Sacks ambulance appeal raises £35k in first week Community rallies behind Jewish News fundraiser A campaign by Jewish News and MDA UK to donate a life-saving vehicle for Israel in memory of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks has raised £35,000 in its first week, writes Adam Decker.

The target is £135,000, which will be spent on the first of a new batch of bloodmobiles to be used to transport teams to collect some of the 1,100 units each day that keep the country’s blood supply full.

It will be named after the former Chief Rabbi, who was in post was for 22 years until 2013. The bloodmobile will eventually be homed at the new British-funded Blood and Logistics Centre, due to open next year.

MDA UK described Lord Sacks, who died two weeks ago as a long-time “champion” of the charity and revealed £18,000 had already been pledged before the campaign was publicly launched.

Burger said: “Eighty percent of Israel’s blood supplies are collected remotely and the current fleet is up to 19 years old. Some are close to being beyond economic repair.

“In addition, as Israel’s population and tourist population grows, MDA needs to increase its blood inventory in line with this growth and therefore these new vehicles play an essential part in this growth.

“The immediate response to the bloodmobile campaign has been amazing. Your readers have donated £35,000 in less than a week, leaving £100,000 to go. I’m sure the community’s response across National Lifesaving Day will secure this much-needed vehicle for the people of Israel.”

Abraham Accords envoys share hopes of closer ties A remarkable picture of how the newly-signed Abraham Accords — between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel and Bahrain — are working in practice emerged at a ground-breaking webinar yesterday, convened by the Anglo-Israel Association, writes Jenni Frazer.

For the first time the ambassadors of the three countries in Britain, in a panel event moderated by Lord Finkelstein, spoke of their hopes for close co-operation and, in the pointed comments of both UAE Ambassador Mansoor Abulhoul and Bahraini Ambassador Sheikh Fawaz al-Khalifa, their wish

that the Accords should be “a warm peace”. An Israeli trade delegation was in Bahrain yesterday morning, and twiceweekly flights between the UAE and Israel start next week.

Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely said she wanted the Accords to “inspire” the countries with which Israel already had peace treaties, Egypt and Jordan. “We are not replacing our friends, we are extending the number,” she said.

Abulhoul said: “We don’t share borders with Israel and we haven’t had a conflict with it, so we start from a different position.”

about the opportunities in the context of the Accords – particularly in high-tech, tourism, trade, co-operation on dealing with Covid – they were more circumspect in discussing the prospects of peace between Israel and other countries.

Abulhoul addressed the issue of the Palestinians, saying: “Engagement with Israel allowed us to take the issue of [West Bank] annexation off the table. That preserved the two-state solution as a viable option.”

CHIEF WHIP TELLS CORBYN: APOLOGISE UNEQUIVOCALLY

Labour’s chief whip this week urged Jeremy Corbyn to “unequivocally, unambiguously and without reservation” apologise for claiming that the scale of antisemitism in the party was “dramatically overstated for political reasons”.

In a letter obtained by the PA news agency, Nick Brown said the former Labour leader’s response to a damning Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) report caused “distress and pain” to the Jewish community.

Corbyn was suspended from the party last month over his comments, but was reinstated by the National Executive Committee after a disciplinary panel meeting three weeks later.

Last week his successor as

party leader, Sir Keir Starmer, blocked him from sitting as a Labour MP, but said he would keep the decision not to restore the whip “under review”.

Brown, writing to Corbyn on Monday, said that to inform an investigation into whether

the Islington North MP broke the party’s code of conduct he wanted him to consider apologising for his comments.

He wrote: “Will you unequivocally, unambiguously and without reservation apologise for your comments?”

Shuls to reopen under new Covid restrictions Hopes are high that synagogues will remain open following the announcement that religious venues will be unaffected by even the strictest lockdown tiers when the new system kicks in on 3 December, writes Jack Mendel.

Cheering the government’s decision alongside Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis were the United Synagogue and the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations, which together represent more than 150 English synagogues and communities.

A spokesman for the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations said: “We are thankful to the government for allowing public worship to commence.

“As we stated in our recent letter to [communities secretary] Robert Jenrick, collective worship is pivotal to our way of life and religious existence.”

The United Synagogue said it was “delighted” with the news that services will be held once the lockdown lifts.

“We expect that services will resume following the same careful restrictions we have had in place for some months,” said communities

The government’s three-tiered winter strategy of local restrictions

are in, albeit on condition that worship is Covid-compliant.

Health minister Nadine Dorries urged caution, saying: “Confined spaces, multiple households, limited ventilation and people raising their voices are all known to be risk factors when spreading Covid-19.” Public Health England was researching links between public worship and outbreaks of the virus, she added.

Rabbi Mirvis said news of shuls reopening “will be widely welcomed by people of all faiths,” adding: “I am grateful to the government for their work with us on this issue.”

Liberal Judaism’s Rabbi Charley Baginsky said its communities would make their own arrangements depending on local tiers.

Organisers of a campus stem cell donor drive say Jewish students are “playing their part” to save lives in lockdown, writes Adam Decker.

Ambassadors of the Sue Harris Trust, which organised Hero Week across universities, said they were “busy recruiting Jewish students to our Swab Squad”.

Former Yavneh College student Shaina Lesser, one of the Swab Squad recruits,

donated her stem cells last month, which the trust described as “fantastic news”.

The trust has sought to raise awareness that more than 1,000 Jewish people with blood cancer around the world are in need of a donor from outside their family.

“Jewish donors are sought because tissue type – the key factor in matching an appropriate unrelated stem cell donor – is influenced by ethnic origin,” said organisers.

UK ends quarantine ruling on Israel Travellers arriving in England from Israel will not have to quarantine for 14 days from 4am on Saturday, the UK government has said.

The announcement, made by transport secretary Grant Shapps, sparked a rush for flights from Jewish families who have not seen each other for months.

Anger as Foreign Office separates Jerusalem The Board of Deputies has said Whitehall has made progress of sorts after its “absolutely inappropriate” separate listing of Israel and Jerusalem as places from which visitors to the UK will no longer need to quarantine due to the pandemic.

The original faux pas came in an announcement by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) regarding its update Covid-19 travel corridors.

Jerusalem was listed separately because it

includes East Jerusalem, which both Israelis and Palestinians claim, and whose status under international law remains that of an occupied territory.

