Teenage suspect released without charge after nine Nazi symbols daubed near Belsize Square synagogue Police are still hunting for the vandals responsible for last weekend’s spate of antisemitic graffiti daubings near Belsize Square Synagogue, after the teenager arrested shortly after the crime took place was released without charge, writes Lee Harpin.

Officers initially announced they had seized a suspect shortly after at least nine swastikas were sprayed at locations close to the synagogue on Saturday evening. But at a briefing on Monday, it is understood officers told communal representatives the 17-year-old suspect had now been released without charge after being ruled out of the investigation.

Police have since launched a new investigation in an attempt to catch those responsible.

Communal figures told Jewish News they were reassured at how seriously police appeared to be taking the new probe into the incidents.

It has emerged that at least nine swastikas were found painted on walls in Belsize Avenue and Glenilla Road.

Shameful: Sick graffiti in Belsize Square

Police said they were alerted to reports of a man spraying swastikas at around 7.40pm on Saturday. Officers attended and began a search for the suspect.

Initial reports suggested the hate symbols were painted on Belsize Square Synagogue, however it was later established that the building itself was not vandalised.

Councillor Abdul Hai and Phil Rosenberg, co-chairs of the Camden Faith Leaders’ Forum, said: “We were made aware of swastikas graffitied around Belsize Park. We immediately started working with the local Jewish community and Camden Cabinet members who saw to a quick response, which led to an arrest and rapid cleanup operation. We pay tribute to all involved. As faith communities, we stand together against all bigotry in our borough.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the graffiti, tweeting: “Sick to hear about this. Antisemitism has no place in our city.”

The Board of Deputies said: “We’ve worked with local Jewish communities to coordinate actions by police and Camden in response to this graffiti. We welcome swift action by all concerned, including the clean-up.”

Georgia Gould, leader of Camden Council, also paid tribute to the police and the Community Security Trust for their responses.

She said: “We are disgusted by this act. Camden will always stand united against antisemitism.”

Boris Johnson was urged to take a tougher stance on Iran and its nuclear threat during his first in-person meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

The Iranian issue was high on the agenda as Johnson and Bennett enjoyed “warm and friendly” talks at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow on Tuesday.

The two leaders also discussed efforts to tackle the Covid pandemic, a forthcoming trade agreement and more co-operation, particularly in the field of innovation.

Johnson welcomed Israel’s progress on climate ahead of COP, including its recent commitment to net-zero and revised nationally determined contribution. He hoped to see further regional cooperation on expanding access to clean and renewable energy, to support decarbonisation and help to foster peace and stability.

Israel already maintains an array of radar systems to detect incoming threats, but the new airship is meant to complement and improve existing capabilities by placing the sensors at high altitude.

The Conservative Party has suspended a candidate selected to fight a council seat in Redbridge after it emerged that he ran a Facebook group which held on poll asking: “Is Zionism racism?”

Khalid Sharif has been confirmed as Redbridge Tories’ candidate in the Clayhall ward for May’s election after joined the party last year from Labour where he had previously described Jeremy Corbyn as a “breath of fresh air”.

Jewish News had reported on Sharif's creation of a poll on the IG–Soc: Connecting Muslims in Redbridge Insha’Allah Facebook group, which had posed the question about Zionism.

Comments were posted beneath the poll, launched in July, including the claim: “Just asking the question will be considered antisemitic.

“The Zionists have great powers hence they’ve made sure no one can say anything against them.”

On Tuesday a Conservative Party spokesperson told Jewish News: “Khalid Sharif has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation.”

Sharif had also said that last year he quit Labour to join the Tories over concerns that issues such relationships and sex education (RSE) and the Prevent programme were being ignored by Sir Keir Starmer’s party.

He told the Ilford Recorder that the Conservatives’ “key

difference” from Labour was that he was “allowed to have a differing view”.

The former Momentum member added he felt Corbyn had been “a breath of fresh air” for Labour but “that era has gone” and “you are going to see more and more Muslims move away from the Labour Party”.

He added that the Tory Party “had to work harder” to engage with Muslims, but the first step was “people like myself joining the party”.

British Jews have been an inspiration to Israel

This week, I made my first official visit to the UK as prime minister of Israel to join fellow world leaders at the COP26 UN Climate Summit in Glasgow. I came to lay out Israel’s commitments to tackle climate change, achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and to share my vision of turning Israel into an international centre for climate innovation.

I came into office when we were heading towards our fifth election in two years. Amid a global health pandemic, we were also plagued by an epidemic of political polarisation, paralysis and turmoil. We were a country needing to come together. For the sake of Israel’s future, we formed a historic new government of eight parties from the right and left, religious and secular, Jews and Muslims, all united by the common purpose of service to the Israeli people. Our new government brings with it a fresh start and a new spirit – of goodwill, decency and hope.

ings I held this week with my counterparts from around the world. Be it with prime minister Boris Johnson, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince of Bahrain (the first such meeting with an Israeli prime minister), or Bill Gates, we spoke about how Israel could share its extraordinary capacity for innovation and ingenuity for the greater good of humanity. Our message of taking action and sparking positive change in our communities, societies and around the world runs deep in our collective DNA as Jews in Israel,

Britain and the global Jewish family.

In Israel, we are inspired by how the difficulties faced by Jews in Britain have drawn together the community and united those who don’t necessarily see eye to eye on every matter. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve seen how the values of British Jewry – exceptional chesed, generosity and shared responsibility – have kept the community together during months of lockdown.

We’ve seen how British Jews have gone to enormous lengths to reach out to other communities.

This is why it was so important for me to meet with Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and share this message with him, as we reflected on our shared belief that we are all responsible for each other.

“Anachnu Yehudim – we are Jews,” I said. “There’s no Orthodox Jew, Conservative Jew, Reform Jew; we’re all Jews.” Whether in the diaspora or in Israel, if a Jew anywhere in the world hurts, I hurt. We can all sit around one table, as we are one people. By meeting at COP26, we brought this message of shared responsibility to the world.

Last week, Jews in Britain and around the world marked Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks’ first yahrzeit. He had written: “We know much more than we once did about the dangers to the earth’s ecology of the pursuit of economic gain. The guidance of the [Torah’s] Oral tradition in interpreting ‘do not destroy’ (bal tashchit) expansively, not restrictively, should inspire us now. We should expand our horizons of environmental responsibility for the sake of generations not yet born, and for the sake of God whose guests on earth we are.”

Now more than ever, we must heed these words and work together to expand our horizons and contribute to the greater good of the world.

UK ‘regrets’ Israeli’s exclusion from talks

The government has apologised to an Israeli energy minister after she was unable to attend the COP26 summit owing to a lack of wheelchair access.

Environment secretary George Eustice said there was “deep regret”’ about the incident, but claimed it happened as “obviously something went wrong” with communication from Israel’s side.

Karine Elharrar, a member of Israel’s delegation to the United Nations summit, missed talks on Monday because of the lack of suitable transport, and instead returned to her hotel in Edinburgh.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Eustice said: “We deeply regret that incident.

What would normally happen in this situation is that Israel would have communicated they had that particular need for their minister.

The UK’s ambassador to Israel, Neil Wigan, tweeted: “I am disturbed to hear that @KElharrar was unable to attend meetings at #COP2. I apologise deeply and sincerely to the minister. We want a COP summit that is welcoming and inclusive.”

Wigan also spoke to Tzipi Hotovely, Israel’s ambassador to the UK, apologising for the incident and stressed that measures would be taken to ensure the situation was not repeated.

Israel’s foreign affairs minister Yair Lapid tweeted: “Note to the organisers of the climate conference in Glasgow: It is impossible to worry about the future, the climate, and sustainability if we do not take care of people, accessibility and people with disabilities first.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury has apologised for suggesting that failure to act at COP26 could be graver than leaders who ignored warnings about the Nazis in the 1930s, writes Lee Harpin.

Justin Welby addressed his earlier comments made during a BBC interview in a tweet in which he apologised for the offence his words may have caused to Jewish people.

The Church of England’s most senior leader said: “I unequivocally apologise for the words I used when trying to emphasise the gravity of the situation facing us at COP26.

“It’s never right to make comparisons with the atrocities brought by the Nazis and I’m sorry for the offence caused to Jews by these words.”

Welby had told the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg at the Glasgow summit on Monday that world leaders “will be cursed if they don’t get this right”.

He added that “people will speak of them in far stronger terms than we speak today of

He said faith leaders had been left to “scramble” for opportunities to be heard, despite having influence over millions of people in the battle to save to the planet.

Mirvis said: “I personally lament the fact that, with regard to COP26, the United Nations has not chosen faith to be one of the key streams. Within the programme, there isn’t a day devoted to faith and its input. Faith leaders coming here have needed to scramble for attention, for opportunities to participate.”

He was speaking on Monday at a panel in Glasgow alongside the Bishop of Reading, the Right Rev Olivia Graham and Imam Sayed Ali Abbas Razawi, Chief Imam of the Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society.

