13 tonnes of hair taken from China’s Uyghur Muslims has ‘Nazi resonance’

A senior member of an influential parliamentary committee on China this week spoke of “distressing echoes” for Jews in China’s “brutal suppression” of its Uyghur minority after 13 tonnes of human hair was found on a US-bound ship, writes Adam Decker. It follows a huge US Customs seizure of human hair products believed to have been taken from Muslim Uyghurs, more than a million of whom have been detained in vast indoctrination camps in China’s western Xinjiang province. US Customs and Border Protection assistant commissioner Brenda Smith said the production of the weaves and other hair products found onboard the ship “constitutes a very serious human rights violation”. The news, together with the implication that hair is being forcibly removed from thousands of prisoners then sold, has horrified UK Jewish groups – including the Board of Deputies, Rene Cassin and the Jewish Council for Racial Equality – with some citing its “chilling and obvious resonances” with the Holocaust. Alistair Carmichael MP, vice-chair (human rights) of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on China, said states around the world “need to hold the Chinese Government to account for their brutal suppression of the Uyghurs”, which is understood to be on an industrial scale, comprising 1,200 camps. “It is never a good idea to compare any

contemporary incident to the Holocaust,” said Carmichael. “My fundamental rule is that nothing can be compared to the Holocaust. I know, however, that this report has many distressing echoes for those who know the history of that most dreadful episode. “Events in Srebrenica and Rwanda in recent decades should teach us that genocide can still happen and that no one is safe unless everyone guards against it.” Carmichael, a Liberal Democrat and senior MP who served as Secretary of State for Scotland under the coalition government, has supported Israeli-Palestinian peacebuilding programmes and in 2018 spent a day with London’s Jewish community to better understand the issue of antisemitism. This is yet another terrible example of the systematic de-humanisation of the Uyghur Muslims by the Chinese state.” She said the Uyghurs’ suppression already includes mass internment, “re-education,” slave labour, forced sterilisation, organ-farming and other abuses. “The Chinese Communist Party is engaged in genocide in Xinjiang, attempting to wipe out an entire culture, language and way of life,” she said. “It is time for the world to take a stand against such inhumanity. There can be no ‘business as usual’ with a government that abuses its own citizens on such a scale.” Dr Edie Friedman, director of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality (JCORE), said the report “naturally rings alarm bells for those concerned with human rights and will arouse particular emotions for Jewish people given the Nazi resonances”. She added: “The international community must call for a fully independent inquiry into this episode.” Board of Deputies’ vice president Edwin Shuker said the news was “further evidence of the systematic persecution of the Uyghur minority in China”, adding: “We ask that the Government uses its position at the UN to raise these matters on the international stage, and with the Chinese government.”  Editorial comment, page 14

The Labour Party this week received the long-awaited draft of the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s report on its investigation into antisemitism in the party, writes Richard Ferrer. The party said it had been sent as “part of a process afforded to us” ahead of the publication of the

commission’s final report, expected in 28 days. “We are committed to co-operating fully with the Commission’s investigation and implementing its recommendations when the final report is published,” a Labour Party statement said. A spokesperson for the Jewish Labour Movement

said: “As a third-party to the investigation, we have not had sight of the draft report. We hope it will provide the kind of impartial and independent scrutiny required to force the party to comply with its duties under the Equality Act.” Gideon Falter, chief executive of Campaign Against

Economic secretary to the Treasury John Glen made the comments in response to a parliamentary question tabled by fellow Conservative John Howell, who asked about the “risks of misuse” of IMF loan packages to the crisis-hit country. Lebanon’s government is desperately seeking financial aid as its economy reels, with the currency having lost 80 percent of its value in recent months, and the IMF is one of few possible lifelines, alongside Chinese investment. Prime minister Hassan Diab’s government is supported by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah and its allies, prompting Howell to ask about lending conditions. “The IMF must establish adequate safeguards for use of its resources,” said Glen. A high court judge has ruled that statements by former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on the Andrew Marr programme in 2018 could be held to be defamatory of pro-Israel activist Richard Millett. The ruling means the case can proceed to a full libel trial, writes Jenni Frazer. The case refers to comments made by Corbyn when he was asked about his previous remarks about “Zionists” who, he believed, “do not understand English irony”. At a preliminary hearing on 23 June, the judge, Mr Justice Saini, was asked to determine whether the meaning of Corbyn’s remarks on the show justified a libel action. Marr had asked Corbyn about a 2013 speech he had made at a meeting convened by the Palestinian Return Centre. There he had commented on an event in parliament days earlier, where the guest speaker was the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Manuel Hassassian.

At the Palestinian Return Centre event, Corbyn complained that some present at the meeting in parliament were “thankfully silent Zionists” who had behaved in a “very, very abusive manner” towards Hassassian. He added that not only did they “not understand history”, but that “they did not understand English irony either”, despite having lived in Britain for a long time. In his nine-part judgment, delivered on Friday, the judge said: “I find that the words complained of referred to Mr Millett; that they bore a meaning defamatory of Mr Millett as identified above; and I find that the allegations were factual”. He said it was reasonable to conclude that Corbyn’s comments referred to Millett, even though he was not identified by name. But he refused permission to Millett to amend his claim against Corbyn, by submitting an additional five articles in which the “English irony” speech was discussed.

