Redbridge Labour Group has voted to remove the whip from local councilllor Khaled Noor after a complaint was upheld over his “intimidatory tone” towards the chair of a meeting during a rant that one witness described as being “offensive, misogynistic, antisemitic and thereby unacceptable”. Following Tuesday evening’s meeting a Redbridge Labour spokesperson confirmed the whip had been withdrawn from Noor after it was agreed his behaviour “has fallen below the high standard we expect of our members.” The Labour Group stressed that this form of action was taken against councillors in “exceptional circumstances” and also that the sanction had been approved by elected officials from diverse backgrounds. Noor, who represents the Barkingside ward, has denied claims of antisemitism and has sug-

gested that he was in fact the victim of Islamophobia and bullying. The decision to oust Noor followed a report conducted the local chief whip which had concluded his conduct at the January 2021 Group Meeting, which was chaired by Jewish councillor Judith Garfield, was found to be “in serious breach of Labour Group Standing Orders.” It is understood that Group Chair Cllr Garfield’s complaint had accused Noor of speaking to her “inan intimidatory tone and falsely accused her of “only supporting action against antisemitism and not other forms of bigotry.” Following Tuesday’s meeting, aRedbridge Labour spokesperson confirmed:”The whip has been withdrawn from Cllr Noor following a number of separate incidents where his behaviour has fallen below the high standard we expect of our members.”

Four Labour MPs chosen as candidates under former leader Jeremy Corbyn could face reselection battles ahead of the next general election, Jewish News can exclusively reveal. New guidelines on selection of candidates over the next six months are set to be agreed by Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC). Party sources named Coventry South MP Zarah Sultana and shadow transport minister and MP for Ilford South Sam Tarry as being at risk of so-called trigger ballots, in which they are forced to contest the right to stand as a candidate with other challengers. Labour insiders also claimed that Ian Byrne, MP for Liverpool West Derby, and Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse, were vulnerable to similar selection contests fought in their local parties.

All four MPs had previously backed calls for open selection contests to be held for all Labour MPs when Corbyn was still leader of the party. Now, as Labour steps up its preparations for a possible general election as early as spring 2023, all sitting MPs will be asked whether they intend to re-stand or retire. All Labour MPs wishing to stand again as candidates will then require the backing of at least 50 percent of both local party and affiliated branches – meaning local parties can “trigger” selection contests if a majority choose to do so. Jewish News has learned of growing frustration with Sultana among many members of her constituency Labour party – with her views on the police, the government’s Prevent counter-extremism policy, and her obsession with foreign policy issues viewed by many activists as ‘out of sync’ with the mood amongst the electorate. Sultana was never the overwhelming favourite of local mem-

bers: the Corbyn leadership placed her on a shortlist of just two possible candidates to fight the 2019 election in the seat, leaving other party members unable to stand. Elected with a majority of just over 400, in a seat where Labour previously held an 8,000 majority – and having apologised for earlier social media posts in which she said she would celebrate the deaths of Tony Blair and Benjamin Netanyahu – Sultana has put further noses out of joint with her conduct since. The 28-year-old attracted further criticism last weekend after photos of her alongside anti-police activists holding placards labelling officers ‘bastards’ and ‘assassins’ were published by the Mail on Sunday. Apologising for failing to spot the anti-police placards, Sultana said these did not represent her own views. Tarry, who was once Corbyn’s campaign director, has also attracted criticism from local members over his response to issues such as floods in the constituency last year.

In Liverpool, Ian Byrne is still facing a struggle to win over many in his local party – having been narrowly selected for the safe seat ahead of the 2019 election, with the backing of Momentum and former shadow chancellor John McDonnell. Apsana Begum is facing issues with winning over a section of her local party. In 2019 police had to be called over claims that many rankand-file party members could not get into the meeting to vote. The situation involving Corbyn himself remains unresolved. He is currently an independent MP in

Islington North as a result of his suspension over his response to the EHRC antisemitism report. A failure to issue a full apology to the Jewish community and to the chief whip for his actions over the report could leave Labour installing a new candidate to fight the seat. Meanwhile, party sources believe that Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, may be ready to announce her retirement ahead of the next election. Jewish News has contacted Sultana, Tarry, Byrne, Begum and Abbott for comment.

ENVOY FLEES LSE AMID THREAT TO ‘SMASH’ CAR A respected London university has warned any students involved in threatening behaviour towards the Israeli ambassador this week will face disciplinary action, writes Jack Mendel. Footage posted online yesterday showed Tzipi Hotovely being rushed away in a car as proPalestine demonstrators opposed her speaking at the London School of Economics, with one activist account threatening to “smash” her car windows. In a statement to Jewish News, the LSE said it values free speech but it “must be in a mutually respectful manner. Intimidation or threats of violence are completely unacceptable.” A spokesperson added: “We are aware of threats of violence made on social media around this event. Any LSE students identified as being involved in making such threats will face disciplinary action.” Hotovely was appearing at an event hosted by the LSE Debate Society, which shared a statement before the event to encourage “discourse” on the Israel-Palestine conflict. The society, which has invited Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, to speak next week, said the topic “requires challenging the positions of the people involved and ensuring a diversity of opinions and perspectives”. It added that it was created “to allow students to engage with influential policymakers”. The incident was condemned by education secretary Nadhim Zahawi as “deeply disturbing”. He offered an apology to the envoy. Lisa Nandy, Labour’s shadow foreign secretary, said: “The appalling treatment of Israeli Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely is completely unac-

ceptable. There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right and any attempt to intimidate those we disagree with should never be tolerated.” On Instagram an account called ‘LSE Class War’ shared posts saying they were “storming in” to the event. “Let’s make her shake. F*** the old bill [police]”, they wrote. Another post said: “Whoever smashes the ambassador car window (Lincoln’s Inn Field), gets pints. Let’s f****** frighten her.” Elsewhere, leaders of Stamford Hill’s Jewish medical emergency service Hatzola have criticised a recent visit to the area by Hotovely. In a statement in Hebrew, Rabbi Shalom Weiss, rabbi of Hatzola, and Rabbi Eliezer Benedikt claimed that the envoy’s stop at Hatzola had gone ahead without the permission of its leaders. The statement stressed the ambassador’s “ways and ideas are not our own”.

Anger was expressed across the Jewish community this week at the prime minister and his party’s MPs who supported the botched attempt to save the political career of Owen Paterson. Parliamentarians in constituencies with large Jewish populations – including Finchley and Golders Green’s Mike Freer and Chipping Barnet’s Theresa Villiers – received emails and letters from voters, many of whom are Jewish, asking them to explain their actions in the lobbying scandal. One senior communal figure also said they were “surprised and disappointed” to see the name of Harlow MP Robert Halfon high up on the list of supporters of an amendment attempting to block the suspension of senior backbencher Paterson over a serious breach of lobbying rules. A Conservative source confirmed: “It’s fair to say Jewish voters have made their feelings clear on the whole Paterson affair. You’d be hard pressed to find one person with anything positive to say.” Paterson was found by the parliamentary standards committee to have lobbied on behalf of healthcare company Randox, which paid him £100, 000 a year in return. Meanwhile, Hendon MP Matthew Offord was praised by several voters after it emerged that he was one of 13 Tory MPs to defy the whip and vote against the amendment that has sparked a new ‘sleaze’ scandal. Another to voice anger at Paterson’s conduct was Bury South MP Christian Wakeford, a leading Conservative Friends of Israel supporter, who reportedly swore at the disgraced former MP when their paths crossed in Westminster. Defending his decision to back last week’s amendment, Freer replied to one constituent, saying of the Commons standards committee: “I do not believe it is right that one person has the

ability to judge and determine guilt without the right of independent appeal. Nor that a determination of guilt should be made and communicated before an MP has had the ability to submit evidence and have witness testimony heard.” In Chipping Barnet, former minister Villiers also received complaints about her actions. MP Robert Halfon, who is Jewish, told Your Harlow newspaper this week that he “regrets” voting to block Paterson’s suspension. Last Wednesday, Tory MPs blocked the standards committee’s recommendation that Paterson be suspended for 30 days by instead calling for an overhaul of the standards watchdog. They initially had the backing of No 10, but Downing Street reversed its decision after a backlash by opposition MPs and some Conservatives. Paterson then resigned as MP for North Shropshire, saying he wanted a life “outside the cruel world of politics”.

