NATIONAL LIFESAVING DAY RAISES £2M FOR MDA UK Over the 36-hour campaign, from Sunday 29th – Monday 30th November, the entire community came together to help Magen David Adom UK exceed its fundraising target of £2,000,000. Our 36-hour fundraising initiative culminated with a live-stream event on Monday 30th November, watched by over 1,400 people. The incredible Rob Rinder hosted the event, which showcased the breadth and depth of MDA, Israel’s only National Medical and Blood |

Emergency Service. Rob explained, “For me, MDA encompasses all that is good and great about Israel, which is why I am such a passionate supporter and why I’m here tonight.” Viewers heard messages of support from celebrities including Gal Gadot and Fauda’s Lior Raz, and enjoyed entertainment provided by Master Mentalist Lior Suchard, musician Idan Raichel and many more. At the end of the show, MDA UK phone lines were ringing off the hook. Donations came flooding in,

taking the total raised over the £2million target, to £2,080,000 - and the donations were still coming in days afterwards! Sopwell House was home for the MDA UK team for the day. All hands were on deck, manning the phone lines in a Covid-19 friendly environment. They were joined by longstanding MDA supporters, Susie Segal and Malcolm Carter (pictured), who not only donate generously to the organisation but were also helping to fundraise for MDA.

A BLOODMOBILE IN MEMORY OF AN INSPIRATIONAL LEADER “Acts of kindness never die” Rabbi Sacks z”l

The Jewish News initiated a crowdfunding campaign with MDA UK to purchase a bloodmobile in memory of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks z”l. Rabbi Sacks was an ardent supporter of Israel and a champion for Magen David Adom. On the day he was ennobled in 2009, Lord Sacks spoke at the MDA UK Fundraising Dinner and gave a stirring and memorable appeal. MDA UK Board Member and then Dinner Chair, Nicholas Springer, recalls, “He attended our annual dinner on the day he was introduced to the House of Lords. He delivered the best appeal speech we ever heard. He is sorely missed both within and outside our community and the bloodmobile we are dedicating in is memory will be a fitting tribute.” Rabbi Lionel Rosenfeld of Marble Arch Synagogue, where Lord Sacks was once the minister, has lent his support to this campaign. He described Rabbi Sacks as “our moral compass and spokesman. Donating to MDA for this vehicle in his name is a wonderful way to honour what he held dear – the sanctity of life. As Rabbi Sacks himself wrote: “Grant strength to those who see to the needs of the injured and sick, and open our hearts in prayer and our hands in generosity, so that by our actions we may bring comfort, healing and support.” So far, the campaign has raised £40,000 of £135,000. MPs press for Iran action Pro-Israel MPs have given their support to a parliamentary committee’s recommendation that the major branch of Iran’s military be proscribed as a terrorist group, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. The latest call for the government to brand as terrorists the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its 200,000 military personnel came in this week’s foreign affairs committee (FAC) report. An 11-member committee, chaired by Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat and with a Tory majority, it produced its fifth report on Iran this week, and it was by far its most strident. “We recommend proscribing the IRGC in its entirety for its clear and enduring support for terrorists and non-state actors working to undermine stability in the region,” the committee wrote. Believed to be the most powerful branch of Iran’s military, the IRGC controls strategic arms and geographic positions, patrols the world’s busiest oil lane through the Strait of Hormuz. It also oversees the Quds Force, which acts throughout the Middle East in support of militias, including on Israel’s borders. Tugendhat said the IRGC met the criteria for proscription in the Terrorism Act 2000, and while any decision will be taken by the foreign secretary, Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) was quick to press the case. “We strongly endorse the recommendations,” said CFI grandees. “It reinforces the

Huge fines for hosting harm Online platforms that fail to protect users or remove harmful content face multimillionpound fines and being blocked under new laws, the government has announced. However, proposals for criminal liability for senior executives at non-compliant firms appear to have been scaled back, with the government aiming to bring those powers into force through secondary legislation. Ahead of publishing a full response to the Online Harms White Paper, home secretary Priti Patel and digital secretary Oliver Dowden said the proposed laws would create a “new age of accountability” for social media platforms. Under the rules, to appear in an Online Safety Bill next year, Ofcom – in its new confirmed role as regulator – will have the power to fine companies up to £18 million or 10 percent of global turnover, whichever is higher, for failing to abide by a duty of care to users, particularly children and the vulnerable. Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl welcomed the announcement of heavy fines for social media companies who breach the legislation. However she added: “With regards to antisemitism, this legislation may fall short unless the newly appointed social media regulator adopts the IHRA definition of antisemitism and judges companies’ protection of Jewish users against that standard.”

Corbyn unveils social justice project

Jeremy Corbyn this week unveiled plans for a new organisation to support social justice, peace and human rights in the UK and around the world. The former Labour leader said his Peace and Justice Project would “bring people together” to create “a future that works for the many, not the few”. Corbyn, who sits as an independent MP in the House of Commons after being denied the Labour whip because of his response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s report into antisemitism in the party under his watch, is to launch the initiative next month. The project is aimed at supporting social and environmental justice, peace and internationalism and will be focused on combating

poverty, inequality and unaccountable corporate power, the Islington North MP said. Sir Keir Starmer’s predecessor added that it would promote peace, global co-operation, climate justice, self-determination, democracy and human rights by working with social movements and trade unions and building networks for progressive change. It will be formally launched on 17 January 2021 following an online event. Panellists will include Labour peer Christine Blower, Unite union general secretary Len McCluskey and Labour MP Zarah Sultana, who previously wrote that she supports “violent resistance” against Israel and would celebrate the deaths of former Labour leader Tony Blair, former US president George W Bush and Israeli president Benjamin Netanyahu.