Johnson and Abbas hold talks Boris Johnson has spoken with the president of the Palestinian Authority to repeat his concerns about Israel’s proposal to annex parts of the West Bank. Downing Street confirmed that Johnson told Mahmoud Abbas during a phone call on Tuesday of the UK’s “opposition” to the move and offered his support to “foster dialogue” in the Middle East. Johnson raised similar concerns with Israeli prime

minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a call last week, cautioning that any attempt to annex territory would set back the prospects for peace. Netanyahu had said he planned to move forward with annexation plans by 1 July in line with US president Donald Trump’s much criticised Middle East plan. However, the plan appears to be on hold as Israel awaits a green light from Washington and deals with a fresh coronavirus out-

break. A Downing Street spokesman said in the conversation between the two leaders, Johnson had “reiterated the UK’s commitment to the two-state solution and our opposition to annexation proposals in the West Bank. “The prime minister urged President Abbas to engage in negotiations and offered the UK’s support to foster dialogue. The leaders agreed to continue to work together.

Shuls ‘forever changed’ A leading United Synagogue rabbi predicts synagogues “will change forever” as a result of lockdown, writes James Martin. Reflecting on feedback from his community, Rabbi Daniel Roselaar, from Alei Tzion synagogue in Hendon, said: “Many congregants feel there are better ways of engaging rather than sitting in a room together. We clearly weren’t doing enough virtually before. Zoom services for Kabbalat Shabbat are much more popular than pre-lockdown synagogue versions.” Speaking in a Zoom chat hosted by Rabbi Joseph Dweck, Senior Rabbi of the S&P Sephardi Community, Rabbi Roselaar added: “Some people just won’t come back to shul services. They have got out of the habit or learned to appreciate the silence of prayer in a solitary setting. That is worrying for community rabbis. It’s also not the normative model of Jewish prayer. I also think the days of long

synagogue services for Ashkenazi communities are over. Lots of people have said they miss coming to shul, but there is something to be said for praying at home for one hour versus being in shul for two-and-a-half hours.” One of his lockdown-era innovations – emailing his sermon out before Shabbat – remains. It’s not the worst thing in the world if the people that want to hear me do – and those that don’t, opt out of watching the footage.” Many synagogues currently require prebooking to avoid overcrowding and track and trace measures. Diaspora stats revealed 504 COMMUNAL DEATHS Israeli study offers hope The Jewish Agency has outlined how Jewish communities around the world have lost members to the coronavirus, after last week collating information from countries’ Jewish representatives and leaders. Brazilian leaders said 100 community members

had died, and neighbouring Argentina said 70 had died. In Chile, 40 Jews have died from Covid-19, in Mexico 50 have died and 33 Jews have died across the Middle East, excluding Israel. The United States and former Soviet states were excluded from the stats.

The number of coronavirusrelated deaths among UK Jews reached 504 as of last Friday, up from 502 the previous week, according to figures collated by the Board of Deputies. The death toll, released on Tuesday, covers deaths both in hospital and beyond,

using data from burial boards, regional Jewish communities and the Jewish Small Communities Network. A spokesperson for the Board of Deputies said: “We wish their families a long life, and pray that the memory of their loved ones should be for a blessing.”

Israeli scientists have shown that the coronavirus causes fat to accumulate in the lungs and suggested that cholesterol-lowering drugs may help to fight the virus’s effects. The findings of a joint team from Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) and New York’s Mount Sinai Med-

ical Centre raise the prospect that a readily available drug might help. HU’s Prof Yaakov Nahmias said this week that early research looked promising. “By understanding how the virus controls our metabolism, we can wrestle back control from it,” he said.

WIMBLEDON SHUL NAMES NEW RABBI The Wimbledon Synagogue has appointed Rabbi Adrian Michael Schell as its new religious leader. He will join the Reform congregation from 1 November. Born in 1973 and raised in Frankfurt, he is a former bookseller who joined the rabbinate in 2013. ‘Infect Jews’ report is aired A government report on extremism during the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted far-right activists’ calls to “infect Jews” as well as five different ways antisemites have blamed Jews for spreading the virus. Researchers show how certain conspiracies have gained traction online, including the idea that the virus is fake and part of a Jewish plot to mislead the public, or that it is real and was deliberately created by Jews for malevolent purposes. Other conspiracies identified by the Commission for Countering Extremism (CCE),

which published its report last Thursday, include Jews being the “primary spreaders”. Various organisations, including Tony Blair’s thinktank, have highlighted how farright activists have incited others “to deliberately spread the virus to Jews”, with antisemitic narratives gaining traction within the UK and the US. The report’s authors looked at the way extremists have sought to exploit the current pandemic, and said individuals such as David Icke played “a significant role in spreading antisemitic theories linked to Covid-19”.

SURVEY OF VIRUS’ IMPACT British Jews are being asked to help researchers looking at the impact of Covid-19 at individual, family and communal levels, writes Adam Decker. A survey was launched this week by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR) to gather data about the impact of the coronavirus, gathering the experiences of

Jews living in the UK. Those over 16 are being asked to sign up to take part in the survey, which will help policymakers and charities to allocate increasingly stretched resources. Respondents are asked whether they felt “nervous, anxious or on edge” during lockdown, or have felt frus-

trated, depressed, isolated, lonely or bored. “The research will gather insights into how the pandemic has affected Jews in terms of their health, employment, social relationships and Jewish lives,” said JPR. To take part in the survey call JPR on 0800 044 5077

authority; share your wishes with your family and state your decision on the Organ Donation Register website. Our loved ones should know what our wishes are so confusion on this crucial matter does not add to the distress.”

