For years we have pursued justice.

Campaign Against Antisemitism referred the Labour Party to the Equality and Human Rights Commission because Jewhatred under Corbyn was out of control.

Now he has been suspended and Labour must finally reform.

For years, we exposed Jeremy Corbyn’s deeds in a front-page media campaign. But we knew we had to hold him and Labour to account legally too, so we referred Labour to the EHRC. Campaign Against Antisemitism acted as the complainant in the EHRC’s investigation into Labour antisemitism for the past two years, seeking British justice.

The EHRC’s report is a groundbreaking document.

It is the first ever finding by the EHRC of unlawful acts. It heavily criticises the Labour Party’s former leadership. It makes clear recommendations to ensure that there is zero tolerance of antisemitism in the Party in the future. It provides a robust framework for ensuring that the Party complies.

It finds that Labour’s leadership and culture created an unlawful environment that discriminated against Jews, as argued in the hundreds of pages of evidence and legal representations that we at Campaign Against Antisemitism submitted over many months.

When the report was released, Mr Corbyn predictably claimed that antisemitism had been exaggerated to undermine him, so we submitted a disciplinary complaint over his past deeds and his response to the EHRC’s report.

We also submitted complaints against 32 other complicit Labour figures, including 14 sitting MPs. Within an hour of sending our complaints, we received confirmation that Mr Corbyn had been suspended from Labour and had the whip withdrawn. This is a hugely significant turning point and an indicator of real change and accountability at last.

Mr Corbyn and those around him who took part in or enabled the gaslighting, harassment and victimisation of Britain’s Jewish minority are shamed for all time and now face justice at last.

Sir Keir Starmer has six months to act.

Lastly, we are immensely grateful to everyone who fought alongside us for this day to come. Too many of them have suffered for their principles.

United Synagogue and strictly-Orthodox urge prime minister to keep shuls open in lockdown

The United Synagogue, the Federation of Synagogues and the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations joined forces this week to urge the prime minister to allow shuls to remain open during the latest lockdown, insisting there is “no scientific rationale” for them to shut.

Pressure was building on Number 10 on Wednesday to reverse its policy after the UOHC, the representative body of more than 50,000 strictly-Orthodox Jews, joined Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and the Federation in telling ministers to let communal prayer continue. Their intervention came hours before places of worship were set to close on Thursday, except for private prayer, with senior Orthodox rabbis warning Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick that it had caused “shock and pain”.

After realising that places of worship were not going to be exempt from the shutdown, Jewish News understands that the Chief Rabbi sought to ensure measures were at least in place to help mourners. But it is understood a series of proposals – including holding services only for mourners to say Kaddish – were rejected. Attempts to find another compromise were ongoing last night.

In a marked change of tone from the lockdown earlier this year, Mirvis and other religious leaders – including the Archbishop of Canterbury – wrote to the prime minister to say they “strongly disagree with the decision to suspend worship during this time”. Alongside senior Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Pentecostal representatives, Mirvis said: “There is no scientific rationale for suspension of public worship where it is compliant with the guidance that we have worked jointly with government to establish.”

After Boris Johnson outlined a national lockdown until 2 December, Mirvis originally said it was “imperative” to close synagogues, adding that communal prayer in breach of coronavirus regulations would be a “desecration of God’s name”. But one day later, well-known United Synagogue rabbis broke ranks. On Tuesday the Federation of Synagogues, an Orthodox umbrella body, told Jenrick to rethink the decision, claiming “shuls can continue to function as places of communal prayer without introducing significant risk in transmission” if they adhere to present restrictions.”

America holds its breath as The US presidential election was still too close to call as Jewish News went to press last night (Wednesday), with the country’s ideological and political split exposed and exacerbated as never before, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

Polls showed that 77 percent of America’s 7.5 million Jews opted for Democrat Joe Biden, compared to 70 percent voting Democrat in 2016, but the big Jewish population in Florida – where Republican president Donald Trump won persuasively – was much less convinced.

Exit polls showed that 41 percent of Jews there voted for Trump this week, up from 24 percent in 2016, leading the Republican Jewish Coalition – which spent £4 million targeting Florida’s “undecided and persuadable” Jewish voters – to celebrate its “success” in the influential state.

In the strictly-Orthodox communities in New York and New Jersey, Trump was the clear favourite, garnering up to 80 percent of Charedi support, as anger over state Democrats’ coronavirus lockdowns registered at the polls yet, across the country, far more American Jews voted for Biden than voted for Hillary Clinton four years ago.

Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of the progressive Jewish group J Street, said: “In this historically pivotal election, Jewish voters have totally repudiated Donald Trump and a Republican Party that has catered to the most far-right, xenophobic elements of the country.”

Even before the final count, Biden had the most votes in any US election ever, but the complexity of the electoral college system means this is not enough. In 2016, Trump beat Clinton despite her winning three million more votes.

As many feared, the vote-counting was beset by legal wrangling, fraud allegations, suggestions of dishonesty and unsubstantiated claims of victory, with Trump at one point ordering a halt to vote-counting, directly contravening the US Constitution.

The day before the vote, the widely respected Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations issued an unusual security briefing, urging caution among US Jews both on and after election day.

“It remains likely that violent extremists will target individuals or institutions that represent symbols of their grievances… which increases the potential of politically or ideologically motivated threats against the Jewish community,” it said.

If the result is disputed, as expected, the world’s oldest democracy will join Tanzania, Belarus and the former Soviet state of Georgia in having its recent election challenged, but it may be mid next week before the true picture is known.

Pennsylvania’s result may be in by Friday, but the deadline for postal votes in Nevada and Alaska is Tuesday, 10 November, while the

Whatever the outcome, American Jewish groups were this week left harbouring concerns about the more extreme wings of each party, after the re-election of Democrats Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who both favour a boycott of Israel.

How Jews were targets in lead-up to the vote As with most recent US presidential campaigns, Trump v Biden turned ugly in some states, with racists targeting Jewish candidates – and even Jewish cemeteries.

In Alaska’s race for the Senate, Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan was this week accused of using antisemitic tropes in an advert showing his Jewish rival Al Gross holding piles of cash, with Jewish Senate leader Chuck Schumer behind him.

The American Jewish Congress (AJC) said the ad “clearly employs age-old antisemitic tropes and innuendo… implying [Gross] is buying the elections.

“The ad shows in the shadows a sinister-looking image of Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, who is also Jewish, and evokes the antisemitic trope that Jews and Jewish money control politics and our government”.

The AJC added that Sullivan “should unequivocally apologise” and called on Alaskans to “condemn and disassociate” from it.

Weeks earlier Jon Ossoff, the Jewish Democratic senate candidate in Georgia, was the target of an advert on Facebook from his Republican rival David Perdue, in which Ossoff ’s nose was artificially lengthened.

His rival later said it was a mistake and removed it, but Ossoff was incensed. “You were lengthening my nose in attack ads to remind everybody that I’m Jewish,” he told Perdue in a debate.

“Instead of leading and inspiring, he stoops to

mocking the heritage of his political opponents.”

In Michigan on Monday, the Ahavas Israel Jewish cemetery was graffitied, with the words ‘Trump’ and ‘MAGA’ (Make America Great Again – Trump’s campaign slogan) painted in red across several gravestones.

Worse may follow, according to the Anti-Defamation League’s Ryan Greer, who last month suggested that there may be serious problems if Biden wins.

“We are very concerned that there will be some violent acts,” Greer said. “As the conspiracy theories become more urgent, many of them may be directed towards Jews.”

House, Trump said the election, which was characterised by a high number of mail-in and early votes, in part owing to the coronavirus crisis, had been “an embarrassment to

our country”. He added: “We were getting ready to win this election – frankly we did win this election.”

The president announced that “we will be going to the US Supreme Court, we want all voting to stop”.

Later, he claimed it was “very strange” that “surprise ballot dumps” had eroded his overnight lead in key states.

“How come every time they count mail-in ballot dumps they are so devastating in their percentage and power of destruction,” he asked.

Trump has nominated three of the Supreme Court’s nine justices – including, controversially, Amy Coney Barrett, whose appointment was confirmed just a week before the election.

It is unclear what, if any, legal basis the president would have, with Biden’s camp insisting that the law required every “duly cast vote” to be counted.

Biden said: “We won’t rest until everyone’s vote is counted.”

His campaign had been braced for Trump to seize on record numbers of postal votes to allege he was being cheated.

By yesterday evening, neither candidate had yet achieved the 270 electoral college votes necessary to win, and counting was still under way in the states that will decide the outcome.