First survivor receives Covid vaccine A woman believed to be the first Holocaust survivor to receive the Covid-19 vaccine has urged others to follow suit, writes Jack Mendel. German-born Eve Kugler, who turns 90 next month, had the Pfizer/BioNTech jab at the Royal Free Hospital. She said: “I was so very excited and happy to get the vaccine. I even told my friends and children in America about it. I think it is the right thing to do and I urge everyone to take it up. It is giving us life.” Born in the German town of Halle, Eve escaped fromNazi-occupiedEuropetotheUSin1941,working as a journalist before moving to London in 1990. She was awarded a BEM in 2019 for services to Holocaust education and speaks to thousands of people a year through the Holocaust Educational Trust. Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: “Our beloved and brave Holocaust survivors have been shielding and, in many

cases, they have been alone, but typically of our survivors, they’ve managed through the toughest of circumstances and inspired us all. “It is wonderful that Eve has received the vaccine and hopefully many more survivors will follow.” Meanwhile, the pandemic Jewish death rate has hit a seven-month high, according to figures collated by the Board of Deputies with seven of the community’s largest burial boards. These show that 20 burials took place in the week ending 11 December, bringing the number of Coronavirus-related deaths in the community to one short of the grim landmark of 600 (more than 60,000 have died nationally). INSPECTIONS DELAYED Hendon man’s eighth Covid plasma donation The restart of inspections of Jewish education in Jewish schools has been pushed back again to the start of the summer term owing to the pandemic. Pikuach, the body responsible for inspecting Jewish education in maintained Jewish schools, had been due to begin its Section 48 work in January, but this week said it

was delaying them by a term. The announcement mirrors that of national school inspectorate Ofsted, which is delaying the restart of its in-person audits as Covid-19 infections remain high. A Jewish man from Hendon will make his eighth Covid-19 plasma trial donation this week, as NHS bosses pay tribute to his help in giving antibodies. Rael Gamsu, 52, who has recovered from coronavirus, will give a remarkable eighth convalescent plasma donation at Edgware donor centre on Thursday, a trip that also marks his 100th overall blood donation since his early 20s.

“I first donated convalescent plasma in September after hearing about the trial from NHS colleagues, and have been returning regularly over the past few months,” he said. “I had previously donated blood and platelets and wanted to help. The staff at Edgware are fantastic and go out of their way to help. I wear hearing aids and one of the donor nurses found a trans-

Israel’s new UK ambassador has pledged to represent “the whole Jewish community with all its streams” as she tackled for the first time concerns that led to a petition calling for her appointment to be blocked. Former Settlements Minister Tzipi Hotovely has previously attracted the ire of Reform leaders in America and Rabbi Laura JannerKlausner, the UK’s former leader of Reform Judaism issued an unprecedented warning ahead of her arrival in the UK two months ago. However, in a wide-ranging interview with Jewish News, Hotovely, 42, insisted her views were “in strong contrast” to those of her movement. She said: “In order to have a dialogue, you need to listen and learn about people’s concerns and what they care about. This is a benefit of being an ambassador, I can listen instead of just talking as politicians usually do. I’ll be an ambassador not just to the UK but also the whole

Jewish community with all its streams.” Hotovely, who was the youngest MK when she entered the Knesset and is a close ally of Benjamin Netanyahu, is fully aware her reputation proceeds her. “You know my record as a politician with all my ideological thoughts,” she says, without trying to whitewash controversial previous comments on non-Orthodox Judaism (she once accused Reform Jews of turning the issue of prayer at the Kotel into a political dispute), settlements (strongly supportive) or the two-state solution (strongly opposed). But, addressing for the first time concerns expressed by some British Jews, she said: “If people have criticism of the Israeli government it’s absolutely OK, it’s part of freedom of speech. Everyone has a political opinion, but here I definitely know I’m serving my government and the people of Israel so I’m coming here with a much broader perspective on every issue.”

So would she, for example, be holding back on her views that Israel is entitled to the entire West Bank, ending all hopes for two states? “It’s easy to ask me that as a politician,” she said. “Now I’m respectful to the ambassador’s role.” On annexation, too, a plan she had strongly backed, she would not say if she felt it should be enacted. She was also keen to set the record straight after appearing to suggest during an online event this month about Jewish refugees from Arab lands that the Nakba was an “Arab lie” – drawing fresh criticism. She insisted she was not denying the displacement of people when Israel was created, but that “to speak about the Arab catastrophe without mentioning that almost one million Jews were expelled is not saying the truth. Jews were always part of the Middle East”. Turning to the region’s recent normalisation deals, she said she had very much “felt at home” when she met the ambassadors of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain recently and discussions have begun about interfaith projects they

can work on together. “Often when political agreements are signed, it stays at the political level. Here it’s so clear it goes business to business and people to people. Look how many Israelis are already going to Dubai and want to go to Bahrain.” She said two more deals were in the pipeline and could be announced soon. Closer to home, she aims to continue the trend of new record bilateral trade figures postCovid, and hopes for a second post-Brexit trade deal focusing on environmental technology and other issues where Israel is at the forefront. One of her priorities will be reaching out to young Jews where she acknowledged a trend towards disconnection to Israel compared with previous generations amid concern over the conflict. “There is so much to show about what Israel has achieved that is bigger than the conflict – liberal values like liberty, diversity. About one million Arabs are part of the Israeli population and they can get to the top roles. When you get a rejection time after time from the Palestinian side, you can’t take responsibility for both sides of the conflict.” Hotovely praised the vibrancy and Zionism of British Jewry. “We need to make sure the voice of Rabbi Sacks and the voice of British Jewry will be heard in Israel. I hope to be that bridge.” • Reform Judaism hosted an event for Ambassador Tzipi Hotovely yesterday, just days after the movement’s former senior rabbi told her to “be ambassadorial and don’t incite hatred”. The event, confirmed by two sources, was advertised only to significant Reform donors and supporters, and was on the heels of stinging criticism from Janner-Klausner, who until October was the senior Reform rabbi in the UK. One source alerted to the event alluded to Hotovely’s opposition to a Palestinian state, saying: “This event would be controversial under any circumstances but particularly after Rabbi Laura’s criticism, and Hotovely’s subsequent remarks, in which she continued to make other inflammatory comments.”

Referring to the use of oil and candlelight during Chanukah, he said: “As one of the world’s major oil producers, it is a subject the UAE knows something about.” The Ambassador reminded viewers that the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai was lit up last week to symbolise the beginning of Chanukah. “Over time, I hope Chanukah celebrations will become unremarkable across the Arab world. Jewish people throughout the region should be able to mark their religious festivals as freely and joyously as the UAE’s Jewish community,” he added. Cleverly expressed his hope that the normalisation of relations would “lead to peace in the Middle East”. Almost 200 people joined an online Jewish leadership conference on Sunday organised by the United Synagogue, with sessions aimed at sharing ideas. Organisers hailed it as “the largest attendance ever” annual event, which included 16 breakout sessions and 30 presenters. The day began with an introduction from Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and among the keynote speakers was Lord (Leslie) Turnberg, president of the All Party Britain-Israel Parliamentary Group, who resigned from the parliamentary Labour group last year, citing “overt antisemitism that permeates the party”.

Twitter has been urged to ban former BNP leader Nick Griffin after he tweeted about a “lockdown concentration camp”. Griffin shared an anti-coronavirus lockdown post on social media this week, depicting Health Secretary Matt Hancock signing the Holocaust Educational Trust’s book of commitment, with the phrase “Science can set us free”. Lord John Mann, the government’s independent antisemitism adviser, called for the social media giant to take action against Griffin. He told Jewish News: “Twitter should deal with these has-been nobodies desperately seeking attention by their crass outrages.”