However, the Board said it was “absolutely inappropriate to list ‘Jerusalem’ as a separate country”.

The next day Jerusalem was offered as a sub-section under the ‘Israel’ listing. The Board said: “While it won’t please everyone, it is certainly an improvement.”

Chai raises more than £3m in 36-hour appeal Chai Cancer Care has raised more than £3million since its fundraising appeal began on Sunday, doubling its initial target, writes Tali Fraser.

‘The Big Campaign’ fundraiser has received donations from more than 13,000 people to date, while a group of sponsors agreed to match all of the early donations made within the first 36 hours.

Chai’s operating costs are £3.5m a year, so the charity has asked people not to stop donating but to continue giving whatever they can, as “every gift now makes a big difference”.

The charity, which supports more than 3,600 clients, has seen its

income drop by 40 percent because of postponed and cancelled events and fundraising.

It said: “The enormity of Covid-19 on cancer patients and their loved ones is undeniable. A direct consequence of the pandemic has meant that people are being diagnosed later, sadly resulting in the need for more invasive radical surgery and treatment.

“It has been widely reported that cancer has become ‘the forgotten C’ as critical cancer services have been downgraded due to rising virus cases in our hospitals.

“On a daily basis, we are seeing

the impact and anxiety this is having on our clients, both physically and emotionally. With the need for social

distancing, not being able to see family members and loved ones is an added and significant pressure

for so many.”

Chai is continuing to provide its specialised support services virtually and over the phone and says the demand for counselling has increased 37 percent during the pandemic.

“The demand for Chai’s services has always been great, but now it is urgently needed more than ever,” the charity said.

Thirty years ago, The Big C was barely ever called by its full name, but that narrative changed when my mother Frances Winegarten, together with Susan Shipman, turned their personal experiences of cancer and founded Chai Cancer Care.

Earlier diagnosis and medical advances over the past three decades have meant those touched by cancer are now thankfully more likely to be living for longer,

albeit with physical and emotional challenges. So the demand for Chai’s specialised services was increasing. In fact, 12 months ago, we were planning a further expansion at our flagship Hendon centre ... and then Covid happened.

Cancer became ‘The Forgotten C’, as surgeries and treatments were put on hold and screening and diagnoses delayed.

Chai’s income dropped by 40 percent as fundraising activities were cancelled.

Meanwhile, demand for our services was going up. The gap was widening and with no possibility of an annual dinner to fill the

hole, we needed to find an effective alternative and chose to reach out to the community through a crowdfunding platform – ‘The Big Campaign’.

We had no idea what the response would be. But, over 36 hours, we saw the true democratisation of giving. The whole community put their hand in their collective pockets and supported Chai in a way that has never been done before – raising the outstanding total of more than £3 million. At Chai, there is no ‘Forgotten C’.

And now we can be sure Chai will continue to be there with its ‘Big C of Care’.

Chief’s ‘alarm’ at Jew-hating plotter jailed Muslim prejudice Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has told an online debate that levels of Muslim antisemitism in the UK are “alarming”.

He was speaking at an event about Israel’s recent normalisation agreements with Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

Also taking part were the UK’s former Middle East minister Alistair Burt, the UAE’s international cooperation minister Reem Ebrahim Al-Hashimy and former UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon.

Rabbi Mirvis said the Abraham Accords, signed with Israel in September, were among the most momentous moments of his life, and reflected on how Jewish-Muslim relations on a personal level can be influenced by IsraeliArab relations at a national level.

Citing studies by the Community Security Trust, and the Institute for Jewish Policy Research, he said that British Muslims were up to four times more likely to be antisemitic than non-Muslims.

The Chief Rabbi also referenced work by the Henry Jackson Society, adding that 44 percent of Muslims embrace antisemitic conspiracy theories.

“This is an alarming rate, it’s nearly half of the Muslims in the UK,” he said.

A former carpet fitter who threatened a synagogue and made a video inciting a terrorist attack on the Royal Festival Hall has been jailed for eight and a half years.

Shehroz Iqbal (right), 29, posted the mobile phone footage to his friends in March with the words “Attack, attack”.

Iqbal, of Ilford, east London, had denied using WhatsApp to encourage terrorism

and using Facebook to spread Islamic State propaganda but was convicted after a trial at the Old Bailey.

The court heard the posts had been uncovered when Iqbal was pulled over later that month for possession of drugs.

Prosecutor Kate Wilkinson said he was “volatile and prone to act on his extremism”.

At his sentencing on Friday, the court heard that at the time

of the offences he had been subject to two suspended sentences for harassing members of a synagogue in Gants Hill.

He had put up posters with the words “Jewish sc*m” and “stop the Gaza bombings”, and later sent the shul a threatening email when a picture of him was posted on its website.

Jailing him for six years with a threeyear extended licence,

Judge Philip Katz said: “You have a long history of unpleasant, antisemitic threats and harassment.” He gave him a 30-month term for conspiracy to supply class A drugs and possession.

ASSESSMENT STAGE ROUND ONE: CAMPAIGN VIDEOS Anthony wins a point for calling Birmingham “sunny” in his campaign video but loses it for hand gestures that look like he’s telling off his dog. Jodie wins a point for conducting her video in a storm, but loses it for the garish background and another for saying JSocs don’t “feel Jewish”. Nina loses three points for making dogs howl with her singing. A fourth point is deducted when her mates make matters worse. A fifth and sixth go when she says she’s “running for president” on a treadmill, but she regains a point for wearing long sleeves and another for a karate kick, so ends up with -4. Miles wins a point for the human intestines sketch behind him, but loses 10 for being serious and not leaving the house. Come on, Miles, we’re supposed to be loud and proud!

ROUND TWO: JEWISHNESS Jodie says being Jewish is about “food, friends and festivals”, losing her a point for the persistent use of f-words. She adds that “on a deeper level, it is my way of life and something which I am proud of”, landing her a formal warning for having any kind of depth whatsoever. Miles says it “means anything from family, friends and culture through shul, chicken soup and JSoc all the way to bagels, Purim and Seinfeld,” adding: “It means everything to me.” So, that’s -5 for putting all his eggs in the Jewish basket, but a point each for chicken soup, bagels and Seinfeld. Anthony gets a point for chicken soup and one for Woody Allen, but these days a point is also deducted for Woody Allen. He loses another three for quoting Ed Miliband, whose criticism of Israel we suspect he shares. For Nina, being Jewish is “standing in the Jew corner of Crisis in Nottingham and feeling right at home as you bump into everyone you went to school with”.