Biden had 238 expected electoral college votes to Trump’s 213.

Biden’s campaign chief Jen O’Malley Dillon said the Democrat was on a “clear path to victory” and would “garner more votes than any presidential candidate in history”.

Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Nevada will all go to Biden, she claimed.

Among the remaining undeclared states, Georgia is a “toss-up” and North Carolina is “really tight”, she said, but “probably leaning towards Trump right now”.

She added: “Last night, the president of the United States falsely claimed he had won this race and then demanded that votes stop being counted.

“The American people get to pick their president, the president does not get to pick the people whose votes get counted.”

Further results in Nevada, where the two candidates are neck and neck, will not be announced until today (Thursday), leaving six college votes up for grabs.

Trump, however, has seized major victories in Florida and Ohio, which both have long records of choosing the winner of the White House.

Despite the claims of the Trump campaign, former vice president Biden is believed to have won Arizona, a state that, in 72 years, has only once backed a Democrat in the race.

Jews for Trump say he ‘really delivered for us’ While most of America’s Jews voted for Joe Biden in this week’s election, the overwhelming majority of its strictly-Orthodox communities backed Donald Trump, continuing a recent run of support for Republican presidential candidates, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

“George W Bush was popular, and in 2012 Mitt Romney won 75 percent of the vote in Borough Park, a Chasidic dominated neighbourhood of New York City, so us supporting the Republican presidential nominee is not new,” says Yossi Gestetner, 32, co-founder of the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council.

“However, the intensity of support for Trump seems stronger and wider than in the past. I’m not sure how much of it is Trump.

People are a lot more worked up about politics these days than a decade or two ago. They have more outlets to share it and the social media phenomenon increases the intensity.”

Charedi life centres on New York and New Jersey, whose Democratic governors have pushed Covid lockdowns, restricting worship.

Has this helped Trump’s cause? It’s not that simple, he says.

“Trump says take precautions but don’t upend life, the cure can be worse than the illness, so certainly some people are drawn to that. But support was strong even before that.”

Why? “He did things like sign the early release of a couple of Orthodox Jewish people who were behind bars for white collar offences.”

Yaacov Schapiro, 30, a community activist and campaign organiser in Borough Park who helped to run Romney’s campaign, picks up the point, saying Trump’s justice reform legislation

and releasing of Orthodox prisoners has been important.

“He’s done things that have touched us all personally, such as releasing [Sholom] Rubashkin [a kosher meatpacking executive].

Thousands came out onto the street all over New York state, partying until midnight. It connected with everyone here.

“His prison reform released a lot of prisoners incarcerated for years, to give them a second chance. It benefited a Satmar man, Mordechai Samet, who was released before the High Holy Days. Trump also had a lot of Jewish friends connected to his administration.”

Schapiro says Trump’s appeal bypasses that of his predecessors. “Orthodox Jews have been voting for Republican presidents for years already, but we’re seeing a unity now that we’ve never seen in the past.For instance, we had the Jews for Trump rally. There was never a Jews for Bush rally, or a Jews for Romney rally. Hundreds and hundreds came.

“Also, previously, you always had some rabbis who came out for Democratic candidates.

Not this time. I haven’t seen any, and I’m not just talking about Charedim – the modern Orthodox as well.”

Gestetner says Trump’s policies, such as on tax, are helping, as they are benefiting Orthodox Jews. “A lot of people in the Charedi community are businessmen and they felt the difference.”

Moreover, with the judiciary, “Trump appointed traditionalists to the court,” he says.

“Orthodox Jews live life surrounded by religion.

They feel more at home with a president who appoints judges with a better understanding of

large families with religious lives than one who appoints liberals.”

Schapiro agrees. “We’ve never felt so comfortable. It’s many things, including Trump’s relationship with Israel, that went to a level that we’ve never seen before – the embassy, the Golan, aid to the Palestinians. He’s taken a side like no president before.”

He also thinks a changing Democratic Party has “pushed Jews towards Trump”, citing a rise of antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment.

“Four years ago, you didn’t have these radical

comments from the progressives like you do today.”

Gestetner says he is “not intimidated by a Biden presidency, but Trump has delivered on lots of issues close to Orthodox Jews, and then there’s the progressive wing of the Democratic Party – the ultra-liberals. What influence might they have on a Biden administration in terms of policy?” he asks. “They’ve gained a foothold.”

On Trump’s Orthodox support, he is not surprised. “We’re seeing things we haven’t seen in the past. People have been spoiled – in a good way.”

Does Biden hold grudge over Israel?

Should Joe Biden prevail, some suspect that the new man in the White House might harbour old grudges when it comes to Israel, at least while Benjamin Netanyahu reigns in Jerusalem, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

Relations were famously bad between the Israeli PM and Biden’s former boss Barack Obama, nosediving over Iran in 2015 when Bibi accepted a Republican invitation to address the US Congress without first asking the president.

Days later, key Obama lieutenants – including Biden – schmoozed Isaac Herzog, then Netanyahu’s main domestic rival. When Netanyahu arrived in the US, Obama and Biden were both pointedly absent.

Obama was unimpressed by Bibi’s manners and logic, saying his argu-

ment amounted to “regime change,” and on policy Biden’s Iran stance remains a question, yet the personal antagonism he has navigated goes back a decade at least.

In 2009, still new to the post, Obama sought to help Netanyahu’s challenger Tzipi Livni form a government but did not succeed. Three years later, in 2012, Netanyahu repaid

the compliment, backing Obama’s Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

In 2010, Biden felt ambushed after Netanyahu’s government waited for his first official visit as US vice-president to announce a major building programme in East Jerusalem, exactly the kind of settlement expansion Obama had sought to avoid.

A year later the White House returned the favour. Just before Netanyahu was due to fly to Washington, Obama gave a speech in which he said the 1967 borders should be the starting point for peace talks.

Biden visited Jerusalem again in March 2016, a year after Netanyahu spoke to Congress, and returned bullish, telling the pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC the following week that Israel “may not get all it wants,

but it will get all it needs”. In front of 18,000 die-hard lovers of Israel, he also criticised Israel’s “steady and systematic process of expanding settlements, legalising outposts, seizing land,” and chastised the lack of “political will… to move forward with serious negotiations”.

Despite the burned fingers, Biden is still an unequivocal friend of Israel’s, telling Democratic rivals last year that conditioning US military aid to Israel would be “a gigantic mistake”.

On that principle, Trump does not appear to agree, high ranking Jewish American soldier Lt Col Alexander Vindman testifying that Trump withheld weapons to Ukraine because he wanted Ukraine’s new president to investigate someone’s son. One guess whose son it was.

JEWS FAVOURED BIDEN 77-21, EXIT POLL FINDS Jewish voters favoured Joe Biden over Preident Donald Trump 77 percent to 21 percent in an exit poll.

GBAO Strategies, working for

J Street, a liberal Jewish Middle East advocacy group which endorsed Biden, spoke to 800 people who voted early or answered questions on election night.

The poll showed better numbers for

Biden than polling ahead of the election had suggested, albeit within the margin of error.

An American Jewish Committee poll last month showed Jews voting for

Biden over Trump 75 percent to 22 percent. With Biden and Trump locked in a tight race, results are not expected for a number of days. Polls had predicted a relatively easy victory for Biden.

Trump’s ‘polarisation’ spread chaos Criticism of Donald Trump and his ideological allies piqued this week with Jewish voices chief among the detractors, accusing him of destroying the liberal democratic order that helps protect Jews around the world, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

Dr Alon Ben-Meir, a professor of international relations at New York University (NYU), said the president had “gravely injured the country’s revered institutions and battered its unity as one nation”.

Ben-Meir added that Trump had “alienated Americans from one another and basked in the polarisation and division he gleefully fostered”, saying his re-election would “sow chaos, trepidation and fear, threatening liberty and freedom of the press”.

At a conference in Copenhagen in 2018, he lambasted “demagogues and charlatans stoking people’s legitimate fears, pushing the blame always on the other,” without saying who he was talking about.

“There always has to be scapegoats. Now it’s immigrants, the outsider, the other… In ways that evoke memories of the 1930s, frustrated and disaffected voters may turn instead to strongmen.”

Biden said he saw a pattern. “All round the world, repressive governments are borrowing from one another’s playbook, deriding a critical free press as fake news; questioning, indeed delegitimising, an independent judiciary; ham-stringing civil society with increasingly repressive laws,” he said.

“Taken together, they threaten democratic ideals that have been the

foundation for the western world.”