Jewish leaders have pledged to do more to promote “Jewish unity” in a declaration intended to halt the drift between Israel and the diaspora, writes Joy Faulk. Those organising the Declaration of Our Destiny, signed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his successor, Defence Minister Benny Gantz in Jerusalem this week, said it sought to “prioritise common ground”, warning of “alienation and indifference” between Jews in Israel and those outside. The venture, which had the input of tens of thousands of Jews around the world, was initiated by the Genesis Philanthropy Group (GPG), whose founder warned that the “only true cure is our common will and mutual effort to turn the tide”. Presented to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in September, the document says

LIBERAL JUDAISM NAMES NEW CHIEFS Liberal Judaism has appointed Rabbi Charley Baginsky as its new CEO, with Shelley ShocolinskyDwyer becoming COO. Both will take up their positions in January. Charley and Shelley have been interim directors of the movement since March. Liberal Judaism chair Ruth Seager said: “In the face of the troubling times, Liberal Judaism has flourished under Charley and Shelley’s leadership. JW3 LIGHTS ONLINE SPARK AT CHANUKAH

JW3’s Chanukah Spark Nights free online events began last Thursday with thousands tuning in. The nightly events “to light up the dark winter nights” began with the lighting of the JW3 chanukiah followed by a series of big names including comedy legend and Jewish News columnist Jackie Mason. Starting at 6.30pm, the events promised “inspirational words” from people including actress and comedian Jessica Chaffin, TV star and barrister Rob Rinder, author Howard Jacobson and musician Ivor Novello.

Jewish Agency will look at ‘Messianics’ allegation A major row has erupted over whether or not the Jewish Agency is allowing missionary activity in its Galilee education facility, Bikat Kinarot, writes Jenni Frazer. The Agency strenuously denies the charges, made by the Beynenu anti-missionary group — but is conducting an inquiry and has warned of a severe crackdown if the allegations prove to have any basis. For several months, Beynenu has been complaining that the Jewish Agency, which runs educational centres all over the country, has allowed Christian missionaries, or “Messianics”, to operate on the Galilee site. In its latest allegations, it has put together videos that it claims show Christians, operating under the banner of the Canadian Christian Zionist group Return Ministries, identifying their true missionary intentions to convert Israeli Jews.

Bikat Kinarot, the target of Beynenu’s current claims, provides services to lone soldiers, new immigrants, and those preparing to enter the army. Beynenu says these are vulnerable people and easy prey for the missionaries. The Jewish Agency, which acknowledges a formal agreement with Return Ministries, categorically denies that missionary activity is taking place. Instead, the Agency says, Return Ministries “provide volunteers and assist with construction, maintenance and landscaping work on the campus. This is done within a very clear contractual frame-

work, stipulating that any kind of missionary activity is strictly prohibited”. The Jewish Agency insists that Beynenu’s videos “are heavily edited, using old and irrelevant footage and containing false statements”. But it admits that “they do raise grave questions and concerns for us regarding our relationship with Return Ministries”. This relationship is now being closely examined: the Agency emphasises that “any involvement of Return Ministries or the Aliyah Return Centre, beyond the very clearly demarcated roles… is in clear

violation of their agreement with the Jewish Agency”. The Return Ministries themselves have repeatedly denied any missionary activity, insisting that their volunteers, often elderly Christians from all over north America, were involved in picking grapes or harvesting olive trees. But it is not just alleged missionary activity that concerns the Jewish Agency. This week, its legal adviser, Bosmat Chelouche, wrote to Beynenu leaders, Shannon Nuszen and Rabbi Tovia Singer, after they had contacted employees, managers and members of the Jewish Agency board of governors, attacking the agreement with the Return Ministries. In response, last Friday, Attorney Chelouche reiterated the Jewish Agency’s insistence that there was no missionary activity taking place on its Galilee centre. She added that Beynenu had no access to the Agency’s email inboxes.

MDA UK GETS BLOOD CENTRE BOOST An American donor has created a $10 million (£7.4 million) matching grant for Magen David Adom UK. The Marcus Foundation, from Bernie and Billi Marcus, made the grant available to inspire more donations towards MDA’s £96 million project to build a national blood services centre in Israel. MDA says that with this grant, it hopes to raise the remaining funds quickly. The six-storey facility, with its three lowest floors underground, will be shielded to protect Israel’s blood reserves against missile, chemical and biological attack.

SHULS TO USE MASKS FOR LIP-READERS The United Synagogue is introducing free transparent masks for its rabbis and service leaders to help those who lip-read following a recommendation from the Jewish Deaf Association. The disposable face coverings, which look like the regular blue masks except for a see-through panel, allow those who rely on lip-reading to follow the service and can be worn by rabbis, gabbaim (wardens), chairs or anyone addressing the community.

Parents’ anger over meat-free menu A Jewish primary school was criticised by parents this week after removing meat from its lunchtime menu, writes Adam Decker. A group of parents, who wished to remain anonymous, voiced their concern to Jewish News this week after Clore Shalom headteacher Karen Cohen told them meat was now off the menu, in what many said was a “cost-cutting exercise”. The price of school meals at the 215-pupil school in Radlett, which was rated ‘good’ by Ofsted this year, will remain the same at £2.80, but some parents were concerned about “an obvious lack of protein” in the menus from new provider HCL. On its website, HCL says it is “passionate about fresh, local and seasonal ingredients that help us to provide dishes that are popular with students and comply with healthy eating standards”. Yet parents said its sample menu included several offerings of pasta, jacket potatoes, potato wedges, macaroni cheese, baguettes, sweet potato slices, pizza, rice, and chips, much of it with cheese as a topping. Cohen, who said she had consulted, told parents

She added that the school was “now able to offer milk and dairy foods to the menu, along with fish, eggs and other sources of protein”, with the kitchen being “deep cleaned” over the winter break and new kitchenware provided.

Numerous parents were unconvinced, however. “It’s all carbs,” said one. “They’re playing it like it’s healthy, but there’s no protein. It’s horrific.” Another said the shift to pescatarian menus had been “a complete surprise”, and that government guidance required schools to offer meat at least three times a week. A third said: “It is worrying that cheesy pasta dishes served with additional starchy food such as potatoes make regular appearances on the menu. “Children who do not like meat imitation products such as Quorn, which are themselves often highly processed, may make an unhealthy choice of carbs.” In response, Cohen said: “We are aware that a small number of parents are concerned about the change. We have engaged with them. By and large we have an excellent relationship with our parent body, the vast majority of whom support and trust us to make decisions in the best interest of their children.” She said the change came about because of “a failure by our previous catering supplier to address and resolve problems”, but added that pupils had the option of bringing in packed lunch.

