the movement to get Labour back to adequately representing the left.” Law professor John Strawson quit in July 2017. He had been a member for over 30 years and first campaigned for Labour as a 16 year old in 1964, but added that re-joining would be conditional on Corbyn quitting “immediately” or if the Parliamentary Labour Party “removes him”.

At least he turned up for the interview, but sorry seemed to be the hardest word for Labour’s leader when pressed repeatedly by Andrew Neil to apologise for his failure to tackle antisemitism. He’s not the only one who should be saying sorry. Every single one of us needs to apologise for what we’ve put the Jewish community through. The extraordinary intervention of the Chief Rabbi in the election debate underlined how serious this crisis is. Even so, our leadership responded by attacking the intervention. The question was ‘What is he doing?’ when it should have been ‘What have we done?’ During the election campaign I wrote to my constituents who raised antisemitism with me and tried to reach as many of them by phone to say sorry and reassure them that even if not a single Jewish person voted for me, my commitment to this community and my determination to fight this cancer in our party would be undiminished. I meant it. This is about values, not votes. As well as apologising, I owe you an explanation as to why I stood for re-election under a Labour. Labour has existed for more than 100 years. It existed before Corbyn and it will exist beyond. It has a much better chance of

returning as a mainstream centre-left force for good so long as Labour’s centre-left members don’t abandon it. I expect both of our main political parties to take racism seriously, but I hold my own party to a higher standard because I expect us to be better. That’s what our values demand. The country deserved better than the choice we gave you at this election. I accept my share of responsibility for that, too. We can’t expect forgiveness, but we can try and earn it.

Half of Jewish Spurs fans want rid of ‘Yid’

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has revealed its summer survey into fans’ use of the Y-word in stadium songs showed large numbers of Jewish fans hate hearing it, writes Adam Decker. Findings from the consultation were revealed this week, showing up to half of Jewish Spurs fans would like to see a change, preferring that other fans stop using it or chant it less. But it also showed that, among Jewish respondents, 36 percent “regularly” used the Y-word in stadium chants and 30 percent “occasionally” did, while 34 percent never used it. The north London club, which is chaired by Jewish businessman Daniel Levy and co-owned by Levy and Jewish billionaire Joe Lewis, started its consultation in August and said this week it had received 23,000 responses. The Y-word derives from the club’s Jewish heritage dating back almost a century to a time when many of the city’s Jews had recently arrived from Central and Eastern Europe. Fans, including Jewish supporters, say they identify as the “Yid Army” as a term of affection, but other British

CYPRUS RAPE CASE TEEN MUST REMAIN A British teenager on trial accused of lying about being gang-raped in Cyprus must remain on the island over Christmas after a judge postponed the verdict. The 19-year-old is charged with public mischief for allegedly falsely claiming she was attacked by up to 12 Israeli tourists in an Ayia Napa hotel on 17 July. She insists she was raped but pressured by Cypriot police to make a retraction statement 10 days later. She had hoped a verdict would be delivered after the judge heard closing arguments at Famagusta District Court in Paralimni last Thursday, but he adjourned the case until 30 December.

SCHOOL RAISES £850K IN 36 HOURS Supporters of North West London Jewish Day School raised a staggering £850,000 in just 36 hours this week. The Jewish primary school in Brent benefitted from matching donations which only kick in when the total got to £375,000, which is what the school says it needs to secure its future. The nail-biting countdown was set up amid warnings that cuts could affect its Jewish studies curriculum. An incredible £100,000 was raised in the first hour. The funds will go towards the state school’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) support and other key areas.

I don’t believe most Spurs fans understand its connotations and history.” When respondents were asked whether they would like to see the use of the Y-word change on match days, 23 percent said they would like fans to choose to chant it less, whereas 22 percent said they would like to see fans stop using it altogether. Two teenagers have been charged after an anti-Semitic attack on a senior rabbi. Theattackers shouted “F*** Jews”, “Dirty Jew” and “Kill the Jews” as he walked through Amhurst Park in Clapton, north London, at around 9.45pm on Friday November 29. The Metropolitan Police, who released CCTV images of the two suspects, said the boys, aged 14 and 15, had handed themselves in during the early hours of Tuesday. The pair presented themselves at an east London police station after being recognised by a relative from the police images, the force said. They are being held in custody. The 54-year-old victim, who has not been named, had travelled to the UK from Israel to attend a wedding and has since returned home. Jewish neighbourhood patrol group Shomrim said the rabbi had left the Bobov Synagogue in Egerton Road and

The suspect made antisemitic comments before verbally abusing a group of teenage girls.