Neo-Nazi is likened to Goebbels in court The alleged co-founder of a neo-Nazi terror group dedicated to starting a race war in Britain has been likened to the Third Reich’s propaganda chief, Joseph Goebbels.

Ben Raymond, 32, is accused of setting up the “unapologetically racist” National Action group to wage a “white jihad” and race war in Britain.

Bristol Crown Court heard the group was established in 2013 and was banned under terror legislation in 2016, becoming the first far-right group proscribed since the British Union of Fascists in 1940.

Barnaby Jameson QC, prosecuting, said: “Terrorists have many faces. Some are obvious. Some are not. Some are harmless-looking, educated and articulate.

“Some you could pass in the street without ever suspecting they were the founder of an organisation so extreme it was banned under terrorism legislation.

“Some you would never suspect they were steeped in extremist and fanatical ideology. Some you would never suspect they were preoccupied with thoughts of extreme terrorist violence. Some of you would never suspect Ben Raymond.

The court heard National Action was equipped with more than just “knives and attitude” and had access to rifles, a pump action shotgun, a machete, a crossbow and CS gas.

Jameson alleged that after it was outlawed in December 2016, it morphed into a new group called NS131 – National Socialist Anti-Capitalist Action – with which Raymond was involved.

Jameson explained to the jury of seven men and five women the ideology of National Action was rooted in Hitler and based upon the Sturmabteilung, a Nazi paramilitary group active in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s, and that it was against Jews, Muslims, people of colour, Asians, gays and liberals.

Raymond, of Beechcroft Road, Swindon, Wiltshire, is accused of seven offences – one of membership of a proscribed organisation contrary to Section 11 of the Terrorism Act and six of possessing a document or record of use to a terrorist contrary to Section 58 of the Act. The trial continues.

Rabbi’s climate warning A senior dayan has warned about the dangers of climate change, saying the community must be “more responsible in our use of energy, resources and disposal of waste”.

Google execs’ petition Two Jewish Google employees are leading a petition calling on the company and Amazon to cancel a joint contract to build cloud-based data centres for the Israeli government.

The massive contract, worth almost £1billion, was signed in May and is one of Israel’s largest technology infrastructure ventures. Google and Amazon will transfer Israel’s data into six cloud-based storage centres over the next few years.

The open letter says the deal violates the signers’ “core values” by allegedly fostering surveillance of Palestinians and encouraging the expansion of Jewish settlements.

“As a Jewish employee of Google, I feel a deep sense of intense moral responsibility,” said Ariel Koren, who works in Google’s education division. Koren, along with Google software engineer Gabriel Schubiner, helped devise the open letter calling for the two mammoth companies to end the Project Nimbus contract.

UK urged to press Israel on ‘terrorist group’ ban

Scottish National Party MP Tommy Sheppard has tabled an early day motion (EDM) in the House of Commons calling on the government to ask Israel to reveal the evidence behind a decision to designate six Palestinian groups as terrorist organisations.

The EDM, which is backed

by Labour MP Apsana Begum, described the declaration made

by Israeli defence minister Benny Gantz on 22 October as a “further direct assault on Palestinian civil society in an effort to isolate and suffocate Palestinian human rights defenders”.

Gantz had last month declared the six Palestinian human rights groups to be “terror organisations” that had effectively operated as an arm for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) group.

The six organisations included the Palestinian rights group Al-Haq, Addameer, which represents Palestinian security prisoners in Israeli military courts, and Defence for Children-International, a group that advocates for Palestinian children.

The Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees, the Bisan Research and Advocacy Center and the Union Of Agricultural Work Committees were also declared to be terrorist organisations.

According to the Defence Ministry, all six employed senior PFLP members, “including activists involved in terror activity.”

Israel, the United States and the European Union consider the PFLP, one of several member parties of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, to be a terror group.

But Sheppard’s EDM described the six organisations as “deeply committed to protecting the human rights of Palestinian communities, highlighting Israel’s

illegal policies and also those of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas”.

It also noted that 22 Israeli civil society groups had issued statements in support of the six.

also called on the government to reaffirm its support for both Palestinian and Israeli civil society “as a key foundation in building a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians”.

Arrest in yeshiva graffiti inquiry A suspect who sprayed “f*** Jews” on the pavement outside a yeshiva headquarters in Gateshead was arrested after being apprehended by two guards on duty at the building.

After catching the suspect, who had used yellow paint, the guards called the local Community Security Trust (CST) control room and Northumbria Police to report the incident.

Jewish News understands that police have been made aware of the two previous antisemitic graffiti incidents that took place within 100 yards of each other, to see if there is a connection to the weekend incident.

Around-the-clock safeguarding of such buildings are paid for out of the government grant for protecting Jewish communal locations. The grant is administered by the CST. A CST spokesperson said: “This disgusting antisemitic graffiti was one of a series targeting the community in Gateshead and we are grateful to the guards for their swift action in apprehending a suspect and calling the police.” Enquiries remain ongoing.

‘BOYCOTT BIG ISSUE’ CALL OVER RILEY INTERVIEW Hard-left activists have been labelled “a complete disgrace” after calling for a boycott of a magazine sold to help the homeless after its latest edition featured an interview with the Countdown presenter Rachel Riley, writes Lee Harpin.

Maths expert Riley spoke with The Big Issue and had praised Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s attempts to tackle antisemitism in his party.

She said he was in a “very difficult position” because he has “such a tough job to try and bring his party back to what it was”.

She also said Starmer and his team “know they’re not electable” without ridding the party of the scourge of anti-Jewish racism.

Since the article was published, the Countdown host has faced vicious attacks on social media – including widespread slurs that she is a “disgusting evil woman”, a “Zionist shill”, a “right-wing hag” and also that “the homeless are suffering because of Rachel Riley”.

But now, in protest against the decision to include the interview that discussed Labour antisemitism, several activists who support former leader Jeremy Corbyn, have used social media to call for The Big Issue to be boycotted.

Simon Maggin, an outspoken Corbyn supporter, confirmed that he has written to John Bird, founder of The Big Issue, to protest against the interview with Riley.

He later tweeted: “Very disappointed that @BigIssue would publish that Rachel Riley piece. I’ll be boycotting you now until you offer a right of reply.”

A British kosher food brand has won a national award for its chicken soup with matzah balls.

Delivery service 1070 Kitchen was handed a Great Taste Award 2021 for its ‘Jewish Penicillin’ after judges praised its “homemade appearance, with a rich, deep aroma”.

They said its “flavour echoes the aroma, delivering on the promised intensity of flavour”.

Chicken soup has long been a mainstay of Jewish cuisine, with the philosopher Moses Maimonides recommending it as treatment for the sick and weak. Among Sephardim, the custom prevailed to give ‘caldo de gayina vieja’ – old hen chicken broth – to women who had given birth.

After the 15th century, chicken soup slowly became a traditional dish in Jewish Ashkenazic culture.

Jewish emigrants also popularised it in America in the post-war period, leading to its ‘Jewish Penicillin’ nickname.

‘Palestine convoy’ hearing adjourned

Four men charged with yelling antisemitic abuse from a car in a ‘Convoy for Palestine’ have had their case adjourned until 23 November. Mohammed Iftikhar Hanif, 27, Jawaad Hussain, 24, Asif Ali, 25 and Adil Mota, 26, all from Blackburn, Lancs, are said to have been part of a convoy travelling through St John’s Wood this year. They had been due to appear for a pretrial hearing at Wood Green Crown Court this week.

Tributes to ‘thrash metal’ journalist

Music journalist Malcolm Dome, credited with coining the term ‘thrash metal’, has died, aged 66. Dome rose to prominence in the 1980s after the publication of his book Encyclopedia Metallica, and became a respected journalist in the world of heavy metal, writing for Record Mirror, Kerrang and Metal Hammer. Artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Lars Ulrich and metal band Iron Maiden paid tribute.

Royal honour for Red Cross lawyer

A Jewish humanitarian has been honoured for nearly four decades of service to the Red Cross.

Michael Meyer was presented with the Queen’s Badge of Honour by Princess Alexandra, vice-president of the British Red Cross, during a ceremony at St James’ Palace last week.

The Islington resident was recognised for his 39 years with the organisation, in which time he has contributed to many “significant achievements”, including the UK’s ratification of the 1977 Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions, and support for International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

The charity sad his “extraordinary expertise” in international law and the Red Cross has been “instrumental in guiding and shaping” its approach.

After receiving the badge, the British Red Cross’s highest honour for exceptional service, Meyer said: “I have now worked as a staff member of the British Red Cross for 39 years and was a volunteer before that.

“From a young age, growing up in California, I have been motivated by public service. I have always seen my Red Cross/Red Crescent work as a form of public service, and as a vocation. To have my service recognised by the British Red Cross in this way is highly appreciated and satisfying.

“I have long admired the dedicated service of Her Maj-

esty the Queen. To receive an award with her approval and name is also especially meaningful and valued.”

