And attempts to politicise something that simply shouldn’t be.” A spokesman for the UK-based Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “It is a matter of decency that you never stoop to using the Berlin Holocaust Memorial as some kind of a prop. To incorporate the memorial as the backdrop for a political clip that does not even mention the Holocaust is an insult. A European Jewish body has denied it has threatened to expel Britain’s Board of Deputies in a row over sexual abuse allegations against a rabbi. The European Jewish Congress said it is “completely untrue” to say an expulsion was being considered after the Board suspended its own membership in May. EJC president Ariel Muzicant said last week that it would “consider the mentioned suspension as a withdrawal” if it was not retracted, Haaretz reported. Board president Marie van der Zyl is understood to have demanded an internal investi-

gation into allegations against Rabbi Yaakov Bleich, the EJC’s treasurer. When the request was refused, she announced the Board had suspended its relationship with the EJC. This week there were calls in Britain for the Board to “preempt any move to expel it and leave of its own accord”. Joe Millis, deputy for Bromley Reform Synagogue in south London, said: “The fact that the EJC’s other affiliates haven’t said anything says more about them than the Board’s moral stance.” The detail of the accusations against Bleich are unclear although the Jerusalem Post reported they concerned “sexual abuse of women and children”. Bleich, a Ukrainian chief

rabbi, did not respond to Jewish News requests for comment, but he has previously denied the claims. The EJC refused to comment on allegations against Bleich. It told Jewish News that the Board of Deputies had unilaterally suspended membership “before even having the courtesy to inform other Jewish organisations in Europe, who were their sister affiliates.” A spokesperson said the EJC had written to the Board suggesting an end to its suspension: “It was not a threat but a request for clarification. No other affiliate among our over 40 Jewish umbrella organisations have supported the BOD’s action. The Board of Deputies declined to comment.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and his Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy were criticised this week by a German Jewish group for filming themselves walking through Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial. Tikvah Institut, which tackles antisemitism in Germany, blasted the Labour pair for using footage of themselves walking through the Denkmal for a PR video, saying this was a big no-no in the country. The organisation asked Labour in a tweet: “Why do [you] use the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe as a background for your election campaign video without even mentioning the #Shoah?” Twitter users piled in, calling it “a massive faux pas”, “hideously inappropriate” and “extremely bad taste”, but former Labour MP Ruth Smeeth leapt to Starmer’s defence, saying she thought the criticism was political and unjustified. She said the Labour leader “has a proud record in fighting antisemitism,”

BIBI MEETS CHIEF RABBI IN LONDON Israel’s former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid a flying visit to London this week, meeting communal leaders and politicians — right in the middle of the Conservative process of choosing a new leader to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Netanyahu, now leader of the Opposition, described his trip as an “official” visit, although the embassy was not handling his schedule. The

politician, who was prime minister for 12 years and hopes to resume power after the November elections, arrived in Britain accompanied by his wife Sara. During his visit Netanyahu was the keynote speaker at a Magen David Adom UK breakfast, attended by the MDA Israel director general Eli Bin, and Israel’s ambassador Tzipi Hotovely. He also visited Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis for a private meeting.

Antisemitism was ‘factional weapon’ in Corbyn’s Labour by Jenni Frazer @Jennifrazer

A long-awaited report has concluded antisemitism in Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour was not overstated but has drawn condemnation for suggesting that Jewish Voice for Labour should have had a role in delivering relevant training. The Forde Report, an inquiry into infighting over antisemitism in the Labour Party, was finally made available to the party’s National Executive Committee this week. But the publication, commissioned by Sir Keir Starmer in April 2020 and whose publication has been repeatedly delayed, has evoked criticism from both supporters of Jeremy Corbyn and those opposed to him. Martin Forde QC was asked to undertake his inquiry by Starmer after a leak of an internal Labour document, revealing messages about Corbyn, many of which were said to be from his critics. The leak is still the subject of legal action as the private and personal details of alleged “whistleblowers” were made public. In his 138-page report, Forde found that “some anti-Corbyn elements of the party seized on antisemitism as a way to attack Jeremy Corbyn, and his supporters saw it simply as an attack on the leader and his faction – with both ‘sides’ thus weaponising the issue and failing to recognise the seriousness of antisemitism”. Under Corbyn, the party was “spending more time occupied by factional differences than working collaboratively to demonstrate that the party is an effective opposition”, it concluded. But while activists from the anti-Corbyn faction welcomed Forde’s conclusion that antisemitism was a real and crucial issue – and profoundly “not a scam”, as had often been claimed – there was unhappiness about Forde’s other

damning judgment, relating to Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL), the pro-Corbyn suppot group at odds with the mainstream Jewish community. Forde expressed “disappointment” that JVL had not been allowed to offer Labour members its own training on antisemitism, rather than the affiliate Jewish Labour Movement (JLM), which has been providing antisemitism awareness classes to party members for the past year. Reacting to Forde’s observation about JVL, Adam Langleben, JLM’s general secretary, said with some asperity: “Our training, developed and delivered in conjunction with Labour, following consultation with the community, has been well-received and sought to meet members where they are and give them information

LONDON BLACK CABS COULD SOON BE FARE GAME IN ISRAEL International trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan was due to meet Israel’s ambassador in the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, on Wednesday, to launch an upgraded and enhanced trading relationship between the two countries — which could see Britain’s black taxis on Israeli streets and Scotch whisky flowing in Israeli bars. The revamped Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will build on a relationship already worth £5bn, which supports 6,600 British businesses. Those responsible for the improved FTA — one already exists, brokered in 1995 — describe Britain and Israel as “two of the world’s services superpowers”. Among UK exporters hoping to benefit from the agreement are LEVC, which makes the globally recognisable electric black cabs in Coventry, Tomatin Distillery in Scotland, and Concrete Canvas in Wales. Trevelyan said the benefits of the new agreement were many, telling Jewish News: “We want to unlock new possibilities for UK businesses in one of the world’s fastest growing economies.” The current agreement, she said, was not fit for purpose. “Our current deal, the UKIsrael Trade and Partnership Agreement,

Momentum, said: “The report is a damning indictment of the Labour right’s attempts to destroy from within the Corbyn leadership.” In his response, Corbyn – who declined to give evidence to the inquiry, though he did sign a joint submission – failed to use the word “antisemitism”. Instead, he believed that Forde confirmed that his leadership had consistently been undermined by “powerful groups” in the party and suggested some problems remained. Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said: “The Forde report explicitly regrets that ‘some still deny the existence and the seriousness of the problem’ of antisemitism within Labour. Given this, we are troubled by the author’s later expression that they are ‘disappointed’ that Jewish Voice for Labour – an extreme fringe far-left organisation that has obsessively denied antisemitism within the Labour Party – has not been granted a role in educating Labour members on antisemitism. This is clearly a backward step and the authors of the report need to clarify their position.” Euan Philipps, spokesman for Labour Against Antisemitism, said it was “insulting to suggest Jewish Voice for Labour should be involved in antisemitism education for the party”.  Adam Langleben, page 18

Nazi salute fan banned from ground A football supporter who made a Nazi gesture towards Tottenham fans has been banned from attending matches for three years. Newcastle fan Shay Asher, 24, had previously admitted a charge of racially aggravated harassment during the Premier League game at St James’ Park in October. The former Royal Engineer was fined £200 at Newcastle Magistrates Court when he admitted the offence in April. He returned to the court to oppose a Football Banning Order which the prosecution applied for to deter similar offensive acts at matches. Magistrates agreed to impose the threeyear order, which comes with conditions, following an hour-long hearing. Brian Payne, prosecuting, said Northumbria Police asked for the public’s help in tracing a man photographed making a Nazi or fascist gesture at the match. He said Spurs were known for having a

“predominantly or very strongly Jewish fan base”, that Stamford Hill in north London was in the club’s catchment area and that it was central to the country’s strictly Orthodox Jewish community. “This defendant took it upon himself to produce a Nazi salute,” Payne said. “He knew or must have known that there was a likelihood of there being a strong Jewish presence among the away supporters. “It was a pretty deliberate and cynical action.” Payne said the purpose of banning orders was to prevent violence and disorder at games in the future. John Wesencraft, defending, said Asher did not have a season ticket and the previous Newcastle game he had attended was some years ago when they were a Championship side. He said Asher had queued to buy a ticket for the Spurs game as it was the first to take place after the new Newcastle owners took over.