Labour expels JVL officer Jewish Voice For Labour (JVL)’s political officer has been expelled from the party over his support for a banned group that consistently downplayed and antisemitism allegations, writes Lee Harpin. Graham Bash, a long-time ally of Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell and a member of South Thanet constituency Labour Party, confirmed that he had received notification of his auto-exclusion because of his support for the proscribed group Labour Against The Witchhunt.

Criticising the decision to expel another one of its officials, JVL, which was set up to defend former leader Corbyn against antisemitism charges, said Bash, who has the right of appeal against his expulsion, “has been excluded for doing something that was perfectly legal at the time – supporting (whatever that means) an organisation”. In July, Labour’s ruling national executive committee voted to proscribe four groups, including Labour Against The

Witchhunt, as part of a wider move to tackle antisemitism. Former shadow chancellor McDonnell tweeted: “I’ve known Graham Bash for over 40 years. He is one of the finest socialists I have met.” But Bash, who is Jewish, has a lengthy history of playing down antisemitism allegations in Labour – including his involvement with a counter-demonstration held on the day of the Enough Is Enough demonstration in July 2019.

Member for Reading West (Alok Sharma), the minister for corporate social responsibility, the secretary of state for international trade and the chief secretary to the Treasury.” The 77 year-old political veteran ended her point by asking: “Is this right?” SNP MP Pete Wishart, who had allowed Hodge to intervene as he spoke to the Commons, branded her comments on Russian funding as “spot on”, adding: “The way donations have been going into the Tory party needs to be properly investigated.” Hodge, who led the fight against Jeremy Corbyn’s failure on antisemitism, has been at the centre of the pushing of claims of ‘sleaze’ around the ruling Conservatives and prime minister Boris Johnson. In April, she urged the parliamentary commissioner for standards, Kathryn Stone, to investigate whether Johnson had breached the MPs’ code of conduct over alleged donations linked to the flat renovation. “Boris Johnson’s complete disregard for the rules cannot go unchecked. Any cronyism, sleaze or rule-breaking on his part must be fully investigated,” Hodge tweeted. Hodge, a former chair of the Public Accounts Committee, expressed concern that the UK was not offering sufficient support to dissident Alexei Navalny who is back in prison following his return to Russia from exile in Germany. Jewish News has approached the Conservative Party for comment over donations from wealthy Russians to the party and to ministers.

95 universities now signed up to IHRA Nearly 100 universities have now adopted an internationally recognised definition of antisemitism following pressure from ministers, according to the higher education watchdog. The number of colleges, universities and other higher education providers who have signed up to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism has surged over the past year. A total of 216 higher education institutions in England, which includes 95 universities, have signed up, an Office for Students (OfS) report shows. In September 2020, only 28 universities had confirmed they had adopted the definition, according to research by the Union of Jewish Students. The rise comes after universities were told they could have their funding cut if they refused to adopt the definition. colleges to acknowledge the importance of the definition and the benefits of using it in practice.” A spokesperson for Universities UK said: “We support and encourage universities to do all they can to tackle antisemitism, which is as unacceptable on campus as it is in any walk of life. This includes considering adoption of the IHRA definition, whilst also recognising their duty to promote freedom of speech within the law.”

80 OAKS FOR AJR’S 80 MIGHTY YEARS The first of 80 native oaks was planted this week to mark the 80th anniversary of the Association of Jewish Refugees. The groundbreaking – literally – moment in the 80 Trees for 80 Years project was at Lochside Park in Castle Douglas, Scotland, chosen for its proximity to Ernespie House, where many Jewish child refugees were evacuated during the Second World War. The tree was sponsored by Flora Selwyn, a Jewish refugee who settled in Scotland, in memory of her parents, Lily and Heinrich Schmerling. Flora said: “In 1938 our flat in Vienna was ransacked by the Gestapo, who took my father forcibly to Buchenwald. My mother, brother Erwin and me, aged four, fled by train to Switzerland. “Fortunately, we were eventually able to reach sanctuary in the UK.” Flora’s father escaped to Palestine and the family was reunited 10 years later. Eighty native oaks will be planted around Britain in

honour of people and places that symbolise the contribution to British life made by those who fled Nazi Europe. Planted at the roots of each tree will be time capsule, telling a refugee’s story. AJR chief executive Michael Newman said the project enabled the AJR to “give back to and create a living legacy within the country that became home to the Jewish refugees. “We hope these 80 special trees will be appreciated by future generations and provide natural habitats for other native species for many decades to come.”

‘Cool’ Kate opens Holocaust gallery The Duchess of Cambridge was reunited with Holocaust survivors Yvonne Bernstein and Steven Frank at an exhibition of photographs of survivors and refugees – including two she took of the pair as part of a Jewish News project (pictured far right). The future Queen chatted with the survivors at the Imperial War Museum, nearly two years after she photographed them to kick off an initiative to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Since then, a dozen leading photographers around the country have captured images of some of Britain’s last survivors, often alongside their children and grandchildren, for the exhibit. The exhibition – designed the celebrate those who built new lives in the UK – was brought to life by a partnership between this newspaper, The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, Royal Photographic Society, Dangoor Education and IWM, where it will remain until January when it will goe on a national tour.

Among those Kate met was Yvonne and Steven, who she had previously described as two of the most “life-affirming people she’s ever met”. While Covid precautions meant she kept a one metre distance from most, she couldn’t help but hug a thrilled Steven. The 86-yearold survivor of several camps, who was photographed with his granddaughters Maggie and Trixie by the Duchess in the style of Vermeer, told Jewish News: “I’ve never been hugged by a future Queen before. She was so warm and, like two years ago, wanted to hear my story.” Trixie, 15, added: “My grandpa tells his story in local schools but the Duchess being here means more people will know what happened. She was so cool.” For a beaming Yvonne, who had been a hidden child in France and was accompanied by granddaughter Chloe, the reunion was the very first time she’d been out beside for basic food shopping since the start of the pandemic. JLC CHAIR GOLDSTEIN RESIGNS Jonathan Goldstein has resigned as chair of the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC). The lawyer, who took over the key communal role from Sir Mick Davis in 2017, said it had been a privilege to chair the JLC and he was proud of what it had done. He said: “I have enjoyed being an active and present chair. Recent events and pressures have made it impossible for me to be as present as I would want to be and as the JLC needs me to be.” The decision to step down had been “painful but necessary”, he said, adding: “I am incredibly proud of my achieve-

Most Britons ‘ignorant of 6m’ Most British people do not know how many Jews died in the Holocaust, according to a survey that exposes “profound gaps” in knowledge of recent history, writes Michael Daventry. A majority are unaware that six million Jews were killed and that a sizeable minority believe the true figure is below two million. Few people could name more than one Nazi concentration camp or ghetto and that most were unaware of the Kindertransport, the survey found. Most participants could identify Auschwitz, but just 14 percent could name another camp or ghetto. The survey, commissioned by the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, was released to mark the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht. Greg Schneider, of the Claims Conference, said: “It is particularly disappointing to find that the Kindertransport, an important historic chapter that reflected the best of humanity and should serve of a beacon of hope in the darkest of times, is being forgotten.” Asked “What was the Kindertransport?”, more than threequarters of UK respondents gave an incorrect answer or said they did not know. Just 24 percent correctly identified it as a British

programme to rescue Jewish children from Nazi Germany before the outbreak of war. Matthew Bronfman, who oversaw the survey for the Claims Conference, said that although the survey revealed most people British had a general understanding of the Holocaust and whom it targeted, there were some significant gaps. “I think it’s really important that they know because numbers do put things into perspective,” he told Jewish News. “This was the greatest genocide in the history of the world and people need to understand that and [it happened] for no particular reason other than they were Jewish.” Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Education Trust, said: “The accuracy of history does matter. There is more work to do, but I just believe that just means we have to continue teaching the specific nature of the Holocaust.” The Claims Conference survey also revealed most Britons did not know when the UK Government became aware that Jews were being murdered in their millions, or how it reacted when it found out. Nearly a third (32 percent) of British participants

A group bringing together business leaders from the Jewish and Asian communities has scooped a major award. The Asian-Jewish Business Network (AJBN) was recognised for ‘excellence in diversity and inclusion’ at the Signature Awards, held for the first time in London last week. Despite launching just three months before the start of the pandemic, the network’s members’ club has tripled in size during the past 18

months, pivoting to online events and launching a magazine and a digital women’s network. The award comes only a week before the AJBN’s flagship annual event at Lord’s Cricket Ground, which is expected to attract more than 500 people. “It was humbling to be recognised for the work we do for both the Asian and Jewish communities,” said Russell Bahar, who founded the group with Jewish News’ Justin Cohen.