David Bernstein, chair of the British Red Cross board of trustees, said: “We are so proud of the service that Michael has given to the organisation. We would like to thank him for his years of dedicated service.”

The award is seen by the charity as rare, with only 30 people allowed to hold it at any time.

95% of Arabic hate ignored on Facebook

Facebook deletes only a tiny fraction of Arabic hate speech posted on its platforms because its systems are heavily skewed towards monitoring English language content, campaigners have warned.

Jonathan Greenblatt of the US-based Anti-Defamation League said the social media giant’s AI or artificial intelligence filter – which is designed to automatically remove content that is offensive or illegal – was deeply deficient in most regions where English is not the main language.

“It’s quite astonishing to consider that something like 87 percent of their AI is focused on English-language hate content,” Greenblatt said, “despite the fact that English language

Ilford, both of which are “very close to the Goldstein family’s hearts”, according to organisers.

Throughout the 1930s, Kurt Goldschlager swam so well he was on the Austrian national team. By the mid-1940s, he was cycling – and not for Austria, but for the British Army, under enemy fire. He had swapped the lanes of the pool for the tracks of Nazi territory, the sound of cheering and applause for the sound of gunshots and explosions.

In the UK, Goldschlager – like many other European Jews fighting for the Allies in central Europe – had changed his name to something English-sounding. So, as he dodged the bullets and pedalled along to pass vital messages, he did so as 13801160 Private Kenneth Edward Clarke.

When he died in 1977, shortly after being violently mugged in Manchester, he was without family and was buried a pauper in the Roman Catholic section of Manchester’s vast Southern Cemetery. His wartime bravery, perhaps spurred on by his mother’s murder at the hands of the Nazis, which had led to him being mentioned in despatches, was by then long forgotten.

Goldschlager’s later life and death were likely to have passed unnoticed had his niece in San Diego not got in touch with Jewish military researchers in the UK to alert them. It quickly became apparent that no one had known Goldschlager was Jewish when he died.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) was alerted, funding was sought and found, and a new headstone was made, one adorned with a Star of David, recording how Goldschlager was a commando who fought in No 3 Troop (Jewish Troop) during the Second World War, and had been laid to rest 44 years previously with a Catholic burial.

This month, in what promises to be a very moving ceremony, Goldschlager’s stone will be reconsecrated in Manchester at an event attended by members of the city’s Jewish community and organised by the chairman of the Manchester branch of AJEX, Joe Flacks.

Born in Vienna in 1912, Goldschlager was one of four brothers, one of whom later lived in Chicago under the surname Gordon. Their father, Julius, was an architect who died of natural causes in 1940. His mother, Irene, was deported to Auschwitz, where she was murdered in 1942.

Years before, in his twenties, the sporty Goldschlager had been on the Austrian national swimming and water polo teams, but was forced to flee for the UK in June 1939.

He worked for a Jewish charity in London before joining the British Army’s Pioneer Corp, in which he served from 1940 to 1943.

He later volunteered twice into No 10 International Commando, where he was an interpreter and interrogator on the front line in the final four months of the war, the Army using his wide language skills.

Goldschlager’s bravery was recorded after fighting near Osnabruck, in north-west Germany, where he had “cycled under heavy fire and in full view of the enemy” to get a medical team to an ambushed and wounded commando unit.

“It saved many lives,” says British Jewish military researcher Martin Sugarman, who worked with the CWGC to bring about the correction.

“He arranged for artillery covering fire for the troop while they escaped. He then entered Osnabruck ahead of his troop and persuaded a whole company of heavily-armed Hungarian Nazis to surrender, an act that was apparently captured on film and saved many more lives.”

After the war, Goldschlager returned to the UK and ran a ladies’ tailoring business in Harrow Road, London, but this was unsuccessful and he moved up to Manchester, never marrying. Until an American relative got in touch, no one had known that he was Jewish.

A US-based philanthropist, Jerry Klinger, of the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation, heard about the story.

nearby Jewish cemetery. “It explains who Kurt was and how his grave location, once unknown, can now be found,” said Sugarman.

“He is a Jewish war hero, whose burial place was all but lost. It is now remembered and Kaddish will be said for him each year by the Jewish community in Manchester.”

On seeing the stone for the first time, his niece Tracy Fish described the moment as “very moving”. She said: “I’m sat here tearing up.

I’m somewhat speechless.”

Fish added: “It never occurred to me that the stone would be so individually personalised and so beautiful. I was expecting a simple plaque with all the names of the men buried there who served in the No 10 commandos.

“All these men deserve recognition for their service.”

Autistic kids should learn Hebrew

Researchers have ‘dispelled language myth’

Jewish autistic children thrive as bilingual learners despite “outdated” advice not to teach Hebrew a study has found, writes Joshua Salisbury.

The University of Cambridge study found that non-Jewish specialists often advised against teaching Hebrew as a second language, despite evidence suggesting that children would benefit from learning it.

Researchers, led by Rabbi David Sher, found that while professionals tended to back parents in advocating learning Hebrew, medical practitioners often lacked cultural knowledge of the importance of the language and the latest scientific evidence.

“Although there is no evidence teaching autistic children a second language is harmful, there seems to be a prevailing, outdated view

that it will confuse them and impede their acquisition of English,” he said. “This overlooks the fact Jewish children use Hebrew extensively to participate in community and family life. For autistic children, those opportunities are hugely important.”

The researchers conducted detailed interviews and written surveys with 53 parents and educational practitioners, collectively representing 168 autistic children and 20 of the 90 Jewish primary schools in the UK – including four of the five Jewish special schools.

Teachers and parents told researchers that autistic pupils who acquired proficiency in English showed no difficulty grasping Hebrew as well – sometimes doing so with greater ease than their peers.

The finding corresponds to other studies

that indicate that despite the advice of some practitioners, bilingual autistic children do not generally experience language development delays, say researchers.

It recommends that more is done to ensure practitioners working with autistic children from diverse communities understand their families’ cultural and linguistic values.

Researcher Dr Jenny Gibson, associate professor of psychology and education at the university, said: “It is essential practitioners recognise the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity when considering how to support children from minority backgrounds. The idea that autistic children can only learn one language is a myth.”

The study is published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

The comedian and actor, who co-hosts The Great British Bake Off on Channel 4, said he had been offered citizenship through his grandmother, who fled Berlin in 1938.

Lucas, 47, has previously told how members of his family fled Germany prior to the Second World War amid persecution from the Nazis over their Jewish heritage. He told one follower on Twitter that the naturalisation process had taken six months.

Sharing a photo of a pin badge featuring both the British and German flags, he quipped that he had been given gummy bears by the German embassy.

He said: “My grandma fled Berlin in 1938. Having been offered

citizenship, I have just been to the German Embassy in London to collect my Certificate of Naturalisation.

“I am officially Anglo-German. They gave me some Gummibarchen and this lovely badge. Now to choose a German football team.” FC Union Berlin was the first team to contact Lucas, commenting “Willkommen” – “welcome” – and sharing a handshake emoji.

Lucas, an Arsenal fan, replied: “I have been claimed by Union Berlin, it seems. My new German team, then!” He and his Bake Off co-host Noel Fielding recently dressed up as German electronic pop band Kraftwerk for the introduction to a Germanthemed week on the show.

Communal groups have been working with education authorities to avoid exam clashes over Shavuot.

The Board of Deputies has written to Jewish secondary school leaders reassuring them measures are being put in place. It has been working with the Department for Education and Joint Council on Qualifications (JCQ) to make other arrangements.

A number of exams had been moved from 6 June, which is Shavuot, including GCSE citizenship studies, computer science and sociology and A-level chemistry and sociology.

The letter to school leaders says, however that “regrettably, it was apparently not possible to move A-level economics”. JCQ and the Department for Education have been asked for comment.

Facebook exec’s campaign raises £2.5m for research into rare cancer Almost 6,000 donors raised £2.5million to help fund life-saving research into a rare form of cancer, as part of a campaign by Facebook’s Nicola Mendelsohn who is battling the condition, writes Jack Mendel.

The 36-hour campaign to tackle follicular lymphoma (FL) was backed by high-profile figures, including social media influencer and ex-JFS student Julius Dein, who encouraged his 60 million followers to donate.

Funds were matched by philanthropists Andy and Jaime Peykoff, with more than 5,792 donors contributing, surpassing the initial £2m target. Jaime is an LF survivor and supports a US-based foundation researching the condition.

Among them was 25-year-old athlete Andrew McAslan, who was diagnosed with the condition, as well as Sally Hurman and her husband Gav, who also

has FL. Sally and Andrew both recruited more than 1,000 donors to the campaign, raising more than £100,000.

Mendelsohn, founder and chair of the Follicular Lymphoma Foundation, was recently promoted to vice president of Facebook Inc’s global business group.

She discovered a small lump in 2016, before a CT scan revealed she had more tumours around her body.

Speaking about the fundraiser, she said: “Our 36-hour campaign was exhilarating and emotionally charged. I am so incredibly grateful for the amazing global support we received from friends, family and FL patients alike.