The club said fans’ use of the term in chants was “to deflect antisemitic abuse” they received from rival fans in the 1970s and 1980s, but acknowledged there was now less agreement as to whether that is still the case. “It would appear the history and motivations behind why fans adopted the

term are being lost over time, with many fans today using it solely as a means to identify themselves as a Spurs supporter,” it said. The club also said almost half of respondents felt fans’ use of the Y-word “contributed to a lack of clarity in terms of what is now considered antisemitic abuse” and that there would be “focus groups, giving supporters the chance to exchange opinions with fans” with diverse views.

RABBIS AND NHS CHIEFS TALK ORGAN DONATION NHS bosses met 25 rabbis from London’s Orthodox community in Stamford Hill this week to discuss concerns regarding the opt-out system of organ donation due to take effect next year. The meeting was arranged by the Jewish Community Council (JCC) and attended by senior practitioners at the Department of Health and NHS Blood and Transplant. “They received rabbinical guidance on organ donation,” said JCC director Levi Schapiro. “A number of issues were raised. They tried to reassure us that Jews would not have their organs donated unless they had clearly stated they wanted to.” Dr Dale Gardiner, national clinical lead for organ donation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We were

grateful for the opportunity to discuss the opt-out system for organ donation with rabbis from the Orthodox Jewish community.” He added: “Ongoing dialogue with leaders across all faiths is important to us as we know that many people will have questions about how their faith is respected when families are approached about organ donation and if [it] goes ahead after a loved one dies. “We hope that by explaining how the opt-out system will work, the various choices available to people, the vital role families play and the ways in which we ensure beliefs are respected, will have reassured them that the decisions of individuals and their families will remain paramount when the system comes into effect.”

British-Israeli research project Israeli and British university researchers have agreed to collaborate on cutting-edge cyber security and artificial intelligence (AI) work with a special interest in “smart cities” and the networks that support them. The Ben-Gurion University (BGU) of the Negev and the University of Bristol pledged to work together on a formal basis after a successful series of joint research projects between BGU’s professor Yaron Wolfsthal and Bristol’s prof. Dimitra Simeonidou. Both institutions, which signed a Memorandum of Understanding last week, are world leaders in the fields,

with Bristol pioneering research to support the 5G telecoms rollout and BGU working with IT giant IBM on smart city design. BGU vice-president Limor Aharonson-Daniel said the formal collaboration would include bidding for joint research projects, organising joint lectures and seminars, and exchanging students, faculty and staff. “This groundbreaking research collaboration between two outstanding universities positions the UK and Israel at the leading edge of cyber security and AI research worldwide,” said British Ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan.

2020 vision could see a second Arab Spring Next year, the crown will fall from Benjamin Netanyahu’s head and there will be the very real prospect of another ‘Arab Spring’ say Middle East analysts, writes Adam Decker. In a forecasting report published today, researchers at UK-Israel think tank BICOM said 2020 would be the year in which Israel’s prime minister finally loses power to his former Israel Defense Force (IDF) army chief, while Arab countries on Israel’s border will descend into chaos. They said the likelihood of an “Arab Spring 2.0” emanates from civil strife in Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, a splintering war in Yemen, governance issues in Jordan and Egypt, and a controversial modernisation campaign in Saudi Arabia. The report also recognises that Russia is now the dominant military power in the region, following its decisive intervention in Syria and Donald Trump’s US withdrawal, as evidenced by his decision to let Turkey clear Kurdish areas by force. BICOM said Iran would tread water in the hope that Trump serves only one term, but noted how Tehran became far more aggressive midway through this year, attacking vital shipping lanes, US drones and Saudi Arabia’s oil installations.

BOYCOTTS TO BE ILLEGAL The new Conservative government is set to make it illegal for public bodies to boycott Israel, according to a former minister. News of the move came from Lord Eric Pickles, the UK’s special envoy for post-Holocaust issues, who was speaking at the International Institute for Strategic Dialogue’s conference in Jerusalem on Sunday and called them ‘antisemitic’. The Conservatives vowed to pass laws banning councils from choosing not to buy products from Israel, a move opposed as antidemocratic by the Labour Party, but given last week’s thumping election win the Conservatives are set to go ahead.

While Israeli airstrikes against Iranian interests in Syria were expected to continue, regional watchers felt neither country wanted to risk escalating their conflict to all-out war. However, Israel and its allies know Iran is well capable of defending itself with the new Hoveizeh cruise missile (with a range of 1,350km), the Dezful ballistic missile (1,000 km) and the Khorramshahr ballistic missile (up to 2,000 km). Of more concern to the IDF is Iran’s ambition of turning Yemen and Iraq into launch sites for missiles aimed at Israel.