Four points for candour, one for altruism.

ROUND THREE: CHUTZPAH Anthony ran through a field of wheat, which we assume was not in Birmingham, and stood for UJS president when he said he wouldn’t, the #UtterScoundrel. Jodie needs some chutz-umph too, saying the worst she’s done is not tell her grandparents about her online campaign on Facebook, when everyone knows grandparents are so over “soshing”. Nina “haggled with a seller in the shuk and got 80 percent off” and “downed a bottle of wine in a park to win a free T-shirt”. This prompts a point

avalanche and a hastily scribbled office memo that, if elected UJS president, she could bring the entire edifice crashing down. Miles claws back many of his lost points by having played NWA’s Straight Outta Compton while DJing at a charity gig. The old folks’ home has said it’ll be inviting an alternative performer next year.

ROUND FOUR: WHOLENESS Yes, we know it’s not really a category, but wordcounts and all… If Miles wins he says he’d “probably fall off my chair and try to collect myself for a good moment or so” before “returning from this haze” and tucking into the kugel his rabbi’s wife makes, which is whole enough for most parents. The Bristolian wild child likes Israel because you can “go to Shalvata and know that you could marry everyone you meet”, which sounds both whole and supremely arrogant.

She says she’ll celebrate by sleeping. Anthony will celebrate with a fair few single malts, followed by a few more, followed by “a ridiculous amount of paprika” in his mum’s Moroccan soup, which makes him whole every time he has it, while optimist Jodie says she’ll be having three bottles of wine whatever the outcome. That’s our kind of president.

CONCLUSION Nina from Bristol says the one thing she’d change as UJS president is her tax bracket, which gives insight into how she’d fly the UJS plane once in the cockpit.

Anthony loves how nervous his dad gets dealing with Ben-Gurion security, hates that Israelis don’t queue, and tells Jewish News about a cracking deal on Glenlivet whisky, all of which should easily win him this contest, but then he goes and spoils it all by talking about himself in the third person – “that it should disturb Anthony Bolchover as he answers these questions…” Then there’s Miles. He says the worst thing about Israel is “the uncertainty and instability in the region”, by which he means “Israel’s neighbours”, and from his video we suspect his flatmates think the worst thing about their apartment is the “uncertainty and instability” from his room, given he likes watching Talking Heads’ 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, possibly repeatedly, possibly at loudish volumes, but we could be wrong. All of which leaves Jodie Franks, the future, in part for her answer to the question: ‘What would you say to Jeremy Corbyn if you got in an elevator with him?’ While the others ranted and raved, Jodie replied: “I’d take the stairs.”

Wembley United buys ‘more suitable’ building Wembley United Synagogue is set to vacate its building after more than 60 years as it confirmed the purchase of a new property, writes Jack Mendel.

The community, established 92 years ago, confirmed plans to move, with its financial representative having delivered the “very good news” to members earlier in November.

The shul’s “best option”, as outlined in its annual report, included selling “the entire synagogue site”

Bevis Marks in new Crohn’s daughters bow out development fight Bevis Marks is back in battle with developers seeking to build a 21-storey building just three metres from the historic City shul, writes Adam Decker.

The chairman of the grade I-listed shul, built in the 18th century and still in use today, has asked for help lodging objections to a proposed tower on the east side, which would affect both light and prayer.

In January 2019 developers submitted plans for a new building at 33 Creechurch Lane which appeared to have been defeated. The developers this month sent in slightly altered plans, and those opposed to them have two weeks to register their objection.

In a video to congregants, Bevis Marks’ Rabbi Shalom Morris said the tower would “limit ambient light coming inside and really putting us into more darkness, making it more difficult to pray and enjoy the beautiful space”.

Israeli cancer scientists claim genetic editing breakthrough Israeli scientists have claimed a breakthrough in the fight against cancer after using Nobel Prizewinning technology to destroy cancerous cells in mice, leaving everything around them intact, writes Tali Fraser.

In what researchers have hailed a world first, the study from Tel Aviv University suggests that the CRISPRCas9 gene editing system, which allows scientists to make precise alterations to DNA, can be used like “tiny scissors” to target and treat cancer in animals.

The technology, which gained its creators the Nobel Prize in chemistry this year, was examined by cancer expert Professor Dan Peer, who said that there are “no side-effects” from the process.

“This technology can extend the life expectancy of cancer patients and we hope, one day, cure the disease”, Peer said after his

peer-reviewed research was published in the Science Advances journal.

“If we can use this technology, then within three treatments we can destroy a tumour. This technology can physically cut the DNA in cancerous cells, and those cells will not survive.”

Peer told Times of Israel that there are hopes the process will eventually replace

chemotherapy – a technique that, unlike the process used in the Tel Aviv study, is administered to the whole body.

His research involved hundreds of mice with two of the most aggressive types of cancer – glioblastoma, a brain cancer, and metastatic ovarian cancer.

The mice that received treatment were found to have double the life expectancy

of the control group, with a 30 percent higher survival rate for glioblastoma and an 80 percent higher survival rate for metastatic ovarian cancer.

Peer said his team plan to develop the treatment for all cancers and that the technique could be ready to use on humans within two years.

Treatment would be personalised to each patient based on a biopsy, which would determine whether they received a general injection or an injection directly into the tumour.“It will probably take some time before the new treatment can be used in humans, but we are optimistic,” Peer said.

“When we first spoke of treatments with mRNA 12 years ago, people thought it was science fiction.

“I believe that in the near future, we will see many personalised treatments based on genetic messengers – for both cancer and genetic diseases.”

Trans Shabbat event A group of cross-denominational transgender Jews have led a Friday night Shabbat service to mark Trans Day of Remembrance, the first event of its kind to take place in a British synagogue.

by Jews who identify as transgender – meaning their gender does not align with the sex they were assigned at birth – commemorated trans victims of murder and reflected on the resilience of transg people in the face of trauma.

Service leader Luke Levine said: “When I came out at 17, I didn’t know how being transgender would affect my relationship with Judaism.

Clean growth project A million dollar fund for UK-Israel collaborations over clean growth initiatives has been launched by the Wohl Legacy, a charity supporting sustainable change.