Asher’s actions did not lead to violence, Wesencraft said, adding: “Newcastle United supporters were in particularly good cheer that day, even though they lost.” He opposed the banning order, saying his client was unlikely to repeat the gesture given that it was a “moment of madness”, he does not have a season ticket, he had no previous convictions and was not a football hooligan. Asher, of Gibside View, Winlaton, Gateshead, had received a medical discharge from the Royal Engineers as a result of a traumatic experience. Chairman of the Bench Jane Barnes said the panel agreed to impose the banning order, which includes an order to surrender his passport should Asher apply for one, not to enter football grounds and to keep away from England matches. She said the ban on attending matches was being imposed to help prevent disorder at games in the future.

CST lays bare full extent of Covid-based antisemitism A report from the Community Security Trust brings together the extent of antisemitism within Covid conspiracy groups, writes Jenni Frazer. It also shows the legacy for the far-right extremists, who have used fear of vaccines and lockdown to propagate their views. CST recorded 118 antisemitic hate incidents in 2020 and 2021 that involved language or imagery linked to the pandemic, alongside antiJewish language or targeting. These incidents included verbal abuse and threats directed at Jews, graffiti blaming Jews for Covi, and antisemitic leaflets. One man was jailed for 26 weeks in December 2021 after shouting: “You Jews are spreading Covid, you’re responsible for it, you started it” at a Jewish couple in Manchester. In another incident, leaflets posted through letterboxes in south Yorkshire featured caricatures of a Jewish face with the slogans “Don’t trust the Jew Jab” and “Beware the k*ke spike.”

CST says the largest far-right group Patriotic Alternative and former BNP leader Nick Griffin have exploited the anti-vaccine and antilockdown movement to spread their views. Leading activists in the Covid conspiracy movement protested in support of Tahra Ahmed, who was sentenced to 11 months in prison for stirring up racial hatred by claiming that the Grenfell Tower fire was a “Jewish ritual sacrifice”. CST’s report, Covid, Conspiracies and Jew-Hate: Antisemitism in the Covid-19 conspiracy movement, says: “This is the first time that Britain has had a domestic political movement, fuelled primarily by conspiracy theories, that is active both online and offline. It has outlived the ending of Covid restrictions and is likely to retain its influence in the future. “Some Covid conspiracists have started to incorporate conspiracy theories about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in their online output, in an

example of how the pandemic has left a legacy of a permanent conspiracy movement that will latch on to any crisis, whether domestic or global, that allows them to spread more conspiracy theories and misinformation.”

Badenoch bashes bill

Former Tory leadership candidate Kemi Badenoch has angered a leading campaigner against antisemitism by saying the Online Safety Bill is “in no fit state to become law”. Badenoch criticised the bill – which was designed to protect children from harm online, as well as preventing the spread of anti-Jewish racism – in a tweet. It followed reports that the legislation’s final stages through Parliament are delayed until September. Former faith minister Badenoch said postponing the bill was the “right move”, adding: “The bill is in no fit state to become law. We should not be legislating for hurt feelings.” Danny Stone, director of the Antisemitism Policy Trust, who has long argued in favour of the legislation, particularly in regards to tackling racist hate online, tweeted Badenoch saying: “I’d be pleased to discuss the Bill with you as I think you misrepresent what it does.” Other senior Tory MPs, who have been outspoken in their condemnation of antisemitism are also “concerned” by the attacks on the Bill. MPs on the right of the Tory Party, and some Jewish supporters of Badenoch, believe the Bill will give the state powers to police the internet and is an attack on free speech. Damian Collins, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy, including responsibility for the Online Safety Bill, also tweeted: “This is completely wrong Kemi Badenoch – tell me where in this bill there is any provision that requires the removal of legal speech. “Instead for the first time we can set safety standards online based on our laws. Why would you want to stop that?”

Warwick University has dismissed a complaint by Jewish students against a professor that alleged he “made and allowed to be made antisemitic comments” on an online debate. Jewish News had revealed in May that sociology professor Virinder S Kalra had been moderator at an event organised by the Institute for Palestinian Studies. During the lecture in May by the author Amrit Wilson, the Warwick academic quoted a Facebook comment which said: “It is important to point out the Zionists were the only group that broke the Jewish boycott of the Nazis.” Kalra continued: “Many Nazis called themselves Zionist since they would accomplish their ideology of cleansing European Jews.” He added that there were “many links between Israeli far-right and neo-fascist white supremacists united in the hatred of Muslims all over Europe in the West broadly”. A complaint to the university noted that Prof Kalra had described the Facebook comment as a “good point” as he read it. The Union of Jewish Students was among those to complain. Geraldine Mills, Warwick’s HR director, has written: “It has been determined in line with the university’s framework, that the complaint was not established, and therefore the matter will not be considered further.” She said in a letter that it would not be “proportionate to hold a moderator responsible for the words and ideas of other speakers”, adding “We want to be clear that we take all complaints of antisemitism extremely seriously.” Jewish News contacted Warwick University for further comment.

CST also notes: “An alternative form of antisemitism that became prominent in the Covid conspiracy movement is the grotesque and offensive misuse of language and symbols related to the Holocaust. “Anti-vaccine and anti-lockdown

protesters have worn yellow stars (similar to the identifying badges the Nazis forced Jews to wear during the Holocaust) and compared vaccination centres to death camps.” During the pandemic, the report says, the Jewish community suffered from a new type of antisemitic incident known as Zoom-bombing, in which individuals or groups hijacked online Jewish communal events to spread antisemitic hate. Sir Keir Starmer has promised a future Labour government will work directly with the Community Security Trust (CST) in a concerted effort to “break the levels” of violent threats, antisemitism and hate crime blighting the UK. Speaking to Jewish News only minutes after visiting Berlin’s Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe last Friday and ahead of a meeting with Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, Starmer heaped praise on the work carried out by CST in protecting the UK’s Jewish community from rising antisemitism. He said: “Of course a Labour government would support the CST, not just financially either, but in new efforts to break the levels of violent threats and hate crime.” The Labour leader said he had in the past met with the CST regularly “to discuss their concerns” and said the communal charity “are always tracking and have a key line of sight to the level of threats”. He added: “That is always disturbing.” Starmer said: “Every time I walk past a synagogue, including in my constituency with security guards outside, it’s soul-destroying. The idea that outside any religious centre you would need security guards, it’s very dispiriting.” Starmer, who was on a two-day trip to Germany with his shadow foreign secretary, David Lammy, held meetings with Chancellor Scholz and members of the Social Democratic Party government to discuss alliances postBrexit and the war in Ukraine. But he said it was “very important” that he scheduled time to visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, with his shadow foreign secretary. “It’s about reflecting, but also about learning and recommitting, to ensuring this never happens again,” he continued.

The atmospheric Berlin monument, which consists of 2,711 concrete slabs or ‘stelae’ arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping 200,000 square foot site, is built close to the city’s Reichstag building and the Brandenburg Gate. It opened in 2004 and was dedicated the following year. Starmer said the memorial’s location, in such a prominent place in Berlin’s centre, had confirmed his belief that the UK Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre should be built next to parliament in London. “Ever since Ed Balls and Lord Pickles came to show me the detailed plans, I have been very supportive of it,” he said, recognising that there was now a legal challenge over planning permission for the Westminster memorial to overcome. “Being at the Berlin memorial, I believe there was a dispute about whether it should be built in such an official spot in the centre, with its reminder of a shameful past. But I actually think that makes it more powerful. Our own memorial should be in Victoria Tower Gardens, next to parliament. It has a symbolism there, I think.” Gathering his thoughts on his time spent wondered through the Berlin memorial, where he was taken on a guided tour and signed a guest book, Starmer said: “I found it unsettling, and that’s a good thing. It was really thought-provoking.