Both countries have vast swathes controlled by local forces loyal to Tehran. Iranian missiles stationed in Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen would present an overwhelming threat. Domestically, BICOM said Netanyahu’s tenure would end in 2020, adding that a new leader – probably ex-IDF chief Benny Gantz – could rebuild trust with Israel’s neighbour Jordan, whose king’s patience Netanyahu has tested to the limit. Following Israel’s next election on 2 March BICOM said there would be a unity government without Netanyahu.

The umbrella group for Scottish Jewry is to undertake another survey to understand how society’s increasing polarisation is affecting Jews north of the border. It will be the third big survey by the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC) in recent years. The latest temperature check was announced this week after SCoJeC secured funding. It said it was being undertaken “in the context of an increasingly polarised society where antisemitism has become a familiar topic of discussion both in the media and in the political arena”.

Anti-Israel activist loses attempt to prevent appeal Former Labour Party activist Tony Greenstein has lost a bid to stop his appeal hearing against a trade union — and ended up facing court costs of £4,000, writes Jenni Frazer. He had initially sought damages of £20,000 against the union, a sum he admitted in court was a “back-of-the-envelope” calculation. Brighton-based Tony Greenstein (pictured), who was a member of the union’s Local Government branch, took Unison to the High Court last Wednesday, representing himself. He joined the union in 1996, but was suspended in 2018 after a disciplinary panel ruled against him over

an allegation of misconduct, made by Unison official Steve Terry. He was suspended for three years with the loss of all membership rights, but was able to appeal. However, Greenstein heard nothing for months from the union about his appeal, and assumed the matter had been dropped, and that he was still a member in good standing. He told the court: “I wasn’t suggesting the appeal had been upheld, rather that it had been abandoned.” However, in June, Greenstein tried to attend the annual general meeting of the War on Want charity, which was held at

Unison’s headquarters, but was prevented from entering. He also heard from the union that the appeal process against his three-year suspension would be held in Brighton on 16 December. He applied for an injunction to prevent the appeal going ahead, arguing it would be “against natural justice” to hold it after such a long time. He said he had not been given access to the investigating panel’s notes from the original disciplinary hearing, and questioned why Terry had not been called as a witness. Mrs Justice Eady said the court “would not micromanage” proceedings and said she was “fully in favour of letting the appeal run its course”.

It seems unlikely, but by the time the Equality and Human Rights Commission publishes its inquiry into Labour antisemitism next year, the party needs to have a leader on the right side of history – able to take decisive action against racism the moment it rears its sneaky head. Fail and Labour is doomed to remain outside the political mainstream for years to come. Meanwhile, the community has said farewell to some of its most eloquent voices in Parliament. Luciana Berger, Ian Austin, John Mann, Louise Ellman, Joan Ryan and Ruth Smeeth all lost their seats or moved on. Their absence will be sharply felt by all who hold the British Jewry and Israel dear.

In my area of south Liverpool, someone left graffiti “Israel is the problem” on some hoarding, but I doubt they know what’s going on in Kirby, let alone the Middle East.

Today, after years of uncertainty and stress, I no longer have to worry about Corbyn; I felt everything I had ever worked towards was about to be wiped out for me and my kids. However, nothing disturbs me more than Jews diametrically opposing each other so in this new chapter I recommend the Jewish Labour Movement, too, has a deep clean and finds itself a viable unified narrative. Extremists rarely prevail Last week’s election result was doubtless greeted with relief by the vast majority of British Jews. The thought of Jeremy Corbyn, a far-left leader with a worldview embracing conspiratorial antisemitism and anti-Zionism, becoming the UK’s next prime minister caused understandable fear and anxiety within the community. Labour was defeated, at least in part, because a mass of ordinary, decent and patriotic voters sensed that the party had become toxic owing to its leader’s association with terrorists, antisemites and rogue regimes.

History will show extremists and their fellow travellers have rarely succeeded in British electoral politics. Labour can only be fully rejuvenated by discarding those who preach hatred and intolerance and once again embracing its Jewish citizens. After all, Britain’s minorities are part of our national success story and none should be thrown under the bus by any political party.