The Wohl Clean Growth Alliance, which is set to last at least three years, is launching with a call for proposals in areas linked to food, water and energy, with grants

Mum faked cancer to con victims out of £45k A Jewish mother who raked in more than £45,000 through a GoFundMe page by pretending to have cancer has been found guilty of fraud.

Former JFS pupil Nicole Elkabbas (pictured) scammed well-wishers out of tens of thousands of pounds, which she spent on shopping trips and an executive box at Tottenham Hotspur, jurors at her trial heard.

She even used a picture of herself lying in a hospital bed in a “scheme designed to trick and to con” and spoke about her ovarian cancer diagnosis, subsequent surgery and round after round of gruelling chemotherapy in what prosecutors said were “detailed lies”.

Following a trial, Elkabbas, 42, of Edge End Road in Broadstairs, Kent, was found guilty by majority verdict of fraud by false representation and possession of criminal property at Canterbury Crown Court last Friday.

She had denied the offences and her defence had argued that

she believed she had cancer.

The court heard that the GoFundMe page garnered more than £45,000 in donations from more than 600 people. But the prosecution said the money was used to fund shopping excursions, trips to Barcelona and Rome, gambling, as well as a box at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

Prosecutor Ben Irwin called her actions “dishonest”, adding: “It was a scheme designed to trick and to con and she knew it,” he said. “So she lied about the major surgery, lied about six cycles of

chemotherapy, lied about this wonder-drug. She tricked people who gave her money and she frittered it away.”

Oliver Kirk, defending, told jurors Elkabbas is a “vulnerable” woman who has a genetic predisposition to ovarian cancer and has had cancer in her family.

He said it was the defence’s case Elkabbas was told and genuinely believed she had cancer.

A GoFundMe spokesperson said: “All donations were refunded last year when the misuse allegations were raised.”

Katie Taylor of The Latte Lounge, a Facebook group and website for women over 40, which Elkabbas used to dupe others into donating, wrote in a blog post: “I had spent two and a half years building up the reputation of this platform helping women on a daily basis with all their problems.

“Running such a large online community, people come to trust you and, through no fault of my own, I felt I had let them down.”

Sainsbury’s honours Norwood resident A Jewish man with learning difficulties and autism has been given a special presentation by Sainsbury’s in recognition of 40 years of loyal service.

Jonathan Black, 58, who has lived in Norwood homes for most of that time, has collected trolleys and baskets at the Sainsbury’s in Muswell Hill since 1980, when he joined at the age of 18.

Covid-19 restrictions meant the award ceremony last Friday was much reduced in scale from the one the supermarket threw to mark Jonathan’s 25 years’ service, but it left his proud mother Audrey beaming.

“He’s had several home moves and now lives in East Barnet, so the commute is a long and complicated one, but he still goes to work every day without fail,” she said.

“He is always on time, hardly ever absent and worked all through lockdown.”

“He’s very conscientious, hard-working and loyal to Sainsbury’s,” added Audrey.

“When he left school, his headmaster said he would never be socially accepted and would never get a job. Well, Jonathan proved him wrong then, and 40 years on he is still proving him wrong. I’m very, very proud of him.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flew to Saudi Arabia for a late night rendezvous with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the northern city of Neom, journalists tracking flight data say, writes Stephen Oryszczuk.

His private plane, which stayed on the ground in the desert kingdom’s remote north-west for two hours, is the same one Netanyahu used for covert trips to Russia, according to Ha’aretz.

Netanyahu reportedly met the de facto Saudi leader with Mossad chief Yossi Cohen, but without the knowledge of Israel’s defence or foreign ministers.

It comes at an especially sensitive time for the region, after Donald Trump’s administration was voted out earlier this month.

US support is considered necessary for any Israeli strike against Iran.

The New York Times reported that Trump last week sounded out his generals on a possible Iran strike in the dying days of his presidency, before Joe Biden gets sworn in. He is reported to have been talked out of it.

Israel and Saudi Arabia are both opposed to the nuclear deal negotiated between Iran, the US, the UK, Russia, China, France, and

Germany in 2015. It required Iran to dismantle its atomic infrastructure and give international inspectors access to its sites in return for sanctions relief. Trump withdrew the US in 2018.

Inaugural virtual Euro summit The inaugural three-day e-Summit of Jewish leaders across Europe took place this week as digital connections were made across the continent.

Executives and activists including presidents, board members, volun-

Cultural and sporting association representatives mixed with those

from Jewish museums, grassroots groups and innovative ventures, as delegates worked through common problems and possible solutions.

Common Destiny, and Jewish cultural hub JW3, with organisers describing the e-Summit as “a space to discover how many communities used this challenge as an opportunity to change direction, pivot and grow”.

Chai shows what can be achieved in a crisis Charities have been on the frontline of responding to the pandemic. They’ve also been among the worst hit, with essential sources of fundraising turned off overnight because of the need for social distancing.

This week Chai Cancer Care, a medium-sized communal charity whose income has dropped by 40 percent, achieved something remarkable. Turning a crisis into an opportunity, it raised more than £3 million in just 36 hours to fund its life-saving services.

At its peak, the fundraiser received 35 donations a minute. In all some 13,000 people pledged to help the organisation cover the majority of its £3.5 million annual operating costs.

Chai is one of the community’s most crucial good causes, supporting more than 3,600 people, many of whom are vulnerable youngsters and their families.

The response to its appeal this week shows it is possible not just to keep going at a time of crisis, but to grow. Mazeltov to a magnificent charity for rewriting the rules of fundraising.

Correct rule for shuls Sense finally prevailed this week with the government announcing it will allow synagogues and other places of worship to reopen when the second national lockdown ends next week. Shuls went to enormous lengths after the first lockdown, working closely with local government to ensure they were safe spaces for congregants. It’s wonderful that they are to reopen, but they should never have been forced to close in the first place.

Fine intention, bad location I was shocked to read that a Holocaust Museum has opened an exhibition about the death of George Floyd. Mr Floyd had no connection to the Shoah so why is the Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center in Florida memorialising him?

The exhibit does not belong alongside exhibits of Jews murdered in the Holocaust. It is a disgrace to my family members who died at the hands of the Nazis.

The museum’s decision will alienate and upset many Jewish communities across the world.