When activities co-ordinator Robert Speker decided to recreate album covers with the residents at Sydmar Lodge in Mill Hill, he had no idea his photographs would go viral in hours and create a media frenzy, writes Brigit Grant. Speker, 41, who has worked at the care home for five years, was at work on Sunday when TV and radio stations started calling to ask him about the project, which features the home’s Jewish residents replicating the cover poses of artists such as Madonna, Adele, Bruce Springsteen and Rag’n’Bone Man. The former Kisharon worker was featured in Jewish News last year when he took resident Sheila Solomons to see Rag’n’Bone Man. Sheila appears in the album collection as the musician, complete with tattoos painted on by Speker, and as bassist Paul Simonon in The Clash’s album London Calling. Born and raised in Newcastle, Speker, who has been working

UK Jews say annexation will cause ‘schism’ More than 870 UK Jews have backed an open letter warning that Israel’s unilateral plan to annex parts of the West Bank would cause a “fundamental schism” between Israel and AngloJewry, writes Mathilde Frot. “We are deeply alarmed that the plans of this current Israeli government to undertake unilateral annexation of territory held by Israel since 1967 will result in a fundamental schism between Israel and our community,” reads the letter, organised by the advocacy group Yachad. Signatories – described as “a cross-section of British Jews” – include 16 rabbis,

dozens of academics, the Labour peer Lord Beecham and Jewish Labour Movement national chair Mike Katz, who put his name to the letter in a personal capacity. The letter is expected to be delivered shortly to Israel’s diaspora affairs minister Omer Yankelevich. The final resting place of Fleet Street’s first female editor Rachel Beer has been restored and marked with a plaque. The effort was funded by the newspapers which Beer edited until 1901, The Observer and Sunday Times. The Times columnist Ann Treneman first discovered Beer’s grave at Tunbridge Wells municipal cemetery while researching a book in 2013 and has since led efforts to honour her achievements. A popular online fashion brand has apologised for selling a “metal swastika pendant necklace” on its website, writes Sandy Rashty. The apology from Shein came after customers complained about the sale of a gold-coloured chain with a large swastika pendant. The retailer – which has promised to review its product selection process – was selling the necklace on its website for around £2.50. The government this week reiterated its commitment to build a new £100 million Holocaust memorial beside the Houses of Parliament despite a legal challenge and pending recession, writes Adam Decker. Before the Bosnian War, Bosnians lived side-by-side with one another, but that soon changed once nationalists told Bosnian Serbs that they were in danger. Safet’s primary school teacher was among those to sign up, later running a large concentration camp. “The propaganda was designed to frighten Serbs,” he recalls. “They said Muslim doctors were injecting Serbian women with something so they couldn’t have children, and that all Muslim families had lists of which Serbs to kill.” “The neighbours, I believe, wouldn’t have done it, but once you create that environment…” Some took a stand, he said, but not enough. “There weren’t many. Some did it willingly, some reluctantly. One Serbian soldier saved my father from getting badly beaten, maybe even killed, but my neighbours all watched from their windows as my dad and brother got taken away. They didn’t get involved or try to stop it. A friend of mine was taken to a camp and found his teacher was one of the guards. “People say to me, ‘I want to understand it.’ I say, ‘good luck, because I still don’t.’ Is there a reason to hate all Jewish people? Is there a reason to hate all Muslims? “People can be scared into doing things they’d never normally do. In Bosnia, they used

Turkey is way over there!” Safet and his family survived, helped to leave by the Red Cross, and took refuge in the UK in 1993. Their Bosnian home was taken by a Bosnian Serb family, but after a decade of legal wrangling they managed to prove it was theirs. Today, talking to schoolchildren “whose minds are not yet made up”, he tells how his friends suddenly “turned away” from him. “Maybe they were scared, maybe they didn’t see what was going on,” he says. “I try to look for excuses. The point is, we need to learn about it, call it what it was – genocide – and know what to look out for again.”

ANISH KAPOOR PLEA TO END ‘TOKENISM’ The sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor has urged museums and art galleries to end a culture of “tokenism” where art is displayed because of the artist’s origins or identity. The Mumbai-born winner of the 2017 Genesis Prize, nicknamed ‘the Jewish Nobel,’ made the comments as he unveiled his latest work at Houghton Hall. “Museums need to stop tokenism,” he said. “Collect an Iranian artist here, a South African artist there. They need to really begin to try to properly take on what is contemporary culture today.”

AMNESTY LOSES ISRAEL COURT FIGHT Amnesty International has lost a legal attempt to force Israel’s Ministry of Defence to revoke the security export licence to NSO Group, whose surveillance software is alleged to target journalists and rights activists. On Monday the district court judge in Tel Aviv rejected Amnesty’s effort to block the sale of NSO spyware, saying the charity had not substantiated its claim that human rights activists were monitored. Amnesty described the verdict as “shameful”.

Jewish group at centre of student rape claims An all-male Jewish fraternity is at the centre of multiple sexual assault, harassment and rape allegations made by students at St Andrews University, writes Francine Wolfisz. Claims have been made against members of Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi), an American-style group that is not officially part of the university and has branches across the world. Since allegations arose via the Instagram account St Andrews Survivors, AEPi has suspended a small proportion of its 50 members and pledged to investigate the claims, review current leadership and include “mandatory consent education and anti-rape culture education” for members. A statement on AEPi’s Facebook page said: “We find the contents of these allegations abhorrent and are taking them extremely seriously. Coming forward in any capacity takes tremendous bravery and we want to thank everyone who has both told their stories and those who have supported them as we confront these difficult issues.” On St Andrews Survivors, which

is not affiliated with the university, one anonymous post said: “I was out drinking and had met a frat boy through friends. A Spanish diplomat who saved hundreds of Jews from the Nazis in Hungary during the Holocaust has been given an online tribute 40 years after his death. Angel Sanz Briz, who died in 1980 aged 69, was a diplomat in Budapest in 1944 and let up to 5,000 Jews of Spanish origin get Spanish passports, when he only had permission for 200. Israel’s Yad Vashem recognised him as Righteous Among the Nations in 1966.