We have found our voice and won’t be silent again JONATHAN GOLDSTEIN CHAIRMAN, JLC

eneral Elections are always tense – tense for the country, tense for those for who the stakes are high. And at this election, the stakes were certainly high for the Jewish community who were worried about what our future would look like with a hostile inhabitant in Number 10. We have always raised the issue of antiJewish racism in politics but that increased when Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the Labour Party and instances of hostility increased exponentially. Indeed, we took the unprecedented action of taking to Parliament Square to protest what we believed was a culture of racism towards Jews from within the Labour party. Many joined, both from inside and – gratefully – from outside the Jewish community. This was a moment to behold. The British Jewish community protesting on the streets against racism from the Government’s opposition.

But for all those who stood by us and were pleased to see us put our heads above the parapet, many were worried that our approach was too aggressive and that it may in fact increase the instances of antisemitism. I have been clear from the beginning. You don’t half fight a war. We have a duty to expose the racism and to challenge it. An increase in hostility towards the Jewish community – while a legitimate concern - is not a justified reason to stay quiet. Indeed, my belief was that even if the level of animosity towards the community increased, it would be far worse if we allowed the Labour party’s antisemitism to go unchecked. Our approach has been vindicated by polling we conducted which showed that only two percent of the electorate felt increased hostility towards Jews as a result of the exposure. Far more – 20 percent – were concerned about the increase in racism in politics. Amid all the gloom, the silver lining has been the way the community has come together to say no. And if we feared that only Jews care about antisemitism, I have been blown away by the allyship outside of the

FOR THOSE WHO FEEL RELIEF AT THE ELECTION RESULT I SAY, THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER community. I can only say thank you to all those who listened, understood and stood by us. I am pleased they number too many to list. But for all those who feel relief at the fact that Number 10 is not occupied by people who are hostile to us, I say that the fight is not over. The Labour party is still the party of opposition and still infected with the poison of antisemitism. For all the self-described moderates left in the party, they have serious questions about how they regain control of the party, if indeed that is possible. In April 2018 we made it clear what steps the party needed to take to deal with the issue. Alas, those steps remain untaken. Since then, a

formal inquiry into institutional racism by the EHRC has been logged. This is ongoing. As well as the practical things the party can do, they have to think about how they can regain the trust of the Jewish community. I don’t think it is for us to tell them how they can do that. But some serious leadership and introspection is needed as well as a serious admission of failure. It remains unthinkable to me that the party would have dealt with any other form of racism in the way it has with antisemitism. The events of the last few years – gruelling as they have been – should be a sharp reminder that the Jewish community has found its voice and we will not stay silent when our community is under attack. The next leader of the Labour Party has a choice and they must take the urgent and necessary steps to begin to build bridges with the Jewish community. Only if the former approach is taken can some of the hurt, pain and anxiety of the past few years begin to be repaired. The time for healing is now. The question is: is that the direction the new leader of the Labour Party will want to go?

But the moment that best summed up the night for Labour, as well as the attitude of those who have assumed control of the party apparatus in recent years, came not long afterwards. Jon Lansman, the head of the far-left Momentum pressure group, appeared on the BBC and attempted to defend the Corbyn project. “It’s all very well saying the policies have been rejected,” he told an incredulous presenter. “But how do you explain the fact that the poll says in Putney there’s an 85 percent chance of a Labour victory? The voters in Putney aren’t horrified by the policies.” As goes Putney, so goes… well, just Putney. The south London seat was the only one in the entire country gained by Labour. While there are a number of faces the Jewish community will not miss on the benches of the

Commons, perhaps foremost among them is Chris Williamson, the now former MP from Derby North. The man who said earlier this year that Labour had been “too apologetic” regarding antisemitism in the party ran as an independent candidate. He came last, failing to receive enough votes to get back his deposit. But there are many others whose presence in the Commons will be greatly missed – both MPs who are Jewish, such as Luciana Berger, Ruth Smeeth and Louise Ellman, and those who are long-standing friends of Britain’s Jews, including Ian Austin, Joan Ryan, John Mann

and Mike Gapes – and far more besides. Now, however, the focus will turn to what the Labour Party does next. Already, certain MPs have begun to position themselves for an upcoming leadership contest – eagle-eyed watchers may have been able to detect leadership themes on Thursday night during some individual constituency victory speeches. Jeremy Corbyn has said he will step down as leader, but has employed characteristic vagueness regarding when. There are two main schools of thought on the issue: one would have him step down now, without any delay, so that the rebuilding process can begin. Others have already suggested that Corbyn remain in place for the time being – at least until the Equality and Human Rights Commission comes back with the results of its investigation into accusations of institutional

antisemitism in the party. That way, there is no doubt as to where the ultimate blame for this situation should be placed. Whenever it comes, this leadership election will be viewed, at least by some, as an opportunity for the Labour Party to make a clean break from the past four-and-ahalf years, entering a new chapter. But while many within our community will doubtless be happy to see the back of Corbyn, we know the issues within the party will not simply cease to exist when he departs. During Corbyn’s time as leader, the Board of Deputies, along with other communal organisations, repeatedly made a series of recommendations as to how the party could begin to rid itself of anti-Jewish racism – most of these were ignored. Corbyn’s successor will not be able to properly deal with Labour’s antisemitism problem unless they take a very different attitude to this ongoing problem.