Police appeal after collision Police are looking to speak to the driver of a second vehicle that was close by when a car mounted a pavement and struck pedestrians in Stamford Hill, injuring

five people. None of those involved is in a lifethreatening condition. The driver of the vehicle involved is assisting the Metropolitan Police with their

enquiries and the force said it was keen to speak to the driver of a Toyota Previa who was in “close proximity” to the collision and may be able to provide further details.

GLOBAL CANDLELIGHTING EVENT More than 5,000 Jewish primary school pupils from around the world were due to join a virtual candlelighting ceremony for the seventh night of Chanukah last night. The first ‘Unite with Light’, organised by the Partnerships for Jewish School with JLGB and UJIA, is the brainchild of Broughton Jewish Primary School teacher Dovi Colman, and the event was expected to link up 200 classes from 25 schools globally, and includes the lighting of a menorah in Israel.

RILEY LIBEL HIGH COURT CHALLENGE The latest round of a libel challenge by lawyers acting for Countdown presenter Rachel Riley and Vox political reporter Mark Sivier reached the High Court last Friday, as lawyers argued about claims of online abuse, harassment and bullying. The allegations stem from vitriol surrounding antisemitism in the Labour Party, against which Riley has been a vocal critic. Sivier, who has raised more than £100,000 for legal fees through crowdfunding, called Riley’s legal action “a vexatious attack”.

‘I need to believe the Uyghurs can survive and not be erased’

After her whole family is jailed, Nursiman Abdureshid pleads with Jews to take a stand

Wearing a traditional headscarf, her young daughter being led out of screenshot, Nursiman Abdureshid sits down in her apartment in Turkey and recalls the day “when the communication with my family was cut off ”, writes Adam Decker. Sent to vast camps built to “re-educate” millions of China’s Uyghur minority, her family received mysterious and lengthy prison sentences for “terrorism”. Her father got 16 years, her mother 13 years, one brother 15 years and her other brother seven years. Nursiman, who came to Turkey in 2015 to study for a master’s degree, has neither seen nor heard from them for 43 months. Despite repeated requests, she has not been told where they are being held, or if they are still alive. “It was 18 June 2017 when communication cut off,” she recalls in a soft voice, eyes lowering. “The Chinese government often cuts communications, but then I started to hear about concentration camps and people being arrested and I began to worry.” She called everyone she knew and was eventually told that her brother and father were being questioned but that her mother was still at home. “They said, ‘Don’t call, she’s afraid, the local official told her not to take calls from abroad.’ That was the beginning.” Petite and speaking word-perfect English, Shanghai-educated Nursiman, 32, knew of “political study” mornings at the village hall, after which Uyghurs would work, and assumed her father and brother were attending them. “I thought that must be it,” she says. “But then I heard more and more about the camps and I couldn’t get any information. My friends stopped replying, then they blocked me on social media group chats. Finally, I got a simple message: ‘There is no one in your home.’ It meant my mum had also been taken.” Her mother is a housewife, her father retired, her brothers businessmen, she says. “We are a normal family. At first, I kept silent, thinking ‘there is no reason to arrest them, it must be wrong information’. But in 2018 I got the same message – your family is arrested, there is nobody in your home.” For three years she asked Chinese embassies for information. In June this year was she told the sentences her relatives had been given. “I asked why, they said ‘terrorism’. I asked if there was any evidence, they said ‘no’. That was it.

“My family is not religious. They have nothing to do with terrorism. It is a fake accusation, like with all the Uyghurs. It is what the Chinese government says because it knows the world suffers from terrorism. They want to erase the Uyghurs.” Nursiman’s nieces may be missing too. “I have no idea where they are. It has been more than three years. I do not know if they are still alive. “I listen to the testimony of those who were in the camps and my big fear is for my family’s physical and m e n t a l health. Sometimes I dream that we lost them.” Her last contact was in June 2017,

but three months earlier Nursiman’s friends’ parents began calling their sons and daughters studying abroad. “They were saying ‘come back or stop calling, the situation is getting serious’. So, I offered this to my father when we spoke. “He said ‘nobody told us not to take calls from abroad, but keep the calls short and don’t call every day.’ The police had already blocked one number because of long calls. Shortly after this, we lost contact.” I ask h o w old her family members are. “My father was 54 years old. My mother was 51. My Nursiman with her message

elder brother is 34. My younger brother is 30.” I ask whether when she says ‘was’ she means they were 54 and 51 in 2017. She quickly apologises. “No, now, they are 54 and 51 now, sorry, I just used the wrong word.” Her head bows and, for the first time, her voice breaks. In common with other Uyghur witnesses who speak out, Nursiman is being pressured to “come back” (she says by whom, but would prefer it not to be printed). Only one person she knows with senior connections to the Chinese state felt secure enough to tell her the truth: “Don’t go back, it’s not safe.” She knows about the Holocaust, and that it occurred in part because the Nazis successfully dehumanised Jews in the eyes of others. “I blamed the Han Chinese for not standing up to the Chinese Communist Party for abusing and discriminating against the Uyghurs,” she says. “But then I realised, little by little, government propaganda was showing the Uyghurs as bad people, as criminals, as sub-human. That is why normal Han Chinese people support their crimes. “When I was a child, I hardly saw any Chinese [in Kashgar]. From 2008, I saw more and more. They treated the Uyghurs badly, like filth. In the minds of the Han Chinese, Uyghurs are very low, second-class citizens. The government gave them that message.” Asked whether there is hope for the Uyghurs, Nursiman replies: “It’s difficult. The world relies on China. For Covid-19, most countries begged China for masks. I’m compelled to speak out, says Mirvis The Chief Rabbi has attacked China’s persecution of its Uyghur Muslim minority in an intervention that will add pressure on governments, companies and consumers to act. Writing in The Guardian on Tuesday,

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis (pictured) said that, having heard accounts from Uyghurs who had fled, “and reflecting upon the deep pain of Jewish persecution throughout the ages, I feel compelled to speak out”. Speaking out was a duty, particularly at Chanukah,

he said, “when we recall attempts ‘to cause the Jewish faith to be forgotten and to prevent Jews from keeping their traditions’… These words refer back to the cruel oppression of Jews.” Mirvis said the “weight of evidence” of persecution was “overwhelming”, with Uyghurs “beaten if they refuse to renounce their faith, women forced to abort their unborn children then sterilised to prevent

them from becoming pregnant again”. He said in his discussions with senior figures he had “been left feeling that any improvement in the desperate situation is impossible”. Yet, growing up in Apartheid South Africa and ministering in Ireland during the Troubles, ‘impossible’ was a word he often heard; in both places, wrongdoing and conflict came to an end. “Last week marked the 72nd anni-

versary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights… That same year, the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was also adopted,” he wrote. “Both documents, which stand among humanity’s most vital legal and moral proclamations, are at risk of fading into the political periphery if we are not prepared to act upon them.”