Protests in Israel turned violent on Tuesday night as thousands took to the streets angered by Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Demonstrators broke through barricades, blocked rail services and clashed with police as dozens of officers were injured by flying objects and a TV crew was attacked.

More than 50 arrests were made as police desperately tried to disperse crowds in Jerusalem, where up to 2,000 protesters gathered outside Netanyahu’s official residence on Balfour Street. President Reuven Rivlin tweeted that “we cannot in good conscience tolerate such images, this is not our way,” as anger was directed towards Israel’s strictly-

Orthodox population, which is seen as having ignored advice to stop the virus’s spread. Opposition leader Yair Lapid said protests were fine but violence was not. “The Balfour Street protest is justified and correct, but nothing can justify violence against police and journalists,” he said. “We have no other country, no other police.”

A new memoir has thrown a light on the painful saga of Iran’s Mashhadi Jews who were forced to practice Judaism in secret. Mashhad is Iran’s second city and dominated by fanatical mullahs, so for centuries Jews there dressed and acted as Muslims in public. Esther Amini, whose parents were Mashhadi, penned her book ‘Concealed’ based on her

family’s life before they escaped to the US via Afghanistan.

The Italian government has agreed to prevent the destruction of an old Jewish cemetery after an intervention by the Chief Rabbi of Israel, David Lau. The cemetery in Mantova was part of a regional construction project and was due to be bulldozed until Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte stepped in, ordering that construction plans be changed to prevent damage to the ancient cemetery. Lau wrote of his ‘great appreciation’.

This moment hits our rawest nerve

An issue often needs ‘a moment’ to really grab our attention. Think of three-year old Alan Kurdi’s body washed up on a Turkish beach, or the knee on the neck of George Floyd. It’s not that we didn’t know about the refugee wave, or racism in the US police, it’s just that slow-burn human tragedy – whether from war or wrongdoing – often needs ‘a moment’ to make us sit up and think. News of – and reaction to – the interception of an illicit shipment of human hair from China may be that moment for the persecuted Uyghur minority, at least as far as the Jewish community is concerned. US Customs officers found 13 tons of human hair in the form of products and weaves aboard a US-bound Chinese ship last week. The parallels with 20th century Jewish history are horrific. But this is not the first parallel, as Jewish leaders in the UK have increasingly learned. What started as a Chinese government crackdown on suspected Islamic terrorists in the Xinjiang province has turned into this century’s most abhorrent example of collective punishment, details of which have slowly emerged in the last two or three years. First, satellite imagery revealed 1,200 huge new camps springing up out of nowhere – enough to house 1.8 million Uyghurs, say activists. The largest of them houses 140,000. Their existence was first denied by officials, until that became untenable. It is for their own good, Beijing then said. It is forced detention, forced labour, slavery, indoctrination and repression through mass surveillance and persecution, replied activists. Huge camps? Forced labour? Hair shorn then sold? That this touches such a raw nerve should surprise nobody. Yes, this is China we’re talking about, but be that as it may, we are certainly not powerless in this fight. We can lobby our MPs to press the government to hold China to account, or support international organisations working to shine a light on a region and practice that Chinese authorities would no doubt prefer to keep hidden in darkness. Why would we do this, when the world is so convulsed by coronavirus and racial divisions and all manner of other things to worry about? Because we know where this kind of thing leads.

Rivlin’s own goal PROBLEM OF on Liverpool win ANONYMITY As a Manchester United fan – from Manchester no less! – can I say how deeply disappointed I was at Israeli President Reuven Rivlin’s nakedly pro-Liverpool stance when he tweeted mazeltov to the team from Merseyside after they were confirmed as having won the Premier League. I have generally been in favour of this Israeli president’s occasional foray into the morass that is Israeli politics, despite his role supposedly being ceremonial only, but this tweet was a step too far. Netanyahu, who I imagine is a United fan, must rein in the head of state.

The claims of rape and sexual assault made by students at St Andrews University are of course hugely concerning. The first instinct is to believe the accounts these young women have put forward. It can be difficult for young people, with immature judgment, to know when to speak out, and what is and isn’t part of the rough and tumble of student life. However, when accusations of this sort are made anonymously, on social media, they have less weight than if they are made directly to police or to the university authorities. I urge all these victims to have the courage to complain in person.

Signing this new ‘Jewish faith’ statement on the NHS Blood and Transplant website could cause families unnecessary problems just when they are having to deal with – and process – the death of a loved one. That is because it brings rabbis into the decisionmaking process, but different rabbis have a different take on it. Leave them out of the equation: the decision should be down to the

individual donor, and them alone. It would be terrible if their wish to donate were denied by a rabbi who they may not have really known, or by some relative or other who comes out of the woodwork with a different idea of ‘when death occurs’. It would be simpler for all concerned if those who want to donate simply sign the register and tell loved ones.