“The campaign could never have happened without the remarkable generosity of Andy and Jaime Peykoff, who matched every penny.

Chomsky: Uni apology is big blow to academic freedom Some 500 scholars, including prominent linguist and Israel critic Noam Chomsky, have accused a Scottish university of curbing free speech after a student publication apologised for a 2017 essay it said promoted “an unfounded antisemitic theory”.

The essay, published in the University of Glasgow’s student-run eSharp

magazine, was titled Advocating Occupation: Outsourcing Zionist Propaganda in the UK.” Its author, Jane Jackman, wrote: “Whilst initially strengthening ties with the Jewish diaspora, Israel’s longer-term objective was to conscript... a cohort of grassroots Zionist supporters to carry the Israeli narrative into the broader sphere of society.”

She said Jewish media downplayed a 2017 Al Jazeera series, suggesting the pro-Israel lobby had unusual clout in the UK. In May, the magazine apologised, saying the essay does not meet “standards of scholarship. In particular, this article employs some discursive strategies, including a biased selection of

sources as well as the misrepresentation of data, which promote an unfounded antisemitic theory regarding the state of Israel and its activity in the UK”.

A petition on Monday said the university curbed free speech, The Times reported, quoting Chomsky as saying the apology was a “capitulation... and a serious blow to academic freedom”.

Rabbi jailed for fraud is questioned over murder A Charedi rabbi already imprisoned in Israel for fraud is facing fresh suspicion in connection to the disappearance and suspected murder of two men in the late 1980s.

Police want to speak to Rabbi Eliezer Berland, 83, who began a sentence last week for swindling terminally ill people out of money with the promise that they would be healed.

Israeli media reported that he was arrested on Monday morning and that his wife, Tehillah Berland, had also been detained by police for questioning in Jerusalem.

Edri, 41, may have been orchestrated by members of his sect, Shuvu Banim.

Shitrit was a Charedi youth who disappeared in 1986. His body was never found.

Edri was killed and his body was discovered beaten in Ramot Forest to the north of

Jerusalem in 1990. Ten other suspects have been held by police in connection to the two cases.

Shuvu Banim members are believed to have been involved in both cases, Ha’aretz reported, at a time when Berland was a heavily influential leader. Many members viewed him as a partly divine being.

Berland was given an 18-month prison sentence after it emerged that he had convinced families to pay thousands of shekels to him in exchange for blessings, promises to heal them and a guarantee they would live beyond 100 years.

The rabbi is not expected to serve the full sentence because of ill health. An earlier prison sentence, for sexual assault and indecent acts, was also cut short because he has cancer.

Organisers have released more details of the contest, the 70th annual event, which will

The UAE is taking part for the first time in the live televised contest, which will begin at 5pm UK time on Sunday, 12 December, while Morocco has not competed

A rally took place at a university in the United States this week after a fraternity on campus said a small Torah used in its initiation process (pictured) was damaged during a vandalism spree.

The president of Tau Kappa Epsilon, a fraternity on George Washington’s campus in Washington, DC, said the vandalism took place on Sunday, according to a report in the student newspaper. He said hot sauce was poured throughout

the house and objects thrown around, it reported.

The Torah scroll was kept in the basement and used to swear in new members to the fraternity, of whom about a quarter are Jewish.

Israel’s Uyghur pass Israel chose not to sign a United Nations statement expressing concern about the welfare of the Uyghurs, a Muslim minority group in China that has been forced into “re-education camps,” which some have likened to concentration camps.

While the US, UK, Germany and Australia were among the group of 43 countries that signed the statement

last week, an Israeli diplomatic official told The Times of Israel that his government had “other interests that it has to balance” in its relationship with China but said it expresses its concern through “diplomatic tracks”.

Lviv sewer hiding place discovered Ukrainian researchers have finally found the secret chamber within a subterranean sewer network in which dozens of Jews from the city of Lviv hid during the Nazi occupation of the Second World War, writes Adam Decker.

The team, which included archaeologists, was inspired to find the chamber after seeing a 2011 Polish film about the families who were hidden there by Ukrainians who brought them food and drink, including beer, as well as toys for the children.

Holocaust survivor Krystyna Chiger was 11 when she hid in the underground annexe to a rainwater depository below Lviv’s Cathedral Square.

She has recalled the awful conditions in which she and at least 20 other Jews lived for months, until their rescuers could move them on safely, but not until disease had killed about 50 Jews.

“It was very wet and dark,” she said in 1947.

“I was scared and shaking, but I tried to be calm and only asked daddy if we still had far to go.

“There were stones with yellow worms crawling all over. We put all our things over the stones and sat on top of them. It was awful there.

Water seeped from the walls and it smelled bad.

I saw large, red rats, which ran by us. At first, I was very afraid, but later I got used to it.”

The researchers from Lviv University said they found both the chamber that housed dozens of Jews taking refuge as well as “relics” from their time there after watching In Darkness, an award-winning Polish historical drama about their survival.

Hanna-Melania Tychka, one of the archaeologists, said the finding was “surreal”, while digger Andriy Ryshtun said there had been “almost no places where people can stay for a long time... Water is flowing everywhere”.

He told local media that “the entrance to the left and right was walled up with blocks, so the chamber remained isolated”, adding that it was a rare remnant from medieval times that had been walled off and forgotten for centuries. “It could accommodate many people and we found clear evidence that people were hiding there from the Nazis,” he said.

A torch and nails had been driven into the stones to make rudimentary hooks, broken glass had been used to stuff holes to prevent rats from entering, and tons of earth had been used to conceal the annexe from the Germans, who were digging trenches nearby.

According to organisers, Emanuel Nachshon, the Israeli ambassador to Belgium, “spoke about the dangers of politi-

cians ignoring Jewish interests and playing the Middle East card in order to get votes from the left and Muslim community”.

These mirror past arguments made by Alex Benjamin, now of the European Jewish Alliance, that Muslim refugees will skew politicians’ support away from Jews and Israel.

The conference was arranged by Israeli non-governmental organisation Nevatim with the European Janusz Korczak Academy, the Jewish Agency for Israel, and Genesis Philanthropy Group.

French would-be president ‘antisemitic’ The French chief rabbi has called a Jewish journalist mulling a presidential bid “antisemitic and racist” in a TV interview.

Eric Zemmour, who has referred to Muslim immigrants as “invaders” whose arrival will lead to “a great replacement”, is widely thought to be eyeing a bid for the Elysée Palace early next year.

With that in mind, Chief Rabbi Haim Korsia was asked about Zemmour during a recent interview on France 2, in which he pulled no punches. “Antisemite? Certainly. A racist? Definitely,” he said.

Zemmour is the son of Berber Jewish immigrants from Algeria. His wife and son are Jewish, and he attends synagogue.

Last month, polling put him at 15 percent nationally, although he is yet to declare his intention to run.

His past comments have been described as “disconcerting”, “obsessive” and “pathologically nationalistic” by the main French Jewish newspaper, Tribune Juive, which also criticised Korsia for his “nonsensical” labelling of Zemmour as antisemitic.

If he does run for president, Zemmour will have to contend with fellow rightwing politician Marine Le Pen, whose late father was convicted of antisemitism, but whose own comments regarding Jews and Israel have been largely supportive.

An historic synagogue used for centuries by Cochin Jews in Kerala is to be repaired by the Indian government after becoming structurally unsound. The famous Kadavumbhagam Synagogue in Mattancherry, built in 1549, is now exposed to the elements.

Its interior was shipped to Israel in the late 20th century.

An illustrated medieval Hebrew prayer book from Bavaria has sold for £6.5 million in New York. The elegant Luzzatto mahzor, dating from the late 13th century, became the most expensive Hebrew manuscript ever sold at auction.

Jewish leaders in Stockholm have asked Sweden’s National Agency for Education why it recommended that teachers make students argue the Holocaust was a hoax during a lesson on conspiracy theories.

Sweden’s Jewish Central Council called it “bizarre,” saying: “Even if it is well-intentioned, there is a danger.”

A Hungarian consulate has opened in Antwerp with an Orthodox Jewish diamond dealer inaugurated as its honorary consul.

Ari Epstein, the chief executive of the city’s World Diamond Centre whose grandparents were Hungarian, is charged with promoting bilateral relations between Hungary and Belgium.

Jewish philanthropists came together in Tel Aviv, New York and online last week for a twoday Israel Ideas Festival organ- Festival speaker Guri Alfi ised by the Jewish Funders Network.

Up to 350 delegates discussed Israel’s relationship with the Arab world and with international Jewry, looking in particular at the implications of the Abraham Accords, which normalised relations with several Gulf and Arab states.

From Tel Aviv, Israeli comedian Guri Alfi spoke about ‘Jewish peoplehood’, while other sessions focused on issues such as at-risk women, the elderly, workforce development and impact investing.

Poll of American Jews ‘of concern’

A survey of American Jews has shown that one-in-five have changed where they go or the way they display their Jewishness over the past year for fear of antisemitism.