A rare hearing of Barnet’s licensing sub-committee is due to be held today to consider continued plans by a Jewish boys’ school in Hendon to let out its hall for simchas and communal events. Residents of Danescroft Avenue, a cul-de-sac in Hendon, have complained that since June the Talmud Torah Tiferes Shlomo school, which occupies the former Hendon Reform Synagogue, has been renting out its hall for “impossibly noisy” events, including weddings, with large numbers of guests. One neighbour told Jewish News they had not issue with the school. “The problem is the letting of the hall, which the school

say brings it extra revenue — but they have admitted themselves that it is not possible to use the hall without disruption.” Neighbours have spoken of “massive disturbances” when the hall is used, with catering lorries, huge amounts of traffic, and noise from music and guests standing outside until the early hours. Initially, after a petition

by residents in June, an Unlawful Certificate was issued by Barnet relating to events with more than 75 guests. But because this was a civil rather than criminal matter, council planners appeared reluctant to enforce this ruling, so it was ignored by council and hall owners alike. The residents then approached the council’s licensing department.

In response, the school applied for Temporary Event Notices, or TENs, one-off licences that allow sale of alcohol and provision of entertainment without having to apply for a full premises licence. After residents provided photos and video to the council’s Environmental Noise and Nuisance unit., the council decided to object to the next application for a TEN, understood to be for an event on 20 November. Barnet Council said the school’s use of TENs in the past led to “noise complaints from neighbours. Environmental Health say the school has not engaged with them about this and possible mitigations. This is why it’s at a hearing”. Jewish News has asked the school for comment.

Campaigner Jonny Benjamin is at the forefront of a new project aimed at young people – a directory of approved and vetted mental health provisions for schools and colleges in Britain. Benjamin and Louisa Rose, who is also Jewish, set up a charity called Beyond in 2018, in response to the growing number of younger people with mental health issues. It is estimated that one-in-six children aged between five and 16 now has a diagnosable mental health problem — and yet according to Mental Health UK, “75 percent of young people are currently not receiving any treatment when suicide remains the biggest killer of young people in the UK”. The aim of Beyond is to give grants for mental health support to young people, their families and teachers in schools. This week Beyond, of which Rose is chief executive, launches the first national database of approved and vetted mental health and wellbeing provisions for schools. It has been developed, the pair say,

“to help relieve teachers of some of the overwhelming pressure placed on them, and stop a young person’s mental health declining more... due to unacceptably long waiting lists”. In February, Beyond’s Youth Board is producing an ambitious youth mental health festival for schools and colleges. Last year’s festival ran in 1,200 schools nationally and reached more than half a million children, parents and teachers. The Youth Board hopes to increase its reach, with classes and lesson plans on resilience, mindfulness and mental health wellbeing, hosted by specialists.

‘Bolt from blue’ to read aunt’s name on memorial A retired doctor from Finchley was “astonished” to see the name of his late aunt in a picture of a Dutch memorial to Jews murdered in the Holocaust, writes Jenni Frazer. Dr Joachim Frank spotted the photo in last week’s Jewish News. The memorial, in Amsterdam, consists of a series of bricks to commemorate the 102,000 Dutch victims. Each brick is inscribed with a name, date of birth and age. Betty Frank, who was 25 when she was transported first to the Dutch camp of Westerbork and then to Sobibor,

where she was murdered, was the youngest of three children, only one of whom, Frank’s uncle, survived the Holocaust. She was a secretary in the Jewish Hospital in Amsterdam. Frank, who was born in 1938, survived the war in hiding with his mother. His father, Roelof, also a doctor, served first in the Dutch army and then in the British forces, before dying in the far East when his ship was torpedoed by the Japanese in 1942. Frank, who emigrated to South Africa with his mother after the war said: “My grand-

parents never got over the deaths of two of their three children. “It really came as a bolt from the blue to see my aunt’s name on the memorial in the newspaper.”

Israeli bookshops boycott Rooney Two big Israeli bookstore chains have stopped selling Sally Rooney’s books after the author said she would not allow a Hebrew translation of her latest work. Tzomet Sefarim and Steimatzky, which operate about 200 stores between them, said her previous novels would be removed from their shelves and websites.

The bestselling author said last month she was withholding Hebrew translation rights for her latest novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You. She said she was looking for a publisher that distanced itself from what she termed “apartheid against Palestinians”. Her previous two books had been translated by the Israeli firm Modan.

Her decision was praised by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and strongly criticised by Israel advocates. Rooney said: “If I can find a way to sell [the Hebrew-language translation rights to my new novel] that is compliant with BDS guidelines I will be proud to do so.”

‘Pay up to fight antisemitism’

The European Jewish Congress has backed a report saying all countries should commit a fixed annual proportion of 0.02 percent of their gross domestic product to the fight against antisemitism. Based on the UK government’s most recent economic figures, this would equate to around £460 million from the Treasury every year, roughly 30 times more than it spends. It follows the publication this week of a three-year study, presented to the Republic of Austria on Tuesday, in which the continent’s most senior Jewish leaders also called for more laws to make antisemitism illegal across Europe, and for these laws to be embedded within states’ constitutions. In An End to Antisemitism, academics argue the fight against Jew-hatred by governments should include a raft of measures, saying: “Each country should fund the fight… with at least in excess of 0.02 percent of its [GDP] annually.”

NAZANIN’S HUSBAND ASKS JEWS FOR HELP The husband of Iranian hostage Nazanin ZaghariRatcliffe, has asked the Jewish community to lend its backing to the campaign to free his wife, writes Jenni Frazer. On Monday, Richard Ratcliffe was 16 days into a lifethreatening hunger strike in London. He told Jewish News that he believed Anglo-Jewry was only too aware of what he called “hostage diplomacy” and the way that some states used “ordinary people” in that regard. “Other states are watching and copying this behaviour, and it is a threat to the world”, he said. He felt the Jewish community “was alive to the behaviour of illiberal states and their danger”. Three days previously — day 13 of his strike – Ratcliffe was visibly suffering, sitting swathed in woollen hats, scarves and gloves, in a makeshift “camp” opposite the Foreign Office in Whitehall. Behind him were thin pop-up tents and blankets – little defence against the increasingly cold weather. His wife, 44, has served five years in an Iranian prison and may now face a further year

behind bars in Tehran, though at present she is at her parents’ home in the capital. She was arrested at Tehran Airport in 2016 and imprisoned after being found guilty of “plotting to overthrow the Iranian government” and spying, charges which she has consistently and vehemently denied. Ratcliffe and his family maintain that his wife is being held as ransom for £450 million, money owed by the British government to Iran over a cancelled arms deal when the Shah fell from power in 1979.