British Birthright participants quit tour over settlement stay Participants on a British Birthright tour this week stayed in a West Bank settlement for three nights after an itinerary change, leading two young adults to leave the trip in anger, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Jacob Middleburgh, 25, a photographer, and Lauren Keiles, a madracha (tour leader) who works at the Board of Deputies, walked away from the 10-day programme once the Israeli organisers’ decision was made public. It is the first time a British Birthright trip has included an overnight stay in the West Bank and raises questions around insurance, safety, and politics, for both parents and future participants. Although the free trips are facilitated in the UK by the British Jewish charity UJIA, Birthright Israel is run by a subsidiary of Israel’s iconic Jewish Agency, and the trips are seen as a rite of passage for Jewish youngsters around the world. The 30-strong group of British 18 to 32-year-olds were told that their Jerusalem hotel had been cancelled and that they would instead be staying at Almog Kibbutz, near the Dead Sea and close to the border with Jordan but behind the Green Line. Websites advertising the kibbutz say it was established in 1979 by “idealistic members from other kibbutzim in Israel who came to the area to fulfil the Zionist settlement vision”. Palestinian activists claim the land was confiscated from the Nabi Musa locality in 1977. UJIA, which this week put the West Bank stay down to logistics, tells

participants that the Birthright trip gives them “the chance to immerse yourself in the culture, history, and politics of our dynamic homeland”. Speaking to Jewish News this week, Middleburgh said: “I only knew it was in the West Bank because Lauren found out. I was so angry, I felt I had no choice but to leave.” He said the pair were then “dropped off in the middle of the road” in Jaffa while the rest of the tour continued. “I’m 25 and I work, so I had the means to stay somewhere else and to pay for a flight back, but

most of the others on the tour were younger, around 18, and simply couldn’t afford to do that,” he said. “We were far from alone in being deeply uncomfortable about staying in an illegal settlement, but others felt they had no choice. What happens if there’s an incident while they’re there? Is insurance still valid?” On the Israeli organisers, he said: “It just didn’t occur to them that it might be an issue. Earlier, the Israeli Birthright tour guide had been pointing to West Bank territory, beyond the Green Line, calling it Israeli. It was all very political.” Birthright Israel is run by Israel Experience Ltd, a subsidiary of the Jewish Agency for Israel. It says its programmes offer “the highest standards of service, safety and security… to facilitate and implement Jewish-Zionist experiential, educational visits to Israel in order to strengthen Jewish identity among Jews, especially youth”. A spokesman for UJIA confirmed: “One leader and one participant withdrew from the group. We understand the reasons for their decision.” They added: “Our partners on the ground and their service provider were informed at short notice that one group’s planned accommodation was unavailable due. Security arrangements around President Biden’s visit, demand caused by the Maccabiah Games and the fact it was over Shabbat made finding alternatives very challenging. Our partners on the ground sought out all possible options within an hour of Jerusalem and only Kibbutz Almog was available.”

Anger over Reform shechita proposals A furious row has broken out between Shechita UK and rabbis from Reform Judaism after a report from the Assembly of Reform Rabbis and Cantors suggested pre-stunning before kosher slaughter of animals was now acceptable. Shechita UK’s director, Shimon Cohen, described the Reform report as “woefully ignorant” and “a reckless disgrace”. The Reform group’s chair, Rabbi Jonathan Romain, noted shechita practice had adjusted over the years in line with perceived best practice.

Lift-off for Israeli firm’s ‘flying car’ An Israeli startup that is developing a “flying” vehicle, an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for individual consumers, said its prototype aircraft successfully completed a first hover test with regulators recently, setting the company on a path for further flight certification. ‘Supersizing’ is one solution being proposed for under-subscribed classes

Concerned parents fear there will be a “massive detrimental impact” on their children after learning the youngsters will join a super-sized class of 37 pupils next year, writes Sarah Miller. Rosh Pinah Primary School in Edgware has proposed that two smaller classes for the current Year 2 are merged into one larger class for the 2022/2023 academic year. Headteacher Jill Howson outlined the plans for the new class, which will be led by one teacher and two teaching assistants, in a letter sent to parents last week. It stated: “As you are aware, Year 2 is an extremely small cohort with just 37 children in the whole year group. “A consequence of this is that the children have had very small classes sizes which would normally be found in private education, but not in a state school.” Ms Howson acknowledged that smaller

class sizes had “been of enormous benefit to the children in closing any gaps in attainment and progress brought about by this disruption to schooling that the pandemic has caused”. However, in a subsequent letter sent to parents explaining the decision in further detail, Ms Howson alluded to financial strains placed on the school in maintaining two under-subscribed classes. Government rules maintain that Key Stage 1 – children aged five to seven – should be taught in a class size no greater than 30, but there is no maximum limit on class sizes for children in Key Stage 2, which covers ages seven to 11. In Ms Howson’s second letter, she explained: “I think it is also only fair to highlight that I have to manage the financial decisions relating to the school, which is always a concern when you have to factor in the loss of revenue from the government when the year group is not full.”

School’s £330k fundraiser Finchley’s Sacks Morasha Jewish Primary School raised more than £330,000 for its “Match for Morasha” campaign. The money will help fund the final stage of the school’s building project. The funds, most of which were raised in an intensive 36-hour campaign, will be used as part of a £1.2 million

Night on the tiles for Scrabble star A Jewish man from London has come within a whisker of winning this year’s National Scrabble Championship, with the final of the 78-player tournament coming down to just one letter. Elie Dangoor, 63, narrowly lost in a tense match to Brett Smitheram, 43, a Scrabble grand master and reigning UK national Scrabble champion who is already one of the most successful players in the history of the game. Dangoor, whose brother David is a well-known Jewish philanthropist, galloped into an early lead with words such as ‘blowiest’, ‘pricier’, and ‘encave’ – a triple word score – but a Smitheram recovery meant that it all came down to the last letter. “He needed an E, a one-in-eight chance, and he got it,” said Elie, who also plays backgammon, chess, and bridge. “It was most unfortunate! Still, it was a very satisfying tournament, as I was only seeded 11th.” Elie, a real estate director who chaired the World English-Language Scrabble Players Association until two years ago, has played the word game all over the world, including in Thailand, India, Germany, and Ireland.

“I actually beat [Smitheram] earlier in the tournament,” he said, speaking to Jewish News this week. “Yes, it was heartbreaking to lose at the end, but I can’t complain at my luck throughout. “It’s a shame because I would have been the oldest national champion if I’d won. But that’s OK, it just means I’ll be an even older champion when I do eventually win it!” Players play 16 games throughout the tournament, and each contender has 25 minutes per game, equating to roughly one move every minute. “Lots of Jewish people play Scrabble,” said Elie. “I don’t know why, but we seem to like it!”

British man in hospital after Jerusalem stabbing attack A man thought to hold dual British and Israeli nationality was being treated at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Hospital this week after being stabbed by a Palestinian assailant while both were travelling on a bus in the capital. Eli Mellish, 41, who is believed to be married and lives in the settlement of Givat Ze’ev on the West Bank, was stabbed in the head by a Palestinian man of similar age, while travelling on bus 137, near Jerusalem’s north-east Ramot neighbourhood. The attacker used a screwdriver to stab Mr Mellish, who has family in Manchester and is said to be originally from Liverpool. He graduated from Birmingham University in 2003. He was taken to Shaare Zedek, which issued a statement on Tuesday, saying his condition was not life-threatening. Members of his friends and

family WhatsApp group were being urged to say prayers for his speedy recovery. Police told reporters that the Palestinian had attacked Mr Mellish on the bus while it was moving. The driver stopped and all the remaining passengers left the bus. But before police arrived on the scene, a photographer who works for the Ynet news site, Meshi Ben Ami, saw what was going on and shot and wounded the alleged assailant. He later told the Kan TV channel: “I got out of the car, loaded my gun and realised it was a terror attack. The stabber came to me, I did not hesitate and fired one bullet at him. I heard him praying in Arabic”. The suspected stabber was taken to a hospital, where he was listed as being in moderate condition, police said.

EDGWARE SCHOOL DOWNGRADED An Orthodox Jewish girls’ school in Edgware that doubled in size in five years has been downgraded by Ofsted because the secular curriculum is “not well developed”. It follows publication of a report following an inspection in May of Beis Chinuch Primary School, an independent

day school with 274 pupils, in which inspectors downgraded the institution from ‘Good’ to ‘Requires Improvement’. In a mixed report, inspectors said: “The secular curriculum, while broad, is not well developed. “This prevents pupils from achieving well and remem-

bering knowledge in the longterm in some subjects.” School leaders are “currently revisiting their curriculum thinking”, according to the Ofsted report, which highlighted several positives, including the “outstanding” and “exemplary” behaviour and attitude of pupils.