In the poll, organised by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), 17 percent of Jews also said they were the target of an antisemitic remark in person over the past 12 months, while 12 percent said they had been targeted online.

These figures “should alarm Americans”, said AJC chief executive David Harris. “Now is the time for American society to stand up and say enough is enough.”

Of the non-Jews polled, 60 percent said antisemitism was a serious problem, com-

pared to 90 percent of Jews.

Three quarters of all respondents felt the far-right was a threat to Jews, while just over a third felt likewise about the far-left.

The poll captured a feeling of pessimism among American Jews, with almost nine in 10 saying antisemitism had increased in recent years.

The question of what constitutes anti-Jewish racism appeared as controversial as ever.

When asked if the statement “American Jews are loyal to Israel and disloyal to America” is antisemitic, 27 percent of the general population surveyed said it was not, as did 14 percent of the poll’s Jewish respondents.

Climate of anger is far off the mark Can we just step back, take a breath and think for a moment? As Jews. Given that the purpose of the COP26 summit is entirely about future generations being able to breathe, it seems appropriate to ask our community to do that now. To stop and consider how right Archbishop Justin Welby was when he told the current generation of political leaders that they will be “cursed” in history if they don’t try to save our planet. He claimed their failure to do so would be worse than ignoring Hitler. Welby thinks the only thing worse than the Nazis is the actual end of the world.

Why be offended by such a suggestion? Those now howling for Welby – an honest, decent man with an impeccable reputation – to be stripped of his title because of what he said are far off the mark.

The Nazis dedicated themselves to destroying the world as we know it and wiping out our future generations. Humanity’s destructive disregard for the very future of life on this planet bears fair comparison.

Israel is our true memorial Alex Brummer asserts that unless the proposed Holocaust memorial is constructed in Victoria Park Gardens, the Holocaust will be forgotten, once the last survivors have died (Jewish News, 30 October 2021). Seriously?

The memorial has been opposed by distinguished Jews, among others, because the eyesore structure of 22 fins (pictured) would destroy a small, much-loved space and the familiar view of Parliament, without reminding anyone of the Shoah. A vanity project.

As someone whose refugee parents lost dozens of family members in the Shoah, I consider the real memorial to be Israel, born out of the ashes of the Holocaust, in defiance of antisemites everywhere.

Mr Brummer, in contrast, seems to do Israel down.

So news this week that 1070 Kitchen has been handed a Great Taste award for its supermarket-stocked ‘Jewish Penicillin’ chicken soup will have sent Semitic stomachs rumbling across the land.

While the soup’s healing powers and medicinal qualities are long established, the 100-carrot golden question remains: Is 1070 Kitchen’s chicken soup really the best broth for bowel and bowl? The only way to decide is to pick some up from your local supermarket.

Just one word of warning. If you agree with the judges, whatever you do... don’t tell mum.

He also lambasted Israeli ambassador Tzipi Hotovely for her accurate description of the Naqba as “a made-up Arab lie”.

Does Mr Brummer forget that when David Ben Gurion announced the rebirth of the Jewish state, in accordance with the wishes of the international community, six Arab countries attacked? As the head of the Arab League said at the time: “The war will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre, which will be spoken of like the Mongol massacres and Crusades.”

The Naqba was their failure to do so.

We have had so many lies and broken promises from world leaders when it comes to the big changes that are needed to reduce carbon emissions. We know politicians lie, and we know they lie even when the world’s climate is in deep crisis.

So why don’t electorates in every country vote to put faith leaders – of whatever religion – in charge of decisions about emissions targets? That will be the best way to ensure that we will no longer be lied to and commitments will be honoured.

The future of the planet depends on it.

It was good to see Naftali Bennett elbowbump Boris Johnson at the start of #COP26 in Glasgow this week. It should be noted that Israel is playing its part in the crucial transition to renewable energy and net zero carbon emissions. Tree planting, with which Israel has long been synonymous, is the most cost-effective way to eliminate carbon.

Indeed, China, the planet’s worst culprit, has pledged to undertake a massive tree-planting project in the coming years.

There is much discussion currently in the news about ending life for people who have suffered debilitating illness. Yet we are constantly told to value our days. Our hospitals work wonders to relieve pain, but I know of family members who suffered so much that they were given drugs to lessen the pain at the end of their life. In our advanced medical world, we must leave such an important decision to those with knowledge of the person and not rely on a general edict.

Shimon Peres’ peculiar and pointless pillorying JENNI FRAZER

I

sraeli society, when it is not dividing itself into pro- and anti-Netanyahu camps (who? yes, you remember him – the graceless former prime minister who refused to attend a public ceremony marking the anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination) – was awash with chatter last week about the alleged actions of another former prime minister, Shimon Peres.

The occasion was a series of interviews given by former diplomat and Labour Knesset member Colette Avital, in which she told a Ha’aretz writer that, on two occasions, Mr Peres had behaved in an inappropriate manner towards her, after which she said she had chosen not to be alone in a room with him.

So what exactly did Ms Avital, now 81, say Mr Peres had done? She told Ha’aretz that while he was prime minister in 1984, he had tried to kiss her, but that she had pushed him away. On another occasion, she claimed,

he had met her in a hotel in Paris, dressed in his pyjamas, and attempted to push her towards the bed.

Again Ms Avital resisted, and after these two incidents, she said, Mr Peres did not repeat his approaches.

Shimon Peres died five years ago and several matters remain true. First, that Ms Avital continued to work closely with him for the rest of her public career; that she said nothing about the alleged attacks during his lifetime or, indeed, in the immediate aftermath of his death; that rumour certainly swirled throughout Israel for the entirety of her career that she had only gained political preferment because she was having an affair with Mr Peres; that his wife, Sonia, refused to live with her husband when he became president, but that she had been both privately and publicly friendly with Colette Avital before that; and, lastly, that when I interviewed him at the Peres Centre for Peace in Jaffa, about a year before his death, almost the entire support staff consisted of what I shall describe as “sweetie-birds” – a crowd of well-

HE – ALLEGEDLY – TRIED IT ON AND WAS REBUFFED. THEN THEY GOT ON WITH THEIR LIVES dressed, pretty women, some of whom looked very young.

What are we to make of Ms Avital’s claims?

It ought to be pointed out that since her Ha’aretz interviews, a second woman has offered an anonymous statement claiming Mr Peres pressed her up against a wall and slipped his hand up her shirt without her consent.

A friend in Israel, when I raised the matter and asked whom it would benefit, remonstrated and said that perhaps Ms Avital had wanted to set the record straight. And, indeed, several

other things are true: as Ms Avital herself has acknowledged, such inappropriate behaviour – if, indeed, it took place – has to be seen against the context of societal attitudes at the time.

This was long before #MeToo – and, presumably, Ms Avital’s admitted overriding admiration for Mr Peres as a politician made her want to continue working with him. We will never know, because Mr Peres is dead and not here to defend himself.

Israeli society in many respects is Neanderthal and, indeed, only last week, the MK Elazar Stern withdrew as a candidate to head the Jewish Agency because of claims he wilfully ignored sexual harassment complaints while leading the Israel Defense Forces’ Manpower Directorate.

In a country in which serious sexual harassment finally led to the toppling of a president (Moshe Katsav), Ms Avital’s post-mortem pillorying of Shimon Peres seems peculiar to say the least. Because in the end, nothing happened. He – allegedly – tried it on and was rebuffed. Then they got on with their lives.

I wonder if she thinks the fallout was worth it.

his week, politicians from around the world gathered in Glasgow for COP26 – a global conference to discuss nothing more or less than the future of our planet.

This is the forum at which global deals are reached, targets are set and a blueprint mapped out that we hope will stave off the climate disaster scientists have predicted should we continue to burn fossil fuels and emit CO2 at the current rate.

However, this conference is not just for politicians. Here at COP26 there is also a forum called the Green Zone, where youth groups, civil society, academia, artists, business from across the UK and all over the world have been hosting events, exhibitions, cultural performances, workshops and talks.

This is where I have been based at the stall the Board of Deputies is running with our partner organisation, EcoSynagogue. We are demonstrating our determination that the Jewish community must be fully committed to doing whatever we can to be part of the

solution to climate change rather than the problem.

To this end, we have teamed up with EcoSynagogue, which is a unique initiative spanning the whole Jewish community with rabbinic leadership from four denominations of Judaism. EcoSynagogue’s aim is to help ensure that, with careful attention to synagogue buildings and practices, we can launch the Jewish community towards a net zero carbon future.

EcoSynagague sets an example that we will all have to follow if we are to guide our planet towards calmer waters. Although the main work of the Board of Deputies is to represent the Jewish community on such issues as antisemitism, religious freedoms and education, we, as a community, cannot bury our heads in the sand over climate change.

This is the reason the Board of Deputies passed a motion earlier this year that declared a global climate crisis and pledged us to take action to cut carbon emissions and

play our part to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Of course it would be absurd not to acknowledge that the effect of our contribution is microscopic in combating this crisis compared with the governments of the world, but there is an important principle that transcends this. We all have a responsibility to do whatever we can.