A dry look at how Labour can finally clean up its act ALEX BRUMMER

he morning after the long night of the election my first port of call was a dry cleaners near my place of work. The proprietor informed me he voted Labour but wasn’t unhappy Boris Johnson won. Why was that, I asked? He confessed he didn’t like Labour’s nationalisation plans and was pleased Brexit could finally be done. Then he followed with this line: “I didn’t believe that stuff about antisemitism. It was a conspiracy.” The implication of his remark was clear: it was the Jews that did it. Johnson’s thumping victory immediately relieved the high tension in the community about the prospect of a Corbyn-led government of the left that would demonise Israel and ostracise Jews. On the night of the election the first call I took after the comforting exit polls came from a friend who had been on tenterhooks. He confessed to having been to the bank earlier in

the week to change pounds into dollars. He feared a collapse in sterling but also thought they would be more useful if he and his family felt the need to leave the UK for their second home in Israel. If the pound climbed on the foreign exchanges (as it did) it was the best money he had ever lost. A second person told me he had been planning to go to Israel for the holiday period. If Corbyn had won it would have been a one way ticket. He was not coming back. Almost everyone I have seen or spoken to in the Jewish community since the result had much the same kind of reaction. They admitted to having a knot in their stomachs before the exit poll and then huge relief. But the dry cleaner’s remark and an after service talk at Western Marble Arch synagogue by my friend Philip Spencer, Emeritus Professor of Holocaust Studies and Genocide at Kingston University, awoke me to a different reality. The Corbynista tendency and the antiZionist, anti-Jewish narrative of the left is far from extinguished from the party and British life. This in spite of the common sense tolerance of northern, industrial class voters.

THE IMPLICATION OF HIS REMARK WAS CLEAR: IT WAS THE JEWS THAT DID IT Corbyn and his supporters in Momentum will not relinquish their de facto control of the party easily. The Labour leader has demonstrated his stubbornness by a refusal to vacate office and a very spare apology in which he disavowed nothing about the campaign. Spencer’s brilliant point is that the left (of which he has been part for most of his academic life) is able to declare itself at the forefront of the fight for anti-racism because it does not see antisemitism as part of that battle. It is possible to be anti-racist and antisemitic at the same time. This is because Jews, in the worldview of the far left, are not people of colour (if they spent time in Israel they easily be disabused) and blend into Western society. Indeed, they disappear so well that they are

the controlling minds, the conspiracy behind media, finance and much else. Corbyn’s vicious attacks on billionaires, bankers and the wealthy is part of a disguised antisemitism. He and his Momentum compatriots’ hatred of Israel is the result of two strands of thought. In one Israel is both the last vestige of Western imperialism and colonialism. Or conversely it is the breeding ground for a conspiracy to control Western governments and agendas. None of this narrative has been expunged from the current Labour party by Johnson’s election victory. Whoever succeeds Corbyn will need to publicly disavow and expel these antisemitic views before Labour can be seen as mainstream again. The struggle to suppress antisemitism in the UK is far from being won.

Labour will only reform if we’re part of the process PETER MASON

he election result for Labour was crushing. As the exit poll was announced, the overriding emotion of Jewish Labour members was one of conflict and anguish. A large part anger at the scale of Labour’s defeat and the leadership that led us there. A significant part disappointment over five more years of austerity, populism and Brexit. For many too, a not insignificant part – relief – that those who failed to tackle anti-Jewish racism through inaction or design, who lied and obfuscated and prevaricated had been routed. But this may be short lived. A respite ahead of a change of leadership that could mark a new beginning in the struggle to combat antisemitism on the left. Just as they did over the scale of evident antisemitism, there are those within the Party who have set about a coordinated campaign of denialism over our epic

failure. The countless doorstep conversations where voters groaned at Corbyn’s weak leadership have been explained away as the consequence of a “media smear”. The queasiness of voters who expressed concern over Labour’s anti-racist credentials has been blamed on those who exposed it and called it out. On Brexit, there are plenty with the temerity to claim our opaque position was the consequence of “embittered remainers” foisting a second referendum on “principled” and “courageous” Corbyn, despite his supporters having firmly gripped every lever of power in the party since the 2016 second leadership election. The conflict for those of us who stayed to fight has been deep. Luciana Berger and Dame Louise Ellman’s departures were moments of great shame, and the defeat of Ruth Smeeth one of deep anger. As courageous female Jewish MPs, each faced abuse and antisemitism on a scale incomparable with some of the worst testimonies of Party members forming the bulk of JLM’s referral of the Party to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.