A group of cross-party parliamentarians and Jewish Women’s Aid have welcomed the publication of the Statutory Guidance (SG) to the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. Lord Mendelsohn, who helped set up the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Get Refusal, said: “The Statutory Guidance and the overall government approach are very welcome and have broad cross-party support. “These are important advances and ensure that progress is made on recognising the rights and concerns of women and that all Jewish women can have the full protection of UK law. “There is still much work to be done but this demonstrates that the direction of travel is clear.” He added: “We are encouraged at reports that the Betai Din (religious courts) have committed, in discussions with government,

to reform their procedures and provide more transparency, so it is more accessible, evenhanded and supports women. “Now the Statutory Guidance has been published we look forward to announcements of these changes in the coming weeks.” Baroness Ros Altmann, another of the APPG’s founders, said: “I am delighted that Parliament has shown its support for Jewish women who are suffering abuse because of rules specific to their religious beliefs. I am grateful to the ministers, officials and colleagues who worked to ensure this matter was clarified under the new Domestic Abuse Act. “The aim is to help women, already going through the painful experience of divorce, avoid the further anguish caused by Get refusal, so they can proceed with their lives freely in accordance with their religious beliefs.” She said she hoped religious leaders would “continue to work hard to improve the way these victims are treated and introduce new

procedures that offer greater support, while also clearly indicating to their communities that refusing to grant a Get is unacceptable, abusive behaviour”. Naomi Dickson, chief executive of Jewish Women’s Aid, commented: “We are incredibly happy that the Statutory Guidance has been published with these added protections for Jewish and other minority faith women. “It is key to helping Jewish women to feel acknowledged and more confident to reach out for support if they are being abused through Get refusal or in other culturally specific ways”. The guidance, she said, should also act “as a deterrent to potential abusers and encourage institutions, including mainstream domestic abuse agencies and the Jewish courts, to become literate in how to support women well in this area.”

time, the Foreign Ministry said: “The (Amnesty) report denies Israel’s right to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people.” Amnesty International has repeatedly denied claims of antisemitism around its focus on Israel, but Benedict said he expected the range of

campaign products featuring the Israel apartheid logo “to be popular”. He added: “Our campaign to help end Israel’s cruel system of apartheid against Palestinians has seen an excellent response from people who are opposed to racism and discrimination.”

Holocaust archive on show to US audience The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) has announced two new partnerships which will enable audiences in America and Europe to access and use its ground-breaking Holocaust testimony archive called Refugee Voices, writes Jenni Frazer. In a first collaboration with a US partner, the entire collection of 270 AJR Refugee Voices interviews will now be held at the Center for Jewish History in New York, which provides a collaborative home for the American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Yeshiva University Museum, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, and the Leo Baeck Institute. The Center for Jewish History’s head of archive and library services, Rachel Miller, said: “The Center for Scenes from the ground-breaking Refugee Voices files Jewish History is honoured to be the first US institution to provide access to immigrant experiences of Central and Eastern these testimonies. These voices from the UK European Jewish survivors, Iraqi Jews and will broaden the rich digital footprint of the Soviet-era refuseniks currently available to oral histories documenting the refugee and our US audience.”

PaJeS and Wohl Foundation serve food voucher scheme A major boost to helping children whose families are suffering from food poverty has been secured by PaJeS, the umbrella network supporting Jewish schools, writes Jenni Frazer. Rabbi David Meyer, PaJeS chief executive, has announced “generous funding” from the Maurice Wohl charitable foundation, which will pay for food vouchers this summer for any children registered for

free school meals. The scheme applies to 41 schools, primary and secondary, across the religious spectrum, and a potential 1200 children. PaJeS acknowledgesthat food poverty had become more widespread and apparent than ever, due to the twin problems of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis. Rabbi Meyer said: “School holidays are traditionally a

time of fun and relaxation for families. However, for those facing financial difficulties, it can be a particularly taxing time. “This is especially true at this time with the impacts of Covid and such a troublesome economic climate. Growing Hendon community’s new rabbinic couple

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has welcomed the newly-formed Rebbetzins Representatives of the United Synagogue (RRUS), a community group for rebbetzins to be chaired by Jacqueline Feldman of Bushey Synagogue. The group, supported by Rebbetzin Ruchie Ehrentreu and Lady Sacks, widow of the late Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks, was encouraged by Mirvis, speaking at a one-day conference of the US Rabbinic Council, to find new ways to engage their members while staying true to religious tradition. More than 100 US rabbis and rebbetzins took part in the event, which was held at Hendon Synagogue. There were tributes later in the evening to Rabbi Baruch and Rebbetzen Nechama Davis. who are leaving Chigwell to make aliyah after 25 years of service.

Rabbi Yoni and Rebbetzen Dina Golker have been appointed as the new rabbinic couple of the United Synagogue’s Magen Avot community in Hendon. The couple are currently the community rabbi and rebbetzen at St John’s Wood Synagogue, where they have served for six years. Between 2013 and 2016, they were the directors of the youth movement, Ezra. The Golkers both grew up in northwest London and are alumni of Menorah Primary School and Hasmonean High School. Rabbi Golker studied at Yeshivas Beis Yisroel in Jerusalem for three years. He continued his studies in the UK, receiving semicha from Rabbi Zalman Nechemia Goldberg in conjunction with the Edgware Kollel in London in 2015. He taught for over a decade at JFS.

Swim centres for all in J’lem The Jerusalem Foundation is poised to open two new sports centres for the first time in east Jerusalem, writes Jenni Frazer. The foundation’s president, Shai Doron, was in London last week to speak to potential British donors for the second centre in Zhur Baka, following the launch of the one in Beit Hanina, where building has just begun. Both centres are estimated to cost £16m. The focus of the sports centres is swimming, a subject close to Doron’s heart as he is a competitive swimmer, continuing to take part in veterans’ races and swimming every day, even while in London. As he told Jewish News, there are two communities that do not use the public facilities in west Jerusalem: the Palestinians and the strictly Orthodox. “It’s a basic skill that every child in Israel should be able to swim,” Doron said, noting that the numbers of young Palestinians who drowned in the sea were far higher than deaths in the general population. For both communities, Doron said, there were issues of modesty and separate facilities, both of which have been taken into account when planning the east Jerusalem centres. He noted: “The biggest news is the partnership between the Jerusalem Foundation and the Palestinians in east Jerusalem, who were willing to take the responsibility to run and operate the sports centres. If we are talking about a society with equal opportunities, we must build these kind of centres.”

MACRON: WE COLLABORATED – DENYING IT FALSIFIES HISTORY It is a falsification of history to suggest French leaders were trying to save the country’s Jews when they collaborated with the Nazis, Emmanuel Macron has said, writes Michael Daventry. The French president used a speech in central France to mark the 80th anniversary of a mass roundup of Jews to point to a “new type of revisionism” in his country. On 16 and 17 July 1942 about 13,000 people were taken to Paris’s Vel d’Hiv, the Winter Velodrome, before being sent to concentration camps elsewhere in Europe. It was the largest mass detention of Jews by French police in collaboration with the German occupiers. “We have not finished with antisemitism and we must be lucid in observing it,” Macron said on Sunday. “This antisemitism is more ardent and rampant than it was in 1995 in Europe and in so many parts of the world.” It was in 1995 that President Jacques Chirac officially recognised the Vel d’Hiv roundup and

In recent years some far-right fringes have claimed that Pétain, collaborationist statesman Pierre Laval, police chief René Bousquet and commissioner for Jewish affairs Louis Darquier de Pellepoix had in fact attempted to save France’s Jews.

But Macron insisted on Sunday that this was false. “Have some not recently reopened a controversy that had nevertheless been settled long ago by historians, as well as jurists about the participation of Pétain and the men of Vichy to the application of the ‘final solution’?” he said. “So let us repeat it here with strength, even if it might anger revisionist commentators: neither Pétain, nor Laval, or Bousquet, or Darquier de Pellepoix, none of these men wanted to save the Jews. Saying it is a falsification of history.” Macron was speaking at the inauguration of a memorial in the town of Pithiviers, in the Loire Valley. The Shoah Memorial in Paris, which collects archives on France’s Holocaust victims, has launched an appeal to reach the last witnesses and survivors of the Vel d’Hiv round-up.

JOE BIDEN KNEELS TO MEET SURVIVORS

Joe Biden dispensed with both social distancing and the chair arranged for him as he embraced two Holocaust survivors, then knelt to speak with them during his first trip to Israel as US president. Rene Quint, 86, and Giselle Cycowicz, 95, were scheduled to have a brief conversation with Biden at Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust museum. He spoke with the women for about seven minutes.