Shoah survivors warned the world about Bosnia HAMZA KARČIĆ ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR UNIVERSITY OF SARAJEVO

s he delivered his remarks at the Holocaust Memorial Museum dedication in Washington, DC on 22 April 1993, Elie Wiesel turned to Bill Clinton: “Mr President, I cannot not tell you something. I have been in the former Yugoslavia last fall. I cannot sleep since… We must do something to stop the bloodshed in that country.” The significance of the moment and Wiesel’s appeal cannot be overstated. A Holocaust survivor at the opening of a Holocaust museum in America’s capital appealed to the leader of the sole remaining superpower to stop a slaughter thousands of miles away. Wiesel visited the Manjaca camp in northwest Bosnia in 1992 and witnessed the inhumane treatment of Muslims and Croats at the hands of Bosnian Serbs. His visit to the besieged Bosnian capital led him to observe

that Sarajevo had become one of the “most devastated cities in the world”. Weisel’s effort mirrored that of other Holocaust survivors who supported Bosnia in the early 1990s. On Capitol Hill, Representative Tom Lantos was very perceptive as to what was happening in Bosnia. As early as April 1992, Lantos urged fellow congressmen to support his legislation to impose sanctions on Serbia until that country ceased military operations in Yugoslav successor states. The Budapest-born Lantos was the only Holocaust survivor elected to US Congress and his support for Bosnia carried special heft. Over the course of the war, the California Democrat co-sponsored legislation supportive of Bosnia, including efforts to lift the UN-imposed arms embargo. While Wiesel traveled to the Balkans and Lantos provided support on Capitol Hill, Henry Siegman penned powerful op-eds supportive of Bosnian Muslims. The then-executive director of the American Jewish Congress deplored “the cynical and total abandonment of Bosnia’s Muslims by the west to certain slaughter or

expulsion” in July 1993 in the International Herald Tribune. The Geneva peace talks in 1993 were “…a ruse….to extinguish Bosnia as a state”. In January 1994, Siegman called for airstrikes on Serb positions and a lifting of the arms embargo on Bosnia. He harshly criticised the “moral equivalence” that Western governments used to “justify inaction”. A few months later, in May 1994, Siegman was scathing towards the Clinton Administration for “the bankruptcy of … Bosnian policy”. He urged the US and its allies to “undertake a massive supplying of arms to Bosnia’s Muslims”.

Across the Atlantic, Simon Wiesenthal’s voice was heard. Israeli historian Tom Segev in Simon Wiesenthal: The Life and Legends writes that following the dissolution of Yugoslavia “Wiesenthal stood up for the Muslims of Bosnia”. In July 1993, Wiesenthal appealed to President Clinton to airdrop humanitarian aid to Sarajevo. Days after the fall of Srebrenica, Wiesenthal wrote to Clinton urging the US to prosecute Bosnian Serb war leaders. In this letter, the famed Nazi hunter wrote that Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic were the culprits. As we mark the 25th anniversary of Srebrenica, it is important to remember the voices of conscience during the genocide at the close of the 20th century in Europe. Elie Wiesel, Tom Lantos, Henry Siegman and Simon Wiesenthal were clear-eyed as to what was unfolding. When European mediators pursued latterday appeasement and UN peacekeepers vacillated between being bystanders and accomplices, Holocaust survivors spoke up for and supported Bosnia.

he Israeli rabbinate is threatening to go on strike if they have to train women how to sit scholastic exams. I always thought the word ‘rabbi’ meant teacher, but there you go. Frankly, Jewish women need men to train them like a hole in the head. There have been great Jewish women as far back as the Bible. The Old Testament has women prophets – Miriam and Huldah – and the Judge, Deborah, who led the army that beat the Canaanites. We also shouldn’t forget Esther, who brought down Haman, as we record every Purim. It was the very famous first century Rabbi Eleazar ben Arach who set the standard. They wanted to appoint him head of the Sanhedrin, and he said he couldn’t accept until he had consulted his wife. Rabbi Akiba was equally eminent and he said he owed everything to his wife, Rachel. The former Chief Rabbi, Hermann Adler, quoting Akiba, said the same thing about his wife, Rachel. The list of famous Jews who have not consulted their wives is not very long. Women should obviously be treated as

equals, but the pages of history are full of Jewish women who have achieved their goals in male dominated societies anyway. Female Jewish doctors are to be found in some numbers as early as the Middle Ages. There were the 13th century Sarre la Migresse and the oculist Marat Yuskah, the 14th century Fave of Manusque, Na Bellaire and Na Pla and the 15th century Rare of Wurzburg. There were plenty more. There were Jewish women politicians as well; Dona Garcia Nasi was the earliest of Zionists. She bought Tiberias from the Turks in the 16th century. They were short of money and she wanted a national home for persecuted Jews. Later, we were lucky to have Golda Meir as well. Jewish women who have won Nobel prizes include Gerty Cori, Rosalyn Yalow, Gertrude Elion, Rita Levi-Montalcini, Nadine Gordimer and Ada Yonath. If, for example, and I know it’s been worrying you, you want to know more about the ribosome, you need Ada. The Italian Rita Levi-Montalcini once said: “If I had not been discriminated against, or had not suffered persecution, I would never have received the Nobel Prize.” In the law in Britain, the first woman KC was Rose Heilbron, who also became an Old Bailey judge. The first Jewish women barristers

were Rita Reuben and Maria Alice Phillips. Rosalyn Higgins was President of the International Court of Justice and Hazel Cosgrove is a Scottish Judge. How about women succeeding in business? You’ve got Estee Lauder, Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, Mindy Grossman, the CEO of WW (formerly Weight Watchers), Safra Catz, the CEO of Oracle and Ruth Porat, the former CFO of Morgan Stanley and now the CFO of Google. Notice how they see the possibilities of new technology. Rachel Sassoon Beer was the editor of The Sunday Times and The Observer as early as the end of the 19th century. When it comes to fashion in Britain, you have Stella McCartney, Nicole Farhi and Janet Reger. The first Jewish bank manager in Britain was Ethel Rebecca Benjamin. It isn’t entirely surprising that there have been no British Jewish women philosophers. Women are about being practical,

