Afghanistan has no known Jewish residents for the first time in centuries after the community’s last member left for a neighbouring country. Zebulan Simantov, 62, lived a Jewish life for several decades in his rundown synagogue in Kabul, keeping kosher and praying in Hebrew. He lived alone after his estranged wife moved with their children to Israel. For years he has refused to grant her a get, or divorce under Jewish law. Simantov’s departure, alongside 29 of his nonJewish neighbours, was organised this week by an Israeli-American businessman who runs a private security group. Tens of thousands of Afghans have fled since last month’s takeover by the Taliban. Simantov remained in Kabul the last time the Taliban took power in 1996 and had wanted to stay this time too, but accepted that he now risked becoming a target of the even more radical Islamic State group. It is understood Simantov was also persuaded to grant his wife a get by Moti Kahana, who runs the security company that helped to get him out. “That was two weeks of being a shrink, a psychiatrist, talking to him like 10 times a day, and his neighbour at the same time to translate,” Kahana told the Associated Press. Simantov previously shared his synagogue with

the country’s only other Jew, Isaak Levi, but the two men disliked each other and quarrelled often during the Taliban’s previous period in power. Their synagogue’s Torah scroll was confiscated by the Taliban in 2002 and never recovered. When Levi died in 2005 at the age of 80, Simantov said he was happy to be rid of him. Hebrew documents uncovered in Afghanistan in 2013 suggest Jews may have lived in the country a thousand years ago. By the 19th century there were 40,000 living in the country, many of them Persian Jews who fled forced conversion in nearby Iran. Most of Afghanistan’s Jews began to leave after Israel’s establishment in 1948, with the last families leaving after the Soviet Union invaded in 1979.

Search engine ‘racism’ will go unpunished by draft bill He told the committee, headed by the Conservative MP Damian Collins, that he had been involved in “contructive discussions with Facebook, Tik Tok and Twitter” over tackling antisemitic content on their platforms. “I”ve had less constructive, certainly difficult discussions with Microsoft. The bill at present exempts search companies from category one. “Search companies are having a laugh at the bill’s expense if they are not included in category one.” Stone then told the committee that on Microsoft’s Bing “if you use the word ‘goyim’ on there you will get an antisemitic website as a top search result along with a banned Twitter account”. He later confirmed to Jewish News that the antisemitic website in ques-
The government’s bill to tackle antisemitic and racist hate online will fail to punish the Microsoft search engine Bing for directing users to a website pumping out vicious antiJewish content, a charity chief has warned MPs, writes Lee Harpin. Danny Stone, director of the Antisemitism Policy Trust, gave the example of Bing directing internet users who typed the word ‘goyim’ into its search mechanism being directed as a top result to an antisemitic online channel as he gave evidence to a Westminster committee. He said that in its current form the Online Safety Bill “exempts search companies from category one” – which is designed to punish social media companies that fail to stop harmful content on their platforms. Speaking to parliament’s joint committee on the draft bill on Thursday, Stone also said the Google search engine used to direct people who typed in the two words “Jews are …” to the top result of “Jews are evil.”

Stone gave the example of the “onslaught” of antisemitic abuse
directed at former Labour MP Luciana Berger and questioned the impact of this example on young women considering careers in the public eye. Earlier, former England footballer Rio Ferdinand gave evidence to the committee seeking possible improvements to the government’s draft Online Safety Bill, formerly known as the Online Harms Bill. Ferdinand, 42, said he had seen family members “disintegrate” after he was abused on social media. “Self-esteem, your mental health is at risk,” Ferdinand said. The former Manchester United defender described it as “disheartening” to see levels of racism in football rising to the levels seen in the 1970s and 80s. At the end of Thursday’s evidence session, Stone offered the committee honey cake, informing them that Jews had just celebrated Rosh Hashanah. Aristocrat guilty of calling CAA chief ‘Jewish scum’ An aristocrat will be sentenced next month after being found guilty of calling the head of the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) “Jewish scum”, writes Jack Mendel. Piers Portman made the remark in June 2018 following the sentencing of notorious Holocaust denier and antisemite Alison Chabloz. The son of the 9th Viscount Portman and heir to 110 acres of West End real estate spoke to Falter outside the courtroom after the CAA chief executive had testified against Chabloz. According to the CAA, Portman “extended his hand to Mr Falter, who refused to shake it because the building was filled with what he told Southwark Crown Court was a “Who’s Who of Holocaust deniers, neo-Nazis and far-right extremists”. Portman then became “very enraged” before telling him: “I have written to you before. Come after me, you Jewish scum. Come and persecute me. Come and get me.” CAA published a 1,500-word letter sent by Portman, which denounces his former wife, Baroness Fiona Shackleton, who is Jewish. In the letter, he calls her a “greedy, grasping and lying manipulator of the system that happens to be Jewish”. He also accused her of “playing the Talmud-inspired ‘Tyrant posing as a victim’.” Under cross-examination, Portman said he attended Chabloz’s hearing to “learn more about my own circumstances” as he was being “persecuted by Jewish tyrants posing as victims”. In a majority verdict, 10 out of 12 jurors at Southwark Crown Court found Portman guilty of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm and

distress. The judge warned he was “not ruling any sentence out”. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that it would be seeking a hate crime sentence uplift. Sati Dhadda, of the CPS, said: “Antisemitism has no place in our society and will not be tolerated. Piers Portman’s conduct was disgraceful and utterly audacious in a courthouse. No one should be subjected to such abuse based on their race or religion.” Falter said: “This is a good result for British justice and British Jews... It shows that even the wealthiest and most privileged cannot escape British justice and will face the consequences of their anti-Jewish racism.”

‘Disgrace’ to link with Scottish Greens by Lee Harpin lee@jewishnews.co.uk @lmharpin
Nicola Sturgeon was criticised this week for welcoming into her government a party that has not supported the internationally-recognised IHRA definition of antisemitism. Former Scottish Conservative leader Jackson Carlaw said it was an “utter disgrace” Greens coleaders Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater had been appointed as ministers after a co-operation pact was agreed with the Scottish National Party. He cited a motion passed by Scotland’s Greens in 2015 that condemned “Israel’s claim to be the Jewish state” and labelled Zionism as “based on
Jewish supremacy in Palestine”. Members also called for Hamas to be removed from a list of terrorist organisations. Scotland adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism in full in 2018. Joe Glasman, of Campaign Against Antisemitism, called on the Scottish first minister to “urgently clarify” her government’s policy. He said: “If she fails to control the extremist elements of her new governing partner, she’ll be to blame for elevating those views into the national conversation. Amid campaigns for Hamas to be proscribed in full by the UK government, a party whose policy is the opposite sits in the Scottish government.” Jackson Carlaw, MSP for Eastwood, said the
Greens “have backed positions that appear to be contrary to the IHRA definition. Nicola Sturgeon has to distance her government from this shameful stance”. Sturgeon was criticised over a tweet this year in which she appeared to take a one-sided stance over the recent conflict with Israel and the Palestinians. But she met with Scottish Jewish communal leaders last month to reassure them she was balanced in her approach. A spokesman for the Scottish Greens said the party “abhors antisemitism”, adding: “Green politics is rooted in environmentalism, peace, social justice and democracy. Our party’s position on international affairs, including Palestine and Israel, is guided by these pillars.”
Nicola Sturgeon ‘needs to clarify’ her policy
LABOUR BANS ACTIVIST LAWYER Hate hashtags on Instagram A criminal defence solicitor and prominent pro-Palestine campaigner in Liverpool has been suspended from the Labour Party for 24 months following an investigation into allegations involving antisemitism. Jeremy Hawthorn was banned by party chiefs following complaints about his conduct on social media. Campaigners against antisemitism in Liverpool Labour alerted Jewish News to the sanction against Hawthorn last week. He is listed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority as working for Levins Solicitors, based in
Liverpool. His role is believed to be a consultant. Two separate sources confirmed: “Hawthorn is obsessed with Israel but is often quite careful with his own social media posts.” In July Everton football club confirmed it had begun an investigation into Hawthorn and another Labour activist after they were photographed with a banner bearing the football club’s official crest calling for Israel to be kicked out of international football. Hawthorn is co-organiser of an anti-arms protest in Liverpool, citing Israeli firms, planned for 11 September, at which Jeremy Corbyn is due to speak.
Instagram users are being exposed to antisemitic content even while they are not necessarily searching for it, a report has revealed. The study, based on research by the Woolfe Institute in Cambridge, showed how posts on the social media platform circulating popular conspiracy theories would also include hashtags that were antisemitic in nature. The widely shared conspiracy theory #chemtrails – based on the claim that aircraft vapour trails are biological agents used for secret nefarious purposes – was associated with antisemitic hashtags in thousands of Instagram posts. 5G phone mask conspiracy theory posts, and
others claiming the existence of a #deepstate or #pedogate, were also shown to be linked to further hashtags openly antisemitic in nature. The antisemitic hashtags were viewed thousands of times by Instagram users during the study’s seven-week research period. The report is released in the week that pre-legislative scrutiny of the Online Safety Bill begins. Danny Stone, chief executive of the Antisemitism Policy Trust, said: “As our report shows, enforcement by platforms remains totally inadequate.” The report urges Instagram, owned by Facebook, to use better algorithmic filtering of antisemitic words.
The Journey Home
We’re on a Journey For decades, organised trips to Israel have provided the impetus for ongoing communal involvement and activism from our community’s teenagers and young adults. Before the pandemic over 2,000 were taking part in these trips, overseen by UJIA, every year. In the last 18 months this number has dropped to almost zero. To counter this, UJIA is committed to sending 10,000 Jewish teenagers and young adults on an organised Israel experience over the next three years. Your support will help get the future leaders of our community on to a journey they will never forget. The journey home. Donate today by visiting ujia.org/kn21 or call 020 7424 6447