SAUDIS OPEN AIRSPACE TO ISRAEL Israel has welcomed Saudi Arabian plans to open its airspace to Israeli planes, a big step towards normalising relations between the countries. Under the deal brokered by the United States, the civil aviation authority GAVA said it would “open the kingdom’s airspace for all air carriers that meet the requirements of the authority for overflying”. Although the statement did not name Israel, it was public confirmation that Saudi

Arabia would no longer refuse access to airlines based on their country of origin. Israel’s prime minister said last week it was good news after “a long road of intense and covert diplomacy”. Yair Lapid said: “This decision was preceded by the signing of the Jerusalem Declaration, deepening America’s commitment to Israel’s security, the fight against the Iranian nuclear programme and the advancing of normalisa-

tion initiatives of the Abraham Accords and the Negev Summit. “I would like to thank the President of the United States, Joe Biden, for a visit that moved our entire country and for his commitment to Israel’s military and diplomatic strength. I wish him success at the Jeddah Summit.” Saturday’s meeting in Jeddah was attended by Gulf Cooperation Council countries, as well as Egypt, Jordan and Iraq and President Biden.

RABBIS IN WEATHER WARNING A cross-denominational group of rabbis has said this week’s extreme weather is down to climate change and urged British Jews to do all they can to help meet the net zero carbon target. In a statement, the Rabbinic team at EcoJudaism pleaded with communities to “work with us in raising the profile of getting to net zero as soon as possible and certainly by 2050”. They quoted the great sage Hillel, saying: “If not now, when?” It follows a week of record high temperatures in the UK, the heat having led to several deaths across the country. “Climate change, specifically the increase in atmospheric temperatures caused by fossil fuel emissions, are contributing to the extreme weather we are facing,” they said. “Extreme weather may be something we experience more often. This is a time for us all to be absolutely clear about the effects of climate change on our lives.”

Fears over Jewish sect fundraising in London London’s strictly-Orthodox Jewish community was warned this week that members of an extreme Jewish sect are currently in the capital to raise funds, writes Adam Decker. The photographic claims, which have not yet been verified by Jewish News, are being circulated widely online by a campaign group set up to help survivors of the Lev Tahor sect, whose leaders are currently in jail in the United States after being convicted of child kidnapping. Hundreds of members of the anti-Zionist sect have been disbursed around the world in recent years, the group having settled – or sought to settle – in countries such as Guatemala, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Mexico, and Iran. Those who have managed to escape have told of child sexual abuse, physical abuse, and a custom of arranged marriage for Jewish

girls as young as 14, who are typically dressed head-totoe in dark clothing from the age of three. Eight years ago, Canadian authorities sought to place the young children of Lev Tahor members under the foster care of Canadian Jewish Orthodox families, after police raids found up to five children per room, sleeping on urine-soaked mattresses. Several had fungal infections. Members’ prayers last twice as long as the Charedi norm, they adhere to an even stricter kosher food interpretation and do not let their children attend school. Whenever a host country’s child safeguarding authorities begin investigating, they move to a different country. A spokesperson for the US-based watch-group Lev Tahor Survivors said: “Numerous members have been convicted in the United States and the cult is actively trying to recruit to make up for the losses.”

SYNAGOGUE AIR-CON HELPS LOCALS TO KEEP THEIR COOL Community members across the UK turned to their synagoues this week to cool off during the unprecedented heatwave, with the United Synagogue opening at least three synagogues — St John’s Wood, Finchley (Kinloss) and South Hampstead — so people can enjoy the buildings’ air-conditioning.

The inability of Progressives at the Western Wall to stand next to their co-religionists in silent prayer, hubristically demanding a ‘place of their own’, amounts to a passive-aggressive stance which is provocative and arguably similarly violent to those who protested a Progressive barmitzvah and ripped up prayer books. The Kotel is a place of private prayer and contemplation. There is a decorum to be observed which Progressives flaunt for their own selfish reasons. How would they react if another even more supremely progressive group demanded an allocation of additional space for their idiosyncrasies? We stand at the Kotel with our heads bowed, humbled in the face of a God who implores us to transcend egotism, tendentiousness and small-mindedness. It is time Progressives understood this. USEFUL EVIL OUR PAL BORIS THE LOGS I am writing to solve Isaac Cohen’s mystery in his letter (7 July) about the endurance of antisemitism over the centuries. First, he is absolutely correct in saying there is no rational reason for such hatred. It is a correction tool that Hashem has put in place to keep the Jews from assimilating among the nations of the world and, in effect, ceasing to exist as a Jewish people. The closer we get the worse the antisemitism becomes, so antisemitism is actually a necessary benefit to the continued existence of the Jewish people, and we would do well to contemplate this and adjust accordingly.

I’ll miss Boris Johnson. Having been in Jerusalem and it’s interesting to compare governments here and there. Their fragilities are strikingly similar. For all his unconventional ways, he was a true friend of the Jews and Israel and could be relied on to support our community. Boy George performing for Jewish Care, I wonder if he is aware the house he now lives in on Hampstead Heath housed about 100 refugee children brought over by the late Dr Shonfeld to live in while we went to school in The Drive, Golders Green? Every weekday we took the train from Hampstead Underground, then walked along Golders Green Road – the stories are endless. I left the school in 1949, toward the end of boarding there. I would love to hear from anybody who went there and remembers the house, called The Logs.

I am very surprised the paper has given her this platform to air her one-sided views Jewish News has not challenged anything in the article or offered a balanced view from those who do not agree with her approach, which in my opinion can be compared to a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Such articles don’t do much for peace as one side (the Palestinians) will seem to think, wrongly, they don’t have a role to play or compromise in any way in pursuit of peace. It is antisemitic to tease a Jewish man for having no foreskin. That should be patently obvious. It is why two men were arrested when they were suspected of being part of a group of West Ham fans who chanted that abuse at a strictly-Orthodox passenger on a Ryanair flight last year. It is also why many Jews reacted with astonishment this week to learn the charges against them had been dropped on an apparent technicality: prosecutors were not clear if the plane was in British airspace, so they could not be sure if British law still applied. Many in our community will now be wondering how high the bar is to convict someone for Jew hate. We should all be concerned by the Campaign Against Antisemitism’s reminder that this is the third time in as many months that the Crown Prosecution Service either dropped or reduced charges against suspects in high-profile antisemitic hate crime incidents. Campaigners are exploring other legal options in the West Ham case, but it appears unlikely anything more can be done. These were not boisterous lads enjoying a little joke; they were abusing and humiliating a visibly Jewish man. Police, prosecutors and politicians never miss an opportunity to tell us they will not tolerate racism or discrimination. In this case the Jewish community has been badly let down.

As prime minister I will continue to work to remove barriers to trade between Israel and the UK and work towards an advanced Free Trade Agreement that supports jobs and drives growth. This pact will spur technological breakthroughs, which have the potential to change the world, create high-quality jobs in both our countries and provide tools to our security forces. I am looking forward to working closer with my friend Yair as prime minister. Both the UK and Israel are outward-looking, patriotic nations, who are natural like-minded partners. As prime minister I will ensure our great nations work even more closely to create more jobs, more economic growth and uphold our security. I know many in the Jewish community feel that the bar is too high for bring forward convictions for antisemitism. I will double down in my determination to stamp out antisemitism and hate. I will do everything in my power to ensure that those are spewing clear Jew hatred will be prosecuted quickly. henever I manage to get back to my home city, Southampton, to visit my parents, I always make sure to visit my temple that has been the focal point of my religious experience throughout my life. My faith is incredibly important to me, as I know it is to many of you too. We are fortunate to live in a country where freedom of religion is a fundamental value. However, this freedom is incomplete. Whenever I visit my temple I do not have to be concerned about abuse being directed at me or be worried for my safety. For Jewish communities across the UK, that is not the case. This should concern everyone in our country and motivate us all to do more. It is a sobering thought that security guards are required outside synagogues and faith schools, or that Jewish children are sometimes abused as they walk home from school. I am only too well aware of reports that antisemitic abuse is Sunak secured 137 votes as it became a two-horse race on the rise. We know the psychological impacts that this abuse can have on individuals and communities. It is important to remember that behind every statistic there are real people feeling less secure in the place they call home. I am extremely concerned by the rises in reports of antisemitic hate. The Antisemitic Incidents Report showed the highest ever half-year total for antisemitic hate incidents occured in the six months from January to June of last year. If I become prime minister, this is one of the key issues I would like to discuss with the Chief Rabbi, when I meet him in No 10, alongside what more a new Government could do to support the Jewish community in the UK. I will, for example, build on the work of this Government to support Jewish communities across the country. We will continue to fund the Community Support Trust and I pledge to meet with the CST’s CEO, Mark Gardner, to discuss concerns and how we as a Government can support Jewish communities. This is not an issue to be equivocal about: everyone across Parliament and the country must take a robust position on eliminating antisemitism and I am determined to ensure this scourge on our society is eradicated. Antisemitism can take many forms and come from many quarters. I will continue to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Bill, that will prevent public bodies engaging in boycotts that undermine community cohesion. The Jewish community is right to call out those who seek to damage the only Jewish state in the world. A government I lead would seek to enhance our cultural and economic ties with Israel. As a country, we must work collaboratively to eliminate racism and discrimination wherever we see it. I have a simple message to the Jewish community: a Conservative Government led by me will listen to your concerns, and will always do its utmost to address them.