On this, many analysts think Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu – alongside other nationalist leaders of countries such as Poland, Hungary and India – are riding the same wave, with the Israeli prime minister this week criticised for being partisan.

Professor David Rothkopf, who worked for both Bill Clinton and Henry Kissinger, said: “Of all the world’s leaders, right-wing populists and ethno-nationalists, no one embraced America’s betrayer as fully and as short-sightedly as Netanyahu.”

John McDonnell faces suspension by the Labour Party after signing a letter claiming antisemitism has been “weaponised”, writes Jack Mendel.

It comes after the publication by the Equality and Human Rights Commission of its report into antisemitism which found the party broke equality laws under Jeremy Corbyn.

After the EHRC’s findings were published, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: “There are still those who think there’s no problem with antisemitism in the Labour Party. That it’s all exaggerated, or a factional attack. Then, frankly, you are part of the problem too. And you should be nowhere near the Labour Party either.”

Corbyn was suspended by Labour after he refused to accept in full the EHRC’s findings and said antisemitism had been “dramatically overstated for political reasons”.

On Saturday, McDonnell co-signed a letter by Progressive International entitled “We stand with Jeremy Corbyn”. The letter says Corbyn “not only spoke out about the ills of antisemitism in British society broadly.

He also took the issue of antisemitism in his own party seriously, listening to the concerns of Jewish constituents and improving the process for investigating and sanctioning cases of antisemitism.”

The letter adds: “As fierce opponents of antisemitism… we abhor the weaponisation of Jewish pain against the project of socialism and the legacy of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership in the United Kingdom.”

Signatories say that “the evidence of such efforts to weaponise the issue of antisemitism is clear”, claiming most Brits “now believe that a third of Labour Party members .. are the subject of antisemitism allegations. The truth is less than 2,000, less than 0.3 per cent of the party.”

A Jewish MP who served on Jeremy Corbyn’s front bench has apologised for taking the “wrong approach” during the Labour Party’s antisemitism row.

Leeds North East politician Fabian Hamilton issued a public apology to his local Jewish community following last week’s EHCR report.

Saying the report “has rightly been viewed as a shameful moment in the history of our party”, Hamilton said he is “horrified” by its findings.

“However, I would like to take this opportunity to also apologise myself,” he said. The MP was accused of overlooking antisemitism concerns while serving as shadow minister for peace and disarmament on Corbyn’s team.

He added: “While I did raise the pain and anger felt across the Jewish community in Leeds privately with Jeremy Corbyn and his team throughout his leadership, it’s clear that my testimonies were not acted upon.

“It was the wrong approach and I am truly sorry.”

ELLMAN GETS BRAVERY AWARD

Dame Louise Ellman has been honoured for her “decades-long commitment to fighting antisemitism”.

The former Labour politician was recognised by the Simon Wiesenthal Center with a Medal of Valour. Amal and George Clooney, received the 2020 Humanitarian award.

One of four female Jewish MPs who were vocal in opposition to Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of antisemitism, alongside Ruth Smeeth, Luciana Berger and Dame Margaret Hodge, she stood down and quit the party at the last election, citing its problems with the scourge.

Most Jewish Care jobs at risk The majority of jobs in Jewish Care’s centres are at risk of redundancy, with the organisation facing an estimated hit of £7million to its funds by the end of March 2021 due to the pandemic, writes Tali Fraser.

Jewish Care said: “This has been an extremely difficult

decision for us to make, and we have not taken it lightly.

“The wellbeing of our clients will always be a priority, and despite there being some

changes to staffing structures, we will ensure that the vital services we have been able to provide including regular calls to clients are maintained and the needs of those we look after, continue to be met through our outreach and digital programmes, befriending and meals on wheels services.”

Staff at all 70 Jewish Care centres will be facing redundancy but will be offered redeployment interviews for alternative roles.

Jonathan Zenios, chair of Jewish Care, said the charity envisaged a “virtual community centre” to sit alongside its real centres when they can eventually reopen.

AJEX annual parade goes online A poignant online event will replace next month’s annual parade and ceremony at the Cenotaph to remember Jews who fought and died for Britain, writes Adam Decker.

The normal in-person event, typically attended by thousands, cannot take place this year due to coronavirus restrictions, so remembrance will instead take place online at 2.30pm on Sunday, 15 November, with a special Shabbat the day before.

Organisers at the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women (AJEX) said those wishing to take part can download a profile picture for the weekend, an AJEX prayer, and an AJEX poppy image that can be shared with a personal message.

They can also share a photo of themselves or a family member as a veteran, while teachers can access educational resources, with a competition for children to enter.

AJEX chair Mike Bluestone said it was essential to remind people of the vital role played by the Jewish community in British life and to honour the “immense contribution” of Jewish ex-servicemen and women.

“It is our sacred duty to ensure that we always remember and commemorate our Jewish brothers and sisters who gave their all, not only in two World Wars, but in subsequent and contemporary conflicts in the service of HM Armed Forces,” he said.

“It is of course with a sense of deep sadness that we cannot be together this year at the Cen-

In Stamford Hill, the Jewish Community Council (JCC) echoed those sentiments, adding: “Religious essentials are paramount to faith communities, especially during a national health crisis… It is important those values are protected.”

Among the first to complain about the government’s decision was Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet of Mill Hill United Synagogue, who

told his local MP that he was “baffled, having finally created a well-oiled-machine, to have to shut down again”.

The letter from leading religious leaders to the prime minister echoed these claims, writing that faith leaders had demonstrated places of worship can be “made safe from Covid transmission”, writing that there is “no scientific justification for the wholesale suspension of public worship.”

Jenrick said: “We owe it to the country to act and to act swiftly. It is by taking these tough decisions now that we will get through this together.”

The Board of Deputies had previously asked the government for data on the spread of coronavirus to explain the decision to stop religious services in the new lockdown in England.

“We will get through this,” he said. “We’ll move forward.

We’ve been through things before and we’ve got through it.

“People want to share and be together. It will take time, but eventually we will overcome it, and things will go back to the way they were.”

Siblings spread smiles in lockdown

Instead of gardening and watching Netflix, a brother and sister team used the first lockdown earlier this year to source essential items for frontline workers.

Natasha Langleben and Josh Adley, who in 2017 cofounded Linkey, a social enterprise to support the homeless, helped create a staffroom for nurses, provided snacks and vital skin products for medical teams and found companies willing to donate, along with the charities they partnered.

Now as a second lockdown begins, the pair are at it again. Determined to make

December the season to be jolly, Linkey UK is partnering with Young Barnet Foundation and Jewish News as media partner to ensure disadvantaged children in the borough receive a wrapped present.

Gifts will also be donated to children for Chanukah through the charities Noa Girls, The Boys Clubhouse, Jami, Jewish Women’s Aid and the Jewish Family Centre.

In the past few days, Rachel Riley has also joined the campaign and tweeted about it.

“Child poverty is not an issue anyone can ignore,” says Adley. “Linkey, as the name suggests was launched to link those who care with those in need and, right now,

it is children who should not go without Christmas or Chanukah.”

It was an encounter with a homeless man in Barnet that pushed Adley towards these

philanthropic initiatives.

“He asked me where the nearest shelter was and I didn’t know.

“He was desperate and as I left, he said: ‘You’re not going

to just leave me here are you?’”

That was the turning point for the pair, who are both parents and wear their hearts on their sleeves.

“We are Jews who celebrate Christmas,” says Adley sheepishly, revealing that their cleaner last year brought her son who saw their tree and the presents underneath. “He said to his mum ‘I thought Santa

couldn’t come this year?’ This was one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life.”

He and his sister made sure the boy got the present he wanted and intend to do the same for hundreds of others with the 2020 campaign.

It is hoped the resource, which is being distributed to 1,000 secondary schools, will

counteract these “destructive” influences on social media, which teachers and anti-racism campaigners warn are becoming more widespread.

Professor Stuart Foster, executive director of the UCL Centre and textbook co-author, said teachers already find the Holocaust a difficult subject to teach as many are self-taught.

He told the PA news agency: “If you Google ‘Holocaust Education Lesson Plans’ you get so much and I think teachers really find it hard, quite understandably, to separate the wheat

from the chaff, to try and understand what actually is reliable and trustworthy.”

School staff are facing challenging conversations with young people who have been exposed to inaccurate content about the Holocaust online, Foster added.

“There’s some appeal to conspiracy theories. There’s some kind of crazy attraction to this sense of pushing back on what teachers or experts tell you. These teachers are looking to us to help them counteract these dangerous influences through education.”