THE REACTION OF JEWISH LABOUR MEMBERS WAS CONFLICT & ANGUISH We asked our membership twice and each time they responded that we would do everything within our power, from within, to hold the party accountable for the antisemitism coursing through our movement. None of us could have anticipated, when we made the decision to ask the EHRC to investigate in 2018, that a general election would have been called as it entered its concluding phase. Our final submission, the summary of thousands of pages of evidence – leaked in the final week of the campaign – laid bare the scale of the problem. It attested to the worst examples of institutional discrimination, confirmed by sworn testimony from whistle-blowers

from every corner of the Party’s structures. Corbyn’s failure will not bring an end to Labour’s antisemitism crisis – it marks a new beginning in the fight. There is now a small chance, probably the final one, Labour could decisively defeat it by electing a leader who will take the moral leadership he did not. For the very first time, JLM declared a strike, only campaigning for exceptional candidates who had stood out as allies. Just as Labour has only acted against antisemitism when forced to, and only exhibiting begrudging duress, Labour will only elect a leader willing to act if we are part of that conversation. The language of that conversation must be one Labour understands: one of protest and pressure, of solidarity with our allies. It will take Jewish Labour activists rejoining JLM and the party in their hundreds to cast their ballots in the leadership election to make this happen. Some will want to wait until the EHRC has concluded its investigation. But as JLM has shown, we are willing and able to lead this fight and we will continue to do so until it is over.

Marylebone’s Central Synagogue got into the festive spirit at the annual Chanukah wonderland, during which 60 members got stuck into creating chanukiyot using innovative sand techniques, a torch-lit treasure hunt and a glow in the dark disco. Storytelling and bingo sessions provided entertainment for all the family, and participants recharged their batteries with a meal of pizza and doughnuts, accompanied by music and glow sticks, and took home with them enough chocolate coins to last until the start of the Chanukah festival. I saw a lot of fear. He was very depressed and desperate, but I didn’t realised this would put an end to our life together.” Just weeks later, Eli was caught by Syrian officials. At that moment, “something within me instantly died,” says Nadia. “I functioned like a robot. I fed the kids, dressed them, sent them to school, but there was no living spirit within me.” For the last 54 years, Nadia has tirelessly campaigned for Eli’s body to be returned to Israel for proper burial. “I have a lot of sadness,” she tells me. “It hurts me a lot, because I’m starting to think maybe I won’t be able to see his grave in my lifetime.” Last year however, Nadia received a glimmer of hope when Eli’s wristwatch was recovered by Mossad during a secret operation. Today, the watch rests within a framed plaque featuring the insignia of Mossad and a picture of Eli, and has pride of place in her home. “I felt his light again when I received that watch,” she smiles. As her lifelong campaign to return Eli’s body to Israel continues, I ask Nadia what she would like people to remember most about her hero husband. “That he was a Zionist, a true patriot and loved his people,” says Nadia proudly. “That he put himself in harm’s way to secure the future of the Jewish people.”

We Fight Fascists Six months after the end of the Second World War, the leader of Britain’s fascist party, Sir Oswald Mosley (pictured right) was given a rapturous reception by 1,000 stalwart supporters – complete with raised-arm salutes, at a party thrown in his honour. Despite the defeat of the Third Reich that he had so admired, Mosley remained convinced that Britain’s fascist moment was still to come. But the former head of the British Union of Fascists would also face a group of equally committed opponents — mainly Jewish ex-servicemen – who fought, spied upon and, ultimately, helped to defeat Mosley’s much hoped-for return to the political stage. As Daniel Sonabend brilliantly captures in his new book, We Fight Fascists: The 43 Group and Their Forgotten Battle for Post-war Britain, this was a tale of often bloody and occasionally terrifying “organised chaos”. In May 1946, four Jewish former soldiers encountered Jeffrey Hamm, a Nazi enthusiast and virulent antisemite, addressing a small crowd at Whitestone Pond in Hampstead. They rushed the small platform from where he was speaking, tangling with the stewards who were guarding it, and beat Hamm. When the four men recounted their actions back at Maccabi House, a Jewish sports club in West Hampstead, they received a warm response. As Sonabend writes: “Over the next few months these young Jewish ex-servicemen saw the Whitestone Pond attack not as a one-off, but as the template for an anti-fascist organisation.” So it was, that from a determination that never again should Jews be stalked by fascists on the streets of London, the 43 Group was born in the last months of 1946. Over the next two years, the group drenched fascists in the paint that they’d been using to daub antisemitic graffiti and disrupted speeches by starting mass brawls. They even infiltrated the fascist ranks to obtain the date and venue of Mosley’s comeback rally in November 1947, forcing him to retreat from the stage and they left his supporters bruised and bloodied after a May Day march in East London. “If it achieved nothing else,” one veteran later recalled, “it gave Jewish ex-servicemen the sense of pride that we are a people who can defend ourselves and we’re not just running away. If it did nothing else. But I’m sure it did do more than that.” We Fight Fascists by Daniel Sonabend is published by Verso, priced £20. Available now.