Momentum has been accused of “pathetic playground posturing” after claiming the “Labour right” is backing a call for “a catastrophic military intervention in Palestine” to overthrow Hamas. An email circulated to supporters of the hard-left organisation ahead of this month’s Labour Party conference insists Momentum needs to raise £30,000 in funds to “compete with the megadonors of the Labour right”. The Team Momentum email appeals for donations from supporters after citing an alleged call by the pro-Keir Starmer Labour First group to oust Hamas by mililary force. Momentum claims: “At this year’s Labour conference, right-wing faction Labour First is backing a motion which not only rejects the peaceful
Momentum supporters rally
BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions] movement, but also calls for the removal of the government in Gaza. This policy is not possible without a catastrophic military intervention in Palestine. ” But Jewish News has obtained a copy of a model conference motion, titled TwoState Solution, which is being backed by groups including Labour Friends of Israel (LFI) along with Labour To Win –
and it bears little resemblence to Momentum’s claims. It calls for “two states for two peoples – a Jewish state in Israel alongside a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza” along with “West Jerusalem” as Israel’s capital and “East Jerusalem” as the “capital of the new Palestinian state”. It also seeks free and democratic elections in the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Gaza. Luke Akehurst, Labour First’s director said: “It’s pathetic. We need grown-up politics about serious international issues – not playground posturing and appeals to the extremes.” LFI director Michael Rubin told Jewish News: “The hard-left have learnt absolutely nothing from the last five years. Removing Hamas – a genocidal antisemitic terror group – and restoring legitimate PA control in Gaza is a necessary step to a negotiated two-state solution.”

Welsh leader keeps shtum after fringe event challenge by Lee Harpin lee@jewishnews.co.uk @lmharpin
Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford has failed to address his decision to speak at a conference featuring the film-maker Ken Loach in response to a letter from a constituent. Drakeford, who is leader of Welsh Labour, confirmed in a response that he had accepted an invite to speak at The World Transformed event on 27 September in Brighton. Loach – who was last month auto-excluded from Labour over his membership of a proscribed organi-
sation – is also among the speakers booked for the four-day event, which coincides with the official Labour Party conference. A Cardiff South and Penarth resident, who asked not to be named, had written to Drakeford last week to express their “disgust” he was billed to appear at an event with the film director, who they said was “the same Ken Loach of Perdition fame”. The constituent added: “First Minister, I hope your inclusion in this event is a mistake... and you will make a public statement and apology.” In response, Drakeford failed to mention Loach and said: “I am

CORBYN GETS CONFERENCE PASS Jeremy Corbyn will be granted a pass to Labour’s conference in Brighton this month. The former leader (pictured) will also be free to address fringe meetings despite his status at the moment as an independent MP, a party spokesperson has confirmed. The Islington North MP had the whip suspended by leader Sir Keir Starmer last year over his response
to the Equality and Human Rights Commission report into the handling of antisemitism. A senior Labour source told Jewish News: “Look, Jeremy Corbyn is still a member of the party. Of course he is still allowed to go to conference, even if he is not currently a Labour MP. “You don’t have to be a Labour member to apply to attend party conference either. It has not been uncommon for Conservatives to attend and to speak in past years.”
Wales or in Labour. I have accepted an invitation to speak at a fringe event at the Labour Party confer-
ence later this month, diary permitting, about a Welsh pilot of universal basic income – a policy which was part of the Welsh Labour manifesto.... The conversation would be with a Welsh Labour MP and an economist.” The local constituent said Drakeford’s response to their email was “tone deaf”. The World Transformed was launched under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, backed by groups such as Momentum, Unite and the CWU union. Loach’s name appears near the top of the list of speakers, despite his expulsion for involvement with Labour Against The Witchhunt.
Herzog in Jordan for talks Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has visited Jordan for talks with King Abdullah II, in the latest sign of warming ties between the countries. He spent a very positive and important evening with the king at his palace, Herzog told Israeli news television. “Jordan is a very important country. I have immense respect for King Abdullah, a great leader, and a highly significant regional actor,” Herzog was quoted as saying in a statement from his office. “In our meeting, among the things we discussed were the core issues in the
dialogue between our states. There is a sense in the region of a desire to make progress, a desire to speak,” he added. Herzog noted that it had been a year since the first of the Abraham Accords – the normalisation agreements between Israel and four of its regional neighbors, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan – were signed. “These accords created an important regional infrastructure. They are highly important agreements, which are transforming our region and the dialogue within it,” he said.

News / Surgery success / News briefs Wiley charged with assault and burglary The rapper Wiley has been charged with assault and burglary at the home of a former kickboxer. The performer, whose real name is Richard Kylea Cowie Jr, is accused of breaking in to a flat in Forest Gate, east London. He is due to appear in court on 13 September accused of assault and burglary. Cowie engaged in days of online antisemitism last year, accusing Jews of being “racist” and “cowards” and asking if it was antisemitic “to say Jewish people have power”. He was banned by Twitter.
ADL says sorry over mosque opposition The Anti-Defamation League has apologised for opposing an Islamic centre planned for Lower Manhattan, near the World Trade Center. Refering to the pronouncement made 11 years ago, chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt said: “We were wrong, plain and simple.” The apology came on the 20th anniversary of the 2001 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Greenblatt noted the timing in his piece during Rosh Hashanah, which he said he wrote in a spirit of repentance.
Conjoined twins separated by Israeli and UK surgeons One-year-old twin girls joined at the head have been successfully separated in Israel by a team of British and Israeli surgeons. From Israel the surgery was led by Dr Mickey Gideon, director of paediatric neurosurgery at Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva and from the UK by Dr Noor ul Owase Jeelani, a consultant paediatric neurosurgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital The 12-hour operation was supported by a local team at Soroka Medical Centre. It is the first time the procedure has been carried out outside the UK by the team at medical charity Gemini Untwined since it was founded in 2018 by Jeelani. The team has now completed five separation surgeries since 2006, two of them before the establishment of Gemini. Jeelani said: “I am delighted the surgery has gone well and the girls, their family and the local team have had a good outcome. “It is through this process of teamwork and knowledge-sharing glob-
ally that we can hope to improve the outcome for all children and families that find themselves in this difficult position.” Kamal Rahman, one of the founders of Gemini Untwined, said: “It’s exciting that we have now helped three families from different countries with this life-changing surgery.” Rahman said the prevalence of conjoined twins is higher in less developed communities where there is little foetal monitoring, which is where charities such as Gemini Untwined can assist. He said: “Gemini seeks to provide not only research and technical support to the local medical teams, but also financial support to facilitate the complex surgery and post-operative rehabilitation where needed. “We are presently supporting other families that find themselves in

vive beyond the first 30 days of life. With current technologies, which the charity aims to make more accessible, approximately half of these cases would be candidates for successful surgical separation.

Even as the world watched the television pictures of an airliner flying into one of New York’s iconic Twin Towers, the finger-pointing had begun. It would be clear within days responsibility lay with Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda network. They planned the attacks that killed so many and shattered the post-Cold War illusion of a peaceful world. But in the immediate aftermath some were pointed to the Palestinians. Speaking over live pictures of a smouldering Manhattan barely three hours after the first plane struck, NBC anchor Katie Couric told viewers: “The US government has become increasingly unpopular, particularly in the West
Bank and Gaza Strip, as Palestinians feel the US government has sided with Israel.” Her colleague Tom Brokaw said: “Everyone thought the bomb was ticking in the Middle East. No one expected anything of these kinds of consequences to be visited upon this country in this horrific way.” That ticking bomb was the Second Intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israel that had been raging for nearly a year by 11 September 2001. There were frequent clashes across the West Bank and Gaza Strip, suicide bombings striking civilians within Israel and regular military incursions. Even as America’s morning of terror began to unfold, the Israel Defense Forces had sur-

rounded the West Bank town of Jenin and gun battles were raging. And as pictures of the collapsing Twin Towers were relayed around the world, news agencies were distributing footage of ordinary Palestinians on the streets of the West Bank and Gaza, apparently celebrating the news. But much like others, most Palestinians were stunned by what they saw on their televisions. Then Palestian Authority president Yasser Arafat was quick to condemn what he saw as international terrorism. This was a devastating attack on the world’s only superpower. For anyone who did not make clear which side they were on, the repercussions were sure to be withering.