Neo-Nazi teen is found guilty

Almost 200 Jewish students have signed up for a screening week at universities in November and more are being sought, as medics aim to help identify carriers of the most severe Jewish genetic disorders, writes Adam Decker.

Run by the charity Jnetics, the first virtual GENEius University Screening Week (GUSW) will take place from 23 to 29 November, with students signing up able to find out if they are at risk of passing on any life-threatening genetic inheritance.

“GUSW is a week-long virtual event through which Jewish students can take part in carrier screening for nine of the most severe Jewish genetic disorders (JGDs) for free and from home,” said Jnetics’ new chief executive Nicole Gordon. “Almost 200 signed up in the first week, and we would like to be able to screen all youngsters who ask for this.”

The GENEius programme is Jnetics’ flagship education and screening initiative.

A teenage Satanist neo-Nazi has been spared jail after admitting terror offences.

Harry Vaughan, 18, developed an interest in right-wing extremism, Satanism, the occult and violence after disappearing “down a rabbit hole of the internet” from the age of 14, the Old Bailey heard.

He had admitted 14 terror offences and two counts of possessing child sex abuse images and was sentenced to two years’ detention suspended for two years.

Sentencing, Mr Justice Sweeney took account of the defendant’s young age and his diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder, saying that Vaughan had lived at home with his parents and had been an A-star student.

“However, none of them knew you had been involved in groups on the internet and thereafter had become interested and involved in extreme right-wing ideology,” he said.

Jewish students in Year 12 and at universities are educated about JGDs and the importance of carrier screening in their prevention.

The test covers severe recessive disorders such as Tay Sachs, Familial Dysautonomia and Bloom Syndrome that have a much-increased prevalence in the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

“These disorders are all devastating, incur-

able and life-shortening conditions that are entirely preventable via carrier screening,” said Gordon. “Similar international student screening programmes have had immense success, virtually eradicating these disorders from the community.”

If a student finds out they ‘carry’ one of these JGDs, Jnetics says they then have the information they need to decide whether to avoid passing on a severe and incurable disorder to any future children.

To participate in GUSW, students pre-register online and choose a virtual screening appointment, before receiving a screening pack in the post.

WESTMINSTER MEMORIAL IS ‘SYMBOLICALLY IMPORTANT’ Former prime minister David Cameron has strongly defended proposals to site a Holocaust memorial near Parliament, after complaints it was the wrong location for the project.

The comments came after controversy was provoked by plans to erect a Holocaust memorial and learning

centre in Victoria Tower Gardens, a small, triangular, Grade II listed park next to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.

In February, Westminster City Council’s planning committee voted unanimously to reject allowing the memorial to be built at the park,

saying it contravenes planning rules on size, design and location.

But, three months earlier in November, the government “called in” the decision on the proposal, meaning it would decide whether the project should go ahead, rather than being determined by the council.

Giving evidence to a public inquiry into the matter on Tuesday, Cameron said he had set up the cross-party memorial project while in power “to remember the past and to make sure we safeguard the future”, adding the site was “symbolically important”.

LEADER DENOUNCES COVID INFORMERS The leader of a major Chasidic sect in Israel denounced those who inform on other Jews for violating school closure orders and other restrictions intended to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The comments by Rabbi Yisroel Hager, head of the Vizhnitz sect, are reminiscent of others accusing whistleblowers in Chasidic communities in recent months of being a “moser”, one who informs on their Jew to the secular authorities, in relation to the breaking of pandemic-related restrictions.

MUSILIM COUNCIL ADOPTS DEFINITION An international council of Muslim religious leaders has adopted a definition of antisemitism that includes some forms of vitriol against the Jewish state. The Global Imams Council, a body created in 2007 in a bid to heal sectarian divisions in wartorn Iraq, announced last Thursday its adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which includes demonisation of Israel alongside more traditional forms of antisemitism.

Shockwaves over Vienna attack Jewish communities worldwide expressed deep shock this week at the “terrible attacks” in Vienna that left four people dead and several injured.

Police in the Austrian capital said the attack was considered to have an Islamist motive, with a suspect – who was shot dead by police – armed with an assault rifle, carrying other handguns, and wearing a fake explosive belt.

Shots were fired at six locations in the city centre on Monday evening and two men and one woman were killed.

Both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted to express solidarity with Austria after the attack.

Johnson said: “I am deeply shocked by the terrible attacks in Vienna.

“The UK’s thoughts are with the people of Austria – we stand united with you against terror.”

Vienna police said several shots were fired shortly

after 8pm local time in a city centre street.

Michael Ludwig, mayor of Vienna, said 15 people were admitted to hospital, seven with serious injuries.

A police officer was among the injured, Austrian police confirmed on Twitter.

Patel said the UK, which has seen a number of terror atrocities in recent years, including an attack on Parliament in 2017, stood “ready to support” Austria following the rampage.

The home secretary tweeted: “Deeply shocked and saddened by the incident that has taken place in Vienna.

“My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected and we stand ready to support in any way we can.”

Vienna’s streets were reportedly particularly busy as people took to bars and restaurants on the eve of the introduction of harsher restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Rabbi criticises lockdown demos A leader of a major Chasidic sect in New York denounced protests earlier this month during which Orthodox Jews voiced their anger at lockdown measures targeting their neighborhoods.

Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, leader of a faction of the Satmar community based in the Chasidic enclave of Kiryas Joel in Orange County, criticised the protests at an event last Tuesday.

“None of you should be seen at these protests,” he told the crowd, according to BoroPark24. “Praise unto the person who doesn’t follow in the ways of the evil.”

‘ISLAMISTS HAVE DECLARED WAR’ Islamists have declared war on France, a senior leader of French Jews has warned, in the wake of last week’s multiple assaults, including the murder of three people at a church in Nice.

Gil Taieb, vice president of the CRIF umbrella group of French Jewish communities, made the comments in reference to the beheading of one woman and the fatal stabbing of two others outside the Notre Dame church of the coastal city.

The perpetrator was shouting “Allah hu akbar” – Arabic for Allah is the greatest – before he was shot and rushed to the hospital, Le Monde reported.

“The Islamists are waging war against us!” Taieb wrote on Twitter. “We stand united against Islamist barbarism.”

The incidents followed protests across the Muslim world against a plan against radical Islam pushed by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Turmoil wins

As we went to press on Wednesday evening there was no clear US presidential winner – it was simply too close to call, with Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Alaska all still undeclared and potential challenges elsewhere.

Joe Biden had already won the second highest number of counted votes of any candidate in US presidential election history, 2.3 million more than Donald Trump, but because of the quirks of the country’s electoral college system, that means nothing.

By the time you read this the world will probably know who it is dealing with for the next four years. Let’s hope so. Uncertainty is the last thing we need.

What was certain by Wednesday evening was that America remains bitterly divided. With Republicans holding the Senate and Democrats suffering losses in the House, Biden would not get much through Congress even if he does win. What broke in 2016 remains broken.

Three years before Boris Johnson bulldozed Labour’s ‘red wall’ in the north of England last year, turning many northern left-leaning constituencies Tory for the first time in decades, Trump did the same in the States, breaking the Democrats’ reliable ‘blue wall’. The ageing and familiar Biden has not put the political map together again.

As with 2016, Trump’s base is still led by white voters without college degrees (but with guns and suspicions), while Biden’s sails are still blown by liberal states like California and increasingly large Hispanic and black demographics. Just as with Brexit, differences have become schisms.

America’s Jews are also divided. Overall, roughly four out of five voted for Biden, according to polls, but Florida – with a huge and ageing Jewish population – went wholescale Trump. In the sizeable, strictly-Orthodox worlds of New York and New Jersey, the general ratio was reversed – almost 80:20 Trump. We’ve publish their reasons on page four. We’ve also aired the concerns many Jews share about Trump’s anti-democratic tendencies, which were on show again in the early hours of Wednesday, crying foul and calling for a stop to vote counting.

Constitution? What constitution?

As we went to print, the vast majority of British Jews were hoping for a Biden win. Yet if the Democrats do take the White House it will be less a vote for Biden than a vote against Trump. He wanted it to be all about him – and it has been.

Love him or loathe him, the man whose recent decisions and diplomatic breakthroughs have changed Israel’s future will continue to shape America’s, regardless of whether it is he or only his legacy hovering around the Oval Office for the next four years.