Nazanin, who was working as a project manager for Reuters news agency when she was seized, has joint British and Iranian nationality. Two of his high-profile supporters have been the TV presenters Claudia Winkleman and Victoria Coren Mitchell, both of whom are Jewish, and who have visited him twice. Police have made a second arrest over the Nazi swastika daubings sprayed near Belsize Square synagogue. At a meeting with communal leaders, Metropolitan Police officials confirmed that they had arrested a new suspect. Sources told Jewish News that police seemed confident they had detained the person responsible for spraying nine swastika symbols in the north London area this month after a first suspect was released without charge.

World ORT honours ‘dedicated’ teacher

An educator at the Sir Manasseh Meyer International School (SMMIS) in Singapore has been named World ORT’s Teacher of the Year for 2021. Maire Clapham’s “dedication and commitment to her students” was celebrated at an online live final on Tuesday. She said: “The last couple of years has been such a challenging time, but there have been so many opportunities too.”

Tributes to ‘over-the-top’ TV and radio star Lionel Blair Tributes have poured in for showbusiness veteran Lionel Blair following his death last week aged 92. In a career spanning seven decades, the Jewish performer worked on television as an actor, tap dancer, presenter and choreographer. In recent years, he made appearances on TV shows Celebrity Big Brother and The Real Marigold Hotel. He married Susan Davis in 1967 and couple share three children. Born Henry Lionel Ogus in Montreal, Quebec, his parents were Myer Ogus, who worked as a barber, and Debora “Della” Greenbaum. He grew up in Stamford Hill and was evacuated to Oxford when war broke out, with his mother and sister Joyce. The family was Jewish but not observant and their habit of eating bacon was frowned on by the neighbours. Blair was 13 when his father died following surgery on a hernia and duodenal ulcer. “It changed everything,” Blair said. “It was the first time I’d ever thought, ‘I’m never going to see him again.’ It was so awful and I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a loss like it.” Blair said he had to grow up “artificially fast” following the death of his father, and he was already making a name for himself as an actor. However, then came the death of his mother, leaving him an orphan. His sister Joyce then got married, meaning Blair was on his own. Throughout his showbiz career, Blair has been a dancer, choreographer, TV presenter, director and actor – covering the entire sphere of the business. Even in his later years, he maintained a healthy tan and his famous bouffant hairstyle. His cheerful demeanour and enthusiastic manner led to jokes that he was gay, and his sexuality was a running gag on Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue. Blair said he largely ignored the jibes, but once sent a man to hos-

pital after punching him when he called him a “fairy”. And responding to claims that he could be described as camp, Blair said: “Camp? Really? I prefer ‘flamboyant’ or ‘enthusiastic’. I’ve always been a bit over-the-top.”

Statue to honour Beatles manager

The Beatles’ Jewish manager, credited with ushering the band to global fame and success, is to be memorialised with a statue in Liverpool. Brian Epstein, born on Yom Kippur to a family of Russian and Lithuanian Jewish descent, first discovered The Beatles in 1961 at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. He became the band’s manager in 1962, overseeing the group’s transformation from a scruffy local band to global sensations. Epstein lived his life as both a closeted gay man and a Jew, two identities that made life especially difficult in 1960s England. He died aged 32 of an accidental drug overdose in 1967.

Scottish football fined after fans boo Hatikvah FIFA has fined the Scottish Football Association (SFA) after Scotland supporters booed Israel’s national anthem before last month’s World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park. The Tartan Army were also sanctioned for displaying an inappropriate flag. Jeering of the anthem by a section of Scotland fans was mentioned in the delegate’s report and the SFA has been given a fine of £8,024 by FIFA’s disciplinary committee for that and the flag. The SFA was deemed to have breached FIFA Disciplinary Code Article 16, with world football’s governing body explaining that the fine was due to: “Order and security at matches (disturbance during national anthems, use of objects – flag – to transmit a message that is not appropriate for a sports event).” Moldova, Scotland’s next opponents, also received a fine after a drone caused a disturbance during the national anthems ahead of their match against Austria.

Jewish team plays MK Dons in Youth FA Cup Jewish footballing history was made last week as a London side faced off against MK Dons in the Youth FA Cup. Maccabi London Lions U18 became the first Jewish team to qualify for the national competition’s first round, eventually being defeated by the League One side’s Under-18s outfit 5-0. The game was tighter than the eventual scoreline suggested, however, with the Lions keeping Dons to 2-0 right up until the 75th minute, forcing a number of saves in the early part of the second half. The Dons’ team showed their fitness to net three late goals. Managed by Andy Miller and Steve Gordon, the Lions’ team had numerous travelling supporters at the 30,000 seater stadium, with captain Zack Miller saying the appearance was a “great achievement”. He thanked “the massive support of our fans who came to watch”. “Steve and I have managed this team for more than 10 years and this is the highest level at which the team has competed. We are extremely proud of the squad who caused real problems for MK for much of the game. A great experience for everyone.”

Fine for Erdogan a Jew ‘insult’ A Turkish man has been convicted of insulting president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after calling him a “Jew pretending to be a Muslim” , writes Michael Daventry. Yüksel Üstün was initially jailed after being convicted of breaking a law that makes it a criminal offence to insult the president’s “honour, pride and respectability”. Lawyers for Erdoğan, a pious Muslim, had argued it was “belittling” to describe him as a Jew. The conviction came despite Üstün’s lawyer, Baran Güneş, arguing the remark could not possibly be an insult. “Jews are honoured citizens of this country. It is not a crime to call someone a gypsy or a Jew,”

he told the court, according to Deutsche Welle. But judges initially handed Üstün a 10-month prison term, before reducing the sentence to a 7,000 Turkish lira (£535) fine. Insulting the president is a longstanding criminal offence in Turkey but Erdoğan, who was first elected to the position in 2014, has a reputation for being exceptionally litigious. A study commissioned by the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) in August found he had launched 38,581 cases for defamation in the courts in his first six years in office. Just 1,138 cases had been filed in the previous decade, the study found. It is unclear if Erdoğan was aware of this case.

Quentin Tarantino will auction off seven uncut scenes from his landmark 1994 film Pulp Fiction with help from an Israeli company. The segments will only be viewable to the buyer and come with exclusive commentary by the director, said SCRT Labs, the Israeli development company behind the technology.

The scenes will be sold as NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, a medium for digital artwork that has boomed in popularity in the past year. “I’m excited to be presenting these exclusive scenes to fans.” Tarantino said in a statement. “Secret Network and Secret NFTs provide a whole new world of connecting fans and artists and I’m thrilled to be a part of that.”

US SANCTIONS SPYWARE FIRMS

Two Israeli spyware companies were sanctioned last Wednesday for supplying spyware to foreign governments that the US government accused of using the tools to “threaten the rules-based international order”. NSO Group and Candira, two Israel-based companies, were placed on the list of companies sanctioned by the US Department of Commerce along with two other companies based in Russia and Singapore. The department accused the companies of providing spyware to actors who used it “to maliciously target government officials, journalists, businesspeople, activists, academics and embassy workers”. NSO Group is the creator of Pegasus, a spyware that can take over a target’s mobile phone and collect data from it. The companies can no longer use American technologies, although US customers can still purchase their products.

It will come as a surprise to British Jews that so many of their compatriots know so little about the biggest genocide in human history. We are taught about the Holocaust in abundant detail from a very young age, be it at synagogue or around a Friday night dinner table. Many non-Jews will only encounter the topic for the first time at school, or if they happen upon a particularly highbrow Netflix documentary. That difference is apparent from this week’s Claims Conference survey, which revealed most Britons had a general awareness of the Holocaust – they knew it was a genocide against Jews, for example – but with huge gaps. Most could not correctly say how many people were killed or what exactly the Kindertransport was. It comes at a critical time for Holocaust education, which is rapidly shifting from living history to recorded history. There are fewer survivors still alive with each passing year and fewer still with the strength to tell their tale. That is why it is so important for non-Jewish Britons to better understand what happened in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, and how the UK government responded. As the story of the Holocaust slides out of living memory, it is going to become even harder to tell.