The building was closed down as morning services began after a leak caused by a burst pipe meant the water had to be shut off, making the toilets unusable. Chairman David Landau said they had not option but to shut the building. “Members were able to hear the shofar in an area outside the shul ... at several times throughout the day. We anticipate that the leak will be fixed quickly.”

It’s not a demo, it’s not a protest, it wasn’t against the schools, it was an open discussion to say ‘Let’s do something about it.’” He estimated that about 30 children were affected, and for a variety of reasons, which could include schools being oversubscribed or a school place not being suitable for a particular child. “But in our community, we don’t want even a small percentage of children being left behind,” he said.

Hundreds of members of the Charedi community in Stamford Hill gathered on Sunday over concerns about a lack of school places for children. An estimated 400 people attended the meeting at Clapton Common, with community figures leading a prayer for school places. One of the organisers of the gathering, Moshe Margolis, said it was aimed at highlighting that a small group of children had not found a suitable school place. “There is a situation where many different schools with different criteria, there’s always going to be some falling

Yavneh boys help youngster by Jack Mendel jack@jewishnews.co.uk @mendelpol
A relieved mother has praised four Yavneh students who came to the aid of her three-year-old boy after he crashed his bike. Lisa Bourke of Borehamwood thanked the teenagers for seeking urgent medical help after young Harry (pictured) collided with a brick wall last week and sustained injuries that required surgery. In a Facebook group called What’s Coming To The Wood, Bourke posted a picture of a smiling
Harry with a bandage around his head and wrote that the teenagers had “really restored my faith in humanity”. She said Harry “couldn’t stop on his balance bike and went right into a brick wall and unfortunately severely injured his head”. She added: “I was on my own and had to try and stop the bleeding. If they weren’t there to help by calling 999 and helping me a lot with my son I don’t know how I would have coped.” Her post received more than 1,300 ‘likes’ and 150 comments, before Bourke was put in touch
with the parents of the students. Speaking to Jewish News, Bourke said she had now been “lucky enough to get in touch with the parents of these four boys to thank them all personally”. She added: “They are an absolute credit to their parents. If it wasn’t for these four boys I wouldn’t have managed to get my son the help he needed as fast as he did. They went above and beyond to get medical help from their local college and called 999 on my behalf while I was trying to stop the bleeding. “My son had to have surgery the next morning but is finally on the
mend. It’s a moment I will never forget.” The boys, who the school said had asked not to be named, were also praised by Yavneh headteacher Spencer Lewis, who said: “We are extremely proud of what the students did in coming to the aid of a young child and his mother and I have already publicly congratulated them and written to their parents. “Their actions are an embodiment of our school moto of olam chesed yiibaneh – a world built on kindness’, which sits at the centre of everything we believe.”
SUMMER CAMP BREAKS DOWN BARRIERS A trailblazing interfaith summer camp that brings together children from different faiths to promote social cohesion returned this year after being recognised for its work, writes Joshua Salisbury. Camp Unity, a five-day camp for primary school pupils, took place for children across the Borehamwood and Elstree area from 15 to 20 August after being recognised with a High Sheriff Award
and a Hertsmere Borough Council award. Children of 15 nationalities and a variety of religions attended – and were visited by the Chief Constable of Hertfordshire who brought along patrol cars in which children could take photos. Camp Unity co-organiser, Rabbi Jeff Berger of Wembley Sephardi Synagogue, said the event had broken down barriers

between children of different backgrounds and led to greater cooperation between faith leaders. “Beforehand, these children would probably walk past each other on the street, and not have much engagement with each other, because they would be cloistered in their bubbles, so it was about building some social cohesion in our town,” he said. “It helps them make friends
from different backgrounds. It’s made us [faith leaders] aware of where we’re strong and where we’re lacking, and now we’re on really good terms.” Alongside the police visit, camp-goers were taken to a ‘Splash’ session at the Venue Leisure Centre, to work on an allotment at Stapleton Road, and to the working farm and attractions at Aldenham Country Park.

Abuse report an ‘urgent wake up call’, says Chief by Josh Salisbury josh@jewishnews.co.uk @josh_salisbury
A devastating report into child abuse in religious organisations is an “urgent wake-up” call, the Chief Rabbi has said. Last week’s report from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse found “shocking failures” in many religious settings to protect children, including in Jewish organisations. Some major Jewish organisations did not even have a child protection policy, it found, while concerns were heard about potential for child abuse in unregulated yeshivas. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who was praised for his “clear communication” of the “abhorrence of child protection failures”, said everyone must take greater responsibility. “The report confirms … that perpetrators of abuse find it all too easy to hide in an environment where religious institutions command a great deal of respect and where a hierarchy of religious leadership is in place,” he said. “These, together with a variety of other cultural factors, including a power imbalance and fear of reputational damage, have made our children more vulnerable to the scourge of abuse. This cannot be allowed to continue any longer. “The failure to protect our children, and to report abuse where it occurs, is a complete abrogation of our responsibility to God and to one another. It cannot and must not be tolerated.” The report recommended that all religious organisations should have a child protection policy, and that the government should legislate to amend the definition of full-time education.
Alexis Jay chaired the inquiry into child sexual abuse. Inset: The Chief Rabbi
Among the examples of child abusers trying to hide from justice was the case of paedophile Todros Grynhaus, a prominent member of the Manchester Charedi community. Grynhaus was jailed for 13 years in 2013, with a judge finding he had “felt able to rely on a prevailing attitude of insularity” in the community to avoid being held to account for his crimes. Some Jewish organisations, including the United Synagogue (US), were praised for being a “rare example” of an umbrella body which provides support for safer recruitment. US chief executive Steven Wilson welcomed the report, saying the movement would support “more formal and proportionate regulation of child protection within religious organisations and would be pleased to work with the Commission on this important piece of work”. Other Jewish bodies were criticised, however, including the strictly Orthodox Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations. The inquiry said that there was “a mismatch between the organisation’s stated position and its actual practice in responding to allegations of child sexual abuse”.
28-YEAR-OLD ‘ATTACKED FIVE PEOPLE OVER TWO HOURS’ A 64-year-old man was left unconscious after he was allegedly punched by a man accused of unprovoked attacks on five Jewish people in north London, a court has heard. Abdullah Qureshi, 28, allegedly carried out a spate of assaults in the Stamford Hill area over two hours on 18 August, Thames Magistrates’ Court heard. He has been charged with one count of racially or religiously aggravated wounding or grievous bodily harm, four counts of racially or religiously aggravated common assault and one count of racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage. The court was told Qureshi is alleged to have “struck a victim in the side of the head before walking off ” at 6.40pm, before hitting
another person “in the face with a bottle” two minutes later. Qureshi is also accused of having “assaulted an unidentified person in a supermarket”, and a fourth victim in the street, who police have identified as a 14-year-old boy. The court heard that at around 8.30pm, Qureshi allegedly “punched” a fifth person, who police say is aged 64, leaving him unconscious. The man was treated at Homerton Hospital for injuries to his face. The judge described the allegations against Qureshi, of Park Road in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, as “very serious” and remanded him in custody. A trial date has been set for Snaresbrook Crown Court on 1 October.

Simon didn’t know where to turn. The brown envelopes kept coming through the door, containing demands in ever fiercer language. The years of tax returns he hadn’t submitted. The bills. The £50,000 of credit card debt. He would dump them in a pile, and try and forget about them. This had been coming for years, ever since he’d lost his well-paid job. His next job paid a lot less. He covered the gap with credit cards, and then juggled the repayments – using one credit card to pay the minimum payment on another.

What made everything harder was that Simon has Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD, which means he finds it very difficult to focus and to keep track of things. He recalls: “I was, I would say, clinically depressed. I found it very hard to get up in the morning, very hard to see people. I couldn’t face the feeling of helplessness. I felt I was letting my wife down, letting my family down, and I couldn’t understand why. “I couldn’t see any way out of where we were, I really could not. I could only see it ending in absolute disaster, be it divorce or even myself just having had enough.”

Simon saw a small ad for Paperweight. The Paperweight caseworker, Henry, helped Simon negotiate with the credit companies to waive some of the debt, and to start repaying the rest with small, affordable payments. He also found a much cheaper mortgage, and helped Simon and his wife, Amy, to budget so that they were living within their means. Henry says: “If things are piling up, writing letters can be quite daunting. What seems like a big job to them is easy for me. I’m here to help people get themselves out of a hole, to remove the blocks that lead them to sabotage themselves. It is very satisfying to see people like Simon regain control of their lives.”
For Simon, Paperweight’s help has been life-changing: “Paperweight were fantastic because they came in when I was in complete despair. They gave me not only a way out, but also the belief, the inner belief that I could move forward.”