Finding ways around rules Lockdown in Tel Aviv does seem to have reduced the infection rate and, to date, the restaurants and shops remain closed. While here for the birth of our new grandson, we have, however, found that there are certain ways around the shopping restrictions for the more canny shopper.

Some shopkeepers are stocktaking with the door slightly ajar, enabling the shopper to ask to see various items without actually accessing the shop.

Corbyn showed his true colours, arguing that it dramatically exaggerated antisemitism in the Labour Party. That makes one wonder whether he is in denial or is a blaggard.

Angela Rayner called Corbyn a “thoroughly decent man”. Nothing could be more simple for Corbyn than to defend his actions and opinions in a court of law. Let British Jewry now see justice being served.

It seems the suspension of the person responsible for enabling antisemitism to flourish within the party and then denying the scale of the antisemitism – following the report of the EHRC – has suddenly aroused McCluskey’s sense of justice.

He has reinvented the principles of right and wrong and turned morality on its head.

Trump the flat-out liar is a reminder that words matter JENNI FRAZER

I

f there is one thing this year’s American elections have taught me, it is that journalism was perhaps not the best career choice. The only way to go, in this increasingly deranged world, is the path of law. It’s the lawyers who take the often unwilling citizenry to the courts, the lawyers who shake an issue by the scruff of its neck and the lawyers who provide clarification.

At the time of writing, I have no idea who has won the US presidential election, so it seems this column is a bit of a hostage to fortune. All I can confidently predict is that a man in his 70s will win, although one wag on Twitter suggested that Joe Biden, now 77, was likely to be dead by the time every single ballot was counted.

It shouldn’t be a secret that I am firmly in the Anyone But Trump camp. I can’t say I understand why a man who has been president for four years has been campaigning with the slogan of ‘Make America Great Again’, which was all very fine and well in 2016 but today rather suggests that he didn’t succeed during his term in office.

As for the arcane mysteries of the US voting system and the Electoral College, I have good and close American friends and every time there is an election I ask them to explain how it works, only for all understanding to evaporate almost as soon as the count is over.

This year, however, we can’t even safely say when the election is over, since some states are allowed to count votes for up to nine days after election day itself.

If there is another, more serious lesson to be drawn from the US elections, it is that words matter — and their interpretation matters more.

When Donald Trump straddles the world stage and flat-out lies, or invents ‘fake news’, then no one knows whom to trust, and violence often ensues.

When Israel’s current prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, willingly attended anti-Oslo Accords demonstrations at which the then premier Yitzhak Rabin was portrayed as a Nazi, or figured in a mock funeral, no one should have been surprised at the tragic outcome – Rabin’s assassination, 25 years ago this month.

This is the same Netanyahu, of course, who today freely indulges in inflamma-

And, inevitably, we have the so-called lifelong campaigner against antisemitism, former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who practically turned himself into a pretzel in order both to rail against the rulings of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, while stating he accepted its findings.

Fortunately, the Labour Party, for once, saw sense and Corbyn was suspended, pending investigation. It is my fervent hope that he is finally expelled, although I’m not holding my breath.

Eventually, one way or the other, some part of the procedure will end up in the courts. Trump spent the week before the election threatening legal action if he lost.

I rather liked the response of former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power, a Democratic campaigner. Asked about Trump’s threats, she smiled. “We have lawyers too,” she said.

The pandemic’s legacy?

’m convinced the pandemic has made the whole world Jewish.

The first inkling I had was in March, when everyone started wearing masks the week before Purim. A coincidence perhaps, but that was just the beginning of suspicious behaviour among the non-Jewish population.

There was lots of ritual hand-washing and, in the weeks before Passover, just as we traditionally rush to the supermarket to fill our trolleys, everyone in the UK started doing the same.

Immediately afterwards, the country entered a period when it was prohibited to get married or take a haircut. Dating couples even became shomer negia and avoided physical contact.

Then, of course, the government went full-on rabbinic by confusing everyone with complex new rules, all of which were open to interpretation and had huge geographical variance. At this point, most people got frustrated and took to social media to moan about the rules and ask whether the rule of six applied outdoors or was it only indoors, and

did it matter if the other household were in a different tier and had their own support bubble.

These online complaints suggest to me that while everyone may have secretly wanted to be Jewish, sadly they weren’t yet ready. They can’t be, because these rules the gentile populace find baffling are absolutely nothing for us Jews.

If this were Jewish law, it would be that restaurants must close at sundown. Masks would need to have a minimum size of a tefach (which Boris Johnson holds to be 3.15 inches but Nicola Sturgeon says is 4.2 inches). And, of course, handwashing would need to be done with the right hand first, each hand three times, and if you speak in between singing Happy Birthday and putting on your mask, then you need to do it all over again.

Some people have starting thinking about the laws of lockdown in a way that makes me think they would be outstanding Talmudic scholars. A non-Jewish friend was having a guest over on the Friday evening during which London entered Tier 2. When I suggested his caller would have to leave on the stroke of midnight, my friend argued the key thing was your location at midnight, at which point that

location – and presumably the surrounding four cubits – would immediately become your permitted base. This being the case, his friend could stay indefinitely, but after leaving would not be allowed back. (If you want more of this, Tracture Eruvin is the one for you.)

Everyone has become so interested in the minutiae of what can only be called Hilchos Lockdown that people have started discussing the most Jewish of concepts: the spirit of the law. So when Dominic Cummings drove to Durham, either to visit family or test his eyesight depending on which version you believe, many commentators felt that while he may not have broken the law, his journey to the north-east was not in the spirit of the law.

The only other times I have heard this phrase has been in connection to Sabbath

observance when someone has considered leaving a TV on in order to watch the Cup Final.

And yet, I believe the gradual Jewification of the world goes deeper still. Jews have always thought their own level of observance is the gold standard. It doesn’t matter where you are on the religious spectrum: anyone more religious than you is crazy meshuga frummer; anyone less religious is practically a gentile.

Now the rest of the world is doing this regarding the observance of Covid guidelines.

Anyone who is a bit more careful than you is a germaphobe Howard Hughes-level lunatic.

Anyone who does slightly less than you is a disgrace, has blood on their hands, and any future outbreak will be their personal fault.

Welcome to the club, everyone. You’re all Jews now.

Corbyn shamed but the damage has been done JONATHAN BOYD

T

here’s no great triumph to be had in the shaming of Jeremy Corbyn. Yes, the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that the party he led until April unlawfully harassed and discriminated against Jews. And yes, under Sir Keir Starmer, Labour has suspended him for again minimising the scale of the issue. But there’s little cause to rejoice: the damage has already been done.

Corbyn was elected Labour leader in 2015. Among those who nominated him was Margaret Beckett, a former foreign secretary and acting party leader. She did not do because she ever intended to vote for him but to ensure that candidates represented the broad spectrum of the political left. She subsequently admitted to being a “moron”.

She wasn’t alone. Twelve MPs nominated him in the names of inclusivity, even though they personally supported more moderate candidates. Their support was critical: Corbyn

secured 36 nominations from MPs, one more than was required to qualify for the contest.

The result of their misjudgments can be found not only in the 130 pages of the EHRC report. It is written all over the results of the Brexit referendum, the 2019 general election, the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, and perhaps contemporary politics as a whole.

Whether one supports the results of the Brexit referendum or not, one thing is clear: Corbyn’s Labour Party failed to engage seriously in a national debate that has huge ramifications for the future of the country. The voice of Labour – the official opposition – was blundering and incomprehensible throughout the debate. That’s part of Corbyn’s legacy.

The 2019 election result was shocking too.

After doing rather well in his first general election in 2017, Corbyn lost about 20 percent of the votes he won two years earlier, handing the Tories their largest share of the vote since Margaret Thatcher came to power in 1979.

He was punished for his antisemitism certainly, but arguably far more for his foreign and economic policy. A competent and measured Labour leader could have won

Yet Corbyn somehow captured the spirit of the age – a wish for ideological purity.

The election of Donald Trump in the United States, Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil and Viktor Orbán in Hungary, all Corbyn’s ideological nemeses, similarly prey on populist desires for easy answers to complex questions.

Which brings us to today, and Covid-19.

To be fair to all political leaders, managing a pandemic is immensely complex and challenging. Yet, clearly, some have done better than others. Few would put Boris Johnson near the top of that list, even though the UK has the wealth and the scientific infrastructures to have navigated the crisis far more

effectively. This should have been handled better, and whilst the government will ultimately stand or fall on its performance, it was Labour’s failure to field an electable candidate that helped to hand them the keys to power.