Of course, no one in their right mind could possibly approve of police abuse and the awful manner in which he was killed. However, to pay tribute to Mr Floyd alongside the blessed memories of victims of the Holocaust is beyond offensive.

As the son of survivors, I find this upsetting on a personal level.

The museum’s assistant director, Lisa Bachman, appears to have got this one terribly wrong.

Whoever came up with this idea needs to reevaluate their thought processes.

Nobody in big business should get an easy ride ALEX BRUMMER

A

s a veteran writer on City battles and turpitude, one becomes inured to pushback from chairmen and chief executives.

Most are so used to almost unfettered authority in their own realm that they don’t take to challenge kindly.

There are those who hold irreparable grudges and will barely speak to you after you have lined up against them in, for instance, a corporate bid. There are the more thoughtful figures, such as Sir Donald Brydon, former chairman of the London Stock Exchange (LSE), who now chairs the Sage software group among other things.

Brydon, who has Jewish grandchildren, was able to brush aside some robust writing when The Daily Mail fiercely opposed the takeover of the LSE by Frankfurt-based Deutsche Borse. He has subsequently taken an interest in the work of the Abraham Initi-

atives (which I chair) and made a generous donation at the time of our last dinner, even though he was unable to attend.

There is one chief executive, who has headed at least three major City firms, who was so upset about a particular photo frequently used in The Daily Mail that he rang in tears begging we don’t use it again.

Another successful Jewish retail entrepreneur and chief executive was so perturbed by a risqué photograph of his new woman friend, used at the front end of the paper, that he managed to persuade an editor that it should never be printed under any circumstances.

Then there is the special case of Sir Philip Green of Arcadia. He cuts

a controversial figure. He has captured more than his fair share of headlines for activities ranging from the sale of BHS to the tax exile of his family fortune and revelations of nondisclosure agreements with former staff.

Among Green’s endearing qualities is that, unlike many of his counterparts, he does not generally hide behind a phalanx of lawyers and public relations executives, but prefers to vent his dissatisfaction in person.

There can be few editors, managing editors, City editors or retail writers who down the decades have not experienced his sometimes salty, hairdryer treatment down the telephone.

and within the hour is back on the phone suggesting a cup of tea to discuss future plans.

He can also be generous to a fault.

In the wake of the terrible Pacific tsunami in 2014 The Daily Mail launched an appeal, funds that would eventually be used to build schools in affected areas. I called Green for support and caught him strolling along the beach in Barbados. He volunteered £10,000 on the spot. I said it wasn’t enough and he immediately doubled his contribution.

He is also known to have stepped in with far bigger sums, reputedly in the millions, to help Jewish Care cover its deficits.

All that is well and good, but he and his businesses must still be scrutinised.

In the past week, when writing about the role of independent directors, I mentioned that you could decorate the boardroom with senior judicial figures and prominent business people.

Refugee children like me must get second chance LORD DUBS

It is shocking that in 2016, Europol estimated that more than 10,000 refugee children had gone missing since arriving in Europe over a two-year period. Refugee children face dangers every day. In Greece for example, there are reports of children dying in camps. Some die on the journey there: only the other week, a child drowned off the coast of Samos.

But there are also vulnerable children closer to home, risking their lives to cross the Channel in unfit dinghies and boats. Over the past 20 years, almost 300 people, including 36 children have drowned trying to reach family or safety in the UK. Despite these deaths, the Home Office continues to push to criminalise refugees.

Home Secretary Priti Patel has stated her desire to make Channel crossings “completely unviable”, ramping up the kind of rhetoric that has led 46 percent of Britons to believe that, in comparison with other EU countries, the UK has taken in “more than its fair share” of refugees. It’s not true. We take in fewer refugees than many of our European partners. And the

recall the day my mother put me on a train at Prague station. The train in which I rode all the way to London to meet my father was one of eight that left the city between then and the outbreak of war. I have no doubt that I would have died had I stayed in Czechoslovakia: all the other Jews we knew went to concentration camps. So I owe my life to Sir Nicholas Winton, whose Kindertransport operation remains one of the great examples of British and humanitarian statecraft.

Today, there are other refugee children in Europe who need our help. There are around 4,253 unaccompanied child refugees on the Greek mainland and its islands. However, there are only 1,873 places available in long-term accommodation. More than 1,000 unaccompanied children in Greece are living in “insecure housing conditions”, typically meaning they are homeless, experiencing the daily risk of exploi-

THE SHUTTING OF LEGAL ROUTES PUSHES REFUGEES TO TAKE MORE DANGEROUS JOURNEYS refugee resettlement programme, ostensibly suspended following the outbreak of Covid-19, has yet to resume.

The shutting down of these safe and legal routes only pushes refugees to take ever-more dangerous journeys. I had hoped last month that these tragic recent deaths might give the Commons reason to rethink the government’s strategy and back my amendment to the Immigration Bill, allowing unaccompanied child refugees to be reunited with close relatives in the UK. Many of those trying to reach our shores – and there are far fewer trying to reach the UK than France or Germany – are doing so because they have family here.

That amendment may have been voted

down. But it is my view that so long as there are vulnerable children trying to reach the UK to be with their loved ones, we will have a responsibility to protect them. The UK must draw on its long-standing values of compassion and leadership, as it did during the Kindertransport programme, and reintroduce a resettlement programme for unaccompanied children.

Local authorities – on the coal face of the refugee crisis – are willing to welcome more unaccompanied children. Over 24 councils have agreed to house some 1,440 child refugees, so long as the government supports them.

I was one of 10,000 children given a second chance in the UK. Some of my fellow Kinder went on to become Nobel Prize-winners, entrepreneurs, poets, architects, chemists, but the majority wanted nothing more than safe and decent lives free from danger.

As a nation, we have a proud history of compassion and respect for human rights. As Europe grapples with the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War, it is right we once again show the kind of compassion I and so many others were shown.

Trump White House was not 'good for the Jews' HANNAH WEISFELD DIRECTOR, YACHAD

T

he term ‘slash and burn’ seems like the most accurate description of the purpose and impact of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Israel last week.

Not satisfied with Donald Trump’s all-out four-year assault on the norms of engaging in Israel-Palestine, Pompeo’s last hurrah sought to burn all that remains of the ever-weakening Green Line, the border between Israel and the West Bank.