Obviously, a global leader has more leverage than you or I, but our world will not prevail against climate change without the active participation of all of us.

That is why this week we have been in Glasgow engaging with interfaith partners and COP26 delegates. A small team of us has been running the Board of Deputies-EcoSynagogue stall, which has showcased the work of the Jewish community in this vital space.

The conclusion of the conference will not mean the end of our efforts. This weekend has been designated EcoShabbat. We are encouraging all UK Jewish communities to use this as

a way of engaging on this crucial topic.

Then, next Monday, we will host an interfaith panel discussion, bringing together many of the eco-initiatives across the faiths – EcoSynagogue, Eco Church, Eco-Congregations, EcoIslam, EcoSikh and Bhumi Global. This event will emphasise that we will all need to cooperate and work together if we are to prevail.

Climate change, as we have seen in the extreme weather events of the past few years, affects the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities disproportionately, destroying lives and taking away livelihoods. We have a religious and a humanitarian duty to act now while we still can.

One year after EHRC and we are heading in right direction MIKE KATZ

O

ne year ago on 29 October, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) published its long-awaited report on antisemitism in the Labour Party.

Twelve months on, the difference between the Labour of Jeremy Corbyn, which the equalities watchdog found had unlawfully discriminated against its Jewish members, and Keir Starmer’s party is like night and day.

The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM)’s decision to refer the party to the EHRC came in the summer of 2018. Having spent a fruitless period trying to persuade anyone in power who might listen that the problem of anti-Jewish racism was real, growing and required clear leadership, we’d come to the end of our tether.

It was clear our good faith – born of our 100 years of affiliation to Labour – wasn’t reciprocated. We realised we needed outside intervention. We spoke with our friend Clive Sheldon

QC, who explained the options and we identified that referring the party to the EHRC for a breach of the law was the best way to force Labour to change. He referred us to James Lipson and his amazing team at Mishcon de Reya .

JLM always had support from the Board of Deputies, the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and the Community Security Trust (CST) – who knew that, as the sole voice of Jewish Labour members, we were uniquely placed to take this case forward. But we still might have failed without the testimony of the whistleblowers.

More than 70 former and current members of party staff answered our call to stand up for the values that first attracted us all to Labour, some of whom put their careers on the line to do so. Their contribution made a vital difference to the EHRC taking the problem

seriously and having the necessary evidence to show how Corbyn’s Labour protected racists in order to protect his political project.

The EHRC ruled that the party had broken equalities law in terms of unlawful harassment through the acts of our agents and unlawful indirect discrimination. Put simply, Labour wasn’t a safe place for Jewish members or for those in the party who spoke out against antisemitism.

Keir Starmer’s response was as unequivocal as his apology to the Jewish community when he was elected leader: “If you’re antsemitic, you should be nowhere near this party…” The party has worked with speed and commitment to implement the report’s recommendations.

JLM is no longer ignored or blamed for weaponising racism. Instead, we’ve worked with the new general secretary, David Evans, and his

team, to design and deliver new antisemitism awareness education for MPs, the national executive committee and thousands of members.

And he’s involved the Jewish community too, setting up an Antisemitism Advisory Board, with the Board, JLC and CST all represented.

Last month, while 74 percent of delegates at Labour’s conference approved rule changes to introduce the independent EHRC-mandated complaints system, a quarter didn’t – and they are the ones we need to focus on.

The vast majority of Labour members aren’t racists – but without awareness of antisemitism and its history, it is all too easy for those with malign agendas to influence and dominate.

A year on, there can be no doubt. If you disagree with the EHRC’s report, if you reject the need for an independent system, then Labour is not for you and you’ll be shown the door.

We know there’s still much work to be done but, for many of us at JLM, we’re finally able to move on from on an incredibly dark period in the Labour Party, thanks to the EHRC’s report and Keir Starmer’s unbending commitment to root out antisemitism.

Join the dots between casual sexism and abuse NAOMI DICKSON

I

magine going to a bar and being terrified you’re going to have drugs injected into your back. Imagine having to cover your drink to make sure it doesn’t get spiked.

While drugging women in order to assault them is not a new phenomenon, it is hard not to be shocked by recent news reports about incidents up and down the country.

The fear this generates hasn’t escaped our community – at Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA), we’ve been contacted by young women who are now scared to socialise in bars and pubs.

When it comes to sexual violence, our latest figures for the six months to September 2021 lay bare the extent to which the Jewish community is no different. Of the 301 women and girls we supported during this period, 58 had experienced sexual violence. That’s one in five the proportion of women nationally who will experience this kind of abuse over their lifetime. Of the 42 young women (aged

14-30) who contacted us, we heard numerous testimonies of assault, rape and violation – usually by someone they already know.

In 18 years at Jewish Women’s Aid, I never cease to be in awe of the women and girls who find it within themselves to reach out to us, but I worry about those who feel too ashamed or embarrassed to come forward – victims who blame themselves, or are afraid of the consequences of reaching out for much-needed help.

Sexual violence wrecks lives and JWA is here to offer the support, therapy and advocacy to help women get well on the road to healing.

But it will take a community to fix the broken culture. Unfortunately, we live in a society where misogynistic attitudes can thrive, where everyday sexism is accepted and where we don’t join the dots between sexist attitudes and

abusive behaviours. The police are starting to do this in relation to attitudes in their force that enabled Wayne Couzens’ dangerous mindset and behaviour to go unchecked before he murdered Sarah Everard.

For many years, JWA has displayed our posters in synagogues and on women’s toilet doors across the Jewish community. Seeing those posters has given Jewish women the knowledge JWA is here to help and support them. Women have also told me the simple act of a synagogue displaying a JWA poster told her she was in a place where domestic abuse was recognised, and importantly, where it wasn’t tolerated, and where it was ok to seek help.

We have also offered outreach in synagogues, schools and other educational settings to challenge sexism and encourage healthy

relationships. Now it’s time to do more.

We have created a Community Toolkit, available on our website. These resources, including a video, factsheets, conversation starter cards and more, invite our community to explore what constitutes a healthy relationship, to define sexual violence, to think about the impact of gender stereotypes on relationships and consider how we prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence from happening.

We hope engagement with the toolkit will further our goal of making ours a community in which domestic abuse and sexual violence are not tolerated, and to create a culture of consent.

On 12 and 13 November, communities across the UK will mark Jewish Women’s Aid Shabbat and we call upon rabbis and community leaders to seize this opportunity to acknowledge to their communities that domestic abuse and sexual violence is happening, and to be clear this behaviour is not tolerated.

Likewise, we invite people in all settings to generate their own conversations on the Shabbat, and in this way we come together to say: ‘Not on our watch’.

Educational charity Seed led a range of activities in primary schools during the first half of the autumn term, with more than 1,600 Rosh Hashanah packs given out in six London schools. Around 1,350 parents and children attended the organisation’s Succot activities, including succah arts and crafts, while more recently, 200 parents and children tackled a Shabbat-themed escape room. Charity director Rabbi Daniel Fine said: “With Seed now coming back into schools, it’s great to see those smiles on the faces of parents and children as they learn, share Jewish experiences together and reconnect with their school in a wider sense.”

Six nurseries, two schools, three shops and care home residents all ‘went purple’ recently to show their support for Jewish Care. Participants held purple parties and held purple-themed activities to showcase their support for the ‘Go Purple’ campaign last month, which included a rendition of Purple Rain by care home residents and staff at the charity’s Anita Dorfman House at Sandringham. 3RABBINIC INAUGURATION

After an 18-month delay caused by the pandemic, Loughton Synagogue inaugurated Rabbi Yanky and Rebbetzin Rochel Abrams at an event attended by more than 120 people. Guests included senior members of the Federation, deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor Laing and councillors. The rabbinic couple joined Loughton Synagogue with their children more than two years ago from Woodford Forest Synagogue and have been instrumental in a weekly meal delivery service to residents in the community called ‘Made with Love’ Chicken Soup Run.

Journalist and author John Kampfner helped Leo Baeck College (LBC) raise almost £5,000 by delivering its annual lecture in memory of the late Rabbi Lionel Blue. With guests back in person, and a further 50 watching via Zoom from Europe and the USA, Kampfner entertained in conversation with senior LBC lecturer Dr Keith Kahn-Harris. College principal Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris said the money raised will help underpin the costs associated with the the institution’s five-year rabbinic training programme.

race yourself. The UK Jewish Film Festival (UKJFF) is marking its 25th anniversary with a movie that will shape your thinking for some time. As always, UKJFF has a plethora of productions to suit all tastes, but this particular film will goad, enrage and get you talking long after the credits roll.

Cryptically titled The Un Word (Das Unwort, ie a word that can’t be spoken), the film is the definitive conversation starter, particularly in Jewish homes as Russian-Jewish writer/ director Leo Khasin has filled it with every trope and term we despise from ‘Jews run the world’ to the Holocaust being a myth. That this rhetoric is mainly delivered by teenagers in what is essentially a comedy sounds our alarm, but Khasin was on a mission.