NNAMON PLUM CAKE WITH CI E & VANILLA CRUMBL

his tray bake brings back unforgettable childhood memories of the plum harvest in our grandmother’s garden. Baking this classic together was an annual ritual. Our updated version is crammed with plums and is less sweet, while the cinnamon gives it a sophisticated twist.

1. To make the yeast dough, heat the milk in a pan until lukewarm. Add the sugar, yeast, and salt and stir well. Use the dough hook on an electric mixer to combine the flour, yeast mixture, and butter in a bowl for a couple of minutes, until you have a glossy, supple dough. Cover with a tea towel and leave the dough to prove in a warm place for one hour, until doubled in volume.

SERVES: 1 TRAY BAKE

INGREDIENTS YEAST DOUGH 200ml (7fl oz) milk of choice 25g (scant 1oz) dark muscovado sugar 10g (¼oz) dried yeast pinch of salt 375g (13oz) spelt flour, plus extra for dusting 50g (1¾oz) softened butter

2. Meanwhile, for the crumble, rub all the ingredients together in a bowl until you have rough crumbs and leave to chill in the fridge.

FRUIT TOPPING 1.5kg (3lb 3oz) plums 1 tbsp dark muscovado sugar 2 tsp ground cinnamon

4. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/Gas 4). Bake the plum cake in the centre of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes then remove and leave to cool. If you wish, decorate with phlox flowers.

CRUMBLE 100g (3½oz) spelt flour 30g (1oz) dark muscovado sugar 2–3 drops vanilla extract 60g (2oz) chilled butter

Tip. For a vegan version, you can replace the butter with the same quantity of coconut oil and use a plant-based milk. This cake also tastes great with other varieties of plums or chopped apple.

SEDRA Vayeshev BY RABBI JONNY ROODYN Betrayed and abandoned, the 17-year-old Joseph finds himself in an environment that is the polar opposite of the home in which he was brought up. Far away from the atmosphere of intense spirituality and awareness of God that was palpable in Jacob’s home, he is sold into servitude to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s ministers – and also now has to find the moral fortitude to withstand the advances of his master’s wife. In what is perhaps one of the most dramatic episodes in the Torah, Joseph manages to rebuff her advances. The rabbis add even more colour to the episode, pointing out that the cantillation note above the word, va yimaen, “and he refrained”, is the rare Shalsheles sound. This is an overextended note that goes up and down in waves and denotes the tension Joseph was experiencing, almost succumbing, but in the end withdrawing from the situation. From where does a 17-year-old get this super human strength? The Talmud tells us he saw the reflection of an image of his father. This reminded him of home and all the positive associations that came with it. To take things a stage further, his own image is said to have reflected his father’s. Joseph remembered who he was, where he came from and what his legacy is. The messages he received at home were so strong and positive that he saw himself as an extension of it, despite the distance. This awareness was able to carry him through the greatest challenges and is a lesson for us all.