Special Report / Heartwarming moment
The Jewish Marine whose smile for an Afghan baby went viral Matt Jaffe, 27, was handed the infant during the evacuation of Kabul, writes Ron Kampeas Meryl Jaffe says she is like any Jewish parent keeping track of her kids on social media, except it can be terrifying. When she heard President Joe Biden deployed 3,000 US Marines to Afghanistan, she had a gut feeling that her son Matt – she calls him Matthew – was among them. Her family was tracking the troops on social media to verify their suspicions. “Matthew’s sister, Rebecca, saw it on one of the Marine websites that she follows on Instagram. And she said, ‘I think this is Matthew.’ “We enlarged the picture,” Meryl Jaffe, a New York City resident, said in an interview. “And I’m like, ‘That’s him!’ It was the first time we had seen his face in days and days and days. So it was like a relief to see him.” The photo was of Matt Jaffe, a 27-year-old sergeant, cradling a baby
in Afghanistan on 20 August. The soldier’s smile, and the story behind the photo, helped make it go viral. Matt connected with the infant after another Marine handed the baby to him, according to news reports. The child was later reunited with its father. “I’m just a Marine, same as the men and women I serve besides, doing a job to try and help people and protect people,” he said in a statement attributed in the media to the Marines. “It’s pretty grim out here and sad. I had an opportunity to show some humility and do something that was good for the soul.” Meryl said the smile was her son through and through. “He has a really good heart. He’s a good soul.” She was not surprised to see him bond with a child: Matt Jaffe had spent five years coaching kids at the
Manhattan Jewish kids’ camp. There was one family whose boys especially adored him. “He was their go-to babysitter,” his mother recalled, saying both parents were professionals with unpredictable work schedules. Matt would agree to babysit at a moment’s notice. “The boys loved him because he was fun to play with.” Meryl said she and her husband did not expect a military career for their son. “Matthew was a kid that the only weapon he had was a very small water pistol in the playground, he was not allowed to have a Super Soaker,” she said. “We would not buy a Super Soaker for him.” Matt got work as a bouncer when he was studying criminology at the University of Maryland. He had made friends with other bouncers, some of whom were former Marines. He enlisted his senior year and was off to

boot camp within days of obtaining his degree. He signed on for six years and is due for discharge in May, when he plans to pursue graduate studies. Having a son in the Marines hasn’t been easy. “We were very, very, very concerned,” Meryl said. “It’s not what we had expected. But we knew we needed to support him and get behind
him. And that’s what we’ve done. We had to. We’re his parents, we love him.” She knew he was in Kuwait when Biden deployed Marines to Afghanistan to help wind down operations. When Biden warned just before the last troops left that a second deadly attack could be imminent, she said it was “very frightening”.

Tribute to Mourinho’s ‘shadow’ by Lee Harpin lee@jewishnews.co.uk @lmharpin
A leading sports media executive, journalist and former communications director for Chelsea FC under manager José Mourinho has died aged 52 after a short illness. Simon Greenberg, 52, who was a fanatical Tottenham Hotspur fan and always proud of his Jewish roots, died peacefully at his home in Queens Park, north-west London last week – only months after being diagnosed with the incurable Creutzfeldt-Jakob brain disease. Mourners, restricted in number owing to Covid regulations, gathered at Edgwarebury Cemetery for the funeral, with hundreds more viewing the service online via a Zoom link. In an emotional eulogy, Greenberg’s father, Benson, spoke of his and his wife Judy’s pride at
Simon Greenberg with José Mourinho
their son’s achievements in his life – including his famous 1995 journalistic scoop while at the Mail on Sunday on Arsenal manager George Graham’s acceptance of a £400,000 “bung”.
Benson spoke movingly of Greenberg’s loyalty to his family – and his devotion to his wife, Fran, and their children. He also proudly recalled how his son had participated in the Maccabiah Games – “the Jewish Olympics” – in Tel Aviv in 2009, where he won a bronze for Great Britain as a swimmer in the veterans swimming. Born in north London in 1969, Greenberg read history at Exeter University and gained a place on the prestigious City University post-graduate journalism course and eventually became the Evening Standard’s sports editor and News Corp’s global head of rights. In 2004, he moved away from journalism to join Chelsea Football Club as its public affairs chief, soon becoming known as Mourinho’s “shadow” – as he would often intervene when the outspoken manager made one of his controversial comments.
Neo-Nazi conviction ‘unduly lenient’ The Attorney General’s Office has been asked to review whether an unduly lenient sentence was handed to an ex-student who was told to read classic novels and given a suspended prison term for a terrorism offence. Ben John, who police described as a white supremacist with a neo-Nazi
ideology, was given a two-year suspended sentence at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday. The 21-year-old was found guilty by a jury on 12 August of possessing a record of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.
Police said John, of Addison Drive, Lincoln, had amassed 67,788 documents in bulk downloads on to hard drives, containing “a wealth” of white supremist and antisemitic material as well as details on how to construct various explosive devices. According to media reports,
John was invited by Judge Timothy Spencer QC to read famous works including Pride And Prejudice as he was given a five-year serious crime prevention order and told he must return to court in January. Anti-fascist group Hope Not Hate was among those asking for a review.
CAMP SIMCHA EXPANDS ITS SERVICES A Jewish charity that cares for gravely-ill children has extended its services to include serious mental health conditions. Camp Simcha made the announcement this week following a successful pilot scheme during the pandemic. Chief executive Neville Goldschneider said: “Throughout the past 18 months we have worked collaboratively with communal organisations such as the Jewish Leadership Council, Jami, Norwood and Noa Girls, to ease pressures on mental health provision in the last two years. “Families we have supported via the pilot project particularly referenced the huge benefits of services such as our family liaison officer support; sibling art sessions and group; volunteers for siblings, as well as family support and respite activities.” He added the charity was “expanding our team to meet this increased service need” and said it would “continue to work collaboratively with all other organisations in order to avoid duplication and maximise impact”.

Joe Bellman with his late mother, Michelle, who died in 2019
Devastated after his mother lost her 11year-long fight against breast cancer, former JFS and Yavneh pupil Joe Bellman opened up about his feelings through a candid podcast on coping with grief. Now, after 25 episodes of his Living With Loss series – which is available on Apple, Spotify and YouTube – Bellman, 21, is one of the most respected commentators on the sensitive topic, especially among younger listeners struggling to come to terms with tragic circumstances. “When I first lost mum, one of the things I looked towards was the internet, as I tried to work out what to do as a young person who had just lost a parent,” recalls Bellman, of the weeks following his mother Michelle’s death in October 2019. “I found there was a lack of relatable resources for young people who were going through bereavement. One thing mum always showed us was the importance of helping others and the best way was to speak openly about grief and loss itself. That’s why I started the podcasts.”
A primary school teacher, and always full of life, even during her gruelling battle against cancer, Michelle had taken part in numerous events to help raise awareness of the disease. “She was diagnosed when I was eight,” Finchley-born Bellman recalls. “In a way that means we made the most of the moments she had, but it doesn’t make the loss go away. So I’ve found ways to carry it as inspiration, as a way to find more freedom and connection in life.” Bellman used his barmitzvah money to help pay for the hire of a sound engineer and a visual editor for the podcasts. After hearing Bellman’s narrative – in which he described how his mother’s determination to carry on living her life to the full up until her final days in hospital left him inspired to do something that properly honoured her legacy – he was soon approached by other people learning to cope with grief and loss themselves. His podcasts now attract audiences of several thousand each month. “One of the things I rasise is how these conversations release a lot of trauma,” explains the Nottingham University student. “I’ve spoken to people who have had

All but one of the medals was in swimming and three Israeli swimmers — Mark Malyar, Ami Dadaon and Iyad Shalabi — broke world records in the water. “It’s success for a team that isn’t just good athletes, but wonderful human beings and modest people.” Bolotin, a top swimmer in his youth, was injured by a Sinai landmine during military service in the 1970s, and went on to take part in six Paralympic Games and win six medals. As delegation head today he sees himself continuing the same proud tradition. “There is nothing in the world like that moment when you go into the opening ceremony with the Israeli flag – it’s just amazing,” he told Jewish News. But many people don’t realise what stands behind today’s success. Bolotin said it waas an outdated view to believe the Paralympic team is a bittersweet
Israeli legacy, powered by sportspeople who have been injured in army service. “It used to be military disabilities in the 1970s and the 1980s when there were many people who had been hurt in wars, but now it’s an elite sport, and like in any Olympic sport you have to start training as a kid,” he said. “Only five of the 33 people in the squad became disabled in the army, while in the 1970s it was twothirds of the delegation.” He thinks three factors today explain Israel’s success: first, the “proud tradition of Paralympic sport and achievements of those who were injured in the military in the 70s and 80s”. Second was the “very devoted” coaches, and third was the attitude of the government. “Funding has increased, scholarships are quite good, and governments have shown that Paralympic sports

are high priority.” This reverence for Paralympic sport on the part of authorities minimised the impact of lockdowns, which meant that, apart from one month, the athletes continued to train throughout the pandemic. Unlike occasional boycotts of sporting events, Israeli
competitors felt very welcome at these games, with no politically fuelled antagonism. “There really isn’t politics here,” he said. “The Paralympics are all about sport.” One of happy aspects of the Games has been celebrations for Shabbat. “With help from the embassy and Chabad we had celebration with kiddish, wine and challah, and most of the athletes came. Some are religious, some aren’t, but we all celebrated together.”
While everyone was dealing with isolation and lockdown, I was also trying to save my daughter’s life. Rachel’s daughter was struggling with severe anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Rachel was finding it hard to cope. Jami helped her through an unimaginable time. Listening without judgement, giving practical help, and supporting every step of the way. Your gift will help more families like Rachel’s get the support they need to cope with the impact of mental illness.