Orthodox Jewish hip hop star Nissim Black’s latest release has delighted fans by reimagining the traditional version of Hava Nagila. The Jewish umbrella group said the restrictions were unfair as museums and pools were open.

A Polish wartime diplomat in Istanbul saved hundreds of Jews by issuing them with papers identifying them as Christian, an Israeli investigation has shown. Wojciech Rychlewicz, a consul, issued the documents for free to Jews who could then get visas in countries opposed to admitting Jewish refugees. Rychlewicz never applied for recognition for his actions or advertised them, according to the report.

Tributes have been paid to philanthropist Joseph Safra after he died in Sao Paulo, aged 82. A banker born in Lebanon, Safra was Brazil’s richest man, worth around £16 billion, and bankrolled much of the country’s 120,000-strong Jewish community. His vast real estate portfolio included ‘The Gherkin’ in London. Safra’s Lebanese-Syrian family’s banking connections date back to Ottoman times.

The Chief and China

Some campaigns need to be ‘sold’. Some grievances need to be shouted. Some revulsion needs sifting between agenda-led and genuine. Once in a blue moon, all we need is knowledge. The more we learn about the Chinese state’s persecution of its Uyghur minority in Xinjiang, the more aggrieved, revolted and incensed we feel. In living memory of the Holocaust, a people are being ‘erased’. This week, that burning Jewish revulsion was voiced by one person whose intervention will make a real difference – the Chief Rabbi. In no small act of courage, Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis catapulted this from the corridors to the concert hall. Private discussions were going nowhere, we understand, so he went nuclear. There is no ‘other side’ to it. This week and last, Jewish News has profiled two of the few incomparably brave witnesses to the plight of the Uyghurs at the hands of ethnic Han Chinese authorities. Their stories shock. The accusations: dozens of vast camps, through which millions are taken and many never emerge, housing 60 per cell, so cramped that they cannot sleep. No natural light, shorn hair, names removed, hearing screams 24/7 from the basement, where rape is used on both men and women. Forced sterilisation, ‘re-education’ to rid people of both identity and hope; this is the slow-burn killing of a people’s spirit. What to do against the mighty China? As the Chief Rabbi says, the same was asked about the mighty apartheid regime in South Africa, about the mighty Soviet refusal to let Soviet Jews leave, about the entrenched sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland. In all cases, change was brought by ordinary people. We can do plenty. We can pressure MPs and companies. We can protest. And we can learn about what we buy and where it comes from, after documents this week showed that China uses hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs for hard labour. All we needed was knowledge. It has discreetly been serving as a safety net for the community, providing social work support to vulnerable families, which often prevents the situation deteriorating. The term ‘Arab Jews’, used in reference to your article on Jewish refugees expelled from the Middle East and North Africa, was originally an ill-starred attempt by civic-minded secularists to ensure their inclusion in the ‘Arab Nation’. Arab nationalism, however, had no room for Jews in its body politic. Little fires everywhere in Labour's grassroots RICHARD FERRER EDITOR, JEWISH NEWS

ight months after his accession, the crown barely settled on his brow, and Labour’s new leader already knows: “There’s three of us in this marriage.” The interfering ex just won’t leave him and his party alone. Sir Keir Starmer has talked a terrific game since liberating Labour back in April. His party is now “under new management”, has “entered a new era” and will “reconnect with voters”. Which all sounds just the ticket to a swing voter like me who’s waited a decade for a vaguely sensible alternative to Cameron, May and Johnson. The numbers certainly stack in Starmer’s favour. Between April and November, Politico’s polls of voting intensions have seen the Conservative-Labour divide narrow from 51%-29% to an even-steven 39%-39%. “Oh, Keir-er-er Staaarmer!” If

he keeps going at this rate Labour will win the next election and pip Liverpool to the Premier League. But don’t pop out to Poundland for bunting just yet. Corbyn may not lead but he still lingers; still rules enough hearts and minds to force Starmer into a three-way relationship with two Labour parties – one centre left, one certifiable. One sworn to eradicate Labour antisemitism, one that denies its existence. One that can never allow Corbyn back as an MP and one that still sees him as its figurehead. What a sordid little threesome it is. And the thing about threesomes is only one person can be on top. Marriage is all about compromise but there can be none in this unholy matrimony. So Starmer’s new year resolution must be an ugly divorce from the hard left. He must display the same clear-minded ruthlessness the electorate showed one year ago this week when it handed Labour its worst drubbing since the war. Fail to follow brave words with brave

Senior Unite union official Howard Beckett even accused the meeting called solely to approve the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) action plan on tackling antisemitism of being too focused on a “single agenda”. There are little fires everywhere. If Starmer fiddles, the grassroots will burn. To borrow a phrase made infamous by the Jewish community’s 2018 protest against Corbynite antisemitism, ‘Enough is enough’. There’s not a moment to lose. Or rather, there is a Momentum to lose. Starmer must kick the tyres long before the 2024 election to be confident his bandwagon is up to the arduous four-year journey back to its base and beyond. Voters need to know what Starmer will stand for and, equally, what he will not. He can take heart from history. It has been done before. Neil (now Lord) Kinnock inherited the party from a radical who’d just condemned it to its worst election humiliation in generations. Kinnock’s triumphant speech at the 1985 party conference declared all-out war on the militants and malcontents (which even back then included Corbyn), with their

“impossible promises… far-fetched resolutions pickled into a rigid dogma… outdated misplaced, irrelevant to real needs”. Kinnock purged the party and made it fit for purpose. Of course he was ultimately unable to shift the Iron Lady from Number 10, but today’s incumbent has none of Thatcher’s stature. He’s just in need of an iron. The prize is there for the taking. Starmer has already placed rolling out the EHRC’s 18 key recommendations on eradicating antisemitism top of his 2021 to-do list, but it will count for little if his predecessor has the whip restored. The stain and shame will only fade when former members and MPs hounded out under Corbyn see the coast is finally clear to return. Four years may not be enough to repair the damage. A report published last week by progressive think-tank Compass showed Labour requires a swing of 10.52% – larger than Tony Blair’s in 1997 – to win the additional 124 seats it needs for a majority of one. Starmer needs a landslide, earthquake and volcanic eruption rolled into one. It could take a decade for Labour to develop its vaccine for Corbynism and even then it won’t be wiped out. Like the antisemitism it cultivated, Corbynism constantly mutates. It will return. And when it does it must never be allowed to consume the Labour Party again.