“I said no when I was first asked by ZDF TV to make a film about antisemitism in German schools because I didn't want to be the whining Jew telling just another anti-Jewish story,” says Khasin, who was eight when he left Moscow with his family in 1973 on an Israeli visa.

“There are so many reports and documentaries about the rise of antisemitism already, I told them I wanted to do something different.

To wake up the audience with something unfamiliar. Of course, it’s a tragic story. And I was mindful that the story I wanted to tell was true. But it’s fictionalised and I tried to bring some humour while attempting to understand the problem.”

And it is through the laughter teamed with huge discomfort that Khasin’s film lays bare the discords of modern multiculturalism and shines not just a light, but a high wattage solar panel, on the endless fight against intolerance.

Play-like and confined to a classroom and hallways, the story revolves around a serious brawl between Jewish student Max (Samuel Benito) and his Muslim classmates Karim (Oskar Redfern) and Reza (Victor Kadam).

But when the overwhelmed parents arrive at a peace-keeping summit organised by naïve form teacher Fraulein Ritter (Anna Brüggemann) who places Palestinian and Israeli flags on her gefilte fish and falafel snacks we know what lies ahead.

“Some teachers are unable to recognise antisemitism,” sighs Khasin, who has three children aged 10, 14 and 16. “I met a lot of teachers who were brave and acted decisively when students were bullied in an antisemitic way, so this film is not fair to them. But in many cases there is a lack of sensitivity, empathy and interest.”

Through extensive research and interviews,

Rising antisemitism in German schools provides the theme for a shocking comedy film. Brigit Grant talks to its director Khasin came to understand the sad reality of school life in Germany.

“They are avoiding the truth because the truth isn’t nice. In a school with 200 Arab students and only five Jewish students, it's easier to expel the Jews experiencing antisemitism than deal with the problem.

“My oldest child was at a normal public high school until 10th grade and the antisemitic experienced was subtle from German students making jokes about the Holocaust. And they would say, ‘It’s just a joke, we don’t mean anything by it.’

“She felt embarrassed, but stayed strong and they didn’t hurt her that much. But now

she is at a Jewish school where 50 percent of the kids are Jewish.”

Khasin is also reluctant to point the finger at the Middle East conflict as another conduit for hate. “It’s too easy to blame all the hatred on that; it’s a mix of everything, but I blame German society. You know, if you really stand up for a minority, if you really think and feel with the Jewish people, then this wouldn’t happen.”

Khasin supports his damning indictment of educators’ attitudes in his adopted homeland with another true story of a Jewish boy bullied at a school in Friedenau.

“The parents went to the press and there was a media outcry, but the headteacher, much like the one in my film, claimed to run a school that was against racism. He couldn’t help it if there were antisemitic attacks! Behind such an attitude, there is often a school principal who doesn’t really care about Jewish students and it’s better when they are gone.”

For all his criticism and concern, Khasin loves Berlin, its international population and his question about where a Jew should live in the world is rhetorical. “That’s the paradox,” he says, but admits he would also like to see Jewish life perceived differently in Germany.

“To not always be portrayed as victims, but rather understood as part of a culture that is allowed to remain independent. People dance around the word ‘Jew’. They don’t dare to say that because they think it’s a dirty word.

“That can only change when there is normalisation. In Germany, one always expects a culture to assimilate and become German.

That should not be. When Germans understand we are a multicultural society and not a society of guest workers or quota refugees, then things will change.”

No Lines After the death of Joan Rivers in 2014, Jewish News ran the last interview with her, so there was a buzz around the news that a series was being made about her life. But not any more!

Showtime had to pull the plug because Rivers’ life rights are owned by her daughter Melissa.

They could have gone ahead, minus such memorable lines as: “People say that money isn’t the key to happiness, but I always figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made.” The future of the limited series was also hindered by a “Jew-face” shout-out from comic Sarah Silverman when non-Jewish Kathryn Hahn (pictured) was cast as Joan.

This no doubt surprised Hahn, who has made a career out of playing Jews, most memorably as Rabbi Raquel in Amazon’s Transparent.

Len Shulman is a Holocaust survivor who is caretaker of an old mansion house in St Albans during the Seventies following its conversion into student lodgings. Len’s own youth was lost, his mother and sister killed in front of him, his world scarred by a grim past that he can’t seem to forget. But Len has a secret – under an ancient statue in his garden is a hoard of possessions taken by the Nazis during the war, which Len has been able to recover. His fervent wish is to return these items to the families of those who died.

A family trip to the United Arab Emirates allows Louisa Walters to tour, dine, sunbathe and shop amid stylish luxury

ver since the historic signing of the Abraham Accords normalisation agreement in September 2020, Dubai has become a playground for Jewish holidaymakers. The Emiratis have been keen to further strengthen relations with Israel – they have developed an agreement on medical research and development related to Covid-19, signed an Israeli player for Dubai’s Al-Nasr soccer team, sent direct flights to Tel Aviv, and allowed open visits by Israeli journalists.

There are kosher restaurants and kosher pop-ups at hotels and there is great interest in expanding tourism. Who am I to say no to an opportunity to visit?

We made up for that with truffle pizza, vitello tonnato and truly superb zucchini.

This was a whirlwind, magical few days. A special family trip of activities and entertainment interspersed with relaxing by the pool and on the beach, with lazy lunches in the sun. The heat is intense, even in October, even at night.

Rabbi Mark Goldsmith of Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue is passionate about saving the planet and wants our community to join him. This week, as part of the steering group of EcoSynagogue, he is at the Glasgow climate summit and this is why…

he COP26 Climate Change Conference this week in Glasgow is intended to be dedicated to putting into action the pledge made at the COP21 conference in Paris by more than 190 countries that they would work together to ensure global warming will be limited to two degrees, or preferably 1.5 degrees, above pre-industrial levels.

If COP26 is successful in meeting its goals, then all the countries in the world will soon sign up to achieving net zero carbon emissions by the mid-21st century, to protect communities and habitats most in danger from climate change, to invest at least $100 billion (£73bn) per year in climate protection finance, especially targeted at poorer countries and to create a partnership between all governments, businesses and civil society organisations to make it happen.

If the action needed to save the world from the worst effects of climate change is so huge, what were six members of my synagogue,

Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue, doing last Thursday sitting round a table and online discussing how we could change the light fittings in our 2010-built main synagogue to low energy bulbs? What is the point when the UK as a whole only contributes around 1.5 percent to global carbon emissions against the nearly 30 percent contributed by Russia and China, which are barely going to be represented at COP26?

These six are the members of the synagogue’s Environmental Action Group and, as one of us pointed out, carbon emissions are not local. When you buy products from China, you enable carbon to be emitted in the manufacture. How would it be if we were as concerned about the environmental standards of the producers we buy from as we rightly expect our retailers to make sure products have not been made by child labour?

Every decision we make can drive change, however small.

a remarkable record over centuries in being able to punch above their weight in driving change. Jews were major activists in the civil rights movement in America, Jews help push change to improve the rights of exploited workers in our own trade union movement, Jews fought fascism, Jews are well represented in all areas of business, scientific, artistic and cultural innovation.

The roll call of Jewish Nobel prize-winners is testament to this. Twenty percent of all of them come from a people that is less than 0.2 percent of humanity.

Our Jewish community can also be at the forefront of organisational and individual efforts to be exemplary environmental citizens.

EcoSynagogue, the organisation in the UK that works with all synagogues willing to sign up to help them to do so, will be exhibiting at COP26, bringing a Jewish voice to the conference together with the Board of Deputies.

three weeks ago with a multi-denominational event, at which one of the keynote speakers was Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirivis, called Carbon-Zero, if not now when?, echoing Hillel’s call for Jews never to hesitate to take the right and just action. Israel, too, aims to build herself in this century as an innovator for environmental technology that we can use in our homes and workplaces, as we heard last week at an EcoSynagogue seminar with the minister for environmental protection, Tamar Zandberg.

David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, wrote: “The Bible bequeathed to our people, and through it to all humanity, sublime humane values; the value of human brotherhood, the values of justice and righteousness, truth and kindness, the equality of nations and peace that are the essence of prophetic teaching and the morality of Judaism.”

Jews should be pioneering these values through our community’s and personal response to the climate emergency of today.

Genius Jake says: There is an extremely important event taking place in Glasgow at the moment to help countries deal with climate change, which means changes in our usual weather due to human activity. This is causing temperatures to rise higher and faster than ever before. The United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is the biggest meeting of world leaders that has ever happened in the UK. More than 200 leaders, including prime minister Boris Johnson, are discussing how we can all help make the world greener. Global warming is damaging our environment. It can cause heatwaves, floods, forest fires and sea levels to rise, harming human and animal habitats. Extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is absorbed by the oceans, making them more acidic, which is dangerous for sea animals.