His pièce de résistance was a visit to a West Bank settlement and the Golan Heights, and his policy announcement that all goods made in the settlements must now be labelled as ‘Made in Israel’ if they are to enter the US market.

Some people define what is “good for the Jews” as being whatever is good for the current Israeli administration’s far right-wing brand of Zionism. For them, this was a very good day for the Jews. But most know that the Trump White House – and all it has encouraged – have not

been in the least bit “good for the Jews”. In fact, this presidency and its senior team have borne all the hallmarks of the opposite.

We have seen a massive uptick in antisemitic attacks in the US, and a president who defends as “very fine people” the assortment of white supremacists who marched through Charlottesville chanting “Jews will not replace us”.

It is no surprise that Jews voted overwhelmingly to kick him out of power this month.

So, what was Pompeo hoping to achieve?

Ultimately, it was an attempt to shut down criticism – not of Israel, but its policy of occupation.

While visiting the occupied Palestinian territories, his State Department labelled boycott of “territory controlled by Israel” – a catch-all phrase to include boycotts against settlements – as discriminatory, and therefore antisemitic.

True, there are unsavoury antisemitic elements within the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement, as there can be within the pro-Palestinian support base on the hard-left, but that is not what this is about, and Pompeo’s attempt to stifle debate must be understood for what it is.

This is about labelling as “antisemitic” anyone who questions the policies of the Israeli government, calls themself an anti-Zionist (as painful and difficult as that might be for many in the Jewish community), and/or supports a boycott.

Among those most likely to be in this camp are Palestinians themselves, and by doing as he has, Pompeo has made it much harder for an incoming Biden administration to re-establish any old norms of engagement with the Palestinian side, which can only be a blow to peace.

The great irony in all this is that Pompeo and BDS share the goal of eradicating the

Green Line. It is just that BDSers seek one (non-Jewish) state, while Pompeo et al seek one (non-democratic) state in which the Jewish majority rules in perpetuity over another people while denying them their basic rights.

Pompeo’s last dance has nothing to do with supporting Israel or fighting antisemitism.

Anyone with half an eye on the conflict knows there is nothing beneficial about entrenching occupation and settlements (which must end for the conflict to be resolved) or casting one side in such a bad light that even engaging with them becomes morally reprehensible.

The leadership of the settler movement may have thought all their chickens came home to roost last week but, for Pompeo, they are simply a useful tool in his box as he shores up support for a 2024 presidential run.

It is therefore incumbent upon all of us who care about Israel and its future, and the interests of the Jewish people, to reject Pompeo’s crude yet very dangerous attempt to eradicate the Green Line and shut down debate.

We need to call out his actions for the narcissistic opportunism they are.

Cemeteries across the Arab world have been built over, or lie neglected or desecrated, as the memory of 2,000 years of Jewish life in Arab countries fades away. Except in Morocco, Jews are unable to access the graves of their ancestors and relatives.

That’s why, for the third year, a mass Kaddish is being planned all over the free world to enable Jews to say prayers for loved ones in inaccessible cemeteries.

When the project began, 19 synagogues took part. This year, more than 2,000 communities, organisations and individuals have lent their support to the initiative, including the Board of Deputies. A special prayer has been composed for the occasion by senior rabbi of the UK Sephardi community, Rabbi Joseph Dweck.

The mass Kaddish is being planned for

28 November, being the Shabbat nearest to 30 November, the official day designated by the Israeli Knesset to commemorate the exodus of 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries in the second half of the 20th century.

The Kaddish grew out of one man’s initiative to clean his grandfather’s grave in the new Jewish cemetery in Baghdad. Inspired by Miss Iraq posing for a selfie with Miss Israel in 2017, a Canadian of Iraqi origin, Sass Peress, engaged two Iraqi Muslims to help him. He directed operations remotely from his home in Montreal. The cemetery was in a state of disrepair. Saddam Hussein had planted grenades on some of the gravestones.

Before long, the clean-up operation had been extended to 150 graves. Peress hopes that eventually all 3,000 graves will be photographed and digitally catalogued.

The clean-up had to be conducted in the utmost secrecy in case of official interference.

"While some Iraqi Muslims stepped up and saw the positive, some tried to get in the way to the point of threats against the lives of those who sought to help me”, says Peress.

The old Baghdad Jewish cemetery, including the mass grave of the victims of the 1941 Farhud massacre, was demolished in 1958 to make way for a highway. The community managed to exhume and re-inter some dignitaries and

Making a splash at 80!

Naomi Price speaks to ‘Irv the Swerve’, otherwise known as Irving Stone, Britain’s oldest high-performance water-skier

O

n my way to meet octogenarian Irving Stone – Britain’s oldest highperformance waterskier – I started to wonder just how I was going to recognise him.

“Perhaps I should get a Magen David embroidered on my wet suit and turn up in that,” was his droll response, referencing 1930s champion boxer Jack ‘Kid’ Berg, who famously wore the symbol on his shorts.

As it turns out, the sun is in my eyes as he approaches to greet me. In the poor background light, I look past the silhouette of a youngish man with a light step wearing a bomber jacket, jeans and jodhpur boots, accompanied by an elegant blonde and a young brunette – only to discover that this is Stone himself, alongside his wife, Laurence, and their 21-year-old daughter, Lou. ‘Irv the Swerve’ Stone has earned his nickname for his athletic dynamism in slaloming across the wake of the water ski boat on one ski, perfectly poised at the end of a short rope at exhilarating competition speed.

The north Londoner held the British Over-55s national record for slalom skiing in 1998, breaking it by two buoys. Stone still skis at pro level.

According to his coach, Damien Ackerer, who has skied for France: “Irving can run rings round most talented 21-year-olds.”

To celebrate his 80th birthday in July, he spent the day at his club in Cambridgeshire: he and the engine firing on all cylinders.

How does he do it? Educated at Clifton College, at the entirely Jewish Polack’s House, founded in 1878, he was sports-minded from an early age.

“I wasn’t particularly bright,” says the highpowered property specialist in a top firm of city solicitors – and the essence of British-Jewish self-deprecation.

He still relishes the back-handed compliment

served to him by his housemaster: “Stone has achieved a satisfactory ‘A’ level result in the teeth of adverse criticism, but he does play some rather vigorous rugger.”

Stone went on to a career of vigorous litigation, qualifying with Nabarro Nathanson in 1964, a firm with old-fashioned values.