Countries falling over to give peace a chance JENNI FRAZER

ust over a year ago, I attended an amazing summit in London, of Arab representatives from many countries in the Middle East. Constituting themselves as the Arab Council for Regional Integration, the men and women spoke fondly of the Jewish communities they had once housed, of Jewish food and music, and passionately about the boycott of Israel, saying it was doing nobody any good. What these people – who included a politician who was the nephew of the late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat – all wanted, they said, was to re-establish relations with Israel. The younger people were curious to meet their Israeli counterparts; some of the older participants had faced acute and sometimes lifethreatening hostility from their governments, because of their attempt to build bridges. I wrote a lot about this summit but, it must be admitted, more in hope than anything else.

I knew how slowly the tectonic plates shifted in the Middle East. I’d been one of the first across the border when the peace treaty was signed with Egypt, but watched it degenerate into cold peace and the too frequent freezing of diplomatic relations; I covered the signing of Israel’s peace treaty with Jordan and saw that fracture, too, characterised by serious mistrust by the Jordanians of Israel and again, a time lag in the appointment of ambassadors. And yet here we are in the otherwise disaster year of 2020 and the totemic negatives are falling like dominoes, as one country after the other makes a pragmatic decision about how to live with Israel in their midst. In September, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed the Abraham Accords with Israel, followed by Sudan. This week, both Morocco and the kingdom of Bhutan announced they were ready to normalise relations with the Jewish state. Already we have seen a number of “firsts” unthinkable when I covered the London summit, held in conditions of great secrecy, a year ago. This week, an Orthodox Jewish

wedding was held in Dubai – although no one was forthcoming enough to identify the bride and groom by name. It has also been announced that the Dubai Jewish community – and just think about the impact of those three words, and what it means for them to be referred to aloud – will open a Jewish primary school early next year, to cater for the children of the estimated 1,000 Jews now living in the Emirates. Jerusalem’s Deputy Mayor, British-born Fleur Hassan-Nahoum (who grew up in Gibraltar and studied law at Kings College London), took advantage of the Chanukah

break to holiday in Dubai with her family. Young Bahrainis and Emiratis have been leaping at the opportunity to visit Israel, some taking selfies on the steps of the Temple Mount, others fixing to see their technology counterparts so that they can exchange hightech information. It helps, of course, that neither the UAE nor Bahrain has ever been in direct military conflict with Israel. Morocco has had a relatively back-door warm relationship with Israel, not least because it still has a flourishing Jewish community – but Israelis have not been able to visit the country as individual travellers until now, which is likely to change. And the big question mark still hangs over what the Saudis might do next. Publicly, everyone is saying they want the Palestinian situation to be resolved before they go any further. Practically? Let me put it this way, a year ago no one, even the dreamers at the Arab summit in London, thought events would move so fast. Herzl, I think, got it right. “If you will it, it is no dream.”

ight now, at universities all over the country, academics are arguing over whether or not their institutions should adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. This is the definition that was at the centre of one of the most divisive episodes in the Labour Party antisemitism saga, when its former leader, Jeremy Corbyn, fought to the bitter end to prevent the party adopting the definition in full – a fight he ultimately lost. Now, Corbyn’s supporters and other likeminded activist academics are fighting the same fight he did, opposing a definition that has wide support across the Jewish community and is already used by hundreds of local authorities, national and devolved governments, football clubs, regulators, prosecutors and so on. They oppose it because it makes the obvious point that a lot of antisemitism nowadays is expressed through language that refers to Israel instead of, or alongside, Jews. Too often, this academic argument over

definitions loses sight of what really matters: the welfare and safety of Jewish students at British universities. The Community Security Trust (CST)’s new report, Campus Antisemitism in Britain 20182020, aims to put this back at the heart of this debate by showing that the amount of antisemitism affecting Jewish students is much higher than previously acknowledged. CST’s dedicated campus team spent several months contacting Jewish Societies and Jewish students all over the country to build the evidence for this report. They did this in person before the pandemic hit, travelling hundreds of miles to build relationships with students all over the country, and then continued this work remotely since lockdown restrictions came in. We knew that Jewish students probably had lots of reasons not to report antisemitism. They were too busy having fun, making friends, studying, and getting to know their new life. Perhaps, they didn’t know how to

report antisemitism to their university, or they were worried that complaining would be more trouble than it was worth. What we found is that, while most Jewish students have a great time at university without encountering antisemitism, far too many Jewish students do experience prejudice or bigotry, whether on campus, off campus and online. This included antisemitism from the far left, merging their hatred of Israel with suspicion of any Jews who disagree with them, and the far right daubing swastikas and joking about gas chambers. A total of 123 antisemitic incidents in 34 towns and cities is still probably an underestimate, but it paints a worrying picture nonetheless. Worst of all, we found several examples of Jewish students who had heard antisemitic remarks, not from their fellow students, but from the academics who are supposed to be teaching them. Imagine being a young Jewish student in

your first year at university, listening to your professor teaching antisemitism to a lecture hall full of non-Jewish students who don’t know any better. Then, when these students complain to their university, they are told they cannot do so anonymously, leaving them with a choice between saying nothing and potentially risking their grades. That is the experience some Jewish students – thankfully, a minority – reported to CST. This is why it is so important for universities to have independent processes that are able to investigate complaints properly while protecting the students who make them. CST will continue to support Jewish students across the country, but it is time for universities themselves to step up. Instead of arguing against the adoption of the IHRA definition, they should ask Jewish students what they really feel. That is what CST did, and the results are shocking.