World News / Artefacts on show / Machzor auction Jewish leader’s ‘tears’ over swastika ban
An Australian Jewish leader said he shed “tears of joy” after a state government announced plans to ban the swastika and other Nazi symbols. The Victoria government has proposed banning the public display of hate symbols except for educational or historical purposes as part of an anti-vilification law covering disability, sexual orientation and gender identity. The AntiDefamation Commission’s Dvir Abramovich said he would be “lying if I didn’t admit to shedding tears of joy”.
Biden urges Senate to confirm Lipstadt
Joe Biden has urged the US Senate to swiftly confirm his nominee Deborah Lipstadt as the State Department’s antisemitism monitor. In a Rosh Hashanah webinar, the president revealed how he intended to combat a spike in antisemitic incidents, noting Attorney General Merrick Garland was hiring staff to coordinate the prosecution of hate crimes and cited his nomination of Lipstadt.
Jewish treasures on display Rare Jewish artefacts, including a calendar from the 12th century, are being showcased at a new exhibition by the National Library of Israel. Launched ahead of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, A Look at the Jewish Year offers a unique view of items including the first written example of Yiddish and stunning 18th century illustrations. Created in collaboration with the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, the items will feature in a series of three films, each approximately 15 minutes long. Among the Jewish treasures is a nearly thousand year-old Jewish calendar found in the famed Cairo

700-YEAR-OLD MACHZOR LISTED FOR AUCTION Sotheby’s is putting a 700-year-old Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prayer book up for auction for $4 million (£2.9m). The Luzzatto High Holiday Machzor is the oldest Hebrew prayer book to be sold. The seller is the Alliance Israélite Universelle, a Paris-based Jewish organisation, which will use the proceeds for education and scholarships.
Named for one of its owners, the Luzzatto machzor was written and illuminated in southern Germany around the late 13th or early 14th century by a Jewish scribe and artist named Abraham, according to Sotheby’s. It was then passed through Jewish communities in France and Italy. Different owners wrote notes in the margins and amended the text based on their customs.
Two synagogues are opened in Budapest
Jewish communities in Hungary opened two new synagogues as part of the annual Jewish Cultural Festival in Budapest. One is in the centre of the city, while the other, the Vorosmarty Street Synagogu, is a 50-seat synagogue in an apartment building. The latter is owned by MAOIH, an umbrella group of Orthodox congregations and will be run by EMIH, a larger umbrella organisation affiliated with the ChabadLubavitch movement.

Potsdam shul / Special birthday / Afghans rescued / Citizenship claims / Diaspora News
‘Shul in a palace’ opens in Potsdam The German city of Potsdam finally has its first new synagogue since the Second World War – and it is based in lavish surroundings. Part of the newly inaugurated European Center for Jewish Learning, the £12 million synagogue is located at the University of Potsdam campus at the 18th century New Palace in Sanssouci Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Historian Ulrich Knufinke, who contributed to the renovation and construction project, said it was the first time that a synagogue had opened as part of a German university. Able to accommodate about 40 worshippers, it is described as “white and minimalist”, with walls that can be lit in different colours, and was officially opened last Wednesday by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Also attending were Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, plus Sonja Guentner, president of the European Union of Progressive Jews, and Israeli ambassador Jeremy Issacharoff. The synagogue has been paid for by the state of Brandenburg, whose minister Dietmar Woidke said the new home for three institutions inspired “hope, gratitude, and confidence”. Several rabbinical programmes opened in Germany after the massive

The Jewish world’s oldest fashion icon turned 100 last week and showed no sign of slowing down, having signed as a model three years ago at the age of 97. presidents, beginning with Truman and ending with Clinton. Born in Queens, New York, on 29 August 1921 to a Russian-Jewish mother and Jewish glassmaker father, she worked in her parents’ fashion boutique before studying art and marrying Carl during the Second World War. In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art ran an exhibition of her designs, triggering a busy later life in which she has launched a jewellery start-up, published a biography, attracted 1.7 million Instagram followers, and signed as a model for international agency IMG in 2019.

He has always said no, typically demanding to be paid for refusing the get, and paid to be interviewed. The latest rescue effort, launched at Taliban forces swept to power, was organ-
ised by the strictly-Orthodox community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who raised more than $60,000 (£43,000) to evacuate non-Jewish Afghans, once it became apparent Simantov would not leave. Over two days, a group called Tzedek Association helped airlift 46 Afghans to safety, including one prosecutor and four members of the women’s national football team.

SPAIN REJCTS CLAIMS OVER FRAUD CONCERNS
Spanish authorities are rejecting thousands of claims for citizenship on account of historical Jewish lineage based on concerns about fraud. In 2015, the country offered citizenship to descendants of Spanish Jews expelled five centuries earlier, in an effort to right an historic wrong, prompting more than 150,000 applications from countries such as Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela. With more than 33,000 applications accepted, the rubberstamping has slowed considerably, amid “a fear of fraud”. Venezuela’s economy is in dire straits, while Colombia and Mexico are blighted by gang wars related to drug-trafficking. Successful applicants must show evidence of medieval Sephardi ancestry through heritage certificates and family trees, and demonstrate special links to Spain and Spanish language skills through tests.
Art to be returned to Dutch descendants
Jewish groups this week hailed a decision by Amsterdam authorities requiring the city’s state museum to return suspected Nazi-looted paintings to the descendants of their original owners. It follows an interna- The painting by Kandinsky tional outcry after the Dutch government said earlier this summer that it would “re-evaluate” the holdings of the Netherlands Art Property Collection and would ask the country’s Cultural Heritage Agency to help identify the providence. Jewish families have to submit claims for the artworks’ return, then persuade a panel the benefit from their restitution trumps the benefit or public good of the institutions holding them. In 2013, a Jewish family filed a claim for the restitution of Painting with Houses by the Russian abstract art pioneer Wassily Kandinsky, held by the city-owned Stedelijk Museum, but in 2020 an Amsterdam court said the museum could retain the £20 million painting, despite the Nazi theft. The original owners sold the painting in 1940 for the equivalent of about £1,600 in today’s money, because they needed to fund their escape from Nazi Europe.

The Boys done good Send us your comments Two years ago, Angela Cohen MBE, chair of the ’45 Aid Society, was contacted by Epping Forest District Museum with a request for help: Would the 45s assist with the application for a National Lottery grant to fund an exhibition about The Boys and their stay in the area after the war? Her answer was an emphatic “of course”, and that assent led to a magnificent event last Sunday, when the three surviving members of the original 26 Loughton Boys – and their extended families and friends – returned to the leafy Essex neighbourhood where they had begun to rebuild their lives. Looking at the men, all now in their 90s, it was easy to picture them as they were when they had arrived in Loughton – as part of the education material that accompanied the exhibition reminded people. “These young people were Polish Jews who had survived the Holocaust. Most of them were the only members of their family to survive.” What they had in common, it was plain to see, was an optimistic nature and an ability to create deep and abiding friendships that have engaged succeeding generations. As Angela observed: “We have a responsibility to learn from the past.” But perhaps we also should take a lesson from the Grand Old Boys of Loughton and beyond, not discouraged by having to make their lives anew. They got on with it – while extending the hand of goodwill to others. Thank you, 45s.

VIVE LA DIFFÉRENCE! Naomi Benari’s letter, in which she argues that the only divide in Anglo-Jewry is between those who agree with her and those who are uneducated, is shockingly arrogant (Jewish News, 24 August). But when she goes on to say that “neither international law nor history are issues on which there can be differences of opinion”, she parts company with reality. Just ask any judge or any historian whether there are differences of opinion in their profession! Judaism is all about differences of opinion. Believing your own views to be sensible is one thing. Writing to a newspaper to assert that every other viewpoint is illegitimate is quite another. Gabriel Kanter-Webber, Golders Green

CASTING OFF IS ADS IN JN BACK JUST THE START THE OCCUPATION Regarding the ceremony of taschlich, I don’t recall this at all when I grew up in the 1970s. Is it a tradition that was rediscovered and had a renaissance over the past 20 or 30 years or is it an American import? I enjoyed doing it this year in the warm sunshine. For those of us who enjoy the great outdoors, this is a wonderful ritual I am glad to have encountered in adulthood. But it’s only the beginning … now we have to make the effort not to make those mistakes all over again. Mike Harris, By email
Last week you ran an advert for investment in houses which are part of an Israeli settlement on occupied Palestinian land in the West Bank. These settlements steal livelihoods from Palestinians, stop the possibility of self-determination and freedom from Palestinians and further bury the Oslo peace accords – under which this land was to be returned to Palestinian control or negotiated for later. By running adverts for these settlements you endorse a shameful occupation. I hope you stop. Eben Marks, By email