Annexation and antisemitism In October 1995, in a letter to the then Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Yitzhak Rabin, wrote: “Israel and its government is making every effort to protect the lives of Israelis and Jews not only in Israel, but wherever they may be. That is my solemn promise as prime minister.” He was assassinated the next month. The present prime minister of Israel is committed (as was his immediate predecessor) to forced annexation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, notwithstanding that such a policy is held by the UN Security Council and the international community to be a violation of international law. That this consensus is rejected by the Israeli government is immaterial, for we live in a democratic society of which the Israeli government claims to be a member.

WELBY’S COMPARISON WAS BEYOND BELIEF I was not only offended by Archbishop Justin Welby comparing the threat of climate change to the rise of the Nazis, but also very surprised that an educated man such as he would use such an analogy. To compare the effects of global warming with the hatred and systematic destruction of six million Jewish people during the Second World War is beyond belief.

Jonathan Goldstein was among the loudest voices speaking out on the antisemitism that infected the Labour Party. In meetings with the leadership. In the media. At every opportunity. It’s this for which his tenure will be remembered most, as well as the united stand the JLC and the Board took at such a challenging moment. A merger that many feel is needed was a step too far but his organisation has continued to lead on many areas of strategic planning even if events in politics meant this could not always be priority number one. When Sir Mick Davis vacated the JLC hot seat four years ago, few gave anyone other than Goldstein a realistic shot. Now the question of who fills his sizeable shoes is a far more open question. Let the race begin.

One consequence of annexation is a measurable rise in global antisemitism, as the nonJewish community perceives such aggression as a criminal act against a dispossessed, indigenous people who have lived in the region for more than a thousand years. The policy of forced annexation is not only unlawful but repugnant. It should be rejected out of hand. It is no way to build a strong state that is respected by the world.

The hyperbole spouted by so-called social commentators, so quick to put the knife into the Archbishop of Canterbury, was jawdropping. The poor man was clearly scared into apologising for making a rather mild comparison between the rise of Hitler and the end of the world as we know it. Welby is an impressive public figure who has shared moments of profound personal honesty with the public. Manufactured episodes like this will cause him to withdraw out of fear of offending those so eager to be offended.

othing more infuriates the British Jewish community than perceived media bias against Israel. It is seen as feeding the anti-Israel of social media, affecting the views of young people and fuelling the hatred of the agitprop left. Matters were not helped by seeming indifference of successive Benjamin Netanyahu governments to UK media in general and the Jewish media in particular. That is why Naftali Bennett’s opinion article in last week’s Jewish News, on his first visit to the UK as prime minister, was so significant. His praise for the inspiration of British Jews was hugely welcome and he knew how important it was to say so. There has been recognition in the UK over the past year of Israel’s amazing achievements in science, technology and the creative industries. This after years of largely being ignored amid the geopolitical eruptions in its noisy neighbourhood. The pace, skill and sensitivity with which

A budget has passed by the Knesset and record sums have been allocated to Arab mayors in search of a fairer society. The government has recognised the value of propagating a more positive international image. With the assistance of Bicom in the UK and similar organisations across Europe, working with influential journalists, the dialogue is being changed. I was particularly struck by an op-ed by the Financial Times strategic commentator Gideon Rachman. He

pointed to Israel’s well known achievements in high-tech but also argued compellingly that the often ignored Abraham Accords has changed Israel’s self-image. The Gulf nations increasingly have become a safe space for Israeli business and diplomacy. Public global acceptance has long been a struggle for Israel, often the pariah state at the UN. But it will remain elusive unless it can carve out a better relationship with Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. The apartheid and persecution charge made by Human Rights Watch for its treatment of Palestinians in April was a wounding blow. Israel’s efforts to isolate Palestinians through security barriers, separate road systems has made its citizens more secure. But only some kind of economic, social and political parity will heal the wounds and end the allegations of human rights abuses. The Abraham Accords have helped heal the global divide. They will be as dust unless the current coalition can find ways of carving out a better deal with their immediate Abrahamic neighbours. Isn’t that what Abraham himself did more than five millennia ago?

ome Jewish creatives feel they have no choice but to hide their ethnic identity when starting a new job. Others quietly drop friends spouting antisemitic tropes on social media. One actor told me yesterday: “My friends who I have worked with for years, and who consider themselves the good guys, are blind to antisemitism. It broke my heart and I’ve left the arts full time now because of it.” Another said: “I’ve been told to my face by my colleagues that I shouldn’t bring my kids up Jewish as its not fair on them. “The theatre industry collectively rolls their eyes at Jews when we speak out about racism when they, rightly, fall over themselves to stand in solidarity with other marginalised communities.” It is hard to put your head above the parapet when antisemitism remains the acceptable racism; when speaking out against it could lose you work in an insecure industry. No one wants to be seen as the pushy, trouble-making Jew, questioning

people’s assumptions that they are the good guys. The Royal Court Theatre scandal isn’t a one-off.Earlier this year, several Jewish actors resigned from their union, Equity, because of its anti-Zionism – but the incident at the Royal Court was so egregious and so obviously antisemitism – not just antiZionism – that, after the outrage was pointed out on Twitter, it apologised for its, cough, “mistake”. The theatre, which has a history of staging antisemitic work – Perdition and Seven Jewish Children both started there – claimed “unconscious bias” had led to a megalomanic billionaire baddie in its latest production being given the most Jewish of names – Hershel Fink. Now there are certainly a few megalomanic billionaires who do happen to be Jewish; but Elon Musk, upon whom this play is based, isn’t one of them. And when you

watch the show’s trailer about “money, power and land appropriation”, which zooms in on the famously big nose of lead actor Arthur Darvill, you can’t help but think that this is a show that was designed to hone in on the “unconscious bias” of its audience. Or, to be blunt, this was antisemitism encouraging antisemitism. Unconscious bias is a very “progressive” form of racism. It is passive – no one’s fault. But any writer will tell you that the name of a protagonist in a play isn’t generally something you just reach for. There is nothing unconscious about choosing a Jewish name. It was thought about; deliberate. Not only that, but a play is read by dozens, probably hundreds of people before it goes from pen to stage; producers, actors, directors and crew. At a time of rising awareness of racism, how antisemitic does an entire organisation need to be that no one seemed to think this was problematic? Or is it that – as

is rumoured – some people did see it as problematic and their complaints were ignored? In April, the Royal Court signed up to an antiracism organisation called Sour Lemons. There was much patting itself on the back that it would now be even better than before. Its artistic director Vicky Featherstone wrote: “This timely, critical and deep work will help us listen, reflect, learn, grow be challenged, be visibly changed and be held accountable.” But this organisation doesn’t appear to have any Jewish people involved and its founder, Sade Banks, wrote in 2013 that she wanted to “boycott’ companies “to support Palestine”. She added: “There are so many, it makes me feel a bit sick.” Hating Jews is the one racism people are still allowed in progressive circles that tripped over themselves to kneel for Black Lives Matter but happily ignored or even encouraged the antisemitism surrounding Jeremy Corbyn. It is not unconscious but a wilful bias. The Royal Court antisemitism scandal is endemic of an industry, of a section of society, that thinks it is good (good enough to tell the rest of us how to live) but which happily perpetuates the same anti-Jewish tropes as every other antisemite in history.