The complicated muck of Labour kremlinology ADAM LANGLEBEN

o what is the Forde Report? The majority of Jewish News readers will be unaware that, in April 2020, a report was leaked to the media entitled: The work of the Labour Party’s Governance and Legal Unit in relation to antisemitism, 2014–2019. This report, written in the dying days of Corbyn’s leadership, leaked just as Keir Starmer was elected (presumably to cause chaos), sought to codify Corbyn’s team’s narrative of what they did to tackle antisemitism. It was claimed the report was written to send to the EHRC – however Labour’s lawyers at the time urged the party not to – in part because it accepted (and perhaps would have exacerbated) the many charges JLM levelled at the party. Either way, following the leak the EHRC acknowledged the document made little difference to its findings. The report was leaked, deliberately unredacted. It included names and details of dozens of Jewish and non-Jewish complainants to the party, including myself, who made complaints. It also included an array of internal emails and Whatsapp messages from Labour Party staff. Any person who complains of racism should feel assured their privacy will be respected. In this instance, whoever leaked the document had no regard whatsoever for the wellbeing of Jewish members, some of whose names suddenly appeared on far-right websites following the leak. The party and individuals who have been accused of leaking the document – which they deny – are currently involved in legal proceedings and the ICO is deciding whether or not to bring forward criminal charges. Frustratingly, but understandably, Forde doesn’t report on this. The leaked report itself did acknowledge the scale of antisemitism within the party and largely accepted this phenomenon became widespread following the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader. Where it differed from other analysis was who it tried to blame for the failure in tackling the issue. Broadly and concisely, according to this document, the blame lay with ‘right-wing’ staffers who tried to obstruct Corbyn’s team’s efforts. The leaked report claimed some of those same staffers tried to sabotage the 2017 election campaign and, more seriously, made racist and sexist comments about black Labour MPs. On the leak being made public, Keir Starmer commissioned Martin Forde QC to lead an inquiry that has lasted two years and culminated in the Forde Report, released this week. The remit was narrow. I fear Forde has gone beyond it: • The circumstances in which the report was commissioned and the process involved.

• The contents and wider culture and practices referred to in the report. • The circumstances in which the report was put into the public domain. Just as we respected the independence of the EHRC, I have no reason to doubt the independence of Martin Forde. He is a respected and eminent QC praised by many. He understands racism more broadly without being an expert in antisemitism. But his job here was not to investigate antisemitism – that job was done by the EHRC – his job was to investigate the issues above. However, the single overriding finding in his report is that antisemitism in the Labour Party was a real, serious and widescale problem and fully accepted the EHRC action plan. He wrote: “There is nothing in the Leaked Report (or elsewhere in the evidence we have seen) to support the conclusion that the problem of antisemitism in the party was overstated.” Forde was brutal in some respects. He was clear that factionalism fueled the growth of antisemitism by some members who said it was a smear. He argues factionalism entrenched positions and mistrust led to bad practices. This is something we have never disputed. It is understandable that, through intellectual curiosity, perhaps, Forde wanted to look at the actions the Labour Party is now taking on antisemitism. One he chose to cover was education. For the past year, as Labour’s Jewish affiliate, JLM has been delivering antisemitism awareness education to members, primarily online due to covid. Our training, developed and delivered in conjunction with Labour, following consultation with the community, has been well-received and sought to meet members’ where they are and give them information to challenge antisemitism. It is not training for antisemites on how not to be antisemitic. With that in mind, we find his recommendations on training out of kilter with our experiences on delivering it. His comment on engaging with Jewish Voice for Labour, who were established to deny antisemitism and

findings are not Labour Party policy. They are his observations and findings as this was an independent investigation. He published it and the Labour Party had an hour’s notice to view the document before it was circulated to the National Executive Committee and later published. And he has issued a number of recommendations – some of which Labour might adopt and others it won’t.

provide cover for the previous Labour leadership and the antisemites they tolerated and enabled, is frankly propesterous. Jewish Voice for Labour, contrary to what Forde writes elsewhere in the report, does believe that antisemitism in the Labour Party was overstated and has frequently praised, platformed and defended antisemites that, ultimately, were expelled from the party. Thus, it is doubly disappointing that Forde decided to talk about JLM’s training in its report, but not talk to JLM about it first.Forde’s

To close and be clear again, this was not a report on antisemitism – that was not part of its terms of reference. That job was done by the EHRC and BBC Panorama and this confirmed their findings. We have had multiple legal cases since that point and all have all vindicated this position. This is a report that sought to find a way through the tough and complicated muck of Labour Party factionalism and kremlinology. In all likelihood, no one and everyone will be happy with this report. What happened during

that time was so multifaceted that in truth no one may ever know exactly what happened behind closed doors. What we do know and what is most important is that Labour was found by the UK equalities regulator to have committed unlawful acts towards Jewish members and it is trying under its new leadership to put that right. For us and our members who had their data leaked by ex-staff members who had no care for our welfare, the fact that this cannot be covered due to ongoing legal proceedings and criminal investigations means the report does not provide closure. The Labour left in particular still needs a deep reckoning and introspection over what happened on its watch. So far it doesn’t seem to have grasped the scale of what occurred. Too many still believe the action taken to date by Keir Starmer represents a witchhunt when, in reality, it is an institutional reckoning and a cleansing of antisemites, and those who had supported them from the party – it’s not done and there is more to do. If the Labour left is to be taken seriously on this issue it needs to understand what it allowed to happen in the first place and commit properly to ensure it never happens again.

The manipulation of Anne Frank’s legacy ALEX HEARN

he rise in antisemitism occurring at the same time as the desecration of Anne Frank’s memory is no coincidence. If you view the Holocaust in its context as the culmination of thousands of years of antisemitic oppression, then it doesn’t feel like an isolated event or a blip. It feels more like an inevitable point along a timeline of anti-Jewish events. But what if organisations trusted to educate people about the Holocaust removed that context and stripped away its Jewish specificity? This is what the Anne Frank Trust has, in my view, has done. Its recruitment advert for young trustees specified its “new strategy” of wanting people with experience of all types of prejudice. For its “creative storytelling workshop” for young people, it used someone who believed

“Zionist scum” should be “thrown down the well”. This wasnt a one-off. There were other instances of the Trust promoting people who repeatedly used concerning themes. For the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Anne Frank’s memoirs, the Anne Frank Trust saw fit to commission Michael Rosen, a long-term friend and staunch defender of Jeremy Corbyn, who led the Labour Party into institutional antisemitism. Mr Rosen downplayed the issue. The memory of Anne Frank has been manipulated and transformed from a murdered

Anne Frank House even asked one of its employees to stop wearing a kippa on the site on grounds of ‘neutrality’ – forcing another Jew to go into hiding in the very same house. The director of Anne Frank House reportedly said, when refusing permission to film the documentary The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank, that Anne is a symbol and symbols should not be shown dying in concentration camps. But that is the entire point of Anne’s tragic story. Meanwhile, the BBC recently reported on an investigation which, without evidence, concluded Jews “probably” betrayed Anne Frank. This appeared to be an attempt to build on the familiar narrative where the second most famous Jew, now also a symbol of hope and love, was betrayed by Jews as well. While prominent Dutch historians slammed it as “defamatory nonsense” causing the publisher to eventually pull out, The Anne Frank House Museum was reportedly “impressed”. It is little wonder that Anne Frank is being recast as both Palestinian and having “white privilege”, when those who should protect

her appear to overlook this de-Judaisation and revision. On social media there is a noticeable trend of resentment towards Jews who are seen as hijacking the Holocaust, while others demand the Holocaust message be a context-free “all lives matter”. Universalising the Holocaust creates a fertile climate for future generations of antisemitic events. How can we expect people to fight against or even just recognise antisemitism when it is being erased from the Holocaust? The industrial genocide of Jewish people was an attempt by Nazis to wipe every Jew from the face of the earth. This fact should never be appropriated and should not be used against Jews. If we want to equip people to understand antisemitism, then we need to have organisations in place like the Holocaust Educational Trust, who can do the job effectively. Using the tragedy of a murdered Jewish girl as a vehicle to relativise the Holocaust and whitewash antisemitism is a betrayal to the community and those murdered in the Holocaust.