Has Israel let you down? Let’s talk more about it NACHMAN SHAI ISRAEL’S MINISTER OF DIASPORA AFFAIRS
T
o the UK’s rabbis and religious leaders, I’d like to make a suggestion: use these High Holy Days to talk about Israel from the pulpit. Not just Israel. Talk about the bonds between us, as a Jewish people, about our shared past and imagined future. Talk about the challenges, but also the opportunities. Share with your congregants that we in Israel are slowly but surely taking responsibility for our side of the relationship in a way that you have never seen, that we realise we have disappointed you and are doing teshuvah, repentance, with a sincere desire to make things right in the future. Share with them that this new government is committed to bringing back a Kotel Compromise – that is, formalising an egalitarian prayer section at the Western Wall. It is committed to learning and understanding how our actions impact your communities. Tell them that we believe in you,
and that we are ready for both your critique and your ideas. Most importantly, share with your communities that Israel desires to be your partner, to not let our politics or diverse identities serve as barriers to our fundamental belief that we are a people with a common fate and destiny. I know this message might not be easy to convey. I’ve lived long enough to see how Israel has turned from a point of pride to tension. And it’s understandable. Generations built their Judaism around the ideal of Israel and the promise of peace as the focal point of Jewish identity and Zionist hope. So when Israel disappoints, organised Jewish frameworks can also disappoint, intensifying political divides within communities, especially among the rising generation. So why would a rabbi waste his or her precious annual moment with a quiet audience on a subject that increasingly causes more controversy than connection? I believe the answer is simple. Despite the very significant challenges that stand between us, the truth is that we need each other. I am convinced we ultimately want to be in relationship with each other.

WE NEED EACH OTHER AND I’M CONVINCED WE ULTIMATELY WANT TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP
The past year highlighted just how intertwined we are as a people, when Israel’s summer military operation in Gaza led not only to a frightening rise in antisemitism but significant stress and frustration within communities. It is becoming increasingly imperative for us to work together to ensure ongoing safety, security and communal cohesion. We also still have the ability to bring out the best in each other. Israel needs your clarity and backbone to empower us to make the bold decisions that will ensure our continuity as both a Jewish and democratic state. We need your justice-minded values to assure Israelis that moving towards two states for two peoples is the only solution, both for our security and our soul. We have room to be inspired by your models of pluralism and diversity and of organised Jewish communal life within our own religious practice.
On the other end, Israel continues to be the proud manifestation of the Jewish people’s 2,000-year-old-dream. Israel – the state, the land and its people – with all of its complexities, deserves to remain a central component of Jewish identity-building and experiences around the world. Finally, you and I have a mutual mission to elevate not only our own people but the entire world through the development of shared projects on climate change as well as biomedical and technological innovation. But before we can make progress towards true peace, revitalised pluralism in Israel and the next great global initiative, we must begin with a basic conversation about peoplehood – who we are, what are our common values and language. You have the opportunity to lead your communities with these questions.
Need to talk? We’re here to listen. If you’re feeling alone, anxious or in need of someone to talk to, we are here to support you. If there is something troubling you, we will listen without judgement – there is no issue too big or small. You can call us in difficult times. West’s ignorance of Muslim world is fatal EGYPTIAN POLITICAL RISK & INTELLIGENCE ANALYST
❝
n August 2012, almost two months after senior Muslim Brotherhood figure Mohamed Morsi was sworn in, 16 Egyptian soldiers were massacred by jihadists in Rafah, in northern Sinai. I remember vividly the days before and after the attack, and the catastrophic decisions Morsi made within his first 100 days in office. To mark the holy month of Ramadan, he issued a decree to release – days before the attack – tens of convicted terrorists, including those involved in the assassination of Anwar Sadat and a plot to assassinate Hosni Mubarak. The transition to the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood changed life as we knew it. Free at last, many leading jihadists took to social media and participated in TV talk shows where they promoted their radical ideology and even called for the pyramids to be blown up. The pyramids promote idolatry and must be destroyed, they argued. Jihadism was mainstreamed, overnight. It was not, therefore,
difficult to imagine that an increase in terrorist activity was to be expected. Back then neither I nor anyone I knew, including senior decision-makers, had any doubts that Islamist terrorist groups were behind this attack. It was a simple process of linking the dots and tracing the evidence. However, a different story was supported by the then UK backbencher Jeremy Corbyn. He voiced a conspiracy theory that “the hand of Israel” was behind this attack; a conspiracy theory that any Egyptian senior politician I knew would have dismissed as nonsense. It is astonishing that Corbyn later rose to lead the UK’s main opposition party, and it is difficult to

IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE WHAT CORBYN’S FOREIGN POLICY WOULD HAVE BEEN IF HE’D BEEN PM
imagine what his foreign policy vis-à-vis the Muslim world and Israel would have been like had he been elected prime minister. Misconceptions of the Muslim world, however, are not limited to the Labour Party. American and British politicians across the spectrum hold inaccurate and false perceptions of the Muslim world, including the arguments that the Muslim Brotherhood is the legitimate representative of the average Egyptian and that only Hamas’s militant wing ought to be treated as a terrorist organisation. It is, then, hardly a surprise that President Biden was surprised by the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan. This inherent ignorance of the Muslim world, its culture and history, is likely to continue to have tragic consequences for peoples of the Middle East, Afghanistan and other parts of concern to the West, and for the US and its allies. The US’s disorderly withdrawal from Afghanistan, leaving behind military equipment, led to the emergence of a conspiracy theory that the US and its allies deliberately left equipment for the Taliban. These inherent misconceptions are offensive
to many of us, native scholars and professionals, whose insight into our affairs would be invaluable to outsiders. Regardless of how well-trained and equipped soldiers and intelligence professionals are, change and democracy are not enforced at the barrel of a gun. There’s much that an outsider would never understand. I worked and continue to work with exceptional Western scholars and professionals. Although many of them spent years in the Middle East, they still struggle fully to understand our customs, culture and traditions. While it is sometimes difficult to find voices who would provide an honest, objective view, I believe that we should be involved in the decision-making process and that our views should carry more weight. So, next time Israeli and Egyptian, professionals and scholars explain why they believe the Muslim Brotherhood and/or Hamas are terrorist organisations, do not dismiss their views over fears that they are biased. Our lives and livelihood have been, and are likely to continue to be, impacted by the decisions you make.

any of us have a favourite pair of shoes, piece of jewellery or work of art in our homes; something that sparks conversation or makes us smile. But I doubt many of us have as treasured an item as Lily Ebert has in the gold pendant she wears every day. Lily was born in Hungary in 1923, the eldest daughter in a family of six children. When the Nazis invaded Hungary in March 1944, Lily’s happy childhood was changed forever. Her observant family, who lived peacefully alongside their non-Jewish neighbours, were forced into a ghetto, cramped into shared living spaces, with barely access to sanitation, let alone the freedom to practise their faith. Months later, aged 14, Lily – along with her mother, brother and three sisters – was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She says it was lucky her father died in the ghetto: at least he has a grave. On arrival, Lily’s mother Nina, younger brother Bela, and younger sister Berta were
immediately sent to the gas chambers while Lily and her sisters Renee and Piri were selected for work in the camp. In the final moments Lily had with her mother, they switched shoes. Lily knew that her mother had hidden some jewellery, including a gold pendant, in the heel of that shoe. Almost all Jews who arrived in Auschwitz were stripped of everything they owned. But not Lily. The Nazis had run out of shoes to give to her transport. So she kept the shoes, and the necklace survived Auschwitz, hidden in the shoe heel and then hidden in scraps of bread – possibly the only piece of gold to have left Auschwitz with its original, rightful owner. Four months after arriving in the camp, Lily and her sisters were transferred to a munitions factory near Leipzig in Germany where they worked until they were sent on a death march before being liberated by US forces in 1945. In Auschwitz, Lily promised herself that if

Since her liberation, Lily has made it her mission to make sure that the world knows what she and millions of others endured. She’s accrued over one million followers on TikTok. She has met royalty, politicians and celebrities and spoken to schools across the country. When you see the strength, determination, spirit and energy of Lily, you cannot help but be astounded at all that she has suffered and lost, and all that she has achieved. Today, at 97, having recovered from Covid earlier in the year, she keeps telling her story. And when faced with antisemitism – and she does even today – her immediate answer is to keep going. ‘I am not the person the tabloids portrayed’ Gerald Ratner opens up to Francine Wolfisz about ‘the worst corporate gaff of all time’ that cost him his millionaire lifestyle and the business started by his family