So, when was the last time you saw a Jew order turkey?

Comedian Jackie Mason shares his thoughts on the Covid crisis and his delight – or rather his disdain – for the seasonal dish

S

o, as I’m writing this, Biden has apparently won the election (maaaayybe), but one thing I’m sure about is that Covid is driving Jews crazy. First they start with don’t wear a mask, then they say wear the mask (when they said don’t wear the mask they were worried there wouldn’t be enough masks for doctors). Wear the mask outside, but don’t wear the mask inside, unless you’re in a tight spot with 10 people, then you should wear the mask, but only within six feet. If it’s 12 feet, you don’t have to wear the mask, and suddenly everyone is a carpenter walking around with a tape measure.

You even have to wear the mask in your own house, but you can take it off when you’re ready to start eating. See, but if Jews are not in the middle of eating, they are always looking for something to eat, or are about to eat, so they end up wearing masks less than anybody.

But, watch out, I heard reports of Jews being so hungry that they end up eating the masks too. Now that’s an idea, a line of edible masks, or even better, a mask that you can keep on while eating.

Maybe a small slit in the mask, or a window. This idea is worth billions. Billions, I tell you. One second, I have to go call my patent lawyer.

Eating, the only real subject a Jew could focus his attention on, and that brings me to, you got it, restaurants. So you walk into the restaurant, and first they take your temperature. I usually start rolling up my sleeve expecting them to take my blood pressure too, but no, this time there’s just a thermometer.

Thank God they have the electronic ones that they point at your forehead, and don’t put it in your mouth or, God forbid, anywhere else. Then you walk in, and you’re wearing the mask while walking for 10 seconds while you get to your seat.

Then you take off the mask when you sit down.

So the virus only gets transmitted when you’re walking but not sitting. You see how the whole thing doesn’t make any sense.

And they are just making Jews go meshugah.

I personally believe it’s a conspiracy to prevent Jews from ever leaving the house so

that they can’t make a living.

With all that said, what do we have to look forward to but Thanksgiving? This year will probably be easier than most years because they want you to stay away from anybody other than immediate family.

Be honest, most people don’t want to be with their extended family anyway, so Covid is a blessing in disguise for them. That is, of course, if you’re not quarantined with them.

In that case, I’ll just say good luck to you.

In every family, there’s always an aunt or uncle that nobody can stand and everyone dreads seeing them.

They are always complaining; this dish is too salty, or not salty enough. Last time she ate her sister-in-law’s cooking she was sick for three days.

Then you always have an uncle who

doesn’t make as much as the host. So Covid has its perks, you know?

But really, aside from the family members whom you don’t really want to see, there is the issue of turkey. One of the great questions is who in their right mind wants to eat turkey? It is the driest piece of meat that a person can find. It sticks in your throat, and it’s a nightmare to swallow. It sticks to the roof of your mouth, or what fancy people call the palate. Did you notice nobody ever eats plain turkey?

When’s the last time you saw someone order just plain turkey? If you had to eat white turkey meat just plain it would take until next Thanksgiving to chew it and swallow it. In America, a person’s entitled to a last meal before the death penalty.

Did you notice how nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever ordered turkey? Why do you think everyone’s always looking to add gravy, coleslaw, Russian dressing, mayonnaise, etc.

The only good thing about Thanksgiving are the side dishes – sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, carrot tzimmes and pumpkin pie.

When have you ever seen anyone eat turkey alone? Anything, anything but plain turkey, yech. Even the name turkey has a negative connotation, when someone does a bad job, they say the person is a real turkey.

They tell you turkey is healthy and not fattening, but by the time they eat it with all the other chazzerai, it’s 5,000 calories and you’ve gained three pounds.

And what’s the one thing sitting there after the whole Thanksgiving meal is done?

You got it, the turkey on the big silver tray in the middle of the table.

And who invented turkey anyway for Thanksgiving? The Pilgrims, right? In the Congress, they’re always doing referendums on every subject known to man.

Why don’t they have a referendum on whether turkey should be replaced by pastrami, corned beef, and brisket?

Anyway, all this talk of turkey makes me think of the biggest turkey of them all; you guessed right, Joe Biden.

Get married, don’t get married; thousands of couples have had to alter their altar – or bimah – plans this year in line with the ever-shifting rules. Over the next month, Kari Colmans interviews five resolute newlyweds who’ve tied the knot against the odds in true Covid style

G

eorgia Kirsch, 28, already thought she was having the best day of her life on the day her boyfriend Ronnie Morgan, 29, proposed. And that was long before he had even popped the question.

The date was 30 March 2019, when they had been together for two and a half years, and he had arranged for her to spend the day recording a song at Abbey Road Studios.

She had always loved to sing, but since losing her father almost a decade ago Georgia hadn’t found it in her heart to keep up her talent, until a special performance at a recent friend’s wedding had reminded her how much she’d once loved it.

Ronnie dressed the session up as a well done for facing her fears. He seems pretty pleased with himself as we chat over Zoom, lying back on the sofa, while Georgia is all smiles and glossy hair in a must-have lockdown co-ord.

He took her out for lunch – “and he was really taking his time!” Georgia laughs – when all she could think about was getting back to the studio. Little did she know that upon her return an even bigger surprise was in store.

The studio was showered with rose petals and photographs – the groom’s siblings had got together to pull off the ultimate setting for a truly unique proposal, while other family members waited in the wings to be summoned once she’d said yes.

And it all would have ‘come together’ had coronavirus not struck.

“The plan was to get married in Rome on 21 June 2020 at Villa Miani. The date was perfect for us, because it was my mum’s birthday and Father’s Day,” says Georgia.

“It honoured my late father and my mother.”

They had been planning for about a year before Covid-19 reared its ugly head, and they were in two minds about whether to wait it out or get on with it, as much as was possible between the various lockdowns and rule changes.

“We were in denial for ages, partially because we didn’t want to let our dream go, and our dream date,” says Georgia.

Then things got very real for them while they were abroad in March for a wedding and were almost left stranded in Morocco.

It was at that point that they decided to move their “big wedding” to 2021.

But if this year has taught them anything, it is to appreciate what they already have and to hold on tight.

“For us, I think we will look back at this time and see a journey. We have learnt what’s really important in life: about patience, about not sweating the small stuff.