When I look back to 2015 I see a handful of well-meaning MPs giving a leg-up to someone unfit to lead a major political party.

His enabling of antisemitism was evident long before that, if anyone had bothered to look.

Antisemitism often enters politics through the back door. It finds its way in when people ignore it or downplay it, choosing to focus on national pride, economic revival, free health care or overthrowing the elite. That’s what happened in the case of Jeremy Corbyn.

How Jewish students are creating their new normal JAMES HARRIS

know many people believe in-person campus activity now is non-existent because of Covid-19, that people are not meeting and consequently Jewish students are not mingling. This could not be further from reality.

In a sense, we should not be surprised.

For more than 100 years of Jewish university life, activity on campus has continued, stubbornly surviving two world wars, a series of devastating recessions and global health issues.

The coronavirus pandemic is just the latest obstacle Jewish students have had to navigate to guarantee the continuation of vibrant and exciting activities and initiatives, and they are doing so by adapting.

Whereas previously the Jewish Society (JSoc) was primarily a social space, somewhere to meet new people and catch up with friends, its function has now expanded, redefining decades of tradition.

As UJS president I have learned that, no

matter what, Jewish students will persist in making life on campus thrive and adapt to the times in which we find ourselves to create a ‘new normal’ of their own.

Fascinatingly, the JSoc has morphed into a major support mechanism for Jewish students, providing invaluable spaces to connect with their Judaism in new ways while attempting to sustain some semblance of the ‘old normal’ by holding socially-distant, in-person events.

One such support mechanism is the innovation of a JSoc ‘family’ system like in Bristol, whereby incoming freshers can meet fellow first year students while also being assigned

JSoc ‘parents’ – older students who freshers can go for support or just a friendly face.

Navigating this part-virtual, part-physical, hybrid campus has been, and remains, a challenge. But with this, and the many other challenges of the past few months, there have also been exciting opportunities to drive Jewish student engagement into a new digital age, the likes of which have never been experienced on this scale.

Ironically, though, in an age of technological dependence (whether by habit or necessity), I have found the following a difficult question with which to grapple: While students are spending their entire lives online, can we really expect them to sit in front of a screen for yet more online JSoc events?

Again, they are adapting. At King’s College London JSoc, for instance, students hosted an incredible online event focused on the plight of Uyghur Muslims, as well as arranging a sociallydistant hike in groups of six, which would likely not have occurred in this weather if students had not been craving a degree of engaging programming and a break from their screens.

Likewise the small JSocs, often known for

demonstrating the epitome of familial atmosphere, have replaced their previously tight-knit gatherings with virtual social events, such as at Queen Mary University, where the JSoc coordinated virtual pub quizzes and online games nights to sustain that same sense of community.

In all this, there are some pleasing constants, not least that famous desire for a Friday night dinner – a defining feature of many a Jewish university experience.

Yet where previously hundreds would descend on an in-person Friday night dinner in Birmingham, for instance, now those same students celebrate Shabbat like never before – with hundreds of takeaway meals and Shabbat packs provided.

It flips the concept on its head, from an in-person collective to celebrating in far smaller groups, and I know JSocs are toiling to make it work – Southampton JSoc committee spent hours cooking into the night.

From Southampton to Sheffield, London to Leeds, Bristol to Birmingham, determination and ingenuity will keep Jewish activity on campus alive.

For now, at least, JSocs are going nowhere.

1 HEARTFELT WALK

Eleven-year old Amelie from Richmond has completed a 26mile marathon walk in aid of the Save A Child’s Heart charity in Israel, raising £11,500. Her goal was to walk 60,000 steps to raise enough for a child from a developing country to undergo life-saving heart surgery. “The heart of a healthy 12-year-old girl beats approximately 60,000 times every 12 hours,” explained Amelie, who is ready to keep going. “As long as people keep donating, I’ll keep walking,” she said. The next stop is the 19-mile walk from Hampton Court Palace to Windsor Castle. Entertainer Uri Geller donated signed art in aid of her campaign, telling her in an audio message: “Whatever you can visualise, you can materialise...There is nothing you cannot be, do, have or achieve, because you are the architect of your own life so go for it!”

Chai Cancer Care hosted its Natalie Shipman memorial lecture online, attracting more than 400 households who heard about new strategies improving outcomes in ovarian cancer. Natalie (pictured), daughter of Chai’s founder president, inspired Chai’s creation 30 years ago, having been diagnosed with cancer aged just two and passing away from a brain tumour just before her eighth birthday.

Sandra Alexander, a wellbeing coordinator at Jewish Care, is cycling 100 miles on her exercise bike to raise money for the charity’s well-being activities and events online.

Her journey over two and a half weeks will cover the distance of Jewish Care’s services from Stepney to Selig Court via Southend. Sandra’s grandson, Ezra, a keen cyclist himself, helped her make a fundraising film and she has received the support of friends including Dame Maureen Lipman.

Equality and Human Rights campaigner Trevor Phillips has called on Jews and other minority groups to be vocal and proud of who they are, without fear of creating fuel for racists. Discussing diversity, inclusion, politics and ethics with Leo Baeck Faculty member Dr Keith Kahn-Harris at the college’s virtual Lionel Blue Lecture, Phillips said: “We have every right to be proud of our different identities to shout about them and also to allow other people to share in parts of them that will enhance their lives too.”

‘We were born into a state of bereavement’

Francine Wolfisz speaks to Robert Rinder about My Family, The Holocaust And Me, his new documentary exploring the impact of the Shoah on the second generation

W

ithout knowing the brutal history of this place, the sprawling mound rising from the earth just outside the town of Voranova, in Belarus, could easily be overlooked.

But for those who are all too aware, such as barrister and TV presenter Robert Rinder, it represents “the most articulate expression of human evil”.

For it was here that Rinder’s paternal grandfather’s family, having been deported from their homes in Lithuania, were forcibly marched

by Nazi officers, told to lie down and murdered with machine guns.

Remarkably, Rinder finds an elderly eyewitness to the horrific scenes that took place 80 years ago. It is just one of the many poignant scenes featuring in his new two-part series, My Family, The Holocaust And Me, which begins on BBC One on Monday, coinciding with the anniversary of Kristallnacht.

The documentary was inspired by Rinder’s moving story of his Holocaust survivor grandfather, which featured on Who Do You Think You Are? two years ago, as well as a desire to explore how such events have impacted second and third generation relatives like himself.

The documentary also highlights how years of silence about the Holocaust has affected second Natalie Clein and her sister Louisa; Bernie Graham; and Noemie Lopian with Jacques Deserces

and third generation survivors.

For Graham, the overriding feeling in his family was that he was “born into a state of bereavement”, something Rinder also understands.

“My mother would tell you she has the same echo in her life,” he tells me.

“Her earliest memories were of quiet whispers about families and parents who weren’t there anymore, who had been killed and murdered. Nicht in front of the kinder, she would hear.

“It’s not so much that they didn’t say anything, but rather that they didn’t say anything for a long time. The whole world was in trauma, and so they didn’t think people wanted to hear.

“Secondly, they have to find emotional strategies to rebuild their lives. Just think of the magnitude, of having to sit down and say my four sisters, my brother, my parents were all murdered. No wonder they didn’t speak until later in life.”

Yet for all the trauma and tragedy these survivors endured, Rinder was heartened that many of the stories emerging are ones of hope.

In one particularly emotional scene, Rinder and his mother meet 92-yearold Leon Rytz, the last survivor of Treblinka who, despite seeing his entire family murdered there, went on to rebuild his life after the war.

“It’s almost universally true that the narrative of the survivors I’ve had the gift of experience from, have all made this conscious choice to curate their lives in light and optimism. They found joy despite having experienced a trauma most humans can’t imagine.”

He adds: “Almost every story was overwhelming and yet there was this feeling of optimism. It’s not what I anticipated, but emerged like a light out of the darkness.” � My Family, The Holocaust And Me starts on Monday, 9 November at 9pm on BBC One

FILM Esau

Unorthodox actress Shira Haas stars alongside Harvey Keitel and Lior Ashkenazi in a new Israeli drama.

Esau is a modern spin on the Biblical story of sibling rivalry between Jacob and Esau and has been adapted from Israeli author Meir Shalev’s novel of the same name.

Ashkenazi, known for his roles in the Israeli indie hit Foxtrot and alongside Richard Gere in Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer, stars as the protagonist, a writer who returns home to Israel to help care for his ailing father, played by Keitel.

His brother, played by Away actor Mark Ivanir, has married the woman they both loved and taken over the family’s bakery business.