which is why Anna Freud was a famous child psychologist and Marie Jahoda was an acclaimed social psychologist. Jewish women are very well represented in the world of British entertainment. Actresses include Zoe Wanamaker, Miriam Margolyes, Claire Bloom and Helena Bonham Carter. Jewish women singers internationally include Barbra Streisand, Eydie Gormé, Bette Midler and Scarlett Johansson. If, however, you really want to recognise the importance of women in Judaism, you only have to note that a Jew is the child of a Jewish mother, not a father. That makes them really important. She also holds the family together as we all know. No, the contribution of the rabbis in Israel would be useful, but Jewish women can stand on their own two feet. Mind you, my wife doesn’t believe in equality for women. She says she’s been superior for so long, she certainly isn’t going to settle for equality.

abour has finally received a draft of the widely anticipated Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) report on antisemitism in the party under Jeremy Corbyn. It has 28 days to respond before it's made public. Since Corbyn finally relinquished his death grip on the party after two major electoral defeats, much of what Unite union general secretary Len McCluskey is pleased to call “mood music” has altered in Labour. The tune is definitely changing, even if some of the lyrics remain defiantly the same. Personnel – numbers of whom were thought to preside over the alleged institutional antisemitism – have been departing at a rate of knots. They include general secretary Jennie Formby; Labour’s director of governance and head of compliance, Thomas Gardiner, said to have presided over – and dismissed – many of the complaints of antisemitism; Seamus Milne, Corbyn’s most senior aide, widely said to have been the man pulling

in the strings in the Opposition leader’s office; and that’s besides people such as Rebecca Long-Bailey, sacked after refusing to delete a social media post that linked Israel with racist behaviour taught to American police. To put it mildly, things are not looking rosy for Corbyn and his circle. And all of this could have been avoided if someone had taken the trouble to explain to party members what conflating criticism of Israel, and casual antisemitic tropes, really meant. Labour, dragged kicking and screaming into adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, was told over and over again that legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies was acceptable; blaming Jewish people outside Israel for such policies was antisemitic. So we come to this week’s extraordinary

story, for a change not in Britain, but in the sunny uplands of well-behaved Canada. It concerns a Toronto health food restaurant, Foodbenders, whose owner, Kimberly Hawkins, wanted to publicise the fact that her establishment was reopening after lockdown. On social media posts, she wrote: “Open now until 8pm for non-racist shoppers” – and used the hashtag “#zionistsnotwelcome”. Inevitably there was uproar, but Hawkins dug her heels in. You will be unsurprised to learn that she “loves Jewish people and they are welcome in my store”, but that she does not believe “criticism of the Zionist political ideology, Israel or the Greater Israel Project, or pointing out its racist supremacist foundations amounts to criticism of the Jewish people or even Israeli citizens”. Tough luck, Hawkins. Because at least three delivery businesses in Toronto – including

Canadian Uber – have now refused to deal with Foodbenders and the mayor of Toronto has said unequivocally that he thinks her stance is indeed antisemitic. Here’s the thing: Zionists are not welcome in Hawkins’ store, but how could she tell? It seems to me to be unlikely in the extreme that any casual shopper or diner in a health food restaurant would be ready to share their political credentials or beliefs. Nobody shopping for muesli drapes themselves in an Israeli flag to do so, at least nobody sane. So indeed the policy appears to have had the effect of ensuring Jews do not patronise Hawkins’ store – and I daresay local Toronto Jews were well aware of her ideologies since a “Free Palestine” flag has long decorated her shop window. It shouldn’t take a pandemic or a report into institutionalised antisemitism to bring people to their senses. Just before someone gets ready, yet again, to pillory local Jews for the policies of the current Israeli government, I urge them …. is what you have to say really necessary? Or should you just shut up and get back to selling oatmeal and vitamins?

northodox, the four-part Netflix series depicting a Chasidic girl leaving her marriage, captivated viewers across the world and generated fierce debate. I won’t comment on its accuracy, or whether the Berlin scenes added or detracted from the portrayal. Others have done that. What I will say again and again is the scenes of marital rape are real and reflect the experiences of thousands of couples in our community. Rape, including marital rape, is expressly forbidden in Jewish law. Rape is a strong word. When I use it, I am referring to a sex act perpetrated on someone who either hasn’t, or can’t, consented to it. To be clear, I am not arguing that every couple in an arranged marriage has experienced what I am describing. Neither am I suggesting criminal intent or liability. I am describing a social phenomenon that harms Charedi men and women, that needs to be acknowledged before it can be eradicated.