or companies on the brink of collapse, the writing can be on the wall before share prices begin to plunge, but for Gerald Ratner there was no real warning the world’s largest jewellery business was about to sink faster than the Titanic – and all because of an ill-timed joke that took just seconds to deliver. On 23 April 1991, a date forever etched into the 71-year-old businessman’s mind, Ratner – who headed up a superbly successful jewellery company that incorporated his eponymously-named chain, as well as H. Samuel, Ernest Jones and Watches of Switzerland – gave a now infamous speech at the Institute of Directors’ Ratners had reported profits of £125 million at the time of the fateful speech annual dinner. To add to his devastation, he was fired by the chairman he himself had hired to help steer the company around. “I felt absolutely horrendous,” he says. “It was like a dagger to my stomach.” Ratner slipped into depression despite being usually “a cheerful soul” and he admits it took several years before he picked himself back up to establish an online jewellery company and a health club in Henleyon-Thames. Meanwhile, the company changed its name to the Signet Group and is still the world’s largest retailer of diamond jewellery. Today Ratner enjoys making a successful living as a keynote speaker – something that, I point out, is a little ironic given it was a speech that got him to this point. “I suppose it is a little,” he laughs. “Having said that, I’m not earning the money I was. “In those days, I was earning £800,000 a year, which is about £8m today. But I enjoy making people laugh, which is how I got into trouble in the first place – and I wouldn’t be doing this if it hadn’t been for that speech.” I want to ask Ratner how he feels about the decanter 30 years on – does he still think it was “crap”? “Yes, I do,” he says positively. “It was part of the line from H. Samuel and I was explaining how I couldn’t discontinue it [even if it was crap] because it sold so well. I did also say that our jewellery was of the highest quality, but that didn’t get reported.” If there is a silver lining, it is that Ratner believes he is “much more resilient now”, but still feels he was unfairly treated over the gaff. “I see myself in the mirror and know I am not the person who the papers portrayed. I’ve got nothing to apologise about. “And conversely, I can’t blame anybody else, because it was a dumb thing to say. The tabloids are what they are. I gave them their ammunition. I should have been less arrogant and more careful.” Make or Break from Auddy is available on all major podcast platforms including Spotify, Global and Apple

he raid on Entebbe – the 1976 rescue operation by Israeli commandos to release Jewish hostages after their plane was hijacked by Palestinian and German terrorists – is one of the state of Israel’s best known exploits, with no fewer than six documentaries, five dramatised films and one stage play having been produced about it. And yet, despite its renown, central aspects of what actually transpired on the ground in the Ugandan airport on 4 July 1976 remain hotly debated, chiefly among those who participated in the operation. This summer, with the 45th anniversary of the raid, the Israel Intelligence Heritage and Commemoration Center released an English translation of its 2016 oral history of the operation, Entebbe Declassified: The Untold First-Hand Stories of the Legendary Rescue Operation by operators of Sayeret Matkal, the special forces unit of the Israel Defense Forces. It is not a definitive history; it is instead an
effort to set the record straight on what happened that night, or at least to act as a counterbalance to the existing narrative. The basic facts are these: On 27 June, an Air France plane was hijacked by two Palestinians from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and two Germans from the Revolutionary Cells, a fringe leftist terrorist group. They had the plane flown to Uganda, having received the support of the country’s dictator Idi Amin, and released all non-Israeli and nonJewish passengers, save for the flight crew and a few others who decided to remain with the Jewish hostages at Entebbe Airport. The hijackers demanded the release of 53 pro-Palestinian terrorists and $5 million in exchange for the hostages. In the days that followed, Israel’s security services considered a number of responses, both rescue operations and capitulation to the terrorists’ demands. (One proposed rescue mission would have seen Israeli naval commandos approach the

Weekend / Special reunion
Celebration of surviva Survivors Harry Spiro, Sir Ben Helfgott and Janek Goldberger were joined by other ‘Loughton Boys’ at a ’45 Aid Society reunion, writes Jenni Frazer
H
arry Spiro was nine years old when war broke out in 1939, living in Piotrkow, in Poland, with his parents and younger sister, Gita. “We heard how Jews were being treated in Germany,” he told Jewish News, “but in the first weeks after the Germans invaded, nothing really happened. And then they established a ghetto, the first in Poland, and everything changed”. But Harry – like fellow Piotrkow resident Sir Ben Helfgott and Janek Goldberger, from the Polish town of Bielsko Biala – survived. After six years of indescribable persecution, the three men were fortunate enough to become members of a 700-strong close-knit group of young orphans, known as ‘the Boys’, brought to Britain by the Central British Fund [the forerunner of World Jewish Relief ] in August 1945. After landing first in Carlisle, the group, ranging from young teens to those in their early 20s, were sent initially to Windermere in the Lake District. That is well-known. What is less well-known is what happened to the Boys when they left Windermere. On Sunday, the families of many of the Boys who were sent to Loughton, Essex, joined in celebration of their survival, and an emotional reunion organised by the ’45 Aid Society. The Loughton Boys were sent to a gloriously green estate called Holmehurst, staying for
just over two years in a 19th century mansion close to Epping Forest. Twenty-six of the Windermere Boys went to Holmehurst, and each of the three survivors who took part in Sunday’s warm and welcoming event remembered their time there with great affection. Maurice Helfgott, one of Sir Ben’s sons, said: “About 12 years ago, my parents were in the neighbourhood and my father decided to knock on the door of Holmehurst.” He told the owners he had once lived there. Wendy and Richard Higgins welcomed the couple in, listened to Sir Ben’s stories of his time there, and promptly invited them to return for a grand afternoon tea – with a number of other survivors and their families. So began a close connection between the Holmehurst present owners and the ’45 Aid Society, which culminated in a unique twocentre event. Working closely with the ’45 Aid Society, the Epping Forest District Museum marked its reopening after lockdown with an in-depth exhibition about the Boys and their time in the area. The exhibition, featuring objects from the Imperial War Museum and the Jewish Museum, was “hugely popular” in the wider community, according to one of the Epping volunteers. The ’45 Aid Society helped the museum secure a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in order to stage the

exhibition. And all the security and local administration on Sunday was provided by a team of e-police officers. After a visit to the museum, the nearly 100-strong group moved on to Holmehurst itself, to be greeted by Wendy and Richard Higgins and a raft of civic and local figures, including the Lord Lieutenant of Essex and local MP Dame Eleanor Laing. A Blue Plaque on the front of the house now marks its unique history, including the stay of the Boys from December 1945 to mid-1947. Harry Spiro walked in and remembered playing table tennis in one of the reception rooms. Wendy said that one of the Boys, at that afternoon tea 12 years ago, had “recognised a tree where he had had his first kiss”. Upstairs, the Boys had shared bedrooms, four to a room, but “complete luxury” compared to the conditions in which they had lived during the war. Jan (once Janek) Goldberger, the oldest of the three surviving Loughton Boys, is a feisty 94 who recalled with a tear the night war broke out. “There was bombing in Krakow and so
we – my parents, my two older brothers and my younger sister – tried to get on the very last train out of town. My grandparents came too, but they just couldn’t make it. The Germans caught up with us and said, ‘Well, you can all go home now.’” He spread his hands in eloquent dismissal. Jan’s elder brothers, at his parents’ urging, ran away. The rest of the family ended up in a small town where Jews were rounded up on a daily basis. One night Jan, aged 12, and his father, were in bed “when the Germans burst in and tore me from his arms”. Years of different concentration camps followed until he, like many of the other Boys, spent the dying days of the war in Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, until liberated by the Russians. He never found out what became of his family. Taking part in Sunday’s celebrations were many Second Generation sons and daughters. Robyn Frydman and her husband had come from Florida to honour the memory of Robyn’s father, Loughton Boy Gerson Frydman, who became known as Jeff. He had been born in

Higgins, the local community and the fierce determination of the Loughton Boys to make the most of their opportunities in Britain. Rabbi Odom Brandman, of Buckhurst Hill Chabad, blew the shofar to welcome in the New Year and it was left to Robert Rinder MBE, son of Angela Cohen, to remind his audience “how easy it is to forget the meaning of sanctuary”. As the Holocaust survivors had good reason to know, “life can change in the blink of an eye”. But Holmehurst, and Britain, had become a welcoming sanctuary for young Jews. Most importantly, he said, was that events such as that on Sunday, allowed everyone “to become the bearers of memory”. It was a message undoubtedly taken to heart by all those present.

Lodz in 1923, so was 22 by the time the British airlift arrived in Prague to take the Jewish orphans to safety. He had survived Auschwitz and several other camps, and was determined to find a place on the British transport. Twenty-two was far too old to qualify, but, Robyn said, “he just lied”. And that went for a number of the Boys, who didn’t find it hard to convince British authorities that the emaciated orphans boarding the flight in 1945 were indeed as young as they claimed to be. As ’45 Aid Society chairman Angela Cohen MBE, daughter of one of the Boys (although not one sent to Loughton), remarked, each one of the group made a home for themselves, a living and a family. Nowhere was that more apparent than the affectionate teasing between the survivors – and the familiarity of the descendants with each other and their survivor “uncles”. “We didn’t have cousins or grandparents,” Harry’s daughter Tracy said, “but we had each other, and we were each other’s family.” Tributes were paid to Wendy and Richard

here’s nothing like the smell of lamb chops cooked over charcoal – they seem to be made for it with the tasty fat lightly charring and crisping, the outside flesh caramelising and then the juicy pink inside. Absolute heaven. Here I’ve paired the chops with a simple, but really interesting dressing I sampled in Sicily, although there the vinaigrette came with chalky broad beans and fresh fennel fronds instead of the peas and mint. Both versions are delicious. I usually say that with grilling you can achieve the same result indoors as out, and it’s mostly true. However, for this I really think it’s worth wheeling out the barbecue and lighting some charcoal. I like to serve this with my stuffed aubergines.