A new kind of Israeli politics is still possible SIR MICK DAVIS FORMER CHAIR, JLC

hat the current Israeli government’s ability to pass a budget is such a cause for relief – “a day of celebration” prime minister Naftali Bennett called it – is a sign of just how dysfunctional Israeli politics had become. After all, this was the first time since 2018 that an Israeli government had fulfilled this most basic function. The coalition deserves credit for this. The differences between the coalition partners – left, right, Jewish, Arab – are profound. To see them coming together to shelve their differences in the name of the national interest is a triumph for pragmatism. It offers hope that Israel might now have a government capable of ruling in the long-term strategic interests of the country, rather than serving the narrow tactical interests of recent years, lurching from one short-term political crisis to the next. As coalition architect and foreign minister Yair Lapid put it: “The country is no longer on

hold, it’s back in the right place, where it works for the citizens and not the other way around.” For too long, Israel’s deadlocked parliament created stagnation and paralysis, eroding the foundations of democratic governance and proving incapable of addressing the country’s strategic needs. Despite its political mantra, it was unable to make Israel safer from the outside – the new government inherited a region with Iran closer than ever to a bomb – or from within, as demonstrated by the explosion of violence between Jews and Arabs this year. In terms of Israel’s relationship with diaspora Jews, the previous government exported antagonism and polarisation to Jewish communities around the world. Prime minister Bennett, an Orthodox Jew, appears determined to undo this damage, writing last week: “There’s no Orthodox Jew, Conservative Jew, Reform Jew; we’re all Jews.” Compare and contrast. His secular Jewish predecessor in the PM’s office, on the other hand, dusting himself down from Knesset defeat, shared a tweet by Shas leader Aryeh Deri calling on people to pray at the Kotel so “this

holy place will not be desecrated”, a reference to Conservative and Reform egalitarian prayer. Meanwhile, just months after the divisions between Jews and Arabs demonstrated the existential threat of sectarian hatred to Israeli society, Netanyahu was bemoaning the US$9 billion investment in infrastructure for Arab communities as an “Abbas tax”. Never mind he had courted Mansour Abbas’ Islamist Ra’am party and would have “paid up” with alacrity. Again, the contrast is clear. The current government, just by passing a budget, has demonstrated a will to survive, not by inflaming

and manipulating divisions, but by finding compromises and building a consensus between disparate parties. But bigger tests are to come. It remains to be seen, for instance, how a government that includes Meretz and Bennett’s Yamina party can advance action to address the conflict with the Palestinians. Within Israel, the government needs to address major challenges in advancing the cause of employment and inclusion across every constituent sector of Israel’s society. It needs to be innovative in promoting equality and proper investment in communities still affected by prejudice and past trauma, respecting the Jewish character of the state while creating a culture of equality and inclusion for Israel’s minorities. The fact that for the first time, Israel’s ruling coalition includes an Arab party is a welcome start. Much more remains to be done to make clear the state respects its Muslim and Christian minorities. But for now, some optimism is justified. Israel’s new government has passed its first major test. It seems that a new kind of government might just be possible.

Education is our only vaccine against hatred NADHIM ZAHAWI, MP EDUCATION SECRETARY

have just returned from an emotional and humbling visit to Poland, where I joined an international delegation to visit Auschwitz. I stood before those awful gates; I bowed my head in sorrow at the scale of human suffering and came home with a steely resolve. I vowed that whatever else I accomplish in my job as education secretary, I will do my utmost to make sure we stamp out the scourge of antisemitism in our education settings once and for all. The Holocaust remains one of the most significant events in human history. And schools have a duty to make sure the next generation never forgets what happened 76 years ago, so that each one can pledge anew, never again. I am writing with some experience of what it is to live in fear. My family lived in Iraq and had to tiptoe around in a police state where torture and executions were all too common. If my parents had not packed our bags one night and taken flight to this country, who knows whether any of us would have survived. One of the most inspiring speakers at the delegation was the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, Yisrael Meir Lau. We both echoed the wise adage that all that is necessary for evil to flourish is that good men do nothing. But as Rabbi Lau said, silence should not have been an option then and it is not an

ANTISEMITISM, RACISM AND INTOLERANCE STILL EXIST – WE CANNOT LOOK AWAY option now. We must all be brave enough to speak up. The scenes we witnessed in London this week when the Israeli ambassador was intimidated by protestors is unacceptable. It was harassment, not free speech, and it will have deeply shaken Jewish students and the wider community. It is proof that antisemitism, racism and intolerance still exist and we simply cannot look away as this kind of prejudice and extremism go unchecked. I expect all our schools, colleges and universities to challenge any kind of intolerant or bullying behaviour and take a strong stand not just against antisemitism but against all forms of discrimination. My predecessor Gavin Williamson wrote to all our education settings last year reminding them of their responsibilities and urging them to crack down on antisemitism. One of the things he requested was that universities should consider adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. People might wonder what use is a definition, isn’t it just lip service? The answer is no, it isn’t. Antisemitism is not simply a matter of historical debate, but a real and present

danger that exists today and sadly on our campuses. By signing up to a definition of what it is, a university sends a clear signal that it takes these issues seriously. But even more importantly, it enables universities to spot antisemitism and intolerance when they occur and to do something about it quickly. The Office for Students (OfS) has published a list of colleges and universities that have already adopted the definition and I am very pleased to say that considerable progress has been made since last year. A total of 216 higher education institutions in England, which includes 95 universities, have signed up. If universities do not take action to meet expectations for preventing and tackling

harassment during this academic year I may well ask the OfS to explore whether further action can be taken. For school communities, our Educate Against Hate website gives teachers the kind of resources and support they need to challenge radical views and keep children safe, including from online extremist influences. This is bolstered by a network of education officers, who are on hand to give support and guidance to education settings across the country to safeguard any young person who is in danger of becoming radicalised. Sadly, the Holocaust did not end persecution. There are still too many vicious and bloodthirsty conflicts, where a generation mourns mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, who have been lost. Earlier this week was the anniversary of Kristallnacht, when the Nazis destroyed 1,406 synagogues with many burned to the ground and thousands of Jews murdered. Virtually no media outlets reported on it at the time. The world stayed silent. Let’s | not stay silent. Education is the vaccine against antisemitism.

Ten years after her death, Amy Winehouse is making film the focus of Jewish Book Week, writes Brigit Grant

his week, the dress Amy Winehouse wore for her final stage performance sold for £180,000 at an auction of items from her estate. Pairs of her pink ballet slippers went for up to £14,000 and the bag she took to the Brits in 2007 fetched £152,000. That the tragic singer’s belongings can command such sums 10 years after her death is testament to her iconic status and the ongoing fascination with her life and lyrics. Her songs, the words of which are known by heart by so many, have won multiple awards, including an Ivor Novello, and her single, Love is a Losing Game, is studied within the English syllabus at Cambridge University. Now the enduring lyric laureate is the focus of a Jewish Book Week event shaped by the groundbreaking BBC documentary series Arena. Amy Winehouse: The Day She Came To Dingle is one of 60 films of Jewish interest that Arena’s editor, Anthony Wall, came across while looking back at an epic collection of 600 films in the BBC archive. Graciously, Wall then offered some of the incredible films about Jewish iconoclasts such as Art Spiegelman, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Peter Sellers to Jewish Book Week (JBW), organisers of which seized the opportunity to shift the usual panel format discussion away from books and instead use film as the text for the conversation. As producer of this breakaway JBW series, former BBC director Laura Granditer is thrilled to be resurrecting the documentaries. “All the films are gems and really unique, as they reflect not just the artist, but the times in which they were made,” says Laura, who

founded her production company Immediate Films in 2002. “Anthony’s judgment and insight really defined the Arena catalogue and he is curating the JBW series with executive producer Anne Webber, who has been involved with Jewish Book Week all her life. It’s been wonderful working with them.” The film Amy Winehouse: The Day She Came To Dingle captures the singer at the peak of her powers, performing an intimate acoustic gig in St James’ Church, County Kerry, in 2006. The performance for Other Voices Live took place before her album Back to Black went stratospheric and is juxtaposed with Amy talking about music that inspired her. Available to watch before the online panel discussion, Amy Winehouse: Songs, Style & St James’ Church, and for seven days after, Laura thinks the Dingle documentary is the perfect catalyst for conversation between people who were deeply involved in Amy’s musical life and experience. “Robert Elms is chairing the panel and claims to be the first person to have played Amy’s music live on air, because he is a really good friend of her father, Mitch,” explains Laura. “Apparently they met at the Porchester Baths or something like that and Mitch would tell Robert how amazing his daughter was and gave him the CD that ended up on BBC Radio. Then there’s Dale Davis, her bass player and then musical arranger, who remembers being blown away the first time he heard her sing at the Notting Hill Carnival. and Other Voices founder Phillip King.” Last, but most definitely least on the panel is Amy’s close friend and stylist Naomi Parry, who designed the dress that sold on Monday and has just launched Beyond Black, a coffee table tome, which is the ultimate 10th anni-