Haas, who broke out in the Israeli series Shtisel, plays the brothers’ love interest in the film, which is directed and co-written

by Russian film-maker Pavel Lungin.

The film will be released on digital platforms and VOD on 1 December.

ONLINE THEATRE Little Wars Imagine if literary greats Gertrude Stein, Dorothy Parker, Lillian Hellman and Agatha Christie all came together for dinner on the eve of the Nazi invasion of France, writes Francine Wolfisz.

That’s the scenario of Carl McCasland’s play Little Wars, directed by Hannah Chissick and now streaming online until 8 November. It features a cast led by Juliet Stevenson as Hellman, alongside Sophie Thompson (Christie), Linda Bassett (Stein), Catherine Russell (Alice B Toklas), Debbie Chazen (Parker) and Sarah Solemani (anti-fascist freedom fighter Muriel Gardiner).

For Stevenson, who is best known for her roles in Truly, Madly, Deeply alongside the late actor Alan Rickman, as well as Emma and Bend It Like Beckham, there’s a thrill in portraying American-Jewish playwright Hellman (pictured).

“She’s always been a bit of a heroine,” explains the 64-year-old actress, who is starring in new BBC comedy Out of Her Mind with Sara Pascoe.

“She was one of those amazing people who didn’t yield to The House Un-American Activities Committee under McCarthy and was blacklisted.” That said, Hellman, who scored a string of successes on Broadway including The Children’s Hour, Toys In The Attic and The Little Foxes, was not without controversy.

With a reputation for being loose with the truth, it was once said of Hellman that “every word she writes is a lie, including ‘and’ and ‘the’.”

Scarlett Johansson is set to produce and star in a new science fiction drama for Apple and A24 from Disobedience director Sebastián Lelio.

Bride,, a modern take on the Bride of Frankenstein,, revolves around a woman (played by Johansson, pictured)) created by a brilliantly-minded entrepreneur who wants the perfect wife.

But when she rejects him, she is forced to flee her confined existence and confront a world that sees her as a monster.

But some claim Hellman “stole” the story from the real-life escapades of anti-fascist activist Muriel Gardiner.

The episode features in Little Wars as a way of explaining how Hellman’s character goes from a place of pessimism to actively standing up against Nazism. “Something happens in that room to switch her from being resigned about any attempt to stop this inexorable Nazi march into France to actively engaging in a mission.”

As to Stevenson’s own own dream dinner party guests, she lists William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson and Katherine Mansfield, alongside more poignant choices, including her father who died when she was 34.

“There were so many conversations we never had, and he never met my children. Number two would be my brother, who I also lost when he was far too young,” she tells me. A third guest would be her late mother-in-law, who arrived as a Jewish refugee from Vienna in 1938 and lost all her family in the Holocaust.

“There’s a million questions I would have liked to ask, but she never wanted to talk about it. She just wanted to make the best of her life.”

Meanwhile, her Russian émigré mother, Asia (Alena Yiv) works long hours as a nurse and keeps her daughter at arm’s length. In her feature debut, director Ruthy Pribar explores maternal instincts, teenage experience and the fears of a life-limiting condition without the usual clichés and obvious sentimental signposting.

Destined to be a huge NBA star, only to be rejected, Aulcie Perry was spotted by a scout for Maccabi Tel Aviv in 1976 while playing at the Rucker courts in Harlem. Quickly signed to play for their fledgling team, the Israeli players immediately responded to Perry's leadership and that year had the most extraordinary season in its history.

Perry helped the team to its first European Championship, a prize they took four years later again under his leadership and to the surprise of many, he then converted to Judaism, adopted the Hebrew name Elisha Ben Avraham, and became an Israeli citizen.

Dani Menkins’ inspiring film tells the story of this remarkable athlete who captured the spirit of a nation and put Israel on the map.

SHIVA BABY

This hilarious debut from writer/director Emma Seligman introduces Danielle (Rachel Sennott), a directionless college senior with a Sugar Daddy called Max. We meet Max (Danny Deferrari) right away, but Danielle doesn’t expect to then meet him at a family shiva. Avoiding him, his beautiful wife, her overbearing parents Joel (Fred Melamed) and Debbie (Polly Draper) and an ex-girlfriend proves a challenge in the claustrophobic house of mourning.

WINTER JOURNEY

The late Bruno Ganz gives his last and most poignant performance in a film that documents Gunther Goldschmid’s escape from Nazi Germany. Over a few days in the mid-1990s, Gunther, a naturalised American citizen, told his son Martin how he and his wife Rosemarie – both gifted musicians and members of the Jewish Cultural League – fled just weeks before Jewish emigration was banned in 1941. Based on Martin’s book, which chronicles his father’s real-life events, this deeply personal film tenderly explores the many losses – family, homeland, occupation – experienced by the survivors.

“I laughed all the way through” was exactly the comment writer/director Alon Gur Arye wanted from an audience member enthusing about his parody of the 1990 Naked Gun series. Of course, with David Zucker, creator of Airplane and Naked Gun as creative consultant, it was destined to deliver, along with heartthrob Tsahi Halevi as brave but dim Mossad agent Guy Moran.

The action revolves around the kidnapping in Israel of an American tech billionaire, which leads Moran to join forces with beautiful CIA agent Linda Harris (Efrat Dor) to release the wealthy techie and save the world from an impending disaster.

THEY CALL ME DR MIAMI 15 November, 7.30pm

The trailer alone will push you towards 78 minutes with the man known to his million of Snapchat followers as Dr Miami. Broadcasting live operations on social media has turned plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer into the rappers’ favourite improver of body imperfection, but at home, he is a happily married, father-of-five Orthodox Jew. Salzhauer struggles with the constant dilemma of faith versus fixing, which even has his daughter asking: “If God gave it to us, who are we to redo it?” Jean-Simon Chartier has made a dazzling and defiant documentary about the frum exhibitionist.

THE END OF LOVE

HAPPY TIMES

Falling in love with someone from another country inevitably leads to difficult choices, as shown in this subtle and timely centrepiece gala film from Keren Ben Rafael. Yuval (Belgian actor Arieh Worthalter) meets and marries Julie (Judith Chemla), who takes him from his native Israel to Paris. When his visa expires and he finds himself back in Israel, communicating with his wife and baby via Skype, the doubts each of them harbours about the future of their relationship are revealed. Israeli-French director Ben Rafael brought Virgins to the UK Jewish Film Festival in 2018 and The End of Love is an engaging drama about immigration and the impact of technology on our lives.

This wild over-the-top tale about the unravelling of an Israeli-American couple’s dinner party stars none other than Shtisel’s Michael Aloni – which is all it will take to hook some viewers.

Michael Mayer, who also directed Aloni in his gay romance Out Of The Dark, teamed up with co-writer Guy Ayal for this story that is set in a fabulous Hollywood Hills mansion where a toxic mix of alcohol, egos, cultural differences, lust and greed derails the evening, and things spin out of control. The ironically named Happy Times won the script award at Haifa International’s Film Festival and received such rave reviews as: “Every butchered body and murder terrifies you, but also makes you laugh at the same time,” from Ha’aretz. So brace yourself for a meal of bloody mayhem with Aloni as the tempting side dish.

Brian Bloom (Anton Yelchin) is a young wannabe writer with a wall of rejection letters and a father (Frank Langella) who wants him to go to law school. It’s worth mentioning that his mum is played by Glenn Close, but more interesting that his search for life experiences to fuel his fiction results in him meeting Arielle (Bérénice Marlohe). This gorgeous French older woman is keen to hook up again, but only between the hours of the film’s title as she is married. 5-7 is happy hour code in France and, as Arielle’s husband has a lover, why shouldn’t she? Victor Levin’s romantic comedy melds New York sassy with French je ne sais quoi in a charming take of saucy cultural exchange.

As the unconventional romantic lead, Yelchin is endearing, which makes the death of the 27-year-old Soviet-born Jewish actor in 2016 even more tragic.

BLUMENTHAL

9 November, 7.30pm

The eponymous hero of the film is dead at the beginning, but as he died laughing at one of his own jokes, it could only be a Jewish comedy. No one seems particularly upset by the passing of Harold Blumenthal (Brian Cox), but it does push his brother Saul (Mark Blum) to ask his son Ethan (Seth Fisher) to retrieve one of Harold’s lifetime achievement awards from his agent Jimmy (Fred Melamed), which opens a can of worms. This is Seth Fisher’s first film and he has obviously taken a note from Woody Allen’s playbook by writing, acting and directing a bunch of characters who pick each other apart with feisty comebacks over an historic family feud.