These are uncomfortable facts to acknowledge. Those who can’t sit with their discomfort may experience a certain cognitive dissonance, but that changes nothing for a woman who finds herself lying beneath a man she doesn’t know and to whom she cannot say no. On the wedding night, very few Charedi brides can actually say no. This is because young brides and grooms are often told that a marriage must be consummated on the wedding night. The reasoning is that marital sex is a mitzvah, and a mitzvah shouldn’t be delayed. That obligation to have sex, with a time limit, is itself enough to remove capacity for consent. It is often compounded by other factors. For example, the couple are unlikely even to have touched before the wedding. On their wedding day, the couple will move from first physical contact to penetrative sex in one go. The young couple may not have even spoken to each other since their first meeting, which might have taken place up to a year before the wedding. Consummation must take place before dawn, and the wedding will finish very late at night. Many kallah teachers will tell their female

They will also be told that if they do so, and their husband ‘spills his seed’ or ‘goes elsewhere’, they will have to answer for his sin. For girls brought up on obedience and fear of heaven, this injunction means true consent can barely be distinguished from no consent. Although it is far from guaranteed, the couple may be attracted to each other. They may go on to overcome early difficulties, and enjoy exploring their sexuality together. They may fall in love with each other. That doesn’t change the fact that many will have experienced their wedding night as trauma. They may disassociate from it, or they may talk about it and process it, but it won't be

forgotten. There is also significant risk of the cumulative trauma. The duty to have penetrative sex, subject to the dawn time limit and the resultant urgency to complete the mitzvah without delay, will repeat itself every mikveh night. Charedi psychotherapist Elisheva Liss talks about this in her blog post: ‘I used to rape my wife’. Liss explains how a lack of sexual education for men and women leads to unwitting assault and subsequent trauma within marriages. She is describing a phenomenon she has noticed with many of her Charedi clients, but the issues she explores are universal. In many cultures, for many reasons, young people are pressured into saying yes to sex they don’t want, or don’t feel they can say no to. Young men often feel obliged to lead; women feel obliged to comply. There is no shame in admitting we have these problems too, irrespective of the scale. The shame is in denying that there is a problem. The shame is the constant defensive reactions to the suggestion that we need change, growth and healing.

‘What kind of woman opposes women’s rights?’

s she began to delve into the fascinating world of female politics in the 1970s, TV writer Dahvi Waller assumed like many others that “all women wanted equality, all women wanted to stand together and fight oppression”. There was, in her mind, the power of sisterhood. “But Phyllis Schlafly really flew in the face of that,” smiles Waller, recalling the moment she realised there was a tantalising political drama centred around the women who opposed equal rights waiting to be written. The resulting script evolved into Mrs. America, a nine-episode series now airing on BBC2, which explores the rollercoaster journey of second wave feminists attempting to change the American constitution through the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), an outlawing of discrimination against women. Right at the forefront were a number of prominent Jewish feminists, including lawyer and politician Bella Abzug (Margo Martindale) and writer Betty Friedan (Tracey Ullman), as well as journalist Gloria Steinem (played by Rose Byrne), whose father was Jewish, and Shirley Chisholm (Uzo Aduba), the first black woman elected to the Congress. But despite their efforts, the ERA was never ratified and feminists are still waiting for that moment nearly 50 years on – largely in part to the opposition they faced from the most unlikely of places: other women. At the helm was Schlafly (played superbly by Cate Blanchett), a deeply conservative activist who was anti-abortion, anti-feminist and hell bent on preserving the role of housewives across America. Creator and showrunner Waller, who alongside Blanchett also served as executive producer on the series, says: “There is something intriguing about women opposing equal rights. What woman would do that? But you have to understand, Phyllis and her army of homemakers were actually a very powerful cover for the patriarchy and the misogynists who never wanted to ratify the ERA. “In reality, they weren’t opposing equal rights, they were opposing change. These are very conservative women who grew up at a time when being a homemaker, a wife and a mother was the most idealised version of womanhood. But by the 1970s, they feared

their status would disappear. They had a tremendous amount of anxiety and Phyllis tapped into that.” Before embarking on her latest project, Waller, who served as a writer and producer on the criticallyacclaimed series Mad Men, threw herself into researching around the subject to find out as much as possible about the key players and what made them tick. “I have to be honest, I knew almost nothing about the ERA – in fact, I had to look up on Google to find out what it was,” admits the Canadian-born writer with a laugh. BOOK The Big Thing A new children’s book that explains the Covid-19 crisis through the eyes of a five-year-old girl is helping youngsters navigate their way through a changed world by thinking about the positive things in life. Author Alex Friedman teamed up with Angela Meng to create The Big Thing, which has been charmingly illustrated by Alvaro Gonzales and translated into 10 languages, including English and Hebrew. The story revolves around adventurous youngster Bea, who learns about the virus, where it came from and how it spread. Torah For Today

SEDRA Matot-Masei BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS Last week, Moses was presented with a problem. The land promised to us was about to be conquered, and every tribe and family was about to be given an inheritance. Yet there were people left out of this division, and so without a means of livelihood. This was brought to his attention by the five daughters of Zelophehad, whose father was dead and who had no close male relatives. Their objection was one that, in the days of women’s equality, we can easily understand. If the men inherit and their portion is given to their male children, what about those who have no sons? It is not fair to disinherit daughters in this way. Moses listened carefully and asks God for a solution. Since the land was given to the men in a tribe, the women could marry within the tribe (keeping the land linked to their family). If a person had no children, there was a simple rule as to where the land then went, male relatives in line of precedence from uncles. The law is not dissimilar to that of Levirite

marriage and, as we see in the Book of Ruth, marriage and land or wealth transactions are linked. This rule was both sensible and humane, yet it should be noted that it is not given as a permanent solution. This is just as well, as a religious Jew would have problems if the law were to be applied even today. Instead, the law was temporary. It was annulled, and women who inherited were allowed to marry other tribes. An interesting note is that according to some opinions, 15 Av is the date on which this law was relaxed. This later became the day on which matches were made and today remains a minor feast day of romantic connotation and celebration, known as Tu B’Av. As we enter the second of the Three Weeks, we look forward to the happier times symbolised by this day.