versary tribute. Full of images of memorabilia, lyric sheets and anecdotes interspersed with personal reflections by friends, colleagues and fans, the book works well as a visual accompaniment to a new exhibition – Amy: Beyond the Stage,, which opens at the Design Museum on 26 November. With her striking image, virtuoso voice and gut-churning lyrics, Amy Winehouse will always be in fashion, but the launch of the book and the upcoming exhibition are timely for Laura. “Amy Winehouse: The Day She Came To Dingle reveals so much and I love the idea of looking at films as artifacts in their own right. To bring these films to Jewish Book Week is such a brilliant concept because it allows us to think about literacy and culture in a broader sense,” she says. This Month In Jewish History... By Jewish News’ historian, Derek Taylor

In November 2005, Harold Pinter (1930-2008) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was too ill to attend the ceremony, but he used his pre-recorded lecture to attack the Americans over Iraq. Born in Hackney to an Eastern European emigrant Jewish tailor, Pinter became one of the most distinguished post-war playwrights with Sleuth, The Birthday Party and The Caretaker among his work, as well as many films, including The Servant and Accident. A controversial character, he was very left-wing, attacking the Israelis over the Palestinians and supporting the peace movement. Pinter was awarded a CBE and made a Companion of Honour in 2002. He died aged 78 from cancer.

Fun fact: Jews have received more than 200 Nobel Prizes out of 900 given. Pro rata to their percentage of the world’s population they should have been awarded two!

BALAGAN, Borehamwood I’m usually a shawarma gal and, as there’s only one way to tackle anything in pitta, I deployed the same strategy to my spicy burger. Picking it up in both hands, I ended up wearing most of the relish. But did I care? Nope; it was delicious. Too busy chewing for rational thought, my husband summed it up as “meaty and lean”. For once he was right. Verdict: Delicious

BURGER BAR, Hendon Fifteen burgers to choose from here and I went for a New Yorker, which comes with all manner of pickles, fried onions and mayo. The pièce de résistance, though, has to be the salami (or vushct, with a ‘v’ as we call it up north). This bad boy came with a knife and my companion advised me to use it, along with the fork. I did, but greedy guts novice that I am, I cut off more than I could chew and ended up with a large piece of the bun stuck to the roof of my mouth. I worked away at it steadily with my tongue, nodding and sighing as my friend told me funny stories about her kids. Finally it budged. Verdict: Tasty

Rothschild. We know the name. We know about the men, but what about the ladies? Sandy Rashty talks to the author of a new book focused on the females of the famous family

efore there was Stella McCartney, there was Miriam Rothschild,” says Natalie Livingstone, author of The Women of Rothschild, which highlights the vital, but untold, contributions made by the ladies in one of history’s most important families. While much has been written about the men behind the successful Jewish family banking empire, less is known about the ladies in their lives. “Miriam was my standout character,” says Natalie (pictured) of the 20th century scientist. “There was nothing she did not do. She was an environmentalist who refused to wear leather. She even wore Wellington boots to Buckingham Palace. “Mental health affected her family. She was very ahead of her time, especially when she used her knowledge to say that mental health should be treated with the same scientific principles as physical health.” Speaking from her home in Notting Hill, Natalie is passionate about every Rothschild woman’s story she has told. Since she began writing her book five years ago, she has been “completely gripped” by the achievements made and influences held by the women in the prominent family – but simultaneously shocked by how little is publicly known about them. “The women were these incredible characters, in a parallel but separate world,” Natalie

Of British peer Jacob Rothschild and writer Hannah Rothschild, Natalie says: “They have been amazing – so supportive.” In fact, Hannah was the first person to read the completed manuscript. Rothschild women used their position to promote the interests of the community, retaining a strong Jewish identity. Of the Rothschild family today, she says: “They are still communal leaders and do a huge amount of charity work. They can be seen in many areas of Jewish philanthropy and they make contributions to Israel.” It is not the first time that Natalie, 44 – who has three daughters aged 18, 15 and five with British property developer Ian Livingstone – has written about influential society women. After her family bought the scandalhit Cliveden House, Natalie delved into the stories of the women whose portraits were hanging on the walls. She went on to write her bestseller, The Mistresses of Cliveden. In July 2015, she invited historian Andrew Roberts to Scott’s in Mayfair for lunch, to thank him for his positive review of that book in the Evening Standard newspaper. It was at this ‘important’ lunch that the idea for this project on the Rothschild women was born, focussing on her interest in women’s stories and Jewish history. Now Natalie, founder and chair of the Cliveden Literary festival, is planning to write a biography on Miriam Rothschild. It would seem that she is on a mission to uncover stories of heroines beyond fairytales. “I don’t think we need to look that hard,” Natalie says. “They are there. We just need to look in different places and in different archives.”

Who can play a JEW ?

With the role of Golda Meir going to Helen Mirren and Ruth Bader-Ginsburg to Felicity Jones, more voices are asking why identity politics in casting doesn’t seem to apply to Jews, writes Amy Spiro

hile promoting her starring role in Amazon Prime’s extraordinarily Jewish show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, actress Rachel Brosnahan was asked a version of the same question over and over again: Are you Jewish? The answer is a decided no, but Brosnahan gamely brushed off the query repeatedly, noting that she was surrounded by Jewish culture growing up in a heavily Jewish suburb of Chicago. When the show premiered in 2017, there was only a little bit of noise about Brosnahan’s lack of Jewish credentials as the star of one of arguably the most Jewish shows ever to hit the small screen. Miriam “Midge” Maisel is not incidentally Jewish; she jokes about Yom Kippur and summers in the Catskills, and gossips in the synagogue pews. But over the past few weeks and months, a growing chorus of voices has once again been speaking out about Jewish representation in Hollywood – at a time when Jewish stories and characters are more prominent than ever on screen. Many are pointing out that while casting directors are becoming more and more careful not to miscast minority roles – relating not just to race but disability, sexual orientation and more – Jewish characters are still regularly, if not predominantly, played

And that it has virtually always been this way. “If you’re interested in this topic and this topic is really meaningful – and I think it is meaningful to the Jewish community – then the conversation has never lapsed,” Malina Saval, a Los Angeles-based features editor for Variety, told The Times of Israel. “People who care about this haven’t stopped talking about it, and I don’t think we will.” The most recent backlash was kicked off by news that Kathryn Hahn will play the legendary comedian Joan Rivers in an upcoming Showtime miniseries. But the practice is commonplace and well-trodden: Helen Mirren was cast as Golda Meir in an upcoming film, Felicity Jones portrayed Ruth Bader-Ginsburg in On the Basis of Sex, Wendi McLendon-Covey played Beverly Goldberg in The Goldbergs and significant chunks of the cast of Jewish-centric shows such as Hunters, The Plot Against America and Transparent are not of Jewish descent. One of the few characters not played by Seth Rogen in the Jewish-steeped and brined film An American Pickle is played by the nonJewish Sarah Snook. While the issue has been discussed for some time, the conversation hit a new peak in recent weeks. Two of the most prominent voices speaking out against the phenomenon are comedians Sarah Silverman and David Baddiel, on their respective sides of the ocean. Silverman, with more than 12 million followers on Twitter alone, reiterated in no uncertain terms last month how she feels on the topic. Today, when “the importance of representation is seen as so essential, and so front and centre, why does ours constantly get breached, even today, in the thick of it?” she asked. “One could argue, for instance, that a gentile playing Joan Rivers correctly would be doing what is actually called ‘Jewface’.” The comedian and actress, whose sister lives in Israel, added: “I think acting is acting and I get that all this identity politics is annoying. I love watching an actor play a character that is wildly different to who they are – but right now, representation f*****g matters. So it has to finally also matter for Jews as well.” The conversation is a nuanced one: Can only Jews play Jewish characters? Isn’t acting a profession based on portraying someone other than yourself? And where does the line get drawn? Could Jewish actors no longer play non-Jewish characters? What the Torah says about: Alec Baldwin