Simon Jacobs spent his childhood being treated for a heart condition at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Now he’s helping to run the hospital, hears Micaela Blitz

imon Jacobs is certainly no stranger to hospitals. Having been diagnosed with a minor heart condition at 10 weeks old, he spent much of his childhood as a patient at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Manchester. Now that connection has come full circle, with the proud 28-year-old recently named as one of the hospital’s new governors. Over the next three years, Jacobs hopes to give back to the very place that cared for him after he was diagnosed with a coarctation – or narrowing – of the aorta, meaning his heart has to work harder to pump blood around his body. Alzheimer Society’s 2021 Calendar Robert Speker’s amazing photographs of care home residents recreating classic album covers have been selected to feature in the Alzheimer’s Society Official 2021 Calendar. The quirky images, taken at Sydmar Lodge Care Home in Edgware during the first lockdown in March, show residents posing as Adele, David Bowie and Taylor Swift – and swiftly went viral after they were posted on social media. Other pictures show recreations of albums from Queen, The Clash and Bruce Springsteen. On Twitter, the images have been viewed more than 11 million times and received 136,000 likes and 43,000 retweets. Now Speker, the home’s activities

co-ordinator, has helped to create the charity calendar using his photos and has pledged 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Alzheimer’s Society. He said: “I just wanted to try something a little different and I also thought this would be a good way of spending some quality oneto-one time with residents. “Every one of them was more than happy to be involved. Come From Away: The Concert While theatres have been asked to close their doors once more, plans are afoot for Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s musical to return in February as Come From Away: The Concert. The specially adapted concert version of the West End hit at the Phoenix Theatre features reduced audience capacity to allow for safe social distancing. Come From Away tells the inspiring true story of how the residents of Gander, Newfoundland, welcomed 7,000 stranded passengers from around the world after they were grounded following the terror attacks of 11 September 2001.

Among them was Rabbi Levi Sudak of Edgware as well as a Holocaust survivor. Producers of Come From Away, John Brant and Joseph Smith, said: “Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but as uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.” During its London run, the show won four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, as well as scooped multiple accolades across the globe. Get married… don’t get married; thousands of couples have had to alter their altar – or bimah – plans this year in line with the ever-shifting rules. Kari Colmans interviews resolute newlyweds who tied the knot against the odds in true Covid style lacey ASOS number, and it was all “very low-key, very chilled”. The flower arrangements were home-made, they had finger food and a buffet and music from an iPad. “We didn’t want to detract from what will eventually be our big day,” says Richard. “We didn’t want that to get watered down.” Despite the numerous Covid restrictions, the wedding ceremony was just the tonic their friends and family needed. “It provided such relief for everyone. The guests were so grateful to be able to just come and let their hair down and feel normal for one day.” Part Two is set for 2 April 2022, and they’re hoping to be third time lucky on the date change. The party will take place at The Ned in London. Claudia will get to wear her Pronovias dress, while Sensation band pumps out the tunes. “We still want our wedding,” they agree. “We don’t want to compromise,” adds Claudia. “We’ve done the Jewish bit, so all being well, there’s just the ‘big fat wedding’ part left for 2022. We’re having a celebrant conduct a humanist ceremony with Jewish traditions thrown in, such as Richard smashing the glass. “This will allow those family and friends who weren’t able to be there in September to see us say our vows.” Currently wading through the second lockdown, they both seem cheerful and still very much in love. Claudia reassures me that Richard “keeps himself to himself” in his home office working as a sales manager, while she occupies the kitchen space, home to her blossoming Greenfox bakery business, which she started in January, before the banana bread bandwagon gained momentum. verybody needs good neighbours, as the well-known song goes. But despite living just doors apart for most their lives, Claudia and Richard, both 32, didn’t meet until they were 16 at a friend’s New Year’s Eve party. She was dating someone else at the time, and they’d go for clandestine, lockdownstyle walks. It wasn’t long before they became a couple, staying together through their teenage years and university. They amicably split at 21 to see the world – she went travelling, while he studied abroad – and it was a further eight years before they got back together romantically. Claudia had recently returned from her time abroad when they both decided to go to the same tapas bar one evening. Richard volunteers his first of many calamitous anecdotes – they don’t stop laughing throughout our Zoom interview – as he remembers the night, and Claudia questions if he “really” wants to share this story. “I was sitting having something to eat and suddenly I realised my napkin had caught fire,” he says. “I ran into the street holding this blazing napkin, waving it into the air trying to put it out, just as Claudia’s three friends walked into the bar. It was a unique re-introduction to the social circle.” But Richard’s napkin wasn’t the only flame to reignite that evening, and the couple soon got back in touch, albeit just as friends at first. A few years passed by and it wasn’t until three years ago that the couple got back together. Cue Richard with another calamitous story regarding the big proposal, while Claudia sighs and smiles at the memory with an eye roll. “I took Claudia to Iceland to propose,” says Richard. “The trip was a birthday present. We rented

a car, drove from landmark to landmark, as you do. I planned to pop the question in front of the famous Gullfoss Falls waterfall, but there were too many tourists.” It was the right move. “I hate being the centre of attention!” Claudia cringes. Next stop was one of the famous national parks. Richard veered the car away from the path to find a secluded setting and Claudia “majorly freaked out”, prompting her to scream: “What are you doing?!” In the panic, Richard managed to wedge the car’s wheels under a heap of snow and sludge, leaving them stranded offroad, all the while with an engagement ring burning a hole in his pocket. They laugh about it now. “We are eternally grateful to the Icelandic couple who stumbled upon our car and rescued us!”

In the end, after a long day, Richard pulled up in front of a less than alluring hydroelectric power station. “It doesn’t sound romantic,” he concedes, “but the ground was super stable. And she said yes.” Fast forward to 2020 and it seems making the best of a bad situation has become the couple’s forte. While many have chosen to become legally married by English law, saving the Big Fat Jewish Wedding bit for after the apocalypse, Claudia and Richard have done the opposite. “We got married on 6 September,” says Claudia. “It was the same date as my dad’s wedding six years ago. Although at the time you weren’t supposed to get married in a home, we found a Jewish loophole because we can get married anywhere. We also managed to hit the 30-person sweet spot before they changed the rules again.” Rabbi Goldstein from Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue performed the ceremony, while the rest was “all very DIY”. e know Jews have won a disproportionate number of Nobel Prizes: more than 20 percent of them from a group that represents 0.2 percent of the world population, an overrepresentation of 100 to one. But the most striking disproportion is in the field of economics. The first Nobel Prize in economics was awarded in 1969. By 2017, of the 79 laureates, 29 were Jews – more than 36 percent. It all began with Joseph who, in this parasha, became the world’s first economist. Interpreting Pharaoh’s dreams, he develops a theory of trade cycles – seven fat years followed by seven lean years – and immediately proceeds to a solution: Use the good years to build up resources for the lean times, a sound instance of long-term economic planning (see Gen. 41:34–36).This turned out

to be life-saving advice. His later economic policies (see 47:11–26), are more questionable. When the people ran out of money during the lean years, Joseph told them to trade their livestock, then their land to Pharaoh. The Egyptians were now, in essence, Pharaoh’s serfs. These tactics would eventually be used against Joseph’s own people. So a reasonable case could be made that Joseph was the first economist. But why the predominance of Jews in econom-ics today? I do not want to argue that Jews created capitalism. They didn’t. But clearly there is a strong affinity between the market economy and what is known as the Judaeo-Christian ethic, because it was in western cultures that the former first emerged. What was it about biblical values that proved so fruitful for economic thought, institutions and growth? The Harvard historian and economist David Landes offered insight in his magisterial work, The Wealth and Poverty of Nations. He comments on the biblical insistence on property rights, respect for the dignity of labour, and the Judaic sense of linear time: time not as a series of cycles but rather as an arena of change, development, and progress. We are so familiar with these ideas – they form the bedrock of western culture – that we are not