What does the Torah say about: Cancel culture BY RABBI DANIEL FRIEDMAN From JK Rowling (pictured) to Jodie Comer, celebrities are being “cancelled” right, left and centre. It doesn’t take much. It could be a Twitter opinion, or their partner’s political affiliation. Who will be next? Last week, more than 150 thought leaders penned a letter decrying how individuals have been boycotted in this way. What does the Torah say about cancel culture? The obvious starting point is cherem – excommunication. In our tradition, if you refuse to toe the line, you get cancelled from the community. For example, a recalcitrant husband who refuses to give a get to his divorced wife may be excommunicated by the Beth Din. Practically speaking, he would not receive a call-up in synagogue, and it would be forbidden to daven in a minyan with him, among other penalties. So it seems we do believe in cancel culture. Nevertheless, Rabbi Elazar

teaches (Pirkei Avot 2): “Know how to answer a heretic”, which implies a duty to discuss fundamental disagreements, even with characters you might deem unsavoury – because it’s impossible to respond to a person without listening to what they have to say. We don’t cancel people because they entertain different opinions. Judaism thrives on healthy debate. We are not vexed by the recalcitrant husband’s opinions.

We excommunicate him because he’s made his ex-wife’s life a misery by his tangible misconduct. The purpose of the excommunication is to motivate him to mend his ways. Once he’s done so, we welcome him back. Judaism doesn’t believe in eternal cancellation. It’s easy to cancel people from your life because they have different ideas or they’ve said something that annoyed you. The mensch will pick up the phone to the person with whom they’ve disagreed. We’ve all said things out of line and we all have different viewpoints. The Talmud teaches (Shabbat 127b) that God judges us in the same manner we judge others. The Bible Says What? ‘God didn’t actually call Jews the Chosen People’ BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY “And God has distinguished you today to be for God a treasured people, as God spoke to you, and to observe all God’s commandments, and to make you supreme over all the nations that God made, for praise, for renown, and for splendour, so that you will be a holy people to the Eternal your God.” ‘How odd of God to choose the Jews,’ wrote William Norman Ewer, in probably a slightly antisemitic turn of rhyme. But he had a point. Throughout history, including in the Torah itself, we have not been the most popular or most fortunate of people. Today, we are in many ways ambivalent about this ‘chosenness’, at times we are even downright uncomfortable. It is understandable. Yet, the often-repeated claim that the Jews are the chosen people does not actually exist in the Torah or in any classical Jewish literature.

The closest we get to it is in the verse above, which says that we are an am segulah, a treasured people and an am kedushah, a holy people. These two things might look very different from being a ‘chosen people’, but we know they express the special relationship we have with God – our own living covenant. It is not that this special relationship makes us better than anyone else, but simply that there is a mutual understanding between us, that we have agreed to have a relationship that is different and unique from all others. Let’s remember the potential for hope this has to provide us with. There is a reassurance that we will never be forgotten. We will always exist in relationship to each other, and God.

Progressively Speaking What does lockdown easing really mean for our community? BY RABBI MIRIAM BERGER Lockdown is easing – but it doesn’t really feel that way. I’m struggling to understand the difference between what we “can” do and what we “should” do. When we were in lockdown, it was easier to follow the rules. There were things we would have liked to do, but couldn’t. There were even things we felt were intrinsic to our lives that we were denied the chance to do, but we were “staying home and saving lives”. We tried to make the best of it knowing that everyone was in the same boat. However, the government has deemed that easing restrictions is a necessity to get on with life and move towards a new normal. But just because we can, should we? The guidelines for places of worship highlight that this isn’t about the pleasure of being with our community, but should only be about fulfilling a religious obligation. No Kiddush. No singing. No socialising on the premises afterwards or

allowing congregants to congregate. The latest move to permit places of worship to open is only about enabling people to perform their religious rituals. With the creation of online minyanim reaching more Jews than ever before and providing the ability for people to fulfil their Jewish obligations without fear of infection, there is a persuasive argument for us to preserve our reluctant, but surprisingly successful, status quo. However, with the most recent announcements from the government, I’m left completely bemused. If we wanted to have Kiddush at

Wagamama, it seems the government would happily subsidise half (terms and conditions apply). If we wanted to discuss and debate the finer points of the sermon after the service, it seems we would have to do so in our nearest Wetherspoons pub, and yet the guidelines for opening places of worship clearly state “no one should be permitted to pray anywhere except the designated area”. We are living in a state of confusion, where you can help boost the economy at the same time as increasing the risk of bringing the country back into lockdown, should someone in your bar or restaurant be an asymptomatic carrier of the virus. When choosing how and where you can fulfil your religious obligation, consider how you can avoid putting yourself or anyone else at risk and, importantly, remember the difference between “can” and “should”. ◆ Rabbi Miriam Berger serves Finchley Reform Synagogue

Dear Levi A bounce back business loan is intended to provide a business with working capital to keep the business afloat during the crisis by paying salaries, suppliers and other business running costs. It can even be used to pay off existing loans or for investment into the business. The loan’s eligibility requirements are that your business is UK based, was established before 1 March 2020 and has been adversely impacted by the coronavirus. As long as your business was solvent at the time of the application, and you intended to use it and indeed do use it for a business purpose then you will not be committing an offence. Offences under the Fraud

Act 2006 are committed if you have dishonestly made a false representation to make a gain for yourself or another, or a loss to another. If an application is made for a loan by dishonestly misrepresenting information then an offence may be committed under the act. So if you have taken out the loan by providing false information or with the intention of using it for an unrelated business expense then you would be committing an offence. There is no requirement that the money from the loan is used immediately and it can be held as a cash reserve. There is no requirement to hold it in a bank and therefore keeping it as Premium Bonds is not fraudulent.