BY RABBI ALEX CHAPPER Everyone has dreams, some more memorable than others. One of the most famous dreams is recorded in the Torah – Jacob sees a ladder reaching up to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it. I am sure Freud would have enjoyed analysing it, and the commentators offer many explanations of it, but let us focus on Jacob’s reaction on awaking from his sleep. As if he has made a remarkable personal discovery, he says: “God was in this place but I did not know it.” What did Jacob suddenly realise that triggered him to make this statement? To appreciate it, we need to view the Sedra as one long account of the difficulties he encounters. He has to escape from his brother Esau; working for Laban, he is tricked into marrying Leah and Rachel; he and his family are pursued by his fatherin-law, who accuses them of theft. Jacob could have been forgiven

for thinking that God, who had protected Abraham and Isaac, had abandoned him. It is only after his dream that he understands that, even in the depths of despair, God is with him – not only then, but at all times. In all circumstances, God’s providence, although not clearly apparent, is constantly at work. Jacob, as we all do, struggles with this concept, but concludes that spirituality is not some ‘way out’ theory, God is not an abstract, at best to be dreamed of in heaven but not to be found on Earth, never to be encountered in our lives. God’s trace is in everything we experience. So in times of national or personal difficulty, upset or uncertainty, Jacob’s legacy is the knowledge that, even if it is not immediately evident, God’s guiding hand is constantly at work, His help is always nearby and we are not alone. ◆ Alex Chapper is Senior Rabbi at Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue

BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS There is a curious idea in the Torah of cities of refuge. The Torah tells us that, on conquering Israel, we are to set up three such cities on either side of the Jordan River, so a person committing accidental manslaughter can flee there. The avenger (a relative of the dead victim) can kill the perpetrator if he leaves the area of the city prior to the death of the High Priest, when they are released from their limitation; but at least they are not executed for murder. It seems to me that Alec Baldwin falls into this kind of category. He did not intend to kill Halyna Hutchins, nor anyone; yet he pointed what he was assured was a ‘cold’ gun at another human being. The carelessness and sloppiness of the arms use on set have come under intense scrutiny. The liability of those dealing with the weapons is likely to be high.

The rule to never point a weapon at another person, even in jest, is a vital one. Baldwin is culpable in that respect. He is an unwilling manslaughterer and, in ancient times, might have taken refuge in one of those cities. I have no doubt the lawyers will shortly be casting damages suits, which is also provided for under the Torah. There has, of course, been a criminal investigation.

The worst aspect is that the victims include the unwitting perpetrator. His conscience must be hurting badly in the wake of the killing. The Bible Says What? ‘Cover up your excrement!’

The importance of memory is vital to our Judaism

BY RABBI NAOMI GOLDMAN If you want evidence that the whole of life is in the Torah, then you can find it in Deuteronomy 23, which explains in some detail how to deal with going to the loo while living a nomadic existence, or in a military camp, largely outdoors and without modern plumbing. “You shall have a place outside the camp where you may relieve yourself. With your weaponry you shall have a spade, and when you have squatted you shall dig a hole with it and cover up your excrement.” (Deut 23:13-14) Toilet talk in the Torah may come as a surprise, but it shouldn’t. Judaism believes in embodied spirituality, that every part of us is holy. There is no part of our lives that isn’t connected to our relationship with God and an ethical life. If we want to be a holy community, we have to sort out our sanitation first. What we do in the toilet counts in other ways, too. With climate

change on our minds after COP26, one way we can protect our forests is to buy toilet rolls made from recycled paper rather than virgin wood pulp. If we are trying to repair our world and fulfill our responsibilities to the environment and to our planet, then we need to look at every aspect of our lives, even the smellier bits. The Torah goes on to say that since God moves about in our camp to protect us, our camp needs to be holy. Nachmanides comments that you shouldn’t pray in sight of excrement – not because there’s anything wrong with it, but because it might lead to negativity in the soul and disturb your concentration. As long as it’s covered properly, that’s okay. Body and soul are always interconnected. Just make sure you flush before you pray!

BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY “Only guard yourself and guard your soul carefully, lest you forget the things your eyes saw and lest these things depart your heart all the days of your life. And you shall make them known to your children and to your children’s children.” (Deuteronomy 4:9.) At 11am this Sunday, a twominute silence will be observed all over the country – including in our Progressive Judaism buildings and offices. Our silence on Remembrance Sunday is a tribute to all those who lost their lives fighting for our country in the two world wars and later conflicts. In a modern age where everything is instant and we are often glued to our phones and devices, this is a rare opportunity when the world will stand still… even if just for those 120 seconds. We should put thoughts of work or worries aside for that small amount of

time and use it as the day is intended – to reflect and remember. In Judaism, there is a very clear sense of the importance of memory. Zachor (‘you shall remember’) is repeated nearly 200 times in our Torah, with both God and the Jewish people commanded to do so. We must remember the Sabbath, remember the covenant, remember the Exodus from Egypt and so on. It is not only our duty to remember ourselves, but also to pass on our knowledge and history to our children and grandchildren. This is especially true when we think of Remembrance Sunday. We now

have with us the last generation of British Jews who will have had any experience of the Second World War. It is vital we hear their testimonies. Not only those who fled here as children, escaping the Nazis, but those were already in Britain and whose parents will have fought in the war. The reason why remembrance is so vital in Judaism is twofold. Firstly it is to learn about what took place but, more importantly, it is to inspire action for the future. As we stand silent on Sunday, it is the ideal time to think about where we have come from and where we are going. And as we remember all those service people, including those from our Jewish community, who have died in war – we ask for their memory to be a blessing and for the day to come when such sacrifices will no longer be needed. ◆ Rabbi Charley Baginsky is CEO of Liberal Judaism

The health insurers are acutely aware that their clients do not want to have to wait weeks for tests, and perhaps months and years for procedures. So reducing premiums has now been addressed by all providers. The insurers provide different hospital lists, but just select the ones you prefer – don’t pay for an unwanted list. The insurers have also introduced an excellent costsaving feature called “guidance” giving reductions to around 30 percent. Here, the insurer provides a selection of consultants and private hospitals rather than you choosing. Some clients now use the six-week option, providing a considerable saving. Here, the default care is with the NHS but only if it can provide

treatment within six weeks. If not, the treatment is performed privately. Other great possibilities include using only private wings of the NHS hospitals, which provide many teaching and leading hospitals. You can also adjust the excess and perhaps choose a plan providing full inpatient and cancer cover, but with no diagnostic tests, or a lesser amount covering both. A warning: Health insurers are not permitted to advise you, whereas we are licensed by the Financial Conduct Authority to do so. Premium prices from insurers and us are the same, encouraging the public to be informed and properly advised. In your case, I suggest using a no-charges adviser like our firm.

Dear Diana The short answer is ‘no, it is not true if you ship with Stephen Morris’. Israeli Customs now use the ‘Global Gateway’ system which allows for everything that you need to do in respect of documentation to be done by email and online. The only reason to go to the port is to be present (if you wish) in the rare event that Customs request an inspection of the container. Generally, we will do the running around for you and you can relax in

your new home and await the arrival of our crew to deliver everything. Incidentally, we do unpack and position furniture and this is included in our doorto-door charges. We will also assemble up to eight items of furniture that we have disassembled in the UK. We will handle other tasks such as unpacking of cartons, hanging of artwork and assembly of IKEA furniture but our office in Israel will quote for this on an ‘ad hoc’ basis once you know what you require.