1 Prepare a charcoal fire in your barbecue or heat a ridged grill pan. 2 Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and blanch the peas until just tender. Drain and refresh in iced water. Drain again and set aside. 3 Season the chops well and rub with olive oil. Place on the barbecue or grill pan and cook on one side for four minutes. There should be a good caramelisation when the chops are turned over, along with a slight charring along the fat. Cook on the other side for three minutes for medium rare: the meat should have a good spring when pressed. Remove the chops from the heat to a wire rack set over a tray and squeeze over the lemon juice. Leave to rest for five to seven minutes.

SEDRA
Torah For Today
Vayelech and Shuva
What the Torah says about: Rescuing animals
BY REBBETZIN LISA LEVENE After creating new goals for ourselves on Rosh Hashanah and being judged for another year of life, we now turn our focus to accountability for our mistakes. On Yom Kippur, we stand alone, each of us reckoning with the knowledge we are important. Internalising this often poses a challenge: how do we recognise our limitations, overcome them and allow our greatness to come to the fore? An answer can be found in the Kli Yakar’s commentary (Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim ben Aaron Luntschitz on this week’s sedra), which states that Moshe spent his last day giving each tribe individually words of mussar, improvement. Approaching Yom Kippur, we recognise such advice from trusted mentors and role models is not always readily given, and recognising our own limitations is difficult. The Kli Yakar’s commentary reminds us that if we don’t receive
such objectivity independently, we should take the opportunity to actively seek it out. Rabbi Aryeh Nevin, an international expert in Jewish personal development, introduced me to The Tripod of Objectivity, which is something I try to do at this point in the year. He postulates that there are three types of relationships that help us realise our mistakes and see our greatness: a mentor/teacher whom we respect; a friend/peer who is confronting a similar challenge; and finally, a student/employee/child, who looks up to us and sharpens our minds by the questions they ask. Subjectivity blinds us. To navigate our lives, achieve balance and assess ourselves honestly, we should seek out advice from mentors, students and friends, helping us bring our greatness to the fore and recognise our profound importance. ◆ Rebbetzin Lisa Levene serves Belmont United Synagogue
BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS Former Royal Marine Paul “Pen” Farthing (pictured) rescued 150 animals from Afghanistan and brought them to Britain. What does the Torah say about this? We are in the run-up to the Day of Atonement, when we try to remember our duties to the Almighty, after having hopefully fixed our feelings in our duties to each other. The rabbis talk about different kinds of mitzvot. There are mitzvot that are between man and man, and between man and God, but what about those concerning animal life? There is no concept in Judaism of animal rights. We mortal human beings are nonetheless considered to be masters of the universe, and as such the animals of creation are supposed to serve us. This is the blessing that was given to Noah and his children, upon their being
permitted to eat meat. However, we are supposed to treat all of creation with respect and we are expected to care for it and not to destroy it. Indeed, all human beings are taught not to cause unnecessary distress to animals. The Torah is replete with commandments concerning having regard to the feelings of animals, including not to ignore animals that are wandering and not to pass by an
animal that has collapsed under its load or in distress. When we see the effort to save the lives of dogs and cats made by former Royal Marine Paul “Pen” Farthing to bring them over from Afghanistan we can feel some sympathy, particularly those of us who have pets, and feel they are very much part of our family. It is nonetheless essential to remember that animals are not human and that human life takes precedence over all other forms of life. Our stewardship means we should consider all life sacred, and this includes the treatment of animals, while remembering that our prime responsibility is to human life; saving one human is infinitely preferable to the loss of hundreds of our furry friends. ◆ Rabbi Zvi Solomons serves JCoB, the Jewish Community of Berkshire in Reading

The Bible Says What? ‘God did not abandon Israel – Israel abandoned God’ BY RABBI AARON GOLDSTEIN “I will greatly rejoice in the Eternal One, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for God has clothed me with the garments of salvation, God has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels…” (Isaiah 61:10-11). This is the perfect way to end what have been a series of seven Haftarot of consolation following Tisha B’Av, the Jewish fast day for lamentation and mourning. The majority of this passage was written while the leadership of the Israelites were in Babylonian exile. It is probable that King Cyrus of Persia had defeated the Babylonians and already there were signs the exiles would be allowed to return to their land and their people. In this passage, God has provided fine clothing and the marital language of God’s relationship with Israel has resumed. But
the final verbs are in the future tense, redemption or conquest of the land is still yet to come. In accord with the Deuteronomic theology, there is the notion God will act, but only once the people act first. This theology worked to explain that God had not been defeated or disappeared when the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem on earth. God had not abandoned Israel – Israel had abandoned God by not observing the mitzvot. A meaningful return to the loving relationship and the land is assured by Israel returning to God and following God’s mitzvot. Today, this passage – and other ones in our Torah – are the motivation for us to never stay completely still. They acknowledge moments of stagnation, of rest, even times when we slide backwards. Yet our orientation is forward, with hope.

Progressively Speaking We can see the light even as the days darken BY RABBI DEBORAH BLAUSTEN Each night as we count down towards Rosh Hashanah and now Yom Kippur, it has become progressively darker. The nights and shorter days at the start of a chilly September felt like a mirror of the news around us. Rising cases of the Delta variant, flooding and forest fires, and the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan. It seemed rather incongruous to talk of renewal at a time of such uncertainty and when hope felt quite so fragile. The Talmud explains that Jews use a lunar calendar while other civilisations use a solar calendar. It’s tempting to make a bleak joke about Jews orienting ourselves around darkness, but it’s not just a joke – rather it is exactly in this image of renewal in darkness that our teachers across the generations have found meaning. Rav Soloveitchik taught that Jews celebrate renewal not when we can see it, but when it’s barely visible. We don’t rejoice in the light we
can see, but when we begin a new month or year we understand and nurture the promise of future light. We allow ourselves to be caught up in the cyclical nature of light and dark, and the hope embedded within it. It’s always darkest right before dawn. Just as nature, so too human experience; we move between moments of dazzling light and moments of all enveloping darkness. Our ancestors gathered for festivals in darkness, and kindled lights together. I find the image of renewal in the dark to be orientating, because although September begins so many new beginnings, a new school year,
new jobs, a new Jewish year, I think we are perhaps even more aware than last year that the promise of a return to the world as we knew it has not materialised in the way we had hoped. Despite the immense positivity that vaccines represent, the roaring 2020s still feel a bit far in the distance, and in the light of this middle moon we can see so much of the suffering in our world. It might make us feel ambivalent about the new year, because instead of renewal it reminds us that things aren’t quite right yet. And yet, there’s something so essential about our Judaism that seeks to bring light, to build in moments when we need hope but can’t yet see it, and to gift ourselves the opportunity to feel feelings and be part of something we have missed. ◆ Rabbi Deborah Blausten serves Finchley Reform Synagogue

RICHDALE CONSULTANTS LTD
Dear Jacob I’m launching a business as a specialist payment service provider and my research shows how vital compliance will be. What should I consider when selecting a compliance consultant? Jonathan Dear Jonathan Compliance forms the core of any business providing financial services, and your business decisions may rely heavily on the approach taken by the compliance consultant. When choosing a consultant, you need to consider whether their service method will relieve you of the majority of the compliance load, leaving
DOV NEWMARK ALIYAH ADVISER
NEFESH B’NEFESH Dear Dov Do you know when nonIsraelis will be able to enter Israel so I can make aliyah? Tim Dear Tim I have some great news for you: you do not need to wait for the skies to open! When you have been approved for aliyag by The Jewish Agency for Israel, you will receive an aliyah visa in your UK passport that will allow you entry
into the country. Upon your arrival, your aliyah visa will be stamped & you will receive a Teudat Zehut (Israeli ID card) which formalises your aliyah and gives you Israeli citizenship. After 90 days from your date of aliyah, you will be able to apply for an Israeli passport. This will allow you to travel in and out of the country should you so wish. There are ways of shortening that 90-day period and I would be happy to discuss that further with you, should it be relevant. At the moment, everyone is still required to selfisolate for two weeks on arrival,
you free to focus on managing and developing your business. At the same time, you should seek a consultant who works in tandem with you, who bears the weight of the practical compliance while ensuring you receive sufficient tutelage and guidance to understand the purpose, ramifications and implementation of compliance for your business. At Richdale, we encourage firms to work towards an understanding of the regulations, while automating the processes where possible. You should also consider a reactive versus proactive approach: do you prefer to be left undisturbed by your compliance support, but then have to put your compliance in order for providers or regulator enquiries, or do you prefer an approach such as the one offered by Richdale, where good practice is implemented from the outset without being forced to play catch-up with the regulator?
(this can be shortened to seven days with two negative PCR tests) although this will depend on how the UK is perceived by Israel at the time of your aliyah. Please note that the application process is taking longer these days because of the pandemic, so I would strongly suggest you open a file and get the wheels in motion. To contact The Jewish Agency you can email them gci-en@jafi.org or call them on 0800 0852105. May I take this opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy new year. Next Rosh Hashanah, may you be in Israel as an Israeli!