Levites is rehabilitation. It is there that killers get back into touch with their spiritual self. The Levites were teachers of the law and would see to it that rehabilitation was effective. Speaking of Levites, the Torah declares: “The Lord is their inheritance”, a phrase adapted in the modern Siddur to the departed. The Levites provided benchmark instruction, which allowed offenders to return to the community. Thus, rehabilitation is not only part of the Torah’s communal design, but it is intended to ensure as far as possible

that there is significant improvement on the part of an offender before he or she re-enters the community. There is no escape from behavioural reform for convicts in the Torah’s legal and ethical system. Whereas there is “sanctuary” for political refugees, anyone who is sought by the authorities for a capital offence is taken from the altar of God to face justice. For this reason, Joab was unable to flee from David’s deathbed order to his son Solomon to execute justice for his rebellion against him. Therefore, some crimes are not rehabilitated and those that are must follow a programme that ensures personal improvement and a reduction of recidivism. The Bible Says What? Absolutely nothing about Chanukah! BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS The first record of the story of Chanukah is found in the Book of Maccabees, written around 135 BCE – as little as 30 years after the Maccabean revolt. That was too late to make it into the Tanach (the Hebrew Bible), so while Chanukah might feel like the festive highlight of the year to some, it’s actually one of the least important festivals. So where do we find the Book of Maccabees? It was preserved by our Christian friends in what is known at the Apocrypha, or the Intertestamental Books. For some Christians, this selection of texts made it into the official scriptures, for others they are seen as valuable and interesting historical texts. Maccabees preserves for us the story of a great military victory won by a tiny guerrilla army. It teaches us that the first Chanukah was a rededication of the Temple and a celebration of Succot, which they had missed

celebrating because of the fighting. This isn’t in the Bible, but it’s the oldest version of the story we have, and it is preserved in someone else’s Bible. More shocking, perhaps, is that there absolutely no mention of oil. The menorah is lit at the rededication of the Temple, but there’s no mention of only one day’s oil being found and an eight-day process to get more! The story of the oil doesn’t appear until the Talmud, around 500 to 700 CE. This is no bad thing; it’s what happens to keep Judaism alive. Post-Temple, the rabbis found many ways to continually deepen and reignite the meaning of our festivals. And today this is our task too – to ensure that Chanukah, and all our festivals, are opportunities to create a deeper meaning and greater light for people in their encounter with Judaism.

This election divided the Jewish community, as few have done in recent memory. Some will feel happy and relieved, some sad and gloomy about the future, and many will be left with mixed feelings. Now the results are in, we have to live with them. It is time to come together. Whatever our politics, there are values that we as Jews hold in common: compassion and concern for the poor; access to education and healthcare; opposition to prejudice; the need to build harmonious communal relations and a concern for the future of the planet, to name just a few. We recently read about how Jacob’s name is changed to Israel, meaning: ‘You have struggled with God and human beings and prevailed.’ Jews have always fought for what

we have believed. It has never been easy and, at times, we have felt powerless. But we have never despaired. As the French Jewish philosopher Edmond Fleg famously said: “I am a Jew, because where despair cries out, the Jew hopes.” There is so much we need to do together, so let us not despair, but rather come together in working for the fulfilment of the hopes we share. Let us also respect our differences and learn to listen across the divides

so that we help to create a climate of respect and tolerance. As Chanukah approaches, its message this year seems particularly relevant. We start with one candle and, at the end of the festival, we have eight, so we are reminded that it only takes one candle for light to spread and conquer the darkness. Hope can grow from small changes and, like the light, can spread, inspiring others to join in the work. Whatever our political views, let us join together to build the sort of world we would like to see, where the light of hope will spread and those who feel despair may be given the hope of a better future. Twas the night before Chanukah, all through the square The city lay peaceful, the flagstones were bare. The cables and staging were laid out with care, In hopes that we could build a grand event there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of dreidels spun round in their heads. And me in my tichel fried latkes (in truth - I’d drunk a large Palwins and hoped for a schluf). Then out in Westminster arose such a clatter. Nelson looked down to see what was the matter. The lions all turned on their plinths in a flash. And in the fountains fell pigeons with a splash. The moon shone on workers of every persuasion, As they started to set up for this grand occasion. Tables, gazebos and food trucks appearing, Scaffolding, mics and security clearing. Neighbours around open windows and stared. It was busy and noisy but nobody cared. The joy was obvious in all who worked there To bring Chanukah right to Trafalgar Square I jumped on a tube train, my journey was quick. I felt so excited (a teeny bit sick). As we all arrived, cameras filmed for The News A Chanukah party not just for the Jews Now, latkes! Now, doughnuts! Now, speakers, musicians! On Dreidel Man! On singers! Take your positions! To the stage with the candles! Equipment bring near! Let›s winch in the main star, a huge Chanukiah! Then like a tornado, a flood, hurricane, The audience came, never minding the rain. They gathered together, sang strong, said a prayer, Then spoke the Chief Rabbi, and then spoke the Mayor And I got to play my part as the compere To welcome, to host Chanukah in the Square And we›ll soon once again Unite Under the Light And I›ll say Happy Chanukah - to all a good night!