Jacob Dalah, age 8, from Mill Hill says: I would love to attend COP26 and help tackle climate change as I know how important it is for our world. I would advise them to encourage households to use less electricity and less water at home and to walk, scoot or cycle where possible. I would also suggest they encourage households to grow their own vegetables and instruct councils to plant trees and help families install solar panels in their homes.

Children who are deaf or hard of hearing can watch their favourite Disney shows via a new app created by a Rugby School student.

During lockdown, 17 year-old Mariella Satow, who has dual UK-US citizenship, created SignUp – which enables you to stream a film on TV and have a small pop-up window with an interpreter signing. The app is available in the US on Disney Plus films, but Mariella hopes to make a British Sign Language version of it for other streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Sunday, 21 November marks Mitzvah Day!

People will spend the day doing “good deeds”, aka mitzvahs and acts of kindness to help those in need. To mark the day, there’s a brilliant book you can read, which PJ Library has picked as one of its books of the month. Mitzvah Pizza by Sarah Lynn Scheerger is based on a true story about a pizzeria and a girl called Missy.

Missy’s favourite day is “Daddy Day” and, on one such day, she gets to spend her pocket money. Missy and her dad stop for a slice at a pizzeria to discuss how to spend it. Missy meets Jane, who is also getting a slice of pizza with her dad, but they pay with sticky notes taken from the pizzeria’s wall. Jane says it’s the same as money, but Missy is not so sure.

Her dad explains that people can use the notes to buy pizza if they don’t have enough money. Those buying pizza can also donate to the Piece O’ Pizza Fund and put a sticky note on the wall to help feed everyone. So, if people don’t have enough money to buy a slice, they can take a post-it note and use that instead! Missy decides that’s exactly how she wants to spend her pocket money: on sticky notes for pizza!

This Chanukah, Tribe and Jewish News are challenging young members of the community to create a showstopping model Chanukiah that is not only kosher, but also kind to the Earth!

To enter the competition, you need to build a model Chanukiah out of suitable repurposed or recyclable materials – for example,

The Chanukiah also needs to fulfil all of the requirements to make it “kosher” and suitable for the festival of Chanukah.

This means that it needs space for eight candles, which are in a straight line and all the same height, plus an extra candle – the “shamash” – which stands out from the rest.

It is important that you do not try to light the model Chanukiah if it is not safe to do so, and a responsible adult should be consulted first.

Once you have built your Chanukiah, please take a photo of it and email it to competition@tribeuk.com. The closing date is Friday, 19th November at 12pm.

The competition is open to all primary and secondary school-aged children, and two winners, who will be

Torah For Today What the Torah says about: COP 26

BY TAMARA JACOBSON In this week’s sedra we learn how Jacob, with his mother Rebecca’s help and encouragement, disguises himself as his elder brother, the hunter Esau, before successfully gaining the firstborn’s blessings from their poor-sighted father, Isaac. As a result, the furious Esau vows to kill his brother and so Jacob’s parents instruct him to flee to his uncle Laban, in faraway Padan Aram, where he remains for 20 years.

At first glance, this seems to make sense. Jacob steals the blessing, angers his brother so much that his life is in danger and then runs away. However, the Torah also tells us: “And Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Padan Aram.” If Esau knew where Jacob was hiding, why did he not pursue his brother and enact his revenge?

Our Sedra teaches that Esau had married two Canaanite women, much to his parents’ displeasure. We also know that earlier, he had sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup. But what happens next perhaps shows a side to Esau

many of us have not considered and it begins to answer our question. Esau hears Isaac send Jacob to Padam Aram to find a wife.

Suddenly, Esau begins to understand the pain he may have caused his parents and the damage it has caused. With this new awareness, he does not seek revenge but goes to his uncle Ishmael and marries his daughter, a grandchild of Abraham, rather than another Canaanite woman. Like Jacob, Esau finds a wife from within his family.

We picture Esau as a fierce, angry hunter, but in the aftermath of the deception, we begin to see him as a remorseful son who shows respect for his father, whom he loves.

Nobody is either wholly good or wholly bad. We all have the ability to learn from past errors, which Esau does and shows true kibbud av v’em – honouring our parents.

Many years ago, a group of brave – perhaps brazen – leaders, emboldened by a charismatic and potentially dangerous leader, met.

They feared they were facing another global catastrophe – a flood, perhaps, similar to the one that destroyed their ancestors. After all, their astronomical and astrological calculations suggested such an event was indeed on the cards.

Thus the builders of the Tower of Babel gathered with their plan to save themselves. “Come, let us build a city and a tower, with its head in heaven, let us make a name for ourselves lest we be scattered across the face of the earth.”

We know what became of their plans. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks pointed out that this short, enigmatic passage is full of cutting

irony, their best-laid plans lain to waste: God “descended from heaven”, instead of them reaching heaven; their unity was met with dispersion, their common tongue with confusion.

What makes this story particularly compelling is that, despite seemingly positive intentions and common cause, festering under the surface were ulterior motives: power plays, hubris and a desire to break free of God. The world leaders at COP26 perhaps stand at a similar juncture

to those gathering before the Tower of Babel.

A sense of impending catastrophe, a chance – perhaps – to make a difference. Gatherings of this scale can be immensely powerful: They are an opportunity to bring together the very best wisdom and resources humanity has to offer; the holiness in such occasions is reflected in blessings upon seeing a monarch (potentially a president!) and, if it ever arises, 600,000 Jews together (perhaps some of the mass funerals of leadings rabbis in Israel in recent years come close).

But this is on condition that the gatherings are “for the sake of heaven” (Pirkei Avot): not for having our heads in heaven, or for making a name, but for the good of all dwellers on earth. ◆ Rabbi Garry Wayland is a teacher and educator for US Living and Learning

Calling it assisted dying is all wrong

BY RABBI DR RENÉ PFERTZEL Jethro responded to Moses: “It is not a good thing you are doing. You will wither away, both you and the people, as the matter is too arduous for you alone.” (Exodus 18) All too often, we feel overwhelmed by the tasks of the community. But the Torah – in Jethro’s advice to his son-in-law Moses – contains a very simple but effective rule for us to follow… share!

The story of their conversation makes us examine what makes a community successful. First, there are the people. A community is a group of people who come together for a purpose, who agree to interweave parts of their lives for something larger than their individuality.

Second comes the leadership.

Moses’ first model of controlling everything led to his burnout.

One person cannot hold everything, and the lesson taught by Jethro is collaboration.

Hierarchical institutions function

as long as their leader is strong. Once the leader fades away, the whole system collapses. More and more institutions, businesses and communities are adopting a collaborative model, whereby people bring their skills and make them available to all.

Finally, the message, or the core values of a community. It is not enough to be together, to enjoy our own company, if there is no underlying goal. A group of people without a purpose will eventually wither.

We are part of a larger family that doesn’t shy away from questioning our tradition. In essence, Judaism is progressive and evolutive.

Liberal Jews are explorers.

We tend to push the boundaries, to reflect on the changes in the society and to adapt. We welcome anyone with good intent who wants to join us. We work together to create a meaningful Jewish life. ◆ Rabbi Dr René Pfertzel serves Kingston Liberal Synagogue

BY RABBI DEBBIE YOUNG-SOMERS On 22 October, the Lords debated the Assisted Dying Bill at its second reading. A few days later, I spoke to a congregant who had been desperate to help his beloved wife die with dignity but, instead, had watched her suffer terribly through an illness with an inevitable end.

When my own dad was dying, our family could not agree on whether he should be left untreated if he contracted pneumonia in order to shorten his suffering.

And with a sibling who is disabled, I am acutely aware of the load such legislation could place on them should they feel they are becoming too much of a burden.

As clergy, these difficult debates are encountered in our day-to-day work, and each case is heartbreaking.

No one wants to lose their loved ones, but many feel they want the option to honour a loved one’s desire to die with dignity rather than suffer horribly to the end. In the Lords’ debate,

those on both sides of the argument shared their own personal stories.

Each one is powerful and compelling.

We have also been having these conversations at the Reform Rabbinic Assembly, and it is perhaps unsurprising that, like the wider populace, we are not of one mind on this. Some of our members feel passionately that they must support the campaign for assisted dying; others feel just as strongly that it must be opposed.

Jewish law is pretty clear on the importance of preserving human life – pikuach nefesh – a principle that trumps almost all other laws.

However, Halachah also allows us to not artificially prolong life and

to allow death to take its course – something to which in modern medicine is not always adhered.

As Reform Jews, we also value the ability of the individual to make their own decisions, after learning and engaging deeply with the issue.

This meant we couldn’t produce a nice, neat answer to this complex debate. But we were very clear as a rabbinic body on one thing: wherever people are on this journey, we want to be there to support them and their loved ones pastorally.

As a rabbi, it is a daily task to bring comfort and meaning – and that will mean very different things to people grappling with degenerative illnesses, disability and end-of-life care. These are not just facts to be debated, but real lives in emotional and physical pain.