You’ve got to grab on to any celebration, every happy moment, and hold on to those memories forever.

“Health and happiness are of premier importance and the rest just pales in comparison.”

BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND Jacob is on the run for his life from his brother Esau – fleeing to find refuge in the house of his uncle – and has one of the most famous and transformative dreams in the Torah: Jacob’s ladder, the proverbial ‘stairway to Heaven’.

God shows Jacob he is not alone, but escorted by angels and promises the Land of Israel will be his inheritance, with his descendants being as numerous as the ‘dust of the earth’.

Jacob is utterly overwhelmed by the experience: ‘How awesome is this place! God is indeed here and I did not know!’

What started off as a lonely, dangerous trek is suddenly transformed.

The next morning, his fears about the road ahead seem to melt away: ‘Jacob lifted his legs…’

Rashi explains this unusual phrase as meaning that when he found out he was promised an inheritance in the land of Israel, as well as guaranteed protection from harm, ‘his heart lifted his legs, and became lighter to walk’.

Similarly, the Netziv explains that Jacob was ‘walking on an open path,

with no obstacles in his way.’

That is, despite the arduous and perhaps dangerous path ahead, Jacob now viewed the journey differently: he had a new-found vision and confidence, and so was less troubled by the uncertainties of the road.

Every step was energising rather than draining.

Of course, not all of us are privy to such revelations as we may flee from danger and set out on an uncertain path. Nevertheless, as spiritual heirs to Jacob, our paths are not really new: the context may differ, but the content of the challenges – uncertainty, lack of confidence in our capabilities, trust in those around us – is ultimately the same.

Just as those who came before us – starting with Jacob on his lonely path – heard the Divine echoes from their footsteps so, too, we can find the strength and inspiration to ‘lift our legs’ and the hearts of those around us.

Proverbs (13:24) says: “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him early.”

These powerful words suggest that smiting one’s child is a form of tough love. The parent that fails to give their miscreant a good spanking is not helping them.

Nevertheless, the Talmud teaches that one should never strike an adult child because they might hit you back, thereby transgressing the obligation to honour one’s parents. Indeed, wounding a parent is a capital offence. Thus, one must avoid a situation where you might cause them to sin in response to your actions.

The Ritva explains that the prohibition applies equally to young children who might strike back.

Our sages certainly acknowledged that smacking poses a danger.

We now understand the potential long-term psychological damage if corporal punishment is not administered correctly. So what’s the right way to smack a child?

The Torah commands: “You shall admonish your fellow.” The Talmud, however states that nowadays nobody knows how to offer sincere admonishment, concluding it is better to say nothing at all than

to rebuke ineffectively.

If that’s true of verbal chastisement, then it stands to reason that nobody knows how to administer physical admonishment.

Too many parents raise their hands to their children, not out of a sense of sincere love and affection, but as an angry response to the child’s misbehaviour.

That’s unacceptable. Hitting in anger is a sin. Most of us are illequipped to administer corporal punishment from a place of love and must no touch our children.

Ultimately, many commentators do not interpret the proverb literally.

Yes, the parent who fails to discipline their child is not helping them.

‘Abraham had a third wife!’

BY RABBI SYLVIA ROTHSCHILD The traditional Torah reading for Rosh Hashanah tells of the conception and birth of Isaac. This is followed by the expulsion from the family of Hagar and Ishmael – the Egyptian concubine and her son, who Abraham fathered when Sarah thought she was barren.

On the second day, we read the story of the binding of Isaac: “Take your son, your only one, the one you love, take Isaac… and offer him up.”

The two stories bespeak Abraham’s distress at losing his sons.

After the promise that he would have many descendants, we fear for the thread to the next generation.

Of course, Isaac is not sacrificed.

Abraham is again blessed with the promise of countless descendants, and the story moves on. Sarah dies, Isaac reappears for his marriage to Rebecca, Abraham dies at the ripe age of 175 and Ishmael and Isaac come together to bury him at Machpelah, where Sarah was interred.

But six brief verses tell another sto-

ry. After Isaac’s marriage, Abraham takes another wife – Keturah, and has six sons, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Abraham gives gifts to this new family and sends them away, ensuring the inheritance goes to Isaac while he lives.

Who is Keturah? Some say she is Hagar, whom Isaac brought to comfort the widowed Abraham, but this is unlikely. Midrash tells us Sarah was the descendant of Shem, Hagar of Ham and Keturah of Japhet. All three patriarchs were sons of Noah.

In marrying each of them and having descendants, Abraham is fulfilling the promise that all the families of the earth will be blessed through him, for he is combining the separate branches of the human family tree into his tree. All humanity is folded into God’s blessing as Abraham becomes the first Hebrew and the father of all nations.

Bal tashchit (do not destroy) is one of the fundamental commandments of the Torah.

It was interpreted by the rabbis as meaning that we should not destroy fruit-bearing trees, and as a more general principle of avoiding the unnecessary destruction or wasting of resources.

Today, many of us in the Jewish community apply it as a general rule to our relationship with Mother Nature, having realised the dichotomy of our relationship with the Earth has destructive consequences for our own future.

The government’s recent 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution is a welcome and muchneeded step towards refocusing our energy as a country and becoming a greener economy.

It is a small but noble step to counteract the effects of the industrial revolution over the past 200 years, as the title of the plan suggests.

The bal tashchit principle is

formulated in a singular form as always strengthening a personal sense of responsibility of a Jewish person for the positive or negative impact we make on the natural world around us, hence ourselves.

The same principle now requires us as a Jewish community to make sure we hold the government accountable for its promises in the plan and to help the realisation of the programme as much as we can.

We also, in turn, can continue helping ourselves and others to build a healthier future by addressing

some of the issues the government did not.

For example, did you know that according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, the methane released from cows, along with the deforestation and fertilisers used for all livestock, creates as much greenhouse gas as all the world’s cars, lorries and planes combined? Or that today we still waste 4.5 million tonnes of food in the UK? So, even if each of us cannot afford to change our diesel or petrol car to an electric one, or invest into providing some of those 25,000 green jobs promised by the government in the plan, we can reduce our weekly meat consumption, food and plastic waste and the number of short trips in our cars, when a walk would do so much good to our mind and our body. ◆ Rabbi Tanya Sakhnovich serves Nottingham Progressive Synagogue