Debbie Collins meets Sara Nathan, who has helped 3,000 refugees find homes away from home in the UK

ollowing political unrest between Russia and Ukraine for almost 10 years, in February the Russian invasion resulted in more than 8.8 million Ukrainians fleeing the country – many arriving in the UK. As a response, many charities and organisations have worked tirelessly in fundraising and volunteering to help those arriving in Britain. The incredible generosity of hosts welcoming refugees for free forced the government to rethink its policies and offer payment of £350 a month for accommodating them. Refugees at Home has placed almost 3,000 guests from all over the world with a variety of hosts: empty nesters, those in their 80s, families with young children, LGBTQ+ partners and even Gary Lineker. Here, the organisation’s co-founder, Sara Nathan, answers questions. about the charity’s work. Why did you establish Refugees at Home? In 2015, when the European migrant crisis was being widely reported, I wanted to help people in need. My grandparents had hosted a Kindertransport boy, so I had this in the back of my mind. Having followed a career in journalism, I had the skills to highlight the issues at hand. The initial groundwork was done through Facebook,

and I built on it from there with the help of lawyers Travers Smith, who worked pro-bono. Has being Jewish had any influence on your work? As Jews, we have a tradition and a history of being refugees. My husband Malcolm and I have strong ties to West London Synagogue, where we became involved with a drop-in centre. My parents were married at WLS and so were we, with Reform Judaism an important part of my adult life. We got involved with the asylum seeker drop-in centre just after it started about 10 years ago and it’s where I first learnt about the challenges facing asylum seekers. Our hosts are disproportionately Jewish, Quaker and LGBTQ+, as we all have experience of oppression and a commitment to relieving it. Almost none of our guests have ever met a Jew before. It has not been a problem – in fact, it has been enlightening for both sides. There must be many challenges, but are there also many rewards? There are challenges, of course. You have to share your space to some extent; some people need more help, advice and time than you sometimes have and the ‘move on’ can be tricky, whether you are sad or simply relieved. But

the rewards are wonderful: meeting different people, trying different food, learning about different places and politics – and how the UK works for those who are at the bottom of the socio-economic pile. Also, there’s someone to water the plants while you are away! How many refugees have you hosted? Thirty-one to date – pretty much all men. Currently we are hosting Ibrahim, a refugee from Chad. In the past, we hosted several from Syria and Egypt plus Iran, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Kuwait, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Baluchistan and probably some I’ve forgotten. My family have always been keen, and the grandchildren tend to get on particularly well with our guests. Moha, who stayed two years during lockdown, was a particular favourite. Is the language barrier a problem? Google Translate is your friend. So are smiles and cups of tea. How does the organisation raise awareness and all-important funding? We get no funding from the government. Money comes in from trusts, and grants from High Holy Day Appeals and personal donations. Plus, we have a Founders Circle for generous people who are happy to contribute at least £1,200. We are all over social media but not TikTok yet. And we do a lot of talking on broadcast and print media. When Gary Lineker stepped forward to help a couple of years ago, there was a massive surge in people offering assistance. Has the government’s Homes for Ukraine sponsorship scheme given you hope? The site crashed within the first two hours of its launch in March 2022 due to overwhelming interest. Homes for Ukraine is the first time there has been any government engagement with hosting, but we hope it’s not the last. The Minister for Refugees, Lord Harrington (also a member of WLS), says he hopes it’s part of the UK response to refugees going forward. Whenever any refugee story shows people suffering, people come forward.

HOME WITH A HEART With the help of Refugees at Home, Gary Lineker (right) hosted a refugee named Rasheed in August 2020. He said afterwards: “It’s been fascinating and a real education for my boys as well… and he was brilliant with them. I’ll definitely do it again.” Gary posted a letter on his Instagram account from Rasheed thanking him, which said: “I can never forget your hospitality, love and company that you and your lovely respectful children gave to me. There is a saying in Balochi language, that if you give me a glass of water, I owe you in my entire life. In fact you did more.”

You mentioned about refugees ‘moving on’ – where do they go? Asylum seekers often go into Home Office accommodation to sit out the wait until their claim is decided, but refugees go all over the place: to become lodgers or to share a house, sometimes to hostels or the YMCA. It depends on what they need. It’s hard for them to rent as prices and deposits are high and it’s hard to find a guarantor as a refugee. If a placement comes to an end, sometimes we will host again. What key advice can you give hosts? 1. Treat people as you would any honoured guest coming to your place: flowers in a vase, towels on the bed, some toiletries. 2. Always give them a front door key. 3. Don’t ask direct questions about their story – if they want to tell you, they will. It’s not a price for hosting. 4. Eat together at least once a week but not every night. 5. Be clear about boundaries and what matters to you in your home. Guests need to know. If your kids have left home, or you’re looking to repurpose that spare room, or if you just want to do something to help those needing to flee their homes, perhaps hosting is for you. www.refugeesathome.org

The role of Ruddy belongs to Miles Teller, whose paternal grandfather was Jewish and the fact that he resembles a young Richard Gere is no bad thing. The only challenge you face with The Offer is not watching all 10 episodes in one night. TV

Better Than Ever Though it breaks our collective hearts to say it, the final season of Better Things has arrived on BBC2. If you haven’t seen it, cram all the past seasons on BBC iplayer and experience the magic that is actress Pamela Adlon in one of the best comedy dramas ever made. Semi-autobiographical, the show is about divorced Jewish actress Sam trying to raise three daughters while holding the reins of her eccentric English mother (Celia Imrie). For the record, you don’t have to be an emotional menopausal woman to enjoy it, just a human with heart.

Andrew Garfield’s mum Lyn would have been so proud of him. The actor, who was Oscar-nominated for his performance in Tick, Tick… BOOM! lost his mother to cancer just before filming the bio-pic about composer Andrew Garfield in Tick, Tick... BOOM! Jonathan Larson. While promoting the !film, Andrew spoke of his grief, saying: “For a period of time I didn’t want to, and I wasn’t able to, do anything. I was kind of wasted and the world didn’t make sense, and it still doesn’t, because I miss her greatly, and I hope it never makes sense because I always want to miss her.” Thankfully the loving son found his way back to work and on 27 July appears in Under The Banner Of Heaven on Disney+, in which he plays a detective and devout Mormon investigating the real-life murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in the Mormon stronghold of Salt Lake City. Garfield, who is already nominated for an Emmy for the series, is moving on to play Sir Richard With mother Lyn Branson in the six-part series Hot Air, which tells the story of the billionaire businessman and his company Virgin Airways, from when it started in 1984 with one leased aeroplane to when it threatened British Airways’ monopoly. Andrew recently reprised his role as Spider-Man in 2021’s The Spider-Man: No Way Home, so he knows how to get around with a web, but portraying Branson will doubtless secure his way home in the future from wherever Virgin flies.

If you’ve lost your mojo then doctor-psychiatrist turned singer-pianist Jeremy Sassoon has a remedy. MOJO (Musicians of Jewish Origin) at the Edinburgh Fringe is a journey through the golden era of Gershwin and the Great American Songbook right up to the present day, honouring artists such as Carole King, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Randy Newman and Amy Winehouse. Jeremy was musical director of his hospital revue for three years and since ‘perfoming’ in a different kind of ‘theatre’ has headlined at Ronnie Scott’s and been featured on BBC R4’s Desert Island Discs. In MOJO, he charts the history of Jewish songwriters, narrating their stories and performing the songs at the piano with drum and bass accompaniment for an evening of really uplifting entertainment. The Zohan star is doing an adaptation of Fiona Rosenbloom’s 2005 teen novel You Are SO Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah!,!, which tells the story of Stacy Friedman’s Jennifer Aniston preparations for her bimah performance and party. The comedy will feature Sandler as the dad, Morton, with possibly his teen daughters Sadie and Sunny as siblings and his wife Jackie as... well, who knows? As Jewish actress Idina Menzel and comedian Sarah Sherman have also agreed to star, we can safely say this won’t be like any batmitzvah you’ve ever been to or would ever get made in Blighty. Sandler is too out and proud for the liking of many British Jewish performers, but not for us.