HONEYMOOD

19 November, 7.30pm (followed by an interview with director Talya Lavie) When bride (Avigail Harari) discovers her groom (Ron Danker) has received a ring as a wedding gift from an ex-girlfriend, a fight breaks out in their honeymoon suite. At the bride’s insistence, the ring must be returned and the couple’s wedding night turns into a trek through Jerusalem as they are forced to confront past lovers, repressed doubts, and the lives they’ve chosen to leave behind.

This stirring romantic comedy is directed by Talya Lavie, who won the Tribeca Film Festival Founder’s Award and Nora Ephron Prize for her feature debut, Zero Motivation, which broke the Israeli box office record of the past two decades. A film about national socialism, antisemitism and forced exile that appeals to all the family is one to treasure, and German director Caroline Link has made Matthew Kneale’s adaptation of his mother’s book warm and heart- rendering.

Judith Kerr’s bunny is a literary metaphor for the loss of home and childhood – and as heroine Anna Kemper, 12-year-old Riva Krymalowski beautifully conveys the agony and confusion. Told from a child’s perspective, the impending danger of Hitler and this Jewish family is shown through the school games of his Nazi youth recruits and hushed conversations between parents Dorothea (Carla Juri) and Arthur (Oliver Masucci), a journalist on the Fuhrer’s hitlist. Link’s picture perfect Swiss locations deflect from the Kempers’ stressful journey to safety, but French antisemitism reminds us of the hatred. Interestingly the first film of Kerr’s book was made in Germany in 1978, but Link’s version is compulsory viewing.

It took 48 years, but Judith Kerr has finally given us another rabbit – and it isn’t pink. The Curse of the School Rabbit is Judith’s first encounter with a herbivore since her semi-autobiographical When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit was published in 1971. There were many books in between, with The Tiger Who Came To Tea beloved by each new generation, but the latest arrival, which would have coincided with the late author’s 96th birthday, is an exquisitely illustrated picture book about a boy, a rabbit, and a lot of bad luck.

“I think there should be as few words in a picture book as possible,” said Judith, over coffee in the front room at her ivy-clad Victorian house in Barnes. Charming and blessed with energy that belied her years, Judith was nursing a nasty scratch courtesy of her cat Katinka, who has her own book Katinka’s Tail and it is the drawings that make the books so joyful. The former Central School of Art student left Berlin with her family when she was 12 as her father Alfred was an open critic of the Nazis. It is this part of her life that features in her trilogy, Out of the Hitler Time, of which Pink Rabbit is part, although Judith said: “I would never have written a novel if it hadn’t been about my family.” She credited her late husband, Thomas Nigel Kneale, creator of TV’s Quatermass for getting her through it. “I found the novel incredibly difficult and, after three or four chapters, was ready to give up. Tom said I shouldn’t and also gave me the title. Originally I hadn’t included pink rabbit, but he remembered it and said I should.”

Evidently, the rabbit Judith left behind was barely pink. “It was very faded,” she said. “I suppose it was like an old friend, but in the end I took another toy that was totally uninteresting.”

Judith admitted to being sentimental – “If not at the age of 95, when will I start?” she said, knowing soft toys trigger nostalgia. “Matthew had a monkey, which went everywhere with him,” she said of her firstborn, who wrote the film’s screenplay, but she could not recall the favourite toy of her artist/designer daughter, Tacy. “At first I had no idea what to do with my own children, as there had been no small children in my family. But I learnt it was easier to get kids to do things when you make them laugh.”

The synopsis on the back of Pink Rabbit begins with the line: ‘Suppose your country began to change’ and I asked Judith if she felt it reflected the rise of antisemitism in Britain. “I can’t recall who said it, but antisemitism is in the soil, it’s always been there, and I don’t know why, but I’ve never experienced it in this country.” The Tiger Who Came To Tea is a first reader for many young children and the cursed school rabbit could be a rival contender.

“Picture books are still popular and that gets them started, so I think they should be funny,” said Judith, who won the Oldie Tigress We’d Like To Have Tea award in January 2019. Having coffee with her was just as good.

BY RABBI BORUCH M BOUDILOVSKY As Abraham ascended the mountain on his frightening journey to the binding of Isaac, he learned that faith demands complete surrender and self-denial.

Service of God is not intended to benefit the worshipper. On the contrary, it can sometimes impose unimaginable suffering on all levels; physical, emotional and intellectual.

The model of faith that the Akedah [the binding] inspires is one used by human beings to be obedient, disciplined, and humble, rather than serve their own interests.

What did Abraham learn and understand at the peak of the mountain? As he descended, what did he now know that he did not know before?

Abraham learns that the same God who demands sacrifice, submission and surrender, also places restrictions upon them.

Life can never be taken or harmed in the service of God. Self-denial is a religious value only to the point that it doesn’t damage life itself.

The sacred value of life and the prohibition of murder in the service of God are established as a foundational principle in the Akedah for Abraham and his followers to learn and exemplify.

Righteousness, as shaped by the teachings of the Akedah and the Abrahamic faith, is a combination of submission to God and reverence to life. When one is prepared to submit to the perceived will of God by undermining the sanctity of life, one violates the teaching of the Akedah.

On the other hand, when the value of human life is appreciated while submission to God is forgotten, the legacy of the Akedah is abandoned.

The Akedah, when studied in its entirety, advances an exemplary model of faith in which God is served and life is sanctified.

This model does not justify violence as part of worship, but instead submission to noble activity.

While the parties dispute the outcome in real life, the scene begs the question of the permissibility of sting operations.

What does the Torah say about knowingly leading another to sin?

‘Miriam’s death led to a drought and worse’

BY RABBI ANNA POSNER “Miriam died and was buried. Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.”

(Numbers 20:1-2) In Numbers 20:1, we read that Miriam dies. Immediately afterwards, we are told the Israelites were now without water.

Rashi comments that the Israelites had a well through Miriam’s merit and therefore her death caused the Israelites to no longer have water.

The Israelites now needed to find water by different means, and so follows one of the Torah’s most wellknown stories, Moses trying to get water from the rock.

Here, in the same parsha, Moses hits the rock rather than talking to it as God had instructed, and so is punished by being told that he will not be able to enter Israel.

Shortly after the incident with the rock, Aaron also dies.

All in one parsha, we see the

death of Miriam, the death of Aaron and Moses being excluded from entering Israel. In this way, the Israelite people are left without the leaders who have carried them through from slavery to freedom to their development as a people and a nation.

Just two parashot beforehand, we read that no one over the age of 20 will be able to enter Israel and that the Israelites must wander the desert for 40 years so that a new generation, which has not known slavery, will be the one to enter.

Now the people must also learn to trust new leaders and gain their own independence.

This sequence of events, which began with Miriam’s death, teaches us that sometimes we need radical change to be pushed away from what we have always known and relied on in order to find independence and be truly free.

While MPs may have been divided over whether to support Marcus Rashford’s campaign to extend free school meals, in Jewish thought there is little ambiguity as to our obligation to support those who are hungry.

Perhaps this is unsurprising, given how frequently the question of food instability appears in the stories of Torah and indeed how prevalent a social issue it has been throughout the ages of human life.

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all moved lands because of food scarcity. Joseph rose to prominence in Egypt because of his economic planning enabling the population to avert disastrous food shortages.

The vulnerable Israelite population fleeing slavery in Egypt was kept alive by the essential supply of manna provided by God. Alongside these stories, which bring to life the potential impact of not having access to food, and the life-changing role played by a stable

food supply, are numerous laws and teachings that embed the duty to feed the hungry and to build systems into the economic and social structures of Jewish communities.

From Torah, which teaches that farmers must leave the corners of their fields un-ploughed, to Maimonides, who details laws of community building that establish food collectors and a process of distribution to the needy, layers of Jewish teaching emphasise the prime importance of ensuring those who may be hungry do not go without.

Within a few days of the news, posts appeared online ranging from

synagogues offering Jewish children on free school meals a kosher lunch throughout half-term to delis and cafes providing meals even in this time when business is so hard.

When you walk through the old Jewish East End of London, you can still see the remnants of soup kitchens and social welfare organisations that were built little more than a century ago to provide a safety net for those in need.

The Jewish community has an amazing capacity to mobilise around this most important of issues, but as well as supporting the immediate need, true action in support of food justice requires engagement with wider questions of inequality, deprivation, and food poverty.