always aware they are not human universals. To my mind, the most decisive single factor was the deconsecration of nature. God created nature by an act of will, and by making us in His image, gave us, too, the creative power of will. That meant that for Jews, holiness lies not in the way the world is but in the way it ought to be. Poverty, disease, famine, injustice, and the exploitation of the powerless by the powerful are not the will of God. God wants us not to accept but to heal, to cure, to prevent. So Jews have tended to become, out of all proportion to their numbers, lawyers fighting injustice, doctors fighting disease, teachers fighting ignorance and economists fighting poverty.All of this is brilliantly portrayed in this parasha. First Joseph diagnoses the problem. But what he does next is worldchanging. He sees the coming famine not as a fate to be endured but as a problem to be solved. Then, without fuss, he solves it, saving a whole region from death by starvation. What can be changed need not be endured. Human suffering is not a fate to be borne, but a challenge to be overcome. This is Joseph’s life-changing idea. What can be healed is not holy. God does not want us to accept poverty and pain, but to cure them.

The Bible Says What? ‘Aaron was given special garments to wear, but not Moses’ BY RABBI ANNA POSNER “Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest.” (Exodus 28:3) In Exodus, we read 40 verses of intricate detail about the clothes that Aaron and his sons must wear to serve as priests. And these clothes are not just for show. We find out that Aaron’s headdress will allow him to take away any sin from the Israelite people and that the breastplate over his heart holds the ‘mishpat bnei yisrael’ – the instrument Rashi says decides for the Israelites what to do or what not to do. The priests’ dress purposefully set them apart from the community. It was their job to give sacrifices and be the connection between the people and God. But what of Moses – the community builder and teacher of Torah, who is there for all the Israelites’

celebrations and anxieties? What did he wear? Just like the rest of the Israelite people, we do not know and, therefore it can be assumed that what he wore was no different to anyone else. If Moses were to have worn the garish clothing of the priests, he may not have been able to have had the on-the-ground impact with the Israelites he needed to. In an age without the Temple, it is not priests but rabbis, cantors and lay leaders who become the leaders of the community. Yet, like Moses, they do not wear the clothes of the priest detailed in these chapters of Exodus. Instead, with the absence of the Temple and sacrifice, our Torah becomes the central connection to God and ritual practice. Therefore, it is the Torah that wears the clothes of the priest.

Progressively Speaking Roald Dahl was racist, but can we still enjoy his books? STUDENT RABBI LEV TAYLOR This Chanukah, I bought my baby eight books – one for each night. Choosing children’s books is surprisingly hard. They don’t just have to have good illustrations and compelling storylines. For progressive parents, they also have to communicate good values in a way that isn’t toe-curlingly earnest. On top of all that, we now need to worry about whether their authors were antisemites. Roald Dahl certainly was. He said of Jewish people that “even a stinker like Hitler didn’t pick on them for no reason”. Last week, Dahl’s family apologised for his offensive remarks. So, what do we do with that? Can we still enjoy texts even if they’re written by racists? Let’s set aside the content, because I haven’t yet heard anyone argue that James and the Giant Peach is full of anti-Jewish tropes. Can we separate the art from the artist? Jewish tradition might suggest the answer is no. The values of a writer can matter so much that

they affect even our holiest texts. According to the Babylonian Talmud, Gittin 45b, even a Torah scroll – if written by a heretic – should be burned. Those standards, however, would render many of our own synagogues’ scrolls unfit for use. It is highly unlikely that every scribe holds perfectly to the Orthodoxy of the rabbis in the Talmud. A heretic, according to the Talmud, is someone who denies God’s perfection, the forthcoming resurrection of the dead or who

disagrees with the majority of rabbis on halachah (Jewish law). By such a measure, many of our congregants and rabbis would be considered heretics. Their books would be burned with them. So, do we burn all our Torah scrolls? Of course not. We teach the stories to children. Then, as adults, we study them, reflect on them and critically engage with them. This is what we need to do with Roald Dahl’s works, too. We can tell the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to our children. As adults, we can think about what the story’s values are. Roald Dahl was a racist. Cancelling him now, 30 years after his death, won’t change that. The harder task is looking at the prejudices and stereotypes in our society today. The real work is to educate our children in a way that helps facilitate an antiracist future – and for that, we need to start telling different stories. ◆ Lev Taylor is a student rabbi at Leo Baeck College

are simply unaware of how powerful mediation can be. Here is a typical example. A property developer is dissatisfied with his builder, and is claiming £200,000 compensation. The builder, though acknowledging some mistakes, is willing to offer just £10,000. Often, in situations like this, both sides – although possibly encouraged by lawyers – are being unrealistic and, were the case to go to court, the building company would end up paying much less than the full claim. With a skilled mediator, a similar outcome is often achieved in just a few hours, saving lots of money in legal costs and months of heartache. The second reason people

avoid mediation is that they don’t want to compromise – why should they, if they are right?! Nevertheless, the mindset is flawed. Without compromise, thinking solely about one’s commercial interests, mediation is very often a good idea. To see this, one must make a risk assessment as to how successful litigation is likely to be and take into account associated costs. Then – crucially – one must recognise the value of one’s own time and of being free of the emotional drain of conflict. Then, one will often conclude agreeing on a settlement that one would at first have thought outrageous, is actually a wise decision and shouldn’t really be termed a compromise at all.

ISRAELI AMBULANCE DEDICATIONS IN... HERTFORDSHIRE The Sukkot holidays are a time when, traditionally, hundreds of thousands of pounds of lifesaving vehicles are dedicated by Magen David Adom UK donors in Israel. This year, due to the restrictions imposed as a result of Coronavirus, it was not possible to dedicate in Israel, so instead, Israel came to the UK and the dedications took place in St Albans, Hertfordshire. In the grounds of Sopwell House, Magen David Adom UK’s generous supporters had the rare opportunity to dedicate an ambulance, all within a half an hour drive from their homes and in a fully Covid-19 compliant environment. Families Green, Paul, Spector, Sinclair and Reiss, together with Richard Spector of the ‘Challenge 50’ group, all took the time to tour the vehicle to gain a better understanding as to how their contributions are saving lives. It was the first time that Magen David Adom ambulance dedications had taken place in England since the 1960s and provided memories that no-one present will ever forget.