e are creatures of habit, particularly when it comes to holidays. Booking the same hotel year after year in the same Spanish/Italian/Greek resort is the norm for a lot of people. Familiarity rarely breeds contempt if returning means the staff know your name, have seen your children grow and pre-empt your requests Covid meant an enforced absence from our favourites and removing the right to travel made us realise how much of the world there is still to see. But as new is sometimes daunting, rather than boldly going where you have never been before, why not shake things up in your preferred place? Portugal is our preferred place as it was where my late mother had an apartment, which allowed us extended summer stays. Sadly that option has been taken away, so we have had to rethink our sojourns to the Algarve and find spots to make new memories. It’s worth noting that breaking up a fortnight with overnighters elsewhere makes a holiday feel longer, which

is great when there have been so few. And this is why after years of walking from the flat to the beach in Olhos D’Agua, we hit the road and headed to the rolling mountains clad in heavy forest on the way to Monchique. Set among pine, oak and eucalyptus trees, the little market town of Monchique is a world apart from the Algarve beaches and more similar to those found in France. Charming is the word for it as there are no high street brands or chains, just cafes, curio shops and sculptures made by the resident artists. We stayed at The Monchique Resort & Spa, which is the only property of its kind in this undiscovered area and its modern design dominates the unspoiled surroundings, but not in a bad way. Cool, efficient and silent, the hotel is reminiscent of a Swiss health spa and the treatments for face and body reflect that too. This is a place to really relax, lie down a lot in the spacious suite and eat excellent food on a dining terrace with uninterrupted views of the mountains and ocean. Bringing kids? Then the forest walk and

bathing. followed by a meet-thealpacas or a round of traditional Portuguese games, will tire them out. Ideal for a weekend break in the autumn when the western Algarve is still warm, Monchique was a revelation to us. The Monchique Resort is reminiscent of a Swiss health spa Once on a roll, we took a break from the traditional hotels and went rogue by staying at Casa De Mondo. The family farmhouse with deluxe cabins on site is a real Portuguese experience in the hills away from the madding crowd.

As an unimaginative cook, the chance to participate in a Portuguese cookery class and then eat the dishes was fun, instructive and broadened my own menu. The light and eclectically-furnished Vert suite was where we slept and I’d like to reserve it at least twice a year if the warm and hospitable hosts allow it. Unable to entirely stay away from the place we know, Olhos D’Agua, we booked into The Patio Suite Hotel, which is close to The Pine Cliffs in Praia da Falésia but not as pricey. Eseentially, The Patio is an aparthotel of the kind celebs stay in when on location and the staff are equally on the ball when it comes to providing that level of service. The open-space lobby leads into the restaurant, where buffets

are set up for breakfast and dinner, and it was wonderful to just drop in there instead of loading up at the supermarket as usual. And the food is good – I can’t recall a fish/meat/pasta or salad dish that wasn’t on offer. An all-inclusive includes drink, too, and this really works for a family, as do the large suites with even larger bathrooms and cooking facilities. The beach is a 15-minute walk, but there’s a shuttle for the lazy and the staff don’t like to see their guests struggle. In fact, returning to Olhos D’Agua was easier than I thought it would be because of the warm welcome at The Patio by the general manager, Joaquim Lemos da Costa. A fascinating history and friendly locals enchant Louisa Walters

Most surprising is the fact that the best ones (in my opinion) are not in the town of Belém, where they originated, but at Manteigaria in the Time Out Market, itself a must-visit for foodies, drinkers and lovers of life. We stayed at The One Palácio da Anunciada, just steps away from the high-end shops, should that be your thing, and the cultural district, should that be it as well, and a few more steps (albeit uphill ones) from everything else, for this is a small yet hilly city. Housed in a 16th-century palace, the hotel has 83 light, spacious bedrooms with blond wood furniture and blue plates prettying up white walls. Ours overlooked the court-

yard where breakfast is served – a la carte, which makes a refreshing and civilised change from buffets, which always mean I eat too much and have no room for lunch. And when you’re clocking up 20,000 steps a day

It is worth a visit, though, as the guides are very knowledgeable. In 1497, the king ordered Jews either to convert to Christianity or leave the country and all the synagogues of Lisbon were given to Christian religious orders. It wasn’t until May 1904 that a new shul was inaugurated – the first to be built in Portugal since the late 15th century. In 2006, a memorial to the Lisbon Jews massacred in 1506 was erected in Rossio Square. On a three-hour walking tour with a ToursByLocals guide we learnt about the earthquake of 1755 that destroyed much of the city and visited the oldest undamaged area still standing, where we saw the site of a former synagogue. We learned that Lisbon is a city of seven hills (though it felt I walked up 700!) and that the cobbles that line the pavements are very slippery when wet. A leader of worth It is apt that during the leadership contest for our new prime minister we read the parsha of Pinchas, a pivotal moment in the book of Numbers where God commands Moses to pass on the mantle of leadership to Joshua ahead of their entry into the promised land. The Torah describes the key quality that makes Joshua the right person for the job as ruach bo – someone who has spirit within him (27:18). The commentaries explain that either he had the quality of being able to address each individual appropriately (Rashi), or was someone who is worthy of standing before God as a leader (Sforno), or that he acts

independently and is not swayed by others (Ha’amek Davar). He is clearly eminently qualified to lead a people that Moses had previously and challengingly called “rebels”. Yet there is another obvious contender for leadership: the namesake of this parsha, Pinchas. He too is praised by God for the swift action he took to stop an overt act of immorality and halt the plague rampaging through the Jewish people, killing 24,000. Although he is branded a zealot, he is rewarded with eternal priesthood for having “avenged my vengeance” (25:11). God further bestows a brit shalom (covenant of peace) – both a reward and a gentle rebuke. Perhaps this divine blessing was a method to help Pinchas cope with the emotional impact of committing such

a deed, his new vocation bringing tranquillity to the soul (Netziv). Or rather it harkens to the words that Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel teaches in Pirkei Avot (1:18): “On three things does the world stand: on justice, on truth and on peace.” While Pinchas acted appropriately in meting out justice, this covenant of peace indicated that the rest of his life would have to be tempered in a more measured pursuit of service of God. To maintain a healthy balance, justice and truth need to be partnered with peace as well. Rabbi Lord Sacks z”l pointed out the difference between our moral duties as individuals and the political decisions taken on behalf of a nation. Pinchas made a political decision through his action to stop thousands dying, but salvation by zealot is no real

solution for a leader. Politics must be as moral as possible if a nation is to flourish in the long run. Pinchas is not Joshua’s foil, but he demonstrates that the role of a leader is not to act impulsively and with personal zeal, even if there is

truth in this action. The Gemara in Avodah Zara exhorts us to pray for the shlomah – peace of the government. Let us pray that the hopeful candidates competing for No 10 can channel the qualities of Joshua to be worthy, peaceful leaders.

“The Eternal One would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.” (Exodus 33:11) While the summer holidays are a time that we can make treasured memories, they also bring stress for parents. As I know full well, with three of my own, trying to give your children that ‘perfect summer’ can bring a lot of undue pressure – especially when trying to juggle it with working, running the house and everything else. The first thing to say to anyone looking for inspiration is please don’t turn to our patriarchs and matriarchs for parenting advice. One of the first things we see in our Torah is Abraham attempting to sacrifice Isaac… and it doesn’t get much better from there. Isaac and Rebecca set their kids against each other, taking one side each, and Jacob’s poor parenting skills include favouring one son, Joseph, so much that his 11 siblings try to murder him. I think it is better to look to God as the parental role model. Just as we must all do in life, in the Torah we see

a God who adapts as needs change. At the start, in the Garden of Eden, God is very instructive – telling Adam and Eve not to eat the forbidden fruit and expelling them when they do. But through the Torah, God learns to be more patient, to be where the people are at and to support them. By the time Moses is leading the Jewish people in the wilderness, we see a much more forgiving and understanding God, giving Moses help to deal with an increasingly grumpy people stranded in the unrelenting heat. As we, too, struggle in the heat, I think of what Moses asks from God – to be panim el panim (face to face). What Moses wants most from God is face time, and that is true of what our children want of us. We can spend lots of time and money creating amazing experiences or going on incredible holidays – but the most important thing is to be present and in the moment. Something we learned during the pandemic was how precious that face time with our children is, and this summer gives us a chance to recapture that. What we can learn from our Torah is that the next six weeks is not about spending a fortune or creating the most magical holidays ever, but simply making time to be panim el panim.

It’s worth being one step ahead to avoid unnecessary stress.
